Mechanic Recommendations
Finally bought my dream bike (bmw 1976 R75/6) and have been enjoying it for the last year but it’s some for a serious tune up.
Does anyonee have recommendations for a mechanic that works on airheads?

2024.05.16 17:36 _Allex BMW e92 330i - one year of ownership

BMW e92 330i - one year of ownership
https://preview.redd.it/1yzkrzor5t0d1.png?width=2340&format=png&auto=webp&s=f1cf6b8616c8a1100798203dc8c79f2dbefd7916
So yeah, as the title says, I bought my E92 330i (09/2009) a year ago and I want to reflect on my year of ownership. I want to share all the maintenance that was done, my driving experience, and observations.
From the start, I knew that it wouldn’t be easy to maintain the car. It's powered by the N53B30 (200 kW) engine, which many people are not fond of. My ideal pick would be the N52B30 200 kW variant, but sadly, that was not widely available in Europe for the E92 model.
General observation
Let’s get to the point. If you are considering buying this car, make sure it has undergone proper maintenance first. Don’t gamble with models that have a shady maintenance history. If you are living in Europe, especially in the former "Ost blok," don’t buy this car in your country unless you have 100% service documentation from the previous owner. Back in the day, for the price of this car, you could buy one or two nice apartments in the capital (Bratislava). There simply weren’t enough people buying these cars in this part of Europe who could afford them. Nowadays, most of the E9x models are imported from Western Europe. Although the prices of the cars have significantly dropped, the cost of maintenance remains the same. Even with today’s salaries in this part of Europe, people can’t afford to maintain these vehicles properly. This leads to neglecting service intervals, using cheap aftermarket parts instead of OE/OEM ones, and not using the correct fuel, etc. Buying this kind of vehicle from, let’s say, Germany isn’t always the ideal solution, but at least people have higher purchasing power and can spend more on properly maintaining the car.
My experience
I bought my E92 with 218,000 km (~135,769.606 miles) in April 2023. I immediately fell in love with the car; despite the electric steering, the vehicle felt great. The acceleration, thanks to the last naturally aspirated N53 engine, felt powerful, linear, and willing to chase the red line every time I stepped on the gas. Thanks to direct injection, the fuel consumption was also solid. Driving according to the speed limit could get me way below 8.5l/100 km (27.67 mpg), usually between 7.5 - 8.3l/100km (31.69 - 28.33 mpg), which is an amazing value for a 3L 200 kW engine. The shape of the chassis is timeless, adorned by beautiful angel eyes and a long bonnet. The full leather interior with memory sport seats looks and feels brand new. The manual 6-speed transmission with a classical analog speedometer with an orange backlight is a work of art. Despite being a coupe, the car provides two fully functional back seats with enough legroom for even a 1.9-meter-tall person. Individual anthracite upholstery with beautiful black velour floor mats is just a nice bonus on top of this.
The fuel system and the engine
The biggest downside of this car is definitely the expensive high-pressure fuel system: pricey index 12 fuel injectors with NOx sensors and catalytic converters. Although direct injection enables you to drive very economically, it can cause problems. The engine can run in three different modes (stratified charge, homogeneous lean charge, and homogeneous charge mode). This can be discussed on many pages, but the long story short is: if you have any issue with the combustion system, ranging from spark plugs, coils, injectors, NOx sensor, or catalytic converters, you will lose the benefit of fuel consumption and run a very lean mixture, having the consumption of an N52. People (mainly from the US) complain about the high-pressure fuel pump, which can give up and destroy your €2500 injectors and fuel lines. You can more or less avoid this by using premium fuels (98/100 octane and higher) with cleaning additives (this will also help by removing carbon buildup). You should also expect to change your oil every 8000 - 10,000 km and no more. The N53 runs very hot; it is not uncommon for the oil temperature in the engine to reach 120°C when driving dynamically. You don’t want any burned oil slugs in the gasket, which can damage the timing chain and VANOS units. Also, the engine, thanks to the direct injection system, is quite noisy at idle (similar to diesel) and isn’t as silky smooth as the N52 or the M54 engines. Another topic is the water pump, which according to many, tends to fail. I had mine preventively replaced at 238,026 km. I didn’t notice any issues with it or the HPFP. Also, don’t forget to inspect/replace the DISA flaps; those can cause catastrophic engine damage if they are sucked into the cylinders.
Conclusion
Despite the mentioned issues, the engine can be very reliable and giving. My one year of maintenance was quite pricey. This could have been avoided if the previous owner had done some preventative maintenance. Sadly, he only replaced the clutch and spark plugs. However, one thing BMW really nailed with this engine was the timing chain. I still run on the original one (no knocking or loose chain whatsoever), and I’m planning to replace it before reaching the 300k km mark. If you have any remarks, feel free to ask. I’m also posting the maintenance that was done during my ownership. The prices include tax and labor. I serviced the car only with original parts at an authorized dealership.

2024.05.16 17:21 Big-Mango-6906 Trading in 2021 BMW M240i for 2018 E43 AMG?

Hello folks, I'm thinking about trading in my 2021 BMW M240i for a 2018 E43 AMG. My M240i was fun and nimble for its size, but I can't help wanting a bigger vehicle that's more comfortable for longer drives (1+ hr). I found a 2018 E43 AMG online for around $38k with only 35k miles ran & 1 owner for the entire ownership. Clean carfax with no accidents and regular maintenance scheduled at a Mercedes Benz dealership. I'm guessing it was owned by a retired man who bought it as a second vehicle?
Anyways, so the question I wanted to ask was whether or not this is a good decision? It is a 6 year old AMG after all, so somewhat worried about the reliability. Also, given that the car is coming up in 40k mileage, I heard that there is a big maintenance that needs to be performed during that stage? I have considered getting a Lexus IS 350/500 F sport, but it isn't an AMG at the end of the day.
TL;DR: Am I stupid for trading in a 2021 BMW M240i for a 2018 E43 AMG.
Thanks in advance!

2024.05.16 17:07 il_pier Moto for Tall rider

Hello! I want to change my bike (I have a BMW GS 310). I'm 197 cm (6'4") tall and my weight is around 100 kg (220 lb). I really like the Husqvarna Norden 901, but my question is whether the bike is worth the price. The alternatives I'm considering are the Suzuki V-Strom 800, Yamaha Tenere 700, Honda Africa Twin, and the BMW F900 GS. I'm open to other suggestions as well! For now, I will spend the majority of my time on the road, but in the future, I would like to do some off-road riding. Thank you in advance for the suggestions.

2024.05.16 16:42 mortalsphere13 Old World, New World - Bike search in Europe

TL;DR: I'm looking for a bike sold in the EU for:
TL;DR Initial Contenders:
Hey gearheads, looking for some input to help me in my search for my next bike.
I learned on dual sports (KLR250), and have owned three bikes. One disappointing cruiser, then a DR650SE and Yamaha Super Ténéré ES at the same time. I had to sell my bikes in 2018 and now live in Germany. I haven't searched for a new bike since 2015. Upon looking at manufacturer's websites, I can see it's a new world out there for motorcycles. No more Super Ténéré in the EU and everything is digital and sci-fi looking.
Type of riding I do:
For almost all of those cases, I normally used the Super Tenere or wish I had it. The DR650SE was only more fun, in comparison, when things were mostly really slow and/or really off-road. Even with a lot of mods, it just couldn't keep up with the Tenere on trips, commuting, and two-up.
Thanks for any advice!

2024.05.16 16:39 jdbazemore Mercedes M272 - problems after intake manifold swap

2010 Mercedes E350 Coupe, 117k Miles
I’ve just completed an intake manifold conversion/swap to the M014 composite manifold, including a flash tune from OETuning. Also did the CCV kit from FCP Euro at the same time (oil separator, centrifuge, drip pan, hoses, plugs).
During reassembly it seems I failed to properly reconnect the plugs on the engine wiring harness that’s clipped on the ECU mount (circled in this picture https://imgur.com/a/Id9TEUf).
It was dark, I was holding a flashlight, and working with one hand, I pressed the plugs together but apparently didn’t push them far enough for them to click. Called it a night and forgot to recheck my work when I came back to it the next day.
On initial startup the idle was extremely rough, lots of misfires and flashing CEL.
Pulled the codes from OBDLink and got the following:
P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected P0304 - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected P0305 - Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected P0306 - Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected P0273 - Cylinder Injector 5 Circuit Low P0348 - Camshaft Position Sensor “A” Circuit High P0393 - Camshaft Position Sensor “B” Circuit High P2092 - “A” Camshaft Position Actuator Control Circuit Low P2094 - “B” Camshaft Position Actuator Control Circuit Low
So…errors from pretty much everything on the 4/5/6 Cylinder bank led me to believe I’d missed a plug. Pulled the air box and started checking and that’s when I discovered the loose connection previously described. Reconnected that plug, also disconnected the ground wire, cleaned the contact surfaces, and reconnected for good measure. Checked all the plugs on the injectors, camshaft adjuster magnets, and camshaft position sensors - all were solid.
Started the car up again, no more misfires and flashing CEL, engine seems to be running fairly smoothly however the CEL was continuously illuminated and there was quite a bit of lifter noise from that side of the engine now (Bit of backstory, I replaced all four camshaft adjuster magnets about a month ago and went to 0w-40 oil which completely eliminated the lifter noise).
Thinking maybe clearing the codes would help, I tried to do so through the OBDLink app and it was unsuccessful (maybe because it’s really more for BMW’s), so I tried disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a few minutes to clear them that way. No luck, when I started the car back up the CEL was still on with same codes, and the lifter noise persisted.
At this point I’m wondering if that plug being half connected has damaged the injector, adjuster magnets, and position sensors in question and they need to be replaced? Or could something else be going on?
My plan at this point is to start pulling the engine harness on that side of the engine and basically redo the assembly to see if I missed something else I’m not catching in visual inspection.
Any suggestions or ideas are welcome.

2024.05.16 14:04 Fair-Catch9782 Mietwagen Panne - Schadensersatzforderungen?

Hi zusammen,

(im electrician but i do mechanic sometimes so im not that into pressures etc) i have 2 pressures Actual rail pressure : 6 / 35 bar while cranking .. and specified rail pressure : 300 (ignition off) / 500-550 bar while cranking . Car dont want to start . tried fuel bleeding .. No way to start . Only with start spray it starts and runs perfect . can drive can go max rpm no problems can work for hours likw that no stall no nothing . but car wont start. also fuel pump works good on ignition on please help what to check further?
also with other common rail . my both pressures stay together . 300bar off . 500 bar cranking . but both pressures in that rail are same . but for this one its totally different??

My utorrent used to work perfectly but it started acting up outta nowhere. Wouldn't connect to peers or stuck on add new torrent page for no reason. I use more of a public wifi and its not like it doesn't allow torrenting it does cause I was doing it perfectly fine couple of months ago. I have the latest 3.6 utorrent installed. Tried deleting + reinstalling again but same issue. I tried qbit same issue so most prolly there is a setting issue on my laptop but idk where to look and/or start looking.
I ready to answer questions and thanks in advance....

2024.05.16 05:29 janseny7 F82 Owner - True Cost of Ownership after 2.5 years

F82 Owner - True Cost of Ownership after 2.5 years
I have wanted a M since I was 16 but did not get one until I was 37 due to financial priorities and limitations. I finally pulled the trigger in September 2021 when I felt ready for the responsibility. It is a 2015 and bought it with 49k miles.
There are varying opinions on BMWs. One extreme thinks they are money pits that should be avoided at all costs etc
The other extreme thinks you shouldn’t own one unless you pay for it in cash and have the dealership fix everything and not question it.
I’m somewhat in the middle. My feeling is do the maintenance but if you can watch a YouTube video and read forum posts, learn to do it yourself.
Below is a list of maintenance items I’ve done and repairs I’ve made. Also should be noted I have Bootmod tune but I usually run with a stage 0 tune like the Comp or GTS. Just peace of mind for myself that I feel will make car last a little longer than stage 1 tune.
Standard maintenance(Oil changes, fluid changes, brakes, tires)
Tires - Michelin pilot sport AS4 - 1300 all in including warranty from discount tire. It is what it is.
For oil change I got a special from dealership. $185 for lifetime oil changes. Only caveat is they will not change it until the 10,000 mile service interval. That is unacceptable in my opinion so I change it myself at 5000 miles. Liqui moly 0w40 kit from FCP Euro costs me around $75. But the dealership special has already paid for itself with two oil changes.
Brakes They are little more than average car. I did them myself for 130 for the back and $160 for the front. Went with Akibono(sp) because of less brake dust. Dealership would have charged $1550 for front brakes and rotors. That’s including parts and labor. The rotors are pretty expensive compared to the average car. They are a little over $300 for each rotor. These items can easily be changed by yourself after watching a YouTube video. I plan on doing the rotors in the next month or so.
Spark Plugs(OE BOSCH. $8 each. SAME AS OEM without M logo) There are varying reports on cost for the dealership to do this. My local dealership quoted me $550 which I was honestly surprised about because that’s not that bad of a deal. There is so much stuff you have to take off that it is around a 4 to 5 hour job taking your time. Spark plugs usually last around 25 to 30,000 miles.
Ignition Coils($22 each for OE. OEM was $60 a piece) - I did these myself on my second spark plug change. Very easy to do.
The only other fluid I’m aware of is the differential fluid. Haven’t done DCT transmission fluid change. It’s not even offered by the dealership because it’s supposed to be lifetime fluid. I will tackle myself in the future and the kit is around $300-$400.
Wear and Tear Fixes(items known to go out on most F82’s due to design)
Valve cover($650 for part) This is a big ticket item that seems to fail in that 80-100k range. I could see some people neglecting because of the cost. Yes you can replace just the gasket for $70 but the actual covers tend to crack so if you’re going to do all that work, might as well do it right. Dealership quoted me $3200 for everything. There is a lot of time involved removing everything just to get to the valve cover so that’s where the cost comes from. I did it myself. I’m not the most mechanically inclined so I was extra careful and watched a ton of YouTube videos. But there were several moments during this repair where things could’ve easily gone south and I would’ve been screwed. I can see why the dealership charges this but I couldn’t justify it.
Rear Differential Bushing($1600 from Indy shop) This was something I did not feel comfortable doing myself because you have to lower the subframe disconnect the driveshaft. Earlier models have this inferior single bushing that is rubber with a metal sleeve, and they will crack. Was the car still drivable? Yes but.but clunk was annoying and could cause damage to the differential if not addressed
Unexpected Repairs
Coolant expansion tank. $120 for part. Fixed myself in 1hr. BMW wanted $700.
Lower dirt shield underpinning. $30 for the part and replaced myself within 30 minutes BMW wanted to $315.
CONCLUSION Is the car expensive to maintain? Yes it’s higher than your average vehicle but don’t buy into the fear from people that have had a bad experience with another BMW. Also don’t buy into the fear that they are impossible to work on or you need highly specialized tools. I don’t think I’ve ran into an issue where I had to buy a $200 tool to finish a job. Maybe a $20 spark plug socket or something minor. Plus it’s an inline 6 so it’s straightforward. Only frustrating thing I’ve ran into is the amount of stuff you have to take off to get to parts of the engine. But it’s just bolts and you can figure it out.
It also depends on if you feel comfortable doing maintenance yourself. You can save yourself a lot of money if done right. Just have an honest conversation with yourself if you can afford doing the maintenance when it needs it. Overall, I really enjoy the car and it has been reliable in my opinion. The maintenance cost would have been a nightmare and compounded into bigger problems if I was not prepared to shell out $$.
Hopefully this post helps someone out that’s thinking of getting one.
Ps I’ve attached estimates from dealership and also some other random pics.

2024.05.16 04:12 PussySmith Supercharger rates

Just bought a model 3 and supercharger rates didn’t really factor into my calculations because I already had a 50a sub drop in my driveway, and free to me L2 charging at work. At the end of the day it’s an around town car so I’m happy with my purchase, but I don’t see why anyone would bother with the inconveniences of road tripping a Tesla when a Prius comes in at half the fuel cost, and a v6 minivan is downright comparable.
At 21MPG and premium fuel @ 3.69 per gallon I’m coming up with about 17.5c per mile 24% more than the Tesla. (2010 BMW X5)
With supercharger rates at .40c per Kw, 90% charging efficiency and 310 wh/m I’m coming up with 13.7c per mile for the Tesla.
Is my math bad? I knew supercharging was more expensive than level 2 but that seems wild to me. My wife’s Sienna comes up to 14c per mile for a 2.6% increase over the Tesla. (22MPG, regular fuel @ 3.09 per gallon)
Edit: lmao I just did the math on my dad’s suburban with a big 6.2 v8 and it’s actually more economical than the Tesla. My math has to be bad, right?

2024.05.16 03:45 OgreMk5 Comparison of EVs

My wife got her Polestar and I admit I'm smitten. The China tariff thing is upsetting me because I really wanted a Polestar 4. So, I sat down with a spreadsheet and did some comparing.
I took all my data from the manufacturer website, including the as-equipped MSRP. Deals are too fleeting and difficult to pin down sometimes.
I looked at a bunch of EVs that I was interested in and some that I wasn't as interested in. I selected 5 features that were my must-haves (AWD, vented seats, heads-up display, cool color, phone charge/connectivity) . Each vehicle was optioned up as needed to get that equipment. For each feature it did not have, I deducted a point.
Appearance was also a 1-5 rating and the only really subjective one.
Range and power were both divided by 100 to get a number nearish 1-5 for each vehicle. Though those numbers ended up be very, very close together in general. One third of the vehicles have exactly 402 horsepower. The longest range was 352 miles (Rivian) and the shortest was 247 (Polestar 2, dual motor). But three other cars were within 11 miles of the Polestar 2 range.
I added up the points from those 4 areas and divided into the as-equipped MSRP giving me a cost per feature point (lower is better). Despite no vehicle having fewer than 3 feature points and no vehicle have less than 3 appearance points, the range of the point total was from 12.59 (Volvo) to 17.14 (Polestar 4).
Vehicles tested: Audi Q4, e-tron BMW i4 Mercedes EQE 500 Polestar 2 and 4 Porsche Taycan Rivian R1T Volvo C40
The worst in this comparison where the Audi e-Tron ($6980 per point), Porsche Taycan ($6920 per point), Mercedes ($6360 per point), the Audi Q 4 ($5182 per point) and the Volvo C40 ($5010 per point). The Volvo is the second cheapest, but it had the fewest "required" features.
The car with the most feature points is the Polestar 4. It also had the most power, narrowly beating the Rivian and the e-tron. Yes, the Rivian can be had with WAY more power, but the base model had sufficient features and the lowest price. The Polestar 4, however, came in third overall, beating the Rivian by a scarce $6/point. They are the effectively the same price and the same power. The Rivian has the better range, but lacks a heads-up display.
Second place was the BMW i4. This was the AWD e40 version. It was only one of two vehicles below $4000 per point. I've heard, but didn't deduct a point, that the vented seats are terrible. It was also $10,000 more than the winner, which was the big difference.
The winner, with all but one feature (the heads-up display), is also the cheapest car on the list. The Polestar 2. Coming in at $3948 per point.

2024 bmw m340i. They are charging me 7,100 dollars for this. Is this fair?
Geico originally estimated the fix to cost 1300 total (I have a 1000 deductible, so 300 Out of pocket for Geico).
I left my car at the bmw shop and after asking for a supplemental and the Geico representative seeing the car at the shop they said the damage was actually going to cost 7,100 dollars.
I asked for an itemized estimate and the guy just told me that they had to order a new headlight bc the connector in the back, that holds the front bumper, is broken so they had to order a new one. That plus getting a totally new rim since this one got scratched a lot.
Do those numbers add up? The guy initially told me the headlight costs 3,000 and the rim 800-1,200 dollars.
If it that ends up being the real cost of the damage then Geico is gonna end up paying like 6.1k dollars. How much is that going to increase my insurance ? I used to pay 1.6k dollars for 6 months. My first 6 months end in August.

2024.05.16 02:06 king0pa1n 27M Overweight NEET, I hate adult life, wtf is wrong with me

27 years old, still live at my parents house, and I've basically been stagnant since high school. I feel like a shell of my former self. I have been going through a process of self discovery and reflection, and the pressure of life is starting to set in. Normally I would counter this with escapism and burying the problem, but this year it feels different. To give some background:
-Short, bald, and obese
-Only have a year and a half experience of part time work (grocery store). I don't have references and a huge employment gap so I'm worried that I am less employable than a felony murderer. I hate working
-Failed out of community college, tried for 6 years and couldn't pass classes I wasn't interested in. Looked into getting IT Certifications as programming and tech support comes naturally to me. I might be limited by not having a college degree later in life, might take 1 college class at a time very slowly while working, who knows. I feel my parents patience is running out so 'career' needs to come soon
-Sadly my favorite thing is media consumption. I've legitimately turned it into a hobby somehow, joining music forums, researching home theater and creating a media center with a custom renderer, part of private torrent communities, etc. I built all of my friends and family's computers, set up surround sound systems, did tech work for grandparents etc. so atleast I can pass that knowledge onto others
-I have 6 really close friends that are absolute saints and have never pressured me into losing weight or getting a job etc. When we hang out its usually food on the cheaper side, memes, hiking, gaming, etc. I know they have my back. As a side effect, I haven't made a new friend since high school, maybe because I have such intense friendships that nothing else would measure up, you know?
-Had a three week relationship when I was 15, she ghosted me
-I think I'm anxious around women specifically. I try to be as normal as possible around them, logically they're any other normal ass person, but the entire time I'm hyper second guessing myself, what I'm saying, how I'm standing, every little thing. I've lived with a close female relative my age and it was completely different. In comparison I feel like a social butterfly around the average gamer type guy around my age
-Tried therapy in the past but bounced off of it, unfortunately I went in looking for a quick fix, instead of advice on how to better myself
Anyways, I felt business as usual up until a couple months ago when my body started screaming out for me to have sex and lose my virginity. Hormones, not peer pressure. Totally normal for a 27 year old guy, but it seems like the journey from here to there is a Mount Everest amount of self work. I don't even know if I want a girlfriend, or if I'm just craving sex. A relationship is about giving and receiving love, and I don't think I'm attractive enough to hook up outside of a relationship which I'm not sure I want in the first place. One redditor told me that people of all shapes and sizes have sex and relationships, regardless of life situation, and 90% of the time it's social skills that limit people
For people who were in the same situation or just have advice, my question is - Do I start from building blocks of a pyramid, cleaning my space and establishing good habits, exercise, adding little by little on top of that? Do I find a part time job, and the rest will fall into place?
How do I find that magical 'third place' to meet women when every hobby sounds lame as fuck?
How do I tell if I'm genuinely aromantic, or if I'm completely hollow inside from being habitually alone?
Does anybody know what the actual fuck is wrong with me?

2024.05.16 01:43 clerkp i4 M50 Trade In Values (Hint Not Good)

Purchased my i4 m50 in November. It’s a 2024 with 6k miles. MSRP was 75,000. I purchased the car via lease with the $7500 incentive plus 8 percent. I immediately bought out the lease. My total price was right around 62,000 with discounts. I thought I got a pretty good deal at the time and had some protection with the discount.
I tend to change cars frequently. Like the i4 a lot but always toy with going back to an ICE. Was just offered a jaw dropping low $51,000 trade in value for my 6 month old car from a BMW dealer no less. Before I get roasted, I fully understand that trading a 6 month old car will never be financially smart. That said I expected something closer to $55k. Even with current discounts and incentives, a $10,000 plus drop in 6 months seems like a lot. BMW famously proclaimed that it will not engage Tesla in a price war over EVs. I think they have. They haven’t lowered MSRP but offering 10 percent plus discounts is the same thing. I knew this car would depreciate more than most, but this is worse than expected thus far. Not sure how long people will keep buying EVs if the depreciation eat any savings from gas/maintenance. What do others think? What can we expect in terms of resale in a few years and is it bad enough to avoid EVs or just lease?
