Things to consider before renovating the roof of a 1905 tudor revival house

2024.05.16 20:22 Blazar123 Things to consider before renovating the roof of a 1905 tudor revival house

Hello, first time posting on this sub, and a total amateur; so I do apologise if my question is very basic. I have recently bought a tudor revival house in England built in 1905 that requires the roof and windows to be renovated. Both roof and windows let in water when raining. We want to kick off now the roof replacement (work to be done by a roofer) and wondered if there are other things I need to renovate first before changing the roof. For example, should I have the timber professionally checked, or any other structural aspect before investing in the new roof. We did a RICS lvl 3 survey when we bought the house, and they did not highlight any other problem other than the obvious roof and windows, but I wanted to double check. If there is a better subreddit to post this question in, please let me know. Thank you all.

Someone told me for the gutters he would just cut straight and put on end caps, but then they won't be able to be angled to meet and fit the pitch of the roof line the way they are now. Are there any other ways to seal the gutters against the roof shingles and maintain the aesthetics of the current design?

2024.05.16 19:46 Swan1000 Anyone have experience with releasing adult tongue tie ?

I am now 21 years old and I have tongue tie problem . There are many challenges for me. I can't stick out my tongue, so I'm pretty sure I can't tongue kiss someone. I have difficulty pronouncing certain letters, especially words with "I" and other similar sounds. I have to think carefully and choose my words, which lowers my confidence in communicating with others, especially strangers. I can't touch my tongue to the roof of my mouth, which I believe might cause to my difficulty speaking. I also speak very slowly, though I'm not sure if that's due to tongue-tie or because I'm an introvert.
I live in a small town w, which is one of the reasons I haven't had surgery yet . Now I'm thinking of going to a major city hospital for a check-up. . I just want to know if anyone else with tongue-tie experiences similar issues and if it causes the same difficulties.

2024.05.16 19:37 jwd52 Advice on how to deal with company that installed a non-functioning mini split system in my home

I'm going to try to keep this short and sweet, since there are enough details in this story to bore almost anyone not directly involved.
In December of 2023, I had a reputable company come out to install a brand new mini split heating/cooling system in my home. I paid in full, in cash upon completion of the installation.
The system includes four indoor units, heating/cooling four different rooms of my home. I live in the desert Southwest, so I only turned the system on for heat during a few cold nights at the height of winter. At that point, everything seemed to work alright. In mid-April, I turned the a/c on for the first time. Immediately I could tell that something wasn't right. The system blew room-temperature air for a short period of time before displaying an error code on each of the indoor units. I called the company and just over a week later a technician came out to investigate the problem.
Once again, I'm going to skip over a lot of details here. Suffice it to say that this company has sent technicians out about six times over the past month. What has been achieved thus far is that two of the four indoor units blow cold air, but if I try to turn the other two on, they work for a short period (maybe twenty minutes to an hour) before the whole system shuts down and displays an error code. Over the past few days, one of the two "functioning" units has also begun to leak large quantities of water--like over a pint at a time if I had to estimate. It's happened three times in about four days. That unit is now turned off, so I currently have one functioning mini split unit out of the four that I paid to have installed as daytime temperatures in my area are approach 100 degrees.
Furthermore, this series of events has been punctuated by some truly bad customer service. I've been told multiple times to expect calls back that have never come. A technician has missed an appointment; on another occasion two technicians came out at the same time, confused as to why the other was there. One morning a technician arrived unannounced shortly after 7 AM and began stomping around on the roof, scaring my toddler awake. This is all to say that, after over a month of this process with no end in sight, I'm beginning to lose patience and faith in this company to repair this HVAC system.
Recently I've begun documenting everything in writing and with time-stamped photos and videos, which I've been sending directly to the owner of the company via email. I really hope it doesn't come to this, but I'm beginning to consider some sort of legal action against this company. I paid in full (nearly $10,000) for an HVAC system that doesn't work, and I feel at this point that I've given the company ample opportunity to remedy the situation.
I guess what I'm asking is, am I responding in a reasonable way? And at what point would you escalate this sort of situation with a lawyer, in small claims court, etc.? If anyone has ever experienced a similar situation, I'd love to hear your story. Thanks for any guidance or advice.

2024.05.16 19:14 MotorCalm770 Pain associated with neck herniation

Hello everyone and thank you in advance for reading.
I am a 31 year old female. I don't drink, I use weed everyday, and I am in relatively good health overall (blood work always in good ranges, minimal issues, not often sick).
I work as a delivery driver for UPS, 45-50 hours a week average. For exercise, I alternate between strength training and cardio. Every day for an hour. I walk my dogs everyday for 1.5 hours total.
I eat fine. Better than most of my peers. Lots of veggies and protein. My biggest issue is eating enough food.
Last year around the end of May, I experienced intense pain starting at the top of my rotater cuff all the way down to my hips and under my armpits around my ribs. I try to continue about my day because the pain started at work. I am unloading a large amount of 20+ lb boxes and my hands fail. I drop the box, luckily it was coming off the cart so it was already like an inch from the floor. At this point my hand and shoulder are tingly and nunb. I go to the workers comp clinic concentra, get an x ray, they determine it's "soft tissue damage".
I went through 3 months of shitty physical therapy, 3 chiropractor visits, and then finally an mri where they said the issue might be herniation in my neck but they were unable to view it with the images they took and since the original complaint was about my back and shoulder, they can't image my neck.
I give up on workers comp figuring it out and turn to my primary care doctor. I explain everything to him, including offering to get the images concentra took so he could see what they are talking about. He suggests I start physical therapy at kaiser and then go from there and manage my pain with naproxen in the mean time.
I finally get an appointment for PT at kaiser and it feels like the same run around I got at concentra. I ask for neck specific exercises since I've noticed the pain begins in my neck just under my jaw. Sometimes it manifests as a migraine, most days it's just feels sore in my shoulder blade and my neck.
It's November at this point.
In December, I am slammed against the wall and floor several times and had elbows and knees shoved into my shoulder blade while face down on the floor. I suffered what was assumed to be a concussion and pain levels doubled.
Now, I get concussion headaches that are definitely separate from the migraines. I continue to manage the pain with naproxen and exercise. Some days, the pain is too much and I can't even walk the dogs.
I've brought up the headaches to my doctor and he suggested managing it with effexor, which I definitely don't want to do and I think covers up the actual problem rather than addressing it.
What's the best way to approach this? Should I have gotten any scans during this time? My insurance is through the roof, everything is covered or very very low cost. How do I tell my doctor I don't feel like I'm receiving the best care? Or am I just being whiney? Is this one of those situations where it's this or surgery? I'd rather avoid surgery as long as possible.

Got Scammed, do these shingles need replaced now?
I recently had a few different roofing companies come out to check on a leak in our house. Two of the three companies said that it was likely just wind driven, and that no further repairs were needed. The third company instantly put a patch down on my roof and is now demanding $300 to have it removed. I’d like to fix it myself. Do I need to pull both shingles off completely and replace them or can I seal the nail holes that he created with roofing cement, and asphalt granules?

2024.05.16 18:25 EebamXela You should connect with the VA

https://www.patientcare.va.gov/lgbt/
I get 100% of my healthcare through the VA. I have no service connections (disability). It’s pretty crazy how much they have under one roof. All providers are able to see your entire chart and I’ve been helped out by many with getting referred to specialists I would never have thought to ask for, simply because they’re all able to see everything.
General primary healthcare
Nutritionist
Case management (super helpful for navigating the VA system as well as getting veteran resources outside the VA)
Hormones
Therapy
Psychiatry
Voice feminization training
Laser hair removal
And several other things including various therapeutic group things
Another fun bonus thing is that your health information can be synchronized to your Health app on your phone. I have a complete medical history right there for me to keep track of including all bloodwork and diagnostic stuff and literally any bit of information that they add to your chart. Right there.
Sadly they don’t yet offer gender affirming surgical services yet except for every specific cases. See link down below.
You’d be surprised what things count as a disability. I’m about to be connected for having astigmatism in my right eye caused by months of being on a periscope. I didn’t think simply “now I wear glasses” would count as a disability but hey I’m not complaining.
You can also be referred to civilian providers on the VA’s dime if they don’t have the means to provide it themselves within a reasonable drive distance.
You can get reimbursed for literally any mile you drive to any scheduled appointment. My VA doesn’t have the equipment so I drive from Albany to the Manhattan clinic for laser and get roughly $180 back every time.
I completely get the skepticism of the VA but for real they’ve changed A LOT especially for LGBT vets.
Each clinic has an LGBT coordinator who can be a fantastic way to start the process.

Copied from their website:
Gender Affirming Care at VA Information for Veterans VA provides a wide range of treatments to all eligible Veterans. Gender-affirming transition-related care plans are personalized based on your goals and your health. Talk to your treatment team to see if these services are right for you.
• Gender-Affirming Hormones: Your primary care team can help you with hormone therapy if it is right for you. Medications aren’t a goal for everyone and they have both risks and benefits. The team may involve an Endocrinologist. Talk to your treatment team about your family building goals and fertility before starting treatment.
• Pre-treatment Assessments for Gender-Affirming Hormones: In the U.S., all prescriptions are linked to a diagnosis the medication is treating. Providers will talk to you about your gender identity and your goals for treatment and consider if a diagnosis is appropriate. Blood work and other tests may be needed before hormones are prescribed.
• Voice and Communication Training: Speech Language Pathologists trained in gender- affirming treatments can help you train your voice and movements to align with your identity. This care is sometimes delivered through telehealth to your home.
• Fertility Preservation/Family Planning/Lactation Support: VA has services to help Veterans store eggs and sperm, as well as build and support families. These are coordinated through VA Women’s Health. Talk to your doctor about your options.
• Gender-Affirming Prosthetics: Several items are available through the VA when medically needed. These can include, but are not limited to, breast forms, chest binders, dilator sets for post-vaginoplasty, gaffs, packers, surgical compression vests, and wigs. Talk to your treatment team about what is right for you.
• Medically Necessary Hair Removal: Hair removal often happens through referrals to community-based centers. While availability varies, VA is working to improve access for all eligible Veterans.
• Letters of Support for Gender-Affirming Surgery (outside of VA): Some Veterans use their private health insurance or pay out-of-pocket for surgical treatments. Most surgeons and private health insurance companies require letters from your current treatment team, both medical and mental health (if applicable). VA providers can coordinate care with your surgeon.
While VA cannot yet provide initial gender-affirming surgical procedures, VA does provide surgical care for the following:
Some complications of surgeries, including revision surgeries for unexpected problems
Removing testicles or ovaries for hormone management if prescription hormones aren’t an option for you
Needed surgeries for other medical reasons (e.g., cancer, back pain) that are also consistent with your transition goals

2024.05.16 18:11 Payne_is_Temporary How to prevent smearing on shingles when installing?

I am helping bro in law put a roof on and we are getting in the 100s here. We start early when things are cooler which is no issue but as the sun beats down and it becomes warmer even at 10 or 11am, we run the issue of our boots causing the shingles to smear when we walk on them to install. The roof is about 7/12 pitch which I think could be a contributing factor but could our boots also be causing the issue? Any way to prevent or at least lessen the smearing instead of the just the obvious start when cooler?

2024.05.16 18:02 Psychedelic-chicken1 Aus2 is a shit hole now

Aus2 Is a shithole now
I transferred from sat2 to Aus2 4-5 months ago due to relocation. In the beginning Aus2 was amazing the building is clean, security is chill, safety was chill, productivity was amazing we were doing great I was happy to have transferred and regretted not doing it sooner at the time the head of our building was Lee shit was great under Lee , problems here and there but nothing with production or working conditions.
Fast forward these past 2 months this past month it’s been the absolute worst. Aus2 is on a downward spiral fasttt. We recently got a new replacement for Lee and a lot of us thought somehow we’d get even better.
I was severely wrong, in the past 2 months the amount of associates who quit is crazy due to prison like working conditions. Several departments got rolled out with new management and pa’s begging the question where did the previous ones ago ? The revolving door of new mangers I’ve had 4 in these past 2 months 1 of them managed to give me 4 write ups in a week I was only able to stay because I made my case to my senior ops manger and he made them go away because there was no basis for any one was a write up for not pulling all 6 of my totes forward like what ?
Another was for “activity not working because I was putting on the “home fishing” game on the fc game screen , etc. pack has gone to shit the the amount of missing items and quality errors through the roof, Am care stays filled with people with foot pain due to the new safety shoe enforcement and the taking away of the shoe covers so that we can wear our personal shoes with the required safety features and Ams are being short staffed and left to suffer I’m currently trained in 8 departments but I know how to do 10 so I travel around the building a lot and from department to department of id recorded what they were like 2 months ago and go back and record now it would be the equivalent to taking a picture of a beautiful blooming sunflower in the sun outside to a brown dead flower with 2 pedals locked in a cage ..that’s everyone at Aus2 now and I fully blame the New Gm.
The Gm is running that place into the ground and what I love is that she’s allegedly all about safely but I’ve seen more people get hurt since her new rollout of safety improvements than I have at any Amazon I’ve worked at but I genuinely feel sorry for pack, pack single, stow, decant, ship dock , iss, especially pick , man going to pick feels like you’re walking through a county jail not a smile in the place and one of the Ams stays going from department to department recruiting people to go to pick and lying about what’s it’s like I won’t even lie every time I see her I discourage every single person she talks too and I let them know how pick really is and what’s it’s like lol I started to rant my bad guys but yeah Aus2 is shit now we either need a new gm or I recommend leaving while you can because several years ago when those tiktok videos started rumors about how terrible it is to work an amazon and how shitty we’re treated is becoming a reality and it’s sad to see because Aus2 was great keyword was..
As for the ongoing headphone/safety shoe issue I cannot stress this enough ..liability waivers is how we get rid of that nonsense. Those who want to wear AirPods/non safety shoes in order to be comfortable and productive on a 12 hour shift should have the option to sign liability waivers forfeiting the right to sue Amazon or hold them liable if anything happens as a result. Pretty simple.
Thanks for coming to my rant, if you made it this far, I apologize for the grammar and punctuation. #BringBackLee <-our old gm

2024.05.16 17:52 throwaway_6605123 Raise cash for urgent home improvement

Throwaway so I don't dox myself.
So, just discovered our house has a serious damp problem, and it urgently needs addressed.
We own the house (well, it's mortgaged).
We can't borrow anything, for various non-related reasons, but we can't borrow from a bank/lender.
It's looking like it'll be around £10K to fix it.
Panic is setting in.
Family might be able to lend us some, but not all.
All our savings were spent last year fixing the roof.
We have approached a charity that works with my employer, but won't hear anything for several weeks.
We don't have anything of that sort of value to sell.
Any serious ideas to raise cash, some or part, that we might not have considered in our panic, would be most welcome.
Thank you.

Local Toyota dealership quoted me over 2k to replace this rubber gasket.
The car is a 2012 Prius. This gasket dry rotted and came apart. The reason for the cost is because Toyota doesn't sell the individual rubber gasket as a replacement part. If I want them to replace the gasket I have to buy a brand new panel. It is not a moving piece. My Prius does have a sunroof but that piece that is circled does not move.
What options do I have? Would removing the gasket cause me problems later on? It's currently unsightly and at higher speeds the rubber slaps the roof of my car.

2024.05.16 17:38 stratospaly Tesloid Tent review

Tesloid Tent review
I recently went on my first car camping trip with the Tesloid Tent. I had practiced with the tent at my home before hand and am glad I did. below is a review of my experience.
The good: Tent was quick to go up and come down, less than 10 minutes total setup and tare down time. It is dark, keeps the daylight out very well. It kept us dry though the wind or rain was not strong. There are only 2 tent poles, in the top of the tent holding the roof up. The holder for the tent poles is well thought out with Velcro. It folds up into an extremely small footprint bag.
The fixable: By tucking the tent into the back door and running 2 of the straps through the hinge of that door I was able to make a much better connection to the car, though that may cause excessive wear and tear on the tent. The T holders for the poles are brittle and one has already broken.
The Bad: There are already small worn holes in the tent after only opening it up 3 times. It is one thin layer so I fear it will wear out quickly and for a $500 tent that is not optimal. The bottom of the outer doors do not zip all the way, all 3 doors do not seal at the bottom, due to this wind opens them up, this tent is NOT good under 40*, even with the heat on in the car. My final bad thing is the connection to the car is poor. There are LARGE gaps that bugs fly straight into and into the tent\car. This can be mitigated somewhat with the above door thing and some strip magnets, but by the design of the tent there will never be a solid seal to the car. This and the open bottom of the doors has lead me to purchasing an MKCamp tent and keeping this one as a backup tent.
Overall car camping with the Y was fun, we learned quite a few things on the first trip, mostly that the 10-30 plug does NOT work at campsites, its for a dryer plug, campsites use TT30 which we need a dongle for. We also learned 30 amp 125v is not much faster than the 110 plug, always book a 50 amp campsite if possible. Also we learned to ALWAYS CHECK the campsite rules to ensure EV's can charge at the campsite. Apparently KOA have a blanket policy disallowing this, and one National park has done the same. Every other place I have checked has no problem with it.

2024.05.16 17:32 jinmustardman Curvy shingles

Curvy shingles
Is this a bad sign? Water is pooling on individual shingles. Looks like there is a little waviness in the roof there and the shingles are curved/cupped a little. This is over an open porch. The bit of waviness there is what worries me. Wondering if it’s rotten and swollen underneath. I’m in MA so ice could have easily gotten underneath with the pooling. I think the roof is 10ish years old? We bought the house 3 years ago. How worried should I be?

2024.05.16 17:32 Even_Cartographer968 GTA real estate will never go down

Put your pitch forks away and hear me out
1) everyone needs shelter, whether you rent or buy you need a roof over your head. We can’t simply not be part of the real estate market
2) where else would we live? Canada is the 2nd largest country yet how much of it is truly livable? We are so underdeveloped there’s only like 3 places ppl truly want to live and the GTA is one of them
3) I think people underestimate how much money there is in the GTA, just because YOU can’t afford a house doesn’t mean others can’t, that’s why houses are still selling no problem
4) all of you are frauds, everyone without a property complains about the housing crisis yet if they had a property they would be silent on the subject. The attitude so many Canadians have with housing is “well I got mine” and they leave it at that. Whether you want to accept it or not this attitude affects the housing market
Roast me, I know this will get heat. Hard truth but it’s the truth. How come in the last 2 years almost with high prices and high interest rates majority of housing prices stayed
Edit: also look up how many houses in the GTA are mortgage free, and imagine how many have mortgages under $250k. Truth is majority of the home owners don’t care about interest rates. It doesn’t affect Canada as much as you think. That’s why our mortgage default rate is minuscule

2024.05.16 16:53 n1247 Skoolie or van?

Hi,
I'm a first time buyer. Me and my wife are planning to live in a Skoolie (short bus or long bus) or a high roof extended van for 6 months of the year (in the summer). We can both work fully remote.
We would prefer to buy something that is ready built and make customisations as we go. We both have very little DIY/power tool experience so we would like to see how we get on making changes before committing to building something from scratch.
Our budget is 25-30k USD. We are not looking for "Instagram luxury". Just something that is comfortable, light and airy.
Main requirements:
We enjoy hiking in mountains so the vehicle has to be capable of driving up and down steep inclines. This has somewhat put me off buying a long bus with a lot of weight as I'm not sure if it would be suitable for these types of roads in the heat. I can only drive auto transmission. I'm a confident driver, however I have no experience driving larger vehicles. So a short bus or a van seems more realistic. I'm 6ft and my partner is 5.4ft.
Shortlist so far (within budget):
1992 International/Thomas bus - fully converted with 36,938 miles. Six cylinder International diesel/ Build looks amazing and it has so much space. Main concern is the weight and driving it on steep inclines. 31.5’ bumper to bumper 236” wheelbase 8’ wide 10’10” tall.
1991 Blue Bird bus - gorgeous bus. Looks pretty unique so might have re-sale value. Converted into a store so it has a nice open layout and furniture. Would leave me with little room in budget to add living requirements. Other concern is the 248k miles.
2002 Ford e450 skoolie - 7.3L powerstroke diesel. 185k miles on it. Fully converted to a high standard. Only problem is that it's designed for someone who is 5.9ft. So I won't be buying this one but I'm looking for other e450s as I've heard the 7.3L powerstroke diesel engine is reliable and the interior has enough space for what we want.
Alternatives: Dodge Sprinter 3500 (2008), Ford Transit 350 (2017), Ram ProMaster 3500 (2017-18)
Buses are more expensive to maintain and are less fuel efficient. The main benefit vs. a van is the space. If I can realistically drive on mountains roads then I'm all for getting a bus.
Any recommendations or feedback is much appreciated!

2024.05.16 16:28 amselina05 Life as a renter in Nashville

We rent a house because we were saving to buy, but like have yall seen the prices around here? Ridiculous, utterly ridiculous.
We pay a pretty penny for this house, so you expect some level of decorum when it comes to actually getting things fixed and respect. But alas, this is not what we've gotten, like at all.
So let me tell you this grand story.
The first 6-7 months were fine; did the landlord or property manager actually pay to get anything fixed that we asked them to? No. We asked them to fix the steps on the porch as they were rotting, what happened was they fixed 2 planks and left the rest to rot. When we told the contractor to fix the rest his reply was 'That would cost too much money for your landlord.' So they were left to rot until we no longer had safe access to our back yard.
In October the property manager and landlord said they were going to build a 4k sq ft addition to our backyard to create a duplex; we had only been here for 6 months. I told them that they cannot do that as it disturbs us and we are paying for the whole property, not just the house. (It would literally take away the entire back yard.) And it is also against our UDO. The landlord who owns the next door house as well just ignores us, because the other tenants are allowing him to do it.
I inform him that I have a child and work a fully remote job, probably should wait till I move. He ignored it.
He starts to build in both of the houses, and knocked down the fence in between the houses so the backyard is basically open now, the trouble is... he doesn't have a permit to build yet. There were a lot of issues and he just didn't care or pay attention.
I informed him that if he is going to do this that he has to do it legally, he basically calls me a dumb ass. And the property manager says that he probably knows better than me.
Fun fact I helped a friend run their district council person campaign and got to schmooze with the big wigs. I also went to law school, so what do I know against a man who is a psychiatrist for his full time job and then is trying to cash grab with two properties in his own neighborhood.
I contacted a friend who is on city council and has a lot to do with the planning and zoning. They get a notice to stop building. They rip it down the first time and then get a second notice.
In January we get a leak in our bathroom. I tell the property manager and she said the landlord would be over to look. They both proceed to tell us the leak in the middle of the roof is caused by the gutters and that we should be cleaning them. Well in the state of TN that responsibility falls on the landlord. I inform them that no, something is wrong with the roof. They leave the ceiling sagging and with water in it and leave us alone. I sent 3 more emails about this to them saying it's still leaking and them telling me it's my fault. I send them videos of the gutters being cleaned, yet it is sill my fault.
The landlords mother or mother in law starts coming onto our property without informing us within 72 hours like the least states and she starts stealing flowers from a rose bush we brought back to life. I inform the property manager that she is not allowed to be on the property as when we are renting it is our property and I will call the cops for trespassing if she does it again. It stops. for like a minute.
We are still dealing with the leaking roof and the steps have pretty much started to crumble. We have no use of our kiddo's bathroom by this point because the roof will absolutely fall in if we try to take showers in it. I get mad. Like really mad. This is the safety of my kid and family after all, like what if there is mold in there?
I start throwing legalese at her and she decides to blame me for gutters again, I send her a video and say it's not the gutters. (She claims the landlord has come by twice to clean the gutters when it's been once, we've done the rest and if he showed up without anyone telling us... that's again trespassing.) They finally send someone over, he pokes the roof and it crumbles. Said he was glad no one had taken a shower because they would have gotten hurt.
The landlord comes over with the PM and he says about the rotting wood 'what if we just staple plywood to it and then plaster it again.' Excuse me? The wood is still rotting and that's not how roofing works. Turns out the roof needs replaced and there are several gaps in the shingles causing this. Who would have guessed? Oh me. I told them that in January because it was blatantly visible, but what do I know I'm a woman.
The landlord looks at the steps and says 'we will fix it when the permit comes through and we start building, but we are having trouble with the permit.' Buddy at this point you're not getting that permit. My husband tells him 'the fk you will, we pay for that yard and we are using it. Fix the steps.'
I go off in the most professional way possible telling them that both of the major safety issues could have been solved and the liability lies with them, not us. the PM tells my husband 'you can just break your lease.' Which sends me to the very depths of hell of anger. I tell her no, our lease is for 10 more months and I'm not moving after only 14 months with a child. Also it doesn't matter if we move out, you need to fix this, it is literally your job that we pay you for. I know how much the mortgage is and I can tell you we pay them about 2.5k more than that.
I tell her that the two of them need to get their story straight because the lies are being recorded and I have everything on paper. I told them that I will record every conversation and anything out side of them being here will be done by text or email. I need her to know that the two of them have done illegal things.
They do not tell us when people are coming to fix things, they just start showing up at our door because 'I can't tell you in advance, you'll just have to deal with it.'
I tell her that if she brings up moving out one more time that we will do it for 14 months backpay and 6 months of rent to move and all of our deposits back, this does not make her happy, so I say if the landlord wants to sell to us since he cannot keep up with the upkeep, that's cool too. But why is he building on to the properties when he refuses to take care of the actual property themselves?
The landlord lives on our street and just stands outside of our house sometimes staring at us.
Fast forward to yesterday; the final straw. Found out that our landlord has never registered as a landlord the entire 14 months we've been here and 12 months someone was next door. I tell the PM that she should probably get on top of that as the city does not like that kind of behavior and that once again, she needs to get her story straight with the landlord. She said 'they'll fix your steps by the EOD and I have your safety at heart always.' Then why wasn't it fixed when I first brought it up?
The steps weren't done. The landlord is on the street while we are on our nightly family walk, husband goes and asks him what's up with the steps not being fixed. And he said "I'll remove them since you don't use them anyway." My husband goes off at him, he said 'We do use them we are asking you to fix them not take away all access to our yard!" And then the landlord says that the PM will handle it and he doesn't know who was measuring in our yard that day.
I send a text to the PM and relay that information and she said 'it will be done next week.' I say 'well you told us it will be done by the end of this week, so I expect that to still be the case.'
"I'll be there tomorrow, does that make you happy?" Enter me ranting about every illegal thing that they've done and quoting the sections of the law that goes with it and I said, no you are both just essentially slum lords trying to get more money by building more when you can't even take care of one.
She'll be here today and my husband is going to deal with her so I don't make this old lady and old man landlord cry, because I definitely am feeling that right now.
Additional notes:
The landlord asked 'how do you know all of these people.' when I said I spoke to the city council members and our neighbors on walks. My reply was 'that is absolutely none of your business.'
They resigned our lease and if they wanted us out why would they do that?
The bathroom roof is still not fixed and when I said we will need compensation for that part of our house they said NOTHING.
Every message that I've ever sent them has been professional and nice, now it's professional and stern.
I am just super mad and if it gets worse I will be calling out the landlord and the real estate company that the PM works at because this is ridiculous.

2024.05.16 16:16 pinkyjinks Which door colour?

Which door colour?
A family member is replacing the doors at their vacation home and is having trouble selecting which doors to go with.
The whole house needs to be repainted so he’s open to changing the look completely, or retaining the look. He also will be replacing the roof shingles
Option 1 -> Black and repaint the cottage darker
Option 2 -> putty and keep the colour close to what it is now.
Would love to get some opinions as I’m pretty stuck on this one!

I’ve had it easy And I’ve been blessed To only suffer the feeling For those with less And those with more Of the carnage of war That pounds unwelcome at their door That brings down the roof And scars the youth Of tens of thousands Who are used to playing Going to school And maybe just losing their first front tooth And now a hand And now a leg And now a parent And now a friend And now a family And now a future And now the vividness of sense Vanishing with their view And what happens then, I cannot say I only see pictures of their pain This I’ve understood That I have had it good Though I’m trained to think that I’m in need By the vulturous advertiser’s greed And my problems have all been imagined ones Internal battles with my own demons The battles of one’s own existence The persistence of my own resistance To such inevitabilities of life: Universal failures, strivings, strife That distract all us living from our dying But again there are the very many Whose peace must come among with plenty of things not other than agonies Nothing other than tragedies, And not of chance but travesty The contortions of humanity The results of the depravity Of those hearts that are but a cavity And callous to the gravity Of a single person multiplied By the millions more amplified By the screaming of each and all The loudness of unanswered calls The desperate wails that overcome The visions of the tons and tons Of bodies piling in the sun The former loved and loving ones No longer… looking like… Persons For evil ideologues there are calculations: Who can we trick into taking our side? Who can we get to fund our supplies? When can we erase them and begin renovations? What can we gain from this mass starvation? And this is what the killers think That flesh and blood And beings that breathe Have no value guaranteed Not to mention the truths perceived In years and years of life elapsed In the children’s futures and elders’ pasts No different than buildings collapsed And we all can see Though some deny And others turn away their eyes We all can think And know the lies Forget for a second our piece of the pie We all can hear The babies’ cries How many more are going to die? If you have the power it’s time to decide

Hi!
We just had an inspection on a house that we are purchasing, and it had revealed few water marks on the ceiling. I've never had this problem in the current home, so I'm not sure how bad these are. Could someone with any experience give opinions on this? Our guess is that it is either the roof damage or the water pipe dripping. The inspector flew the drone over the roof and found no visual damage on the roof tiles. FYI, the seller, a single man, was deceased, so there was no disclosure given whatsoever. Thank you for all the valuable opinions!

2024.05.16 15:58 jthrowaway-01 The daughters of Lot

Someone mentioned "all the horrors" in the old testament the other day, and it reminded me of something that has infuriated me for years. So, Sodom and Gamorrah, right, the story the Christians love to use to say it's evil to be gay, goes something like this:
The people of Sodom and Gamorrah were so evil (details conveniently unspecified) that god decides to destroy them. Abraham asks him to spare the city if he can find even 10 righteous people there, and god agrees. So two angels go down to investigate, and find only one "righteous" man, Lot, who invites them into his home. Then this happens, and my rage comes in at verse 8:
Genesis 19:4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”
6 Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him 7 and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”
He offers up his virgin daughters to be gang raped by an angry mob. This is a "righteous" man. This is the only "righteous" man in the whole city. I can never take any Christian argument about "sexual morality" seriously, because according to their holy book, it's good and moral to tell an angry mob to gang rape your daughters. Even as a devout youth that didn't sit right with me. As an adult I want nothing to do with a god who thinks Lot is "righteous", but has a problem with me transitioning or being bisexual.
