2024.05.14 23:21 Wearschaoswell Tomato plant help

Every year I buy a few tiny tomato plants from the store and put them in the ground around and behind the shed for shade (New Mexico, 100f+) and they do well. This year is no exception, but in the last 3 days something has eaten 2 right down to the ground! Literally just a nub of the stalk left.
I have 4 left. Can I dig them up and move them or will that kill them (or will the little bugger find them again) or maybe mesh? Will it eat through mesh?
What would you do? I can’t put poison or traps as I have both dogs and cats in the yard too.

2024.05.14 22:16 Mediocre-Anybody-988 North facing front yard in full shade - what perennial to plant?

Hi! I have a North facing home that has frontyard section completely in shade. Can anyone recommend flowering plants I could plant? Looking for perennials and ones that are not too big when fully mature.
Thanks in advance

2024.05.14 21:51 AmbitiousBread Do I need to remove it? Too close to house. Curb growth?

Invasive Siberian Elms are all over my Willamette Valley, Oregon neighborhood, some 3+ stories . This is over two stories, 2 feet from the house (purchased last year), and has roots going all over the yard, including very very close to the foundation. I would have already taken it down but it provides a ton of valuable shade and I don’t want a fast growing conifer in there (not to mention the space to plant next to the stump is small and still close to the house plus I’d need several). Knowing that it will keep growing and the base will keep growing, what’s the move. Do I need to remove? Is there anyway to curb growth? (If there’s any confusion there is a lilac immediately to the right in front).

2024.05.14 20:55 BigB055Man 80% shaded and damp

NW side of my yard is in the shade from my house and two large trees. Barely gets any sunlight. When it rains the ground stays damp days after the rest of my yard has dried out. Right now it's a combination of dirt and what looks like cloveweeds. What is a good grass seed to put down for this type of area. I'm not looking for a lawn that makes the neighbors jealous, just want grass instead of dirt and mud when it rains. I live in the NE

2024.05.14 19:19 SunCritical Should I be worried?

I have a hackberry in my yard that’s growing at a ‘fun’ angle next to some old blacktop. Should I be worried about it falling? I’d hate to fell it because it provides so much shade, but then again I’d hate for it to fall on a car

planting design tips
is it weird to have hostas under one window in the front yard (where arrow is) but not under the other front yard window? will that throw off symmetry and curb appeal? my reason for not planting under the other front window is because of the sun is different and it’s not shaded over there.

2024.05.14 17:31 kyle_loves_kittehs Any tips for fixing this?

Any tips for fixing this?
I have some pretty bad bald areas throughout my lawn, and it’s heavily shaded throughout the day from the tree. I was wanting to seed fescue since the lawn stays nice and cool throughout the day, but I’m not sure how to start considering all the other types of grass in the yard.
Also have water pooling problems throughout the yard as well, so figuring out how to solve that issue would help me tremendously as well.
Any tips/videos/recommendations on how to essentially start this lawn over with fescue, and also figure out my pooling issue would be great!
(Flooded photo is from early March, bald patches are from this morning).

2024.05.14 16:05 Optimal_Doughnut_616 Help for backyard struggles

Hi, looking for some ideas. We live in the northern section of the transition zone. I have an absolute mess of a backyard currently. Years of neglect on my part, 2 huge trees and 2 dogs that spend most of their outside time back there. One tree is a very very large pine tree oak, the other a large evergreen (sorry not sure exact variety).
When we bought the house 10 yrs ago the backyard was OK…certainly not great. But I completely underestimated what it takes to maintain a nice grass yard, and the section under the trees were pretty sparse to begin with.
Now it’s mostly wild violet. Most of the yard is mostly shaded. I’d say 70% almost all the time.
Probably just need complete renovation at this point, but wondering if others have had success growing a nice thick lawn under such shade and in particular a pin oak and dogs etc.
Thanks!!!

2024.05.14 15:04 PGHrex What's going on with my grass?

What's going on with my grass?
Zone 6b. Not sure exactly what type of grass it is. I assume just a mix of cool season grasses. I was mowing last evening and noticed these brownish spots starting to appear. They only seem to be in areas of the yard that get full sun and are the first areas to start to brown in the summer when it's especially hot and dry. Areas that get some shade during the day don't seem to have these spots. We've had a lot of rain here recently but yesterday was warm and sunny. Is it just due to the grass getting hot during the day? Is it something else? Background, I dethatched and aerated in the fall. Also, this year I applied stonewall in late February and Jonathan Green verigreen lawn food about 3 weeks ago. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

2024.05.14 10:39 Agreeable_Wallaby711 First Fractal!

Took a break from my shades series to try a fractal spin. I spun the second single too thin and thought it would be cool to try to compensate a bit by making it a somewhat wrapped yarn. I may have also mathed wrong because I had a whole run of the colors left on that second single🤔. I still really like the way it looks!

2024.05.14 06:03 fisherreshif A question about shade along a privacy fence...

PIC IN COMMENTS
I live in US zone 5b and have recently had a neighbor build a 100' long 7' tall privacy fence on the south side of our property. The fence runs east/west. Before the fence, this area was largely full sun until late afternoon. In the summer the overhead light nearly eliminates any shade as the sun is overhead. The band of shade in the growing season is less than 2' wide. And is narrowest at the solstice.
Im building a 3' wide flower bed along the length of it. Is this effectively full sun? It seems like it's bright, although it is technically shaded to some degree.
I have a bunch of large clumps of naturalized daffodils in an area of the yard that is a PITA to mow around and is a creeping charlie stronghold. I divided several clumps and planted (several thousand?) bulbs along it today and I'm really second guessing myself. I assume they will grow, but maybe not bloom well...? Clematis I planted right next to the fence seem to be loving it fwiw.
Just curious to get experienced Gardener's thoughts about the potential for "really bright, but shaded" areas. Can reflected light and exposure during the day render this area brighter than say shade from a large tree?

2024.05.14 05:53 BRODOOLERINGO Advice on rural crows, please?

I live in a fairly rural area in NE US. I'm on the Canadian border, so pretty northern. I have been trying to get crows to come to my yard since I moved here around a year ago. Most of the land around me is forest and fields that used to be farms, but I'm in a small pocket of a suburb.
I've noticed that up here I've never seen a murder. The most crows I've seen together is two, but more often they seem solitary. I've been told there are ravens as well, but haven't seen any. Today was the first time a crow has found the peanuts sprinkled in my yard before the grackles get to them. I tried to show my daughter and bro got spooked. I closed the shade to give him some privacy. Idk how far away he flew before I pulled it down.
Does anyone have experience with befriending crows around here? I want them to associate my yard with a safe haven. I currently have no pets (I will eventually), but there are some noisy, friendly dogs next door. They don't bark at the birds , but they do at anything else. I'd like the crows to know that my family would like to interact with them. That we're interested in a true friendship. I just can't get enough of them to come around to even be able to introduce myself.
Is there an audio clip that might be a universal call to crows across all crow dialects? I play clips of crows hanging out over a Bluetooth speaker, but it never gets any of them to come around and investigate.
Any help anyone can give is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
UPDATE:
I got to introduce myself today! I'm not sure where they've been watching me from, but they must recognize me. I went out this morning to start the car and when I stepped back in a pair of crows perched in the willow and started scanning the lawn. When I noticed them there I quickly peeled a few oranges for them (I set it the last of the peanuts yesterday), and slowly went out to put them nearby. Then I left to bring my daughter to school.
When I came back they were in a different tree on the other side of the yard. I couldn't tell if they took any of the orange slices. But, one of them came back to the willow to check me out. I peeled another orange and went out again. This time I was able to get within 25 feet of him, slowly set down the new orange and I spoke to him a bit without him getting spooked! They must have been watching this whole time and came early to beat the grackles! I'm gonna need to run by the grocery for more peanuts today.

2024.05.14 05:07 EJC28 Panthers 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation

Round 1, Pick 32 - Xavier Legette, WR, South Carolina:
NFL: Legette, who had a terrific final season at South Carolina, is physical and a big-time vertical threat. This addition should be a big part of Bryce Young’s development in Year 2.
CBS Sports: B+. They have to get weapons for Bryce Young, so landing him makes sense. He is a player who plays physical and runs better than you think. He’s only done it for one year.
ESPN: Coach Dave Canales said it best: Legette brings versatility. The Panthers absolutely fell in love with Legette's ability to make plays all over the field, from catching passes to jet sweeps to kick returns. That versatility at a skill position is something Bryce Young didn't have last season, so this adds a unique weapon to take pressure off the second-year quarterback. He is also big (6-foot-1, 221 pounds) and fast (4.39 40), unlike any other Carolina receiver. He's a perfect fit for what Canales wants to create with the pass and run games.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Can’t believe he is about to fulfill his dream of being picked in the 2nd round.
Round 2, Pick 46 - Jonathon Brooks, RB, Texas:
NFL: Had Brooks not suffered a torn ACL in November, he might have been a first-round pick. He's a shifty, speedy back who can hit the hole and go, and he should be Carolina's starter before long. I thought they might go center here, but Brooks makes sense for a team that lacked offensive juice.
CBS Sports: B-. Fun, three-down RB without much mileage on his legs. Can win between the tackle or on the perimeter and has feature back size. Elusive but not ridiculously in that regard. Fills a need but maybe a touch early. May not be 100% by September.
ESPN: As much as Canales has said he's excited about backs Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders, he obviously believed the running game needed an upgrade. You don't take a back in the second round unless you plan to use him, although Brooks may need time to fully recover from ACL surgery that caused him to miss the final three games last season. He's a playmaker who has a nose for the end zone (10 touchdowns on 187 carries last season), and general manager Dan Morgan said he was looking for guys who can score.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Mixes the milk and cereal in his mouth, one bite and drink at a time.
Round 3, Pick 72 - Trevin Wallace, LB, Kentucky:
NFL: A late addition to my top 100 prospects list, Wallace is a top-tier athlete who finally seemed to find his groove last season -- on special teams but especially on defense. He's capable of covering tight ends and running backs and should impact all four downs, but Wallace is young and could use a redshirt year before he's ready to be featured on defense.
CBS Sports: C. Stocky, springy off-ball LB with speed to the football but one of the least-effective block-defeaters/avoiders I’ve scouted at the position. Not around the football much in coverage but fluid zone drops and has the athleticism to run with TEs. Very good tackler. Just unique strengths/weaknesses.
ESPN: Morgan entered the draft looking for "dawg mentality'' and he got that in Wallace. "Dawg mentality means you don't care if you go hurt somebody,'' Wallace said. "You don't go in there soft. I want you to be scared of me.'' Wallace isn't necessarily a long-term replacement for 30-year-old Shaq Thompson, but his ability to cover the field side-to-side and with speed gives him the potential to do that. Give him a year or so behind Thompson and Josey Jewell and he could prove to be a Day 2 steal.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Enjoys going to the park to make faces at little kids, making them cry.
Round 4, Pick 101 - Ja’Tavion Sanders, TE, Texas:
NFL: Sanders is a fascinating athlete who remains in the developmental stage. He's not a quality blocker yet but has some untapped receiving skill. This is a worthy risk by general manager Dan Morgan and Co. as their hunt for playmakers continues.
CBS Sports: B. Big recruit who produced at Texas and is a smooth mover. Good, not amazing YAC and not a pure speed type. Minimal blocking chops. Reasonable weapon for Bryce Young but lacks burst so will have to get schemed up to get most of his catches in the NFL.
ESPN: Definitely an upgrade at a position that quarterback Young could have used some help from during his rookie season. Canales has spoken highly of Tommy Tremble, but he's not the dynamic pass-catching tight end that Sanders can become. Sanders had 99 receptions in three seasons, tops for a tight end in Texas history. He could pose problems for defenses, like Greg Olsen did during the development of quarterback Cam Newton. This was a no-brainer at this point.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Insists he can distinguish between 50 shades of beige.
Round 5, Pick 157 - Chau Smith-Wade, CB, Washington State:
NFL: Smith-Wade opened eyes with a solid week at the Senior Bowl, consistently showing up around the ball and disrupting passes. His length almost certainly makes him a nickel only on defense, but there's some potential here if CSW develops.
CBS Sports: B+. Agitating CB who played outside but will have a home in the slot in the NFL. Plays more athletically than his testing. Lightning quick feet. Because of his smaller size, he tends to opt for diving tackle attempts more than wrapping up. Speed is a concern but could be masked inside. Up for any challenge.
ESPN: A definite need for depth at a position where injuries have hurt the past few years. Smith-Wade will be a backup and special teamer at best this season. He offers speed (4.54 40) and nose for the football that GM Dan Morgan wants. He's coming off a soft-tissue injury that forced him to miss the final five games and is more of a project at this point. Nickel, where he had two interceptions in the Senior Bowl, may be his future in the NFL.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Thinks being a scrum master sounds kinda cool.
Round 6, Pick 200 - Jaden Crumedy, DT, Mississippi State:
NFL: Being 300-plus pounds and running a sub-5.0 40-yard dash gets you drafted. Crumedy doesn't have sterling production, but his maturity and experience should give him an edge in a fight for a roster spot in Carolina.
CBS Sports: C+. Older, very experienced interior rusher who won from multiple alignments in the SEC and has smooth athletic traits. Production never matched how fluid he is as an athlete and his hands. Needs to have a pass-rush plan more often. Has long stretches of invisibility. Plays hard every snap.
ESPN: This is totally a depth move. His ability to push the pocket is what Carolina will look for out of him in its 3-4 scheme. He likely won't be a threat to start, but he has the flexibility and size (6-4, 301) to play inside or out. Depth behind a solid starting three is key here.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Once put together a 50,000 piece puzzle. It was a picture of a cloud.
Round 7, Pick 240 - Michael Barrett, LB, Michigan:
NFL: Punishing hitter in a sawed-off frame. Barrett's poor length will be tough to overcome, but his forceful play style is inspiring.
CBS Sports: C+. Has a nice blend of traits - - power, burst, coverage skill - - but not always the quickest to read where the ball is going. Quicker than fast and needs to get better beating or avoiding blockers on the way to the football.
ESPN: Barrett is undersized at 5-11, 233 pounds, but he has a nose for the football and brings a physicality to the game that makes up for his lack of size. Barrett should get a chance to contribute immediately, at least on special teams.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Nursed a baby goat back to health after he hit it with a car.

2024.05.14 03:12 annvictory Looking for a reblooming native (SW MI)

Looking for some fun, showy natives that will have blooms throughout the summer months in Michigan. The main area I'm looking at is full sun, West facing, but I'm open to things that would do better in shade/part shade as well for other areas of the yard.

2024.05.14 02:45 Talking_Houseplant What plants should I get?

I moved into my house almost 10 months ago and have yet to do anything with my yard. I have some areas in my backyard that get a lot of water and an area that gets none at all. One area that stays wet is in the shade all the time as well. M front yard would probably be better for flowers but it will require a lot of work before flowers are put in. Any suggestions and tips for a beginner?

2024.05.14 02:21 Farrt1 Shade Sail with 4x4 in Cement Buckets - Thoughts?

I'm about to move into a new place with a 500 square foot back deck that lacks any kind of shade or cover. To combat this, I'm considering installing one or two square shade sails to provide some relief from the sun while grilling or lounging outside. However, since I can't make any permanent modifications to the wooden deck or the surrounding area, I've brainstormed a temporary solution that I'd love to get your thoughts on.
My plan involves setting 4x4 wooden beams into buckets filled with cement, creating sturdy, movable bases. I would then attach heavy-duty anchors at the top of these beams to clip the corners of the shade sails onto. This setup should theoretically allow for the flexibility to move the shades around, perhaps even into the yard if needed.
I have a couple of concerns with this approach, though. My main worry is whether this setup would allow for sufficient tension on the sails to keep them taut and effective. Additionally, I'm unsure about the risk of the whole assembly getting blown over by strong winds.
I'm leaning towards shade sails as they appear to be more cost-effective than constructing a more permanent, rigid structure, which I probably can't install anyway. I would really appreciate any feedback or suggestions on how to improve this setup, or even alternative solutions that might work better.
Thanks in advance for your help!

2024.05.14 01:59 Fable_Darling One Thousand One Hundred And Ninety-Eighth Night

Jesus, what a day. It hailed! I had just finished dinner and was about to write to you when it started to rain. I was about to head out to cover up the plants when it sounded like a barrage of bullets were raining down on us. The hail was certainly the size of bullets. I was half-afraid they were going to break the windows. It gave Peach a fright. I had to rush to find something to cover my head so I could go up to cover the plants. Sadly, there were so casualties. Mother had just bought her jalapeno plants this morning and now, most of them are nothing but twigs. My bell peppers were similarly smashed. The herbs and cherry tomatoes survived decently but nothing was completely unscathed. I rushed to cover when I could and then rushed back inside. Later, when he hail actually stopped. I went back out to bring everything I could inside. I don't have confidence that my flimsy plastic cover would hold out in case there's a second storm.
Now I'm soaked. Again. It rained on and off all day; it would go from sunny and warm to dark and wet in seconds. I didn't trust the weather enough to take my laptop out to write so instead, I spent a few hours washing all the lawn furniture. Those birds, particularly the starlings, have covered everything in their shit. They really are the worst guests. Loud, messy, and demanding. Their lucky they're cute. Once I was done cleaning and the weather got sunny again, Peach wanted out. Again, I didn't trust the sky not to rain, for good reason given the hail, so I didn't write outside. Instead, I sat out on the stoop, listened to music, and watch nature in motion.
We had a lot of little guests in the yard today. The starlings, of course, were as loud and intrusive as any storm, but they weren't the only birds around. There were several pairs of finches swooping through the bushes. A pair of males were fighting while a little female watched, I don't think either of them impressed her. Peach watched a mourning dove on the roof for a few minutes and missed the giant toad hopping onto the lawn. I made sure to tell Mother not to let the dog out. He was a giant, handsome thing. So many shades of green, lightest at the top of his head and darker going down. The little discs on either side of his head, apparently it's called the tympanum, was bright yellow, like mini-suns. Peach eventually spotted him and I was so sure she was going to pounce. I followed her as she stalked closer but luckily, she was actually pursing a tasty but of grass by the fence. She couldn't care less about Mr. Toad. Knowing Cooper would be so kind, I took the toad over to the gate. He was a queer fellow. Very polite. He only hopped away from me once and then politely let me scoop him up without fuss. I didn't even need to use both my hands. He just sat in my palm and stared up at me with that strange, semi-sentient expression animals make when they know you're helping them. He didn't even hop away immediately when I brought my hand to the ground. He sat in my palm for almost a full minute before suddenly springing away. I wouldn't mind seeing him in the backyard again if only I didn't have to worry about Cooper eating him.
Now, there's only one last thing to write to you about. My writing. I wrote last night, just as I said I would, from 10:30p.m. to 12:30 a.m. I have no idea how much I wrote. I was to exhausted to count last night and now, I can't recall what I wrote then and what I wrote the day before. Th chapter still isn't quite done. It is in the annoying stage where I could see myself finishing tonight or maybe it will stake me all week. I hate that stage. May is nearly half over and I still only have four chapters written. I am slowly coming to terms with the fact that I probably won't finish the book before halloween. Some deadlines aren't meant to be met. They inspire, I suppose. They are a light to follow and then walk past when you meet them empty handed. Even if the book isn't finished in October, I'll keep writing past October. I'll write until it's done. I want to finish the book and that is a good enough reason to write everyday, whenever I can bring myself to but there's no point running myself into the ground for a few paragraphs. If I can't finish a chapter one day, I'll finish it the next. The when matters less than the why. I want it written and that is reason enough to keep going.
Wish me luck.
Would you believe, I already wrote this whole letter to you and then wen't to publish it, only for me to realize I didn't tag the subreddit, and then when I do tag the subreddit, the whole letter deletes and I have to write it all over again? That would be infuriating wouldn't it?
Oh, well. What was first written if gone but what I've re-written might be better in some ways. Or worse. At least it is written.
Please don't delete again.
Yours & Mine,
S.O. Skinner

2024.05.14 01:18 gunsofbrixton Struggling with what to plant against the back of my house (zone 10a)

Pictures here
We're re-doing our yard and in the area pictured, we're planning a 3-4 foot bed at the back of our house, and then in front of that a paver patio with a nice big table (we will hang some cafe lights above this space). I'm really struggling with what to plant in the bed! This area is in shade most of the day, and I'd really like something relatively tall (but not too wide to protect the house) to break up the monotonous flat wall and make it all look cozier. My best idea right now is three shrubs like Indian Hawthorn with some groundcover or coral bells below those, but I feel like there's a better way. Open to any and all design ideas!

2024.05.13 23:30 ATDoel Warm season, shade tolerant, SEED!

I live in central Alabama and I need to find a good grass seed that’s shade tolerant that can hold up to moderate (kid and dog) traffic. Our yard is in the middle of the woods, the front section gets 6 hours but the further back you get it drops down to maybe 2.
It’s 11,000 sqft, can’t afford to sod it!
