Warm, fuzzy, sometimes tangled. Due to the holiday season, it may take up to 48 hours for (1) a post to be approved/ reviewed (2) response to modmail/from a moderator. Regarding the API/blackout we're open again but also watching, listening, thinking hard. Whatever happens needs to happen thoughtfully. Please keep being excellent to each other.

2024.05.14 18:20 BalancedScales10 Question About a Designer

Does anybody know if KWknitsWlove does crochet or knitting? Based on their screen/shop name, I'd usually say knitting, but the pictures of the shawls look crocheted. I looked at the item detail section on a few listings, but it doesn't seem to say, and I would like to know before I purchase as a pattern, as it would not be returnable if it does turn out to be a knitting pattern.

2024.05.14 17:35 Neither-Meeting-4491 New sweater for a friend!

New sweater for a friend!
Any one else stress knit? I love making clothes for my teddy, and due to recent events I figured now would be the best time to make him a winter sweateršŸ˜…šŸ˜šŸ™ˆ I did not follow a pattern, just made 4 sqaures and stitched them together. I am still not great with ribbing either, so I used garter stitch, the rest is stockinette.

2024.05.14 17:27 Dianouille_ Which stretch fabric for a wedding guest outfit?

Hello!
I am a guest at a wedding in September, and I am planning to make a top and pants outfit. The pattern Iā€™d like to make, the Blossom crop top from Boo and Lu, calls for "knit fabric with at least 50% 4-way stretch (e.g., cotton lycra, single or double brushed poly, lightweight French terry, etc.)".
I have never worked with stretch fabric before, and I worry that it might look too sporty or casual. Which stretch fabric should I choose to achieve an elegant look? Also, how do you determine how much a fabric stretches when choosing it in a store?
Thanks!

2024.05.14 16:44 equalmind3 My 6 day star blanket

My 6 day star blanket
I just finished my 6 day star blanket (pattern by Betty McKnit) using KnitPal ombrĆ© encore yarn in the color white lavender (from Amazon). I also added some white tassels to each of the points for an added bit of flair. This is my first ever completed blanket. Itā€™s about queen/full size width. Iā€™m so proud! Iā€™m obsessed.

2024.05.14 15:17 penninewton Finally finished

Finally finished
I really like to think I am a good knitter. Alas I really am not. I get so frustrated with the speed and canā€™t knit a sock to save my life.
My daughterā€™s best friend got married almost two years ago and I wanted to make them a throw. I tried four different knitting patterns and got four separate bunches of yarn and alas I scrapped them all (and yes I know this is a crochet sub).
I was scrolling through Ravelry patterns and one caught my eye - I ordered the yarn and maybe a month later, the finished product. I love the ombrĆ© and and happy with how it turned out ā€” why would I ever stray from crochet?

2024.05.14 13:00 bowtome_peasant Help with fluffy ducky

Hi, I am looking to make this knitted duck toy that I can't find a pattern for anywhere. I am willing to pay whatever is requested for the pattern, I would just really love to knit this myself and have no idea how to go about it. Let me know if you are interested!

Managed to finish the baby blanket before she arrived!
Hi everyone,
I started this after my maternity leave started and was not sure whether I can make it in time. But luckily with a chunky yarn and nr 9 needles it grew rather fast and was done 1 week before the baby was born. šŸ‘£
Here is the pattern https://ravel.me/strawberries-in-brioche Which I somehow managed to follow (haha I'm really bad at following instructions šŸ˜… have the same problem with cooking from a recipe). I had chosen a super fluffy chunky Alpaca yarn (Drops Wish nr 14 and 15) before I picked this pattern. The end result is super warm and fluffy too. It is quite big because I panicked midway and added 4 extra ball of yarn šŸ˜ so the baby can use it next winter as well. Blocking was a bit of a challenge though so it's not perfectly square. I'm happy with the end result though. I love knitting brioche and brioche stitch with a fluffy yarn is a match made in heaven!

2024.05.14 12:27 Flamewakerr To EA and whom it may concern, sincerely, from one of us

Hey everyone, amidst the thousands of rants, in light of Nick's movement, I think it's time for me to say something, maybe no one cares, I don't have a major platform to get my word out, but I still think that it's good to get these things out here and perhaps the best thing all of this can do is change the way we perceive the game as a player base. This will be long, so those of you willing to, bear with me.
Let me tell you something from a point of view of someone who loved the game for a long time. We're a bunch of very versatile people from all over the place and maybe it can also teach us a lesson or two. On one hand, you have kids who play it for the same reason I played it some good 15 years ago, and you've got us, the older players, who loved the game for what it was growing up because it was the best football themed game out there in many aspects, although FIFA entries weren't the only good thing about that era (shoutout to PES 2006 and 2010). It's a game that I used to enjoy because I love football as a sport, I used to play it basically on a professional level, this is the best "active" form for me to engage with the game. I'm probably too stupid for Football Manager though I believe it's only a matter of watchin a few videos to get into it and understand the in-depth mechanics. I always tried playing it and got lost in the menus within 5 minutes. But for what it's worth, I understood FIFA, I understood FUT and the shell of what it once was, the grind was fun to me, using players from past and present that I like, well, until it all got burned to the fucking ground within a year. I was never an Elite div or Rank 1 or even Rank 2 player. But I had certain results, I would get 9 to 11 wins most of the time and with enough free time I could always climb to atleast div 2 in Rivals. Sure, many of you are better and I realize that, but it's not about that. To me it was always about getting better at the game for myself, on my own terms, there would be some progression to it and getting better throughout the years always made me happy. Adult life is adult life and it's very individual, some of us have more free time on our hands, others don't. In my case, I barely have time to do my daily play matches, some SBCs and play Champs on the weekend because of work.
But the question is - how can I consistently enjoy the game if:
The whole situation is very stupid, because there is no viable alternative in terms of football games, and frankly, playing FIFA is a habit and something I've been doing for one half of my life. It's tough for me to get invested into an online competitive game, though I used to play League, Overwatch, stuff like that, but those games became shit over the years as well. That's why, though I'm only one of way too many, from my point of view, my actions bear some value, because as of today, I just don't want to feel like shit because of a game anymore atleast on a weekly basis. As things stand, dumping my time into this game is simply pointless. If I want to play Weekend League, I'll get shat on by the servers, or the gameplay will be horrendous and my cards will feel like freezers getting dragged across the pitch by a rope. Cards with great finishing, will feel like bronze cards, whatever. We're not supposed to get good rewards, and the game will call us out for being "bad" when we get DDAd. At this point, there is nothing positive about it. I will perhaps return for Futties, not that anyone cares, but building fun cards is kinda fun and good, so I'm looking forward to that. Otherwise, I will return only if all of this actually changes something. If the assholes from EA release a statement and actually change something, then I will return earlier, and even then, I'm not giving them a single euro this year. And maybe, for the first time in way too many years, I won't even preorder, maybe I'll play it later on, if it turns out to be better and different. Other than that... there's no point playing if the game is like this. I'm done with feeling negative emotions because of a game designed to gaslight and manipulate us into feeling like shit.
Sorry for the long post, I guess I just felt like I needed to tell someone.

Looking for a similar sweater top (concentric hearts not stripes)
Iā€™m looking for a sweater top thatā€™s similar to this, except it has concentric hearts around the cutout instead of stripes. I saw someone wearing that on my uni campus and thought it was so cute!
Iā€™d appreciate any and all help in tracking something like that down.
Side note: If anyone has any crochet/knitting patterns for such tops, Iā€™d be willing to learn and make one myself (eventually xD).

2024.05.14 07:13 Canoli_lover23 AITA for telling my b f that he needs a career job?

So I (f 23) keep telling my b f (m 24) that he needs a career job. My b f and I have been together for 2 years and during those 2 years Iā€™ve been in college (finished my bachelors and I am now pursuing my masters) my b f isnā€™t in college and heā€™s just been working part time jobs but the thing is he keeps losing these jobs and takes months to find new ones and goes broke every time and now itā€™s to the point where heā€™s homeless and living with a friend now. Iā€™ve always told him that I donā€™t care if he doesnā€™t go to college but he should at least do trade school or something so that he can get certifications so that he can get salary pay so that he can make more money/ save more money for emergencies (like losing a job) and if/when he loses a job he can easily find another job to fall back on in that same field. Iā€™ve told him this, my parents have told him this, his brothers have told him this, his family has told him this, his friends have told him this etc. but every time somebody tells him this he gets defensive and thinks weā€™re trying to bash him but weā€™re not. Weā€™re just tired of seeing the same thing always happening to him (losing a job and asking everyone for money), every time we tell him this he thinks weā€™re saying he needs to go to college/university but we literally tell him word for word ā€œthatā€™s no what weā€™re saying.ā€ I love him but it gets to a point where Iā€™m tired of the same pattern, also Iā€™m a broke college student so every time he loses a job and runs out of money Iā€™m the only one that supports him financially (buying him food, toiletries, just little things because again I am a broke college student). Heā€™s also extremely bad at managing his money when he loses a job, for example he has PlayStation + which is a $10 or $15 subscription for those who donā€™t know which allows you to play certain parts of games like online with friends, etc. so his aunt sent him $20 for food and instead of spending it on food he wanted to spend it on his PlayStation + subscription, and then when I told him he should use it on food instead he got annoyed and said I was telling him what to do, which I didnā€™t, I just made a suggestion. Also another reason I want this for him is so that he can have insurance because the amount of time Iā€™ve known him heā€™s never had it and I want him to be able to take care of his health.
So aita for telling my b f he should get a career job so that he make more money and can save more money, as well as have insurance?
Sorry if this is all over the place, I just started rambling at one point so please let me know if you have any questions/ need clarification.
Edit: more clarification on things. Heā€™s played football his whole life and is stuck on wanting to play football. He has football in his so called ā€œ5 year planā€ or really just life plan in general, but I and many others have told him that he needs to focus more on a career at this point than football because football most likely isnā€™t going to happen, mainly because at his age colleges are looking at grad students that have already been football players (also heā€™s not out on the field everyday practicing, which I feel like if he was serious about football he would be doing that but he goes out on the field twice a month, sometimes not even that). Also money isnā€™t such a big deal with the trade school thing because my dad even offered to help him out a bit
Edit 2: thank you all for all of your opinions. Iā€™ve decided that from now on I wonā€™t financially support him anymore, and if his mindset/actions donā€™t change then itā€™s just time for me to leave
Edit 3: he wants a career (he mainly wants to go into finance) but with that you kinda do need school which he knows but he canā€™t afford college at the moment which is understandable, so Iā€™m not sure why he gets offended when we tell him that he needs to do something for a job whether it be school or not school (also Iā€™m totally okay with him not getting a degree because a degree isnā€™t for everybody and plenty of people make millions without a degree)

2024.05.14 07:06 elmihy Scared to frog malabrigo mecha yarn!

Scared to frog malabrigo mecha yarn!
I have a FO I made out of malabrigo mecha yarn that I now want to frog and make into something new. The thing isā€¦. The yarn is single ply, and Iā€™m worried that frogging it will make it into a kind of fluffy felted disaster! Anyone have experience with this? Are my fears unfounded?
Image is the details of the yarn type, for reference.
Iā€™m also including a link to a revelry folder I made of summer tops I think Iā€™d like to make of this yarn. I know itā€™s unconventional because itā€™s bulky weightā€¦ Iā€™m frogging a scarf and Iā€™d just like to make something simple and beautiful that shows off the yarn and that Iā€™ll actually wear. If anyone has thoughts or recommendations on these patterns, feel free to share! I am looking for something that I think will knit up ok with bulky yarn, and that also sizes up nicely as I am an XL and I often find tank top patterns with stunning sample photos can look completely different when knit up for larger bodies.

2024.05.14 05:16 Dunkbuscuss Question? If they ever decided to revive Smallville which would you rather? A reboot or a sequel and what would you have them do/change?

Personally I have ideas for both if they decided to do a reboot I'd have the first 2 seasons combined into 1 as Season 1 was just finding its footing and its only in season 2 we start seeing the starting if a linear plotline like with the key the caves etc...
So I'd have season 1 end where season 2 ends combine a few essential plotlines into episodes and whatnot have the twister situation/ending for season 1 be the mid-season finale.
I'd also introduce Lois a lot earlier I'd have her be introduced maybe not episode 1 let them build up the essential characters like Clark, Jonathan, Martha, Chloe, Pete, Lex and Lionel and anyone else.
Then start an episode set in Metropolis woth Lois being the rebellious teenage daughter doing a petty crime like Graffiti or Shop lifting then running from the cops only to get caught and her father is called in and as punishment sends her to live with her Cousin this episode could be episode 5 or maybe even 6 or if you really pushed it maybe episode 14 after the resolution of the mid-season finale.
We could have episodes of Lois resisting falling into the comfort of the Small Town vibe but eventually after hanging out with Clark, Chloe, and Pete at the torch she gets roped into writing for the Torch and starts her on her journey from rebellious daughter to Ace Reporter.
She amd Clark are Chloe's feet on the ground, Pete acts as her in with the football players on something amd she acts as the info gatherer and hacker.
I think it would also set up Chloe's "Death" really well in season 4 so Lois can have been investigating since her supposed death and despite the general getting in her way she keeps digging and suddenly Clark shows up again and strange things start happening again and together after he regains his memory he helps her.
I would also have Lana and Clark get together a lot sooner or if not I'd wrap up their relationship sooner like have her leave that video like she does in the original series or actually kill her off eother one so that Clark and Lois can build their relationship it almost felt like thr Clark and Lana show by how long they dragged their relationship on for.
One other addition to this hyperthetical reboot I'd do is have Clark wear his Superman Suit a lot sooner and get him the ability to fly I probably would've had that ability after his rebirth like in the original series when he goes searching for the stones in Season 4 Episode 1 as Kal-El even after he regains his true self I'd have Clark gain the ability to fly.
That's all I can think that I'd change of the reboot maybe have more people find out his secret sooner as the amount of times he tip toes around goes to tell people butbthen changes his mind was really annoying so maybe tell Pete in Season 1 instead of Season 2.
Have Clark tell Chloe and Lois instead of then figuring it out. I'd also have while he hides the truth about his abilities from Lex I'd have that he does give certain truths like the fact he can read the symbols and whatnot he could even come up with lies like how he spent the time between season 3 and 4 studying the writinfs and discovered a pattern and now he can read the symbols.
Or something like that but now for my idea if they ever revived the series ckntinueing where they left off.
Depending ifnthey decided to do another season or make it a movie depends first off I'd have them make the comics canon for those who don't know they did a season 11 comic series a lot of shows did this back in the day as a way to keep the series going without the budget or slot for another season Charmed is another who did this.
But in the Season 11 Comics they also brought in some of the more iconic characters like Batman so ifnit was a sequel season I'd have them turn the comics into episodes maybe expanding them a bit to make them full episodes but I'd have the main antagonist be Darkside and have the final episodes be like a Smallville Version of the movie Justice League War.
I'd also have the actual character appear not be like a weird smoke cloud and have him looking for the Anti-Life Equation like he does in most versions if the character.
If it was a sequel movie I'd probably do the same thing only skim past unimportant plotpoints to build the new Justice League team with Oliver obviously but then bring Barry Allen and we learn that when Bart ran away from home he didn't realise he travelled back in time.
But yeah these are just some of my ideas how would you do things if you were given the power to revive Smallville and hownwould you go about it Reboot or Sequel?

2024.05.14 04:43 scrappysquash My gauge is constantly lying?

I've been knitting for three years and I haven't had any issues with gauge before except my last couple projects. I have excellent tension and use the same needles and hold my yarn the same way every time. I've made plenty of shawls, shirts and sweaters before with no issues, until now.
A sweater last year - it turned out way too big. A sweater I finished a couple months ago - turned out way too small. I just finished a tank top that I made sure to keep a looser tension on, and it still turned out too small. For this project, I wet blocked the swatch and layed it to dry without pinning. I just blocked my top and stretched it and pinned it, and it's still not matching what my gauge said.
I make a 5 inch square swatch, wet blocked. I then get the water out with a towel, I gently stretch it vertically, then horizontally, then diagonally in each direction and I gently pat it to a square shape and let it dry without pinning. When the swatch is fully dry, I gently shake it out and I measure gauge.
I can't for the life of me figure out why I can't get a garment that matches what my gauge says? It's getting frustrating and I'm loosing motivation and interest in knitting because of it.
ETA: what I meant by "I use the same needles" is I use the same needles on the project that me the best gauge in the swatch. I don't use the same 2mm needle for fingering weight stuck and for a worsted weight scarf. I'm not that much of an idiot!
And I treat the swatch and final garment exactly same (with exception to that last top where I stretched the top and it still is top small.) I also do swatch in the round if the pattern is made in the round. As far as stretching the swatch - I'm not yanking it around for dear life it's a gentle stretch, exactly the same as a wet sweater would naturally stretch when it's being moved around wet. It's a technique I read about from an experience knitter - who also recommends hanging the swatch when it's dry. I have also tried that but it obviously hasn't helped, since none if my pieces lately are turning out.

2024.05.14 04:11 Ur_Anemone Itā€™s time feminists started listening to men

Itā€™s time feminists started listening to men
Feminismā€™s foe is supposed to be the middle-aged guy railing at his TV for showing ladiesā€™ bloody football or, worse, letting women commentate on a menā€™s game. The dinner-on-the-table, girlie-calendar-on-the-wall world he grew up with has been swept away. Poor baffled, angry old fool.
Younger men raised by working mothers to see female classmates and colleagues as equals are thought to breezily accept feminismā€™s gains. Except this week research by Kingā€™s College London showed a quarter of British males aged 16 to 29 believe it is harder now to be a man than woman ā€” and they are more likely than their boomer dads to believe feminism does more harm than good.
A global trend is emerging among adults under 30 that the academics Rosie Campbell and Alice Evans call ā€œgendered ideological polarisationā€. From South Korea to Spain, young women increasingly support liberal political parties while their male peers are more likely to vote conservative or populist. Older men and womenā€™s voting patterns, however, still largely align.
So what is dividing young people? Most critiques focus on how the sexes now live in different social media bubbles: girls on Instagram and TikTok, boys drawn to ā€œmanosphereā€ gurus like Andrew Tate, the alleged sex trafficker eagerly exploiting angry, disaffected boys who canā€™t get laid.
Yet could young women and men diverge politically because each is pursuing their material best interests? Told to #bekind and empathetic, no wonder young women are drawn to liberal parties that promise to care for migrants and the poor. But their support is not entirely altruistic. Progressives offer what they need: state-funded childcare, an end to the gender pay gap, equality legislation and campaigns against male violence such as MeToo.
In the hierarchy of oppression preached by progressive politics ā€œthe last shall come first and the first shall come lastā€. At its apex are women, people of colour and the ever-expanding LGBTQ+ ā€œcommunityā€. A straight, white guy is at the very bottom. Most young men I know shrug off or joke about their ā€œprivilegeā€. But for lost boys struggling to find a foothold, or those whoā€™ve never felt alpha at all, it must be a slap in the face to learn your needs are not just invalid but that youā€™re an embodiment of ā€œtoxic masculinityā€. Why vote for a party that calls you the problem?
ā€œThis is the best time in history to be a woman,ā€ says Evans. Undoubtedly true. The Labour Party has dropped all-women shortlists now female MPs are a majority in the PLP. Women have never been safer in childbirth. Once girls are allowed education, they always exceed boys: globally, 100 women are in higher education for every 88 men. From astronauts to prime minister, there is no male bastion women havenā€™t breached. Female empowerment is celebrated. You go, girl!
Evans is right that gender equality is not a ā€œzero sum gameā€ ā€” realising womenā€™s potential has economic benefits for all ā€” but coldly, objectively this not the best time in history to be a man. At work he must compete with women for preferment, at home he canā€™t expect the full wifely domestic service. (Older men are more relaxed about feminism, I suspect, because it hasnā€™t harmed their lifestyle.) Plus what gender barriers do men have to break? Where are the plaudits and ā€œyou go, boy!ā€ for being a stay-at-home dad or caring for your elderly mum?
Evans notes that one reason for gender divergence is a ā€œfeminised public cultureā€ and cites the book industry where a predominantly female staff publish mainly female writers to serve female readers. The Royal Society of Literature website boasts about its ā€œqueefemale-led teamā€, hardly welcoming to a young man toiling over his first draft.
Yet the feminised sphere now extends into teaching, academia, medicine and the legal profession. Even if you greet this as progress, it is facile to suggest men have lost nothing. And what irks younger males is still being hammered about ā€œprivilegeā€ by confident, successful female peers.
I realise I can only write this because Iā€™m a woman, a feminist even. (Few male colleagues would dare.)
Failing to address specific male issues wonā€™t make womenā€™s lives better; indeed it only breeds misogyny and wider misery. Countries with the widest gender polarisation have the lowest birth rates.
In South Korea, where men retain traditional sexist ideas while wallowing in modern online porn culture, young women now sign pledges not to marry or even date. A riven society is a loveless one.
Yet to raise under-attainment of working-class boys makes you a menā€™s rights activist; ask if fatherless black boys are drawn to gangs and youā€™re racist. Every man who speaks to the modern male condition must be another Andrew Tate. Jordan Petersonā€™s initial 12 rules merely told young men to stand up straight and that tidying your room or stroking a cat could bring structure and joy to seemingly meaningless lives. Now Peterson is demonised.
From the female standpoint it looks as if everything men enjoy is either mocked or condemned. A group of blokes going fishing must be saddos avoiding their wives: a stag-do must be a drunken, red-light crawl, but a hen night is an uproarious female bonding trip. The only acceptable men-only spaces now are gyms and, as Helen Lewis said on her Radio 4 New Gurus programme, blokey podcasts thrive because they serve the hunger for banter once satisfied in the pub.
Is it harder to be a man than a woman now? In some senses, yes. And if this is how a quarter of young guys feel, instead of demonising or dismissing them, we need to find out why.

2024.05.14 02:17 lavender_sugar Moby Mini Decrease Issues

Moby Mini Decrease Issues
I'm working on the sleeves for my Moby mini and I'm having a big of trouble understanding the decreases. I'm probably a novice-ish knitter and this is my first sweater. When it says to work the decreases to "fit with the pattern," what does that mean? I'm screwing something up (I think), as you can see--four knit stitches where I think it is supposed to look like the regular double moss--but can't quite wrap my head around what I need to be doing.
I'm probably not going to rip back to fix this because the error will be under the arm and my knitting time is extremely limited (I have a 11 month old). But I DO want to do it right in the future. Can anyone help? lol
