1 (15f) have absolutely nowhere to go for advice other than Reddit so here it is... About two months ago my friend, A, (15f) and I started talking to a senior, who we'll call Groomer, in one of our AP classes (he said he was 17 but I recently learned that he lied about his birthday and was 18 at the time). At first I just started talking to him because he was assigned to our table and I wanted to be nice. It wasn't too long before it became apparent that he was a transfer and had no friends so eventually we invited him to sit at our table during lunch. It was only a couple weeks before he made a sexual advance towards me (which I immediately declined and then proceeded to distance myself from him and warned A). Unfortunately, A and another friend B(14f) didn't make the same decision. A has really bad issues and often seeks out "relationships" with adult men, B has never been approached for any sort of relationship before and clearly finds the whole situation exciting. In the following weeks, Groomer has unprotected sex with both A and B (whilst lying to A about his relationship with B). B knew about Groomer's relations with A but saw it as a challenge and still decided to lie to A about their "relationship". Two weeks ago Groomer got expelled for vaping and since learning about the situation with B, A has stopped most contact with Groomer but B is currently meeting up and having relations with him. I've begged B to stop but every time it's brought up she just gets mad at me and becom V aggressive. This whole situation stresses me out and while I feel my empathy for B waning at this point, l'm directing all my rage at Groomer and I just want Groomer to pay. I desperately need advice. I was considering informing Groomer's parents about the situation but I don't know if that's going to be effective. Involving the cops (I live in the US) seems extreme but I’m not quite sure what else to do.

I've recently had a "falling out" with two of my closest friends who I've known separately for over a decade; I had also introduced them to each other and to many people in our pre-COVID community. Here are the facts of the recent events (everyone in this story is 30+ years old):

• I started seeing my partner (love of my life) 2.5 years ago. My partner is very friendly and kind and was excited to meet my friends. I noticed that my friend Claire was stand-offish about my relationship from the get-go, which I inquired about and she said it was because she was still recovering from her own breakup (from an emotionally abusive relationship).
• A couple of months after I met my now partner, I asked my roommate and good friend Gill to move out with 2 months notice. Context here: I invited her to move into my small 2-bedroom apartment about a year into COVID and she said she'd only stay a few months while she planned her move to another nearby city. She passively pushed the timeline back a few times (ie "as you can see, I haven't moved out yet, I think it'll be a few more months") which I was happy about at first because I enjoyed her company...until she started working from home full-time (which I already did) and also began struggling with mental health issues. So, I set the 2-month timeline. The rest of the story is that she flipped out after this conversation, left for a trip to visit family the next day, sent me a long angry email about how I've displaced her (a working professional and therapist) and that she found a place in the new city and would move out in 2 weeks. I kept my distance from her those two weeks and sent her an email saying that my intentions were not to hurt her, that I cared about her, and that I wanted to repair the relationship once she was ready; she sent a positive reply back. Then I never hear from her again and meanwhile heard from others that she was having a hard time "because of what I did to her".
• Fast forward a few months and I notice that Claire and my other close friend Jen - both of whom considered me a close/best friend and were not that close to my roommate - start actively avoiding me. They both stopped responding to my group messages and were "too busy" to hang out or jump on a call; but if I reached out to each of them directly, their respective texts are all friendly with lots of emojis. I even left a birthday present for Jen at her place (because she was too busy to see me) and she didn't acknowledge receiving it, just ignored my text message asking how she liked it.
• I definitely noticed this sudden change in behavior in both of them but I didn't know how to ask about it; their behavior felt punitive in some way and I felt scared to face it head on...for over a year. Until this week.
• Claire lives 2 blocks from me and I saw her heading my way the other evening - I was the only one outside - and she put her head down and "didn't see" me. I was floored. I got home and wrote her a text saying that it hurt to feel that she was actively avoiding me. She responded by saying that she "felt us growing apart", that she "didn't like how I treated close friends of ours", and that instead of having an "inflammatory conversation" she'd chosen to "love and support me from afar". Floored again. This one felt crushing. More context for you: I care deeply for people in my life and live my values of treating people kindly, empathetically, and with good communication. This text from my "close friend" absolutely shocked me. I responded with confusion and curiousity as to why she didn't talk to me about whatever it was she heard/witnessed, and also stated that suddenly disappearing form my life was niether loving nor supportive. My only assumption is that it has to do with Gill but I have no idea. All she said in response was in short "Thank you for speaking your truth <3 I wish you wonderful things." 💩
• Then I reached out to Jen. Jen has always seemed like a direct communicator, and she also is a high anxiety person. So this whole time, I assumed she might actually have been busy with work and life, and/or dealing with anxiety. I texted to say I was checking in because I hadn't heard from her in a long time and wasn't sure why - busy or did something happen?" She responded 24 hours later (last night) and gave me the same spiel as Claire "growing apart", "doesn't agree with my actions and treatment of friends". Floored AGAIN.
• I responded saying that I'm confused as to what she's referring to and I feel sad that she'd choose to distance herself instead of talk to me about whatever it is. Then I said "I value clarity and this sounds like a significant thing so can you please provide specifics around the actions and treatment you're referring to?"

I honestly have no idea what planet I'm on at the moment. I have what I thought were stable, mature adult relationships that would be with me for a lifetime. For two of my closest friends to form judgements about me (about something I have no idea about), not communicate with me about it, then actively ostracize me, is not only heartbreaking but makes me question my reality. Any advice on how to process this and let it go?

Honest question. Recently I was invited by my FWB in their birthday party. He said I was just a friend with benefit and didn't want to be locked in a monogamous relationship, yet all his gestures sent me mixed messages: hang out together, planning to travel together, cooking for me, giving me the things he know I really like as a souvenir from his travels, etc

They both stopped responding to my group messages and were "too busy" to hang out or jump on a call; but if I reached out to each of them directly, their respective texts are all friendly with lots of emojis. I even left a birthday present for Jen at her place (because she was too busy to see me) and she didn't acknowledge receiving it, just ignored my text message asking how she liked it.
• I definitely noticed this sudden change in behavior in both of them but I didn't know how to ask about it; their behavior felt punitive in some way and I felt scared to face it head on...for over a year. Until this week.
• Claire lives 2 blocks from me and I saw her heading my way the other evening - I was the only one outside - and she put her head down and "didn't see" me. I was floored. I got home and wrote her a text saying that it hurt to feel that she was actively avoiding me. She responded by saying that she "felt us growing apart", that she "didn't like how I treated close friends of ours", and that instead of having an "inflammatory conversation" she'd chosen to "love and support me from afar". Floored again. This one felt crushing. More context for you: I care deeply for people in my life and live my values of treating people kindly, empathetically, and with good communication. This text from my "close friend" absolutely shocked me. I responded with confusion and curiousity as to why she didn't talk to me about whatever it was she heard/witnessed, and also stated that suddenly disappearing form my life was niether loving nor supportive. My only assumption is that it has to do with Gill but I have no idea. All she said in response was in short "Thank you for speaking your truth <3 I wish you wonderful things." 💩
• Then I reached out to Jen. Jen has always seemed like a direct communicator, and she also is a high anxiety person. So this whole time, I assumed she might actually have been busy with work and life, and/or dealing with anxiety. I texted to say I was checking in because I hadn't heard from her in a long time and wasn't sure why - busy or did something happen?" She responded 24 hours later (last night) and gave me the same spiel as Claire "growing apart", "doesn't agree with my actions and treatment of friends". Floored AGAIN.
• I responded saying that I'm confused as to what she's referring to and I feel sad that she'd choose to distance herself instead of talk to me about whatever it is. Then I said "I value clarity and this sounds like a significant thing so can you please provide specifics around the actions and treatment you're referring to?"

I honestly have no idea what planet I'm on at the moment. I have what I thought were stable, mature adult relationships that would be with me for a lifetime. For two of my closest friends to form judgements about me (about something I have no idea about), not communicate with me about it, then actively ostracize me, is not only heartbreaking but makes me question my reality.

I (36F) and Ben (36M) have been friends since elementary school, and our bond deepened throughout high school. There has never been any romantic involvement between us. I've had several relationships: my first lasted about three years, the second about a year, and then I dated my husband for around ten years before we got married. He reassured me that I had done nothing wrong but admitted that my presence caused tension in their relationship. He suggested me to try inviting Angela out more.
Despite efforts to include Angela in our gatherings, she consistently declined invitations or canceled last minute, citing various reasons. Eventually, she accused us of bullying her (for a date she is free) and shared our conversations with her friends, further straining my friendship with Ben. When I asked him about this, he said he "wouldn't have known that she felt pressure from our invitations". Feeling exhausted by the situation, I distanced myself from both Ben and Angela.
In January 2023, Ben casually mentioned a trip he and Angela took and dropped off a souvenir for me. After that, neither of us reached out until later in 2023 when he attempted to arrange a dinner for my husband's birthday. I suggested Ben get in touch with my husband, as it wasn't my birthday, but honestly, we were unsure how to interact with Ben, so we didn't reply.
Earlier this year, I communicated to Ben once more that I wouldn't actively extend invitations to Angela. I'm indifferent if Angela decides to join (frankly, I'd prefer she didn't). (Btw, the moment I said this, Ben immediately said “I tried reaching out to you but was ignored”). We've had group dinners twice earlier this year with Angela attending both times (somehow, she's becoming more present). On a third occasion, it was for my birthday. I'm puzzled why she was even there as it resulted in an uncomfortable meal with just the four of us. I refrained from initiating conversations due to uncertainty regarding topics that might provoke Angela. If I directed questions to Ben about his family, she interjected, responding for him. I quietly suggested to my husband that they might be engaged, given the ring on her finger. While I excused myself to the washroom after the meal, my husband inquired about it and, lo and behold, they've been engaged since their 2022 trip. Ben nonchalantly mentioned he had multiple proposal plans and confirmed they would've disclosed it if any of us asked. Of note, we DID inquire during our recent group meals; we were just ignored.
Afterwards, I messaged Angela to offer congratulations and inquire about their upcoming plans, but she seemed reluctant to share. I tried to ask about her family and she merely acknowledged my messages with emojis. When I informed Ben of this, he advised me to stick to topics like dogs and video games with her. Then he went silent as well.
At this point, I'm completely disillusioned. I've been searching for a conclusive reason to sever ties with Ben, and now I have it. I feel deeply betrayed and hurt. I confided in two other friends from our circle, declaring my decision to cut ties. One suggested I let it slide and attend Ben's wedding as a casual acquaintance if invited. However, I refused, stating I couldn't celebrate someone I'm not genuinely happy for.
I finally made the decision to remove Angela from my contacts and erased her number. I'm planning to do the same with Ben.
WIBTA if I simply cut ties with Ben without explanation? Or should I confront him once more about our severed friendship? (Though I'm hesitant, knowing he'll likely become defensive and shift blame onto me).

I (23 F) have been friends with this woman (23 F lets call her BEBE) since my freshmen year of high school. After high school, we still remained good friends and really we became closer after graduating hs. We ended up going to different universities, BEBE decided to go to a private university out of state and I decided to stay in state for college. BEBE dropped out of school during the second semester of freshman after struggling academically, and financially to keep up with tuition, and as a result, she began to struggle mentally. During BEBE's time out of school, she went to a community college on and off due to not being able to keep her grades up and she lost scholarships because her grades were too low so she had to work to pay for community college (she still stays at home and her mom was not helping her pay for school anymore since she was still paying off the loan from the university). Our friend group suggested that she take a break from school to get right mentally and financially. We have had multiple conversations about comparing her journey to others and how we are all on our own timeline. Right before my undergraduate graduation BEBE car was repoed and our other friend (lets call her Mia) had a birthday so I know it would have been difficult for her to attend my undergraduate graduation, she also said that it would have been difficult for her mentally to attend because she wasn't graduating. I respected that at the time. I was accepted into a one-year accelerated graduate program. During that one extra year of school, BEBE came down to my school to party multiple times, we took roads trips, and attended family events with each other (every time I would drive back home I tried my best to see her, like EVERYTIME even seeing her over my own best friend sometimes because she stayed closer to my mom's house). As my graduate graduation is approaching I told my friend group that I wouldn't be able to attend Mia's birthday plans this year because I had work, finals, and my graduation was the weekend following her birthday(which was on a Friday) ( honestly I was completely overwhelmed with a lot of things at the time and I was completely transparent about how overwhelmed I was feeling). I had told them multiple times that my graduation was coming up but BEBE and Mia never even acknowledged I said anything about my graduation ( I never gave them details because they never asked and honestly I wasn't expecting them to come because they didn't attend last year). On top of that my car was stolen right before I had to go and take a final exam, THREE days before my graduation, and the day before Mia's birthday this year, I was literally devastated and really just needed my family and friends support. We have a group chat ( Me, BEBE, Mia, and our other friend Sarah). In the group chat, the day of my graduate graduation, Mia was upset with Sarah because she fell asleep on Mia's birthday plans (activity was scheduled for 8 PM but it didn't happen until 11:30 PM), Mind you Sarah stays about 45-60 mins away from the activity and was waiting for them to tell her to leave out. BEBE follows up with a message saying that it felt like nobody cared about Mia's birthday. So I responded by saying I apologize for not being as enthusiastic about Mia's birthday this year but it was literally because I was overwhelmed which I expressed to them before that day and that I was dealing with my car being stolen (I haven't told them up until this point because I had no time to process this on top of making sure I finish my classes strong and I was still quite upset about it and didn't want to keep thinking about it). They never acknowledged my message... so I sent another text saying how I was upset that they didn't put in any effort to come to either of my graduations. after that BEBE and Mia were saying they felt the friendship was unequal, they were never formally invited, and that they weren't talking to me originally but yet they kept using "yall" and using other plural words instead of messaging Sarah separately or being direct. Mind you this is a couple hours before my graduation and they still didn't even acknowledge that it's my graduation day, didn't get a congratulation or even checked to see if I was okay after having my car stolen and expressing to them I was overwhelmed. Then BEBE and Mia started saying why should they tell me congratulations soo early when they didn't know what time my graduation was and the fact I didn't tell Mia happy birthday until the evening time on her actual birthday ( less not forget my car was stolen the day before and I was also at work trying to make calls to my insurance agent ). I never formally gave them details because they never asked or even acknowledged I said anything about my graduation. Then they went on to say they didn't even have a ride to my graduation but im like yall could've rode with Sarah but then BEBE goes she had to look after her 16 year old twin brothers......... and she wasn't attending no ones graduation because she isn't graduating. Personally I feel that is so selfish!!!!!! like I understand she's not graduating but like I just needed my friends' support during a difficult time. her saying she couldn't celebrate my accomplishments and perseverance because she's not where she wants to be in life is so not fair and it feels like she's in secret competition with me. BEBE states like she still mentally is struggling to deal with graduation season and personally I just feel like I am struggling mentally too and I have been a good friend to her through all her mental break downs so her not showing up for me is her simply being a fake friend, only wanting to party, drink, and smoke but when I needed her just to show up as a friend (and not for her to compare her life to mine) she couldn't and I am so disappointed. She ended up leaving the group chat and I am willing to lose this friendship because I feel I have really show up her on so many different occasions whether it be mentally and even financially. I'll explain why and how the fight started. Please tell me if I am in the wrong or if I should apologise and get back together.
The story:
I took a break from working for like a couple months. Since I am "free", my partner wants me to spend time with them mostly and wants all my attention. We have been going out for almost a year now.
So, we hang out for like 8 hours a day (my partner works from home). Once I get back home, they will facetime me after dinner and we talk until we sleep. But I don't get to do anything I want to.
They usually don't like me spending time with my friends. We have gotten into a lot of arguments cuz I'm on call with my friends while they try to call.
The actual conflict:
My friend had her birthday a week ago. I don't hang out with my friends that often cuz I am always with my partner. So, my friends made this birthday party plan a month prior to get everyone on board. This plan wasn't even a full day plan. It was like a half day plan and we'd get home in the evening.
When we go out with friends, we usually don't know what we're gonna do. We make plans as we go. So, We didn't make a detailed plan. We just knew we're going to the beach. That's it.
So, I told my partner about this and they were okay. But on the day I was supposed to go to the party, they started asking me questions about where we are going, what we'll be doing and everything.
Them asking questions was not a problem for me. I answered everything. But they felt as if I did not want to share that information to them and that's why I didn't tell them myself.
When I told them we don't know what we'd be doing, they were like, "you just don't wanna share it with me. It's fine. You made the plan anyway right?". I did not make the plan. And when I tried to prove it to them that we did not have a solid plan that day. They did not even want to hear me out.
My partner clearly did not want me to go. So, I texted the birthday girl that I won't be joining them. She understood that my partner is that way.
Meanwhile, my partner and I started screaming at each other. One thing led to another and finally when they said "dont cancel your plans for me, go, be with your awesome friends".
I got fed up. My friends have been with me for over 10 years. They understand what type of situation I'm in. You still pull their leg in our fight?
I just told them "my friends are awesome whether you like it or not". That's it. They slammed a chair against the wall.
I was frustrated and was done with this shit. I just told them that we're breaking up and left.
I did not know where to go. I wanted to cry. My parents were at my home. I haven't told them about my partner. So, I called my friend and asked if could come over
She was getting ready to go out. I went there, cried for more than an hour. And my friend said "look, you have been crying for so long. They haven't tried to call or text you at all. They blocked you on insta. Enough is enough. Come with us"
So, I went with them to the beach. Meanwhile, my partner started calling me. I was with the friends of the birthday girl. So, I didn't answer the call cuz I know my partner would scream at me. And I was not ready for that call infront of strangers.
They kept calling me non stop and when I finally answered. They told me they were waiting outside my house. When I told them I came with my friends they started yelling, screaming, cursing.
I took my stance and told them it's over. But they still kept calling and told me that they are the only one fighting for this relationship. They started to self harm themselves and that made me leave my friends and book a cab to their place.
Even while I was on the cab they still called me names. Asked me not to come. They said " took you long enough to leave your awesome friends and look at me"
After a while I couldn't take it anymore and i just went straight home.
Then, they got even angry and pulled up outside my house. Remember, my parents came to visit. So, they were Standing outside. I asked them to come in and have a convo, they refused. My mom and dad came out and invited them in. They still refused.
They told me, "you went out to the beach with your friends right? I want you to come to the beach with me right now". (P.s. it was 10pm at the time)
I didn't go. And it made them even mad. They started cussing and said I prioritise my friends over them.
This fight happened for about 30 mins before they left. Then we didn't speak for a while.
After few days, we made up. They told me that I don't love them enough and constantly compared me to their ex's.
Yesterday, they found an insta reel that my friend posted of that day in the beach. I didn't tell them about it cuz I didn't want to start a fight again. We both knew that this topic brought conflict. My partner saw the reel and said "I was miserable that day and you had fun???"
I was miserable that day too. The girls at the party who I barely knew also were asking me if something was wrong or if they could help. I actually ruined their party. I was crying. Always on the phone with my partner cuz they kept on calling.
But my partner now thinks I have betrayed them while they stayed loyal cuz they've never been loyal to any of their ex's. They tell me I have never been grateful of them. That I was enjoying while they were miserable trying to hurt themself.
I did try to have a conversation about this. But they won't understand my side of the story.
And when I told them I can't keep coming to their place every single day cuz I need to take care of some stuff. They flip out saying "you be with your family. You be with your awesome friends. Don't ever come to me. Why do you need me anyway"
When I facetimed them today, they faced the camera to the wall and never spoke a word. And finally, they sent a text saying that they will stop everything they did for me. And left a good bye message.
Now, back to the question:
Please tell me if I am in the wrong or if I should apologise and get back together????

The Academy looked normal enough from the distance but blew Gentry’s mind when she finally entered it. First of all, the way in lay through a massive winter garden full of the most luxurious botanical collection she’s ever seen. Not only that, but it seemed to be arranged in a way that offered spaces for hanging out as well as paths in and out. Here and there, G noticed little nooks with people’s voices coming from them and small murmuring streams gleamed in the sun that blazed through the transparent walls and roof. This place looked magical and invited to stay, enjoy the refreshing coolness and peace of mind. But Gentry had a good enough rest in her communal room the night before and was eager to start working on her first assignment that the System had spat out with a congratulating letter. Figuring out the controls of her new wristcomm was simple enough.

Without stopping to check if the vending machines offered anything good, G made her way through the dreamy garden and entered the inner yard that looked just like everything here: nothing too eye-catching at first glance but secrets hidden everywhere.
One thing she had already noticed was that most of the people had another piece of technology on their bodies besides the comm on their wrists: a sort of extendable visor that some of them kept engaged at all times. Those who were focused on the screen had a comical look on their faces, a thousand-mile stare, eyes wide even as they were talking to each other or going about their business. It was unclear yet why they would engage the screen for so long though. No one needed this much time to read a notification or check a map.
Take a group of young students by the fountain, for example. They seemed deep in conversation with each other yet their pupils didn’t focus on the person in front, but on the translucent screen over the top part of their faces. Was it some kind of virtual reality helmet?
If so, G needed one, too.
Perhaps she’d be able to make new friends this way.
There was something else that caught Gentry’s eye. Despite her initial disappointment about the severe lack of male hotness in the streets, people of both sexes seemed to really care about their appearance. Even those who probably weren’t naturally stunning were very interesting to look at not least because of the crazy fashion sense everyone here had. Never before had G seen so much variety in what everyone wore: countless variations on different national garments, some looking very traditional, like something one could see in a theatre, some — futuristic uniforms straight out of a sci-fi movie. It didn’t seem like anyone was concerned with gender norms here, too. At least in when it came to the outfits.
G hoped she didn’t look like a creepy stalker when her gaze lingered on a pair of very nicely shaped legs stretching from underneath a plaid skirt that belonged to a young man in the group sat by the edge of the water. A pair of snow-white knee-highs, flat loafers and neat raven hair with some blue streaks completed the image. His clothes fit him very well and weren’t inappropriate in the least: something an old money university student would wear.
A female student that is.
And he wasn’t alone. Here and there, among more conventionally dressed people, there were people wearing all sorts of things: a crazy mix of goth-like apparel but barefoot, men and women with heads covered with scarves, people in strange jewelery that looked like it weighed a ton and so on. Most importantly, no one seemed to care what the others looked like.
Was it paradise? Looks like the demo didn’t lie: it was heaven on earth.
The young man in the middle of the student gaggle caught her staring after all. With a dazzling smile, he waved in her direction as if they were great friends, and G waved back, face heating, hoping there wasn’t anyone behind her this tease was actually waving at. Thank god his shoes weren’t heeled, otherwise she would definitely have a heart attack right here, in the middle of the common area, on her first day.
Did he notice her ogling his legs? Judging by the giggles of his friend's entourage, they all did. The young flirt covered his mouth, eyes wide in mock indignation and pulled his knees in, as if hiding them from the improper attention, getting even more laughter from the rest of the company. G averted her eyes and tried to calm her breathing as she was on her way through the yard again, but before they all disappeared from her field of view, she noticed the coquette stretch his legs again and fall back on a friend of his, embracing the lucky man’s neck in an affectionate gesture, already forgetting G existed.
There was no way she wasn’t going to make some pretty boy do the same for her. Forget the assignment, put that in the list of her top priorities!
At first, Gentry was lost when she failed to find any kind of class schedule and there was no one to ask at the reception desk.
Why have a reception desk if nobody’s on duty?
Soon, however, it occurred to her that there was no schedule: each room within the wide marble corridors had a small display with a handwritten message scribbled on it.

None of these were the Communications course that Jey was talking about, but the variety definitely made G’s eyebrows go up.
Was she just supposed to barge into any class and sign up? Did she have to sign up later if she liked the subject? Was it ok to choose any?
After some wandering around, too scared to just walk in uninvited or ask others for directions, she finally stumbled across the door saying:

With the desks arranged in a horseshoe and the people of various ages that were also apparently Newcomers, it all seemed comfortably casual. Everyone was chatting as she walked in, paying G no mind so she busied herself with the wristcomm that dinged at exactly the right time to save her the embarrassment of looking for a desk.

Was this damn thing a spying device? Did it just know which room she was in? Jey didn’t joke when she said the little thing was going to be her primary aid!
“Are you looking for somewhere to sit?” called a young red-haired woman at one of the paired desks. “Here, this one is free.” She had the auglasses on, like everyone else, but they were off, showing her lively face and a pair of sharp green eyes.
“Thanks,” G said, gratefully taking the offer. “I’m new here, don’t know how things work yet.”
“It’s alright, the course is very engaging, you’ll love it.” — the woman held out a hand — “I’m Sereen, what’s your name?”
G shook the warm palm. “It’s Gentry. And by new I mean I’m new to Ashtapada, not just the course. Literally arrived yesterday.”
“Really?” — S looked surprised — “Everything must be very confusing!”
“You have no idea,” G smiled. “I’m glad someone understands. Everyone’s friendly but acts as if giant mechanical dogs in the streets and a moss garden in the lobby are the most normal things ever.”
“Don’t worry, I was just like you when I first arrived, you’ll get the hang of it soon.”
“Hope so! Is that the lecturer?”
“Shhh...”
Just like everything else in Ashtapada, the lecture started out normal enough only to unfold into something completely alien to how things were normally done.
Apparently, the Communications course involved learning rationality, debating, logic, etiquette and god knew what else. It was supposed to give the future citizens tools to, well, communicate. G was given a booklet with some ground rules for beginners that included entries that sounded like something Sun Tzu would say if he studied debating instead of warcraft.
“The purpose of any argument is not to win it and not to change the other disputant’s mind. It’s to find the truth.”
“Always argue in good faith.”
“Don’t attack your opponent.”
“If attacked, dismiss the attack as if it didn’t happen.”
Well, hopefully, it only meant verbal attacks! G knew too well that when it came to physical violence, it was hard to ignore it.
Most of the rules looked straightforward enough, some were confusing.
“Seek challenge to your convictions. Avoid echo chambers.”
“Don’t seek being right.”
“Be mindful of your audience including yourself.”
“Avoid “Empty arguments” that don’t bring everyone closer to the goal of finding the truth.”
The lecturer, a willowy man of about sixty that drowned in his tweed jacket, started the class with a bit of small talk with the regulars after distributing the booklets to all first-timers. He made sure to give it to G face down so that his photo under the “About the author” title didn’t go unnoticed. He also made most of the “talk” part himself.
“I never took part in a debate,” G told Sereen, who was patiently waiting for the class to begin. “And never seen anything like these rules. Is it actually useful?”
“Oh, believe me, professor Poe will be ecstatic to talk to you about them. He can’t not start discussing his subject at the slightest provocation. Look.” — she raised her hand — “Professor, how was your weekend?”
The man wearily smiled. “That might seem like a meaningless question, Sereen, but it’s actually very much related to the topic we are going to cover today.”
“See?” — S raised her eyebrows with a suppressed smile. G giggled. This promised to be interesting.
“Our friend Sereen is a very polite person, isn’t she?” — Poe smiled at the class but his eyes glided over everyone’s faces, gaze turned inwards like he was reading an invisible text written on the walls. “But as kind as she is, I don’t think she’s actually interested in how my weekend went. Small talk is just a social custom we engage in to strengthen our social relations. Why don’t we just start a day by saying “Hi! I value our relationship and would like to fulfill my societal role!” to everyone we know? I would definitely prefer THAT over the small talk! He-he!”
The audience laughed politely. The guy seemed alright.
“However, just as we use different tools to fulfill this role in different contexts, so can the context of a logical problem steer our thinking towards a rational, that is, right, and an irrational, that is, wrong, answer.”
“Well, that’s not a given,” Gentry mumbled under her breath but it went unnoticed by S, who was already immersed in the lecture.
“Consider the famous René Descartes’s quote "Cogito, ergo sum". Who can translate it from Latin?” — the board behind the thin, almost transparent man glowed, displaying the words.
“Is it really a Beginner’s course?” G asked Sereen in a low voice but her companion was already raising her hand, together with a dozen other students.
“I think, therefore I am,” she said after a curt nod of the lecturer’s permission.
“Very good,” he continued, pleased. “I taught you well. Those of you who attend my lectures regularly are familiar with the notion of solipsism, which states that the only thing we can be sure about is our own thoughts.”
Gentry looked at S with raised eyebrows.
If this is an introductory course, what was the advanced like?
Sereen didn’t seem to perplexed. She was fully following the thread.
“However,” professor Poe said. “I am going to challenge that notion by demonstrating that we can’t trust our own mind when it comes to perceiving reality.”
He looked at the audience with a quizzical eye, and pointed at Gentry with a long bony finger “You, new girl. I want you to close your eyes.”
Why her?
Gentry was only happy to hide behind her eyelids. No doubt the whole room was now staring at her.
Through the blood rushing in her ears, she heard the old man’s voice, “Who was sitting beside you before you closed your eyes?”
“My new friend Sereen,” G answered and heard a little gasp of appreciation from the woman.
“So you know she existed as long as you two were whispering behind my back. However, now that you can’t see or hear her. How do you know she exists?”
“Well, I can reach with my hand and touch her,” Gentry said, demonstrating.
“Yes, this is what most people answer,” Poe said. “You can open your eyes now. But let me ask you this: how would you know it was her, an not some other person that took her place?”
Gentry’s intuition was right: everyone was staring, as if waiting for her answer.
“Well, I suppose— ”
“Hush, it was a rhetorical question,” the professor cut her off. “The correct answer is that you can’t know that. We think we can trust our senses or at least our thoughts, but this is also false. Everyone, look out of the window.”
Everyone did.
The day was as fine as Gentry was annoyed.
What did this pops think of himself?
“I’d ask what you see, but I already know the answer,” he went on. “All of you would say “the sky”. And all of you would be wrong, because sky doesn’t exist. We only see the endless emptiness of the outer space, but perceive it as a blue dome. It’s an illusion, a phantom, born out of our collective unconscious.”
Sereen whispered, lost in the lecture, “Ah, yes, Carl Jung.”
What?
Was it supposed to be obvious?
“But listen to this,” he continued, voice booming like a demiurge’s in the completely silent room. “Listen to this. How many words is it? Listentothis. Our common sense says it’s three words while in reality it’s just a string of sounds I an producing with my mouth. I am literally making you hallucinate the spaces between the words I’m saying. With knowing that our perception is so flawed, how can we know that we even know how to think?”
“I’m sorry, professor, I disagr...” G started but got struck down by his serrated gaze.
“I’ll invite questions at the end, young miss,” he chopped out.
Sereen’s eyes were sympathetic. It looked like most if not all of professor Poe’s students had learned not to interrupt him.
He went on, “Anyway, the fact that you even understand what I am saying is in itself incredible and shouldn’t be possible.”
“But it IS possible, right?” G whispered to Sereen. “I mean, aren’t we understanding this as he speaks?”
“PLEASE refrain from talking unless asked!” professor Poe roared.
Impressive lung capacity for such a frail human being!
G begrudgingly did as she was told. The guy seemed to be enjoying this power trip a bit too much to her taste.
“Now, since most of you,” he put some emphasis on the word to shut up another pair of whispering students. “Most of you think you comprehend my words, you must know that there is a way to tell that something is real, even though we can’t rely on our senses for perception. I’m giving you a minute to discuss with your partners what it might be.”
G considered it. She and Sereen exchanged equally confused glances.
Like a dutiful student, S started summarising Poe’s arguments but Gentry listened with only half an ear. She felt that behind all this over-thinking was a clear and simple answer.
She watched the professor walk along the aisles, tuning into one or another conversation before leaving each with a smug head shake of disapproval.
What was there to think about? Even if they didn’t see the world precisely as it was, something was definitely real, right? The chair she felt under her buttocks, the air around, the low murmur of the students. The annoying professor that… looked a little too translucent.
Gentry waited for the man to approach their desks and tune into Sereen’s musings. As he came so near they could reach out and touch him, Gentry did just that.
To her utter shock, her hand went through the old jacket and sent a wave of static over the professor’s figure, his whole form glitching and flickering.
Professor Poe was a hologram!
Unable to help herself, Gentry said, “No wonder you don’t think anything is real, Professor, you are hardly real yourself!”
The whole roomful of people stared, transfixed, at the surreal scene of a student’s arm disappearing into the teacher’s abdomen.
Gentry looked back at Sereen in search of support.
Was it laughter in her eyes?
Poe’s blood drained from his face, the mouth slacked open, twitching as if trying to form some words, but none came out.
Sereen chimed in, “You never told us you were a simulation, Professor.”
“Out!” Poe gritted lowly so that no one really heard him.
“I’m sorry?” G asked, innocently.
“Out of my class!” he exploded, jumping out of Gentry’s reach with an enraged grimace. “I am as real as you are!”
G stood up and looked at her hand then back at Professor Poe.
How much rage could storm in those watery eyes?
Then, she winked at her new friend.
“Let’s go then, shall we?” she said.
Sereen looked lost for a second, her eyes darting pack and forth between Gentry and Poe. Then, her gaze seemed to cloud a little, as if she retreated into her own head, but when she resurfaced, she nodded with a mischievous smile.
Both young women left the room, the classmates’ sympathetic silence and Poe’s angry seething seeing them off.

“What a way to start my first day,” Gentry said. “My hands are still trembling a bit.”
She and S were calming their nerves in the green winter garden, the soothing sound of the little running streamlet at their feet a welcome distraction.
“Believe it or not, his course is actually quite useful,” Sereen laughed. “Who would have thought the old Poe is actually not human? I guess we never thought of poking him in the stomach before. This is going to be the talk of the Academy for the next month or so!”
“Is it? I feel bad now. I guess I’m not getting any points for attending this lecture, right?” — Gentry checked her wristcomm — “It says “zero progress” and something else… ad.. Honi… adhonim…”
Sereen laughed, “Yeah, you adhominem’ed good old Poe, no wonder you got zero credit!”
“What does it mean?”
“You’ve seen the rules of learning and discourse, right?” S said. “There are no-nos, things that aren’t allowed, especially when it comes to Rationality classes and the like. Ad Hominem means an attack on the speaker, not their argument. It isn’t exactly what you did, but I guess it’s the closest thing!”
“Ad Hominem, huh,” G said. “Well, I guess I deserve it then. Thanks for standing by me.”
If it wasn’t for Sereen, G wasn’t sure she would be going to return to the Academy any time soon!
“You just chose a wrong course as your first class, G,” — no doubt about that! — “But another lecturer who works here is much more open-minded and he also teaches Rationality. I think you’ll enjoy him more than our old Poe. His next class is in a couple of days. Wanna come?”

Hey all, this is pretty much my first time searching for help on reddit. Cant really sleep right now because of that, so maybe you guys can help me, would really appreciate some neutral opinions.
I am getting married to my long-time girlfriend in one month. We have been together for 12 years now and I couldnt be any happier. There were not really any problems during the preparation for the wedding, except a little discussion regarding the guest list. She meant, that my Aunt and her husband havent done anything for me in the last 28years of life. Well, she is right tbh. I never got a birthday call or anything like that. We see each other like 2-3times a year at family meetings etc.. Normal conversation, but not really much more, hope you understand.
I kinda feel bad for my grandma tho. She will celebrate her birthday next week and called me today and asked me if I want to come, even tho my aunt(her daughter) is also coming. I asked her, why she would think thats a problem and she responded "well you didnt invite her to your wedding, I was thinking there is some bad blood around".
I hate myself right now for not inviting them because I hate bad blood and drama. And I feel sorry for my grandma the she has to witness this. My grandmas brother(I do have a really good relationship with him) called me and said, that I have to invite them, since its family. When I responded, that they didnt give a single shit about me for the last 28years, he again said:"Doenst matter,its family, you have to invite family to your wedding".
Is he right? AITAH for not inviting them?

So I’m turning 31 this Friday and scheduled two weeks ago a fishing tournament for all my friends including my brother. We both work incredibly demanding jobs and don’t get much time off. Our friend group also doesn’t get to see each other very often as we all work and some travel for work a lot.
My brother is not close with his in laws. They are racist, religious fanatics and just awful people especially to their daughter my brothers wife. Anyway he told her about the fishing trip and she said he had to go with her to her parents home town to celebrate her sisters kids first birthday.
My brother told me when I was having dinner with them this week. I told her that the kid won’t remember my brother not being there and I did already invite to this trip where as she only mentioned the birthday on Saturday. I told her that I’d rather have my brother there with me as both him and her get to do what they want. She wants to go to a birthday and so does my brother.
She called me an asshole at the table for downplaying her family. I simply responded that she has stated she hates her own family so why does she care? She got up and left. I left soon after and called my brother on Monday. He is going with his wife even though he said he’d rather go with me and our friends.
I understand he is married and they share family and whatnot but AITA here?

My older brother and his wife are big into saving everything, they have money but horde it all. Like they never eat out, go on vacations, once all their bills are paid everything goes into retirement, savings, and investments.
Tbh idc that is on them, my concern is my niece who is six has never had a Birthday party or even a cake. I recently moved to be closer to our family, use to live in DC. I found out the gifts I or anyone would send would get thrown out.
So my mother and I got family together, and since my mom knew the girls my niece would have play dates with she also invited them.
We hosted the party at my house, and our mom said she just wanted to have grandma and granddaughter time. Free baby sitting so of course they said yes.
Let's say of course my niece said she had a party when she got home and that is fine. My brother and his wife are pissed and now they have threatened to prevent our mom from seeing her granddaughter.
I told my brother he is being dumb, they have no reason to be against the party. They did not pay for anything, but he told me what if she expects such celebrations now.
I told him first they have the money to do so, they are choosing to live this way. That aside I told them I will pay for every celebration or event. She deserves to be a child.
Even threaten to call the cops next time, I just laughed and said what you going to do call them cops and tell them your mother and brother kidnapped your kid to throw them a party?
Outside that it has caused kind of a rift in our family and our mother is really feeling it. She was extremely hurt when my brother said she could not see her granddaughter anymore.
I know my brother if I apologize and promise to never do such a thing again they will walk back on what they said to our mom. Free baby sitting after all.
Should I apologize and agree for the sake of our mom?

I am a 35yo guy with a 3yo daughter. Daugther's mom left me in summer of 2022 after 8 years together (3rd year married) so I have been single a bit less than 2 years. There were some relationship issues over our different personality that was there (I am passive, introverted, little depressive while she is type A, extroverted and little manic), that I thought we could work through, but a lot of stress during pandemic (job change, parents health, house renovation, new child etc. in the middle of it all) caused the relationship to break down. I have been living alone for year and a half now, and have my daughter during weekdays. Divorce is not settles yet since daughter's mom needs to pay me quite a bit of alimony + child support and she is obviously salty about that.
I am doing alright on my own. Spending quality time with my daughter and working hard during the week. Reading, catching up with friends, chores on weekends. I am a bit lonely on weekend nights yes, and I would like to be part of a family unit eventually, but just so busy with life and not letting anything fall through the crack. In a way, I relate to those depressive dilettante types in the novels, and find the current situation as a sad divorced dad "fitting" for me.
Women at work, and partners of my friends, have been relentless with trying to offer their friends. I guess they hate to see me wasting away my best years? I don't know where I could fit a serious relationship into my current life though. Not sure if anyone my age is okay with meeting me like once every other week.
I am invited to my supervisor's birthday party in a couple weeks, and learned through others that she showed my photos + shared who I am to her single friends (my supervisor and go back a long time and are close friends outside of work as well, so she knows a lot about me) and promised them that I will be at the birthday party, ready to be set up with them. To my knowledge, they are smart, attractive women with promising careers. I already know who one of those friends is, because a woman was staring very intently at my daughter and I at a grocery store that I thought it was very strange, and I later I saw her in a group photo with my supervisor. In fact, the party is more grandiose than previous years and will be taking place in a more remote place, meaning there is no escaping in the middle (which I tend to do when I run out of social energy, which happens pretty fast).
This should be exciting, but actually it is giving me an extremely complex, difficult to explain feeling. I feel pressured to show up and be on my best behaviour, given these are my supervisor's friends, and I have some social anxiety. The pressure is making me want to not go, which I can't, given my relationship with the birthday girl and that her friends have been promised that I will be there.

I also feel zero percent ready for a relationship, in fact, this feeling I have might be related to fact that I am still not over the breakdown of my marriage. I have always been popular with girls, but never been good at reacting properly to that popularity, and am probably one of those "emotionally unavailable" men. There is a long list of girls who came to me looking for love but left disappointed.
I'm already nervous and thinking non-stop about how this invitation to "be set up" with my supervisor's friends is giving me negative emotions like a rock thrown into a calm pond. Or maybe the pond wasn't calm to begin with? I need some perspective on how to think/behave/approach this situation.

About two months ago my friend, A, (15f) and I started talking to a senior, who we'll call Groomer, in one of our AP classes (he said he was 17 but I recently learned that he lied about his birthday and was 18 at the time). At first I just started talking to him because he was assigned to our table and I wanted to be nice. It wasn't too long before it became apparent that he was a transfer and had no friends so eventually we invited him to sit at our table during lunch. It was only a couple weeks before he made a sexual advance towards me (which I immediately declined and then proceeded to distance myself from him and warned A). Unfortunately, A and another friend B(14f) didn't make the same decision. A has really bad issues and often seeks out "relationships" with adult men, B has never been approached for any sort of relationship before and clearly finds the whole situation exciting. In the following weeks, Groomer has unprotected sex with both A and B (whilst lying to A about his relationship with B). B knew about Groomer's relations with A but saw it as a challenge and still decided to lie to A about their "relationship". Two weeks ago Groomer got expelled for vaping and since learning about the situation with B, A has stopped most contact with Groomer but B is currently meeting up and having relations with him. I've begged B to stop but every time it's brought up she just gets mad at me and becom V aggressive. This whole situation stresses me out and, honestly I feel my empathy for B waning at this point, l'm directing all my rage at Groomer and I just want Groomer to pay. I desperately need advice. I was considering informing Groomer's college about the situation but I don't know if that's going to be effective. Deadass kinda wanna swat his house so if anyone know how to do that pls tell me.

I was with my first love for 3 and a bit years, we met in late 2010 before we broke up 10 years ago in early 2014. We were young and in our early 20s back then, things just fizzled out.
I've always thought about her but eventually we went our separate ways, she got in to a relationship with another guy after me for a few years but eventually he ended up cheating on her, this was around 2017.
After her breakup in 2017 I confessed my feelings for her but we didn't go anywhere with it as she was still healing so I told her I need to cut her off at the point because I told her I was struggling to be just friends with her, to which she said that she was heartbroken that's it come to us parting ways. But we wished each other well and went our separate ways. I was really at my lowest at that point but have come a really long way since in terms of having a successful career and have improved a lot financially and mentally.
At the start of 2019, she did add me on social media but she didn't say anything to me so a few days later I ended up deleting her because I realised I still wasn't over her, I regretted deleting her afterwards.
At the end of 2019 I heard that she was engaged, she ended up getting married but then I heard she got divorced around a year and a half ago. A few monthds ago I found out that the reason for her divorce was because her husband cheated on her and was abusive towards her. They got divorced around early 2022.
As for me I did get in to another relationship with someone else but I was also cheated on so I have been single for a few years now, I have been evolving in my career and proud of how far I've come and have recently started a new chapter in my career. I considered getting in touch with her a few months ago but I noticed that she had cut off a lot of people from her social media so I wasnt too sure how she'd react to me adding her, I thought she'd reject me seen as she's cutting off a lot of people.
So around 3 months ago I took the plunge seen as I had nothing to lose and sent her a request on instagram, and she has accepted and also followed me back. She's been viewing my stories and a month ago I posted a life quote on my story which she liked, I haven't spoke to her yet. I posted a few pictures of myself which she hasn't liked but A few weeks ago I posted a quote on my story that said 'be the reason for someone's pain to turn into a smile', she liked that quote and also another one that I posted last week. It was my birthday a few days ago and she liked a birthday story that I posted on instagram. I'm limiting the amount of posts that I like of hers because I don't want to seem too forward.
I'm assuming she is single but not entirely sure. I added her 3 months ago but she deleted me, I was confused because she only liked one of my stories few days prior. I would have liked to see if there was future for us but don't think she's interested now, i have messaged her saying 'Hi, hope your well. I probably should have said something a long time ago but I didn't, my fault. I've been praying for you, today I realise I've been deleted anyways I hope your keeping happy and healthy'. She replied saying 'Hey I'm good thanks hope you are too, that is kind of you, I didn't expect this kind of message'.
I didn't really know what to say back to her, I still don't understand why she deleted me even though days before she was showing an interest in my stories before and now she's deleted me. I have just replied saying 'that's good. Sorry for catching you off guard with it, I wanted to reach out to you earlier. I'm glad your doing well though' and now she has replied back saying 'can I ask why?' I replied back saying 'It's been on my mind for a while to get back in touch with you, I didn't add you for no reason. But we don't need to if it's not something your comfortable with'. She has now sent a long message as follows: 'You don’t make me feel uncomfortable. I have thought about you over the years and wished you well.
I removed you because you have my ex and his family on your instagram and I removed everyone who has any contact with them. You will have heard that I was married there for a short period of time but it was hell and now I’m out of it I don’t want them knowing anything about my life, so I removed everyone who has any link with them. I didn’t realise till that day that you did. It was nothing to do with you personally.' .
Im not actually friends with her ex husband as he is just someone that lives nearby to me and we have never spoken so I have now replied with this: 'I'm sorry that you had to go through that, I hope your okay and I pray god brings you ease. I wouldn't exactly say I have anything to do with them personally though, only thing I know about them is that they're from my area too. It makes sense now and it's understandable why you did that.'
She has replied back again saying 'I'm great, God is the best of planners and it was the best thing for me. Even so, I removed everyone who had us both so sorry about that' and to which I have replied 'That's fair enough, I'm glad to hear your doing well though and that your at peace now. That's what matters most'. She had now asked 'how have you been, what's new with you?' I have just replied saying 'I'm not too bad thanks, life's changed a lot since we last spoke so there's quite a lot that's new lol'. That was few nights ago, and after that we were speaking generally about the holiday that I'm currently on and what to do as she has been here before too and she also asked how long I'm there for, it was in general a short and civilised conversation.
She ended the conversation 6 nights ago by liking my last message, I don't know if she plans to message me again as she did take a few hours to reply between each message, What are the chances that she'll message me even if we don't follow each other on instagram anymore. I am slightly anxious that she won't message me after this due to her deleting me because her ex is on my Instagram. Was thinking of just giving her space for a few more days, then deleting her ex and requesting her back in around a weeks time.
