2024.05.14 15:12 nors4 Finnally got smt, let's hope it is a begining of my career.

This thread has been my comfort zone for a long time. I would come here and read all the posts of people who have been struggling to find a job, just like I did. My personal story is not unique to this thread, where there are probably countless stories like mine. To give some context: I'm an international student (migrant đŸ„Č) in the UK. I have studied here for 5 years at a good university that is part of the Russell Group. I completed both my master's and bachelor's degrees with high 2.1 grades. During my university years, I had a couple of internships and some work experience in a pub. Despite my qualifications and experience, finding a graduate position was incredibly challenging.
I'll be honest, in the beginning, I wasn't really applying for jobs. My daily application rate was low, and my self-esteem suffered as I had no idea how to do it properly. What kept me going was the motivation that if I didn't do it, I would fail to live up to what my parents had provided for me. My go-to tool became a chat GTP for cover letters, tailored CVs, and sometimes interview preparations.
Out of all the interviews I had, 70% led to nothing. I applied to more than 600 jobs during this period, got around 20 interviews, and only 3 led to second/final round interviews. Interestingly, those 3 interviews that led me to the next stage came from "Quick apply" postings, which said "send your CV and Cover letter to this email." I would advise others to pay attention to the "quick apply" posts. The first company that invited me for an in-person interview was great and had interesting people. They even covered my transportation costs. However, they sent me a rejection on Sunday via an automatic reply. This devastated and demotivated me for at least a week. I wished they had sent me a personalized rejection on Monday, especially since they had brought me to the final round. On top of that, in the email, they said they would be happy to provide feedback if I requested it, but when I did request feedback, no one ever got back to me.
Just before that, I directly contacted a company called Prohibition Partners through their info email. They contacted me back and I had an interview with one of the Data Analysts. They seemed happy with me and asked me to do a research project on the Weed market in Canada to see how I can conduct market research. I completed the research and was told they would review it and get back to me, but I was ghosted.
The last interview was nice, and I got it through "Quick apply," where it said to send the CV and Cover letter directly to the recruiter's email address. The phone screening went well, and the interview stage went well too, but unfortunately, they went with a more qualified and experienced candidate.
After half a year, I finally got something - an internship that I received through a cold emailing, and I hope they will give me a returning offer afterward.
How was this whole job search experience? It was fucking horrible. I hated the repetitive workdays and fucking workday website, the same typical questions everywhere, and the re-typing of information from my CV that was already provided in the CV. It felt like they shouldn't ask for a CV if they're just going to ask for the same information again. The whole job market feels insane right now. However, stay strong, there is a chance, but you never know where it's going to come from.

2024.05.14 15:08 YourlocalTitanicguy Odd Titanica: Hollywood sleaze

In this edition of “Odd Titanica”, we are going to dive into the sleazy, opportunistic world of show business. A world that comedian Fred Allen said of, “you can take all the sincerity in Hollywood, place it in the navel of a fruit fly, and still have room for three caraway seeds and a producer’s heart”. Hyperbolic? Let’s take a look at Hollywood’s response to the Titanic disaster to see that there really is no business like show business.
Dorothy Gibson and the lost, first, film are well worn trivia by now. The traumatized actress rushed into production, her inability to process her trauma causing her mental breakdown, collapse, and retirement from acting immediately after the film was finished - it’s a perfect story to demonstrate the callousness of the film industry. But there is more to the story, and digging deeper shows us that “Saved” may have been the least sleazy project undertaken by the studios.
Dorothy’s account of the sinking and the suffering she endured filming “Saved from the Titanic” are predominantly found in two sources - The New York Dramatic Mirror and Moving Picture World. These were trade magazines, published weekly, and consisting solely of material related to the stage and screen business. These would be announcements of upcoming features, casting news, celebrity gossip, technical news - anything the movie star to the man sweeping the floor at the cinema needed to know. And they included ads
 lots and lots of ads.
Immediately realizing that Titanic was not only a horrible tragedy but an incredible business opportunity, Moving Picture World got to work. As people stormed White Star Line offices, and raided newspaper carts for any drop of news regarding the sinking, Moving Picture World provided the latest in Titanic news; or perhaps we should say “Titanic” news.
The headlines of the April 27th issue may have screamed TITANIC, but as the public grabbed their copy and hurriedly flipped through the pages, they found that what they were actually given was ads. Those eye grabbing headlines were followed by much smaller print-

But, show business would strike again - the ads were legitimate, but what they were advertising was not. When cinema owners would order these “only surviving genuine negatives of the disaster” complete with lobby display package, they instead received-

Take, for instance, the picture showing the Titanic with about a sixth of her forward length stuck into the iceberg. Everybody knows the collision did not occur in that manner!
They pointed to the following ad as an example - FIRST PICTURES OF THE TITANIC OCEAN DISASTER. The cinema owners responded by noting that they had misread, crammed in tiny letters were the words “sunk in” so that ad actually read FIRST PICTURES OF THE TITANIC sunk in OCEAN DISASTER. It was the customer's fault, they said, to be stupid enough to think anyone could have actually filmed the sinking.
Once this ruse was discovered, the studios shifted gears. The next step was to advertise film along with presentations by “A Lecturer who was on board”. When the audience realized the lecturer was not on Titanic and demanded a refund - the response from the managers was

Whether it was this, or something else, eventually the public snapped and began hauling out cinema managers and beating them in the streets. By May, the mayors of Boston and Memphis had banned the showing of any Titanic pictures - moving or still- within the city.
But, where was Dorothy in all this? Tucked in the very back of the magazine, after another newsreel ad,, we get to the celebrity sighting and gossip section. Ed Lux of the Rex Film Exchange was in town, Dan Markowitz of Fox Pictures was as well, Arthur Schmidt of the Victor Film Company was seen having a lovely spa at a Turkish Bath, Sam Gobel of the St Louis Motion Picture Company has been walking up and down 42nd street, we don’t know if Southern film maker Henry Wasserman is still here but he might be, Dorothy Gibson survived the sinking of the Titanic, and the Director of Selig Pictures took some actresses to Santa Catalina for a swim and a photoshoot and they had a great time.
By the following edition, on May 2nd, Moving Picture World was also able to provide its readers with the first stills from “Saved from the Titanic” and a feature on Dorothy. Along with this, tucked in the editorials, the magazine finally published a piece of truthful news about the Titanic disaster-

As a matter of right, the camera man ought to have been permitted. The day of the enfranchisement of the motion picture will surely come .. which will give equal rights to the cinematographer and the newspaper man.

Case approved. Married to USC. We’re both transgender.
Hello! I’ve been a lurker on this subreddit for a while, and have found this to be an incredible resource. We just got our case approved recently so I wanted to join in and share some of insights as well.
Specifically for transgender people as well. As, the information out there pertaining to queer petitioners is very sparse.
  1. Gender related takeaways
In the past few years I’ve used three names and the submitted evidence reflected this discrepancy. Not to mention the difference in pronouns in different documents. After speaking to a lawyer, I attached a notarized letter to my application explaining that I’m transgender and the difference is names, and pronouns used by different people.
I also attached two physicians letters confirming my transition.
I also changed my gender with social security and my drivers license before submitting my application (I’m in NY, so relatively easy). My home country doesn’t let you officially change your gender, so that could not be updated.
  1. Overall takeaways
We prepared and submitted our application ourselves. But we did get help from a lawyer on two occasions.
First, I booked a consult with an immigration lawyer ($300) before I started my application. That was great because she was able to answer some questions I had specific to my case.
Secondly, we took advantage of a local non-profits application review services. We took our completed application to her and she gave everything a look-over for free. This was super helpful, as she pointed out mistakes that we would not have known about otherwise.
We were also extremely well-organized in our preparation. We tried to follow USCIS’s guidelines to a T.
https://www.uscis.gov/forms/filing-guidance/tips-for-filing-forms-by-mail
We did pretty much everything listed on here, including the two hole punches and the sticky tabs. I like to believe this is partially why our case was adjudicated so fast.
Finally, I believe the best thing I did throughout this process is try to think abt it as little as possible once we put in the application. I didn’t check the case tracker or the USCIS site unless I got a notification, and I focused on other things in my life. In fact, our I-485 was approved 4 days ago and I just learned abt it today 💀.
I’ve attached photos of my timelines with this post for reference. If anyone has any questions for me, especially queer people going through this process, please feel free to ask! And I will do my best to help you any way I can!

2024.05.14 14:37 Tariq804 Council President Ladel Lewis Defends Flint DDA Director Spending $20k For Personal Expenses

Councilwoman Ladel Lewis was quick to defend the former DDA Director Kaira May, who spent $20,336.75 of government funds on personal items. Lewis went so far as to lie and claim that some government agencies allow the use of government credit cards for personal expenses. The money has yet to be repaid.
May’s spending was originally brought to public attention on May 22, 2023, when Flint City Councilman Dennis Pfeiffer shared a letter he penned to Mayor Sheldon Neeley, who serves as the chairman of the Flint DDA Board, on his social media page.
Flint Beat has since reviewed the credit card statements to which Pfeiffer referred and confirmed there are multiple charges to hotels, restaurants, and a local nail salon dating back to at least June 2022.
Can we please recall this cancer once and for all?

2024.05.14 14:35 Ok_Letterhead_4782 Can I get some opinions on a possible unfair situation I'm dealing with?

So I just graduated from my university with my bachelor's degree (in a health profession) and will be attending the same school this fall for my masters degree. While preparing for grad school, I applied for a scholarship offered by my school and applied for a GA position, but unfortunately, I'll be starting grad school with neither. I'm obviously upset because I wasn't considered, but I also feel frustrated because of the circumstances surrounding these situations. I could use opinions on whether I'm acting irrationally because of hurt feelings or if I'm involved in a potentially unfair situation.
When I was applying for my school's masters program, I only applied to one of the merit-based scholarships that they offered. While I did do this for financial reasons (the scholarship I applied to offered the biggest financial reward), I also did this because I believed I didn't fully qualify for the other scholarships (for example, one scholarship stated it would show preference to a student that had experience and wanted to work with clients of a specific age with a specific diagnosis, and I lack experience with this demographic). So I knew that I had a small chance of receiving any scholarship money from my school, given my own decison to only apply for one. It turns out that applying didn't even matter though, as I found out that more than one person was rewarded with one of these scholarships, even though they stated themselves that they never even applied for them. How is it fair for someone to be granted a scholarship they didn't apply to? Each scholarship required letters of rec and a personal statement outlining why they'd be a good fit, personal experience, and proof of commitment towards our field. How could they get these scholarships without putting in the necessary requirements? And, of course, this made me wonder that if an application didn't matter, why wasn't I considered?
I'm also frustrated with what's been happening with the GA position. Faculty gave us a vague idea of when the applications for this position would open, but never ACTUALLY announced it to us at large. It took me checking our school's career page every week to see if applications had opened. When I asked a professor for a letter of rec for my application, they accidentally revealed that some of my other classmates had already asked for a letter, and thus, had already applied. So not only did our program fail to inform all of us of when the applications opened, but some of my own classmates knew about it and kept it to themselves. During the last week of class, I found out that I had qualified for an interview. I heavily prepared for my interview and honestly thought I did really well, but I wasn't chosen. I don't know how many other people also got an interview (it definitely wasn't everyone who applied), but I do know of some other people who got an interview, and I have a gut feeling that they might've been chosen. And tbh, if it was just them and me who made it to the interview process, I never stood a chance. I have nothing against them; they're incredibly kind and considerate people who have also worked hard to succeed in our program and extracurriculars. We all get along well even if we have our different friend groups. However, there's definitely an ounce of preferential treatment that sometimes goes their way that has been felt by myself and others. This is obviously all speculation, because I don't actually know if they're the ones who were chosen, but I was taken aback that upon hearing that I wasn't considered, some of my other classmates came to the same idea/conclusion that I did: that they must've been chosen for the positions. I can't help but wonder if they really are the ones who were chosen, and I can't stop wondering what it is that I'm lacking in comparison.
It's not like I was an irresponsible student either. I graduated with honors and a 3.86 gpa. I was part of our program's club and also served on the executive board for it. I never had a missed or late assignment and I only missed class once due to an illness that was excused. I performed well during clinicals, being given full marks by my supervisors, and more than once, my professors referenced my work ethic and diligence in succeeding in the work/expectations they gave me. Rationally, I know that they were also qualified, but given past experiences, I can't help but think that part of the reason I wasn't chosen for any of the scholarships or the position may be due to preferential treatment.
Someone please tell me if i'm reacting like a butthurt child or if my concerns are warranted. I'm more upset than anything after finding out I wasn't considered for either of these opportunities (and not knowing why), and I need to know if i'm being irrational.

2024.05.14 14:32 Little-Week5326 "Fired" from job - how to best stay in Japan

Hi all, I started at a company in Tokyo ~1 year ago and I've been asked to resign in return for 3 months severance. It doesn't seem like I have much room for negotiation, so will likely soon accept it, then figure out my next steps. My main priority is staying in Japan.
I work in a niche field as an English speaker, so I know that it will be a daunting task to find another role. Because there aren't a ton of jobs in my line of work, how strict is immigration if I do not find a new job in 3 months? I still have 4 years on my work visa, but I'm unsure how much "proof" they need if I don't shoot out a ton of applications since there not being a ton of openings in my field. I've heard mixed reviews here; some say that immigration often allows you to stay out your full work visa regardless, but I wouldn't want to get blindsided with a letter immediately forcing me out.
Again, my priority is staying in Japan, so if I do not find a job in 3 months and immigration wants me to leave, is there any difficulty in switching from a work visa to student visa for Japanese language school? I wasn't sure if there are additional issues in getting a student visa if you already have a work visa.
Thank you for your help - I appreciate it.

2024.05.14 14:23 tvmushroomz uoft physical letter but no online acceptance ?

has anyone received a physical letter from UofT, but no online offer on OUAC or UofT's applicant portal ? my bf got a physical letter in the mail about a week ago, but there isn't an offer on OUAC. he also checked the joinID site and under application status, it said to go to the applicant portal, but he couldn't find his offer there either ? when he submitted his application (chemical engineering), his video interview was left incomplete, and anytime he opens the applicant portal it just says "incomplete" ? we're both very confused, just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and what he should do/expect ?

2024.05.14 14:13 LMDM5 Knoxville Housing aka Lack Thereof-

On Feb. 9, 2022, I officially became "Homeless" on state record and applied for rent and housing assistance in Knoxville through KCDC/Section 8.
Per today's date:
Zeitraum = 825 days aka 27.123 months. This is exactly the length of time I've been surviving homeless.
It wasn't until THIS YEAR that my name "officially" has gone from being on their "PRE-waiting list": aka the long-ass waiting list you're on BEFORE graduating to the "OFFICIAL" waiting list.
*Btw, no one informed me of this being their process. I waited for many hopeful months while living out of my car, waiting to be called that I contacted them to get the news of only being on the PRE-waiting list- List. Good shit...
So, I decided to visit KCDC in-person last week to speak to them about my still pending status and ask if there were any actions I could take to help my chances of having a place to call home...
FYI: The Broadway location is ONLY for applying to any of their listed complexes. Unfortunately, ALL their waiting lists are also completely full.
*The Harriet Tubman location is for applying or relating to receiving vouchers for financial rental assistance.
FYI: you can ONLY APPLY for a voucher between their generous hours of 8AM-3PM only on the 2nd WED of each month, just fyi for any new applicants.
All I was told at each location was to "continue waiting" and that I would one day be contacted whenever my name came up.
The housing costs in Knoxville, especially have risen quickly dramatically even since when I very first began applying and they'll continue this trend.
**BTW, they're SHUTTING DOWN our Homeless Shelter on Broadway due to a LACK OF FUNDING (good timing), so yet another option we can all cross off our lists of any places to lie our heads down at night.
Pretty ironic that TN is the FREAKING VOLUNTEER STATE, considering... "GO VOLS", am I right??
See news link here: https://www.wate.com/news/knox-county-news/the-foyer-a-low-barrier-knoxville-homeless-shelter-set-to-close-as-officials-seek-new-operato
Oh yeah, HOMELESSNESS IN TN is also now a CLASS E FELONY!
*You are automatically disqualified from receiving public assistance such as Section 8 and SNAP benefits unless you've fully paid off ALL FEES (up to $3,000 for being homeless) and have fully completed your probation period! *KEEPING THINGS REALLY CLASSY, TN! 😜 (Also, you can't sleep in your vehicle at any rest stops, either. Also illegal. You can sit there in your car for only 3hrs max.)
"In Tennessee, felonies are classified from A to E, with Class A being the most serious and Class E being the least severe. A Class E felony in Tennessee is the lowest level of felony. It includes offenses such as theft of property valued at $1,000 to $2,500, certain driving offenses like third or subsequent DUI offenses, stalking, and forgery. The typical punishments for Class E felonies in Tennessee include: 1. One to six years of imprisonment (PRISON TIME, not jail), and/or 2. Fines up to $3,000. (Also, just pointing out that with any Class E felonies, being the "least" serious felony, if any fines for the offense are deemed as "unspecified" in their books, they then have the capability to charge an offender up to $50,000.)
However, these punishments can vary based on a variety of factors such as the exact nature of the crime, whether or not the defendant has a prior criminal record, and other relevant factors considered by the court." Covertly, they've named this abomination as the:
"Equal Access to Public Property Act of 2012.” Makes it sound so helpful and positive for us, doesn't it? Thanks, guys! LOL!
See below what all is covered, including: **If they happen to search and find any of your stored belongings (likely being at times literally their entire life's possessions, including if they find you've stored your food somewhere) the police will immediately confiscate it, and then you will have a total of 90 days to go to them and claim all your belongings or else they'll consider it as "abandoned property". You must detail exactly where on the property that they found your items, so that they then will slap you with a Class E Felony, charge you a "holding fee" for whatever amount of time they "stored" it for you, also stating that "the court shall include an order of restitution for any property damage or loss incurred as a result" of you or your belongings being present on the state property. But hey, at least you get your items back!

My Story: (if you've made it this far and give any shits about hearing it for the sake of context.)
Around 1 year-deep into the COVID-19 pandemic, I had been living in an expensive house centered in the North Knox Historic District, working FT at a job I'd spent the past few yrs diligently climbing their ladder, and splitting the house payment with my then, Fiancee of 5 1/2 yrs. He began dating a different girl, had moved her into our house, while stating that "If I didn't stop being depressed, he was going to kick me out". Unfortunately, the house had been put solely in his name when bought. You see, my grandmother had just passed from COVID-19, my childhood best friend had just passed away, and I had been informed suddenly that my 84yrs-old dementia-ridden Father was getting worse and also nearing his last days. Not long after, my older sister contacted me acting upset, stating that he now needed to be on continual watch for FT care, so I packed my things, left my fiancee and my then home and moved in to care for my late father. Eventually, I had to leave my job to fulfill my caretaking duties but I don't regret being there for my father but it grew to be very difficult times, as it was for many those yrs. Dad passed away Jan. 31, 2022. My mother immediately inherited the house at his death, per their messy divorce agreement many yrs before. She so graciously left no time after me literally watching him take his very last breath in the bedroom down the hall from my own for her to serve me immediate eviction papers, now forcing me to leave the home that I grew up with my father in, while being raised. This house, I had only 1 year previous, agreed to my mother and sister when they had requested this of me, quit my long-term, FT job, losing all my sources of income in order to live with and solitary care for my father. (Everyone else- meaning my mother and 3 sisters -were all "too busy" to help me out or give even short breaks. I'm informing you of this, so that anyone that ever says to themselves, "why don't they just go live with family", can comprehend how that's not an actual option for everyone, so when the systems are failing, ppl aren't always on the streets or living out of their cars bc of drug problems or laziness or whatever other common misconceptions I've heard from ppl that are limited in grasping these situations for others. That last month that he was still alive, they all "forbade" me from leaving the house at all nor having any visitors "for his health", despite my deep despair from watching his health ferociously decline, resulting in my very rapidly declining mental health and massive weight-loss and over-exhaustion. Upon receiving my eviction notice, I then immediately began applying for Section 8 assistance. I had no one left and nowhere to go. It's like this for a lot of people. Don't assume ppl always have any other options available, is my point of giving so much backstory. Not exactly trying to "victimize" myself here for pity. I'm strong, I've got this. Just trying to get some points across for when you judge another's situation that you don't know.
Ok, here's the last I'll say about all this. Just humor me and try to consider what I'm pointing out here.
Every single one of us local TN natives have seen through the years how various homeless individuals will bravely step into some of our favorite local diners, gas stations, retail stores, etc. Them, asking employees permissions for maybe utilizing a restroom, some cold water or a drink, often after them walking around most the day (shelter kicks everyone out once it's morning), often after being in our unforgiving weather or high temps. Sometimes, they're asking even for a small bite to eat or leftovers from the kitchen. SO MANY times throughout the years, we've all been standing by, as we witness some enraged employee or the manager angrily decline, followed with often loud threats of calling the cops on them, etc in an attempt to motivate them to not come back asking later, as now they see how many of their annoyed paying customers are actively shaking their heads and shaming their whole interaction with rotten looks of disgust.
I mean after all, our businesses ABSOLUTELY can't be taking any risks of "losing their dedicated customers, just BC some "lazy bums" keep showing up, "always asking for free handouts" and "scaring away our business".
Really, it's best to just not give them anything in the 1st place cus ya know, just like strays, they'll "just keep showing back up"...
Right?
Excluding sometimes a random kind individual's exception, for the most part this mindset I'm highlighting here has most often worked as an sorta unspoken "Golden Rule" when we're relating to how we'll decidedly "handle" our large and growing homeless population.
Now that our housing prices have fully skyrocketed, with increases markedly on the rise almost immediately after the COVID-19 Pandemic that left so many of us without income that was supporting our access to necessities. Many, many "middle-class" individuals who were previously working averaging their 5 days/week (ty past labor strikes enforcing our allowance of 2 days off) and living comfortably on their 40hrs/week paychecks are currently struggling to find availability and also afford even a 1br ran-down apartment in our "lower-class" neighborhoods. Most are now working multiple jobs trying to keep up, and childcare isn't offered for free, so it keeps everyone from having opportunities to not only spend time raising their children vs random strangers who are also overworked, but how can you save money when you're losing part of what you earn, just to be able to go to work and not be fully abandoning your children to fend for themselves if left home alone?
Often, homeless ppl can be seen all throughout our city, and guaranteed to be growing in mass numbers when inching closer toward that underpass leading up to the Historic Gay St./Downtown/UT campus/Cumberland Strip. *It's really fairly ironic I've thought, how so much of our income has always been made/spent here, however we're required each time, to first drive through the huge crowd of terribly unfortunate ppl left standing without their bare necessities, often left to sleep outside the packed shelter when it hits capacity, which is always a guarantee. They're not left outside strictly bc they're "on drugs", like a lot have been led to believe.
Lastly, but oh of such an amazing relevance-
**Here's some realism surrounding our cultures' universally pre-conceived (disconnected/egotistical and mis-informed), accepted stigma that states the following phrase:
"These ppl just won't get a job bc they're SO LAZY and just want to live off all us hard-working American's tax dollars...blah blah blah.." Employers won't hire if you don't have an address and the shelters fail to deliver anyone's incoming mail, nor do businesses want to hire a homeless person showing up without proper hygiene or attire or any kind of criminal record. Also, transportation is a bitch. KAT bus costs money, and is very limited on its area services. By walking such lengthy distances, not only can your safety be at risk (especially for Females or any shifts beginning or letting out after dark) but you're gonna be super sweaty and gross by the time you actually arrive to then work a full shift, if you can even somehow make it on time every day by walking for hours before and then after every single shift that you show for.
This isn't any kinda "new" issue for the poor, btw. Don't be such heartless fools, making someone else's situation about "you".
Life's realities can forcibly humble an individual, catching us off-guard for what we'll often end up facing. Always count your blessings and never assume you know anything about anyone else's struggles or how they got there. We're all just trying to survive in this place.
Thanks for reading and hopefully this info helps bring insight to whomever reads this. Good luck out there, I mean it. We got this. ❀

2024.05.14 14:13 Yurii_S_Kh The Prayer Rule of St. Ambrose of Optina To Be Read in Times of Temptation

The Prayer Rule of St. Ambrose of Optina To Be Read in Times of Temptation
The Prayer Rule of St. Ambrose of Optina To Be Read in Times of Temptation (Sretensky Monastery, 2006). 32 pgs.
St. Ambrose, elder of Optina offered to those who came to him with various sorrows and trials a special, brief prayer rule that is possible for any Christian to read. The elder knew from his own experience the effectiveness of these prayers, how they strengthen one's enfeebled spirit, and how they scatter the enemy's attacks if read with faith and hope in God's almighty help. This prayer rule, comprised of the Psalms of David, we offer here together with extracts from the letters of St. Ambrose.
FROM THE LETTERS OF ST. AMBROSE OF OPTINA
Hope in God's mercy and help, and believe that the Lord is powerful to deliver you from all attacks both human and demonic. It is written in the Psalms: The Lord scattereth the plans of the heathens, He setteth aside the devices of the peoples... But the counsel of the Lord abideth unto eternity (Ps. 32:10–11).
I am writing down some Psalms for you that St. David prayed when he was being persecuted by his enemies: numbers 5, 53, 58, and 142. Chose the appropriate words from these Psalms for yourself, and read them often, turning to God with faith and humility. When you are being warred against by despondency, or some sorrow beyond your control, read Psalm 101.
Psalm 3. Of David, when he fled from the face of Abessalom his son, in the wilderness.
O Lord, why are they multiplied that afflict me? Many rise up against me. Many say unto my soul: There is no salvation for him in his God. But Thou, O Lord, art my helper, my glory, and the lifter up of my head. I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and He heard me out of His holy mountain. I laid me down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord will help me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people that set themselves against me round about. Arise, O Lord, save me, O my God, for Thou hast smitten all who without cause are mine enemies; the teeth of sinners hast Thou broken. Salvation is of the Lord, and Thy blessing is upon Thy people.
Psalm 53. For the end: among the hymns of instruction by David, when the Ziphites came and said to Saul: Lo, is not David hidden with us?
O God, in Thy name save me, and in Thy strength do Thou judge me. O God, hearken unto my prayer, give ear unto the words of my mouth. For strangers are risen up against me, and mighty men have sought after my soul and have not set God before themselves. For behold, God helpeth me, and the Lord is the protector of my soul. He will bring evils upon mine enemies. Utterly destroy them by Thy truth. Willingly shall I sacrifice unto Thee; I will confess Thy name, O Lord, for it is good. For out of every affliction hast Thou delivered me, and mine eye hath looked down upon mine enemies.
Palm 58. For the end: destroy not. David's. For a pillar inscription, when Saul sent and watched his house to slay him.
Rescue me from mine enemies, O God, and from them that rise up against me redeem me. Deliver me from them that work iniquity, and from men of blood do Thou save me. For lo, they have hunted after my soul, the mighty have set upon me. Neither is it mine iniquity, O Lord, nor my sin; without iniquity I ran, and directed my steps; arise to meet me, and behold. And Thou, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, be attentive to visit all the heathen; be not merciful to any that work iniquity. They shall return at evening, and shall hunger like dogs, and shall go round about the city. Behold, they shall utter sounds with their mouth, and a sword is in their lips: For who, say they, hath heard? And Thou, O Lord, shalt laugh them to scorn; Thou shalt bring to nought all the heathen. O my Strength, I will keep watch for Thee, for Thou, O God, art my helper. As for my God, His mercy shall go before me; my God shall make it manifest unto me among mine enemies. Slay them not, lest at any time they forget Thy law; scatter them by Thy power, and bring them down, O Lord my defender. The sin of their mouth is the speech of their lips; yea, let them be taken captive in their pride. And from their curse and falsehood shall their final destruction be made known in the wrath of their utter destruction, and they shall be no more. And they shall know that God is sovereign of Jacob and of the ends of the earth. They shall return at evening, and shall hunger like dogs, and shall go round about the city. They shall be scattered abroad that they may eat; if they be not satisfied, they shall murmur. But as for me, I will sing of Thy power; and in the morning I will rejoice in Thy mercy. For Thou art become my helper and my refuge in the day of my tribulation. Thou art my helper, unto Thee will I chant; for Thou, O God, art my helper; O my God, Thou art my mercy.
Psalm 142. David's. When his son Abessalom pursued him.
O Lord, hear my prayer, give ear unto my supplication in Thy truth; hearken unto me in Thy righteousness. And enter not into judgement with Thy servant, for in Thy sight shall no man living be justified. For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath humbled my life down to the earth. He hath sat me in darkness as those that have been long dead, and my spirit within me is become despondent; within me my heart is troubled. I remembered days of old, I meditated on all Thy works, I pondered on the creations of Thy hands. I stretched forth my hands unto Thee; my soul thirsteth after Thee like a waterless land. Quickly hear me, O Lord; my spirit hath fainted away. Turn not Thy face away from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. Cause me to hear Thy mercy in the morning; for in Thee have I put my hope. Cause me to know, O Lord, the way wherein I should walk; for unto Thee have I lifted up my soul. Rescue me from mine enemies, O Lord; unto Thee have I fled for refuge. Teach me to do Thy will, for Thou art my God. Thy good Spirit shall lead me in the land of uprightness; for Thy name's sake, O Lord, shalt Thou quicken me. In Thy righteousness shalt Thou bring my soul out of affliction, and in Thy mercy shalt Thou utterly destroy mine enemies. And Thou shalt cut off all them that afflict my soul, for I am Thy servant.
Psalm 101. A prayer of the poor man. When he was despondent, and poured out his supplication before the Lord.
O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come unto Thee. Turn not Thy face away from me; in the day when I am afflicted, incline Thine ear unto me. In the day when I call upon Thee, quickly hearken unto me. For my days are vanished like smoke, and my bones consumed like wood for the burning. I am smitten like grass, and withered is my heart, for I forgot to eat my bread. By reason of the voice of my groaning, my bone hath cleaved unto my flesh. I am become like a pelican of the wilderness, I am like an owl in a ruined house. I have watched, and am like a sparrow that sitteth alone upon the house-top. The whole day long mine enemies reproached me, and they that praised me made an oath against me. For before the face of Thy wrath and Thine anger I ate ashes like bread, and my drink I mingled with weeping; for after uplifting me, Thou hast dashed me down. My days like a shadow have declined, and I like grass am withered. But Thou, O Lord, for ever abidest, and Thy remembrance is unto generation and generation. Thou shalt rise up and have pity upon Sion, for it is time to have compassion on her, yea, the time is come. For Thy servants have taken pleasure in her stones, and they shall feel pity for her dust. And the nations shall fear Thy name, O Lord, and all the kings of the earth Thy glory. For the Lord shall build up Sion, and He shall be seen in His glory. He hath regarded the prayer of the humble, and hath not despised their supplication. Let this be written for another generation, and the people that is being created shall praise the Lord. For He hath looked out from His holy height, the Lord from heaven hath looked upon the earth, To hear the groaning of them that be in fetters, to loose the sons of the slain, To declare in Sion the name of the Lord, and His praise in Jerusalem, When the peoples are gathered together, and the kings to serve the Lord. He answered Him in the way of his strength: The fewness of my days declare unto me. Take me not away at the half of my days; in generations and generations are Thy years. In the beginning, O Lord, Thou didst lay the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Thy hands. They shall perish, but Thou abidest; and all like a garment shall grow old, And as a vesture shalt Thou fold them, and they shall be changed; but Thou art the same, and Thy years shall not fail. The sons of Thy servants shall have their dwelling, and their seed for ever shall be guided aright.

2024.05.14 14:07 Rare_Manufacturer588 What are the rules regarding doctor-patient confidentiality if you are on workers compensation?

TLDR: GP gave insurer medical records about me without asking.
Background: I was involved with several incidents last year, which really impacted my health. I was paying for it out of my own pocket, but after some persuading by my mates I decided to go through workers comp. The specialist bills and rehab start to add up fast! So mostly just wanted help with that as I get back to normal. So I went to the GP and got him to fill out some paperwork.
As part of the application, you have to agree to let the insurer contact your doctors. I assumed that the process would be like: 1. Insurer writes to my GP 2. GP let's me know (in general terms) what they want. 3. I can say yes or no. Or, at least my GP would tell me shortly after the fact.
Sure, it might be better if the insurer has access to information. Otherwise it might look like I'd just made stuff up. But I still would've liked to be asked, or know it'd happened.
I wasn't asked. The insurer got a letter from my GP, a list of medications I take, and patient records about me. Some were related to the claim, and some weren't.
This all has me feeling a bit uncomfortable. I'm no longer seeing this GP. But I guess I wanted to know if it's normal? I have no idea because I've never been through anything like this before.
Things you might be wondering: My claim got accepted. Insurer said it wasn't because of my GP's letter. They said it was because of the independent medical exam I had to have.
Now seeing a new GP. But kind of wondering if I should be more careful about what information I share with GPs in future? Nothing to do with the claim, it was all above board. But like all people, I occasionally see doctors for things that are embarrassing.
I found out by accident. I got a call from an allied health professional I saw, asking if I was happy if they reply to the letter they got. I asked my GP if he also got a letter. He said yes, but only provided 'limited information' in response to it. I wasn't convinced so contacted the insurer to see copies of the correspondence, which they recently gave me.

2024.05.14 14:07 tinkerellabella Should I sell my house to make my husband happy

Hi Reddit,
I'm in need of some advice regarding my current marital situation and the potential sale of our home. To give you the full picture, I'll start from the beginning. Apologies for the length, but I feel all the details are necessary to understand the context.
I (29F) met my husband (40M) on Tinder four years ago. We dated for about eight months when my family had an opportunity to purchase a property. My then-boyfriend was also looking to be involved in a business deal of that sort, and he was interested in having his name on the property as well. My father supported this, seeing as how my boyfriend was a physician with a good income, and saw this as a way to bring him closer to our family. The opportunity came quickly, and we all signed the contract to purchase the house.
Trouble began shortly after this. My boyfriend requested that only he and I be on the title of the house, removing the rest of my family, as he saw a future with us and envisioned it as our potential family home. My father was very pleased to hear this and supported it, so we obliged. During this time, the property had increased in value, and I requested the other family members be paid off so we could buy out their shares. My boyfriend declined, feeling it was unfair.
To skim over some details, here are the highlights of the construction: My boyfriend paid more for the down payment than we initially realized would be required. Because of this, he paid no further construction costs. The construction proceeded with debt from my family until the construction loans came through. My family paid for the construction, and my father built the house for us without charging for his management services. My father was displeased with my boyfriend’s behavior and required him to pay more money for the construction due to inflation and the COVID shutdown. My boyfriend declined, and my mother and I secretly took out a line of credit to front the construction costs to my father, pretending it was from my boyfriend. Eventually, as we got the construction loans on a rolling basis after meeting construction milestones, my mother’s line of credit was paid off.
During this time, my family and I wondered why my boyfriend had not proposed. I decided that if he hadn't proposed by a certain time, I would leave him. Fortunately, he did propose on Valentine’s Day 2022. By spring of 2022, construction was coming to an end, and it was time for us to settle into the house. My fiancĂ© felt uncomfortable with how much money he had put into the house and was worried I could leave him and make a profit. I promised him I wouldn’t leave him, but it wasn’t enough. He said he would believe me if I had a child with him, otherwise women would leave men if there were no ties. I told him I would have a child with him right when we got married. He suggested I come off birth control, as it takes months for a woman’s cycle to normalize after being on birth control for many years. I promised him I would come off birth control.
Coming off birth control was more stressful than I realized. I was very hormonal, breaking out, and felt unlike myself. This contributed to my fiancĂ© and I fighting more than usual. In one particularly heated fight, I told him I would go back on birth control and even purchased the pills, but he told me he would break up with me if I did because he wanted to get to know the real me. I conceded, and then something switched in me and I became excited at the possibility of having a baby. I started tracking my cycle and figuring out my ovulation days. I shared this with my fiancĂ©, and on one of those days, we got pregnant. I didn’t find out until the end of summer 2022. When I did find out, I told my fiancĂ© and suggested we should probably get married.
My fiancĂ©'s first response was that we should wait to see if the baby sticks, and if it does, then we can plan a marriage but he wanted to wait until February 2023. I was very disappointed and angry and yelled at him. I felt alone and overwhelmed by the thought of having an illegitimate child. After discussing potentially getting an abortion, potentially breaking up, and potentially selling the house, I talked my fiancĂ© into keeping the baby and getting married. He also wanted to keep the baby but was afraid of our situation. After many fights about when to have the wedding, we finally decided on December 2022. At that point, I was four months pregnant. During this time, my fiancĂ© and I had major arguments that therapy couldn’t even remedy. We would yell at each other, slam doors, I would cry, and he would hold himself up in a room for hours. We had nice moments too, but they were heavily clouded over by the bad.
Finally, we got married, and things were good for a while. But then we faced some marital problems. My husband kept separate accounts and managed the finances himself. We had a joint credit card where I could pay for expenses without being questioned. He made all of the major investment decisions and major purchases. If I tried to disagree or speak up, he would get upset because this was not the submissive wife I had promised him I would be. I made significantly less money than him but lived a good lifestyle, buying almost anything I wanted within reason. Coming from a traditional family, I was upset that finances were kept separate. And so it continued that my husband would invest tens of thousands of dollars into our house so that his family from out of town would visit. We live in Vancouver, Canada, but his family is from Ottawa. In hopes of luring his youngest sister (of four) to Vancouver, my husband would make any modification to the house that his youngest sister showed the slightest interest in. This included a hot tub on the rooftop, a media system in the basement, a movie projector, and much more. After said sister got married, she made it clear that she would not move to Vancouver. Then a switch happened in my husband, and he suddenly wanted to sell the house.
Meanwhile, during all this time, I had my baby, and my husband and I were still fighting more than ever. I felt no support from him, and he felt drained by his work, our fights, and being away from his family. Recently, for the past three months, he has been consistently pushing for the sale of our house. This is where my dilemma lies. I am afraid to sell this house because my husband has kept finances separate, and the mortgage on this house has been serving as a way for me to feel secure. My husband contributes a monthly amount on a regular basis. He could have forced a sale in the past but didn’t, instead paying into the monthly mortgage on top of other bills. Now, he is considering forcing the sale of our house, but I am upset that he is citing financing as the issue when I have been begging him to save money instead of spending (his response is that $200,000 does not affect a $2M mortgage, and that he now feels burnt out and wants to retire sooner and live passively). If I agree to sell, I feel unstable about moving from our home given that my husband and I fight so frequently, and I am left alone to take care of the child. It is also worth noting that my parents live right across the street and come over frequently to help with the child, or I would go over to seek their help. My husband says that he feels abandoned and uncomfortable frequently because of our proximity to my parents, but I am because there have been times when I felt truly alone, and my parents were my only solace and support. My husband would ignore me for days, especially when I was postpartum and vulnerable. My parents now see my husband as someone who doesn’t put his wife and child first. My husband says that the massive mortgage we have is too stressful for him, and he can’t take that burden. I am sad that my husband will not consider keeping this house for another three years so that I can get comfortable with the idea of selling the house and that potentially I and my family can all move to Ottawa so that we can allow my husband to be closer to his family.
I don’t know what to do at this point, Reddit. I’m currently on extended maternity leave, but it ends in six months. My husband and I will have to come to an agreement about the house, otherwise, it is likely that he will force the sale of the house even if I’m not ready to move. I’ve consistently felt rushed and overlooked in this relationship. I am tired of being the small voice that does not impact decision-making. My husband is now being nice to me and trying to show me a good time, but I see it as him turning on his charming mode so that I can say yes to the sale of this house. I’m not sure what to do. Our fights and disagreements are so bad and the marriage feels like doom sometimes (never any physical violence). I sometimes questions even staying with him, but I worry for my daughter. He is a good father to her, when he is present and off his phone.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
TL;DR:
I need advice. I met my husband four years ago, and we bought a house together with my family's help. Financial disputes caused issues. Despite getting married and having a baby, we fight often. My husband handles our finances separately, spent a lot on the house, but now wants to sell it. I feel insecure about selling because the mortgage is like an investment to me, and also I rely on my parents, who live nearby, for help with our child. My husband feels stressed by the mortgage and feels homesick for his family 3000km away. I feel overlooked in decision-making and am unsure whether to agree to the sale, or to stand my ground and not sell. Sometimes I question staying in the marriage for my daughter’s sake, or if I should give up on this unhappy marriage.

2024.05.14 14:03 SamAllonsY Ssn after signing lease?

Hello, I viewed an apartment from Zillow on Thursday and did the application yesterday. I also had to put my ssn and stuff into a secure portal for a background check/credit report. The renter then wrote up the lease and I signed it. Right after that, they requested an ACH form for automatic rent payments to be withdrawn from an account and a generic "tenant summary form" which has a slot for ssn, dob, drivers license, etc. I'm obviously hesitant to send this over via a word doc to a generic email. Is providing my ssn after having signed the lease necessary?

2024.05.14 14:01 Elpizo- Q: Creating your OWN ID as a Freelancer

As the title suggests, may nag try na ba gumawa nang sarili nilang Valid ID nila as a freelancer? While I do have a business registration with BIR as a freelancer, wala akong DTI registration since hindi naman siya necessary required when you register as a freelancer. So bali yung full name ko mismo yung trade name ko.
Problem is though, whenever I submit applications na hinahanapan ako nang company ID (Credit Card, Loans, Etc), I often get rejected since wala akong ID. Kahit yung business registration ko yung ipakita ko as my "company ID", ayaw nila tanggapin.
That said, has anyone tried creating their own valid ID to address this dilemma? Like, literally whip something out from Canva, have it made into an official physical ID, and use it for these kinds of transactions?

2024.05.14 13:58 hikerguy2023 Credit cards declined by airline - trouble getting back to U.S.

My wife and her friend are currently in Ireland and need to come back early due to an injury. They are having a nightmare trying to change their flights because whatever credit card processing company Iceland Air uses, it keeps declining their cards.
I know two out of the three cards are VISA and ALL have a travel alert notice on the card. One was issued by a credit union, another by Bank of America. Three times now they've provided their cc info, it was accepted initially, then maybe an hour later they received a notification that it was declined.
This morning my wife's friend used yet another cc and it worked (well, at least for now).
Has anyone ever ran into a nightmare like this? Any suggestions on what they can do if this 4th cc is declined? Do all airlines use the same cc processing company?
I just can't believe their systems are so screwed up that they can't process three different credit cards, ALL of which have a travel alert and ALL of which have plenty of available credit.
The only option I can think of is to try another airline if this 4th cc gets declined, but I'm concerned it will get declined too if that airline uses the same cc system.

2024.05.14 13:58 jason_he54 What is considered “income” for college students?

I’m trying to get an Apple Card but one of the questions I was asked was regarding annual income. I have income from internships, but it’s a rather small amount.
I saw other people mention adding scholarships and financial aid onto your income and reporting that as your annual income. Is that something I could do?
For context, I will be attending college this coming Fall 2024 and was offered a significant amount of money in financial aid, all in the form of grants, no loans. Would that contribute towards my income for an Apple Card application, or would it only be through a job that I held in the past year?
If I do include grants as a part of my income, should I be waiting until Fall 2024 when those grants kick in for things like tuition, housing, food etc to apply for an Apple Card and list grants as a part of annual income?
I do intend to use an Apple Card like a debit card and just paying it off with available checking account balance. So I don’t really mind if I start with a lower limit bc of lack of history or credit score etc.

2024.05.14 13:57 MonitorPale1320 AITA for not inviting my cousins to my wedding?

My fiancé (m27) and I (F25) got engaged in October of last year. Our wedding is August of this year. We have always planned on having a small wedding as we are paying for everything ourselves. We also want our wedding to be child free so everyone can relax for the day and because we have a lot of cousins and friends with kids so inviting everyone would increase the head count significantly.
We discussed who we wanted to marry us pretty early into planning and decided it would be nice if my aunt/godmother (f42) would do it, because she made me her maid of honor when I was younger because I was there with her and helped her through her through her cancer treatment. She was ecstatic when we asked her and said yes.
For context, I was very close with my aunt and grandparents on this side of the family growing up. We have drifted apart in recent years since me and my fiancĂ© began dating and I moved out of my parents house at 18 with him. They wrote me letters openly expressing that they were unsupportive off my relationship when I moved out and stated that they “didn’t raise me to be like this” (they didn’t raise me) but we have moved past it in the past few years and started seeing them a bit more (usually once a year at Christmas.)
Anyways, after I sent the save the dates, ( my aunts was addressed to just her and my uncle and not their children since it is a child free event) my aunt texted me asking if her kids were invited. I responded “No, unfortunately, our wedding is going to be child free. I’m sorry!”
Immediately I got a call from my grandmother asking “why I’m doing this to our family.” I tell her our wedding is child free, my intention isn’t to hurt or target anyone. Basically tells me I need to stop being selfish and they won’t be able to come to my wedding because they won’t be able to find childcare. I told her I really hope they’ll be able to find childcare in the next 10 months because I would love for them to be there.
After I got off the phone with her, I texted my aunt apologizing for hurting her or the kids, explaining again that there are going to be no children at the event, and it had nothing to do with them in particular. I didn’t hear back.
I followed up with her 2 more times asking if she still was going to come to the wedding and marry us and I never heard back. I followed up a month later to let her know that because I never heard from her I found someone else to marry us. She called me a few hours later, but I wasn’t able to answer the phone. I sent a text saying we can talk on Saturday. I forgot to call her and she never reached out to me. We have not spoke at all since then.
I sent out my wedding invitations this week and my aunt RSVPed and declined their invitation. She also texted my mom and told her she isn’t coming to my wedding shower. I think it’s totally reasonable to have a child free wedding and to be selfish with who we invite. But maybe I’m missing something? Am I in the wrong for this?

2024.05.14 13:56 JoelSSmith282 Proof of Residency 0ending for 2 days.

Proof of Residency 0ending for 2 days.
Hey everyone, this is my first time financing any vehicle. I've always paid cash.
When I submitted my proof of residency documents, the application has been pending for 2 days. Most other posts online said they got approved in minutes, so I am confused.
A few things I'm thinking may have tripped Tesla up:
  • I put my wife and I down as owners of our home. Both of our names are on the home title. -However, all bills and the mortgage is under my wife's name. Specifically her maiden name. -We put her down on the mortgage and bills at the time because I didn't have credit. Now I have a 750+ credit score.
Do I need to reach out to Tesla to confirm this information, or do I just wait patiently.
Thanks.
