2024.05.16 08:09 Pleasant_Injury_ My boss is being killed by taxes

Long story short: Our accountant shot himself in the head and committed suicide in January. He still has people working for his firm.
Owner hasn’t gotten a new firm because her co owner uses this firm for his own small biz and she wanted to wait til tax szn was over. We are in WA state. She claims 30% of the income has been being taken out by this company for “taxes.” Tax firm won’t answer phone calls from her. Evade any contact explaining what the taxes are for. I told her to get a new firm. She is looking into it. We are on our 3rd year. 250k a year. 2 ft employees, 2 are 30 a week and one is 15 hrs a week (on disability) for a total of 5 employees. I could prob break down hours per month but I don’t think that’s the issue.
For 250k a year is it normal that we are losing 30% our income on taxes and then add in building rent, employee wages, heating/cooling bills.
???? Does this sound normal to you ???? Like wtf
Dog daycare. So dog services are taxed

2024.05.16 08:05 Jibbsss Any teachers concerned with the narrative arguing against the lack of responsibility of students?

I've seen so many people (usually on the younger side) proposing a story/narrative that the only reason academic rates have fallen is solely due to systemic structures. This would include things like federal/state/local test and teaching techniques. School shootings happening more often. Less government funding. Teachers not letting children chose what they want to do, ect.
However when I was in k-12, there were kids who I simply have a extremely hard time believing that they would remotely try at all even if all systemic issues were solved tomorrow. Some kids just want to laugh at the teacher, get in fights, stay on their phone, and run home to play video games for 12 hours.
There are some who genuinely want to believe that children shouldnt be forced to take math/science classes by their schools, parents, and teachers. In fact they believe these things hold back children, and children should be given maximum control for their own education. Lets be serious, this teaching method will create 1,000,000,000 uneducated individuals with horrible life skills for every 1 mathematician.
Do any teachers in this subreddit have any concerns about this growing narrative that so many people (especially the young) are starting to believe whole heartily in?

2024.05.16 07:44 shrubbery_herring Threshold for filing tax return if foreign passive income but no employment income

I'm trying to work out the finer points of when a tax return is required for a person who has no employment income but does have foreign source passive income.
The general requirement is described in Section 1-5 of the 2023 Income Tax Guide, under category 4, "Persons other than the above". It says that "The amount of tax calculated based on your total amount of income after subtracting all of your deductions including the basic exemption is greater than the amount of your credit for dividends."
To work out the finer points of how this is applied, I would like to consider two scenarios...
Scenario 1: Consider that the person only has income from foreign source dividends and interest income, and the total taxable income is less than ¥24M. In that case, the income would all be covered under the aggregate taxation method and the ¥480k basic exemption would apply. So it should follow that if the foreign income is less than ¥480k, then (referring to section 1-5, category 4) the "amount of tax" will be zero and therefore it is not required to file a tax return. Is this right?
Scenario 2: Consider that the person only has capital gains income. The 2023 Income Tax Guide says that this falls under separate self assessment taxation, but does not explain whether any exemptions or deductions apply. The Guide says that this is covered on page 3 of the form, and gives a dead end statement on where to get more information. I am looking on the NTA site for details or even a high level summary, but so far I haven't found it. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there, as the title said I don't know if this is ever discussed, but seems the portfolio backtester shows favorable results with annual rebalancing
My reasoning behind this than options to hedge:
Is there any possible risks to consider? I think for TMF the high interest rates situation + I think the sentiment throughout the past few years is that TMF was working in the past 15 years or so if they were there during that time, but that doesn't apply now. What risks is it involved in that I'm blinded to?https://www.portfoliovisualizer.com/backtest-portfolio?s=y&sl=4YElwQ1ySa2vVGVnI5UvSl

2024.05.16 07:29 Old-Attitude-9674 I had a tax issue with the state.

The title is a bit misleading. IRS sent me a letter saying I did not file my state taxes in 2017… therefore I owe many many thousands for the pay I received that year. This came of course after we paid this years taxes. Sooo I venture back to a time when I used TurboTax and sure as shit, I filed my federal but my state had been rejected. So damn, this is my fault. I find my w-2 from that year hoping there is a way out of this. Use the website on the bill they sent me. It was easy enough to use, uploaded pictures of the forms and an explanation with very low expectations even saying I was willing to pay whatever late fees and so on. Received a letter today from the IRS and got that feeling of dread. They solved the problem, received a bill for 0.00 just couldn’t file for a refund as I missed the filing deadline. Just thought I’d share a small win and give props to the state for a change.

2024.05.16 07:28 sentrybot619 Should I payoff my vehicle before buying home?

Total Divorce Cash Out - $120,000
Gross Income $5,416 per month Net Income $3,400 per month
As part of a tentative divorce settlement, I'm getting a $75,000 buyout of the marital home, plus approx $45,000 in more cash. However, as part of the settlement, I can't get full 50/50 custody of our children until I'm able to get at minimum a 3 bedroom home (not apartment) in the same postal code as the marital home. There are very few homes in this area that are anywhere near my budget.
When we originally separated, I took our new'ish Subaru Outback and my ex took our Pacifica Minivan. Unfortunately, once our younger of 3 child's car seat became front facing, I couldn't safely fit all 3 seats in the Outback, forcing me to sell/trade the vehicle. The used car market was horrendous, and used minivans in particular were incredibly overpriced. At the time, I was looking at $25k-$30k for a 4+ year old minivan with 60k+ miles on it, plus interest rates of around 8%, and little if any warranty. Being that I could get a new minivan with a 10y100k mile warranty for about $10,000 more at a much lower rate, 3.8%, and tax savings by trading my Outback in, I worked out a deal with a local dealer to give me private sale KBB value on the Outback in trade, discount a 2022 model (when 2023's were on the lots for 6 months already), and throw in the dealer extended warranty. My payments came out to $733 per month. Wasn't ideal, the merits of my decision is a topic for another day, and I hated to do it, but for my kids' safety and to find a reliable vehicle, this seemed to be the best course of action. I've had it for a year. The payoff amount is $32,000.
I have approx $17,000 in credit card debt, which is mostly due to legal fees from the divorce. To pay the cards down to be less than 30% of my credit limit, I need $12,400. I fucking hate credit cards, but I also had to pay a lawyer to fight for my custody rights. I get it, I want these cards paid off immediately, and most of the balances are at 0% for at least 5 more months. So I want to pay them off by then and avoid interest charges.
Why do I need to buy a home near the marital home as part of the settlement? The marital home is very close to the children's elementary school, and their school bus picks them up just one block from the home. There are absolutely no homes for sale within a mile radius of the marital home, nor is there anything within the school zone that would put them on the bus route. It's a very busy area, so even if I get a home 10 miles away, it's going to be heavy traffic to/from the school, which will be a twice per day trip, liable to cause me to get stuck in traffic and be late taking/picking up the kids from school. And personally, this time away from my job could have a negative outcome and cause me to work later hours and/or miss meetings. I'm compelled to get a home as close to the school as possible for a multitude of reasons. Saves time, gas, mileage on the minivan, lowers the time I'm away from desk during my work day, etc., not to mention its part of the settlement primarily so that the kids aren't having to spend long times in the car to/from school twice per day when they're used to just hopping on the bus for 10 minutes at the marital home. If I get a home somewhat nearby, I can just take them to the bus stop as usual, and avoid driving to the school at all.
Problem: There's only (3) 3 Bedroom homes for sale in the same town. 1 is a dump and an obvious money pit. 1 is way out of my price range. So that leaves 1. And yes, I know the home could sell before I have a chance to make an offer, but I want to have this thought through in case I have to pursue another opportunity. So, back to the remaining home. They're asking $295,000. It's really nice, new roof, decent sized, well kept flat back yard, and has a completely unfinished basement that provides me the opportunity to work on over time and add some value, as I finished the basement in the marital home and it added about $60,000 to the appraised value after only spending about $30,000. My dad's a contractor and can help me with all the non-licensed work (electrical, plumbing, etc).
I used a mortgage calculator and put in all the values (property tax, HOA fees, home insurance, etc) so I could get a feel for what the mortgage would look like. If I only put 20% down ($59,000), my payment would be approx $2,024. If I put an extra $32,000 down, for a total of $91,000 down, my payment would be approx $1,813, or $211 less per month. 90K or so is about the most I want to put down because I want to set aside some of the settlement money to pay off my credit cards and re-seed my savings that were decimated by legal fees.
The issue is my monthly income is fixed, so while it's obviously better in the long run to put more down on the house now and get less exposure to these high interest rates, if I were to instead pay off my vehicle, which is at 3.8%, and leave my home's down payment at 20%, my monthly spend would be $522 less. This $522 difference could determine whether or not I can fit the monthly mortgage into my budget. Then hopefully a year or two down the line, I can refinance at a lower rate and claw back some savings there.
$91,000 Down $1,813 Mortgage + $733 Car Payment = $2,546 = 47% of gross income $59,000 Down = $2,024 Mortgage + $0 Car Payment = $2,024 = 37% of gross income
*Most lenders want at most 36% percent debt/gross income ratio. So the only way to get close to that is to pay off my car.
Again, in order to get 50/50 custody of my kids, I have to buy a home in the immediate area of the marital home, so my options are limited, and unless a better deal hits the market, I'm going to have to shuffle things around to be able to afford it on a month by month basis. Until I buy a home, I'm looking at every other weekend with my kids, and I can't get back that missed time for any price.
Thoughts? I'm inclined to pay off my credit cards and vehicle, and get out from all debt except for the mortgage. And then refinance when the time is right. It seems the only way I can fit a mortgage into my monthly budget.

2024.05.16 07:28 Witchgirl1232 Help fund a room while we get housing

I hope this is the right sub. If not I apologize and will take down. Long story short, our rental unit became CONDEMNED. It needs electrical re-wiring of the entire place, mold in the floors that's eating away the wood, mold in the walls of the house as well. We have yet to receive a official notice from our new landlords but they advised us to leave asap. I will provide picture copies here if it lets me post. We're trying to save up 3,500$ to purchase a mobile home that we can fix up. We have a fix income of 1,400$ after taxes and I am disabled waiting on social security. If anyone can help here is my PayPal address: PayPal.me/XeniaYee We're also open to advice on what to do. Trying to get to the welfare office to see if we can get help there. I'm currently five months pregnant with our miracle child. Wanting to get out of here asap.
Also I apologize for the bad Grammer. On mobile and tried to rush post before bed.

Wall Street march to record high after cooling CPI
[US stocks powered higher on Wednesday, with all three major indexes jumping to all-time highs after consumer inflation cooled more than expected, lifting hopes for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates sooner.]()
The US consumer price index (CPI) slowed to a 0.3% increase in April, down from 0.4% a month earlier, lower than market expectations for a 0.4% rise, while the annual figure fell to 3.4%, down from 3.5%, in line with forecasts. The core CPI inflation rate eased to 3.6% from 3.8% in March.

Elsewhere on the economic front, US retail sales were unchanged in April, weaker than forecasts for a 0.4% rise.
The slowdown in consumer prices came a day after April producer price inflation came in stronger than expected. Traders now see a 50.5% chance that the US central bank will start cutting rates in September. Treasury yields fell sharply on the CPI news, while the dollar also dropped.
At the New York close, the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrials Average was up 0.9% at 39,908, while the S&P 500 added 1.2% at 5,308, and the Nasdaq Composite ended 1.4% higher at 16,742, all at closing peaks just below earlier intraday records.

2024.05.16 07:24 sylzia Dream OG Loewe mini puzzle!

Dream OG Loewe mini puzzle!
After 2+ years of pining after this bag as a broke grad student, graduating to a corporate job with enough disposable income to build up savings, and working for 1.5 years to score a recent job promotion, the perfect impetus I needed to pull the trigger…I found the Loewe Mini Puzzle completely out of stock in any colors I liked in the US. (How I detest you, Puzzle Edge!)
I thought I had a great lead in Japan (not one but two Loewe stores, including a flagship) but while in Taiwan stumbled across a store…that had this bag in stock! The workers were incredibly kind and patient with my abysmal language skills, and also let me know that there’s no more stock of this bag in Japan. Feeling very lucky right now!
This is the Loewe Puzzle Mini in Tan with the Anagram Strap in Jacquard and Calfskin in Neutral/Tan—online the strap is also available in the US but only with gold hardware. In the US, the bag is listed for $2650 (in ochre and khaki only…boo) and the strap for $750. I paid just under $100k in Taiwanese dollars, which my credit card indicates as $3106 USD total, tax-free for a tidy discount.
The bag perfectly fits a standard iPhone and a few minimal items (think sunscreen stick, eyeliner, Kodak disposable, a pad, Airpod Pros) without being too tight. I was advised to keep the purse filled with tissue paper when not in use so it will maintain its structure. The build quality is incredible and the materials are soft and lovely. I know this bag is not everyone’s cup of tea (basketball accusers, i feel you ahaha) but incredibly pleased with my first luxury purchase!

2024.05.16 07:21 theamazingjml Advice???

I'm in college and I've been using DoorDash as my main source of income and I've done pretty decent with it but this new tier system is absolutely fucking me. I barely get any orders anymore and the ones I get are always some garbage like 7 miles for 4 dollars that takes me outside the zone. Should I just suck it up and take these orders to get to platinum or is that not even worth it? This job was actually nice because I could just work whenever I wanted and the pay wasn't bad at all compared to other jobs available to me at the moment. I'm really at a lose of what to do at this point. I'm at a 60% acceptance rate right now but if it being platinum barely makes me any more money then fuck this. Any and all input is helpful!

2024.05.16 07:13 Ro137 Previous years affect on financial aid

I’m currently planning on applying to my local community college in September of this year. During this and last year I’ve worked a full time job in hvac and have made around $40k in 2023 and a good chunk of that will be made in 2024.
Since FAFSA takes from 2022s tax year when I had no income I receive the full Pell grant with a SAI score of -1500.
During the time I’ve been working I’ve put the vast majority of my money into savings, healthcare and supporting my family. That savings fund is to support myself and my tuition while I pursue school however I’m really concerned that when the 2025-2026 school year comes around and I reapply for FAFSA they’re going to see my income from 2023 and deny me from receiveing the grant because I had income at that time.
Is this how the system works? Should I expect to not receive aid next year and maybe even the year after that?

2024.05.16 07:13 poopyscreamer I just calculated with an auto calculator and it’s totally feasible to have 4 MM by age 45.

I am 27 and only have like 40,000 dollars right now. But my wife and my income is like 170k total and with maxing the tax advantaged accounts and a little on top of that it is entirely possible to be FI early to mid 40’s.
Early 40’s coming from if I work extra and invest. OT pays a fuck ton for me too so once I get settled into my transfer position and am allowed to work extra I definitely will. 12 hours for like 1,450 dollars is great.

2024.05.16 07:12 Pinkmanhardmantofind Rihanna is easily one of the Greatest Artists of all time

"Greatness" when it comes to music, is discography, influence, longevity, hits, impact, Versatility
These all things Rihanna ticks boxes in, Michael Jackson ticks these boxes, as does Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Prince, Bob Marley, Queen, Pink Floyd and many more, hence making these some of Music's greatest Acts, Rihanna belongs up there
While Rihanna does not write or Produce her music, she still curiates, Michael Jackson did not play instruments or write a lot of his songs however that doesn't take away from his Artistry
https://youtu.be/n6N1_sxlBU8?si=VjyeCyuO-xG9KsM2 "We Found Love" by Rihanna (2011) one of the 2010s greatest songs with a Beautiful and Haunting EDM Instrumental, emotionally compelling narrative and Catchy hook with good Vocals
https://youtu.be/2IzNKRg5uZs?si=rRWMisrFSP1Jv084 "Man Down" (2010) a Reggae song, already showing how Versatile Rihanna is, however it's a dark song about a Young Woman taking revenge on a Man who Sexually Assaulted her, her Vocals are amazing here and this song proves her Vocal Range as she blends into Reggae so easily
https://youtu.be/pHQvdENN8GM?si=imvUQP-VBSy0Isan "SOS" (2006) an Amazing R&B hit that Samples the classic 80s hit "Tainted Love" showing Rihanna paying homage to the classics
https://youtu.be/C75J03JXz24?si=cQde35TtjryXuyTf "Dont Stop the Music" (2007) one of the Greatest Dance and Club songs of the last 20 years, where she samples Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin Something" with a Futuristic and Electronic update which sounds amazing, a Classic Sensual Banger
https://youtu.be/xXD5tltX9Pg?si=bP6K2WYobO1N1m5z "Umbrella" (2007) I mean I don't have a lot to say, it's one of the most iconic Pop Songs of all time
https://youtu.be/wmGjajXDHKo?si=QOGaoK4Se0v7GlwV "Disturbia" (2007) a Horrorcore Genre song that WENT BILLBOARD NUMBER 1, what kinda Horrorcore songs goes number 1? This song displays Rihanna's influence by Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and was one of the most groundbreaking songs of the 2000s Popularising Autotune as an artistic effect
https://youtu.be/AjLD4ufmSlE?si=KgR8msbKyoQCRlg- "Shut Up & Drive" (2007) another Classic, this is one of thr greatest Pop Rock songs of the last 20 years, its a great Sensual song that is inspired by a Classic like "Whole Lotta Love" by Zeppelin, and it samples "Blue Monday" which Is a Masterpiece, Shut Up & Drive even has a hint of Grunge influence, again showing Rihanna leaving her comfort zone musically
https://youtu.be/QMP-o8WXSPM?si=WmqZlvMg7GVsJeVI "Love on the Brain" (2016) a brilliant song on Rihanna's last Album, it is influenced by 60s Soul & Blues ballads
Rihanna is one of the most Popular and influential Artists of all time, despite only having an 11 year music Career from 2005 to 2016, Rihanna has managed to become one of the top 10 highest selling Artists in history, the 2nd highest Female Artist ever behind Madonna despite Madonna having a 25 year headstart and Rihanna is creeping up in sales, she has 14 Billboard Number 1s, Beatles in comparison had 21, she's versatile, boundary pushing, has great vocal Range. I feel it's only fair she is worthy of a "Greatest Artists of all time" list
I'm not even sure if this is that unpopular IRL, most people I talk to in real life agree Rihanna is a Musical Legend, but Reddit is not Real Life, Reddit shits on anything Pop that isn't Michael Jackson lol
If I was to rate Rihanna's top 5 Albums
  1. Good Girl Gone Bad (2007) is a 9/10
  2. Loud (2010) is a 9/10
  3. ANTI (2016) is a 8.5/10
  4. Rated R (2009) is a 8/10
  5. Talk That Talk (2011) is a 8/10
She doesn't have a 10/10 Album, like Thriller, Bad, Purple Rain, Led Zeppelin 1, Zeppelin IV, Abbey Road, Dark Side of the Moon and so on, but two 9/10 Albums is insanely impressive, someone like Ed Sheeran has never even made a 7/10 Album
