2024.05.16 17:17 CountChoculasGhost Buy vs Divvy

I’m new to the city and trying to be better at biking more places. I have a cheap shitty standard bike, but for longer rides it is just not the best.
I was considering getting a cheap-ish ebike, but now I’m second guessing myself and wondering if a Divvy membership would be worth it.
For some background, my wife and I both work remote, so we aren’t actively commuting. This would primarily be for going to occasional appointments and for fun (restaurants, just going for rides on the weekends, etc).
We have secured bike storage in our building but do have some concerns about security when locking up bikes elsewhere.
We also have 2 fairly well-stocked Divvy stations within a couple of blocks.
Our current thoughts are to do a year of Divvy to see how we like relying more on bikes and then maybe buy our own next year. But also considering just pulling the trigger on our own.
Any thoughts?

2024.05.16 17:14 goldnblue564 First Gaming PC - $2,500 USD Budget

Looking to upgrade to a PC from an Xbox Series X. I mostly play MWIII/Warzone and am looking to get the most frames possible in 1440p within my budget. I did an initial build on PC Part Picker - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rDGyz6
Any recommendations on better parts or if I should spend less in one area so I can spend more in another would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Is this a brand new build, or an upgrade to an existing build?
Brand new build
Please list any existing parts or monitor(s) you have that you would like to re-use with this build. For upgrades, a PCPartPicker list of your full build is extremely helpful. Be as specific as you can be here, including links or exact model numbers of each component whenever possible.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rDGyz6 is my initial build I put together. Currently using a Gigabyte M27Q monitor
What will this PC be used for? Examples include things like gaming, general/multimedia use, photo/video editing, coding, AI/ML, etc. Include specific games and applications you intend to run, and any particular performance goals you have, as each may have different specific hardware needs.
Gaming - MWIII & Warzone
What country will you be purchasing in? If you are in the US, do you live near a Micro Center? For other countries, please check if your country is supported by PCPartPicker by using the country selector dropdown on the top right - if not, please provide some links to reliable local vendors you are comfortable ordering from.
USA - I do leave near a micro center
Do you need one or more monitors included in the budget? Please list how many and any size/resolution/refresh rate preferences if needed.
No
What is your preferred and maximum budget range for this build, in local currency? Parts lists may sometimes have additional shipping costs. Please note whether prices in your country include sales tax or not, and adjust your budget accordingly. Typically VAT countries will have it included in the part list prices, whereas regular sales tax countries like the US and Canada will not.
$2,500 USD
Do you need WiFi, or do you have a wired ethernet connection available?
Wired ethernet connection available
Do you have any specific size or noise requirements for the build?
No
Do you have any aesthetic preferences for color or lighting? Describe what you're looking for, or feel free to provide some links to examples that may help. Some people prefer an inobtrusive stealth build, while others may prefer a case full of rainbow RGB.
None
Any other specific requests or requirements? Examples might include a specific minimum amount of storage, or a particular CPU socket for a future upgrade path, etc.
None

I'll primarily be using it for gaming (Triple A Games as well as games such as Lol, Overwatch, Valorant etc.) in 1440p. I do like the idea of being able to play on 4k eventually, however the main target for the time being is 1440p.
I've also tried to keep the build under 2k. How is it looking for everyone? Anything that could be adjusted?
Is a 850w too much for the pc and should I go for 750?
Appreciate the comments!

2024.05.16 16:53 n1247 Skoolie or van?

Hi,
I'm a first time buyer. Me and my wife are planning to live in a Skoolie (short bus or long bus) or a high roof extended van for 6 months of the year (in the summer). We can both work fully remote.
We would prefer to buy something that is ready built and make customisations as we go. We both have very little DIY/power tool experience so we would like to see how we get on making changes before committing to building something from scratch.
Our budget is 25-30k USD. We are not looking for "Instagram luxury". Just something that is comfortable, light and airy.
Main requirements:
We enjoy hiking in mountains so the vehicle has to be capable of driving up and down steep inclines. This has somewhat put me off buying a long bus with a lot of weight as I'm not sure if it would be suitable for these types of roads in the heat. I can only drive auto transmission. I'm a confident driver, however I have no experience driving larger vehicles. So a short bus or a van seems more realistic. I'm 6ft and my partner is 5.4ft.
Shortlist so far (within budget):
1992 International/Thomas bus - fully converted with 36,938 miles. Six cylinder International diesel/ Build looks amazing and it has so much space. Main concern is the weight and driving it on steep inclines. 31.5’ bumper to bumper 236” wheelbase 8’ wide 10’10” tall.
1991 Blue Bird bus - gorgeous bus. Looks pretty unique so might have re-sale value. Converted into a store so it has a nice open layout and furniture. Would leave me with little room in budget to add living requirements. Other concern is the 248k miles.
2002 Ford e450 skoolie - 7.3L powerstroke diesel. 185k miles on it. Fully converted to a high standard. Only problem is that it's designed for someone who is 5.9ft. So I won't be buying this one but I'm looking for other e450s as I've heard the 7.3L powerstroke diesel engine is reliable and the interior has enough space for what we want.
Alternatives: Dodge Sprinter 3500 (2008), Ford Transit 350 (2017), Ram ProMaster 3500 (2017-18)
Buses are more expensive to maintain and are less fuel efficient. The main benefit vs. a van is the space. If I can realistically drive on mountains roads then I'm all for getting a bus.
Any recommendations or feedback is much appreciated!

2024.05.16 16:51 Tears4Veers Help with navigating this process..

I’m currently living in an apartment building that I’m pretty certain is infested with bed bugs. We have seen them multiple times in our laundry room and I have notified the landlord plenty of times to see if we could get the building treated. I was basically told no and that if I wanted my apartment treated I needed to figure it out myself (even though it says in our lease our apartments will be getting annual checks for pests.. I have lived here for four years and this has never been done.. when I asked about this they said it was because of COVID.. it’s 2024..eyeroll). I tried to call an exterminator about a month ago to come in and check to get some piece of mind and maybe do a light treatment. The exterminator also said no because there were no signs of an infestation in our unit and that if it’s because of another unit it’s pointless.. okay then..
So then I went ahead and took the matter into my own hands and bought some diacotamis earth (spelling lol?). I figured this was working because I have never seen anything in our unit despite knowing there are people in this building who have it BAD.
Come a few days ago, I’m going to bed and happen to see a little tiny white bug crawling along our box spring. I freaked out and decided when I got home from work I was going to move our bed and sweep all around it & sweep our mattress/box spring. Once I started doing this I noticed these clusters of black marks all on our brand new box spring cover. My heart sank because I knew it was bed bug shit. I then lifted up our mattress and found found a bug & have basically lost it mentally after that.
I propped up our box springs and looked inside of them and didn’t see anything.. the clusters of shit were sort of all positioned on the side of the box spring that goes against the wall.. so I’m assuming they’re coming from the cracks between our wall and floors…
I did the diachotomis earth treatment again and moved our bed from against the wall. I vacuumed heavily, patched up a hole I found on our mattress when going to clean it, and bought a mattress case. I need to know what to do next.. I do kind of agree with the exterminator that it seems pretty pointless to spend money to treat if they’re coming from other units that obviously either cannot afford treatment (since our landlord isn’t going to do it) or just don’t care.. we are heavily heavily considering just moving at least just into my partners moms house and getting a storage unit for our belongings until we find somewhere new to live and we know our stuff is safe.. What are the best precautions when it comes to moving in this situation? We will more than likely be getting a new bed in the future at the least.
Also what are some tips for just being able to live everyday life with BBs? I was originallyqq really excited for this weekend bc my best friend is getting married, but now I just feel depressed and can’t focus on anything else.. idk how to go to work, be social or just relax in my home without worrying about this. I feel like my life is on hold..
TL:DR: our apartment has bedbugs that are more than likely coming from other units and our landlord won’t do anything about it. We want to move and I need some advice on figuring out the best strategy for that.

2024.05.16 16:29 phudaddy Decorating ships

I haven’t really done much ship building prior to the May update because I found it difficult to get enough credits. However, after coming into some wealth courtesy of a certain Jasper Kryx, I am planning to start.
I have a question about ship decorating though, related to resource access. How do you efficiently build items for your ship interior? When I’m with a city-based workshop such as in the Lodge, I can only access the limited resources carried on my character. When I’m in my outpost, I can access any resources present in that outpost’s storage. Then when I’m on my ship, I can only access what’s on my character again, even if my ship is parked at the city or outpost.
I guess the main question is - when constructing items to decorate your ship, what’s the best way to access the required resources? Do you just carry them back and forth on your character, or do you build the furniture/kiosks/etc and carry those into the ship?

2024.05.16 16:21 wawawawa Looking for Linux daily driver. Ultrabook-ish. 32GB. Working hardware and fingerprint sensor.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: - 1k to 1.5k EURO. This is flexible. I am in the Netherlands Are you open to refurbs/used? - I would prefer new. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? - Don't want 2-in-1. Ultrabook / lightweight style is nice. Battery performance >10h would be good also. How important is weight and thinness to you? - I'd like a Macbook Air or Pro style, but running Linux. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. - Currently have 13". Would be happy with 14 or 14.5". - I would like >FHD. So, 2K or even 4K would be preferred. Is OLED worth it over IPS? - I use 2x 4K monitors in my office. I have a Thunderbolt 3 dock. It would be nice if the laptop could drive both monitors at 4K via the TB (or USB-C) dock. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. - No heavy graphical stuff. - Mostly web browsing. Coding (Rust, golang, Python), maybe a VM or two. - In fact, I'd prefer not to have Nvidia or AMD discrete graphics. I think Arc would be fine. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? - I don't really plan to game on this. I have a workstation for that. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - I'd love a fingerprint reader that works with Linux - US keyboard is fine Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. - Lightweight, reasonably quick. Stylish looks. - I think screen is really important. Good quality, high resolution. I've been spoiled by macbook Retina screens. - I think I need more than 16GB - 32 GB would be good. - My current daily driver is a Dell XPS 13 (7390) with 16GB. - 1TB NVMe is enough for storage. - I use a Macbook Air M for work. I like to keep work and play separate. I prefer Linux over macOS. - The Acer Swift Go 14 and the ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED look interesting. But I think there's no Linux driver for the Acer fingerprint sensor.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

2024.05.16 15:37 phoenixcinder Rental builds shrinking

Been noticing this over the last few years is how much rental suite builds are shrinking. Right now I am building a garden suite. 2 tiny bedrooms, a small bathroom and a microscopic kitchen. That's it, no livingroom, zero area for storage. A perfect setup for a overworked underpaid wage slave who only has time to eat, sleep, shit and work. I have seen these tiny suites a few times now, anyone else noticing this?

Vladimir Putin has landed in Beijing for a two-day state visit, where he was greeted by Chinese leader Xi Jinping with a red-carpet welcome and a full military band. The trip will build on their commitment to the "no limits" relationship they signed at the Winter Olympics in 2022, just before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. As Russia becomes isolated from the West on the world stage, it has sought to boost trade in the East and elsewhere, helping prop up its economy in the face of sanctions.
Quote: "Relations between Russia and China are not opportunistic and not directed against anyone," Putin declared. "Our cooperation in international matters is one of the stabilizing factors in the international arena." Xi echoed the sentiment, adding that China will "work together to achieve the development and rejuvenation of our respective countries" and "to uphold equity and justice in the world."
Trade between the two nations has soared to record levels, rising 26% last year to $240B and hitting targets ahead of schedule. Russia has even overtaken Saudi Arabia as China's main oil supplier, while the latter sends back key commodities, vehicles and other consumer goods. Trade has also seen Russia's economy top expectations to expand by 3.6% in 2023, according to the IMF, despite Western efforts aimed at draining the Kremlin's war coffers.
Reaction? Wall Street Breakfast ran a survey last November, and again this week, on how the U.S. should manage its economic relationship with China. The biggest changes over the past six months showed that more subscribers have less faith in rapprochement and trade deals (24% to 15%), while a greater number believe decoupling and sanctions are the way to go (11% to 19%). It's noteworthy as Washington has recently threatened additional sanctions on Chinese banks and entities that handle Russian trade involving dual-use goods that can be used for both civilian and military purposes. How does all of this factor into your investing decisions? Join the discussion in the comments section.
Soft CPI Thought the Fed was only data dependent? Guess again. Data-centric traders celebrated in style after April's Consumer Price Index increased by 0.3% from March, easing from the +0.4% pace seen in the previous three months. The print, which meant inflation is still running well above the 3% level on an annualized basis, helped push Wall Street indices to new record highs, with the S&P 500 (SP500) crossing 5,300 for the first time ever. Meanwhile, retail sales came in flat, while regional business activity cooled further, suggesting the Fed could ease monetary policy earlier than expected. (119 comments)

Devs To Devs: How To Avoid Common Developers’ Mistakes On GitHub

The digital age is an age of opportunity. But along with opportunities come risks and problems. Developing modern software is a complex task that requires attention to detail and a wide knowledge of many aspects of programming. But even experienced programmers can make mistakes that can lead to a host of problems, such as bugs, performance issues, or security vulnerabilities. Let’s take a look at some of the most common mistakes developers make when working with GitHub. Whether you’re a novice programmer taking your first steps or a seasoned expert looking to improve your skills, this article should help you avoid common pitfalls when working with the popular version control system. With this knowledge, we should create better solutions that are reliable, efficient, and secure.
In recent years, GitHub has become an essential tool for developers to collaborate and manage source code. However, using this tool can also lead to some common developer mistakes that can have a significant impact on the development process. One of the most frequent problems is simply the improper use of version control. And this can lead to loss of code and, most importantly, to the waste of our most precious resource: time.
An example of a mistake is not regularly making changes to the repository, which leads to confusion and a lack of insight into the development process. In addition, failure to update repositories can cause merge conflicts. This is not a terrible thing, but on the other hand, poor management of code merge policies can lead to wasted time when resolving conflicts. We also need to be alert to the fact that improper handling of sensitive information in repositories can lead to security vulnerabilities. Being aware of such common GitHub errors is the first step in avoiding them, and with the right knowledge, developers can ensure that their code is organized, secure, and manageable.

Popular developers’ mistakes

None of us is infallible. However, the most common reason for developers’ mistakes is a lack of knowledge. Increasing awareness and proper education allow us to minimize risks and create better solutions. So let’s check out some common slip-ups that happen even to experienced programmers.
  • branch deletion
The risk may be associated with deleting branches, especially if they contain important code changes. Removal of a branch permanently erases all associated code, commits, and history, which in most cases cannot be restored. It’s important to carefully review the code changes and consider the potential risks before deleting any branches on GitHub. In addition, it’s a good practice to regularly back up code changes and ensure that important changes are properly merged into the main codebase.
  • removal of the old repository
Deleting the repository – on purpose or by mistake – could result in the permanent loss of this information if the repository was not properly backed up or archived. I don’t need to say that this can be quite dangerous to a project or organization. Additionally, if the repository contained any sensitive information, such as passwords or access keys, deleting it without properly securing or disposing of that information can put us or our organizations at risk of security breaches and data leaks. It is super important to carefully consider the potential consequences before deleting any old GitHub repositories.
  • losing a local copy
On the one hand, this point seems like a minor problem. After all, we have an external repository; we can create another local copy at any time and continue working. Apparently, yes, but even in this situation, we will lose some time (depending on the size and complexity of the project) to start the environment again. However, this is only a minor inconvenience.
A much greater risk, on the other hand, is when, for example, we create some PoC from scratch, checking certain things before we share or show our work to others. It may then happen that our local copy is the only existing version.
It doesn’t matter if this happens due to hardware failure, accidental deletion, or any other reason. The result can be the loss of important code changes, documentation, or any other project-related data. Subsequently, this can result in lost time and effort to restore lost work, missed deadlines, and potential damage to the organization’s reputation. If the repository has not been backed up to another device or cloud storage service, it may not be possible to recover lost data. And it will only be our fault.
  • hardware loss
This topic has already been partially covered above. Hardware failures can result in the loss of our local data. But after all, even if we are doing everything right on our local side, a failure can affect the external server that hosts our repository. A total failure of GitHub is unlikely to threaten us, but what about the situation when we host our repository on our own? Usually, we have a separate department or people in charge of administration for this, and it is not the responsibility of a programmer. However, in a small startup, who knows? We may be responsible for many things, and our own hosting can always fail, so we need to have a backup prepared for such situations.
  • problems with credentials or authentication
When working with GitHub, it is very important to ensure that access to repositories is properly managed and controlled. If credentials are compromised or authentication protocols are not properly implemented, unauthorized individuals can access sensitive information or modify code without proper permissions. This may have very serious consequences for companies, organizations, or individuals. To mitigate this risk, it is important to follow access control best practices, implement two-factor authentication, and regularly monitor access logs to detect any suspicious activity.
  • committed secrets
This is my “favorite” part. Unfortunately, it is still a very common problem. It usually concerns access to databases in various environments, but not only that. This may come as a surprise to many, but such a phenomenon is not only widespread but has actually been increasing in recent years! This is confirmed by reports such as ‘The State of Secrets Sprawl 2023′ by GitGuardian. For example, according to Cybernews, around 18K out of 30K investigated Android apps are leaking secrets! Not enough? One in ten GitHub users who made a push in 2022 accidentally exposed a secret.
This is doubly important in today’s IT world, full of cloud services like GCP or AWS. Such platforms charge based on the number of servers/requests etc. If we carelessly or ignorantly expose our cloud platform credentials we may end up consuming unplanned resources, and end up with a hefty bill for services we didn’t plan to perform. This is one of the most painful developer mistakes.
GitHub addresses this and provides a solution called “secret scanning.” It doesn’t solve the problem completely, but it makes it easier for us to control and track the accidental placement of secrets in our repositories. More about that tool you can find in GitHub Docs.
  • access control and protected areas
One of the key advantages of using GitHub is the ability to control access to repositories. Thanks to that, we can easily manage and restrict access to the code. At the repository level, we can set permissions to define who has read or written access to the code. This can be configured on a per-user or per-team basis, providing fine-grained control over who can do what in the codebase. In addition, we can also control access to specific branches within a repository, or limit who can merge changes or make modifications to certain areas of the code.
GitHub supports organization-level permissions, enabling centralized control over access to multiple repositories. This allows organizations to easily and effectively manage access at a higher level and ensure consistent permissions across all our repositories.
We can also control the access through the use of deploy keys, which allow for secure authentication and access to specific repositories or servers. This provides an additional layer of security, ensuring that only authorized individuals or systems can access sensitive code or data.
  • use of private GitHub accounts
The main problem with private accounts is that their use can lead to a lack of transparency and visibility of the code base. As a result, this makes it difficult for managers or other team members to track progress or provide feedback. Additionally, with respect to the aforementioned mistake, using private accounts can make it difficult to enforce access controls and security protocols, potentially leading to data breaches or other security issues. Using private accounts and/or not configuring them properly also leads to a lack of accountability, as it is more difficult to track who made changes.
  • leaving things out of repositories
This one is very common and also difficult to track. People sometimes treat the GitHub repository as a place only for storing their code. But what about graphics? What about the configuration? Source code is just one component of a project. Maybe the biggest, but not the only one. A complex configuration or setup required to build a project should be accompanied by documentation on the installation process and stored with the code. Otherwise, the code is useless if it cannot be built on another machine. Another point on our GitHub mistakes list.

Consequences of developers’ mistakes

The above list is just a sampling of some common developers’ mistakes when working with GitHub. Some of them seem so trivial that we are certain that we (or our employees) don’t make them, yet you can never be sure of anything. What is important is that our mistakes can have serious consequences, like accidentally losing some important piece of code or exposing sensitive information in a repository.
These errors can cause us a lot of damage. Let me point out “only” delays in project timelines, loss of productivity, or even compromise of the security of the project or exposure to ransomware attacks. Nowadays, it is very important for us and our customers to have some security certifications, so such situations are unacceptable. We don’t want our company or project to be found as an anti-pattern in reports such as GitGuardian. Therefore, every developer needs to take the necessary precautions, and do as much as possible to minimize the impact of mistakes on GitHub.

How to minimize risk

So what can we do in this situation? Of course, the first and most important step is to educate ourselves and become aware of the risks associated with the above errors and their consequences. A good knowledge of Git VCS technology is the foundation for avoiding popular Git errors. But it is not enough. Knowledge of the GitHub platform, and how to configure our projects and repositories, is another key issue. The aforementioned secret-scanning tool by GitHub or third-party tools like gitLeaks, for example, can be very helpful in avoiding such errors in our code.
Considering all the dangers and their potential consequences, it is crucial to have proper DevOps backup solutions in place, like GitProtect.io backup and Disaster Recovery software GitHubhttps://gitprotect.io/github.html. Being able to recover our data in case of any failure, regardless of the cause, is something essential in today’s IT world. Additionally, proper education on the use of GitHub and the risks associated with it can help us avoid common mistakes. By taking these steps, we and our teams can work more confidently and effectively with GitHub while minimizing the potential for mistakes and data loss.

2024.05.16 13:56 Aakarsh-Coding-223 Suggestion on my thinking process and my approach towards my future goal.

I just created a reddit account and earlier I used to surf reddit without having an account and used to stumble on this subreddit from time to time. I don't know how many people are going to read it but here is some information about me: My College: VIT Vellore (CSE Core) and I just gave my end-sem exams so now I will be a 2nd year student starting my 3rd sem in July. I have a long ass holiday till then. I am serious about my future and what I wanna do in my life. The only goal I have right now (be it positive or negative) is to earn money.. a lot of money so that I can gift my parents and my close friends all the good things that they deserve. I like giving people gifts and I wanna do it with my money. I don't know how good is VIT Vellore cse core ka placement. I currently have a gpa of 8.73 (jo first sem mein aai thi second sem bhi accha hi gaya hai ig). I have been through enough posts talking about vit vellore cse core ke placements where one talks about you will easily get placed in a 3-4L company or even 12-14L company which I don't want. I want to grow and earn more than that. It may sound childish or immature but I don't think it is bad to ask to earn more after putting in efforts that I am willing to put. So I decided to not think about my college ke placements and treat VIT as if it is a tier 3 college like amity noida where you don't really get placed and focus on myself to get a good off campus placements and an internship uske pehle.. Abhi my next goal is to get an internship as fast as I can.
My Plan: I haven't decided to give up on my studies in college. I will still study hard to make sure my GPA stays high so that if I want to go for masters in the US then I can do that without thinking about low grades in college. I will during my holidays dedicate my time to DSA and practicing uske questions on leetcode and all but apart from that I wanted to make my social presence so that people know I exsit and I contribute through my presence. I decided to work on a couple of projects (one big project and thre to four small projects) and then make youtube tutorial on how to make those projects and also create posts on the this subreddit and other subreddits (that I dont know about.. would love to know if there is another subreddit like this) where I share my progress report on how far I have come on these projects. I think if I do all of these then they will make my stand out of the crowd and help me get placed as an intern pehle and then a full time employee in a good company and also help me build a strong profile if I want to go to the US for my Masters.
My Projects; The big project that I have decided to work on is a cloud data storage project. I haven't seen any tutorial on how to make it so I guess I will be the first person doing it and then uploading the tutorial on the channel and then other three to four projects that I currently don't have any idea about.
How the project will go: The user will have a web ui where they will be able to transfer files and I will check if the server and database (which in this case will be my laptop) is online or not (so if the laptop is on or not).. if it is then I will transfer the files from the user's device to my laptop's ssd partition with them being encrypted of course so that I also get to practice the concept of encryption. This is what I have thought and before proceeding I would like for everyone here reading this post to give me their opinion if they think I am on the right track or is this just another way to waste my time.

2024.05.16 13:18 Pin-Adept [Repost] Looking for a replacement for a 4th gen i5 dell work horse for PhD work- Mac Air and alternatives

Basically I have been planning to buy a new laptop for the remainder of my PhD term for writing, markup and massive PDF and Youtube use. I am currently using a 2015 model Dell 5550 8gb i5 4th generation model. The magnificent machine is still pulling some muscle, but it has seen its prime. I am basically clocking 7gb of ram on an average use in it. Pretty much this new laptop is to be my office space up until the first pay hike at job down the line. So I am quite serious about future proofing it. I've always wanted to make a move to apple after the M1 buzz, despite never getting around to it though. Moreover I have been putting this away for long that looking for an intel alternative is a bit overwhelming now. However I am open to considering all possible permutations and combinations. Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. : $1500 US (upper limit, can be lower too) Are you open to refurbs/used?- No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Battery life, Robust build, light weight How important is weight and thinness to you? Highly Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. around 15 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Zotero, Visual coder, QGIS If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? nope Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? everything must be able to take a beating. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. 2024.05.16 13:03 ObviousBudget6 How can you 'retain' a message/task in the Cloud for X amount of days?

Im building an app where you type a task you need to get done in the future, you select the date you want to be reminded of this task, and you insert your email where you want to receive the reminder.
I´m trying to do the whole backend with Google Cloud since I have free credits and I wanted to learn cloud technologies.
I am wondering how could this would be achieved.
An idea I have:
  1. Create a cloud function where you receive the data from the front end via API call (Done)
  2. Save this data inside a storage bucket (Maybe it would better be Database?)
  3. Set up a cron job to activate another Cloud function that checks each day each task if the current date of that day matches the date desired of the reminder.
  4. If it does send the email. And delete the task.
The 3. Step seems not efficient at all. (Having to check every task every day and having to run through the whole database/buckets). I am wondering if there is another way to do it more efficient.
Maybe something can be done with the Pub/Sub service but I lack the clarity to see how could this be achieved.

We will take you through each step to ensure you have the best chance of restoring your precious memories. Ready to get started? Let’s dive into the recovery process.

For Windows Users - using free build-in tools

The first method to retrieve recently deleted photos on a Windows PC is by using the built-in tools. These tools are readily available and can be accessed easily on your computer. They include the Recycle Bin, File History, and Windows File Recovery tool. Let’s dive into the detailed steps on how to use each of these tools to recover your precious memories.

Check your Recycle Bin first

In most cases, deleted photos are sent to recycle bin directly. You can easily see your deleted photos in Windows Recycle Bin.
Tips:When you delete photos using theShift + Delcommand, they bypass the Recycle Bin. To recover these files, consider usingdata recovery softwareor check if you have a backup available.
Step 1: Checking the Recycle Bin
If you have recently deleted photos from your computer, the first place to check is the Recycle Bin. This is a temporary storage location where deleted files are kept base on the settings on Windows(users can adjust settings that affect how long items remain in the Recycle Bin). If you have not cleared your Recycle Bin, there’s a high chance your photos are still there.
Windows Recycle Bin Versions
Step 2: Opening the Recycle Bin
To access the Recycle Bin, double-click on the icon on your desktop or open the File Explorer and select “ Recycle Bin ” from the left menu.
Step 3: Restoring the Photos
Once you have opened the Recycle Bin, browse through the files to find the photos you want to recover. You can use the search bar at the top to search for specific photos. Once you have located the photos, right-click on them and select “ Restore ” to bring them back to their original location on your computer.

Using File History(Previous Versions)

If the photos you want to recover were stored on your computer’s hard drive, you can also use the File History feature to retrieve them. Keep in mind that this method only works if you had enabled File History at the time the photos were deleted.
Step 1: Open File Explorer and navigate to the folder where the deleted photo was located.
Step 2: Right-click on the folder and select “ Properties ” from the drop-down menu.
folder properties
Step 3: In the Properties window, click on the “ Previous Versions ” tab.
Folder Properties
Step 4: If available, you will see a list of previous versions of the folder with their timestamp and size. Select the version you want to restore and click on the “ Open ” button.
This will open a window showing the contents of the selected version. From here, you can copy and paste the deleted photos to a new location on your device.
After the process is complete, you should be able to find your deleted photos in their original location. If you have disabled System Protection or if your device ran out of disk space, there may be no available backups to recover from. You may find out how to enable file history here .
Tips: It’s important to note that the Previous Versions feature is not a guarantee for file recovery. It is only available if System Protection is enabled and if a previous version of the file is available.

Using Windows File Recovery Tool

If the above methods do not work, you can also use the Windows File Recovery tool to retrieve your deleted photos. This tool is available for Windows 10 and allows you to recover deleted files from your hard drive, external storage, and even SD cards.
Tips:This method is only available for Windows 10(ver:2004 or above)/11 users.

Step 1: To begin using the Windows File Recovery tool, open the File Explorer and navigate to the folder where your deleted file was located. You can also search for the file by name using the search bar at the top of the File Explorer window.
Step 2: Once you have located the folder or file, open the Command Prompt by pressing the Windows and R keys on your keyboard, typing “ cmd ” into the Run dialog, and pressing Enter . Alternatively, you can right-click on the Start menu and select “ Command Prompt ” from the list.
Command Prompt
Step 3: In the Command Prompt, type
winfr source: destination
and press Enter . The source refers to the drive where the deleted file was located, while the destination is where you want to recover the file to. For example, if you want to recover a file from drive C and save it to the desktop, you would type
winfr C: C:\Users\YourUsername\Desktop
Step 4: The tool will start running in either regular or extensive mode, depending on the size of the file and the current status of the drive. It may take some time for the tool to finish scanning and recovering the file, so be patient.

For Mac Users - Using Built-in Utilities and third-party apps

Built-in Utilities

Time Machine: The First Line of Defense
For Mac users seeking to retrieve deleted photos, Time Machine stands as the premier built-in utility. To access it, connect the drive where your backups are stored, click on the Time Machine icon in the menu bar, and choose “ Enter Time Machine “. From here, you can navigate back to the date before the photo’s deletion and click “ Restore ” to recover your image. Ensure you have Time Machine set up and running before any data loss occurs.
https://preview.redd.it/buewfjvmsr0d1.png?width=321&format=png&auto=webp&s=c5e0ea778c5c1ea9dd73b3c85c2f5a6aa38b542f
Retrieving from the Photos App
The Photos application on macOS, replacing older apps like iPhoto and Aperture, also offers a safeguard against accidental deletion. Within the Photos app, deleted pictures are moved to the “ Recently Deleted ” album where they stay for 30 days before permanent removal. To restore, simply select the desired photo(s) and press “ Recover “. The chronological library and the ability to sort into albums make managing and retrieving your photos straightforward.
https://preview.redd.it/z14psipnsr0d1.png?width=767&format=png&auto=webp&s=f5261d684dee6e2963efb3bffe392a3fdc64682d
Utilizing Photo Booth for Recovery
In instances where you’ve used Photo Booth —a camera application that comes standard with macOS—deleted photos might be recoverable if they were recently removed. Check the app’s library for thumbnails of saved images, as they may still be present. Although recovery options within Photo Booth are limited, the thumbnails provide a quick visual reference for recently captured images that may have been deleted elsewhere on your system.

Third-party apps/service

Third-Party Data Recovery Software
When built-in options fall short, Mac users can turn to third-party software such as Undeleter , Disk Drill or PhotoRec for more robust recovery capabilities. These applications perform deep scans and can often recover files that are no longer visible to the user. They operate on the principle of file signatures, allowing them to identify various data types, including photos, and attempt to restore them. Remember to halt all use of the storage device immediately after data loss to prevent overwriting your deleted files.
https://preview.redd.it/8h9qn95psr0d1.png?width=875&format=png&auto=webp&s=1439161ffe9afca04fd1f6eb5d2bcb76b1411311
Professional Data Recovery Services
If all software-based methods fail to yield results, and the photos are irreplaceable, seeking professional data recovery services may be the next step. Despite being more expensive, these services provide specialized recovery techniques, particularly in cases of physical damage to storage media, offering the highest probability of retrieval for your valuable memories.
Tips:Ensure Time Machine is set up and runningbefore any data loss occurs.

For iPhone/iPad users

Understanding the “Recently Deleted” Album
On an iPhone, deleted photos first move to the “Recently Deleted” album within the Photos app. They remain there for 30 days, providing an immediate recovery option without the need for additional software. During this period, you can simply select the photos and tap “Recover” to restore them back to your main library.
https://preview.redd.it/jvce0weqsr0d1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=11e8d7c52018ef08109e174f56982154e104238a
Tips:It’s crucial to understand that photos in the“Recently Deleted”album are permanently erased after 30 days or if the album is manually cleared.
Seeking Third-Party Data Recovery Solutions
When the “Recently Deleted” album is no longer an option, specialized software like Renee iPhone Recovery , Dr. Fone, iMyFone Data Recovery, and PhoneRescue can help. These tools attempt to recover lost data from deep within the iPhone’s storage. Although results can vary, many of these programs offer a preview feature to identify recoverable photos before purchase.
Recovering from Other Devices and Cloud Services
If third-party tools fail, check if the lost photos exist on other synced devices such as an iPad or a Mac . Cloud services like iCloud are also worth exploring, as they may have automatically backed up your photos. Additionally, images shared on social platforms may serve as an inadvertent backup.
Tips:Access your account via icloud.com in a web browser and log in with your Apple ID. Click onPhotos, thenRecently Deleted. This folder, much like theTrashin Google Photos or the Recycle Bin in Microsoft OneDrive, keeps deleted photos for up to30 days. Select the photos you want to recover and click Recover, and they will reappear in your iCloud Photos Library and on all devices with iCloud Photos enabled.
Considering Professional Data Recovery Services
While professional data recovery services can sometimes salvage photos that software cannot, they come at a significant cost and with no success guarantees. Such services should be a last resort, typically for irreplaceable photos, and it’s advisable to inquire about the likelihood of recovery before committing.

For Android Devices Efficiently

In today’s digital age, we use our smartphones to capture and store our precious memories in the form of photos. But what happens when we accidentally delete these photos? Thankfully, there are ways to retrieve them on Android devices efficiently. In this chapter, we will guide you through several methods to recover deleted photos on your Android device.
Step 1: Check Your Google Photos Trash
If you use Google Photos to back up your photos, then your deleted photos may still be in the trash for up to 60 days. To check, open the Google Photos app, tap on the three lines in the top left corner, and select “ Trash ” from the menu. If your photos are in the trash, tap on them and select “ Restore “. This will move the photos back to your main library.
https://preview.redd.it/nsm726tssr0d1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=f4c2f1726e0779954978bdbc5e168de91421c1de
Step 2: Use Your Device’s Gallery App
If you have deleted a photo from Google Photos, but it’s still on your device, then you can use your device’s gallery app to delete it. Simply open the gallery app, find the photo, and delete it. This will permanently remove the photo from your device.
Step 3: Try OneDrive Recycle Bin
If you have OneDrive backup set up on your Android device, then you can try recovering your deleted photos from the recycle bin. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Open OneDrive on your device.
  2. Tap on the three lines in the top left corner and select “ Recycle Bin “.
  3. Find the deleted photo and tap on it.
  4. Tap on “ Restore ” to move the photo back to your main library.
Step 4: Remove SD Card and Connect to a Computer
If you have photos stored on an SD card and they have been deleted, you can try recovering them by removing the SD card from your device and connecting it to a computer. You will need a card reader to do this.
Step 5: Use Data Recovery Software
If all else fails, you can try using data recovery software to retrieve your deleted photos on your Android device. There are many options available, but do thorough research and choose a reputable and reliable software to use.
Tips:Most third-party data recovery software necessitates rooting your Android phone prior to initiating the scan process. It’s important to be aware that rooting can void your manufacturer’s warranty and potentially disqualify your device from official repair services.
By following these techniques, you can efficiently recover deleted photos on your Android device. But what about lost photos on digital cameras or storage devices? Continue to our next chapter to learn about “Method 5: The Strategy of Recovering Lost Memories from Digital Cameras Storage” and the potential reasons why an SD card may lose data.

Recovering Lost Memories from Digital Cameras Storage

Storage media like SD cards are indispensable for digital cameras but can succumb to many forms of data loss, such as accidental deletion or card corruption. Water, heat, and even seemingly innocuous actions like ejecting the card during a write process can compromise the integrity of the data. For instance, exposure to moisture not only risks electronic failure but can also lead to data corruption, affecting the stored images on the SD card .
Immediate Response to Data Loss When data loss is detected, the initial response is critical. Ceasing all operations on the digital camera’s storage device is paramount. Users should avoid capturing new images or attempting to access the card with other devices, which can lead to overwriting the lost data, rendering it irrecoverable, data only appear to be gone but are actually waiting to be overwritten.

Preventive Measures: Tips to Avoid Future Photo Loss and Secure Your Memories

While it’s great to have methods for recovering deleted photos, it’s always better to not lose them in the first place. The recovery process may not always be successful, and it’s time-consuming. To avoid the stress of lost images, here are some preventive measures you can take:
Step 1: Regularly Back Up Your Photos
Protect your memories by regularly backing up photos using built-in utilities, third-party tools, or cloud services. Choose a weekly or monthly schedule and promptly back up new images after events or before system updates. Windows users can use File History, and Mac users can use iCloud for security.
Step 2:Create multiple partitions.
Organize photos into dedicated folders or create separate partitions on your storage device to minimize accidental formatting and allow space for backups, enhancing photo protection.
You can use Disk Utility on Macs to create multiple partitions on your external hard drive.
Step 3:Never write new photos to the same place as lost images.
If you’ve accidentally deleted photos, it’s important to stop using the device or storage media that contained the lost files. This is because the data is still physically on the device until it is overwritten. If you continue to use the device, you risk overwriting or corrupting the lost files, making it difficult to recover them.
If you’ve accidentally deleted photos from your camera’s SD card, remove the card and do not use it until you’ve attempted the recovery process.
Step 4:Auto-upload photos to the cloud.
Many devices have the option to automatically send your photos to the cloud, providing a backup that extends beyond your device. This eliminates the need for manual backups and offers additional storage space through your cloud provider. Popular services like Google Photos and iCloud make it easy to store and access your photos.
You can enable auto-upload for your photos on your iPhone through the iCloud settings.

Conclusion

Photographs are precious memories, and losing them to deletion or technical issues can be devastating. Our guide helps you recover lost photos from various devices, explaining the “recently deleted” folder and providing step-by-step recovery instructions for Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, and digital cameras. We highlight tools like Renee Undeleter for easier recovery and offer tips for backing up and managing files to protect your photos. 10 years later, Bingo's Dining and Entertainment re-opened after the now new owners got ahold of the remains of the Buttercup animatronic and it's endoskeleton, but it was re-opened as Buttercup's Grill & Entertainment due to them no having the rights to the original name, as an entertainment and restaurant joint made for literallyw everyone to enjoy. The building was then redesigned, with the lobby doors and windows being barricaded, as a new lobby was built for their redesign of the location...
The other animatronics were all rediscovered during the clean up before the redesign of the location... And they were tidied up and ready to use once again. But there was an incident, apparently Citrus extended his wings while a little girl was hugging him, causing them to puncture through the kid and kill her... This then made people think that the animatronics from Bingo's were dangerous, and they were later ordered by the law to decomission all of the animatronics.. other than Buttercup and Lizzy. The new owners were then forced to destroy the animatronics. To make up for this, they then built Caesar, a very fiesty, yet safe wolf animatronic, with the purpose of him performing alongside Buttercup.
Decommissioned Bingo, Decommissioned Blossom, and Decommissioned Citrus are all locked away in the barricaded lobby......
NIGHT 1 - Hey, are you there? Yes, yes. You were the security guard at.. the old place. The Authorities have deemed you the perfect candidate for the investigation of this place following.. what happened to her. You know, the girl? I need you to just.. write down everything that happens over the next 5 nights, and we will reward you a few thousand dollars for your time. About $5,000. But you will get absolutely nothing if you do not complete this investigation. Listen. Everything should go smoothly, and you should be safe. But if you feel unsafe, you should have a console near you, right? That controls the computer in front of you, on your desk. You can monitor the building's 11 different cameras freely, and you can even mess with the building's ventilation systems.. They have silent ventilation that you can enable at any time, but it will affect your monitor's power. Now, there is a door on your left, a door on your right, and a hallway in front of you, correct? Just checking. I'll leave you alone now, but I will reach out again tomorrow night.
Buttercup and Caesar are now active. If Buttercup is at one of your doors, close it quickly. Caesar is very sensitive to sound. Activating silent ventilation will usually make him leave if he appears in your hallway.
Your monitor is on a very limited power supply. It starts with 100% Power, but it loses 1% every 8.5 seconds. For each usage increasing action, it starts to go down 33% faster.
All usage increasing actions are having your monitor on, having silent ventilation activated, and having the camera's red light on.
The building is very dark, so it is recommended to activate the red light on the camera that you are on in order to see much, much better.
All 11 of the cameras are the Show Stage, Dining Area, Main Lobby, Lobby Office, Left Corridor, Right Corridor, Center Hallway, Kitchen, Dance Floor, Storage, and the Old Lobby (camera disabled until night 3). The red light on the Old Lobby Camera flickers quite frequentlye, but it iss on random patterns.
NIGHT 2 - Hey, I see that your first night of investigation went well. See? I told you it wouldn't be a problem! Anyway.. I heard that they have another animatronic that they recently built being held in the storage room.. I suggest that you monitor that one, as well... We have upgraded your monitor to have more control over the building's ventilation system, allowing for you to now activate Maximum Ventilation. It maximizes the power of the vents, but it can also make quite a lot of noise. And yes, this will affect your monitor's power supply. Anyway, I have to go.... But I will keep in touch. Take care.
Another brand new animatronic, Chuck The Woodchuck, has been activated. If you hear a scratching sound, deactivate Silent Ventilation if it is active, and activate the Maximum Ventilation, which will create a lot of noise, scaring Chuck away and most likely luring Caesar towards you in the process.
NIGHT 3 - Hey! We received your report of nights 1 & 2, and we are.. quite concerned, to say the least. They activated and tried to get into the security office? We might just reward you with all of the money for the risk and pull you out now... But this is important! Here, how about this? Finish your last 3 nights.. and we will double your pay. How does that sound? I hope that you can--
Decommissioned Bingo, Blossom, and Citrus are now active. If you spot Citrus flying into the camera, switch cameras immediately, otherwise he will crash your monitor and keep it turned off for about 6.5 seconds.
If Bingo gets into your office from the hallway, turn off your lights asap.
If Blossom gets into your office from the hallway, turn off your lights asap.
NIGHT 4 - Hey! We did get your report, and... I'm sorry. But how? How are they activated? I thought that they were locked away and decommissioned? We ordered that. By law! I'm pulling you out of there tonight, just survive until then! We ordered a lockdown, so you cannot get out, and nobody can get in.. But we will break in, as we have the authority to, and we should have you out of there by 9 AM. An hour longer than usual, I know, I know. I wish that we could do it any sooner. But truthfully, lockdown does end at 6 AM. Just leave then, to be safe. We are going to have those animatronics completely scrapped by tomorrow. Don't you worry. Good luck. I'll see you soon, okay?
NIGHT 5 - Hi there. You may have heard of me before. I am the owner of this establishment. I do not like what you have been doing.. And now, you know too much. And you will not make it out of there alive tonight. Where is your little officer friend, you may be asking? Well, we took him, too... He is locked away in.. a secret room. If you ever at any point try to leave, I will shoot him.
6 AM PHONE CALL - Hey! Hey! Hey! Can you hear me? Oh, thank goodness! It's me! I escaped! He went to go tweak the animatronics, and to make them.. well, only so much more deadly. You need to get out of there, okay? We will surround the place, and send him to where he belongs, behind bars. But I have to run all the way to the station, and then it takes us time to get there, and we should be there around 8 AM... I'm sorry, okay? You can do this. You have to. If you want yourself to live, of course.
NIGHT 6 - It's safer now, don't freak out. We have him locked up behind bars, and we have completely just dismantled Buttercup, Caesar, and Chuck. However, those older ones might not be happy.. So expect some serious aggression from them tonight. We just need you to collect some data.. Especially after what happened yesterday, you know....?

2024.05.16 11:59 IndependentHat1177 First PC Budget of $1500- 1800 CAD

  1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.
I want to play Balders Gate 3 as well as some other new releases, and also set it up for emulation. I also want to throw in some controllers and hook it up to the tv for couch co-op, I won't be streaming anything.
  1. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?
$1500-1800 CAD
  1. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
The timeline doesn't matter too much to me but probably a week or 2 after finding a parts list that meets the budget.
  1. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: toweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Tower, OS, wireless mouse, wireless keyboard.
  1. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.
No reused parts.
  1. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?
Maybe down the line but definitely not right away.
  1. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSDs, mass HDDs, Wi-Fi / Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc.)
I hear SSD is good. Wifi for sure, maybe Bluetooth if it doesn't skyrocket the price. A good amount of storage space would be great, I'm not sure what's overkill or not maybe 2tb?
  1. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-towefull-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Not necessary but if possible orange or color changing lights or trim but black for the rest of the case
  1. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free at OnTheHub or through their school's IT software distribution department.
Windows 11
  1. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?
Not for a long time
  1. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc.)
AMD
  1. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.
No
  1. Extra info or particulars:
I think that's everything, my experience when it comes to PC building is zero so thank you in advance to whomever can help.

2024.05.16 11:00 estakinator Buying storage for an older system

Hi, I’m looking to get a new storage drive for my 5 year old pc, but I’m having trouble deciding what type and capacity to get. My existing drives are getting full, so I’m looking to get something to hold me over until I do a major pc upgrade in the next couple years. My main uses are gaming (indie or older triple A) and video editing in davinci resolve. I’m not too picky about game load times, but I would like to avoid being bottlenecked in editing.
I’m not sure how I should go about things, these are some questions I have:
Should I get a high capacity HDD for bulk storage with a low capacity SSD for active video projects, or should I just go with a mid sized SSD and store everything on there?
For SSDs, should I go with sata or m.2? I understand there is going to be a speed difference but I can’t really figure out if there is a major difference in reliability or price.
What is the SSD market like right now? On pcpartpicker it seems like prices have risen about $10 CAD per TB since the start of this year, is that a lot?
My understanding of m.2 is that it uses pcie lanes, will my graphics card interfere with this?
My budget target is $100 CAD. less is better, but I’d be willing to spend a bit more if it made sense. I’d like at least 1 TB of total space. With my data fill rate, It'd probably last me another 2 years which is what I'm looking for. Also, I’m not concerned about carrying this drive forward to my next build, I just want something that works well for my current needs.
These are some drives I’ve looked at thought might be good, but for a lot of the ssds, I’m concerned about reliability https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/useEstakinatosaved/42398d
This is my current system https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/useEstakinatosaved/JR6p8d
Thanks for the help!
