2024.04.29 02:30 yoshigronk Need recommendations for a bill pay app or service that will let me pay on my auto loan with a credit card

Hey all. I'm really not sure where to ask this but I figured this is a good place since there's many people here who have experience with paying on their auto loans.
I plan to get a credit card with 0% interest for 18 months and would like to use it on my auto loan to get ahead of it to pay off sooner. After that, it will primarily be used responsibly as a cashback card just like my other credit cards.
PayPal only lets you pay bills with a bank account and Western Union only let's you pay bills with billers who work with them, which the financial institution the loan is through does not. Any help is greatly appreciated!

2024.04.29 02:18 Jeshannah Okay, so FDIC supposedly covers up to $250K per account and is supported by the Fed (unless they resort to bail-ins). In other words, the supply tap is “unlimited” (printer go brrrrr). What about the NCUA for credit unions? Who supports them in SHTF scenario (if anyone)?

2024.04.29 02:13 acezeus Tenants Rights/Move-in Rights

I recently moved from out-of-state into an apartment in CT, only to find it dirty and not prepared for move-in. I had signed the lease and sent first-months rent and security deposit on April 9th with a move-in date of April 19th and arrived yesterday, Saturday April 27th, to collect my keys and drop off new furniture and belongings. Unfortunately, the apartment was not as advertised. Prior to signing my lease, the realtor who showed me the place virtually had assured me of the quality and location, and the videos of it seemed promising, which led me to trust his judgment and sign the lease. I did not hire this realtor myself — they posted the rental online.
Upon arrival yesterday, I found the apartment unclean and was also missing a key fob for parking as well as a mailbox key. The property management office was closed, so I contacted the 24-hour maintenance line at 10am. I received no response and it wasn't until a second call 6 hours later in the day that I managed to speak with a property manager. This property manager came by this morning to drop off my keyfob but he didn‘t have the mailbox key. We spoke for a bit and he said he would arrange for the same person who supposedly cleaned the apartment — before my arrival — to clean it again tomorrow. The individual who is meant to clean the apartment tomorrow called me to arrange a time to arrive. However during our phone-call he confirmed that he had been at the apartment two days prior to ”clean”, which means the apartment was not ready by the April 19th move-in date.
I insisted on a professional cleaning service, which the property manager has not agreed to, instead suggesting I hire one myself and receive a rental credit as reimbursement.
Given these issues, including unfulfilled lease conditions and mismanagement, I am wondering if I have any legal grounds to terminate my lease, get a full refund of my rent and deposit, and/or receive compensation for my travel expenses across the country and buying furniture for an apartment that was not move-in ready. I bought house supplies and furniture which currently sits in a corner of the apartment that I cleaned myself. What are my options here?

2024.04.29 02:10 hamburgerz Michigan credit union won’t release deposit account to beneficiary (me)

I’m posting here because I’ve reached out to about a dozen lawyers over the last half year and they don’t really seem to listen to my story or know how to help. Usually I hear “hm that’s weird” and that’s about it. This is Wayne county Michigan, maybe, idk if the county matters but that’s where his house is.
  1. I want to know if someone in legal field thinks I have a case and should keep pursuing trying to find a lawyer. If I’m wrong then fine I’ll accept it but I’m pretty sure my rights have been violated.
  2. What kind of lawyer would be best if I do need one, no offense to the probate lawyers but they seem to not be interested in any sort of arguing and used to just dealing with paperwork, which is fair. So I feel like a different type of lawyer might be fit but I don’t know what speciality.
  3. Anyone qualified out there interested in taking this case or have a reference ? Please dm me if so
I have a 5 page document I wrote of the detailed timeline but I will give the TLDR here.
My mom died 2 years ago and my dad died last year, therefore my dad had single party accounts but left me as 100% beneficiary on his deposit account at DFCU Financial credit union. He had a checking account, a deposit savings account with about 70k so not like a huge amount of money compared to some estates, new car loan, a mortgage loan with a balance of about 25% of the homes current value all at this credit union.
The bank refuses to release his bank account to the beneficiary, me, because there’s a mortgage? Was their justification. That I was paying personally after he died and wasn’t past due. It is now 10 months they’ve been hanging on to it and they still refuse to send me paperwork to accept funds as beneficiary. I also think they withdrew about 1/3 of the funds to pay off a car loan that should’ve gone to probate as a debt. This is a big deal to me because my dad had no life insurance, he died young-ish so it was a big funeral expense (hundreds of people came) about 20k and the only money he left to me was in this account. I had to pay for everything out of pocket and I’m in a lot of debt now paying for the funeral on credit and for his home and bills etc. The repairs on his home have amounted to more than 25k too to pass occupancy inspection so I can sell it. So I incurred a significant amount of debt and interest by not having access to these funds is my point here. (Yes I have my own savings account before people tell me I’m financially irresponsible but I have my own mortgage I need to protect and I’m glad I didn’t drain my cash because I also got laid off 2 months after his death. Happy news though I did find a new job last month)
Someone at the bank confirmed over the phone I was 100% sole beneficiary of his accounts and they need to send me forms to accept funds after they receive the death certificate. I agreed and said fine and also informed them the house was left to me in a lady bird enhanced life estate deed so it would go to my name soon and I understand I would be responsible for mortgage too personally and I would pay it monthly while I tried to sell his house. Fiduciary dept then got involved and blocked my emails to that representative who said I was beneficiary, called me next day and essentially said okay but what about the car loan you need to pay it off. I said well I can give you his car to settle that loan but they wanted me to pay the difference. I said no if there is a debt in his name you can request it through probate like every other debt collector has to. They did not like this and immediately hired a lawyer and told me no one at their credit union would talk to me anymore. This all happened within 2 weeks after his death btw and no payments were past due on anything at this time back in July 2023.
So now I had to talk to this outsourced lawyer who made the claim that the credit union had a right to offset the car loan and they will withdraw the money from the bank account that I said they do not have permission to do. Now please listen to my argument on why I think this does not apply before agreeing with the bank first. For additional context, I am a younger adult female grieving her parents if that gives an idea how the bank viewed me.
  1. The first issue: the credit union feels that the deposit account can be withdrawn from for loans after the member died and before it is transferred to the beneficiary. I think the bank withdrew money from the account belonging to the beneficiary because I got a letter the car loan was paid off which I did not do. The Michigan legislature they reference only says they have the right to do this if account is past due and says nothing about death. It also says it only applies to a multiple party account, and from the definition I believe my dad’s is a single party account because everything was in his name only. There were no co-signers or extra names on any accounts.
  2. Lastly I think the credit union is violating my rights under the Michigan EPIC act to unreasonably withhold funds a beneficiary is entitled to.
REFERENCES 1. 490.361 Capital; share payments; entrance fee; secondary capital; liability of member for acts, debts, or obligations of domestic credit union; placement of lien on member account. https://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(ne2kize2ihvsfogeoq3lmaq4))/mileg.aspx?page=getObject&objectName=mcl-490-361 this is not applicable for a couple reasons: • This clause only relates to member withdrawing money, not transferring it to a beneficiary. • I am not a member and there is nothing in writing saying my dad is still a member after his death. The estate and the beneficiary of his deposit account are not mutually exclusive since he is deceased. • This withholding is prohibited by state law in violation of the Michigan EPIC act which states that credit unions are responsible to transfer beneficiary funds on death (TOD) and that ownership of accounts are effected upon death. https://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/mcl/pdf/mcl-Act-386-of-1998.pdf
490.64 Right to set-off or lien 1. Not applicable because it is not a multiple party account here, all accounts and loans were solely in my dads name only, as the clause says it pertains to. a. "490.64 Right to set-off or lien. Sec. 14. Without qualifying any other statutory right to set-off or lien and subject to any contractual provision, when a party to a multiple-party account is indebted to a credit union, the credit union has a right to set-off against the entire amount of the account." 2. 490.57 https://www.legislature.mi.gov/Laws/MCL?objectName=MCL-490-57 states that the beneficiary has rights to any remaining sum upon death, not upon offset. Direct from clause: a. EVEN IF this was a multiple party account, they are still violating this state legislature:
"Trust account; beneficial ownership; death of trustee; survivorship. Sec. 7. An account which states that a party is a trustee for 1 or more other identified persons, including but not limited to minors, is a trust account. Except where there is evidence of a trust other than as provided by the form of the account, the account and any sums withdrawn therefrom are presumed to belong beneficially to the trustee until his death. At the death of the trustee or surviving trustee any sums remaining on deposit are presumed to belong to the person or persons named as beneficiaries, if living, or to the survivor of them if 1 or more have died before the trustee."
At this point I don’t just want the funds released to me I want to sue the credit union and make sure they don’t do this to more grieving people. Am I wrong or do I have a right to sue them since I’m not a member?

2024.04.29 02:09 MrsZuproc808 PRICED OUT OF SWEET PARADISE🌺

Born and raised Maui girl, practically lived paycheck to paycheck. My husband and I are finally able to purchase a home. Home prices are so high and so are the rates. It is so hard to find a move in ready home under $1 million. Most lenders won't even give loans that high. My spouse and I have good credit, good debt to income, debt no more 12k. We are not asking to live extravagant. We are looking for a 4 bd, 2 or more bath home in or close to town. I know I shouldn't have looked at homes before hearing from a lender so I wouldn't fall in love with what I can't afford, but NOTHING ON MAUI IS AFFORDABLE for a family of 5 with pets. There is a beautiful home I'd die for but is priced for 1.35million 😭. Looking at a mortgage of 7-10k. It's difficult with a mortgage like that living in Hawaii. We applied online with our credit union on 4/22. The reached out soon after. They said it would "a stretch" for the home and better chances with a co-borrower. We really don't want to do it that way. No one really wants to cosign anything. The credit union lender said he'd look into it and let us know but haven't heard back yet. The first lender said basically the same thing and our buying power is about 600k. I have MS and really don't want a home that needs to be worked on. There is nothing move in ready. Is the home I'm hoping and praying for really just in my dreams and really not attainable? Pls any advice or guidance please. My mom passed suddenly and she is who'd I'd ask for help, so I'm just really lost. I just hope, prat, Manifest daily!Help please!

2024.04.29 02:08 Wide_Ad928 Found an archived forum discussion from January 19 2002

I was reading an archived discussion from Jan 19, 2002 between 2 people https://groups.google.com/g/alt.true-crime/c/7vKmy74gv9o/m/zNZXsyiWcdgJ and the 3rd post down (you have to click on each header to expand the text) links to an article written By ROBERT GAVIN on Saturday, October 20, 2001. He writes key details which coincides with the surveillance cameras in century 21 as seen on unsolved mysteries of her in the women's jacket / coat department & also 1 detail that is different from what people today are saying what she brought.
"Dr. Lieberman said he and his wife, despite their hectic schedules, managed to spend a day together on Sept. 9, and the two just lounged around. She talked about buying a winter coat."
I wonder if their conversation on Sept 9th was her already buying a winter coat or planning to buy a winter coat ? because on Sept. 10th on the surveillance camera footage you can see her in the Century 21 women's jacket / coat department. Aside from her shoulder purse you can also see her holding a large store basket it seems ? with items in it, so I wonder if she could of have exchanged / returned the coat she already purchased if that was part of the discussion Sept 9th with Ron ?
"By tracing an American Express credit card, Dr. Lieberman learned that his wife shopped at Century 21, a department store next door to the World Trade Center. She made two purchases in the store, including lingerie, panty hose and shoes. The total amount spent was around $550."
I wonder where he got panty hose from ? or did he just forget to write bed linens ? and two purchases is very specific, I can see panty hose being on 1 receipt with either lingerie or with just the shoes as that item kinda fits in both categories / department.
"When Dr. Lieberman came home Monday around 11:15 p.m., he noticed his wife was not home and that there were no shopping bags there, either. He said he assumed his wife slept at the nearby home of her brother, John Philip, 26, or at the home of her cousin, Anu Rice, 33, who lives in Brooklyn. He said his wife may have not called home for fear of waking him. He said he was not overly concerned at this point."
Does anyone remember how close her brother lived to the Century 21 department store ? I wonder if it started to pour and rain down hard, that it was just more convenient for her to get to his place quicker then to go back to her home and not get soaked from the rain ? But then this scenario would always have me leaning towards foul play from her brother from their tumultuous relationship from the police report accusations which til this day doesn't really makes sense to me as to why the police would make that up ??? Her cousin Anu / Anne seems very poised in the Unsolved Mysteries interview, I just can't see her doing anything nefarious to Sneha.

Somewhere beneath the tons of soot and twisted metal that used to be the World Trade Center are the answers to thousands of missing persons cases in New York City.
But a short distance away, no one can seem to explain the disappearance of Battery Park City resident Dr. Sneha Ann Philip.
The 31-year-old physician at St. Vincent's Medical Center in West Brighton vanished the evening of Sept. 10 -- one day before a terrorist attack leveled the Twin Towers. Still unknown is whether Dr. Philip fell victim to the Trade Center tragedy, was kidnapped, suffered amnesia, or somehow found safety.
More than five weeks later, authorities remain tight-lipped about their investigation into the physician's mysterious disappearance. "If she was just lost, we would have closed the case by now," said one law enforcement source familiar with the investigation, adding only that investigators are pursuing a number of leads and have not ruled out foul play.
Relatives of Dr. Philip say they have scoured the city looking for clues and have even hired private investigators.
"I know something happened to her," said her mother, Ansu Philip, in a telephone interview from her home in upstate Hopewell Junction. She said her daughter was deeply in love with her husband of 18 months, belonged to a tight-knit Indian family, and would never simply run off. "If she's anywhere in this world alive, she would call me. That's the way she is."
Mrs. Philip fears her daughter, who she said looks "Middle Eastern" and was shopping next door to the skyscrapers the night she vanished, might have encountered terrorists scoping out the Trade Center on the eve of the disaster. Neither the mother nor police have revealed any concrete evidence to support this scenario, however.
Or perhaps the missing doctor ventured to the chaos at the Trade Center on Sept. 11 to help those suffering, and when the buildings collapsed Dr. Philip became trapped like so many others.
But the person closest to her says only a positive DNA test on remains pulled from the rubble would make him accept that theory.
"My wife did not work in the World Trade Center and she had no business being there," said Dr. Ron Lieberman, 32, who works at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. "The hope and the effort is she wasn't by the World Trade Center and something else happened to her that we can't explain."
The last time Dr. Lieberman said he saw his wife was around 11:30 a.m. on the day she disappeared. A hospital spokesman at St. Vincent's Medical Center said the last time Dr. Philip came to work was Sept. 9.
Dr. Lieberman described his wife as a gentle and creative woman, someone who is a serious painter of pastels when she is not working as a doctor. Photos of the slender, dark-haired, olive-skinned woman, who is 5 feet 7 inches and weighs 115 pounds, have circulated on fliers and the Internet, even making their way onto network television.
"Anything is possible," her husband said. "The sky is the limit with what the possibilities are."
Relatives worry that mass destruction at the Trade Center initially slowed the police department's progress on the case, allowing the trail to grow cold.
Beyond hiring private investigators, Dr. Lieberman said he went so far as to ask cops to investigate him in the case, if that would speed the probe. "Of course the husband is someone you have to check out, but if you can get past that point, at least they're working," he said.
And Dr. Philip's younger brother outright lied on television, saying she was in the Trade Center, just to get her story out, the husband explained.
"It's a desperate situation and they wouldn't talk to us," Dr. Lieberman said, admitting he encouraged his brother-in-law to make up the story.
For the past two weeks, family members have pressured investigators to follow up on a lead that a shoe saleswoman for Century 21 near the Twin Towers claims she saw Dr. Philip shopping with another Indian woman with short black hair. Oddly, this description does not match any of her friends, according to Dr. Lieberman.
Police would not confirm the existence of this lead. Meanwhile, Dr. Lieberman wants police to compare the description with their list of missing persons to try and find out more about the mystery shopping companion. He said he reviewed surveillance tapes from the store and spotted his wife shopping, but she was alone.
"There's nothing I won't do to find her," Dr. Lieberman said.
Dr. Lieberman and his wife met six years ago through mutual friends, when both were students at Chicago Medical Center. He was from Los Angeles, while she was a native of Kerala, a state at the southernmost part of India. She was brought to America as a 4-year-old with her family, and grew up in Albany.
They were engaged in Florence, Italy, and nearly eloped after visiting the Gardonza Castle outside the medieval in Tuscany. But red-tape sent them back to New York to plan their nuptials -- a ceremony so beautiful it was featured in a wedding magazine.
Dr. Lieberman said he was in the process of planning a surprise trip to the Italian castle for his wife's 32nd birthday on Oct. 7 when she disappeared.
As a married couple the two first lived in the Gramercy Park section of Manhattan, where Dr. Philip completed her first two years as a medical internist at Cabrini Medical Center. In July, she was assigned to do her third year residency in the internal medicine rotation at St. Vincent's, West Brighton, prompting the couple to rent an apartment in Battery Park City. Dr. Lieberman said it was a convenient place live, offering equidistant commutes. He traveled north to work in the emergency room at Jacobi Medical Center, while she hopped a boat to Staten Island.
Dr. Lieberman said he and his wife, despite their hectic schedules, managed to spend a day together on Sept. 9, and the two just lounged around. She talked about buying a winter coat. At one point, she arranged some orchids which he photographed, he recalled.
Dr. Lieberman retraced his wife's activities on the last day he spent with her:
On Monday, Sept. 10, they ate breakfast together in their neighborhood. She was wearing a brown one-piece shirt-dress, buttoned down the front, and brown loafers. She seemed "very happy," he recalled. "I told her I loved her and I gave her a big hug and a kiss. I said, 'I'll see you later tonight.'" They parted for the day, he for work, she to do some shopping.
At about 11:30 that morning, he rode the No. 5 subway train to Jacobi Medical Center. Later that day, around 5:15 p.m., security cameras in Battery Park City captured his wife leaving the couple's apartment, a purse in her hand.
By tracing an American Express credit card, Dr. Lieberman learned that his wife shopped at Century 21, a department store next door to the World Trade Center. She made two purchases in the store, including lingerie, panty hose and shoes. The total amount spent was around $550.
When Dr. He said he was not overly concerned at this point.
The next morning, Sept. 11, when his wife still had not come home, Dr. Lieberman's concerns grew. He went to work at 6:30 a.m., but figured his wife was still likely at her cousin's home.
At 8:45 a.m., the first hijacked jet hits Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. Dr. Lieberman watches the horror unfold on a hospital television and prepares for an onslaught of patients at Jacobi. He called home twice and left messages for his wife on their answering machine.
Later that day, he tried to volunteer at Saint Vincent's Hospital downtown, but is not needed. Dressed in surgical scrubs, he borrows a friend's bike and makes his way to a soot-covered Battery Park City. He finds no evidence that his wife ever returned home. He also learns that she has not spent the night with family or even contacted her mother -- an extremely unusual occurrence because the two are so close. At this point, he is "really getting nervous."
No one has seen or heard from her since.
"It's a nightmare. It's a 24-hour nightmare," said Dr. Lieberman, who cannot afford to live in Battery Park City alone and is planning to move in with his in-laws.
"You just cannot fathom what's going on. This is the hardest thing in my life I've ever had to deal with. This is all I do for the last the last three weeks, just try to figure out where the hell my wife is."

2024.04.29 02:06 Fearless_Bear26 Financially abusive parent coerced me to take out student loans, took the money for himself, and now refusing to pay it back

I'm seeking advice on what to do legally or otherwise.
When I was fresh out of high school my biological father forced me to sign for student loans and had the funds deposited into his account otherwise he would kick me out. For context, I was barely a legal adult at the time and had no other family or any means to survive on my own. He also took away my phone and isolated me. When I did try to leave and seek help, he forced me to stay and live there on his terms. I was scared and confused partly because although he has always been abusive and horrible, he never cared about my schooling until he learned that I wasn't going to the state school I got into or studying what he thought I was gonna study just because he mentioned it one time. Why did he think I would just blindly obey him on such an important decision when he never even wanted to discuss anything? I didn't think he would care as long that I paid rent (or more like being bled dry by him) and looked after my mom and sister. So I was completely blindsided by his outrage and wasn't sure what to do. He had already taken all the money I earned as a minor so I didn't even have any saving to even survive temporarily. I also initially wanted to stay at home and watch over my weak mother and young sister (2 yr old at the time) cause I didn't trust him with them. Thus, I decided to attend community college for a few years and transfer later for the major I wanted. He turned into a complete tyrant due to this and tried to take control of my academic career, sabotaged my plan to transfer, continued to take huge chunks of my income when I started working part-time, took my student loan money and used it to invest for his own gain.
I eventually managed to regain control of my finances and successfully transferred to a 4-year university. However, I now have these debts that I didn't see a dime of and I'm not sure what I can do legally to make him pay back the money he took out under my name. I've asked him many times to pay back these loans but he keeps refusing and pushing it back to the due date. It's now past the due date and I have no other choice but making payments myself or it would start to affect my credits. Is there anything I can do? Do I have any legal stand on this when I did sign it?

MEPs green light new EU fiscal rules • a return to fiscal responsibility after the pandemic era

The landslide vote heralds a return to fiscal responsibility after the pandemic era – but some worry new norms could kill vital green investment

MEPs today (23 April) formally approved new fiscal rules for the EU, brushing aside opposition from trade unions and civil society organisations who fear a return to the austerity era of reduced public spending.
The revision was approved 359-166 with 61 abstentions, after several years in which strict Brussels budget controls were largely abandoned due to the pandemic.
EU budget rules have proved a political battleground within the euro area – with frugal member states such as Germany and the Netherlands wary of encouraging what they see as profligacy in fellow eurozone members such as Greece and Italy.
Governments struck a deal in December on the new proposals after months of wrangling, and a version was agreed with the European Parliament shortly after.
Under the new rules, governments will have to keep budget deficits under 3% of GDP– which critics say leaves member states with a public funding gap worth billions of euros.
Only three EU countries – Denmark, Ireland and Sweden – will be able to meet their estimated green and social investment gaps in 2027, according to a recent study published by the European Trade Union Confederation.
Looking at spending demands such as healthcare, housing and education, ETUC estimates that governments will need an extra €300-420bn a year (2.1-2.9% of EU GDP) annually to meet green and social goals over the next few years.

2024.04.29 01:51 Fearless_Bear26 Financially abusive parent coerced me to take out student loans, took the money for himself, and now refusing to pay it back

I've always felt lost throughout almost my entire life. The older I've gotten, the worse the feeling has been. I have no clue how to navigate anything.
I don't know what else to say. I'm especially lost in career and relationships. I've almost never had a job that didn't feel detrimental to my spiritual health. The only one was doing printing projects at a print shop. I was in school for pre-med, accounting, eventually graduated in psychology. I didn't really feel good about that degree even as I graduated and don't have much desire to pursue the necessary higher education to actually make it a career.
I just don't understand why I'm here or what I should be doing.
I go to work, exercise, focus on my health and then I have absolutely no idea what else to do with my time. I just stare into space, go on walks or look at my phone and feel miserable. No connections or hobbies make me feel good.
I've had lots of hobbies and creative projects over the years. I was a musician for half my life and found some success but I honestly wasn't happy with it at the end of the day. It took succeeding multiple times at multiple music projects and still feeling empty for me to realize I'm not into it.
I also did film, acting, animation, but those usually still left me unfulfilled.
I currently work for a credit union.

2024.04.29 01:47 NotSoSaneExile Debunking Palestinian Lies: 70% of Gaza was Destroyed

Note: This thread was written by creativerealmsmc on IsraelPalestine sub, not me, and all credit to him. Can't cross here and can't link other subs as far as I see so I just copy it.
I routinely come across this claim made by Palestinians and their supporters both here and on other subreddits and I feel it is past time for it to be properly debunked.
According to Al Jazeera, the Government Media Office (which is Hamas's official mouthpiece in Gaza) claimed that "70% of homes in Gaza were destroyed". The claim made by the Hamas run GMO is regularly misquoted in an attempt to further smear Israel and Pro-Palestinians will often change the claim that "70% of houses in Gaza were destroyed" to "70% of Gaza was destroyed".
Regardless, both claims are completely false.
According to a publication by UNITAR (the United Nations Institute for Training and Research) using data acquired by UNOSAT (The United Nations Satellite Centre), as of March 20th 2024, 35% of all buildings in Gaza have been damaged.
I have put the word damaged in bold to emphasize that damaged is not destroyed.
Using the data provided we can calculate the following:
-35% of damaged buildings make up a total of 88,868 structures.
-100% of structures in Gaza is 253,908.57.
-31,198 structures have been destroyed representing 12.2% of structures in Gaza or 57.8% less than is routinely claimed by pro-Palestinians.
-16,908 structures were severely damaged representing 6.6% of structures in Gaza. Even if we combine destroyed and severely damaged structures in Gaza they only make up 18.8% of structures in Gaza and is 51.2% less than is routinely claimed by pro-Palestinians.
-40,762 structures were moderately damaged representing 16% of structures in Gaza. Even if we combine destroyed and severely/moderately damaged structures in Gaza they only make up 34.8% of structures in Gaza and is 35.2% less than is routinely claimed by pro-Palestinians.
As we can see the claim that 70% of Gaza was destroyed is completely false.
As for the claim that 70% of housing units were destroyed, according to a report by the World Bank published on March 29th (page 15), 62% of homes in Gaza were damaged or destroyed which is the equivalent to 290,820 units.
Using their data we can calculate the following:
-62% of destroyed or damaged housing units make up a total of 290,820 units.
-100% of housing units in Gaza is 469,064.52.
-221,023.2 housing units in Gaza representing 47.1% of units in Gaza were destroyed or 22.9% less than is claimed by the Hamas run GMO and parroted by pro-Palestinians.
-112,575.4 housing units in Gaza representing 24% of units in Gaza were partially damaged. If we combine destroyed and partially damaged housing units in Gaza they make up 71.1% of housing units in Gaza.
Based on this it would appear that the Hamas GMO is trying to mislead the public by claiming that partially damaged housing units were actually destroyed in its calculations. It should also be noted that the "70% destroyed housing units" claim was made three months before the World Bank report meaning it would have been even more inaccurate at the time it was made.
While I don't personally trust the UN or World Bank due to their blatant anti-Israel bias, I am using them as sources as they are still significantly more trustworthy than Hamas and they tend to be sources which are unquestionably accepted by pro-Palestinians due to their anti-Israel bias. Hopefully in using sources that pro-Palestinians agree with they will finally stop pushing the lies that I have highlighted here.
Lastly, before parroting talking points that are posted by your favorite media outlets or activist groups you should actually take some time to do some basic research if accuracy and honesty is actually important to you. Everything I have posted here is based off of a combination of two high profile sources and basic math. If even doing that is too much effort to fact check a talking point then it's probably best to find some other topic to opine on.
Edit: Because I know pro-Palestinians will completely ignore the topic of the post and try to derail it rather than apologizing for spreading misinformation I will include the following rule under International Law: Rule 10. Civilian objects are protected against attack, unless and for such time as they are military objectives.
Loss of protection of civilian objects must be read together with the basic rule that only military objectives may be attacked. It follows that when a civilian object is used in such a way that it loses its civilian character and qualifies as a military objective, it is liable to attack. This reasoning can also be found in the Statute of the International Criminal Court, which makes it a war crime to intentionally direct attacks against civilian objects, provided they “are not military objectives”.[1]
Numerous military manuals contain the rule that civilian objects lose their protection against attack when and for such time as they are military objectives.[2] In this context, loss of protection of civilian objects is often referred to in terms of objects being “used for military purposes” or of objects being “used for military action”.[3] These expressions are not incompatible with this rule and, in any case, they are used by States that have accepted the definition of military objectives contained in Rule 8.

2024.04.29 01:42 spacefem how to get started buying bonds?

I used to put my "safe" money in CDs, but I've heard rates will go down and my local credit unions and banks don't offer good rates for the long haul anymore. I can get over 5% if I get their special CDs for 8 or 12 months, but not five years.
Are bonds the answer?
I'd tried investing in bond FUNDS a while back and I didn't see much advantage there compared with plain hold HYSAs - they can go down, the yield is about the same as money markets, can change any day. I found out Fidelity has that screen where we can buy bonds, it looks like any $1000 chunk, under the Fixed Income screen.
Is it like a CD? Can I just say I want a bond that matures in 2029, pick any bond and throw $1000 at it? I'm trying to do research, read what other people do, but it all seems really complicated and I can't tell what's normal.

2024.04.29 01:40 Proud-Reaction-7844 EdFinancial Movement

So hell of a weekend. Was cutting down a tree that was leaning towards the house. It landed just next to the house. Lucky!
Havent seen much good news from EdFinancial but finally saw something after the email to sweet@ed.gov. While I have yet to received a response to my questions I found my loans discharged and my credit lines wiped out. Decided to play the lottery with all this good luck. Hopefully it sticks and on to the refund.
For others for comparison: ITT full class 2018 BD 2 consolidations Was moved from Fedloan Servicing (defunct servicer)
The latter I am sure they are going to try to get me on stating they can't find payment records. Glad I was able to find back statements.
Fingers crossed to see more good news for others that haven't seen any movement!

2024.04.29 01:31 Kapples14 A New Era: 1968 Democratic Presidential Primaries

A New Era: 1968 Democratic Presidential Primaries
Background: After President Reuther's defeat in the 1964 election, many would begin wondering who among the party would come to challenge President Rockefeller. While Vice President LeRoy Collins had initially launched a bid to run for the Democratic nomination in May 1967, he would ultimately drop out several months afterwards due to a lack of support and enthusiasm. Meanwhile, a slew of presidential hopefuls would emerge. The primary became crowded when Senators Henry M. Jackson, Edmund Muskie, and most notably Robert F. Kennedy each announced their respective bids and took up the largest chunks of support from the party. A surprise entry, however, would come when former Alabama governor and infamous segregationist George Wallace announced his decision to exit the Democratic primary and run as a third party candidate in the race.
In what many had expected to be a clear victory for New York Senator and former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, the country would stand in shock and horror when the young frontrunner was assassinated on June of 1968, almost two months before the national convention. With the leading candidate's death, there would begin to be a large sense of chaos within the party leading some to worry that the dysfunction would lead to Rockefeller securing an easy victory. Two weeks after Kennedy's death, however, his campaign manager, former ambassador Channing E. Phillips, would announce his decision to run in place of Kennedy at the national convention. While many questioned the logistics of the matter, DNC Chairman Larry O'Brien would make a public declaration that he would support Phillips' decision and would see that the delegates Kennedy had already won in the primaries would go to Phillips. This would project Phillips into becoming a nation figure as the first black man to become a major contender for the presidency.
By the time the Democrats had gathered towards Chicago's National Amphitheatre, the four major contenders would be Senator Henry M. Jackson of Washington, a former presidential candidate running as a staunch anti-communist liberal with solid support from labor unions and the party's more moderate wing; Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine, a former governor who had built himself as a leader of modern liberalism and environmentalism; the controversial Sam Yorty, a conservative Democrat and mayor of Los Angeles campaigning as a hardline populist and opponent of the civil rights movement; and finally, former Ambassador Channing E. Phillips of Maryland, the progressive successor to the late Robert F. Kennedy who now runs as the underdog-turned-rising star campaigning on racial equality and reform.

Henry Martin Jackson: Senator of Washington (1953-present), Representative for WA-02 (1941-1953), Candidate for President in 1960.
Henry M. Jackson: With years of experience in foreign policy, Senator Jackson has promoted himself as the only candidate in the race who knows how to end the Vietnam War. As one of the only Democratic senators to support the Vietnam War, Jackson has argued that defeating North Vietnam is vital to ensuring the establishment of true democracy and liberal values throughout Asia. Jackson has been well-known for his strong record in supporting civil rights measures, labor unions, social programs, and more recent efforts to work with President Rockefeller in establishing new environmental projects.
Jackson has garnered criticism for his hawkish stances, with some labeling Jackson as a war monger due to his ties to his state's defense industry. While Jackson has fought back against these accusations, this has not stopped his critics from labeling him the "senator from Boeing".
Endorsements: Senator Gaylord Nelson (WI), Senator Warren G. Magnuson (WA), Senator George Smathers (FL), Senator Stephen M. Young (OH), Governor John Connally (TX), Governor Branigin (IN), Frmr Governor Albert Rosellini (WA), Chicago Mayor Richard Dailey (IL), Seattle Mayor Wesley C. Uhlman (WA).

Edmund Sixtus Muskie: Senator from Maine (1959-present), 64th Governor of Maine (1955-1959).
Edmund Muskie: As the most prominent Democrat of Maine, the Northeastern Democrat has made himself a figurehead for reform and liberal policies throughout his political career. Muskie has touted his successes in environmentalism, expanding Maine's social welfare programs, road construction, and bipartisanship during his two terms as governor. While in the Senate, Muskie has focused on major economic reforms, civil rights, readjusting the FBI, and recently became one of the key leaders in the anti-war movement after visiting Vietnam.
Muskie's campaign has drawn a large amount of support from moderate and liberal Democrats, gaining the support of former President Hubert Humphrey, who has campaigned with Muskie throughout the Midwest. In regards to the Vietnam War, Muskie has lambasted President Rockefeller for the continued bombings on North Vietnam.
Endorsements: Frmr President Hubert Humphrey (MN), House Speaker Carl Albert (OK), House Majority Leader Hale Boggs (LA), House Majority Whip Dan Rostenkowski (IL), Senator Russell Long (LA), Senator Walter Mondale (MN), Senator Fred Harris (OK), Senator George McGovern (SD), Governor Kenneth M. Curtis (ME), Governor William Guy (ND), Governor Harold Hughes (IO), Governor Phillip H. Hoff (VT), Bill Moyers (TX), Tallulah Bankhead (NY), Frank Sinatra (NY).

Channing Emery Phillips: Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1961-1965)
Channing E. Phillips of Maryland: After the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, Ambassador Phillips would be pushed to run in the late senator's place, seeking to enact his friend's reform policies if elected. While campaigning, Phillips has ran on Kennedy's platform of racial equality, economic reform, social improvement, and diplomacy-focused foreign policy. Similar to Kennedy, Phillips has pushed back against the anti-war movement, arguing that the only way to end the Vietnam War was to strengthen South Vietnam's military efforts and to push the North Vietnamese forces out of the lower half.
As the first prominent black man to run for the presidency since Frederick Douglas, as well as the notoriety from carrying the torch of the well-known RFK, Phillips has garnered national attention that has many in the Democratic Party considering him to be an important figure in the race. Phillips has faced pushback, however, with some arguing that the liberal ambassador has only been successful due to riding on the back of Kennedy, and that he would only serve as a spoiler candidate that would only leave the primaries more divided.

Endorsements: Frmr President Walter Reuther (MI), Frmr Vice President LeRoy Collins (FL), Frmr First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy (MA), Senator Ted Kennedy (MA), Senator Daniel Inouye (HI), Senator Clinton B. Anderson (NM), Senator Joseph Tydings (MD), Senator Daniel Brewster (MD), Frmr Governor Pat Brown (CA), Cleveland Mayor Carl Stokes (OH), Philadelphia Mayor James Tate (PA), Ethel Kennedy (NY), Julian Bond (GA), Carmen de Lavallade (NY) Philip Johnson (CT), Roberta Peters (NY).

Samuel William Yorty: 37th Mayor of Los Angeles (1961-present), Representative for CA-26 (1953-1955), Representative for CA-14 (1951-1953).
Sam Yorty: Running as the flagbearer of the conservative Democrats, Mayor Yorty has ran a populist and hardline anti-Communist campaign considered by some to be more the Republican Party than as a traditional Democrat. While campaigning, Yorty has focused on moderate civil rights policies, tax cuts, and housing expansion in small cities. Yorty has been embroiled in controversies due to his stances on desegregation and feminism, with his more liberal opponents accusing Yorty of being a political demagogue.
While Yorty has been considered a longshot bid by pundits, as well as written off by his opponents as just a radical populist, the LA mayor has developed a small and vibrant supporting base who seek to push him to the national convention.
Endorsements: Governor Dan Moore (NC), Frmr Governor George Wallace (AL), Senator John Sparkman (AL), Senator Richard Russell Jr. (GA), State House Speaker Jesse M. Unruh (CA), New Hampshire Union Leader publisher William Loeb (NH).

2024.04.29 01:24 Significant_Froyo_79 Bana Witch Hunter Robin Singer

Hello everyone, I did a deep dive into the mystery of the singer Bana, who sang both the opening and ending themes for the Witch Hunter Robin anime, with help from two Redditors. After making a post on this subreddit 2 years ago, a kind Redditor saw my post a year after on the Witch Hunter Robin subreddit asking about the singer, and they gave me a link to The anime news network page. Which showed that the real name of Bana is Chino (高柳) Takayanagi (千野). That website page also has a link to her blog, which is an online diary that dates from 2004 to 2012. After using that information, I then went to the Japanese music subreddit to ask further questions and got help from a knowledgeable person there.
The singer's blog link is still working, and I used Google Chrome to automatically translate the page into English. The last time the singer updated the blog was back in 2012. Based on the information from the Anime News Network page, I believe that the singer is around 45 years old. Her name is Chino Takayanagi, and she is credited in 67 albums and 2 products. That information can be found on the VGMdb website if you look up her real name there. Her aliases are Bana and Chino. Just looking up her name on Google, I found her on the Hello! Project Wiki fandom page that shows more credits she has. Apparently, she also works as a vocalist and frequently appears in the chorus of Hello! Project songs.
On the Nautiljon website, I found this information: Chino Takayanagi started playing the piano at the age of 3. After her 10th birthday, she developed an interest in the stage and performed in numerous shows and plays. At the age of 18, she began dancing, and it was during this time that she discovered her love for singing. In her early twenties, her teacher recognized her singing talent, which led her to participate as a backup singer in songs for various artists and in various commercials.
By searching her name on Google, I saw that she’s on the Last.fm website, where it states that she is a studio singer and songwriter, performs as a backup vocalist, and does commercial jingles. She was also the lead vocalist (referred to as "Chino") of the Japanese indie band Still...You turn me on. The other members are TSUKASA (Tsukasa Fujit), Keiji 'Jizo' Nakamura, and Ami. With the help of a Redditor on the Japanese music subreddit, they managed to come across TSUKASA's website, which hasn't been updated. That website has a page dedicated to the Still...You turn me on band. They used Flash and the Wayback Machine website to find out that they released a mini album that has six songs in 2002 through Parade Corporation and a single in 2004 that has three tracks (titled 傷ついたボクの羽根を広げて). These releases seem to be still available through Tower Records Japan.
You can also find them on the website of Tower Records JP. This band has been on hiatus since 2012. The Redditor also managed to find the single called 傷ついたボクの羽を広げて (Spread my wounded wings) on YouTube. If you're curious about how the six songs from the 2002 mini album sounded, click on the Wayback Machine website link. Once there, look for the navigation link located in the header menu and click on Music. The website will then display four songs from the 2002 mini album, which you can listen to.
On the Still...You turn me on band's website, I clicked to see her profile bio, and I translated it using Google Translate. What I found was that her zodiac sign is Cancer, her favorite car is a Honda Accord, her favorite food is Chili Beans, and her least favorite food is anything that smells fishy. Her favorite color is orange, and she loves colors mixed from non-primary colors. Her favorite artists include Björk, Fiona Apple, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd, Sheryl Crow, Garbage, The Beatles, Portishead, and the Bulgarian Voice. The first CD she bought was Yumi Matsutoya's album "The Gates of Heaven." Her favorite books are poetry by Sakutarō Hagiwara, Grimm fairy tales, and works by Kaori Ekuni. As for movies, her favorites are "Murder in the First" (1995) and "Gladiator." The instruments she uses are a Yamaha piano, a Stafford acoustic guitar, an Elk semi-acoustic guitar, and Sony headphones (model CD900st).
Currently, Chino Takayanagi sings in a band called Harashin.Chino & Friends, whose music can be found on YouTube and various music platforms. They have released an album with 13 songs titled 'TWO PIECES OF SOUL' and an extended play with 5 songs titled 'BLACK POWER'.
When you look up Chino Takayanagi on Apple Music in Canada, you'll find her song used as the opening and ending theme in episode 8 of the Gundam Evolve (OAV) anime, titled 'Soldier.' Additionally, she performed the second opening of the Transformers: Galaxy Force anime, titled Ignition' by CHINO, and collaborated with Shinji Kakijima in the song 'CALL YOU... For the Future of You and Me.' In You're Under Arrest: Full Throttle anime, she also sings in a duo group called AA-CHINO. The second singer's name is Aa (Akane Umezawa). They both sing the anime's opening song, Mighty Body. Her and that singer also sing insert songs Hayaku Koikoi Wrecker-sha, Dareka Honto no Watashi wo Shitte, and Yuuenchi. All these songs have their full versions on Apple Music under the artist name AA-CHINO for this anime. If you can't find Yuenchi, which is a solo song Chino does in the anime, just look up ゆうえんち by CHINO on Apple Music or on Youtube.
Chino Takayanagi also sang in the Uta Kata anime, performing "Donuts House no Miss Lyan" and an insert song in episode 3 called "Kono Natsu wo Kakaete" with Sachiko. Additionally, she sang the Fate/Stay Night (PC) ending theme called "Days" and a song in the L/R: Licensed by Royalty anime called "Breath of the Sky." She also sang the theme song for the film Senrigan (2000), titled "No One Knows Me." Furthermore, she sang "Nishi no Taka" and can be heard in the chorus of "Juu no Ashiato" on the Burst Angel original soundtrack perfect edition, which can be found on YouTube.
I hope that people will find the information I compiled about the singer enjoyable. I've included the references below.
I sincerely thank u/Se_ra_phin_ne from the Japanese Music Subreddit and a deleted Reddit user from the Witch Hunter Robin Subreddit for their help in directing me to the right sources to find information about the singer, especially u/Se_ra_phin_ne, who provided significant assistance. She's truly adept at locating information about the singer and shared helpful links for me to explore. She works for AVO Magazine, a Japan-related entertainment website based in the Netherlands that focuses on Japanese music. They publish reports, reviews, informative articles, and interviews. Seraphinne specifically publishes articles and compiles weekly roundup articles of music videos by Japanese indie artists on that site.
Socials I even found her active official social media accounts, such as her Instagram account, @chinoriddim, her Twitter account, @chibi_chino, and her second band's Facebook in her Twitter bio. She is still making music and writing songs. The band she's in Harashin. Chino& Friends has their own website, Twitter, and Facebook accounts that are active, called Harashin.Chino& Friends and their Instagram account @harachino_official.
The artist's youtube channels are Harashin.Chino&Friends STAY HOME and harashin. chino & friends.
I fixed the links.

Comptroller notice of unpaid personal income taxes?
Hey all, this notice was sent to my home of record from Maryland Comptroller.
So far it seems legit, haven’t determined it to be a scam(yet)
If legit, I’m confused, bc I’ve only ever lived in Maryland as an Active Duty member, while my home of record is Texas. I don’t pay state taxes due to filing as a Texas resident.
I did buy a house in Maryland, and rented it out late last year. I pay Anne arundel country taxes, plus I’ve paid income tax for the now rental property to MD.
I’ll call tomorrow when they open, but could I be missing something here?
