2024.05.14 17:18 Al-D-Schritte Opus Dei didn't (still don't?) allow family photos in numeraries' rooms: reflections

I remember in all the centers I lived in, there were plenty of pictures of JME, Don Alvaro, JME's parents and "Aunt Carmen", his sister around the place, but numeraries never had photos of their blood relations on display in their rooms. This rule must have been given to us when we joined but I can't remember now. I found this sad article in Opus Libros from a num in Spain who remembers an instruction came out from OD in the late 80s on this issue - no personal photos on display in bedrooms.
Opuslibros - Familia de Sangre.- Edu
The whole article is worth reading as it shows how Opus Dei's practices "detached" this man so much from his family that he didn't shed a tear when either of his parents died, and gradually lost all feeling for his siblings. He was allowed to go the burials of his parents but not the funeral masses. He makes the point about how OD's practices hardly line up with the 4th commandment to honor one's parents.
As for me, I took this in my stride as I had a deeply fractured and traumatic relationship with my blood family, which I had hardly begun to process by the time OD offered me a spiritualized escape from it. I would never have put up photos of my family anyway but looking back, the idea that we had photos of JME's blood relations all around but none of our own says so much about how cultish OD is. If I had had to explain that to someone outside OD, I think I would have balked at it or been embarrassed. It's disturbing beyond measure.
It also got me thinking about the other nums I knew. It's not like we chatted much about our families, but I picked up that a fair share had the loss of one parent as a child, two had alcoholism in the family, some had been to boarding schools, and many others were emotionally stunted by parents who were not emotionally available. So in a sense, it would have needed that kind of distance and family trauma to not care about the prohibition on displaying family photos.
What are others' experiences and feelings? Have the rules changed in recent years? Thanks

2024.05.13 14:34 atinylittlebug My husband and I nicknamed our baby "Bean" and now calling them by their intended name feels weird

When we found out we were expecting, I was only 4 weeks along and we jokingly called the baby "Bean" with a bunch of puns in the style of Dean from Community.
Now that we're deciding on a real name for her, anything else but "Bean" sounds clunky.
Anyways, we'll get over it with time. The name we have chosen is Vanessa Carmen. Just wanted to share a funny development.

2024.05.13 01:26 chronic314 Backlash, parental alienation syndrome and co-construction

https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Backlash%2c+parental+alienation+syndrome+and+co-construction.-a0179570828
Work on the issue of sexual abuse in children and adolescents lays bare the power relations between genders, generations and social classes. The issue of gender is seen in statistics from UN agencies that report that "one in four girls and one in nine boys will be sexually abused before they reach the age of 18."(1) Generational power relations are clear because the perpetrators are adults, and the power relations of class are evident in the backlash generated by powerful sectors that have attempted to prop up the myth that child abuse is only a problem among the poor and working classes.
Webster's Dictionary defines "backlash" as "a strong adverse reaction to a political or social movement." More plainly, backlash is a negative reaction to a positive and constructive step forward. Professor of law John Myers identifies the positive step as the progress made in the past two decades with regard to child abuse and the backlash as the escalation of criticism against professionals involved in child protection.(2)
David Finkelhor was responsible for pioneering work on the sexual abuse of children in the United States. In his 1979 book, Sexually Victimized Children, Finkelhor recognizes the important contributions of the women's movement and professionals involved in child protection lobbying in drawing attention to the realities of sexual violence against minors: "If the sexual abuse of children has risen to prominence as a social problem rather quickly, it is because it has been championed by an alliance of two constituencies by now rather experienced in the promotion of social problems."(3)
In the United States, a backlash began in the 1980s under the Reagan Administration's return to stale and reactionary values following the struggles of the women's movement and the children's rights movement the 1960s and 70s.
What was once secret was now openly debated, and controversy wracked the most idealized institutions, including church, family and school. Socially consecrated myths of long-standing were crumbling: "The home is the seat of love, support and safety for children"; "Good families don't talk about sexuality"; "Churches reflect the highest moral standard with regard to sexuality"; "Children are safe in school."
By drawing attention to the realities of child sexual abuse, a solid blow was dealt to the "powers that be"; hypocrisy was uncovered; and unquestioned assumptions were challenged. This frontal attack was met with denial by means of a range of strategies developed by the fundamentalisms of faith and the market.
One of these backlash strategists was prominent forensics expert Richard Gardner, who coined the term "parental alienation syndrome" in 1985 to describe a supposed psychological disorder that he had observed in lengthy and bitter custody battles. His original paper on the subject uses the following description:
"The term I prefer to use is parental alienation syndrome. I have introduced this term to refer to a disturbance in which children are obsessed with deprecation and criticism of a parent—denigration that is unjustified and/or exaggerated. The notion that such children are merely 'brainwashed' is narrow."(4)
However, supposedly citing his original work several years later, Gardner re-describes this phenomena somewhat differently.
"[t]he parental alienation syndrome (PAS) is a childhood disorder that arises almost exclusively in the context of child-custody disputes. Its primary manifestation is the child's campaign of denigration against a parent, a campaign that has no justification. It results from the combination of a programming (brainwashing) parent's indoctrinations and the child's own contributions to the vilification of the target parent. When true parental abuse and/or neglect is present, the child's animosity may be justified, and so the parental alienation syndrome explanation for the child's hostility is not applicable."(5)
The two different definitions demonstrate the changes in this argument over time with the goal of developing a different strategy for discrediting the hard research work and harder-won social gains of the women's movement and the professionals lobbying for child protection.
Maria Jose Blanco Barea has studied the many works that Gardner published up to his death by suicide in 2003, and she suggests that "perhaps the psychological causes that led to his suicide should be taken into consideration." With regard to Gardner's professional career, Blanco Barea recounts that "Gardner dedicated the first part of his professional life to working as a forensics expert in cases of sexual abuse brought by children against their parents, students against professors, members of the faithful against representatives of organized religions and within military families. Gardner often stressed that he was a former captain [in the U.S. Army Medical Corps] and as a psychologist treated members of the armed forces who had served in Korea. He specialized in techniques to 'deprogram' U.S. soldiers who had been prisoners of war. His methodologies and expert testimony were used to question the credibility of sexual abuse victims, to prove that the accused were innocent and that the accusers were guilty of perjury. Gardner testified in cases of sexual abuse in the context of hearings to determine custody, visitation and guardianship, and he himself explains that he developed his research over the course of his career. In other words, he directly applied the scientific method of trial and error in real-life court cases that were settled while he was still carrying out his research. When he decided to publish his theories in 1985, Garner failed to provide the scientific community with the necessary data to scientifically analyze his conclusions."(6)
Richard Gardner's books were published by Creative Therapeutics, which he himself owned. Some of his articles were published in Issues in Child Abuse Accusations, a publication of the Institute for Psychological Therapies, which is directed by Dr. Ralph Underwager who is well known for an interview in the Dutch journal Paidika […](7)
In the 1970s and 80s and prior to his publication of the parental alienation syndrome, Gardner developed the "Sex-Abuse Legitimacy Scale" (SAL Scale), which he used in his own courtroom testimony. Nonetheless, Gardner's ideological stance clearly shows that he did not view child sexual abuse as a problem, except when it is denounced.
"It is of interest that of all the ancient peoples it may very well be that the Jews were the only ones who were punitive toward [adults who had sex with children]. Early Christian proscriptions against [adult-child sex] appear to have been derived from the earlier teachings of the Jews, and our present overreaction to [adult-child sex] represents an exaggeration of Judeo-Christian principles and is a significant factor operative in Western society's atypicality with regard to such activities."(8)
"The child might be helped to appreciate the wisdom of Shakespeare's Hamlet, who said, 'Nothing's either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.'"(9)
"And her [the mother's] increased sexuality may lessen the need for her husband to return to their daughter for sexual gratification."(10)
"… except for a certain amount of sexual frustration that was not gratified, the four-year-old had not been significantly traumatized by these encounters."(11)
Elsewhere Gardner had the following to say about child sexual abuse: "The sexually abused child is generally considered to be the victim, though the child may initiate sexual encounters by 'seducing' the adult."(12) Gardner even proposes that [child sexual abuse] serves procreative purposes; he maintains that although the child cannot become pregnant, a child who is drawn into sexual encounters at an early age is likely to become highly sexualized and thus will crave sexual experiences during the prepubertal years. Such a "charged up child" is more likely to transmit his or her genes through his or her progeny at an early age. Gardner states: "The younger the survival machine at the time sexual urges appear, the longer will be the span of procreative capacity, and the greater the likelihood the individual will create more survival machines in the next generation."(13) He also recommended that the incestuous father "has to be helped to appreciate that, even today, it [adult-child sex] is a widespread and accepted practice among literally billions of people. He has to appreciate that in our Western society especially we take a very punitive and moralistic attitude toward such inclinations.… He has also had back [sic] luck with regard to the place and time he was born with regard to social attitudes toward [adult-child esx]."(14)
The two definitions of parental alienation syndrome are interesting because the first reveals that the intention of the original strategy was to minimize the devastating effects that child abuse has in the victims. However, the 2002 definition added: "When true parental abuse and/or neglect is present, the child's animosity may be justified, and so the parental alienation syndrome explanation for the child's hostility is not applicable."(15) But curiously, the indicators of parental alienation syndrome also coincide with the indicators of sexual abuse that have been established by international studies on this problem.
At the time of the revised definition, the international study of child abuse and the movement to prevent the victimization of children was much further advanced. Some examples are the five European seminars "Secrets that Destroy" held in 1998 by the Save the Children Alliance; the 1999 "Vision and Reality" reports that address women's and children's rights; and a series of later publications by experts in the matter.
Although the SAL scale has been widely disregarded as a tool for diagnosing sexual abuse, Gardner's real thoughts are evident in the above citations from his works. Both the SAL scale and parental alienation syndrome represent a scandalous violation of the human rights of women, adolescents and children.
In numerous publications, Gardner uses supposedly scientific but paradoxical arguments to rationalize his denial of violence against women, defined in the Belem do Para Convention as "a manifestation of the historically unequal power relations between women and men."(16) Making use of children, he creates a new and sophisticated form of violence against women that involves complicity of the justice system.
Gardner proposed a series of symptoms that reveal three types of parental alienation syndrome (severe, moderate and mild) and specific treatment for each type. The treatment that he proposes for parental alienation syndrome involves both legal and health-care professionals, who Gardner says should have the power to administer the appropriate treatment based on the coercion, threat, change in living arrangements and, as a last resort, the internment and "deprogramming" of the child. As Blanco Barea observes, "Parental alienation syndrome makes a fraud of the law. It makes use of the declarations against discriminations against women and of the rights of the child to protect the parent and escape the application of the Conference of Vienna that protects against torture and degrading treatment, especially in the case of women and girls, and to escape the application of the Convention on the Rights of the Child."(17)
As law professor John Myers explains, "Gardner is an outspoken critic of certain aspects of the child protection system. Apparently, Gardner believes America is in the throes of mass hysteria over child sexual abuse. He writes that 'sex-abuse hysteria is omnipresent' (True and False Accusations of Child Sex Abuse, 1992, p. xxv). In his 1991 book titled Sex Abuse Hysteria: Salem Witch Trials Revisited, Gardner is harshly critical of an unspecified portion of the mental health professionals, investigators, and prosecutors trying to protect children. For example, Gardner accuses some prosecutors of gratifying their own sexual urges and sadistic tendencies through involvement in sexual abuse cases. […] It seems clear that Richard Gardner cannot claim to be balanced or objective when it comes to allegations of child sexual abuse."(18)
Although Gardner and his theories can be questioned for their misogynist and perverse ideology, in Argentina former family court judge Eduardo Cardenas published "El abuso de las denuncias de abuso" (The Abuse of Claims of Abuse) in La Ley, on September 15, 2000. Cardenas's article supported Gardner's theories and sparked backlash in our country, which has provoked widespread reaction among well-known professionals.
Perhaps the best summary of what occurred in Argentina after 2000 is found in the book Maltrato infantil: Riesgos del compromiso profesional (Child Abuse: The Risks of Professional Commitment), a collection of essays by known specialists on the issue, edited by Silvio Lamberti. As the introduction to this book describes:
"As long as the problem was associated with the lower classes, more and more cases were reported. When it began to be suspected that family violence affected all social classes and the middle and upper classes were scrutinized, a reactionary movement used the guise of good intentions to put limits on professionals that supposedly 'abused the reports of child sexual abuse.'
"This was the reaction of:
  1. Fathers who were engaged in custody battles or other legal disputes regarding visitation rights.
  2. Lawyers who preached equanimity and warned against the feminist bias that they claimed had affected the reports.
  3. Experts who tried to pass off the backlash literature from the U.S. as scientific evidence to support their own conclusions.
"This brutal attack tends to carry into an ideological realm a debate that crosses legal and psychosocial discourses, ethics and society as a whole and tries to undo the advances already gained, discouraging those who have worked to achieve these gains. In short, they intend to:
  1. Discredit reports of child abuse.
  2. Turn anyone who denounces abuse into a suspect.
  3. Blur the boundaries between victim and victimizer.
  4. Confuse the matter by citing the rare cases of violence against boys or adult men committed by women.
  5. Discredit the specialized treatment services even though the law recognizes the value of their diagnosis.
  6. Ignore constitutional norms from the Convention on Rights of the Child.
"Thus, the meaning of abusive conduct is inverted, with abuse being attributed to the person who reports the abuse and requests the fulfillment of the law.
"This reactionary backlash supports the persistence of family violence and condemns all girls and/or victims of the perpetuation of incest and abuse while attempting to stymie the legal system and the work of other professionals who until now have born the heavy burden of this process."(19)
This scientific alert went out over three years ago; nonetheless, today there are increasing obstacles to working on this issue. The notion of false reports of abuse is now firmly rooted in the courts. Sexual abuse trials are tremendous ordeals that seriously damage the children and the adults who report the crime and place a heavy burden on the professionals who take the children's part and who often face accusations of malpractice, libel or slander.
The discrediting of psychological experts is of serious concern. What started with Gardner has continued with followers who have discredited indicators, treatments, techniques and prevention campaigns. Brandishing the concept of co-construction on the part of the family members of the victims or the professionals, the testimony of the children is discredited, accused of being childhood fantasy and tale-telling.
The efforts of Gardner and his followers have been echoed by the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, an institution that claims to represent the social sexual moral but which has promoted a policy of smoke-screening sexual abuse.
The Red Latinoamericana de Catolicas por el Derecho a Decidir (Latin American Network of Catholics for the Right to Decide) has undertaken a study on the secret system of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church.(20) The ecclesiastical hierarchy always has been aware of these crimes and has implemented a policy of covering up the abuses committed by priests. This policy is summarized in the following ten points adapted from the studies carried out by the Spanish journalist Pepe Rodriguez(21) and corroborated in the studies of the Catolicas por el Derecho a Decidir:
  1. Discreet investigation of the incident. The prelates of the diocese often have ecclesiastical informants, people who desire to rise in the esteem of the hierarchy through their reports. They keep the bishops abreast of the transgressions of the priests under their authority. These reports are given orally.
  2. Initiation of actions to dissuade the aggressor and/or the victim(s). Once the prelate recognizes the situation of sexual abuse in which the image of the Church could be tarnished, the aggressor is rebuked. Then the bishops dedicate themselves to convincing the victims and their families, assuring them that the aggressor will be punished and that he has repented. They persuade the families to not report the crime so that no one in the Church or the family will suffer the consequences.
  3. Covering up the incident and the identity of the aggressor so the case never becomes public. In this effort, acts are undertaken to confuse the matter, including transferral of the priest to another parish, bribery of the victim and their family members or the use of threats and suspension of benefits (for example, expulsion from school).
  4. Measures to reinforce the cover up. When the case escapes the closed doors of the Church, the hierarch opens an internal investigation against the aggressor to defend against eventual accusations of passivity in case there is external pressure from the media or society or a civil suit. Generally, the investigation is paralyzed indefinitely. At this stage, the priest usually is transferred to another parish, another diocese or another country, depending on the situation.
  5. Denial of the incident when the case becomes public, under the argument that the priest is a man of virtue heeding God's call, a holy figure who could never commit a crime of this nature. When denial is no longer possible, the matter is treated as an exception to this rule.
  6. Public defense of the aggressor, stressing his good service to the Church and his personal merits. If he did do anything wrong, he is profoundly repentant and was not conscious of his acts. An appeal is made to the Christian sentiments of pardoning a repentant sinner.
  7. Public discrediting of the victim(s). Rodriguez uses the metaphor of ants defending an anthill to describe the corporativist attitude of the clergy when one of its members is accused. The guilt is reversed; the victim(s) and/or their family members are blamed.
  8. Paranoiac accusations of the denunciation being linked to campaigns orchestrated by "enemies of the Church." When the number of accusations is so high that discrediting the victims is not enough, the hierarchy complains that there are national or international powers or cults conspiring against the Church.
  9. Possibility of negotiation with the victim. This negotiation frequently occurs before the case is made public when the intention of the Church is to buy the victim's silence to preserve the image of the institution. When there is a public scandal, the hierarchy tries to minimize the damage by trying to negotiate the withdrawal of the accusations against the aggressor.
  10. Protection of the priest/aggressor. When the accused is found to be guilty, the hierarchy stands by him and in some cases even pays him homage or praises him, doing everything possible to erase the incident from the public memory.(22)
As the Church silences and covers up the abuses committed within its institutions, it resembles Gardner and his followers in that it denies the realities of domestic violence and the sexual abuse of children and adolescents and hampers investigation of these matters. Alliances with key judicial figures lead to perverse and scandalous rulings, such as the Melo Pacheco case in Mar del Plata, the Storni case Santa Fe or the stalling in the Grassi trial, to name the most notorious cases. Many others remain anonymous, which demonstrates the existence of a model that favors the impunity of the abusers, the suffering of the victims and the punishment of those who are working within the framework of human rights.
A sturdy thread connects those who deny, discredit, silence, minimize, distort and negotiate the rights of children: the perversity that has subordinated their ethics to systems of belief that are authoritarian, patriarchal and/or favor the domination of adults.
This ideological combination stacks the deck against victims who, for the most part, are children, adolescents and women. Women are the most discredited. In the cases in which priests are accused of sexual abuse, most people take their side, doubt the word of the victim(s) and even blame them or imply that the priests were victims of a conspiracy. Girl victims are not considered credible because they are presented as easily influenced, prone to fantasy or liars. If they are adolescents, their morals are questioned: it is argued that they already had had sexual relations before the abuse or are guilty of seducing their abuser.
In the case of domestic abuse, especially in cases of father-child incest, the mother is accused of maliciously attempting to distance the child from the father, inventing the abuse out of revenge or because she is hysterical or any other argument that serves to safeguard the figure of the father of the family or the Father of the parish. In both cases, the common sensibilities of the population are exploited: tolerance of male sexual behavior fed by the dominate sexual morality, which makes the argument of false reports even more credible than the martyrdom and accusations of the victims.
To compare the consequences that a child may suffer with the separation of his or her parents, even in a messy divorce, with the short- and long-term consequences of father-child abuse is a perverse strategy that denies the serious and profound attack on the victim's subjective integrity, which Jorge Barudy calls "attempted moral murder."
Parental alienation syndrome, the "malicious mother" and co-construction are non-scientific theories, and when used in the context of a trial, they violate the victim's constitutional rights as well as the Convention on the Rights of the Child, CEDAW and other agreements incorporated into our constitution in 1994.
We must remember that Richard Gardner's theories were developed in the United States through a method of trial and error that was applied directly in the courtroom in bitter divorce cases, which were ruled upon as Gardner was undertaking his research. In addition, the U.S. is one of the few countries that has neither ratified nor incorporated into its constitution the Convention on the Rights of the Child or CEDAW.
As Blanco Barea explains, in legal contexts based on human rights, those professionals who can carry out the therapy or treatment recommended by Gardner or his followers (such as "aversion therapy" plus the vicarious treatment of deprogramming and, as a precaution, the guarantee of visitation rights or the reversal of custody and/or total separation of the "alienating" parent and the "alienated" child) "are committing crimes of torture, obstruction of justice and legal fraud, and if they are related to the minors in question, they are also guilty of domestic violence."(23)
Child abuse, especially sexual abuse, is an alarming, universal problem. Increased attention and effective protection skills and prevention measures are necessary at family, local, national and international levels.
After a long tradition of silence, sexual abuse of children is being denounced more frequently and is becoming a topic for public and political discussion.
To alert governments and civil society organizations to the need to play a more active role in the promotion of and respect for the rights of the child (as put forth in article 19 and 34* of the Convention on the Rights of the Child) and to contribute to the prevention of child abuse, the Women's World Summit Foundation, WWSF, launched the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse in 2000. The Day is commemorated every November 19 together with the anniversary of the International Day for the Rights of the Child (November 20). The objective of the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse is to rally around the issue of child abuse and the urgent need for effective prevention programs.
To consolidate the global call for action, in 2001 WWSF launched an international NGO coalition that marks the World Day with appropriate events and activities to focus on and increase prevention education.

2024.05.12 21:17 Chemical-Ad-461 In hell we live Lament theory:

Another 'In Hell we Live, Lament' theory... But about the sinners

Part 0; Introduction:

I would like to preface this that while 'In hell we Live, Lament' has been theorized to hell and back, I haven't been able to find of any theory in particular that took this approach, so I wanted to share it and see what people thought of it, I am either cooking some Gordon Ramsey shit or I belong in Asylum.
I have seen people in the comments of 'In hell we Live, Lament' relating the different parts after 'Lament!' to the sinners. The parts are these:
If you wanted me to speak
If you wanted me to think
If you wanted me to carry on our dreams
[...]
Why'd you make my voice stutter?
Why do truths never matter?
Why'd you curse me with "You're a natural born genius"?
[...]
If you wanted me to live
If you want me to forgive
If you want us to pretend like we're civilized humans
[...]
Why do deaths end my torture?
Why can't anyone feel my hurt?
Why'd you crown the most violent to be champions?
My personal theory, is that each of these relates to the sinners. In the exact order they are in the game. Let me cook.

Part 1; Singular Identification:

Yi Sang: If you wanted me to speak
I feel like this one is fairly simple after his Canto, what with him having had the chance of saving the league of nine (or perceiving to have had the chance) but not doing so by not speaking, thinking it will fix itself and that not using one's capabilities. In contrast, now he goes out of his way to actively speak and mediate. My boy.
Faust: If you wanted me to think
Hear me out. Faust does not think. This might sound strange directed to the genius of the group but hear me out. In some other theories (https://www.reddit.com/limbuscompany/comments/19cide2/dantes_true_identity_leviathan_and_canto_5/) it has already been brought up that Faust is likely connected to many other fausts that teach her and talk to her. If whenever Faust refers to 'Faust' she is talking about what the 'Council of Fausts' is talking about or telling her, we have barely seen this character actually say anything of her own or make choices by herself.
Don Quixote: If you wanted me to carry on our dreams
There is this really cool theory of Don Quixote an analysis of her ids (https://www.reddit.com/limbuscompany/comments/1byabzt/the_uncanny_competence_of_don_quixote_painstaking/) that I will use as a base. I personally thing that most of what we see from Don isn't her, it's Miguel. (Or Don Quixote's name is actually Miguel and she is taking her friend's name but I am not sure) The spear might be not hers. Loving fixers might be not hers. And being a justice gremlin 24/7 is very likely not a personality trait of Don, but her friend. A dream she took up from someone who can no longer carry it.
[...]
Ryoshu: Why'd you make my voice stutter?
Hear me out, Ryoshu talks very little, and what little she talks, she has no concern for whether or not others understand her half of the time. I feel like where Yi Sang's problem came from not speaking, hers might come from speaking a tad too much, a slip of a tongue that got her into severe problems (But I haven't read the novel, this is just me reaching, tbqh). I am pretty sure there is a line in Canto 4 or 6 where she outright says that she really doesn't like talking a lot/for long.
Meursault: Why do truths never matter?
One of my favourite sinners. I personally think that Meursault is one of the most interesting characters, but putting my bias aside, Intervallo 3.5 does a pretty good job of explaining it.

https://preview.redd.it/myrcr4z2n10d1.png?width=771&format=png&auto=webp&s=3571684398f34d01c3a741e4055e2886807d257d

https://preview.redd.it/kdxoo7r4n10d1.png?width=758&format=png&auto=webp&s=84caf6a64868bfb8d3444295f3fea59991ba91d4
Meursault has opinions. He just no longer chooses to elaborate upon them. It would seem that in his past (possibly in N corp) he tried to explain them, while being very damn objective, and they were all dismissed, leading to the "Why do truths never matter?".

Hong Lu: Why'd you curse me with "You're a natural born genius"?
I think we can all agree that Hong Lu is one of the most emotionally intelligent sinners but chooses to hide it behind ignorance and naïvete. I would say that this line refers to that, but it could also be referring to his Jade Eye. Both of these characteristics might have given him trouble (and probably got him out of it) many times.

[...]

Heathcliff: If you wanted me to live
Canto 6. My man literally distorted, which you know, is not only failing to get an EGO, but also supposed to be Carmen's way of preventing someone from doing what she did, attempting against their life, and instead of that, become my tool. Furthermore, it feels like Cathy wanted him to LIVE. Not drone around her, but genuinely live for himself, and that might be a central point of his. Furthermore, sense of worth in oneself felt like a central point of the Canto.

Ishmael: If you want me to forgive
Canto 5. (even if one could say some degree of revenge occurred) Moving on.

Rodion: If you want us to pretend like we're civilized humans
I feel like this has to do with both her "self centeredness" that made her>! kill the debt collector!< and the social unjustice touched upon in her Canto. How can we all be civilized humans if when one is taking tea, another one is dying of hunger in a trashcan? Simultaneously, how can we all be civilized humans if we all are the main characters? (funnily enough, her canto is the one that focuses the least on the canto's main sinner, which I think it is even doubling down even further of her not being special.)
[...]
Sinclair: Why do deaths end my torture?
(yes, we are skipping Dante, the entire song is about either Dante or the star Dante follows (Ayin), but not sure tbh) While I don't have much justification in the way of canto other than his nature; Sinclair is mild, shy, but so damn good at violence. It would feel in character to genuinely question this, but I understand if this is a bit of a reach.
Outis: Why can't anyone feel my hurt?
I would argue that the entire Pagoda scene in Canto 2 and her constantly putting on a façade. As much as she has her own trauma and stuff, she also prefers nobody to know of it, since that would make her vulnerable and open, preferring to be a bootlicker to Dante, a sergeant (might not be a façade) and occasionally, a wise grandmother. This might be hella wrong tho.
Gregor: Why'd you crown the most violent to be champions?
I feel like this one makes sense, with the entire training he had to slash apples (and human heads) on sight, a murderous arm, and being crowned a champion when he didn't even want that title makes this line very, very fitting in my opinion.
Part 2; Pairs of Queens and Kings:
Several people have already pointed out that the questions get answered in the next lament. But what does that make for our characters, if we consider that?
(Yi Sang) If you wanted me to speak - Why'd you make my voice stutter? (Ryoshu)
Both of them speak quite incomprehensibly and tried to speak very little (at least Yi Sang before his Canto did). This one isn't really that good. I will say however, that after seeing the word counts, goddamn, Ryoshu is the one that has spoken the least.

(Faust) If you wanted me to think - Why do truths never matter? (Meursault)
This one I am more confident, both Faust and Meursault act somewhat robotic-like, with neither expressing much emotion, ever. But I do think that there is an interesting contrast in that Faust speaks a lot, relaying things from "Faust", but seldom thinks or speak for herself, while Meursault barely speaks but he definitely thinks a lot and has his own opinions that he just chooses not to share due to thinking them irrelevant, unnecessary or unwarranted.

(Don Quixote) If you wanted me to carry on our dreams - Why'd you curse me with "You're a natural born genius"?(Hong Lu)
Both of them are most definitely geniuses of some kind, and it is likely that they both have suffered to some degree for it; Don with the entire shtick of being a soloist and the possible consequences that can have for his friends described in the previous theory, and Hong Lu likely with his time in the family (dunno much of his work, can't even remember the name).

(Heathcliff) If you wanted me to live - Why do deaths end my torture? (Sinclair)
I would argue that there might be something there with Heathcliff batting Sinclair and both of them going to a basement, but I am genuinely not too sure about this one.

(Ishmael) If you want me to forgive - Why can't anyone feel my hurt? (Outis)
This one I find interesting. Ishmael has been the one to point out Outis' bullshit whenever she bootlicks Dante, and there was a clear conflict of power in Canto 5 with the ship at the start (which can be more interesting considering Odyssey implications and Outis' issues with leaders and herself taking leadership), I feel like this one could come true, but I will rest my case for now.

(Rodion) If you want us to pretend like we're civilized humans - Why'd you crown the most violent to be champions? (Gregor)
This one is one I am really confident about. There is this weird parallelism of Gregor, who wants to avoid the spotlight and protagonism that were always enforced upon him, to the point of defecting and Rodya, who supposedly wants to be special so badly that she would kill and endanger her fellow citizens. There is also that one scene in Canto 2 where Gregor tries to incite a rebellion, but can't, which is especially understandable considering he himself can't rebel or go against his mother much, and it was precisely Rodion who stopped him and was like: You do realize that these people have been enslaved all their lives, right? A wishy washy speech like that won't spurn them to action, which is a one to one mirror to Gregor's own situation. Or I am just going insane.

Conclusion:

There are some parts about this theory that are a bit weak, others I feel more confident about, but I am curious, what is the order you personally interpret? How would you make the relations? I think there might be some relation with the trios of 3 sinners, but honestly my brain is fried enough with just the stuff I put here.
Furthermore, there is also the idea that has been roaming in my head that it could be by canto order? As in, it feels like many Cantos answer one another back to back. Gregor and Rodya, Heathcliff and Ishmael, Yi Sang and Sinclair (if Yi Sang keeps the speak line, Sinclair can have the stutter line which suits him quite well too), and I also saw someone mentioning the possible relation of Ryoshu (possibly a mom) and Meursault (a momma's boy, perhaps). Then again, it could be simply not related to the song at all.

I am not sure if I have cooked or if it is fucking burnt, but I am not returning to the kitchen for a while...

2024.05.12 18:54 Friendly_Rate_2998 [F4M] John & Jane Smith

Her name was once Carmen, but that had changed since she started working for “The Company”. She was ex-military turned gun for hire of sorts. Though all of that didn’t matter as she left her old life behind for a new one. A new life as Jane Smith an agent for the company. She knew she’d had to live with a John Smith. Her to be husband and fellow agent. She had to work together with him to complete these high risk jobs.
Jane stood in front of her new home. She held her luggage in her left hand and the keys to her place in the other. It was a nice home near the heart of London in a wealthy neighbourhood. She opened the door and got inside. She put her luggage down and took off her backpack and black coat. She could hear grumbling from what she suspected to be a simmering pot or a pan.
Her heels clicked against the floor as she walked through the hallway to what she assumed was the living room from the map and pictures she saw of the home. She looked around before she heard a voice from behind her. “You must be Jane…”
.
Hi, I wanted to do a Roleplay based on the Amazon series “Mr & Mrs Smith”.
I expect the two characters to be getting used to living with someone else and slowly fall in love may that be after their first mission… at first sight or maybe even after a month or so of living together.
I mainly use character references, but descriptions are welcome too and talking about things that are welcome… starters!!!

2024.05.10 15:23 PrismaticPrincess25 Assistant Manager at New job and heard potentially homophobic comments from staff

So I started a new job on Monday. I'm in training to be the assistant manager but won't receive my official title until I'm done with my training so I can't technically say anything to anyone yet. The Manager went on medical leave for emergency surgery starting today so that just leaves the current Assistant manager to run things while she's gone.
On to the point, one woman in particular, let's call her Carmen (changing her name for anonymity)has been saying a few concerning things.
The UPS guy was dropping off some packages and she goes, "He's definitely gay. He's never been married."
My response was "There's nothing wrong with that if he is."
This caught the store managers attention (at this point she was still working) and she asked what was going on, "He's not gay! Why don't you turn around and mind your own business."
Then there's been a few other times where Carmen has talked about women who looked like the man of the relationship when lesbians have come in to pick up their glasses. Or just saying that this woman (who was obviously butch) looked like a man.
I know these are tame comments in the grand scheme of things but it's only my first week and she's already saying things like that. I feel based on that it could get worse and I'll have to do something. The store manager is planning to retire in a year which means I will take over her position when she does so there's that too.

2024.05.09 17:52 RobbedSpider5774 Is Carmen Grey a bad choice for my daughter?

I plan on naming my daughter Carmen Grey. Personally, I love it (which I know that’s important) but I have had a few people give me negative reviews. For example, my grandmother said it was ugly and a friend said it was boring. Is there something about this name I am missing?
Edit: just giving a backstory on the middle name Grey. It’s because of my deceased uncle. He also supported anything I was doing and would just let me blabber on for hours. If I was having a boy, I would have named him Lansford, which was my uncles middle name. But I’m having a girl I chose Grey because his nickname was The Grey Ghost. He even had a fancy belt buckle.
Edit 2 because I didn’t imagine this post getting so much traction: Thank you for the feedback. Truly wanted to make sure I was missing anything like if Carmen had another meaning I didn’t know about. Not interested in changing the name (unless of course, there was a negative finding) thank you for all the suggestions though!

2024.05.09 06:27 wdw67 The SHIB Show

The SHIB Show
Alright, let's talk about SHIB, the "Shiba Inu" coin. Now, you see, this thing was created by some mysterious figure named "Ryoshi." Yeah, that's right, Ryoshi, the crypto version of Carmen Sandiego. We have no idea who this person is – it could be your neighbor, your grandma, or even your dog. And speaking of dogs, they decided to name it after the Shiba Inu breed, which is the same mascot for Dogecoin. So, basically, they just took Dogecoin and gave it a makeover, hoping nobody would notice. It's like taking an old rusty car, putting a new paint job on it, and trying to sell it as a Ferrari.
Now, SHIB was supposed to be this big decentralized community experiment. No funding, no leadership, just a bunch of folks throwing coins at each other and hoping for the best. But let's be real here, folks. It's like trying to build a sandcastle in a tsunami – it's gonna get washed away real quick.
And let's talk about its value. One minute, it's shooting to the moon like Elon Musk on a SpaceX rocket, and the next, it's crashing harder than a drunk guy on a unicycle. It's like playing financial Russian roulette – you never know when you're gonna get hit.
But the best part? SHIB lacks a clear use case beyond being a meme. Yeah, you heard that right. It's like investing in air guitar – sure, it's fun to pretend you're a rockstar, but at the end of the day, you're still just standing there holding nothing.
So, to all you SHIB enthusiasts out there, let me tell you this: you might as well be investing in Monopoly money. At least then, you can buy Park Place and pretend you're a real estate tycoon. But hey, if you wanna roll the dice and take a gamble on SHIB, be my guest. Just don't come crying to me when you're left holding the bag, wondering why you invested in a digital dog meme instead of, I don't know, something actually useful.

2024.05.08 08:44 andItsGone-Poof Whats up with strange naming convention?

Names that communicate legend abilities:
Mirage, LifeLine, Ballistic, PathFinder, Octane, BloodHound, Seer, Vantage, New Castle, Wattson, Crypto
Confusing Names : Ash, Alter, Mad Maggie, Catalyst, Horizon, Fuse, Conduit
Just Names: Bangalore, Wraith, Revenant, Valkyrie, Gibby, Loba, Caustic, Rampart
Also what the heck is Light / Heavy Ammo .. any wingman is using sniper ammo
Edit: Names are cool and they have meanings. That was not my point thou. There are some better alternatives so the legend name communicate the abilities like
Blast for fuse
Luxe Merchant (if not Carmen Sandiago) for Loba
Rysha Rumble for mad Maggie
Void walker for wraith
Arsenal for Rampart
Abyssa for Horizon
Revive for Revenant

2024.05.07 18:53 nufrontiers Reasons that drivers should be suspicious of fake rider names and potentially cancel rather than pickup rider.

This was originally a reply to a comment and has been edited slightly.
Between a rider name of David, Big D, (or even just the letter D), I know from experience which one which one’s more likely to smell like marijuana, roll down the window to spit (mostly) out the car, ask for an unscheduled stop at a gas station or drive-through, blast his own music on phone speaker, and/or file a false report to get a free ride.
It’s not about race, culture, financial status/background. When somebody who is given a birth name of Keith or Tom/Dick/Harry but decides to put their rider account name as K-Dog it reveals a couple potential red flags. Maybe they’re trying to show a front; that they’re a player (showing attitude before the pickup). If you have to tell people you’re all that, then you’re not really all that.
It shows lack of respect for the driver of not providing their real name for driver safety purposes. It shows an attempt at deception/fraud that they don’t want to be held accountable for their actions during the ride. It doesn’t really help for the driver to tell police that they were assaulted by their previous rider named K-Dog.
The rider account name/nickname is information that’s really only seen by drivers and potentially some UbeLyft customer service agents. So what kind of puffed up attitude are they trying to front or what kind of information are they trying to hide? What does it say about a person that they want to come across as a badass (to their Uber driver???) even before they get picked up?
I remember back when they had the original Uber Pool, I remember some drivers posting comments about how their money was just as green, too. I also regret accepting those trips and letting many previous riders with green money (K-Dog, Big D, and T) in my car. I wish I’d just cancelled and waited the next Bob/Carmen/Kenji/Myra on UberX or Comfort.

Cut for Time
\1. Hotel/Restaurant (live sketch)
  • Chloe Fineman is at the front desk of a fancy hotel/restaurant. On the phone she says they are fully booked, but they can make room for Leonardo DiCaprio and his five guests. Mikey Day and Heidi Gardner (Mikey looks dressed like a 00s rock band frontman and Heidi looks a little Paris Hilton-esque) come in and ask for a room/table. Chloe denies them and they go into the “do you know who I am?” routine. Mikey (who has a ridiculous name I can’t remember) is from a “famous” band known for their song “Becky’s Mouth”, which Mikey sings for Chloe and it sounds like Jessie’s Girl, as Chloe points out. Heidi (also with a ridiculous name) is a model/actress and she mentions a commercial she was in. Dua Lipa enters as the third in their group. She cites her own list of silly sounding credits. Kenan comes out as the manager and gets mad at the group. Mikey tries to prove his importance by pointing out his car (not shown) from [fake car brand with silly name] which he got before it even released to the public. Kenan calls it ugly. Mikey also cites his expensive [fake clothing brand with silly name] clothing and Heidi her fancy bag with an LLF on it (standing for something starting with Luigi). Heidi pulls out a bottle of their brand of Ferret Vodka, which has a Ferret-haped stopper. Then, Colin Jost comes out in full vacation get-up, who the staff recognize as Colin Jost, and says he knows the trio and they can come sit at his table. He says he was just listening to “Becky’s Mouth”. End of sketch.
  • I thought this was pretty good. Sad to see a rare Colin Jost sketch appearance cut.
\2. What Would You Do? (live sketch)
  • There is a standard “What would you do?” intro where the premise is explained. In this episode, two actors will simulate a racist encounter in a pizza place to see how the patrons will react. Andrew Dismukes is the actor playing the guy behind the counter, and Marcello Hernandez is the actor playing a Latino guy with an accent buying a pizza. Marcello tries to order a pizza and Andrew suggests he illegally immigrated. As Molly Kearney, playing a nearby patron, is about to react, Dua Lipa and Ego Nwodim barge in. The narrator explains that these two women came in and interrupted the shoot so they couldn’t get the patrons’ reaction. They are both in fancy tracksuits (different colors) with a lot of makeup on and Dua has big hoop earrings. Both in trashy English accents, they start accosting Andrew. They say they’ve both been experiencing terrible diarrhea and it’s because of the pizza. They say they’ve only been in the US for a day and have just had the pizza, a pretzel, and some oysters a guy on the street offered them. They describe in excruciating detail how bad their diarrhea was and how it hit them as they were getting on the subway with a joke to the effect of “Stand clear of the expelling women”. Andrew tries a few times to unsuccessfully explain to them that he is just an actor and that they are shooting. Dua and Ego say that they themselves were “shooting” (referring to the diarrhea). They eventually get it when he says they are on TV. They get all excited, but say they wish they were prepared and Dua laments that she has her small hoops on. And I believe it ends with them realizing that they’re “dia-ruh-rhea” story got recorded and the narrator says that they kept it as revenge for ruining their shoot.
  • This was one of Dua’s best comedic roles all night so it was a shame it was cut. I guess the toilet humor could be a lot for some people, but it worked for me (and I thought the audience liked it).
  • Marcello was also wearing a mustache that IMO was really working for him.
\3. Graduation (live sketch)
  • Bowen Yang, Chloe Troast, Marcello Hernandez, Ego Nwodim, Dua Lipa [Corrected by u/wincew, Dua was not in this], and one or two others are on a college campus. They talk about their upcoming graduation and Chloe Troast with a guitar starts to lead them in a song to the tune of Graduation by Vitamin C. They recap their college experience year by year for a chorus/verse, with every year getting ruined by some world event. For each year, Kenan comes out with the respective NYE glasses for that year and for each bad news topic, they cut to JAJ as an anchor reporting that event. In 2020 they had Covid. Then they had the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Kenan says “How did you forget about January 6th?” The students all say at least they had some good things like corn kid, and the Ice Bucket Challenge (“that was 10 years ago!”). Then they show Ego and Marcello in bed together (still standing with a sheet placed in front of them and a bed stood up behind them), which cuts to Roe v. Wade being overturned. Then graduation comes in 2024, but they find out the ceremony is canceled because [they say something to indicate the Gaza protests, without mentioning them explicitly] reasons.
  • Maybe not the most original observation, but I liked it and liked what it was saying. Not really surprised it got cut though.
\4. Drinks after Work Promotion (live sketch)
  • Bowen Yang, Ego Nwodim, Andrew Dismukes, Dua Lipa, and Molly Kearney (?) are out for drinks at a bar after work. They are talking about a promotion Andrew just got (due to nepotism) and how he is now their boss. Andrew makes a comment about removing a framed photo of Dua and her son. She gets offended since it’s actually a picture of her and her husband. Andrew points out she looks much older than him. Something causes the whole group minus Andrew to sing the song “Don’t Matter” by Akon. Andrew says he loves that song and it’s actually it’s his favorite song. Dua doubts him and asks what his favorite part is. He sings the chorus “Nobody wanna see us together”. Dua points out that his favorite part is just the chorus, to which he responds “that’s why it’s the chorus”. Dua insists he doesn’t actually know the song and challenges him to sing along if she plays it on the jukebox. As the song starts, Andrew sings the chorus, and then when the verse starts, he says his throat is dry and starts sipping his beer. Dua calls him out, but the rest of the group tells her to calm down. He finishes his beer just as the chorus comes back in and sings the chorus. When the next verse comes, he repeats the dry throat thing and grabs Ego’s wine and does the same thing. Dua gets more mad as the group polices her. The next verse Andrew fakes having to sneeze. Then he fakes getting a phone call about his mom being in the hospital “oh she’s okay?” and immediately breaks back into the chorus. He fakes the phone call again, but Dua grabs his phone and throws it. After the group gets upset with her again, she admits she was really just mad about the promotion, cause she really thought she was gonna get it, and is just taking it out on Andrew. Bowen then reminds her that she didn’t get the promotion because she twisted the nipples of the water cooler guy and the only reason she didn’t get fired is because he spilled it on her and she threatened to sue. The sketch ends with Dua and Andrew singing the “best part” together, with Andrew taking a high harmony.
  • I liked it, mainly for Andrew’s killer timing with each of his verse-chorus gags, but I’m not surprised it got cut.
  • As they were setting up this sketch, I waved at Dua and she made eye contact and waved back at me and so I was slightly distracted and starstruck at the beginning of this one.
\5. Babysitter (live sketch)
  • Sophie (Dua Lipa) is trying out for a babysitter gig for parents Mikey Day and Heidi Gardner. She seems to be getting along with the kids (extras) and Mikey and Heidi say how they don’t even want to see the other candidates cause they like Dua. Dua says how she appreciates that they don’t judge her for her past. They didn’t realize she had a past, which leads to her revealing she was in jail for DUIs. But she reassures them she doesn’t drink any more except [punchline I don’t remember]. She also mentions how she can’t read, and how in jail she fell in love with a guy, Winslow. She holds up a crayon drawing the kids made for her, with her as a stick figure behind bars, and written “visiting Sophie at [funny alternate name for jail]”. Mikey reads it aloud and Dua goes “so that’s what it says!” Dua asks if it’s alright that she invited her boyfriend over. There is a knock at the door and it is Kenan as Winslow. He has a long straight black wig and a long straight brown goatee and he is (as described by Mikey) “dressed like Carmen Sandiego”. Dua mentions something implying he runs a cult. Behind him are Chloe Troast and either Sarah Sherman or Chloe Fineman, who are dressed a little like what I imagine a Victorian schoolgirl would look like. Kenan introduces them both as Sophie. Mikey and Heidi ask “did he make you all change your name to Sophie?” to which all the girls confirm. Kenan then asks Heidi if she is “bleeding” because he needs it for a ritual. She is scandalized. The kids come back after interacting with Kenan and they both have red cloaks now, to Heidi and Mikey’s horror. That might have been the end of the sketch, but I can’t remember.
  • I think the weakest sketch of the night so this was a fair cut.
I thought overall it was a good episode, but I personally would have cut the Young Spicy sketch and replaced it with the What Would You Do? sketch.
