2024.05.17 02:01 Glittering_Pea2514 Maybe im in a bad mood....

I'm not really enjoying the end of Junior year so far (only part way through the latest episode). I feel like we have enough evidence that the Rat Grinders were at least half corrupted by the teachers (specifically porter), and I cant really justify killing them all on the basis of teen envy BS.
Maybe I've not paid enough attention, or maybe I've just gotten so annoyed at some of the stupider stuff that the BKs got up to earlier in the year that they're not looking all that shiny to me any more, but I don't feel like the RG's deserve the level of nasty that this fight is turning into.
I kinda hope that after the battle, if & when Ankarna & Cassandra are back to their old selves, the RGs can be bought back uncorrupted by the shatter-stars, and at least a couple of them reformed in some later season. I don't feel like this is a Dayne/Penelope situation, but then again maybe its just cause I think Osin is cute and im a bit tired of there being no positive scalies in D20 so far (personal pet peve XD)
Anyway, i just had to get that off my chest. battlemap design is baller as always.

2024.05.16 17:23 bacteria322 SPOILER SEASON 3 & PART 2 PREDICTION

I'm really disappointed with how the Lord Debling storyline and courtship with Penelope turned out. It would have been more intriguing if they had portrayed Debling as obsessed and pining for Penelope for a while, keeping Colin on his toes. I wanted to see Colin distraught and upset over his jealousy and infatuation with Pen. Initially, the audience was led to believe that Debling could actually be falling in love with Pen, but it was later revealed that he was more in love with his line of work and traveling.
Watching Colin beg for Penelope, especially after what he put her through with Marina Crane in season 1, was satisfying. It left Pen emotionally destroyed, and I think the writers gave up on the Debling/Pen storyline too early in the season.
In Part 2, I speculate that news of Pen's identity as Lady Whistledown might reach Cressida, possibly through Eloise. Under parental pressure, particularly from her mother, Cressida might expose this secret to gain an advantage or seek revenge and the reward for revealing LW's identity. I believe that under pressure from Eloise, Pen will try to tell Colin herself about her identity as LW. This revelation could lead to Colin reacting with anger and finding it hard to forgive Pen, especially since he explicitly expressed his hatred towards LW. As a result, we might see a few episodes of Pen pleading and trying to apologize to Colin, given that she has lost two potential high-ranked matches. I wouldn't like to see Pen begging and pining over Colin again, as I feel she has suffered enough. However, I do believe that in the end, Colin's true feelings will overpower his resentment, and he will forgive her.
As for Eloise and Pen, I don't think Eloise would be the one to reveal Pen's identity as LW to the queen; I think she still has too much respect for Pen. However, she may let it slip to Cressida out of anger over her engagement with Colin. I also believe that Eloise will learn why Pen decided to write that terrible column about her in order to save her family's reputation, but maybe by then, it would be too late, and the news about Pen and LW's identity might have already reached Cressida out of anger from Eloise.
My only concern with this scenario is the potential fallout from Pen's exposure as Lady Whistledown. If the Ton discovers her identity, it could jeopardize the entire show, as the Ton relies on Lady Whistledown for their weekly dose of scandal.
Thoughts??

2024.05.15 04:29 Telemachusfar The Human Security Officer, Part 47

Resolution! To that lil' cliffhanger I left off on last time. Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoy! : )
Move?
Don’t move?
Run?
Scream?
Gareth didn’t know what to do. He suddenly realized that that the forest around him had gone very quiet. In fact the only sounds were the burbling river and the crack-hiss of the open fire.
Oh Lumin, quiet…
Understanding bloomed. Quiet was bad because the life that’s evolved in this environment can easily recognize a threat and go into hiding. The information shot through his mind at a million miles an hour, not that it was much use anymore.
The creature seemed poised to strike but sat as still as he was. What was it doing? It had him dead to rights. The ambush was perfect. There was nothing he could do. He certainly wasn’t faster than it. He had no means of fighting it off. Even his biosuit would do little against such sharp teeth. At most it would buy him a few more seconds of agony.
Pen.
His companion came to mind in a flash. Perhaps he should scream. Fleeting was the hope of her saving his life, again. More than that he thought of her own safety. If shouting wouldn’t save his own life, he could at least warn her of the danger. He might give her the advantage of not being ambushed.
Its eyes moved, then its ears. The glowing spheres shot upward, locking onto something behind Gareth. Its ears twitched, aligning to more perfectly take in sound from wherever its eyes were peering.
A voice, as beautiful a voice as he ever did hear, came from behind him. Pen’s voice. She was closer to the fire than to him but still only about fifteen or twenty feet away.
“Look it in the eye. Don’t shake or yell. Just look it in the eye and back away slowly. Don’t turn. Don’t run. Move slowly and deliberately.”
How am I supposed to see where I’m going? What if I fall? Does it even recognize my eyes as eyes? What…
Gareth silenced the questions and did as he was instructed. He magnetized his gaze onto it praying for kind dawns. Slowly he tore his body from its frozen state and began to move. It was awkward. His legs weren’t built for such movement but he managed.
The creature’s eyes shot back to him. White hot fear ripped through him. The urge to freeze again was as intense as anything he’d ever felt but he forced it down, overwriting instinct with logic. Any field has its experts. In situations that deal with said field, you listen to the expert. Specialization. Pen was the expert in this field. Do what she says.
It twitched forward, teeth bared.
“AY!” Pen roared so loud it almost hurt.
The creature jumped back. Its attention shot back to Pen. Gareth kept backing up. Ten feet to where she’d originally been but she’d moved forward. She was right behind him now. A graceful, reassuring hand came to rest on where a shoulder might have been had he had one. He brought a hand of his own up to hers, an attempt to reinforce his increasingly shaking legs.
The thing still sat poised and ready. Watching them. Its glowing eyes darted between them.
“Uhm what now.” Gareth whispered.
“Behind. Me.”
Without breaking her locked gaze on the wolf, she used her hand to push him gently but firmly around her right side. She took another step to position herself directly between them.
“Back. Slowly. Same as before.”
Gareth acquiesced and matched her pace as they both began slowly moving back towards the fire. He noticed he could feel her heartbeat through her wrist. It drummed a rapid but rhythmic tempo against his hand.
A few steps went without movement from the beast but suddenly it started forward. Immediately Pen jolted a bluff forward as she let out another hard and quick yell.
“AY!!”
It twitched back. Its head went down with its front paws and hind legs cocked ready to respond to an attack that never came.
Pen then continued to back the two of them up slowly. Step by step until she came to a stop just within the light of the fire.
“Wait.”
Its reflexive poise had relaxed but it still eyed them, though it made no attempt to close the distance. Its glossy eyes still glowed with reflected firelight.
“What-”
“Just keep watching it.”
The wolf started to move, not forward but to the side. It lead with its head which, again, came low to the ground but its gaze never left them. Its ears twitched around for any hint of sound as it started to circle to its left.
Gareth followed Pen’s lead as she clearly turned her entire body to match its movement. It started to turn and circle back the way it had come. Again, Pen followed it. Gareth spared a second to glance at her face. He was of two minds on what he saw. Partly surprised and partly not at the cold steely stare she was levying on the creature. She almost imparted a tangible weight with just her gaze and the wolf seemingly sensed it. The two hadn’t broken their locked eyes for some time now but as the wolf reached a position back nearer to the berry bush it stopped suddenly. An ear twitched, then twitched again. It still held its gaze, but its head came up. It stuck its nose in the air and sniffed.
Without warning it bounded away into the dark of the forest. The only mark of its position the fast fading crunch of its paws on the dead twigs of the forest floor. In only moments not even that sound could be heard. Pen didn’t move. As such, neither did Gareth. She kept her gaze of the place where its form had melted into tree truck and shadow.
A moment passed.
Then another.
Gareth only waited for her.
Finally, he noticed the small life around them start to pipe up. A squirrel chittered at the base of a tree off to their right. An owl hooted from high branches up to their left. The buzz of insects joined the croaking of frogs by the river.
Pen’s shoulders relaxed. She let out a sigh.
“You good?”
Penelope I have been blown up, thrown out the back of my ship, plummeted to the surface of an unknown planet and now attacked by a wild animal four times my size. All in the span of 48 hours. I'm cursed. There's no other explanation.
“I'm… alive?”
She smacked him on the back a little harder than he could handle. He tumbled forward a step as she spoke.
“That’s victory.”
His nerves finally started to calm.
“Was that a bear?”
She laughed as she sat down.
“Ha! No, not quite. That was a wolf. Basically, the other forest predator to watch out for. Smaller but they hunt in packs.”
“I’m sorry, smaller?”
That thing was five or six times his size. In some respects it was even bigger than Pen, though their differing constructions made comparison difficult.
“Yea. Bears are hefty fuckers.”
“About how much more than that thing, the wolf?”
“Depends on the bear but I dunno, twice? Maybe a bit less maybe a bit more?”
“And your people survived by having to fight something like that?”
“Mm? Oh no. You don’t fight a bear. You leave, expeditiously. I suppose there are a few stories here and there but the lucky few belie an unlucky many.”
“Wait did you say those wolf things hunt in packs? If that’s the case, why was it…?”
“A loner perhaps? They’re social creatures like humans but there are various reasons for finding just one. Ostracized from the pack for whatever reason. Lost. Might have been an old one who decided not to burden their kids, packs tend to be families. Either way, likely not lasting long.”
“Why is that?”
“Lone wolves die. Simple as that. Their strength is in pack strategy. Without it he isn’t going to find much success hunting. He’ll starve. Almost makes you feel bad for the poor guy. It’s not a guarantee though. If he finds another pack and they accept him. Not that I know the situation, keep in mind I’m speculating.”
“If he was starving why’d he wait so long. I couldn’t have stopped him if he tried to bite me.”
“You may have known that, but he didn’t.”
“I didn’t think it was that unclear.”
“For you or me sure but its an animal. You froze staring right at him. To him that’s a display of confidence. You didn’t run, you didn’t turn away. Which would have told him you we’re prey. It’s a gamble on his part. If he attacked and was wrong, it’s the end of the line. So, he wasn’t going to strike unless he was certain we weren’t a threat… or so much of a threat that he felt it was kill us or be killed.”
“So, we kept up the façade and in turn he wasn’t going to risk taking damage that could be fatal. And he ran because he heard or smelled an easier meal somewhere else?”
“Nah he heard me, but the lady were spot on about the old part.”
Gareth whipped around lamenting the strain this constant stress was putting on his body. A gruff looking human strode out from behind a tree. He blended into the surroundings terrifyingly well but now made no attempt to hide himself.
Gareth turned back to Pen who seemed completely nonplussed.
The man chuckled.
“Suppose he weren’t the only one who heard me?”
“He definitely heard you before I did but I know what boots on wet clay sounds like.”
The man looked Pen over.
“Mmmm,” He offered with a respectful nod, “Well you’s definitely the ones they’re lookin’ for.”
“They?” Gareth asked standing.
“Yuh. That Captain Deag. Dog lookin, friendly? Said they were missing a little one and a big human woman. And if you ain’t a scrawny little fella and she ain’t an imposing som’bitch then I’m blind.”
Pen smirked.
“How far are we?”
“Bout twenty minutes that way.” He stuck a fat thumb behind him.
“Is everyone okay?” Gareth asked.
“I think so. Wasn’t no talk of casualties. I’ll say you gave us a helluva’ scare soaring right over the town. Landed just past us.”
“Thank goodness… and apologies if we-”
The man held up a hand.
“Was plenty of that already.”
“Alright…” Gareth turned a bit sheepish.
An awkward silence stirred for a few second before the man broke it.
“Well? You want to go see your friends or would ya rather sleep in the dirt another night?”

2024.05.14 17:02 Ok-Pianist1211 S2E7: "Harmony"

My Goodness, I really can't imagine that we've made it to the penultimate episode of season 2. We're just two days away from the premiere, we've seen the first five minutes of the episode which feature Benedict heavily, and the red carpet was last night. I really did not think we'd ever get here.
"Harmony" finds the Bridgertons and the Sharmas embroiled in scandal and ousted by society after the fallout from Anthony and Edwina's aborted wedding. Eloise is falsely accused of being Lady Whistledown by the Queen herself, leaving Penelope between a rock and a hard place. With that in mind, let's get into it.
Benedict makes his first appearance in this episode seated in the Bridgerton drawing room with his sketchbook. He groans loudly when his mother suggests the family all promenade together. He asks Anthony if there is something more he should know regarding his brother's situation when Anthony grumbles that a respectable family is headed by a gentleman, but Anthony rebuffs his brother's offer to help. I feel like we see this all the time in the show: Benedict offering to lend a hand to Anthony, or attempting to connect with him, but Anthony doesn't often accept his brother's help.
Benedict later promenades with the family, looking tight-lipped, like he knows before the rest of his family what's coming. Still though, he smiles, because Benedict I've learned in this rewatch is a master at not letting things get to him. This comes to a boiling point in the finale, and I believe we will see it continue in season three as well (but... more on that tomorrow). After Eloise's stand off with the Queen, we see Benedict again, always at Anthony's side as they walk together through Hyde Park, looking just lovely as he often does.
Just shy of the twenty minute mark, we find Benedict enjoying the revelry of his art school life, sitting next to Tessa, when Anthony stops by to see him. Anthony appears disappointed to find Benedict partying rather than studying, and when he inquires if Benedict does this every night, he groans and asks, "Did you come to admonish me?" before pouting. Anthony reminds Benedict that being the second son doesn't completely exempt him from duty, and Benedict catches on that his brother's attitude has something to do with Kate. Benedict finally admits out loud that he notices how Anthony looks at her. He tells Anthony that he should do with his life what Benedict does with his art: remember that it's simply a matter of perspective. Anthony coldly accuses Benedict of "taking the tea" again before leaving his brother behind. This scene is very telling of their relationship. It seems they can never really get on the same page: when Benedict offers help, Anthony doesn't want to hear it, and when Anthony seeks him out, he's in an inebriated state that leads Anthony to wave off anything his brother says. It's a tale as old as time, the ballad of the heir and the spare. One honor bound by responsibility, the other merely waiting on the sidelines for the day he might be needed. It's obvious that Benedict is confident Anthony isn't going anywhere in how he leans into the parties, drugs, drinks, and women (or, really, woman, singular, as we discussed yesterday). But underneath it all is in fact the soul of an artist who sees more than he lets on, and may even be better at managing society than Anthony himself.
Later, as Violet discusses her Harmony Ball in the drawing room, Eloise and Benedict play chess off to the side until Eloise sticks her head out the window, sweating from stress. Benedict then suggests Violet change the theme of the ball.
Finally the day of the Harmony Ball arrives. Benedict descends the steps of Bridgerton House, not exactly looking surprised that the plan has failed. He approaches Anthony, insisting he doesn't want to be around the misery and decides to head to his studio. Though, Anthony finally takes his advice, saying he's looking at things with a new perspective, and tells Benedict to stay for a dance. We get the lovely moment where the Bridgertons and Sharmas engage in the country dance. Benedict first dances with Eloise, looking quite happy, and this may be the first time Eloise is happy to be dancing as well. Benedict's next partner is Hyacinth, followed by Violet. I love that he dances with his two younger siblings and his mother, because it just shows how much he does care for his family, ultimately seeking them out more than the others in the room. This is only the second time in the show that we see Benedict dancing in full clarity, and it's such a wonderful moment, one of my favorites from the series. When the Bridgertons learn why no one is at the ball following the Whistledown paper arriving, Benedict looks worried for his sister and his family in the background. When Eloise runs from the room, he and Colin exchange worried looks, and when Anthony goes as well, Benedict turns to him, lifting his arms in question of exactly what is happening.
This is the last we see of Benedict before the season two finale, and while he didn't necessarily have a lot of screen time here, the time he does have is telling. Benedict's word for this episode is "perspective." We learn that Benedict is always taking perspective into consideration when working on his art, but also that perhaps Benedict's perspective on his family and brother is a bit wider than we originally thought. We learn in this episode that Benedict suspected Anthony's feelings for Kate all along, and we also see him being a bit more privy to the fact that Violet's plans to right the family's reputation may not work they way they wish it to. It's Benedict who finally gets Anthony to see things differently, if only for a moment, and in turn, it's because of Benedict that the Bridgertons and Sharmas have a mere moment of pleasure when they all dance together. It's a lovely notion that Benedict is kind of a harbinger of joy in that sense. But as we enter the finale, we do so with the awareness that Benedict's happiness as we've seen it the last three episodes is fleeting.
Tomorrow is the very last day of our Benedict focused rewatch, and I really don't have words to explain how crazy it is that we're so close to having more Benedict scenes to break down soon! And who knows... we may be merely eight episodes away from meeting Sophie! Even if Benedict himself doesn't meet her yet. See everyone tomorrow for "The Viscount Who Loved Me."
Best Benedict quote from this episode: "Things may seem bleak now, Brother. But if I'm learning anything from my art studies, it's that it is almost always a matter of... perspective. I look at my art, and if I do not like what I see, I may always alter the color palette, but I certainly do not toss the entire design aside. Perhaps you, too, could do the same in your own life."

2024.05.13 17:12 Ok-Pianist1211 S2E6: "The Choice"

Today marks day 6 of our Benedict emphasized rewatch, and honestly I am just so stunned at how quickly this all went. Rewatching one episode a day is something I highly recommend for y'all next season, it really helped close the gap these last two weeks. Without sounding preachy, I'll also say that it helped me gain some perspective on some things, like yesterday's rant about people always calling Benedict a rake when he really isn't. Sometimes I feel like when we binge, plots move quicker and things that feel like happened "fast," aren't happening as fast as we think they are. It's part of the reason I do miss the days when one episode of a show would come out every week, and I love that The Summer I Turned Pretty over on Amazon does this. Apple TV+ does it too, and I know Netflix won't soon be moving to that format (they seem to really like the two part splits), I would be among those who wouldn't hate that TBH. I know I'm in the minority, but it's just my opinion!
Alright, after that long preamble, "The Choice" follows the day of Anthony's wedding to Edwina, Eloise treading on dangerous waters regarding her relationship with Theo, and Penelope worrying about her friend's choices. Recalling what I remember of this episode, which like I said yesterday isn't a favorite of mine, I'm worried this may not feature a ton of the second Bridgerton son. But, all that being said, let's dive in.
We see Benedict for the first time this episode and Anthony's "bachelor party," poking fun at Anthony for many things, including but not limited to: how he rushed the wedding along, proclaiming his duties, and little Anthony's running around who also proclaim their duties. He lifts a toast to Kate, who he calls "The Gatekeeper." I wonder if Benedict had an inclination about Anthony's feelings for Kate, and was trying to prod the information out him. As I said yesterday, you can see the difference in Benedict after his acceptance to the art academy; he just seems so much lighter and happier, like nothing in the world could touch him or trouble him. While I'm sure the libations in this scene help the fact, it's important to note that Benedict "distinguishing" himself has certainly made an impact.
Next Benedict sighting is in the Bridgerton foyer as they await to leave for Anthony's wedding. He is drinking, again, this time sitting close to Eloise. When Violet asks him to "undo" whatever he has done to Colin, Benedict offers the third brother his flask so he can get drunk again to avoid his hangover. Again, Violet requests that her second son check on another sibling when she asks Ben to check in on Anthony, but he emerges before Ben can seek him out. It's obvious that Violet depends on Benedict to be the one to kind of "calm" Anthony, likely because he is the calmest and most level-headed sibling.
Serving as Best Man to Anthony, Benedict is next found brushing Anthony like a prize pony. When Daphne enters the room, expressing her doubts over whether the day would really come (notably without her husband which will never not be so obvious), Benedict watches his siblings like a tennis match or a telenovela, asking Anthony if Daphne doesn't like his bride. However, Anthony kicks him out, and we get the sassiest Benedict moment in recorded history, where he throws his head back and groans, placing the brush on the counter as he glares at Daphne, and sassily strides out of the room. Before being ejected, however, he was enjoying the drama so much it's hilarious.
Benedict stands at Anthony's side during the ceremony as his best man. If you watch his face as the archbishop is speaking, he looks like he's actually considering the words. Particularly over the bit about "satisfying men's carnal lusts," he looks like he's actually taking the words in. He looks so upset for Anthony when Edwina runs off, it's so sweet.
When Anthony convenes with the rest of the Bridgertons following Edwina's departure, Benedict is actually doing his best to hold it down, offering Anthony a drink to calm down, and insisting to his family that maybe he needs some space, which he gratefully takes. Benedict, again, shows his level-headedness, being calm in a crisis moment and knowing when his siblings need space. Also, where is Francesca meant to be this season? Last year she was off practicing piano with Aunt Winnie, but did they really give no explanation for her not being at Anthony's wedding?
This is the last time we see Benedict significantly in this episode, which I'm sorry, just drags. There is little action in "The Choice," almost entirely conversation between characters who have unresolved feelings: Colin and Pen, Violet and Lady Danbury, the Sharmas, Bridgertons, and QC, Kate, Edwina, and Mary, Edwina and Anthony, and finally, Anthony and Kate. It's just so much talking and not a lot happening, it always bores me. And plus, there's so little Benedict! The moments we do get of him are, as they always are, lovely.
Tomorrow we revisit the penultimate episode of season two, "Harmony," which is a favorite of mine! See you all then as we wind this series down to a close.
Best Benedict quote from this episode: "It's a simple remedy, if you continue to drink, there can be no after effects."

Intrusive thought
… do you think, based on what Shonda says here, that they will try to start production of s4 without announcing whose season is? 🤔

2024.05.13 04:30 ApatosaurusHans DIA Area Store Report

I've never really explored the shops near the airport outside of that Costco, and happened to have time after my flight came in today to poke around since I was in that part of town.
Tower Liquor - Don’t bother, anything good is marked up behind the counter. Half convenience store half liquor store. Rest of whiskey selection is primarily shelfers.
Solomon - standard shelfer selection with Wellers in the 300 range.
Tower Liquors (with an Liquors with an 's') - Ok. 129 horse juice. 150 (?) EHT Small Batch. Both just out on the shelf that peasants can look at and even touch. Gasp. Blue / Black (and maybe one more) Wellers 200-250 in the case.
Prices all over on other stuff... like TinCup 14 for close to $100 - that didn't really make sense to me but whatever. Other stuff was solidly MSRP. Several Little Books in close to 200, but hey, they were present. If I was local to that area, I wouldn't mind occasionally passing through after a King Soopers run in the same lot, but don't really see myself going back regularly.
Green Valley - overpriced Weller green and Blantons for 200 something. Immediate turn off. Mixed selection with meh pricing otherwise. Would not make return trip.
DIA Warehouse - Evans & Pike 100-130 (haven't seen this before, seems to be old primarily sourced/blended stuff from the same group as Mashbuild?), Sagamore Reserve Cask Finishes 80ish, Several RY3 60-120, Kings County selection, Bardstown standards, EC a124 80. As long as you want standard stuff, prices aren’t too bad. Like, I could see if you were an out of state-er coming in for a vacation and wanted to hit a store near the airport before you really got going... wouldn't be bad. Allocated, however, requires dumb points system. If that’s what you are looking for, unless you are local and that’s your shop, then I'd move on... which is what I did.
Green Valley - EC a123 80, various Penelopes, decent variety range mostly msrp, except Buff 36, EW SiB 34 - almost picked this up.
DIA Costco - Old Elk SB 7 years - 70, Leopold Dickel Collab 74.97 with a death star. I feel like that one has been death starred for a while but somehow it's still around. Perhaps the .97 is the true end of stock? I've heard it's more Dickel than Leopold, is that your experience?
At this point, I got tired of the torrential rain and called it quits.
Happy Hunting!

2024.05.13 04:11 KatieQRS Full Text Nicola Coughlan in Sunday's LA Times

There it was, on the table in Nicola Coughlan’s apartment — a microscopic undergarment that loomed large in the actor’s mind.
The “Bridgerton” costume department had sent Coughlan home with a piece of intimacy wear that was essentially a strapless thong that would cover the bare essentials of her body during an upcoming love scene.
It would be her first time ever acting in such a scene, in a series known globally for its sexy yet empowering bedroom romps, and it would require her to be almost totally naked in front of people she’d worked with for years. Coughlan was understandably terrified. One night, she poured herself a margarita and summoned the liquid courage to try on the tiny sliver of fabric.
“I went to the bathroom and looked in the full-length mirror. I was like, ‘Absolutely not.’ I hid it down the bottom of the laundry basket,” Coughlan recalled on a cold morning in January at Netflix’s offices in Manhattan. “I was like, ‘How am I going to do this?’”
Coughlan eventually got over her nerves. Much to her surprise, she found the process of filming the scenes with her co-star Luke Newton creatively satisfying — liberating, even. “By the end of the day, we were both lying under a blanket, not clothed, just chillin’. We were like, ‘This is why nudists do it,’” said Coughlan, who speaks in a rapid, melodious accent that only adds to her natural exuberance.
While discussing the arc of her career, she goes on joyful digressions, praising everything from Mrs. Renfro’s salsa to Ryan Gosling’s performance in the forgotten teen series “Breaker High” to “Saturday Night Live,” which she’s just attended for the third time and hopes to host one day (are you listening, Lorne Michaels?).
She is nothing if not enthusiastic, and she brings this level of passion to Season 3 of “Bridgerton,” the first half of which will return to Netflix on Thursday. Until now, her character, Penelope Featherington, has been content to be a wallflower in the ballrooms of Regency London, allowing her to observe and secretly write a society scandal sheet under the pseudonym Lady Whistledown.
But this season will focus on Penelope as she — spoiler alert — consummates her long-simmering crush on Colin Bridgerton (Newton) in a friends-to-lovers storyline with distinct rom-com overtones. Penelope’s move into the center of the narrative also meant that Coughlan faced new pressures as the lead in one of the most watched and dissected shows on Netflix.
“With Penelope this season, it felt like there were so many things that were reflected in real life. The whole theme of her stepping out of the shadows and into the light, and not feeling quite ready — I felt like I had to do that,” said Coughlan.
“It was really challenging. It was terrifying. It was cathartic. It was a million and one things,” she added. “I loved it.”
She juggled “Bridgerton” with an edgy turn in “Big Mood,” a “Fleabag”-esque dark comedy released last month on Tubi. On top of that, she also had a small role in the biggest box office hit of 2023, “Barbie” — she wanted to do more but, alas, her schedule was too packed — and filmed a guest appearance in the “Doctor Who” Christmas special to be released later this year.
It amounts to a long-simmering breakout moment for Coughlan, who is 37 but thanks to a preternaturally dewy complexion often plays characters who are much younger than she is, like a Catholic high school student in the Troubles-themed sitcom “Derry Girls.”
“It was very exciting to play grown women. But I was like, ‘Can I do that?’ Even in drama school, they would always cast me as the random kid, like, there was an Ibsen play called ‘Little Eyolf,’ and I had to play Eyolf. I was like, ‘This is gonna be me forever.’”
Raised in County Galway on the western coast of Ireland, she grew up liking whatever her older siblings were into — whether it was Nirvana or “Wayne’s World.” When her sister starred in the school play, Coughlan showed up in a sequined vest, looking like a little Liza Minnelli — as if she knew she also wanted to be onstage. (She still has a taste for eccentric glamour: Despite the wintry gloom, she’s decked out in a gold spangled dress and a cloud-like ruffled bolero.)
At age 9, she scored her first professional gig, a movie called “My Brother’s War” starring James Brolin. She got the day off from school, but she wanted more. “I used to look at the Olsen twins. I was like, ‘God, look, look at where they are,’” she joked. As a teenager, she did regular voice work in cartoons. Her father, who was in the Irish army (as a teenage cadet, he took part in U.S. President Kennedy’s funeral in 1963), and mother, a stay-at-home parent, were supportive but also baffled by their youngest child’s dramatic streak. “It’s really not in my family at all,” Coughlan said.
After graduating from the National University of Ireland Galway, Coughlan enrolled in a foundational course at the Oxford School of Drama in England, where she quickly bonded with fellow student Camilla Whitehill.
“We were the only people there that really cared about things being funny,” said Whitehill, a playwright who would go on to create “Big Mood” as a vehicle for her old drama school friend. “Everyone else just wanted to do plays where their family had died, or whatever.”

Coughlan, ever the pop culture connoisseur, introduced Whitehill to the sitcom “Arrested Development.”
“She’s one of those people who, if she thinks you will like something, she will make you watch it. And she is — annoyingly — usually right,” added Whitehill. (More recently, Coughlan urged her friend to catch up on “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.” “It’s such an easy one to sell to people. I’m like, ‘One of them is a cult leader who’s married to her granddad; are you in or are you out?’” Coughlan said.)
They both eventually landed in London, where “neither of us was successful at all for our whole 20s,” said Whitehill, who would often cast Coughlan in “my bad unpaid short plays at pubs,” including one where Coughlan played a cat.
“You leave drama school, which is a lovely, cozy bosom where you get to do the thing you love every day. Then you go, ‘Hang on. Thousands of people leave drama school every year, and they want to do the exact job I do.’ It seems so improbable that you’ll make a living doing it,” said Coughlan. “I felt like a loser at so many points.”
One such nadir came when she was working at a frozen yogurt shop at a mall in West London and the cheap jeans she wore as part of her uniform tore “right up the butt crack.” It was sobering, she said. “I was like, ‘This is not the life I wanted.’”
By the time she was in her late 20s, she’d moved back home and was working for an optician in Galway. Then she saw a listing for an open casting call for a festival of plays being put on by the Old Vic Theatre. Even though she was broke, she flew back to London for the audition and landed a part in a play called “Jess and Joe Forever.”
It marked a turning point for Coughlan, who was soon cast as studious teen Clare Devlin in Channel 4’s “Derry Girls,” a project she was drawn to because of its vividly drawn female characters.
“They were all really distinct — young women who were ballsy and foul-mouthed,” she said. She convinced herself that the show would flop because “people hate women trying to be funny.” Instead, the show was a massive hit in the U.K. and earned a devoted following in the U.S. when it was picked up by Netflix.
Then, Shonda Rhimes came calling about “Bridgerton.” After a single audition, Coughlan was cast as Penelope, a thoughtful, sharp-witted young woman with an overbearing mother and tacky, dim-witted sisters. Season 1 was released in late 2020, when much of the world was staying home because of the COVID-19 pandemic-related closures, and it became a sensation.
Whitehill recalls going out with her friend once restrictions had lifted in the U.K. and sensing how much had shifted. “It’s such a weird, un-put-into-words-able experience to watch someone you know for such a long time become globally famous,” she said. The fact that Coughlan didn’t find success straight out of school “has grounded her significantly, which means that she doesn’t let it go to her head.”
Success has not come without complications, however, like the relentless media scrutiny around Coughlan’s physical appearance. “It’s really hard and feels [like] s—,” she said.
In 2018, she wrote an essay for the Guardian responding to a theater critic who described her character in a London production of “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” as “an overweight little girl.” Coughlan is determined to push back against this kind of casual body-shaming because, she said, “I grew up at a time where it was so overt. There was the circle of shame for cellulite [in magazines] — just horrific, horrific messaging.”
It’s also why this season of “Bridgerton,” which celebrates the allure of a character often overlooked as a wallflower, is so meaningful to Coughlan — and why she suspects it will resonate with so many viewers. Rhimes and showrunner Jess Brownell decided Season 3 should deviate from the timeline in Julia Quinn’s novels and focus on Penelope and Colin — a couple known to fans as “Polin.”
“We’ve watched Colin not quite understand that Penelope has a crush on him for two seasons. You can only play that dynamic out for so long before it gets frustrating,” said Brownell.
Stepping into the lead meant Coughlan would need to be on set nearly every day for eight months straight. But if she was overwhelmed at first, she didn’t let on. “She just seemed so game and ready for anything on set,” said Brownell. “If anything, I just noticed how seriously she was taking her preparation.”
Coughlan was insightful and collaborative, said Brownell, sharing an endless stream of ideas about her character in a WhatsApp group chat with Newton and Brownell. She had suggestions for specific music cues and for Penelope’s makeover, which sees her ditching her tight red poodle curls and garish citrus-hued gowns for loose waves and cool blues and greens. Coughlan is also very plugged into the fandom, and she advocated for including a scene, important to novel readers, in which Penelope calls Colin “Mr. Bridgerton.”
As if that weren’t enough, she even found time to bake fresh Irish soda bread and bring it to set.
This season is “a lot lighter and more playful than we’ve been able to be in the past,” Brownell added. The writing leans into Coughlan’s strengths as a comedic performer, particularly her knack for awkward banter, a skill she deploys as Penelope throws herself into the London social season in a bid to find a husband.
Coughlan, who enjoyed being, as she put it, “the weirdo in the background” for the first two seasons of “Bridgerton” and who idolizes women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig, said it was a thrill “to play Penelope as goofy and terrible with men.”
Like Coughlan, Newton was nervous about filming the love scenes but found the anxiety quickly dissipated after the first take. “We both had a similar outlook — it’s like doing comedy because you’re having to put yourself out there and feel exposed and risk something,” said Newton (who watched “Hamilton” at Coughlan’s recommendation and loved it, just as she predicted.) Because of how these moments focus on consent and emotional intimacy, “It was essential that we were friends,” he said.
The co-stars were especially heartened to hear from a burly security guard named Dave who has worked on “Bridgerton” since Season 1 and was moved by the romance he watched them act out on set.
“He came to Luke and I and said, ‘I don’t normally watch shows like this. Something about this season is very special, and I’m very proud of you,’” Coughlan recalled.
For several weeks, Coughlan was filming “Bridgerton” and “Big Mood” at the same time. She coped with the stress by watching “Vanderpump Rules” from the beginning.
“It’s a testament to how nosy I am that I heard people talking about Scandoval, had no frame of reference and was like, ‘Well, I need to know,’” said Coughlan, now a superfan who recently threw a “Vanderpump”-themed housewarming party and made a beeline to take a selfie with Ariana Madix when she was at “SNL.” It’s not just escapism: She also finds creative inspiration in reality TV personalities, channeling some of Lala Kent’s mannerisms into her character in “Big Mood.” “You forget how f— weird people are, how bizarre they can be,” she said.
In January, Coughlan had not yet seen the new season of “Bridgerton.” But by phone in early May, she said she’d finally watched the episode in which Colin and Penelope sleep together, nervously, by herself in a hotel room. Once again, the anticipation was worse than the thing itself.
“I laughed and cried and I was like, ‘Oh, my God, it’s amazing,’” she said. “They’re not titillating just to be titillating, even though we hope they are sexy. There’s so much about female pleasure and positive sexual experiences, and we don’t get enough of that onscreen.”
Coughlan has reached a bittersweet crossroads on “Bridgerton,” now that her character’s big season has wrapped and she will soon return to being “the weirdo in the background.” But she has no regrets.
“We left it all on the pitch. There’s nothing I wanted to do this season that I didn’t get to do,” she said. “And that’s a rare thing.”

2024.05.12 21:53 Tiberius-Kirk Fusion Friday, May 17th, 2024 - Corman Produces The Best

We had so much Roger Corman content we wanted to play that we've derailed May's plans, luckily nobody was getting much out of that. Corman was more than a writedirector, he was also a prolific producer who fostered young talent -- if it could be done cheap and under budget. He mentored so many well-known filmmakers (aka put them through the wringer of churning out crap) in their early years that it became known as the "Roger Corman Film School".
We've recently done films from Jonathan Demme (Crazy Mama), Martin Scorsese (Boxcar Bertha), Ron Howard (Grand Theft Auto), Penelope Spheeris (Suburbia), Jim Wynorski (Big Bad Mama II), and Peter Bogdanovich (The Wild Angels), and James Cameron (Battle Beyond the Stars) so tonight we've got...
We are starting at 8:00pm Central.

2024.05.11 23:07 Strange-Bet-3786 Theory: Lady Whistledown angst as a red herring

This post will allude to spoilers from Season 3 episode 1 per the Bowral screenings! Proceed with caution.
I'm supposed to be working on an assignment for college but I am of course thinking about Polin instead lol, so here's just a theory I thought of while procrastinating.
I recently saw some discussion theorising that the Lady Whistledown reveal (to Colin specifically) might be linked to Penelope's confession that she has in fact loved him all of these years, and that the latter might be want prompts Colin to forget his anger and forgive her for the former.
It got me thinking about the showrunners decision to insert this highly antagonistic dynamic between Colin and Lady Whistledown into the show, which I've been wondering about since getting the episode 1 spoilers. Colin's feelings towards Whistledown iirc have been fairly neutral so far. Yes she torpedoed his relationship with Marina, but I don't remember getting the feeling that he held much anger specifically towards Whistledown for that. His anger and hurt was (rightfully) directed at Marina. And as for Eloise, I'm sure he was upset on her behalf but seemingly no more than the rest of the family.
So why does he suddenly hate her so much? Yes she does land a huge hit to his ego. And yes it's for drama's sake, and I also agree with others that it cleverly sets up a kind of enemies to lovers romance plot between Colin and Whistledown that will run parallel to the main friendship to lovers story. But I'm also thinking it may turn out to be a red herring of sorts.
As I said, Colin's grudge against Whistledown is mostly new. Regardless, it's not the big 'reveal' that viewers have been fixating on when watching Colin and Pen's interactions throughout Seasons 1 and 2. It is undoubtedly something important that she is keeping from him, and it definitely matters, but the real big secret that has been the elephant in the room behind all of Colin and Penelope's interactions so far, is Penelope's feelings for Colin, and how long she's had them. That's the reveal viewers have been waiting for all this time. That's the big secret that people have been waiting to see Colin react to since Season 1. Which is why I'm theorising that part of the purpose of building up the Whistledown reveal to Colin so much is actually a clever way of distracting the us from the real reveal that we have been waiting for, and therefore will make it hit that much harder when we finally get it.
Which is why I think that the two will be directly linked. Yes, Colin is going to have a very strong initial reaction to the Whistledown reveal, he is going to be furious, as per what Luke has said. But I think that particular angst may be more quickly resolved than we might think, as it will lead directly to the real emotional denouement, which I think will be Penelope confessing her love, and how long she's had it. The latter will serve as a catalyst to resolve the former, as Colin realises that every decision Penelope has made, while not always right, has been made out of love.
Anyway, that's just something I thought of, could be completely off the mark, but feel free to let me know your thoughts of you like. We're nearly there folks, so excited!

2024.05.11 08:31 Confused-Cloud19 I love when NPC's are pregnant at their weddings.

So NPC's are considered married to each other when they get engaged and the wedding ceremony is only a formality, AND you can only have 1 funeral/wedding ceremony per day.
Which means sometimes there can be a small delay between them getting married and having the ceremony. So every now and then you'll see the bride/groom-to-be walking around around with a pregnant belly and I find it funny every time I notice it.
Poor Rowland Smith and Penelope Lloyd had such a big delay between getting married and their wedding that Rowland gave birth to their second kid the day of their ceremony. (They got engaged just after smallpox killed like 10 people and there was a couple of weddings planned so there was already a big wait for them, but then the day before when their wedding was supposed to happen my character got engaged. Turns out when you get engaged your ceremony will happen the next day and if someone else is already supposed to be married that day (in this case Rowland & Penny) you will take over their slot and they will be delayed to the next available day... which in happened to be 3? days later I think. Whoops.)
Anyway I'm really loving this game.

2024.05.11 02:59 Shiplapprocxy Twelve Years vs Three Years

I just keep thinking about how it makes perfect sense why Book Colin takes way longer to fall for Penelope than show Colin. Book Penelope was on the marriage mart for 12 years, while Show Pen just 3.
Book Polin has a 5 year age gap. They met when Penelope was 15 and Colin was 21. This is their largest initial obstacle. Penelope is literally just a baby, and even though she immediately turns 16, she still thought she was too young to debut in society and felt like she needed more time. So you have an adult man meeting a kid who still considers herself a kid. It takes time to overcome that association and see her as an adult. I can see the show giving us a young Polin meet cute, but Colin getting over the childhood associations should be faster with a 3 year age gap and both being kids when they met vs adult/minor.
Book Polin are not close friends. They are family friends and acquaintances, but the beginning of the story is really the first time Colin spends extended time with Penelope. Book Colin knew Penelope had a crush on him, so he intentionally went out of his way to not lead her on and play with her feelings- keeping her at a distance. He put a wall up in their relationship, and it only starts to fall at the beginning of the story when they start building a true friendship, and then speed runs into lovers when Colin starts to fall.
Book Polin actually don't see each other as much as we think. These twelve years have them apart more than together, with Penelope mostly sustaining a one sided crush without much actual interaction from Colin. They see each other during the social season only, which already means they spend more of the year apart than together, and then on top of that Book Colin travels way more than Show Colin does, being gone for a whole entire year and missing the season completely sometimes. And important to consider in all this- Book Colin does not write Penelope letters.
Add on proximity to this as well. Even when they're both in London, Book Polin were not neighbors like they are in the show (unfortunately book Colin cannot stalk the Featherington garden) for the entire 12 years Pen was out. The Featherington's home is close to *Violet's* house, not the Bridgerton house, and book Book Colin actually didn't live with any of his family anymore for years until the beginning of RMB when he moved back in with his mother when the lease lapsed on his bachelor lodgings while he was traveling. So even the friendly scenes that are based on him running into her in their shared neighborhood across Berkeley Square, trying to walk her home or running into her having tea at his mother's house, are specific to the season they fell in love, and not something Colin was ignoring for 12 years running. There are reasons why that year was THE year for them over any other.
All this is important because one thing is true for any version of Colin- book or show- will fall in love with Penelope if he's able to spend quality time with her while she's being herself. Her honesty pulls him in like a magnet.
So by the show changing their relationship to make them far closer friends to start off with than book Polin, putting them in each other's orbit more and removing the age gap that would make it weird until they get old enough for their ages to even out, they've made it so inevitable that they had to make Colin recognize his feelings faster. Book Colin is completely understandable for not seeing Pen for all those years- he literally wasn't around her- but Show Colin doesn't have the same excuse, and THAT is why waiting that long would seem like it was dragging out the obvious. And I know the show has added in some artificial ways to egg Colin along, but like... given the nature of how they've developed their relationship in the show, Show Colin doesn't need a big push to fall.

2024.05.10 21:55 Mountain-Departure-4 Am I watching the Odyssey?

(Tagged for spoilers in case they pop up in the comments) I have to say the Odyssey was one of the only books I actually read in high school, so I still remember bits of it, even in my old age. I recently started watching the Fallout series, and certain story arcs have left me reminiscing. Without mentioning any spoilers, I’m noticing parallels between the Odyssey and the Fallout tv series. For one example, Penelope is inundated with suitors at the beginning of the poem, and there is a similar theme in the first episode. If the writers are drawing inspiration from the Odyssey, I think they’ve done a good job of not plagiarizing it. coughO’ Brother Where Art Thoucough Has anyone else made this connection, or possibly noticed a different connection? I’m curious to hear people’s thoughts.

2024.05.10 07:02 WardedM I think the Eris changes are dumb and stupid.

I think they should bring back the cane. What if I bought the Penelope skin just for the cane?? What now Feeshintendo??? Vampiric Touch HP restoration wasn’t OP! I don’t care that she can turn into a mammoth now! If I wanted to play a rushdown I’d play Sentorn!
REVERT ERIS CHANGES!
