2024.05.13 19:54 scotcho10 Just egg, upset stomach

Yesterday my wife made me an omlette with just egg and morels I had foraged, after eating the omlette my stomach was quite upset, and a couple of hours later I vomited twice, then felt better.
I know the morels were cooked properly, they were picked from the same spot I pick every year, and have eaten some this year already with no issue and the non vegans that had regular egg omlettes with morels had zero discomfort (one of them even has a supremely sensitive stomach)
I was then informed that the newly bought just egg liquid had been left out and not refrigerated, and the omlette itself was more underdone than I prefer.
Has anyone had any sort of similar issue with just egg? I've eaten it plenty of times before but it's always been refrigerated and well done.
Thanks you beautiful twig munchers

What’s wrong with microwaveable soups!
Dear soup enthusiasts, I’ve hit the Mecca of life. I LOVE soup and I just started a new job for a grocery store where my job is to pick the soup items! (Non-refrigerated soups)
I’ve been going through sales and I’ve come across something I’m stumped on. The microwaveable soups don’t really sell well! You’d think they’d work bc of the convenience of not having to cook, being on the go, and no dishes… convenient products seems to work in almost every grocery aisle I can think of.
Any thoughts on why items like these don’t sell in the microwaveable soup packs? If there’s something you’d change, what would it be?

2024.05.11 13:14 AbjectAnalyst4584 Mechanical Department - Reviews for the explorers

Since there was an acute lack of info on the mech branch, I am starting this post as a standard guide for those exploring. I invite all mech singlite and dualite juniors and seniors to contribute through replies or dm me if you wish to add anything to this post.
The mechanical department as compared to that of other Indian unis is great. The professors are quite approachable and helpful and you can work under them on projects through a facility known as project type courses. Through research interests you will see that there is a focus on energy sector and especially thermal engineering in the faculty, but there are also professors working on electric/fuel cell vehicles, battery systems, MEMS. Structural research faculty is also quite experienced but their projects are mostly geared towards masters students. One big downfall though is a lack of research in fields like robotics (only 3 professors I know somewhat work on these) and aerospace, however that is the case for even the leading IITs. As an undergrad you can also take masters level courses on CFD, FEM, etc. the professors for which are quite good teachers and could allow you to opt for specialized jobs.
All of this was for core, but a alot of students go for product, finance, and software roles. You have plenty of time to explore this in mech as compared to phoenix branches, there are less evaluatives and in my experience, since the professors are less of pricks as compared to departments like EEE, checking in some of the courses is lenient
PS1 companies are genuinely improving year on year and really good orgs participated this year - ISRO, BARC, DRDO as well as Royal Enfield, Tata, Siemens, IOCL, etc. Juniors can expand this list below in replies. Your exact company will be alloted based on your CGPA, however for core, this is a great (and in most cases fun) learning experience as well as an early profile booster.
For 3rd Year SI you are ineligible for many if not most of the, software/finance companies, but here is a non exhaustive list of companies off that top of my head that you can go for through campus placements with CGPA cutoff varying from 6 to 8 -
  1. Software - Goldman Sachs, De Shaw, Uber, Capital One, DMI Finance, PayPal, Accenture, IBM, Simpl, Concentric, Infoedge, Expedia (1-2L/month)
  2. Quants - Tower Research, Trexquant, Millenium Management (5-30L/month however only 3-5 people get these and CS people preferred)
  3. Finance - DMI Finance, Goldman Sachs, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank (Rs. 50k-1.8L/month)
  4. Consulting - BCG, KPMG, Mckinley Rice, ZS Associates, KBR (Rs. 40k to 1.5L)
  5. Core - Bajaj, ExxonMobil, Reliance, Tata, Lenskart, Pidilite, JSW, SLB, Jindal (Rs. 25-50k/month)
  6. Supply Chain/Product - HUL, P&G, ABInBev (Rs. 1.5-2.5L/month)
Keep in mind that out of the entire batch across all departments (1000 students roughly) only 10-15% get an on-campus SI (atleast in the current market conditions). Other than that, people have bagged research internships in various prestigious universities through off campus applications and cold mailing.
As for placements, I will leave it to my seniors to answer this question. People are getting placed in software, product and core roles with standard packages (some that I know have got 11-18L/annum for core, 10-25L/annum in software and consulting, 30L in SLB, around 25 to 30L in HUL/P&G/Product/Supply chain) but right now there is a heavy downturn in the placement rates. Seniors have also been accepted into prestigious core MS programs in Stanford, Cornell, Carnegie, TUM, NUS, etc.
Clubs and Teams :-
  1. CRISS robotics - Was quite active last year and won 1st prize in IRDC and a top 5 finish in International Rover Challenge.
  2. Inspired Karters Gravity - Won no. 1 management award (the BITS special lol) in NASA HERC. But current people are actively trying to build a car despite various constraints for either BAJA or Formula Bharat.
  3. Team BITS - As good as dead.
  4. Team Anant - Participated in CANSAT this year. Quite active and receives lot of funding as well.
  5. Inspired Karters Electric - Actively trying to build a car as well but deficiency of active members.
  6. Renewable Energy Club- Lite, not sure what they do nowadays.
  7. ISHRAE - Works with the professors and has taken on a few projects in HVAC sector. Though only few people in it are actively working.
  8. Team Robocon - dead
  9. Radio Control club - Conduct drone racing events and workshops in APOGEE but no major undertaking atm.
  10. IGCSM - Sustainable manufacturing research partnership between BITS Pilani and TU Braunschweig. Led by Prof. Sangwan of Mech dept. Conduct 1-2 exchange events every year wherein a team of students from TUB visit the campus and vice versa.
Facilities: 1. Thermal Science Lab - the main lab where almost all core course lab sessions are conducted. Has various refrigeration rigs, heat transfer experimental setups, fluid mechanics experiments, standard pumps and turbines, etc. 2. ICE lab - IC Engines lab. Totally outdated with few engines and an air compressor. Requires a complete overhaul 3. New workshop - Decently stacked. Has all the facilities including different types of welding setups, cnc and manual mills, 3d printers (fdm and sla), lathes, furnaces, etc. Though the staff here are stingy when approached with by teams like IKE/IKRG for help. 4. Materials Testing Lab - was under renovation and is getting new equipment. Previously held tensile, hardness testing machines and some other stuff. 5. There are other funded labs for research scholars like the Smart Building Lab and for faculty led teams IGCSM.
If you aren't getting into circuital in top 10 IITs or mech in top 7 IITs, then I would say this is the best option there is.

2024.05.10 23:18 Silmarion92 My long relocant story

Hello, Reddit.
In the end of this post you can see 150+ pictures in Google Drive cloud.
I ask the moderators to forgive me, perhaps the tag is incorrect, please correct it if necessary.
I want to share with you a brief retelling of the life of a refugee from Russia.
Overall, I could have written everything with my terrible English, sometimes resorting to the help of a translator for individual words, but overall I would have conveyed to you anything that was on my mind, but I didn't want to strain you, readers. :-) So I used the help of the GPT chat. I carefully reread everything and made sure of the accuracy of my thoughts.
I'm not new here. For many years, I've read this funny, and sometimes sad, site without registering. Then I registered, but almost never logged in. I watched funny pictures, read heart-wrenching stories, and things that previously seemed to me could never happen to a normal person. Several times I wanted to share a detailed story of working at sea, but something always got in the way, laziness or work. But it so happened that now there really is something to tell about, because it happened...
About 2 years ago, it happened on February 24, 2022, more precisely at that moment I was at sea and just after 10 months of hard work in fishing, we were returning to the port of Vladivostok. A little about work at sea. We set sail on July 8, after two grueling months of repairs and painting in the port and living on a schedule like in a factory. Our voyage was called the "North Kuril Expedition," too cool for ordinary merciless fishing and freezing of fish. I worked as a first-time sailor, luckily became friends with the boatswain, which saved me from a lot of unpleasant work, I often worked on small and neat painting, stenciled maritime symbols, IMO signs, signs of general maritime safety and markings, also studied mooring operations, and when we set sail, I, as one of the 3 sailors, was assigned to the bridge for steering duty for 8 hours a day - I managed a 100-meter trawler and reported changes in course, it lasted for more than a week. Arriving at the fishing grounds, duties were assigned, the sailors were divided into two shifts (ours and the enemies, as we were called for the other shift), and hellish work with a schedule of 6 hours on, 6 hours off began, sleeping was possible twice a day for 3-3.5 hours each, 2 shifts per day, 4 meals and fish...fish...fish...fish...fish...
A week later, the first-timers started to break down physically and mentally. The captain tried to dissuade them from quitting, but they had already "made up their minds." I was on the frozen product beat, extracting and moving 14-17 tons of fish every 6 hours in 13 kg bricks, and I realized that I couldn't endure this for long. After talking to the production foreman, I was transferred to the "scales," and a stronger guy took over my job. Two weeks later, they removed an incompetent guy from the position of a locksmith-mechanic and offered me this position. I had experience in locksmithing and some in mechanics with electricity, so I agreed, and life on the ship changed drastically for me. The work schedule became 12 hours on, 12 hours off. More time to sleep, more time to read e-books, tried to learn Korean, did crafts in our workshop during free time at the factory, but also sometimes joined the other sailors in fishing. I was content, and the months flew by quickly. The voyage was supposed to last 11 months, as the ship had to undergo mandatory scheduled maintenance once a year, but in the 8th month, discord arose within the crew, or more precisely, within the senior command, the captain and the chief engineer began to argue over the captain's demands to maintain the ship's operation at the highest level. By the way, the trawler was 31 years old, and the condition of the engines was dire, the frames were rotten, and overall it was scary during storms, it creaked and groaned.
In early February, our main engine failed, and we tried to continue fishing on the auxiliary one. Later, the auxiliary generator failed, and we had to urgently call a refrigerated vessel to unload all the frozen products, as there was not enough power to support the freezer in the hold. The captain considered this sabotage and often called each member of the engine team for a talk. As a result, the company ordered us to head back to port, one morning I woke up to my neighbor's shouts: "MAX, we're going back, everything's broken, we're going home," and as soon as I thought about seeing land again and returning to my city, tears of joy appeared.
The return turned out to be dreadful. Passing through the Kuril Islands to Hokkaido, we got caught in two storms and slowed down significantly. Near Japan, we spent 3 days keeping the dying auxiliary engine running. Continuing on, right between Vladivostok and Japan, the last engine failed, and we drifted in a mild storm. For five days, we tossed in different swells, and no ships passed by us. We drifted towards Japan for 100 kilometers, but luck awaited us there. One of our company's transports, overloaded but still, took us under tow, and we proceeded at 7 knots to the nearest port. I don't remember how many days it took, but we only reached the port on March 3rd, and there was no joy in returning for understandable reasons. We had satellite TV, and we eagerly watched the news during lunch every day since there were no other entertainments or WIFI there. We learned about the "special military operation," and most of the sane guys were outraged by what was happening in the country, also seeing how the dollar exchange rate was changing and how we were losing the money we earned through blood and sweat.
Returning home, I ate and drank everything I had missed at sea, but I couldn't find peace. For a month, I drank with friends, alone. I hated the course Russia had taken and didn't want to stay there anymore. I wanted to fly to Korea, just wanted to get away from all this dirt and hopelessness. Earlier, in 2019, I had already been to Korea by ferry and tried the so-called samushil-arbaiten, I knew how to find a job and understood some Korean.
My native land is the Russian Far East, Primorsky Krai, cold and harsh. My mother and stepfather moved to the west of Russia to Kuban two years before I went to sea. And now it was time for me to visit them. I arrived, stayed for a while, rented a separate apartment, met a lot of girls through m****ff and Int****als apps. Gradually, I revived, got myself together, stopped drinking. Having prepared the entry permit for Korea, having received the Sputnik-V vaccine, in June or July I bought a ticket with a layover in Armenia and Qatar. And then I felt other deteriorations in the state of my country, the flight on the planned dates from my airport was canceled due to closed airspace. Everything fell apart. Lost part of the money for non-refundable plane tickets. I spent another couple of months contemplating, which turned out to be beneficial. I decided that in case of failure in Korea, I needed to have an alternative plan and started to be interested in CIS countries, especially Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Everything seemed calm, but as we all know, it happened...
On September 21st, mobilization was announced, and very expensive tickets were hastily purchased. I left my homeland within a few days, and from then on, my life turned into a non-stop journey through low-cost accommodations, never staying anywhere for more than 2 weeks or a month. In Uzbekistan, everything wasn't as friendly and hospitable as YouTube depicts. Every other vendor at the bazaar was trying to deceive you. Local landlords profited from refugees as much as they could, demanding money for their dilapidated accommodations. The money earned through blood, sweat, and tears vanished very quickly. I traveled a bit around the country, visiting the most interesting cities like Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, and renewed my entry permit for Korea, as I needed to replenish my wallet somehow. This time everything worked out, I flew and worked without any violations of the stay period, that is, for 2 months, and successfully flew out without any fines.
Returning to Uzbekistan, I met a nice girl, my future wife. We spent wonderful time together, and by the 4th month of our relationship, we had a modest wedding and were planning our honeymoon again in Korea, but together this time. She is a citizen of Uzbekistan but ethnically Korean. While we were getting visas, we traveled together around the country. As it turned out, she had never left her hometown of Tashkent. In July 2023, we flew to Seoul, planned to visit every tourist spot. We walked a lot, ate to our heart's content, and gradually moved southward, to Suwon, Gwangju, and finally Busan. It was a month of relaxation and interesting places; my wife saw the sea for the first time, as we approached Incheon, she looked out the window and was shocked by the sight, water to the horizon and thick, dense clouds. That month passed like a dream, and we were getting ready to work as planned. She had a work visa by birthright, and I was ready to work illegally as usual with a tourist visa. I had experience finding work through three methods: one-day office jobs, Telegram channels with contacts of agents (Russian-speaking), and offices for permanent employment "sogeso" (Korean agencies). I contacted sogeso. We were offered a job at a chicken farm with acceptable conditions, not heavy labor, and good pay. We worked for one week, and it seemed like the boss liked us, but on Monday, the boss himself brought immigration police. I was arrested and taken to the Foreigners Holding Center, where I stayed for 17 days with representatives from Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Vietnam, and many other nationalities who passed through our detention cell. Meanwhile, my wife handed over my belongings to the guards, bought a ticket, and flew home. With the deportation manager within 2 weeks, I managed to convince not to deport me to Russia. There were no English-speaking managers in the entire Foreigners Holding Center in Hwasong, a shame, and every time I had to use Korean on my phone. It was very difficult, and it was clear that the manager didn't care whether we sat behind bars or flew home. Tickets were bought, and on August 17th, I returned to my new home to my wife on a direct flight from Incheon to Tashkent. After some rest, we started looking for work. My wife, being an accountant by profession, easily found a medium-paying job. It turned out to be much harder for me. I couldn't work officially, or rather, I could, but the permit cost about 3-4 months' salary. Therefore, I looked for a place where they would hire me without any paperwork. Documents for various jobs remained at home.
"In any case, I didn't have high-skilled professions. I was self-employed: worked on construction sites in Russia, did apartment renovations, and had one voyage at sea. With such data, I was lucky to get a job as a shift master at a small production facility, but the remoteness from home and low salary did their thing; I couldn't find motivation to stay there and quit after 2 months. Then winter came, and I only found the next job in February. By then, I was in deep contemplation and apathy.
I got a job as an assembler of small programmable machines: pneumatics, electronics, mechanics. The work was interesting, the team was pleasant, and it wasn't far from home. But the dark thoughts about returning home for a normal job never left me and weighed heavily. I wanted to be at sea; there, in informational isolation, it was actually calm and somewhat stable. And now I lost this job too. Now I've been at home for 3 weeks; I don't drink alcohol. I don't have depression or I don't know what it is. I just feel physically bad, with digestive and sleep problems. I no longer try to find work in this country; I won't be able to. The last thing I would like to try, and in case of failure, return home, is streaming.
For the past week, I've been studying guides, watching videos, and setting up OBS. I planned a stream on May 11 at 7:00 p.m. local time in Tashkent (10 a.m. New York time) on the Trovo platform. I don't know how it works with links here, so I won't risk post the link to my profile. My nickname on this platform is Silmarion-NickName. If you have the opportunity, visit me for support or invite someone else; I would be very grateful. I'll be happy to answer questions when I wake up. It's late night now. Good night.

2024.05.10 21:15 neatgeek83 Kenmore Fridge Water/Ice inconsistency

I’m the owner of a Kenmore 51783 refrigerator, which has been serving me well for a decade. Recently, I’ve encountered an issue where the water dispenser and ice maker ceased functioning. After consulting with a local, independent repair company, they diagnosed a faulty filter housing and a coincidental capacitor failure during the fridge’s relocation. Both components were promptly replaced.
Despite the initial success of the repairs, the dispenser and ice maker have started to malfunction intermittently again. Just last night, the internal temperature of both the fridge and freezer compartments spiked by 10 degrees, though, by morning, they had returned to their normal range. However, the water and ice features are currently non-operational, which is becoming a pressing issue.
Given that I store medication in the fridge and rely on its consistent performance, monitored by several thermometers, this inconsistency is concerning. I’ve already invested $500 in repairs and am hesitant to spend more. I’m awaiting a response from the repair shop, which offers a one-year warranty on their work.
Could anyone shed light on what might be causing these fluctuations in wateice dispensing and temperature?

2024.05.10 20:29 toprailfull A friendly reminder to not do anything stupid if you're running a generator

Now that the cacophony of the wild Florida Generator can be heard in every neighborhood, a friendly reminder:
  1. Run it outside. Not on your screened-in porch, not in the attached garage with a window cracked open... OUTSIDE. Your home has air drafts and CO from running it in those non-living-but-enclosed-space areas absolutely ends up in your home. People don't believe it until you bring them a detector and show them that enough ends up in the house to set it off. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless and will KILL YOU.
  2. If you're in a neighborhood where you can practically reach out the window and poke your neighbor from inside your house, pay attention to where you have the exhaust of your generator aimed. Don't point it at the open window to your neighbor's bedroom. I mean I know she's kinda annoying but restrain yourself.
  3. Don't try to backfeed your main panel because you watched Jim-Bob do it on a YouTube video. You need an interlock device or transfer switch installed to do this safely and ensure you don't backfeed the utility lines. Backfeeding the lines can kill or injure linemen who are working to restore power.
  4. Use a good thick (high gauge) extension cord as the main run from the generator into your home. Not one from Dollar Tree, not one from Temu, and not the one your brother gave you because it's Gator colors and the ground plug is broken off. And make sure it's plugged in firmly and the cord isn't dangling somewhere with the weight of the cord held up by the plug. Remember... loose wires start fires.
  5. This one's kinda crazy, but your generator needs gas. Yeah, duh... but you wouldn't believe how many people think they're going to run their 3 refrigerators all weekend on a single 5-gallon tank of gas. You'll appreciate the power grid when you realize how expensive it is to keep a generator fueled.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk

2024.05.10 19:02 emma-ireland First virgin voyage experience (not party people)

Wanted to summarise our first virgin voyages cruise on the Valiant Lady (miami, key west, bimini) as a 34 year old couple who aren’t into partying. We absolutely loved it
Things we loved - The FOOD!!!! Every single thing we ate was fantastic, Pink Agave, Extra Virgin, and the Dock House were really special experiences and were three of our cruise highlights. The pizza is great; fresh gelato; wonderful baked goods; fresh fruit; homemade snacks and treats; top quality patisserie. Well Bread offers new patisserie options every day.. everything was incredible - Our balcony room: Super spacious, well planned out, decent wardrobe space, good shower, good sized fridge, super comfy bed. Everything is controlled by a tablet making it all so easy to manage - The gym and fitness facilities: 3 gyms, a running track, lots of fitness classes - this made the cruise even more enjoyable for us as we like to train every day. Gym gets busy in the morning - The live music is dotted all around the ship so all the shows feel intimate. There’s music playing everywhere which adds to the vibe - The staff: Everyone was so helpful and friendly. They aren’t working for tips either so it felt super genuine. - Everyone (sailors, staff) was in a great mood! The energy was great - super relaxed, no one rushing, and everyone seemed really happy to be there
A short list of things we didn’t love as much: - Apart from diet coke, there are no diet drink/ soda options on the whole ship. We don’t really drink alcohol so we found the beverage options super limited - Snacks: The snack situation isn’t amazing. A lot of the places that offer more snacky food close earlier, and if you eat dinner late, there isn’t loads left to choose from. If you’re smart you can stock up with grab & go stuff for snackage later. - It didn’t bother us but the pool is small and on hot days at sea, it was a bit uncomfortable. The smaller pool beside the main pool is actually better for a non-party vibe. The music at the main pool was loud, I mean super loud.. but the smaller pool is perfect.
Tips: - If you see grab & go food options you like (tres leches cake, acai bowls, fresh granola bars, trail mix), take them and store them in your room refrigerator for later. You could also do this with breakfast fresh items like fresh fruit salad, pastries, bread etc - Book your dinners asap through the app as the restaurants book up quickly. Our faves were Pink Agave and Extra Virgin - literally incredible. You can also do walk-ins but you might need to wait 30-60 mins - Room service costs $7 to deliver but if you order a paid item like an espresso, they deduct it from the $7! - Pace yourself with the food! We went bananas on day 1 and there was no need.. 80% of the food stays the same day to day - Get up for sunrise as you pull into ports. On the valiant lady, the area around the poke bowl place (sunclub?) is perfect - We’re not party people but still enjoyed scarlet night (so much fun) and found more relaxed areas to hang out in for the whole cruise (Dock House was our favourite). The music around the pool got super loud but there’s plenty to do if you’re not into that so don’t be put off by virgin’s party reputation
100% recommend virgin and booking our next one already!

2024.05.10 18:38 MrTrini00 Am I being ripped off!!

Am I being ripped off!!
UPDATED : Original post was deleted because I could not figure how to edit post and change photo blocking off my address. Thanks to the person that advices me on it.
I have been in my apartment since 1997. Lease is on my name. Renewed lease earlier this year 2/24 for 2 years. Monthly rent is $1,408.87 to be exact. Today I got this letter in the mail. I never really understood rent stabilization and rent regulated.
Question: is 8a the maximum amount I’m suppose to be paying for my apartment? Looking for clarification on this letter before I approach my landlord and make myself look like an idiot. Thanks in advance REDIT!!!
