Placed a few orders recently. These will soon be in the queue for testing. If y'all want something specific tested I can add it to the list, but it may be a long time before I get to it, if at all. I pay for everything myself - no sponsors. I currently have all of $8 left in the budget for testing and have to prioritize spending. This may be it for the year, but high on the list is an FM-9 lower receiver for extensive testing when I can spare the cash. And ammo... Ugh.

KAK Industries 9.5oz. K-Spec buffer + weights: What if I put it in an A5 buffer tube and add a Kynshot spacer weight, bumping it up to 12oz. Will it improve felt-recoil performance? How will it compare to the GRS? What about JRC tube and 3 weights, for a 14.5oz extra-heavy option? Also need to test 9.5oz. K-Spec vs. plain 6.0oz. RB5007 or RB5015HD hydraulic buffer.
Taccom shortstroke bolt: Doesn't work shortstroked with Colt mag adapters (tries to double-feed). Will it work shortstroked with my 9mm Glock lower? If yes, this could give us a "RB5000HP+2 Kynshot weights" 9.8oz system in a carbine tube while retaining LRBHO. Test for function.
Home DIY feed cone/ramp: This will be later in the year or next year. I have a 3" Alpha Shooting Sports barrel bought on super sale with the old style feed cone. Plan to test it out with Glock and Colt lowers (failures expected...), then manually add a 56°-ish inward slope feed ramp to the bottom of the feed cone to fix feeding & make a video of the process. (Why 56°? Because Aero's invoices said they added a 124° feed cone to their re-coned barrels.) 56° ⦛ <--124°

- Davidson Defense SS firing pin retainers Link (2 for $4.50). I absolutely hate the standard FP retainer cotter pin. They always fight me when going in. These look similar to the FM-9 retainer which is much easier to use and makes cleaning the FP channel a breeze. Review fit/use.

Also, I went a little crazy and made two versions of Prismatic Angel. One with the advice to add Vigilance, and the other version is a full blown commander(with a little inspiration from Morophon). I'm about to buy either a Jr carbine mlok or kd k9. Both are on sale. Jrc $1200 ($100 off), kd k9 $1100 ($250 off). The k9 seems like a better deal but I'm well aware of kodiak defence's quality control. I've only heard good things about the jrc but the k9 looks a bit nicer to me. Can anyone compare these 2 that have experience with both? I've only heard about the mag issues with the k9. Are there any other problems with the k9 and the jrc that I should know about? I'd also like to mention I'm not interested in the fx9 or the ruger pc9 because of price and looks.

The world is running out of water—and economists are worried, especially for the two most populous states, India and China. The world’s intensifying droughts are affecting industry, electricity, agriculture, direct human use, and the transition to renewable energies. Experts fear a second Dust Bowl—one that could be rolling, and worldwide. But today the stakes are much higher, and the world too complex, to manage the feedback loops. A Canadian Dust Bowl may be the first to arrive. South of Calgary, the province has received almost no rain in months. Crops are drying, and dying, and the region’s agriculture may be totally devastated by the end of the month, if drought persists.
Scientists theorize that the Arctic will absorb more heat more quickly in the future—and give sub-Arctic oceans less salty water in exchange. The heat transfer will predictably prevent more ice from forming, and melt Arctic ice faster. In the Antarctic, super-salty deep sea water is heating up, with consequences to be determined. The 21-page Nature Climate Change study is too complex for me to unpack here. Scientists keep warning about record ocean temperatures but the people are helpless to do anything about it.
Climate policy groups are claiming that corporate net zero pledges have zero credibility, even as about 90% of the world economy has (allegedly) hopped onto the “‘net zero’ bandwagon”. According to these scientists, about 4% of such pledges are on the right track… The findings are explained in a 52-page report, the “Net Zero Stocktake 2023”.
England’s wettest place, the Lake District, is going dry. Some experts are calling the drought the “next pandemic.” The world is expected to have a much larger demand for water in 2050, yet we cannot adequately provide water to even half the world today. Heat waves and drought are hurting crop yields in Europe. A similar phenomenon is hitting Vietnam.
Iranian politicians are supporting seizing water from the Helmand River between Iran and Afghanistan. A 50-year old treaty guarantees Iran to a certain quantity of water, but drought and overuse has precluded that promise. Soon enough the Taliban will re-learn the limits of their sovereignty.
A cyclone killed at least 11 people in Brazil last week. The Spree River in Berlin is expected to drop considerably later this summer. Heat waves in Mexico blast migrants and others.
Shell Oil has committed to extracting more oil in contravention to its pledge to be net-zero by 2050. Aggressive protests in Angola are expected throughout the month, triggered by high oil prices. The UN claims that fossil fuels are incompatible with human survival, but we have apparently chosen oil over humanity’s long-term survival. So it goes.
The world’s new temperature records for early June, surpassed 1.5 °C in summer for the first time. Marine heat waves contributed to the death of thousands of fish that washed onto a Texas beach.

COVID: I had the opportunity to take a couple flights last week, and I traveled through a busy international airport. It was a week of massacres. At least 41 people, mostly children, were killed in Uganda by ISIS-affiliates. 11 farmers were slain in Nigeria and Boko Haram is suspected. Hundreds of asylum-seekers are missing, and 78+ dead after a shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea. 46+ people at an IDP camp in the DRC were killed by a militia, using a combination of machetes, firearms, and fire. Ecuador has seen daily massacres (3+ killed, according to their definition) for more than half the year. Extensive damage wrought by Wagner Group in Sudan (backing the paramilitary forces challenging the government) as the conflict unfolds. And the death toll from a Kenyan cult climbs to over 300, as more bodies are exhumed.
Eight months have passed since Haiti’s Prime Minister requested an armed intervention to rescue the Collapsed nation from predatory gangs—yet no nation has taken up the call. The U.S. and UN are allegedly trying to put together a multinational force, but nobody is interested. Therefore, civilians are suffering—and others are joining the paramilitary groups fighting for control of the ports, people, and positions of strategic value.

It’s all about energy. The international project to create fusion power is way behind schedule—and costs are soaring. The world is running out of water—and economists are worried, especially for the two most populous states, India and China. The world’s intensifying droughts are affecting industry, electricity, agriculture, direct human use, and the transition to renewable energies. Experts fear a second Dust Bowl—one that could be rolling, and worldwide. But today the stakes are much higher, and the world too complex, to manage the feedback loops. A Canadian Dust Bowl may be the first to arrive. South of Calgary, the province has received almost no rain in months. Crops are drying, and dying, and the region’s agriculture may be totally devastated by the end of the month, if drought persists.
Scientists theorize that the Arctic will absorb more heat more quickly in the future—and give sub-Arctic oceans less salty water in exchange. The heat transfer will predictably prevent more ice from forming, and melt Arctic ice faster. In the Antarctic, super-salty deep sea water is heating up, with consequences to be determined. The 21-page Nature Climate Change study is too complex for me to unpack here. Scientists keep warning about record ocean temperatures but the people are helpless to do anything about it.
Climate policy groups are claiming that corporate net zero pledges have zero credibility, even as about 90% of the world economy has (allegedly) hopped onto the “‘net zero’ bandwagon”. According to these scientists, about 4% of such pledges are on the right track… The findings are explained in a 52-page report, the “Net Zero Stocktake 2023”.
England’s wettest place, the Lake District, is going dry. Some experts are calling the drought the “next pandemic.” The world is expected to have a much larger demand for water in 2050, yet we cannot adequately provide water to even half the world today. Heat waves and drought are hurting crop yields in Europe. A similar phenomenon is hitting Vietnam.
Iranian politicians are supporting seizing water from the Helmand River between Iran and Afghanistan. A 50-year old treaty guarantees Iran to a certain quantity of water, but drought and overuse has precluded that promise. Soon enough the Taliban will re-learn the limits of their sovereignty.
A cyclone killed at least 11 people in Brazil last week. The Spree River in Berlin is expected to drop considerably later this summer. Heat waves in Mexico blast migrants and others.
Shell Oil has committed to extracting more oil in contravention to its pledge to be net-zero by 2050. Aggressive protests in Angola are expected throughout the month, triggered by high oil prices. The UN claims that fossil fuels are incompatible with human survival, but we have apparently chosen oil over humanity’s long-term survival. So it goes.
The world’s new temperature records for early June, surpassed 1.5 °C in summer for the first time. Marine heat waves contributed to the death of thousands of fish that washed onto a Texas beach.

COVID: I had the opportunity to take a couple flights last week, and I traveled through a busy international airport. Thousands of people walking around and I only saw one other person wearing a face mask—and I confess that there were times in the airport and on the plane when I unmasked for a while, something that would be unthinkable a couple years ago. Yet the reality of (Long) COVID hasn’t changed whatsoever. The virus endures, even if our discipline does not. A few people asked me if I was sick…yes, sick with the persistent awareness of how a contagious, potentially debilitating disease can spread in close quarters. However, every week my masking resolve weakens a bit more: sometimes I go to the supermarket unmasked, I forget to take a mask on public transport, and I am slowly influenced by the madding crowd—and as the world heats up, masking becomes much more irritating. Thinking back to those early years of COVID, it feels like a strange dream, a moment of collective……panic/insanity/clarity?

It was a week of massacres. At least 41 people, mostly children, were killed in Uganda by ISIS-affiliates. 11 farmers were slain in Nigeria and Boko Haram is suspected. Hundreds of asylum-seekers are missing, and 78+ dead after a shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea. 46+ people at an IDP camp in the DRC were killed by a militia, using a combination of machetes, firearms, and fire. Ecuador has seen daily massacres (3+ killed, according to their definition) for more than half the year. Extensive damage wrought by Wagner Group in Sudan (backing the paramilitary forces challenging the government) as the conflict unfolds. And the death toll from a Kenyan cult climbs to over 300, as more bodies are exhumed.
Eight months have passed since Haiti’s Prime Minister requested an armed intervention to rescue the Collapsed nation from predatory gangs—yet no nation has taken up the call. The U.S. and UN are allegedly trying to put together a multinational force, but nobody is interested. Therefore, civilians are suffering—and others are joining the paramilitary groups fighting for control of the ports, people, and positions of strategic value.
A new 90-page report on nuclear modernization claims that the number of nuclear weapons in the world has risen over the last year by 86, if you believe the data. Russia and China have each developed a few dozen more warheads, bringing the total estimated number of nukes to 21,512—more than enough to destroy civilization several times over. Europol, the EU’s law enforcement agency, has released its 94-page terrorism report for 2022, in which they claim that there were 28 terror attacks (attempted or completed) in the EU in 2022. Italy had the most (12). 18 attacks were considered “left-wing and anarchist,” 6 were “jihadist,” and 4 were “right-wing attacks.” Definitions for these can be found in the full study, which also says that different member states may define terrorism differently.
Germany released its first-ever national security strategy to the public, and the writing's on the wall.

And by “better” they mean readmitting people who fled through Tunisia and securing exits through the Mediterranean—in exchange, the EU will stabilize Tunisia’s failing economy. Tunisia will receive migrants/refugees/asylum-seekers, and probably expel them further south.
2022 set new records for forcibly displaced people, according to a new 48-page report from the UNHCR that came out on Wednesday. You can compare the UN report with the 76-page 2023 GRID Report on internal displacement that I posted a few weeks back. The number of displaced people grew by over 19M in 2022, compared with 2021.

It’s all about energy. The international project to create fusion power is way behind schedule—and costs are soaring. Meanwhile, China plays both sides, increasing coal production while also scaling up renewable energy and calling for power use to be reduced. Some analysts believe that an energy crisis is coming as soon as this year, marked by OPEC+ cuts and rising prices of oil & gas. That author predicts a sinking of US shale extraction and declining production from Saudi Arabia.
Fuel shortages have already come to Cuba, and beyond. The IEA (International Energy Agency) released its 127-page Oil Analysis & Forecast Report for 2023-2028. They predict a sharp dropoff in oil demand starting next year, with 90% of new demand growth coming from the Asia-Pacific region. Africa’s oil production is expected to decline, though Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, and Uganda are expected to begin decent-size extractions soon. Tensions ebb and flow between Serbia and Kosovo, and western diplomats may be playing the wrong tune. NATO deployed peacekeepers to northern Kosovo a couple weeks ago, after pro-Serbian rioters clashed with police.
Damage report: about 200,000 archived documents in Dakar, Senegal, are missing or have been destroyed following a riot sparked by the sentencing of a political opposition leader. The documents were mostly burnt by Molotov cocktails, and mostly consist of university records, old theses, birth certificates, old photos, and other documents maintained by the university.
Ukraine’s counteroffensive is yielding mixed results, making gains in some regions and liberating occupied villages. Yet in other places they are losing tanks to ubiquitous landmines and Chinese-manufactured drones. Both sides are reportedly holding back their main forces, preferring for now to skirmish and probe for softer spots. Some observers believe Ukraine will soon surround Bakhmut and recapture that strategic objective. Russia continues to warn about the nuclear option...

A recent study by Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology found that the current global production levels of raw materials will not match the demand of the European Union’s EV industry, not even when accounting for recycling. The paper points out that the metals that are highly sought after, such as dysprosium, neodymium, manganese and niobium, are of great economic importance to the EU, while their supply is limited and it takes time to scale up raw material production. “The EU is heavily dependent on imports of these metals because extraction is concentrated in a few countries such as China, South Africa and Brazil. The lack of availability is both an economic and an environmental problem for the EU, and risks delaying the transition to electric cars and environmentally sustainable technologies,” Maria Ljunggren, lead author of the study, said in a media statement. “In addition, since many of these metals are scarce, we also risk making access to them difficult for future generations if we are unable to use what is already in circulation.” Together with the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, EMPA, Ljunggren has surveyed the metals that are currently in use in Europe’s vehicle fleet. The assignment has resulted in an extensive database that shows the presence over time of 11 metals in new vehicles, vehicles in use and vehicles that are recycled. The survey, which goes back as far as 2006, shows that the proportion of critical metals has increased significantly in vehicles, a development the researchers believe will continue. Several rare earth elements are among the metals that have increased the most. “Neodymium and dysprosium usage has increased by around 400% and 1,700% respectively in new cars over the period, and this is even before electrification had taken off,” Ljunggren said. “Gold and silver, which are not listed as critical metals but have great economic value, have increased by around 80%.” According to the researcher, the idea behind the survey and the database is to provide decision-makers, companies and organizations with an evidence base to support a more sustainable use of the EU’s critical metals. A major challenge is that these materials, which are found in very small concentrations in each car, are economically difficult to recycle. “If recycling is to increase, cars need to be designed to enable these metals to be recovered, while incentives and flexible processes for more recycling need to be put in place. But that’s not the current reality”, Ljunggren noted. “It is important to increase recycling. At the same time, it is clear that an increase in recycling alone cannot meet requirements in the foreseeable future, just because the need for critical metals in new cars is increasing so much. Therefore there needs to be a greater focus on how we can substitute other materials for these metals. Photograph: Krisztian Bocsi/Bloomberg On the flat plains of Lower Saxony, near the town of Salzgitter, a new empire is growing out of the land. Well, specifically out of the mud right now, as it’s been raining for the past couple of days and, like all building sites, it doesn’t take long for the muddy puddles to form. Once the mud is clear and replaced by concrete and steel, this 260,000sq m site will be the home of Volkswagen’s first battery “gigafactory”, which has become something of a buzzword of late, applied to any production site that just happens to be large. This is, or at least in due course will be, a factory for making gigas. Gigawatts of power, packaged in batteries destined for Volkswagen’s fleet of new electric cars, and indeed any customers for such parts that it finds along the line. Speaking of parts, the design and management of the factory is actually under the auspices of Volkswagen Components, the part of the car-making giant that also packs up and sends out the spare parts for your 10-year old Golf. Components is a far bigger business than it sounds, though – it’s worth some €40 billion to Volkswagen, so the €2 billion investment needed in Salzgitter to make the battery factory is getting on for small change. Even so, a whole separate division within VW Components, called Power Co, has been set up so that it can act like a start-up, and make the sort of rapid decisions and fast-developing business plans needed so that VW can keep up in the battery power race. It’s part of a €30 billion investment in battery technology, research, and construction over the next seven years to deliver a target of 80 per cent of Volkswagen’s sales, worldwide, being made up of electric cars by 2030. In Ireland and the rest of Europe, that figure is more like 100 per cent, although with the recent lobbying to water down the proposed EU ban on combustion engines, that may change in the interim. Eventually the plan is to increase production to 40gWh per year, enough batteries for 500,000 electric carsSalzgitter has been part of the VW empire for some time now. The factory on the site started in 1970, making the somewhat unloved K70 hatchback and saloon, a precursor to the first-generation Passat. By 1975, Salzgitter had been refitted to make petrol engines, and it’s been doing that ever since. Now, the plant that made engines is turning over to making batteries instead. There’s already a pilot production plant on the site, a section of the factory that once made cylinder heads and which is now making experimental batteries for the next-generation of electric cars and vans. The gigafactory that’s currently rising, to an eventual height of 60m, out of the Saxon mud will have a capacity of 10-gigawatt/hours (gWh) for each of its two large production halls. Eventually the plan is to increase production to 40gWh per year, enough batteries for 500,000 electric cars. That’s just a small part of what VW needs to build all those new EVs though – the company estimates that it needs some 240hWh of battery production by 2028, so Salzgitter will be joined by further Gigafactories in Valencia, in Sweden and in Ontario. Their discovery holds promise for a new class of more sustainable high-performance titanium alloys for applications in aerospace, biomedical, chemical engineering, space and energy technologies. RMIT University and the University of Sydney led the innovation, in collaboration with Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the company Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence in Melbourne. Lead researcher, Ma Qian a professor from RMIT, said the team embedded circular economy thinking in their design, creating great promise for producing their new titanium alloys from industrial waste and low-grade materials. "Reusing waste and low-quality materials has the potential to add economic value and reduce the high carbon footprint of the titanium industry," said Qian from RMIT's Center for Additive Manufacturing in the School of Engineering. Credit: Ma Qian, Simon Ringer and colleagues What type of titanium alloys has the team made?The team's titanium alloys consist of a mixture of two forms of titanium crystals, called alpha-titanium phase and beta-titanium phase, each corresponding to a specific arrangement of atoms.This class of alloys has been the backbone of the titanium industry. Since 1954, these alloys have been produced primarily by adding aluminum and vanadium to titanium. The research team investigated the use of oxygen and iron—two of the most powerful stabilizers and strengtheners of alpha- and beta-titanium phases—which are abundant and inexpensive. Two challenges have hindered the development of strong and ductile alpha-beta titanium-oxygen-iron alloys through the conventional manufacturing processes, Qian said. "One challenge is that oxygen—described colloquially as 'the kryptonite to titanium'—can make titanium brittle, and the other is that adding iron could lead to serious defects in the form of large patches of beta-titanium." The team used Laser Directed Energy Deposition (L-DED), a 3D printing process suitable for making large, complex parts, to print their alloys from metal powder. "A key enabler for us was the combination of our alloy design concepts with 3D-printing process design, which has identified a range of alloys that are strong, ductile and easy to print," Qian said. The attractive properties of these new alloys that can rival those of commercial alloys are attributed to their microstructure, the team says. "This research delivers a new titanium alloy system capable of a wide and tunable range of mechanical properties, high manufacturability, enormous potential for emissions reduction and insights for materials design in kindred systems," said co-lead researcher University of Sydney Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Ringer. "The critical enabler is the unique distribution of oxygen and iron atoms within and between the alpha-titanium and beta-titanium phases. "We've engineered a nanoscale gradient of oxygen in the alpha-titanium phase, featuring high-oxygen segments that are strong, and low-oxygen segments that are ductile allowing us to exert control over the local atomic bonding and so mitigate the potential for embrittlement." (May 26, 2023) – NioCorp Developments Ltd. (“NioCorp” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ:NB) (TSX:NB) is pleased to announce that it has successfully demonstrated an ability to potentially double the recovery of titanium from each tonne of ore the Company expects to mine at its Nebraska-based Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project (the “Project”), once project financing is obtained and the commercial plant is constructed. The new process is expected to produce a purer form of titanium that may command a higher price than is assumed in NioCorp’s June 2022 feasibility study for the Project (the “Feasibility Study”). NioCorp’s demonstration plant in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, has shown that the Company’s new and improved recovery process can likely achieve an 83.7% rate of overall titanium recovery to final product. This compares to a 40.3% titanium recovery rate in NioCorp’s previous process approach. While Russia is only the third largest titanium mineral producer in the world, it is the world’s largest supplier of aerospace-grade titanium, producing half of the world’s titanium used in aerospace before 2022.
