2024.05.14 07:09 Vast_Mulberry7330 Is the 2lbs per week upper limit for health or for sustainability?

26F 5'6'' SW:270 CW: 258 GW:140 Desk Job and Couch Lover
I've started doing CICO a little over 3 weeks ago, just eating at a 500cal/day deficit from my TDEE for a goal of 1lb/week of loss. I've been paying attention to eating high protein, which has been working really well and has kept me feeling satisfied, but my weight loss has been faster than expected.
I don't stick to my allowance religiously (regularly go over by 50-100 cals a few days a week) but I've still managed to lose over 2lbs per week. I usually see advice to not go more than 2lbs a week, but is that more for health reasons or for sustainability? I don't feel like I'm starving myself at all, so I'm happy to continue as I've been doing.
I'm also curious if it's possible that this is just an initial burst of loss somehow (maybe water weight?) and it'll taper off.
Any advice would be appreciated! Just want to make sure I'm doing things right and not hurting my future self since I have a long way to go.

2024.05.14 06:54 under_cover_pupper Is it ok to start before trying to conceive?

Iā€™m female, 5ā€™3, 130lb, 31. I weight train 3 times a week and walk around 15K steps every day, as well as do HIIT or cardio 3x week.
My lifts: DL: 190LB Squat: 100LB Bench: 65LB
I have been maintaining weight loss of about 10kg for the last 9 years.
Life things happened and now Iā€™m about 4-6lb fatter than I want to be.
We want to start trying for children, but I want to get back to my normal weight before pregnancy ravages my body. Basically want to start pregnancy from a comfortable point to make it easier afterwards.
Iā€™ve been trying to do a moderate deficit for the last few weeks, eating between 1300-1500 calories. But not seen much movement.
Think itā€™s ok to do this diet for about 2 weeks before we start trying to conceive?
(Note: if I get pregnant of course I would immediately stop the crash diet).

2024.05.14 06:53 AnonymousJrly 24y with chronic pain and NO answers. Please help!

I've had kidney stones since high school. I've passed probably 30. (Diagnosed with cystanuria) But now (past 2 years) around the time I experience flank pain ( not necessarily passing a stone) I also get extreme bone pain. It can be my pelvis, my leg, arm, hand, shoulder, anything. Sometimes it's all of these on one side. My bones crack and my joints get stiff and it's very painful for a while. They've tested me for so much but it always comes back normal. I also have experienced: UTIs, hair loss, weight loss, anemia, random (large) bruises on my legs, face swelling... Typically one side but not the same each time) I went in for more tests today. My CBC only showed 2 things that were off. MCHC was low at 31.7 but it doesn't seem crazy low, and MPV was high at 12.2. Rheumatoid test came back within range and so did c reactive protein.
Please, please, tell me what you would do next. None of my doctors seem to know where to go next.

2024.05.14 06:51 WorthDistribution976 Appetite loss with IUD, at my limit :) doctor is "not concerned" as my 16 appetite loss is "not significant" -- Any advice from anyone who's experienced similar?

18F, 5'7, possible endo, severe menstrual pain and appetite loss. at my limit with my symptoms and have no idea where to go from here.
Around March/April 2023 I began having 2 periods a month, significantly heavier than usual and significantly more painful than I've ever had. This pain has been so significant it will make me curl to the ground when I have cramps, even with alternating 800mg Ibuprofen 2-4x daily and Tylenol.
had been on Hailey Fe 1.5/30 for 4 years, and after discussing with my doctor I then went on Ortho-Cyclen (28). My doctor believed it to be PCOS after my ovaries appearsd to have too many immature follicules (I've had 4 ultrasounds since, all of which state everything looks normal), and stayed the Ortho-Cyclen was more effective for women with PCOS). I had no improvement and continued pain, so we discussed the potential of Endometriosis (I also have cyclic difficulty urinating with my period), and I had the Mirena IUD inserted.
Shortly after insertion (~2 weeks) I began noticing appetitie loss (not nausea, more just a complete lack of desire to eat food, nothing seems appetitizing ever and forcing it down makes me feel sick). Besides this, I've had a great experience with the IUD- no bleeding, and while I still have pain, it's tolerable if I alternate Ibuprofen and Tylenol.
Fast foward to now, the appetite loss has gotten so severe that I'm having difficulty eating more than a few bites of food a day. I haven't lost a TON of weight, but I feel insanely weak. I'm usually very active as I'm a full-time college student and figure skate (usually 1-2 hours, 5-6 days per week, now managing once or twice a weak for maybe 30 minutes). I had a hard time getting in with my regular doctor so I was placed with a different OBGYN, who told me it likely wasn't the IUD and to drink smoothies and protein shakes and cream (which I was already doing, main source of nutrition over the past 3 months). She also did several blood tests, which showed nothing other than a slightly elevated Anion Gap (14 iirc). I was told my next option would be remove the IUD and get a Kyleena placed, although that would carry the risk of returned pain. I was told if that would happen, I could get a laproscopic surgery to check for and remove any endometrial lesions. I weighed around 146 at this appointment at the beginning of March. I began bleeding once a month like a regular period just after this appointment as well, after having no bleeding since the insertion (the strings are still in place).
I had no improvement in symptoms and noticeably lost weight, so I visited another doctor (again, could not get in to see either previous doctor until June). At this visit on April 4th, I weighed 128 (~16 lb weight loss). This doctor was incredibly dismissive (as well as two different nurses saying to my face "they wished they had my problem") ans told me she's never seen a case where someone has had appetite loss from IUD and that it was more likely another medication of mine.
I'm on 300mg Modafinil daily for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome I developed in 2022 after getting Influenza A. I've been on this medication since early August 2023 (1.5 months after getting the IUD placed). While I had no increases appetitie loss after starting it, I had suspected this to be the case, so I paused taking it to find no difference in my symptoms back in January. I told her this and she said while she would take the IUD out, she doesn't believe it to be the cause and provided no further discussion on options.
I found IUD insertion to be rather uncomfortable, but no where near as painful as my menstrual cramps. That said, I really didn't want to remove the Mirena and replace it with a Kyleena unless I needed to. I followed up my primary and decided to take a 3 week break from the Modafinil. I've had absolutely zero improvement in symptoms.
Im about to make my appointment to swap the IUDS, but I'm just so frustrated with the care I've recieved.
I understand my weight loss isn't that significant, but for someone like me who has a very consistent weight and a very active lifestyle, it is for me. I can't function how I need to, and my symptoms are interfering with my life significantly. I still have no idea if its PCOS or endometriosis, but I feel my symptoms better align with endo.
Is there any advice anyone can give me going forward? I'm terrified the pain is going to come back after swapping these IUDs, as the pain is so bad I can't handle it twice a month. I can't continue not eating either.
Thank you to anyone who got this far

2024.05.14 06:46 Advanced-Brief1673 Need some advice slowing down weight loss and maintaining current weight

Hey all, I was let go from my position at my office job on April 19th and decided I wanted to start losing some weight. For reference, Iā€™m 6ā€™3 and was at 246 pounds at my last doctorā€™s office visit on April 16th. Fast forward to this past Saturday, May 11th, I was down to 233 pounds. Thatā€™s definitely a lot of weight lost in a short amount of time. That being said, throughout high school and college I was in the 170-pound range and gained a significant amount of weight during and after COVID.
My regimen has simply been cutting carbs and implementing a quick at-home workout almost every day, typically no more than 20 mins. Other than that Iā€™m far more sedentary than I should be. The issue I think Iā€™m facing, though, is either eating too few calories or eating too infrequently throughout the day. For example, yesterday I maybe consumed 1300-1400 calories, and most of that was lunch at Chiliā€™s while watching the NBA playoffs. I also did a quick workout afterward that burned about 230 calories.
Since Iā€™m not working, my sleep schedule has also been thrown off. I was consistently getting up at 6:20 every morning, but since being let go Iā€™ve had multiple post 11 AM mornings, including a few post-noon wake up times. Iā€™m going to work on that for sure!
Iā€™d like to keep my weight where it is for right now, at 233 (give or take a couple pounds), with the eventual goal to get down to about 215-220. What should I do? According to the Mayo Clinic calorie calculator, I should be consuming around 3050 calories per day to maintain my weight. Should I aim for a little bit lower, maybe 2200-2500/day, to kind of slow down the weight loss before focusing on maintaining it?
This is all very new to me because I was below 200 pounds for over 20 years of my life! I definitely feel a lot better than I did 13 pounds ago but Iā€™m worried Iā€™m losing too much without realizing it, and I donā€™t want to do any damage to myself. Any help yā€™all can offer would be fantastic. Thanks!

2024.05.14 06:26 PopInternational4982 Day 5 - Last Hope

I grew up in the Deep South. The land of beef, cheese, and fried chicken. While I have drastically changed my diet from what I was raised on, I have never given the plant based diet a second thought. Until now. 24M.
I am 6ā€™2 250 pounds at 19% body fat. I am far from the 300 pound (29% BF) offensive lineman that I once was, but I still have yet to achieve a lean physique even with tedious calorie counting and exercise. More importantly than my looks, I would really just love to feel better, have more energy, and wake up in a less awful head space. I have bought into the low carb life time and time again and I just do not believe that is the way that the creator of mankind meant for us to eat. I have experimented with every diet in the book but this one.
Everyone in my family is overweight, and my mother is on her last straw before she goes through with a weight loss surgery. She has also lived a lifetime of failed diets that have left her hungry, insulin resistant, and overweight. I am committed to a minimum of 30 day WFPB diet in hopes of seeing results that I can share with my mom.
The Starch Solution makes great sense to me, and I am optimistic about weeks to come. I know for my mother to lose weight sustainably, it has got to be something that leaves her consistently satiated. That is what I hope to find in this new adventure.
I will say, on days 4 and 5, my fatigue is increased, and my mood is lower, especially upon waking. And I know for a FACT it is not a calorie shortage. My hope is that I am going through dairy withdrawal, as I have never gone this long without a great bit a of cheese before.
PLEASE WISH ME LUCK. PLEASE SHARE ANY THOUGHTS AND/OR SUCCESS STORIES!

2024.05.14 06:16 Next_Professor Contrave and ADHD

Hi everyone. I am on my third week of Contrave for my weight loss journey. However, i have noticed so much other differences in my life, especially when it comes to my ADHD. Firstly, i have no desire to spend money like i used to before. I have no desire to online shop and buy a whole bunch of clothes etc... and this is unusual for me bc every pay week i spenddddddddd. Secondly, my mind feels less cluttered? I feel like i can be more organised and less reactive idk how to explain it. Thirdly, I feel less impulsive and more happy?
Also, for what i started the meds for... i don't binge as much as i usually would have before. I'm glad for that but also the other changes within me I'm like wow
I researched the drug (bc i hadnt when i first began taking it) and Bupropion is in Contrave and i was reading some papers online and that can help with adhd.
I was wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences?
Also, can i be on this drug longterm or is it only meant for that 16week period?
Interested to hear peoples experiences!

2024.05.14 06:12 ParoSparrow79 Stepson & wife are cruel & hurtful to me for no reason

So, this has been going on for 5 years and I'm reaching the point of explosion!!!!!
I'm (35) married to my husband (55)
He has a son (22) who has just gotten married to his wife (20). His son is a narcissist and has been that way since the day I met him. He is very talented at a number of things (motocross, golf, etc.) And he is a hard worker. By all outward appearances he's a good person and can be very kind at times.
The issue is that he is very spoiled and has always been given the best of the best. ($1,200 phones, $7,000 dirtbikes, the nicest clothes and shoes and blah blah blah)
His mother is loaded and buys him cars, clothes, coach backpacks, $400 shoes for no reason, spends $2,000+ on his birthdays and Christmases and just bows down to his every want and need
I was raised with the power getting shut off every 3 months bc my single mother struggled to keep the lights on. I shopped (and still shop) at thrift stores and I've NEVER cared about having flashy expensive THINGS. There is more to life than stuff.
Anyway... his son will always say things like "where did you get that shirt? Wish?" He will pick on me about my hobbies. Pretty much saying the things I enjoy doing are lame.
If I started talking about politics or any kind of REAL issues going on in the world he would dismiss what I'm saying and say that I'm a conspiracy theorist (meanwhile, his world revolves around tic-tok and video games)
After he got married things have gotten much worse. Keep in mind, his wife is 20 and I'm 35.
He will compare how she looks to how I look. We went on a boat trip and she wore a bathing suit while I wore shorts and a tank top. I'm not fat by any means, but I would LOVE to lose around 15lbs and have the flat little tummy I once did.
His wife is 4 inches taller than me and has huge boobs and a completely different body style. I never once compared myself to her or envied her in any way, but he will say things to me like "how much do weigh?" And then ask her how much she weighs...and then say "how do you guys look so different when your only 5-10lbs difference" he makes me so self conscious and insecure comparing me to someone who is 15 years younger than me FOR NO REASON EXCEPT TO HURT ME.
She says things to me too.
We were playing pickle ball today. First time I ever played and I was doing so-so
My team was behind and she hollered out to my team mate "do you want me to come out there and take her place" (talking about me)
If I try to have a discussion with her about anything she will find some way to argue with Mr and tell me I'm wrong and it's impossible to have any kind of real diologue with her UNLESS IT IS ABOUT HER AND HER INTERESTS
It gets worse
Me and my husband have a 4 year old daughter who was born with a cleft pallette in the roof of her mouth and she's had surgeries and is taking speech therapy and is doing great
Well, my stepson and his wife just had a baby (5 months)
My stepson (in front of like 6 people/family members) said to me "our son is perfect, what's the matter, why can't you have a perfect baby too"? THAT IS HIS FUKKIN SISTER!!!!!
I race motocross with them every weekend. It's my husband's son/family and we see them often
LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE TIME WE SEE THEM ONE (OR BOTH) SAY SOMETHING CRUEL TO ME.
I'm a very encouraging person. My stepsons wife gained a lot of weight after her pregnancy and when she started losing the weight I'd tell her "you look so pretty today" or "you look great"
I have TRIED to lead by example and treat them how I want to me treated.
They NEVER tell me "good job" or say anything nice/positive to me. They feed off of hurting and picking on other people to make themselves feel better. They talk shut constantly and I'm nothing like that and don't want to be.
I smile and pretend things dont hurt me so that I don't rock the boat. I don't stand up for myself and don't even know how to.
Normally when I'm around toxic people like this I avoid them and cut them out of my life, but I'm at a loss for ideas and don't know how to move forward.
Any advice or encouragement would be most welcome. I've talked to my husband but he doesn't know how to handle it and doesn't want to talk to his son because his son picks on him too and my husband doesn't seem to care. I don't think he understands why I am so hurt/upset by it in the first place.
Mt husband always says "he was just joking" or "he didn't mean it"....THE GASLIGHTING IS UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!
Thanks for letting me vent. God bless you all.

2024.05.14 06:11 1994Miataa Unwanted weight loss

I (23M) have always been around 145lbs which is on the light side considering Iā€™m 6ā€™. I was going to the gym rather regularly the past year - year and a half and got to 155 lbs and lost any real fat I had, so I looked in shape.
Fast forward to now. Iā€™ve graduated college and started a new job in a new area. Iā€™ve lost 15-20lbs in 4 months and look significantly different, and feel way weaker.
Why?
I always eat when I am hungry (2 large meals a day + snacks any time I want) and eat until I am full. But I still lose weight? I donā€™t eat junk food and 90% of my meals have some sort of protein (steak, beef or chicken).
The only thing I can think of is Iā€™m expending more calories now I am working, but why am I not able to eat more?!

2024.05.14 06:11 tattedsparrowxo I feel awful and rundown 24:7

This isnā€™t really a mom post but I feel better posting here than in a doctor sub, as they can be pretty rude. Would really love some insight if any of you had this happen and what it was?
For the past few years I have felt crappy most days than few. Lately this past year itā€™s been a nightmare. In may 2023 I had a random cyst thatā€™s been deep under my skin rupture and it turned out to be an extremely rare type of staph and an unidentified other type of bacteria. I was on 2 antibiotics before I was sent to the hospital. I was then admitted and on 3 iv antibiotics and it kept getting worse and I kept having reactions to literally every antibiotic. They ended up having to cut a gold ball sized hole to clear the junk out and I was in patients 14 days and had a nurse come daily for 3 months to my house. Then in December I caught Covid and was admitted four days and in February flu b and admitted another 7 days because my body was going ape shit. High BP High HR High Temp and no meds helped. Now I have more cysts than ever and have literally waited a year to get into a derm. All my bloodwork is perfect minus low iron. Iā€™m so over how I feel. Iā€™m nauseated 24/7, tired all the time, get boughts of high heart rates for days on end (135-147) (normal ecg minus tachycardia) feel like Iā€™m going to pass out, dissociate all the time, horrible memory, periods are all out of wack, smell burning all the time or rubber, itch all over, bad constipation or diarrhea, a crawling and burning sensation in my skin, my face is always red, I feel malnutritioned even though Iā€™m 214 and havenā€™t lost weight. I eat healthy 80/100 and am active at work. I drink a ton of water, watch my sugar and dairy and grains. I donā€™t do drugs, I do smoke ciggs sometimes, but I feel like Iā€™m stuck in flight or fight. I canā€™t sleep, and when I do sleep Iā€™m either up every hour or out for 12. I have dark circles under my eyes and my teeth are basically rotting and canā€™t find a dentist who will take my insurance. Literally every blood test Iā€™ve had is fine! Iā€™m to the point I cry every night and at work because itā€™s too hard on my body. Iā€™m a single mom and this job is the only one I have and I canā€™t find anything remote or anything that pays better. I donā€™t know what to do. Iā€™m seriously depressed and anxious 24/7. Has anyone had any of these symptoms? Even in the hospital the doctor kept saying it sounded like withdrawal but Iā€™m literally on no drugs that would cost me to withdraw. I take Ativan maybe once a week if Iā€™m having a panic attack only. My doctor is at a loss.
To add, when I do eat I immediately want to vomit but donā€™t and even water fills my stomach yet Iā€™m still over weight. Iā€™m starting to think itā€™s all inflammation.

2024.05.14 06:04 frenchynerd I just found blood in my stools

I am seeing the doctor tomorrow because of loss of weight in the pass months and change in bowel habits. I do have IBS.
I am already worried because I lost too much weight. Up to recently, I was brushing this off on my IBS.
But as my symptoms are getting worse, I have been more and more worried until my nutritionnist told me I needed medical advice.
And now, tonight, I found blood in my stools.
You can imagine my level of anxiety now.

2024.05.14 06:01 noparkingafter8 Normal fasting insulin levels and metformin

Hi all!
I have PCOS and today I asked my doctor for advice on weight loss medications. I told her I was curious into getting labs done to measure insulin resistance and interested in exploring metformin. She ran a fasting insulin test today. It came back in the normal range but she is still happy to prescribe me metformin (500mg ER). Has anyone with normal range fasting insulin levels seen weight loss results on metformin?

2024.05.14 06:00 RevolutionaryStep801 Trying To Regain Effectiveness

Iā€™m M(53), starting weight 280, current weight 240. I guess Iā€™ve been taking tirzepatide for about 14 weeks.
Last Wednesday, I took my first shot of compounded 7.5 mg from Red Rock. That came after I had missed a shot for 10 days, which was obv due to the shortage and is what prompted me to order compounded. Before missing a shot, I had done 2 boxes of Zep-branded 5 mg, and 1 box of 2.5 Zep-branded before that.
For the first few weeks, my weight loss was almost too fast. I had lost something like 30 pounds in 4 weeks. And I lost some weight during the first round of 5 mg, but then it just stopped. I have been around 240 for weeks, and had hoped that starting 7.5 would jump start the process again, but so far it hasnā€™t. Moreover, the pattern that developed during the 10-day lag has if anything gotten worse. Virtually no appetite suppression, been craving sweets like I always did, and I donā€™t get full easily. So Iā€™m eating full meals and eating sweets and feel like a big olā€™ failure.
Anyone had experience with losing efficacy? Suggestions on how to get back on track? All thoughts welcome and appreciated.
