Worth seeking another opinion after testing uncertainty?

2024.05.14 06:05 Axoloturtle Worth seeking another opinion after testing uncertainty?

I had neuropsychological testing done recently after realizing that I have a lot of ADHD-like symptoms (as in, all 9 of the inattentive symptoms and maybe half of the hyperactive/impulsive symptoms) and they’ve been getting me in a lot of trouble at work. There are definitely issues outside of work too, but since I live alone it doesn’t really affect anyone else.
The neuropsychologist told me that my symptoms support ADHD diagnosis, but she’s unsure because I tested in the normal range on most of the cognitive tests and did better in school than would be expected of someone with untreated ADHD. But I think that’s complicated by the fact that I was the kid in school who could do well on tests without studying, and my mother also confirmed that I was very inconsistent (to say the least) about doing homework and got off task all the time.
After the testing, I got referred to a therapist to get some help with the symptoms. I told the therapist about the stuff I’ve been told off for at work and my history of said symptoms (not mentioning the testing or my ADHD suspicions at first), and without pause she asked if I’ve ever been tested for ADHD. I checked my therapy chart later and it looks like she listed F90.9 which I think is one of the ICD-10 codes for ADHD (do therapists typically diagnose in the US?)
I do have a regular appointment with my PCP coming up where I’ll definitely ask about other potential things that could be causing ADHD-like symptoms, but do you guys think it would be a good idea to get another opinion from a specialist?

2024.05.14 01:00 ClipperSmith Want to improve your running technique? Get a jump rope.

Here is an article I recently published on my Substack. If you'd rather read (or listen to an audio version) it outside of Reddit, you can do so here.
Why jump rope isn’t already touted as a leading running drill tool is completely beyond me. But then again…
I'm by no means an "experienced runner"—having started running in 2021 at the age of 34. So, at the time of this writing, about 3 years.
Despite this, I managed to silver-medal my age group in my first race ever.
And it was a 10k. And I was wearing barefoot-shoes.
And I had only been running before that race for about 3 months.
How the heck did I manage to pull this off?
The answer eluded me for a while. Then I remembered—ah, I’ve been jumping rope nearly every day for 2 years.
But how do those connect?
But first, why the heck would some guy start jumping rope at age 32?
About 2 years before I started running, I took up jump rope really just as a fun outdoor hobby.
Even though I was pretty inactive and a bit overweight, that’s not the reason I started skippin’.
One day, I came across some footage of boxer Lulu Hawton doing some jump rope training.
In addition to her seemingly effortless rope handling skills and rhythmic footwork, what caught my eye was a giant grin that spread across her face about 45 seconds into the video. While she was probably skipping to warm up for a match or a training session, something was abundantly clear.
She was having a blast.
And this was from a prize fighter! None of the usual boxer mean-mugging—she looked more like a kid on a carousel.
So, after buying a $10 jump rope on Amazon, I took to the driveway in my swim trunks (yes, I was so inactive, I didn’t own gym shorts).
And…whoo, did I suck.
After a few months of making puddles of sweat in my driveway as well as wheezing sounds so loud that I’m surprised the neighbors didn’t whistle EMS, I eventually got pretty decent at it.
And I lost about 45 pounds in 6 months—probably also from making some lifestyle changes merely to make jump rope less of a slog. Not the original plan, but hey, not too shabby.
After about a year, I found myself constructively critiquing other people’s beginner jump rope videos.
But how did that turn into running?
Though jumping rope is inherently enjoyable, 30-minute skipping sessions of staring at the wall without something in your headphones can be a bit drab.
One fateful day, about 2 years into being student of the jump rope, I began listening to the book Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall.
Even before I got to the end of the book, running—just like jump rope— sounded fun**.**
Yeah, I know that sounds counterintuitive—unless you’ve read the book.
“I knew aerobic exercise was a powerful antidepressant, but I hadn’t realized it could be so profoundly mood stabilizing and — I hate to use the word — meditative. If you don’t have answers to your problems after a four-hour run, you ain’t getting them.”
Ok, ok—I’ll bite.
I proceeded to dive into all of the normal “Couch to 5k” running programs I could find and took my jump rope to a nearby park with a 1k walking path—sprinkling in running between jump rope sessions.
But something wasn’t adding up.
There was a lot of advice about walk-running to build endurance until one could run a block, two blocks, a mile.
Not to brag, but I wasn’t experiencing most beginner snags.
**“Ah, I know why—**I did most of my newbie wind-sucking two years ago!”
This isn’t to say I wasn’t still periodically sucking wind but after two years of consistent boxer skips and double-unders, getting gassed felt like part of the fun and not a medical emergency.
I also felt much springier than the average beginning runner—able to run for miles all over the city in the most minimal of footwear.
And so, I tried my hand at my first race—a donut-themed 10k. And silvered in my age group.
(Ok, there was only two of us…but my time was still respectable. 😂)
Running became an amazingly freeing activity, like getting my driver’s license for my legs.
But I still didn’t understand why running was coming easier to me than the average newcomer.
Digging still deeper, I unearthed another exciting revelation—this time from multi-decade sub-3-hour Boston Marathon runner and one of the foremost running experts on the planet, Dr. Mark Cucuzzella.
“Running with a jump rope is also an amazingly simple drill for posture, balance, and rhythm.”
In other words—form. Overall technique.
Digging a little keeper and experimenting on myself, I discovered just how similar proper running technique and proper jump rope technique were.
Both require:
And so many other commonalities. The list unraveled before me on every run.
And like running, without proper technique, jumping rope just doesn’t work—though the consequences are different.
For a jump roper, due to the lower impact, the risk of injury is quite minimal.
Most newbie rope slingers will report sore calves, slightly tender Achilles tendons, and the odd shin splint if they go full Rocky at it. No need to worry, though—most of these injuries see themselves out as the skipper becomes more experienced.
However, for runners, the injury story is more severe.
The next time you’re at a park with a good path, take a seat on a bench and watch the runners. See if you can spot folks reaching far out in front of them with straightened legs—smashing heels into the pavement.
This style of running results in everything from screaming knees, plantar fasciitis, lower back pain, to hips issues.
But why do all of these occur to new runners, but rarely to new jump ropers?
Most new runners commit a major physiological no-no when they begin their running journey: they treat running like fast, aggressive, airborne walking.
“Well, what is it supposed to be?”
Synchronized jumping.
Simply put, proper running is nothing more than a series of coordinated single leg jumps through space with each landing compressing the springs for the next stride.
To compare this synchronized jumping to the aggressive airborne walking of heel-led running, you can test these in just a few seconds.
Step 1: Stand up.
Step 2: Kick off your shoes.
Step 3: Jump up and down three times.
How did you land?
Probably on your mid-foot, knee bent slightly, with your weight stacked above your pelvis.
And did you use your compressed “leg springs” to launch you into the following two jumps?
Oddly enough, if you were to add a jump rope to this, you would on your way to spinning side swings like Lulu Hawton.
If you were to take this same technique one foot at a time moving forward, you would be running in a way that increases speed, preserves stamina (springs!), and drastically decreases your likelihood of injury.
Let’s try the same test with a few tweaks.
This time, jump, but land on your heels.
Your knees probably remained fairly straight and you felt the impact in your ankles, knees, hips, and possibly even your lower back.
Now, imagine attempting to jump rope this way.
It simply doesn’t work.
Not only would there be no second jump due to the lack of spring but the pain would stop you in your tracks—even in cushioned shoes.
But if jump rope technique and proper running technique are nearly identical, what are aggressive heel landings doing in running?
While a jump roper landing on their heels would resemble Frankenstein’s monster in an express lane to an orthopedist, this is how many people perform the aggressive airborne walk—aka, a heel-striking, over-striding run.
But why do we run this way? Well, our shoes let us get away with it.
Thick heel cushioning and a bit of forward momentum do a great job of masking the pain of repeated blows against every joint up the chain—for a while, anyway. Eventually, the chickens come home to roost in the form of stress fractures, meniscus tears, plantar fasciitis, “runner’s knee,” IT-band syndrome, and more.
Not to brag (and maybe to knock on some wood), I have never experienced any of these injuries in my three years of running.
Is this because I’m some kind of running genius with all of the cheat codes? Haha, I wish! It’s simply sheer luck that I started out with jumping rope before running—an activity that shares the same injury-preventing techniques.
So, are the shoes totally to blame? No.
It is possible to run with proper form in shoes with raised, cushioned heels. But it’s not as easy.
When your heel is totally cushioned, you will be able to run with a heel strike in the same way you can hit your head against a brick wall while wearing a football helmet. And in both instances, it will eventually become less about the forces outside of the foam and more about the forces inside the cushion against each other that do the most damage.
“So, how can getting a jump rope help me become a better runner?”
Jump rope is a tremendous training tool for runners for the same reason why running barefoot can also be helpful—the feedback is immediate.
Though running with inefficient and injurious form is possible, the feedback from doing so isn’t so immediate. When it comes to jumping rope, however, you won’t get through too many skips if you don’t learn to utilize the springs in your legs. The rope doesn’t pull punches.
So, get a rope and get started.
If you’re new to jump rope, I would recommend acquiring two pieces of equipment.
Firstly, find a jump rope with a little bit, but not too much, weight to it. The weight will help you feel the position of the rope during it’s entire rotation and remain in better sync with your wrist spins
My favorite rope for this purpose is a 7mm PVC model called the Hererope, which costs a whopping $15. If you find this to be too thick or heavy, a cheap 5mm PVC model will work as well.
Secondly, to protect your rope and provide a nice jumping surface, I would recommend a large foam-rubber exercise mat. My favorite is a massive 78” mat for $32—which is probably the cheapest jump rope mat you will find.
When it comes to footwear, barefoot is ideal. This will help strengthen and mobilize your feet—including your likely overly-supported neglected arches.
And just how does one begin to jump rope?
Start with short seasons hopping with both feet—maybe 30 seconds on, 30 seconds rest. Aim for minimal muscular activation, instead, using the recoil of your tendons and ligaments for suspension and launch as much as possible.
From jumping with both feet, move onto learning an alternating leg bounce—essentially a jog skip. Right, left, right, left—all while keeping an imaginary belt level with the horizon.
By now, you’re essentially running in place with an extremely efficient technique.
Now, apply your jump rope skills to your running!
This is going to seem quite bizarre, but it is possible (and even beneficial) to take your jump rope for a run.
And there you have it!
You may find it quite helpful to return to this drill once or twice a week. Also if you find your form slipping a bit or becoming slugging mid-run, feel free to skip imaginary rope to try to correct your technique mid-stride. It will restore lightness and springiness to your running.
I still find myself bringing my wrists to my pockets and spinning imaginary jump rope handles if I feel my technique is collapsing a bit or if my running is becoming less springy.
And remember, most importantly—have fun. 👍

2024.05.12 15:18 Die_Revenant SA Rugby CEO's son's company secures Springboks-Ireland test organisation without tender

SA Rugby CEO's son's company secures Springboks-Ireland test organisation without tender
Local rugby unions are seeing red because a company operated by the son of SA Rugby (Saru) CEO Rian Oberholzer has been appointed to organise the Springboks’ two tests against Ireland in July.
The company, Access Management Services (AMS), was furthermore appointed for the test on 6 July at Loftus Versfeld and the one a week later in Durban – without a tender process being followed.
A rugby boss at one local union: This is nepotism at its worst,” said a rugby boss at one local union.
“It’s a major conflict of interests,” said another one.
However, Saru said the appointment was made on the recommendation of World Rugby and subject to a “conflict management framework”.
“[The framework] is designed to avoid potential conflicts and specifically includes independent committees, while excluding the CEO [Oberholzer],” said the governing body in a statement.
The CEO left Access Management when he was appointed at Saru, so he has no financial interest in the company.
AMS was established in 2009 by Oberholzer and another former Saru bigwig, Songezo Nayo. Oberholzer was the MD and Nayo the chairperson of the company, which initially focused specifically on the management of the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium.
Over time, the company expanded its operations to organise events such as the British and Irish Lions’ tour to South Africa in 2021, Saru’s World Cup bid for the spectacle of 2023 and matches in the Rugby Championship in 2017 and 2018. Oberholzer’s son Lourens was appointed the company’s chief operating officer in 2017, his daughter Adriana was appointed its strategy and growth manager last year and Lourens’ wife Anika is its operations manager.
Lourens became the company’s CEO in 2022. At that time, Oberholzer was still the administrator of the beleaguered WP Rugby Union, but moved to Saru in 2023 to take over from Jurie Roux as CEO.
Oberholzer held this position from 1996 until 2003 and was reappointed last year until at least the end of 2025.
Oberholzer had little patience yesterday regarding the accusation of nepotism against him, saying there was “nothing sinister” about the appointment of AMS for the Irish series.
“I didn’t appoint AMS [to work for Saru]. The company was a service provider to Saru before my appointment [as CEO],” he said.
He added: I have nothing more to do with the company – I’m not a shareholder and I don’t benefit financially from it. It wouldn’t be right or ethical to remain involved,” he said. “I know where the complaints come from and I know they have their own agendas.
Lourens referred all enquiries about AMS to Saru.
A spokesperson for Saru told City Press’ sister publication Rapport that AMS was involved in the Springbok tests against Ireland because they would fall during a very busy time for the organisation, when it simply would not have enough employees to handle everything it was offering this year.
“AMS was appointed because of its experience and expertise in event delivery and to fill an immediate, short-term need,” he said.
“Saru’s responsible for delivering six test matches and three World Rugby events in 2024 (the World Rugby U20 Championship, WXV and Cape Town Sevens), as well as domestic competitions such as the Carling Currie Cup and Youth Weeks, with an operations department of just two people.
“There are seven Youth Weeks scheduled for the end of June to early July and the U20 World Cup is also taking place then. Saru’s going to arrange all this, but needs feet on the ground in the Ireland series,” he said.
The spokesperson confirmed that no tender process had been followed in the appointment.
“World Rugby worked with AMS when the WXV series [for women’s teams] took place last October in South Africa and was impressed enough to recommend that the company be used again this year.”
Saru once had its own organising affiliate: a company called SA Rugby Events Services (Sares), which was established in 2017 and at one point bore the name South African Rugby World Cup 2023. It had just one director: Jurie Roux. Sares helped host the sevens World Cup tournament in late 2022. Oberholzer said AMS worked for Sares at that tournament.
Saru told the publication yesterday that Sares was currently dormant and no decision had yet been made about its future.
Roux has been Sares’ only listed director since May 2023, after five others resigned, according to the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC).
Oberholzer said Sares was not being used for event organisation at this stage because it did not have staff. Roux, he added, would be removed as director once Saru’s plans to get a private equity partner were finalised.
In addition to the unhappiness of rugby unions over the AMS appointment, this company is also involved in potential legal action by ticket provider Ticketpro.
Ticketpro has a contract with the WP Rugby Union that ends in August 2024, but – according to an impeccable source – it is trying to negotiate a new contract.
There was therefore great anger when an email was sent last month to the provider informing it that its services would not be required for the Rugby Championship test between South Africa and New Zealand in September in Cape Town. The email, which came from the WP Rugby Union, was apparently not only sent to Ticketpro, but also to an employee of AMS.
At Ticketpro, there was bewilderment over this decision.
The publication asked Saru whether AMS would be involved in organising the Cape Town test, but did not get an answer.
Saru’s spokesperson said the Cape union no longer used Ticketpro. A source at the provider said it was common knowledge that its contract would not be renewed, with a third party working in another sporting code with Ticketpro telling it last week that he was sorry to hear that it had lost its Stormers contract.
The relationship between Ticketpro (which has a contract with the Stormers rugby union to sell tickets until August this year) and Oberholzer senior was extremely strained during the period he handled the administration of the union, according to an informed source.
“We heaved a sigh of relief when he moved on from the WP, because it was unpleasant working with him,” said the individual.
“However, the relief was short-lived: we’ve already heard stories that he’s encouraging some rugby unions to suspend their agreements with us.”
Oberholzer said it was an “absolute absurdity” to suggest that he interfered with Ticketpro and the Cape union’s agreement.
“How did I get so much power?” he asked. “Why didn’t I get rid of them when I was the administrator of the union?”

Nature of Humanity Ch 66
A Rose by Any Other Name, Part 15
A Fanfic of u/SpacePaladin15’s work “The Nature of Predators.” Thank you for the story!
___
Memory transcription subject: Talen, Prime News Anchor
Date [standardized human time]: November 3rd, 2136
Hospital lights are infamous for being bright to the point of inducing migraines and eye fatigue. This is, of course, done for a ‘good’ reason. To discourage Predators from attacking hospitals for an easy meal. It’s common knowledge a predator will attack the weak, sick, and injured before attacking someone that can actually fight back. It surprised me when I learned this was one of the few ‘facts’ the Federation actually had, mostly, right.
Unfortunately, in practice all these lights have ever really done is attract bugs and the Arxur. Like a neon side at an all-you-can-eat salad bar, the power draw alone was a beacon for raids. This has led to many people choosing to suffer in silence rather than be admitted to a hospital.
My mind flashed to the angry Texan ranting about the poor quality of life we awarded to those less fortunate than ourselves. Thoughts of the older woman who confessed to us that her husband had been shot and left as a sacrifice to Human soldiers made me wonder if these hospitals were actually built to serve… another purpose. To act as a distraction, so the Federation can evacuate those they actually value.
I glanced at the doctor and nurse leaving Rose's room. My application to be her guardian was… weak at best, and still under UN review. Most likely they wouldn't provide me any information beyond just whether I could see her or not.
One of the Venlil doctors looked tear-struck as he gave one last glance back into Rose’s room. He quickly perked himself up or at least put the facade on as he walked over to the waiting room. He scanned the human faces in here as he asked, “McDermott? Talen McDermott?”
The sudden addition to my name caught me off guard to the point I just sat in stunned silence. After a moment of looking around he asked again, before looking at his notes with a confused look on his face. Before he left, I gently raised my paw into the air, “My name is Talen. Just Talen. I applied for guardianship over Rose McDermott. It's still in review…”
He cocked his head to the side for a moment before his assumptions finally broke, “Ah! My apologies. If you would, please come with me, sir.”
The doctor led me to his office and offered me a seat. As he started to type on his computer, he flicked an ear to the screen facing me as a QR code came up. As my pad downloaded the data packet, he began to explain, “Alright, so as you are aware Rose has been through… some traumatic events. Both physical and mental.”
I started to look through the data as he carried on, “To start with, she clawed out most of her eyes. The nerves at the back of the eye were mostly fine and took to the nerve plate well. When she's had some time to heal, it should be simple to restore her sight. The main issue we have is that the war is stepping up, and we are getting more people coming back in need of our cloning machines.”
He pulled up a small list of human prosthetic companies on my pad, “Which means we can't make Rose a new set of organic eyes for… the foreseeable future. Which is why we opted to prep her for Optics while we wait. These companies have been vetted as trustworthy manufacturers, and the Hospital we plan to transfer Rose to on Venlil Prime will be more than capable of handling the installation.”
By the stars, how close was I to failing to save her at all? I nodded my head as I bit my lip and tried to stay calm, “Alright. So she will have prosthetic eyes soon?”
He wagged his tail meekly, “Maybe in about [two weeks] if the healing goes fine. It's best not to rush nervous systems when it comes to healing. It's not an easy process.”
He showed me an X-ray of Rose's teeth, “Now as for her teeth, we were able to save those. They are set in place but still need time to heal. It will take about twenty-one days for them to heal to a point where she can use them as she would normally.”
He pulled multiple photos of federation friendly, Terran food up, “So soft food until then. Soups, leafy salads with nothing hard… I have included a list and a few links to human recipes that will more than meet her nutritional requirements while she recovers, as well as into her care under you until she ages out.”
My mind drifted to the pills she had been given, “Ok then uhm, what about the medication she was on? Something like that… It could…”
He gently laid his paw on mine, “Her system is clean and showing no signs of a chemical dependency. That doesn't mean there won't be mental factors involved that could encourage her to seek escape through pharmaceuticals again. So long as her mental needs are met, she should recover well.”
I glanced up and quickly wiped away a few tears, “Ok, then… I don't know if I am the best person for that…”
“A lot of her care will simply just be showing her love, affection and that she matters and there is nothing wrong with her being human.” He looked ashamed as he spoke, “She will still need… Human care. From my personal research into the field, Humans need physical contact to be healthy and deteriorate slowly when isolated.”
He leaned forward and flicked his ears for my full attention, “Also do NOT let any Federation trained Psychiatrist near her. The Humans are miles ahead of us in terms of psychology and the treatment of those whose minds differ from the norm. It won't be easy to get a human Psychiatrist, but Rose will be high up on the list of those available to get help. Partly due to her unique situation but also to her parent's service and sacrifice.”
I let out a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding. I will never be able to give her everything she needs, but I can at least hold the tide back long enough for those who can. I have an empty bedroom for her to make her own… I'm not far from a refugee center school, so it shouldn't be hard for her to interact with other humans in a friendly environment… Food costs are going to go up… Ah. I haven't been working… Kotaka isn't going to fire me, but I have used all of my vacation time for this… I let out a lite cough, “And payment?”
He gave a curt nod, “Already paid. Part of her compensation for her parents’ service and sacrifice.”
I hope they don't know how their daughter was failed after everything they gave for her, “I'd like to see her if that's possible.”
He stood up from his desk, “Of course, follow me.”
We left his office behind and navigated the winding hallways designed to hopefully slow an Arxur raider from clearing the hospital quickly. I could remember when hospitals were built with quickly traversing them in mind. It took nearly no time to get to Aylin when she went into labor… it took the Arxur nearly no time to get to her in the hospital she was working at.
He stopped just at the precipice of one of the room's and rasped his knuckles on the door frame, “Rose? Are you awake? Your guardian is here to see you.”
He flicked his tail for me to enter as he turned the lights on. Rose was sitting right there. Her bed had been raised to a sitting position, but her head was leaned against a pillow as she slept. The doctor flicked the light's on, and I angrily gestured that she was sleeping.
I felt a bit stupid when I realized why the lights being on wouldn't bother her right now. He smiled like both a Venlil and a Human and dimmed the lights to half brightness before ducking out of the room. I crept as quietly as I could to Rose's bedside, my unkempt nails clacking against the floor. Yet, Rose didn't stir as I sat in a nearby chair.
Every time we have met has coincided with some of the worst times for us. My mind blamed me. Not for my failure to control myself back during the exchange program. But for seeking her out. If I had respected her parent's wishes of us never speaking again, then surely they wouldn't have died. Earth wouldn't have been bombed. Rose wouldn't- Rose wouldn't- … I'm full of shit.
The events that led to this were primarily out of my control. Beyond my failure, I wasn't the one who convinced the Gojids to try and attack, nor was I the one who made the Krakotl actually do it. I didn't introduce that predator Venlil to Rose. He was just trying to help her. I did the only thing I could, and if I hadn’t… no one else was coming to save her.
I leaned forward and grasped her hand in my paw. Physical contact was proven to drastically improve a Human's ability to heal.
Her skin was cold under my paw pads. Would she call them beans like the lady who helped me find her?
Her hand flexed around mine, squeezing it with just the slightest amount of force. Have her dreams just changed? Hopefully, for the better. Will she awake and know who is here beside her?
With my free paw. I swept a blood orange lock of greasy hair from her face. It's been so long since I had the slightest glimpse of her face burned into my mind. Now half of it was covered in bandages.
I sat and waited as she rested. As time ebbed and flowed on around us, nurses would come in and check her vitals as she slept. Eventually, her doctor returned and unprompted explained the painkillers she was on were known to cause drowsiness. She likely hadn't been sleeping well.
He wrote me a short list of sleep aids that were human safe… well, rather he was until he decided to throw it away and write me a list of the ones to not give her. Humans were starting to become infamous for the toxin tolerance in the medical field as many doctors were uncomfortable prescribing such high doses of medicine for their new human patients.
Her thumb began to work its way through the fluff on the back of my paw as Rose slowly stirred awake. Her grip tightened a little bit as she groggily turned her head in my rough direction, “hrm… hello?”
My words caught in my throat as I tried to speak a dozen thoughts at once. Her hand pulled away in fear as she held herself in her arms, “I'm sorry! I'm sorry… I didn't mean to scare you.”
“No!” My right law landed on her shoulder eliciting a small surprised jump, “Don't apologize Rose. Don't ever apologize for just existing. You have done nothing wrong.”
Her hand found its way to my paw resting on her shoulder still and grabbed it. She looked confused as she tried to place my voice, “I- uh- who- Do I know you?”
Once again my words hung In my throat, but I squeezed Rose's shoulder and could see a small bit of the fear leave, “It's me Rose… I know I wasn't supposed to contact you but… It's me. Talen…”
Her hands flew to her mouth as her breath hitched in her lungs. I could hear sobbing begin as she tried to speak, “I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I-”
My free paw quickly found its way to her cheek as I stood up. I pulled her closer, into my arms and instinctively groomed her hair. She wrapped her arms around me and squeezed, and I wrapped my arms around her and squeezed just as hard. Her head sunk into the fluff on my chest as she began to sob.
I held her. As tenderly as I could. Memories of holding a young Elva, who had just come back from another terrible day at school, rushed back to my mind, “Rose, you weren't the reason- What happened back on the station had nothing to do with you.”
She managed to choke out a “But-”
I shook my head, “No buts. None. When the Arxur killed my wife, I was on a call with her. I witnessed it. When Elva was being bullied at school for being a little more assertive than normal, I had to stop the exterminators from locking her away in an institution. As a news reporter, I've seen so many supposedly good people do horrid things to those with no power.”
I groomed the top of her head to give me a chance to compile the rest of my thoughts, “So when I did my job as a journalist comparing what the Federation ‘knew’ about humanity and what humanity was saying about itself… I couldn't see what was the truth. When my Daughter wanted to join the exchange program with me… I only joined, so I could try and keep her safe.”
I ran my paw across the top of her head, “Then I met you. I forgot my fears. I never addressed them. Just buried. Then we were sent to different stations and I realized I couldn’t protect Her. When you finally walked into the room, I had been slipping into a panic spiral and… well… I broke. I was desperately trying to get to Elva, trying to rationalize what I have witnessed against propaganda against you, trying and failing to separate what happened to Aylin with what was happening then and I… failed to.”
Rose's sobbing had begun to calm down as we just held each other. I took in a deep breath and felt it catch in my lungs. The tear soaked fur on my face stuck to my it as I pressed my head to the top of hers.
She slightly pulled away but stayed in my embrace, “I'm sorry about Elva. She was so nice…”
The sorrow in her voice caught me off-guard, “Wha- why are you sorry about her?”
Her head dipped, “I- I saw your news coverage of the Cradle raid. I recognized her when it- when that Arxur killed her. If it wasn't for us- she wouldn't-”
I ran my paw over her head, “Elva didn't die. She is actually going on a special mission for the UN right now. Even then, it's not Humanity's fault that happened. If Humanity hadn’t shown up, the Arxur raid that attacked the other exchange station would have led to another raid on Venlil Prime. It would have led to all of us dying.”
I cooed over her, “Humanity has been a blessing every person in this galaxy has needed. For the first time in my life, I feel like things might actually improve. Humanity- No. You have lost so much. I know how much it hurts to lose your parent’s to war. Though, I had gotten the joy of spending most of my life with them. I am so sorry this has happened to you.”
She buried her face in her hands, “I miss them so much. I just want them back!”
I pulled her back into my arms, “Don’t let go of it, Rose. Everything you have of them still… carry them with you. Make sure the world doesn’t forget them.”
Her sobbing came back, thick, heavy and ugly, but I didn’t run as she gripped me with every bit of strength she had. I held her as she fell back asleep.
As gently as I could, I laid her back against her pillows and cleaned some mucus off her face. I was also grateful for the cleaning room they had in the hospital as I prepared myself to function as a pillow once more. It wasn’t long before she stirred again, “I’m right here, Rose. I am not abandoning you.”
She nodded her head as she held herself with her arms, “What’s going to happen now?”
I moved a fiery lock of hair out of her face, “Well… I have applied for guardianship of you… at least until you are old enough to live on your own. Then you can leave at your leisure. I- You are always welcome in my home. Speaking of which, we will be headed to Venlil Prime soon. It’s a better environment there. Most of the Venlil in Dayside city are human friendly. You are getting transferred to a hospital there and will be staying with me. I am also going to try and get you to see a human Psychiatrist. Well, I may also see if they’ll see me. I could use some help too.”
Rose didn’t laugh at my joke, “Meji. He- He was always kind to me. Even with everything that was done to him, he was just really nice and tried to help me. I know he’s a drug addict, but- I don’t think he will survive much longer here.”
I tried to steer the conversation away from that… man, “I- I met him… and I think he’s going to be able to take care of himself just fine.”
I could hear the fear in her voice, “No… he's… he’s only been on the streets for six months… and that’s what he looks like. I watched him lose weight… he's just not…”
Here I am… he's probably in the same boat that Tarlim was once in. What kind of fucking idiot am I!? Of course, every institute is going to be the same. I cleared my throat, “I know he got the attention of some human soldiers. They got him to see one of their doctors. If I know anything, then he is probably being helped whether he wants it or not. I will do my job as a reporter and get the scoop on him for you. But for right now, let’s… Let’s rest. It’s been a long road, and we haven’t had a chance to shelter from the storm.”

It’s been a long time coming but these two are probably going to be fine… probably.

2024.05.11 20:19 Figgy45 Tough Sirloin

I’m new to MS, but have ordered sirloins and fillets through Hello Fresh and Home Chef many times. While they might not be the best cuts of meat, they’ve been tasty and somewhat tender. I got the sirloin from MS this week and they were inedible! So tough. Both steaks. We couldn’t even choke them down so I put some frozen chicken nugs in the air fryer. I’m so bummed bc I didn’t realize I have them in my box for next week and it’s too late to change. AND a friend just signed up with my code after I was bragging about how good it was and they ordered sirloins! 🤦🏻‍♀️ please tell me this isn’t the norm!

2024.05.11 18:24 RealSeat2142 GERD claim advice?

So I am lookinng to file a GERD claim. I got out way back in 1991 and did not know anythiing abouut VA claims until maybe 2 years ago.
So I am currently at 80% with Tinnitis, PTSD, Rhinitis.
I am going to file GERD secondary to PTSD. I have a diagnosis of Gerd ICD codes K21.0 and K21.9 back on 1/26/2018. I have them from much earlier but nothing I can find and that doctor is retired and long gone.
Should I file before the deadline without a NEXUS and add a NEXUS letter later before the C&P? I have been told I need a much more current diagnosis. My doctor is on vacation until the 20th.
I do have the intent to file already but I have been told several conflicting things about what is required to get in before the deadline of the ratings changes. My understanding is that the clim must be submitted. That is my plan.
Thanks for the advice in advance.

2024.05.11 17:34 blackthorn_orion The Nintendo Breakdown 2: An updated overview of confirmed, leaked, and rumored projects from Nintendo and its close partners

Hello again! About 6 months ago, I put together a Nintendo roundup that got some positive feedback, and with this week’s double-whammy of the Switch successor kinda being announced and a direct being confirmed for June, I figured now was as good a time as any to put out an updated version so folks can know where things stand and have something to chew on while they wait. My intent is to update this post after the June direct with any new information. Please let me know if anything's borked, as formatting big posts on reddit can get a bit wonky and some of these links are getting old
Nintendo Entertainment Planning and Development (EPD): Formed in 2015 as part of a restructuring that unified Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development (EAD) and Nintendo Software Planning and Development (SPD). When people talk about “in-house Nintendo”, this is usually what they mean. EPD groups are primarily small producedirector-led teams that then scale up and pull from a shared “pool” of developers as projects get further into development. EPD’s many sub-groups can essentially be divided into those that primarily develop their own games and those focused more on overseeing/collaborating with other studios (both non-EPD Nintendo studios as well as fully external developers), though there are exceptions and gray areas
Development-focused groups
Oversight and collaborative groups
Other Nintendo-owned Studios: Mario World outside of EPD
Close Partners and Frequent Collaborators: The Nintendo Keiretsu and Friends
Misc. Odds and Ends. Things that didn’t really fit anywhere else, big grain of salt for some of these
Engine Talk: Finally, it’s a bit esoteric but with game engines becoming an increasingly common point of conversation and speculation, I figured I’d put together a rundown of some of the engines used in Nintendo games. This isn’t a comprehensive list (esp. because many studios use proprietary engines that aren’t well-documented), but should give a general idea of who uses what to make what (shouts-out to OatmealDome on twitter for doing the datamining work whenever a new game comes out, and MondoMega on Famiboards for maintaining a useful graphic that collates most of this information) )

2024.05.11 03:31 DaGreeg Trying to load some mods, getting a crash report

SO!
I have zero idea what I'm really doing, and hoping the kind people of the internet can aid me.

I'm trying to run 1.20.6, as you do, with the following mods: - BetterF3-10.0.0-Fabric-1.20.6.jar
- cicada-lib-0.7.2+1.20.5-and-above.jar
- inventoryhud.fabric.1.20.6-3.4.21.jar
- iris-1.7.0+mc1.20.6.jar
- sodium-fabric-0.5.8+mc1.20.6.jar
- voxelmap-1.20.6-1.12.19.jar
- do_a_barrel_roll-fabric-3.5.6+1.20.6.jar
- fabric-api-0.97.8+1.20.6.jar (I have also tried this is the 0.98.0 version, no difference..)
I have concluded through trial and error that the issue lies between Do a barrel roll (DABR) and iris and sodium. Loading them independently of one another results in minecraft loading fine, no issues whatsoever. It's only when I try run them together that problems arise.
If anyone is able to help, please send me your wisdom. It is much appreciated :D

2024.05.10 20:04 cuvel19 Is it to soon to ask for a raise in my company ?

Hello I would like some advice because I would like soon to start negotiating a increase in salary in my company. Any advice is highly appreciated, some background information first:
Joined the company nearly 2 years ago, this is my second job after 2 years in a BIG 4 company. I was engaged to functionnal analyst of the ERP of the company department (65 people) under my N+1. At the moment I was engaged, we were functioning with 3 other consultants in the team. One Product Owner, One Junior consultant and a Technical analyst.
I'm also concerned I might be too soon to ask for a raise after only 2 years...

2024.05.10 17:41 LastYogurtcloset660 can someone help me?

Hi, guys! First post in this group. For the last few months, I've been having tests done for a potential CSF leak (brain CT and MRI revealed intracranial hypotension with all the classic symptoms of a leak). I present many symptoms of a leak ie- brain stem sag, posterior fossa crowding, low laying tonsils. I got my spine MRI results back and there was no leakage. In fact, there was nothing except low laying tonsils. However, my brain MRI/CT indicated a bunch of sinus issues. CT was on March 14th- Mild mucosal thickening involving the paranasal sinuses. The mastoidair cells are clear
Mri was on March 29- Mucosalthickening of the maxillary sinus ethmoid sinus and frontalsinus. Heterogeneous T2 signal with restricted effusion inthe region of the pharyngeal tonsils. No enhancingcollection to suggest abscess. Increased signal within the pharyngeal tonsils, likelyinfectious/inflammatory. I was not ill when these were taken. I still dont feel ill. If anyone would like to see images, let me know.
The neurologist noted that I have lost the curvature of both the spine and cervical and diagnosed me with cervicogenic headaches. Also some herniated discs in the thoracic region (T4-T6) and some bulging in the neck (C6-C7). He says there is also reduced flow in the R neck and has requested i do a CT angiogram for the head + neck to rule out any torn vessels. Right after this appointment, I did some blood work and said blood work revealed that my ferritin is very low (at a 10). Funny enough, I have been in contact with Linda Leithe from Duke and she says I present with a partially empty sella and tonsillar ectopia...she thinks my brain is in HIGH pressure. I have had MULTIPLE diagnoses and i am so stumped. I've seen my MD, a neurologist, optometrist, getting referred to a neurosurgeon, ENT and an ophtalmologist. I have done a brain CT (with con), spine and brain MRI, CTA for head and neck.
I'm wondering if anyone has some insight on this. My doctor thinks my iron is fine and shouldn't impact me. My neuro thinks the neck is certainly a contributing factor, but didn't mention IIH at all. My optometrist says my eyes are fine (seeing him again today). I feel like an incomplete puzzle and want these sudden symptoms to go away :(
At the moment, my symptoms are as follows:
Headaches and VERY stiff neck
Ear leakage (often) and the pressure in my R ear is INSANE.
R lymph node has been swollen for awhile, is slightly tender.
Tinnitus (sometimes a pounding so loud my heart feels like it will come out of my ears, at other times, just ringing)
Dizziness/blurry vision (also black dots in my vision occasionally)... the blurry vision is AWFUL and is very bad in the mornings.
Shortness of breath
Pins and needles sometimes into my whole arm, often just the finger tips.
Blood pressure has risen
Palpitations and chest pain (went from severe to very very mild)
I am a 33 year old active female. I have always had back pain and "slipped ribs".
Here is the spinal report (but the radiologist missed a lot according to my neuro). I have also attached a photo.
Alignment is normal. Spinal cord has normal signal and morphology. No spinal longitudinal extradural collection fluid.
Vertebral body height and marrow signal is preserved.
Spinal canal is capacious. At T4 and T5-T6 there are moderate left paracentral posterior disc protrusions which cause mild to moderate indentation of the anterior thecal sac. No abnormal cord signal.
There is no mild to moderate face osteoarthritis in the lumbar spine.
*The radiologist noted that there is NO mild to moderate facet osteoarthritis in the lumbar spine.... is this an error? I feel like it wouldn't even be mentioned if i didn't have it.
Conus terminates appropriately at L2.
No paraspinal soft tissue abnormality.
Any feed back is appreciated!! Sorry for the long post. <3

2024.05.10 06:59 IIRISHSOL Starting TRT next week

Starting TRT next week
I'm 27M and I'm considering trt. Currently I'm past the point of drawing blood and speaking to a men's hormones focused doctor (all she does is work in a clinic that handles trt and hgh for men). My levels were at 382 and she wants to give me I think about a 100mg shot once a week of some plant based testosterone for start and says that a good test level for me might be around 800 so we will start with that. Is this normal or safe?
Also I included the paperwork she gave me. She said a more in depth chart will be done 6 weeks from the start of therapy. I pushed it off a week to learn more from you guys and ask a couple friends who are doing it.

2024.05.10 01:44 nTYSE So…let me get this straight

The new warbond, which is themed around snow and ice to the point the armor sets have spiked boots, contains armor that serves LITERALLY no purpose. No better traction on ice, no cold resistance…nothing.
And all the guns are mid af, nor did we even get a major order that cycled through a snow planet to even try and fit the theme. And the tenderizer gun looks like they coded the wrong one into the game.
What in the name of almighty fuck is this warbond lmao.
