Strategy for Uber Tristram offline rng

2024.05.14 03:25 Lower_Syllabub5581 Strategy for Uber Tristram offline rng

So so have what I think is a pretty decent offline sp Uber Tristram mostly zeal / paladin… Level 90 Hp 1375 Mana 212 Max block Dex and decent strength around 140 each ( a bit more with gear) Max sacrifice, zeal, fanaticism, holy shield, a bit of smite and other pieces etc Gear guillames, death berserker axe, 4 perfect diamond sacred rondache, duress / treachery, verdungo, raven etc
I think my gear is ok,… not the best but safe and doable… my question is how do you deal with bad rng of mephisto? My first run I broke cos he spawned so many of his mob I died and he then camped the portal… my own fault I guess, but this time he spawned right next to it in a house to the bottom left of the portal. Mostly him stuck in place and spawning more of his mob than ai could kill… couldn’t get to him so I circled around, took out Baal and Diablo, but ran out of rejuvenations and so thought I’d go back via portal and died to too many horror mages… tried to retrieve my body but every auto load I’d die Instantly… gave up so I didn’t lose my gear.
Is it just bad rng that places him there? I’ll key farm and try again but annoying that Baal and Diablo would aggro abs come at you - he just sat there being annoying grrr

2024.05.14 02:45 MarkElf2204 [NA][Zul'jin] Wanderlust is looking for DPS & Healers (7/9M Tues & Thurs 3h/night)

Wanderlust was founded in late BFA and has grown into a large community of friendly gamers with varying skill levels from casual to high key pushers and CE players. Our mythic raid team reached 7/8M VoTI, 7/9M ATSC, and 7/9M in Amirdrassil.
Outside of raid, you can often find a group or two doing keys in our mythic+ voice channels. We made it very easy to ping for the roles you need to form a group and groups fill quickly. We have some pvp'ers in our guild as well. We're a Liquid Women in Warcraft Approved guild. We typically do a heroic skip run on Wednesdays but there hasn't been much interest recently. I expect this to resume in TWW.
Raid Days & Times: Tuesday/Thursday at 9:00 PM-12:00 AM (Eastern)
Current Progression Plan: Heroic clear and proceed into Mythic if we have the numbers - we will likely stop around wall bosses as we'd rather have a good time than bang our heads into a wall and create frustration as WoW shouldn't be a second job, it's for fun at the end of the day.
Recruitment Contact: Vicpops on discord
Raider.io: https://raider.io/guilds/us/zuljin/Wanderlust
Warcraft Logs: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/guild/id/589126
Application: https://forms.gle/FdfaZdY58KpcwZ4Y9
Requirements: LGBTQ+ Friendly. Good attitude, friendly, and non-toxic. Looking to learn and improve their gameplay and take feedback well.
Needs: We're primarily in need of a Rouge currently. All are welcome to apply! Being able to flex roles is always a huge plus.
Filling out the application above is the best way to express interest in joining our guild's mythic raid team or if there are any details I can clarify, reach out to Vicpops on discord or comment here.

2024.05.14 02:40 Shwadwa I have lost my way and don't know what to do next

Apologies for the word salad...
In the scheme of things, I'm pretty new - SHD level 140ish - I had a skill build for a bit and then stumbled into a decent Negotiators Dilemma build. I have worked on a Strikers build and have most of the pieces with St. Elmo's, again decent but not fully optimized.
Challenging is too easy, and Heroic missions are not too bad but a definite challenge. I am coping fine from a DPS perspective, but struggle with no checkpoints on Heroic as I generally only have an hour or two per day.
Where I am going with this, is now that have "OK" builds working, I am lost as to how to efficiently use my time to make them "good". For example: I have been running Jefferson Trade on Heroic last few nights to try and get the Coyote mask but with no luck and then I will try a few floors on Summit but by the time I give up I feel I have achieved nothing.
Should I keep farming gear and brand pieces for optimal rolls before moving on to specific exotic items?
TLDR; how did everyone approach that middle phase of the endgame, trying to get from an OK/decent build to that next stage...

2024.05.14 02:11 Main-Cantaloupe-5417 How do demons compare to mages?

Going off of my last post it’s clear that vampires wouldn’t be able to keep up with mages long term. I also have demon the fallen though and all of its related books. So I got to wondering what would happen if I allowed the other two players to be demons instead, and if that would level things out more and if so how? For reference I have the books but have never been able to run demon, so any help from storytellers who have, or have done zoo games with demons would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

2024.05.14 01:41 arasitar Dawn of the Infinite - Hard Mode - Deathless (Immortal) for 519 loot was a pretty fun challenge - though has some annoyances

I don't think a lot of people realize that Dawn of the Infinite has an additional difficulty above Hard Mode - called Deathless / Immortal.
There is an achievement tracking it: https://www.wowhead.com/achievement=18706/put-that-thing-back-where-it-came-from
The challenge is do all bosses on HM but have no one die from beginning to end (we've seen similar things in previous mega dungeons - Tazavesh and Mechagon). The 'Deathless' twist is four hourglasses that only prevent you from jumping - this isn't really a big deal and on Deos the hourglasses is auto-chucked by a player when they are near a keeper add.
The reward if you haven't done it before is an achievement plus transmogs. Relevant this season is that the final boss loot is upgraded from 509 Hero 3/6 gear to 519 Myth 1/4 gear. Some specs rely on Mirror of Fractured Tomorrows which is BiS for some specs since you can upgrade it all the way to 528.
Also relevant this week is the Dragonflight Dungeon bonus which upgrades Chrono-Lord Deios and drops an additional piece.
The Good
The Bad
In short, liked what I got. Was interesting and different feeling from M+. Looking forward to Blizz's iteration on this system going forward especially with added QoLs.

2024.05.14 01:36 Minimum_Count9758 Solo Sword Bardadin Build - Supreme Martial All Arounder

NOTE: This guide contains a ton of gear and narrative spoilers
Most Sword Bard builds are either focused on either ranged or control + melee/AoE attack styles, and I wanted to explore whether or not it would be possible to take the best of both to make the ultimate martial all around build. This build features Sharpshooter with ranged damage of 20-30 per arrow and GWM + smite damage of 60-120 per single hit by the end game.

Background Theme

The theme for the build is a resisting dark urge, with a desire for redemption to become the champion of Baldurs's Gate. And this theme weaves through the playthrough with items and choices along the journey, for example:

Build Overview

The build centers around a combination of Bard and Paladin, with all three feats, for a Level 8 Sword Bard / Level 4 Oath of Vengeance Paladin. Feats are Shapshooter, Great Weapons Master and Tavern Brawler centered around Nyrulna for throwing + smite melee and the Titanstring bow for ranged giving absolute martial authority under almost all circumstances.
In addition to the primary martial strength, you gain the jack of all trades benefits of being a Bard, including exceptional social skills, relatively high charisma, good persuasion, deception, sleight of hand and stealth.
Early game, expect to play like any other dexterity/charisma bard, with the first 6 level progression on Bard alone.
By the end of Act 1, and with the acquisition of the Gloves of Dexterity in Creche Y'llek,a respec is needed to maximize the benefits of the Titanstring and the build plays like a ranged beast through all of the mid-game.
After level 6 of Bard, we begin to level into Paladin, which opens the door for the character to start building up melee power. Truth be told, I may have respec'ed a few times between levels 6-10 trying a few things on for size, but the most effective strategy mid-game was:
By Act 3 and the late game, and with the acquisition of Nyrulna from the Djinni at the Circus of the Last Days in Rivington, the martial melee power took center stage, with ranged flourishes still very powerful, but no longer the primary attack strategy. And by level 12 and the end game, you have the choice between throwing Nyrulna for AoE or Slashing Flourish for specific ranged attacks.
Philosophically, the build is focused on fast nova damage to overwhelm a larger group by decimating them in the first 2 turns. High movement is key, we're always looking to surprise enemies, and taking advantage of stealth and invisibility to duck in and out of battle for the occasional "oh shit" moment or recharge of bardic inspiration.

Leveling Guide & Feats

As noted earlier, this build really doesn't come online until level 6, more so at level 8+. Prior to that, you're just an average ranged or melee bard, your choice. The end game goal is Level 8 College of Swords Bard / Level 4 Oath of Vengeance (or Oathbreaker) Paladin.
Race choices include Wood Elf, High Elf, Duegar Dwarf, Half Orc, Gnome or Halfling. I've always opted for one of the elves, primary because of movement speed. The fighting style that has evolved for me throughout multiple solo runs now is that you are often fighting in retreat, and movement is key to manage this. If you're playing this as part of a party, movement is less important.
Levels 1-6 - Bard
I recommend a respec as soon as you are able to purchase the Gloves of Dexterity, which for me happens usually around level 4 or 5 somewhere. When you do, choose STR 17, DEX 8, CON 14, INT 8, WIS 10, CHA 16.
Levels 7-8 - Paladin
Levels 9-10 - Bard
We're really just marching towards that second feat here. Choose whatever you want for spells, I like Freedom of Movement, Greater Invisibility, Fear, Hypnotize. For this build, spells are tertiary to ranged and melee damage, so the focus should be on enhancements and prep spells for battle, not in battle casting against enemies.
Levels 11-12 - Paladin
Again, we're marching to our third feat but you can pick up some great Paladin support and control spells like Command, Bless, Protection from Good and Evil, and additional smites.

Gear Guide

Not extensive, but I'll list out the important items I picked up and used along the way, but place an asterisk by absolutely essential items
Early Act 1
Late Act 1
Act 2
Act 3
End Game items

Buffs and Enhancements

Other Misc Tactics and Potions

I used Potion of Speed, Elixir of Bloodlust, Elixir of Viciousness, Invisibility, and various posions/toxins for weapon dipping throughout the game. Bloodlust was easily the most important for a solo run, I tried to put it on after as many long rests as possible, followed closely by speed potions and invisibility on a per battle basis. Buy Hyena Ears and Worg Fangs every time you see them.
I stocked up on tons of scrolls along the way, the most important of which were Haste, Remove Curse, Misty Step, Fireball, Lightning (+Chain), Mirror Image, Invisibility, Cone of Cold or other large AOE high level spells.
FOOTNOTE: Thanks for reading this far. I've played through the game now like 12 times or so, with one successful honor run, and the last 3 of which were solo runs on Tactician. The solo runs were inspired by Friendly Lich and his blade warlock: https://www.reddit.com/BG3Builds/comments/1cmn6sb/a_warlock_pact_of_the_blade_multiclass_for_solo/
This resisting the dark urge run was my favorite playthrough so far, for both the narrative storyline, and how it played thematically into this build, with the choices between good and evil waffling back and forth along the way, ultimately leading to redemption. I think this is the best story arc of BG3.
I've considered a couple of other options for this build that I'd like to experiment with in the future, including ditching one of the feats and adding one level of War Cleric to get Sanctuary and Guidance. I will not lie, I save scummed a few times along the way and Guidance and Sanctuary would have helped me a bunch in those situations. However, it was rewarding to get the full martial with Tavern Brawler on Nyrulna in the end, will report back if I end up tinkering. Suggestions welcome!

2024.05.14 01:28 FrozenSentinel1 Circle of Fortune feedback compilation after 800+ Hours

Hey folks,
I got a lot of positive feedback on the CoF tools / guides I posted here recently and one of the most common asks was for me to compile a list of concerns and issues to help increase visibility of the various pain points CoF players have been experiencing in 1.0.
To avoid this coming across too negative I just want to start by saying I love the shit out of Last Epoch, and haven't had this much fun playing a game for as long as I can remember. I have literally dumped hundreds of hours into Cycle 1 alone, and specifically fell in love with Circle of Fortune as a system that makes solo players feel less penalized for not engaging in trade.
This is purely meant to be constructive feedback, and in no way are my opinions meant to be taken as anything more than just that. I'm just one player out of many many thousands hoping to encourage some open discussion!
I've put my thoughts into video format, as there was a lot to go over. The video has chapters to make it easier to digest;

2024.05.14 00:42 Kooky_Camp1189 Wtf was this run

Okay, so I just got skulls and Hera in the same run today. Did my first ever run and clearly stumbled upon a turbo busted run because I went from barely getting to phase 2 Chronos to stomping him into the ground and only blew a death defiance right before the final strike when I just dove him for the kill for my first ever win.
My core build. I had epic Aphrodite special lvl 2 Rocket Bombard Full Salvo And what I think is the most broken boon in the game… Born Gain.
Dash, attack, omega special (picking up skulls), attack… rinse repeat is dumb broken.
Cherry on top was a duo boon room where I end up with the Hera boon that turns boons heroic the room before Chronos. Went into the fight with heroic Born Gain and lvl 4 Heroic Trusty Shield. AND I also picked up Martial Art… with 9 stacks.
I don’t think there was anything didn’t go my way with this run lmao.
I just unlocked the upgrades for Arcana too, so I can only imagine how much more strong you can be. Man I can’t believe we thought damage was too low a week ago 🤣

2024.05.13 23:32 haunted_balls [Online][Other][EDT][PBP][LGBTQPlus][D20 Go] Seeking replacement player(s) for Curse of Strahd

Hello everyone! I'm seeking 1-2 players to join a heavy roleplay play-by-post Curse of Strahd campaign in progress, replacing a player who is leaving the game.
We've been playing for five months, and the party is nearly level 4 and currently learning about the situation in Vallaki. They've completed the opening act in Barovia Village and received their fortunes from Madame Eva. The party makeup is a ranged archer ballerina and two brawny melee mages (one druid flavored, one wizard flavored).
This would be a great opportunity for someone to join who is already familiar with the start of the game, likely from a previous Curse of Strahd campaign that didn't finish. New characters should join the game with a backstory that has them already heavily motivated to defeat Strahd and motivated to cooperate with the party to do so. I don't want to fumble through a month of 'do I trust them?/do I really want to court this danger?', I'd rather jump right into the game!
Please note we are NOT using D&D 5e for this campaign. We're using my homebrew version of an existing system called D20 go, a narrative-first system that heavily de-emphasizes combat to facilitate the play-by-post format and put roleplay at the front and center. There are no spell slots, no combat resources, no damage dice. There are still rolls to determine the outcome of combat, but the action of combat is entirely narrative. If you prefer a crunchy game, this is not the CoS game for you.
Here's what I'm looking for:
Before applying, please read my original campaign recruitment post here: https://www.reddit.com/pbp/comments/1816woh/onlineotherasynclgbtqd20\_go\_seeking\_mature/
Apply here: https://forms.gle/Q7xs4unKVm1iLPrg8
The spot(s) are not first come, first serve. If the form is still open, I'm still accepting applications. If you applied to the original post in December but want to be considered again, you must re-apply; apologies for the inconvenience! I'll update this post when I've chosen my player(s), but I cannot respond individually to everyone.

2024.05.13 23:22 WarlordofBritannia Dave Dombrowski: A Retrospective in Transactions

On August 18, 2015 the Boston Red Sox hired the late General Manager of the Detroit Tigers, Dave Dombrowski, to run the team, replacing Ben Cherrington. The development focused Cherrington had failed to follow up the Red Sox miracle 2013 season with even winning records in the two years since, though the farm system ranked among the very best in baseball and a wave of prospects had just hit the majors (among them, Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Mookie Betts, and Blake Swihart). Thus, the swapping of Cherington for Dombrowski was rightly interpreted as the Red Sox moving to a more assertive phase, to win now even at the expense of the player development system.
Ironically Dombrowski had been fired by the Tigers because of his belief that the organization’s competitive window had closed and that the team needed to rebuild; the Tigers gave the job to his former assistant who got one more winning season out of their aging core before the inevitabilities became insurmountable. By that time the Red Sox were in the midst of their second straight division crown of three, which climaxed with the single greatest season in franchise history. This is how Dombrowski built that team, as well as the fiscal panic that cost the Red Sox the greatest all around player in franchise history following it:
~2015~
November 13, 2015: Traded Logan Allen, Carlos Asuaje, Javy Guerra and Manuel Margot to the San Diego Padres. Received Craig Kimbrel.
The first major transaction of the Dave Dombrowski era set the pace for the next four years; trading four prospects for a relief pitcher constitutes the classic win-now move. In this case the Red Sox won the deal in both the long and short terms, as only Manuel Margot developed in regular at the major league level, and that at a position where the Red Sox were not in need (center field). Meanwhile Craig Kimbrel made the all-star team in each of his three seasons in Boston, the second of which was one of the greatest relief performances in the game’s history.
December 4, 2015: Signed David Price as a free agent, 217 million dollars over seven years.
At once the most maligned and most underrated move of the Dombrowski era as well as being the biggest, the David Price signing saw the Red Sox for the first time handout a nine figure contract to a free agent pitcher. This was all the more dramatic as they had alienated and traded away their own homegrown southpaw ace (Jon Lester) less than eighteen months before. This was also the first time with the Red Sox that Dave Dombrowski acquired a player he was he previously familiar with, perhaps slightly overpaying for that familiarity. Did we mention that this was largest contract ever given to a pitcher at time, too?
Price had a solid first season in Boston, leading the league in innings pitched with 230 and striking out nearly a man per inning. Nonetheless the first three years of his tenure were marked with mutual hostility towards the ever-ravenous Boston sports media, only alleviated after his fantastic 2018 postseason run. Aging and injuries limited both the quantity and quality of his performance in 2017 and 2019; this trend as well as his 31 million annum salary contributed to owner John Henry’s decision to offload Price even at the cost of Mookie Betts. If only for that last reason alone the David Price signing is one the Red Sox would likely not repeat in hindsight.
December 7, 2015: Traded Jonathan Aro and Wade Miley to the Seattle Mariners. Received Roenis Elías and Carson Smith.
The first of many times Dombrowski would be burned in pursuit of bullpen arms, this deal with Seattle comes down to Wade Miley for Carson Smith. Miley had been signed as a reclamation project by Cherrington before 2015 in the hopes that Miley could serve as a solid mid-rotation option, which he more or less fulfilled with just short of 200 league average innings. Smith on the other hand was coming off his first full season in the majors where he gave the Mariners seventy brilliant innings of high leverage relief pitching (2.31 ERA, 11.8 K/9, and only two home runs allowed).
In a twist of fate, this trade hurt both teams as Smith immediately got injured and only pitched 24 innings in the rest of his career while Miley bombed in Seattle en route to a midseason jettisoning. Yet he rebounded with Baltimore in 2017 and remains an effective if oft-injured starting pitcher to this day, currently with the Milwaukee Brewers.
~2016~
June 10, 2016: Drafted Bobby Dalbec in the 4th round of the 2016 amateur draft.
The once and future Red Sox, Quad A superstar Bobby Dalbec!
July 7, 2016: Traded Wendell Rijo and Aaron Wilkerson to the Milwaukee Brewers. Received Aaron Hill and cash.
With Pablo Sandoval well into his career of eating his way out of Boston, the Red Sox carried a gaping hole at third base from August 2012 to July 2017. One of the short term attempts at a fix featured the acquisition of infielder Aaron Hill, hoping that he and Travis Shaw could platoon for the rest of the 2016 season. The thirty four year old Hill had been decent in Milwaukee in the first half after two bad seasons, but he reverted to that form as soon as he put on a Red Sox uniform, posting a 54 OPS+ in 137 plate appearances. After another terrible eighty plate appearances for the Giants in 2017 Hill was done. On the bright side, the two players Dombrowski gave up for him never amounted to anything.
July 9, 2016: Traded Jose Almonte and Luis Alejandro Basabe to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Received Brad Ziegler.
Ziegler was an accomplished submarine righty who the Red Sox acquired for basically free to get same-sided batters out, a role which he fulfilled to perfection (1.52 ERA in 30 innings). Another clearly won trade for DD.
July 14, 2016: Traded Anderson Espinoza to the San Diego Padres. Received Drew Pomeranz.
At the time, Anderson Espinoza was a teenager in Single A while Drew Pomeranz had appeared to finally unlock his long-salivated over potential with an all-star appearance. Ideally the Padres were hoping Espinoza could eventually develop to that same quality while the Red Sox expected Pomeranz to fill the fourth spot in the rotation. Neither team got what they wanted, at least in 2016 or for most of thereafter; Espinoza immediately went down with a major arm injury which kept him from pitching professionally for five years. Pomeranz himself reverted to his pre-breakout level for the rest of the season, bounced back with a big 2017 (17-6, 3.32 ERA, a strikeout per inning across 174 frames) and then finally was the forgotten man on the 2018 pitching staff due to injuries and ineffectiveness (6.08 ERA in 74 innings, 66 strikeouts to 44 walks). At this point the thirty year old southpaw looked like the quintessential example of TNSTAAPP (There’s No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect), another electric arm who would never match his potential due to injuries and command woes. Anyways, Pomeranz then seemed to resuscitate his career out of the bullpen for the 2019 Brewers and 2020-21 Padres with a sub-2 ERA across 70 innings in those three seasons…before injuries again struck. Though he has not pitched in the majors in three years he remains in the Dodgers minor league system, currently (where else) on the injured list.
December 6, 2016: Traded Victor Diaz, Luis Alexander Basabe, Michael Kopech and Yoán Moncada to the Chicago White Sox. Received Chris Sale.
It’s easy to forget now, but Moncada was not only a can’t miss prospect but one of the three best in all of baseball at the time, and Kopech was another Top 100 type. I’ve covered Kopech in my previous article on Red Sox pitching prospect busts but Moncada’s own failure to reach his ceiling was due more to injuries and a passive approach at the plate. Thus far into his career, Moncada has had two good seasons out of seven and played in at least 130 games in only three. With a strikeout rate of thirty percent, a declining walk rate, little power and less defense, he’s become a fourteen million dollar albatross even when on the field for the White Sox.
Sale, of course, had two Cy Young Award worthy campaigns before injuries and an ill-advised extension soured his final five seasons as a Red Sox. That extension will be discussed further when we come to it, but the trade on its own was inarguably a major victory.
Traded a player to be named later, Josh Pennington, Mauricio Dubón and Travis Shaw to the Milwaukee Brewers. Received Tyler Thornburg. The Boston Red Sox sent Yeison Coca (June 5, 2017) to the Milwaukee Brewers to complete the trade.
Yet another ill-fated trade for a relief pitcher, this time costing the Red Sox heavily in terms of value lost; Shaw went to become an all-star power bat at second and third base for the next two seasons in Milwaukee before his career petered out. Thornburg on the other hand contracted thoracic outlet syndrome from which he never recovered. Even if he had pitched well, the Red Sox could have used Shaw more than any setup man due to Dustin Pedroia’s career ending knee injury.
December 8, 2016: Signed Mitch Moreland as a free agent.
Mitch Moreland was a decent first baseman, but could Dave really not find someone better to play first over the next three years? Even if they cost more than $18.5 million?
December 20, 2016: Traded Clay Buchholz to the Philadelphia Phillies. Received Josh Tobias.
This was more of a psychic relief to Red Sox Nation than anything else, finally alleviating them of the constant confusion over which Bucholz would show up on the mound—the oft-injured and easy to hit version, or the dominating ace? Fittingly Clay’s last three seasons in the majors featured two horrid starts for Philly, sixteen dominating starts in Arizona, and then finally split the difference with a final dozen poor performances as a Blue Jay.
~2017~
June 12, 2017: Drafted Tanner Houck in the 1st round (24th pick) of the 2017 amateur draft.
Houck’s selection constitutes one-third of the total number of draft picks by Dombrowski that made which helped the Red Sox at the major league level (the other two being fourteenth round pick Kutter Crawford in 2016 and fellow first rounder Triston Casas in 2018); inability to find even depth pieces in the draft left the Red Sox farm system utterly void of impact talent by 2018.
June 23, 2017: Selected Doug Fister off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels.
As alluded to in my previous article, veteran GMs tend to reacquire players they were familiar with from previous stops. Fister had been an excellent fourth starter for the Tigers early in the 2010s but by 2017 the end was clearly staring him in the face; a 4.88 ERA in eighteen appearances (fifteen starts) just underlined this inevitable and unenviable conclusion.
July 26, 2017: Traded Shaun Anderson and Gregory Santos to the San Francisco Giants. Received Eduardo Núñez.
Nunez was the short-term solution to Pedroia’s knee injury. He turned out to be the medium-term solution too, as the degenerate condition of the incumbent’s affliction led DD to resign Nunez that winter. While fantastic down the stretch in 2017 this was a stretch of the infielder’s capabilities; Nunez suffered his own knee injuries and posted a remarkable -2.3 WAR as Boston’s primary keystone occupant over the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
July 31, 2017: Traded Gerson Bautista, Jamie Callahan and Stephen Nogosek to the New York Mets. Received Addison Reed.
Another deadline, another deal to reinforce the bullpen. Reed was inconsistent for the Red Sox during his two month stay, which turned out to be the penultimate chapter for his career—a poor 2018 in Minnesota marked the end of his major league career, an astonishingly quick demise even for a reliever.
~2018~
February 26, 2018: Signed J.D. Martinez as a free agent, five years and 110 million dollars.
The best free agent signing of the Dombrowski era, JD provided the power bat the Red Sox sorely lacked after Big Papi’s retirement. In his first and best season in Boston Martinez led the majors in both runs batted in and total bases, placed third in MVP voting, and earned Silver Sluggers at two different positions! He declined linearly from there, but remains a productive member of any team’s lineup to this day; he has spent the last two seasons as the Dodgers and now Mets’ DH, attempting to compensate for declining bat speed by sacrificing contact for power.
March 4, 2018: Signed Ryan Brasier as a free agent.
The quality of Brasier’s pitching is inversely proportional to the quality of the expectations laid upon him. Thus he alternates excellent if limited seasons with ostensibly healthier but more erratic contributions.
March 24, 2018: Traded Deven Marrero to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Received a player to be named later. The Arizona Diamondbacks sent Josh Taylor (May 15, 2018) to the Boston Red Sox to complete the trade.
Deven Marrero was the prototypical good-field/no-hit infielder. Taylor is yet another oft-injured reliever, though he at least gave the Red Sox two solid seasons as the primary southpaw in 2019 and 2021. After missing all of 2022, he was traded to the Royals for Adalberto Mondesi and a teenage infielder named Angel Pierre; while Mondesi knee injuries seem to have ended his career Pierre posted a .415 OBP in rookie ball last year. Keep an eye and ear out for him as he climbs through the minor league ranks.
June 4, 2018: Drafted Triston Casas in the 1st round (26th pick) of the 2018 amateur draft.
Get well soon. There’s only so much Bobby Dalbec a fan can take.
June 28, 2018: Traded Santiago Espinal to the Toronto Blue Jays. Received Steve Pearce and cash.
Moreland had never and would never hit southpaws, but it took until the middle of his second season in Boston for the Red Sox to provide him with a platoon partner. When they finally did so at least they chose one of the very best platoon players in the major leagues in Steve Pearce; Pearce of course would win the World Series MVP that should have gone to Price later that year.
July 25, 2018: Traded Jalen Beeks to the Tampa Bay Rays. Received Nathan Eovaldi.
Even had he not resigned with the team during the offseason, Eovaldi would have earned his place in Red Sox lore for his heroic six inning relief appearance in the World Series. We’ll discuss the extension later, but also note that Beeks is perhaps the only pitcher who the Rays failed to turn into a Cy Young contender. What’s the opposite of adding insult to injury?
July 30, 2018: Traded Ty Buttrey and Williams Jerez to the Los Angeles Angels. Received Ian Kinsler and cash.
With Nunez playing well below replacement level, the Red Sox needed a replacement for the replacement. Kinsler in his penultimate season at least provided a solid glove; just in case the Red Sox also picked up Brandon Phillips.
November 16, 2018: Signed Steve Pearce as a free agent. AND, December 6, 2018: Signed Nathan Eovaldi as a free agent.
These were covertly two of the worst transactions of the Dave Dombrowski era. Refusing to say goodbye to midseason rentals is risky enough, but the amount of money given to Pearce and Eovaldi also baffled reasonable explanations; a thirty-six-year-old platoon hitter at first base is replaceable enough, even when he’s not the weak side of the arrangement. Had Pearce played well and been healthy in 2019, perhaps the six and quarter million would have seemed mostly worth it; instead, he “hit” .180 in twenty nine games before retiring.
Meanwhile, Eovaldi’s lengthy injury history made it a minor miracle that he was healthy enough for the Red Sox during his three months in Boston—bringing him back for four years and sixty-eight million dollars can only be explained as a sentimental move, an excessive reward for that World Series performance. As could have been reasonably expected in December 2018, Nitro Nate only proved worthy of that contract in one out of four seasons; in the other three he was either injured for most of the season, ineffective, or both.
~2019~
March 23, 2019: Extended Chris Sale for five years, 145 million dollars.
It wasn’t the David Price contract that caused the fiscal panic that cost the Red Sox their best player since at least Carl Yastrzemski, not really. The Red Sox could have eaten that sunken cost, had it been the sole albatross on their pitching staff. But, of course, it was only one of three unnecessary contracts that Dave Dombrowski issued to injury-prone starting pitchers on the wrong side of thirty. Sale had already shown long term red flags in 2018, which argued for letting him play out his walk year in 2019 before possibly ponying up the cash to keep him. After all, the Red Sox also had to extend Xander Bogaerts as well as the inestimable Betts; those two would cost at least sixty million a year to retain. Since they were coming off the most dominant single season in franchise history, perhaps now was the best time to let go some of the chief contributors, before the Red Sox tricked themselves into trying to recapture lightning in a bottle…Well, you know what happened in reality.
Between them, Eovaldi, Sale, and Price cost the Red Sox $52 million in 2019 alone, then $67 million in 2020; accounting for other contracts (JBJ’s arbitration rang up $11 million, Bogey was extended for $20 million, and JD was on the books for about $24 million) that was at least $122 million dollars already assigned to six players entering 2020. Assuming a payroll of effectively $200 million, this would have left about thirty million to spend on the other twenty-odd players required to field a team after giving Mookie his presumed megadeal. Turning back to 2019, just like with the Tigers in 2015, Dave couldn’t even make his customary July trade for pitching; the acquisition of Andrew Cashner from the Orioles felt like a low-budget parody of his previous deadline splashes, which of course it was.
There’s the real reason Dave Dombrowski was fired—just as in Detroit his full throttle commitment to a win-now mandate from ownership eventually led to a top-heavy roster and barren farm system. Have fun while you can, Phillies Phans.

1-2

Nouns vs G2.iG

Nouns: 2-1 vs AR, 1-2 vs FLC, 0-2 vs Spirit
G2.iG: 0-2 vs Liquid, 1-2 vs Secret, 2-1 vs AR

The good part for Nouns was Zeus had a Rampage in the 20th minute. The bad part was the rest of the game. Nouns got absolutely destroyed. The Monkey King did not get to play dota. Magnus had MK's number in this one. The supports + Mag absolutely owned the opposition. The Enchantress eventually turned into a 4th core and had a much better impact than anyone on Radiant. This was a game to forget for the North American squad. G2.iG 1-0 Nouns.
https://preview.redd.it/goujnq9mb90d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=b46ad9e653031979139f7108a62e77ff94b92efa
Game 2 was an extension of the first game. Nouns never really looked like they were in the running to win it. The Storm Spirit had a horrible start, back-to-back deaths because of Marci's visit really hampered Copy's game. The Storm was easily controlled and killed throughout this one. Boboka's Marci showed us that it's not only xinQ who can make her look busted as a support. All 3 cores on G2.iG did as they pleased while their counterparts struggled to be of any relevance to the game. I thought Nouns were making good progress as a team but this elimination series shows quite the contrary and now, they bow out disappointingly. G2.iG were dominant across the 2 games and prolonged their tournament lives. G2.iG 2-0 Nouns.

Liquid vs Mouz

Liquid: 2-0 vs G2.iG, 0-2 vs XG, 0-2 vs SR
Mouz: 1-2 vs Aurora, 2-0 vs AR, 0-2 vs BB

Game 1 was a complete destruction. Liquid had an incredible amount of ranged damage. Mouz had a hard time getting to their enemy heroes alive and even when they made it, they were easily disposed of. The last pick Bristleback was a complete non-factor. He lost his lane. He had the most deaths in the game. He was innately countered by Hoodwink. The opponents had so much damage that didn't care if he was broken or not. He couldn't really participate in fights. Mouz were outclassed. Liquid 1-0 Mouz.
https://preview.redd.it/kceumz4yb90d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=4c66aa33116bd33cac2e5fe2a889fd649dd3e24a
Mouz were active early on. Their aggression did get rewarded and they gave themselves a good shot to win the game. But once the game dragged on, it became clear that Liquid had the upper hand. The vision game with traps and rockets favored Liquid. The initiation was better with Clock and Bat. The Pango was heavily countered by the Bloodseeker. Mouz had good healing over time but TA's heavy damage outdid their healing. A lot was on the shoulder of Force's Doom to get in and Doom the right target but that was rarely enough and there was also an Oracle who was ready to save his team. In the end, Mouz fought valiantly but it wasn't enough. Liquid were better and have survived elimination. Liquid 2-0 Mouz.

Secret vs VP

Secret: 0-2 vs GG, 2-1 vs G2.iG, 1-2 vs Boom
VP: 0-2 vs Spirit, 1-2 vs SR, 2-0 vs Heroic
https://preview.redd.it/1lcp1qsic90d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=d64549d474a0e2ca98ed837e21ce958e6591dcd9
Secret's last pick KotL for Kordan did wonders for his team. He was very active and set the tempo but VP kept it close. The scales tipped in the favor of Secret in the 14th minute when an overzealous VP squad fell flat in their attempt at Leshrac's life. VP lost 3 heroes there but Rubick's stolen Glimpse led to another 2 core kills on the map which meant an extended team wipe. Secret would get so much momentum from these events. The introduction of BKBs pre-20 minutes on Muerta and KotL gave VP no chance in the teamfights. Secret made the carry Muerta look viable. With an Io tether and Pierce The Viel used, VP could not stand up and fight, instead, they melted. Secret brought a new flavor to the table and it worked. Secret 1-0 VP.
https://preview.redd.it/gb81946lc90d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=0de9b76879ece210b1c7efef9ccdbb2832023267
Secret went with KotL again and Kordan did his thing early on. He was going around and creating chaos around the map. It felt like a repeat but VP knew better. Naix avoided death and farmed at his pace. VP endured and the rest was the Antares show. The Batrider was incredible in getting in and pulling key targets towards their demise. At the 24th minute, a key Lasso into Arrow pickoff on Weaver unlocked Roshan and the rest of the map. Secret were no longer safe. Ezalor, who wants to be freely moving around the map blasting waves and heroes, no longer had that luxury. The Keeper became the victim of multiple Lasso plays. Secret had no response to the Bat and the rest of VP had no problems taking over. VP 1-1 Secret.
https://preview.redd.it/byt38c5pc90d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=6e1787786d1f08f0e10f231118d08936d1cffe9d
This should be the standard for elimination matches. The game started with VP getting a respectable advantage. Crystallis' Naix was struggling and didn't look like he could recover but the DK and Timbersaw kept the game within reach. After consecutive missteps from VP, Secret took advantage and were able to get all but one racks bot. After getting the 3rd Rosh, Secret finally claimed Mega Creeps at the ~49th minute but it cost them 5 lives. Secret then made multiple attempts at the throne but every time they came close to it, they got burned. Antares' Flaming Lasso was able to drag his targets towards Lina with a Rapier. Secret were scorched at each attempt. The breakthrough finally happened when VP decidedly wanted to make a Boots of Travel play to their Batrider and just brute force their way to killing the Dire's Ancient even through backdoor protection. Secret were able to TP and defend their base. VP lost all their heroes in the process and 2 had no buyback (Lina & Rubick). VP tried to do the same play with the remaining 3 heroes but that was never going to work. Secret live to fight another day while VP are now eliminated. Secret 2-1 VP.

2024.05.13 22:55 sometinsometinsometi All the various ways you can exploit Morrowind.

I finished Morrowind + DLC and I figure this is a good way to end my time and share what I learned. I'm sure there's some I forget or didn't find. Feel free to share.
Have to add this one. 100 Jump 1 second. No slow fall. 100 or 120 (no damage) acrobatics.
I think there's the easy examples. Fortify Intelligence and make Intelligence potions. Drink Intelligence potions. Make more Intelligence potions. Then start making other potions. 125% reflect. Fortify attribute potions. Levitation + Speed. I kind of hate admitting this, but after I was done having fun with super potions, I still used Feather potions and detect enchantment for the rest of the game.
A subcategory is Fortify Fatigue. Most of Morrowind's formulas factory in fatigue so once you fortify fatigue by x5 your maximum and beyond things get crazy. Your jumps get bigger. You move faster. Every attack hits. Every attack against you misses. Every persuasion check works. Once it gets high enough merchants will starting giving you things for 1 gold and trainers will train you for 1.
Then there's calm person. A calmed person will let you do almost anything to them. Drain Personality + Luck. Drain Merchantile for even cheaper training/trading.
Fortify Skill in general. 100% enchanting chance (granted the base formula is unfair even at 100 int, 100 enchant). More effective potions without even requiring Int looping. Turn any trainer into a master trainer with a +60 fort skill on touch.
Drain Attribute. No humanoid can even be a challenge with this. Drain Strength 100 over 1 second stops them from moving. Drain Agility makes ever hit work and knock them down. Drain Intelligence disables any mage. Drain Personality + Luck makes them basically give you money. I never found huge use for Drain Skill, other than drain mercantile for cheap training + trading.
Chameleon. Once you get enough agility, you can start doing almost anything to anyone with 100% chameleon. Stealing obviously. Enemies don't know how to fight back and run away. You can mess with guilds and even cast spells on them without risking expulsion. Even something as small as 20% chameleon lets you easily sneak up on enemies for x4 sneak attacks. Makes assassination easy. Each instance stacks so a 80 chameleon with amulet of shadows and a 20 chameleon lets you access 100 chameleon easy.
Enchanting in General. 100 weakness to magic 1 sec + 100 drain health over 2 seconds in 50 ft is easily accessible once you get a fortify attribute spell. 100 drain strength over 50 ft too. Whatever custom spell lets you take out the 20 cliff racers chasing you. Let's you punch well above your weight when your damage is low or your skill level for magic schools are low. There's also constant enchantments that can more than double your strength, give you 100% chameleon (maybe too strong to be fun), 100% sanctuary, etc. With enchanting it takes some restraint not to make yourself too powerful.

2024.05.13 22:54 Jeznar Module First Impression, Especially for my Group

Module First Impression, Especially for my Group
I now have the module, Vecna: Eve of Ruin, and have been skimming through it. I want to share some of what I have learned as essentially a pre-session 0 info dump to set expectations and hope that it will appeal to all of us.

Overview

The module is 11 chapters, most of them set in different worlds drawn from the history of D&D. A bunch of NPCs from D&D past adventures (not necessarily our adventures) are included which strikes me as an appropriate choice for a 50th anniversary adventure.
The game starts at nominally 10th level. Each chapter grants a level at a milestone which takes the adventure to level 20! That is pretty much amazing for a module. I only know of one other module that reaches level 20 (Dungeon of the Mad Mage) which offered a simple(ish), though very lengthy dungeon crawl.
Vecna is the advertised big bad who must be stopped. That's a classic choice.
https://preview.redd.it/wdz7stjlb90d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c5a2f9c894dc88257a8bc1b7bb7a580367d7d00e

Railroad Style

RAW the campaign relies heavily on a railroad style. The players are largely expected to perform the required tasks in order (and successfully) to play through the material. While content skips are possible, the DM would need to add alternative content or simple hand-wave level ups to provide the PCs with the appropriate abilities to take on the Big Bad.
While railroading is controversial and I think something to minimize when possible, it does strike me as necessary for a module that spans 10 levels of high level play and dips into so many different worlds and is intended to be completed in finite time. Without rails, I have a hard time imagining how the plot end point(s) could be reasonably reached.

Map Style

I've seen a number of people complain about the simple style of the provided maps. They are essentially line drawings in two colors. I've gotten used to seeing beautiful (or at least colorful) maps in published adventures, heck I've made more than a few of the fancy maps myself. I felt a touch of disappointment when I saw the plain maps. Those disappointing maps totally remind me of maps I used to use in published modules, such as I6 Ravenloft, back in the early days of D&D.
People are already busily crafting fancy maps that can be used in place of the pencil drawn maps offered in the module. I'm sure those will help many enjoy the module and make it fit better in VTT environments where the map is crucial. This is a good thing.
For me I like the old time style in a 50th anniversary campaign.

VTT Suitability

I think the campaign is poorly suited to a VTT implementation, at least as provided in the module. The boring maps being one issue and the expansive settings that might be dipped into another. If this thing is played old-school, maybe even with a player acting as a mapper, I feel that I as DM can more easily let the game dip into unintended areas that are created on the spot. Encounters can be resolved on the table top with miniatures and physical dice -- old school style. I think this is a recipe for fun and for my group a huge change from the heavily automated online style of our last campaign.

Fast Leveling

One chapter per level, less than 19 pages of material per level, is a fast pace for a module. This might be 2 to 3 sessions per chaptelevel for my group. That's not a lot of time for players to use shiny new toys before they acquire the next batch of shinies. That could be disappointing, not allowing those abilities to be used more than a very few times.
Still, if a chapter take about 2.5 sessions on average, the campaign will run 28 sessions. Since my group typically plays ever other week, we'll need a year to play through this. That would be fast for us. We have taken closer to three years to plow through Curse of Strahd (with quite a few content additions).

Overall

I think this module looks like a great fit for my group, even though it missed my expectations to some degree. The opportunity to dip into so many classic settings and progress a group from 10 to 20 in perhaps a year of game play. Sign me up!

2024.05.13 21:46 Khenal Dungeon Life 220

Vernew

If she wasn’t already devout towards the Weaver, watching that miracle be cast would have done it. His presence has always had a quiet power to it, a subtle surety of safety, making it easy to forget He is more than able to take a more proactive stance in protecting those He cares about.

She’s not exactly a mage, able to analyze magic, but even she could tell that was something significant. While watching and being a part of that spell made her want to go charging into the depths of the Maw, Leo and Teemo are still sticking to the basics of the plan. The concept of an actual Murphy may be a bit tongue in cheek, but the idea is clear.

“Just because we’ve turned Murphy’s attention on the Maw, doesn’t mean he’s going to fully ignore us. Keep careful, keep safe,” said Teemo, and though Vernew still chafes at not getting to run rampant, the Voice has a point.

And so she sticks with the Crystal Shield followers as they enter the outskirts of Silvervein. Jen is with her, as well as most of the other dwellers, and even some of the healing magmyrm at the back. It’s a pretty intimidating army, in her opinion, even if it’s spread through several tunnels right now. The bulk is moving for the main passage, the one that goes through the settlement’s center. That’s the one that will have the most resistance, most likely. Her group is heading for the cheesemaker, to see what he can do about ensuring as few of the citizenry resists as possible.

So far, it’s going very well, but Vernew refuses to let that lull her into complacency. The worm farm is the official outskirts of the town, and the worm ranchers look on with nervous curiosity as she and the large group enter the cavern.

“Stay on the path,” orders the lead paladin, a grizzled wolfkin in shining plate named Unsil. The others easily follow the order, marching by the farm and only sparing the farmers enough attention to ensure they don’t come running at the group with pitchforks, or whatever a worm rancher would use as a weapon. A manure fork? Do worms make manure, or is it topsoil?

Whatever they make, it’s not important right now. Jen currently looks like a pale dwarf, and she moves towards the fence when she recognizes one of the ranchers. She shouts and waves him forward, which he nervously does.

“Uh… Jen? What’s going on?”

“You felt that magic, yeah?”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if the dead felt it. What was that?!” he almost yells, but reigns himself in as he looks over the gathered army.

“It was aimed at the Maw and its forces. Just hunker down and stay safe. The Maw’s going to be gone before the day’s out.”

“Gone?” he asks incredulously, and eyes the fighters for a few moments, before shrugging. “Well, if you’re going after the Great Maw, and if you cast that thing, it’s not like I can warn them any more than they’ve already been. Get a move on, before someone shows up and your fighting makes a mess of my field!”

Jen chuckles before running back to rejoin us, and the rancher goes to gather his people and his worms.

“It sounded like they’re staying out of it?” asks Unsil, and Jen nods.

“Yeah, I think they will. Anti-Maw sentiment is probably the biggest in this area, thanks to my contact. Once we get to him, he should be able to get us some more locals to help give us legitimacy for not wanting to attack the townsfolk.”

“Then let’s go. The sooner we can get his help, the sooner we can start securing the town.”

Vernew keeps her eyes open on the way to the cheesemaker, though she still doesn’t spot any of the Maw’s forces. Are they focused elsewhere? Maybe they don’t really care too much about the outskirts like this? Maybe the tunnelers are making the Maw pull back to deal with them? Or maybe the Maw was just not ready for a wide attack like this?

Whatever the reason, she’s glad that things are going so smoothly, even as she grows more nervous about the lack of response. The cheesemaker is actually standing outside his cheesery, looking nervous as Vernew’s group approaches.

“Serd, these are some of my allies!” assures Jen, though Serd still looks a bit jumpy. Vernew can’t blame him. He probably doesn’t have a combat class, so any kind of fight would be new to him.

“Did they do… whatever that was?”

Jen grins. “Some of them. That was the opening move of Thedeim. It targets the Maw and its forces. The ordinary people won’t have anything to worry about from it.”

“I hope not. That was…” he trails off before shaking his head. “Sorry. Uh… you want to get to taking over the town, right? Let’s get to the bar. We should be able to get more of my friends there, and they can go with you to prove you’re not after the townsfolk.”

They hurry down the tunnel for the bar, and finally make contact with some of the Maw’s forces. At least, Vernew is pretty sure the group outside the bar are working for the Maw. They spot the group and rush inside before anyone can stop them.

“Inquisitors?!” gasps Serd, confirming Vernew’s hunch.

“Vernew, Jen, slip in the side. We’ll go through the front and keep their attention. If the patrons are still alive, they’re probably hostages now. I need you two to keep them safe, if it’s not too late.”

Jen and Vernew both nod, with Jen’s features shifting back to her changeling form. She places a hand on Vernew’s shoulder. “I’d say this will be weird, but it’s not too far from one of Teemo’s shortcuts. Shadow Step!”

It really does feel like going through one of Teemo’s shortcuts, except she can’t see anything. Thankfully, they soon emerge in an unused bedroom. Though there’s no lights in the room, it’s still somehow brighter than the shortcut was. Jen gives a nod before melting into the shadows, leaving Vernew a few moments to ready herself.

She can do this. It’s another hunt. Don’t get spotted before it’s time to strike. She quietly opens the door and slinks out and down the hall, where she can hear raised voices.

“Invaders! What do we do!”

“Quiet! They’re clearly working with these… sympathizers. They’ll try to negotiate for their allies. We just have to buy time for more people to arrive and catch them by surprise! Get them lined up!”

Vernew carefully makes her way into the main bar area, where she sees a good dozen inquisitors, and a good dozen or so civilians, too. A guy with a lumpy red hat stands centered behind the civilians, and Vernew thinks it must be the Redcap! A few seconds of observation put that fear aside, thankfully. The hat is definitely made of fabric not… people. And he looks more like a dwarf than a tall fey.

That doesn’t make him any less dangerous. He has a holy symbol in his hands, an oval with triangles lining the interior, a toothy maw. It softly glows silver, along with a multitude of blades, each floating at the necks of the hostages.

The door to the outside slowly opens, and Unsil’s voice carries through. “Forces of the Maw! Lay down your arms, and blood will not have to be shed today!”

The Maw priest sneers. “Blood feeds the Great Maw, and we shall see it feast! If you enter, you’ll get to watch it consume these traitors before it consumes you!”

A helmed head peers past the doorway before vanishing, and Vernew would bet her best spear they’re trying to figure out what to do. She doesn’t have much in the way of ideas, either. She could probably skewer the priest before he notices, but she doesn’t know if she can kill him before he can mortally wound the civilians!

Maybe she can take her own hostage? She discards that idea quickly. Even if it did work, it’s just add another layer to the standoff, except without her being able to act freely like she can now.

Act freely? She hasn’t used that on a person before, but it should work. It’s gotten a few of her newer hunters out of a jam before. It’s not like she has any better ideas right now.

“Lone Hunt…” she whispers, and feels the magic take hold of her and the priest. Judging by the way he tenses, he feels it, too. The blades move, but find no purchase on the victims.

“Move! The priest is mine!” shouts Vernew, and havoc erupts in the bar. The shield followers burst in as a blade of shadow swipes at the priest’s neck, but it has no effect, either. She said the priest is hers, and she wasn’t kidding. She doesn’t bother trying to dodge a mace that swings at her as she slips forward, letting it skid along her cheek as her magic enforces her skill. Everyone else can have a brawl, but her and the priest are the only ones who can harm the other, now.

Unfortunately for the priest, he doesn’t know that just yet, and he’s still trying to attack the civilians. She doesn’t trust her obsidian spearhead to pierce his body armor, but she has skills for taking down a strong opponent.

“Hamstring!” she shouts as she stabs the back of his leg, and though the head shatters, it does so after piercing the armor. The priest yelps and falls over, screaming in rage and pain, before his eyes land on the spider.

“Maw Consume You!” he bellows, his symbol flaring and ripping the blades away from the civilians to lash at Vernew. She scurries away, jumping over and off of the various Maw loyalists in her effort to escape the blades. She might not be able to harm them, but she can distract them, and the forces of the Shield take advantage of any openings they can get.

She uses one pair of arms to change the spear head as her other works with some silk, trying to ignore the flashes of pain when the blades find the gaps in her armor and chitin. She powers through it, though she suffers a few more deeper gashes when she has to close back in on the priest.

She gets a loop over the foot of his injured leg before leaping straight up, momentarily avoiding the levitating blades as she takes an angle he wasn’t expecting. He’s quickly in an angle he wasn’t expecting, too, as Vernew hops over a crossbeam in the rafters, where lights were hung. “Snare!” is the priest’s only clue as to what happened, as his world goes upside-down and his leg explodes in pain.

“Piercing Fangs!” he manages to gasp out, two of the larger blades darting towards Vernew. She drops the silk as she feels the two impacts, as well as two sharp pains in her chest.

She grunts, but stays stable on the crossbeam for the moment, focusing on the priest and trying to ignore the damage he just did. “Cornered Beast,” she manages as she hops down from the rafters, putting all her momentum behind the move designed to return at least as much injury as was sustained.

The priest can’t dodge, and can’t even maneuver his blades to intercept her before the obsidian spearhead pierces his armor and his heart. He gasps, trying to hold on for a few more moments, his blades wavering in the air as he tries one last attack, but the light leaves his eyes before he can manage anything.

Vernew slumps to her side, wondering if her armor was always so slick inside, before remembering the two blades stuck in her chest. She looks around the room at the fight, and is glad to see not only the civilians are alright, but the Shield’s people are finishing off the last of the Maw’s.

She closes her eyes, so tired, only barely registering Jen’s shout.

“Medic!”
