2024.05.01 19:57 shakeshakefry Please help me find a film I watched years ago but don’t remember it’s title

Bigla ko nalang naalala na may napanood akong pelikula years ago when I was still a kid during Semana Santa. From what I can remember, the cast is a bunch of kids trying to escape (?) I also remember na the Ibong Adarna is involved with the plot pero ung cast ng Ibong Adarna ay nakapunta sa modern times and the kids were trying their best to find the bird ata ??? May scene pa dun na merong naiputan and naging bato HAHAHA Idk if baka panaginip ko lang ba to or wala ba talagang ganitong film??
Please help… hindi po ako makatulog kakaisip kasi I want to rewatch it.

2024.04.18 22:34 Sapper_87 Andarna Puzzle Theory... Potential Spoilers

Ok, so I just had an epiphany while at work. In addition to said epiphany, I am just working this out in my head.
Ibong Adarna - Is a colorful magical bird in Pilipino Folklore, often associated with what we know as the Phoenix. Both Meaning Hope and Rebirth.
I do not find it coincidence that Andarna's name is awfully close to that of the bird. When you look at artwork of the Pilipino depictions, the bird it is often very colorful. A trait our favorite dragon possesses. In the folklore, it is said the bird has healing powers... Thoughts on our Dragon having such thing? We already know her fire can kill Venin, but what if, between her and Violet we see a team of healing through rebirth? We know Andarna waiting 600 years (I Think) to be born? Waited, meaning she was alive before? Like a Phoenix?
Again just piecing this puzzle together, but thoughts?
Anyone know of the legend? Know it well enough to help piece this together. Maybe I am off the mark, just something to look at.

2024.04.14 03:50 elsheeeeesh Adarna: The Mythical Bird (1997)

So out of curiosity, I did some digging on PH animation and its history since ang underrated niya. Apparently, there was an adaptation of Ibong Adarna, and it's credited as the PH's first animated film. Although this is the case, mukhang wala siyang available na archive or official release. The closest I got to was a few screenshots, trailer and music video. Sayang, kase eto pa naman ang first animated film sa PH, and it's potentially lost media.
Would like to hear your thoughts about this!

2024.02.23 14:25 Decent-Bench-7534 Is the Ibong Adarna story imported or does it have a native origin?

I've always wondered about this. On the one hand, Ibong Adarna obviously has a "Western" setting, and the word "Adarna" itself doesn't look like it comes from Philippine languages. But on the other hand, there doesn't seem to be a foreign story that could have served as its basis (If I remember correctly, Fansler and Eugenio identify tropes or themes in the Adarna story that are shared by foreign fairy tales but don't identify a specific story where it could have come from). Also, the Adarna shares common themes with Filipino epics. E.g., the hero's quest for multiple wives from different parts of the universe (underworld, skyworld, etc.). There are also other native/non-western elements like the dayap used by Don Juan to keep himself awake. The word "manusia" is also mentioned twice in the korido, which is interesting because it's a Malay/Sanskirt word for "man" that I don't think I've ever seen in Tagalog literature.
In my (wishful thinking) headcanon, the Ibong Adarna is a heavily Westernized version of an original but now lost Tagalog epic, haha. But that's just me.
Anyway, thoughts?

Hi po, Chers and Students!
Thank you poooo!

Ako, may nakalimutan akong malalim na tagalog ng patay. Sobrang lalim niya parang pang pre colonial yung word nito. I think mahabulahay o mahubalahay??

2024.02.03 06:39 littlegordonramsay China's Exclusive pops are better than Philippines's

This is just my opinion, but in terms of country-based pops, I realized China's Exclusive pops are better than Philippines'.
From China, there are several pops based on Chinese culture/traditions: Journey to the West, Three Kingdoms, Beijing Opera, Good Luck (Fu Lu Shou, Lucky Dragon, Wu Shi, Auspicious Beast), Moon Rabbit, etc.
From Philippines, there several pops and Limited Editions based on the Jollibee company (Jollibee, Hetty, Champ, with different variants), a boxer (Manny Pacquiao), singer (Jose Mari Chan), school mascots (Ateneo, La Salle), comic book characters (Darna, Trese), mythological creatures (aswang, siyokoy), Mickey Mouse and Freddy Funko in barong tagalog. I think Philippines needs pops based on its culture. e.g. Malakas at Maganda, Ibong Adarna, Maria Makiling, characters from Noli me Tangere or El Filibusterismo, etc.
Are there also other pops from other countries?

2023.12.24 15:11 tistimetotimetravel Track Breakdown: Stick Figgas - Parisukat

Chorus:
Itong mundong hugis parisukat
Creative lines from Ron Henley's verse:
Still, Ron Henley is at his most interesting kapag open to artistic interpretation ang material niya.
- Possible references, first to the idiom "handed to you on a silver platter", and then to the need for camera surveillance systems in public and private security that are now more prevalent than ever.
Dahil sa context ng kanta, nabigyan ni Ron ng sarili niyang meaning yung phrase, specifically pertaining to the human experience of uncovering secrets that were previously kept hidden (hence the use of the phrase tiyak lulutang).
Creative lines from Loonie's verse:
- It's such a Loonie thing to coin a new term just to express what he wants to say. "Sarilitrato". I wish I thought of that. He mentions the demand for all sorts of gadgets, how selfies came to be accepted as a normal thing, and also the popularity of social media and the mundane things that some people choose to do with it.
Alam mo bang alam nila ang buong pangalan mo kumpleto
Araw ng kapanganakan trabaho mo pati sweldo
Kasi trenta porsyentong rason kaya 'to inimbento
Para madali lang tayong matiktikan ng gobyerno
- Ang ganda ng laro ni Loonie sa alam mo ba/alam nila, which is specifically called anaphora (the repetition of words or phrases in a group of sentences). Also, Loonie tries to illustrate the perspective of people who are skeptical of or even paranoid towards the government's mandates that require citizens to provide their personal information.
Kalayaan sa dayuhan ay pilit na pinaglaban
Para lamang maging alipin ng kahirapan
- Loonie says the country is figuratively still under an occupation, this time not by a tangible foreign country, but by the intangible, ever-present effects of poverty.
- Playful way of demonstrating the illusion of choice.
- Utak/puso and bagsak/pulot word associations, plus a very creative yet cynical way of describing "freedom" when you are part of a larger whole that expects you to behave a certain way
Kat Agarrado's verse:
- Sulok/mundo/laya/labas-pasok/bilanggo/bilangguan train of thought
Ron Henley + Loonie verse:
- Kayod/gata/piga, double meaning sa kayod, relating it to both labor and cooking
- Salita/gawa word association
- Poetic way of saying that you can't escape the system, tapos naitawid pa yung parisukat (kwarto/kulungan) papunta sa parihaba (ataul). Napakaastig at napaka-concise na kanta overall.
Notes on the music/production itself
- This track, along with all of Realistick, is such a seamless integration of rap lyrics and rock band music. I haven't heard enough hiphop to know how many times this genre fusion has been done and how successful each attempt has been so far, but I'm pretty sure that if I come across anything similar I will always be comparing it to this song.
- DJ B-Boy Garcia's scratches manage to reinforce the hiphop part of this track's identity without feeling out of place or going overboard. The synth popping up at the 2nd & 3rd chorus + the 3rd verse onwards also gives the track an alternative rock/electronic flavor.

2023.12.20 18:56 Whatevs1dc There's reasons why Raya was forgotten and Encanto was loved

Late on this whole thing but tbh I need to get these things out my head, especially since Raya was supposed to "present" my culture but ended up falling flat while Encanto actually pleased me
So for some context I'm Filipino, if you know the history of The Philippines it would be clear why I felt more for Encanto than Raya, though Raya actually did directly get inspiration from Filipino culture, it got drowned out by the rest of the Southeast Asian culture they merged it with, I don't see my culture in the movie, it doesn't feel like my culture but rather a culture of a neighboring country, Southeast Asia is a very diverse place, in The Philippines alone there's 180+ different ethnic groups, imagine how many more there is in the rest of Southeast Asia! Though we definitely have our similarities, we also have our differences and that shouldn't be ignored, instead of doing that, what happened was it all got merged together and that's just ridiculous
Then there's Encanto, though the movie was based on Colombian culture, it felt more alike to Filipino culture than Raya, the clothing, the architecture, the traditions, I saw more similarities there than Raya, obviously it still feels distinctly Latin American but really, it's just more similar, heck the title itself "Encanto" is already something Filipinos know but it's spelled as "Engkanto" for us while "Raya" on the other hand, I mean I could see someone in The Philippines having that name but it's very rare, a long with that, dragon legends aren't really that big in The Philippines, a mythical bird would've been better as bird legends are something most Filipinos know like Ibong Adarna
Along with that I've heard of other Southeast Asians who have the same view where they didn't feel the culture of Raya as their own and I guess that's why Encanto did well and Raya did not, Encanto was direct in what culture it was trying to present and had a following of people who could actually relate to it, Raya failed to do that by merging multiple cultures together into one and because of that nobody truly relates to the movie cause it feels more of a culture from a neighbor than their own
Raya was decent for what it was but not great for what it was supposed to be.
Edit: Ok some past movies did the same/similar mistakes, so yeah it isn't like the movie had no chance as soon as people found out it's culturally vague, there's other issues with Raya that I should've added in that likely contributed in it's downfall like how Raya didn't have songs like most Disney movies (unlike Encanto which had songs that reached people who didn't watch the movie) I've also heard some people complain that Raya also had issues with character development/build, we don't really get much with Raya's group unlike Mirabel's family (though debatable on some characters) I feel as a watcher you could even connect with the soldiers in Mulan better than any of those in Raya's group, heck those 3 soldiers were more memorable than Raya's own animal sidekick and I think a solution to that would have been something I heard some other people say where a smaller group would've been better in Raya so we could focus and build on those fewespecific characters more + they don't sacrifice the action based story for more screen time on each character
Moral of the story about "trusting people" was also badly executed, Raya has trusted people and what does she get? People die, including her father by being turned into statues! She trusts again and what does she get? Sisu's death and pretty much the end of the world! It's understandable why she wouldn't trust people but the movie keeps trying to push the message of "trust" while showing why you shouldn't trust Encanto on the other hand delivered their message of "generational trauma" much better
Also forgot to say, I actually liked the fight scenes.

New card deck
With the new American folklore card, I created this deck. Always loved goatman so easy decision for me to go 9/9 with mythical creatures. Anybody got any better ideas of cards can replace? Played in casual and hits some good power, but only against bots so not sure how well it can compete. The only issue I have is wendigo and huldufolk are both hold cards so depending on draw, sometimes need to play one. Not really played these collections so maybe some other cards in there that would work better?
