Inspiring verbs

Which first names in English are funny/strange in your native language.

2024.06.09 19:40 DallaRag Which first names in English are funny/strange in your native language.

Taking the inspiration from the question that has been recently posted, but doing it the opposite way. Which English first names or nicknames sound funny or strange or ridiculous in your native language?
I'll start: in Italian slang, the word pippa (like Pippa Middleton) means wank/handjob, or alternatively, wimp. If used as a verb (pippare), it means snorting cocaine.

2024.06.09 18:01 impishDullahan Speedlang 19 Showcase

Good marrow, bonelickers!
Early last month I announced the 19th Speedlang Challenge. I broke the mould with it a little bit by confining how the ambitious among you would actually put together your speedlangs rather than defining a number of requisite features. The bulk of this process had speedlangers root all their creative linguistic decisions in a small set of natlangs, and these natlangs specifically had to be native to areas representative of a chosen clade of organisms. To ensure the clade of organisms was well represented, I also asked for a number of lexical items and conceptual metaphors that had to be specifically inspired by the clade in some way, as well as some aspect of the phonology.
Like last time, I'll provide my thoughts about what I think makes each submission special and the features I particularly like. Afterwards, I'll quickly review what was inspired by the chosen clade, in case that has any bearing on what you kind readers might like to check out, and give out brownie points for any easter eggs I spot, whether intended or not.
Overall this has been a deeply creative round of submissions and I learned a lot, both things I set out to achieve when I thought up this particular challenge. I hope it was just as rewarding a challenge for everyone who submitted as it was for me getting to read up on each entry, and I hope it will be the same for anyone who reads up on them, too.

Seba Bàsa by Miacomet

Gyps (griffon vultures); Chamic, Bengali, Santali & Mundari
With a name including the element Bàsa, I knew this had to have Indic flavours of one sort of another, and indeed it does! This conlang is largely Austronesian in origin with sound changes from Old Cham, but it has a lot of Bengali influence and is well situated in the Indian subcontinent, and I greatly appreciate the nod to Parsi funerary traditions as an inspiring reason for choosing Gyps. Amusingly, this conlang has many features that fit right into the inspiration for the last speedlang challenge, which I find just delightful, with some split-S marking, dative enclitics, and grammaticalised constructions for simultaneous and sequential events, and light pronouns. Therebeside, the historical clipping, CVK syllable structure, postpositional pronouns, and aspectual auxiliaries speak to sensibilities in my own conlanging, and the dissimilation processes in some of the affixes are a nice touch, too. I'm also a big of fan just how the split-S system is implicated in some verbal polysemy, and I really like how the few voices seem kinda muddy but have clear use cases. What really sets this conlang apart, though, is the consideration paid to the effect of prestige languages. Some phonemes are restricted to loanwords from the local prestige language, and one is even only confined to prestige language-educated speakers, which causes some allophony other speakers don't have. Loaning processes are detailed, too, and the number and classifier system also draws nice lines along the prestige axis with a total of 3 parallel number systems, spread out across both divisions of native vs. loaned classifiers, which themselves have specific semantic domains they each classify, and across divisions of prestige language education. The story at the end, too, is a real treat: it's a translation of Hindu vulture myth, perfect for this project.
Seba Bàsa's Gyps-inspired phonology includes the development of creaky voice from the loss of glottals, glottalised consonants, and final /s/ in Old Cham to recall vulture cries. It's inspired lexicon includes some fun polysemy of vulture behaviours like circling = waiting or sheepling = looking for something desirable. I'm also a big fan of kite (the bird) = messy eater. It's inspired conceptual metaphors include dividing the beginning, middle, and end of a process into eating skin, meat, and bones, respectively, and equating head height/position with one's health or comfortableness as inspired by how vultures droop their heads when ill.
We're starting off string with double brownie points for meeting both the space epic easter egg by calquing the Ewokese word for 'outsider' and the empress easter egg by referring to Buddha's Birthday!

Kogëdek by u/Porpoise_God

Setonix & Macropodidae more generally (quokkas + kangaroos & wallabies); Noongar, Pitjantjatjara, Wajarri, Guugu Yimithirr, Miriwoong, Guniyandi, Dyirbal, Mbabaram
Aside from the one splant you'll soon see, I think this entry gets the prize for the most unique chosen clade by being A) not a bird, and B) not an ungulate. As great as birds are, quokkas are pretty amazing, too. I'm not too familiar with Pama-Nyungan languages but this did a good job of affecting some of the features I've come to know them for, including but not limited to the phonological natural classes of peripheral vs. coronal, coverb constructions, and the word for 'dog' bearing a striking similarity to English. Split-ergativity features across the noun-pronoun axis, and there's a unique set of duals that specifically refer to sibling, parent-child, or spousal pairs of individuals that I might have to steal for myself. The case marking includes a lative case I haven't seen before, and implicates the comitative in a neat way in comparative constructions. I also appreciate the what-looks-to-be resumptive subject pronominal proclitics; very speedlang 18, and a great example of a fossilised mistake, which I always love to see! The verbs also feature multiple conjugations, and the imperative is implicated for its tenselessness in certain subclause constructions, which has a certain type of quirkiness I'd expect out of some past speedlang challenges.
Kogëdek's Setonix-inspired phonology included a /ç/ in the proto-lang, which bears some resemblance to quokka calls, although it was lost to /s/ and /x/ in the modern language. The inspired lexical entries include roots for different kinds of macropods and styles of jumping, and conflates jumping with breathing. Some of the idioms include "pouch-baby" for pejorative "mama's-boy" and using kangaroo badassery as a metaphor for all sorts of less than ideal situations.
Brownie points for a particularly insidious word-form for 'father'.

Yatakang by Lichen

Bubalus (water buffaloes); Hindi-Urdu, Thai, Vietnamese, Khmer, Burmese, Malay
This one's a little rough around the edges, but it's a good foundation for a nice mix of both SEA features, like the isolating morphosyntax, and unique features, like the class agreement system. It's also got clicks limited to avoidance speech! Diachronics from a proto-lang where considered, and I really like how the typologies of the inspo langs were used as targets for the sound changes. I'll have to keep this workflow in mind! Some of the sound changes include expanding the number of stop contrasts to match the average number of contrasts, or eroding the number of vowels to match that of Malay. Phonotactics were carefully considered with full structures for both mono- and disyllables as well as bare roots vs. compound stems. Grammatically, morphology is mostly limited to a host of different reduplication patterns, which in itself is something I'd really like to see more of! Where this really shines, though, is with its agreement system: nouns are sorted into a 3x2 matrix of 6 classes, portmanteau agreement particles mark for the class of both the subject and the object, the system implicates the social hierarchies common to many SEA languages, and the position of the particle marks modality. Incredibly inspired to pack all that into a set of maybe 36 particles, if you ask me, never mind how it helps to disambiguate fluid word class and how it might be implicated in future plans for Indonesian object-oriented verbs. I'm also a fan of how the temporal question verb patterns like an agreement particle to mark for tense by co-opting the modality marking. We also get some prosody-syntax interfacing with different pitch contours at clause boundaries operating as different sorts of conjunctions.
Yatakang's Bubalus-inspired phonology includes a combination of creaky voice and syllabic nasals to affect a mooing phonaesthetic. The lexical entries exhibit some nice semantic drift from water buffalo activities and behaviours towards more human behaviours, and the planned phrase of hat-hand stroke fur for "suddenly realise a problem, and then pretend there isn't one" just feels exactly like an observation a water buffalo would make observing its human, which I really like. The inspired metaphors are also simple and straightforward, likening roundedness to goodness or knowledge to food, which makes for some brilliantly idiomatic language like "I ate the book" to mean "I read and understood the contents of the book."
Extra brownie points for including both halves of the space epic easter egg to placate both sides of nerddom; the term 'tax-man' is everything it ought to be.

Kurikiri by Jjommoma

Casuariiformes (cassowaries and emus); Dhuwal, Motu, Tok Pisin
Compared to most other entries, this one's very short and sweet with some Australian sounds and some head-final Papuan grammar (however loose a description that is). That being said, Kurikiri is very inventive in being partially signed with much of its grammatical marking encoded by actions done with the foot, including number, case, definiteness, and some basic TAM.
Aside from the cassowary foot action grammar markers, as well as some lexical entries there-related, Kurikiri also equates flightedness to being ostentatious, disdaining flighted birds out of envy, which I think is a fun thought process for these terrestrially confined birds. There's also some neat phonosemantics in the taboo word for predator being especially difficult to pronounce.
This wasn't the intent, but I'm giving some space epic brownie points for the foot grammar if for nothing else than that it reminds me of Paul Frommer's Thark from John Carter and its telepathic grammatical and verbal lexical expression.

Whaynisiday by u/Fimii

Spheniscidae (penguins); Māori, Xhosa, Quechua
What do you do when the entire population of penguins achieves human-like levels of intelligence after some gene splicing and they start calling for a language to call their own? Why, you do exactly what the prompt of this challenge asks for and combine the languages native to the homeland of the blue, african, and humboldt penguins! The write up for this conlang does a great job of pointing out what features are from which language exactly, and plays a fun balancing game between some of the phonological and grammatical extremes in its sourcelangs. In so doing it has a few quirks that really tickle the intersection of my linguist and conlanger venn diagram, specifically the presence of what I'd have to interpret as onset morae, as well as semantic noun class marked solely through agreement (which is very Varamm, so I'm not at all biased towards it). There's a handful of fun, rare cases, and the simulative mood fits right into the inspirations for the last challenge to create some vaguely Tupian simultaneous actions. There's a bunch more little grammatical bits that are fun, but impressionistically I appreciate how the more isolating grammar of Māori was incorporated into the synthetic common ground of the other 2 sourcelangs.
Whaynisiday's Spheniscidae-inspired phonology includes a couple syringeal sounds to complement the otherwise human capable inventory. The highlighted lexical entries pay special attention to how penguins locomote with basic stems for different kinds of movement options both on land and in the water, as well as a split in breathing for whether its on land at rest or in the water being active. The conceptual metaphors include a great model of time with the past on land and the future in the inky depths, and the very adorable notion that safety = community, and so naturally a farewell would be a wish of friendship.

Poro by The Inky Baroness

Rangifer tarandus subsp. (domestic reindeers); Proto-Samic, Komi-Zyrian, Tundra Nenets, Chukchi
Where do I even begin with this one? I was excited to read this one when I first received it, but it was even better than I could have hoped when I got round to reading it! Although, not for any linguistic reasons: the first half of the doc reminds me of Gillian Teft's Anthro-Vision as an anthropological account of reindeers written by a fictitious Finnish researcher rather than any sort of sketched reference grammar, which I love dearly. The latter half, meanwhile, goes into great detail about what went into the first half, including all sorts of motivations or reasons for the decisions made. Some diachrony is detailed, as well as the effects of language contact rooted in actual historical events relevant to the chosen sourcelangs, which is just great to see. I loved the ways in which each of the different sourcelangs were all represented in the final product with it being Samic in origin but including some phonological and grammatical borrowings from Komi and Nenets like the lack of consonant gradation, the verb-final syntax, some vowel changes, and a fantastic predestinative affix that interacts with the conceptualisation of time in some neat ways. All the while, care was taken to do a wealth of research at every step in the process with a fairly extensive bibliography. Hoof clicks all around for this one!
Poro's Rangifer-inspired phonology includes a deer bellow as some sort of epiglottal obstruent that actually patterns with the Nenets glottal stop, as well as some other approximated reindeer vocalisations including what I presume to be grunts or chuffs, both oral and nasal. Care was also taken to think about what a fully reindeerised descendant of Proto-Samic would look like as accords with the included etiological myth for reindeers and reindeer husbandry, but this was well beyond the scope of a speedlang. The lexical entries include all sorts of terms for reindeer physiology, including but not limited to antler velvet, different types of vocalisations, and hoof clicks. These lexical entries feature in some wonderful idioms using antlers to describe social hierarchy, useful- or uselessness, and glibness or malicious intent, as well as an equivalent to "when pigs fly": "to catch a bird between one's hooves."
Extra brownie points both for the nominal hierarchical exaltation of mothers baked into reindeer culture and inclusion of an anti-imperialist message in promoting the research of the under-represented and often stigmatised language and culture of traditionally reindeer herding peoples. Also do keep an eye out for Dr. Dolittle easter eggs: Inky will reward you handsomely if you can spot one!

Kiwi by NerpNerp

Apteryx & Novaeratitae more broadly (kiwis + cassowaries & emus); English, Māori, Traditional Tiwi, Miriwoong, Bardi
Given the number of bird entries with Indo-Pacific flavours, I'm almost half surprised this was the only kiwi entry: they're such good birbs! As might be expected, this conlang endeared itself to me just as its namesake does. The phonology has all sorts of trills and rhotics, and limits itself to high vowels; it's also got some neat phrase level prosody to mark different sorts of modal information and focus, even including an intrusive glottal stop at the sentence level. Noun incorporation is varied and detailed, and can create some polysynthetic constructions as a consequence of just how exactly the rest of the otherwise fairly analytic morphosyntax works. I'm a particular fan of the deictic categories including 7 different degrees of deixis characterising both distance and motion, and I'm also a fan of of the grammaticalised time of day. Heximal numbers and coverb constructions also feature. There's even a kiwi-capable featural alphabet that each of the examples show off!
Kiwi's Apteryx-inspired phonology includes the trills and high vowels being inspired by kiwi calls and I imagine a little of their anatomy with those long, thin bills. The inspired lexemes include specific types of smells humans can't detect at the expense of any colour terms, reflecting kiwis nocturnal, smell-based lifestyles. The idioms for "a long time ago" or "once upon a time" is absolutely delightful--"when kiwis flew"--and the grammaticalised time of day subdivides the night but not the day, as might be expected from a nocturnal beastie.

Asamiin by Christian Evans

Asamina (pawpaws); Ottawa, Unami, Tuscarora, Mikasuki, Chitimacha, Timucua
The speech that nourishes! And a splant, too, no less; I was hoping for at least one of these! This one's made all the better by delving into some Eastern North American languages and I really like the flavours this lends itself to. Syncope is abound with all sorts of morphological obfuscation through detailed phonological processes, and animacy plays a key role in the verb complex. Care was also taken to find a phonological common ground between all the sourcelangs, which made for a really interesting set of vowels with a basic 6 vowel inventory, but with 2 nasal vowels that can surface as vocalic allophones to the nasal consonants. The grammar is fairly straightforward but has a few quirks that I really appreciate, including but not limited to the fluid O placement to make for some syntactic focusing strategies I so adore and the optional, enclitic case marking narrowed by various postpositions used as another, separate means of focus. Overall just really well laid out and the formatting is really cute, something I've now come to expect after Yumpịku last time.
Asamiin's Asamina-inspired phonology includes a pharyngeal approximant to recall the really long taproot pawpaws grow, as well as regressive sibilant harmony to recall the mimicry the flowers employ to attract pollinators, both of which are some really inspired departures from the sourcelangs.

Ekaangäq by Atyx

Haliaeetus pelagicus (Steller's sea eagle); Chukchi, Alyutor, Koryak, Itelmen, Ainu, Nivkh, Evenki, Uilta
A bird that escapes any Indo-Pacific flavours? Well I'll be! Instead of South Pacific this one gives all sorts of North Pacific energy being spoken by a population of eaglefolk native to the Sea of Okhotsk and representative of the languages spoken along its coasts. The Ainu flavours are especially strong with both an Ainu-based consonant inventory and a kana orthography, among others. The vowels also show some interesting lopsidedness with 2 creaky vowels complementing an otherwise fairly straightforward 6 vowel system that feature in a front-back vowel harmony system, though I'm a real fan of the sandhi rules at word boundaries that cause all sorts of fun consonant alternations. Word stress is also detailed and has funky placement rules at odds with my understanding of theoretical prosodic processes! Grammatically there's a few quirks that really stand out to me and tickle my curiosity: a dual distinction on the nouns but not in the pronouns, and polypersonal agreement in a transitive alignment system, the only departure from direct, accusative, and/or ergative alignment in this round of submissions. I also appreciate some of the syncretism in the pronouns!
Ekkangäq's Haliaeetus-inspired phonology includes entirely unrounded vowels and a lack of any labial consonants to reflect the speakers have beaks, as well as the 2 creaky vowels as rooted in their physiology, a common theme for this challenge. The lexicon includes some distinctions between diving and eating as it applies to different kinds of prey. The conceptual metaphor, though, I think is really great equating the passage of time with ice: an iceberg calving off a glacier is birth, melting is ageing, and melting all away is dying. Great stuff!
I think I actually have to give negative brownie points for this one: as much as I appreciate 3 separate orthographies (Kana, Cyrillic, Latin) for some historicity, they are all at odds with the anti-imperialism the brownie criterion requires, and there's no girl power to balance it out.

Taqồpaq by accruenewblue

Gallus (jungefowl); Hindi-Urdu, Burmese, Thai, Punjabi, Tamil, Indonesian
I'm a little surprised this is, I think, the only truly tonal submission despite all the SEA birds, and it's less synthetic than most in this round of submissions. In either case, this one does a great job of illustrating some tonogenesis and some recent and still very transparent synthetic developments from a formerly isolating language. The tones are simple registers, but they interact with morae in some neat rightwards reassigning sandhi patterns, and they complement a system of 12 vowels in a 3x2x2 matrix of height, frontedness, and roundedness. There's even some vocalic nasal allophones (which is twice now in this round of submissions), and labial consonant-vowel harmony to boot! Grammatically I greatly appreciate all the call-outs for similarities to natural languages, and I wanna shout-out the use of a positive tag question instead of negative. The numbers have this funky sexagesimal base with an octal sub-base and remnants of an old decimal sub-base, which recalls some of the duodecimal remnants in the otherwise decimal system of many European languages.
Taqồpaq's Gallus-inspired phonology includes the tonal system being described as recalling a rooster's crow. The lexicon includes roots for all things chicken, including using the word for 'wattle' as a classifier for hanging things, which is so delightfully what I wanted out of this challenge. The more idiomatic language makes use of chicken behaviours as descriptors: dust baths are metaphors for something useful but not everyone's cup of tea, and continuing to brood after the chicks have hatched is a metaphor for doing a good thing so long it has negative consequences.
Extra brownie points for exalting queen Trưng, first queen of Vietnam, and a nationalist hero who fought against Chinese imperialism. Double whammy right there!

Ngālin by u/borago_officinalis

Aptenodytes forsteri (emperor penguins); Awabakal, Māori, Norwegian
We already had a penguin splang but this one's a nice twist by focusing on the territorial claims of Antarctica rather than the ranges of more temperate inclined penguins where there are actually native languages. This does a great job of shirking the indigenous implication in the language selection step of the challenge (although I'm very glad to see no English or Spanish), so there's a really neat mix of isolating Māori particles with a fusional Germanic verbal system, and I was able to easily pick up on both reading through the doc. The verb system actually pleases me greatly with a strong/weak contrast and a V2 word order wherein the strong verbs mark tense through stem change and the weak verbs with a tense auxiliary, all whilst maintaining a very Polynesian aesthetic despite the very Germanic number of vowels. The Māori possessive system is also really fun, I think. I can't speak to the Awabakal influences, but I was able to pick up on the one, tiny Mapudungan influence of tone tag particles before it was even explicitly mentioned! Not sure where the negation system came from, but it implicates the weak verbs in a way I so adore. Really sweet, despite the fun grim facts about emperor penguin hatchlings, and I found this one just darling. The myth at the end about how penguins lost their ability to fly is also real treat and is a perfect fit for the project.
Ngālin doesn't have any A. forsteri-inspired phonology, but it makes up for it with the inspired lexicon and idiomatic language. The emperor penguin breeding cycle is detailed with translations for all the important terms along the way, including but not limited to the ritual of transferring egg from mother to father and "motherless" to refer to a newborn, whose mother hasn't yet returned from the sea. There's some great, everyday idioms elided down from full phrases for greeting and consoling another penguin being "which way?" and "next year", and conceptualising a long distance as specifically the distance from colony to see is a nice touch. I also appreciate how the relationship between creche-mates is more important than that between (half-)siblings.
I have to give queen exaltation brownie points purely for the one illustrative example of āmā o pipa "hatchling's mum" grammatically indicating the senior authority of an empress penguin.

Honourable Mention

I've been kept somewhat apprised of a Urile (North Pacific cormorants) splang by u/PastTheStarryVoids. It's still very much in the works, but it sounds funky with both some polysynthetic flavours, no doubt inspired by some PNW languages, I imagine, and some formorant (cormorant formant) analysis! Keep an eye out for it, I'm sure it'll grace the sub in due time!

---

And that's everything I've seen in the time I put together this showcase. I know there were a few among you all who felt inspired but couldn't put anything together during the course of this challenge. I remember mention of a banana and a tree kangaroo splang on the announcement post. If anyone ever uses the challenge to inspire a future project of theirs, please keep me apprised! I'd be interested in seeing them if for nothing else than to see some more projects outside of South Asian and Oceanian birds, as great as those birbs are. I can't believe I didn't see a single monotreme or non-ungulate eutherian, and that there weren't any non-avian reptiles or anything fully aquatic! And no fossil clades, too, for that matter! I'm positive there are the makings of some really funky splangs if the relevant modern continental and climactic boundaries didn't yet exist.
In any case, I hope all parties involved had a great deal of fun through the course of this challenge! I know I did! Until next marrow, bonelickers!

2024.06.09 15:50 symonx99 Modality in Kèilem

I've already made some posts featuring specific grammatical aspects of Kèilem, mainly focusing on locational and dispositional verbs, movement verbs, the anaphoric use of adjectives and light verbs and proverbs in Kèilem, alongside an article about the expressive usage of ideophones and noun incorporation featured in issue 12, Supra II of segments.
Inspired by this post by u/Fractal_fantasy I finally decided to complete the grammar section on Kèilem modality, of which I'm going to give an overview in this post.
As always, all the sentences are written in IPA with the only deviation from the usual conventions being the expression of geminated consonants as kk instead of k: for instance.
Participant-internal modality
Participant-internal ability is expressed through two different auxiliary verbs that get serialized with the main verb of the sentence Laci and Lawa, the first refers to the physical ability to perform a certain task, a certain action, while the second is used to express an ability that arises by virtue of having the time, authorization, knowledge to perform a certain task:
Laci zasti dali
Can fast run
I can run fast
Lawa boɗa lo fu
Can wait ABS 2SG
I can wait for you
As is usually the case in Kèilem when talking about the ability of someone else, one cannot simply use a sentence that expresses certainty but one has to either serialize some kind of dubitative modal or use an evidential that expresses whence the belief present in the sentence comes from, or with a seems/appear to kind of verb. Below there are some example of evidentials, some of them will appear again in the epistemic modality section.
Participant-internal necessity is expressed through the verb kola, which can be either used serialized with another verb describing an action or a situation or can simply take the object of the need (a person, water, etc), this verb can be translated as need or as want, depending on the kind of, mainly ideophonic, modifiers it gets attached by.
By itself it is almost always translatable as want, the exceptions involves situations that are obviously outside the volitional capability of the subject/speaker e.g. kola negem (I need to sleep, in kèilem, feeling tired implies a non volitionality) kola kakin (i need to pee)
The main modifiers used to express varying degrees of necessity are korokon, buɻan buɻan and mitikin, with a decreasing level of necessity:
For instance with the verb to eat naje
mitikin kola naje lo tani
IDEO want eat ABS bread
I want a bit to eat some bread
buɻan buɻan kola naje lo tani
IDEO want eat ABS bread
I crave some bread
korokon kola naje lo tani IDEO want eat ABS bread
I’m starving for bread
The level of necessity can also be expressed through certain verbs with subject/object verbal incorporation and serialization:
zai kola lae kola naje lo tani
Cat want fish want eat ABS bread
I want to eat the bread as a cat wants a fish
zai ukal lae kola naje lo tani
Cat see fish want eat ABS bread
I want to eat the bread as a cat who looks at a fish (desires it)
Necessity that doesn’t arise from oneself (a desire/physical need) but that stems from some program or goal is handled by the same verb that handles participant-external necessity, the verb koɓe
maɻaa, koɓe dase zasre karem
Bye, need go_way_hearer go_towards place_name
Bye, I need to go away towards karem (obviously it is not an internal compulsion, but there is some kind of external reason/goal).
Participant-external modality
Goal-oriented participant-external modality is expressed through the same koɓe verb used to express goal oriented participant-internal needs, without a distinction between possibility (to do x, you can do y) and necessity (to do x, you have to do y).
The goal or the desired situation is usually introduced with the expression ɳulemakon (state/situation+things) that highlights that the following sentence is to be interpreted as a proposed/imagined/desired state of things.
ɳulemakon fu zasre ketel, koɓe maʈen lo nodoli ɓali
state.of.affairs: 2SG move.towards village_name, can/must enter ABS second street
If you want to go to Ketel/to go to Ketel, you can/have to take the second street
This distinction can nonetheless be explicited through the addition of other expressions to the sentence: by adding at the end of the sentence kerikerek, which derives from the expression ke ri ke rek (or this or that), the speaker conveys the idea that the action described is the only way to reach the goal
ɳulemakon fu zasre ketel, koɓe maʈen lo nodoli ɓali kerikerek
state.of.affairs: 2SG move.towards village_name, can/must enter ABS second street no.other.way
If you want to go to Ketel/to go to Ketel, you have to take the second street
by qualifying the sentence containing koɓe with the expression maɻamakon (best+thing) the speaker conveys the idea that that is the best, but not the only way to reach the goal.
ɳulemakon fu zasre ketel, maɻamakon koɓe maʈen lo nodoli ɓali
state.of.affairs: 2SG move.towards village_name, best.thing can enter ABS second street
If you want to go to Ketel/to go to Ketel, you can take the second street, and this is the best choice
Or with a more natural translation, “if you want to go to Ketel, I suggest you take the second street”
Deontic participant-external modality
Obligations are handled through the composite verb tafra kola (rule need/want), which uses the verb for person-internal needs and wants and changes its meaning to “need by virtue of the rules”
fu tafra kola maʈen lo nodoli ɓali
2SG rule need enter ABS second street
You must take the second street (according to the rules/laws)
There are several expressions used to convey the degree of the obligation’s forcefulness, the most used ones are the ideophonic adverbs: kokodok, which carries a vetative interpretation, e.g. kokodok maʈen (you absolutely musn’t enter), zeɦezen a really strong positive obligation verging on being an explicit order, zeɦezen maʈen (you must absolutely enter), makadak, tedeken etc. which are instead used to lenite the forcefulness and brusqueness of the expression.
Permissions are expressed using two different verbs: ɖami and ʟoʃa, the first expressing that something is permitted/not forbidden by rules/laws, while the second is used in situations where there are rules/laws that forbid the thing but in the situation at hand they don’t apply:
fu ɖami ukal maʈen lo ketenaki rane
you allowed see enter ABS imperial square
You can visit the imperial square (everyone can do it)
fu ʟoʃa ukal maʈen lo ketenaki ʈaloʃa
you allowed see enter ABS imperial palace
You can visit the imperial palace (you have authorization that others may lack)
Deontic necessity (should, ought to) is expressed in a similar way to suggestions of participant-external goal oriented modality, using maɻamakon at the beginning of the sentence
maɻamakon feledd mre lo ⱱua na fu
best.thing brush hit/put.in.contact ABS teeth POSS 2SG
You should brush your teeth
Epistemic modality
Kèilem epistemic modality is intertwined with the evidentiality system, its expression is realized by the serialization of an epistemic auxiliary to the main verb of the sentence, the most common ones are:
There are some ideophonic adverbs that can be used to qualify the degree of confidence, like matmat (certainly, almost certainly), paccinpaccin (probably), cikantikan (perhaps)

I’d like to begin this analysis, comparison, and narrative speculation with a few words that seem unrelated at first but BELIEVE ME will be important later in this post…
I FUCKING TOLD YOU SURTALOGI WAS RELATED TO THE SINNER AND Y’ALL DIDN’T BELIEVE ME LETS FUCKING GOOOO EVEN THOUGH I WAS ONLY HALF RIGHT IM STILL GOING TO FUCKING GLOAT ABOUT THIS!!!!!! (for context just go check the first time I say Sutr on my account)
Ok with my ego trip over, let me describe the aims of this theory. (From this point forward, consider all egotripping and narcissism as humor because that is what it is.)
  1. THE IDENTITY OF THE SIBLINGS.
The siblings that traveled the stars, Aether and Lumine. We know em, we love em, or atleast we think we do.
The actual origins of the twins are a mystery to us, and their true role within the plot remains unclear. I, however, believe I found the answer to it all. The truth that shakes the very foundation of the story, the characters, the hierarchy of Teyvat, and people’s shitty Primordial One = evil genocidal colonizing dictator headcanons.
I believe, The Traveler and maybe the Abyss Twin… are none of than The Master of the 4 Shades, the Sovereign of Sovereigns, the God-King in the sky, The one who also goes by the name of Phanes… THE PRIMORDIAL ONE, THE PROGENITOR GOD HAILING FROM BEYOND THE STARS.
Now to most of you, I’ve lost it. I’ve actually gone insane, but once I’m finished with this section of the post I’m convinced this will at least become a major competing theory and I will convert many of you.
So, first off. How? How in Istaroth’s name did I even get to this conclusion? Truth is I don’t remember, except that the pieces just seemed to click together to me one day in school.
So what are these pieces you may ask?
First off the Traveler can be both male or female, with both exhibiting traits of the other (Aether having long hair while Lumine having shorter hair for example). This is a representation of the androgynous nature of Phanes as mentioned in Before Sun and Moon. Their names, Aether and Lumine, also both have relations to light. The concept of Aether as a some sort of material or tangible thing was used to explain the propagation of light, his Chinese and Japanese names, Kong and Sora respectively, mean sky and light technically comes from the sky or is atleast propagated BY it. Lumine is an obsolete verb to illuminate. Her Chinese name, Ying, means glow and her Japanese name, Hotaru, means firefly and guess what fireflies do? They produce LIGHT. (translations for the Chinese and Japanese names are from the Genshin wiki.) Their strange original power also seems to be connected to light in some way. The twins also share The Primordial One’s love for Humanity, but strangely only the Traveler seems to share this empathy to the gods and curiously enough the Dragons. More on that later.
You may saying, “ok you just proved something we already know, how does it prove they are related to Phanes?”. Well that’s the thing, the name Phanes is the name of the Greek god of… get this… LIGHT!!!!
But that’s just superficial compared to this next part. We all know the gods of Teyvat have named derived from the Ars Goetia and the demons in it. Well this even applies to the Shining Shades themselves as Istaroth is derived from Astaroth and The Sustainer’s name, which while not officially said is in the game files and idk if this counts as a leak or not given it’s literally in the game last time I checked, is Asmoday which comes from Asmodeus. So following this trend of demonic gods logically the Sovereign of Sovereigns themself would follow this trend, with the only name fitting their stature being the name of the ruler of Hell. Lucifer, which… funnily enough means… ‘Light-bringer’. Now to make a tangent that will quickly loop back around to the main topic, you also probably know Paimon is in the Ars Goetia, and that they are one of the most loyal demons. Loyal to who? Lucifer. Who is Paimon most loyal to in the game? The Traveler… Isn’t that funny?
Oh and now for the delusional rambling part. Ok so you know how in the one world quest with Liloupar, the aforementioned Jinn implied we resemble King Deshret? Well King Deshret is describe as a “Son of the Sky”, which seems like just a cool moniker until you combine it with the above and the implications of our resemblance to the Lord of the Blazing Sun. Yeah I’m saying King Deshret is our child. This also means that if Deshret liked a certain other girl in his friend group instead of Nabu Malikata then Nahida would have been our granddaughter or something like that.
Now, this is all fine and good but I can hear you mumbling to yourself. “B-But Isn’t the Primordial One in Celestia??? Aren’t they the big bad because everyone has been telling us they’re bad from just one point of view???”. The answer is elementary my dear reader, The Primordial One is not the one in charge currently.
  1. THE TRUE ORDER OF TEYVAT.
First let me answer the Hydro Dragon shaped elephant in the room, just because Neuvillette says the Primordial One is sitting upon the throne in the sky does NOT mean he is correct. Neuvillette has a very good chance of being DEAD WRONG given that he has no way to just go up and check himself and having to rely on hearsay from his fellow Dragons to know what’s-what, and with what I’m about to say.
What am I about to say? I’m saying Phanes was overthrown and all of Teyvat is being LIED to.
Before Sun and Moon HEAVILY implies that The Primordial One did not win the war despite the author saying otherwise, else they would have assisted in bringing Enkanomiya back up to the surface instead of for some reason banning them from returning to the surface.
Like seriously this makes no sense and is out of character for the Primordial One given we know he loved humanity. He fought the Sovereigns so humanity could live on Teyvat.
So what happened?I believe Phanes was lied to and betrayed. By who? The Second Who Came and noneother than The Sustainer herself. I can already hear you questioning, “B-But you said Phanes lost the war??? How could the SWC have come to power through lies and betrayal instead?”. Dear reader, I never said WHICH WAR. We’re getting ahead of ourselves with that part though so let’s focus on this.
After the War of the Second Who Came, Phanes showed mercy to them. Why do I think this? Well they have shown mercy to the Dragons who they could have completely wiped out if they wanted, and despite the fact the Dragons likely would not have shared the same sentiment to them. So it’s not out of character for them to show mercy. The SWC took this opportunity to play a different game to seize the throne of Celestia which they very much desired. Despite winning Phanes was wounded after the war, this much is apparent.
– QUICK TANGENT BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW HOW TO COMFORTABLY INTRODUCE THIS: It’s possible that Phanes could have even been split between Aether and Lumine during this moment, and I say they split as Lucifer, at least by the Greek name Phosphorus, was also used to refer to Venus. However the Greeks thought Venus to be two very different celestial bodies. The Morning Star and The Evening Star, Phosphorus and Hephestus, Lucifer and Vesper. Two, yet one. This is a common theme in Genshin. The Raiden Shogun puppet and Ei, Rukkhadevata and Nahida, Furina and Focalors. You get the point. I will also cover an alternative theory in section 3 though so watch out for that. Anway back to our regularly scheduled yap session.
–So the SWC came up with a way that supposedly still allows for Lucifer’s will to be projected upon Teyvat… The Heavenly Principles.
Their name is far too artificial for it to just be another name for the Primordial One. The HP would essentially be an automated way to govern the lands of Teyvat while Phanes is in a injured state. Essentially guiding the fate of Teyvat. This should begin to sound atleast vaguely familiar to any of you who have played the Petrichor WQ, and that is the point. I believe the HP to be extremely similar to Phobos in function and purpose. Except that it was never in the control of Phanes, It was all in the control of the SWC. Who eventually persuaded the Shade of Space, Asmoday to their side. Phanes however, is not an idiot, they knew of some sort of treachery. The great Nail thrown upon Sal Vindagnyr proved as much. The SWC would soon cast them aside in order to take all power for themselves.
Thus a scheme was concocted, and once again we look to Remuria.
Yes, That is what I’m implying. Phanes sought the assistance of the Dragon King Nibelung for thwart the SWC and the HP.
“But don’t they hate each other?” You ask, but yet do we really know this to be true? Sure they fought but once enemies can easily become allies if the situation requires them to be, and there is a precedent for alliances between God-Kings and Dragons. As you can guess… Remuria.
As I said The HP is similar to Phobos, Phanes is obviously Remus and you probably have already guessed Nibelung is the equivalent to Scylla. To continue the Scylla/Nibelung connections, in a sense Scylla is a lesser version of Nibelung.
Scylla is a Vishap, Nibelung is a Dragon.
Scylla is a prince, while Nibelung is a king.
Istaroth would be Cassiodor and Asmoday would be Boethius. The only outlier is the SWC as their closest counterpart is Sybilla but IIRC they didn’t want to hurt the people of Remuria, but I suppose it makes sense it wouldn’t be 100% accurate.
With this we can presume that Phanes had a similar plan to Remus, and that it ended in similar way but most notably NOT with the death of Phanes. Rather Phanes was defeated and overthrown, This is also a point where Phanes could have been “split” between Aether and Lumine and could also be the “true” version of the intro cutscene with the one we saw possibly being a altered memory, likely through means other than Irminsul though. The actual war itself would be rewritten in Irminsul saying that Nibelung had attacked Teyvat and was seeking to destroy Celestia. This would explain why the Dragons remember it as the “Great War of Vengeance”.
So thus Phanes is gone and now the SWC and Asmoday lay on top of the throne of Teyvat, however the HP requires someone to… sustain it. Thus Asmoday became the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles and either through simple passing of time or more Irminsul fuckery, the Heaveny Principles and Phanes became almost synonymous in order to further cover the truth of their sin. Istaroth would flee Celestia and begin assisting the people of Enkanomiya. The Shades of Life and Death would likely be forced into submitting to the new authority.
Now about the Third Descender, I think they got fucking cooked by the SWC. Given the SWC seem to be implied to be atleast somewhat comparable in strength to Phanes, combined with the fact they aren’t injured like Phanes was they likely could beat the crap out of the Third Descender. However they did not show the mercy Phanes showed to the SWC, that was their predecessor’s greatest mistake. The Third Descender was hacked to bits and it’s remains used to make the Gnosis. Blah blah Archon War blah blah Cataclysm you know the rest I’ll summarize it in the final part anyway.
Anyway time for some Abyssal YAP
  1. ABYSSAL YAP SESSION.
So first off who the FUCK is the Vinster King, well according to Wiktionary Vinster means “Dark” so we already know bro is on that Abyssal grind set.
Now there is two possibilities. One that’s neat, has interesting implications given it’s connection to one of the 5 Sinners which also makes most likely, and overall fits with theming of the other Sinners.
The other is fucking King Irmin because of course it is.
Ok first of all I don’t think it’s King Irmin because we do NOT need ANOTHER fucking name for this guy.
Now who do I think it is? I believe the identity of the Vinster King to be SurtSurt, the Norse Fire Giant who was said to destroy the world at Ragnarök. How does he destroy the world? With “Surt’s Fire”, also known as… Surtalogi. Surtr’s sword being imbued with it. Also curiously, the book Legend of the Shattered Halberd mentions Lævateinn, a weapon capable of destroying the world. Lævateinn is ALSO a Norse sword and one source says it could be the SAME sword Surtr uses thus making it imbued with ‘Surtalogi’. Lævateinn is also said to be the only weapon capable of killing a mythical bird known as “Víðópnir”, which is extremely similar to another bird called, get this, Vedrfolnir. Also though unlikely to actually related but still funny, Lævateinn is a weapon used by the character Flandre Scarlet in the Touhou Project series of bullet hell games. It is commonly depicted as being made of… get this… FIRE.
Anyway, Surtalogi is one of the Sinners of Khaenri’ah, those Sinners now seek to “betray the world” according to Dainsleif (who is also named after sword btw.) and thus destroy it. Given the other Sinners all seem to have their own focuses and Surtalogi’s known interests it is likely that he specializes in combat meaning in the war against Celestia he will be on the frontlines. Making him the metaphorical sword Surtr will use to destroy the world.–
TANGENT TIME IS BACK: Ok I thought of this while writing this but what if the curse Arlecchino has, which is fire based, is a literal Surt’s Fire in Genshin. It has the connections to Khaenri’ah and thus close proximity to the Abyss. Hell Surtalogi could actually POSSESS the same curse Arlecchino has.
–But none of this is actually answering the right question, it’s throwing names and motives around without knowing who we are applying this to. I believe the Vinster King to effectively be the will of the Abyss, if not the Abyss itself. After all the Abyss has to be sentient in some form in order to tempt the Sinners. A good comparison would be like The Ring from Lord of the Rings, it’s pseudo-sentient and tempts others with it’s power. (I’ve only watched the first movie so if I’m 100% wrong that’s why, I just hope you got the point I was trying to make.)
Ok now with that possible bombshell, I’ll explain the 2nd possibility for the Abyss Sibling. It’s possible that the Abyss Sibling could actually be a clone of the Traveler and thus Phanes. They possess the same love for humanity but lack such love for the gods and we don’t know their opinions on the Dragons. It also explains why they are connected to Irminsul and we aren’t. That’s all I have on this subject though
  1. Wrapping it all up.
Long ago, when the doves held branches, The Primordial One, Lu did battle with Nibelung and the 7 Dragon Sovereigns of ancient Teyvat. 40 years passed and he vanquished the Dragons but notably did not annilhate them, he respected their strength, pride, and honor. In return the Dragon King, Nibelung, made that respect mutual with his adversary.
In order to shape the world anew for the creation of mankind, Phanes split himself into 4 Shades, all embodying different concepts. These were the first lesser gods.
The Shade of Life.
The Shade of Death.
The Shade of Time, Istaroth.
The Shade of Space, Asmoday.
The Primordial One, Lucifer, was the embodiment of Logic and Reason.
With these powers and ideals, they carved the old world into a new one, and populated it with humanity. Phanes cherished humanity above all else so when another Descender from beyond the firmament of Teyvat invaded, they fought with all their might and eventually won this war despite suffering heavy injuries. It is possible that Phanes split during this conflict, but just because they split does not mean they are not one. They are two, but one.
Like the Sovereigns before the Second Who Came, Phanes showed mercy and offered to the SWC a position in his divine authority. The SWC accepted, not with humility but with malice as they continued to plot for the divine throne. Taking advantage of The Primordial One’s injured state they created a scheme through creating a system known as the Heavenly Principles, it was meant to be automated assistance for Phanes’ rulership. In reality it operated under the SWC’s will. Often being erratic, swift, and violent in it’s judgement.
The kingdom of Sal Vindagnyr saw this fate first hand.
Realizing the treachery in their midst, Phanes began to plan for a way to overturn the Heavenly Principles and thus the SWC. For this they reached out to his former enemy, Nibelung, for an alliance of convenience against this common threat. Nibelung was necessary as in their weakened state, Phanes even with the power of the 4 other Shades could not beat the SWC. He told the Shades of the plot so they wouldn’t interfere. Little did they know this is what led the plan to ruin as one of his Shades, Asmoday, had been tempted by the SWC.
When the day of the plan came, Phanes was stopped by theirown creation. Asmoday defeated her lord and effectively sealed them, likely in some far off corner of the planet that’s deep underground…
Nibelung battled the SWC, eventually falling in combat. Seeing her king imprisoned and their last hope vanquished, Istaroth fled Celestia and went into hiding. Helping the land of Enkanomiya survive after it had been swallowed by sea. The remaining Shades were forced into subservience for the new order. The Heavenly Principles still needed something to maintain it, thus Asmoday became the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles. The memory of the event was also altered with the usage of the Irminsul deep below the earth. The Heavenly Principles and the God-King in Celestia wrongly became one and the Dragons would only know the war as the Great War of Vengeance against the “Usurper-King”.
Yet despite their absolute control seemingly being enforced, the SWC’s grip upon the world began to erode. The arrival of a Third Descender opened up opportunities, the Third was slaughtered and their remains butchered at the request of the Heavenly Principles. Creating the 7 Elemental Gnosis. Then the lesser gods, fragments of The Primordial One’s strength, were forced to fight.
Among them was Amun, King Deshret. He was unique among the other gods as he was the closest thing Phanes had to a son, he was cast out of the Island in the sky for this fact. Seeking revenge he allied with a former Seelie and the Lord of the Woods, and the rest is history.
Once the number of gods was culled to just 7, they were granted the Elemental Authorities and the Gnosis. The Archons were told the Gnosis were the Authorities but in reality they were nothing but strings to keep them forever at the SWC’s command. What they could not predict was the ancient enemy of all things relating to Celestia.
Surtr, the Vinster King. Whether or not he is the Abyss itself or just it’s “will” does not matter. What matters is that all of his actions are in the name of the destruction of Teyvat. He tempted the Lord of the Blazing Sun with Forbidden Knowledge, legging to the corruption of Irminsul. He tempted Hroptatyr, Vedrfolnir, Rerir, Rhinedottir, and the one who would become Surtalogi, Surtr’s fire that will burn the world Celestia had made. He even tempted King Irmin himself, leading Khaenri’ah’s destruction. It is also possible they had found Phanes in stasis and attempted to replicate them, creating a imperfect vessel bound to the shackles the Irminsul creates to this world.
Once the Abyssal hordes began to wreak havoc upon Teyvat, Khaenri’ah was annilhated at the behest of the SWC and the Heavenly Principles. During this Cataclyscm however, one of the puppet gods realized the truth of the Gnosis, and possibly the truth of Celestia. They chose to turn their blade against the island in the sky, rebelling against the “divine”.
And now, here we are 500 years later. The ex God-King wakes upon a sandy shore, wrongly believing they were separated by a sibling they had. They made a fishing rod out of nearby materials, living off the nearby land to survive, learning to cook with the familiar yet foreign ingredients. One day however they fished up but one of the thousands of winds that make up the Shade of Time. Carrying the same loyalty held by the god of Time, ‘Paimon’ taught the last remnant of Phanes and their power the language of the land and convinced them to set off on a journey to travel the world.
Yet wouldn’t this be no problem for the true Usurpers? Phanes had lost the vast majority of their divine power, not even a Nail would be necessary to strike them down. Yet in truth, it couldn’t be worse. The Heavenly Principles are strangely inactive, The Second Who Came have grown docile.
Worst of all, the Sustainer is slowly dying as a result of their betrayal. She can only hope when the creator finally comes that they’ll be as merciful as ever and revitalize her with their power.
The burning world created by the Second Who Came will cease, and you will ascend back to your rightful throne above.
The dark king of the depths shall be striked down by your guiding light.
This tale is known as Yuánshén in Chinese, means “Original God”. This is translated to “Genshin” into Japanese and is used for most versions of it’s title.
You are the Genshin, You are the Original God…
…and it is up to you to make an Impact.
Special thanks to:
u/Mtebalanazy, for creating the original post that came up with the Remuria = Celestia connection. The same posting inspiring me to create this.
u/deathbaloney, for informing me of many pieces of evidence that allowed me to craft this theory. Specifically the Venus part. They also were major in inspiring me to actually make this post.
Dawit. For being the last remaining Genshin theory channel that I could trust. While Ashikai was busy yapping about all humans in Teyvat being dragons, you stood strong. While Chill with Aster was… Ok honestly idk what happened that made me stop, you still had FAITH in Phanes. And while Wei was pushing the Zhongli Descender theory for God knows what reason, you were capable of comprehending English. He also inspired the whole “The progenitor god hailing beyond the stars” bit from the beginning.
And finally, to you. For taking God knows how much time of your day reading this Yapfest that will probably end up only being half right because I’ve been keeping up that streak since fucking Sumeru.

2024.06.08 05:20 RockSowe Battlefield 1 Meets Magicka 2, Team Objective based FPS

The Pitch

WW1 style first person shooter but the technology causing trench warfare isn't maxim guns and artilery but magic missle and fireballs. Inspired by the aesthetics of Monstergarden's Rust & Trenches, the high energy frenetic infantry gameplay of battlefield 1, and the spell-craftign of Magicka 2. Utilize six basic spell elements and a mix of four different spell foci to create over 700 spell variations.
Lets go over how the magic works first!

Focus on Foci

There are four base foci that a mage can use. these can be amplified and specific stats changes with inlay materials and different shape compositions. here are the basic descriptors:
Before deploying to a match you choose two of the above foci to bring with you, this determines what your playstile is and allows for interesting customization and specialization. it also ensures that many playstiles can be supported. wanna be a sniper? stave is first pick but then you need to choose, support sniper with a disk, sniper and shotgun with a gauntlet, or lock out an element but dominate medium and long range with a wand? Each spell element is assigned to each trigger and bumper, hence why if you can ads you're locked out of an element.

Setting Spells

six base elements combined in a sequence of three generate a spell. the same element repeated as the first and second of a spell shoots out a faster (and easier to do) cantrip with less effect. each of the elements functions as a verb, adjective, and noun when spell crafting creating a sentences that determines spell effect based on the positioning in that sentence of each element. this sounds a lot more complicated than it is.
Lets say you want to cast a spell using Heat and Cold. The first element in the spell would be the noun, so heat=fire. second element would be the adjective cold=longer duration at cost of immediate power. last element would be verb so heat = burst. shot through a wand would send out a projectile that on impact becomes a long lasting burst of less damaging fire.
Elements:
Before joining a match you choose four of the elements to be part of your load out. wands and staves can only use three of the four element you select. this ensures that while every wizard can do a lot and be flexible, no wizard can do everything!(and damage focused wizards who only wanna shoot at the enemy have less stuff to worry about by having fewer spells). a team without Static wizards has no cover, a team without Heat wizards has no fire!
With each element being bound to a bumper or trigger this ensures that the player can quickly (and without affecting their aim) create and launch spells. spell launches once the last element is added.

Ordinary Ordinance

Ordinance should be less grenades and more spell components. a simple vial of water that creates a pond on impact would be very useful for boosting plantgrowth, conducting electricity, freasing as a hazard, boiling into steam cloud. other ordinance along this same level should be used. oil is another good one.

Terraforming Terrain

as you can see, all of the above cantrips can affect terrain somehow. I feel that this should be core to the experience as the player should be dropped an relatively flat map and end up in a map full of trneches and dugouts and raised earthen walls. would be fun to see the battle progress as wizards use their magic to shape the terrian in advantageous ways for themselves and hazardous ways for the enemy usigno only their magic!

Getting Goals

I have the vision of htisb being a capturepoint king of the hill, battlefield 1 style game, but if you have better ideas then I recommend you let me know!

Answerign Aesthetics

To me this game would be best served with a "realistic proportions" style. Styalizations a la Dishonored are fine, but keeping things a bit more "gritty" would add to the general feeling of trying to cast spells while under fire yk?
Thanks for reading, I'm mostly looking for mechanical feedback rn. I have some example spells and combinations I can share if anyone is interested!

2024.06.07 12:52 domysee It took me 6 months to find the final name for my project

It took me 6 months to find the final name for my project
This is mostly a story to make you feel good about yourself if you're in the same boat, and also having a hard time naming your product. At the end I did figure it out, and used ChatGPT for brainstorming, which worked surprisingly well once I got the prompt right. If you want to jump ahead to that part, go to the headline Learning resources.
First I'll start with a bit of backstory. The product is a combination of rss feed reader, newsletter reader, and read-it-later app. I've been thinking about that space for a long time (>5 years), especially about how to help people focus on the best content. There's also a previous version of the product called ReadingDragon, but with the new one I want the name to not emphasize reading, because the product should also support podcasts and videos. That's why a new name was necessary.
I liked the logo though. At first it was just the dragon, until a friend put the glasses on it.
https://preview.redd.it/dwm0x2f3r45d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=e43bdbd2dacb77fcca64442c527ddb0aeb49a8ef
First name
Anyway, I was never good at naming products, and ReadingDragon probably isn't particularly good either. My fondness of it grew over time as I've been working on it.
My first attempts all used the same strategy. Brainstorm relevant words for the product and combine them, either to create a new word or just put them together. That was the only strategy I knew back then. Now I have a list of naming strategies, but more on that later.
The first name I came up with was conus. It was a combination of content and something else, I don't even remember what it was.
I never loved it, but didn't hate it either. Until I found out that "conus" is an English word in itself, where the meaning has nothing to do with the product at all. 🤦
From that point on it was clear that I need a new name.
Second name
Pretty much on the same day I started brainstorming for new names, again using the same strategy. I brainstormed nouns, verbs, adjectives, that have something to do with the product or its larger vision.
To be frank, it was a drag. There were so many words that were technically related to the product, but didn't feel right at all. I wanted a smooth sounding name, but all I could think of were words with hard pronunciations. Words like control, filter, sort, focus, information.
The prospective names that resulted in were for example ContentControl, QualityLens, InfoStream. They are terrible.
A bit later I attempted to combine words with animals. The smart, curious ones. You know, because the product is supposed to make you smarter. I thought of raven, dolphin, octopus, eagle, owl, and a couple more. This resulted in KnowledgeKraken, SortingRaven, EagleFocus. A little bit better, but still not good.
I'm actually quite embarrassed to write about these names. But it is supposed to make you feel better, so I guess I had to.
No idea why but at some point I thought about glass-related things. Periscope, Kaleidoscope, and Looking glass. Domains for periscope and kaleidoscope were obviously already taken. And so I chose looking glass. I still own the domain looking-glass.app.
It wasn't the name I wanted, but it was the best one I got at the time. And I was fed up with naming that I just wanted to choose something that was at least a little better than conus. I chose it with the thought that it's always possible to rebrand.
Learning resources
Naming wasn't done for me, and besides myself not being happy with it, everyone I told about the product told me that the name is bad. Talk about beating a dead horse. It still stung a little every time though. I guess a part of me was still hoping that the name might work out.
Whenever I came across an article that talked about naming products, I read it. Most of them were useless, but the Startup Naming Handbook (https://thecreativemarketer.net/#startup-naming-handbook) was very helpful. It lists 16 common name types, with pros, cons, and examples. When before I was thinking of only one type of name, now I had a list of 16. Getting an overview like that is super valuable.
Final name
With the list of name types I had a framework to talk about naming, and could choose which type of name I wanted. At the same time it made it easier to work with ChatGPT to do creative brainstorming.
The final step was short and sweet. I wrote a prompt and the first result is the name I chose.
https://preview.redd.it/n8875gxwq45d1.png?width=815&format=png&auto=webp&s=cad8b4318d6634311cd460b7dd57d5986f917a65
These suggestions were generally miles ahead of anything I had before, but when I read "Lighthouse" I knew that was it. Luckily I found a domain that's quite good, and not too obscure, lighthouseapp.io.
That's the end of my 6 month story of naming my product. I hope it made you feel better and that my final steps could give you some inspirations of what you can try if you're currently in the same situation. And most of all I hope that next time I attempt product naming it doesn't take me 6 months, but maybe only 2.

2024.06.06 13:37 saintmagician Naming of the Radiant orders and surges

I find it very interesting that some of the Radiant orders are named after one of their two surges.
Lightweavers
“Shallan, we don’t have an army yet,” Dalinar said. “Lightweave one up for us, and keep these soldiers busy."
Lightweavers are the order, but 'Lightweave' is also the verb for using the surge of illumination, something that Truthwatchers can also do:
Then again, the way that Lightweaving worked for Truthwatchers seemed different—even if one disregarded whatever Renarin was. So maybe?
(Even more generally, 'Lightweaving' just means making illusions. Shallan Lightweaves using the surge of illumination, but Hoid can also Lightweave using Yolish Lightweaving.)
So the order of Lightweavers got named after Lightweaving (the power), even though Truthwatchers also have this power...
Elsecallers
Similarly, Elsecallers are the order, but 'Elsecall' seems to be the verb for using the surge of transportation.
Wit strolled up beside her. “You realize we’re at least a week away from civilization. Did you need to Elsecall this far out in the middle of nowhere?”
The term 'Elsecall' also appears in some WoBs (e.g. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/176/#e8448 )
Edgedancers
“Nah,” Lift said. “You need them all. They’re all good at the Edgedancing part."
You might think this is just Lift being childish.. but surprisingly, the author has also used the term and it's clear that it refers specifically to adhesion: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/369-skyward-san-francisco-signing/#e11613
Q: I had a question about [steel] Ferrings. So, I saw that you had mentioned in a previous talk that you could only move so fast with air resistance, like eventually you'd start burning up. If you were to become an Edgedancer as well? A: If you can combine those two powers, Edgedancing and [steel] Ferring, then you are able to do things that would circumvent that restriction. Yes, indeed.
Windrunners and Bondsmiths
These appear only once in the books:
“That’s true,” Leyten said. “But we have to take turns … you know.” He meant using the Honorblade to practice Windrunning.
And:
His [Dalinar's] job, he was increasingly certain, involved his Bondsmithing, the Oathpact, and the Heralds.
I'm going to assume that 'windrunning' refers just to gravitation and 'bondsmithing' refers just to adhesion... but it's pretty ambigious.
The remaining orders & surges
The remaining 5 surges are transformation, cohesion, progression, division and tension. Transformation is 'soulcasting', cohesion is 'stoneshaping' (from RoW Ars Aracanum), progression might just be 'healing'. Division and tension are yet unknown.
The remaining 5 orders are Willshapers, Stonewards, Skybreakers, Dustbringers and Truthwatchers. I think Willshapers and Stonewards are both names inspired by 'stoneshaping'. The name Skybreaker is pretty self explanatory. The connection between 'Dustbringer' and division, the surge of destruction and decay, is also pretty obvious.
Truthwatchers is really the odd duck. Literally every other order has a name which references powers and not ideals (e.g. the word 'Windrunner' refers to the powers of flying and not the ideal of protection). The name 'Truthwatcher' has nothing to do with their powers of healing and illusion making... it is clearly a reference to the ideal of truth seeking.

I’m pretty new to this community, so I don’t know if this has already been answered, but I could totally see the ACT saying that what is the correct answer is too wordy. How do I know when it’s too wordy or not?

2024.06.03 10:44 adulting4kids Modern Poetry Prompts

Prose Prompts Inspired by Modern Poetry Forms (2014-2024):

  1. Erasure Poem (Inspired by Robin Coste Lewis): Find a historical document, news article, or advertisement that resonates with you. Following the spirit of erasure poetry, redact portions of the text, leaving behind fragments that create a new narrative or reveal hidden messages. (Source: Robin Coste Lewis, "Voyage of the Sable Venus")
  2. Blackout Poem (Inspired by Austan Goh): Take a page of text from a newspaper, magazine, or book and blackout (mark out) sections with a black marker. The remaining words should create a new poem with a surprising or thought-provoking message. (Source: Austan Goh, "redacted")
  3. Catalog Poem (Inspired by Claudia Rankine, "Citizen: An American Lyric") Create a list or catalog of everyday objects, observations, or experiences related to a specific theme (race, gender, technology). Use vivid details and language to make the seemingly mundane come alive with new meaning.
  4. Cinquain (Inspired by Naomi Shihab Nye): Write a five-line poem following the cinquain structure. Line 1: One-word subject (noun). Line 2: Two words describing the subject (adjectives). Line 3: Three words expressing action related to the subject (verbs). Line 4: Four words expressing a feeling about the subject (a phrase). Line 5: One-word synonym for the subject (noun). (Source: Naomi Shihab Nye, "Famous")
  5. ** Prose Fragment inspired by Prose Poetry (Example: Ocean Vuong, "On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous")** Write a short, lyrical piece of prose that captures a fleeting moment, memory, or image. Focus on sensory details, emotional intensity, and fragmented sentences to create a poetic effect.
  6. Found Poem (Inspired by Layli Long Soldier): Gather snippets of text from overheard conversations, street signs, overheard music lyrics, etc. Arrange these fragments into a new poem that explores the beauty and chaos of everyday language.
  7. Hybrid Form (Inspired by Terrance Hayes): Combine elements of two different genres (prose and script, for example) to tell a story or explore a theme. Experiment with formatting, dialogue, and narrative structure to create a unique voice. (Source: Terrance Hayes, "Lightness: The Tree, the Ditch, and the Rail")
  8. Concrete Poem (Inspired by Bob Grumman): Arrange words and letters on the page in a way that visually represents the subject of your poem. Consider using different fonts, spacing, and shapes to create a poem that is both visual and textual. (Source: Bob Grumman, "Allen Ginsberg")
  9. Collaborative Prose (Inspired by Claudia Rankine & Danez Smith, "The New American Verse") Write a collaborative prose piece with a partner or group. Take turns adding sentences or paragraphs, building upon each other's ideas and creating a unified piece through the collective voice.
  10. Flash Fiction Inspired by Image Poetry (Example: Ilya Kaminsky, "Deaf Republic") Find a photograph or painting that evokes strong emotions in you. Use this image as a springboard to write a short work of flash fiction that captures the essence of the image and its potential story.

2024.06.03 06:30 Revolutionforevery1 Paolia: My native american isolate conlang

¡Tequantzélo! This post is so that I can share & document my progress on Paolia, one of my active conlangs & part of my alternate history worldbuilding project. I wanna point out that this conlang is most likely not naturalistic, as I lack proper knowledge for such a task, but I've tried to design it as naturalistic as I can with the rudimentary knowledge I have about linguistics. I've taken inspiration from some natural languages such as Nahuatl, though only in appearance as I know very little about it. Last thing to note is that the version of the conlang I'll be presenting here is the modern day way the language sounds, as it doesn't vary that much from its prehispanic version.
Presentation & History
Paolia is a language spoken in a fictional group of islands off the western coast of Mexico; at roughly the same altitude as the state of Jalisco. It is the only known group of the ecaian language family & it has no derivations as the people do not live in different spots, so the language has remained relatively unified. It was relatively isolated during the majority of its existence since roughly the start of the mesoamerican Classical Period ~200-300 a.C. During the Postclassical Period they had a small comercial relationship with the mexicans (aztecs), using the word 'nahoa' referring to anyone from the mainland.
At around the latter part of the XV century (or the beginning of the XVI century depending on who you ask) the ladewans discovered the ecaian Camutan archipelago. In this timeline, the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula ended about one century earlier thanks to the ladewans, the New Sinusian Empire (ladewans) became almost as rich as Spain & Portugal were & also took part in the discovery of the New World, having a good relationship with their mainland neighbours, they settled the city of Nõu Raliji in what are now the mexican states of Jalisco & Nayarit (Al Raliji later gave up on Nõu Raliji & it now belongs to Mexico, serving as a sudonation for modern day ethnic ecaians & ladewans), some years later in around 1488 the island of Camutan was discovered.
Early notes in the Ladĩ language about the discovery of the Camutan archipelago.
Phonology
Paolia's phonology has a small consonant inventory & a 4 vowel system.
https://preview.redd.it/p1911n71ea4d1.png?width=1082&format=png&auto=webp&s=23a2ec69d6184628adb8010261eff78bce3ea03a
* ʔ is represented by a grave accent above the vowels, sometimes it can be pronounced both before & after the vowel but it's mostly after the vowel. (I.e <èca> is pronounced /ʔeʔ.'ka/ & <sonàa> is pronounced /so.'na.ʔa/.)
https://preview.redd.it/c22ufx6bea4d1.png?width=390&format=png&auto=webp&s=034b93610e99bbd5b8b2b69d14a77ec7d4b4ebf5
Diphthongs:
* <u> only appears in writing in <qu> sequences as /kʷ/ & is only pronounced when the sequence is separated by morphological rules, or in standalone words that either didn't evolve out of the use of like <tuma> & <camuta> or loanwords.
** /ə/ only appears at <e> when it's the last vowel of the word like in <poque> which is pronounced /'po.kʷə/, this can be negated by writing <é> like in <> /pe/ or in <eng> sequences /əŋ/.
*** /ɔ̃/ only appears in <ong> sequences /ɔ̃ŋ/.
Orthography
Paolia's orthography is pretty much fully phonetic, there are just some rules I wanna clear out.
<h> is silent expect when it is the coda like in the pluralizer <nih-> /nih/. It's also used alongside to represent /w/
The grave accent <à è ì ò> marks /ʔ/
The acute accent <á é í ó> marks syllable stress & prevents nucleus <i> & <o> from becoming /j/ & /w/ when a vowel is the coda like in <lianóa> /ɭʲa.'no.a/ or <tecotzía> /te.ko.'t͡si.a/
Double vowel sequences <oo> & <ee> make /oʊː/ & /ɛɪː/
Alphabet
A
C 'Cé'
Ch 'Ché'
E
H 'Aché'
I
L 'Elé'
M 'Emé'
N 'Ené'
Ny 'Enyé'
O
P 'Pé'
Qu
S 'Esé'
T 'Té'
Tz 'Tzé'
U
Syntax
Paolia is an OVS language but it can sometimes be OSV due to its grammatical cases.
The object can never be dropped.
Adjectives go prefixed to the nouns.
Grammar
There are two main noun types, raised & simple nouns:
Raised nouns end in <a> & simple nouns end in any other vowel. They never end in a consonant.
They can receive affixes like codas, pluralization, case markings & can also be prefixed to form compound words.
Raised nouns drop final <a> when prefixed to another noun or when receiving a grammatical mark. Simple words never change.
Classical Paolia used to contain grammatical gender, but it got lost, linguists believe raised words used to be of the feminine gender.
Unconjugated verbs always end in <a> & just like raised nouns, these can drop it to accept suffixes for conjugations. (-iceng is a verb suffix that gerundizes them & converts them to nouns that act like simple nouns, though they can't receive case marking & must rely on the word 'quìe' I.e 'naqui tequohoiceng quìepal', which literally translates to "about the thing of dying")
Verbs can receive prefixes, infixes & suffixes to add extra information
Adjectives in Paolia always end in <tl> these drop it to be prefixed to nouns, when they appear standalone, they receive their own set of infixed case markings differing from noun's markings.
Relative Case
I wanna make a special section about the relative case (not to be confused with the linguistic term), which is a special case marking used for prepositions, kinda like the prepositional case in languages like Russian.
The marking is -apal for raised nouns & -pal for simple nouns & it can accept prepositions like:
about/because = naqui (It can be used to express something similar to the expression 'due to x')
on = naoe
under= quaoe
in = incial
outside = sintzin
ablative = quenti
for = sonti
Examples
The language has no traditional writing system, it got lost around the time the ladewans & spaniards discovered & raided the island, ending in a similar fate to all native mesoamerican groups. The island is a nature reserve today belonging to Mexico where some ecaians still live, but the majority of the ecaian population lives in mainland Mexico, mostly concentrated in Nõu Raliji in the states of Nayarit & Jalisco.
A text about the Camutan.
A part of the ecaian creation myth, included in the former Ecaian Constitution.
Translation of Yoremnokki poem Taabu.
Note that the orthographical rules I wrote earlier in the post don't always apply as they're not universal & may differ from person to person.
A story about how a person felt about moving to Nõu Raliji as a kid. (I somewhat stutter when reading the language, I tried to get the accent as accurate as possible to make it seem as if I wasn't reading it but I just couldn't.)

2024.06.01 21:31 Billy_NoMate List of every time more than 4 words fit a category

To clear up a common misconception that this is something that only happens extremely rarely, here's a list of every time more than 4 words have fit one of the categories and what number puzzle it occurred in. The first 4 words are the answers and every word after that in parenthesis are words that fit that category but were part of another group. Also, category names might not be exactly the same as the ones used.
Edit because some of the comments think I'm actually angry about Connections doing this: Some people think that I compiled this list because I'm anti-overlap when it's actually the opposite case. I actually like the overlap since I think it makes for a more interesting puzzle. I feel like every so often there's an angry comment about more than 4 words fitting a category and acting like this has never happened before so partially out of pettiness and a love of useless stats I decided to make this list to serve as proof that this has been a deliberate part of Connections since the start.

2024.06.01 15:31 SearchMelodic8804 Feedback?

Im 13 and in year 8 and had the homework task of writing a paragraph about how Boxer from animal farm progresses throughout the novella and here it is! I know it’s not good so I would really appreciate feedback. I know it’s really long sorry
Throughout the novella, Orwell depicts Boxer as a selfless and sympathetic worker while simultaneously portraying him as gullible, and exposing the manipulation he suffers due to his naïveté and lack of literacy.
Napoleon, after successfully exiling Snowball, decides that the building of the windmill will in fact go ahead, requiring the animals’ input. In an attempt to inspire the animals, Squealer is then tasked with giving motivational speeches to them, yet it was often the sight of Boxer ‘toiling up the slope inch by inch, his breath coming fast, the tips of his hoofs clawing at the ground and his great sides matted with sweat’ that filled everyone with motivation. The use of listing emphasises the substantial amount of strength and vigour exerted by Boxer while working on the farm. Concurrently, it also creates a vivid image of travail using figurative language, which causes the reader to feel sympathetic for Boxer. The verb [toil] implies prolonged and fatiguing labour, uncovering how much he sacrifices for the farm and revealing Boxer’s altruistic and heroic character. Alternatively, it also connotes exploitation, with employees being forced to work unjust, strenuous hours with little to no return, exposing how his willingness to drudge is leveraged by Napoleon.
Despite enduring all these struggles, he never complains or protests and in fact regularly states ‘[he] will work harder’. Boxer’s frequent repetition of this maxim reveals how devoted he is to the animal’s cause and his unwavering dedication to Napoleon’s regime. It also demonstrates how he is a vital and key part of Animal Farm’s revolt, as he already works more than any other animal on the farm yet still endeavours to give more, shown by him reducing his sleep hours. His constant desire to ‘work harder’ is what has led to him becoming one of the most respected animals on Animal Farm, a quality Napoleon manipulates to promote his ideology towards the other animals. The first person personal pronoun ‘I’ depicts the accountability Boxer feels and through this, we are able to infer that in the face of adversity, he finds faults in himself, rather than in Napoleon and his governance, hinting at his indoctrination; he is convinced that Napoleon, as the leader of Animal Farm, can do no wrong, and any problems on the farm are a result of his own shortcomings, illustrating his naïveté. Alternately, ‘I’ could perhaps elucidate how he sacrifices himself to ameliorate the lives of the other animals on the farm, conveying his self-abnegation.
This is not the only motto Boxer adopts, as after Squealer diminishes Snowball’s accomplishments in the Battle of the Cowshed, Boxer has the chance to think things over, and comes to the conclusion that ‘Napoleon is always right’. The use of the simple sentence betrays Boxer’s innocence, as well as his lack of intelligence, as he is not able to deliberate complex pieces of information. Furthermore, this quote demonstrates that he believes everything told to him by Napoleon, uncovering the degree to which Napoleon reveres and follows the Pigs, indicating how he has been indoctrinated. This is further emphasised by the use of logical fallacy; it is impossible for Napoleon to be right all of the time, implying that this statement is false. From this, we come to acknowledge that Boxer is tricked and manipulated into assuming an argument that, with logic, can be easily dismantled, uncovering how it is lack of literacy that is allowing Napoleon to abuse and terrorise him and the other animals. Boxer is an extremely strong, large horse, as well as the most powerful on the farm, meaning he could easily take down the Pigs with brute strength, but as he isn’t able to realise the corruptness of Napoleon’s regime or speak out against him, he ends up suffering. The adverb ‘always’ implies the fact that there is no room for dissent against Napoleon and emphasises how absolute his power is. It also suggests continued faith and devotion to a leader, and this devotion keeps the animals passive towards Napoleon and his abuse.
Boxer, due to his lack of intelligence, is constantly at the receiving end of this abuse, contrary the fact that ‘Nothing on the farm could’ve been achieved without [him], whose strength seemed equal to that of all the other animals put together’ The use of the declarative sentence asserts Boxer’s significance on the farm, and shows that his strength was essential and critical to the farm’s development. By emphasising Boxer’s brawn through comparison, Orwell, while conveying his notably immense physical strength, prompts you to consider the fact that he is still just a subordinate worker, due to his stupidity. Additionally, the phrase might allude to how Boxer, as arguably the most influential character on Animal Farm, is used by Napoleon to control and manipulate the other animals: by indoctrinating Boxer with his corrupt ideologies, Napoleon is able to sway the others, meaning without Boxer and his influence, Napoleon would not have been able to dominate and command Animal Farm, exhibiting his role as a pawn in enabling Napoleon’s regime. The pronoun ‘nothing’ exaggerates the extent to which the farm requires Napoleon’s input, by suggesting that absolutely nothing could have been achieved without him, indicating his prominence. Contrarily, ‘nothing’ also connotes insignificance, which exposes how despite everything Boxer does for the farm, he is a mere tool utilised by Napoleon to further his agenda.
Orwell has arguably presented Boxer this way to reveal how without the benefit of learning and the ability to express themselves, people are susceptible to being exploited by their ruthless leaders, despite their strength in number. Boxer serves as an allegory for the Russian proletariat, who helped to oust Tsar Nicholas II and establish the Soviet Union, but were eventually betrayed by the Communist government under Stalin. His sympathetic character alludes to how the proletariat were abused by Stalin unjustly, and is a result of Orwell’s intent to prompt pity for the Russian proletariat from the reader. By characterising Boxer as gullible and naïve despite his immense physical power, Orwell uncovers the ease Stalin had in enforcing his power over the numerous proletariat and manipulating them due to their lack of literacy and simultaneously criticises Stalin’s tyrannical rule of the people powering his nation.

2024.06.01 13:25 Informal_Patience821 Refuting the: "Addressing the false claims of Dr. Exion ps 2" Response to second post

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Peace be to you all.
Let's proceed to refute the second part of his "rebuttal," providing a brief yet precise rebuttal that will further expose his ignorance in the Hebrew language, and his knowledge of the Bible as well.
He writes:
The prophecy so closely matches those events that even scecular scholars agree which is the primary reason secular scholars date Daniel to just after these events. Their idea is the book is actually recording history but pretending to present prophecy.
But it doesn’t. Not even close. The chapter is about a prophet/messenger of God who brought a Holy Covenant. His successors fell into dispute over who was the rightful heir to his kingdom. The rightful successors were supposed to be his descendants (his followers), but that turned out not to be the case according to what verse 4 states. This is strikingly similar to how Islamic history played out.
He writes:
I'm not sure where Exion found this translation.
I found it here: biblehub - Pulpit's commentary. Literally a direct copy and paste. Not sure how he missed it.
Regarding the "The prophecy describes a sequence of events" thing he pointed out, I had already revised each verse from part 1 in part 2, and it now makes perfect sense. He should read part 2.
He writes:
A few things here. The verb is עמדים. The same verb is used in verse 3 and again in verse 4. Both cases it's referring to a king rising to power rather than rising against someone/somthing else. That context suggests the same meaning for the kings in verse 2. We also see verse 2 describing a king being against a nation when it says "he shall stir up all against the kingdom of Greece." This is a different verb and preposition.
Yes, I agree. 'Umar was the first king to rise in Persia when he fought the Persians and won. 'Uthman and 'Ali were the second and third kings, and Mu'awiyah was the fourth, the wealthy king. I'm not sure what he thinks he is refuting here because I literally wrote:
"This 'rising' could either be in support of Persia or in opposition to it. Remarkably, this aligns perfectly with the historical narrative of Islam, and here's why:..."
In other words, both interpretations align perfectly with the historical narrative of Islam. I believe he misunderstood that part; regardless, let's move on.
The Hebrew word is גִּבּוֹר which means strong/mighty not righteous
You also missed the part where I said that this would be made clear later in the chapter, specifically here:
Daniel 11:30:
The Holy Covenant was brought by the mighty king, of course. However, he completely missed this point and is portraying the Bible as if it prophesies random historical secular events and secular kings, like a history book, rather than a Holy Book foretelling the era of a prophet and a king, much like King David. He claims that secular scholars date Daniel to just after these events and believe the book is recording history while pretending to present prophecy. What a silly assertion. Don’t you think people would generally reject such false "prophecy" and declare them deviant liars, especially if they depicted events that had recently happened and everyone knew about? Both you and these secular scholars need to rethink your position because it is very unlikely (almost impossible to be true) and rather ridiculous, if I'm being very frank.
The chapter is about a prophet who brought a Holy Covenant from God, which is why it is literally called "Holy."
Definition of "Holy":
holy / ˈhəʊli / adjective
1.dedicated or consecrated to God or a religious purpose; sacred."the Holy Bible" Similar: sacred, consecrated, hallowed, sanctified, venerated, revered. (Source: Google)
The Bible is considered to be the Words of God (or inspired Words of God), and these Words literally call this Covenant "Holy." Meanwhile, you are deviating from this description by portraying an erroneous picture of a bunch of atheist ancient kings fighting each other over various kingdoms.
He writes:
The specific word is וּכְעָמְדוֹ. The וּ is the conjunctive. It's not a vav relative in this case since the verb tense isn't the perfect or imperfect The כְ is a Hebrew proposition added to the verb. The verb is עָמְד and the וֹ is a possesive suffix. The verb form is the infinitive construct. When that verb form is combined with the preposition כְ it indicates a temporal clause which is where the "as soon as" comes from. The possesive suffix indicates the subject of the verb which is where the "he" comes from. Combined with the verb we get as soon as he has risen. Exion's translation ignores the preposition and possesive suffix on the verb.
I will respond to each claim by giving it a short name and my rebuttal next to it:
Regarding: Conjunctive וּ: It is agreed that the וּ functions as a conjunctive "and" or "but," connecting phrases. This conjunction alone does not necessarily indicate a temporal clause.
Not a Vav Relative: Correct, this is not a vav relative case.
Preposition כְ: The preposition כְ does mean "like" or "as." While it can form a temporal clause in combination with an infinitive construct, this temporal interpretation must be contextually supported rather than assumed.
Verb עָמַד and Possessive Suffix וֹ: Correct, the verb עָמַד means "to stand" or "to arise," and the suffix וֹ indicates possession, translating to "his."
Infinitive Construct: Agreed, the form is an infinitive construct.
Temporal Clause Interpretation: While כְ combined with an infinitive construct can imply a temporal clause, translating it as "as soon as" is an interpretative choice. A more literal translation is "when he stood" or "as he stood," and any temporal implication would be derived from what you believe is the context.
Possessive Suffix: Agreed, the suffix וֹ indicates "he" or "his."
Your interpretation that it is saying "as soon as he has risen" adds a temporal nuance that is contextually based rather than explicitly stated in the preposition and verb form. My translation aims for a more direct rendering of "when he stood" or "as he stood," which also respects the grammatical structure without adding interpretative elements not present in the original text.
Let's move on.
He writes:
It can also refer to the 4 generals after Alexander the Great. He came after the Persian kings, conqured all of Greece, had a mighty dominion, shortly after he conqured Greece he died, and his kingdom was divided among his 4 generals none of which were his decendents.
No, it can't, because this is about a Holy Covenant. I genuinely hope you can understand this because I know you tend to repeat the same misunderstandings and rarely admit when you are wrong. However, this is explicitly clear:
The phrase is: "על־ברית־קודש"
Breakdown:

Literal Translation:

Neither Alexander the Great nor anyone else you mention (or anyone related to Alexander) anything to do with a Holy Covenant. This is beyond ridiculous, and I couldn't believe your scholars were claiming this. I thought it was so absurd that it didn't even need refutation. Yet here I am, refuting you because you actually hold this view.
He writes:
That fits better than Exion's interpretation for a few reasons. First this king came after the 4 mentioned in verse 2. If those in verse 2 are the Caliphs this king can't be Mohammed who was before the Caliphs.
What makes you think that the mighty king came after the 4 kings? The 3rd verse only said:
"And a mighty king will arise and will rule a great dominion and do according to his will."
Are you claiming that this must be in chronological order just because the four kings were mentioned before the mighty king? If so, this is the first time I've heard such a claim. Please provide your proof for this supposed Biblical rule; I'd like to read it :). You won't provide any because none exist. But claiming that it does gives you something to "expose," so I understand your motive. However, in the real world, you're just making statements that aren't true.
The 4th verse says:
"...but not to his posterity, and not like the dominion that he ruled, for his kingdom will be uprooted and to others besides those."
The posterity refers to the Rashidun Caliphs, while "to others besides those" refers to Mu'awiyah and those who followed him. Do you know what "posterity" even means? Posterity literally means future followers or descendants. Lol. The mighty king is the one with the followers, which is why he is the one who brought the Holy Covenant from God, not the four other kings. Had you known what posterity means, you would never have written this in the first place, but we will look past this mistake. Now you know a new word and won't repeat this mistake again. Let's move on.
Regarding "The king of the south is prophet Muhammad" I had revisited this verse in part 2.
He writes:
This is false. The source Exion links doesn't give any English meaning. The BDB does give the English meaning. For the former it means sprout/branch, the latter means root.

Noun נֵצֶר (nétser) m (plural indefinite נְצָרִים, singular construct נֵצֶר־, plural construct נִצְרֵי־) [pattern: קֵטֶל]

  1. stem, shoot
  2. (literary, collectively) scion(s)

References:

The other word (i.e. שרש):
Root: שֹֽׁרֶשׁ (m.n.)
  1. root.
2. source, origin.
  1. bottom, lowest part.
  2. root, stem (Heb. grammar).
Source: מקור: Klein Dictionary
I don't know if you know this, but stem and branch are synonymous words, they essentially mean the same thing. And lowest part, bottom could also mean stem. Dictionaries define both words similarly:
Word: שֹׁרֶשׁ, שׁוֹרֶשׁ (m.) (b. h.; apocope of שרשר
, v. שָׁרָר) [chain, knot,] root. — Pl. שֳׁרָשִׁים, שֳׁרָשִׁין; constr. שָׁרְשֵׁי, שׁוֹרְשֵׁי. B. Bath. V, 4 העולה … ומן הש׳ וכ׳ that which shoots forth out of the trunk, or out of the roots, belongs to the landowner (v. גֶּזַע), expl. ib. 82ᵃ כל שאינו … זהו מן הש׳ that which does not see the light of day (when it shoots forth) is out of the roots’. Y. Ab. Zar. III, 43ᵃ top; Y. Taan. I, 64ᵇ ש׳ חטה the roots of wheat; ש׳ תאנה of fig-trees. Tosef. Shebi. VII, 17; ‘Uktsin I, 4, v. קוֹלָס. Ab. III, 17 וְשֳׁרָשָׁיו מרובין whose roots are many; a. fr.
Source: מקור: Jastrow Dictionary
Either way, let's pretend you're right (even though you're not) it still doesn't matter because a branch out of her roots did sprout, which came to be a sect called Khawarij. This was explained in part two. The ones that assassinated 'Ali were initially Shiites that later turned against 'Ali and assassinated him. It's interesting how Pulpit commentary writes:
"The version of the LXX. is very different here also, "And a plant shall arise out of his root against himself,"
He writes:
Edit: I just noticed another problem with Exion’s interpretation. They take Ali as both the commander mentioned in verse 5 who is one of commanders of the king of the south, and also as the king of the north mentioned in verse 6. That can’t be since the commander isn’t also the king of the north.
Revised in part 2 already.
He writes:
They show rather than trying to first establish the historical facts and show it lines up with the prophecy they are willing to misrepresent the historical facts to fit their interpretation of the prophecy and as their interpretation of the prophecy changes their claims about the historical facts change to match their new interpretation.
This is just your faulty conclusion and presumption. I speculated that they might have lied about 'Aishah being his wife. However, I'm not satisfied with speculations, so I revised the entire post of part 1, and it turned out to be even more accurate.
This marks the end of his part 2 post.

2024.06.01 13:15 thatoneguy79134 Splinter- 3rd darkness subclass fanconcept

Splinter is inspired by the slicing and mirror powers that the witness uses during the lightfall and tfs trailer. This is basically just a fun idea as to what a 'witness subclass' would look like.
Visuals: The splinter subclass would have its designs consist of broken glass and reflecting mirrors. Its energy would be a pale red with bright white streaks. Enemies killed by a splinter debuff would have look as if they were sliced into red segments before disappearing. Lore: If stasis is control and strand is going with the flow, splinter is ignorance. Rather than controlling or flowing with the universe, you have to actively deny its rules to use splinter. The witness carved a hole in the traveller by ignoring the strength of its shell.
GAMEPLAY:
Verbs:
Cut - enemys hit by cut take a small amount of damage and are given one stack of cut. If they receive 100 stacks, they will be hit by dismantle.
Visual: Cut would look like a small red slice going across the enemy's body
Dismantle - when an enemy is 'dismantled' they will receive a moderate amount of damage over the course of 1.5 seconds. Other enemies hit by dismantle will be given a varying amount of cut stacks, depending for how long they were in the aoe. Cut and dismantle would be your bread and butter for general ad clear. Dismantle would also stun overloads.
Visual: Where cut is one single slice, dismantle is a flurry of these slices going across the inflicted targets body, as if they're being diced.
Displacement - enemies affected by displacement are initially slowed by 60%, before going back to normal speed over the course of 3 seconds. Projectiles slowed by displacement are permanently slowed by 50%, and their damage decreased by 15%.
In pvp: Displacement would slow players by 30% and gradually return them to normal over 3 seconds.
Visual: Normal enemies that have been displaced would look like segment of their body have been cut offer and separated. These pieces eventually fuse back together as the slow effect decreases. Boss enemies would simply have a red hue to show they have been affected by displacement.
Rend - A high power single tick of damage in a small radius. This would be more helpful for taking care of healthier targets quickly. Hitting a barrier champion while they are shielded stuns them.
Visual: Rend would appear like a gash in the air, as if the universe itself was cut open. This gash would stay for half a second after a rend attack. This gash would look similar to the portals made by vergil in dmc5 (although more red instead of blue)
Guard points (splinter's main gimmick) When using a splinter powered melee, the first 0.3 seconds of the attack while have a guard point. If an enemy hits while the guard point is up, you will receive 60% reduced damage and be immune to one shots. It will also boost the damage of the melee by 50%. Projectiles will also proc the guard point depending on the overall damage of the projectile. Enemies hit by a guard point empowered melee are briefly flinched.
Visual/audio: When in the 'guard point stance' your guardian will radiate red splinter energy with white streaks. When hitting the guard point, the white streaks will turn black and make it resemble an impact frame.
The audio and animation of the melee would also change to make the attack feel more impactful.
Reflective plating - while reflectjve plating is active, gain 20% dr and empower your guard points to be more effective. Guard points with reflecting plate now active in the first 0.7 seconds of the melee rather 0.3, and will increase the damage resistance to 90%. Lastly, projectiles that hit the guardian while guard point is active will reflect back to the enemy (although for reduced damage)
In pvp: The only difference with pvp is that your head hit box will not be immune to one shots.
Visual: Reflective plating will look similar to guard point, the energy will just be much less intense.
Rupert drop (probably not what it would be in game but bubbles already taken) - Rupert drops are the splinter subclass pickups (even though you don't actually pick them up). Rupert drops are a hybrid between stasis crystals and tangles. They can be for either cover or they can be shot to pop into a small cutting explosion. When shot by their creator or allies, rupert drops will move away from where they were hit, the bigger tha damage, the faster it moves. Ruperts drop would have a 15 second cool down and be generated by killing enemies with rend.
Visual: Rupert drops would look like giant bubbles roughly the size of a guardian. when taking damage, they slow crystallize before exploding into shards of glass.
When spawning in. The rupert's drop would look as if its slowly being formed by pieces of glass coming out of the gash made by the rend.
Grenades:
Shred grenade - explodes on impact to create a moderately sized explosion (slightly larger than a scatter grenade) that would deal a total of 110 stack of cut over the course of 0.75 seconds.
Cleave grenade - sticks to target before exploding into a small radius rend attack.
Dispersing grenade - explodes into a field of displacement that slowly implodes to create a small displacement explosion. The initial field would act similarly to a dusk field grenade, while the implosion would be similar to a snare bomb in damage.
Subclasses:
Each of the subclasses would mirror the arc subclasses in a way, Since splinter would be the darkness antithesis to arc (like solastasis, void/strand)
Ronin - hunter subclass Where arcstriders use their hand to hand prowess and expertise with the pole arm, Ronin use their skill with the blade to fell even the largest of does with a single slash.
Ronins are inspired primarily by heroes from old samurai movies. Wandering swordsman who could defeat armies with nothing but their trusted sword.
The gameplay fantasy of ronin would consist of well timed guard points and high power single target damage using rending attacks. The subclass would have a higher skill ceiling than most, rewarding knowledge of enemy attack patterns with high damage attacks.
Melee - Unsheathing strike (2 charges) Striking enemies with your katana inflicts them with 30 stacks of cut. Standing still before attacking will increase the damage of the strike by 15%. When empowered by a guard point, the strike will deal 60 stacks of cut in a large radius.
Visual: The splinter katana's is made up of various uneven panes of broken glass. When empowered, the katana's blade goes from red and white to pure black.
Super - shimmering blade (roaming/one off) The Ronin unsheathes their blade when beginning the super. While in super, there are 2 attacks. Light attack - fast slashes that each deal 40 stacks of cut. Heavy attack - quickly sheathe the blade and become immobile. Releasing the attack button has the Ronin slash the air and rend every enemy in a large radius. This attack ends the super immediately.
Holding the attack for a longer period of time increases the damage of the rends, fully maxxing out at an 80% boost.
During the release of the attack, a guard point is active for 0.3 seconds (0.7 when reflective plating is active). Hitting the guard point immediately increases the attack damage to 80%, while also further boosting the range and damage by 15%.
Aspect 1 - crossguard slash After a successful guard point, follow up with a second slash that rends the opponent. Killing an enemy with slash regenerates 50% of your melee charge.
Aspect 2 - quickdraw sheathe Gives hunter a guard point during initial activation. Successful guard points now boost class a ability regeneration by 150% for 4 seconds.
Blastmarine - Titan subclass Blastmarines mirror arc strikers as both are 'soldier' subclasses. Where strikers are frontline fighters, blastmarines are the 'heavy artillery' weapons experts of their fireteam.
Where ronin are calm, collected samurai, Blast marines are loud, explosive 80s action heroes. Big guys with bigger guns.
The blastmarine gameplay fantasy consist of being the heavy weapons guy, battling the hordes of their enemies with their cutting and dismantling projectiles.
Melee - Knucklebuster Raise your left arm briefly (this is when the guard point is active) before cocking back their right arm's wrist cannon. Hitting enemies with this inflicts them with 50 stacks of cut. When empowered, the radius of the blast is increased and inflicts 80 stacks of cut
Visual: The guard point would resemble a boxer blocking a punch before counter attacking with a jab. The wrist cannon would resemble the red arm punch from ultrakill. The attack would also end with the blastmarine pumping their arm like a shotgun (cus it would look cool)
Super - devastator cannon (one off) The blastmarine would ready the cannon onto their shoulder (similarly to a scorch cannon). The cannon would need to be charged fo a short period before firing. The initial blast would deal high single target damage before imploding into this cloud large cloud of dismantling slashes. This cloud would last front seconds before disappearing.
Visual: the devastator cannon would look similar to a halo spartan laser, just much bigger and with a much bigger blast radius.
Aspect 1 - coverfire blaster Rally barricades now spawn in a heavy cannon for the blastmarine and their allies to pickup. This cannon fires at 300 rpm and has a total 25 rounds that it can fire before disappearing. These shots have a small aoe effect and each deal 20 stacks of cut. Continuous damage with the turret Grant's reflective plating. This aspect would act similarly to a gauss cannon from halo.
Aspect 2 - ballistic bombard
Enhance the functionally of your splinter grenades.
Shred grenade - improved radius and total damage and duration (now deals 170 stacks of cut over 1.5 seconds) Cleave grenade - can now be charged to skip across the ground up to 3 times. Each bounce creates a rend.
Dispersing grenade - increased radius of initial field and increased damage of implosion. Initial field now pulls in enemies and flinches them.
Glassformer - warlock subclass (name tbd) Where stormcaller is harmony within, the glassformer embraces the chaos of splinter to conquer the battlefield.
glassformers are inspired from crackpot scientists from monster movie. Creating inconceivable creations.
The gameplay of glassformers revolves around using rupert drops and creating unpredictable combinations.
Melee - broken flurry (2 charges) The glassformer sends a burst of 8 panes of splinter. Each pane inflicts 6 stacks of cut. When empowered, the total amount of panes increases from 8 to 12, they also can increased tracking to targets.
Visual: Each of the panes would shoot off from the glassformer's fingertips. When empowered, the panes turn black.
Super - razing burst (one off) The glassformer raises a giant ruperts drop infront of them, before slashing it with their splinter infused hand and rending it, this creates a large ape explosions that dismantle enemies in its radius. Enemies near the giant gashes are slowly pulled in.
Visual: Razing burst is essentially a large spherical blender that would pull in enemies not originally caught in its blast.
Aspect 1 - fracturing chasm Rends now linger for a longer duration and suck in enemies in radius of it. Killing enemies that are pulled grants reflective plating.
Aspect 2 - chromatic concoction Inflicting ruperts drops with elemntal verbs gives the explosion that property. (For example, applying jolt to the rupert's drop gives the explosion jolt.) A singular bubble can hold up to 3 new verbs.
Visual: When a verb is given to the ruperts drop, the respective subclass energy will begin swirling around the inside of the drop. The more verbs, the more colours swirling around.
Fragments: Fragments would be obtained similarly to strand, killing enemies with splinter will have a chance to give a 'shard of splinter'
Killing targets with rend reduces rupert's drop cooldown (0.5 seconds per enemy)
Apply more cut stacks
Picking up orbs of power grants reflective plating
Rapid finale blows with dismantle grant grenade energy
Precision finale blows against displaced enemies creates a displacing explosion
Super finale blows create cutting explosions.
Conclusion: I'm ngl this post is wayyyy longer than I thought it'd be. I wanted to just spitball an idea I had the other day for a new subclass

2024.06.01 09:03 Inspector-birdie Name the Family (Letter Edition)

Unless specified otherwise, all first names should start with C 😊😂
Surname: A verb beginning with C
Grandmother: First name is an elegant long name that begins with C. Middle name is a virtue name. Optional: Her maiden name is a type of bird
Grandfather: First name is a name that has been out of fashion since the early 1900s, starting with C. Middle name is a surname.
Aunt 1: Named after the book Granny was reading when she went into labour in 1962, which conveniently started with C. Her middle name is loosely based on the author of that same book.
Aunt 1's husband: First name starts with a K, but it's close enough that they let it go. He has a very feminine middle name and claims to have none if asked. Optional: Surname is an English river
Cousin 1 (Boy): Continuing the apparent family tradition, both his first and middle names start with C. His cousins say he has a vampire name, as they're taken from so far back in history, and are so unusual, that only a vampire would think they were acceptable names to give to a child.
Aunt 2: Named for the unusual location of her birth (Naturally, beginning with C), her slightly odd first name is made up for by her very pretty middle name, which thankfully also starts with C, so that she can use it in public instead.
Aunt 2's wife: Her first name is very short and typically masculine, though it suits her personality very well, but sadly doesn't start with C (This was far more controversial to Granny than her gender). To save the day, she told granny that her middle name did in fact start with C, by simply changing the first letter of her actual middle name. Optional: Her surname starts with the name of an animal
Cousin 2 (Twin #1, girl): Her parents decided to spare their kids the misfortune of two names starting with C, so only her first name does. It also has an obvious nickname which definitely doesn't start with C, just in case. Her middle name starts with the same initial as one of her moms.
Cousin 2 (Twin #2, Boy): Like his sister, his C first name has a non-C nickname, and his middle name starts with the initial of his other mom
Mother: In keeping with the last minute name inspirations of her sisters, she is named after one of the nurses who assisted in her birth. Sadly, none of the female nurses had names starting with C, so she's named after the only male nurse present, who's name fitted the C criteria. Her middle name is very feminine to make up for the male first name.
Father: Neither his first or middle names start with C, but fortunately a C nickname can be made out of either of them, so he got away with it. Optional: Surname is a brand of watches
Son: Mom leaned fully into the C name tradition. She also happened to love her weird first name, so named her son after the first C thing she saw out of the window when he was born. His middle name also begins with C, but is slightly more normal- just very Irish.
Triplets (Any gender): The name combinations for three (!) Babies was endless. Mom settled on giving them C first names, with the second letter being the next vowel in order (E.g., Baby 1's name starts Ca, next is Ce, etc.), and Irish middle names to match their brother.
Daughter: Fortunately, despite being the youngest, there were plenty of very normal C names left to be used. Mom chose to ignore all of them and name her baby after the very specific shade of nail polish she was wearing when she gave birth. Her middle name is Irish too, just for consistency.
Cat (Any gender): A very witchy/warlocky C name
Dog 1 (Female): Big, fluffy and chaotic. She has a far more normal C name than any of her human siblings.
Dog 2 (Male): Small and hyper. He is named after whatever C thing he keeps chewing on every morning.

2024.05.27 22:25 CaradogRhys Team Name and Logo Concepts

Team Name and Logo Concepts
As the inaugural PWHL season draws to a dramatic close with a winner takes all final game for the Walter Cup and with the news that branding for all teams will be announced in the offseason I thought I would throw out some quick concepts based off of names I’ve seen thrown around in discussion.
Boston Shamrocks, Minnesota Valkyries, Montreal Maroons, New York Torch, Ottawa Owls and Toronto Fury
Boston Shamrocks - No brainer leaning into Boston’s Irish connections and it works well with their green colour scheme. The first logo is to resemble a shamrock branded puck from above and have a passing similarity to the Bruin’s logo. Second logo is that same branded puck but on its side with a twisted shamrock to indicate motion as if the puck has been shot.
Minnesota Valkyries - As Minnesota has a very strong Nordic heritage, it felt apt to use the iconography of the strong female warriors of the Valkyries for a hockey team. The helmet is decorated after the state flag and the face guard forms a ‘M’ shape. Twin sticks are crossed underneath with ‘M’ tape on the blades. The first logo has them crossed in a ‘V’ for ‘Valkyries’ and the second has them in a traditional crossed ‘X’.
Montreal Maroons -an ode to the long since defunct Montreal Maroons of the NHL, and matching their current colour scheme. As ‘Maroon’ is a colour it is quite difficult to represent in a non abstract way so I went with a good old Quebecois Fleur de lys, extending the leaves out and stylising them into an ‘M’. Probably could have included more hockey symbolism but I liked the simplicity of it, similar to the Canadiens ‘C’.
New York Torch - I took the two most iconic landmarks of New York and incorporated them into the initials of ‘NY’. The Empire State Building forming the left stem of the ‘N’ and the liberty ‘Torch’ protruding from a hockey stick to make up the ‘Y’. The Empire State represents the heights that the team and sport of women’s hockey aim to achieve and the torch being a symbol of liberty, the freedom to play and enjoy the sport and the guiding light leading the way for others.
Ottawa Owls - As Ottawa is the seat of parliament in Canada and a collective of Owls is a ‘parliament’ it was a no brainer. Furthermore, the Greek goddess of war and wisdom Athena is often depicted with the familiar of an Owl. Displaying the skill (wisdom) and strength (war) that are needed in the sport of hockey. The Logo is the silhouette of an Owl swooping in front of one of the towers of Parliament Hill. It’s wing shaped like the blades of hockey sticks and it’s talon circled like a hockey puck.
Toronto Fury - Digging into Toronto’s Women’s hockey history to use a name inspired by the ‘Toronto Furies’ of the CWHL. Adapting the name from the horrors of Greek legend to the verb of released anger to represent the furore and force of a hockey player. The logo is the CN tower rising into a maple leaf, an icon of Toronto on a an icon of Canada. The base of the tower is stylised into a ‘TF’ based on the ‘T’ from the flag of Toronto and a throwback to the Toronto Furies of old.
I hope you enjoy and I look forward to the full reveal and what other concepts people come up with!

2024.05.27 20:35 symonx99 Kèilem light verbs and proverbs

I've already made some posts featuring specific grammatical aspects of Kèilem, mainly focusing on locational and dispositional verbs, movement verbs and the anaphoric use of adjectives in Kèilem, alongside an article about the expressive usage of ideophones and noun incorporation featured in issue 12, Supra II of segments.
This time I want to focus on a category of light verbs and their usage as a stand in for more specific verbs pertaining to their semantic area, arriving to some constructions in which, for a lack of a better terminology, that I hope some of you can give me, they act as proverbs, anaphorically referring to a verb that has already been cited in the conversation.
In Kèilem there is a dozen of verbs that have a wide meaning and can be used to refer to a generic class of actions and events, here I'll put a partial list with the more commonly used:
The most common usage of this verbs is to give the idea of the semantic area to which the action described by the speaker pertains without giving to much details either because 1) they don't have a more specific idea of the action's nature, 2) the speaker has the exact name on the tip of their tongue but cannot recollect the exact word 3) or the action is so complicated and difficult to describe without giving too much irrelevant details.
Let's see some examples of this situations:
kub son rant, kun se tadi 1SG NEG know , think 3SG light.verb I really don't know, I think he was moving/transporting something
are se lefi la bsan yesterday 3SG light.verb LOC statue Yesterday she was doing whatchamacallit? to the statue (giving the idea that she was damaging/destroying it)
su koe 3SG light.verb They are doing some kind of artistic exhibition (shying from a lengthy description of what they are precisely doing)
In this case the exact nature of the action is left undescribed but the sentences refer to a specific action/event, it is also possible to express the idea that the speaker is talking about a multitude of different actions/events pertaining to a certain semantic area. This case is expressed through the use of the correct light verb and the the list marker no
kelarie ren no lili
This. Weekend 1PL LIST ProVerb(recreational verbs)
This weekend we’ve done various recreational activities (eg. dancing, whatching a spectacle, singing etc)
To note the contrast with the same sentence without the list marker
Kelarie ren lili
This.Weekend 1PL ProVerb(recreational verbs)
This weekend we’ve done a recreational activity (a single kind of recreational activity that the speaker doesn't want to describe explicitly)
There are other construction where light verbs are used and it is in this situation that they behave like a sort of a proverb, since they are used to refer anaphorically to some other verb already used in the sentence/discourse.
The first situation of this kind happens in focus constructions where the thing being focused on is a verb phrase.
loi naje saska , are set se lefi
FOC1 ToEat Banana , Yesterday FOC2 3SG light.verb
Talking about eating bananas, SHE did so yesterday
In this example there are two different focus particles loi and set, the first one is used equivalently to the construction talking about x, while the second one is used to highlight in a contrastive way an element among the sentence, giving the idea that SHE did it and not someone else.
Indipendently from this aside on focus, what I want to show is that when a verb phrase is being focused on, in the main clause a light verb specific for the semantic area of the focused verb is used in the main sentence.
Another situation where light verbs are used with this proverbal function are comparative constructions where the thing that is being compared is the way two different referents perform a certain action, lets see an example:
Kub dali zasti nai se pala
1SG run fast more 3SG ligh.verb (movement intransitive)
I run faster than him
This kind of construction can be schematised as Subj1+Action+Qualifier+Modifier+Subj2+Proverb
This concludes the constructions explored in this post, I hope reading this post has been interesting and maybe can give you some inspiration for your conlangs

2024.05.27 14:00 cheatsykoopa98 "The king is naked" Joy Boy and void century theory

I've been thinking about what exactly would the world government, specially Imu would be willing to erase an entire century worth of history. I believe it's because of both Joy Boy mocking of the WG's ridiculousness.
The king is naked is a story in which a snobbish king commissions a new robe for himself and ends up hiring a fake tailor that "makes" him an invisible robe that can only be seen by those pure of heart. The king, not being able to see it but unwilling to admit he was unpure of heart, was fooled by the fake tailor and walked the streets of his kingdom showing off his "new robes", to which everyone was unable to tell him he was actually naked. nobody wanted to be seen as impure or to go against the king. Until a child raised their voice pointing at the king and yelling "the king is naked". No one could be more pure of heart than a child, so the king understood he was fooled and was embarrassed to realize his situation.
I think Oda might be taking inspiration from this story, but in a deeper level. The only person we know lived in the great kingdom was joy boy, but the name "great kingdom" was first mentioned by professor clover. we don't know if it was actually a kingdom or if they even had kings there. but we know they were technologically advanced, enough to face the 20 WG kingdoms on their own, even if they lost in the end.
What started this whole conflict, though, I think is Joy Boy. Let's look at the world nobles today. They dress ridiculous like they're astronauts or something, they have a whale tail for a haircut and everyone is forced to bow down in their presence, take any punishment they want and arent allowed to attack them in any way. Joy Boy looked at this and laughed, like one today could look at how the ancient egyptians believed the pharaohs were actual gods and served them as slaves. Joy Boy acting like luffy and never actually meeting any royalty in his life, laughed at this, not knowing the weight of he was doing. maybe he even actually mocked the nobles in front of everyone, causing everyone to laugh. this story spread quickly and soon everyone started realizing how stupid it was to serve people like the world nobles. that they outnumbered them and that they could be overthrown.
I might even say Imu's ancestor (assuming its not still the same person after all these years) was the one publicly mocked by joy boy in front of everyone, which is why they still hide from the world. a faceless government cant be targeted as easily.
But in short, joy boy started a rebellion not because he was angry at the world nobles or anything, but because of how ridiculous they were, and how quickly everyone laughed both at them and at themselves for letting them rule, and that led to a lot of uprising and chaos around the world with people trying to get rid of their royals
the world government and specially imu were furious at this and decided to teach the joyboy a lesson by going to war with them.
they saw how even though the people of the great kindom didnt have a royal family they were still very prosperous and advanced and couldnt let this information spread. people must believe the world government is needed, so they erased every trace of the great kingdom from history
the rest of the century might be how long the war took or how long it took to kill everyone who laughed at Imu's acenstor so nobody would remember
So skipping a few centuries, Roger and his crew might have found out what Imu looked like without their shadowy disguise and laughed at how ridiculous they are, and how funny it is that they would go this far just to not be mocked again, and even so it didnt work because there they were, laughing at the king again
I do believe they left the one piece there because they knew even though they knew the secret of the world, they didnt have the nika fruit or had joy boy with them to fight imu, and probably imu can only be fought by joy boy
the will of D is the will to laugh at traditions that make no sense and actively harm people, like serving people like the world nobles. I think the D stands for the name of the great kingdom, not a verb or a noun or anything like that, but it could be said it stands for the "D"isregard for authority or the "D"anger it poses for the ruling class
sorry for the long ramble, I hope it makes sense
EDIT: also, the world nobles overthrew the lunarians and tried to make themselves look like the new gods, but they look really goofy, thats another thing joy boy could be mocking
