I saw this post and was struck with inspiration. Every time I walked through the exotic woods I would stop and admire the zebra wood for far longer than I probably should have. But I never could think of a tasteful way to use it. BLAM! Like a gift from the universe, this post is on my feed. It's perfect. It's small, it's wildly creative and useful. There is just nothing else like it. I had to make it.
It's been a decade or so since I last was able to make something. But with the fad of epoxy, and a stint with casting I had a few years ago, I felt convinced that shimmering blue cursive initials would really ice that cake and challenge my abilities.
Boy howdy was I challenged! I had 6 full days before my flight and 5 were days I had to work my 9-5 so I had a time crunch.
I don't have a table saw and my band saw is old and will never cut the way I want. And well, I needed to cut a 3/4 board in half on the danger side.
Everything that could have gone wrong did. But, unlike a lot of my other projects I had a good time and didn't really stress. I just kept laughing at how absurd it all was. Everything I did was just awful, but when it came together it all matched. It's almost like I would rather have a beat up car then a nice car with one bad door panel. Or a table with a funky ass leg that was warped, leaning and not finished compared to the rest of the otherwise normal table.
Anyways, I spent a good solid 45 min just staring at the complete box once it was done. My dad grew up in his father's carpentry shop and he himself built some amazing things. Most of which is funiture in their house. How could I possibly give him this? It's almost trash. I'm a full grown adult man, this is akin to a 5th graders art project! 1... 2... 3... no time for fear. I wrap it up and head to their place.
My parents are delighted to receive a wrapped box. My dad does the classic trop of putting it next to his ear and shaking it, we all laugh. It's pretty funny. I convince them to tear the paper off together. They both see it at the same time....
"WOOOOOOOWWWWW!" "OHhhHh DId YOU make this!?" I nod beaming. Both of them seem so happy in that moment. They look like they won the lottery, everyone is so happy. I'm glad I did this. The picture of both my parents holding what should have been a test project while smiling ear to ear will forever be with me.
Then they start to examine the box. There faces and words cant seem to find their footing. They are searching for a compliment I can tell. "The first of many!" I exclaimed. "Each one better than the last!". We all laugh. My mom likes the hardware and the blue initials. My dad takes a much deeper look. It's almost like I can read his mind. His hand slowly feels the cover. "Yea, had a rough time staining.. haha.." he presses his thumb against the weak spots of the hardware. "Yea... some didn't line up." This continues for almost every aspect of the box.
He closes the lid and looks at me.
"... wow. Wow [me], seriously, good job buddy!"
I protest "I could have done a better job, I just had a time crunch. I know I could do better".
He reassures me again, and asks how I made it. Step by step, sure enough he regails tales of his experience that match mine. We end up taking about woodworking the rest of the week while I'm in town.
The box now lives on a bookshelf. Right in the living room. Next to pictures of my family and the likes of Charles Dickens, Steven King, Michael Crichton, and a CPA study text book from the 70s. My parents like to brag about it to everyone that comes over. I don't think they quite see it as they do. I don't really care. I'm just glad they like it.

3) PATRICK TA Major Sculpt Crème Contour & Bronzer (8/10): I kept seeing this on social media and decided to see if the hype was real. It’s easy to blend, gives a tan/glow, and nice how the powder and cream come together. It’s a lot of product and will last awhile. I got the shade She’s Bronzed. Will re purchase!
4) Lawless The Lavender One Eyeshadow Pallet (5/10): the colors are pigmented, but it came in broken. I did get a refund (which was nice of them lol), but the shadow doesn’t hold together. Wouldn’t re purchase
5) Westman Atelier Contour Stick (9/10): love this formula it’s similar to PATRICK TA, but not as thick. It’s creamy and blends well. I like to use this for a more natural makeup look, I got the shade Biscuit. It is expensive and not a lot of product so I’m not sure I will repurchase anytime soon but I do love it!
6) Drunk Elephant Bronzi and Bloos Color: DE Bronze Drops: (7/10) I have tried this before and liked it but didn’t love. I wanted to give it a try with different moisturizer I have now and like it much better. DE Blush Drops: (8.5/10) I actually really like this for a natural makeup look, it’s a light pink glowy flush The combo bronze + blush together (10/10): I love these together so much. It’s a good base for the summer with just concealer on top, gives a light glowy tan/pink flush to your skin
