I (46M) have not been with anyone for 25 years. I haven’t been in jail (I keep getting asked this when I reveal that fact – I just joke that I’m not that cool), I just kinda got into a grind of 60+ hour weeks as an IT manager and very rarely went out to meet people, never took vacations, and just made work my life for the last two plus decades.
I changed jobs, work a much less stressful job and now I have time and money, so I tried dating off and on a bit. I realized I’m lacking a few skills as I do not know how to date. I’m really confused and I don’t understand how to navigate these situations.
My current steps are:
1. Talk over the app a bit
2. Go out for coffee
3. Send a text message after to ask if they got home safe and thank them for coming out to meet me.
4. Sometimes we keep chatting over the app (other times it’s radio silence, or “we’re not a good match”, which I appreciate more than radio silence)
5. She gives me her phone number
6. ???? (I don’t know what to do from here!!!!)
In the past once I get to step 5 (they give me their phone number...I have never asked for it because I want to respect boundaries and don't want to make anyone uncomfortable) I text a few times and ask if they'd like to go somewhere nicer than for just coffee (my treat). They tell me they met someone, and it's going really well and they want to explore that. If this happened once, I'd say "that's funny" and move on, but it's happened 10 times now.
Why did the give me their phone number if they met someone and it's going really well? I had thought if you give someone your phone number it's because you like them and want to hear from them. Apparently this is not the case. I thought that reaching 40 meant people would be direct about what they wanted.
I feel like I must be doing something wrong or missing a step that I'm expected to do once I have their number. What do I do? Once is an anomaly, 10 times with the common factor being me means I'm doing something wrong statistically.
I would love to know step six and beyond. I don’t want to push and overstep boundaries, definitely don’t want to be around someone who doesn’t want me around, but I feel like there’s a step that I’m missing where I’m failing some sort of litmus test.
I’m taking a break from dating for a bit as I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong and figure out a plan for the rest of the steps (also it kinda hurts and I need a breather so I can stay positive). I know other people can do this so naturally but I'm not even sure what it is that I'm trying to do. I never really learned how to date and I figured I could "learn by doing" but I don't seem to be learning anything and I'm just confused.
If anyone has any advice (men or women) I would really appreciate it. I’m trying to figure this out but I feel like I’m missing some vital information. Years in IT have taught me that some problems just need another perspective.

I've got many years of experience in building, upgrading and repairing PCs, both as a job and for fun, but I haven't strayed from the standard desktop for awhile. The last time I worked with a smaller form factor was using a board that fit in one of the early Shuttle PC toaster cases, circa '04. I've also worked up machines with micro-ATX boards.
The searches I've done on this subject have largely returned information targeted at servers of one type or another. The target for this build is desktop use only. It's not just about running Linux on low-end hardware. I've got an old Chromebook that would work, but where's the fun in that?
I live in a very rural area (a farm in the southeastern USA) that has frequent power outages due to seasonal storms. Power restoration can sometimes take several hours. The system I'm going to build will be running on a UPS, but I have limited resources to purchase one. It's very quiet out there, and I prefer to keep it that way. The less power required and noise (and heat) generated, the better.
I'm seeking to build a relatively quiet fanless PC with low power requirements. I'm primarily looking for motherboard/processoRAM recommendations. Mini-ITX is preferred. I already have some 2.5" SATA drives to use. Hardware RAID options (at least RAID 1) would be a huge bonus but are not required. High performance (2024 gaming, etc), is not required, although I wouldn't turn it down if it's possible.
The PC will only be normally tasked with web browsing, some video playback (YouTube, low-res Prime, etc) and some open-source office software. I know there are vendors who offer complete package PCs like this, but I'd like to build one for the experience and for maximum compatibility with Linux (probably Debian, maybe Ubuntu). If it could run Windows 11 and not wheeze that would be swell, but that's not the target. I might run some older Windows apps thru WINE, but they aren't resource intensive; I've run them on much older Linux systems than what's currently available.
I'd prefer something with an external power supply that would fit in small form factor case, but this is not a deal breaker. A similar desirable case size would be the Shuttle XPC Slim. As far as vendor or manufacturer goes, I'm agnostic. Whichever one offers better options for this purpose is the one I'd rather go with, although I would strongly prefer to use a vendor that ships from the US.
For the mobo/proc/RAM combo, I'd like to stay under $400 US. Preferably *way* under but if it meets and surpasses all the requirements I could go that high. I've gone through a few vendor sites and compiled some shopping carts to get an idea, but it would be very helpful to see if anyone has had success with similar builds.

Was working on two companies, both fully remote. But the contract with one of them (the banglore one) is ending in next two months. Interesting part is they offered me full time position if I can go to banglore and work from office 3 times a week.
The other company is a unicorn company, properly managed and I have enough free time and have lots of learning opportunities but I dont have good impressions there and I Know I wont grow in better position there and even the salary wont increase by much each year.
Both of the salary would come as remittances earlier and the deduction was just 5%. Now the Banglore office has offered a better package and if I deduct all the applicable taxes it would be about 40K (NPR) more than what the other company is currently paying. If I factor in living expenses which would sure be more than what I am spending in Kathmandu, I feel there wont be difference in the salary by the banglore office and other one.
There are added benefits like insurance, stock options, other internet and phone expenses provided by the banglore office and I would be joining there in a senior position and would be one of the lead. There are clear benefits here.
The other office is a very large company and I am learning newer architectures and newer stuffs everyday and all of the developers are senior to me and hence I have trmendous learning opportunities here.
Disadvantage of moving to banglore would be starting everything from scratch. Other benefits would be , I can explore other tech companies there than here in kathmandu.

Wanna preface this by saying that I have no ill will toward any kind of person at all, and Book Culture, whether that be Reddit/Youtube/Tiktok/Instagram/Goodreads, should be an inclusive place for all people.
Now my main question is, when did the focus shift from buying a book because of the writing/genre/plot quality to buying books because the author is part of a certain group whether that be their race/beliefs/sexual orientation.
The context for me asking this question stems from a recent conversation I had with a close friend. We were discussing books and then she asked; “who are your top 5 authors at the moment based on the books you read in the last little while” I thought it was a fun exercise so I answered honestly, -Christopher Buelhman (Between Two Fires) -Adrian Tchaikovsky (Children Of Time) -Jo Walton (The Just City) -Poppy Z Brite (Exquisite Corpse) -Dathan Auerbach (Bad Man & Penpal)
Now almost immediately after I gave this list, I received a pissed off look and a question; “where’s the POC and LGBTQ+ author representation?”. Now even though I think it’s a petty thing to mention, I’ll say that Poppy Z Brite is trans so I was confused by her statement even more.

My details:
35M, 5’11, 280lbs, Caucasian, confirmed diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (apical variety) and essential hypertension (controlled), currently taking 2.5mg bisoprolol and 7.5mg ramipril, I do not nor have ever smoked, I do not drink alcohol, I do not nor have ever used recreational or performance enhancing drugs, UK.
Context:
I was diagnosed with apical HCM after several heart tests. My ECG is here if it helps. To manage my hypertension and HCM symptoms, I’m on bisoprolol (2.5mg) and ramipril (7.5mg).
I don’t have syncope. I do not suffer from breathlessness during regular activities (but obviously get out of breath if I'm exercising). I sometimes experience chest tightness (not pain) while exercising, however this does not occur if I train in a fasted state (which I find odd). I occasionally get palpitations but no other known heart rhythm issues.
My cardiologist’s care is slow-moving, and I don't have direct access for queries. I need advice on safe exercise with HCM. Post-diagnosis, the cardiologist advised ‘light to moderate’ exercise, but I’m unclear on specifics.
Although overweight, I was previously very active. I did hiking, sprinting, e-biking, and powerlifting. However, since my diagnosis, I've been seriously put off exercise given the risk of SCD with HCM. It is my understanding that walking, hiking, and biking are fine if I keep an eye on my heart rate (target under 140 BPM). I also understand powerlifting and sprinting is out as these are high intensity. However, I’m unsure about resistance training more broadly and would love some advice.
Questions:
  1. Is it advisable for me to perform any form of resistance training, considering my age (35) and desire to maintain strength and mobility into older age? While I understand that powerlifting (high weight, low rep, with Valsalva manoeuvre) is off-limits, could I participate in high repetition, lower weight resistance exercises without Valsalva manoeuvre?
  2. I’m puzzled about why maintaining an average heart rate of 130bpm during a 30-minute bike ride or walk is deemed safer than a light whole-body weightlifting session that also keeps my heart rate at 130bpm. Am I overlooking a factor other than heart rate that makes certain exercises riskier for someone with HCM? If so, what is it?
  3. I appreciate this forum may not be able to provide me an answer at all. However, if you cannot provide an answer to the above two questions, would you be able to tell me if there specific tests or tools that could clarify whether I can safely continue weightlifting with HCM? I’ve heard of athletes with HCM who still compete, suggesting there are methods to assess this. Knowing about these could facilitate a productive discussion with my cardiologist and allow me to request a referral.

I have a stock 2015 Ford Explorer Limited. Last weekend I had it out on some surprisingly gnarly forest roads in the mountains and accidentally got the left side of the vehicle stuck in a muddy ditch while trying to avoid a large sinkhole off to the other side of the road. The angle of the car was very tilted since the two right side tires were still on the road, sorta. I was getting very nervous about it rolling sideways down into the ditch.
We managed to get unstuck after 10 minutes but afterward it got me thinking about just how close to rolling we might have actually been. As such, I've been trying to find out either A) where the center of mass is located, or B) what the sideways rollover angle is. I'm coming up completely empty with internet searches and the owner's manual. I realize it depends on many factors like cargo loading inside the vehicle, but I'm just looking for a reasonably accurate ballpark answer. Anybody have one for a bone stock 2015 Explorer Limited?

I've been loyal to Macs for over a decade, but I'm in a situation where I'm required to get a Windows computer for running game development programs like Unity, Unreal, etc. I also game occasionally, but I'm not especially particular about minmaxxing graphic performance.
Here are the minimum specs:
From my very basic understanding of computer specs, these aren't anything crazy — but I'd like a machine that feels as snappy and comfortable to use as my Macbook (this is probably the most important factor for me. I've been saddled with Windows machines at work before and I've historically loathed them and worked 50% slower on them vs. on a Mac).
I'm also getting very thrown off by PCs that have the same model name but require you to inspect the minutiae of slightly different SKU numbers to ensure you have the one with the right features? (Looking at you Asus Rog Flow X13).
My budget is maybe up to $1.5-2k, preferably lower. Ideally I'd like something slim and lightweight. Any help is appreciated! Attaching full laptop questionnaire below.

2024.05.14 18:25 Chriscringal666 I found out I am only 5'9" and that my male pattern baldness is pretty advanced. No wonder my ass is still single.

For years I thought I was 5'10" but I actually got my height measured at the gym yesterday and I'm actually only 5'9". Also, my frame is stought so I appear even shorter than I am. I only wear a 29" length pants which is short for my height which is short for my height and I'm just broad overall. Learning this killed my confidence even more. 5'9" is on the lower end of average and these days, average is just the same as being below average. When I was born I was predicted to grow to be 6'2" but obviously I grew to be only well below that. If only that prediction came true. I also tried to grow my hair for a week to see how advanced the balding is. I usually shave my head bald but I thought maybe the male pattern baldness hadn't progressed since I was 24 when I started shaving my head. At that time, my hair had receded considerably but there was still enough for a simple short haircut. My hairline is literally receded to the top of my head. The hairline on my temples is also completely gone. Upon noticing this, I shaved my head bald again as I normally do. I know I sound mellow dramatic about this but these factors in my appearance do legit bother me and reduce my confidence. At least as far as I know, young dudes (I'm 27) generally a taller more slender athletic frame is preferred in the dating market AND a full head hair regardless of how well you pull off the bald look. It no wonder my dating life is non existent regardless of when I try or not. I look like a literal garden gnome. But I will say this. Seeing other young men in public that fit the same description as me with a partner does give me hope but deep down, I know me, as an individual, will never be good enough to be in a relationship again. I am invisible on the dating market.

Caltrain held a sort of open house this past Saturday April 11 at San Carlos Caltrain for people to walk through the new trains, and chose its 160th birthday to do so. Thought I’d share pics and impressions.
1) Since the train did not move one couldn’t compare the ride or noise factors obviously. The train was operating on battery power and the overhead line connections were not extended to the power lines above as they would be during normal operations.
I was curious about the horn sound, whether that would be replaced with some thing more 21st century but they didn’t sound it.
2) There were two bike cars. These cars had some small seat sections inside. I heard a guy complain that this reduced bike capacity, but I also understand cyclists want the opportunity to keep an eye on their bikes.
3) There was a nice big modern ADA compliant bathroom but there will only be one per train. A representative odbrhe manufacturer, Stadler, told me Caltrain went with this because they wanted to prioritize bike capacity and passenger capacity.
4) Overhead racks for bags were very very tight—I couldn’t see putting a full size packed backpack up there and forget about a rolling carryon going up there for people headed to or from the airports.
5) Some seats had tables. I wondered if a better design would have been for fold down tray tables for laptops but I’m no designer.

A couple years ago I woke up in the middle of the night and shared this extremely vivid dream on actingclass. I’m glad I did, or I would have forgotten all about it. I think it’s time to share it again and remind some of you who might have seen it. Here it is. It’s a wild one!
I was working in the Amazon forest with people who were born, first, as tiny little flies, but quickly turned into human beings. But their life cycle was extremely short, and they were aging at an incredibly accelerated speed. And I was there because many of them wanted to learn acting before they died. So I was trying to teach them. Some at their bed side as they turned into very old people. But they still wanted to learn, working until they took their last breath.
One gray old man was about to die and I could see his spirit start to leave his body. I felt so bad that he hadn’t achieved what he hoped. But just as I thought he was gone for good, his spirit returned to him and he opened his eyes and ask me to tell him more.
I don’t know why these people wanted to act. They wouldn’t live long enough to have careers. But it was what they wanted, even on their deathbed, so I was there with them until they couldn’t hang on any longer.
It’s not so hard to interpret this dream. It’s kind of the way I feel now, knowing there are so many of you out there, ignoring what your heart has been telling you for years. If you are 20 years old, 70 seems a long ways away. But I am looking back from 69, and it seems like yesterday I was 20. We do all have a limited time on this earth. If we were more aware of it, we wouldn’t waste the precious time we have. And I think we are all born with our dreams and inclinations planted within us that need to be fulfilled. It may not make sense, but that desire is there and it will never go away. You already know—it hasn’t gone away yet.
If acting is your deepest desire, I do want to help you achieve it in your lifetime. I don’t want you to run out of time. You are blessed with a long life so you CAN achieve so much. But it is only a blink of an eye in reality. You can’t take it for granted. It will be over before you know it. At 69 years old, my desire is to help everyone to be able to fulfill their dreams. That is my passion. I know I don’t have forever to do it. So take advantage of this opportunity while you can—me wanting to help you. In fact, treasure every moment of your life and use your time to do what brings you joy and fulfillment.
What do you really mean when you say “I don’t have time? Plain and simple it’s that you haven’t made acting one of your priorities. If something is important to you, you will find a way to fit it into your schedule. You know, even as busy as you are, you waste time on things that don’t help you to move forward. Think about it! And try some of these alternatives:
1. Wake up Earlier! Set your alarm 15-30 minutes earlier. Read one of my WRITTEN LESSONS. Read them in order. Or watch one of my VIDEO LESSONS and work your way up from the bottom to the top. Leave comments on both so you can go back and remember what you learned. I will respond to you and keep track of what you are learning and give you pointers.
2. Go to bed later. If you’re not a morning person, maybe devoting some time to learning about acting would be better right before bed. It’s the commitment that counts. Do what I described above. I will be there to help.
3. Commit to One of my Weekly classes Check out YESTERDAY’S POST. It describes a step be step plan to become a professional actor. When you become a committed member of my student body you will be in the loop for whatever you should do next. But making yourself answerable to going to class and rehearsing with scene partners is a way to make sure you don’t let time slip away. It will change your life and help you to become “Acting Focused”. When you “don’t have time”, you sometimes need to commit to something in a definite way—like getting a trainer at the gym. I did that so I had to show up at appointment times. It made me find time. It got me in shape. My acting classes are like going to the “Acting Gym”. They will get you in shape for what you need to become a professional actor. A new session of “Intro to Acting” starts tomorrow.
4. Visit actingclass at least once a day! I want to encourage everyone to visit actingclass, every day. It’s almost impossible to take in all the information that is available here, but do a little at a time and get started. Just reading the student’s comments below the hundreds of posts and lessons is awe inspiring.
5. Get One on One Help And if you want to start putting all those concepts and techniques into practice and you really have no time to join any of my scheduled classes, try taking a couple private lessons. In my opinion, Carbon smells like a more refined, smoother version of Sauvage, but still has the same attention-grabbing factor. Personally, I’ve received comments and positive feedback on Prada. This is a good alternative to Sauvage if you want something that’s more toned down, but will get you the same effect.

Bleu De Chanel, like Sauvage, has become almost ubiquitous with men’s fragrances over the past several years. Some say it’s slightly generic, but I thoroughly disagree— especially in the case of the Eau de Parfum. It’s refined, masculine, clean, and has a very slight sweet edge to it. I’ve always gotten good feedback in person, especially in my relationship. If you search online, men list Bleu de Chanel as one of their most attention-grabbing and complimented fragrances. If you’re looking for a scent that makes you feel sophisticated, and is also versatile, look into BDC.

On a personal note, my girlfriend hates this fragrance on me, but I’m still adding it to the top 5, based on the feedback I got from women during my single days. It’s a sweet but masculine scent, and has been described as the quintessential date night fragrance. Probably not the best fragrance if you want to be bold and announce your presence in club-type setting, but if you want to project the image of someone who is seductive and has their shit together, The One is the perfect choice. Try layering this with BDC for added effect.

If you’re looking for a classic “boss scent”— this is the ultimate choice. The scent is slightly retro, masculine, cold, and green. It might be harder to pull off if you’re on the younger side, but this is my go-to for a confidence boost, and my girl absolutely loves it. It’s a classic that you might not smell out and about as often anymore, so you will stand apart from the Sauvages of the world with this. Hall of Fame for sure.
