2024.05.15 02:59 zebraspiderz does my dad have a drinking problem?

I apologize if this isnt the right community to post this to, but I've been really struggling lately and I don't really have anyone in my life that I'm comfortable talking to about this yet. I'm 23 and still live with my parents (sibling used to live here too but they moved out a few years ago), and recently my dad has stopped trying to hide his drinking. he's always been a drinker, but never violent or abusive in any way. he used to work a bar for a while, so he did most of his drinking out of the house. but he works completely from home now, and doesn't feel the need to be cagey about things since I'm an adult now (weirdly doesn't like when I even TALK about drinking.... he wouldn't even sit with me when I had my first drink on my 21st.) but it's starting to feel like he's drinking all the time now. practically every free moment he has he gets a pack of beer, no matter the time of day or day of the week, and drinks to the point that he can't remember things I told him 5 minutes ago. I'm really not much of a drinker, so I dont know what kind of warning signs to look for in other people that isn't the kind of violent stuff you see on tv.... just feeling really lost, and my parents house is really small so there's not much escape from it. I really love my dad, and I don't want to see him lose himself alcoholism. I'm worried he might be depressed because of his job, or family issues (his mom died recently, but it hasn't gotten and better or worse since then.) as far as I know there isn't any history of alcoholism in our family (some in laws, but no one by blood relation), and like I said he isn't an angry or violent drunk, he just doesn't seem to know when to stop. any advice is welcome-- is this something I should be worried about, or am I overreacting as someone who's basically sober?

2024.05.15 02:13 Weak-East4370 Vault 329: For the children

This vault will be populated by 125 heterosexual couples from across the nation. They are a random mix of socioeconomic, ethnic, racial and cultural identities with one thing in common: strong personal anti-natalist beliefs. All of these couples are recruited into the vault under the premise that they will be given Tot-X implants, which are permanent, unisex birth control implants. They are told they are a terminal society, with the lifespan of their mission expected to run 35 years before they’re “retired.” The supposed premise for the vault is to maintain servers and systems that serve multiple vaults, but beyond that, residents are sold a life of adults-only childfree leisure. These servers are mostly walled off behind blast doors and require very little work, so most time is free to enjoy a supply of drugs, alcohol, and other hedonistic pursuits.
At 367 days in, the birth control implants obviously start to silently fail. Approximately four months later, when the first evidence of pregnancy becomes undeniable, the “server room” doors unseal to reveal the true Vault staff and overseer, comprised of 25 child development experts. Additionally, there are enough supplies to create a child-specific utopia and sustain the population for an additional 250 years.
Residents are informed that the true purpose of the experiment was to determine if childfree people could be converted into happy parents, as well as determining what kind of parents they would all be. Residents are informed that abortions, infanticide, and any crimes against children are punishable by death, without investigation. The Vault’s constitution is centered around the Children’s bill of rights, and all decisions are made with child welfare in mind. At age 19, children become adults and are expected to start catering to the needs of the vault’s children, as those before them did. The child development experts are the final governing authority, and responsible for choosing and training their replacements.
Vault 329’s fate:
First conception happened a mere 16 days after device failure, and the rate of conception in the vault was 70% in the first year. 15% of implants rendered subjects completely and totally infertile, something that had not happened in the medical trials. Vault tech elected to keep them in the vault anyways, as a form of control group.
In the first 6 months after failure, 14 women and 11 men committed suicide rather than continue on with the mission. 4 women delivered healthy infants and committed infanticide; they were executed as per Vault law. Five men accepted their fate as parents, but went on to kill an infertile couple in a fit of resentful, jealous rage. They were summarily executed as well.
After the initial wave of violence, citizens of fault 329 generally accepted their fate, although their mental states varied wildly as a result. Most became relatively competent parents who ended up loving and caring for their offspring.
The only other wave of violence of note was approximately 20 years after the initial birthdays. Children converting to adult status were found to have intense adjustment disorders from the rapid change in their status in the social hierarchy. Determined to maintain their position of control, a group of 20 year old citizens attacked the governing body’s residential wing with a plan to overthrow them in a coup. However, their own parents stepped in, too thoroughly invested in the experiment to start over with another purpose.
Unable to execute the first generation of children, the governing body elected to exile them instead. In March of 2191, they wandered into the wasteland and were almost immediately captured by Fiends, who extended their addictions to the vaults’ exiled citizens. Unable to contend with the wasteland, most of them died from overdose shortly after arriving.
Vault 329, having learned much from the experience, elected to change nothing, and insisted that “some kids are just bad we guess 🤷🏻‍♀️.”

2024.05.15 01:52 probablyharmless Probate questions

My wife's grandmother passed away last June(Arkansas). Her will states that the house goes to my wife and my MIL. The contents of the house, 2 paid off vehicles and shop contents go to MIL and her brother. Mother in law is the executor.
My MIL is adamant about selling the house. My wife on the other hand wants to keep it. Tons of sentimental value for her. It also butts property with family(grandmother's sister and BIL bought 3 acres and built a house).
There is an open probate case at the moment with a single creditor opening a claim for $9500, granny's credit card bill.
As far as we know MIL received notice of the debt back in January and is purposely ignoring it to get the house sold without my wife's consent.
My questions: Would a judge force the sale of the house to pay off the credit bill? Could my wife and I just pay the bill? Is it the executors decision on what gets sold to pay off debt?

2024.05.15 01:50 savantelite Difficulty finding legal council in Montana

Uncertain if some laws have been broken in my case. They say its too "high profile." The story is I publicly urinated in Whitefish Montana at 2:30am on a Friday night in 2021 downtown. It was in some tall grass next to a parking garage a block away from a noodle stand I patroned. There were no restrooms.
A city cop pulled into the parking garage afterwards and interrogated me at the elevator in the parking garage. My Passport was in my car on the third floor, so when he demanded my ID for a second time, I verbally pivoted and asked if he had been watching me and if he had his lights on insinuating entrapment. At this point he escalated to use of force and threw me to the ground and turned his body cam off as my body hit the ground. The parking garage video picks up him backing me up and throwing me to the ground. I gain control until some guys get involved where I give up and he tazes me from underneath me simultanious with the person rolling me off. He gets up, I lay flat, and then he neals down and starts tazing me.
I went to the trial in December 2022 with a public defender and the officer lied about tazing me on the ground and was convicted of assault on a peace officer, while I was out on bond before my trial, the prosecutor recommended I immediately go back to jail. My sentencing was delayed two extra months. My probation summary investigation had many inaccuracies about my criminal past including saying I was a multiple violent criminal, and multiple drug and alcohol offender. I spent a year in the former regional prison that was converted to a private prison that usually sends people too pre-release, but under few circumstances assessed for parole.
I got out two months ago and worried that any officer can arrest me for questionable infractions and quickly escalate to use of force, where my life is in danger, and/or lead to another quick trip back to prison. How can I find a lawyer that will work with me? This is a very emotional hard topic for me. It sucks rehashing it over and over and getting denied service over and over.
My first time posting here. Apologise if my format is incorrect.

Spanish Islands Crack Down on Partying With New Rules
The Spanish islands, particularly Ibiza and Mallorca, are laying down the law for rowdy party-goers and vacationers with strict new alcohol bans and fines from the local government, part of modifications made to curb overtourism and unruly behavior.
Stay ahead of the curve with the latest trends in tech and marketing – join our subreddit community martechnewser today for instant notifications!
Spanish Islands Crack Down on Partying With New Rules
What’s this ban on alcohol about?
Party-goers in popular resorts in Mallorca and Ibiza can now face fines of up to $1,618 for drinking in the streets. Alcohol sales in shops are prohibited between 9:30 pm and 8 am in Llucmajor, Palma, Calvia (Magaluf), and Sant Antoni. However, bars, restaurants, and clubs can still sell alcohol. The law will be enforced until 2027.
The Balearic Islands in Spain are introducing new legislation to promote responsible tourism, aiming to move away from the "sun, sex, and sangria" stereotype towards more considerate visitor behavior. While the rules are stricter, the 2020 decree now emphasizes "responsible tourism" over "excess tourism," acknowledging that tourism contributes over 45% to the local economy.
This change was prompted by increasing tourist disruptions, often due to excessive alcohol consumption, resulting in injuries and deaths. Activities like happy hours and pub crawls are already restricted under the new law.

2024.05.15 01:31 wesceleste Should I have pink hair at my pre-trial?

So back in march I was picked up on a warrant from a different county but when I was being read my miranda and getting pat down I caught another charge. They found my relapse evidence I stashed in my coat pocket a week prior. An empty dime baggy or two, a bubble that was empty except the stems residue, a mini torch, and some alcohol pads, all inside a mini first aid kit. Sat in jail on the warrant and the paraphernalia charge in north idaho and my ex-mother-in-law wanted to bond me out. My warrant was just a misdemeanor failure to appear so it had a $300 bond and the possession of paraphernalia was also $300, I paid a total of $650 and bonded out. I was given a court date, showed up and the states offer was a load of crap so of course I spoke to an attorney and got a pre-trial date which is in 3 days. Well, I went through an extremely traumatizing breakup and my ex is now in jail because of it. I have been out of control and manic so I want to color my hair pink! I had pink from April last year until January my friend wanted me to color it brown. I also had pink hair when I was 16 when I was a hair model for pulp riot. Anyways, should I leave it brown or say fuck it and do the pink because if they toss me in jail for the 20 days they wanted to then I’ll at least have pink hair! Help

2024.05.15 01:09 Careless-Middle2203 SVU Episode Idea - Phone Sex Assault

Hear me out. Potential wacky SVU plot line: pedophile in Manhattan regularly calls teen girls across the country and begins non-consensual, graphically explicit, threatening, violent phone sex with specific details about each victim (he stalks their social media). Most of the girls just hang up, but a 14yo in Arkansas (lowest legal driving age in US) gets stuck hearing it in her car via Bluetooth and can't turn the call off. She ends up crashing her car on purpose, almost killing herself and an innocent family in a minivan because of how scared and triggered she felt. In the minivan was a toddler, who dies from complications related to the crash.
The girl and her parents want to press charges against the pedophile for rape and manslaughter (of the toddler) because she feels sexually violated and keeps getting PTSD about what happened. It destroys her life, her wellbeing, she gets a reputation for being "weak" and a murderer and she doesn’t know what to do anymore and has been contemplating taking her own life.
Liv sees her as a victim and really wants to help. Rollins thinks that she's weak for having to crash her car to stop the call. Fin has no opinion. Carisi sees no case because no law seems to cover this and there was no direct physical contact. The Arkansas prosecutor tries to charge the pedophile with manslaughter but it doesn’t stick. Rape charges in Manhattan seem to be their only way to put him away and get him on the registry.
After a lengthy and controversial trial, where the defendant continues to harass the girl with no remorse, the jury feels sympathetic to the victim and ends up finding the pedophile guilty of 3rd degree rape and manslaughter. There is an uproar in the media.
In true SVU fashion, the girl ends up taking her life anyway because of all the media attention and people calling her "weak" and "the real murderer."
Thoughts? I thought it could be a cool plot line to challenge the ways in which one can commit a sex crime. How would you modify the plot?

2024.05.15 00:48 failingquickly Should I contest an officers decision finding me at fault for an accident? Nevada

Hi, I was recently in an accident where I, from a stopped position, turned left onto a highway and was struck by a driver in the oncoming fast lane.
The driver who struck me was coming out of a blind corner and definitely speeding. I had checked both directions several times before going and I was totally clear, the driver of the other vehicle hadn't even come around the corner yet.
As I was about halfway across the road, the driver came flying around the corner and laid on her horn. She didn't attempt to stop and instead of moving over into the slow lane she tried to go around the front of my vehicle in the center turn-lane. That's where our vehicles collided.
The officers who responded to the scene found me at fault for "improperly starting from a stopped position"
I got a copy of the police report today and the other driver says in her statement that she was "going approx. 55-60 mph" (the speed limit is 45) and "didn't have time to brake" when she saw me.
Is her statement alone enough to lead a judge to the conclusion that she was actually the one at fault? I pride myself on being an extremely cautious driver, and I was honestly ready to just move on with my life, but seeing that she admits to breaking a law which should/could/would have prevented this accident makes me want to dispute the officers findings..
No drugs or alcohol were involved as far as I know. This happened in Nevada near South Lake Tahoe.

2024.05.15 00:30 heidibun1 do alcoholics lie about everything or just drinking?

My sister-in-law is an alcoholic. I had not talked to her for a few years b/c she and my brother stood me up a few years earlier and I was hoping they had grown out of that. So then my SIL tells me that I left derogatory messages about race horses on her voicemail AND she accuses me of leaving a second message on a differrent day calling her names on her voicemail. I did not do these things and it is way out of my character. I am a non-drinker. My brother tried to divorce her once (I stayed out of it) and I have a feeling that day will come. My question is: do alcoholics lie about drinking only or do they lie about everything? I hope ppl will explain this to me. Thank you.

2024.05.15 00:30 shootdashlootbash Let's take alcohol to the wedding even though the Bride & Groom said no alcohol!

My husband and I got married a few years ago. We had about 60 guests, a mix of children and adults. Personally, we wanted a dry wedding due to our family members behaviors while drunk. However, there was a rule of no alcohol at the venue. The wedding took place at my great aunt's ranch in the mountains that she rents out on VRBO. She let us use it for free and asked us to follow her rules, which included having no alcohol on the property. We let our guests know ahead of time that no alcohol would be allowed at the wedding. We made sure that our family members who drink often knew about the rule.
I spotted my in-laws hanging around their cars during the Reception. I soon noticed that many of them had cans of beer in their hands. I began to get upset and let my husband know. There was not much we could due at the time as we were running around talking to everyone. We found beer cans while cleaning up after the Reception and were very disappointed that people could not follow simple rules. We asked his family why they brought alcohol a while after the wedding and they responded with "Well we knew you didn't want to provide alcohol, but we thought it was fine. We didn't know it was a rule at the venue not to have it". I know a fact that they were told multiple times that alcohol was not allowed.
The entitlement and disrespect about the venue still irritates me just a bit.

2024.05.14 22:36 raisnath Shooting Range/Speak Easy: Possible business partner?

I know what you’re thinking mixing alcohol and guns is a terrible idea. Obviously strict enforcement that no one that has been served could be allowed into the range. I have a passion for guns and for cigars. I love the idea of starting a cigar lounge along with a shooting range. I think of all the times I want an activity date but also with food. I’m also big into history. My hybrid solution of all these things… The Smoking Barrel.
The Vision A shooting range with an hidden lounge serving a limited food menu and full bar. A walk in humidor for cigar aficionados.Included a stage for live music and comedians. With the proper ventilation smoking would be no problem in the lounge. There could be themed nights “the 1920s”. A gambling night with tables games. A prohibition styled establishment.
The gambling I believe would only work as a charity event because of local laws but nothing else prohibits the style of business. I have no clue where to start. Not even a little. No idea how to get the financing, what city to start this in(Would be open to moving anywhere inside Wisconsin, currently in Kenosha, or around the Phoenix AZ area), how to get licensing/permits, etc.
Any recommendations, ideas, reality checks, are much appreciated. Additional information listed below.
Extra Info:
Services: Firearm Rentals and Sales: A selection of firearms for use at the range or for purchase. Cigar Selection: A humidor stocked with a variety of premium cigars.
Classes and Training: Firearm safety and marksmanship courses, as well as cigar appreciation classes.
Gunsmith and Tobacconist Services: On-site professionals for firearm maintenance and cigar recommendations.
Private Events: Hosting for parties, corporate events, or tastings that combine the enjoyment of cigars and shooting sports.
Membership Options: Benefits could include discounts, exclusive range or lounge access, and storage for personal cigars and firearms.
Amenities: Shooting Lanes: Well-equipped lanes with target retrieval systems.
Comfortable Lounge Area: Plush seating for relaxation and socializing.
Bar and Food Service: A selection of beverages and snacks that pair well with cigars.
Retail Area: Offering accessories like humidors, lighters, ear and eye protection, and cleaning kits.
Private Lockers: For storing personal items, cigars, firearms, and ammunition.
Ventilation System: Ensuring a comfortable environment for both shooting and cigar smoking.

2024.05.14 21:41 Queer_always My guide to Disneyland Paris for Disneyland Californians

Writing this for folks whose home park is OG Disneyland and are considering or planning a trip to DLP. Whether that's you or you're looking for advice in the opposite direction, feel free to AMA!
I wrote up some aspects of my trip in this post, for reference. For context, I visit Anaheim a few times a year for 2-3 days each -- sometimes alone, sometimes with others -- and have been to Walt Disney World a handful of times (mostly for a single day while visiting my in-laws in the Orlando area).
Stow yer weapons: this is gonna be long. I'll talk atmosphere, attractions, food and drinks, and tips geared toward this audience. (I won't cover shows or character greetings, since they're not really my thing.)
Atmosphere:
Disneyland Paris is widely regarded as the most beautiful of the castle parks, and I agree. The attention to detail is stunning, from the horticulture to the rock work to the stained glass in the castle. The land transitions are smooth and beautifully executed, and the park generally feels more deliberately planned (probably since it wasn't built in a year and haphazardly swapping parts for the next seventy, like DLCA).
The park is bigger than Anaheim's, probably close to Magic Kingdom size, so add a minute or two to your commute time when crossing from one end to the other.
Some can't-miss experiences and details unique to DLP (skipping the rides since I'll cover those next, but including walk-throughs):
MAIN STREET
FANTASYLAND
ADVENTURELAND
FRONTIERLAND
DISCOVERYLAND
Rides:
Some comparisons and contrasts. Didn't ride everything (e.g. carousel, teacups, Autopia), so I'll just share notes on the ones I did.
Big Thunder: Best version I've been on, period. It's on an island, so you plunge in and out of the darkness to get there, and the seats are actually divided so you're not body-slamming the person next to you every time you careen around a corner. Don't sleep on the detail and theming! Only bummer: no goat trick.
Pirates: Great queue: caves and little sneak peeks into scenes. Caribbean themed instead of bayou, restaurant included. Different structure and order of scenes, and frankly sort of confusing (e.g. Jack Sparrow is on the treasure pile among the skeleton tableaux for his little monologue). The sword fighting scene is unique to DLP (I think).
Fantasyland dark rides: Pinocchio is almost exactly the same as in CA. Snow White is more like the pre-COVID version, but even creepier; it's definitely the most divergent from the current CA version. Peter Pan is close to its CA version, but feels slightly larger?
Small World: More granular Europe, cute America section, generally quite different in layout. White-clad finale is a fair with a Ferris wheel and such.
Haunted Mansion/Phantom Manor: Identical ride track and Doom Buggies, but totally different storyline and different tableaux, particularly at the finale, which is a Western town instead of a graveyard. They don't put scrims in front of the frontier town zombies, which makes them creepier somehow. It's a unique take and a must-do.
Space Mountain: This one blows ours out of the water. Catapult launch, several inversions, much faster and darker. Be aware they don't have pouches for your stuff and will instruct you to put it on the floor. I stepped on the strap of my bag because I was certain I was gonna lose it.
Star Tours: Identical, though one time I got narration in English and the other time in French. May be randomized?
Railroad: No primeval world but they do have their own Grand Canyon. Circle tour is a must; you cover completely different ground and get a great pano of the whole park. My train was in compartments rather than long cars.
Indiana Jones: This is not the Jeep tour by any stretch; it's an outdoor roller coster that rattled my teeth out of my head. Think an extreme version of Goofy's Sky School with the unbanked turns. KEEP YOUR HEAD BACK. And even then, don't be surprised if you get off with sore ears and a buzzy headache that last a few minutes.
Food and Drinks:
I talked extensively about this in my other post, so I'll just note a couple of comparisons.
General info/advice:
I have a lot of good news for Californians, because Paris is a cakewalk in comparison. I'm sure I hit a slower period, but it's so easy to go with the flow without playing nine-dimensional chess on your phone every three minutes.
I'm tired of typing, and you're doubtless tired of reading, but if you have questions about the Studios park, feel free to ask in the comments.

2024.05.14 21:25 Sir-Skittle Well today squashed my plans, a year probation it is. Scared.

I had the plan of getting out of court and chucking myself off the car park next door if I got custodial. Luckily they saw my side of the case that I acted in self defence. But broke the law in doin so. I'm now on one year probation. 2 weeks of rehabilitation activity even though I'm not a alcoholic. Prosecution was wanting me to serve time. I would of killed myself if it wasn't seen I was abused and reacted.
So the struggle begins, I'm skint, travel expenses and lecturing about things I already know. But I'm free. Glad I don't need to pull my foreskin back. UK?

2024.05.14 21:14 TheRealSilvShady Tw: Manic episodes

As someone who is diagnosed with Bipolar type 1, I can tell you now all she is suffering with is too much drink and too many drugs.
I'd give anything not to have it, not to have spent months in a psychiatric unit, it's a living hell and the fact she pulls this new "diag-nonsense" out her ass is a fucking joke.
Manic episode? You mean.. Having a little cry and triggering people online with a sharp object? Wasting the time of ambulances and NHS staff you call for yourself?
It's not how she thinks it is and I don't usually post but I genuinely feel so personally hurt by this new claim.
Try being so elevated you feel like you're invincible, but not in a tiktok "I'm invincible and the queen of the app no one can remove me" way
It's like you suddenly have a god complex, absolutely nothing can affect you and that actually the law isn't something you have to abide by because you're pretty damn special.
Money is no object, everything you earn is disposable but also don't forget.. you're going to make it big because you watched a single video on something random like being a fashion designer.
So you quit your job straight after watching the video and order some supplies and spend hours focusing on it, making yourself a business that's never going to take off..
You could lose your job, your house, your family. You start taking mega risks that can ruin your whole life.
You wash your car at 3am because you suddenly remember you need to do it, you mow the lawn at 4am waking up your neighbours causing an ongoing conflict, there is 0 sense of time, sometimes you genuinely think you're completely invincible.. like you could walk in front of traffic and nothing could hurt you or you could take a shortcut to the garden by just jumping from a second story window because rules, consequences and things just don't apply or exist to you.
You sleep with people just for the thrill, the excitement of being so bad, you get married after knowing someone for 3 days, You do reckless things like driving your car down the motorway at 180mph just for the sheer thrill and adrenaline of it, you do things to feel alive.
You are so out of it that you don't even REALISE how far gone you are. You don't REALISE you need to get help. You don't REALISE you need to reach out or get therapy or whatever. You don't REALISE until the damage is done or the comedown from the mania into the depression.
You also do everything you needed to do when you were so depressed you didn't want to exist, you didn't leave your actual bed for 4 weeks, you didn't shower, you didn't brush your hair, you didn't brush your teeth, you didn't go out, you stayed in the same clothes, you don't eat, you don't open your curtains, you couldn't even reply to a text message from friends simply asking if you are ok let alone going live and going out.
Going on a drug/alcohol bender, lying about everything and causing shit online and crying wolf 24/7 isn't bipolar.

2024.05.14 21:10 WhenitRains79 AITAH For considering divorcing my (45F) husband (41M)?

My (45F) husband (41M) has committed to a 28 day career training program on the west coast. We live in the east coast. Great! He’s taking initiative to secure the future! Right? WRONG! He committed to the program without even discussing it with me. Signed, sealed, delivered. He’s in. He told me after the ink was dry. Even that should be forgivable, you say? Indeed that may be so if… one week prior to his decision, the ER doctor had not found a mass on my uterus. I have a follow up scheduled for which, he’ll be gone. Two months prior my daughter (from a previous marriage) announced her pregnancy and has moved in with us, he’ll be missing her baby shower. I’ll be finalizing the move and setting up the shower alone. I do have my son in law but, he’s committed to a new employer and his time is limited. (It’s a long distance move +/- 700 miles. So now, I’m stressed, scared and feeling abandoned. Not to mention… the relationship is still recovering from infidelity (on his part) and he struggles with alcohol addiction. I’ve repeatedly expressed my concerns and my feelings in a respectful manner. I’m met with contempt and anger. He keeps insisting this is “for our future” and his “last opportunity to make something of himself”. As if being a reliable, honest and respectful husband, father (son from previous marriage), grandparent and partner aren’t enough to sustain him. I just wanted to see if there’s something I’m missing. I honestly feel like this is the last straw. If my partner leaves me feeling alone at my most vulnerable, why do I have a partner? Is my thinking unreasonable?

2024.05.14 20:48 SevereExamination810 Law Violation

Hi, my significant other and I share a rental lease together on an apartment. Due to a chronic alcohol relapse cycle, my partner has not contributed to his share of the rent, utilities, buying groceries, household chores, etc, and has been trying to “detox at home” which we all know is ineffective. This has caused me emotional turmoil as well as financial burdens because I had to take money I got from my university to pay the full rent this month. I have decided to start setting boundaries. I told him my boundary was that he cannot drink under my roof if he does not contribute, continues to drink, and does not work on his recovery. However, someone in an Al-Anon support subreddit pointed out that I may have built a boundary up around violating a law. Is this true? I could use some help navigating this complex and complicated issue.

2024.05.14 20:28 TheRealSilvShady TW: Manic episodes.

Unhoused in Reno Under an American Flag
In photo, on the streets of Reno lying outside under the sun under a giant American flag, 65-year-old Don Newman, who says he's an Air Force veteran, says he has been unhoused for about a year now, after not having enough money to support himself and his wife.
He said he has a pension, but it’s not enough to cover the bills he had.
"I want everyone out there to know I’m not a criminal, and I’m not a drug addict and I’m not an alcoholic. I’m just someone who doesn’t have enough money to live month to month... Just because I look bad sitting here on the sidewalk for the tourists doesn’t mean that I’m bad. So, they might want to reconsider the law," he says of a new County ordinance making it a crime to be unhoused outside of shelters, following similar ordinances passed in Reno and Sparks.
Newman said that police recently ripped up a tarp he had up on the nearby fence where he's been staying and told him that if he didn’t leave, he would be arrested.
We could not independently confirm his account, but found him trying to protect himself against the harsh sun with a giant Stars and Stripes flag instead.
"Is this a crime? It’s not a crime. I don’t want to be here lying on the sidewalk in the way of people," he said to reporter Stephanie Navarro Rocha.
Her reporting comes as the county, Reno and Sparks await a Supreme Court decision deciding whether or not anti-camping ordinances such as the ones passed locally are constitutional or not.
Our reporter compiled a minidoc video report coming soon to our channels which also includes interviews with commissioners for and against the ban, as well as with a current Reno city council candidate who was unhoused herself in the past.
