Roof Restoration: DIY Contracting vs. All-in-One Service

2024.05.16 02:34 Reecey94 Roof Restoration: DIY Contracting vs. All-in-One Service

Hi AusRenovation,
I'm in need of getting my roof restored and would love some advice on my options. Here's what needs to be done:
I've received a quote for $14,000 for the entire job, but I'm considering whether hiring individual contractors for each task might be cheaper. Has anyone gone through a similar restoration? What approach did you take, and what were your costs and experiences?
Thanks in advance for any input or reflections on your experiences!

2024.05.15 02:03 Humboldt420 Looking for some help

Hello everyone, I recently had a small house fire due to heat transferring through my fire places cracked fire brick in the back of the firebox. My question is what is a fair price for the Installation of a new Majestic or Heatilator factory built fireplace system. This includes the unit, interior panels, faceplate, chimney pipe, flashing, termination cap, and installation. The rear wall will already be removed so they can remove the old firebox and slide the new box into place. I'm feeling like I'm getting taken advantage of with the $11,000 I've been quoated. I really don't know what something like this should usually cost. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

2024.05.14 21:47 JonathanPerdarder Stone over Torchdown?

Stone over Torchdown?
Hey all. I’m a very experienced steep slope roofer, but my knowledge of torchdown flat applications is just so-so.
I’ve got this repair area next to a chimney. That is torchdown beneath the dirt and mud. It is turned up the wall. I found a couple pin holes and a host of other issues on the chimney cap that are likely causing this particular intrusion, but my real question is this-
Is putting stone over torchdown a common application?
You can see several of the stone indentations near the roof to wall and many of them are deep. I’ve seen a lot of this stone used as ballast with EPDM, but never torchdown and intuitively it seems like a poor idea.
Also, the torchdown is directly to plywood with no underlayment. Is this a common application?
For reference, this roof is at 8000’ receiving a snow load of 250-300” per year. High test, to say the least. Wanting to figure out if this is a common or acceptable spec from architects or if the roofer tried to pull a fast one before I make a few of the calls that might open up a big ol’ can of worms.
Thank you for your input.

......
Caz didn't remember blacking out as she smashed through the wall, Valkyrie armor absorbing most of the blow. All she knew is that when she opened her eyes, she was moving faster than ever, throwing herself over obstacles and around corners as that massive emitter slung blinding pulses of light at her, but she wasn't stupid, it could hit her anytime it chose; They were herding her like livestock. Caz kicked off one wall of an alleyway, then the other and landed on the roof, never breaking stride as she leapt from crumbling rooftop to crumbling rooftop like she had wings, one arm protectively clutched to her chest to protect the remote. Jumping down a level she sprinted across the lower roofs, circling back around to try and retrieve her Huntress, When a Block-90 sailed through the air towards her. She caught it, Barely registering the name Dahlia engraved on the slide. She didn't need to see the troublemaker's guardian specter as a weighted chain sailed through the air from nothing to knock aside the emitter of a Geknosian spec ops' laser rifle. Caz instinctually aimed, and fired Dahlia, The soldier reeling back as a .30 caliber Durasteel slug slammed through their faceplate.
A soldier appeared in front of her, swinging a war gauntlet at her face. Sliding between their legs she put a round through their taint at point blank range to bring them to their knees before putting another round in the back of their helmet as she stood, never breaking stride.
Her muscles stung like hornets and her breath burned like fire, but she couldn't help but let loose a feral laugh as she slid, jumped, and vaulted through the rubble of the ruined village. The Dahlia barked, a spec ops soldier crumpling or flinching to swing their rifle from the shimmer in the air right in front of them so Cassius could drive a Kama into their throat. She didn't see charlotte anywhere, and despite the betrayal and stabbing of Remin, she couldn't help but be concerned for the girl. Another spec ops appeared in front of her, she slid around them, putting five rounds in their back armor, only for them to turn around and deliver a haymaker straight into her mask.
She felt her nose break as she slammed into the roof, momentum halted by the brutal hit as the remote flew from her hand. He reyes watched it sail through the air and fall.
Fall.
Fall into the waiting, ring bedecked hand of Drake. A shiver ran through the air as Drake pocketed the remote, a black, tattered spartan's cape flowing about his shoulders. But unlike every other time he'd lost consciousness and returned, it was like he had lost power this time, in a matter of fact, it was like he'd been drained of it. But the way he held himself was so much different, there was a sparkle in his eyes as he drew his sword, helmet flying into his palm as he snugged it on. The rings glimmered even as they absorbed so much of the light that hit them that they appeared as silhouettes.
There was a sudden change in the spec ops as they focused on Drake, she watched them gather into small groups, forming fire teams as the metal buzzards above turned to focus on the lone man. The words that fell from Drake's lips were like the first rumbles of thunder before a deadly monsoon.
"I haven't felt this scared since I was in the arena... And you have no idea how excited that makes me!"
...
Charlotte would not let the darkness of her mind claim her again. She tugged and pulled at the threads of her consciousness, fighting her older sister for control of her own body. But her older sister pulled back harder, tugging the knife taut against someone's throat. A shock of pain, a shock of cold and she was forced to let go. For a moment, she and her older sister were one. She could feel her older sister's fear, fear of punishment and reprisal. A tough mask hid the fragile being beneath that so desperately cried for freedom but feared what it could mean. All Charlotte could do, was push in her determination to be free again to her older sister before they separated again.
But this time she was not alone in the darkness, The soft sound of penny whistles and old war drums followed a man in furs and carrying an odd metal tube attached to a stock. His presence felt like an open field under a night full of stars that stretched on forever, or an endless calm ocean where you stood on a steady boat, the world as your oyster. But there was also something scary about it, like the ability to do anything was both curse and blessing. But when the man softly set himself down beside her, he also sat with her sister, letting them face each other, speaking with a soft twang she could only describe as old country, the man chuckled.
"I reckon you girls both want the same thing, and with the lord as my witness, I'm here to grant you that wish."
He held out his hands to either of us.
"Let us pray to the lord our god that he may deliver you from the lands of egypt and into the promised land."
They both took his hand, and bowed their heads as he recited a few ancient prayers. Charlotte felt a burning in her soul, a lightness that replaced the oppressive dark with a field of beautiful flowers, just like home. Looking to big sister sylva, she could see the fearful, broken look in her eyes, but also a spark of determination as the man picked up his percussion cap rifle and walked away, the sound of pennywhistles and drums following him as she tearfully, but strongly took her older sisters hand.
"Do the right thing."
As she pulled her hands away, the remote was left in her hand. Charlotte could feel the smile behind Sylva's mask as she tossed the remote, watching it turn into a swallow that flitted off as fast as it could.
...
Death slammed a palm against the wooden doors, bursting them open like they were old and rotten as he stormed into Conquest's throne room, scythe slamming against the stony floor as Drake stood off to the side. He felt an odd sensation, like he was only as strong as a human could be, like he had no power left.
And it was like a burden had been lifted from his shoulders. He moved slower, hit softer, and got hit harder now, he knew that, but it excited him to actually be able to fight!
Death stopped a few paces from conquest, who was lacksadaisically sipping from a clear goblet as servants played soft music from a corner and served her wine, either chained to their instruments, or dragging a heavy weight by their ankle or equivalent. Drake looked on in grinning anger, teeth grinding together as he observed the degrading spectacle. Death collected himself slightly, no expression visible on his skull face as he spoke in a voice like nails on a chalkboard.
"I heard that you used a soultrap, Conquest. Those were banned during the eight thousandth pantheonal convention, but I heard you used one on my chosen here."
Conquest snorted into her goblet before spotting drake and tensing so hard the goblet shattered.
"So what?! your little monster breaks more rules than I could dream of breaking!"
Death glanced back at Drake as the swordsman leaned casually against a pillar, gripping two rings menacingly with a manic grin of rage directed at conquest. The god couldn't look the mere mortal in the eyes as Death raised a calming skeletal hand.
"He breaks universal rules, supposedly unbreakable ones... and admittedly, I'm not sure how the fuck he does it. But we all agreed that soul traps are both inhumane, unfair, and straight up bullshit. It says that in the fuckin rulebook, Verbatim. If you want to fight my chosen, you'll do it in Yovun's arena, per the five thousandth convention. I don't want a war amongst the gods Gul'vak, but it seems you do..."
Conquest straightened upon the utterance of her true name, a low growl coming from her throat.
"You know nothing about what you speak of Human! Do not lecture me about rules!"
Heat mirage appeared around Death before he took a deep breath and simply said.
"Drake, if Conquest wants to break agreed upon rules... I guess I can turn a blind eye just this once. Go wild."
The room rumbled as two rings hit the ground, disappearing into black smoke so they could be summoned back without issue. Conquest stood, grabbing her hammer from thin air. But then two more rings clinked against the ground as Drake exploded with power, surging forth on black wings wreathed in pale flame. Conquest flinched and screamed.
"ALRIGHT!"
Drake stopped the lethal thrust inches away from Conquests fearful face, the hammer tumbling to the ground as Drake summoned the rings back onto his hands. He'd wanted to drive alexandros through her heart. But he could wait, as he turned around, rage broiling in his heart as he forcefully cooled it, this was not his world, it was the world of gods and primordials. It would be wise to follow their rules. Conquests voice was faux-strong as she shakily snarled.
"I'll follow the godsdamned rules... just keep that Thing away from me."
Drake felt a smile come to his face, pride swelling in his chest, this was a different kind of power he felt as he joined Death's side fearlessly. At the drop of a hat, he could make the greatest enemy of his people grovel at his feet. But, taking a deep breath, he pushed the feeling away, knowing now how the high priest felt every time he cracked that whip against a young Drake's raw back. How dangerous getting addicted to that feeling could be. He'd enjoy it for now, but he also made a solemn promise to hold back any chance he could. To show the mercy he never received.
Death swept around, beckoning Drake.
"Come, young warrior, I sense that your friends need you."
Drake was shaken from his thoughts as he rapidly joined Death's side.
"How do you know?"
"Old john brown has finally selected a chosen. For a god of liberty he has a lot of deference to the big G."
"Who's the big G?"
"God, used to be kind of a pompous bastard really, but he's grown on me."
"Nothing you just said makes sense to me."
"To You."
Death clarified confusingly.
...
Drake looked over the gathered Geknosian spec ops, noticing Charlotte's pummeled form leaning against a pile of rubble, chest weakly rising and falling. Cataclysmic rage burned in his heart as a blaster bolt burnt across his chest with his first step forward. He wouldn't need to remove a ring for this, he wanted to kick ass old school style. He took each bolt as they came his way, burning his flesh and charring his armor. But the pain was like a drug, his blood running hot with battle-lust as he called out.
"Take a breather guys! they're all mine!"
Drake picked up speed, charging through the flashes of laser bolts even as they burned his skin and charred his flesh. As his foot hit the ground, he felt them running with him, the warriors that made up the liquid iron in his blood. From the first Hoplite to his father the Warmonger. A million souls crying out for revenge as he planted a flying double footed kick to a spec ops soldier's breastplate, bringing them to the ground and sliding the blade of his sword into the gap between their neck and chest armor, purple blood spilling out as he brought the sweeping cut up, striking the chin of another's helmet before driving the point of his sword directly into their throat. He dove out of the way as a laser bolt obliterated the ground where he'd been standing, herding him into a ring of the spec ops.
Good, just where he wanted to be, up close and personal. He danced through the circle of death, blaster bolts intended to harm or kill splashing against other Geknosians in blinding flashes as Drake carried himself through the barrage on dancer's feet, the steps he'd practice with Cassius allowing him to strike freely. Each strike flowing into another, seamlessly switching between single handed and two handed grips as he leapt up, monkeying onto a spec ops soldier and stabbing his sword's blade into the gap between neck and shoulder all the way to the hilt. Leaping towards another with a manic grin as he saw fear in the eyes behind the visor before the helmet went flying with the head still inside it. Suddenly a Geknosian in ornate armor appeared in front of him, thrusting a saber for his throat.
Drake let the blade skitter off his helmet's faceplate, returning a slash that was parried with a strong low block. Steel rang, clashing and clamoring as the two danced back and forth. One thinking they were meeting their prey in honorable battle, the other fighting like a rabid, enraged beast that had been backed into a corner. The saber snapped under a particularly vicious blow, the Geknosian general just able to register surprise before Drake separated his head from his shoulders. Blood pumping, skin burning as the headless corpse slumped down by his feet. He looked around at the spec ops who still had their guns raised and trained on Drake.
"Grack this! I don't wanna die here!"
One shouted, Drawing Drake's attention as they threw their blaster to the ground and slammed down on their knees, putting their hands on the back of their heads. Drake looked around at the clearly hesitating spec ops and through his manic, uncontrollable grin he called out.
"Anyone else not want to die?!"
Slowly, ever so slowly the remaining blasters were lowered, then tossed to the ground as the two metal buzzards hummed frantically away. Seeing Caz limp to his side with her railgun, he put his hand on her forearm as she tried to raise it to point at the fleeing aircraft.
"Let em go."
"But they just tried to-"
"Some must live to spread the word."
Caz looked up at him for a moment, confused, before a spark of realization lit up her pain filled crystalline eyes as she looked at the surrendering spec ops.
"Prisoners..."
Drake nodded and flicked the blood from his swordblade before wiping it clean on the dead general's crotch flap.
"Prisoners."
He confirmed, looking to charlotte as she slowly clambered to her feet, swaying weekly as she clutched her head. Drake let his smile fall and fade before saying.
"who else needs medical attention."
"everybody but Cassius and Destrier as far as I know, including yourself dumbass."
Drake chuckled and nodded, getting an odd look from Caz as he stated.
"I'll be fine, I'll just pop off a pinkie ring for an hour when we get home."
Caz sighed and helped Drake support the badly wounded Charlotte to the forge building.
"somethings changed about you, and it's not the lack of power."
Drake chuckled and simply responded.
"I don't know, I just feel... better, all of a sudden. Fightings fun again."
"I'm not sure that's a good thing, Drake."
Drake chuckled softly and helped get Charlotte into the forge building without responding.

2024.05.12 17:51 HashMapsData2Value Algorand's REAL secret sauce

Algorand's REAL secret sauce
What is the fundamental thing that sets Algorand apart?
In Computer Science, specifically as it concerns distributed databases, there's a concept called the CAP theorem: C = Consistency, A = Availability, P = Partition tolerance.
The CAP theorem is a trilemma and states that when P fails, you have to two choose either Consistency or Availability.Consider Amazon. They have websites all over the world. Imagine that Amazon.fr offers customers in France widget X from an Amazon warehouse in Germany.
One day there's a massive IT failure. French customers can reach Amazon.fr, but the website can no longer reach the German warehouse. Amazon.fr now has a decision to make. Does it choose to be Consistent, i.e., tell the customers "sorry, things are not available right now". Or, does it choose to be Available, say "it's available" but then return the customer their funds if it turns out the German warehouse sold out the widgets to other customers in the meanwhile.
The latter allows Amazon.fr to collect money and simply give it back later should the widget be sold out. Good for Amazon but bad for customer experience. The former promises nothing and delivers 100% of the time, but is perhaps worse for Amazon.
Blockchains as distributed databases
If you view blockchains as distributed databases, the vast majority of them choose Availability. Algorand is the only one I am aware of which choses Consistency.
Algorand's first introduces a concept of being "online". Node runners, in possession of Algo, register themselves and their stake as online and participating in consensus. This allows for a bunch of convenience, such as instant finality and no forking, and is perhaps Algorand's "secret sauce".
Since other participants know how much stake is expected to be online and active at any given moment of time, a fair statistical lottery involving everyone can be set up with public parameters. The lottery can have an expected result like "there will be 20 eligible to visit the Willy Wonka factory". And best of all, the lottery does NOT need to coordinated by a central authority - instead all the online participants run the lottery to self-select themselves! This is how the VRF works in Algorand, a cryptographic primitive that allows you to produce a random output that is verifiably random.
In each round, everyone run the VRF such that on average 20 potential block proposers are chosen. These addresses now who they are and only they need to share their blocks and VRF tickets/credentials, no one else will even bother to share their failed block VRF attempt since nodes will not bother relaying them onwards.
Note that the number 20 stays the same no matter how many node runners there are! There could be a thousand or a million. This is how you can ensure that a 1000x in decentralization does not reduce your blockchain's performance by a similar factor. Everyone of these 20 individuals also have a personal stake weight. Algorand is a Proof-of-Stake blockchain, so the more stake you have the more you should have to say (on average).
This might be a little technical but you get to calculate a hash that is a concatenation of your credential and an index i. If your hash output is the LOWEST of all the 20 block proposals then your block wins.hash(credential, i) = outputYou are allowed to try multiple times however. hash(credential, 0), hash(credential, 1), ..., hash(credential, n). And you are allowed to grab the index that has given you the lowest output. What is the maximum value n? It's a function of your stake. So the more stake you have, the more shots you get to take basically.
A committee called the soft committee is, on a similar basis of VRFs and so on, assemble. Instead of 20 though almost 2990 are self-selected. They vote and pick the block proposal with the lowest hash output.A second committee, called the cert committee (1500 members), assembles and they verify that the transactions in the block are valid. No double spending etc.
Once again, because we know how much stake and how many are meant to be online, we can run these elegant schemes. We run through these steps in one round, a block is produced and it is instantly final. The network as a whole can tell the world "Look, we have convened and arrived on this block." And so long as 2/3rds are honest, there is no forking of the chain of blocks.
Consider the Papal Conclave. The Cardinals essentially lock themselves in the Sistine chapel, expelling outsiders. Once they have converged on the next Pope with a 2/3rd majority, white smoke (Fumata) is released from a chimney.Papal Conclave
Papal Conclave
In Bitcoin OTOH, it's the Wild West, a messy fog of war. Every node has to hash hash hash, spending their energy, often fruitlessly. If/once they complete a Proof of Work they share their blocks not only to their miner peers but confidently to the world itself. The world is inundated with many potential blocks, and users have to wait 6 blocks (60 minutes) to really feel secure that their transaction went through.
Dynamic Lambda
Bitcoiners do coordinate on the difficulty. They aim to produce a block roughly every 10 mins, and will up or down the difficulty.
Algorand can do much better.
Consider a school bus. It has a set route and a list of kids for every stop.
Two factors determine how fast the school bus driver can finish their route:
  • 1: Time driving between the stops.
  • 2: Time waiting for the kids at each stop.

1 is dependent on a number of outside factors, e.g. traffic, the laws of physics, what speed limit is safe to drive on the route. But the school district CAN choose to invest in a better school bus. In theory, it could issue an orderer a Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter to zip the kids to school.

2 is dependent on the kids and their families. Do the kids rise early or sleep in? Are the parents pro-active? Etc.A yellow school bus, recognizable to the rest of the world from Hollywood moviesYou could imagine the driver keeping statistics and acting accordingly. He or she might decide to stay 5 minutes at every stop before moving on.

A yellow school bus, recognizable to the rest of the world from Hollywood movies
The driver tries it but realizes that they're filling up the bus fast and then having t wait.Next time, they decide to stay 3 minutes at every stop before moving on.However this time, as they're driving off, they see in their side view mirrors that kids keep running after the bus.4 minutes, they decide, is the sweet spot.
In Algorand, we call this Dynamic Lambos Lambda. Specifically, Lambda refers to the time, and it is dynamic.
Once again, since the nodes have a much greater awareness of who their peers are at any given time than in other blockchains, they can calibrate their own "internal stopwatches". If 95% of blocks and votes and other activity arrives for all the steps within 2.8 seconds, then we make 2.8 seconds our block time. In fact that is our block time - one block is produced, and is instantly final no ifs or buts, every 2.8 seconds.
In the future, should we see performance gains in the nodes (e.g. by raising minimum specs due to hardware becoming cheaper, or by improving transaction validation time in blocks, etc), that 95% percentile time might come down, and the block time with it. Similarly, we are soon to see changes to the Algorand networking layer. Should it slow the network down, Dynamic Lambda ensures the nodes also change their expectations.
Okay, but what are the downsides?
Let's say a catastrophic event splits the Earth in half. What would happen to our blockchains? (Or even if the Earth doesn't physically split in half, one could imagine a country going into a networking lockdown.)
In Bitcoin, the nodes would continue none-the-wiser. Half of the world would converge on one fork. The other half would converge on another. All would be well... until the halves are connected again. Then, the Bitcoin protocol dictates, whichever fork is the longest will super impose itself on the other, while the shorter fork will simply disappear. Regardless of how many real-life purchases were made with Bitcoin, the state and everyone's balances (in the one half) will be rolled back to when the fork happened, as if that timeline had never existed in the first place.
(Unless, of course humans intervene and decide to spin their own preferred fork into its own Bitcoin fork.)
On Algorand however, as mentioned before, in each round we expect 20 block proposals, 2990 soft votes and 1500 cert votes. If a node notices that far fewer proposals and votes are reaching it (following a network partition), it will halt itself. The threshold lies at a 20% drop.
Similar to an online storefront that follows Consistency over Availability, Algorand nodes prefer to take the safe over the unsafe. But don't confuse this halt for a messy crash, rather, it is a graceful stop which it will quickly get itself out of once it sees the connections come back again. Or a human intervenes.
Isn't that an attack vector though? Only requiring 20% at that to bring down Algorand!
In theory yes it is an attack vector. An adversary could buy up hundreds of millions or billions of Algo, constitute 20% of the online stake and then render themselves offline by refusing to contribute any activity.
Of course this does NOT allow them to cause a fork in the chain (that requires 33%), or to force through malicious transactions. It simply causes a halt in the chain. In practice this would be horrendously expensive - buying up all those Algo, driving the price up for each percentage point, only to then expose yourself by going offline.
There is a smaller version of this, however, that we are more concerned with. In other chains, if an amateur sets up node software to mine in the background of their computer and that computer goes offline every night, there are no issues.
https://preview.redd.it/31uparalo00d1.jpg?width=978&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a1e44b9197b6374ace58908271e5b47fbf6996a8
On Algorand however, with the introduction of node incentives, we expect (and are hoping for) a lot more people to go through the efforts of setting up the node software, going online and contributing to consensus.
However, there is a risk that if many amateurs do this on their personal computers, a non-trivial group of those amateurs are concentrated in one area (e.g., US-East Timezone), and they all allow their computers to go offline... That could cause issues for the blockchain. Not because a powerful adversary made a coordinated and concerted effort to hurt Algorand, but because of the negligence of a large group of well-intentioned Algo holders.
In order to guard against this, a new protective measure will be introduced.
As I've mentioned repeatedly in this article - node runners know the stake of which addresses and the total stake online. It is thus possible to calculate, for each address and their relative stake, how often we'd expect them to deliver a block proposal, a soft vote and a cert vote.
If an address significantly deviates from that - e.g., due to the node being turned off - the nodes will issue a "takedown" transaction that they need to reach consensus on. That transaction will force the address in question to go from online stake to offline.
As these calculations add to the workload already being done by the nodes, a minimum staking limit will be added as well to be eligible for rewards. Otherwise, an adversary could spread "micro-stake" across a large number of addresses and exhaust honest nodes. But this minimum staking limit will also come with so called Reti pools - staking pools in which anyone can contribute much smaller stakes such that the sum exceeds the minimum limit and they can take part in the rewards, while a node runner collects a fee.
Pros and Cons
Every blockchain has its pros and cons. Some of the pros and cons of Algorand have been laid bare in this article. While people from outside Algorand might see the 20% halting property as more of a bug than a feature, they also need to consider the sheer benefits building on Algorand gets you: blazingly fast transactions (2.8s) that are IMMEDIATELY final.
By choosing consistency over availability, Algorand offers an experience that is unmatched among all the general purpose blockchains.

Overview of the Langtang Region Treks

The Langtang region, located just north of Kathmandu, offers a unique trekking experience that is often overshadowed by the more famous Annapurna and Everest regions. Despite its relative obscurity, the Langtang region is a true gem, boasting stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and a sense of solitude and remoteness that is hard to find in other parts of Nepal.

Highlights of the Langtang Region Treks

  1. Unspoiled Wilderness: The Langtang region is renowned for its pristine, untouched landscapes, with fewer crowds and a more intimate trekking experience compared to the more popular Himalayan destinations.
  2. Cultural Diversity: Trekkers in the Langtang region have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the unique culture and traditions of the Tamang and Tibetan-influenced communities that call this region home.
  3. Dramatic Scenery: The Langtang region is home to the Langtang Lirung (7,227m), the fifth-highest peak in Nepal, as well as the Langtang Glacier and the serene Gosainkunda lakes, offering trekkers a diverse array of stunning natural landscapes.
  4. Accessibility: The Langtang region is relatively more accessible from Kathmandu compared to other Himalayan trekking destinations, making it a popular choice for those with limited time or resources.

Popular Treks in the Langtang Region

  1. Langtang Valley Trek: A 5-10 day trek that takes trekkers through the Langtang Valley, offering stunning views of the Langtang Lirung and the opportunity to explore the Langtang National Park with charming Tamang culture around the valley.
  2. Gosainkunda Trek: A 7-9 day trek that leads trekkers to the sacred Gosainkunda lakes, a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists alike.
  3. Tamang Heritage Trail: A 7-10 day trek that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Tamang people, with the opportunity to visit traditional villages and learn about their way of life.

Trekking Difficulty and Physical Fitness Requirements in the Langtang Region

The trekking difficulty in the Langtang region is generally considered to be moderate, with the Langtang Valley Trek and Gosainkunda Trek being suitable for trekkers with a reasonable level of physical fitness and endurance. The Tamang Heritage Trail, while not as physically demanding as the other treks, still requires a good level of fitness and the ability to navigate steep ascents and descents. Altitude sickness can be a concern in the Langtang region, particularly at higher elevations, so proper acclimatization and preparation are essential.

Comparing the Landscapes and Scenery of the Annapurna and Langtang Regions

While both the Annapurna and Langtang regions offer stunning Himalayan landscapes, there are some notable differences in the scenery and overall character of the two regions. The Annapurna region is known for its dramatic, towering peaks, including the iconic Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri, as well as the diverse transitions from lush, subtropical forests to the stark, snow-capped high Himalayas. In contrast, the Langtang region is characterized by a more intimate, alpine-style landscape, with the Langtang Lirung and the serene Gosainkunda lakes being the primary highlights. The Langtang region also tends to be less crowded and more off-the-beaten-path compared to the Annapurna region, offering a more secluded and solitary trekking experience.

Cost Comparison between Annapurna and Langtang Region Treks

In general, the Annapurna region treks tend to be slightly more expensive than the Langtang region treks, primarily due to the longer distances and higher elevations involved. The Annapurna Circuit, in particular, is considered one of the more costly treks in Nepal, with the need for permits, transportation, and a longer duration contributing to the higher overall cost. The Langtang region treks, on the other hand, are often more budget-friendly, with shorter distances, lower elevations, and less-stringent permit requirements. However, it's important to note that the specific costs can vary depending on factors such as the time of year, the level of luxury desired, and the individual trekking company or guide.

Accommodation and Facilities in the Annapurna and Langtang Regions

However, both the Annapurna and Langtang regions offer a range of accommodation options, from basic teahouses and lodges to more comfortable and well-equipped guesthouses and hotels. In the Annapurna region, the infrastructure is generally more developed, with a larger number of trekking lodges and amenities catering to the higher volume of trekkers. The Langtang region, while not as extensively developed, still provides a good selection of basic but comfortable teahouses and lodges, particularly along the more popular trekking routes.
In terms of facilities, the Annapurna region tends to have a slightly more extensive network of medical clinics, ATMs, and other services compared to the Langtang region. However, both regions have seen significant improvements in their infrastructure and amenities over the years, making them increasingly accessible and comfortable for trekkers.

Weather and Best Time to Visit Annapurna and Langtang Regions

The optimal trekking seasons for both the Annapurna and Langtang regions are generally the same: spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). During these periods, the weather is typically dry, with clear skies and moderate temperatures, making for ideal trekking conditions.
The summer months (June-August) can be quite wet, with the monsoon season bringing heavy rainfall and increased cloud cover, which can impact visibility and trail conditions. The winter months (December-February) can be bitterly cold, with the potential for snowfall, especially at higher elevations.
It's important to note that the weather in the Himalayas can be highly unpredictable, and trekkers should be prepared for a range of conditions, regardless of the time of year they choose to visit.

Choosing the Perfect Himalayan Adventure for You - Annapurna or Langtang?

When it comes to selecting the perfect Himalayan adventure for you, both the Annapurna and Langtang regions offer unique and captivating experiences. The Annapurna region, with its towering peaks, diverse landscapes, and challenging trekking opportunities, may appeal to more experienced and adventurous trekkers seeking a true test of their endurance and skills. The Langtang region, on the other hand, offers a more intimate and off-the-beaten-path experience, with stunning alpine scenery, cultural immersion, and a slightly more accessible trekking environment.
Ultimately, the choice between the Annapurna and Langtang regions will depend on your individual preferences, fitness level, and the type of trekking experience you're seeking. If you're looking for a truly epic and challenging adventure, the Annapurna region may be the perfect fit. If you prefer a more serene and less crowded trekking experience, with the opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture, the Langtang region could be the ideal destination for you.

  3. Poon Hill Trek: A shorter, 5-7 day trek that offers panoramic views of the Annapurna range, including the iconic Machhapuchhre (Fish Tail) peak.

2024.05.10 23:08 hextermination First time living with a Gas Furnace. Some questions

Hi! Thanks in advance for reading and any advice you may have.
In March, I moved into a new apartment. It’s a 2 floor Rowhome. I rent the first floor. I have a natural gas furnace. Have never had one of these before — every apartment I’ve lived in previously has been electric heat / central air.
I have a few questions: 1. The Pilot light goes out at least once per week. Sometimes multiple times per day. My landlord attributes this to heavy winds. He said he would go up on the roof to make sure the chimney’s cap did not blow off, and if yes, he’d replace it. If he did in fact do this, it still goes out constantly. Could this be a sign of another issue? What can I do as a renter?
  1. Now that it’s starting to get hotter out, I’m going to need the heat less and less. Thinking about my gas bill for the summer, what can I do to not pay for a hefty gas bill in the summer ? Should I shut off the gas from my supplier ? Shut off the gas valve at the furnace and turn it back on if temps drop to a point that requires heat? Let the pilot light stay constantly lit all summer?
Thanks !

Any advice as to what profession to speak to about this? Roofer etc?
This is our first house purchase and this group has been great for research. So wondering if some of you could help me here. Turn of the century terrace house in London with a slate DPC I’m told.
When we moved in there was some damp around the door in the dining room that leads to the garden beside the galley kitchen. A recommended damp company had the plaster stripped back and injected and re-plastered and then decorated (in hindsight from reading in this group we actually need to pull up the paving slabs outside and create a French drain). But since redecorating we now have this damp to touch stain running down the wall. The chimney breast was removed some 35 years ago. Gallows bracket in the loft. There are no radiators in this side of the house and no signs of similar in the 2nd bedroom upstairs. Could it be the neighbours chimney pot cap needs looking at? They still have a chimney breast their side albeit unused. Any advice greatly received.

Embracing the Unpredictable: Barot Valley Weather at Wild Highs
Nestled in the serene and enchanting landscape of Himachal Pradesh lies Barot Valley, a hidden gem awaiting exploration. For adventure seekers and nature lovers alike, Barot Valley offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, with its tranquil surroundings and breathtaking vistas. However, one aspect that adds an element of excitement to any visit to Barot is its unpredictable weather.
At Wild Highs, we understand the allure of Barot Valley and the thrill of experiencing its ever-changing weather patterns. From sunny skies to sudden downpours, each day in Barot brings with it a sense of anticipation and wonder. As avid adventurers ourselves, we believe that embracing the unpredictability of nature is part of what makes exploring Barot Valley such a memorable experience.
The Barot Valley weather is characterized by its variability, influenced by the region's unique geographical features and elevation. Situated at an altitude of around 6,000 feet above sea level, Barot Valley experiences a temperate climate with cool summers and chilly winters. However, due to its proximity to the Himalayas, weather conditions can change rapidly, making it essential for visitors to be prepared for anything.
During the summer months, Barot Valley enjoys mild temperatures, making it an ideal time for trekking, camping, and outdoor activities. The days are usually sunny and pleasant, perfect for exploring the lush forests and meandering trails that surround the valley. However, it's not uncommon for afternoon showers to roll in, bringing relief from the heat and adding a touch of drama to the landscape.
As the monsoon season approaches, the Barot Valley weather becomes more unpredictable, with frequent rain showers and thunderstorms. While this may deter some travelers, for others, it presents an opportunity to witness the valley in its full glory, with cascading waterfalls and verdant greenery coming to life. It's important to note that heavy rainfall can sometimes lead to road closures and landslides, so it's advisable to check weather forecasts and travel advisories before planning your trip.
Autumn brings a sense of tranquility to Barot Valley, with clear skies and crisp mountain air. The foliage begins to change, painting the landscape in shades of gold and crimson, creating a picturesque backdrop for outdoor adventures. Hiking, fishing, and birdwatching are popular activities during this time, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the valley.
Winter transforms Barot Valley into a winter wonderland, with snow-capped peaks and frost-covered meadows. While the temperatures can drop below freezing, the valley takes on a magical quality, inviting visitors to embrace the season with activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and igloo building. Cozying up by the fire with a hot cup of cocoa is the perfect way to end a day of winter exploration in Barot.
No matter what time of year you choose to visit, one thing is for certain – the Barot Valley weather is as wild and unpredictable as the adventures that await. Sensitive to: Citric acid, Citrus oils, products with shea butter, myristyl myristate and proplene glycol seem to irritate my skin often.
These are all the empties I made my way around to in the last three months. I am currently on a replacement only buy as I have accumulated quite a lot of products last year that I need to finish before they expire.

Minimalist Oats Cleanser, WRP, Loved it. Rs. 285/125ml ❤️
  • Texture: Lotion-gel like consistency that's neither thick or runny
  • Usage Timeline: Consistent AM/PM usage since November 2023, a 125 ml bottle lasts for around 2.5 months on me
  • Fragrance: None
  • Experience: It's my favourite cleanser atm, I already have another bottle that I've been using, After using Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser, I skeptical of lotion based cleansers but this has really made my change my mind. I used it through winters and it kept my skin and moisturised. Additionally, it really helps my skin barrier whenever it is irritated. Will continue using it as an AM cleanser for summers as well. The only reason I have been thinking of switching to CeraVe hydrating cleanser (which I find to be quite comparable) is that the Minimalist one doesn't come in a bigger bottle. A 250 ml or 400 ml version would be a godsend.
Aveeno DML, WRP, HG. Rs. 240/71ml ❤️
  • Texture: Gel-Creme
  • Usage Timeline: PM usage during 2023 spring and 2023 winters until now
  • Fragrance: Negligible
  • Packaging: I find the tube both convenient and travel friendly.
  • Experience: My skin loves this moisturiser in the winters. It's so soothing and relaxing and doesn't feel greasy or overbearing while moisturising my skin thoroughly. I have bee using this over azelaic acid and they make the best combination for my acne prone dry, sensitive skin. In the summers although it congests up my T zone quite a bit so I use it only in the winters. I have heard that there has been a reformulation so I'm not sure how much I'll enjoy it the next time I purchase it.
CeraVe Moisturising Lotion, WRP, Love it. Rs. 520/88ml ❤️
  • Texture: Lotion that's on the runnier side but not watery
  • Usage Timeline: AM winters of 2023-24 for 3 months
  • Fragrance: The packaging was okay, however, it was not travel friendly. The pump-nozzle situation leaked at least 20% of the product for me during travel. I am interested in seeing how the bigger size pumps perform.
  • Experience: I was so distressed over finding the right product for day time during winters which was not greasy and felt nice on application and this just hit the spot. It kept me moisturised throughout the day, went nice below my sunscreen, didn't feel greasy by the end of the day and actually helped calm and repair my skin after some barrier damage in the beginning of the season. I will definitely repurchase it next winters or for summer night time once I make through my current stash.
La Shield SPF 40 PA+++ Mineral Sunscreen Gel, WNRP, have found better alternatives. Rs. 175/ 50g 🏳️
  • Texture: Thick lotion, almost cream like
  • Usage Timeline: I have used 2-3 tubes of this over the last 2 years
  • Fragrance: Has a strong, almost detergent like smell for the first 10 minutes which disappears.
  • Experience: Despite the detergent like smell, slight white cast and thick texture this sunscreen works for me. The smell and the cast fades after a few minutes and the texture helps with my dry skin. I love the protection it gives me. I used this sunscreen during a beach vacation as I needed something cheap that I could slather on my face and body regularly and it totally delivered. This is the only sunscreen I've repurchased besides Neutrogena Ultrasheer SPF 50 and Re'equil Blue becaue of the protection.
JC Hemp Seed Oil, loved it but I like Tatvalogy's better so WNRP. Rs. 250/15ml ❤️
  • Texture: Runny, lightweight oil which absorbs quickly
  • Usage Timeline: Have used it for around 7-8 months, usually PM or when skin is too dry and flaky.
  • Fragrance: Has a herby smell which grew stronger and slightly rancid after the first couple of months.
  • Experience: I love using hemp seed oil as a facial oil. It is soothing, moisturising and healing. It takes care of any dry or irritated patches very quickly, even on my body. As I mentioned the smell as off putting after a while and I didn't find this issue with Tatvalogy's hemp oil, so I will be switching to that. Besides that, hemp oil seems like a permanent addition to my routine.
JC Australian Sandalwood & Myrrh Night Cream, WNRP coz expensive and not that great. Rs. 650/50g 🏳️
  • Texture: Thick creamy balm which absorbs slowly
  • Usage Timeline: I have used 2 containers of this since 2019
  • Fragrance: Has a strong sandalwood and myrrh smell, it's not for the faint hearted
  • Experience: I know JC is a polarising brand on here but I have had a few positive experiences with their products, mostly lip balms. This was my second tub, I used it as a night mask once a week or twice a week (in winters). It is a thickkk balm which takes a while to settle into the skin and has a strong smell but the hydration was worth it. It didn't irritate my skin or clog my pores but I wouldn't use it daily coz it has tons of EOs in the ingredient list. In the end the price and the smell doesn't justify its existence in my routine. I know what my skin likes better now and this is just not worth it.
Vaadi Blueberry Lip Balm, WNRP coz of the floral fragrance, Rs. 75/10g 🏳️
  • Texture: Lightweight balm that stays on the lips for 2-3 hours
  • Usage Timeline: 4 months
  • Fragrance: Has a mild floral smell which is definitely not berry like
  • Experience: It's a pretty decent lip balm but I am definitely not fan of the smell. It has a good middle ground between no too thick and not too thin so texture wise I liked it but I don't see it as worthy of a repurchase.
Fragrance & Beyond Deep Nourishing Ceramide Face Serum, WNRP, icky. Free sample on Smytten.
  • Texture: Watery
  • Usage Timeline: used it on feet for a week.
  • Fragrance: None
  • Experience: I am pretty sure it did nothing for my feet, which is expected from a face serum but the shady brand and as a freebie from smytten I really didn't want to put it on my sensitive face skin. Overall it seemed pretty gimick-y to me.
Seer Secrets Vitamin C Flowing Face Serum, WNRP, too goopy. Free sample on Smytten.
  • Texture: It had a thick, goopy texture to it.
  • Usage Timeline: Used it on my hands for two weeks.
  • Fragrance: None
  • Experience: Similar to the above HA serum, felt like nothing on my hands and did not use it on my face.
Buds & Berries Macadamia and & Vanilla Body Wash (210/300ml), WRP ❤️
  • Texture: Lotion-gel like consistency that's neither thick or runny
  • Usage Timeline: 6 months
  • Fragrance: Yummy, sweet Vanilla
  • Experience: This was such a great random buy. Smells really sweet and vanilla-y. Lathers up really well, a little goes a long way. And it made my skin feel so soft and clean after showering. And one bottle can go onnnn for months and months. I have been using this body wash has lasted me around 5 months with 3-4 usages and there's still well another few weeks worth left. A total bang for the buck, I am curious to try out the other variants.
L'Oreal Total Repair Serum. (230/80ml). WNRP.
  • Texture: super slippery, not too runny serum
  • Usage Timeline: On and off post shampoo to damp hair
  • Fragrance: Has a sharp salty and floral smell that lingers, it's not as unpleasant but I didn't like it
  • Experience: Firstly, awful packaging, I've wasted so much product because of it leaks through the cap if not kept in upright position even for a short while. Had to do the polythene between the cap and bottle to stop it from leaking all over my vanity storage. It's an okay serum, it adds shine and smoothness and is good at frizz control so I have used it as an SOS option for when I have to go out. However, it makes my super greasy after day 1. Since, last six months or so it also irritates my face and neck skin if I don't keep my hair away in a half up or full updo style even though it hadn't expired. Anyhow, I will not be purchasing this serum again.
Celtar SA+ Coal Tar Shampoo, WNRP. Free Sample with a bigger bottle.
  • Texture: Very thick
  • Usage Timeline: Used it for 3 weeks
  • Fragrance: Has that distinct tingy smell of salicylic acid
  • Experience: This dried out my scalp and hair like no one's business. I had bought a bigger bottle like 3-4 years ago before going to a dermat for my scalp psoriasis thinking it would help. It did not. In general this seems like a lower quality product, I don't know why I thought buying random cheap shampoos off of amazon was a smart move. Ketoconazole + Zinc Pyrothine shampoos all the way for treating my scalp psoriasis and nothing else.

2024.05.06 18:04 dclaghorn Exhaust From Shed

I’m planning on building a shed for my Westinghouse generator. When using it just on the ground, it completely wipes out the grass in the lawn. I’m worried that if I just run the exhaust straight out of the shed I’ll have the same issue. I’m thinking I could use an end cap that would allow the exhaust out but mitigate rain from entering. Has anyone had any experience with venting upwards in a chimney?

2024.05.04 22:08 one__winged__angel Level 3 survey didn't detect damp and flat roof falling apart

Hi all,
My partner and I moved in to our first home (3 bed semi-detached) on the 29th. We've paid to have the upstairs decorated, and as he has painted bedroom 1 which has a felt flat-roofed bay window, a piece of plaster fell off revealing a damp problem. It's localised to one 'corner' of the bay window, and we had a reputable local roofer come to check it out. He got up there with a drone and safe to say, it's in a right state. At some point it had a bodged repair which has kept it from completely failing but it needs a new roof.
Our level 3 survey did detect very small signs of damp around a chimney breast in the downstairs of the house, and we already have plans in place to rectify this (the chimney needs repair and capping off). We also have a flat roof in the rear of the property for a previously built extension, which was inspected as you can see it from a rear bedroom window.
Can we get any recompense for the level 3 survey missing this issue? We haven't had our quote through yet, but we are going to complete the chimney repair and required roof repair (ridge tiles, these were noted on the survey) at the same time as replacing the flat roof. I would imagine in total it will be about £3600, £1200 for the bay window, but we will be getting our full quote shortly.

Factors to consider when choosing roofing materials
When selecting roofing materials for your property in Tustin, CA, it's important to consider several factors. These factors will help you determine the most suitable materials for your specific needs. Here are some key considerations:
  1. Climate: Tustin, CA, experiences a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot summers. Consider the weather patterns in your area, including temperature fluctuations, rainfall, and wind speeds. Choose materials that can withstand the local climate and provide adequate protection.
  2. Aesthetics: Your roof plays a significant role in the overall appearance of your property. Consider the architectural style and color palette of your home or business when selecting roofing materials. Choose materials that complement the existing design and enhance the curb appeal.
  3. Durability: Assess the lifespan of different roofing materials and their resistance to common issues such as cracks, leaks, and rot. Choose materials that offer long-term durability and require minimal maintenance.
  4. Energy efficiency: Energy-efficient roofing materials can help reduce your heating and cooling costs. Look for materials that have high thermal resistance and reflectivity, keeping your property cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
  5. Budget: Consider your budget when selecting roofing materials. Some materials may be more expensive upfront but offer long-term cost savings due to their durability and energy efficiency. Balance your budget with the desired aesthetics and durability of the materials.
By considering these factors and consulting with a roofing professional in Tustin, CA, you can choose the right roofing materials that meet your specific requirements.
Steps involved in the roofing installation process
The roofing installation process involves several steps to ensure a sturdy and reliable roof for your property. While the exact process may vary depending on the roofing materials and the specific requirements of your project, here is a general overview of the steps involved:
  1. Initial assessment: A roofing professional will assess the condition of your existing roof (if applicable) and discuss your needs and preferences. They will take measurements and conduct a thorough inspection to identify any underlying issues that need to be addressed.
  2. Material selection: Based on the assessment and your preferences, the roofing professional will help you choose the most suitable roofing materials. They will consider factors such as durability, aesthetics, and budget to ensure the best fit for your project.
  3. Preparation: The roofing professional will prepare the site by removing any existing roofing materials, cleaning the surface, and repairing any underlying structural issues. This ensures a solid foundation for the new roof.
  4. Installation: The roofing professional will begin the installation process by installing the underlayment, which provides an additional layer of protection against moisture. They will then install the roofing materials according to the manufacturer's guidelines and industry best practices.
  5. Flashing and ventilation: The roofing professional will install flashing, which prevents water from seeping into vulnerable areas such as valleys and chimneys. They will also ensure proper ventilation to prevent moisture buildup and improve energy efficiency.
  6. Finishing touches: The roofing professional will complete the installation by adding the final details, such as ridge caps, trim, and gutters. They will inspect the roof for any imperfections and make necessary adjustments to ensure a seamless and watertight finish.
Throughout the installation process, the roofing professional will prioritize safety, quality, and attention to detail. They will keep you informed about the progress and address any concerns or questions you may have.
Cost considerations when hiring a roofing professional
The cost of hiring a roofing professional in Tustin, CA, can vary depending on several factors. Here are some cost considerations to keep in mind:
  1. Roof size: The size of your roof is a significant factor in determining the cost. Larger roofs require more materials and labor, resulting in higher costs.
  2. Roof pitch: Steeper roofs can be more challenging and time-consuming to work on, increasing the overall cost.
  3. Roofing materials: The type of roofing materials you choose will impact the cost. Some materials, such as metal or slate, can be more expensive than asphalt shingles.
  4. Accessibility: If your roof is difficult to access or requires special equipment, the cost may be higher.
  5. Repairs or additional work: If there are underlying issues or additional work required, such as structural repairs or sheathing replacement, it can increase the overall cost.
  6. Labor and permits: Labor costs and permit fees will vary depending on the complexity of the project and local regulations.
While cost is an important consideration, it's essential to prioritize quality and expertise when hiring a roofing professional. Choosing the cheapest option may result in subpar workmanship and potential issues down the line. Obtain multiple quotes, compare the services offered, and consider the reputation and experience of the roofing professional before making a decision.
Conclusion
In conclusion, selecting the right roofing professional is crucial for the safety and longevity of your home. Prioritize qualifications, such as licenses and certifications, as well as experience and a solid reputation. Effective communication throughout the process is essential. By investing time in research and selecting a qualified, experienced, and reputable roofer, you ensure your project is completed with precision and professionalism. With Orange County Rain Gutters, you can have confidence in the durability and reliability of your roof for years to come.

When is the Right Time to Visit Manali: A Complete Travel Guide
https://preview.redd.it/b7pv6cluuqxc1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05f01013b7c1160548b4045ab67736588717b4ea
There's no denying the breathtaking beauty of Manali - from its snow-capped Himalayan peaks and green valleys to its gushing river streams and scenic trail walks. But this popular hill station in Himachal Pradesh has very distinct weather patterns that can make or break your vacation experience. Timing your visit to coincide with the right season is crucial to have an unforgettable trip. In this guide, let's take an in-depth look at the pros and cons of each season in Manali to help you decide when to plan your getaway and choose the best Manali mall road hotels.

Summer in Manali (April - June)

The summer months are considered one of the best times to visit Manali and check into the 3 star hotels or 4 star hotels on Mall Road. Here's what you can expect:
Pros:
  • Pleasant daytime temperatures ranging between 15°C to 25°C, perfect for sightseeing
  • The melting snow feeds rivers and streams, providing ideal conditions for adventure activities like white water rafting, river crossing, etc.
  • This is peak season for outdoor activities like trekking, paragliding, camping as most operators and campsites are fully functional
  • Lovely views of snow-capped mountains against a vibrant green landscape
Cons:
  • It's the busiest tourist season, so you'll face large crowds almost everywhere you go, including at the hotels in Manali mall road
  • Hotels and flights tend to be most expensive during these months, so booking well in advance is crucial for the best hotels in Manali
  • Traffic snarls on roads leading up to Manali can delay your travel by hours
Insider Tip: Pack layers as nights can get quite cold despite warm days. Early June is a sweet spot with fewer crowds compared to peak May at the Manali mall road hotels.

Monsoon in Manali (July - Mid September)

The monsoon is generally considered an off-season, but it has its own unique charm. Here's what to expect:
Pros:
  • Lush green hillsides and numerous waterfalls from the rain, creating gorgeous scenery
  • Affordable "monsoon discount" hotel rates across Manali
  • Very low tourist crowds, so you can have attractions largely to yourself
  • Opportunity to experience local festivals like Dhungri Mela in July
Cons:
  • Constant rain showers for stretches at a time, restricting outdoor activities
  • High risk of landslides blocking roads and disrupting transportation
  • Many adventure sports operators shut down due to safety concerns
  • Most restaurants, shops, and facilities remain closed
Local Experience: Head to the Rahala Falls during monsoon when it's at its torrential best, but be wary of slippery pathways.

Peak Season in Manali (Mid September - November)

This is the most popular time for tourists. Here's why:
Pros:
  • Near picture-perfect weather with warm days and cool nights
  • Stunning fall colors in late October and November
  • All restaurants, shops, adventure operators are fully open
  • Clear skies allow unobstructed mountain views, ideal for sightseeing
Cons:
  • Prices for hotels, flights, activities at their highest
  • Have to deal with peak season crowds at every attraction
  • Increased vehicle traffic on roads can cause delays
Insider Tip: For fall colors, visit in early November once peak season crowds have diminished a bit.

Winter in Manali (December - March)

A winter trip to Manali can be an extremely rewarding experience...if you're prepared.
Pros:
  • Pristine snow-covered landscapes all around
  • Opportunity to experience snowfall activities like skiing, sledding, etc.
  • Off-season pricing for accommodation and activities
  • Lack of tourist crowds gives you a serene, local experience
Cons:
  • Night temperatures frequently dip below freezing, days still quite cold
  • Majority of the town's facilities, shops, restaurants remain closed
  • High risk of roads getting blocked by heavy snowfall for days
  • Increased risk of altitude sickness in the cold temperatures
Local Advice: Only visit in winter if you can handle extreme cold. Carry all essentials like layers, medicine, as no last-minute purchases possible.
No matter which season you choose, be sure to pack appropriately for the weather and leave buffer time for road travel. With some planning, Manali can be the mountain escape you've dreamed of!
I hope this detailed guide has helped you evaluate the best timing for your dream Manali vacation based on your preferences and travel style. If you have any other questions, feel free to leave a comment below. And if you found this useful in planning your trip, please share it with your friends who may also be considering Manali. Safe travels!
