2024.05.16 17:42 Future-Ad2060 Anyone else feel loneliness playing this game?

As a 40yo 2-kid father with a full time job plus two own enterprises, I think 500 gaming hours (mostly sacrificing sleeping time) is kind of respectable. And as expected for a completely noob in DnD, I did a lot of mistakes in balanced 1st run, had a good time experimenting with new possibilities in my tactician 2nd run, and currently in my 3rd (HM) run, just about to meet Nightsong/fight Balthazar, and a bit scared to confront Katheric/Myrkull.
BG3 deservedly reach my all-time TOP3 games, sided with TW3 and RDR2. I avoid to rank this 3, despite I had to admit TW3 incarved a unique and permanent mark in my soul. But the replay factor in BG3 is absolutely stunning and incomparable.
My distress: the loneliness of having no one to talk about the AMAZING experiences of this game. Wife, friends and coworkers sadly don't share this interest. My kids are too young. There are a few DnD groups in my city, really opened to new members, but with my schedule I don't have time. Even my best friend, the only one into DnD (and who recommended me BG3) joined the "Act 3 Quitter's Band", barely reaching the circus. Maybe the so expected crossplay will bring his interest back, because I'm a PC player and he's PS5, but no real expectations...
Can you imagine not having someone to share the thrill of listening to Raphael's fight song for the first time? Or the Karlach's speech after beating Gortash?
Anyone else feel like this?
Anyways, I fortunately found a lot of comfort here. I'm from Brazil, where Reddit isn't very popular, so the US community is - by far - the richest in topics, and I really feel among friends here, despite some language barriers. And for that, I thank all of you!

BrawlCap Presents: BSC 2024 May Monthly Qualifiers Recap
So... this was a wild weekend we all just watched. We saw Revenant AND NAVI fail to qualify this month from APAC, a lot of drama happening over in the EMEA region, we FINALLY saw the top South American team get signed and we played some fun Brawl Stars quizzes over at Reddy's stream during the NA Qualifiers.
I would also like to point out that I am not responsible for any jinxing that may have happened this past weekend. No I won't be talking much about the drama that happened this past weekend. If you want to see more about it, I'm sure there are some posts on here or tweets that talk about it more in depth. I just want to talk about the Qualifiers and nothing else.
Now that I got that out of the way, let's talk about what happened in the BSC 2024 May Monthly Qualifiers!
The Thumbnail!

Asia Pacific

May Asia Pacific Monthly Qualifiers Results
Crazy Raccoon: This time Crazy Raccoon were able to get a nice run in the Monthly Qualifiers after getting sent to Losers last month. Only dropping one set, this Japanese team is looking to claim their 2nd Monthly Final crown of the year and all but secure a spot for the World Finals. With teams like Revenant and NAVI not standing in their way this time, there is a good chance they can repeat. However with how much chaos that has happened this month, I guess anything is still possible. Still should be the favorites to win it all though.
Rival Esports: The newly signed trio in Rival have somehow made their way to the Monthly Finals from Winners after getting a huge upset against NAVI to qualify. Rival will hopefully take advantage of there being no NAVI or Revenant this month, but they will have to go through a tough bracket as I think Why We Lose could be tougher than we all might think and Angelic with that ping advantage might be tricky to beat. If they at least make it to the Grand Finals, they should be in a good position to play in at least the LCQ assuming they keep qualifying.
Angelic: Little to no scrim time? No problem! At least for Angelic as they were able to cruise through the Winners Bracket and never once had to deal with a tough opponent as HOW were unsuccessful in being able to play them. Angelic are looking to take advantage of there being no Revenant or NAVI this month and there is a good chance they could get a bigger lead on them and even Rival is they out-place them this month. If there was a time for the Hong Kong group to win, it's now.
Coco Loco: This Coco team is going Loco as they were able to qualify from Winners thanks to Revenant choking against Team S2. While they were able to beat Team S2 in a close match, they still have some work to do as they ended up getting matched with 3RG who could be challenging for them. Despite the slow start they had, they are slowly climbing their way back up in the rankings and now might have a chance to stay in the LCQ race as long as things go their way. We'll see if they can get another MF match win this month!
Master Entertainer: A new team has joined the Monthly Finals and their journey was quite interesting to say the least. Their bracket was going well until they faced Rival who would send them to Losers. Luckily, bracket RNG was on their side and while they did have a close call in one of their matches, it was pretty much smooth sailing the rest of the way. Now will hopefully be their chance to cause some chaos as they go up against Crazy Raccoon. It will be challenging, but from what we have seen so far this year, anything is possible.
Team S2: The 2nd S team has arrived and they should definitely not be taken lightly despite this being their first Monthly Final. Their run was going well in Winners and they somehow managed to beat Revenant 2-0 in the process. Coco Loco would send them to Losers after a tough loss, but they would still just need one win to qualify. Their match against Octopus Primes wasn't easy, but they pulled through and will now get a chance to also cause some chaos. Can this Korean team stun us all and add Angelic to their list of top teams they've beaten this month?
3R Gaming: 3RG had a pretty easy road in the Winners Bracket, but they were unfortunately matched with Crazy Raccoon in the qualifying match. I think you could guess what happened there. What's even worse is that they got placed in the same section as Revenant and Nai Dug in Losers. Nai Dug were somehow victorious in their match against Revenant (yes RNT placed Top 16), but they were no match for 3RG had came out on top in a three set victory. Now they'll get a chance to climb their way back into the LCQ race, but their bracket ain't gonna be easy as they will have to go through Coco Loco and Raccoon.
Why We Lose: After getting sent to the Losers Bracket early, WWL managed to get on a nice streak which also ended with them getting a win against HOW. Their next match was a close one and while they were able to win, NAVI was their next opponent and beating them would mean they would qualify. I think you can guess what happened. They somehow defeated the April Champions and sent them packing. While this was a brutal loss for NAVI and it hurting their chances to claim a Worlds spot, WWL is looking to cause some more chaos in APAC as they could stun us all and beat Rival.
May Asia Pacific Monthly Finals Bracket
Quarterfinal Match to Watch - Rival Esports VS. Why We Lose: I think WWL has the potential to upset Rival this month. I don't know why, but I just have a gut feeling that WWL is underrated. They do have a solid trio who did manage to take out the defending champs, but so did Rival in Winners. This is the only matchup I could honestly see end in a close battle with maybe CL VS. 3RG being a contender. At this time I would still lean towards Rival, but we'll see what the scrims will have to say about that.

EMEA

May EMEA Monthly Qualifiers Results
F/A Jordan 4's: This trio of players were literally assembled 24 hours before the qualifiers started, yet somehow they not only managed to qualify directly to Winners, but they also beat arguably the best team in the region in SK Gaming (they didn't even drop a set). Despite all the drama surrounding this team with Decaii getting perma banned, they were able to pick up Blaksxy who will likely be filling in for him. Also glad to see Buzko playing in his first Monthly Final, but I did not expect it to be with this FA roster. Can they beat Reverso though?
Oceanus Gaming: Three Monthly Qualifiers, zero set losses so far. It was honestly a breeze for Oceanus as they never really had to play a super difficult opponent once. Didn't even have to face BC* who were sent to Losers early. A clean bracket for these group, but unfortunately they did not get lucky with the MF bracket RNG as their first opponent will be against HMBLE. This is likely a do or die moment for Oceanus and losing here would hurt them a bit, but luckily for them ZETA & SK will be playing each other in the Quarterfinals so they'll still have a chance even if they lose to HMBLE.
Reply Totem: Totem is back and honestly about damn time. Totem were able to find their form again this month and even managed to beat HMBLE to qualify directly from Winners. While SK did qualify from the Losers Bracket, they were thankfully not paired up with them this time. Instead they got an opponent who will be playing in their first Monthly Final this year in Ladder>Skill. If Totem somehow don't beat them though next week, I might start doubting them again. Please just win one match on the big stage.
ZETA DIVISION: Hold on let me put on my surprised face real quick. Wow ZETA qualified from Winners again? That's so crazy! Who could've seen this coming? But for real though this is pretty good for ZETA as they were able to easily qualify directly from Winners and managed to beat Eclipsar in the process. ZETA will be looking to defend their Monthly Final crown and try to win a second straight. They were paired up with SK in their first match, but if they win that they should be golden for a Grand Finals spot. It's never easy winning multiple in the most competitive region, but these guys make it look easy. Will they win another Monthly Final and almost all but guarantee a spot in Worlds?
Ladder>Skill: Before I get into anything I just want to say congrats on this team winning against all odds and qualifying for the Monthly Finals for the first time together. This is truly an accomplishment for them and I wish them nothing but the best this weekend against Totem. Now on to the situation, I'll say is that this was very unfortunate for BC that they had to go out like that. A bug ending their chances of qualifying this month and now made it anyones race to claim that final LCQ spot, that's brutal. All you can do now is just hope things work in your favor in the final two months of the season. Treat every game like it could be your last and give it your all moving forward. That's all I'll say about the situation.
Reverso Gaming EU: Ay another new team has joined the Monthly Finals! And it's another Italian group too! From what I have heard about them, this group managed to claw their way through the Qualifiers and somehow managed to upset FUT Esports and sent them to Losers. While they weren't able to take down Jordans in the following round, they were able to secure a win against AoF in their Qualifying Match. The bracket RNG gods blessed them with this qualification and they blessed them again by giving them a rematch against Jordan. They were close against them last time so I think they could maybe stand a chance.
SK Gaming: Losing to Jordan early in the bracket meant that they would likely have to go through a gauntlet of tough teams in the Losers Bracket as they would have to go up against two solid teams in FUT and Eclipsar. Wait hold on scratch that. I meant Eclipsar and Pale Fox who somehow upset FUT in Losers Top 24 (I watched that match on Teddie's stream and it was insane). PFE did give SK a run for their money, but SK were able to pull through in the end. Eclipsar were no match for them either and that's how they somehow managed to qualify despite all of that happening. Now they'll have to go up against... ZETA. Man they bracket RNG gods were not kind at all this month.
HMBLE: This was a decent month for HMBLE overall I'd say. While they weren't able to defeat Totem in their Winners Qualifying Match, they were able to secure an easy opponent for them to qualify from Losers. All was going well until it was revealed they would be going up against Oceanus. And possibly going against Totem in the following round if they beat them. Man can HMBLE ever catch a break this year? First coming up short in the previous two Grand Finals and now this. I will say if they manage to win it all this month, this will be the team to beat the rest of the season. Will their bracket be too much for them to handle, or will we hold a funeral for Symantec's table after he chops it in half with his might fist?
May EMEA Monthly Finals Bracket
Quarterfinal Match to Watch - ZETA DIVISION VS. SK Gaming: It was either this matchup or Oceanus VS. HMBLE and I think we can all agree that a battle between the two teams that have won a Monthly Final so far this year deserves to be in the MUST WATCH section. The fact that this is a Quarterfinals Match of all things is very wild and bold of the BSC admins, but hey that just means that both teams gotta give it their all if they want to possibly all but secure a Worlds spot this year. The winner likely plays in Grands too as their next round opponents should be easy for both of them. The loser of this match should still be in the Worlds race, but it might be harder to directly qualify with there being two more Monthly Finals after this one.

South America

May South America Monthly Qualifiers Results
Calabresos F/A: This team has yet to lose a single match so far this season as they were able to easily cruise through their bracket without really breaking much of a sweat. Some more good news for them is that their bracket does look pretty easy up until the Grand Finals which is good for them since it means they'll be getting closer to claiming that Worlds spot sooner than we had expected. Calabresos were also recently signed by Spacestation Gaming who dropped their NA roster due to... reasons I won't talk about here, but hey glad to see these guys get signed finally.
Team Queso: Things have been going pretty well for TQ so far this month. They managed to breeze their way through an easy bracket up until they had to face Marruecos. It was a close battle, but TQ would come out on top in the end and qualify from Winners. Their LCQ hopes remain pretty hopeful as not only were they able to get a newcomer in the BSC Monthly Finals scene, but one of the teams they were competing with in SKC failed to qualify. If there was a time to give it their all, it'd be this month as a deep run could put them in a good position to take an LCQ spot.
F/A MiniPekkas: The MiniPekkas had no trouble in the Qualifiers as they managed to not drop a single set the entire qualifier which included a win against UDP in their final Qualifier match. They will be playing against UDP again in their first match of the Monthly Finals, but they are looking pretty good as of late to the point where I think if they go on a deep run this season, they should be able to at least secure an LCQ spot thanks to SKC not qualifying.
Reis Do PL: RDP got pretty lucky they weren't able to face SKC in their bracket. They did have to take on Olimpo who was a bit of a challenge, but they managed to pull through and won the following match against CFZ to qualify. Now they'll have to go up against Marruecos who will finally get to show who they really are after playing against Calabresos in the previous two Monthly Finals. This will be a crucial Monthly Final for RDP as a win would keep their LCQ hopes alive.
Marruecos: Marruecos had a pretty easy bracket to start off as nobody was super challenging for them up until the final Winners Match against Queso. It was a hard fought battle, but they came up just short and had to survive SKC in their Losers match. SKC forfeited their first Winners match and had to go on a deep Losers run in order to survive, but after a back and forth battle, Marruecos came out on top in the end and sent SKC home packing early. This win definitely helped Marruecos and their chance of claiming an LCQ spot. While they might have to face RDP in the Quarterfinals, at least they don't have to deal with Calabresos again.
Olimpo Squad: Olimpo had to go through a somewhat deep Losers run after losing against RDP in a close match. Luckily they were able to breeze through their next two matches after that and while their match against Blue lock was super close with every set ending in three games, Olimpo came out on top and qualified. Now Olimpo will have to take on the best team in the region as their first opponent in the Monthly Finals. While it might be tough for them to beat, from what we have seen in BSC this year, anything is possible.
Mochilas: Another new team has arrived in the South America Monthly Finals and it's a Brazilian team I'm not super familiar with. Looking at their bracket though, it seems they were able to beat Level who made it to the Monthly Finals last month, but they were quickly shut down by Blue lock in the match after that. While they did have to win three Losers matches to qualify, it wasn't super difficult for them as Mochilas managed to win three straight only having issues in one match during that run. Now Mochilas will be facing Queso in their first Monthly Finals together which will certainly be their toughest challenge yet.
Urubus Do Pix: A pretty good showing for UDP overall as this Brazilian team had little to no trouble up until their final two matches of the Qualifiers. A loss against the MiniPekkas in the Winners bracket still put them in a win and in scenario, but UDP were able to secure a win against Arranca Diu in a close three set victory. Now they'll be out to get revenge as they will play the MiniPekkas in a rematch in their first Monthly Finals match.
May South America Monthly Finals Bracket
Quarterfinal Match to Watch - Reis Do PL VS. Marruecos: To me this is the matchup I think that will be the most crucial one for both teams on their quest to claim an LCQ spot. RDP has shown they can take on the best in this region as they almost beat the MiniPekkas last month while Marruecos despite a slow start, have shown they are capable of beating good teams like SKC as well. The winner of this match keeps their LCQ hopes alive for now while the loser might have to rely on a miracle in order to qualify. This should be a good one to watch that will likely get put on the B Stream.

North America

May North America Monthly Qualifiers Results
CT Esports: The former Spacestation roster minus RBM & toast have teamed up with rookie Evex to see if they could maybe keep their LCQ hopes alive since they were able to secure their points from the previous two months. Well, they somehow managed to breeze through the Winners bracket up until their match against Tribe. It was a close contest between these two teams, but CTE managed to pull through in the end in a massive upset. Things keep on getting better for them as the bracket RNG gods blessed them and gave them Homeless as their first match. We'll see how good this group can play on the big stage and I can't wait to see Evex play next weekend.
West Coast FA: West Coast introduced a new member to the team in Jheart after cutting Shine from the group, but that didn't stop them from dominating their section of the bracket. They did actually manage to struggle in two of their final three matches going up against the former DC Team with toast on it and Complexity, but they prevailed and a sweep against the Oinkers would clinch them a Monthly Finals spot from Winners. Now they'll have to go up against Luminosity who should be a challenge for this group, but we'll see if they'll be able to get their first Monthly Final match win of the season.
Juan Carlos Team: The recently signed JCT group now with a solid staff managed to prove why they are now considered a serious contender for a Worlds spot this year. They were not dropping a single set all the way up to their final match where they managed to beat Luminosity in a three set victory to qualify. Everything went their way this qualifier and things ended up getting better as they will be facing a Motomamis team dealing with ping issues in their first match. We'll see if they can continue this win streak next weekend and we'll see which new org ended up signing them next week as well.
STMN: After falling just short of a Monthly Finals crown, STMN got back to work in this qualifier and did not disappoint whatsoever as they easily climbed their way through the Winners side dealing with only one small bump along the road in Motomamis. Unfortunately for STMN, they have to deal with an even bumpier road this month as they will likely be getting a challenging opponent no matter who they face in each round. Their first opponent being Tribe whom they will be facing off in a competitive setting in about a year. This will be crucial for STMN as a win here will keep their Worlds hopes alive while a loss could mean they would have to start from the LCQ... if they even make it there that is.
Luminosity: After failing to qualify last month due to Patchy being absent, Luminosity did manage to come back a bit stronger. While they did fall to JCT in their Winners qualifying match, they would end up having to face the Real Ones who were no trouble for them at all. Their bracket for the Monthly Finals though will be tough to get through and while their first opponent will be up against West Coast, their next match (if they win) will be tougher as they will have to get through either Tribe or STMN. Can they pick up the slack and go on a deep run to stay alive in the race to Worlds?
Motomamis FA: This FA group with newly added player RBM managed to perform well in their first qualifier together. A solid showing overall only dropping one match and two sets the entire qualifier with their only losses being against STMN. While they were able to qualify by beating a decent NA group in IX Squares, they still have a lot of work to do against JCT in the Monthly Finals. With the ping disadvantage they'll have the entire tournament it certainly won't be easy, but hopefully having RBM on their team will be the saving grace they need to help keep it up in the race for a postseason spot.
Tribe Gaming: A good start as always from Tribe, but things did end up taking an unexpected turn as Evex would finally end up beating Tribe under CTE and send Tribe to Losers after failing to do so back in March. While Tribe were able to easily qualify with a win over 512 the next day, the cracks are slowing showing as they have been struggling a bit lately against some of the better teams in NA. With a classic rivalry matchup against STMN coming up, Tribe will need to sharpen their axes and prepare themselves for a crucial battle in order to keep their lead on the NA leaderboards.
Homeless: These Homeless players had a tough challenge ahead of them as they no longer had Steel nor Evex on their team. Luckily with the addition of a veteran player in Shine on their team, they were able to at least make some progress in Winners before losing to Luminosity in a close three set match. They then had to win three straight matches to qualify and luckily for them, they didn't have much issue with any of their opponents (except for maybe one team named Game Two Players). The Oinkers were no issue and we finally get to see tacos and Vegeta in their first Monthly Final, but I think Evex and CT Esports might want to put an end to their run next weekend. We'll see if Homeless can go from rags to riches in the Monthly Finals, but just like in real life it won't be easy.
May North America Monthly Finals Bracket
Quarterfinal Match to Watch - STMN VS. Tribe Gaming: The fact that this is a Quarterfinals match is just criminal, but hey we at least get to see a classic NA rivalry that we only saw once last year due to subregions. Tribe is looking to have a better month after getting upset by JCT last month while STMN is looking to stay alive in at least the LCQ race. A win for Tribe could mean STMN's chances of making Worlds will be near impossible and they will have to try for an LCQ spot, but a win for STMN (and maybe a deep run) could mean it would be anyones game to claim one of the Worlds spots. A crucial match for both teams and the winner of this match would have to likely go up against Luminosity which will definitely be fun to watch. Get your popcorn ready for the lower half of the bracket because it's definitely gonna be absolute cinema watching all four teams fighting for that Grand Finals spot.

Conclusion

That should be everything you need to know about this Monthly Qualifier. Let me know who you think will win the Monthly Finals from each region in the comments below. I'll be releasing my Expert Predictions next Thursday (or later depending on when I get my scrim data).

2024.05.16 16:21 gordonxavier52 Why are my YouTube video impressions stuck for 5 days?

So, I uploaded a video on my new channel have noticed that the Impressions count in YouTube Analytics is stuck at 14 only. The Impressions CTR is 35.7%. What could be a reason that the impressions count isn't going up? This is now happening for my 3rd video. Its not that the title doesn't have any search volume. When I started my channel I used to get around 500+ impressions but now the last 3 videos have only got 14-15 impressions. I have also been posting a few shorts of which I have got some subscribers but I am pretty sure they arent interested in my long form videos. Is YT thinking that if my own subscribers don't want to watch it then why give impressions to my videos? I am not saying my videos are excellent and deserve a ton of impressions but just 14 impressions is way too low and I am not sure what should I do. Any advice would be appreciated.

2024.05.16 11:56 ALDO113A Help a struggling Christian (me) deal with this deconstruction of Paul and Bible-era perception of same-sex intercourse (basically saying "That kinda sex emasculates, and that's terrible") by AcademicBiblical if you can?

I was shared this while on a thankfully civilized talk. Here's the link, but I'll clean up the original text to be more digestible, maybe alter a few of it.
https://www.reddit.com/AcademicBiblical/comments/1c5ucxj/response_to_sikers_analysis_of_homosexuality_in
Here goes
1. Siker seems to be offering a scholarly version of Matthew Vines' argument
It being "Paul can't be condemning what we think of as committed loving homosexual relationships, because he was thinking of bad things like prostitution or uncontrolled-lust homosexuality."
So, the idea is to claim that Paul's letters can't be enlisted to authorize contemporary homophobia since he wouldn't have known about the kinds of relationships gay Christians want to have now.
I appreciate the contemporary ethics of Siker's approach since homophobia is dehumanizing and harmful, but the idea that this approach inherently reflects "liberal leanings" (Siker's claim) ignores how plenty of liberals reject homophobia without trying to enlist and sanitize the Bible as support.
2. I disagree with the Innocent Paul claim as Vines postulated
It is true that Greek, Roman, and Jewish sources do not often feature something resembling "a committed loving queer sexual relationship," but this is where confusion often sets in; there must be a distinction between
According to dominant ideals, powerful men were supposed to actively penetrate those below themselves on the social and gender hierarchy; a man who delighted in being penetrated by another man was by relative definition effeminate, and thus not to be celebrated. Women loving and sexually engaging with other women meant they weren't being used by (the right) men, and thus Greek and Roman writers tended to disparage, ridicule, and reframe female homoeroticism.
But our texts aren't direct sociological data, they reflect and think with dominant sexual ideologies, which by definition erased/reframed divergent sexual and gender expressions. This is why the likes of Amy Richlin,[1] Bernadette Brooten,[2] Deborah Kamen and Sarah Levin-Richardson,[3] and Jimmy Hoke**[4]** have argued that even though our sources erase, reframe, and distort people who liked any non-normative sex and relationships in Mediterranean antiquity, they still existed.
Bottom line: Writers like Paul could certainly have been aware of queer sexualities and relationships that were not enslaved prostitution or pederasty. Folks like Vines and Siker unintentionally reinscribe the association between homoeroticism and pedophilia/sexual violence.
For what it's worth, everyone should read Richlin's article from 30 years ago. Doesn't matter whether you agree with all of her arguments, it's brilliant scholarship.
3. Corpus point of view
There's a related debate about whether our texts even have a category for something like sexual orientation or simply imagine sex via other grids like active vs. passive/penetrator vs. penetrated (e.g., see Craig Williams' excellent sketch of these paradigms in Roman literature**[5]**).
The most common scholarly opinion in terms of Greco-Roman antiquity gender-sex studies is that our sources don't reflect ideas like sexual orientation, so orientational categories aren't historically helpful for reading our texts.
Other scholars like Richlin and Brooten have critiqued these positions, though they still forcefully argue that our sources thought with overtly hierarchical patriarchal ideologies about sex, like penetrator and penetrated. This final point is something on which Richlin is often misrepresented, which is bizarre since she wrote one of the classic books for understanding such dominant sexual ideologies.[6]
4. Paul Romana
Romans 1:18-32's basic point is that Paul discussed the total moral failure of Gentiles by sketching their (feminizing) descent into being dominated by their passions, one of the resultant illustrations of the Gentiles being their domination by their passions through transgressing the gendered order, exemplified by Gentile men losing sexual control of "their women" (i.e., these men are failed men from this angle) and each other in 1:26-27 - an inversion of the normative sexual order.
Paul treated male-male anal penetration as a straight illustration of Gentile corruption and domination by their passions. It's part of his grander point that Gentiles became (effeminately) enslaved by their passions (see Stanley Stowers' classic articulation of this decline-of-civilization reading of Rom 1:18-32**[7]**).
The key issue here is that there's no literary reason to think he only had in mind enslaved prostitution or pederasty, ANY male-male anal penetration upended the normative gender order. If anything, he might have indicated elsewhere that free men penetrating (raping) their slaves (gender irrelevant) was okay since that use of slaves was acceptable within many moral schemes; Paul never objected to it, and some passages potentially align with treating enslaved humans as legitimate non-marriage sexual outlets (e.g., as argued by Jennifer Glancy**[8]** regarding 1 Thess 4:4's εἰδέναι ἕκαστον ὑμῶν τὸ ἑαυτοῦ σκεῦος κτᾶσθαι("that each of you know his own vessel to possess in sanctification and honor")).
5. Linguistic flexibility
There's no reason to limit οὔτε μαλακοὶ οὔτε ἀρσενοκοῖται of 1 Cor 6:9 to prostitution; "malakos" means "soft"/"effeminate." In Greek texts, it often does refer to men who are penetrated sexually - obviously effeminizing - but a man who was unrestrained or excessive in his penetrating of women is likewise an example of "effeminate" in Greek sources.
ἀρσενοκοίτης's meaning remains debated, but the etymological game of making it "man-bedders" is problematic; rather than get bogged down in this lexical discussion, the larger point regarding Siker is, again, that the issue of whether "committed same-sex relationships" are in view is irrelevant.
Paul listed effeminate Gentiles as those who will not inherit the kingdom of God; a male prostitute is by definition effeminate for these discourses, but so would a man in a "committed same-sex relationship" who is anally penetrated.
6. Futility
I don't get why "liberal-leaning" scholars think they can salvage a moral Bible by handwaving Paul's (what we can redescribe as) homophobia, even if all of Siker's claims were true, Paul's logic is entirely premised on reprehensibly misogynist gender ideologies that animate his other arguments, so even trying to save the dude from Those Two Bad Verses leaves you with the steaming animal manure that is said premise.
Hope this helps!

2024.05.16 11:13 Kaffeepause29 Need advice on building a new pc in 2024

Hi everyone,
I would like to send my current PC built in 2015 into a well-deserved retirement and need some advice on building a new PC, that will ideally last another decade.
My budget is between 1000 to 1500 €. I live in Germany and I usually buy my pc parts on Mindfactory.
My current PC specs are:
What I don't need for my next PC build:
What I want to do with the new PC build:
I was thinking about buying an AMD CPU (7600/x for ~170€ or 7800X3D for ~329€) and an Nvidia GPU (RTX 4060 for 299€ or RTX 4070 Super for ~610€), which both would fit into my budget range.
Which pc parts would you recommend me especially for the CPU and GPU?

2024.05.16 10:33 Jennifer-Star109 I’m am the problem?

He has 1 million in cash in the bank, and probably another million in investments. He gives me $500 a month. I have no access to cash other than that. Which is to cover any expenses that he doesn’t approve of. Which is mostly everything that doesn’t involve him or the house. I wait for him to go grocery shopping because I can’t afford to. We have 1 kid together (12yr old) I have 2 kids from a previous marriage that I support on my own. They are adults now 20/21 but still need help occasionally. Also I accrued debt because I never felt I had enough to cover mine and the kids needs. So my monthly allowance goes to paying that and nothing else. He pays for me to get my nails done 1 time a month. That makes me feel human, and normal. Working outside the home is not an option. We moved to another country I don’t speak the language, and the visa we are on won’t allow me to work. Over the years when we lived in the states I worked random jobs here and there, but felt such a deficit I would spend it all on clothes, shoes, hair cuts, and things for the kids, birthdays etc. So I didn’t save up or if I did it would dwindle over time. He never liked me working outside the home was always negative so the stress would make me quit my job. So is he right am I just irresponsible with $ so I don’t deserve access to any or are my friends and family right and he’s just trying to control me..?

2024.05.16 10:26 Kaffeepause29 Need advice on building a new pc in 2024

Hi everyone,
I would like to send my current PC built in 2015 into a well-deserved retirement and need some advice on building a new PC, that will ideally last another decade.
My budget is between 1000 to 1500 €.
My current PC specs are:
What I want to do with the new PC build:
I was thinking about buying an AMD CPU (7600/x for ~170€ or 7800X3D for ~329€) and an Nvidia GPU (RTX 4060 for 299€ or RTX 4070 Super for ~610€), which both would fit into my budget range.
Which pc parts would you recommend me especially for the CPU and GPU?

Rehoming an Amazing Goldendoodle
Hello, we’ve had the opportunity of welcoming this sweet boy into our home, but we underestimated how much time it would take to give him the love and attention he deserves. We’re looking to rehome him to a family that has the time and patience he deserves.
Whiskey is 14 weeks old (born February 2nd, 2024). He knows the sit, stand, lay down, eat, stay, come, down (used when he’s on surfaces he’s not supposed to), drop it, and shake commands. He’s a brilliant dog. Each command took less than 10 tries to teach him, and he is also responsive to gestures (e.g. you can point and say “come,” and he will come to where you are pointing).
Whiskey is about 21 lbs at the time of writing this, and he will grow up to be at least 65 lbs (check a dog calculator to get a more accurate measure). He’s full of life, and has a colorful personality. He is a puppy, so he will teeth and do other puppy things.
We’ve been very meticulous in researching, so we’re willing to provide any information that’ll help you and him settle in. An ideal candidate would:
  • Be able to not leave him alone for more than 4 hours a day
  • Have a big enough back yard for him to run around in (nice to have)
  • Have enough money to continue feeding him Ollie (nice to have)
  • Have experience with dogs
  • Live in a region with mild summers
  • Work from home (nice to have)
  • Have other dogs (nice to have)
The above desired qualities are not a hard-and-fast set of requirements. If you think you would be a good match, please message me or ask questions below.
I wouldn’t ask for more than $500.00. I’m located in San Jose, CA, but I am willing to fly anywhere in the US to rehome him to a loving family. The flight would also be free of charge to you (unless you’re willing to pay 🙂). We have plenty of toys and supplies, so if you can drive out or if you’re close enough to meet us in the middle, then we will give you all of it.
Thank you!

2024.05.16 07:58 Jazzlike-Mammoth-167 Fear of praise/acknowledgment

Hi people,
Well, last week, I was chosen for the largest scholarship my college offers ($10,000 for any school of my choosing for my bachelor's), and I’m freaking out in a bad way.
I go to an in-person college but take all of my classes online due to my extreme anxiety. I have a 4.0, am head of the newspaper, volunteer to several local organizations, and am second in command at my company, all from the comfort of my bed/couch and laptop.
I am so uncomfortable receiving this acknowledgment. I don’t feel like I deserve it; I feel like a fraud. I have never been recognized for anything. Now they’re telling me I have to record a video to share with the committee telling them about myself, get headshots, attend meetings and conferences, and perform a 2-3 minute speech at the ceremony. That is so not me. I don’t like people looking at me. I don’t even go to the grocery store - I make my husband go, or I order pickup!
What do I do? Do I turn down the scholarship because there’s no way in hell I can do what they’re asking of me? But I could really use the money. This is making me not even want to continue my education. I don’t want this attention. It’s making me so overwhelmed and uncomfortable. I wish I could just be normal and grateful like anyone else would be in this situation, but I just can’t.

2024.05.16 07:35 naji_088 i got suspended from university and haven’t told my parents yet.

So I graduated in 2023 from a majority white area in upper-middle-class suburbia GA. Everyone around here acts super high class and is tight strung and rich and stuck up. I’m mixed and adopted so I know that I’m spoiled and that I have way more than I deserve. I graduated with honors from high school and began attending a little women’s college on a half academic, half athletic scholarship. I studied nursing and psychology (a double major)
First semester starts and I’m doing great. Around midterms is when everything went downhill. Because it was the beginning of basketball season, I was struggling to juggle both school and grades, and I was out partying a lot more than I should’ve been (though granted, i’m in COLLEGE, but i was kinda sheltered at home and took advantage of the freedom). I ended up tanking most of my midterms and not being able to play basketball for the rest of the semester. I failed 2 classes and was put on ‘academic probation’ by the school. It doesn’t go on your record or anything, it’s just so the school can kick you out before you mess up their stats. Second semester goes by in a flash and I’m doing decently, but I end up having to drop a class and take another online. My grandpa died unexpectedly right before midterms and I tanked my only 2. I go into a depression deeper than I have in a minute and fail both my classes.
The school year ended and now i’m home, and the other day I got an email explaining my probationary period has ended and because I failed to keep my GPA above a 3.0 I’ve lost my scholarship and have been put on academic suspension. I appealed to it by sending an email and explaining my situation and failure to pass my classes, but i won’t get an answer back til the end of the month.
I hated that school anyways and want to go to a technical school to be an EMT, but i did enjoy my time there and will miss my friends.
my family can pay for me to go to a technical or community college so i can get my prerequisite classes done, but my sister is graduating in may and is attending my college in the fall. my mom thinks we’ll be going there together.
i don’t know how to tell them how ive failed. i wish i could go back and tell myself, “hey. just get up for class. this ONE TIME.” or forced myself to study harder. i know i did the best i could at the time, but it still is a horrible feeling to see myself turn into this after i’ve done better in the past.
TL;DR : i failed majority of my classes and lost a ton of scholarship money by getting suspended for bad grades.
my mom thinks i’m going back next semester with my sister and i haven’t told her yet that i’ve disappointed her.

2024.05.16 07:16 Ur_Anemone Taylor Swift and the emptiness of ‘female rage’

Taylor Swift and the emptiness of ‘female rage’
After kicking off the European leg of her Eras tour, the musician trademarked the phrase ‘Female Rage: The Musical’. But Swift’s corporate-friendly liberal feminism is something we should rage against, not with…
Both Swift and the phrase ‘female rage’ have become synonymous with the word cringe as they have become associated with empty liberal feminist politics. Swift has been calling herself a feminist since 2014, telling the Guardian that she’s a feminist because “women deserve to have the same rights as men”. It wasn’t until Swift started to re-record and re-release her albums that the media began to praise her for “stepping into a feminist identity” by reclaiming her first six albums after they were acquired by Scooter Braun in 2019.
But as Hannah Williams asserts in her viral article on Swift for the New Statesman, “Swift’s re-recordings could have been a demand for collective change [in the music industry], but in reality, they seem like little more than an exercise in egotism and greed, repackaged as ‘empowerment’”. She continues: “The blazing light of her moral crusade is dimmed considerably when you look at the myriad ways Swift profits off the exercise…Swift’s feminism never goes beyond protecting, defending and serving herself.
Similarly, ‘female rage’ or ‘good for her’ media became popular in film and television post #MeToo…Within these pieces of media, women fought back against patriarchal domination, killing their abusers and acting outside of traditional feminine ideals. Through their unfiltered rage, they would release all the pent-up fury they’d acquired from living under patriarchy, a system that forces them to keep that anger hidden to ensure they are performing their gender identity correctly.
There is merit to media like this, as author and video essayist Alice Cappelle explains in her video ‘Why female rage is here to stay.’ “Female characters [in the media] are becoming increasingly more complex”, she asserts. “We’re progressively stepping away from the innocent woman versus strong woman binary to explore what it means to be an average woman.”
As important as this representation is in media, ‘female rage’ starts to feel like an empty political slogan that fails to translate into the real world. Those who watch programs like Big Little Lies can understand why Celeste (Nicole Kidman) and the other women of the show would kill wife-beater and rapist Perry…but can’t understand why those suffering under colonialism and displacement would want to fight back against their oppressors. Not only can they not understand it, it doesn’t have any space within their so-called ‘feminist’ practice. Those oppressed and marginalised are only allowed to express anger in fiction, and still it is often white, straight women who are praised for expressing said anger. Through this understanding, ‘female rage’, as a genre, starts to lose its edge and importance within media.
Female rage does not have to be a political or constructive tool…Women’s feelings do not always have to be useful. Still, that argument becomes harder and harder to reckon with when there are complete abortion bans in 14 US states, when pregnant women in Gaza are forced to give birth without basic supplies, and when Israel has imprisoned hundreds of Palestinian women across the occupied Palestinian territory. Beyond women, this is also happening to all of those in Gaza, and this should not only make us angry, it should make us act.
Women’s anger, and all those who are treated unjustly, has historically led to practical political action. “My response to racism is anger,” writes Audre Lorde in her poignant essay on the subject ‘The Uses of Anger: Women Responding to Racism’ from 1980. “I have lived with that anger, ignoring it, feeding upon it, learning to use it before it laid my visions to waste… Anger is loaded with information and energy.” The rage Swift speaks of is not loaded with information and energy. While her songs may empower some young women, empowerment rarely changes the material conditions of those suffering worldwide.
At the end of the day, Swift is a billionaire continuously trying to sell her fans corporate-friendly liberal feminism with the sole purpose of strengthening her bank account. We should be raging against greedy capitalists, not with them.

2024.05.16 07:01 EUGsk8rBoi42p "Just check out Eugene’s Reddit section any day, but don’t say I didn’t warn you."

Admitting we have a problem is the first step in solving it! Author is a Eugenean talking about her experience with rising crime in the city, never saw this story but hey, still relevant today. Found this little gem by random chance. Title is a hopefully relatable quote from the article. You can agree or disagree with the author, but it's actually pretty well written with sources included. (just including the whole article, for people who don't want to click links!)

I Caught Two Men Stealing From My Home. The Aftermath Was Absurd—and All Too Typical.

This experience crystallized Oregon’s deeper problems.

BY REBECCA SCHUMANJUNE 21, 20225:40 AM
Typically, guys wearing power-company vests don’t leave the houses they’re working on laden down with backpacks—let alone power tools, a scooter, and a Nintendo Switch. But that was the scene I happened upon at 6:30 p.m. on a Tuesday in mid-April when I puttered into my driveway in Eugene, Oregon, my 7-year-old ensconced in the back seat.
For a second, my brain tried to normalize the incident: This is just my daughter’s dad stopping by—except there are two of him, and they’re dressed as electricians for some reason? Then, a second later, everything whooshed into place: Oh, wait, I’m being robbed. Or, rather, I was being burgled. I would get reminded of this distinction later, when I made the dubious choice to join the chorus of aggrieved buttinskies on Nextdoor, where my well-meaning post to warn the neighborhood would turn me into an accidental vigilante hero for a day.
Unfortunately, it’s true: My reaction to this burgle was the lived-out fantasy of many who have been on the business end of a property crime. As the two goons took off on foot down my street, I went into fight-or-flight mode—and I chose fight.
“Well,” I said to my confused child, “let’s go see if we can get our stuff back.”
I peeled my 2005 Subaru back onto the street and easily overtook my two targets, who then hurtled themselves into an alley, whereupon I cornered one by the driver’s side window as the other made haste across the adjacent parking lot.
“Just give it back, bro!” I yelled out my window. “Just give it back! I’m a single mom! Just give it back.”
I repeated this until either I reminded him too much of his meanest teacher or he realized he’d been caught in broad daylight. “Fine,” he said. “Just fucking take it.”
He shoved a backpack through my driver’s side window. Inside it was both my laptops and my daughter’s iPad from school. Back at home, I would discover these guys had used channel lock pliers to force open the back door, but that the general chaos of my home had prevented them from locating my passport, jewelry, or sole item of irreplaceable value: the Montblanc fountain pen that my father, who died in a bicycle accident two years ago, had gotten for his law school graduation. My cat was unfazed.
I can honestly tell you that this little caper of mine was thrilling and deeply satisfying. It was also the exact wrong thing to do. Even this fanatical open-carry gun website implores: “Don’t chase criminals.” What if these two dipsticks had been armed? As unlikely as that was—property crime in my town is often driven by addiction, and weapons are worth money, which can buy drugs—I put myself and my child in potential danger. And for what? Three grand worth of electronics. As any reputable expert will tell you, you’re never to give chase to a thief, because human life is not worth possessions. As much as I admit to enjoying being called a “badass” by everyone I told this story, plus the listeners of KLCC Oregon, I should not have done this.
I did call the police, on the nonemergency line, because the dudes were long gone and nobody was hurt. I declined the dispatcher’s offer to send two officers to fingerprint a bunch of stuff I’d already touched. At best, that would have just added two more sets of prints to my town’s burgeoning roster of perennially at-large property criminals.
There are larger issues here, issues much more important than my would-be cool story. First, it’s an example of how in Eugene, small-scale property crime is now de facto legal. It is largely nonviolent, so it’s rarely seen as worth police resources to track down the goods. At the same time, it is so prevalent that any time one vest-wearing bozo gets nabbed, three more spring up in his place. This was my house’s second break-in in six months, and my fourth property crime total in the three years I’ve lived here as an adult. Eugene is my hometown, so I can also add the four times my childhood house, where my mother still lives, has been burgled since the early 2000s. When I was little, we left our front door unlocked so regularly that I wasn’t aware front doors had locks on them until I was much older. By the time I turned 30, however, every door in my parents’ house had been pried open at least once. (“Time to finally get that alarm system!” said my dad for three straight decades.)
Still, it’s a mistake to treat this trend solely as a vexing crime problem. Eugene’s descent into its property crime epidemic has been concurrent, unsurprisingly, with two addiction epidemics: First, the methamphetamine nightmare of the 1990s—when pseudoephedrine pills were still unregulatedhit Oregon and other Western states particularly hard. That wave segued all too naturally into the opioid and fentanyl crisis of the present. Meanwhile, not only did meth never really leave, but its use in Oregon also surged with the pandemic, with three Oregonians per day currently dying a drug-related death.
Since our conversation was necessarily brief, I don’t know the housing or drug situation of the guys who broke into my place. But local statistics point to them as two more casualties of these plagues. (Granted, those statistics are from nearby Portland, and they are police-sourced, so take them how you wish.)
For all the ambivalent empathy that the opioid epidemic has engendered, the local property crime scourge has set off a fierce public backlash. My incident brought out an unsurprising chorus of bloodlust on Nextdoor and elsewhere, when I shared it because I wanted to give my immediate neighbors a heads-up: “You should have kicked their asses,” they wrote. “We need to rise up and defend our property.
This town’s petty crime is often attributed, at least in the national conservative press, to our West Coast government’s decision to temporarily allow urban camping during the pandemic. (That policy has now officially ended, for what it’s worth.) Towns like mine have often been characterized in the popular imagination as unlivable crime-addled hellholes. I will be the first to admit that our tent cities are sometimes blatant open-air drug markets, but this is the case even as our property values inflate to absurd proportions—and our crime is actually on the decline. Still, Oregonians like me currently have about a 2.7 percent chance of being burgled, which, at almost 30 percent higher than the national average, is very high. I learned very efficiently how anecdotes like mine get around (I can’t help it if I’m a dynamic storyteller!) and attract the righteous indignation of other former victims, so many often feel, incorrectly, like we few honest vanguards are awash in a sea of riffraff.
This atmosphere, in turn, inspires my locality’s equally unreasonable political extremists to put forth and exacerbate their own untenable solutions. Even in a hyperpolarized American environment, Oregon is more polarized than most. For decades, our liberal enclaves have made Portlandia look understated, while our conservative areas make Texas’ look progressive.
For example, during the heyday of Eugene’s recently dismantled and infamous Washington Jefferson Park tent city, a larger break-in at a bicycle store was traced at least partially back to the encampment. The police swept the tents and made a flurry of arrests. Some of the bikes were found. This resulted in part in outrage over using resources to hassle the city’s most impoverished residents: “A stolen bike, yes, that sucks,” an advocate for the unhoused told a local news outlet. “But what are your priorities? And I’m sorry, but a stolen bike isn’t the priority.”
Well, trust me, in this town, it definitely isn’t. Recovering those bikes was an anomaly; in Eugene, most of these burglaries go unsolved. In fact, 87 percent of burglaries in the whole country do, too. The get-tough-on-property-crime proponents assert that statistically, this sends a message that stealing is fair game, and sure, that is a message I do not condone. But I also agree with a somewhat less rabid version of the opposing view: Property is replaceable, these crimes are nonviolent, and everyone currently rifling through houses and dealing drugs out of tents in my town is human. They deserve a chance to get their lives on track.
So, what should be the town’s priority? Fixing the addiction epidemics is a perilously long way away from happening, for reasons that are as polarizing as addiction’s consequences. In the sobering and excellent Dopesick, author Beth Macy goes into painfully exacting detail about opioids’ near-inescapable hold on the human brain. Macy argues that the true way out of this epidemic is “low-barrier treatment,” which includes supportive housing and medical interventions such as safe injection supplies, fentanyl testing strips, buprenorphine access, and supervised consumption sites. All of these options, however, are a tough sell even in a “progressive” town like Eugene, where supervised consumption sites are what NIMBY nightmares are made of, and low-barrier treatment can run up against deeply held moral stigma: Gas is $5 a gallon, and my taxes are going to some junkie?
In the meantime, while some admirably advocate and vote and wait for those breakthroughs, what should we do about the burglaries themselves? Should we pursue more law enforcement, or more compassion toward the burglars? More arrests that allegedly might deter this, or policies that might alleviate income inequality? Does—as approximately 83 percent of the suggestions from my Nextdoor thread contended—every house in town need a tripwire that handcuffs trespassers on sight? Or should all businesses be taxed at 500 percent, and the proceeds used to furnish every fentanyl dealer in town with a nice apartment and mad cash? The debate has degenerated such that these are the sorts of cartoonish positions each side believes they’re fighting—and, in fact, are the only available choices. Just check out Eugene’s Reddit section any day, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.
The actual blight on small American towns like mine isn’t property crime. It’s that any tenable solution to it has been swallowed up into a churning abyss of extremism and perceived counterextremism. No one seems to have a convincing answer to the most basic question: So what should we do? What should I do?
Burglaries don’t have to be largely unsolvable, and more property criminals could be apprehended. But while I don’t want those dudes or any of their buddies to come back to my house, I also don’t want them in an American prison, where their “rehabilitation” will consist largely of learning better ways to commit even bigger crimes when they get out, and their options for alternative forms of acquiring money will be even more limited than they are now. Lacking any meaningful restorative justice program for petty thieves in my town (which would, in turn, necessitate locating and apprehending them), I decided my own problems could be solved, for now, with a padlock on my back gate.
And then, not long after the break-in, a Nintendo Switch appeared on my town’s Craigslist. Its included components and color combination were identical to the set stolen from my house. I debated, briefly, bringing my vigilante justice alter ego Super Annoying out of retirement, answering the ad and showing up to shrill my wrongdoers into returning what was mine. But this time, I thought better of it. My life is not worth much, but it’s probably worth more than Mario Kart. I can only hope the console’s new owners enjoy it as much as my daughter did—at least until someone steals it again.

2024.05.16 06:32 Savings_Permit7872 A Love Letter to Columbia University

Shortly before a final paper with pre-assigned topics was due for one of my last courses at Columbia University, our professor sent us an email telling us to forego the previous parameters of the essay, and to instead write about the events that had occurred not even forty-eight hours earlier, as well as our reflections on them, to be done in any manner we chose. Here is a very lightly revised version of what I submitted: read it, ignore it, upvote it, downvote it, hate it, love it.
I am prefacing this essay by stating that it is the culmination of several intense emotions that I have been dealing with over the last few weeks, more specifically, the last several days. It is a free-form expression of the many things occupying my mind, and, as such, it may seem overwhelming or disjointed. Nevertheless, I will do my best to convey my feelings into something representative of my beliefs, and my time at this institution.
My time at Columbia University has been bookended in an almost comically bad way; it started with Zoom classes during the COVID-19 pandemic, and now it ends with Zoom final exams due to the lockdown of Columbia’s campus after protests regarding the Israel – Palestine conflict reached a fever pitch not just within Morningside Campus, but the international stage. My classmates and I missed in-person orientation, and now, given recent developments, we will not have a University Commencement, a fact I found out not from Columbia, but a New York Times alert, somehow lowering my opinion of this administration’s handling of recent events even more. While the circumstances around my time at Columbia have now both begun and finished in the same manner, I am proud to say that I have not. I do not mean that Columbia has simply made me a better writer, a more critical thinker, or more well read, although it certainly has done those things, sometimes forcing me to when I was not particularly in the mood to do so, but those improvements pale in comparison to the maturity and empathy my time at this university has given me.
When the decision to transition to remote learning during the Spring 2020 semester was made, occurring only a short time after I had received my acceptance letter (email), my first thought was how the pandemic would affect my transfer from community college to Columbia in September. Admittedly, this was a selfish perspective, considering the tremendous challenges that many would endure during the ensuing lockdowns and other upheavals of life. My concerns were solely focused on myself because I was on a simple track to graduate, place my degree on my resumé, and continue my trajectory of military service to college to employment, leaving little else to consideration, to include other people who were not in my immediate circle. Sitting here now, two weeks from graduation, with a job at a Fortune 500 company lined up, I should be happy, with the plans I had made years ago coming to fruition. Yet I cannot help feeling a sense of sadness and concern for the school I have spent years of my life at, and for the world as a whole.
James Hatch, a former member of the United States’s elite Naval Special Warfare Development Group, or DEVGRU, for short, more commonly known by its nickname, Seal Team Six, famous for its involvement in the killing of Osama Bin Laden and the rescue of the Maersk Alabama Captain Richard Phillips from pirates, amongst other things, spent over twenty years in the military. After being wounded on a mission to rescue American serviceman sergeant Bowe Bergdahl from enemy forces, he was medically discharged, and would eventually attend Yale University. While there, he wrote a piece titled My Semester with the Snowflakes (please give this a read, it will help people who have never been in the military understand its culture, along with some of the challenges veterans face when transitioning to college), where he details his initial discomfort with being in a vastly different environment than the military, surrounded by individuals who possessed opinions and beliefs contrary to the ones he was accustomed to. He recalls witnessing a student protest the country he spent over two decades serving by coating her hand in red paint, and leaving a palm print on an American flag, and details his shock when a classmate of his explained to him what a “safe space” was, as well as his pride when he began to understand the nuances of life both inside and outside of the nation he dedicated twenty-six years to.
I can relate to Mr. Hatch, (despite my service paling in comparison to his, as well as the fact that Columbia is far superior to Yale), because, like his friends who make fun of him for attending college with a bunch of “snowflakes,” mine do the same. More significantly, however, his personal growth during his time at school is something that I have experienced myself. When I started at Columbia, I did not even know which major I would choose, and was largely lost in a world very different than the one I had come from. Despite this, I made the decision to avoid communities such as MilVets and the students who made it very clear that they came from a military background, with their style of dress and demeanor, not because those organizations and individuals are a detriment; I know for a fact that MilVets has helped countless students succeed at Columbia and beyond, and the veterans that I have relationships with are all phenomenal people, but because I wanted to pressure myself into being exposed to something different. I was uncomfortable at first, but this turned out to be the right decision. I learned as much from simply talking to people whom I would normally never converse with about topics and ideas that I had never encountered as I did during classes about great works of art, polar and Cartesian coordinates, literature, astronomy, the list goes on.
If the protests about the Israel – Palestine conflict had occurred when I first started at Columbia, I would have been frustrated by the students taking up space, forcing us to be funneled on to campus by restricted access points and identification checks. Likely irritated by the disturbance of the quiet during finals season, I would have agreed with the people who called for students to simply focus on their assignments and stop inconveniencing others by shouting about something occurring on the other side of the world. Instead, I decided to learn about the conflict, educating myself about both sides of a war that has roots extending back millennia. While Columbia University did not agree to the demands of the protestors, they achieved something else they surely desired, reaching a goal they did not state to President Shafik and her advisors: they brought attention to their cause by educating at least one additional person about it.
After reading, talking to people, listening to input from students within various classes, and understanding that things such as the intertwined nature of financial workings, as well as conflicts not just in the Middle East, but all over the world, are a level of complexity that baffles some of the most brilliant minds of ours and previous generations, I will leave my thoughts about Israel and Palestine separate from this paper. I recognize that it is important to choose a side, as remaining impartial helps no one. However, when every news agency, group and individual makes their voice heard, satirical sources such as The Onion make these kind of posts, or Adult Swim’s Rick, the nihilistic, narcissistic, psychopathic, misanthropic lead character from the series Rick and Morty, addresses the conflict in this manner, I feel that it is better to relegate myself to a much smaller part of this debate, namely the occurrences on Columbia University’s Morningside Campus.
During basic training for the United States Army, a sense of brotherhood and camaraderie is hammered into recruits’ identities. When you graduate and are assigned to a unit, one where you could be thousands of miles from home on the opposite side of the country, or even in a completely different country, serving on one of the international bases, approaching someone who you have never met before is easy. Talking to them about shared experiences and stories you have in common, and the bonding that occurs, is the product of an indoctrination process and lifestyle that has existed longer than any of us have been alive, and is proof of its effectiveness. This sense of familiarity tends to continue even when one leaves the military. The Veterans of Foreign Wars community is a place for prior servicemembers of all conflicts to share a drink, a laugh, and sometimes a tear. When I go to the Veterans Administration Hospital for periodic check-ups or the occasional injury, men and woman wearing hats commemorating their service during Vietnam waiting for their appointments greet me with a smile and a handshake, as if we have known each other for years. While working at a golf club’s greens department before I transferred to Columbia from community college, a coworker of mine who had served in the Gulf War had heard from our supervisor that I had been in the Army, and he introduced himself to me on my first day, before anyone else, telling me that if I needed anything, I only had to ask. This camaraderie has expanded to encompass not just veterans, but first responders such as firemen, EMT’s, and the police as well.
Underneath the picture on my driver’s license, the word “veteran” is emblazoned next to a star, written in bright red text and all capital letters. I know for a fact that this one-and-a-half-inch indicator has helped me during interactions with law enforcement on multiple occasions. Only earlier this semester, during Presidents’ Day weekend, I went upstate to spend time with my family. While driving back, in an effort to make the seven-hour trip at a reasonable time, I was stopped for going twenty miles-per-hour over the speed limit. The officer who pulled me over, initially reserved, became noticeably more friendly when I handed him my license and registration. Ultimately, he gave me what amounted to a parking ticket for my actions, rather than the point-incurring, heavily fined moving violation he could have charged me with.
The ‘Thin Blue Line,’ as it is known, is a reference to the idea that the police are the barrier between law abiding citizens and criminals, order and chaos. The most common representation of this concept is a black-and-white American flag, with a single blue line in the place where a red or white stripe would normally be. This style has been expanded to include numerous other colors representing other first-responders: green for the military, red and white no longer to be interpreted as the traditional stripes of the American flag, but instead meant to represent the fire department and paramedics, and even grey for corrections officers. Seeing the appropriation of one of the most iconic symbols in the world, one that flies above the White House, schools, homes, national and international events, and even the Moon, I can say, as someone who has been unwillingly entangled within that appropriation, is nothing short of terrifying.
The fact that these entities and their supporters have literally sewn themselves into the fabric of the symbol of our nation makes one think that there is little room for the countless other occupations, aspects and people that make up this country. The idea of the police being the sole protectors of our society is patently absurd, and all one must do is point out the many instances of police brutality occurring over the years to refute it. I find myself thinking of how much power the officer who stopped me just three months ago had over me. Initially, I was happy that I had received a slap on the wrist, but recently I have found myself wondering what if my license did not state that I was a veteran, would he have charged me with a ticket that would have had much more serious implications? What if he was simply having a bad day, and he decided he did not like the look of me, or the color of my car, and I was the one who he ultimately decided to vent his frustrations on? This traffic infraction, an incredibly small incident compared to all the turmoil in the world, one that involves two strangers, supposedly bonded by our professions, on the side of a quiet, New York highway, serves as a metaphor to me, reminding me of the power structures at play on a much larger scale.
On April 22nd, 2024, I received this email, one of the many Clery Crime Alerts that students are automatically sent. An affiliate of Columbia University had their car stolen at gunpoint by two masked men on Claremont Avenue, not even a five-minute walk from campus. I skimmed the report, and almost immediately forgot about it, recognizing that crime is an inevitability in major cities, and that I needed to start my commute to school. Days later, on the night of April 30th, 2024, I received another email from Columbia, containing one of the most ominous messages I had ever seen, one that put the kind of fear in my heart that not even the alert of an armed carjacking could. Columbia’s Emergency Management Operations Team, offering no explanations, specifications, or even a greeting or sign-off, wrote in bold letters these three sentences: “Shelter in place for your safety due to heightened activity on the Morningside campus. Non-compliance may result in disciplinary action. Avoid the area until further notice.” Due to the protests on campus during recent weeks, President Shafik testifying before Congress, Columbia’s role as one of the main catalysts for student protests around the country, and the occupation of Hamilton Hall occurring in the earlier hours of that day, it was not hard to figure out what the email was referencing. Over the next several hours, I followed news agencies, remained glued to the Columbia subreddit, and listened to WKCR, in awe of these eighteen- to twenty-two-year-old students putting themselves at risk to deliver on the ground, accurate, unbiased coverage of one of the most significant events in the school’s history.
While tracking the events from multiple perspectives, to include the social media accounts of those near and on campus live streaming them, I held out hope that the university would make good on their promise from several days earlier to not invite the NYPD back, but a frightening picture began to unfold, one that I was intimately familiar with. One WKCR reporter stated that 114th street had so many officers on it that he could not see the asphalt of the road beneath them, and I knew that the staging area the NYPD had chosen was one of the best routes for moving towards what the military, and presumably law enforcement, would call an ‘objective.’ The officers cleared the smaller ‘objective,’ the largely unoccupied tents in front of Butler, and then moved towards Hamilton Hall, ordering even those not associated with its occupation to disperse, raising my stress levels and likely those of others, as it is rarely a good sign when police do not want their actions recorded and archived. After the initial entry to campus and clearing of areas and people in the immediate vicinity of Hamilton Hall, came the Long-Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD, a device that makes a megaphone sound like a whisper, and one known for its crowd-control potential, capable of producing sounds loud enough to cause damage to ear-drums, nausea, and headaches, ordering individuals to clear away. The NYPD began its execution of tactics in a way that my fellow soldiers and I used to rehearse, tactics I never dreamed that I would witness outside of the military, and certainly not by police officers who vastly outnumbered unarmed students on their own campus. The NYPD created a perimeter, or a ‘second layer of security’ to both provide reinforcements for the officers entering the building, and to prevent the fleeing of what are called ‘squirters,’ or individuals who attempt to escape the building after the raid begins. While the ‘breach’ team moved towards the front doors, using tools from a ‘hooligan kit,’ such as bolt cutters, hand-held battering rams and crowbars, a siege machine was brought in to allow access from a window; when taking over a building, the idea is to enter it from as many different directions as possible to better disorient and overwhelm its occupants. Flash-bang grenades, described as non-lethal, but known to have harmful effects, were thrown inside, presumably before entering any room, hallway, or otherwise enclosed area to minimize the resistance of anyone unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of what can only be described as an assault on the visual and auditory senses. According to the Manhattan District Attorney, one of the officers inside Hamilton Hall had what is called in the military a “negligent discharge,” meaning his firearm went off unintentionally. While no one was hurt, the question remains why at least one, and more likely, numerous other officers were carrying guns loaded with live ammunition in the first place, when they so drastically outmatched the protestors in numbers and equipment. Additionally, a negligent discharge is an act of incompetence that would result in an active-duty soldier facing serious consequences, and derision from his peers. So far, the officer remains defended by his coworkers, and unpunished by his superiors.
As all this unfolded, I communicated with my friends from the past and present. My friends from the military checked on me to ensure that I was okay, as did my friends from school. The difference in how they viewed these events highlights what I believe is the change in myself that I stated I am most proud of at the beginning of this paper. My friends from the military were commenting that the assertion of order and control by way of militarized tactics was necessary, not concerning themselves with the human toll and destruction of trust that came along with it. Conversely, my schoolmates lamented the brutality and overstepping of boundaries that the NYPD and Columbia’s administration committed, one that turned a place meant to be a beacon of free speech, expression, and ideas, into what is now a police-state with strict control over who enters it.
My education inside and outside the classroom at this institution has challenged, thrilled, and changed me. Sitting here now, at the end of this paper, the end of the semester, and the end of my time at Columbia University, I am left feeling confused and sad regarding recent events, but also hopeful for the future. I know from experience that the students, teachers, and culture of this school have the power to encourage critical thinking and initiate personal growth. If it did those things for me, surely it can do the same for others

2024.05.16 04:44 1quirky1 [Landlord US-VA] First time ever as a landlord, just one unit. How can I get tax planning advice that doesn't cost thousands? This expense would be more appropriate if I had more properties.

I got a couple of quotes nearby in Northern Virginia - HCOL area. One wanted $1,000 for non-binding advice that I would have to run by a lawyer. Another wanted $2,500 for tax advice and preparing my return. Paying these rates will negate any tax advantage I may gain - I would be better off unoptimized.
I just need advice to get me on the right track - do it right, stay out of trouble, not leave anything big on the table. I can't learn this the hard way because there likely won't be a next time.
The lone property:
I paid cash for a 3BR condo in a college town to provide my son with a stable place to live for a few years. I'm renting out the other two bedrooms. His younger brother may move there in a couple of years if he goes to the same school.
General advice would be appreciated. The more I search the internet the more questions I have.
I have a few things I am considering. I don't know if they are possible, viable, or worth it.

2024.05.16 03:04 saphishe false academic probation

okay so basically my prof is a dud and put a F on my transcript for my class when i knew i was going to end with a C. i had a rough past semesters and im finally digging myself out of the hole i was in, but this F dropped my GPA and placed me in academic probation.
when i emailed my prof, she basically said "thats not possible i made sure all grades were in when submitting grades but u can contact ur TA" and i did, my TA confirmed i was correct and had to send a very tense email to my prof telling her off basically. she changed my grade and now my GPA is way higher and above the threat of academic probation.
however, i still have academic probation on my account, im getting emails on all this stuff i need to do, my scholarship is staring at me like wtf is going on do we rescind our money or not, and so i emailed admin and asked them to, yknow, remove it, and they said "Academic standing will be updated again in July. If your GPA is above the university’s minimum standards at that time, your academic standing will be updated."
like dawg this wasnt just an incomplete grade or something this is one of ur guys genuinely fucking up and now i have to follow the process meant for people who were prepared for the limitations from academic probation??? like i feel i dont deserve this stress and the limitations im being threatened with.. but i want to know is it worth fighting for? or should i just nod and wait til july?

2024.05.16 02:53 jysm35 What am I doing wrong? who are the "other candidates"?

I am grateful to have had at least a couple of internships before i graduated but it seems like they mean nothing.
Lately i've been getting rejected right after applying by a lot of small non-tech companies like local hospital networks, retail companies, healthcare companies, etc
I'm applying to junioassociate/level 1 SWE roles so its not like i'm competing with people with 10 YEO. are ex-faang, ex-jane street people really applying to these kinds of places? because who else could those "other candidates" be?

2024.05.16 02:47 Educational_Wave4824 Any advice for optometry scholarships? Specifically for UHCO. (Stats included) *edited and shortened*

THIS IS A SHORTED VERSION OF A PREVIOUSLY DELETED POST: I post this earlier today but it was very long and not well articulated. I am really looking for advice and have spent quite some time trying to convey what I’m working with.
I just finished my junior year of undergrad. I am chem major and biology minor. I put in a lot of work and am really hoping it pays off w financial assistance. I’m sharing stat summaries and background info to hopefully gain some help/advice.
SUMMARY: To simplify it, so far I’ve been a full time student (~15 hrs), working two jobs as a tutor assisting up to Calc II, Intro to Stats, Gen chem, & O Chem as well as TA for Gen Chem lab. All whilst being in two officer position w/ two dif orgs. I then got another lab to TA and a promotion (Tutoring Team Lead & adding an O chem to TA) on top of the previously mentioned responsibilities. I have a GPA of 3.88 (3.97 for pre req), 240+ hours of research (+150 more planned for this summer), 300+ volunteer hours (some health care/some not), ~35 shadowing hours, in honors college, will be university scholar and ACS certified by graduation. I took my first year of college and senior year of HS simultaneously. I ended HS as 3rd ranked and various academic accomplishments if that is considered in application.
BACKGROUND: All this to be said, I am first gen college student from an ‘economically disadvantaged’ family of 7, I have had 4 siblings who’ve all tried college and have flunked out. In Spring ‘25 I will be the first person from either side of my family to earned a bachelors. (My dad never finished HS and none of my grandparents even finished middle school). I primarily worked so hard to eleviate some financial requirements. I found a passion for optometry/eye care due to having refractive and strabismic amblyopia from 8y/o to 16y/o until I got corrective surgery.
HELP/ADVISE: My top pick is UHCO but I am applying to both optom schools in tx and the one in oklahoma. I hate to have put in all this work for no compensation and am curious as what to do?
Plz suggest personal statement or secondary app essay idea, scholarships based off any of this info, etc. It would be so appreciated!!!

2024.05.16 01:31 International-One656 asshole teacher, and plagiarizing

One of my teachers accuse me of plagiarism when I didn’t even plagiarize the essay it was my final exam. He gave me a zero when I asked him about it. He said too bad end of conversation I didn’t even say I did or did not plagiarize the essay, but I didn’t and just didn’t say anything. I just got nervous. I didn’t know what to do because when you get accused of something like that, you freak out, he showed me a paper of the quill box saying that my sentence structuring was AI and that my spelling mistakes were AI, but they weren’t. I don’t know what to do at this point. I have a zero on my final and f in the class. What do you do with asshole teachers who do this shit he wouldn’t even help me get my grade up because I asked him to redo all my work because I was suspended for five days he claimed I skipped his class in which I never did and I was just gone because I don’t go to school as much as I should I’m not the best student, but I don’t think I deserve a zero for something I’m being accused of.

2024.05.16 01:01 Responsible_Oil_5638 Second Credit Card Reccomendation

Current cards: - Discover it Card , $1,500 limit, May 2022
FICO Score: 771
Oldest account age: 2 years
Chase 5/24 status: 1/24
Income: This one is tricky as I am an undergraduate college student and work part time. I have variable income but a lot of savings and low expenses. I just got a raise and made $500 last week, but that was not the case last year. I also have stocks and make dividends on that and I have a scholarship for school so I do not spend money on housing or education. I put 15000 when I applied for citi custom cash and got denied, likely because of income.
Average monthly spend and categories: • groceries: $125 - Gifts: $62 • gas: $56 - Services: $24 - Restaurants: $15 • travel/entertainment: $15 • Education: $15 - Medical: $13
• Open to Business Cards: I don’t think so.
What's the purpose of your next card? - Highest possible cash back and building credit
• Do you have any cards you've been looking at? - Citi custom cash(was denied) - Savor One Rewards for Students(pre approved but only 3% cash back and not on gas) -Chase Freedom Flex(on a calendar?) - U.S. BANK CASH+® VISA SIGNATURE® CARD - AMEX Blue Cash Everyday
Are you OK with category spending or do you want a general spending card? - I am not entirely sure what this means, but my current card rotates between categories for the cash back benefits and I would rather it go to my highest spending category or one that I could choose( or something that already aligns with something I spend a lot on like groceries or gas)
