Hi,
I have a built-in Beko fridge freezer (frost-free) with a 70/30 split. While the freezer seems to be working fine, the fridge keeps cycling between warm and cold temperatures.
I checked the freezer and noticed that the fan is spinning freely. The back wall of the fridge ices over, revealing the outline of a pipe. Although the fridge can reach 2°C, it soon starts melting and warms up to around 16°C before cooling down again. This cycle repeats continuously.
I've placed a thermometer in the fridge to log the temperature.
I've attached pictures of the back wall of the fridge when it's iced over, as well as the temperature log.
What could be causing this issue?

I am Sim Racing since 6 months now and am doing so in VR only (Quest 3 with link cable). I am not a Pro and I dont have a clue on how to setup cars, tyres etc. BUT I still like to have a realistic driving experience where I do need to improve myself to get better and not some Need for Speed / Forza Horizon casual type of game.
My setup is a Fanatec DD Pro (8Nm) mounted on a Playeat Trophy. I am generally happy with the hardware and did not have issues with it. Software is another thing...
I love sim racing when I am not fighting with technical issues. Theese issues are so annoying that on some days I don't even want to start playing. I will list a few of them.
-Oculus Software taking 5 Minutes to startup, sometimes hangs itself up in setup process -Something always has to update when I just want to play -PC audio not switching to Quest 3 by itself-> having to do it manually everytime I want to play -Sometimes my wheel/pedals are not detected ingame even tho I power them on the same way every time -VR integration in games is absoulute dog shit: Cant use wheel analog-stick to navigate menu. Had to buy a wireless keyboard with trackpad and need to switch between keyboard, quest controller and wheel constantly (depending on game). Why do I even need the quest controller... No way to access desktop view without taking the quest controller and clicking twice to get to it. Hand tracking which would probably solve the issue is not available while using quest link (wtf why?) -Quest 3 battery is trash even when plugged in (max 2-3 hours at max settings) -Constant fiddeling with settings: Cant just swap games as every game needs different kind of fanatec settings. Setting up Force Feedback to feel good is a pain everytime, takes a lot of time and in some games you have to do it even from car to car.
Now to the games I played:
Asetto Corsa: Incredibly annoying that you want/have to use mods to get a decent experience from the game. Initially I spent like 6 hours to get everything looking decent. The need of content manager also implies the need of desktop view and the wireless keyboard between runs. If it works its fine tho. Story mode has a KTM car (level 4 I think) that spins the rear out no matter what I do an locks up steering while braking. Cant procees in story as this level blocks me from getting further. Other people experienced the same thing, its not just me.
Dirt Rally 2.0: Once setup correctly (2 hours of fiddeling with settings) generally very satisfied with the game. One of the better VR experiences I had and not had many problems. Can recommend it.
Asetto Corsa Competizione: Unusuable VR experience on my RTX4090. Getting head ache after 10 Minutes because the picture is very distorted and generally just bad image quality. Gameplay itself feels very good tho. Best force feedback feeling personally.
Automobilista 2: Has to use keyboard to navigate menu. Other than that the VR experience and also driving experience is pretty good. Game lacking story mode content.
iRacing: Incredibly expensive. The game feels great but I hate to play online. This game is for not for me because of the type of content and payment system.
Gran Turismo 7: Fuck Sony. Would love to play it on PC. Would be the exact type of content that I would wish to have from a sim racing game.
Project Cars 2: Couldnt get it to run in VR.
My hopes and dreams for future VR sim racing: I hope that Asetto Corsa Evo which should release to early access in 2024 will have a very very good VR integration. If I start the game, I like to have a wheel-navigateable menu, nice graphics without mods, story mode, good force feedback presets and dialed in presets for different popular wheels in general.
I dont even ask for much and it's a shame that things just dont work out of the box. I get that sim racing and especially in VR does not have to biggest audience and ist still rather niche compared to fortnite and that shit.
When I show my VR setup to my friends and letting them drive they all love it. But they can just sit down, slap on the headset and drive. They don't know the amount of time I had to invest to get everyhting running how it should. I just can't recommend them to get themselves a rig even to I would like to..
I know I am ranting here, but this is just how I feel.
I would love to hear other VR users experience on sim racing in the comments.

I've been using laptops predominantly for more than a decade, but my current laptop is showing its age. So I decided it's the time to build a new PC. First, because I already have all the periphery (couple monitors, mechanical keyboard, speakers, etc.); second, because I can build it slowly over time, buying part by part, instead of spending a lot of money at once on a good laptop; and third, after finishing the build I don't have to stop and can continue buying better parts and replacing them one by one. With that in mind, unsurprisingly I picked AM5 platform. I did quite a lot of research but I need some help from Reddit hivemind.
My end goal is to have a linux machine for work (mostly programming) and some 1440p gaming (mostly indie, ATS/ETS2, strategies like Civ. I don't care about 99% of AAA). I already have:

• AMD Ryzen 5 7600 CPU (tray version from AliExpress, no cooler);
  
• TeamGroup T-Create Expert 2x16 GB DDR5-6000 CL30 RAM (also from AliExpress, yet to arrive);
  
• Zalman ZM5​00-GS, about a decade old 500W PSU, still works and seems to be in good order;
  
• 4TB Seagate HDD;
  
• A handful more of various SATA SSDs and HDDs I acquired from upgrading laptops;
  
• Case; 1440p 75 Hz monitor, 1080p 60 Hz monitor; peripherals.
  

My plan is to buy a motherboard and CPU cooler first, I already set some money aside, build and start using it as soon as RAM comes. The next paycheck, a new PSU. The next one, some NVMe storage. And after a couple more paychecks, a GPU. After that, in longer term, upgrade to 7800X3D/9xxx, maybe better mobo as well, more storage, better GPU, etc., the sky's the limit.
The questions I'd like to get some input on:
1) How dangerous it really is to use a PSU so old? I tested it with some old hardware a bit time ago, and I checked the voltages with a multimeter. It seems to be working well and stable. It will be used at around third to half of its rated power at most, it actually never ran at even close to full capacity before, and has been in storage for some years now. And it's going to be used for no longer than a month. I can't afford a good new PSU immediately, and buying a cheap one feels like a waste of money.
2) I need some help choosing the motherboard. I live in Sakartvelo, a.k.a. Georgia, it's a relatively poor country with a tiny market so the stocks are very limited and the prices here are all over the place. That's why I resorted to AliExpress for CPU and RAM, but I don't want to order the MoBo from there. My current shortlist is:

• MSI Pro X670-P WiFi @ 500 ₾ ($177, €163.5);
  
• MSI MAG X670E Tomahawk WiFi @ 600 ₾ ($212, €196);
  
• Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming WiFi @ 500 ₾ ($177, €163.5);
  
• MSI Pro B650M-A WiFi @ 545 ₾ ($193, €178);
  
• GigaByte B650M Gaming X AX @ 550 ₾ ($195, €180);
  
• Asus Prime B650-Plus @ 400 ₾ ($142, €131).
  

There are some other Asus, AsRock and MSI options around as well, but I don't think they're good value. I also did not include mini-ITX boards. Additionally, I don't really want to go Asus, due to their bad reputation and poor VRMs.
Now, X670 boards seem like an obvious choice here, and I like the extra connectivity and better audio. But which one to choose? And maybe I'm missing something here? X670 feels like a total overkill for my purposes, and maybe something like the cheapest MSI PRO A620M-E for 280 ₾ ($99, €92) will be enough for now, and upgrade to better X670/X870 board only when I'm ready to upgrade the CPU?
3) The CPU cooler. I know that Thermalright Peerless Assassin is considered the King, but given that people use it for 7800X3Ds and such, I feel like it will be total overkill for my 7600. I'd like to keep it under Peerless Assassin's price point of 100 ₾ ($35, €33). I'm thinking about the following models, and would be grateful if anyone will provide a feedback on those:

• Thermalright Assassin X 90 SE @ 50 ₾ ($18, €16);
  
• Thermalright Assassin King 120 SE @ 55 ₾ ($19.5, €18);
  
• Thermalright Assassin X 120 Refined SE @ 60 ₾ ($21, €20).

4) The Storage. I'm thinking about using 120–256 GB NVMe SSD for OS and software (root), 1 or 2 TB fast NVMe SSD for games and files (home directory), and HDD(s) for "colder" storage of stuff like old photos and CD rips. Does it sound solid, or should I reconsider anything? Like ditch the small SSD and go for only a single big one? I can't afford big one immediately, but I can use a SATA SSD for a while.
I will appreciate any responses. I know I'm probably overthinking it too much, and I need a second opinion.

I've posted on here a lot over the last few years and met some cool, and some not so cool, people so now here I am rewriting my post again to see who else is around!
I'm 26 and from South East England. Physically, I'm fat (cuddly 😛) I've got short brown hair, blue/greyish eyes, a nose, 2 arms, 2 legs, and all that usual stuff. In my free time, I do quite a lot of gaming, although not as much as I used to. I've got a massive box of films and TV shows that I'm gradually working my way through. It's mostly horror and sci-fi films at the moment, and I could definitely do with someone else to cuddle up and watch them with! I'm also into Warhammer 40k, but I haven't built or painted anything for ages so I've mostly got a cabinet full of grey plastic at the moment... I would like to do some travelling to tick things off my bucket list, but travelling alone is never as much fun as having someone to go with! I'm currently looking into a trip to Svalbard, but a lot of the activities have a minimum of two people so it'd be even less fun to travel there alone!
For other discussion topics, I've got a soft spot for anything paranormal or conspiracy theory related, anything science related, or pretty much anything else you can think of!

TL;DR Me and my players from different groups meet IRL for the first time and decide to play a game at local con, but some unbearable kid's behaviour forces us to leave.

First of all, a quick off topic: I wanted to share the fact that at this point I have two functioning DnD parties (one is my regular group and the other one consists from people I've mentioned in previous post). Also if you're interested in our DM's backstory from previous post - bad news, we still don't know much. The only thing Sorcerer let us know is that DM had a favourite curse word in school, which was the word "f@ggot". In fact, the DM liked it so much that at some point he was calling EVERYBODY with this word. This backfired rather badly, cause his classmates started to use this word as his nickname. That and the fact that this dude is pretty sensitive towards "the gay stuff" is everything that we know so far and unfortunatelly we won't have an opportunity to investigate more, cause the Sorcerer declined an invitation to our game. Anyway, let's move on to the actual story.
So, few of my regular party members had to go to one city for different reasons and we decided to have a short trip to meet IRL for the first time (some of us are from the different parts of the same country and some are from abroad). Luckily, there was a relatively small con in the city at the time, so we decided to go there and play DND for three days straight. I warned my second party about the fact that I won't be able to play next week and it turned out that the Barbarian from the second party lives in the city we were visiting. Needles to say, I immediately decided to take her with us. So, we gather up at this con, chat, walk and have some fun in general. At last, we head to Tabletop area, pick up the table, sit and start playing. Two hours in, we decide to take a break. Few guys stay at the table and the others go outside. Me and Barbarian go to buy some food and drinks, while having some spontaneous date going on. When we come back - there's a 10 or 12 y.o. child sitting at our table and reading my notes behind the DM screen. Now, don't get me wrong: I knew that we were going to play in public, which means that there will be other people and some of them might want to watch, or even join the game. For that instance I created few extra character sheets that I was going to sell for some symbolic price to anybody who wants in. We specifically discussed that it will be alright if we let 2-3 people to play with us. Unfortunatelly, my campaign has R rating, 16+ at best. My players were having a chat with an owner of a BROTHEL at the time we took a break. Luckily, my notes are just a bunch of NPC names, nothing detailed. So, I step up to the kid.
Me: Hey, fella. Can I ask you to leave our table? It's an adult game, you probably shouldn't be hear. Also it's kinda rude to read other people's notes, don't you think?
The Kid: But you're playing DnD, right? I have a DnD character too! Look, he's a cool robot *shows me a pic on his phone*
Me: Yeah, that's cool. Still, we can't let you play with us. Our game is adult themed. There are few more DnD tables, maybe you could join them instead?
Kid: I have a character sheet!
Barbarian: Cool. Anyway, you can't play with us. Period. No offense, buddy. We're just playing our own game and no kids allowed.
The kid gets up and leaves. I let out a sigh of relief and take my place. We continue the campaign. Players are on the mission to find few prostitutes and ask them about a murder related to brothel business. At some point there is a scene, where the Barbarian hooks up with one of the girls to get information while pretending to be her actual client. Right at the moment when I start describing how the prostitute imitates "you know what" and tells info to the Barbarian - the kid shows up again and sits next to our table, all ears.
Me: She leans on to you, breathes heavily and let's out a moan, covering the whisper... What the hell, dude?
Kid: They play Daggersomething, only you play DnD here! I like DnD more!
My friend (to me): Maybe we could tone done the narrative a bit and let him stay?
Me: *Sigh* Alright. Ok, listen, you can stay, just don't interrupt us.
Kid: Can I play?
The whole table: NO.
Me: It's an adult campaign. I'm going to tone down the narrative cause you sit here, but I don't wanna be responsible for your involvement in some nasty stuff.
Barbarian: And also we don't want to work as babysitters, with all due respect.
The Kid: Fine. I'll just watch then.
We continue the game, even though the moment is clearly lost and we have to filter out half of the stuff that is normal to us. I decide to replace the word "prostitute" with a "courtesan".
Kid: What's a courtesan?
Me: Doesn't matter. Dude, I thought we had a deal? Don't interrupt us, please.
Kid: Sorry, I'll google it.
He pulls out a phone and starts typing on sounded keyboard that somehow sounds louder then the whole damn noise of the event. Honestly, when we've seen him pulling out a phone - we should've leave immediately. But unfortunately I'm not really familiar enough with the dangers, that unripened humans can provide, so I just went forward. Few minutes pass and suddenly we hear the sounds of the eldritch horror called "DnD TickTock" being summoned and broadcasted upon our plane.
My friend; Hey, kid! Can you keep it down or put on headphones? Please, for the love of C'thulu.
Kid: I'm not talking!
Friend: Yeah, but your phone does and it's annoying.
Kid: I just watching some DnD stuff. Why is it annoying? Don't you guys play it right now?
Barbarian: What's your problem, kid? You're ruining our game. Can you please just stop or leave us alone at once?
Kid: Pfft, f-i-i-ine.
At this point I'm already boiling up. I feel that I want to end the session and leave to find some other place to play, but unfortunatelly our time is limited and there's no good place to stay anywhere around, other then at the con. I brace myself and continue. There is a specific situation where the NPC is "not convinced" by the information, that players have given. In my mind they need to either make things up, or use some magic, or bring more evidence, or just take it and leave it. My players know that damn well and while they are searching through their spells we hear loud "Make a Persuasion check!!!!". Before I even react to that, Barbarian stands up, picks up her stuff and gets out.
Me: Hey, you're leaving?
Barbarian: I'm gonna call somebody from the staff. Sorry, I'm about to waste a charge of Rage IRL. Will be back in a minute.
We just sit and wait while she comes back. Suddenly the kid takes her chair and sits with us.
Kid: Hey, maybe I can play with you since she left?
Me: I've said, clearly said "No". Like three times.
One of the players: Why do you want to play with us? Is it because of the murder or the hookers?
Kid: *laughs*
My friend: Kids these days, huh?
Barbarian returns with one of the managers.
Manager (to kid): Hey, buddy. What's happening here?
The Kid: I wanna play DnD.
Me: And we have prostitute murders in our game. We asked him to leave multiple times.
Manager (to us): This is public event. He's doesn't have to leave only because you think so.
Barbarian: Sweet! Hey, DM! Let's proceed from the scene where I paid the hooker for the info. Can't wait to hear how you would replicate her moaning.
Manager: Alright, listen. We will make a separate zone for adults, but only tomorrow. Today - sorry. Like I said, that's a public event. Either turn thing down and let the kid stay, or just stop and leave.
And that's what we did. Packed our stuff and left for good. When we were leaving, the kid was sitting at our table and rolling a bunch of dice. Seeing this, the Barbarian sighed and said "I freaking hate children" and I was so much agreed with her. I just hope that they will make an adult zone tomorrow as the manager promised, cause I don't think I have any more patience to endure some annoying children.

I havent really seen this mentioned but your fireteam sits with you (me and wife pictured above). I have no idea if you could fit 12 people on that ledge but would be cool to see. As much of an emotional experience The Final Shape was, this was what hit me the hardest. We've done everything since I got her to try D2 back in 2018. I started my journey alone in 2013 but ended it with a family by my side and yeah I cried a bit, didn't just beat the darkness in game. Love you all

Aside from the internet pictures and larping, does anyone have real combat experience using both mid cut and high cut helmets within the last 6 years? I get the big push for high cuts is that cool guy factor since everyone sees the special forces wearing them, but in a theater where explosives and shrapnel raining down from above and from the sides is as common as taking a piss, I would think folks would want to go back towards MICH style helmets. I also get that the major argument for high cuts are for more comfort while wearing comms, but seeing those gaps on most high cuts between the comms and helmet that reveals the sides of the head seems like a risk factor you’d want to minimize, no? It seems like the big focus these days is tailored strictly for comms and I’m just a bit confused as to why. My time in the marine corps the MICH helmet was the cool guy helmet that the marsoc guys wore and the only folks with comms was our squad leaders and radio operator. Other than that, if we needed to communicate, we just used hand signals and our big boy voices over the gunfire. It made sense that we used high cuts during our time in Afghanistan since we were generally not receiving mortars or artillery rounds at the same consistencing like they’re doing in Ukraine, but it looks like the type of warfare to be conducted for the near foreseeable future along with possible conflicts will see an uptick in both sides having access to high explosive rounds where high cut helmets will be less effective.

I have had this pc for about 3 years or so and while watching YouTube shorts (I know they eat my brain but I like them) found a video of a dude talking about a website to compare GPUs and CPUs for gaming. So i inputted my hardware finding out its like really not good for the GPU (15% bottleneck). I didn't build this PC myself i got it as a gift for getting into my university and never bothered to check over the parts if they are good or not. So my father built it from some used/some new parts (he has little to no idea about computers) so i thought it was a prebuild and never bothered.
Anyway I'm getting off track. I'm not amazing pc head either but i looked up some stuff on YouTube and found some things wrong.
Such as the before mentioned crying bottlenecked GPU and messy RAM values (as I'm pretty sure they are meant to be running at 3000MHz not 1066MHz they are at right now).
So my question is can you all help me in finding how i can make this pc run better for me (I use it for gaming at 1440p and 3D modelling/simulation, mostly CAD). And using the leftover parts for a build that I'm gonna gift to my little brother as his middle school graduation gift where he will be using it probably for some 1080p gaming (i have an old mouse, keyboard and monitor which i previously used I'm gonna give him)

I understand people dislike my cold distant and selfish personality. I avoid reality and ignore stressful situations. Things happen in my head differently from reality and there’s so much comfort being in my head. Much like my online and real life feels like 2 different realities.
Maybe others sold an idealized picture of me, I’m boringly normal is most ways, weirdly abnormal in others. I don’t see benefits in getting to know me, other than being able to get little things done, I’m astonishingly boring. I dream too much.
I know things I shouldn’t or should know, sometimes they seem so private, sometimes involving me. I pretend not to know. Yes, I do like them, I admire how they think differently, ability to get initiate movements, how good they are to me and unbelievably cool they are in front of a crowd, know their stuff.
I have this inhibition in expressing and this dread of being discovered a fraud afterwards, or being subjected to expectations and not being able to live up to.
I fluctuate between anxiety and confidence, and a variety of other annoying emotions. There’s no basis for this confidence, either I’m faking it or just don’t care while sprouting shit .
I have thin skin, which I hate. Where others have ultimate master plans, I think about ultimate escape plans whenever I fuck things up, like running away irresponsibly. What does this say about me. I went ghost on a couple jobs in my early life, I ultimately learned to just speak up.

Independent of the starting method (win restart button, cold or warm boot) the PC sometimes boots up normally and everything works or I don‘t even get the MSI Screen. In that case the standby light of the screen stops blinking for a second and the NUM light on the keyboard turns on. But then it starts over and never boots. Most of the time holding power and restarting solves the problem. Twice I had stuttering and glitches after a restart (see picture).
Which parts should I swap for testing and/or what settings/BIOS version could I try?

-A vacuum chamber, preferably in a spherical shape -A roughing vacuum pump capable of reaching at least 75 microns vacuum -A secondary high vacuum pump, either a turbo pump or oil diffusion pump -A high voltage supply, preferably capable of at least 40kv 10ma - Must be negative polarity -A high voltage divider probe for use with a digital multimeter -A thermocouple or baratron (of appropriate scale) vacuum gauge -A neutron radiation detector, either a proportional He-3 or BF3 tube with counting instrumentation, or a bubble dosimeter -A Geiger counter, preferably a scintillator type, for x-ray detection and safety -Deuterium gas (can be purchased as a gas or extracted from D2O through electrolysis - it is much easier and more effective to use compressed gas) -A large ballast resistor in the range of 50-100k and at least a foot long -A camera and TV display for viewing the inside of the reactor -Lead to shield the camera viewport -General engineering tools, a machine shop if at all possible (although 90% of mine was built with nothing but a dremel and cordless drill, the only thing you really can't build without a shop is scratch building the vacuum chamber)

Step 1: Assemble the Vacuum Chamber

A quality high vacuum chamber is required for the fusor to operate. Sometimes an appropriate chamber can be found on eBay, but generally it is best to make one. Parts can be scrounged for several hundred dollars, or purchased new for $500+.
Get two stainless steel hemispheres, purchase two corresponding conflat-flanges (8" flanges in my case), bore out holes for accessory flanges, and then TIG weld it all together. Flanges are typically either of the KF or the conflat style. Conflat can be seen in the image below as the flanges with bolts, and KF (kwik-flange) are seen as those with only clamps holding an o-ring on the mating surface. Only weld on the inside, never on the outside (since virtual leaks can be formed if both inside and outside are welded). If you've never TIG welded before, it would be wise to have someone with experience do it as the welds must be flawless with no pin-sized holes or porous areas to hold a vacuum.
After machining, thoroughly clean the chamber and avoid getting fingerprints in it since these will outgas, which means at vacuum pressure molecules in the oil of finger prints or machining oil will become vapor and make it hard to maintain plasma stability or reach a good ultimate vacuum level.

Step 2: Prepare the High Vacuum Pump

Install the oil diffusion pump (or turbo pump if you have a bit of luck scrounging or a higher budget). Fill the pump with quality diffusion pump oil to whatever fill level the pump documentation suggests, attach the inlet to a valve which then connects to the chamber (see diagram), and attach the outlet to a mechanical backing pump capable of reaching at least around 75 microns (any higher and the diffusion pump will not operate properly or the oil will oxidize quickly).
Make sure the pump is sufficiently cooled, many oil diffusion pumps require water cooling, smaller ones such as the one pictured can get by with a decent air flow.
Once this is assembled, turn on the mechanical pump and wait for the vacuum to reach at least 75 microns. Next you can test the high vacuum pump by turning on the boiler on the diffusion pump. After it warms up (could take a while), the vacuum should rapidly drop below the single micron range.

Step 3: Build Inner Grid

The inner grid (where the high voltage is applied) must now be built and attached to a high voltage feedthrough.
It is best to use a metal such as tungsten for the grid wires since it has a very high melting point, and the grid will get extremely hot during high power runs.
This can be built however you wish, as long as it resembles a spherical shape of roughly 1-1.5 inches in diameter (for a 6-8" chamber), it should work fine.
The grid should be internally attached to an electrical feedthrough such as the one pictured in the second image. This feedthrough needs to be rated for the cathode voltage that will be used, typically 40kv is a good target voltage.

Step 4: Assemble the Deuterium System

Deuterium gas is used as the fuel for this fusion reactor. You will need to purchase a tank of this gas (unless you wish to do electrolysis on heavy water, this process will not be documented here but nothing more than a small Hoffman Apparatus is required - higher purity gas can be gotten from a compressed tank).
Attach a high pressure regulator directly to the tank, add an extremely fine-metering needle valve after this (or a laser drilled orifice in the range of 5 microns), then attach this to the chamber. A ball valve can also be installed between the regulator and the needle valve since needle valves are not shutoff valves.
See the attached diagram now updated with the deuterium handling system.

Step 5: High Voltage

If you can purchase a power supply (occasionally but not commonly found surplus) appropriate for fusion use, the high voltage becomes very simple. Simply take the output of the 40kv negative supply and attach it to the chamber with a physically large high voltage 50-100k ohm ballast resistor in series (large enough that its length will not flash-over if 40kv is applied to it in a plasma run-away or arc discharge).
The difficulty is that it is often difficult if not impossible to find an appropriate fully assembled DC supply of this voltage level that is affordable to the amateur scientist.
Pictured is my high frequency ferrite transformer pair, with a 4-stage multiplier seen behind it.
If a fully assembled power supply (typically manufactured by either Glassman or Spellman), there are a few options: -Find an x-ray transformer, and if necessary either reverse the rectifiers for negative polarity or add rectifiers if it has none (an x-ray transformer core won't have rectifiers, it probably will if it is in its oil tank) -Build a switching high frequency ferrite power supply. This is what I did, however it requires a bit of EE experience since several aspects must be resonant and if it is ever taken out of tune, the transistors will burn out. Probably not the best option for people with little electrical background.

Step 6: Setup Neutron Detection

The proof of fusion (and a quantitative analysis of how much fusion) is obtained through detecting neutron radiation, the byproduct of a D-D fusion reaction. There are three options which will be described. They are in order of descending ease of setup.
-A Neutron Bubble Dosimeter A bubble dosimeter is a small unit with a gel in it that forms bubbles when ionized by neutron radiation. This is the easiest form of neutron detection available since all you have to do is unscrew the top and set it next to the fusor. Some of the drawbacks are that it is an integrative detector which means all you get is a total neutron emission number over the time that it was used, rather than an instantaneous neutron rate. Additionally, they are somewhat hard to get since the only company to make them is Bubbletech in Canada, which has a minimum order of 3 with steep shipping and handling (expect to spend $700+ if ordering directly from them not in a group buy). Additionally, they tend to be fairly worn out after a year of shelf life (although I've kept mine in a refrigerated storage container at 50*F and it seems to be like new after I think more than a year). The advantage is that calibration data is provided with purchase and of course it is easy.
-Silver Activation When silver is placed near the reactor (with a moderator [paraffin wax, water, HDPE, etc] between it and the neutron source, since only thermal neutrons will activate the material) it becomes slightly radioactive with decent neutron fluxes. It has a short half life of only a few minutes, but if you quickly put a geiger counter next to the silver, counts can be detected. In my best runs, I have gotten a piece of silver to about 250CPM over background on a CDV-700 geiger-counter. The disadvantages of this are that it requires a decent neutron flux (at least about 100,000 neutrons/s) which is above the average "beginner's first run" neutron rate. Also, it is somewhat difficult to calibrate, and the counts can't be taken until after the fusor has been shut off.
-A Proportional Tube Tubes can be purchased which are filled with either BF3 or Helium-3 (some very old tubes are Boron-10 lined inert gas tubes). These tubes, similar to a geiger counter, can be used with a counting device to detect electrical pulses when neutrons pass through the tube. Either an all-in-one counter can be used, often made by a company called Ludlum, or a modular counting system can be made using NIM modules. The tube is surrounded by about 2 inches of moderating material such as wax or water. This is by far the most accurate and useful form of neutron detection, however the cost of a new tube is prohibitive to most people, and they are extremely rare on the surplus market. Also, counting equipment can become quite costly.
NIM Configuration: If you chose to make a NIM setup as I have, the typical layout is a charge sensitive pre-amplifier at the head of the proportional tube, which is plugged into both a high voltage power supply generating positive polarity voltage appropriate for the tube (in the range of 800V-2kV generally). The amplifier also hooks into a shaping amplifier, which is followed by a Single Channel Analyzer (for setting the detection discrimination level), followed by a pulse counter and/or rate meter.
Shown in the first picture is my NIM setup, the second picture is the pre-amplifier attached to a moderated helium-3 tube, the third picture is a bubble detector after being exposed to neutrons.

Step 7: Fire It Up (and Cross Your Fingers)

Time to turn it on (don't forget to cover any viewports/cameras with lead! Also x-rays can pour out of ceramic feedthroughs so point them away from people. It is a good idea to be monitoring for x-rays where any people are present). The basic procedure is:
-Turn on the roughing pump and wait for sufficient backing pressure, turn on the diffusion or turbo pump and wait for it to fully warm up or achieve running speed -Throttle the chamber back (with the valve between the diffusion/turbo pump and the chamber) -Ever so slightly open the needle valve to the deuterium tank -Turn up the high voltage until either plasma establishes on the camera, or you've reached 40kv and nothing has happened (don't forget, you only get one chance in your life to screw up with voltages of this degree) -If nothing has happened, keep admitting more gas and the pressure should keep going up. Plasma should form around 40kv at about 10-15 microns of deuterium.
If all goes well, you should see on your camera the image below, and you should be detecting neutrons at this point.
Operation is quite a balancing act, since the voltage is controlled by both the power supply, but also by Paschen's Curve and Ohm's Law relating to the pressure in the chamber. Great patience is required to "Get the hang of it", but after doing so it becomes quite simple to run. Operation can be aided by an ion-gun which will not be discussed in this article.
