2024.05.15 20:45 Nicwearsgucci 5.8 to 5.6
Never thought I’d see the day, in just 3 months I reversed it!
But my goal is 5.2.
Here’s some info about me, I’m about 5’11-6’ weighting at 157-162ish. So pretty skinny guy.
Being pre diabetic changed my life, if I didn’t randomly take that test to check if I’m okay, I would’ve been consuming RED 40s, processed foods, drinking every weekend, etc.
Here’s what I did:
First I threw away all my snacks and processed foods. I budgeted for healthy and WHOLE foods. If I craved sweets I tried my hardest to forget about it.
Learned to always look at each foods ingredients. For example: peanut butter should only have ONE INGREDIENT. Not 5+ smh. Unless the food is meant to have multiple ingredients, but you wanna make sure that each Ingredient is whole. Use Yuka app as reference.
I learned that if you aren’t craving protein, you shouldn’t be eating the bad foods.
I ate balanced meals such as chicken breast, party wings, lean steak but cutting off the visible outer fat to reduce the trans fats or whatever it is lol. Ground meat. EGGS EVERY MORNING. I at least do 4-5 eggs. I changed my oil from canola to olive oil and avocado oil.
I changed my Teflon pans to stainless steel baby!!! For some reason the food just tastes better on stainless steel. So invest the money, Costco has the best deals.
Vegetables are important af. I’d either get romaine lettuce, spinach’s, asparagus, or the mix spring vegetables. These are the foods that will balance your meals. Trust.
I incorporate fruits like, all types of berries, pears, apples. I avoided bananas since it raises sugars but idk I don’t have a CGM to try it out.
I incorporate fats sometimes just cuz healthy fats are expensive to come by but luckily I grow my own avocados lol. I’d add avocados and healthy peanut butter.
I incorporate whole grain bread, eliminate the white bread trash please. Get on that whole grain Dave’s killer. Apparently it raises blood sugar but I’ve been eating it and I did fine I suppose.
I incorporated a healthy water intake. I would drink powdered made electrolytes until I discovered this better alternative. - Sparking spring water. I use S.Pellegrino, got it at Costco and what I do is I cut a lemon or lime in half and use the half lemon to squeeze on a tall cup, I add a pinch of the pink sea salt, add ice and the sparkling water and omfg, healthy electrolyte with no additives and it taste fricken good. Don’t over do it cuz it can be addictive . I drink it at least 1-2 times a day and a bit of regular water. But don’t over hydrate yourself. If you don’t have a tint in the restroom you’re over hydrating. Google a color pee chart lol.
This is great for soda lovers
I incorporated a cold press juicer but damn it can be time consuming and expensive in terms of ingredients. But make sure it’s majority vegetables. Add like one or two fruits like apples or oranges to add the sweetness.
Bought the ninja ice cream maker. Make sure you add whole ingredients not any of that processed stuff to help make a good icecream. You want it to be a bit sweet? Use monk fruit. It’s better than sugar but more expensive. You wanna bake your favorite sweets? That’s fine I’d find ingredients that doesn’t raise blood sugars. Make sure the ingredients are whole. ALWAYS.
Before I eat the healthy snacks I always have to incorporate veggies now. 3 months ago I would’ve never thought lol.
Incorporate exercise. I have dumbbells at home so I occasionally do squats and other forms of lifting . I do pushups as well. Gyms are boring to me so I found this group to play my favorite sport. Which is soccer, I play 2 hours straight maxing out 10,000 steps+. If you hate the gym find a sport, 10x better imo.
It’s hard for me to max out 10k steps but I do at least 2k.
Now you will see results in a month, my face got slim, your mental health improves, you feel grateful for the smallest things. Processed foods will make your stomach upset. I was so used to processed foods that I didn’t realize how bad it was making me feel.
I promised myself that if I reverse it I’ll go back to the junk. But hell nah lol this change is for life lol. I love it.
And yes I did relapse, I got drunk once in the 3 months and drank responsible one day and ate some processed foods. But each time I did I would feel sick.
There will be cynical people telling you it’s okay to eat processed foods once in a while, and ridicule your new diet. Don’t let that get to you. It’s your body not theirs.
You’re not perfect so you’ll break rules here and there.
I’ll update if I have more to share. If I can do it you can to.

2024.05.14 21:28 Ultravis66 Tips and Tricks on how to stay motivated and be successful on your Keto journey:
Recently I have been seeing a lot of posts about getting stuck at X weight, or “I cheated and now I am out of Ketosis.” So I wanted to share my journey with you and what has helped me go from where I was, 343 lbs at my heaviest, down to 280lbs as of this week the last time I weighed myself. Today I am lighter than I have been in over 15 years! I still have a long way to go, and my end goal is 200 lbs, because I want to be thin and attractive and I want people to respect me and not judge me because I am fat, just like you probably reading this right now. Well, I am here to try and help!
My journey started with an initial health scare from when I visited the doctor back in 2019, as you are all probably aware of, pre-diabetic, stage 3 fatty liver, ect… I had known about Keto diets in the past, when I was younger, the low carb diet at the time was Atkins, and I had used this diet before to keep my weight in check as I have always struggled with my weight, but that was back in my early 20s. My solution to fixing my health problems (and weight problem) was to go back on a ketogenic diet.
In 2019, I went through the struggle of getting my body in ketosis, dealt with keto flu, low energy, and was able to overcome those challenges and get on a good track of staying low carb. I managed to do this for about a year before I started to slip. It started with small slip ups here and there “a few Doritos wont hurt, its just a hand full.” “A small piece of cookie wont hurt.” Before I knew it (mid 2022), I was kicked out of Ketosis and craving high carb foods again and back into old eating habits. I went from 343 down to 283 then back up to 312 lbs, Darn! I was losing the battle...
Then in 2023, I started having health issues again, which I won’t go into details, and I wanted to get my health in check for good. What was needed, in my opinion, was a fundamental shift in the way I (we) view food. We need to look at food as an essential building block and an energy source for our body and get out of the mindset of looking at food for comfort and enjoyment. This is not an easy thing to do and is probably the hardest thing I have ever done next to getting an Engineering Degree, but if you can master this one thing, you will be hugely successful in your journey to losing the weight and being healthy.
Step 1: Small steps and Logging
My first piece of advice is start small. Yes, you are impatient and yes you want to be thin RIGHT NOW! I get it, but this won’t happen overnight. This is a long process that takes a long time. You are fighting an uphill battle. You are probably surrounded by people eating all kinds of high carb foods, you probably got that skinny friend/relative that can eat anything and stay thin (NOT FAIR! I totally get it..). The first thing I recommend is track absolutely everything you eat. Lose it is only $3 bucks/month (best money I ever spent). Do not try and diet yet, just track what you are eating. Eat a cookie? Log it! Eat an entire party bag potato chips? Hey don’t sweat it! But LOG IT! Get into the habit of logging absolutely everything you put into your body no matter what it is, and don’t judge yourself for your bad eating habits, don’t worry you and me, we are going to fix this together!
After about a week (maybe 2 weeks), make a small change… I was eating about 250 net grams of carbs per day, so I set a reasonable goal for the next week… Lets see if I can get that down to 150 net/day for a week. One week goes by, easily beat it! All it took was cutting some bread out of my diet as well as rice and potatoes. Next step, 100 net/day. Weeks goes by I was at 120 net/day. Darn! I tried my best, but next week, I’m going to do it! Next week goes by I was at 99 net/day. Yes! I did it I hit my goal. Let’s see if I can do it again and again. 2 more weeks go by, and I was down to 80 net/day without hardly trying. Then I lowered my goal to 50/day and that is when it started to get hard. Now I had to cut that slice of toast out of my diet with my morning eggs. I had to cut that bowl of rice out with my meat. I had to really start making some hard changes, and I wasn’t always successful during the first month. I went over and hit 60/day, but I kept at it, kept logging. Today I average 21 Net/day carbs (not too bad right). The best part about the second time I got myself into Ketosis, there was ZERO side effects. No keto flu. I did have electrolyte imbalances for a while but was easily fixed with upping potassium and adding more salt to my food.
The key here is set reasonable goals for yourself that you know you can beat, you wont always be successful, but keep at it. Breaking bad habits is hard, but if you keep logging, and you keep at your goals, eventually you will break it!
Step 2: Eat only nutrient dense foods
This goes back to looking at food as building blocks and energy for your body, make sure every food you eat is to fulfil a specific nutrient requirement. You need more potassium, eat more kale/spinach, need to get your vitamin D up, eat some smoked salmon. Over time, your taste buds will change, and you will start really enjoying the foods you are eating. I absolutely LOVE kale now!
Also, this includes keto-friendly foods like bacon. I do not eat bacon. There is almost no nutritional value in eating it, so why eat it? Eat some steak instead.
If I eat a food with Carbs, it will be a very nutrient dense food and because my body needs those nutrients. What kind of foods am I talking about? Here are some examples:
73% + or more cocoa chocolate
Berries (strawberries for example)
Lemons/limes
Nuts and seeds of all kinds.
All kinds of vegetables like broccoli, spinach, kale, Peppers, Onions
The Key to staying in ketosis when you are consuming foods with carbs is moderation. Yes that 70% chocolate has sugar in it, but I eat one square MAX per day. That one piece of chocolate has 4.7 grams of net carbs and 2 grams of fiber. There is plenty of room in my daily carb limit to allow for it. As long as my weekly average total carb intake stays under 25 grams/day, I am good (my personal set goal).
Step 3: NO CHEAT DAYS!!!
Once you are in the groove, and you got your carb intake to your set goals, be EXTREMELY strict with food intake. Allow for ZERO cheat days and have a ZERO tolerance policy on any "empty carb" food. What do I mean by empty carb? any food that is high in carbs and has no nutritional value, like cookies, chips, ice-cream ect... Cheating will get you kicked out of ketosis and is the path back to bad eating habits and putting the weight back on and that is exactly what happened to me! Just don’t do it. We are not eating for comfort anymore; we are eating because our bodies need this specific nutrient. This is the goal.
Step 4: Fasting
You don’t need to do this right away, make sure you get yourself into the habit of logging, and eating foods that are nutrient dense and make sure your body is in ketosis first. Like with before, don’t try and jump headfirst into fasting, take small steps and build on it every week. Start with a shorter duration fast once per week, for 12 hours, then increase slowly until you hit 18 hours. The end goal here is twice per week for a minimum of 18 hours. If you get hungry and you cant do it, don’t beat yourself up over it, its hard! Your body will fight you and want you to eat. Try again the next week with your set goals. Just make sure you are eating those nutrient dense foods we talked about above. As your body becomes more and more fat adapted, this will get easier and easier.
I am currently fasting for 24 hours on Mondays and Tuesdays. Monday morning I eat 2 fried eggs and drink my coffee with half and half then fast until Tuesday morning. Then on Tuesday morning, I will eat 2 fried eggs and that same coffee without eating until Wednesday morning. It is currently Tuesday and I have not eaten since this morning. I won’t eat until tomorrow morning.
To prep your body for long fasts that will allow your body to eat itself with ease is making sure you are LOADED with TONS of nutrients, (remember step 2?). Saturday and Sunday are prep days for that fast. I eat dark leafy greens, like Kale, and Spinach, cheesy broccoli I make myself, peppers, ect... I eat lots of nuts and seeds, Walnuts, pecans, brazil nuts, peanut butter, steak, Smoked raw salmon. I will eat a little bit more than my metabolic rate, about 200 calories more (2500 cal). I also generously salt everything so that I am around 4000 MG for the day. This will load your body with potassium, magnesium, and sodium. Then I go into my fast on Monday. Perfect for me since I need to be at work on Monday and Tuesday.
If you do this, when you go into your fast, you will have plenty of nutrients/electrolytes for your body to just eat your own fat off your body. You probably wont even feel hungry for many hours on end, but if you do get hungry, drink lemon in water, or apple cider vinegar to suppress your hunger.
Now, the key to coming out of your fast is to NOT over-eat. Eat VERY SLOWLY (I cannot emphasize this enough). Take bites, chew, put your fork down, wait 10-30 seconds after you swallow, then take another bite. Eat high fat foods like cheese, eggs, peanut butter. This will help you feel satiated. Try and keep your first meal out of a fast at around 1000 calories.
Step 5: Exercise
Try and add exercise into your weekly routine and this will help you lose the weight even faster, but is not necessary to lose the weight. Exercise is really good for you anyway. For me personally, I picked up swimming (I swim 2 miles 3x per week now), and I feel great afterwards, all those endorphins! So why not?
Step 6: For life!
What do I mean for life? What I mean is that you need to view keto as a for life plan. The key to staying healthy is eating healthy. So why ever go back to your old way of eating? On this diet, I feel great, my libido is way up and I have tons of energy to do things! I want to go outside and work on my car! I want to go to the gym. When you are eating healthy, you will feel amazing, you will have moments of euphoria, you will be happy, you will have an amazing sex life! That guy/girl you like at the gym will notice you. You will no longer be ignored! You will also be smarter, your mental clarity will be better than ever, you will be able to focus on your goals!
Final piece of advice: You will fail… yes you will fail at your goals over and over again, I still fail my goals once in a while. Last week I had a day where I went up to 30 net/day carbs and ate 2600 calories (DARN!), but I didn’t give up! I wont give up! Sometimes you will slip, but as long as you set reasonable goals for yourself and tighten those goals solely over time, and you keep at it, you will be successful in the long run, and you will get the weight off! Don’t focus on the scale, but focus on getting into healthy eating habits, focus on exercising and I promise you, the weight will come off!

2024.05.13 03:52 mbz321 Ok, so wtf does this reward actually apply to?
25% off a bowl. I tried the regular version, I tried the homewrecker version, I tried adding and deleting various proteins and nada! I feel like these random rewards never work properly.

2024.05.12 12:25 kennbr $1 Per Cup Homemade Chili Recipe?
I have been trying to come up with a chili recipe that will be better, and cheaper than store-bought chili. I really don't know the first thing about chili, and have been flying by the seam of my pants. The first batch I made was utterly horrible... I don't wanna talk about it. But I have hit upon sort of a rough-recipe that I've found to be pretty good, but I'm sure that some chili aficionados can help me make it better, and hopefully cheaper. This is what I've been doing so far...
Ingredients:
- 2 Cans of Kidney Beans
- 4 Lbs of Beef Franks, Sliced into Medallions
- 2 Lbs of Lean Beef (stew meat, skirt steak, whatever's cheapest), Diced
- 1/8th Cup Cayenne Pepper
- 1/8th Cup Paprika
- Mustard Seed (Add until it tastes right)
- One Whole Garlic Clove
- 2 16 oz Cans of Tomato Sauce
- 1 28 oz Can of Crushed Tomatoes
Procedure:
- Dice lean beef into 1/2" cubes
- Lightly season with Johnny's
- Cook in a sauce pan until lightly seared, remove from heat and drain grease
- Slice beef franks into medallions, and lightly fry until they're slightly browned, remove from heat and drain grease
- Drain and rinse two cans of kidney beans, and throw into 5 qt pot
- Add beef chunks and medallions on top of kidney beans and mix
- Pour in tomato sauce, and crushed tomatoes, and mix
- Add water and stir until entire mixture reaches top of the 5 quart pot
- Bring to boil, reduce heat, and let boil for 45 minutes
- Add cayenne, paprika, and minced garlic and reduce heat to simmer for 8 hours
- Periodically stir and add mustard seed throughout
I like the results, but I have no doubt it could be better. I like the spice level, but I think I'm missing something that could give it a little bit more "tanginess". I like to add sour cream and eat it with tortilla chips. I read to let the beans cook before adding the seasoning because they will kind of "absorb" the flavor, so that's why I cook them for 45 minutes before adding the seasoning. I like to slightly sear the beef first, because otherwise I find that cooking it for so long kind of leaves it a shredded mess instead of chunks. I screwed up and left too much grease in the mix a couple times, so I have gotten more careful about that. I would really like to find some peppers that might add some tanginess, but I'm pretty satisfied with the spiciness. Maybe something like some lemon/lime juice could be the ticket? I'm trying to avoid adding too much salt.
Most importantly, is the economics. Right now, the ingredients for all of this cost me about $30, and so for 20 cups, I'm getting about the equivalent of 10 cans of chili. $3 a can is not bad, especially considering most of the store-bought stuff I can get isn't much cheaper than that, and I am happy to get away from the processed stuff and preservatives. However, I'm not really at a point with the recipe that I'd say mine tastes better. It's palatable, and I enjoy it, but I would like it to be a bit tastier, and if I could get it to be AS cheap as store-bought that would be great. Right now the main ingredient that's preventing that is the beef; even buying the cheapest cuts or stew meat, it's just very expensive. I could cut out a ton of cost by just using beef franks instead, but while I find those flavorful I feel like if my goal is to try to get away from preservatives and processed foods, having those in tremendous quantities doesn't really help.
One thing I really like about this so far is it's pretty simple. There's not a whole lot of different ingredients, or a lot of prep time, and I'd like to keep it that way. I'm wondering if I could possible switch out beef for pork to improve the economics? I initially tried chicken, but I didn't like that at all, however that was before I had tweaked other parts of the recipe.
My ultimate goal would be a recipe that would get me close to a $1 per cup recipe that's low on preservatives and processed food, but that tastes as good or better than the store-bought stuff.

2024.05.10 21:01 Orsoyouthink Not all GF food is bland!
| I've seen a few "I'll never eat good food again!"/"Gluten free tastes so bland!" posts, figured I'd throw my collection of very not-bland food out there :) I tagged it no recipe, but if anyone has interest I can probably dig the recipes up. Mostly I just scour the internet and alter recipes to my diet. (Hopefully this is the right order, I don't post much) - Duck breast poutine
- Boeuf Bourguignon on potato puree
- Carbonara with homemade noodles, guanciale and pancetta
- Steak with baked potato slices, garlic mushrooms, air fryer brussel sprouts with bacon, and chimichurri sauce
- Ramen :)
- Nashville hot chicken sandwich
- Tostadas
- Lamb Ragu (my favourite)
- Homemade crunchwrap!
- Homemade fettucine with vodka sauce
- Tuna tartare on avocado with side salad, miso-honey dressing, crispy shallots and chili-seasoned pistachios
- Mapo Tofu
- Oysters with a Shrimp/Scallop/Mango/Avocado/Lime/Tequila Ceviche
- Pizza with 'nduja, pepperoni and buffalo mozzarella
- Lemon risotto with peas and crispy proscuitto
- Handmade ravioli stuffed with sausage, ricotta, parmigiano reggiano and spinach
- Lemon Butter Scallop Linguine

2024.05.09 15:38 distendingopinion Parent seeking advice
18 y/o child has had this problem for at least ten years. Had adenoids and tonsils removed. Noticed a difference after tonsil removal but overall the problem persists. Everyone has bad breath in the morning so I won’t read too much into that; for them it’s late in the day - after they’ve been out all day it’s bad, which, I know, is also somewhat normal but the tongue is white/gray coated and generally doesn’t look healthy. Has tested negative for h. pylori, candiadisis. S/o has commented that they think it smells like someone undergoing ketosis which is interesting as kid not only has very high metabolism (known for getting “hangry”) but also has unusual food predilections: likes very brine-y tastes like pickles, vinegar as well as bitter tastes like limes and salty stuff like soy sauce. Also is obsessed with steak. You might sense where my head is - is there something metabolic? Maybe it’s just diet? Great kid, has done well and will do well in life. Awesome friends who don’t give a sh*t. But you know how it is, you just want the best for them, especially as they head out into the real world. Thoughts welcome!

2024.05.09 01:27 False-Shower-6238 7 night stay in May 2024
Just got back today from Disney World / Caribbean Beach Resort. Me and my kiddo (13)
Martinique - preferred room, first floor, corner room (2 windows) near main area with quick service, restaurant, shop and pool. Close to Riviera sky-liner station. Highly recommend this location.
Hotel highlights - pretty grounds, was outside a lot, felt like a tropical location - Great pool with fun slide - Skyliner to Epcot and Hollywood studios. Love the skyliner! - Good restaurant, quick service and pool bar
Hotel cons - longish bus ride to magic kingdom - Rooms okay; nothing special. Would probably feel cramped for more than 2 people - Large spread out property (so request a room near what you expect to use a lot)
DW Food highlights - Sebastian’s bistro taste of the Caribbean esp the rolls and the steak - Les Halles Macaron Lime Raspberry and Jambon Beurre - Tony’s Town Square garlic bread with fondue - Centertown Market pulled pork sandwich - Skipper Canteen cheese balls and steak - La Hacienda de San Angel avocado margarita and queso/chips - Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe chocolate chip cookie
Favorite Rides (we got the Lightening lanes for all 6 park days, no individual LL) - haunted mansion - Pirates of the Caribbean - A small world - Big thunder mountain - Soarin - Remy’s - Test track - A bugs life - Safari - Kali river rapids - Dinosaur - Runaway railroad - Smugglers Run
I have mixed feelings about Lighting Lanes. Last time I went to DW there were free fast passes so having to pay and only get one at a time were negatives. Also, often LL were not available at all the entire day so that was frustrating. But when I managed to get ones I wanted, there was minimal waiting in line which is great. I didnt feel like I was on my phone all the time to get a LL. It was very easy to use. Can’t believe that Mine train requires an individual LL!
Was at Hollywood Studios on May the fourth. Lots of people dressed up. It was fun. Didn’t see any special characters.
It was crowded!! Cheer groups and just people in general. And it was hot! Definitely came back with a tan :) —— Previously stayed at CBR (2015), Beach Club (2016) Wilderness lodge (2017 & 2019). Enjoyed all properties.
Forgot to add at first: did not enjoy Disney springs at all. Too crowded and mainly stores I have locally. I was with my kiddo so it’s probably better for an adult trip. Long line for Gideons which seems so insane to me.
I wore New balance fresh foam sneakers and they were great.

Farm Boy - Atlantic Snow Crab - $7.99 per lb -- Fun seafood option. Definitely a treat, but might make for a nice dinner!
- Bacon (Leadbetter) - $3.99 375g pack -- Not the cheapest option in bacon, but it's a step up from value-brand bacon.
- Vidalia onions - $1.88 per lb -- Ouufff, that hurts my feelings. Vidalias are my favourite onion, but at nearly $2/lb when regular ones shouldn't go over 80c/lb, it's a tough one to swallow...
- Cucumber - $0.99 each -- Great price for a cucumber, but watch out for other deals.
- Deli - Black Forest Ham (Brandt) - $1.99 per 100g -- Good deal on good ham!
- Deli - Chicken breast roast (Maple Lodge) - $2.49 per 100g -- Good deal on nice deli.
- Produce Price Rating: High
Farmers Pick (can be a little late on their flyer) (
https://www.farmerspick.ca/flyer-specials)
Food Basics - Chicken breast (boneless skinless, Maple Lodge) - $4.98 per lb -- Good price for chicken breast!
- Bacon (Leadbetter) - $3.88 375g pack -- Like the Leadbetter's at Farmboy, it's step-up bacon, and it's a good sale price.
- Atlantic salmon - $10.88 per lb -- Fair price for salmon.
- Carrots - $1.25 2lb bag -- Awesome!
- Onions - $1.25 2lb bag -- Awesome!
- Broccoli - $1.25 per crown -- Great price!
- Mini cucumbers - $1.99 6-pack -- Nice! Good price!
- Apples (various) - $2.98 3lb bag -- Fair price for apples, but mind the type you buy. Some varieties bruise up easily and you could easily lose a few soldiers if not careful.
- Lemons - $2.98 2lb bag -- Fair price for lemons.
- Oranges - $1.88 3lb bag -- Great price for oranges!! That's 60c/lb!!
- Blueberries - $1.88 half pint -- Good price for blueberries. About 1.50-175 for a half-pint is good.
- Mango - $0.67 each -- Wow! Haven't seen a 67c mango in months!
- Cantaloupe - $2.98 each -- Good ol' $3 melon.
- Mini watermelon - $3.98 each -- Great price for a small watermelon!
- Corned beef (Hereford) - $2.98 340g can -- Not the most exciting ingredient, but it's good to have one or two cans in the pantry.
- SPAM - $2.98 340g can -- Same as the corned beef.
- Smoked ham (Selection) - $8.00 675g toupie -- That works out to just about 1.18/100g, which is a good rate on ham for sandwiches, or frying up for a meal.
- Tofu (Fountaine santé) - $5.00 For 2x 400g packs -- Good price for tofu. $2.50 for 400g is "nice average". If you're paying $2, it's a good deal. $3+ and you're either outside of town, or you're paying for a special brand or dessert tofu.
- Silk plant bev - $2.88 1.74-1.89L -- Excellent deal on the Silk stuff. This is commonly $4-5 per jug, Under $3 is a good deal.
- Produce Price Rating: Low to medium low
FoodLand - Pork chops (loin cut) - $2.99 per lb -- Fair price for decent cuts of pork. Given these are boneless, you're a meat gavel away from schnitzel.
- Chicken breast (boneless skinless) - $5.88 per lb -- Fair price for chicken breast. Lower is definitely possible, where $4.50/lb is the a "best target".
- Beef cross-rib roast (AAA) - $7.99 per lb -- Fair price for beef, but not my price-point. I prefer to see at least $6/lb before I start entertain these cuts and products. Though, I'm maybe a poor judge as I'm not really a fancy steak kinda guy. But, that's also how I save tons of cash. As the saying goes, the customer is always right in matters of taste!
- Atlantic salmon - $10.99 per lb -- Fair price for salmon.
- Brick cheese (Compliments) - $5.49 400g bar -- Not the best price for cheap brick cheese, but it's ok. It's at least 50c my standard go-to rate. But Foodland isn't an "in-town" brand, so the price scales higher as you move out of dense city areas.
- Luncheon meat (Holiday) - $1.99 340g can -- I think this is similar to SPAM, but I've never had it personally.
- Produce Price Rating: Medium-high to high.
Freshco (price matcher)
- Chicken breast (boneless skinless) - $10.00 4-pack -- Marge Simpson grunts, these products are deceiving. Throw these on the scale and make sure they're at least 2lb.
- Smoked sausages (Compliments) - $7.99 900g pack -- These come in a couple of different flavours, including "bacon cheddar". Works out to $4/lb, which ain't bad. I think these are pre-cooked as well. You can score good raw sausage for about the same price or just a bit more, but it'll be much tougher to find.
- Sweet peppers - $3.99 4-pack -- Fair price. Not the best, but not the worst either.
- Hothouse tomatoes - $0.99 per lb -- Excellent price for tomatoes!
- Corn - $2.00 for 5 ears -- Excellent! 40c an ear!!!
- Celery - $2.99 per head -- Ok price for celery. Lots of places charge $4 for nice big heads of celery...
- Bok choy, Napa, Flat Cabbage - $0.99 per lb -- Amazing price for choy and napa, fair for cabbage. The other day, I made a choy salad with a little light dressing. Super tasty.
- Green onions - $0.99 per bunch -- $1/bunch is basically the new normal when it comes to green onions.
- Ginger - $1.99 per lb -- Good price. You'll often find it more in the $3/lb range.
- Garlic - $1.29 5-pack -- Nice!
- Asian pears - $1.88 per lb -- Nice! Not bad for a fancier fruit. In season, you can score these easily under 1.50/lb
- Apples (Gala) - $1.49 per lb -- Not bad for a good apple, though it's still a bit high. 1.25/lb would be the better rate. But, short of sending your kids off to school with a head of bok choy in their lunch, I don't know what we're supposed to do here...
- Brick cheese (Armstrong) - $4.44 400g bar -- Nice! Sub-$5 brick cheese!
- Silk plant bev - $3.49 1.74-1.89L -- Nice little sale price. Down from about $5 this week.
- Carole's Japanese Cheesecake - $8.88 500g cake -- All I can think of is Charlie from It's Always Sunny, in the mail room freaking out about Pepe Silvia, and how there's no Carole in HR.
- Dr Oetkey pizzas (Ristorante) - $4.49 whatever -- Dude, what happened to these?! They used to be, like, $2-2.50 in 2020.
- Produce Price Rating: medium low (more on the medium side)
Giant Tiger (*note the VIP prices; sales begin today) (price matcher)
- Chicken breast (boneless skinless) - $6.97 500-818g -- Aaahhhh boyyyy! Freakin' lotteries again. Limit of 5. Assuming there's 650g in a pack, that'S 1.5lb for $7, which is about 4.66/lb, which is good. Find a scale and check the weights!
- Bacon (Olymel) - $3.88 375g pack -- Like the Leadbetter's at Farmboy, it's step-up bacon, and it's a good sale price.
- Breakfast sausage (Olymel) - $3.88 375g pack -- Not feeling bacon, you can swap out to sausages.
- Celery - $1.88 per head -- Great price, but careful, these are often smaller heads. Two of these is about the same as one big $4 head at Basics, for example.
- Iceberg lettuce - $1.88 per head -- Good price for lettuce!
- Green onions - $1.88 per bunch -- This may sound pricey, but I found the bunches have suffered some shrinkage. Last I went to GT, these were bigger bunches. Mind your step when it comes to green onions, I guess.
- Salad kit (Dole) - $1.97 340g bag -- Great price for a salad kit. These can range easily into the $4 range. In fact, Basics has them for $4 this week. So, consider these half-price salad kits.
- Mini cucumbers - $1.97 6-pack -- Nice, $2 is a good rate. We were seeing $4 6-packs some weeks (though, I doubt we've seen the end of those days...)
- Apples (Royal Gala) - $2.88 3lb bag -- Good rate on galas. On that $1/lb target.
- Lemons - $2.88 2lb bag -- Fair price for lemons.
- Clementines - $2.88 2lb bag -- GREAT price for clementines!
- Cream cheese (Lactantia) - $2.47 250g bar -- Great price! Can often range into $4 for the same bar.
- Dr Oetkey pizzas (Ristorante) - $4.97 whatever -- What the... How did it get worse from Freshco to GT....
- Produce Price Rating: Generally on the low side.
Green Fresh Supermarket (Vanier) (check
https://greenfreshottawa20.wixsite.com/greenfreshottawa) * Produce Price Rating: Usually very competitive, catering to Asian cuisine. Warning: their newest sales start on Fridays - so this is a late advertising of their sales.
IGA (price matcher)
- Lobster - $8.77 per lb -- Scene Member Price.
- Bacon (Mere Michel) - $3.99 375g pack -- More $4 mid-range-ish bacon going around.
- Greenouse tomatoes - $0.99 per lb -- Nice! Another great $1/lb tomato deal!
- Blackberries - $1.44 half pint -- Scene Member Price.
- Brick cheese (Armstrong) - $3.99 400g bar -- Awesome!
- Dr Oetkey pizzas (Ristorante) - $3.47 whatever -- Bon, criss! And even then it's still too pricey for show shitty these pizzas are. What's a walk-in special at a pizza place these days?
- Produce Price Rating: Medium
Independent - Beef brisket - $4.99 per lb -- Awesome price for beef brisket.
- Chicken breast or thighs (boneless skinless) - $4.99 per lb -- Good price. Go for the chicken and get out.
- Pork tenderloin - $3.49 per lb -- Fair price for tenderloin.
- Avocado - $2.49 each -- You know, you wanna give them the benefit of the doubt, but at 2.50 for an avocado, it better be big enough to kill a man, whether eaten or via bludgeoning.
- Blueberries - $2.77 full pint -- Awesome price!
- Brick cheese (Black Diamond) - $4.88 400g bar -- Sub-$5 cheese is always welcome.
- Produce Price Rating: fairly high with few exceptions
Loblaws - Pork tenderloin - $3.49 per lb -- Fair price for tenderloin.
- Asparagus - $2.99 per lb -- Not bad for asparagus. We've seen better, but it's also not $4/lb we can commonly see.
- Salad Kits (PC) - $11.00 for 2 300g-ish -- We had mentioned earlier that GT has Dole-branded kits, same size, for $2. At $2, Dole could spit in my salad, and I still wouldn't look at these PC kits.
- Bok choy - $2.99 per lb -- Freshco has theirs for 99c/lb.
- Strawberries - $1.99 454g shell -- Awesome price for strawberries! Let's hope the quality is there. Sometimes cheap is cheap for a reason.
- Brick cheese (Black Diamond) - $4.88 400g bar -- Sub-$5 cheese is always welcome.
- Produce Price Rating: fairly high with few exceptions
Provigo - Atlantic Lobster (live) - $7.99 per lb -- Good price on lobster.
- Beef striploin steak - $7.88 per lb -- Good price on steak, but no indication of the grade.
- Chicken legs - $2.49 per lb -- Faiaverage price for chicken legs. Same as Adonis.
- Strawberries - $2.44 454g shell -- Not as good as the 1.99 deal, but still quite good.
- Brick cheese (Ptit Quebec) - $4.88 400g bar -- Sub-$5 cheese is always welcome. Took some digging, but I found out that it's the same owners as those of Cracker Barrel, hence the easy-same-price swap between Provigo and Loblaws.
- Produce Price Rating: fairly high with few exceptions
Maxi (price matcher)
- Whole chicken - $1.99 per lb -- Awesome price for chicken! Learn to carve up a chicken. There's real savings there!
- Pork chops - $2.88 per lb -- Fair price for pork chops.
- Atlantic Salmon - $8.99 per lb -- Good price for salmon, under that $10/lb target.
- Small potatoes (Yellow, Russet) - $0.94 3lb bag -- Wow! 31c/lb! That's really good!
- Celery - $2.49 per head -- Good price for celery. Let's hope the heads are big and nice, and not "size-scaled according to price".
- Beefsteak tomatoes - $1.49 per lb -- Good price for tomatoes, but we're seeing some $1/lb sales. But if the quality is there, don't hesitate.
- Sweet peppers (green and red) - $3.99 4-pack -- Fair going price for peppers.
- Blueberries - $1.87 full pint -- WOW! Insanely good price for blueberries.
- Apples (Imperfect) - $6.00 6lb bag -- But is it 6lb?! Weigh the bag on a scale and check. Too much funny business in the fixed-weight products lately.
- Brick cheese (Ptit Quebec) - $4.87 400g bar -- Sub-$5 cheese is always welcome. Took some digging, but I found out that it's the same owners as those of Cracker Barrel, hence the easy-same-price swap between Provigo and Loblaws.
- Flour (Five Roses, Robinhood) - $13.99 10kg bag -- Hmm, these bags have seen a small increase from $11-12...
- Dry pasta (Primo) - $1.33 750g packs -- Great price! Stock-up a little!
- Produce Price Rating: Generally medium low pricing! This store can post some impressive deals at times.
Metro - Beef prime rib roast and steaks (AA) - $8.99 per lb -- I want to like this sale. It's prime rib, which is a nice cut, but I wish it was AAA grade. Best go in with options in mind, and make your decision when you see the meat. Give it a poke, check the fat lines, make sure it's going to be nice and tender.
- Pork loin chops or roast - $2.99 per lb -- If the beef doesn't look good, you've got a pork parachute.
- Chicken breast and thighs (boneless skinless, Prime) - $5.99 per lb -- Not the best price, but definitely a little lower than regular.
- Strawberries - $1.99 454g shell -- Awesome price for strawberries! Again, always mind the quality at these prices.
- Burrata - $20.00 2x 250g balls -- This cheese is stupendous. It's a treat and priced accordingly, but worth trying. Think of super-fresh mozz balls or fior de latte, but with a mozz-cottage-cheese thing going on inside.
- Dr Oetkey pizzas (Ristorante) - $3.49 whatever -- How is it that we go from $5 for these, to $3.50... That's such a huge swing...
- Produce Price Rating: High. Kinda like Sobeys. You can see a 50% average mark-up compared to a lot of other stores. It's nice produce, but it costs you.
No Frills (price matcher)
- Chicken drumsticks - $1.87 per lb -- Good enough price for chicken drumsticks. I'd rather see legs at this price, but this is fair.
- Smoked sausages (No Name) - $6.99 900g pack -- Goodness these look a LOT like the Compliments bag at Freshco lol...
- Peameal bacon - $2.88 per lb -- Interesting. Sometimes it's hard to find peameal for less than $4. Meanwhile, I've never bought the stuff, and I don't think I've seen many put it in their cart. I don't get it lol.
- Atlantic Salmon - $9.77 per lb -- On that $10/lb target.
- Corn - $0.33 per ear -- Great price for ears of corn!!
- Potatoes (Red, Yellow, Russet) - $4.99 10lb bag -- Fair sale price for potatoes. Regular prices can float easily over $7 now...
- Blueberries - $1.99 full pint -- Another fantastic blueberry sale!
- Pears (Bartlett) - $0.88 per lb -- Awesome price for pears!!!
- Milk (Neilson) - $4.88 4L bagged -- Great sale price on milk considering it's about $6-7 at the very least.
- Canned tuna (Ocean's) - $0.99 170g -- There's some funny business in the flyer this week. There's, like, 3 different cans of tuna. This one for 99c, a Clover Leaf for 2.99, and another Ocean's for 2.99.
- Produce Price Rating: Generally quite low, selectively amazing for some items.
Produce Depot (usually a little late on the flyer)
https://producedepot.ca/ - Ground beef (medium) - $4.99 per lb -- Not bad. Not a stock-up price, but this would be good burger material.
- Beef top sirloin steak - $7.99 per lb -- No grade mentioned, so mind your step. But if the quality looks good, it'd make a great treat!
- Cod fillet (fresh) - $11.99 per lb -- Fair price for fresh cod.
- Cucumber - $0.49 each -- WOW WOW! That's a DEAL! Meanwhile, Loblaws and affiliates can't sell us a cucumber for less than $1 on average, or 2.49 for a fancy organic one...
- Flat cabbage - $0.99 per lb -- Nice! Great to see cheap cabbage. I think we're going to see a resurgence of hardier, self-stable veg like this becoming popular.
- Sweet peppers - $1.99 per lb -- Great price for peppers. It's hard to find off-season peppers for less than $3/lb.
- Oranges - $1.29 per lb -- Not amazing, but still pretty good. $1/lb is really the better target. But, a couple of oranges won't risk the coop.
- Strawberries - $1.69 454g shell -- WOW! Produce Depot coming around to prove a point! These won't last, so plan your trip if you want these!
- Cheese counter - Fontina (Castello) - $2.79 per 100g -- Nice cheese for a good price. It's not cheap per se, but it's on point with prices for artisanal cheese.
- Deli - Pastrami - $2.39 per 100g -- Great price for nice deli meat!!!
- Produce Price Rating: Medium-low with very competitive specials on a shortened flyer. The small flyer is nice because it doesn't uselessly feature $6 heads of cauliflower and extremely high-price items that are either a confusion on the consumer, or an insult on the injury of not being able to afford supreme quality items.
Real Canadian Superstore (price matcher)
- Beef sirloin tip roast or steaks - $4.99 per lb -- Great price! I wonder about the grade, and I think I'd sooner do the roast because I know could get a tender bite out of the cooking method, versus fighting a tough steak that'll never rest into anything tender.
- Chicken breast (bone-in, skinless) - $3.99 per lb -- Good price for chicken breast, and bone-in is not bad. Boneless chicken loses out on a lot of flavour and moisture from the bone. And, there's so little bone along the breast that you don't really face the issue of undercooking it like you would with a leg (which requires higher temps or longer cooks, which can dry out if left too long in the oven or on the grill).
- Smoked sausages (No Name) - $9.99 900g pack -- From No Frills to RCSS, it'll cost you $3 to be in the store to get the same sausages...
- Asparagus - $2.99 per lb -- Good price for asparagus. When the crop-outs come through, we can see this dip to $2/lb, but out of that you can see as high as $4/lb.
- Mini cucumbers - $4.00 11-pack -- Well, considering we're seeing so many 6-packs go for $2, you've lose a cucumber with this 11-pack.
- Sweet peppers - $3.50 4-pack -- Great deal on a 4-pack.
- Vidalia onions - $5.99 3lb bag -- Sigh... $2/lb onions... Good onions, but damn...
- Potatoes (Imperfect) - $6.00 15lb bag -- Excellent! Great potato deal here, don't skip these! Pro tip: prep/cook whole potatoes in advance. Steam or pressure cook them, and keep them in the fridge. They slice real easy, and they fry/sauté really easily. Great for breakfasts, and a great alternative to bread.
- Grape tomatoes - $6.00 907g shell -- Great price for grape tomatoes. Freeze the ones that you don't use, and use them for stocks or to throw into soup to stew a bit before serving.
- Strawberries - $3.98 2lb shell -- Great deal. $2/lb, basically. That aligns with other great sales we see on strawberries.
- Pineapple - $3.00 each -- Good price for pineapple. $2 is the better target.
- Cantaloupe - $3.00 each -- Easy to find cantaloupe for $3, $2 occurs here and there. For the amount of melon you get, I don't think it's worth chasing that $1.
- Honeydew and Mini Watermelon - $4.99 each -- Meh prices for these melons. Not terrible, but not the greatest.
- Brick cheese (No Name) - $4.99 400g bar -- $5 brick cheese!
- Deli - Ziggy's Beef deli - $2.50 per 100g -- A consistent returning item and price for decent deli meat.
- Canned tomatoes (PC Blue Menu) - $1.59 796ml can -- Good price for canned tomatoes. Sometimes you can score canned tomatoes for as low as 1.25, 1.50 is still a very good price. $2 is not that great. 1.25 is the real stock-up price.
- Flour (Robinhood, Five Roses) - $11.99 10kg bag -- More and more I stand by having a 10kg bag in the pantry along with a jar of quick rise yeast. Making your own bread is not difficult. It's a fantastic skill to have. And after a dozen loaves, you'll get the hang of it.
- Produce Price Rating: Generally medium-low pricing, selectively amazing for some items.
Sobeys - Chicken breast or thighs (boneless skinless, Compliments) - $5.88 per lb -- Upper-end fair going-rate for chicken breast. It's regular Adonis pricing, and more expensive than some of the better sales we see floating around.
- Chicken breast or thighs (boneless skinless, no antibiotics, Compliments) - $6.99 per lb -- Interesting to see the no-antibiotics version be $1/lb more. I wonder how that scales across all stores and brands... Seems to me $1/lb extra isn't bad.
- Pork tenderloin - $2.99 per lb -- Scene Member Price.
- Pork back rib - $2.99 per lb -- Scene Member Price.
- Beef brisket - $5.99 per lb -- $6/lb for AA grade ain't bad. Independent has the better deal on brisket, but choices must be made.
- Beef eye of round - $6.99 per lb -- It's a big cut of beef, but if you know how to spot and cut around the grain, you could get beef cubes, strips and marinating steaks out of this very easily.
- Scallops - $21.99 per lb -- Now, I usually don't recommend scallops, but I saw some scallop prices range of $28-32/lb. Farm Boy is just charging $3 for 2 scallops. LOL. And then you can score 300g frozen for $10 at Super C. Or get Metro bay scallops for $10/lb. No wonder I always go cross-eyed with scallop pricing.
- Cucumbers - $0.99 each -- Great price. Not the 50c sales we're seeing come up, but certainly better than some historical pricing we've seen.
- Red vine tomatoes - $0.99 per lb -- Awesome price for tomatoes!
- Brick cheese (Compliments) - $4.99 400g -- Good ol' $5 brick cheese!
- Cooked and frozen pork ribs (Compliments) - $13.99 680g pack -- I bring this up not because it's a valid suggestion. I bring this up because the same 1.5lbs of pork rib can cost you as low as $4.50 at the same store with the Scene pricing. You could get 4.5lb of rib. That's at least 2 big racks, which easily feeds 6 people with sides. Take that in. It is non-trivial! Manufactured/prepared products like this suck us dry.
- Dr Oetkey pizzas (Giuseppe) - $4.94 whatever -- Here we go again...
- Produce Price Rating: Generally a high price store, especially for produce. Some items are 50% more than more value-oriented stores. Kinda like Metro, some of the deals can be quite good.
Super C - Chicken legs - $1.29 per lb -- WOW! Stock up! Fire up the BBQ! Marinate those legs over morning in some lemon juice, a little wine, rosemary, garlic, salt, pepper. Makes a great dinner main!
- Ground pork (extra lean) - $2.49 per lb -- WOW! Excellent price for ground pork!
- Tomahawk beef steak - $13.75 per lb -- Now, I'm not one to often suggest steaks like, this, but this is actually a tremendous cut. It might make a nice main for a special dinner!
- Bacon (Mere Michel) - $3.77 375g pack -- Good price for decent bacon. Lots of these sales going around.
- Asparagus - $2.77 per lb -- Great price for asparagus!
- Red vine tomatoes - $0.84 per lb -- WOW! Cheapest in town!
- Cucumbers - $0.99 each -- Nice! Let's hope these cucumber sales keep lowering!!
- Sweet potatoes - $0.99 per lb -- Great price! We're often seeing loose sweet potatoes range into the $1.30+/lb range.
- Blueberries - $0.99 half-pint -- Great price for blueberries!
- Lemons and limes - $0.99 for 3 -- Wow! Awesome price for citrus!
- Cantaloupe - $1.84 each -- Awesome! There's that $2 cantaloupe I was hoping to see!
- Oka cheese (and others!) - $4.75 170g pack -- Fantastic sale!!! Includes Monsier Gustav St-Paulin, Agropur Grand Cheddar, Notre-Dame brie, l'Extra Camembert. That's a lot of nice cheese at a nice price!
- Cheese Sale - $18 for 3 - varies -- Super cheese deal! Lots of varieties avialable, and you can score a lot of different products for basically $6 each.
- Earth's Own plant bev - $7.00 for 2x 1.75-1.89 --
- Dr Oetkey pizzas (Ristorante) - $3.47 whatever -- I think we can agree that these should be about 3.50 these days. Not $5...
- Produce Price Rating: Generally low, but can creep into medium for some items. But, there's always something decent available!
T&T Supermarket https://www.tntsupermarket.com * Produce Price Rating: Usually very competitive, catering to Asian cuisine. Warning: their newest sales start on Fridays - so this is a late advertising of their sales.
Walmart - Whole chicken - $1.94 per lb -- Nice! I love $2/lb chicken! It puts us more on par with those loss-leader cooked chickens.
- Bacon (Great Value) - $2.94 375g pack -- Another bacon sale!
- Dinner sausage (Your Fresh Market) - $4.97 500g 4-pack -- Good price for raw sausage, but it's also close to the fresh-made price you can find at some stores ($6/lb). Note: precooked sausages and wieners are not something we should eat too often. They're packed with extra salts and fats, especially nitrites, which are used as a preservative, and it keeps meat pink. It's found in basically any processed meat you find on the shelf. In small quantities, it's fine, but North America is big on consuming these sorts of products, and some reports suggest 1/2 a hotdog a day, along with the bun and condiments, is linked to a 20% hike in rates of intestinal cancers. Raw fresh-made sausage often do not have nitrites. Just some food for thought and a reminder to check the ingredients listed on the package.
- Vine tomatoes - $1.94 per lb -- Not that great considering the sub-$1/lb sales we've seen.
- Green peppers - $1.94 per lb -- Fair and good rate on green peppers.
- Zucchini - $1.94 per lb -- A little high, but on par with other stores this week.
- Eggplant - $1.94 per lb -- A little high, but on par with other stores this week.
- Green onion - $0.94 for 2 -- Ouuu that's good for green onion. I was just saying $1 was the going-rate. This is half that! Excellent deal!
- Cilantro bunch - $0.94 for 2 -- Oh wow, that's really good for fresh cilantro. Bunches can be 99c, 1.50, or even $2.
- Mango (Red or Ataulfo) - $0.94 for 2 -- Awesome price for mango! There's an opportunity here for a mango salsa!!!
- Brick cheese (Armstrong) - $4.94 400g bar -- Good ol' $5 brick!
- Frozen veg (Great Value) - $2.47 500-750g -- More of a reminder to look out for this sort of pricing on frozen veg. Bags of corn, peas, string beans, these can all be had for about this price. And, they're perfect nutritious, if not more than "fresh" on a shelf as it's frozen after being picked when ready, instead of picked early and thrown onto a truck for a thousand kms.
- Olive oil (Sapurito) - $11.94 1L bottle -- Wow! $3 off the average doesn't sound like a lot, but 20% is 20%. It's kind of like "buy 4 and get 1 free".
- Butter (Gay Lea) - $4.94 454g bar -- $5 butter. Still expensive as all heck, but it's not $7-8.
- Produce Price Rating: A little all over the place. Some really good prices between a lot of average pricing.
Costco (Note that these are the online/shipped prices - reduce each item by $3 for in-store pricing)
- NOTE: NEED TO REVISE - --
- Paper Towel (Kirkland) - $27.99 12-roll pack -- 2-ply; 160 sheets
- Paper Towel (Bounty) - $27.49 12-roll pack -- 2-ply; 86 sheets
- Toilet Paper (Kirkland) - $25.99 30-roll pack -- 2-ply; 380 sheets
- Toilet Paper (Cashmere) - $24.99 40-roll pack -- 2-ply; 250 sheets (on sale)
- Dish soap (Dawn Platinum) - $18.99 2.66L -- Food Basics often has this jug for $10!
- Laundry detergent (Purex) - $24.99 9.24L -- 250 loads
- Garbage bags (30 gallon; large) - $15.99 100-pack -- Amazon has Glad standard 74L bags, 100-packs for $23, sometimes less if on sale
- Countertop green bin liners - $21.99 125-pack -- Amazon has Glad Compostable green bin liners 100-packs for $18, sometimes less if on sale
- Produce Price Rating: I need to do a proper check to be sure, but I find it's pretty average. There's an illusion of getting a good deal because of the bulk. Just be careful.
Jean Coutu (new sales start Fridays)
- Produce Price Rating: I have to start checking these just in case...
Shoppers Drug Mart (new sales start Fridays)
- Produce Price Rating: Sometimes they have cheap butter, eggs, and milk on weekends.

~First~ HHH/Herbert’s Hundred Harem
“But I have to...”
“It’s your lunch. You’re off the fucking clock for the next hour and a half and if I see you near a hot zone that didn’t appear under your feet then there’s going to be trouble.” The current leader who’s chosen codename is simply Eight tells Herbert and he sighs. He won’t be in the command position for at least twelve hours and until then is a field agent.
“Just get going.” Eight says and he sighs before checking his communicator. “I will shoot that thing out of your grip if that’s work.”
“I’m checking my wives schedules. A family meal sounds amazing right now.”
“It does. Get going.” Eight tells him and he nods. “I suggest a shower and a change of clothing. You smell of arson.”
“You tend to smell like the things you fight.” Herbert replies and rolls his neck. “I’ll take a shower at home. It’s not like we can hide the fact that The Undaunted are beating out wildfires that are popping up all over Centris.”
“True. Now, out.”
“I’m still going to defend myself and my family though. If someone tries anything, they’re getting shot.”
“Well, duh.” Eight replies and Herbert smirks before leaving.
“Not in the mood.” He says pointing a gun in the face of a Cloaken who was on the approach as he leaves The Dauntless. The invisible figure that is nonetheless completely obvious to him backs away. He looks up towards the sky, past the ring of vaguely visible light from the plates and into the galaxy beyond the blue sky. “Hell of a time to leave Sir, but wherever you are, I’m sure you’re causing thrice the chaos we have here. No doubt I’ll have the news of what you’re up to fall on my lap long after it’s too late to do anything about it.”

Many, many, many lightyears away a very handsome man with a chiselled jaw and short but feathered dark hair thanks his waitress with a smile and sends the woman off in a daydream as he browses the options on his newly received menu. Well... not really. He already knows what he’s going to order and is using it as a visual block for his browsing the news. He looks like he stepped off the more... appropriate cover of a titillation magazine and then buttoned up his shirt. To say he had everyone’s attention was an understatement, but that just meant that no one was paying enough attention to see the near invisible distortion of a scanning drone slowly going around and giving everyone a surreptitious scan.
“Well then my boy, it seems you’ve found some entertainment. Good for you.” He notes to himself with a dazzling smile that the state officer that’s trying to get useful information on him finds VERY distracting. It was the fun thing about tyrannical regimes. They rarely employed true competence and as such it was very easy to subvert them.
•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•
Herbert hums as he walks into the kitchen, freshly scrubbed, newly dressed and therefore in more business casual. He buttons up the last button on his vest and casually steps over an attempt to trip him and then does a bit of quick footwork to scoop up and launch a Purriz at the woman in question. All without even looking at her.
There’s a squeal of surprise and he laughs.
“Sorry Mirara! I’m a little on the alert side today!”
“You’re always on the alert side!” Mirara protests.
“I am especially alert today then!” He corrects himself as he heads to the fridge. “I’ve been moving hard though so I need to eat something. Can I make you anything?”
“Oh! Are you grilling?”
“Maybe, our meat stores are pretty good right?” He asks opening the ‘fridge’ it’s more a many sectioned stasis chamber. Stasis sicknesses could be lethal, but would preserve a body flawlessly. But to preserve food the only issue was if the stasis effect clung to the item in question. But it would take a toddler, or someone with the mind of a toddler to be unable to wipe it off.
“We still have a Sea-Quake tail?” He asks in surprise as he pulls out the shrunken drawer. The gigantic shrimp tail was a colourful thing before being cooked, but also dirty, grit sticks to them easily to camouflage them. But clean them off and their a rainbow of colours.
“We do! Oh my goodness yes!” Mirara exclaims and he grins.
“Alright, grab me the cooking oil and I’ll fry this beauty up. Sea-Quake steaks for the feasting.” He says and the ‘hidden’ girls on the ceiling start dropping down with exclamations of ‘steak!’ and a few of them demanding to know if their ambush was off.
“Ambush was never on to begin with girls.” Herbert replies pointing to the shining counter top and it’s rounded edge. “I saw you all when I walked in. Now who wants some sea-quake steak?”
The answer is everyone, meaning that there’s only a small portion for each of them. He makes up his own with water infused with nutrient powder. It’s mildly gritty and far from filling, but having an overly full stomach when you have to run around, sneak and fight is just asking to vomit if things start going even slightly wrong.
•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•×•
“Excuse me.” He says as he grabs a Valrin woman around the waist and vanishing with her before returning and doing the same to the stunned Lutrin she had been talking to and only after he’s cleared out the area, and then another quarter second later, does the falling aircar finally crash down.
There are several sonic booms as a figure that’s nothing more than a blur opens the door to the sabotaged vehicle and extracts the survivors of the bomb going off and removes the dead body as well to lay her down near her loved ones.
The sound of the booms and crunching of metal, shattering of class and breaking of plastic all hit around the same time and the unholy cacophony assaults the senses even as Herbert finally stops moving and pants. At his small size moving at those speeds is not recommended. It’s not about energy or friction, Axiom takes care of that. But whenever he’s fully phased in he’s so small that the resistance of the relatively still air pushes down on his chest and stomach like being trapped in a vice grip.
Needing to move fast is one thing, needing to do it while barely able to breathe is another. He needs more inflexible armour on his front. Or armour that can harden to stop things from pressing down on his chest or stomach.
“Alright, all of you get under... right, Slohbs can’t move without the muck. Sorry.” He begins to say as he picks up the clearly traumatized and horrified Slohb that’s producing lime green slime from the core he rescued. He gives her enough time to get a thin layer at least and picks her up. “Make one bump if you want somewhere dry, two if you want something wet.”
Two bumps rise up as he leads the living further away from where the aircars are zipping around. A nearby restaurant has people cowering in it and he requests a pitcher of water and then uses it to help hydrate the Slohb woman a bit before placing her down on a table when she has enough slime to make a tendril that reaches into the pitcher to let her drink at her own pace.
She drains it dry in five seconds and he gets her a refill before opening up a wrapped nutrition brick that she grabs from him and absorbs to start producing more and thicker slime that quickly starts to take the form of a small child.
“Well, that was the scariest thing that ever happened to me.” The Slohb states and Herbert shrugs.
“I suppose. Now if you’ll excuse me miss, I need to get moving.” Herbert says. “All of Centris has gone mad and there’s this kind of silliness all over the place.”
“Silliness!?”
“I just tore your vital organs out of your body and you’re getting better after a drink and a snack. That’s freaking weird.” Herbert says in his, ‘Oh gosh the galaxy is so weird!’ routine to engage people and get them thinking again and past any sense of shock.
“Anyways, gotta go! You girls be safe now!” He says before rushing off and after another hotzone.

“You stupid cops just don’t know when to stop!” The woman screams as she hurls the car straight at them. Something impacts it from the side and it crunches into a space the size of a marble while venting raw energy out the top or bottom before detonating in a shower of thin, tiny effects.
“Love this thing.” A broad shouldered man riding a warform Takra-Takra says as he slots another round into his strange gun.
“But miss lady here won’t love what comes next for that stunt.” A tiny voice says from behind her and she turns to look and only gets a glimpse of an itty-bitty little figure of a boy that she somehow hadn’t sensed balancing on the ridge of her tail.
Then the Jorgua is knocked right the hell out and the local police busy themselves and arresting her despite the cells already being cartoonishly full.
“Today just isn’t going to end anytime soon is it?” Chenk asks and Herbert shakes his head before tossing him further ammunition for his Caster Gun.
“No, no it’s not. Best of luck I...” His communicator goes off again and he looks at it. “Hunh... That’s a self sorting problem.”
“What is?”
“Some idiot is in the middle of the former council building and is threatening to blow herself up if they go through their plans to demolish it. With explosives.” Herbert says.
“Legally she has to be stopped.”
“But it’s really tempting not to.” Herbert says before taking a breath. “Alright, I’m off.”
“I’d tell you to kick ass, but there’s just so many right now.” Chenk says in a dramatic tone.
“I KNOW right?” Herbert asks before teleporting away.

Everything was falling but nothing was landing. Something had happened to the stabilizers and there was sabotage in the plate. They were falling and not only would the vast majority of the residents die, but the sheer damage it would cause to the nearby spires would...
The world SHIFTS as SOMETHING grabs onto the Axiom and makes it OBEY. Gravity is back, everyone hits the ground and not even the most delicate of glass structures are so much as scuffed. SOMETHING is here, SOMETHING is not amused and whatever that SOMETHING is. It’s just saved billions of lives.
Reality twists and suddenly a gigantic Nagasha is there, a royal hood flaring out and a stern outfit covers her up. It’s nothing less than The Trytite Lady and under her immense will the entire Plate floats back into position. A few moments later a tiny human appears next to her.
“Backups restored ma’am, main engines are coming online and the damage is contained. Thank you for the assistance.” The adorable little man says and she nods. Then reality itself warps in front of her and she slithers through to return order to this chaotic world.
“Damn, they really are the big girls on campus.” Herbert notes to himself before looking to his audience. “And... yeah you just literally found god. God damn.”
Then he’s gone as well as she’s just left staring there.

The problem with breaks, is that if you’re in the flow it breaks just that. And when they’re mandated for mental health purposes you don’t get to just ignore them. Even though being forced to sit still while everything was still going completely berserk around you was exactly the kind of thing to drive people insane.
The system still needed work and was erring on the side of doing everything it could to stop The Undaunted from going mad. Which while a nice thing to do, was not the kind of thing needed in the middle of a planetary scale borderline rebellion.
So he’s trying to centre himself a little more and is sitting on top of The Dauntless and takes a few deep breaths before leaning to the side and then flipping off whoever sent that at him even as it deflects off the hull.
The next four seconds are very fast and while his forward charge is ill advised it’s just a distraction as it’s an illusion as he approaches from the side while the opposing force tries to get a bead on him.
“Hello stupid.” He says as he grabs their gun and drop kicks the woman in the face before turning around and breaking the weapon against them as he baseball swings it to slam her into the far wall.
“Fun.” He notes as she charges with a large trytite knife.

2024.05.05 14:00 PoorRingo Not Drinking Today! Day 46
Good morning! My hardest sober day of the week has arrived once again. This time it’s Cinco De Mayo, but I’m not going to crush a case of Modelo (and shots of Patron) this year. Instead, I have some skirt steak marinating in lime/orange juice in the refrigerator.. so I am going to make fajitas, Mexican rice, and pico de gallo.
Last weekend, my girlfriend and I purchased a board game called “Aeons End” and had a blast playing it. It’s a game where we work together as a team to beat the game, instead of playing against each other and potentially getting too competitive lol. I think I will get in a nice walk, play the game, do some laundry and watch a baseball game. Old me would have thought this sounded boring, now I’m really excited to do it!!
I will NOT drink today!! I hope everyone has a great Sunday :)

2024.05.03 16:33 pharmgirl_92 I have a lot to say about cocktails
It was so fun to hear someone else say they love spicy drinks! Until recently, my favorite cocktail was a strawberry jalapeño margarita (think sweet and tangy and spicy, sooo good! Highly recommend the addition of strawberry). Recently, I got to try a cucumber jalapeño mojhito, which has taken over that top spot. Very cool and refreshing and spicy all in one go. Also, I feel like lime and a steak goes great together?? So strong disagree on margaritas not pairing well with steak. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

2024.05.01 14:55 crimsontape This week's grocery review - Sales for May 2nd to May 8th - Shorter list this week, but still lots of great deals around. Super C and Walmart did really well with some of their sales. Cinco de Mayo is around the corner, but not a lot of relief for essential ingredients.
(As always, flyers are out Wednesdays, most store sales for the new flyer start on Thursdays)
Adonis - Chicken drumsticks - $1.99 per lb -- Nice! Good price for drumsticks. Basis of many tasty meals!
- Ground beef (lean, halal) - $4.99 per lb -- Fair price for ground. Not a crazy-low price, but fair.
- Royal Sea Bream (free cleaning) - $7.99 per lb -- Nice! This is still around! I gotta get around to buying one of these!
- Walleye (free cleaning) - $4.99 per lb -- Oh cool! Walleye! That's not common to see ads or flyers.
- Tiger shrimp (thawed, 31/40) - $9.99 per lb -- Pricey, but good shrimp.
- Shrimp (frozen raw, peeled, Blue Tide, 31/40) - $6.99 340g bag -- Really, it's maybe a $1-2 premium for the raw tiger shrimp.
- Cod fillet - $8.99 per lb -- Nice, fair price for Cod.
- Alaskan pollock fillet - $4.99 per lb -- Good price for pollock. Might be nice to sear and quickly bake, serve with a nice chimichuri…
- Basa steak (Blue Tide) - $6.99 1kg pack -- Interesting. That's basically 3.20/lb for fish… Hmm…
- Cucumber - $0.88 each -- Excellent! Cheap cucumber!!!
- Corn - $2.99 for 5 ears -- Fair price for corn. 60c an ear.
- Vine tomatoes - $0.88 per lb -- Excellent price for tomato! Might be still out-of-season quality. Mind your step.
- Astro yugurt multipack - $4.49 12x100g pack -- Good price quick lunch addition.
- Brick cheese (Armstrong) - $4.99 400g bar -- Good to see $5 bricks.
- Macedonian feta (Doric) - $34.99 3kg tub -- Info: Macedonian-style is smooth, spreadable. Great value per 100g, but it's the "open your own sandwich shop" size.
- Greek feta (Krinos) - $23.99 1kg tub -- Fair rate for feta. I wonder how this brand sizes up against others.
- Rondelé cheesespread (Président) - $3.49 125g tub -- Nice! I freakin' love this stuff.
- Brie and Camembert (Alexis de Portneuf) - $3.99 125g wheel -- Fair price for nice cheese.
- Deli - Bastourma - $3.79 per 100g -- Oh! I tried this stuff! Amazing. Maybe not for everyone, but I had a lot of fun adding it to a meat/cheese board.
- Deli - Beef salami (Solmaz) - $1.79 per 100g -- Always…
- Deli - Chicken bologna (Alzahraa) - $1.29 per 100g -- Cheap deli…
- Deli - Mortadella (Marcangelo) - $1.99 per 100g -- Ath the Adonis…
- Beef bologna (Alzahraa) - $5.29 400g chub -- Great value! Slice this with $5 brick cheese and you're a cracker away from a very cost-effective lunchable.
- Lebanese green or black olives - $0.99 per 100g -- Nice! I really have to do a massive sitdown with a bunch of Adonis counter goods…
- Kalamata unpitted - $1.99 per 100g -- Kalamata are my favourite olive!
- Olive oil (Gallo) - $13.88 1L bottle -- Fair sale on olive oil. Hard to find these 1L bottles for less.
- Produce Price Rating: Medium, but always has well-priced chicken, the deli meat sale rotations are always fantastic, and just the overall variety of goods is refreshing. Personal favourite store.
Farm Boy - Whole chicken (fresh, Grade A)) - $2.99 per lb -- Fair price for whole chicken, but $2/lb is the better target.
- Pork tenderloin - $3.99 per lb -- Fair rate on tenderloin, but not a sale/savings range. I prefer aiming for "basic loin" that you can find for as low as $2/lb.
- Basa fillet (frozen, Green Ocean) - $4.99 907g pack -- WOW! Great deal! That's 2.50/lb for a nice, light tasting white fish.
- Sweet peppers - $3.99 4-pack -- Great deal!
- Mini cucumbers - $3.99 2lb pack -- Fair price for minis. You're probably looking at 8 units or so… But don't quote me. Check it for yourself. But, still, $2/lb is a fair rate on mini cuce.
- Napa and choy (various) - $2.98 per pack -- Bit ambiguous for the weight and size of the packs, but this is worthy checking out. $1/lb is a good rate. Never shy from the scales!
- Clemetines - $3.88 2lb bag -- Nice! Fair sale-ish rate.
- Honeydew melon - $2.99 each -- Nice!
- Deli - MTL-style or oven roasted turkey (Hayter's) - $2.99 per 100g -- Haha Hayters gonna Hayte… LOL…. Goodness, it's too early… Fair price for high quality deli product.
- Bagels (6-pack, various) - $4.99 buy 1 get 1 free -- Great deal for good bagels! However, the real question is: how many bagels does it take to get through 3kg of Macedonian feta LOL…
- Produce Price Rating: High
Farmers Pick (can be a little late on their flyer) (
https://www.farmerspick.ca/flyer-specials)
Food Basics - Chicken leg quarters - $1.78 per lb -- Excellent price for chicken!
- Bacon (Selection) - $2.98 375g pack -- Good price for bacon. Limit of 3. Which is fine, because we shouldn't be eating that much bacon anyway!
- Brussel sprouts (bulk) - $2.98 per lb -- Fair sale-rate. Not amazing, can be as low as $2/lb.
- Cucumber - $0.88 each -- Excellent! Cheap cucumber!!!
- Vine tomatoes - $0.88 per lb -- Excellent price for tomato! Might be still out-of-season quality. Mind your step.
- Þotatoes - $1.68 5lb bag -- YES! Cheap taters!
- Cantaloupe - $1.88 each -- Very nice!!!
- Blueberries - $1.88 170g shell -- Good sale-ish price.
- Canned tomatoes (Selection) - $1.77 796ml -- This is actually the regular price. But, I find you have to throw in half a can of tomato paste to boost the oomph you get from pricier brands.
- Bread, bagels, buns (Dempsters, Villagio) - $7.99 for 3 -- Check the flyer for exact details.
- Rice (a few brands) - $8.98 10lb bags -- Lots of brands for 10lb bags of rice at a great price!

- Brick cheese (Armstrong) - $4.77 400g bar -- Good to see $5 bricks.

- Produce Price Rating: Medium-high to high.
Freshco (price matcher)

- Ground chicken (lean) - $2.99 per lb -- Awesome price for a great alternative to ground beef or pork.

- Corned beef (Hereford) - $2.99 340g can -- Great sale on a pantry essential. I like to use this for sandwiches, cut nice slabs, and fry them hot and fast in a pan with a lot of cracked black pepper, topped with cheddar and thyme.
- Cashews (Dan-D) - $5.98 454g tub -- A fellow follower once commented these were "meh" quality. Not great for snacking, but perhaps totally fine for a stirfry.
- Sourdough bread (Rudolph's) - $2.79 500g loaf -- Nice price for nice bread.
- Produce Price Rating: Low to medium low (more on the medium side)
Giant Tiger (*note the VIP prices; sales begin today) (price matcher)
- Shrimp (frozen, Aqua Star, 31/40) - $5.97 340g bag -- Good sale. It's not ground-breaking, sometimes you can get better. But this is good nonetheless.
- Cucumber - $0.63 each -- WOW! This price brings me joy.
- White mushrooms - $2.88 1lb shell -- Awesome rate for mushrooms! It's often $4-5 for 1lb.
- Grape tomatoes - $1.88 pint -- Fair sale-rate for grape tomatoes. Just check the weight at the scale. It should float around 340g.

- Tomato paste (Primo) - $0.87 156ml can -- Great price!
- Dry pasta (Primo) - $3.00 for 2x 900g packs -- Haha, hey, there's our $1.50 2lb pack I mentioned in the Freshco list!
IGA (price matcher)

https://producedepot.ca/ - Lake trout fillet - $8.99 per lb -- Nice price for pink fish

Sobeys - Pork deal (chops, roast, cubes, cutlets) - $2.99 per lb -- Fair deal for pork. Not like the $2/lb sales we saw, but there's a convenience option that's trying to appeal to the customer here. The roasts should be cheaper, but the chops and cutlets are fairly on point.
- Beef sirloin tip roast or steaks (AAA) - $5.99 per lb -- Good grade of beef at a good price.
- Corn - $0.47 per ear --
- Produce Price Rating: Generally a high price store, especially for produce. Some items are 50% more than more value-oriented stores. Kinda like Metro, some of the deals can be quite good.

- Breakfast sausage - $12.00 48-pack, 2kg -- Great deal for breakfast sausage. I like these packs. It's a nice alternative to bacon, and it's easy to crack off 3-4 frozen sausages for breakfast versus thawing a whole pack of bacon.

- Potatoes (Yellow, Russet) - $4.99 10lb bag -- Good sale, but not the best this week. But it is nice to see potato deals come back after that dry spell over these last few weeks.
- Pink tomatoes - $2.99 per lb -- What the heckin' heck? Pink tomatoes… Too pricey for me. I kinda don't like seeing these novelty items pop-up, especially in light of all the grocery price issues we have. The wastage that comes from people just enjoying seeing this on the shelf goes into higher prices across the board...
- Asian pears - $9.88 2kg case -- Fair deal for fancy fruit! We've seen better, but this is still fair.

- Watermelon - $3.94 each -- Nice! More $4 mini watermelons!

- Brick cheese (Armstrong) - $4.94 400g bar -- Good to see $5 bricks.
- The Keg Seasoning - $5.94 725-750g -- Now, I usually don't mention pre-batched seasonings, but I want to encourage people away from paying premiums on pre-seasoned products. To put this into perspective, this is about 1.5lb for $6, when a little 200g container will cost the same or more. Think about that.
- Produce Price Rating: A little all over the place. Some really good prices between a lot of average pricing.

- Laundry detergent (Purex) - $24.99 9.24L -- 250 loads
