With the distinctive **One Course At A Time** curriculum, Cornell College students immerse themselves in just one academic discipline per three-and-a-half-week block. This focus makes it possible for professors to go beyond the traditional lecture format through extended discussions and labs, all day simulations, and off-campus learning for an afternoon or an entire block without competing with other classes. And students can easily take a block to gain experience through internships.

2024.05.14 10:21 ZhaoBT21 [PC] [2010s] a cooking/restaurant game

Here's a badly drawn picture from what I remember of it ^ (the first level)
Platform : PC
Genre : cooking game where you ran restaurants/cafes
The camera was angled to one top corner of the cafe where you could see the entire place and the counter where customers stopped.
Estimated year of release : probably the late 2000s? I'm not sure but definitely before 2015
Graphics / Art style :
It had a cute cartoon-y type artstyle and it was colourful from what I remember
The customers would stop at the counter and you could see the street outside where people would be walking up and down the side walk (the side walk is where the customers stood) and the road had cars on it I think and you could see the outside go from day to night as time progressed.
One of the restaurants was at the beach and there was another at the ship. In the ship one I remember there was a hanging board in the middle of the room with a fish on it.
I think the menu where u switched restaurant locations, like which one you wanted to go to, was in2d?
Notable characters : I'm pretty sure the game had a story where you inherited the restaurant line from your grandparents or aunt, so those are the only character I remember. You played a girl. The beginning of the game had a cutscene where you got a letter or call from the grandparent/aunt about how they want you take over the chain since they were moving away from the area.
Notable gameplay mechanics :
I remember there being a timer on the top left corner of the screen that showed you how much time you had till closing hours. It was just a ticking clock. I think there was a conveyor that bought buns and stuff to make burgers/sandwiches. There were coffee and (maybe) milkshake machines that you could upgrade and buy new flavors of.
You had to find the Ingredients from the cabinets and stuff and put them together on a plate to serve the customers before they left. The customers had a patience bar I think it was hearts. Sometimes customers would come in groups and sometimes solo.
You upgraded to new restaurants eventually.
Other details : I played this when I was very young and didn't pay attention to the names of what I played. I remember being addicted to this game but now I seriously can't find even a single picture of it anywhere.

You are not recommended to try spells to bring a lover back if you are going through the following: You know that your relationship with your ex is toxic and the best painful option to take in this is to move on. It is not a good choice to be in a relationship that is un-natural, one that is built on witchcraft. The love spark as to be their at all times.
Even the most powerful love spell may not fulfill the things that are required for a real relationship to be in place. Love should be natural and if your partner looses interest in you, its better that you let them follow the heart. If one door closes, expect another open infront of you.
Therefore witchcraft or love spells should not be the ultimate solution to mending a broken heart in a relationship, one has to make love exist naturally by doing the right things to your partner, the things that will recapture the inner feelings of love and affection as you did in the start of the relationship.
Only if and when all has been tried and failed to work that one should order for my love spells that actually work, and indeed this will be the last nail in the coffin to fix your troubled relationship permanently.

2024.05.13 18:52 accelerando1900 my favorite obnoxious customer story

so i used to be a cashier at a cafe. this place had a cafe, all day food menu, indoor and outdoor seating, grab and go premade food, and a little grocery area with some retail items. all of those would check out at my cashier counter.
an older woman comes in at around 8pm (important: we close at 9pm) and she has a charming look - red beret, cute coat, tiny dog. (we don’t allow non-service pets indoors but if someone is clearly planning to sit outside or take stuff to go, it’s not a big issue cuz they’re just briefly in line.) the barista and i are fawning over this little puppy.
first thing she says to me is “can i get a smile and a greeting?” ok :) annoying but whatever. take her order, she has LOTS of questions for us and is very chatty. she tells us her story…. she just moved from california and is so caught off guard by how rude us new englanders are.
so we’re extra peppy and make sure we answer all of her questions, and take all her requests: look things up for her, double bag her groceries, double cup and double lid her dog’s water, oh can you put some ice in that? sure! she seems happy and heads outside to sit. (btw she is YANKING this poor dog around the whole time.)
8:55pm. we close in 5 minutes. she comes back inside. this absolute banger of a conversation ensues.
her, picking up a big couch cushion from our indoor seating area: can i take one of these pillows outside to sit on? those chairs are SO hard!
the barista, who is also my manager: no unfortunately, we close and lock the doors in 5 minutes so we need all of the indoor seating clean and inside.
her: are you kidding me? really? you’re not going to give me a pillow to sit on? those chairs are ROCK HARD! you’re not going to help me?
manager: i’m sorry. if you take it, you wouldn’t be able to bring it back in, because the doors will be locked and we have to have everything inside in 5 minutes.
her: you can just stay and open the door for me! you’ll still be here cleaning in a half hour! (she turns to me.) do you hear this? are you going to help me?
me: she’s my manager, so unfortunately i don’t have a different answer for you.
her: this is what i mean! if i was in san francisco, they would have pulled out a pillow AND blanket for me! you rhode islanders are all so rude!! you know what i call this place? RUDE ISLAND!!!
and then she stormed out and sat there in the dark til we all left.

2024.05.13 17:04 DownbeatSmile Restaurants visited during road trip to Nevada and California

About a month ago, my girlfriend and I went to Vegas for a week, then on a road trip finishing in San Francisco. Here are all the places we went to in our time out there...
Vegas, NV
- We didn't get to try Tarantino's, No Butcher or Crossroads, but heard really good things about them
Bakersfield, CA
Fresno, CA
Modesto, CA
San Francisco, CA
All in all, we ate really well while we were out there, and I'd recommend any of these (exclusively vegan) places, and most of the omni places rated 7 or higher. Hopefully this helps someone out in the future :)

2024.05.13 12:15 missjuliaa08 Level up Your Hustle: 5 Ways to Boost Your Startup

Running a startup is like a constant sprint.
You're fighting for brand recognition, striving to capture leads, and searching for ways to keep customers engaged.
Traditional marketing methods can drain your budget, leaving you wondering about better ways to approach the problem.
With QR codes, there’s no need to fret. They’re a powerful tool waiting to supercharge your startup’s growth.
QR codes have the potential to transform your marketing approach, boost customer engagement, and drive your startup towards success.
So, gear up and prepare to learn more about the innovative ways QR codes can boost your startup businesses.
QR codes and their potential startups
QR codes wield the power to bridge the divide between physical and digital realms. But what exactly are they?
These random-looking black-and-white squares are scannable 2D barcodes that unlock a wealth of digital information when captured by a smartphone camera.
There are two main types of QR codes – static and dynamic.
Static codes are best for basic tasks like sharing contact details or directing users to a specific webpage, but dynamic QR codes are where the real fun begins for startups.
They offer the incredible advantage of flexibility. You can modify the information linked to a dynamic code any time, even after it's been printed.
Furthermore, dynamic codes enable you to track the number of scans, time, location, and devices used to scan, offering valuable insights into what captures your audience's attention.
The best part? Making your own QR codes is a piece of cake. Find the best QR code generator online. Choose the information you want to link the code to, pick a design you want, and download your custom QR code. It's as easy as that!
How do QR codes can boost your startup
Here are five ways QR codes can infuse innovation and efficiency into your marketing strategy:
Amplify brand awareness and engagement
QR codes serve as your compact marketing powerhouse.
Embed them on your cards and marketing materials to swiftly connect potential clients to your website, social media channels, or contact details with a quick scan.
Picture a networking event where you exchange sleek business cards featuring a QR code—just one scan and your potential client gets to delve into your brand story, products, and contact information.
Level up your pop-up shops and events
Pop-up shops and events are excellent for creating buzz, but how do you ensure they leave a lasting impression?
Add QR codes and position them throughout your booth, providing access to extra product information or interactive experiences.
A QR code can reveal a virtual tour of your production process or trigger a playful AR filter, allowing customers to "try on" your clothes virtually. These interactive features inject excitement and foster brand loyalty.
Streamline customer acquisition and lead generation
QR codes are your go-to solution for easy lead capture.
Imagine you're at a trade show, and a potential customer is drawn to your product.
A QR code on your display directs them to a signup form for your email list or loyalty program. This not only streamlines the process but also boosts the chances of getting valuable leads.
Collect customer feedback and reviews using QR code surveys
Customer feedback holds immense value for any startup. QR codes offer a swift and convenient way to conduct feedback surveys.
For instance, a customer who completes their initial purchase from your online store receives a notification containing a QR code directing them to a brief survey regarding their experience.
This valuable feedback enables you to identify areas for enhancement and ensure customer satisfaction.
Offer exclusive discounts and promotions
Who doesn't appreciate a great deal? QR codes can embed exclusive discounts to attract purchases and encourage repeat business.
Just picture the thrill—a quick scan unveils a hidden code for a sweet discount on their next purchase! It's a win-win situation for everyone.
Other creative uses of QR codes for startups
Don't underestimate the power of QR codes! Let's delve into how these versatile squares can transform your startup's approach to customer experience, brand engagement, and sales:
Don't underestimate the power of QR codes! Let's delve into how these versatile squares can transform your startup's approach to customer experience, brand engagement, and sales:
Seamless Wi-Fi access
For startups in the tech space, first impressions carry significant weight, and not being able to quickly provide the WiFi password is a surefire way to leave a bad taste in your potential customers' mouths.
You can now use a wifi QR code in your cafes to offer seamless wifi access. Simply have your customers scan the code with their phones, and presto! They're connected in seconds, all set to enjoy their latte and dominate the internet.
This not only enhances the customer experience but also cultivates a tech-savvy brand image.
Interactive menus
Restaurants and cafes are joining the QR code trend, and it's no surprise why.
Instead of letting paper menus gather dust, place a QR code on each table. A simple scan reveals an interactive digital menu that springs to life on their smartphones.
Picture a customer exploring a menu featuring high-resolution images, detailed descriptions, and even the option to customize their order right through the app.
QR codes transform menus into interactive, captivating, and eco-friendly options—benefiting both your startup and your customers.
Personalized product recommendations
Shopping just got more exciting with QR codes.
You can place a QR code near the entrance of your clothing boutique, where it unlocks a personalized product recommendation engine for your customers.
After a swift scan, the customer receives a curated selection of items tailored to their past purchases, browsing history, or even social media preferences.
This personalized touch fosters a sense of connection and motivates customers to delve deeper into your offerings, ultimately boosting sales and fostering customer loyalty.
Enhance engagement with Interactive QR codes
Don't confine your QR codes to mere squares! Break free from the norm and harness the potential of interactivity.
By incorporating interactive features, you can enhance your QR codes from basic information gateways to captivating experiences that grab attention, enhance brand retention, and foster a stronger bond with your customers.
Let your imagination run wild, delve into the realm of QR codes, and witness your engagement skyrocket!

2024.05.13 08:39 wowelephants My three week experience in Japan - from the perspective of a Vietnamese-Canadian gay solo traveller who loves shopping

Just came back a few days ago from a 3 week trip to Japan. Here was my experience:
To preface:
General overview:
Day 1-3: Tokyo - I landed right on Pride weekend! It was fantastic. I knew only 1 person in Tokyo and I had some friends randomly also in Tokyo the same time I was. We went out for a drag brunch, one of the first of its kind in Japan as it's still a very new concept for the country. Performers were great though. Went to the Shinjuku gay district and had a blast discovering all these cool bars all with different vibes. It's also a great place to meet locals, tourists and immigrants (not just immigrants from Western countries, but from other Asian countries like China, Vietnam, Korea etc. who now live in Japan). There was also a festival for Pride in Yoyogi park and it was crowded and fun. Great to see Tokyo really embracing Pride.
Day 4-10: Based myself in Osaka but went exploring with my Setouchi JR West Pass throughout the week I was in Osaka. Went to Hiroshima and Miyajima Island, Nagoya so I can make my way to Ghibli Park (not a part of JR West so I paid out of pocket for that), and went to Kyoto twice. Overall, I really liked Osaka. I love big cities that are lively and noisy. I don't mind the crowds when I am also shopping in the Dotonbori area. The best part was cutting my day short in Kyoto because I was feeling sick, and then discovering that there was an exclusive Sailor Moon Museum happening in Namba and deciding to get tickets for that. Best unplanned experience that was actually better than Ghibli Park. Also, shopped on Orange Street, one of the best places for fashion lovers. Osaka castle was great but the line up to get in the castle was way too long and the day was super hot. Got to a see a high school Kendo tournament going on though so that was a neat experience!
Day 11-12: Flew to Sapporo from Osaka. It was cold. Windy on the first day. Rainy on the second day. Overall, just cold. Not Canadian Winter cold, but I wish I had a warmer jacket cold. It was the few places that had cherry blossoms left. The Sapporo Beer Museum was really neat and I liked learning about the history of such an iconic brand.
Day 13-21: Back to Tokyo. I am a remote worker and my job doesn't care where I work so I took the opportunity to save some vacation days for a future trip, and just work remotely while exploring Tokyo and surrounding areas. Went to Mt. Fuji for a day and back, did not get to see the mountain as it was really rainy and foggy that day. Wento the lucky cat shrine and it was cute but also busy for such a small shrine thanks to TikTok. Went out to the gay bars two more times and had a blast and met some new people (locals and tourists) who I still keep in contact with on social media. Got a tattoo at one point - LOVE IT. The artist was amazing and so gentle, I hardly felt anything. Did some more shopping in Ginza, Shibuya, Shinjuku and my favourite place - Harajuku! Overall, I really enjoyed Tokyo and my Japan trip as this was my first time.
Time and weather:
Getting around:
Eating:
As much as I loved having a list of some places to eat at, I abandoned it and didn't really care anymore. From high-end restaurants, cafes, local places and even fast-food, everything was delicious. I stopped caring about where I ate, and just took a walk down any street and when I saw a menu I liked, I just went in. Honestly, even Denny's in Japan was amazing (it's a different menu and not like Denny's in Canada).
Shopping experience:
Loved shopping in Japan. I brought one large suitcase that was empty, put a smaller suitcase inside of it and then had my backpack and carry on suitcase. The yen was weaker than CAD, plus if you spend over 5,500 yen, and show them your passport, you'll get the tax off and some stores offer additional discounts for foreign passport holders.
Brands I bought:
A personal view:
I really like Japan and I would go again, but now that I've experienced it, I now know what I like and don't like. As much as everyone raves about Kyoto, I honestly didn't care for it. Inari shrine was great, the climb to the top was great exercise and most people give up not even halfway up so it gets less and less busy. I also like Nishiki market as I love street food in Vietnam so that type of vibe of just trying everything was a great experience. But honestly, Kyoto was a tourist trap (as with most places). Gion district was cute but you definitely won't find locals hanging there unless they work there. The street will be quiet for 10 minutes, then the next set of tour buses will come, 8 taxis will come and the whole experience walking through the street is kind of ruined. Also, it just felt a bit like...Disneyland. Everything was catered to tourists. I'm not someone who even seeks out places where locals are so you can meet locals as I don't really care that much if I meet a tourist or a local, if it happens it happens, but I'm not obsessed with it. But I somehow just got this feeling that Gion has been warped into a thing for tourists who are sold an "authentic, cultural experience". It reminds me of tourist traps in Vietnam, and maybe I only have this view because I've experienced Vietnam too. Perhaps a non-Asian tourist won't see this and to each their own of course. It didn't really help that there were signs saying don't take photos on private streets, and tourists would stand in front of those signs and start taking photos...
Another take is that the Japan that's shown to you on TV shows, dramas and the news is not the Japan you'll experience (unless you're always a part of a tour group). The media portrays Japan as a nation that is ONLY Japanese people, and that you will only meet Japanese people serving you and that despite a low birth rate, immigration is just not a thing in Japan. This is false. I can't count the number of times where I'll order food, have the cashier speak to me in English and Japanese (because I don't know Japanese), sit down and then hear the cashier and other staff speak Vietnamese. It dawned on me that pretty much all the food service staff were Vietnamese in Osaka and Tokyo. Probably more in other areas if I paid attention more. I started speaking Vietnamese back to them and they were surprised that I knew they were Viet. We made some pleasant conversation and for the most part they liked that someone acknowledged that they were Vietnamese. However, one time, one girl told me not to speak Viet to her or she'll get in trouble. The staff are allowed to speak Vietnamese to each other but not to the customer because the boss didn't want people to know that they weren't being served by Japanese people. Some places were more obvious such as people from Nepal, India or Pakistan working there but spoke perfect Japanese. Some places clearly only hired Vietnamese people because they can pass as Japanese. This was more shocking to me than any culture shock I could have experienced as a Canadian.
I think there's a sense of Japan being a rich nation, aligned with the US, that it's better than places like Vietnam. But after spending some time in both countries, I saw that even buildings were built in a similar way. Narrow staircases, no baseboards, sometimes low ceilings, and businesses stacked on top of each. I loved Japan and like I said, I would go again. But I think I would stick to just to Tokyo and Osaka next time. Both are also very touristy but not in a way that it's disguised as anything else. Osaka Dotonbori is a place to shop. People know that. It's extremely crowded, but you're there to shop, not for a cultural experience. If I were to go elsewhere, I would try Okinawa and maybe a rural experience too. But other than that, I'm someone who goes for the shopping and eating experience and the nightlife. I know some people might not agree with my take, as most subs about traveling to Japan always seem to be finding an authentic Japanese experience. But being able to realize that some people serving you aren't Japanese and that most experiences are waterdown and overpriced tourist experiences, you quickly realize that authentic Japanese experiences (as with any country popular with tourists) are hard to come by.
Edit: I replaced the term expat with immigrant for sensitivity.
Edit 2:
Just to provide more details on my experience that contrasts a lot of what you may find on Reddit.
Cleanliness:
Yes, parts of Tokyo and Japan itself is clean. But I have seen some parts of Toyko with garbage on the ground. Osaka is more obviously dirty if you want to put it that way. More garbage on the street, especially at night. My local friend told me that Japanese people are just good at hiding their litter and when they think no one is watching, they do litter.
Homelessness:
I saw homelessness. In Asakusa where my hotel was, there was one homeless lady on the main street near Don Quitos. I also some when you are walking to Shibuya Scramble Square. It's a big city, I'm sure homelessness is an issue there. I saw a TikTok while I was there about homeless runway children in the Shibuya and Shinjuku area.
Shyness/Attitude:
I was always told that many Japanese wouldn't really want to make small talk with you. But honestly it really depends. I had pink hair and had my nails done with a cute fun design on them. So many cashiers, retail people etc. wanted to compliment my nails and tell me how cute they were. Even leaving Japan, as I was going through security, the security lady complimented my nails as I was placing my liquids and computers in a bin. I also carried around a Sailor Moon tote bag I got from the museum and strangers on the street were stopping me to compliment it. I'm a man and I have my nails done, pink hair and a Sailor Moon tote bag. If you give them a reason to talk to you, they will.
Weak yen:
The best part about clubbing is going to the 7-11 near the gay district alleys, buying cheap alcohol, drinking it with your newly made friends, and then going back into the club to dance some more before doing it again 20 minutes later. Alcohol is so cheap there! 450 yen for a can of Jack Daniels and Coke...that's like $2-3 Canadian. We Canadians usually pay $6 or $8 for a can!
More on fashion:
I tried my best to avoid buying brands I could get in North America but sometimes the exchange rate and no tax was too good. Commes Des Garcon Play sneakers in Canada are $200 before tax. Found a design that isn't available in Canada, no tax and the conversion made them $160. Had to get them. Bought a Dior cardholder that's $480 before tax in Canada. No tax and converted price in Japan turned out to be $390. I say definitely look for the Japanese brands you can't get back home because you'll come back with more unique pieces (even if it's a popular, mass product in Japan) but also if you have your eye on designer pieces, chances are the piece is cheaper in Japan. The only thing I found that Hermes and Chanel were the same price or more expensive in Japan. But other brands like Gucci, Dior, Prada, Burberry and Louis Vuitton were cheaper.
Even Uniqlo is cheaper. The viral bag that people like is $25 in Canada. In Japan it's $13. There was a Golden Week sale that made the bags $8 each.
I did avoid some brands like A.P.C or Diesel (which is everywhere in Japan) because despite it being cheaper, I know when there's a sale on SSENSE it's even cheaper than what you could get in Japan.

2024.05.13 02:40 Ok-Collection-3934 Can you reach out to local bakeries to see if they can bake items not on their own menu?

I know it’s highly unlikely, but I’m opening up a cafe soon and have very specific menu items in mind and would like to have the items outsourced. Best case scenario would be to team up with a local baker and have them make everything for my cafe, however I know they have their own menu. Kitchen is too small to do everything in there. Any companies who can do this? Any alternatives? Any and all advise would be greatly appreciated.

2024.05.12 19:17 Neat-Year555 Help Me Choose?

Hello! My 60 days is coming up and I'm trying to choose what sit down options I would like for our off day. Just two of us, me and my sister, 9yo. This will be an off park day before an after hours event, so we'd like to eat at one of the resorts (or Disney Springs, but really want to try out other resorts. We're staying at Riverside). We have the quick service plan, so this will likely be our only sit down experience for the trip.
I'm wavering between two options: book a sit down breakfast for mid morning and have a lazy start to the day before shopping in Disney Springs and then taking a nap before the after hours event (in Hollywood Studios, we plan to arrive right at 7pm) or booking Hoop-De-Doo Review for 4:00pm and going to HS afterwards. I really want to do Hoo-Dee-Doo, but it looks like we'd need to kill time between dinner and getting to HS since their second show is at 6:15. And realistically I'm not sure I'll want a heavier-ish meal before going on rides during the event.
For breakfast, we've narrowed it down to:
Any and all recommendations and advice is appreciated! Thank you <3

2024.05.12 15:41 Kyliee1234 Best Place to get Brunch and Mimosas

My friend really wants to get late brunch and mimosas today and it's hard to tell if the place serves mimosas from their online menu. Mateo’s Cafe & Restaurant and Galvin's were a couple of the choices we were looking at but couldn't tell. If you guys have any brunch places to suggest, I'm all ears!

2024.05.12 10:03 Groomgdill Restaurant Report: Ottawa (Thank you all for the Suggestions)

First off sorry for the wall of text and thank you so much if you take the time to read it So, I've just returned from me and my girlfriend's birthday trip to Ottawa. I asked yall for suggestions a few weeks ago and promised a report on what we did so here goes nothing! Hope yall enjoy, its my first time doing anything like this but I thought it would be fun for some folks in the reddit to see how your suggestions influenced us and stuff!
Follow-up on this post: https://www.reddit.com/OttawaFood/comments/1cd7m0w/looking_for_an_amazing_night/
Day 1: Arrival and chilling in Chinatown/Little Italy
  1. "Lunch" (Tealive): Macarons, a cake in a jar, some hot tea and a shake. Turns out I'm a basic bitch; so much better than the stuff we have in Vancouver in the same price range 7/10
  2. Dinner (Umbrella Burger): Had a poutine, my gf got a burger both solid and well priced, classic high tier fast food. Took quite a bit to get our food but aside from that a standout at the price point 7.5/10
  3. After Dinner (The Hangout): Lovely nerd café with a limited menu but great staff and vibes. Did not get a chance to try their themed dinners which is a shame. Food variety is mid, quality good, service solid. Bonus points for a couple of higher priced but nice desserts thrown into the mix. Owner is a gent! 7/10 as a restaurant but 9/10 vibes, teen me would have fucking lived here
Day 2: War Museum in the Morning, Trans Canada Trail, Tunney's Pasture, Loop Back to Chinatown
  1. Breakfast (Art Is In Bakery): Croque Madame + some pastries and hot teas. Girlfriend was considering moving to Ottawa on the back of the vibes of this place (and the Chinatown/ Little Italy area from last night) 7.5/10
  2. Lunch (Mill Street Brew): Fantastic location, great beer, good service, decent food, a bit pricey. Nice place with nice people serving good pub food for prices that to our (Vancouverite) eyes seemed still acceptable 7/10
  3. Dinner (Bar Lupulus): Just grabbed some charcuterie & cheese (nice selection for a board) and a cocktail. My GF a mocktail & Dessert but I can wholeheartedly say good job Lupulus. Good food, good vibes 8/10
Day 3: Downtown + Parliament Hill/ Downtown (Part 1)
  1. Lunch (Smash Daddy): The burgerest burger to ever burger. All Taste, Few Frills, No Notes 7.5/10
  2. Dinner (OCCO): Cordially ... fuck this place. Good starters and a waitress who worked so bloody hard in spite of being set up to fail (overcrowded as hell). Still could not save mediocre main courses, a brownie that was straight up insulting (at least evidently 1 day old) and ridiculous prices (and we are from Vancouver) 3/10 (and I'm being generous because of that poor waitress)
  3. After Dinner (Rabbit Hole): A good recovery for the day, don't know if I would call it my favorite of the trip (Montreal offered some stiff competition) but definitely my favorite cocktail bar in Ottawa. 8/10
Day 4: Parliament Hill/ Downtown (Part 2: Parliament Visit) then escape the rain and wait for birthday dinner Brunch
  1. (Moulin de Provence): We where just going for snacks since we had a big dinner ahead of us, nothing special but solid. Realized later in the trip it was a chain and not a single shop. Did its job 6/10
  2. Dinner (Atelier): With my work I got to try a couple dozen higher end tasting menus and I have to say this one ranks in the upper half of the scoreboard (if not in the top 10). The journey trough the 40 courses was interesting, well balanced and playful. I especially appreciated the starters while my girlfriend was wowed by the second wave; that said all 6 waves where excellent and making the two more "spectacular" dishes (Nitro Noodles & the Balloon) the bookends of the dinner was the right choice. Service was almost impeccable (a bit of confusion at the start but nothing serious). On the food front prices where well in line with the food offered and would have considered spending even a bit more. In terms of drinks the Cocktail Pairing was a standout among my fine dining experiences, the Wine Pairing was pricy for what you got but inspired, negative note on the non-alcoholic options which my GF did not particularly enjoy. Also to note that the cocktail pairing in spite of being delicious pushes the envelope in terms of ABV and someone who is more of a lightweight than me might end up missing out on the nuances of some dishes just due to the hefty punch packed by the cocktails. They also added a small special plate at the end of the dinner to celebrate our birthday which made our night. absolutely an experience worth having if you are able/ willing to spend the money and time it requires 10/10 in the context of the trip, 8.5/10 in the context of my previous fine dining experiences
Day 5: ByWard Area, University, Ottawa Museum of Nature, loop to Downtown
  1. Brunch (The Clarendon Tavern): Pretty good, we had the arancini appetizers and desserts + some local beers, a decent brunch trough and trough, tbh we did not have that much time available so we sailed trough it pretty quickly, overall I'd say average but we might have missed the standouts of the location 7/10
  2. Dinner (Union Local 613 + Staffroom): I keep falling for secret bars and half the time I get burned. This was not a full on burn but it came close. Cocktails where ok and the vibes of the place pretty good, that said we had a particularly pushy waiter who make the whole thing pretty uncomfortable. In terms of food my Escargot bread thingy was fantastic while my GFs mediocre chicken was saved by the admittedly amazing home made condiments (hot sauce is spectacular). Prices high for what we got so we ended up falling back to downtown 6/10
  3. After Dinner (Stolen Goods): Nice cocktail bar with some snack options, loses itself a bit in the weeds when it comes to it. Too smart for its own good, a smaller list with a bigger focus on a few quality spirits would have been preferred. Felt a bit like its more show than actual product. Considering location and prices I expected a bit more. That said it was still a solid spot to finish the evening 7.5/10
Day 6:
  1. Breakfast (Train Station Cafe'): a scam like all station/ airport food but at least the bocconcini sandwich was ok 4/10
All and all Ottawa had a great food culture and I'm super glad I got to visit the city and try yall's amazing foods. My first internal trip in this country went great and even though its a small part of it it makes me happy to have decided and managed to immigrate here. Wish I had a chance to try more of the shawarmas I heard about and want to try the Riviera eventually
Ps. No pictures because I'm a dumbass and I lost my phone charger at the airport so my pictures are trapped there till I get another charger via amazon (might post later) Pps. Let me know if we missed something big because my GF will be in Montreal for business this winter and I might end up tagging along so I'm eager for a round 2

2024.05.12 08:29 eagersoup I asked a barista if they had matcha lattes and he laughed at me and said no

I went into a new bakery/cafe and noticed they didn’t have a menu anywhere. I wanted a matcha latte so I said to the barista “hi! Do you have matcha lattes?” He immediately laughed at me and said “no” while still chuckling. I was so thrown off. My partner was with me too and we gave each other a look so it wasn’t just in my head/overthinking it. I am so confused lol. Why did he laugh at me for asking that? It was a cafe and I asked if they had a certain drink. What was so laughable about it?

2024.05.11 16:53 Ibsen_On_Screen Ibsen and Wolf

Ibsen stares at the cafe menu, not quite sure what she should get. Wolf, a service dog vest on him, stays behind her, guarding her back.
…Milkshake. And something for Wolf.
The barista soon hands over one strawberry milkshake and a cup with whipped cream for Wolf. After paying, Ibsen sits down by herself, Wolf tucking himself under her seat.
She carefully sets down the whipped cream cup for Wolf.

2024.05.11 14:41 adeathcurse Panicking/crying at buffets - why?

Okay so any time I go to a buffet or a barbecue (basically anywhere that everyone gets their food from a shared source) I feel like I'm going to have a panic attack and I start crying. I think this has been the case for at least my entire adult life (I have some memory of eating at buffets as a child.)
At the moment I'm at a spa resort and I went to get lunch and discovered it was a buffet style situation after I was seated at my table. (Annoyingly it said "a la carte" on the email which I thought meant it was table service with a menu?) I'm now crying in their cafe area. I had to quickly duck out, trying to avoid the staff, because as soon as anyone asks why I'm not eating (or worse, tries to find someone who will make me my own separate food so I can eat) I will go into a full blown meltdown.
Does anyone else have this problem? I don't think it's a cleanliness thing, although I definitely have the sensation of being "repulsed". I'm not a germaphobe or anything though. I know food in the kitchen is probably all served from the same containers but that doesn't bother me at all.
One other thing is that I don't particularly like it if someone touches my food or whatever container my food is in (e.g. if someone came to clean my plate away before I was done with it and only touched the rim of the plate before setting it back down, I wouldn't be able to eat it) but it doesn't give me the same panicky feeling.
Please help! I just want an inkling of where to start addressing this. I've ignored it until now because it doesn't feel like this situation comes up often enough for it to be a problem, but now I've ruined my day at this (very expensive and fancy) resort I think I probably should.
