2024.05.06 19:10 TheDabitch Rysk desinformation inför EU-valet: ”Kan påverka på slagfältet i Ukraina”

Runtom Europa stålsätter man sig för rysk desinformation inför EU-valet i juni.
https://www.dn.se/varlden/rysk-desinformation-infor-eu-valet-kan-paverka-pa-slagfaltet-i-ukraina/
Men texterna verkar maskinöversatta, säger Åsa Larsson.

2024.03.12 17:35 sean_ocean Techno-Funk Theory

Funk is a very Detroit thing, it’s only natural to have it become incorporated into Techno.
A Short History of Funk:
James Jamerson in the Detroit Motown house band, the Funk Brothers had a style where he was bouncing over the beat with the bass. Quickly hooking the one finger down and picking it up in a bounding motion. Which was found more prevalent in upright bass and Jazz (notably in Mingus’ Haitian Fight Song). Incidentally, Carol Kaye also took this approach after being in Jazz bands as a teenager and went on to take this concept of Jazz Bass and Jazz Guitar and make it pop as a session musician. The defining difference to these approaches as opposed to prior use of bass in traditional Western music is that the Jazz bass is rhythmic rather than merely just a root note to a harmony. This is why in Detroit they say “Jazz is the Teacher.” Not only in the sense of rhythm but in the sense of experimentation and personal expression.
James Brown was asked to be signed to Motown but James Brown refused to sign with Barry Gordy in Motown because Brown thought the label was too pop-oriented. I feel like James Brown wanted more freedom to lead with the rhythm rather than the melody, which was more widely accepted abroad since in Europe more people were listening more to the music and did not understand English lyrics so well. For example, my Mother recalls her time in Amsterdam in the '60s when there were people just listening and dancing to James Brown in cafes.
“I was hearing everything, even the guitars, like they were drums,” James Brown would later write in his autobiography about his time as a drummer in the Famous Flames before becoming their singer.
James Brown’s effect on music rhythm and the flow of musical phrasing was a massive change to music as a whole. Instead of focusing on the backbeat of rock music, the 2 and 4 (the “claps”, 16 step sequence numbers 5, 13) James Brown focused on the 1, the headnote. This made music what was later to be called Funk. This can be traced back to James Brown’s Gospel Music origins where there’s a call and response to the preacher. The "call" is the end of the phrase and the response is the headnote.
Funk music, often called just “the funk” as it relates to the concept, also established the framework for syncopation and adding space for other elements to move in the phrase based on a riff, IMO also setting the foundations for what groove-based music was. I believe he based this musical framework so that he could be a conductor, but also a singer. This headnote of the phrase helped signify where everyone should stay together and on time. You could be lost as a musician, but always find your way back home to the head note as long as it is well defined.
Clyde Stubblefield, while employed in James Brown's band as a drummer, set a template for Funk in a rhythmic sense. Rather than just the bass notes for a melodic phrase, Stubblefield helped solidify the rhythmic portion in the famous “Funky Drummer” solo. The crack of the snare is the "call", and the bass drum is the root, the headnote "response". Which in turn could be easily reinforced with a note on a bass guitar for more emphasis. The various shuffling in between these notes in the “Funky Drummer” pattern left room open for improvisation or more rhythmic tension, based on what the other members of the band were doing. But also that shuffle sped up the phrase in timing so there’s a real sense of compression and rarefaction in the rhythm. The compression of the phrase coming at the end and the rarefaction coming at the head note. In classical terms, this is called conjunct and disjunct movement. It’s important to note that all “groove” is based on this movement. The busy versus the austere in the rhythm. And Stubblefield’s Funky Drummer set the precedent as a popular example. The busyness of the rhythm sets up a difficult tension before the resolution on the head note. Jazz drummers previously had a long history with swing and syncopation prior to this but there wasn’t much in the way of emphasizing any single headnote for the phrase. Accents were there, but they shifted them as they pleased.
Bootsy Collins was also in James Brown’s band (so was Jimi Hendrix at one point or another). After he took his teachings from being with the James Brown band, with its emphasis on the headnote Bootsy Collins moved on to Parliament Funkadelic headed up by George Clinton. Parliament had its roots in Detroit as a Motown band but seemed to later become a James Brown inspired big band supergroup. With Bootsy and Clinton on board with other very open-minded and talented musicians, as well as the strength of late 70s high-wattage counterculture substances, the Funk became way more psychedelic and pushed to the extremes, as did the bass and drum styles started to become more aggressive and percussive. Parliament Funkadelic explored wild ideas and investigated irreverent themes as well as afro-futurism and space travel, since at the time, the US was still landing people on the moon and the dawn of the space age was apparently at hand. Parliament Funkadelic and James Brown’s influence on culture, and especially black culture was everywhere. From the Ohio Players, to Disco worldwide.
Seemingly inspired by this aesthetic, Richard Davis with Juan Atkins in Cybotron wrote Alleyways of Your Mind and the Electro-Funk they made came out in 1981 and was rumored to also be partially inspired by Kraftwerk’s numbers and Yellow Magic Orchestra. The rubberband bass line in that track and synth line is Funk personified.
Meanwhile Jamaican DJ Kool Herc, Charlie Chase, Red Alert, Grandmaster Flash, and others started messing with breaks and James Brown records and other breaks in the foundations of New York Hip Hop in 1973 through 1978, backspinning to the start of the drum break solo, breakbeat, middle 8, or breakdown sections of existing records. Emphasizing the idea of making music with repeating phrases. This eventually led to New York Electro being championed by Afrika Bambaata and the Soulsonic Force with their song “Planet Rock” in 1983. Similarly, Bambaata et al find their own sound with Funk and Kraftwerk’s Trans Europe Express while adding more of a Hip-Hop feel. The subject of the influence of Hip-Hop DJing and its massive influence on DJ culture is an article for another day, but it bears repeating that a lot of the DJing tricks and tropes electronic music uses comes from a great deal of Hip Hop DJing innovations.
Miami Bass is starting to pop off around this time as well. Experimenting with how far the lowest of the low bass can go. But also keeping the rhythm of Funk and Electro a part of their sound.
Detroit Techno I feel is a mash-up genre primarily based initially on Chicago House and Electro-Funk. The first Techno album in 1988 has some incarnations of both these concepts and rhythms played on top of each other. Before this, people like Frankie Knuckles in Chicago were experimenting with hot mixing drum machines to disco records in the early 80s before House Music as a genre was fully fleshed out and the DJ, Electrifying Mojo was on Detroit Radio playing everything with everything.
Juan Atkins was also reported to be hot-mixing as well at house parties but layering 808s under his DJ sets where most likely a Chicago house record was thrown in, and assuming his Electro Funk background, he had some electro patterns in the drum machine already and would most likely have found an interesting sound with house music and electro being layered. The idea for Techno itself, I think, would be to make house music more advanced and technical sounding than being just an 808 under disco instrumentals... as with the invention of house music. Much like how Kraftwerk was future-forward aesthetically, Techno would be a future-forward statement of House. In that sense, I feel like it was a deliberate experiment that did not have a name before it became “Techno” but it might be a happy accident where it just wound up that way.
Derrick May once famously described Techno as being, "The music is just like Detroit, a complete mistake. It’s like George Clinton and Kraftwerk are stuck in an elevator with only a sequencer to keep them company.”
“Mad Mike” Banks was a former Detroit studio musician (bass/guitar), having played with Parliament/Funkadelic among others. And started collaborating with other Detroit Techno artists like Jeff Mills and Robert Hood in the group Underground Resistance. Which as a concept, was an antithesis to the music industry he had gotten a distaste for as a musician. Which in turn helped to create a deeper underground aesthetic and distaste for the spotlight, instead, embracing humility and culture. Which then eventually set the tone and pace for Techno culture as a whole, i.e. throwing away the spotlight and letting the music speak.
Long after Funk was well incorporated into dance music and Electro.. loop-based music became more and to the forefront since sampling on an MPC led itself to this very easily and conceptually. Since hip hop was about ‘backspinning’ records, with an MPC60 you could take this concept and loop break beats indefinitely. But mind you this is all still based on James Brown’s phrasing structure. Hitting on the one. Even scratching relies heavily on finding your head note and improvisation within the beats.
Fast forward past the fundamentally groundbreaking Acid House era, loop-based Techno has been championed by Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, and a whole host of others in Techno around the globe. The major reason for Techno becoming more loop oriented and machine like, especially in shorter loops is that drum machines on loops next to samplers sequenced in loop mode makes for a bangin’ crunchy and powerful sound, i.e. a more industrial sound. But still, a sound that is simple and meant to be more complex when layered in a DJ set. However, as hard as Mills got, and as Minimal as Hood got, there’s still an essence of the funk from Detroit in their music.
This work also was not lost on Cisco of The Advent. Who had been inspired by New York Electro, and also worked as a sound engineer with Adonis and Fingers Inc. in the early 90s. And still, this concept was not lost to other harder minimal Techno in 97/98 and eventually to other producers like Ben Sims, and UseDean Cole. Dean Cole’s main idea with the User series was just to make some tools records to beef up some weaker Techno in a long blend during DJ sets (DJs, hold your blends!). But they became so well-loved, that a lot of people considered them very strong Techno tracks in their own right, and have a very strong influence on Techno. But using loops and especially taking James Brown’s samples and fitting them into his music is also a reference to using Acid House era Sample CDs which sampled James Brown mercilessly. But again, this sampling idea comes from hip hop where James Brown and Soul Jazz are very common to sample.
These records by Dean Cole are still being heralded as some of the most influential sounds in Techno some 25 years later. For example, Truncate has cited User as his inspiration for making a tools-based record label for his tools-based tracks and the basis for his simplified aesthetic. Which has also in turn, the label has helped inspire and usher in an era of a stripped-down foundational Techno sound we still hear today.
----
So where are we? At the heart of it, we have the theory of Funk and how it relates to Techno.
We have the rhythmic bass, from Jazz and Motown. We have the phrasing from James Brown which established what groove was at least publicly on a grand scale. We also have from James Brown, an emphasis on the headnotes that help guide the listener. We’ve discussed psychedelic afrofuturism and making the Funk more elastic with Parliament Funkadelic. And we have established that Electro, Funk, and House are very much tied to the origins of Techno, as well as being still very present in it.
But what makes a Techno track funky, and more importantly, how?
Answer: Timing, accents, and tonic and dominant shifts. Immediately I can sense some people are shutting down. Let’s break that down.
Timing in that we have to set up expectation and release, and to do that in a very funky way, we have to make the groove very elastic so that it gets stretched as long as it can before it snaps into place at the head note. The more elastic the timing, the funkier it gets.
Accents in that the headnotes must be the strongest of the phrase. Slamming it down.
Tonic is the root note or the central part of the song. In Techno, it is often the kick playing the part of the headnote or root at the beginning of the bar. As far as you stray away from the root, you need to provide the kick for the relief or in other cases a harder punch from winding back so far in timing.
The dominant is a note that’s opposite of the tonic. Sometimes it can be a fifth (seven semitones) or if you want to be interesting you can use sevenths, or 6ths for more tension.
Hold up tho, Techno isn’t exactly entirely about harmonic theory, so how do we represent this in something else other than just notes on a piano going up and down the scale? Since the kick is the root, you can use other things like bass rhythmically away from the tonic, but also tuned drums and sequenced synth hits as if they were drums to hammer home the idea of tension.
The groove pattern itself is very important, the overall pattern should look as if in synthesis terms like a long attack and zero decay/release. Or can be visually represented as a big reverse saw wave over the whole pattern. And the sound should feel like you’re scraping up your pattern and throwing it down, even so fast that the action of throwing it down sounds as though it’s going backward constantly; leading up and hitting hard down on the one. In dance terms, this is literally the action of a head bang. Slow back. Fast forward (If you’re banging your head now, I love you).
If using speech or prosody to define the funk progression, you could just define it by saying this over and over..”Makefunkytracksmakefunkytracks” which I think is a sample in an old DJ Misjah track. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, or hook me up with the track ID.
In this example, depending on your English accent, you can say out loud that the “Ma-“ is the dominant of the phrase and the “cks” part of the Tonic which goes down fast and quickly. In this case, the phrase is going over the end of the bar line. And the “cks” on the 1 is accenting the root with a crunchy syllable making the headnote hit harder. Take note that having the phrase move over the bar line also helps with the push/pull of the song. This also helps smooth over any abruptly ended parts of choppy bars in Techno.
16 step sequence:
1- Cks
2- _
3- Ma
4- Ke
5- Fu
6- Nk
7- Y
8- TRa
---
9- Cks
10- _
11- Ma 12- Ke
13- Fu
14- Nk
15- Y
16- TRa
When you realize what this sound is and start hearing it, it’s everywhere in dance music, but also in music as a whole. If you want a perfect portrayal of this characterization. It’s repeated in absolutely everything the Red Hot Chili Peppers have ever done. From their ballads to Give it Away. Scraping it up and throwing down the funk in various motifs and iterations. Over short bars and over longer bars. Long over short, etc.
When you hear it in Techno, it’s more subtle or used as one musical idea among many others than the main idea (Techno is conceptually diverse, another whole essay can be written on the subject of Musique Concrète’s influence). Funk is certainly the motif that is modified by the contrast of the straight beats underneath. Much like how I believe Electro-Funk and House contrasted each other in early Techno. A new release I heard by Paul Ritch the other week has this very idea in a synth line just as much and it creates this rigid push/pull feeling of tension In the mix without clearly stating it to any degree. The funk is more or less felt but also can become heard as the sequenced synth pattern itself mimics the Funk aesthetic. For musicians who grew up with this concept, it’s such a part of dance music that you might not be aware you’re making it.. but I found it’s certainly helpful to be aware of it so that you know exactly where to go in the music to find it.. but also more importantly how to evolve it in your own terms.
Where can you go wrong with this in Techno?
Techno cannot take an entire bassline and do a melodic progression with the bass as in House Music, because that would wake you up from a hypnotic state and have a direct reference to existing music and not stand as its unique conceptual idea within the context of Techno.. it must instead, take all the elements in the pattern or phrase and make it feel as though it’s being thrown down. Otherwise, the track is too progressive. Trying to do too much with a literal bassline will make your Techno sound weird and poppy. This is why people try to do a lot with rumble or whatnot because it’s like a bassline but it’s a single-note syncopation off the kick or a low tom that helps with the push-pull of the track without changing pitch too much. But you can try to harmonize the kick with other elements at the end of the phrase to increase the tension before the head note, such as with a tom or other synth hit.
-
What’s Funky Techno then? Funky Techno is a genre based on the more house-centered aspects of Soul, Funk, and groove and blends it with the futuristic aspects of Techno. Funk is an inherent part of Techno itself, yes, but Funky Techno comes more from house to Techno than from Techno to House. Funky Techno adds minor Techno elements to House, while still emphasizing and prioritizing the funkier aspects of House music. For example, DJ Dan from SF who was a huge proponent of this sound said that he was always surprised at what kind of damage a Umek track could do to a dance floor. And in SF at the time he was DJing very much to a house audience. DJ Dan also had been known to mix up Breakbeat Hardcore, and Hip Hop at 45 speed since it was difficult to find a lot of Techno or house records that had to be imported from outside California in the early 90s.
Wait, you say you believe that Techno is a mashup genre of House with futuristic elements and Electro Funk concepts.. then what is Electro House, Tech House, and Future House?
Yes, House is the origin, but even House Music comes from Disco and drum machine improvisation beefing up the low end of a disco cut. There are whole swaths of Disco House records in the 90s where there are just filtered disco loops and drum machines underneath. This is Daft Punk’s origin story with Roulé Records. So too it was Frankie Knuckles and hot mixing that got us there in the 80s.
The unwritten history of DJing is that all DJs layer this thing with that to make ____. So if you’re out to combine existing Techno with House, you have Tech House. If you have the long lineage of Electro and its evolution, you cherry pick which parts you like and you combine it with house many years after 1988, you’re going to get a new result similar to Booka Shade, which is entirely based on the conceptual approach of that period in electronic music history. Also, the various conceptual approaches of combining genres often lead to one main idea standing out as the most prominent conceptual idea. This goes for all genres within Electronic Music. Combinations of ideas with one particular idea leading the other parts. For example, “Breakbeat Hardcore”, what does that mean?
Think about it.
DJing is really alchemy when you think about it. But in essence, this is the freedom in which DJs can express the changes in the medium of the genres within which they work. And a side note; if you’re not experimenting with layering in DJing, you’re truly missing out. Chicago taught us to hold our blends in order to make a new track. This is the real art of the DJ, to create music from disparate sources that would never normally exist and if you are doing it in front of an audience live, it will never exist the same way again, ever. Techno itself is a relatively vast genre. You could create something interesting just by playing Deep Techno with funkier flavored Techno or mixing Ambient Techno with Industrial Techno. Or, if you’re looking to progress the feeling of your tracks, play a hypnotic record with a funky feel to it. There’s lots to say within the genre alone. When you find something that is conceptually unique to an artist in the Techno genre you can choose to highlight it as a DJ.
Do yourself a favor and hold your blends. See what you can say with them as a DJ and artist.

Why should we bother with such an antiquated idea as Funk? Other than its the foundation for a great deal of Western Music, it is easy to understand musically, and the message of the movement in it as well as the message can be well communicated. It’s easy to dance to funky music. We like the jerkiness of it and the comforting familiarity of always landing in the same place… even though it’s the job of the musician to tease as much of this away as possible before setting in relief.
But as stated, you need to know what Funk is in order to appreciate it, where it came from, how it has been used, and how you relate to it so you can help it evolve within Techno music as a whole. It’s difficult to fathom just how far Techno developed within the years of 1993-1999. We as a community need to keep pursuing original and fresh ideas. The only way to do that is to keep looking at our history of what came before and speak to that historical progression according to each individual’s own terms.
I think maybe another reason why Funk is so well embraced unilaterally is the message it sent to people. For James Brown, it meant that everyone had to get together and come together as a culture (Get involved, get into it). In Bambaata’s idea of Hip Hop, after recovering from many years of gang violence in the 70s, it meant Peace, Love, Unity, and Having fun. In UR’s version of Techno, it represents authenticity, musicality, and continuity of Detroit culture. In George Clinton’s version, it spoke to freedom and originality. Embracing the strange atmosphere, Funkadelic concerts had a vibe where everyone was included. No matter who you were. Because in Parliament Funkadelic’s version of the Funk ethos, it’s ok to be weird and different, even to extremes or excess. Be who you are, and be open to others who have that expression.. because, after all, we’re just one nation under a groove.

2024.01.09 23:15 NoNameLegion_ The Wargame trilogy in the TNOverse

What if the Wargame series was hypothetically set in the TNO universe?
DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT A MOD OR EVEN A PLAN FOR A MOD, FOR EITHER WARGAME OR TNO. I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT MODDING. THIS IS MERELY A "WHAT IF?" HYPOTHETICAL I MADE BECAUSE I WAS BORED.
The Wargame series is a series of three real-time strategy games published by french developer Eugen. They focus on an alternate history where the Cold war goes hot (without the use of nukes, obviously.)
I got bored one day, so I decided to create a hypothetical plan for the Wargame series, but set in TNO’s timeline.
This assumes a few things in the TNO timeline, mostly so the factions can have a decent number of nations:
Honestly, the British Civil War could go either way, so I’m including both Collab UK and Free Britain as separate factions

Features

While Wargame of our timeline has only two factions (REDFOR and BLUFOR), TNO Wargame has four:

Titles

As the Wargame series has three games, each one generally putting a new region in focus, this one will as well:
(names are placeholders because I lack creativity)

Factions

Note: coalitions are only added in Wargame: Pacific Storm
any nations marked as "possibly" would likely not be included for not being militarily distinct enough, but are there as an idea.

BLUFOR

Introduced in European Blitz. The OFN and others aligned with it.

Nations

Name Game Introduced
United States Wargame: European Blitz
Canada
Free Britain
Australia + New Zealand (ANZAC) Wargame: African Dawn
South Africa
Free France
West Indies Federation (possibly)
India Wargame: Pacific Storm
Brazil

Coalitions

NORAD
Commonwealth

GOLDFOR

name sounds nonsensical, i know. The Reich, and its followers.

Nations

Name Game Introduced
German Reich Wargame: European Blitz
Burgundy
French State
United Kingdom (Collab UK)
Deitsland (independent, Pakt-aligned Denmark)
Hungary
Romania
Denmark (possibly)
Norway (possibly)
Finland (possibly)
Ireland (possibly)
Afrika-Schild (all three african RKs + Boers) Wargame: African Dawn
Imperial Iran (possibly)
United Arab Republic (possible, but quite unlikely)
Argentina (also highly unlikely, if not here, then likely with the Triumvirate in the Independent faction.) Wargame: Pacific Storm

Coalitions

Großgermanisches Reich
the Triumvirate could possibly be in the pakt faction as well, but unlikely.

REDFOR

Introduced in Wargame: Pacific Storm. The Sphere and other Japanese-aligned nations.

Nations

Name
Japan
Republic of China
Free India
Indonesia
Cameroon (Only in Wargame: Pacific Storm, otherwise is an independent)
Guangdong

INDFOR

Introduced in Wargame: African Dawn. a catch-all for any nation that doesn't fit in to the big three, even by the mental gymnastics of this post.

Nations

Name Game Introduced
Italy Wargame: African Dawn
Iberia
Turkey
Cameroon (Only in Wargame: African Dawn. Once the Sphere is introduced, Cameroon becomes part of it.)
National Protection Army Wargame: Pacific Storm
Argentina

Coalitions

Triumvirate

Conclusion

feel free to call out any of the many flaws or mistakes you see here, or simply call me an idiot and tell me my idea is stupid. who knows, this post might not even stay up for long.
again, read the disclaimer.
If you are familiar with the Wargame series and have any suggestions, feel free to share! I struggled to come up with any more Asian nations for the OFN, (ironically) the Sphere, and especially the Pakt, at least any nations that would be militarily distinct enough to warrant a place.

Avoided Civil War America: KX brings back the ability to avoid the 2acw, with the progressive, democratic or republican parties. There is also content for the 1940 elections if you avoid the civil war with radical parties changing and the ability to peacefully switch tags to CSA or CAR if you go down their trees.
Mexico: Complete rework, with many paths from Totalist El Jefe and the Mexican Leninist, to Socialist agrarian democracy, to normal democracy and the many different Mexican candidates of Monarchs. Alongside the Synarchist and Integralist factions, and the Aztec aesthetics of Frida Kahlo’s path.
Yucatan: A range of small paths for the different parties following independence, or the neo-mayans.
Second American Civil War Tags: All completely Reworked in KX, with some new additional tags
New England: A very, very vast selection of paths, Between Canadians setting up dominionship or American monarchy, to New Sons of Liberty and Washingtonian democracy, Ecological socialism under Lermond and his successors, or HP lovecraft and his varying politics and successors as well. And that's just the major content, that's not even including the wide range of smaller parties ranging from the many breeds of liberal to fringe groups in New England.
CSA: The Syndicates have had their original parties all completely reworked to better represent their differences and factionalism, but with the major additions to the CSA of the technocrats or Mafia. The technocrats have three different trees based on Burnhamite control, Technocracy Inc, or Utopian Technocracy. While Al Capone can take charge, and has many different successors once he passes.
Federalists: Rework of post civil war choices for Macarthur, with the major different path being a coup by the US navy against the army.
CAR: A new tag to KX with vast selections. The Old Democratic party with influences between young and old guard. While also having the vast influence of the Fordists and different KKK groups being able to usurp control. George Patton and coup the radicals and establish a more moderate democracy, or a political machine under E.H Crump can come to be.
BBR: Another new tag that correlates to the above one, The black belt revolt can rise up against the CAR and will have an entire political spectrum of paths to range. Navigate between the many different black socialist groups, to democratic groups with the Americanist Harlem Hellfighters, or the influences of the UNIA and Nation of Islam on the black belt. KX also added to outliers in the forms of the Black Israelites and Sun Ra.
AUS: Another completely filled tag in america, with a vast range of new opposing parties to Huey Long’s AFP tent party. Try some new parties in the AUS, stick with the AFP and its different factions following huey’s passing, or experience different directions in the form of Pendergast’s political machine, or a Catholic takeover of America, with a vast conquest and following political paths to choose from.
WCC: The western federalists, Survive the onslaught and negotiate with the caesar on how post civil war America should look, or host him if Washington D.C falls.
PSA: Continue to keep hold of American democracy out west with expanded party tree’s for existing democratic choices, or go a unique route. Control the nation with Randolph Hearst, be guided by spirituality and scientology, or be under the Japanese jackboot. Or if you want something more hopeful, choose the visionaries of Walt Disney and Howard Hughes, or save a million of America’s sons with Hap Arnold and George Marshall.
Independent American Tags:
Alaska: Free the true north with a range of socialist, democratic or oligarchic paths for Alaska, complimented by a range of unique puppet cosmetics and mini-paths. But of course, the spotlight is on Native Alaska, with natpop or totalist choices to lead you into conquering the entire new world, joined alongside two puppet tags that also have their own tree’s (wabanaki and the Iroquois)
Texas: The Lone Star goes it alone again! A range of democratic paths to compliment the newly independent nation, or duke it out between socialists, or the Texaco monopoly. And it’s joined by a range of Monarchy choices for Texas, with the house of houston, or foreign options in the form of Windsors, Czechs or Hohenzollerns.
New York City: The Big Apple stands on its own, with a gigantic tree for a small nation. A hotly contested election between 4 famous stars in their own rights, or the continued domination of the Tammany Tiger. Battles for dominance between the NYPD and the Mafia of NYC. Bring faith to the big apple with Christian leagues, or strike it down with the NYC Maximists. And dont forget the influence of Harlem, with the Harlem mob having it’s own tree joined by Black revolutionaries and NYC’s own black nationalists.
Arizona: A unique tag in that it splits off from attempted mexican domination rather than the american wars. Stand with the Man of Golden Water, The Arizona democratic party, the notorious Arizona Rangers, or the socialists of the sunbelt.
Navajo: Going hand in hand with Arizona, the Navajo tribe can be independent with it’s own choice between the chieftain Chee Dodge or the soldiers party of Ira Hayes.

Costa Rica: Monopolize the Coffee Trade for Germany with the ZKG company.

Patagonia: Begin the Wild journey of Fonte’s frontier bandits, and his accompanying friend Posadas, to free South America and the wider world. We also allow the player to naturally get the Patagonian Monarchy.
Africa:
National France: A complete rework of our favorite sand frogs. Experience complete tree’s for every single political path both pre and post liberation of the mainland. Ranging from Marshall Petain’s continued control, to giving power back to the people in democracy, or the radicals of Action Francais under an Orlean claimant and Croix-Des-Fue. Napoleon VI can also rise to power and can be loving to the people, or share power with napoleonic militants.
Liberia: Complete Rework from KX, with differing democratic paths to represent the different factions of the TWP besides tubman, with Poro revolutionaries, the Firestone corporation, and a native monarch bringing differing challenges to the regime. President Hoover can also come here in exile during the civil war and fight to return to America.

Pre-collapse MAF:
Mittel-Afrika: Control the De-facto core of German Africa, and try to centralize your grasp over the overall colony and mandate. Stick with the old guard of the DKG, the upstarts of the NKR, or the loyalists of a very ambitious Goering. There are also the Reform-gruppe, divided into a left and right camp. Make a thriving colony with Right Reformist Lettow-Vorbeck, or give democracy unto africa with elections between Kenyatta and Dualle-Bell with the Left Reformists.
Madagaskar: The naval colony of Mittel-Afrika, be the base of NKR head Reinhard Heydrich. Upon the African collapse, choose between the German Garrison, Israeli Settlers, Native Madagascarans or a return to French rule.

Nyasaland: Cross the border into North Rhodesia and retake the collapsed German lands for the British crown once more.

Congolese Mercs: Fight for profit alone with three different LARPs, a Roman republic style rule under Rosen, French Feudalism under Massu, or the soldiers without borders of the Hallstrom brothers
Leopoldville: Leopoldville’s officers and police have separated themselves from the Force Publique. Choose the reformer option, the stable hand, or the petite tyrant to control leopoldville as it strays from the fighting. Or, join in the beliefs of Kimbangu’s church and bring heaven unto earth.
Union-Miniere: Defend the Belgian mining companies, and fight for your blood diamond profits. Or, alternatively, have the Mwami monarch take over and take back his kingdom in the Congo.
Kivu Clique: Fight as the Askari for your ancestral homes, and choose the leadership in the aftermath of the congo war. But be cautious of the Simba rebels, for they can rise up and bring about socialist revolution to the congo.
Katanga: Rising up after the Kivu clique wins in the Congo, if the left wing Simba’s take over, than Katanga rises up as a province under Moise Tshombe. Defend Capitalism in Katanga with Tshombe, or have his very mercenaries usurp him with Mad Mike Hoare.

Go autocratic with Kornilov, Denikin or the Black Hundredists. Or go further far right with Savinkov, the solidarists or Gorgulov.
Socialist Russia: Rather than tip toeing the line in the republic, fully rise up and switch tags to get more socialist options. 2024.01.01 15:44 eldrscrolls Peter Barclay - I’m Not Your Toy

Peter Barclay - I’m Not Your Toy
I’m currently working on an essay about this gorgeous record. Here are my thoughts regarding the first half. Happy new years!
“The diminutive Peter Barclay was that guy in early ’90s Oakland, the eccentric with the most style, the most talent, the local magician. This self-taught musical wizard recorded at home and produced two barely-released albums, 1990’s dreamlike Acceptance and 1992’s synth pop What Kind Of World, winning over the few who heard them. But fame outside his small circle was not to be, and Barclay was lost in the late-’90s crest of the AIDS epidemic. Rediscovered for a new generation, this is queer music at its finest… Welcome to the world of Peter Barclay.” I've looked all over the internet for traces of information about Peter Barclay, but all I have found is this same promotional blurb. I've checked Discogs, and only three people have copies of Acceptance, and only five people have What Kind Of World. The tracks not featured on the new compilation album, I'm Not Your Toy, seemingly aren't available online anywhere. Luckily, the record comes with a 10-page insert with photos and information about his life written by essayist Khevin LaGrone. Before I move on, I would like to point out that the relationship between the two is never really specified, but one of the songs that appears on this album, O Afrika, is a poem written by Khevin LaGrone that Peter performed to music. When I first got my hands on this record and saw that it came with an insert with information about Peter, I was actually more excited to learn about his life than I was to hear it on vinyl for the first time (I've been streaming it nonstop for a couple of weeks). Khevin says that Peter was born in 1958 in London, but his family shortly moved to Orlando, Florida, where he was raised in a very conservative and religious home and environment. From a young age he was very interested in music (participating in the church choir and the school band) and even taught himself to both make his own instruments and play them. Khevin goes on to say that in 1983, Peter called his brother, Bob, and came out of the closet to him, and moved to San Francisco shortly afterward. He later visited his Father in Orlando to come out of the closet to him as well, which resulted in his father being torn between loving his son and remaining faithful to his religious beliefs. As a gay man, it's hard to put into words the internal conflict one experiences when making the decision to come out to family or friends. When I was in high school I came out to my best friend, Kyle, when we were riding the bus. I got on the bus with no intention to do so, but at some point he told me that people at school were talking about me behind my back, claiming that I was bisexual or gay. Like tearing a band-aid off, I just blurted out “I am!” and he just replied, “Oh.” I never imagined it happening like that, and I also never imagined that he would be so accepting of it. We grew up right next to each other and had sleepovers almost every weekend; I was terrified that I was going to lose my best friend, but it turned out he was just trying to protect me. We got off the bus and went to class without the world ending. The cruelly ironic thing about being queer is, it's often obvious to everyone but yourself, and once you find out that you're queer you feel compelled to guard it vehemently. Once you let one person in on the secret, though, you have to come out to everyone else or you're just waiting for the other shoe to drop; It's that pressure that amps up the anxiety and makes you feel like you have no control over your own life. I have a sister who was in high school at the same time as me (we even had one class together), and I was terrified that word would get around to her and eventually back around to my parents (my mother worked at my school as well), so the second phase of coming out had to happen quickly. When I finally got the courage to come out to my parents, I was expecting my mother to immediately accept it and my father to be upset. My father was a police officer for 30 or so years, and I remembered a few conversations we had in the past about homosexuals being arrested in public parks for hooking up, so I was absolutely terrified for him to find out. In a moment of absolute bewilderment, my father silently accepted it, and my mother pushed back, hard. The whiplash you experience when things go the exact opposite way of the mock-up you've rehearsed in your head for weeks makes it difficult to keep your resolve in a confrontation. As an adult, I now understand that my father bringing up anecdotal stories about homosexuals getting arrested for public sex was almost certainly his gentle attempt at coaxing me out of the closet to a place where he could teach me to be safe, but to the teenage me it seemed arbitrary and foreboding. The next several years were filled with arguments with my mother and me crying by myself on an almost nightly basis. With the stress at college and the stress at home, I felt like I had nowhere to go to just be myself. In this turmoil, I turned to an LGBTQ+ group at my college that was essentially group therapy. I thought it would be an excellent way for me to meet some queer peers; Unfortunately, acceptance isn't a given in the gay community like people (including teenage me) naively believe. Because I'm attracted to older men, I experienced more hatred and discrimination from other gay people than I ever experienced from heterosexuals. Most straight people don't give a fuck about your personal life because they're too busy trying to make enough money to pay their mortgage and feed their family, but it's the queer people in your social group that are domineering and manipulative. My queer classmates told me things like “if [I was] more attractive, [I] could date someone [my] own age.” It seems like the gay experience is full of these whiplash moments when you expect one thing and get the polar opposite. It's this topic that Peter meditates on as his album gently fades in with the track Acceptance Is The Key. You're immediately immersed in Barclay's soothing sonic world of bedroom synth-pop and unbelievably smooth falsetto vocals. In what feels like a very contemporary choice, the track jumps straight into the chorus with the lines “acceptance is the key. Acceptance of you and me. Acceptance of who you are. Acceptance will take you far.” The instrumental accompaniment feels like the musical equivalent of a dreamy, warm hug. Peter goes on to say “We're as different as day and night and yet were still the same. There's no wrong and no right, there's no one here to blame. We've tried all our lives to be the best we can. If you need help with your strife I'll lend you a helping hand.” I'd like to point out here that I'm doing my best to present the lyrics as accurately as possible, as the record does not come with a lyric sheet. One might interpret these lyrics to be a plea to the world as a whole to be more accepting, or possibly heterosexual people accepting queers, but it's my opinion that he's specifically addressing fellow homosexuals and reminding them to love and accept their peers. I'm sure that it's an amalgamation of all of these things and more, but Peter grew up experiencing intense racism both in and outside of the gay community. Black men are fetishized within the gay community, probably even more so in the 80s (I probably wouldn't be alive typing this today if I were around to experience them firsthand as an adult), but to this day I frequently hear qualifications like “he's pretty attractive for a black guy.” There's even a bar here in Cincinnati called Tillie's where I heard an anecdotal story about an argument between a white DJ and a black patron concerning the DJ not wanting to play the song This Is America by Childish Gambino, which resulted in black people leaving the bar en masse. It would be easy to cast off these simple and repetitive lyrics as corny, like the unabashedly whimsical track You're My Best Friend by Queen, but repetitions of “acceptance is the key” and the droning drum beat is exactly what queer people searching for acceptance need. There isn't any whiplash moment in this song that catches the listener off guard; it's just five minutes of a self-taught musician vibing in his homemade studio and imagining a happier world. Khevin goes on to say that once Peter moved to San Francisco, he quickly celebrated his sexuality at pride events, gay bars, and sex clubs. There's an interesting anecdote about Peter getting off a plane and greeting his sister, Ouida. “At the gate, she watched others in the crowd of people step aside as Peter passed them as if he were a celebrity. He wore a tank top, tight jeans, and boots, with a leather jacket tossed dramatically over his shoulder. He carried a suitcase customized with faux leopard fur. He walked towards Ouida with his head up and shoulders back as if walking down a catwalk.” It seems like an innocuous enough observation that people were moving aside because they thought he was a celebrity, but this is during the height of the AIDS epidemic which was responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people in the US alone. Peter dressed and acted like a diva, so everyone around him knew he was gay, and during the 80's that was a surefire way to get people to steer clear of you. Despite current attempts to re-write history, the Reagan administration treated the AIDS epidemic as a joke while it killed thousands of people; his press secretary, Larry Speakes, infamously cracked gay jokes during a press conference, including “I don't have it, do you?” complete with laughter. I wasn't at the airport that day watching Peter glide down his runway; however, I can't help but project my own skepticism. It's this yearning for the spotlight regardless of whether it's good or bad attention that dominates the next track, Love It In The Sun, which continues Barclay's signature ethereal sound. It opens with masterful scatting where he soars to beautiful heights and dips down to his sultry and seldom-heard chest voice for a brief but resoundingly effective moment. After the gorgeous intro, a sun-drenched and bouncy, vaguely tango-like beat takes over, as Peter croons “The sun is hot on my skin it feels good. A warm wind blows across the land. The flowers open, love to catch the sun's rays. I'd love to feel the warmth in my hands. I love it in the sun. I love it in the sun.” It sounds and feels a bit like 50's or 60's lounge music like Can't Take My Eyes Of Off You by Andy Williams but slightly sped up, especially with his vocalizations in the background that carry the song forward and double as percussion. The chorus is just two short repetitions of “I love it in the sun.” He continues over two more verses “When I wake up in the morning I greet the sunshine. To me, it's a very welcome sight. The sun warms the earth and lets things grow. I'd love to go out and bask in the light. Sometimes when the sun shines on the ocean, the ocean glitters like gold. In the evening the sun kisses the sea as she says 'good night.' It warms my heart and soothes my soul. I love it in the sun.” The layered finger snaps groovily reverberate, and the Michael Jackson-esque vocal improvisations and cracks in his vocals (such as his delivery of the word “gold”) are stunning. The most obvious interpretation to me is that the song is a metaphorical take on his personal transformation from closeted homosexual in Orlando to loud and proud diva in San Francisco, and on a much larger scale, the momentum of the civil rights movement as it applies to queer and black people alike. In that way, it feels like the chamomile-dipped spiritual sister to Beyonce's Cozy, as it has none of the threats (“might I suggest you don't fuck with my sis, 'cause she comfortable”) or braggadocio (“they hate me because they want me” and “I'm swaggy effortlessly”) and but one diva moment in the outro where I can imagine him blowing a kiss to the crowd; however, it still shares the same motivational message of overcoming hatred and loving what makes you, you (“you survived all you been through, confident, damn you lethal” and “that's how God made me”), as well as celebrating black excellence (“I'm dark brown, dark skin, light skin, beige, fluorescent beige, bitch, I'm black”) albeit it in a much less direct, symbolic way. Most importantly, I Love It In The Sun is a coming-out song, like Garden Shed by Tyler, the Creator, but a coming-out song with a cool confidence; he's not asking for your acceptance anymore, he's taking it. After making the move to San Francisco and experiencing sexual and spiritual liberty for the first time, Peter got a regular gig at a local jazz club. According to Kheven, the club owner insisted that Peter was “too gay” and that he needed a heterosexual collaborator, Richard Howell. The two hit it off and formed a lifelong friendship, as well as a duo called Barclay and Howell, which was later joined by percussionist James Henry. They experienced a moderate amount of success playing at the club and private gigs; however, Peter had to make a move to Oakland to escape an abusive relationship (this matter is not elaborated on) which resulted in the separation of Barclay and Howell. It was at this point that he created his own studio, Suite Adeline Studios, and started his solo career in earnest with his debut, Acceptance. The songs Acceptance Is The Key, Love It In The Sun, You Are Loved, and Echo Lake all appear on this album which was released on cassette only, and distributed personally by Peter. In an attempt to avoid the traditional path in the music industry, Peter insisted on doing everything himself, and according to Khevin, this meant distributing the cassette in local malls and by mail (much like the bedroom pop icon R. Stevie Moore). As previously mentioned, I cannot find Power Greater Than Me, Sincerity, Sometime, Classy Coupe de Ville, You’re Not Bad, or Moonlite (the remaining tracks) anywhere. The album credits only list Kheven LaGrone (lyrics) and James Henery [sic] (percussion) on the track O Afrika, meaning Peter wrote, performed, mixed, and mastered the album himself. The level of confidence it takes to teach yourself how to play multiple instruments (this includes “tuba, trumpet, keyboard, and drums”), move away from your family to a new, strange environment, write, mix, master, and distribute your own album, and deal with the adversity of being black and gay in the 80s is both staggering and incomprehensible to me. Peter Barclay released Acceptance in 1990; to put this into perspective, the infamous Rodney King beating that took place in Peter’s new home state happened in 1991, and the World Health Organization didn’t declassify homosexuality as a mental illness until 1992. Skipping forward to something more contemporary, just 8 years ago in 2015, jazz musician Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, and before performing his song K.K.P.D. he put it into context by recalling a time when he was leaving a gig and got pulled over. “Next thing I know, my car is surrounded, the lead officer is out of the car, he’s got the gun pointed to the back of my head and he’s telling me to get out of the car and take my clothes off and lay on the ground. So, I hadn’t done anything wrong, so I asked him, you know, why he was pulling over, why he was stopping me, and the guy told me to shut up, and that he was my boss, and he was the authority, and I was supposed to do as I was told,” explained Christian. He went on to say that the song was “ actually first met with a lot of contempt from a lot of people in this particular culture,” referring to fellow jazz musicians. This is a full 25 years after Peter Barclay released Acceptance. It’s this contempt that Barclay received from white gays, black gays, musicians, club owners, and the public at large that would beat down even the most strong-willed person. Barclay meditates on this with the track You Are Loved, a song that heads into a new direction by opening with a calming field recording of birds chirping. “See the birds singing in the tree. I will sing for you sweet songs of praise anew,” sings Peter over a calming new-age mixture of synth and keyboard. He continues, “See the water rush to the river. Down the river to the sea. Feel the love rush through you like a warm breeze.” As Peter delivers this line, a field recording of a gentle stream slowly builds until the word “breeze” when it fades out and the chorus starts. The chorus is just two simple repetitions of “you are loved.” The second verse immediately picks up with “You are not forgotten. You are not the same. You are not forsaken or blamed. This world seems so unkind. This world seems so cruel. You’re like a tender, little flower in front of the school.” It’s with this last line that one can determine that this song is both a meditation on self-worth/care, but also religion, as the line “little flower in front of the school” is likely a double entendre referring to his experience dealing with racism and homophobia as a child in school, but also Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, otherwise known as Little Flower of Jesus. With this realization, it’s possible to now interpret the song in a couple of different ways. The most straightforward examination of the lyrics would lead the audience to conclude that Peter Barclay is the narrator and that he is either reminding himself that he is loved in a time of vulnerability, or he is sharing his wisdom with another person, possibly a homosexual. However, because of the second verse, it’s possible to interpret the lyrics as portraying Jesus as the narrator, reminding Peter that, despite how cruel the world has been to him thus far, God still loves and accepts him. It’s the religious dual nature of this song that interests me so much because religion had a major role in ostracizing him from his father and society. In this song, Peter is taking control of the religious narrative that homosexuality is a sin and flipping it, definitively stating from God himself that he loves everyone, even if they’re different. The line “you are not the same” in particular resonates with me, because much like Peter Barclay was an outcast in the gay community due to his blackness, Christian Scott was an outcast in the jazz community due to his aggression, and Tyler Okonma (Tyler, the Creator) was an outcast in the hip-hop community due to his queerness, I have always felt like an outcast within the queer community because I’m not the same. This longing to be part of a community, but realizing that the community doesn’t accept you for who you are, is a universal experience of the human condition. In this way, anyone listening to the song can relate to it, regardless of race or sexual orientation. The line just before it, “you are not forgotten” is particularly heartwarming considering Peter existed and died in relative obscurity, but I’m still here today, discovering and loving his music, confirming that he isn’t forgotten. Concerning the actual music in the song, the intro has this haunting chord with chromatic notes that creates so much tension, and it sustains for a solid minute. It’s not unlike the tension John Carpenter creates with the descending synth tones that pervade the track Better Check The Kids on the Halloween OST. This was undoubtedly influenced by his experience performing with his church, as pedal point (sustaining a note for an extended period, or frequently repeating a note) is commonly used in gospel music. The chord morphs slightly throughout the song, but aside from incredibly brief moments in the choruses, it’s sustained throughout the whole song. It feels like it’s meant to represent God’s love, or God himself always being there. After the second chorus (which curiously adds two extra repetitions of “you are loved,” almost as if the person the song is directed towards has a growing need for affirmation), beautiful flute-like synth tones wash over you (which contributes heavily to the overall new-age feel to the song), and the bird field recordings reemerge. The song then winds down as Peter repeatedly sings “you are loved” at one point allowing his voice to spiral down just before delivering the line again, this time soaring upwards, and the song finally ends with the birds chirping as it fades out. The duality of the narrator is mirrored by the duality of the instrumentals because while it’s the most beautiful and comforting song so far, it’s also the most melancholy. There’s something so disconcerting about the reverberating notes and the unrelenting delivery of the chorus at the end, almost as if it represents someone spiraling out of control regardless of the wisdom being imparted upon them. The vocals have this dire timbre that’s reminiscent of George Michael in the song Jesus to a Child, or Blood Orange in the song Holy Will, which instantly clues you in on the urgency of the song, as it feels like it’s a matter of life or death; the protagonist could very well kill themselves if the message doesn’t make it through to them. Just after the album's most crucial point, the next track, Echo Lake, melts the tension away and suspends you in absolute musical catharsis as Peter reaches an epiphany scored by eloquent keyboard notes and a simple looping drum machine beat. In a rare moment that is so overwhelmingly beautiful that it can’t be paired with lyrics, Peter improvises graceful, echoed vocalizations that remind me of the “ch-ch-ch, ha-ha-ha’s” of Overlay of Evil/Main Title from the Friday the 13th OST, or more appropriately, Alan Vega on his more serene tracks like Cheree. Strangely enough, the chime tones that come in at 1:11 on Cheree mirror the soothing bell/chime noises at the beginning of Echo Lake. In a way, the soothing chimes hearken back to the line “Feel the love rush through you like a warm breeze” in the previous song; as a listener, you’re left to imagine wind chimes gently blowing in the wind, symbolically representing the acceptance that you are not only worth loving, but you are loved. It’s such a minor detail, yet it adds so much texture and beauty to the track. As the listener, we get to vicariously experience the love rushing through Peter, and it’s legitimately one of my favorite moments in all of music because, while I haven’t quite reached that point of self-actualization, I get to experience what it’d be like for 6 minutes and 41 seconds.
With the conclusion of the first half of this record, and my favorite song, the album continues with the tracks What Kind Of World, Believe In Yourself, Second Class Citizen, O Afrika, and One Day, all of which come from Peter’s second solo album, What Kind of World.

Season 6: 1997 - 2005
EPISODE 5

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip Celebrate Their Golden Wedding Anniversary

Nov. 20, 1997: Soon after the death of his mother, Princess Diana, William returns to boarding school, keen to get back to some form of normalcy. But there’s not much chance of a quiet life with girls around the country and beyond becoming increasingly infatuated with the teenage prince. A frenzied era dubbed “Willsmania” kicks off. Back at the palace, the queen and Philip are celebrating 50 years of marriage with a commemorative event that includes an official photo at Buckingham Palace, a thanksgiving service at Westminster Abbey, and lunch at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich. On arrival at the Royal Naval College, William is treated like a pop star as the crowds go crazy.

Charles, William, and Harry Hit the Slopes

March 1998: Even on the other side of the Atlantic, William can’t escape the manic public attention when he, Harry, and Charles jet off on holiday to western Canada. After making some official appearances and visits in Vancouver, the family retires to a ski resort in Whistler for a more relaxed few days. Wills is unhappy to have to pose for a press photo call on the slopes too and makes it clear to his father he hates all attention.
EPISODE 6

NATO Allies Launch an Offensive Against Serb Military Targets

March 24, 1999: In response to human rights abuses that are being perpetrated against the ethnic Albanian population in Kosovo, NATO forces initiate an air war against Serbia. Tony Blair — whose popularity has been on the rise since Diana’s death — is one of the strongest proponents of the offensive, emphasizing the humanitarian necessity of intervention. The bombing lasts 78 days, ending on 10 June after the Yugoslav government agrees to withdraw. Blair’s actions give Britain increased authority on the world stage, and his popularity levels at home soar. At the 2001 general election, Labour is reelected in a landslide victory.
EPISODE 7

Prince William Turns 18 Years Old

June 21, 2000: Soon after his birthday, William sits his A-level exams at Eton, earning an A in geography, a B in history of art, and a C in biology. He applies to the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and is accepted to study history of art but decides to take a gap year before continuing his studies. He spends most of August 2000 to June 2001 abroad, volunteering with a Raleigh International expedition in Chile and traveling around Africa, among other places.

William Starts His Degree at the University of St. Andrews and Meets a Girl Named Kate

September 2001: Starting at uni is a crazy time for anyone, but even more so if you’re a royal. William receives a lot of attention as he arrives on campus, but he meets a fellow student by the name of Kate Middleton who’s also studying art history. They share lecture notes and get to know one another, but both date other people initially. It’s still an overwhelming time for William, and by Christmas he’s contemplating whether he should continue at St. Andrews. Ultimately, he decides to persevere with his classes but switches to studying geography.
EPISODE 8

Princess Margaret Dies at Age 71

Feb. 9, 2002: Between February 1998 and March 2001, Margaret suffers multiple strokes. The first is reasonably mild and occurs when she’s on vacation in Mustique in 1998. After a short stay in a hospital in Barbados, she flies home two days later for further tests, rest, and rehab. Margaret makes some lifestyle changes and a slow recovery. A year later, the princess is back in Mustique and having a bath when she scalds her feet in hot water. Unable to walk due to her burnt soles, she returns to the UK in a wheelchair. Despite enjoying a glitzy 70th birthday party at the Ritz in October 2000, her recovery is short-lived. The princess endures a second confirmed stroke in January 2001 and then a third in March 2001. Margaret’s fourth and final stroke takes place two days before her death on Feb. 9, 2002. She’s the first senior royal to be cremated since the Middle Ages, making that choice because there wasn’t enough space for a coffin, and this meant she could be buried alongside her father (and her mother and sister in the future).
Royal Bulletin: Elizabeth and Margaret really did have an end-of-war night out. More than 50 years before Margot’s big birthday bash at the Ritz, a 19-year-old Elizabeth and a 15-year-old Margaret attended the same venue for a night of dancing to celebrate the end of the war on VE Day in 1945.
EPISODE 9

Kate Turns Heads During a Charity Fashion Show

March 27, 2002: During a nonprofit event at St. Andrew’s University, Kate dons a sheer slip dress designed by a fellow student and struts her stuff on the catwalk, making quite the impression on a smitten William. Romance begins to blossom between the pair, and five months later the prince moves into a house on Hope Street with three other roommates — one of whom is Kate.

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Dies

March 30, 2002: At the impressive age of 101, the queen mother dies peacefully in her sleep at Royal Lodge, Windsor. Her death sets Operation Tay Bridge in motion, a plan detailing procedures pertaining to her funeral, which takes place at Westminster Abbey on April 9.

The Queen Celebrates Her Golden Jubilee

June 1–4, 2002: Elizabeth enjoys a weekend of jubilee celebrations, marking 50 years on the throne. On the final day of festivities, the queen travels in the ornate Gold State Coach from Buckingham Palace to St. Paul’s for a jubilee service, followed by a Guildhall luncheon, during which Blair tells her, “Deference may be inherited but affection is earned, and the affection this country feels for you is real.” After lunch, the royal family wave to the crowds from the palace balcony, with William joining the family for the photo op — much to the adoring crowd’s pleasure.

Operation Paget Is Launched

Jan. 6, 2004: A police inquiry is launched into the cause of Princess Diana and Dodi’s deaths. As part of the investigation, Charles is questioned at Clarence House for several hours about events leading up to his ex-wife’s death. The results are published in 2006 and include the findings that Diana was not pregnant at the time of her death and that the driver, Henri Paul, was more than twice over the legal drink-drive limit. The inquiry finds that the British establishment is not responsible for the deaths of Diana and Dodi. Mohamed al-Fayed calls the royals a “dracula family” in the press.
EPISODE 10

Prince Harry Makes a Major Faux Pas

Jan. 7, 2005: Prince Harry and Prince William attend a “native and colonial” themed costume party to which Harry decides to dress in an Afrika Korps costume with a swastika armband. Of course, a partygoer snaps a pic of the prince on his phone, and soon images of Prince Harry wearing a swastika on his arm are slapped across the front pages of the papers, causing major embarrassment for the royals two weeks before Holocaust Memorial Day. Clarence House issues an apology on behalf of the 20-year-old prince, saying: “I am very sorry if I have caused any offense or embarrassment to anyone. It was a poor choice of costume.” As punishment, Harry is sent to Home Farm to muck out pigs for the rest of the month.

Charles and Camilla Marry at the Windsor Guildhall

After Charles asks for the queen’s blessing to marry Camilla, Elizabeth meets with the Lord Bishops, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Bishop of Salisbury to seek advice. She grants Charles his wish to wed, and, decades later than he would’ve hoped, it’s royal wedding bells once more for Charles! The longtime lovers marry in a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall. Though the queen doesn’t attend the ceremony, she does go to the church blessing that follows at St. George’s Chapel and hosts the buffet reception at Windsor Castle’s State Apartments. Elizabeth even makes a toast to the newlyweds, joking that announcing the winner of the Grand National is actually the important news of the day. Winners all round.
On Set: Filming Charles and Camilla’s wedding required the most cast present on set of any day of the entire production. Twenty cast members were there for one scene, alongside 450 supporting artists.

2023.12.20 14:14 Muscle_Dude_Kyle Playful Stereotypes for each faction.

This is just a playful poke at faction mains.
Great Britain - You’re from the United Kingdom as no one else in the right mind would play this faction, you swear that they are amazing regardless of the facts even if this means you basically pump out Crusaders. You are a unique breed who typically is laid back but at the end of a game you are throwing the biggest tantrum you possibly can about how this game is bs, but when you get that big win you sit there with a triumphant smile upon your face and hail the bruvs.
Wehrmacht - You are fully aware that this faction is arguably the most versatile faction in the game being capable of achieving the impossible but forget that hard work, you enjoy having a good old fashioned drink while sitting in your bunkers and blasting Rammstein while wave upon wave are cut down by your defensive wall. MG 42’s go burr, wars are won through attrition after all 😉
United States - You enjoy World War Two movies like Saving Private Ryan and always pick the US because forget playing the Bruvs or the Losers we only take the US because Murica fuck yeah! You love relying upon the Rangers and whatever is the hot topic at the time of the season. If we were being honest you play the game similarly to how the Soviets are used, as expendable meat shields to overwhelm a position believing this is skill.
Afrika Korps - There is a reservation just for you in Hell with the amount of war crimes you commit in game, you enjoy the experience of playing the strongest faction at the current time but with always laugh at the notion of “balance” and “skill” who cares when you win right?
