Case 28 Wumenguan

Long Have We Heard of Longtan

Once when Deshan was getting instruction from Longtan, he stayed on into the night. Longtan said, "It's late-why don't you go?" Deshan said goodbye and lifted up the curtain [to go]. He saw it was dark out, so he turned back [to Longtan] and said, "It's dark outside."
Longtan then lit a candle and handed it to Deshan. As Deshan was about to take it, Longtan blew the candle out. At this Deshan suddenly had an insight. Then he bowed to Longtan. Longtan said, "What truth have you seen?"
Deshan said, "From this day forward I shall no longer doubt the tongues of all the world's en- lightened teachers."

What are you trying to do, Mr. Mazu?

Huai-jang visited Mazu in his cell, asking, “In practicing sitting-in-meditation, what does Your Reverence aspire to attain?” “To attain Buddhahood!” was the answer. Huai-jang then took up a piece of brick and began to grind it against a rock in front of Ma-tsu’s cell. After some moments Ma-tsu became curious and asked, “What are you grinding it for?” “I want to grind it into a mirror,” Huai-jang replied.
Greatly amused, Ma-tsu said, “How can you hope to grind a piece of brick into a mirror?” Huai-jang fired back, “Since a piece of brick cannot be ground into a mirror, how then can you sit yourself into a Buddha?” “What must I do then?” Matsu inquired. Huai-jang replied, “Take the case of an ox-cart. If the cart does not move, do you whip the cart, or do you whip the ox?” Ma-tsu remained silent.
“In learning sitting-in-meditation,” Hui-jang resumed, “do you aspire to learn the sitting Ch’an, or do you aspire to imitate the sitting Buddha? If the former, Ch’an does not consist in sitting or in lying down. If the latter, the Buddha has no fixed postures. The Dharma goes on forever, and never abides in anything. You must not therefore be attached to nor abandon, any particular phase of it. To sit yourself into Buddha is to kill the Buddha. To be attached to the sitting posture is to fail to comprehend the essential principle.”

What do you get from "practice"?

Just some general questions, can you answer honestly?
  1. What do you intend to get from Zen study/practice?
  2. Who do you know who has gotten whatever it is themselves?
  3. What text describes a similar accomplishment?
  4. What authority tests and certifies that attainment?

.

Welcome! ewk comment: Deshan became trusting of the people he didn't trust. Mazu lost his belief in meditation. These are concrete results.
Often, people come in here and they struggle with "reading books" or "high school book reports", they struggle with being confronted, struggle with the lay precepts, struggle with embodying what they believe to be kind, tolerant behavior.
How can they claim to have a practice that produces those things if they can't even do those things online?
There are about 100 people who come to this forum regularly every week IN THE WHOLE WORLD.
What do they come here for?

EXPLORATION
  • Juanicipio:
    • Infill drilling at Juanicipio continued in Q1 2024 from underground aimed at upgrading mineralization in areas expected to be mined in the near to mid-term. During Q1 2024, 11,271 metres were drilled from underground.
    • Surface drilling focused on expanding and upgrading the deeper zones and broader regional exploration started in April 2024.
    • During 2024, Juanicipio plans to drill a total of 50,000 metres, with 33,000 metres from underground and 17,000 metres from surface.
  • Deer Trail Project, Utah:
    • On May 29, 2023 MAG started a Phase 3 drilling program focused on up to three porphyry “hub” target areas thought to be the source of the manto, skarn, epithermal mineralization and extensive alteration throughout the project area including that at the Deer Trail and Carissa zones. In late 2023 an early onset of winter snowfall impacted the commencement of the third porphyry “hub” target, which is now expected to be drilled in 2024. The two completed “hub” holes to date total 2,738 metres. Both holes intercepted alteration and mineralization in line with what is expected on the edges of porphyry systems. Follow-up drill targets are planned for summer 2024.
    • With the early onset of snowfall, Phase 4 drilling focussed on lower elevations commenced in the last quarter of 2023 and continued through Q1 2024, aimed at offsetting the Carissa discovery and testing other high-potential targets in the Deer Trail mine area. During Q1 2024, 1,208 metres were drilled at Carissa with results pending.
  • Larder Project, Ontario:
    • Drilling targeting Cheminis and Bear totalled 5,391 metres in Q1 2024. Targets tested include down plunge extension of the high-grade double knuckle at the Bear East zone and extending the Cheminis south mine sequence down plunge.
    • Cheminis Update: Follow-up drilling of the Cheminis South Cadillac-Larder Break (“CLD”) mine sequence down plunge is planned to test below the most recent intercepts. Hole GAT-24-026 intersected a new zone on the north side of the CLB within a fuchsite-silica-albite altered komatiite grading 3.9 g/t gold over 16 metres with 2 higher grade shoots associated with albite dykes (see Table 1 below).
    • Bear Update: Utilizing the updated model and incorporating the updated data from recent drilling, the Bear East zone was successfully extended down plunge by up to 1,100 metres depth. Hole GAT-24-024NB intersected gold mineralization on both sides of the CLB which confirms the presence of either another structural trap at depth or the continuation of the “double knuckle” zone at surface. Gold mineralization intersected on the north zone included 9.4 g/t gold over 2.2 metres within a strongly altered komatiite with syenite intrusions and 1.6 g/t gold over 4.2 metres on the south zone within the south iron-rich volcanics (see Table 1 below). Bear East remains open in all directions.

https://preview.redd.it/9txq8snzze0d1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=0089cf57573e8834bdb641cf9e055619e6f6c5b2
(1) Equivalent silver head grades have been calculated using the following price assumptions to translate gold, lead and zinc to “equivalent” silver head grade: $23/oz silver, $1,950/oz gold, $0.95/lb lead and $1.15/lb zinc (Q1 2023: $21.85/oz silver, $1,775/oz gold, $0.915/lb lead and $1.30/lb zinc).
(2) Equivalent silver payable ounces have been calculated using realized price assumptions to translate gold, lead and zinc to “equivalent” silver payable ounces (metal quantity, multiplied by metal price, divided by silver price). Q1 2024 realized prices of $23.73/oz silver, $2,112.27/oz gold, $0.92/lb lead and $1.08/lb zinc (Q1 2023 realized prices of $22.93/oz silver, $1,959.50/oz gold, $0.94/lb lead and $1.43/lb zinc).
During the three months ended March 31, 2024 a total of 325,081 tonnes of ore were mined. This represents an increase of 45% over Q1 2023. Increases in mined tonnages at Juanicipio have been driven by the operational ramp up of the mine towards steady state targets.
During the three months ended March 31, 2024 a total of 325,683 tonnes of ore were processed through the Juanicipio plant; no ore was processed at the nearby Fresnillo and Saucito processing plants (100% owned by Fresnillo). This represents an increase of 47% over Q1 2023. The increase in milled tonnage has been driven by the Juanicipio mill commissioning and operational ramp up to nameplate capacity over the course of 2023.
The silver head grade and equivalent silver head grade for the ore processed in the three months ended March 31, 2024 was 476 g/t and 713 g/t, respectively (three months ended March 31, 2023: 363 g/t and 530 g/t, respectively). Head grades in Q1 2023 were lower as low-grade commissioning stockpiles were processed through the Juanicipio plant. Silver metallurgical recovery during Q1 2024 was 89.1% (Q1 2023: 87.0%) reflecting ongoing optimizations in the processing plant.
The following table provides a summary of the total cash costs 5 and all-in sustaining costs 5 (“AISC”) of Juanicipio for the three months ended March 31, 2024, and 2023.

Financial Results
The following table presents excerpts of the financial results of Juanicipio for the three months ended March 31, 2024 and 2023.
https://preview.redd.it/4zym5dqzze0d1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=d25c91cabc7f6c6b35ff61acacc0160f3dfac2e7
Sales increased by $72,207 during the three months ended March 31, 2024, mainly due to 179% higher metal volumes and 2% higher realized metal prices.
Offsetting higher sales was higher production cost ($9,409) which was driven by higher sales and operational ramp-up in mining and processing, including $3,545 in inventory movements, and higher depreciation ($14,083) as the Juanicipio mill achieved commercial production and commenced depreciating the processing facility and associated equipment in June 2023. Operating margin increased by 21% to 52%, mainly due to operational leverage and the lower reliance on the nearby Fresnillo and Saucito processing facilities.
Other expenses increased by $2,159 mainly as a result of higher extraordinary mining and other duties ($872) in relation to higher precious metal revenues from the sale of concentrates and higher consulting and administrative expenses ($2,690) as an operator services agreement became effective upon initiation of commercial production (the “Operator Services Agreement”), offset by lower exchange losses and other costs ($1,566).
Taxes increased by $20,980 impacted by higher taxable profits generated during Q1 2024, and non-cash deferred tax credits related to the commencement of use of plant and equipment in Q1 2023.

2024.05.14 17:58 Max_Vision How to evaluate and choose a speaker cabinet for my amps?

I've been playing for a long time, off and on. I'm at the point where I'm tweaking the gear that I have to make it as good as it gets, and then getting rid of the gear that I don't love.
I'm pretty good on my actual guitars at the moment, but I'm having issues with my amps. I have a few tube amps that are mostly too loud (50-60W), and one very tiny (0.5W) tube amp (Zvex Nano) that I'll probably never get rid of. I like the heads I have, but I'm not sure that I love them. I'd like to test them out at their best, though a good/great speaker cabinet.
I currently have a Carvin 2x12 (half open back) with the Carvin-branded speakers. It's fine, but I bought it a long time ago when it was good enough for my budget, not because it was exactly what I wanted. I can't help but wonder if I'd be better off with a closed back cab, or different speakers, or something else that I'm not thinking of.
How should I go about trying out or choosing a speaker cabinet? I can afford to buy what I really want, but I'm not sure how to evaluate that.
What criteria do you use to choose speakers or a cabinet? How do you test them out before you buy them? Any 2x12 (or maybe 1x12?) cabinets or speakers I should check out?
The logistics of bringing my head and guitar to the shop to try out cabinets seems insane, especially when the room can affect the sound so much. I don't even know where to start, unless I just pick one that has a good name on it (this might be the best answer; I don't know).
The actual amps I have are a non-master volume Sovtek Mig 50 and a Genz-Benz El Diablo. I don't know if I will keep them, but I haven't found anything better just yet. I'm leaning towards swapping one of those out for a Katana 100 head just for the convenience factor, but that doesn't answer the question about the cabinet.
My music is all over the place, from 60's rock through grunge to modern metal, with some indie and ska and various eras of pop in there as well. My guitar teacher is pretty good about pushing my boundaries, though we haven't gotten into country at all.

2024.05.14 17:57 PuddingConscious Can I get a second opinion on this quote, and whether the reverse osmosis system is necessary?

Hey all. I have a private well. I had a company come test it today and recommend me a system.
They said the system would require a water softener and a UV system. They said the softener would remove iron and manganese as well.
They strongly recommended a reverse osmosis system as well, to reduce the TDS, however that is a $2k addon. Can anyone give me a second opinion?

2024.05.14 17:57 scrubmax Ghosted by driving instructor.. what next?

Hi all, I am looking for some advice. I will try to keep this post as objective as possible, to hope to receive guidance regarding the situation I am in.
Timeline:
2022~2023: wanted to learn driving, went to Ubi Driving Centre, passed BTT test, however did not follow up for lessons due to personal reasons.
Mar 2024: Decided to continue learning. Searched around and went for private instructor under PassFast. Due to my previous account expiring, I decided to purchase CDC account under them as well, in order to facilitate a quicker booking slot for learning.
7 Apr 2024: First lesson conducted, by private driving instructor. For subsequent lessons, instructor mentioned to make payment for the lesson in advance. (my friend mentioned that i should find a instructor that allows me to only pay when lesson is conducted, not sure if that's the norm?)
21 Apr 2024: Went for second lesson. Tried to learn as much as possible, sometimes instructor was watching Tiktok or texting but tried to close one eye.
8 May 2024: 3rd lesson supposed to be conducted, however I had literally forgot about it (yes it's on me, no excuses I know.) When i remembered, I immediately texted him, however was met with a blue tick. Tried to give the benefit of the doubt and waited until the weekend, no response.
Over the weekend, discussed with my friend and he mentioned to find a different driving instructor.
13 May 2024: texted the Passfast Person in charge, he mentioned: "You will be getting a fixed instructor throughout. This is to ensure a consistent learning experience", and also mentioned that this instructor is the only one who is available to teach on peak period.
After that message, I decided to bite the bullet, and texted the instructor again, may I know when the next available lesson will be. Again, met with a blue tick.

I understand that it was 100% my fault for missing out on the lesson on 8 May, however he did not return any message or so much as a simple call to check if I was coming on the day itself. Am I allowed to find a different PDI under a different company? What are the next steps for me here? I am only two lessons in thus far. TIA

2024.05.14 17:55 BlinkSpectre My ex GF messed me up mentally and emotionally and I’m still trying to recover

This isn’t something I would normally post but I am hoping it’ll be cathartic for me. This might be a long one and a bit of a mess so feel free to skip if you’re not interested in the read.
I 28f up until last August I was in a relationship with who we’ll call ‘M’ 24f for almost 2 years. We met on hinge. In general I’m very shy and not very confident person, and definitely new to dating as I spent most of my teens and early 20’s in the closet due to internalized homophobia. So I don’t have much experience dating. That context is important for the story. By all accounts, M was probably out of my league, (that’s what I told myself, again I have zero self confidence ) she was attractive, smart, came from a good family and on the surface a nice girl. The beginning the relationship was fine, she was in uni for medicine and her school schedule was pretty demanding. We’d only see each other maybe one every month in the beginning of the relationship, I understood she was busy with school and honestly I was still feeling lucky that she chose me to date.
A few months go by and we still remain only seeing each other once a month because her school schedule was so demanding. This is when the red flags start to wave, her school schedule was so demanding yet she was in multiple choirs that she would sing in once a week. She made time for choir but when I asked to hang out I was made to feel like a bother. Plus she played DND with at least 2 different groups of people.
Early in the relationship we were in her car after she dropped me off I asked if we could see each other a little more and she had a strange reaction, I didn’t want to seem needy so I backed off and later apologized via text. She responded with; “sometimes I just like to be alone.” Which as an introvert; I get 100%, so I let it be. But like….we only saw each other once a month as it was…..how could you possibly be alone any more??? I was always the one to ask to hang out, always. And every time I did I would sheepishly ask if she had some free time that weekend to hang out, because I felt like such a bother to her. I’m not exaggerating when I say we would easily go 3-5 weeks without seeing each other in person. We would text every day. But seeing her in person was a luxury. But don’t worry she always had time for choir every single week. Twice a week. Or DND. But seeing her girlfriend was too much strain on her school schedule.
I was always the one to text first. Whether it was good morning, or saying good night. Later in the relationship I wouldn’t text her just to see how long it would take her to text me that day, most time it wasn’t until 3-4 pm that I heard from her.
We never had sex, we barely even kissed.(which isn’t really important to me but damn). It was so difficult to have alone time with her so there was quite literally never an opportunity for intimacy. Towards the end of our relationship we would watch the bachelorette with her mom at her place, so we never had alone time for the last 3 months of dating.
For both valentines days we were together I sent flowers and chocolate to her house. She didn’t get me anything. For my 27th birthday we went out with my friends, and a small part of me wondered if she would offer to pay for my meal. Nope. She also didn’t get me a birthday gift or even a card. Flash forward to Christmas I get her a 250$ makeup palette that she always talked about and a blanket from her favourite K-Pop band. I got an xbox gift card and a cookbook. I need to emphasize that I DO NOT CARE ABOUT presents, I just literally wanted any sort of acknowledgment that she cared about me at all. I also feel the need to point out she has money, both her parents are lawyers and they are very well off and she gets paid to go to school because her field is very specialized. I was raised by a single mother and while I have my own career now, I’m far from rich. But I always went above and beyond to make her feel special and she did the bare minimum. Sometimes not even the bare minimum. This next one really bothered me; its my 28th birthday and I hadn’t mentioned it was coming up. A sick part of me wanted to see if she would remember, I know it’s stupid to test people in a relationship but I was genuinely curious to see if she would remember. It comes the day of my birthday, and I don’t hear from her until 3:30 pm. “Happy Birthday!” That was it. I was floored. A couple days later she managed to squeeze me into her schedule and we go out for dinner. Again, didn’t pay for my meal. For her birthday we went to a nice restaurant and I paid for the entire fucking thing it was almost 150$. Don’t worry she got me an xbox gift card though……..
But the worst part, beyond not seeing each other was how she treated me and made me feel. In the beginning she was very nice and kind, but slowly I think her true colours came out. She’s very smart, but she needs to be right all the time. Like literally every single conversation she needs to come out as right. I was never allowed to have my own opinions, she would make me feel stupid and correct me every time. I’m a bit of a goof and like to be silly, but she would look at me like I was an idiot, if I did a pretend British accent she would criticize it and tell me to stop. In the end I felt like a shell of myself. I was terrified to say something stupid. She would call out every single thing I did, if I merged a lane early while driving, called out (that actually happened). If I wiped my mouth after every bite, called out. If I said something she would have to google it to prove she was right or at least prove that I was wrong.
I would participate in her family activities, like birthdays and holidays. Side note: her family is lovely. I got especially close with her mom. Her mother is a sweetheart, a lovely human being and she treated me better than her daughter ever did. Her mom and I even snap chatted every day. M wouldn’t open my snaps for days and I could see when she was online. As weird as it might seem, I would have rather hung out with her mom than her. There were a couple times when we were with her mom, that M would call me out on something trivial and even her own mother was picking up on the vibes.
I had convinced myself I really liked this person, once I told her I loved her. Why, I’ll never know. She responded with “thanks, I’m not there yet but thanks for telling me.” I was gutted. I didn’t love her. I never did. In the end I hated her.
I would lie to my friends about her and say I was happy, my mom liked her which was the worst part because it would break her heart if she knew how I was feeling and being treated. I would make it seem like I was happy and she was this lovely person, but deep down I was dying. Towards the end of our relationship I was hanging out with a good friend of mine and someone who helped me a lot through my journey of accepting my identity as a lesbian. She asked me about my relationship and how it was going, and I honestly couldn’t say anything positive. This was the first time I was honest with someone in my life about how unhappy I was and I wasn’t sure how to process it.
Eventually she broke up with me; she said she felt like she made me nervous and that I cared about her more than she cared about me. Initially it hurt, and I felt bad. But after an hour, I wanted to do a freaking backflip. I was elated to be free. For the past 2 years I had felt like less of myself than I had ever been. It was the worst 2 years mentally of my life. I had twisted myself up into this sheepish person who just felt lucky to be chosen by someone. My self worth was so low that I thought this was the relationship I deserved, that I would never find anyone else and I should just be grateful that she chose me.
As the title says I’m still trying to recover and heal. It’s been about 9 months since I last saw her and I’m working on myself. That relationship showed me how compromised my mental health was and that I need to take care of myself. I have been seeing a therapist. Now don’t get me wrong I have struggled with mental health my entire life, but those 2 years were the worst of it. I’m not dating right now because I want to focus on myself and my personal goals first.
I still feel very embarrassed for how I let her treat me and embarrassed that I didn’t know the relationship was toxic. If anything I learned a lot from this experience.
If you have made it this far props to you because this was kind of a hot mess and wayyy too long. But it’s been bothering me even more lately and I guess I just felt like this might help. Even if no one reads it.
She didn’t want a relationship, I don’t know what she wanted. She used school as a buffer to limit the amount she saw me. I feel bad for the next person she dates and I hope they come to their senses quicker than I did. I deleted her off everything and I hope to never see her again. In closing, I fucking hate her guts.

2024.05.14 17:55 goltoof How hard to get a prescription for LRS solution?

Senior cat in early stage 2. Without fluids he gradually gets dehydrated which exponentially escalates his decline. Every vet so far insists that I have it done at their clinic. It's not sustainable for me to spend $75-100 every few days not to mention all of the monitoring they want to do. I'm confident I can do this myself while keeping everything sterile and following instructions to a T. The kit is staring me in the face on thrivingpets but need an rx. Is there no way to send the test results to a vet and do an online consultation to get a prescription?

2024.05.14 17:52 ZealousidealNobody22 Home assistant Chat GPT4o intergration

i was on chat gpt and asked it to create an intergration for chatgpt into home assistant and this is what it came up with

Step 1: Home Assistant Custom Component

First, create a custom component in Home Assistant to interface with the ChatGPT API.
Directory structure:
luaCopy code /config/custom_components/chatgpt_integration/ -- __init__.py -- manifest.json -- services.yaml
__init__.py:
pythonCopy code import openai import homeassistant.helpers.config_validation as cv import voluptuous as vol from homeassistant.core import HomeAssistant from homeassistant.helpers.typing import ConfigType, ServiceCall DOMAIN = 'chatgpt_integration' CONF_API_KEY = 'api_key' CONFIG_SCHEMA = vol.Schema({ DOMAIN: vol.Schema({ vol.Required(CONF_API_KEY): cv.string, }) }, extra=vol.ALLOW_EXTRA) def setup(hass: HomeAssistant, config: ConfigType): api_key = config[DOMAIN][CONF_API_KEY] openai.api_key = api_key def handle_chatgpt_request(call: ServiceCall): prompt = call.data.get('prompt') response = openai.Completion.create(engine="text-davinci-004", prompt=prompt, max_tokens=150) hass.states.set('chatgpt_integration.response', response.choices[0].text.strip()) hass.services.register(DOMAIN, 'ask', handle_chatgpt_request) return True
manifest.json:
jsonCopy code { "domain": "chatgpt_integration", "name": "ChatGPT Integration", "version": "1.0", "requirements": ["openai"], "dependencies": [], "codeowners": [] }
services.yaml:
yamlCopy code ask: description: "Ask ChatGPT a question" fields: prompt: description: "The question to ask ChatGPT" example: "What's the weather like today?"

Step 2: Web Interface

Create a simple HTML file to serve as the front end for interacting with the ChatGPT service in Home Assistant.
index.html:
htmlCopy code Home Assistant ChatGPT Interface

Home Automation with ChatGPT

Step 3: Deploy the Web Interface

To serve the index.html file, you can use Home Assistant’s built-in web server or another web server like Nginx or Apache.
Option 1: Serving with Home Assistant (simpler) Place index.html in the /config/www directory and access it via http://your-home-assistant-url/local/index.html.
Option 2: Serving with Nginx (advanced) Set up an Nginx server to serve the index.html file and proxy requests to Home Assistant.

Step 4: Testing

  1. Ensure your Home Assistant is running and the custom component is properly loaded.
  2. Access the web interface via http://your-home-assistant-url/local/index.html.
  3. Enter a prompt and see the response from ChatGPT displayed.
This example demonstrates a basic integration. For a production-ready solution, consider adding error handling, security measures (like API key protection), and a more sophisticated frontend framework.

2024.05.14 17:39 Starting_again_tow Waaagh update

Waaagh update
Hi all,
Putting some pictures here of how the waaagh is progressing. Basing is 100% finished yet
1) Giant almost finished. I got too excited when I had finished building / covering up all the foam so I forgot to add base elements before spraying so need to brush undercoat them now.
I intended to have glowing green eyes but couldn't get an effect I was happy with so now just has green warpaint on the face and soulless black eyes.
2) chariot without riders. Thought adding some warpaint to the chariot was appropriate obviously red because it goes faster
3) warboss, I love the dynamic pose. And was a bit of test use for blood technical paint. Picture doesn't show the glossy finish on the blood well but I quite like the effect so may use it on lots of other things (big stabba on front of chariot perhaps?)
4) weirdnob/boy. I like the contrast this model provides between all the muscled mobs then this lil guy with his beer belly like the old metal bsb I am using.
Need some practice with final edge highlights for characters as always seems either too heavy or too light being applied.

2024.05.14 17:33 DaveHervey Beverage market Cannabis legalization: soon grass instead of hops? May 8, 2024 in market report

Cannabis has now been – at least partially – legal in Germany for a good five weeks. Will there soon be THC drinks in this country? Will Germans then drink less alcohol? And where can the substances actually be consumed? While the answers to this will probably take a while to come, many, including those in the beverage industry, are looking with excitement to Canada, where marijuana has been legal since 2018.
The approval there quickly led to the introduction of a wealth of new mixed drinks. The beverage manufacturer Truss Beverages from the province of Ontario brought non-alcoholic drinks enriched with THC and CBD in a wide variety of, mostly fruity, flavors and different, precisely defined potencies onto the market under the brand names XMG, Little Victory, Mollo and Bedfellows. Truss is a joint venture between brewing company Molson Coors and cannabis company Hexo.
THC drinks soon in Germany too? It's no wonder that, given the opportunities offered by a completely new category, companies in this country are already positioning themselves to be among the pioneers if cannabis extracts are also approved as beverage additives here. For example, the Hamburg company “Good Drinks” is currently discussing whether THC in its drinks could be a useful brand addition, as co-owner Frank Maßen reports.
Good Drinks is currently on the market with vodka and energy drinks, for example. Well-known Hamburg restaurateurs such as Axel Strehlitz and John Schierhorn, both of whom have deep roots in the local club scene, are involved in the start-up. Maßen sees THC as a logical progression for a brand that has partying in its DNA, but “the idea of introducing a THC variant raises a lot of questions, especially in terms of brand image and acceptance,” said Maßen.
Discussions are currently underway internally about how to handle this potential expansion without damaging the essence of the brand, which is strongly linked to the club culture. There are intensive discussions with the licensors of the Hamburg Club Combine, which launched the brand together with Good Drinks to support the local club scene as a social business ( we reported ).
Some THC drinks already on the market in Canada Some THC drinks already on the market in Canada (Product photos: Truss Beverages) Breweries would certainly also be potential manufacturers. But the German Brewers Association considers it unlikely that many breweries could jump on the cannabis bandwagon. “Germany is and remains the country of beer drinkers. With 1,500 breweries and almost 8,000 brands, we have a beer variety that is unique in the world,” says Managing Director Holger Eichele. Beer is still the national drink, although consumption has been declining for years, as in many other European countries.
“Edibles” are still banned under EU law Apart from that, an introduction would not yet be legally possible, because drinks with THC or CBD fall under “edibles” in the EU; This refers to foods and drinks that contain cannabis. They are therefore affected by the Novel Food Regulation, explains the managing director of the Bavarian Cannabis Association, Wenzel Cerveny. This means that they can only be placed on the market once they have been tested as safe by the EU.
“This is something that a small manufacturer cannot do - this test would have to be initiated by a large company,” says Cerveny. He himself is currently working with the small brewery “Unertl” from Haag in Upper Bavaria on an alcohol-free beer with hemp extract. However, without THC or CBD, but with hemp as a special taste.
To provide a more detailed explanation, the EU states that there has been no evidence of any significant consumption of the individual substance CBD (cannabidiol) before May 15, 1997. It is therefore assessed as novel in the European Commission's Novel Food Catalog under the entry “Cannabinoids” and therefore requires its own approval. As long as this does not exist, such products are not marketable. The same applies to products containing THC.
Alcohol consumption in Canada fell after legalization It's not just new products that could affect the German beverage industry if they are allowed in the future. Using Canada as an example, it is clear to see that cannabis consumption has a direct influence on consumers' drinking behavior. A joint study by the University of Manitoba, Memorial University and the University of Toronto has shown that Canadians are drinking significantly less alcohol since they were legally allowed to consume cannabis.
For example, the study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence observed an average monthly decline in beer consumption of 136 hectoliters per 100,000 people after legalization. In this context, the authors speak of a “substitution effect”, in which consumers choose cannabis instead of beer as their intoxicant of choice.
Mixing with alcohol is not advisable Both together are considered by “connoisseurs” to be not very digestible. Even Truss Beverages advises against consuming its THC drinks mixed with alcohol on its website, citing recommendations from the Canadian Health Authority. Again and again, the product description in connection with the dosage is about ensuring a “controlled and predictable consumption experience”.
Clear warnings label drinks containing THC in Canada. Clear warnings label drinks containing THC in Canada. (Photo: Truss Beverages) A look at the 2022/23 financial year shows how strong cannabis legalization can have on the alcohol industry. Accordingly, Canada received more excise tax revenue from cannabis ($660 million) than from wine ($205 million) and beer ($450 million) combined.
It is still completely unclear whether the industry will have to adapt to similar shifts in this country. The German Brewers Association is rather relaxed: It is still far too early to speculate about possible effects, emphasizes DBB boss Eichele. “There are studies from abroad where markets have been examined in more detail. However, these studies cannot be transferred one-to-one to Germany; the starting points are far too different. We don’t expect any visible effects in this country.”
Where smoking is allowed, you can also smoke weed The question of how to deal with marijuana users in the catering industry is already very current; It is being hotly debated all over the country. While the use of the drug indoors is usually prohibited, there is scope for freedom in outdoor areas and, for example, beer gardens.
The German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga) says that initial feedback from the industry shows a tendency not to allow the consumption of marijuana. The legal situation varies from federal state to federal state, as Dehoga managing director and legal expert Jürgen Benad knows: “Where smoking is still permitted according to the legal regulations of the federal states, cannabis consumption is also generally permitted.”
But it is also clear: “Every restaurateur is allowed to prohibit guests from consuming cannabis – even in smoking bars – based on their house rules,” says Benad. This also applies to outdoor catering. Cannabis may not be consumed “in the immediate presence” of minors. What this specifically means in the catering industry will not be easy to define in individual cases.
Zero tolerance or laissez-faire? While the beer gardens in Munich, for example, will remain consumption-free until further notice due to Bavaria's zero-tolerance policy, people in Berlin are more open-minded. “Since the cannabis law was approved, the consumption of cannabis in the catering industry has been considered synonymous with the consumption of cigarettes and other tobacco products,” says Tony Ettelt-Brundiers, managing director of “Zenner”, a cultural and gastronomic ensemble consisting of a vineyard, beer garden and organic ice cream parlor , concert hall, club space and event location in the capital.
“We are not questioning this law,” said Ettelt-Brundiers. “Regardless of what our guests smoke in the Zenner’s outdoor areas, we ask everyone to be considerate, especially if other guests could feel disturbed by someone else’s smoke, regardless of its origin.” This principle of mutuality Consideration has worked surprisingly well in Zenner for more than 200 years, which the aforementioned amendment to the law should not change, according to the managing director.
How much cannabis will ultimately change the beverage industry and social life surrounding beverages is still entirely unknown.

  • The OA is totally different from the PA. Additionally, the wording of the questions and the available multiple-choice answers differ from the material in the quizzes and tests from the textbook. (This was frustrating for me.) What helped was to take my time on each question and think critically. Also, I bookmarked about 15 questions during the exam. Revisiting them later in the test significantly improved my confidence in the selections I ended up settling on.
The approach I used:
  1. Skim the text & only stop to read what interests you / sticks out to you (I do this first in most courses to build momentum for studying.)
  2. Find a quizlet (search D080), & use the "learn" function to quickly gain an understanding of terms and concepts
  3. Return to the course text - take all the quizzes and tests for every module and then unit.
  4. Take the PA, pass/fail doesn't matter (but if you use hjon420's D080 WGU quizlet you should get 100%)
  5. Return to the text again and read all of unit 2, then take the quizzes and unit test again (it is best to do this shortly before taking the OA).
  6. Finally (the most important step): Ensure you are well-rested, well-fed, and well-caffeinated. Crush that OA!
Get after it!
