2024.05.13 02:06 DillonB13 Where to find 16 ohm crossovers

Just as the title says. I am building some some scale VOTT cabinets to go with a pair of Altec 128a power amps and need a crossover meant for 16ohm drivers. I am having trouble finding any available online. Any help is greatly appreciated.

New Speaker Day: Large Format Altecs with TAD tweeters
Finally finished building my "end game" speakers and wanted to share with everyone. Fell in love with the sound of horns years ago and wanted something to recreate the concert experience indoors. I went back and forth between used Avantgarde Omegas but decided to go the DIY route and have something unique that I could tinker with over time.
Sourced gear from all over the place over a period of 6 months. The TAD beryllium ribbon tweeters and the Altec 416-b woofers were bought used but reconditioned from a boutique audio shop in japan. The Altec 1505b horns were made by Markus Klug in Germany. The crossovers are custom to account for the super tweeters and finally the beautiful walnut Onken 360 cabinets were made by Joe Stewart Speakers in Canada.
I'm still playing with the crossovers, trying to tame the mid/highs and time alignment, but out of the box it's overwhelmingly detailed and the soundstage is huge. It fills the room with 3D sound and the bass is a velvet hammer.
The front of house is a Decware Zen Tori powering them with 20 watts of glorious Class A. And a Micro Seiki Direct Drive turntable. Michi P5 preamp and Ever solo DMP-A6 streamer. Subwoofer is an SVS-16 ultra.
Also lots of bass traps in the corners and diffusers/ absorbtion on first reflection points and behind. If I didn't have 5 inch thick GIK panels I'm afraid the mids/highs would be shrill. Next step is figuring out how to add dampening to the horns.

2024.03.30 04:30 UnivoxBadass Coaxial 12 inch speakers

In many of the old school studios, there's a pair of either Urei 800-series, or Altec 600-series speakers. These were 15" woofers with a compression drivehorn where the dust cap would normally go. The engineers I spoke to said studios used them for a few reasons:
I'd like to do the same, but with a pair of 12" coax. I have a cabinet in mind that I can get from Parts Express, but finding the right speakers has been a real chore. Can anyone recommend a good vintage coax 12" driver that takes a compression driver for the high end?

I‘m a proud owner of Altec 604E and I‘d like to aquire a pair of Mastering Lab XO‘s from an 58 years old guy which doesn‘t have paypal.. I live in switzerland and to do the deal without paypal is for me a huge risk. Is there a fellow Audiophile in Toronto City wich could aquire them and sell me then + a bonus via paypal? The owner of the XO‘s would drop them off in the city..

There's some horns in this house 🔊
I've now spent ~3 weeks with this pair of Technics SB-E200 and they continue to impress...I think they'll be sticking around for quite some time 🤘
I've had a hankering to test out a set of horn-loaded speakers, and was on the verge of firing up an Altec 604 build but the cost and the size of the cabinets I'd need for proper full range sound had me waffling a bit. As I was weighing out the pros and cons of the Altecs, these popped up for sale locally at approximately half the cost, so I jumped on them to see if they'd scratch the itch.
Long story short: they're pretty amazing and the sound they put out is up there among the best I've heard. The horns are very mild mannered and not at all shouty, which I was worried about (especially in my room, which has some quirks).
They've got a very neutral sound signature without being clinical or dry. They're capable of amazing realism, and high quality live recordings have you feeling like you've been transported right to the venue. They're squeezing tons of detail out of songs that I've never heard before, and the soundstage they throw is huge thanks to the 150° dispersion of the horns. For cabinets of this size they pull off an incredible disappearing act that's reminiscent of small bookshelf speakers, which I love.
Mids and highs are incredibly articulate and organic sounding to my ears. The bass is taught and punchy, never ever sloppy thanks to the 12" paper woofers. I've never heard kick drums sound so realisric in my space! The only critique I've got so far is that they don't go quite as low as I'd like in my room, so a sub is likely in order in the near future (leaning towards an SVS 3000 micro at the moment). I know the Technics are capable of digging quite deep, as the bass goes remarkably low when watching movies, but they refuse to colour the music by adding any extra low end when fed anything via my node or my turntable. I'm going to have the crossovers rebuilt with some new capacitors in the near future and see where that gets me as well.
Here's the state of the system at the moment:
-Technics SB-E200 speakers -Yamaha A-S1100 integrated -Node 2i -Thorens TD-165 modded w/ Original Live Rega tonearm and Hana SL cart, all fed into a Parks Audio SUT
All in all this is the best my system has ever sounded, so I'd say mission accomplished!
Happy listening y'all 🤙

2024.03.12 12:41 holger7188 How do people connect crossovers that are outside the speaker chassis to the drivers inside? Drill a hole? Binding posts? (more details in comments)

I want to make new crossovers for my Altec Valencias and am considering keeping them outside the box. So I would solder the wire from amp to the crossover (or use screw down connectors).
But what about the wire from crossover to the woofer and compression drivers? How do people usually run these? Drill a hole? Or connect them through binding posts in the chassis? Or…?
Obviously I want to keep the box as airtight as possible (other than reflex ports)

Home built vintage speaker help!
Picked up these old 1960s cabinets for a (possibly) fun restoration project. The drivers inside are Jensen (mid and tweeter) and the woofer is a Lincoln (Allied Radio). The seller says they were built late 60s, maybe 1970. This seems to be confirmed by the number “68” on the crossover. She believes the components came from a catalog her brother-in-law used to order from. I’m not sure what the cabinet plans were, but it’s solid and heavy. There was another post about these speakers with a very good comment on how they might be improved, but I can’t find it.
The main issue is as they stand, the sound is very loud but muddy and undefined on the top end. Needs to have the treble all the way up on my HK 430 for them to sound close to right. All the drivers work and I can tell there’s “something” hiding in the sound signature. The drivers are supposedly decent quality and the woofer looks like maybe an Utah or Altec clone. I think the issue of muddy, flat sound is indicative of old caps - they look original to me. So step one is replacement - any tips for sourcing and type? Would just some poly caps work? What are the large battery-like components? Do they need addressing too?
There’s also some boominess. I turned them on their sides as that seems more logical to me. Is this an issue? The cabs only have insulation on the sides, bottom and back panel. Should I fill this or at least put some on top? The mid and tweeter boxes have no insulation at all. Should some go in there too? Should the cabinet be braced at all? What’s with the big rectangular port?

2024.03.01 16:21 MBaggott Bob Heil, 1970s Dead sound system designer, has passed from cancer

Here's the story, from Wikipedia, of how he got started with the Dead:
On February 2, 1970, jam band the Grateful Dead were scheduled to play a concert at the Fox Theater in St. Louis. For the tour they were using a sound system run and developed by "Bear" Augustus Owsley Stanley III. Owsley, who had a pending drug charge for producing copious amounts of LSD, was under orders not to leave the state of California. Owsley had been arrested on February 1 for leaving the state while at a Grateful Dead show in New Orleans, with police detaining most of the Dead's sound system as well.[2]
George Bales, a stage hand at Fox Theater gave Jerry Garcia Heil's phone number, and Heil remembers Garcia calling to say "Hey man, I heard you have a really big PA." Heil had been toying and tinkering with the large speakers that the Fox had replaced months earlier with a new system. Heil, one of the two organists at the Mighty Wurlitzer in the Fox (dating back to 1956) was given their old speakers which Heil built into his new sound system using the massive Altec Lansing A-4 speaker cabinets. Heil replaced the 15-inch speakers with JBL D140s, and added an array of four radial horns and ring tweeters all driven by McIntosh amplifiers. He has stated "That made a huge difference. It was like a big 'hi-fi' system. No one was putting radial horns into PA systems; they were just doing speakers in columns, like the Vocalmaster. The horns are what give the system intelligibility — you can actually understand the lyrics." His stack riggings resulted in an unusual frequency range from below 200 Hz to well over 15 kHz.[2]
Heil also brought in a modified Langevin studio recording console, uniquely adapted for live work. Heil's friend Tomlinson Holman, then a young student at the University of Illinois, had helped with the rewiring. (Holman would go on to create the THX theater sound protocol.) Heil himself created an electronic crossover in the console to control speaker output. Beyond the PA system that night, Heil also supplied the mixers, saying "My two roadies, Peter Kimble and John Lloyd, knew all the Dead songs — they were big fans. So that night they moved the PA, set it up and mixed the show."[2]
Heil also had a unique technique to handle the feedback problems; a small second microphone taped behind each main microphone. He stated, "We would run the microphones out of phase from the monitors, something that nobody had been doing yet. Since they were out of phase with the microphones and the FOH system, anything that leaked in from the monitors would be canceled out. As a result, we could get these things incredibly loud before they would feed back. That's one of the things that Jerry Garcia really loved."[2]
The show was a success, and the Grateful Dead asked Heil, his crew, and his sound system to join them on the road. Heil's setup would later become a template for the modern concert touring sound system.[2]

2023.11.10 01:31 48lizards Addressing high-end “grain” in my 1989 Klipschorns

I recently picked up a pair of 1989 Klipschorns. They’re pretty awesome, but do have an issue I’m interested in addressing. To my ears, the highs sound grainy or dusty, sometimes. It’s particularly noticeable to me with vocals.
I’m running them through a Schiit Freya+ tube preamp and Schiit Tyr solid state amps. (I got these previously for my Maggies, which needed more power.) It doesn’t seem to make a difference to the grain whether I engage the tubes or not.
My question is - what should I try changing to address this?
I’ve heard other horn speakers (e.g. Ojas, Altec) that don’t have this quality, so I don’t think it’s an intrinsic property of horns.
I can think of these options - Try different amplification - Recap the crossover network (AK2 that hasn’t been touched since ‘89 afaik) - Update the crossover network to AK3 spec - Replace the crossover network (e.g. ALK) - Replace the tweeter (e.g. Crites) - Replace the midrange horn - Room treatment
How should I approach narrowing it down?

2023.10.19 22:40 phiinkes My Altec Model 14’s kind of suck…

I have had some model 14’s for around 2 years. They’re my daily drivers in my main system powered by a Sony TA-N80ES with some pioneer elite modern receiver as my Pre.
I was fucking around with my AR90’s in my bedroom set and heard some humming at the beginning of Fleetwood’s Dreams that I had never heard before and spent about ten minutes looking for the original recording from Rumors that I was used to hearing. Turns out, my Altecs just don’t have that range! It’s buried under the highs so you just can’t hear it unless you’re listening for it.
That was a week ago and ever since I sort of hate the sound of my Altecs, now. I am not willing to do the stereophile mods because I don’t possess the knowledge of operating external crossovers and I really don’t like the idea of taking them away from original; they’re in new-old-stock condition and I would hate to ruin that.
They’re all original capacitors and drivers, would a recap bring them to life, does anyone think? Or am I just hearing the difference between 2 way horns and 4 way dynamic drivers?
I sort of need to keep the Altecs because they really complete my living room, aesthetically. What should I do, everyone? Bring the M500’s in from the garage? Look for some 19’s or Valencia’s? Heresy’s?! I am just lost right now, I guess.

My final Man Cave System
My search is over… I have gone on a long journey and learned that there is a lot different sounds out there. This is what sings to me and my music:
Speakers Frazier Texan low frequency cabinets with altec 808 8a compression drivers and 511b horns. Crossover custom crossed at 600hz Amplifier Reisong mt88 tube integrates Dac Starting point Systems Mini TDA1543 Streamer Nexus Tunebox 3
This system gives me the musicality I have been searching for for 17 years. This also has a very aggressive American muscle look to it which I love. Not the most expensive system spent less than 2k assembling, but love the synergy.

Budget system under 2k all in
I set out to spend under 2k technically way less given my trade in on most of my other hifi equipment. I have relocated my self to main cave garage. I wanted something that looked very much like an American muscle car. I love the way this looks. Rather new to horns but these were the holy grail speakers for me (mostly due to their size and being Texas based).
Frazier Texan speakers with altec 808 8a and 511b horns 500 dollars Reisong mt88 integrated amp 700 dollars Nexus tunebox 3 streamer 75 dollars Starting point systems mini TDA1543 DAC 25 dollars AV stand (1960 craftsman tool box) 80 dollars Crossover components 120 dollars Cables ~ 100 dollars Total 1600 dollars
This is not the most revealing system I have owned and not the best imagining. It is the system that make me enjoy the music the most. It has an effortlessness and power to it. Hope everyone is enjoying the journey.

2023.09.04 07:57 Even_Departure6569 Question regarding Altec 612 Horn Mod DIY (Ojas inspired)

Can anybody explain me what speakers and horns are the best?
should i get the jbl 328c with horns and build it the same like the ojas or should i get another pair of speaker and driver with or maybe DIY crossover.
Depends on the quality, price and time to build. As cheaper as better but without lack of quality of course, but there is no need for gold cables and other hifi vodoo :)))
My plan is not to waist too much time on building this because i want the finished product and learn how to build differnt kind of speakers.
Espeacially i have to learn about crossover and Amps and other Equipment used for this passive PA System.
For the cabinets i will go for 18mm plywood and use the altec 612 constrution plan. finishing with grey paint like the ojas.
At the Moment it seems to me the easiest way is to replicate the OJas Horn mod and combined with the DIY Altec 612 Cabinent but im not sure if thats the best option in price and quality.
Especially where do i get this metal plate from to cover the back of the driver?
What (Tube) Amp will be the best for my speakers? Especially if i want to use them in a club venue with a diy sub.
And what components will i need else?
THX

2023.08.12 00:00 faithfulhusband1313 Need help with distortion with Altec A7s

Hi,
Currently, one of my altec A7s is outputting quite a bit of distortion. I have reconnected the cables. Still can’t figure out what’s causing the distortion, it’s coming from both vinyl to mixer to receiver, and digital to receiver (when a phone is plugged in). So I know it’s not the mixe vinyl or even the digital connection. It’s also specific to the horn (or most noticeable) I have attached 3 videos, two of which show you the distortion, and one video showing the connection to the crossover. Let me know if any ideas, would be greatly appreciated!!

2023.06.23 16:23 GoldPanda Crossover Design Advice

Hi All,
I've made some research progess on my Altec build (Sorry, this again)
Altec 416 8 A Loudspeaker
Altec 299 8 A Comp Driver
Altec 803B Multi Cell Horn
I have collated as much information as possible and wonder if this is enough to build a first iteration crossover with. Working thus far:
https://imgur.com/a/snwgXlM
The loudspeaker cabinet is to exact spec, i.e. I have the 416 8 A and will be building the onken to that spec so in theory the frequency response should be the same or similar.
The 299 8A compression driver response is not potentially correct as its with the wrong horn, however, I have included some info about the 803B horn I will be attaching to the driver which may help estimate the response. Data is based on the 288 driver which is very close to the 299.
In the onken docs it says to crossover at 600Hz.
http://www.planet10-hifi.com/downloads/Hiraga-Onkens-English.pdf
Would this play nice with what is known so far about the horn and driver?
https://greatplainsaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/299-Series_hfdriver_spec_sheet.pdf
https://greatplainsaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Multi-Cell-Horns2.pdf
With all that said, if it's enough info potentially, how would you design the crossover? I appreciate that I could measure when I have it built with a DATS, but would love to have an head start idea to tune from if possible.
From my own limited knowledge, it looks like the 600hz crossover would be good, but the horn db is somewhat higher.. even the correct horn is reporting 118db ... so I would need to bring that down to the level of the loudspeaker which is sub 100db correct?
Thanks in advance.
