Roadside THC tests - pls help me understand if I've got this right

2024.05.15 08:40 dyingtrying46 Roadside THC tests - pls help me understand if I've got this right

Hey y'all! I know there are mutiple posts on this already, so if you find this too repetitive, I apologize and hope you will scroll by.
I was reading this CBC article and they seem to have done a pretty decent job explaining what is going on, so help me understand why is there so much anxiety over these tests. I'll put what I took from this article in points, if I'm wrong, please do correct me.
  1. Police are stopping drivers based on what they think is suspicious behaviour or if they smell weed on you or in the car.
  2. They are doing roadside screening tests and the devices are set at a limit of 25 ng/ml. So if you are over that threshold, you fail the test. It's a pass or fail test.
  3. If you fail the swab test, it means fines, license suspension, car impounded, re-take alcohol course.
  4. If an officer asks for a blood test (which they apparently very rarely do because it's a whole different and time consuming process), then they are tested on the federal limit of 2-5ng/ml in an individual's bloodstream.
  5. The roadside tests are in place to check recency of consumption, not impairment. So, if you are above the 25ng/ml limit, they say you have recently consumed THC.
Separate point that I heard from friends: THC in our saliva spikes after recent use but goes below the 25ng/ml limit after a day or few hours depending on level of consumption. So you can essentially pass the swab tests but not the blood tests.
I know many people use it for medical purposes, and many just for recreation. A lot of them may not be high after 6-12 hours, but some still may be. So are we challenging this generalized testing method and if so, what are our alternatives?
Genuinely curious here about these:
Now, if the devices are faulty or if there is no fair play, then yeah, that's a whole other matter.

2024.05.15 05:45 lovablemonsterk Umbilical hernia surgery from hell

24f
Went and had hernia repair with mesh this past Friday, hernia was about 4.0cm and they used medium mesh. I developed severe vomiting after surgery and ended up in the ER the same evening after my surgery with my bloodwork and dehydration ended up admitting me for 2 days. My CMP came back with CO2 at 14 & CBC had WBC, RBC, Hemoglobin & Hemograit all high. I was given 5,000mL of fluid continously (per chart I had read the amount) and I kept breaking out into severe welts all over. In recovery they did max me out with nausea medicine and pain medicine (Dilaudid)
I was sent home with a prescription of Norco around 1pm and the ER happened around 530pm that same day. I couldn't stay awake, keep wateice down. The welts happened around 5, covered my arms, legs, chest, stomach. They assumed it was Norco allergy, I never took it at home. Only thing at home I had taken was tylenol 500mg. They ended up giving me benadryl, Epi pen shot and steroids through my iv in the ER before admission. I have been getting the welts daily now and on benadryl since. My arms feel like they're burning inside.
When they happened the first time they didn't itch Now they itch badly when they come on severe which they take about an hour to cover me.
The medication I'm on;
Eliquis 5mg Vit D 50,000 units 2x week Lamtical 150mg Wellbutrin XL 300mg Iron 324mg Cozaar 25mg
After being discharged they also have me using; A Z-pack of Predisone. Toradol as needed for pain (after lots of caution because of my blood thinner, they gave me toradol the entire admission through IV) OTC benadryl & Pepsid
I'm losing my mind. I don't know what to do at this point with the welts and living on benadryl isn't realistic. Is it my blood thinner causing a reaction?

2024.05.15 04:43 sunnydaize Help with feline X-rays showing calcifications

Hi there, never been to this sub before but I am very upset about my sweet baby (7, 8 in June, male shorthair orange cat, neutered, weight in post here, no significant medical history and we are in the Midwest US) who is very sick.
About 2.5-3 months ago he stopped eating his dry food, I stupidly assumed he just didn’t like it anymore, so I changed it out. He didn’t really like that one either. I started giving him wet food around 1x/day and brought him to a vet to see if he was ok (March 18). The doc said he had ear mites and dirty teeth and probably needed a teeth cleaning but gave him clavamox and bravecto as well as a FeLV/FIV test which were both negative. At this time I discovered he had lost 2 lbs out of his 12 lbs he had weighed two years prior at his last vet visit.
Second vet visit(April 9): he’s lost more weight, and now he’s having diarrhea which I had attributed to the medications and change to wet food. This time he was given kenalog, convenia and Albon liquid. They also ran a CBC which only showed elevated white blood cells, everything else was within range. He had also started scratching A LOT around his ears and neck and doing a weird leg shake with both of his back legs.
Third vet visit (late April): went to a different vet, this time they gave him a steroid injection and said they wanted to re-run bloodwork if he showed no improvement. The steroid injection seemed to help his itching but within a week his whole belly was hairless and the inside of his legs as well, and his neck looked like a lion cut there was so much hair missing. We also noticed his urine was dark brown so we took him in again.
Fourth vet visit(around 2 weeks ago): scratching is getting worse and urine is very brown, they did a urine pull (not sure what you call that) and said he had a UTI based on blood in the urine, started him on another round of antibiotics and prescribed a supplement to help his diarrhea (dasuquin) as well as revolution plus and douxos3 for his paws which hd a foul smelling greasy brown substance on them and are inflamed. They are still inflamed and virtually hairless :(
Fifth vet visit (yesterday): still getting worse and now he’s down to seven lbs. now they did X-rays and the vet is saying there are calcifications around the gallbladder and stomach region. My question is what does this mean exactly? Vet is saying we need to go to IM clinic which is 900 dollars for more X-rays and potentially a diagnosis which if it’s t-cell lymphoma (what she was leaning towards) would be 6k+ for a 50% shot at 2 years remission. I hate to make this about dollars and cents but I have spent 2k on vet visits and tests and everything in the last 2 months and that is an awful lot for us right now.
As it stands right now my poor Cheeto is basically on death’s door. He has been drinking TONS of water and I have been giving him canned food and scrambled eggs whenever he wants it. He still has a very voracious appetite, moreso than when this whole episode began. He was FINE in February. At least to my eyes. Now he is skin and bones and can barely move. We are discussing EOL care but I just wanted to see what anyone else thought of the imaging etc.
https://imgur.com/a/nsFz1J2
Any help or opinions would be really appreciated.
Thanks so much.

2024.05.14 20:58 smEllieOG Should I stop taking my birth control before seeing new PCP or doing labs?

First, thanks for reading. Also if this question does not belong here, please let me know/point me in the right direction. I, 28F, will be establishing care with a new PCP in late June. I have not been to the doctor since at least 2020 or 2021 due to financial strain. In the last 1-3 years I have developed symptoms that concern me such as, sensitivity to the cold (my hands physically hurt, no color changes), hair loss, rapid weight gain (gained 40lbs+ since June 2023), joint pain in hips since Feb 2024, and I have always experienced fatigue. Additionally I have been on hormonal birth control for at least 8-10 years. I stopped taking mental health medications (effexor and straterra) in July 2023, and the only thing I am taking is birth control and OTC pain meds (Advil) as needed. I have a little over a month before my appointment, should I stop taking birth control? Particularly before getting labs done. I plan to ask for labs including a CBC, CMP, and Thyroid testing. Thyroid issues run in my family, my mother alone had 3 autoimmune disorders so that is kind of my focus. Would this be enough time for my body to return to baseline?
Any insight is appreciated!

2024.05.14 18:09 total_normie I have been nauseous and fatigued for a month at 20, getting really worried!

To preface, I am 20M, 1.8m and 83kg. No significant existing conditions, currently taking prochlorperazine between 15 to 25mg a day. UK student but live in Romania.
Primary complaint: Nausea and fatigue for a month. Right under ribs abdominal pain for a week. General GI issues (diarrhoea, bloating, gas etc.). Face feels very hot - temperature on the higher end of normal (gets up to 37.5 C in the afternoon).
Hi everyone, please read if you can, worrying myself sick and would love someone to tell me I'm not going insane.
4 weeks ago I had orchiepididymitis which was treated with 5 days of Gentamicin IM and 7 days of levofloxacin (Romanian medical system... my GP did not believe me that they gave me such strong stuff). Since the day I went to the ER and started treatment for this, I haven't felt normal.
During the week I ended up in the ER again with what turned out to be a panic attack. I spent the whole week with horrendous anxiety, depression, paranoia and generally felt horrible (GI issues including yellow/pale stool, nausea, and this horrid 'hot' feeling), among other things which I cannot really remember since I was so out of it. My family doctor said (helpfully enough, after the fact) that I was having some pretty serious side effects from the medication but that they should go away.
Well, I'm posting here because they haven't. After the week of treatment I was given another 24 days of antibiotic but I only took one of the courses given because I felt so awful while on the first one (Cefixime). Nauseous all day, really bad tiredness that wouldn't go away even with proper sleep (although I could not sleep through the night properly). My GP have me the prochlorperazine to curb this, worked for a while while on the Cefixime, stopped it 3-4 days before finishing the antibiotics but it came back with a vengeance this week.
Now I am 1 week+ off that antibiotic and I still feel awful. The hot feeling is back but feels worse than it did in that first week, I've been having diarrhoea (possibly related to new magnesium supplements) but the most worrying symptoms are definitely the nausea and fatigue which are not going away, even though my sleep has been great.
I'm so tired of feeling like this, if anyone has any idea what's going on please help! I've worried myself sick googling and my GP is unconcerned but ordered blood tests to be cautious (next Monday).
Is it possible that the symptoms are unrelated to the antibiotics? Obviously, everything online tells me I have cancer so I can't figure out what it could actually be.
I should add - my blood tests from a week before the infection were (almost) perfect, apart from a barely low neutrophil count (1.97, limit 2), slightly high cholesterol and low vit. D which I have since taken supplements for. During that week I had two CBC, one when I went to the ER with the infection which showed high WBC, protein C etc. indicating infection, and the latter CBC showed perfect values (everything in optimal range).

2024.05.14 14:56 UnholyLuna94 28w 5d Anemia

Yesterday I did my 28 week glucose test and cbc panel. Got the results today and basically everything is low. My RBC, Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, MCHC, and Platelets. Also my RBW is high, I have a basic understanding that anyone of these being low, or if the RBW is high, can cause Anemia. What if it's all of them together? My doctor sent a note saying that I am anemic and to start take supplements.
This is my 4th pregnancy and I'm use to my Platelets dropping, it's happened in 2 of my previous 3 pregnancies, but I've never had all my other numbers drop like this. I take a daily prenatal and I eat a fairly balanced diet of red meats, leafy greens, etc.
I'm not seeking medical advice I have an appointment today already and will discuss with my OB further. I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced this and what have you noticed in regards to your bodies and baby. Could this explain why I'm in a constant state of exhaustion? More then the normal "I'm pregnant" lol.

2024.05.14 10:47 milmani Double vision, aura, vertigo, tinnitus, headaches, numbness, muscle twitches, memory loss

25F, BMI healthy range, no smoking, no drugs, low alcohol consumption. Physical job, good shape. Medications beclometasone (asthma), sertraline. North Europe.
EYES: For the past month I have had nonstop visual problems which feels like a migraine aura. My vision is grainy like TV static noise. If I look at a geometric pattern, it starts moving: if I stand on our geometric rug and look down, my feet disappear from my vision. If lighting changes, I see white and black spots and patches moving around. If I close my eyes, I also see patches moving, even flashing lights sometimes. I struggle to focus on looking at things, other thigns around the focus point start moving or then I have double vision. I have occasional pain behind my **left eye**, a feeling of pressure, sometimes tingling and goosebumbs in the eyesocket. One night red spots (petechiae) appeared around this eye.
VERTIGO/EARS: I have vertigo on and off. At worst I couldn't stand straight without swaying and even crawled on the floor cause everything was spinning. If I close my eyes and try to walk or stand on one leg, I fall down. (Normally I do sports that require good balance and am able to eg. go up and down a rope on one leg and jump onto obstacles and slide while downhill skiing.) I have tinnitus, mainly low noise like holding an ear against a seashell, sometimes periods of loud beeps. Once I lost hearing in my **left ear** for a period of time.
COGNITIVE: I forget things a lot and struggle to focus. I've always been absentminded but never this featherbrained. Before in my life I had never lost my bank card, and only once left the house while forgetting my keys inside. Now in a short period of time I have lost my bank card twice and keys twice and only got them back with the help of strangers. I have also felt just generally disorientated at times, asking stupid questions and misunderstanding what I'm told and just having very absurd thought chains that leave me acting like an idiot over something that could be done simply.
NUMBNESS: My legs, hands from elbow down, and mouth went numb last Saturday and still remain a little bit numb. I struggled walking, had to sit down a lot, and my grip wasn't as tight as normal. I felt lightheaded standing. I could speak and smile, though, and my face wasn't and never has been droopy. When I smile, though, the muscles on the left side of my mouth tense up unusually with wrinkles that used not to be there.
SWALLOWING: I struggle swallowing at times, threw up water once and just keep coughing at other times. (The petechiae I mentioned earlier happened after I threw up, so it could also be a result of that.)
EXHAUSTION: One day I was able to stay awake for just five hours (granted I was in the ER the past night for numbness), another night I slept for like fifteen hours. I am tired a lot, some days all I can do is lie in bed or sit on couch, other days I have to take more breaks and just go to bed right after work (if I've been even able to get to work.)
Tests so far: EKG normal. CBC normal. Blood pressure within normal range, a little elevated in one test but could have been just me worrying about not being able to stand at the time. Blood sugar and culture normal.
Tried so far: Headache does not respond to ibuprofen or paracetamol. I tried Epley manoeuvre for two weeks as a doctor suggested it, either that or rest from sick leave days might have improved the vertigo from "unable to stand without swaying" to "just annoying." Eye strain helps somewhat when I take off my glasses.
I feel like doctors aren't taking me seriously, even brought up my mental health history out of the bush like I'm imagining things even though I'm all gucci on that end. I get that my symptoms are unusual as a whole and they find it unlikely it's anything acute, but my life is so hellish with this shit, it's like flipping a coin if I'll be lying in bed all day with a headache and nausea and numbness and what not, or when I do drag my ass to work, if I gotta drag a chair around cause I struggle standing, and keep pushing myself to the end of the shift telling myself "just one more hour." It's also annoying I haven't seen properly for a month, even now writing this hurts my head. It's like they are hiding referrals like government secrets lol.
Background information: I have asthma and alfa-1-antitrypsin-deficiency (MZ alleles). I have also been on sertraline for years. (I did stop it last autumn when a doctor suggested it wasn't necessary anymore. I have family history of bipolar, and experienced a two week period of hypomania like symptoms after stopping. Soon after, a stressful life event triggered a depressive episode, which lasted for two months, but subsided as I started the medication again and got over the stressful life event. For the past four months I have had less stress than normally, I have been happy, I love my new work, I have friends, etc. When starting and ending sertraline I had mild side symptoms such as a feeling of vertigo for a second or two when moving my head quickly, but I would find it quite strange that a medication that has worked well for me for years would suddenly be behind all these strange symptoms that started about a month ago.)

2024.05.14 01:02 tairanasaurus Concerning bloodwork results

I'm a 34 year old female (never pregnant, not trying) in the US who recently had some bloodwork done after suffering from a recent increase migraines. Height is 5'4" and weight is around 140 lbs. My current meds include 0.5mg of clonazepam daily, 30mg total of fluoxetine daily, and a weekly dose of vitamin D3. I don't have any other medical conditions. My work is mostly sedentary and I've been on a plant-based, vegan diet for about 4 months now. I was working out regularly for a while but have been out of it for a few weeks now.
The concerning results include: TSH: high at 4.53, BUN/creatinine ratio: low at 7, ALT (SGPT): high at 33, Total cholesterol: high at 227, LDL: high at 158
Everything else (Free T3/T4, CBC, Metabolic and Lipid levels) were normal. Despite my change in diet, both cholesterol levels listed above have increased around 30 points since I last had bloodwork done in January 2024. Would could be contributing to these abnormalities?
Edited to add: I have already been referred by my PCP to have an ultrasound done on my thyroid and an MRI of my brain for the migraines. I am also having more bloodwork done in a few days to look at thyroid antibody levels.

2024.05.13 17:45 Best-Brick-1692 Question about bloodwork

33F
Height:5’2
Weight: 210
Medications: adderall 20mg XR, omeprazole 40mg daily, OTC Vitamin C, Vitamin b and vitamin D.
Known diagnosis’s of ADHD, GERD and GAD.
I went in for my yearly wellness and my CBC came back with some lows regarding my hemoglobin. My doctor ordered more tests including an iron panel(?) i think and a ferritin. Those results are in my portal now and are also kind of all over. I’ve never really thought about being anemic but that seems to be what’s most likely the issue with iron deficiency. My main question is should supplements alone get everything back to normal? Is there anything i should discuss with my doctor later in the week or is this really just a wait until the supplements start to work.
As for symptoms i never thought about them but I do have cold hands and feet, I’m on the paler side but I always have been. I also get dizzy if I stand too fast and winded while walking up stairs (I always attributed this to my weight I know I could lose some and a doctor has never looked deeper into anything). Sometimes when I’m lying down for bed I can also feel my heart beating fast ish just from settling in.
I’ll put the lab results in the comments, thanks so much for any insight!

2024.05.13 16:13 The_Soviet_Stoner Questions

My dog got into a bottle of ibuprofen on Thursday. This was not discovered until Friday. She spent 48 hours in the animal hospital receiving treatment which included fluids, and other medications. 3 Lab tests have come back in appropriate ways and the hospital was happy with the results. She was discharged home with one medication.
Since she has been home she’s been pretty tired. And she has been leaking urine when she sleeps. She was given 150mg Trazadone Friday, 300mg Saturday, and 150 mg yesterday. Is there cause for concern about the incontinence or is she still somewhat stoned and full of iv fluids?
She has urinated 3-4 times in the last 12 hours. Each an appropriate amount and urine has appeared to be clear or faint in color.
Should I make an appointment with her normal vet earlier than animal hospital asked for follow up? Animal hospital suggested follow up with reg vet in 1 week with labs.
Species: Dog • Age: 2 • Sex/Neuter status: Female Spayed • Breed: Husky • Body weight: 68lbs • History: 48 hours of ER vet stay due to ibuprofen ingestion. • Clinical signs: sleepy, and leaking • Duration: past 12 hours • Your general location: southwest USA
Links to test results, vet reports, X-rays etc. - I have printouts of the cbc panels from each of the three days. If needed I can tell you the values. But all are within the normal range.

2024.05.13 09:13 Mysterious_Band2737 Journey to a long healthy productive life-week 1

05/05/24 107.4 kg
12/05/24 104 kg
On Friday 03 May 2024 a FB Spam message catches my eye from MedExpress about several products including Mounjaro (MJ), the latest GLP-1 agonist. This offers benefits for NIDDM and weight loss and intuitively feels like something right for me. I read a little about it and complete their online questionnaire. Shortly afterwards I decide to order it. £149 for a month’s supply seems good value to me. The side effect profile looks good and my risk of a thyroid tumour which the lab rats got doesn’t feel very high! I do nevertheless note the things to keep an eye on for the weeks ahead. Later that day they ask me for proof of ID and a head to toe full length Selfie to confirm I am as obese as I say I am. Taking a full length Selfie proved logistically difficult but the large upstairs mirror saved the day. I am pleased that they take their Clinical Governance seriously having previously chaired the Trust’s CG Committee and my confidence in the online medication provider increases. Of note some online platforms confirm a minority of people who want to take these drugs for a couple of weeks before their summer holiday to shed a few pounds.
Royal Mail Special delivery arrives early on Saturday morning and I decide I will take my first dose on Sunday. Gabi and I share our dinner on Saturday and we enjoy sharing a nice bottle of red wine. I have had an interesting relationship with alcohol for most of my life, drinking more than was good for me. I have no idea what impact MJ will have on that but I am curious to find out.
First thing Sunday I weigh myself. I decide to weigh myself once a week to keep an objective record of my weight loss. Whilst I am hopeful of a number of health benefits, weight loss is top of the list. I don’t initially have a specific goal in mind but weighing in at 107.4 kg it is clear that I have plenty to lose although I am pleased to note I don’t feel under any pressure to have to lose it quickly or by a specific date. The clinical trials with MJ quote data up to 72 weeks and that helps set a realistic idea that this will take many months as a minimum.
The starting dose is low at 2.5mg which I inject in to my ample belly easily and with no pain. The instructions are clear and come with some helpful diagrams which allow me to inject myself with confidence. That might sound odd being a doctor by training. Two thoughts come to mind. Firstly I don’t recall ever giving a SC injection to a patient let alone myself. Secondly I want to get it right; a natural anxiety I suspect many people have when they undertake a new adventure and especially when it is one of great importance to them.
The first thing I notice is an almost immediate suppression of my appetite. I no longer feel hungry. Can this be possible I ask myself? This kicked in within an hour or so of my injection. The doctor in me wonders if this is a Placebo effect. Surely it can’t work that quickly? I quickly drop this thinking and simply embrace my gratitude for a new perspective on things and accepting that I am not hungry is all that matters to me.
I am pleased to report that not feeling hungry continued for the next five and a half days. On Friday evening before dinner I started to feel hungry for the first time that week. Nothing serious, just a healthy “normal” hunger which didn’t overwhelm me or tempt me to snack on my old favourites such as cheese or bread and butter peanut. No this was just an acknowledgment that it was time to eat something and I was glad when dinner was ready an hour or two later. A similar thing happened on Saturday evening and again this passed peacefully without any drama.
The second thing I have noticed all week is how quickly I feel full once I start eating. I am eating approximately half of my usual portion and if and when I have put more food on my plate than I need I have chosen to leave it. Significantly this again has been effortless, natural and has not attracted any conditioned thinking about wasting food, the starving children of the world or what by long deceased grandmother might have to say on the matter. My diet hasn’t changed radically and was always healthy. Everything is cooked fresh, very little processed food and very little sugar. I just ate too much before. I never had an off switch. MJ seems to have moved that internal switch for me and for that I am again very grateful. Are some people’s brains wired differently?
As an illustration of this Gabi wanted a BBQ on Saturday night. The menu consisted of Wagyu beef burgers, grilled halloumi, grilled avocado, grilled sweetcorn and vegetable kebabs. I cooked the dinner and we sat outside in some welcome sunshine. Despite being good beef, I found the meat greasy and unappetising so I left half of it. I had already decided not to have a bread roll. I enjoyed the avocado, some vegetables and one piece of halloumi. A few bites of the sweetcorn was enough. I was full and just stopped eating. There was left over cheese. I can assure you that has never happened before!
Another thing I have noticed is the sensation of feeling bloated, even after eating what for me are small portions. In reality my belly has already begun to shrink but nevertheless the sensation is there. That agin seems to have helped with my portion sizes as I feel physically full quickly as well as emotionally satisfied. Feeling full most of the time including for example when I wake up has meant I have been eating less often. Typically that has meant eating twice a day, usually a late morning brunch and then dinner around 6-7. I have found myself drawn to a high protein, low carb diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, seeds and nuts. On the odd occasion I was a little hungry mid afternoon, a few raw nuts or a piece of fruit hit the spot nicely. In general though my desire to snack has gone. I used to have a habit of wandering in to the kitchen for no apparent reason. I would literally catch myself in there looking for something to eat. I wasn’t hungry and sometimes I don’t remember how I ended up there but before I knew it another slice of cheese and bread with peanut butter would have been cut and quickly eaten. The aimless kitchen grazing has thankfully gone too.
Many people on the forums I have read talk about the absence of “food noise.” I don’t know what they mean by the term but I can guess. My own experience is that I no longer think about food. A ridiculous amount of mental energy was previously spent on all things food related. That is no longer the case. The internal chatter has gone. A second benefit for me is the lack of “alcohol noise.” I am not thinking about alcohol which again could and did occupy far too much bandwidth. I am curious to see how this develops. I haven’t committed to going alcohol free again at the moment but given how little I am eating, I wonder when a nice glass of wine is offered will I say yes? If so how will it taste, how much will I drink and crucially will it counteract the MJ and increase my appetite for food in general and/or the foods I am no longer interested in such as cheese?
Put more simply, having no food or alcohol noise has allowed me to live an even bigger percentage of my life with a quiet mind and beautiful feelings.
A quick note on side effects. Basically none. A slight change in bowel habit but nothing worthy of comment.
My relationship with food has changed. My relationship with my body feels different. My appetite feels very different to the extent that sometimes I have had to remember to eat. For the first time I can recall, food is just a thing in my life. It no longer has a hold over me, it is not bestowed with special powers it is a fuel to keep me alive and crucially I am drawn to the foodstuffs I know are good for me not simply because that’s what every Sunday newspaper tells me but because my own Wisdom and intuition guides me every day, moment by moment.

2024.05.13 02:27 No-Tap-4964 Academically Dismissed: What Should I Do?

TL;DR: Got dismissed due to grades while sick. I tried to get help. The school did not help. Can I transfer? Or, should I repeat at my school and hope things change?
Hey all, I was academically dismissed in my second semester of first year. I had failed (marginally) in three courses (of nine) and my overall average was below the threshold (58.9). I have been having a lot of health issues (including depression) resulting in low test scores, absences, etc. I have to petition to re-enter my program and this info with my record of trying to access al supports available (tutoring, accommodations, medical treatment, etc.) works strong in my favor...
However, I am not excited to be repeating this term for a few reasons. 1. The school promised tutoring support if students proved they were failing, but I am very disappointed because I needed a tutor, got assigned someone, and received two one-hour sessions the entire semester. 2. I brought it to the dean that students with accommodations were NOT being given the same information during exams. We couldn't clarify any wording of the exam which made it hard to know what structure was being referenced (during practicals) and that we were only meant to fill out one diagram--not two--which would have been great to know because had I known, I would have chosen the one I felt confident on which would have resulted in me passing. Nothing happened about this. 3. One professor was a nightmare to deal with and to repeat that... I would rather do a lot of things.
My questions: How do I bring up these concerns so things will be different? Can I transfer to another school (even if that means repeating the entire year)? It seems like success rates are low. If it is possible, should I include the issues with my current college or would that be bad taste?
Thanks for any advice, y'all.

2024.05.12 20:57 ninemystic Lumps on both sides of jaw bone

Hello everyone :) I'm 27M from the UK, not taking any medications aside from folic acid due to deficiency on advice of GP.
I've recently discovered hard immovable lumps on both sides of my jawbone that have me a little concerned. They are found in exactly the same place on both sides, at the point where the angle of the jaw changes from horizontal to vertical. They both feel more like two bumps with a little "valley" between them than discrete growths. Worried this was swollen lymph nodes but after looking at a bunch of anatomical diagrams and following videos on how to examine your nodes, I think that would be more in the fleshy area behind the jaw rather than directly sitting on it?
I'm pretty freaked out about it as from what I've read online hard immovable lumps tend not to be good. However, because they are on both sides I'm also worried they might just be normal and I don't want to waste my GP's time. As it stands I have an appointment in 3 days to get them checked but would like some info if anyone has some, either to set my mind at ease or to stress the importance of the appointment.
Thank you in advance :)

Sooo, new to getting blood drawn so often…
I am not a needle fan, but I can get past the initial prick. But if they take enough blood, my blood pressure inevitably drops and I feel terrible and nearly pass out. Any way to combat this?
I am still hoping nothing’s wrong with me. But my new hematologist says that for most things that COULD be wrong, phlebotomy is the answer. My entire life I’ve had a strong aversion to getting my blood drawn, so this is like…nightmare fuel.
Also, has anyone had this many tests done only to find out they have no idea what’s going on? I have high RBCs, high hemoglobin, high hematocrit, and high total protein.

2024.05.12 17:13 catinterpreter Is Difflam Mouth Gel safe for use with a cat? Link within, and photos for context.

Difflam Mouth Gel info
I've been told an upper-right tooth needs extraction. And the lower-left was pointed out as showing gingivitis.
Poverty means an extraction isn't something I can commit to, especially when I've been told surgery is by the hour and they can't give me an idea of how long it'll take or a maximum duration, partly because they might want to take more teeth out at the time. An hour's surgery will see me skipping (even more) meals for the next year, two hours will be absolutely crippling, and beyond that there's no way in hell I can find the money, on the day or over time. The practice is already aware I have very little money. There are very limited options for alternative vets in this small town and I can't travel.
I suspect my cat's had on-going dental pain in the last two months causing regular anxiety (this last visit showed stable medicated hyperthyroidism, no infection, liver and kidneys fine - CBC was fine) and since a few months prior to that she's been favouring her left side when eating. The upper-right tooth can move a little inwards (horizontally towards the centre mouth, I think) when I run a finger over the outside. In the few times I've done this to explore the problem, almost every touch seemingly had no reaction except once when her eyes widened and she moved off. I'm concerned someday soon she'll have a big problem with this tooth and resulting pain, and I won't have anything for it in response. So, I'm wondering if Difflam would help in a crisis. It's certainly helped me to date when I've suddenly had a big, very painful dental problem and no options.
I'm open to any other ideas you may have as well, e.g. in terms of keeping her mouth and this tooth clean, and pain relief.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: I should also add, she was diagnosed with megacolon a year and a half or so ago and that's been managed pretty well. I don't think it's the cause of the recent anxiety. And, because of this she's been on an exclusively wet diet, and I blend it into a smooth paste. She'll be fine without teeth if need be.
And, she's 11 years-old.

2024.05.11 22:45 Suspicious-Movie319 AITA: My GF Thinks I'm Checking Out Boobs, But I'm Studying Breast Cancer (Serious)

So, this is a weird one. My girlfriend (22F) and I (23M) have been together for 3 years. We're pretty good at communicating, but things got tense tonight.
I'm studying to be an oncologist, and right now, we're deep into breast cancer. I was scrolling through medical journals on my laptop, and some of the articles have pictures – you know, mammograms, anatomy diagrams, stuff like that. My girlfriend walks in and sees me looking at a screen with... well, breasts.
She completely flips. Accuses me of checking out women online while studying. I try to explain it's for school, show her the article title (something like "Early Detection of Invasive Lobular Carcinoma"), but she's fuming. Says it's disrespectful and dismissive of her feelings.
Look, I get it might look bad, but I'm genuinely studying! This stuff is important, and these images help understand the disease. Am I the jerk (AITJ) for looking at medical images while studying, even if they involve breasts?
Here's the thing:
I can totally see how it looked bad. I wouldn't be checking out random women online – that's disrespectful. But I also need to focus on my studies for this important field.
So, Reddit, what do you think? AITA?

2024.05.11 20:03 PunkFlamingo69 Active Internal Shingles - VSZ antibodies test results

40F, height 5’2” weight 140 lbs…danceactive mother of two littles. Non Smokeminimal drinker, take vitamins and supplements but no regular medications except some Advil for pain or cold/allergy meds as needed.
I have a friend that had this and my symptoms are suspiciously similar. I’m waiting for an appointment with a neurologist and an endocrinologist.
Have been suffering from internal pain (primarily trunk/chest and back from neck down, and swollen lymph nodes and fatigue for several weeks. It has also morphed into some numbness and tingling in my face and hands.
Bloodwork showed High SED rate and high CRP, positive ANA but not for a specific autoimmune. Other CBC was unremarkable, white blood cells high end of normal. Thyroid normal. Cortisol normal. Partial hysterectomy.
Tests have ruled out lupus and RA and Lyme and MS…
My Varicella antibodies did come back over 700. Does anyone know if this is a typical amount showing from when I had chicken pox as a kid, or it that level more representative of an active/recent infection?
Thanks in advance!
