House applies Steward lessons in new, expansive health bill

BOSTON — A sweeping new hospital oversight and industry reform bill is on the move atop Beacon Hill, representing what aides to House Speaker Ron Mariano view as the most significant health care cost control legislation in more than a decade.
The Legislature’s Health Care Financing Committee on Tuesday moved to advance a redrafted, 97-page proposal that combines lessons learned from the Steward Health Care crisis, major changes to how state regulators work to contain health care spending, and new tools to deal with facility expansions and closures.
Mariano already declared his support for the measure, and a version of it will likely reach the House floor for a vote in the coming months, adding yet another weighty, complicated topic to an already-packed agenda as the Legislature races toward a July 31 deadline to complete major business for the year.
However, it’s not clear what kind of a response the bill will elicit in the Senate, whose top Democrats for years have had their focus more trained on reining in prescription drug prices. “This legislation focuses on restoring stability to the health care system, and on bolstering accountability within the industry, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that everyone in Massachusetts has access to quality, affordable health care,” Mariano said in a statement to the News Service. “To achieve those goals, this bill makes important updates to how we regulate and monitor the health care market, informed by the Steward Health Care crisis, but also by the bigger problems in a sector that has never fully recovered from the pandemic.”
Officials in Mariano’s office pitched the wide-ranging bill as the biggest effort to contain health care costs since the 2012 law that established the Health Policy Commission, the Center for Health Information and Analysis and an annual benchmark representing a goal for spending growth.
The legislation also serves as a de facto acknowledgement that the existing regulatory and analytical structure has not been sufficiently equipped to keep cost and spending increases within reasonable limits, putting patients across the state under financial pressure as many providers face strain of their own.
Those conditions existed before upheaval at the for-profit, private equity-backed Steward Health Care exploded into public view this year, and the expanded committee bill takes into account the crisis that has taken center stage. The Steward-inspired changes are mostly forward-looking, aiming to prevent similar problems from emerging in the future, and would not immediately change the arc of the current upheaval, Mariano’s office said.
Acute care hospitals would be required to own the land on which their facilities stand to acquire state licensure, according to a committee-produced summary of the bill. That’s a contrast from the situation at Steward, which in 2016 sold its real estate to Medical Properties Trust, a real estate investment trust, and now leases back the hospital properties. The maneuver appears to have saddled hospitals with a burden they are struggling to manage: in January, Medical Properties Trust said Steward owed it about $50 million in unpaid rent.
“It isn’t Cerberus Capital that created the problem at Steward. It was the management of Steward selling the land to a holding company of which they have a majority interest, which smacks of a Ponzi scheme of the highest order,” Mariano said in an interview on WCVB’s “On the Record” earlier this month.
Hospitals licensed on or before April 1, 2024 – including Steward’s hospitals – would be exempt from the new requirement. The bill would also effectively require creditors and vendors to notify the Department of Public Health 60 days before repossessing medical or surgical equipment, and would void any contracts with providers that allow for any repossession more quickly.
That provision, too, is a direct response to Steward. In January, The Boston Globe reported about the case of Sungida Rashid, a 39-year-old new mother who died after doctors at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center – a Steward hospital – could not use an embolism coil to treat her internal bleeding because it had been repossessed over unpaid bills weeks earlier.
Another section would significantly strengthen data-reporting requirements and consequences, an area where Steward for years has allegedly been failing to comply with – and fighting in court against – existing law. Hospitals would need to disclose audited financial statements about out-of-state operations for their parent organizations, certain private equity investors, real estate investment trusts, and management services organizations.
They would also face much higher fines for falling short of those requirements, boosted from $1,000 per violation to $25,000 per violation with no maximum cap. The bill additionally empowers DPH to block certain licensure or expansion approval against a system that has failed to submit appropriate financial data to the state.
But Steward-related changes are just one category of reforms among several in the mix. The redrafted legislation would also overhaul health care cost containment and management at the state level, including by changing the existing one-year benchmark to a three-year cycle. Mariano’s office said a longer time period would better account for dips and spikes in spending by individual entities. In recent years, the rate of total health care expenditure growth has exceeded the target rate set by regulators, who have been pressing lawmakers to give them new tools to better contain the trend.
Other sections of the bill explicitly subject “payers” such as health insurance plans to both HPC scrutiny and performance improvement plans, the primary tool by which the independent agency can order an industry player to rein in its spending, and gradually require insurers to pay the same rates to all in-network providers.
The bill would expand the performance improvement plan process by empowering the HPC to instruct entities on how to cut their costs, rather than leave it to hospitals and systems to produce their own ideas for financial controls.
Almost every corner of the health care world is under substantial pressure at the moment. Patients are increasingly facing unaffordable costs that in some cases cause them to delay care, providers are struggling with tight margins and staffing shortages exacerbated by the pandemic, and different industry facets all have their own ideas about how to navigate the rocky terrain.
Some parts of the new bill take aim at protecting Bay Staters from loss of services and reinforcing smaller community hospitals against threatening expansions by larger academic medical centers, long a priority of Mariano’s.
The legislation would codify a requirement that any entity seeking to open an ambulatory surgery center in an area already served by an independent community hospital must first secure the support of that preexisting facility. It would also bring the HPC into the fold when a hospital or provider moves to shutter an essential service. Under existing law, a provider needs to notify DPH of a planned closure, describe the anticipated impacts on patients, and produce a plan to guarantee access to similar services elsewhere.
The bill would task HPC regulators with producing their own analysis of the impacts from an essential service closure, effectively ensuring that the conclusions come from independent state experts rather than from the organization pushing for the closure.
The Health Care Financing Committee gave members until 9 p.m. Tuesday to weigh in on the proposal. Like all other joint committees, representatives hold a majority of seats, so it’s likely the speaker’s support will allow the measure to advance with a favorable recommendation regardless of how senators feel.
Mariano’s office did not put a specific timeline on action Tuesday. The speaker himself said last week that health care legislation and a redraft of Gov. Maura Healey’s similarly dense housing bond and policy bill are high on his to-do list.
A spokesperson for Senate President Karen Spilka neither committed to bringing the Health Care Financing Committee bill forward nor shot it down, but signaled Tuesday that the Ashland Democrat is weighing similar topics.
“Under the leadership of Senate Chair Cindy Friedman, the Senate has taken steps to understand the effects of private equity in healthcare in order to keep up with the changing healthcare marketplace in the hopes of preventing another situation like the Steward crisis,” the spokesperson said. “The Senate is also looking at possibly changing or expanding the role of the Health Policy Commission as it has been more than a decade since this has been done. As with all bills that the Senate receives from the House, the Senate President and members will need time to review the bill and solicit feedback.”
Legislative leaders have agreed in the past couple of terms to bills expanding access to mental health care services, protecting reproductive- and gender-related care, boosting insurance coverage of telehealth and other topics.
Yet they have also failed to achieve consensus on some of their top priorities in the arena. The House last term approved a hospital expansion oversight bill – which formed a narrow foundation for the latest measure on the move – that never received a vote in the Senate, while Senate Democrats have had their attention on prescription drug pricing reforms that have failed to gain momentum in the House.

Leading Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Although there may be several variables involved in a motorcycle accident, the most common causes of severe injuries or fatalities involve the negligence of a driver. A motorcycle offers little protection when it collides with a car or truck. A car or truck has sheet metal, steel and other solid protection from the outside world to shield its drivers and passengers. A motorcycle does not have any similar protection. Therefore, when a motorcyclist gets into an accident with a car the impact can be devastating for the motorcyclist.
Motorcyclist should exercise a greater sense of defensive driving. Because of the lack of protection and drivers attributing their collisions with motorcyclist to “not being able to see them” a motorcyclist should be very careful.
The following are common causes of motorcycle accidents:
The injuries resulting from these accidents are often significant and can require substantial medical attention and continuing care. In order to make sure that you are properly compensated for your damages, enlist the help of a trustworthy attorney.
Quite often, when a motorcycle accident occurs it is important to have a dedicated motorcycle accident attorney on your case. If retained for your case I will diligently investigate all aspects of your case and pursue the compensation you may be entitled to. When I am retained by a client for their case I look into all avenues of their case and use a system that pursues full value for insurance claims.

My Two Wheel Accident:

On June 6, 2012, my life changed forever. I was riding my moped to work at the local restaurant in Hawaii Kai, HI when a rental vehicle crossed the lane line directly beside me and impacted me. This caused me to be hurled into the sky, slammed and skidded accross the asphalt with my head and upper body breaking my fall. This was all prior to becoming an attorney. I was living the life prior to that day, I rented a shoe box sized bedroom off Hobron lane. I worked at the restaurant in the evening and rented out Scoot Coupes to tourist on Waikiki Beach during the day. In hindsight, no settlement was going to bring that back. But, the settlement I got did help pay for my $48,000 in medical expenses from a week in the hospital, lost wages, pain and suffering.
If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident, I hope you call me to see if I can work for you to obtain the maximum amount from the insurance carrier. You keep your end of the bargain by paying premiums, hopefully an accident doesn't occur but if it does, they need to pay out the policy and uphold their end of deal. Unfortunately, to get you what you are entitled to sometimes that requires lawsuits, courts and jurys.
This is a photo right after they shot me full of fentanyl, the doc was cleaning out the asphalt:
This is a photo the docotor took before going into surgery the day of the accident:

2024.05.02 20:25 Prashant-12345 Should we leave the job of enacting the “Same-sex Marriage Law (SSML)” for the Parliament?

Parliament is made of its members who have compulsion to remain popular among the masses because they have to get votes. They can never grant the Human Rights or the Fundamental Rights to a minority class against the wishes of the majority class. The parliamentarians can only concentrate on their vote banks. They can make laws only to appease the masses even at the cost of ignoring the Principle of Natural Justice. The Parliament cannot be relied upon. It is a Parliament of the heterosexuals, by the heterosexuals, for the heterosexuals.
We need not go very far to get a proof of this. Who removed IPC-377? Would parliament have ever removed it? Absolutely not. IPC-377 would have been hanging over our neck like a sword even today had Judiciary not declared it unconstitutional.
Whenever a bill is presented to the parliament for voting, at first the parliament discusses it thoroughly, sometimes for days and may be even for longer periods. Each and every aspect of the bill, its consequences, pros and cons etc. are analyzed at length. The voting is done only after all the members have understood all the prospects of the bill completely and no member has any doubt about them.
However, most MP's know nothing about homosexuality. They think that it is an abnormal and unnatural human behaviour, a mental disease and a perversion. They also think that it is the choice of a person to be a homosexual. In such a situation, the outcome of the voting on SSML is already known.
If the job of enacting the SSML is left to the parliament, first the MP's need to be given a thorough training on Medical Facts about Homosexuality and a rigourous understanding of the opinion of medical science on the subject.
Homosexuality is not a choice, it is a compulsion imposed on a person by nature (or God). Nobody becomes a homosexual by his or her choice. Homosexuals are born and not created or converted. One’s sexual orientation is decided by nature when one is still in one’s mother’s womb and it becomes apparent only after reaching puberty when one starts feeling attracted to other people. Nobody else can know a person’s sexual orientation unless he/she tells. There is no drug or therapy discovered/invented by medical science which can convert a person born as homosexual into a heterosexual. Homosexuality is not based on caste, community, race, region, religion, skin colour, ethnicity, culture etc.
Out of every 100 persons born on this earth, about 2–3 are always born as homosexual. This percentage remains constant in countries where gay marriages are legal such as Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, France, Taiwan etc. (more than 30 countries) and in countries where homosexuality is punished by death such as Iran, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Uganda etc.
Homosexuality is not a mental disorder. Homosexuals are perfectly healthy people as far as their mental condition is concerned. Just like a heterosexual, a homosexual can also do any job. He can be an engineer, a doctor, scientist, lawyer, journalist, teacher, fashion designer, businessman, pilot, CA, sportsman, actor, politician, minister, governor, and even a king. Medical science has declared that homosexuality is 100% same and as natural as heterosexuality with no difference between them. Just like it is normal for a heterosexual man to get attracted towards a woman and for a heterosexual woman to get attracted towards a man, it is also perfectly normal and natural for a man who has taken birth as a homosexual to get sexually attracted to a man and for a lesbian to get attracted to a woman. The only difference between the two is that the number of homosexuals is very small in comparison to heterosexuals. However, being less in number does not mean that they have a mental disorder. The number of Parsis is very small in India and in the world. Are Parsis abnormal? The number of people who do not like Cricket in India is quite small. Has anybody ever said that such people have a mental disorder. Numerous such examples are there.
All these things need to be explained to the MP's before they go for voting on SSML They should also be told that not giving homosexuals their fundamental rights is a great social evil with very serious adverse consequence on the society.
The Constitution is supreme. The parliament has to work under the Constitution. For this reason, the makers of the Constitution developed Judiciary as an organ of democracy. They knew that times will come when the parliament will make anti-constitutional laws to please the majority and to get votes. At these times the judiciary was to keep a check on the parliament. All the laws made by the parliament are subject to scrutiny by the Supreme Court. When the Supreme Court finds that the parliamentarians have made a law which violates the constitution, it can overturn it. The judiciary does not have to get the votes of the masses. Therefore, it can reason, think logically and grant the Fundamental Rights to a single person against the wishes of one hundred persons.
In any society, about 2 to 3% people are born as homosexuals. Additionally, about 7 to 8% people are born as bisexuals. The total population of homosexuals and bisexuals in any country is about 10%. India, with an estimated population of about 140 crores, contains nearly 14 crore homosexuals and bisexuals, half of them men and half women. Nearly 4 crore homosexuals exist in India, 2 crore gay men and 2 crore lesbians. Similarly, India consists about 5 crore bisexual men and 5 crore bisexual women.
Indian heterosexuals have declared that being born as a gay or bisexual person is the most shameful thing on earth. They consider it more shameful than committing a murder or rape. Due to this reason, almost all of India’s gay and bisexual persons are living in closet. They are living in the garb of heterosexuals. This essentially means that not only they cannot marry with the person they want to, but they are also entangled in opposite-sex or the heterosexual marriages. About 99% of India’s 2 crore gay men are married to women and almost 100% of 2 crore lesbians are married to men. Not only the lives of about 2 crore gay men have been completely ruined but also of the 2 crore heterosexual women whom they are married to. About 2 crore Indian lesbians are raped every night for their whole lives by their ‘legalized’ husbands. The punishment for a single rape may be about 7 to 10 years jail term sometimes extending to life-long imprisonment. However, there is no punishment for this life-long rape of lesbians. Lives of 8 crore Indians have been completely destroyed, 4 crore of them being homosexuals and 4 crore heterosexuals. Yes, even the lives of 4 crore heterosexuals have been ruined. Why? Because the heterosexuals want to violate the fundamental rights of homosexuals at any cost. Further, India’s 10 crore bisexual man and women are all, in any case, married to opposite-sex persons whether they want it or not. To say it differently, India’s 10 crore heterosexuals are married to bisexuals which they would have never accepted willingly. These bisexuals, especially bisexual men, cheat with their spouses. They almost always cheat their wives and go to gay/bisexual men. The Indian heterosexuals are harming themselves in their zeal to hurt homosexuals.
This is the worst kind of slavery. India’s gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals are all slaves of heterosexuals. They have no other choice other than living as per the commandments of heterosexuals. A highly educated gay man with a post graduate degree or with a PhD in Science, Engg., Medicine or Law has to live as per the dictums of an illiterate daily wage labourer simply because this labourer is a heterosexual. He is the master of homosexuals. Unless he permits, even the most educated gay man cannot marry with his same-sex partner and enjoy his human right. The parliament will make a law for gay marriages only when he gives his consent. His opinion is supreme. As long as he does not agree, the constitution will keep on being violated.
This slavery is much worse than the slavery which the British imposed on us. The British were not interfering in any of our rights to life. They were just interested in our wealth and taking it away. It was basically an economic slavery for us. But the heterosexuals are taking away homosexuals’ right to life. The right to a life-partner is included in the right to life. Most humans want to spend their lives with a life-partner. They want company, togetherness, and affection from a person to whom they emotionally attached and they want to live with such a person under one roof all their lives and raise a family. Homosexuals are no different. They also have exactly the same desires. They also want to have a family. Not only humans but also many animals and birds live with their life partners. When a single animal of a particular species is left in a zoo, another animal of the opposite sex of the same species is brought from some other zoo to give company to it so that the single animal does not feel lonely. Sometimes such an animal is brought from a foreign country spending lakhs of Rupees. Recently 12 cheetahs were brought from South Africa and released in Kuno National Park and special care was taken so that about half of them are male and half female. However, right to a life-partner of homosexuals is violated. The homosexuals do not have an importance in the eyes of the Indian government even as an animal. It does not consider them more important than worms or insects. Such is the kind of slavery of homosexuals.
Recent research suggests that happily married people enjoy better health than single people. Those who are married tend to live longer, have fewer strokes and heart attacks, have a lower chance of becoming depressed, more likely to survive heart attacks, survive a major operation more often and consume less unhealthy food and alcohol.
The government of India does not give the right of marriage to homosexuals. With whom should they spend their lives then? One’s parents do not live for one’s lifetime. They will die. One’s brothers and sisters will be busy with their own lives. The Indian homosexuals, therefore, are destined to live a lonely life due to the adamancy of the government. As per the medical science, loneliness is silent killer. Human beings are thoroughly social creatures. Loneliness has a wide range of negative effects on both physical and mental health of humans and it takes a grave toll on their health. It has increased risk of heart attack, increased risk of having a stroke, increased risk of developing dementia and other serious medical conditions. Loneliness is a major risk factor for developing depression. It has been linked to insufficient sleep and increased mortality. It increases risk of premature death. It is even linked to higher rates of suicide.
Solitary confinement causing acute loneliness is the hardest punishment sometimes given to hardened criminals. Many times, it is considered violation of human rights even for the prisoners and Human Right Activists have opposed it around the world. The government of India, thus, is directly violating the Fundamental Right to Life of homosexuals.
Has any master in the history of earth ever given freedom on his own to his slave? We have fought about 90-year long war of independence against the British. What if the British had told us that they will themselves bring a bill for India’s independence in the House of Commons, get it passed and grant freedom to India and therefore the Indians need not protest against them? Would we have believed them? If not, then how can we hope that Indian parliament will ever make SSML and take homosexuals out of the clutches of heterosexuals? A slave always has to fight for his liberation and that is what the petitioners in this case are doing in the Supreme Court.
Not making a law to protect the Fundamental Rights of homosexuals is equivalent to making a law which violates the Constitution. Presently the parliament/ government is doing exactly that. The judiciary should, therefore, immediately come into action.
The Government of India does not have faith in the Constitution. We do not have faith in the Parliament.
Those who are advocating that only parliament can decide whether India should have SSML know it very well that parliament will never pass it. The government is strongly fighting against it today in the Supreme Court. What is the chance that tomorrow it will draft a bill for SSML and present it in the parliament for passing/ voting? No political party in India has ever talked about in last 75 years. It has never been on the agenda of any Indian party. No party has ever written about it in their election manifesto or declared their plan about it. The Supreme Court should understand this and should, therefore, order the government to bring SSML Bill in the parliament and get it passed. It is true that writing the draft of a new law is not the job of Supreme Court. However, it has powers to ask the government to do it.
In contrast, the Supreme Court of Nepal, a small and insignificant country in Asia, has done a commendable job and forced the Nepal Government to legalize same-sex marriages. Yes, Nepal has done it under the pressure from its Supreme Court. Although the Nepal Government succumbed to this pressure only in 2023, its SC had ordered it to enact SSML in 2007 itself, i.e., a full 16 years ago and it continuously kept building pressure on the Nepal government which finally bore fruit. In spite of the fact that there has been a political transition in Nepal during all these years and Nepal was re-writing its Constitution, this has been achieved. Here is the history of a fight for SSML in Nepal:
· On March 23, 2007, Nepal’s Supreme Court ordered the Nepali government to legally recognize same-sex marriages.
· On November 17, 2008, the Supreme Court made Nepal to consider legalizing same-sex marriages. The court asked the government to form a committee to study same-sex marriage laws in other countries.
· In February 2016, Nepal's National Human Rights Commission asked the government to introduce a bill to allow same-sex marriages.
· On 20 March 2023, the Supreme Court of Nepal ordered the Nepali government to recognize a same-sex marriage between a Nepali and a German citizen performed in Germany and directed the Federal Parliament to legalize same-sex marriages in Nepal. Judges also directed the government to draft legislation for full marriage equality in Nepal, declaring laws banning same-sex marriages to be unconstitutional and discriminatory. The court asked Nepal’s Ministry of Law and Justice to prepare an equal marriage law or amend existing laws to accommodate the principles of equal marriage.
· Nepal's Supreme Court on 2 May 2023, ordered Nepal Government to recognize the same-sex marriage between a Nepali man and his foreign husband and instructed the government to move towards the legalization of same-sex marriages. The Court ruled that failure to recognize same-sex spouses violates Nepal’s Constitution and its international human rights obligations.
· On 30 November 2023, Nepal formally registered the first case of same-sex marriage. With this historic move, Nepal has become the second Asian Nation (first being Taiwan) and the first South Asian nation and to do so. The marriage between Ram Bahadur Gurung, 36, and Surendra Pandey, 26, was formally registered at the Dordi rural municipality office in the Lumjung district in west Nepal.
· On 12 February 2024, Anju Devi Shrestha, a resident of Bardiya district in western Nepal and Suprita Gurung, a resident of Syangja district, both 33, scripted history by becoming the first lesbian couple in Nepal to officially register their marriage at Jamuna Rural Municipality of Bardiya district.
· Nepal government intends to pass a separate law on same-sex marriages currently being drafted by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare.
But unfortunately, The Supreme Court of India has already succumbed to the pressure of the Indian government and dismissed all the 18 petitions filed before it. Why India’s Supreme Court is so helpless and so weak when the Supreme Court of a small country like Nepal can assert itself?
. . . . . .
It is said that only 34 countries have made SSML. Out of 195 countries, 34 is a big number in this matter. It is not ‘only’. OK, how many countries should do it before India follows suit? How do we calculate it? What is the formula? Will India do it only when all other counties have done it except India? Is it necessary to be the last when it comes to doing good things? India always remains in the front in doing bad things. It is one of the leading countries in corruption. India’s crime rate is one of the highest in the world. Indian businessmen indulge in profiteering, over-charging, less weighing, adulteration, hoarding, tax evasion and following all unethical business practices. But in doing good things, India wants to remain a back-bencher.
Why did The Netherlands make SSML in 2001 becoming the first country to do it? Why did Denmark made Same-sex Partnership Law as early as in 1989 (which was later renamed as SSML in 2012)? These countries never thought why should they do it when no other country had done it. No good work would ever be done if we keep looking towards one-another not to be the first. Why does India want to prove that The Netherlands and Denmark are superior countries and India is inferior? It cannot even think to match them.
It has also been said that SSML has been made in most of these 34 countries by the government / legislature rather than the judiciary. However, we need to keep in mind that these 34 are developed, civilized and educated countries whose citizens respect the rights of minorities and do not infringe upon them. These are truly democratic countries having high regards for right to equality.
India, on the contrary, is a false, flawed and pseudo-democracy. When Lalu Prasad Yadav go to jail in a corruption case, his totally un-lettered wife who has been confined to family’s kitchen all her life becomes the Chief Minister. One third of the members of India’s parliament and state assemblies have criminal cases against them. Here elections are fought on the basis of caste, region and religion using money and muscle power. When India’s robbers and dacoits, murderers, kidnappers, rapists and extortionists give-up crime for some reason, what do they do? They become MP’s and MLA’s. What human rights can be discussed with likes of Atique Ahmed, Mohd. Shahabuddin, Mukhtar Ansari, Phoolan Devi, Santokben Jadeja and Kuldeep Singh Sengar?
Indian population has a high degree of illiteracy. The citizens do not respect others’ rights and interfere in the internal affairs of their fellow countrymen. They do not understand the laws of nature and interfere in the acts of God. They force others to live as per their whims and fancies. When they find that the others are not living as per their commands, they will thrash, hit, beat, kick, attack, lynch and kill them. Indian heterosexuals have extreme hatred for homosexuals. They ridicule them, laugh at them, hate them, condemn them, shun them and ostracize them. It’s a far cry to expect from them that they will give equal rights to homosexuals. India’s right to equality will remain only on paper if left to people / parliament.
The argument that the SSML has been made in other countries by the government and not the Judiciary goes only against those who are giving this argument. When the legislature of so many countries has already discussed the issue and upheld it, what does India expect to achieve by again discussing it? Why should we reinvent the wheel? Is there any country whose parliament took up this issue and rejected it? No. Then why do we need to take the matter again and waste time.
The question is not who has done it in 34 countries, the Government or the Judiciary. The real question is whether SSML is right or wrong. And we already know the answer.
. . . . . .
The Special Marriage Act, 1954 was essentially made for heterosexuals. Tweaking (fine-tuning) it to suit it to homosexuals also is not practical. Almost each clause of the act will have to have two paras if we do that. One for heterosexuals and the other for homosexuals. As an example, in the heterosexual marriages, a man gives maintenance to his wife if divorce happens and not the vice versa. This provision cannot be used in homosexual marriages. A new provision will be required. Similarly, in the Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (which is closely related to heterosexual marriages) there is provision to punish a man if he does cruelty to his wife but there is no provision to proceed against a woman if she does cruelty to her husband. This cannot be applied to homosexual marriages. For such reasons, a completely new law (SSML) is required to be written. Whereas heterosexual marriage laws depend on the religion of the man/woman getting married, SSML will be the same irrespective of the religion of the persons getting married. Whether the two homosexuals getting married are Hindus, Muslims or one is Hindu and the other is Muslim, the same law will govern their marriage. The issues of divorce, succession/inheritance can be handled either by studying the gay marriage laws of other countries or by adopting the best practices of Hindu Marriage Act 1955, Muslim Personal Law 1937, The Indian Christian Marriage Act 1872, The Anand Marriage Act, 1909, and the Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act, 1936 etc.
The issue of adoption is unrelated to marriage. It can be decided later on. Not all gay/lesbian couples will adopt. It will not be correct, therefore, to refuse/delay SSML If we cannot decide whether to allow gay couples to adopt. They cannot be stopped from marriage itself if the issue is pending. The same is true for surrogacy. As long as we do not decide the adoption/surrogacy issues, married gay couples can be considered as unmarried for this purpose and the provision used for single people can be applied on them.

#06 AHAA Run (Quagmiris), Log 03 (MidgamePh2) - Sampling Microbots
Hope everybody is doing great! I just hit the halfway point of my Midgame at Cycle 507 (Figure 1 and Figure 2), and I'm currently facing some Water supply and Metal/Refined Metal shortages. So far, I have a good surplus of my power source and I have already established permanent living conditions for my duplicants. Overall, the base can be left to operate by itself; however, I won't be able to expand for now due to lack of building materials. You can check my previous post here and the context of why I'm doing this.
Figure 1. Base at Cycle 507 (Upper Region)
Figure 2. Base at Cycle 507 (Lower Region)
As I have said previously, the midgame comprises of four subphases, and this post will be dedicated to discussing Phase 2, which is about stabilizing my Steel Production, and creating a permanent habitat for my duplicants. This will last until approximately Cycle 400 (although I extended for a hundred of cycles because I needed to address material shortages during expansion). Enumerated below is the Phase 2 section of my Checklist.
5. MIDGAME PHASE 2: Industrial Revolution (approximately between Cycle 250 to 400)
  • 5.1 Add backup power sources.
  • 5.2 Create a Data Bank Rocket (you need 1730 banks in total).
  • 5.3 Create a scout and a voyager rocket.
  • 5.4 Create an Industrial Complex with STAT Cooling.
  • 5.5 Relocate your dupes to a Permanent Base.
  • 5.6 Finalize your Oxygen Supply System.
  • 5.7 Centralize the Suit System.
  • 5.8 Finalize your Water System.
  • 5.9 Accomplish the Job Suitability achievement.
  • 5.10 Accomplish the Honorary Doctorate achievement
Exploring the Microbot Story Trait
As I entered this section of the Midgame, I veered off a little before getting to my main tasks. I wanted to try the Microbot Story Trait and see if the microbots will help with my labor demands. At cycle 271, I successfully powered the setup by establishing a water-locked room of CO2 and Zombie Spores, to be circulated with the Microbot machine (Figure 3). This is not actually a permanent setup since it's standing in the way of my future permabase (right hemisphere of my map). Being with a couple of microbots, I really can say that they are handy (was considering to put up a horde in the future), having an easy sporechid setup (just let them in an isolated place and you're good to go).
Figure 3. Microbot Setup.
However, the steel creep (machine needs 1800 kg only, but keeps on asking for steel especially if microbot production is continuous) is actually inconvenient at this time, since I haven't mass produced my steel. Not advisable for middle game, but is beneficial if in the late game you are already steel-rich.
It was also during this time that I obtained the Morale High Ground Achievement due to my research dupe being in space for more than 10 cycles, creating data banks. I also put up another SPOM to vent out in the vacuum of space to produce more hydrogen gas as power is dipping at cycle 292.
Second and Third Rocket Voyage
Besides the shortage of hydrogen for power, I also experienced the lack of reed fibers at Cycle 312. This interfered with the repair of my atmosuits. My goal was then to get reed fibers from other planetoids, as well as speeding up my drecko population. I then proceeded to create two more rockets, one for interplanetoid conquest and the other for space recon [5.3]. I then set my voyager rocket (2nd Voyage, as the data bank rocket was my first) to go towards the Radioactive Forest Planetoid to obtain Thimble Reed seeds, Arbor Tree seeds, Pip critters, coal, gold amalgam, and aluminum ore (Figure 4). From the launch at Cycle 314, I landed at Cycle 321 and was able to get back home at Cycle 331.
Figure 4. Radioactive Forest Planetoid.
It was also during this time (Cycle 321) that I was able to generate all the Data Banks needed for all the Level 4 research [5.2]. I then sent my data bank rocket back home to be refitted into another scout rocket. I then launched my scouting missions at Cycle 335. After a while, my reed fiber were able to caught up with the suit demand due to the thimble reeds as well as the accrued drecko population. I then proceeded to create an atmo suit checkpoint at the near bottom part of my planetoid to start construction of my Industrial Complex there (I planned to place it near the magma biome).
Inductrial Complex
At Cycle 345, I decided to place my future Industrial Complex at the lowermost left hemisphere of my map, near the magma biome. With an atmosuit checkpoint nearby, I can now set my construction tasks with efficiency.
During the early stages of my construction, I once again experienced a power dip (due to my depleting hydrogen surplus) so I eventually decided to employ a significant solution [5.1] by erecting a solar farm at the right hemisphere of my map at Cycle 370 (Figure 5). Also, somewhere around Cycle 363, I was able to accumulate my first million kcal of food due to my deep freeze system.
Figure 5. Solar Farm.
My industrial zone will be composed of a temporary Dry Industrial Sauna, where the liquid coolant of the Metal Refineries will be cycled in the steam chamber of the STAT (steam turbine, aquatuner) chamber. The liquid coolant should have a high boiling point, and I decided to use Naphtha for this. To be able to obtain this material, I created a plastic melter at cycle 376 (Figure 6).
Figure 6. Plastic Melter.
With my coolant in place, I finally finished my Industrial Zone at Cycle 390 [5.4] (Figure 7). This setup has an independent power grid run by Coal generators. I put two aquatuners in the steam chamber, one is currently operational for cooling the steam turbines, while the other is standby for my future subzero zone.
Figure 7. Temporary Dry Industrial Sauna.
Permabase
It's already cycle 400 (which is my estimated deadline) and I still haven't done the meat of this subphase—my permanent base. To start this off, I sent my voyager team to the second planetoid to gather some extra building resources (metal, refined metals, diamonds, etc.) and send them back to my home planetoid via teleporters (this is faster). During this time, I gained an extra duplicant for labor since my researcher finished everything in the tech tree at Cycle 416 [5.10].
My first task is to create my permanent kitchen in the base and transfer all my deep frozen food in the new chamber. I finished this at Cycle 439 (Figure 8). Take note that this kitchen has a nearby PReT-STAT module for temperature control purposes.
Figure 8. Permanent Kitchen Area.
With all my food transferred and my kitchen operational, I started moving my dupe population little by little: bedrooms, washrooms, and a big great hall. My permabase was livable by Cycle 468 [5.5]. It should be noted that one problem settling in this region was the temperature, which was hard to deal with for now (average ambient temperature is -50 deg C).
To start addressing this problem, I started creating a Full Rodriguez (Figure 9) [5.6], dedicated to supplying oxygen to my whole base. This has no cooling for now so that the warm oxygen can start raising the ambient temperature of the permabase (operational at Cycle 474).
Figure 9. Full Rodriguez.
With the excess oxygen now in the map, I started shutting down my early SPOMs to conserve water. I then proceeded to finalize my lead checkpoint at the top of my base, and produced a lot of lead suits (50-60) to allow smooth automation. At cycle 480, the station is now running, fully automated [5.7]. With everything properly set up in my permabase, I began to lock my dupes inside and have them use Lead Suits from now on as they get out of the base (Figure 10).
Figure 10. Permanent Base.
Job Suitability
With my dupe population at 23, I thought that I needed to finish the Job Suitability Achievement as much as possible. I recalled all my duplicants to my home planetoid and have them work with daily showering on atmosuits (Figure 11). To ensure that no dupe misses a day, I edited my schedule to have more downtimes. I also turned all the work times to bath times (dupes will still do their tasks when they don't need to take a bath). I finished everything at Cycle 507 [5.9].
Figure 11. Brute-force Job Suitability System.
Critter Evolution Center
Let me also note this critter evolution chamber where the mechanism of closing doors allows the drowning of critters, turning them into meat without having the duplicants attack them. I also decided to just put the slug plugs in a closed area since they cannot be drowned.
Figure 12. Critter Evolution Center.
[END LOG]
That's it for this post! As of now, I actually skipped one last step in Phase 2, which is the finalization of my water supply, and it almost running low at cycle 490 [5.8]. I still have to think about how to structure my water system since the vents are also standing in the way of my permabase (Figure 13).
Figure 13. Liquid Vents.
But all in all, I'm feeling good with this run and I'm now entering Phase 3, which is the construction of my Nuclear Power Station, which will increase my power supply ten-fold. I'll see you again, and thank you for reading!

2024.05.02 20:09 bubba1819 Looking at making an offer on a property soon, would appreciate outside perspectives

Hi all, spouse and I have found a property that seems to check all the boxes for us. Property is in northern New England (USA), 130 acres, 100 acres are wooded and the other 30 acres are currently used as a hayfield growing primarily alfalfa.
Our plan for the property is to hay the fields for three years before purchasing any animals. Family member has hay equipment and raises beef cows so (if everything works out) they’re going to pay me to use their equipment in return for the hay. We’ll probably do this permanently but with further negotiations in the future, such as keeping a portion of the hay for ourselves when we have our own animals. This just seems to make sense so that we don’t have as much overhead expenses of having to buy a tractor and all the necessary haying attachments.
We plan to build ourselves a small, roughly 500sq ft, house on the property that we would move into and then sell the house we currently own. Once we’re on the property we’re thinking that we’d start with garden beds and raising chickens for both laying and meat, then gradually incorporate pigs and eventually a few beef cows. The last animals that will be added to the farm will be two draft horses. These are for both work and pleasure. They will be used in the winter to twitch out logs for firewood and a little for lumber. All this time my spouse will continue working full time from home and I will continue working part time in the medical field. We don’t ever plan to make a living off of farming, just to produce enough food to support ourselves and enough to sell each year to qualify for farming tax credits.
We also have close friends that have already agreed that they’d be willing to live in a small guest cabin (we would build this after the 500sq foot house) on the property part time to help out on the farm in exchange for goods from the farm.
Do you all think this is a reasonable idea? What would you change? I could have written a lot more but I didn’t want to make this too long. My spouse and I both have many years of experience working on farms and with livestock. We’re relatively young, both in our mid-30’s.

2024.05.02 20:08 DTG_Bot This Week In Destiny 05/02/2024

Source: https://www.bungie.net/7/en/News/Article/twid-05-02-2024
This week in Destiny we’re fine tuning our PvP loadouts. We’ve got three new beautiful Crucible maps coming next week, and we want to make sure we’re ready. So, grab that Rose you’ve been dominating with, and let’s get into it.
This week topics:
  • PVP map pack launch.
  • The Pantheon boss profiles.
  • The Pantheon Bungie Rewards.
  • New Rahool reputation and Exotic system.
  • The Final Shape shader icon revamp.
  • PvP Strike Team update.
  • Superblack shader now available.
  • Windows 7 and 8 deprecation. ##PvP Map Pack Launch
With Update 7.3.6.4 this Tuesday, May 7, three new maps will be coming to Crucible: Cirrus Plaza, Eventide Labs, and Dissonance. We gave our first look at these maps last month during our Destiny 2: Into the Light Dev Livestream #3. In that stream, we provided a walkthrough of each map with discussion around our design goals, creation process, and artistic considerations with developing these maps. If you haven’t checked it out yet, head over and watch it now.
With only a few days until their release, we wanted to take a final look at these maps from a slightly different angle. That's why we partnered with our favorite community cartographer, Relikt, to develop callout map overviews. We've been fans of his callout maps for years, and we are thrilled to work with him on this new set of Crucible maps. Let’s jump in and take a look!

Eventide Labs

Eventide Labs is set in a long-forgotten human colony research outpost on Europa that Eramis chose to use as a refueling station.
Image Linkimgur
Image Linkimgur
With initial spawns near point A at the Warehouse and near point C at the Ice Caves, players will make their way to contest the Servitor area that holds point B and a valuable Heavy ammo crate. But be careful! While the interior of the map by the Promenade and Upper Glacial is more closer-quarters battle focused, a handful of longer sight lines in the space between Air Dock and Loading Bay means you’ll have to ensure that you approach carefully, or you may be on the wrong side of a Sniper Rifle.

Cirrus Plaza

Our next map takes us to Neptune. Cirrus Plaza is set in a shopping and entertainment center on Neomuna.
Image Linkimgur
Image Linkimgur
There are four distinct areas on Cirrus Plaza with the Arcade, Restaurant, Aquarium, and Atrium. Players will spawn in the Arcade near point A and the Restaurant near point C. The Atrium will be an area of interest, as players will seek the Heavy ammo crate that spawns in the middle and battle to earn the valuable high ground. However, with sight lines spanning multiple floors and players battling for point B nearby, Guardians will need to get in and out quickly or ensure they have teammates watching their back.

Dissonance

If you’ve always wanted to PvP on a terraformed Pyramid ship , then we’ve got you covered. Equal parts beautiful and haunting, Dissonance is set on the Witness’s former ship, Essence, which was terraformed by the Traveler.
Image Linkimgur
Image Linkimgur
With initial spawn points near the Fossils at point A and the Sigil at point C, the map offers somewhat direct paths through the middle, where players will be drawn to Orbits to engage in heated brawls over the Heavy ammo and across the bottom of the map towards point B.

New Territory

When these maps arrive on May 7, they’ll be on a separate 3v3 playlist called "New Territory," so you can enjoy the new experience these maps offer on demand. The playlist will replace the 3v3 Quickplay node and feature the three new maps with the following game modes: Survival, Elimination, Clash, and Collision. Be sure to pick up the introductory quest from Shaxx for more details on the maps and playlist.
Additionally, while New Territory is the designated playlist for the new maps, the maps will be available in other playlists and the private lobby as usual.
Lastly, New Territory will be available until the end of the Season, at which point any player who engaged in the playlist will be awarded with the new Slaycation emblem!

The Pantheon Boss Deep Dive

The Pantheon is upon us. The new PvE raid gauntlet opened this week featuring four bosses as part of the first wave. With more bosses on the way each week, we wanted to take a moment to highlight the targets you’ve been tasked with taking down. We’ve got the details to ensure you know thy enemies well.
VANGUARD – GUARDIAN DISPATCH – ALL POINTS BULLETIN

DEFENDERS OF THE CITY,
You are tasked with the elimination of the following targets:

-GOLGOROTH-

CLASSIFICATION
  • Hive
  • Blood of Oryx
  • Ogre
  • Worm
HAZARDS
  • Void eye beam
  • Venomous gaze
  • Unstable Light
  • Monstrous strength and durability
INTEL
  • Ogres are forged -- through tortuous trials and dark rituals -- from corrupted and deformed Thralls known as Unborn. They know only pain and are conditioned to hate and despise the Light.
  • Golgoroth is a Hive Ogre, infested with burrowing parasites related to the Worm gods and committed to Oryx’s service. One of the most powerful ogres ever known, Golgoroth was felled aboard the Dreadnaught by the same brave fireteam that delivered the Taken King his final death.
  • Vanguard operatives uncovered that Golgoroth was enlisted as a vessel to both tithe violence directly to Oryx and corrupt hordes of stolen Light from Oryx’s conquests. The ogre’s flesh also served as containment for a Tablet of Ruin.
OF NOTE
  • Recovered from Golgoroth’s remains, Tablet of Ruin x1.
  • The item has been vaulted for proper containment.
  • Deciphered Hive apocrypha suggests Golgoroth was fond of flower petals. Daughters of Savathûn would send warriors with petals stuffed beneath their chitin as deathly delights for the Ogre.

-CARETAKER-

  • Resonant empowerment
INTEL
  • Slain by the intrepid fireteam that stormed the Sunken Pyramid in the fetid Court of Savathûn, the Caretaker is a being of which we know little. It resembles a Scorn Abomination but has been the subject of several experiments and is believed to have been host to a Worm.
  • The Caretaker was entrusted with a collection of Wormspawn as well as other entities the Witness and Rhulk had obtained to be analyzed and stored within the Pyramid.
  • Reports from fireteams raiding the Sunken Pyramid mention that the Caretaker appears to have been both victim to and overseer of experiments seeking to fuse Worms and Scorn together.
OF NOTE
  • Multiple fireteams have commented on what appear to be “pet” mutations that are believed to have belonged to the Caretaker. Whether these were rejected experiments or unsanctioned creations isn’t known.
  • There is a discrepancy in the number of Wormspawn marked as collected from the Pyramid and those delivered to the Tower’s vault containment. Guardians who have information regarding their whereabouts should submit a report to Vanguard Leadership.

-ATRAKS-1, FALLEN EXO-

  • Teleportation
  • Stasis empowerment
INTEL
  • *Exos are humanoid machines that house a living mind. Atraks-1 obtained this technology from a BrayTech station orbiting Europa. Atraks’s mind commands multiples copies of her Exo frame.
  • Before converting herr form, Atraks acted as Council to Eramis, Kell of House Salvation for many years. Atraks was entrusted with command of the Deepstone Crypt. She was destroyed by the Guardian fireteam that brought the Morning Star down from orbit.
  • Atraks-1 created multiple copies of herself to deceive foes. Fireteams encountering this tactic in the future are advised to locate the original target and focus a simultaneous strike.
  • Atraks was at one time seen as a voice of reason, an orator, able to speak to the hearts of the Eliksni youth in House Salvation.
OF NOTE
  • The Hidden have relayed rumors that a copy of Atraks-1’s mind exists, stored somewhere on Europa. This has yet to be verified.
  • At least two of the initial six fireteam members that destroyed Atraks-1 believe they destroyed a clone and that the real Atraks-1 still lives. This is under investigation.

INTEL
  • Zo’Aurc is a Cabal clone created by the deposed Emperor Calus and is assigned to a detachment of the Shadow Legion forces aboard the Witness’s personal Pyramid ship.
  • According to Vanguard decryption teams, Zo'Aurc, who was granted the title Explicator of Planets, has surveyed a collection of worlds conquered by the Black Fleet for an unknown purpose. Preliminary theories span weighing the worlds for Discipleship to searching for the Veil or a method of contributing to the Final Shape.
OF NOTE
  • Reports conclude that even the Shadow Legion was not immune to Nezarec’s torment. Zo’Aurc details his own nightmares and more reports of nightmares and violent incidents among his forces.

And if the thrill of the hunt wasn’t enough, your success in The Pantheon will nab you not only some loot in-game, but also the opportunity to add some heroic Bungie Rewards to forever mark your accomplishments, including the Godslayer Title Pin and The Pantheon Raid Ring.
Image Linkimgur
The Pantheon Raid Ring features a legendary re-envisioning of our iconic first Raid Ring, launched in 2020. Beyond the striking raid symbol as the focus of the ring, owners will also have a private reminder of the importance of loyalty in the face of adversity. Etched on the inside is a message that reads, “Glory comes easy when you have allies you can trust.” The epitome of strength and camaraderie, The Pantheon Raid Ring stands as a testament to the valor and unity found in the heat of battle. This special Bungie Rewards offer is available for purchase only to players who complete all encounters from any tier of The Pantheon in Destiny 2 by June 3, 2024.
The Godslayer Title Pin will also be available for purchase via Bungie Rewards for players who complete the Godslayer Title by June 3, 2024.

Rahool’s Frequent Decryptor Program

The experience of grinding out new Exotic armor can be a time-consuming process. It can take quite a few runs to get the drop you’re looking for, and many more to get one that has stats that support your build. Besides that, with Exotic armor pieces often forming the backbone of a powerful build, new players are regularly asked to spend a long time tackling challenging content solo before being able to run builds that support the most effective tactics.
Luckily, the Econ Team has established a good working relationship with the Tower’s Number One Cryptarch over the last year as we added Exotic armor focusing, and we have managed to help Rahool set up a new promotional program of sorts that makes farming the armor you want more deterministic and less dependent on rotators.
Image Linkimgur
Starting in The Final Shape, Rahool is going to be the source for any new Exotic armor that we release. When you first talk to Rahool after The Final Shape launch, he will introduce you to a new rewards program tied to his brand-new Reputation Track. The idea is simple: the more you decode engrams with him, the more you increase your reputation with him. Once you completely fill the reputation track once and reset your rank, Rahool will allow you into an elite club, giving you access to a new tier of focusing.
Once you become one of Rahool’s “Engram Ensiders” (he was very proud of the name, so be nice to him), you’ll be able to purchase any piece of Exotic armor for any character on your account for one Exotic engram and one Exotic cipher, in addition to the previous focusing options. Because this is tied to Rahool’s new reputation track, there is no weekly limit to using this tier of focusing; as long as you still have Exotic ciphers and engrams, you can keep rolling armor.
With this change, we are also altering the way that old sources of Exotic armor work. First, Lost Sectors will keep the same drop rates for Exotics but will instead drop engrams whenever they would have previously dropped gear. Neomuna will also still drop new Exotic armor when you complete a Vex Strike Force encounter, but we won’t be adding any more new armor to the drop list after Season of the Wish.
With these changes, we know you’re wondering, “How long will it take to get this newfangled tier of focusing? I’ve got the World’s First Race to prepare for, wot wot!” Without going into the exact numbers, the actions that will give the most reputation will be precision decryption (aka Tier 2 focusing), followed by advanced decryption, then opening an Exotic engram , and last but also least, opening a prime engram. So, if you want to be ready for the Witness’s forces as soon as possible, make sure to stock up on Exotic engrams and Ascendant Shards before June 4, as with a little more than a full stock of Exotic engrams you’ll be able to start focusing new armor.

Shader Icon Revamp

With The Final Shape, we're upgrading the look and design of the shader icon layout. Shaders are a core way a player can provide a unique look and feel to their Guardian, and we wanted to help continue to make that a better experience. Our goal with this update is to help make the shader icons more accurately reflect the colors and textures they will apply.
Image Linkimgur
Currently, there are some issues that can make the experience of applying a shader inconsistent. The first being that, while each shader applies six colors, only four are currently shown on the shader icon. This can sometimes result in the shader appearing differently than players may expect from the icon preview.
Adding to this is the fact that all four color sections of the current shader icon are equal in shape and size, making it difficult to distinguish what the main colors will be when applied. There are also many shaders that have unique glows that players strive for, and with the current design, they are not represented. Gambit Jadestone is a great example of this.
Gambit Jadestone Shader Icon - Current
Image Linkimgur
To help address these issues, we've made updates to the shader icon design that includes all six colors for that shader. We are also changing the design in a way that makes the primary colors appear to take more space than the secondary colors for a more accurate representation with most gear items. Glows are also reflected in the updated design so it will be easier to distinguish those shaders within your shader selection screens.
Gambit Jadestone Shader Icon - Updated In The Final Shape
Image Linkimgur
We tested many different design solutions for this goal, and eventually settled on adding a diamond to the center of the current icon design and changing the layout of the color slots on the icon.
We’re hoping these new improvements will offer a better experience for Guardians looking to show off their best looks.

PvP Strike Team Update

Image Linkimgur
Hello everyone, PvP Strike Team here to talk about Special ammo in the Crucible. Since Update 7.3.5, we’ve been doing a substantial amount of iteration on our Special ammo distribution systems. We’ve tried the meter system in multiple playlists as well as two different versions of the ammo crates system in Competitive, Hardware, and for a limited time in Trials. Some people asked why we are bothering to do this level of experimentation, and we’d like to explain it.
The Respawn System
The original Special ammo distribution system was brought into the game with Forsaken and, combined with allowing players to pick up ammo from defeated opponents, it eventually peaked in a short period of time where Special weapons eclipsed Primary weapons for final blows in Crucible. We walked it back several times, mostly focused on how much ammo you could pick up from bricks on the ground, but we were still left in a position of one-shot kill Special weapons making up a substantial percentage of Crucible final blows and contributing to many of the issues with sandbox readability we have discussed before.
While the respawn system had its issues and we felt there was some room for improvement, it did do a decent job of balancing ammo distribution between high- and low-performing players, with high-performing players on average utilizing Special ammo 1.5-2 times more than low performing players. Similarly, with years of the system in place, the Special weapon meta had solidified nicely. Shotguns were at the top, with around 47% of Special weapon kills. Snipers and Fusions combined to make up 43%, and all the other Special weapons were the remaining 10%.
When investigating changes to the respawn system, it became apparent that we were very limited in terms of how we could tune the system to get the desired effects, and that led us to investigate two additional systems. While we wanted to be able to solve the problem of too many one-hit kills in PvP, it was important to us that the new systems did not introduce new and potentially worse problems.
The Meter System
To understand the meter system, we first need to take you through its development. This system was originally intended to be experimental, utilized only in the temporary Labs mode, Checkmate. It was built using a combination of other existing systems co-opted from various parts of the game that allowed us to do things we could not usually do in Crucible, like retaining the state of the meter between lives and between rounds (an invisible stat on the scoreboard the game reads back every time you respawn), dropping ammo directly onto the player in a transmat (an invisible ammo crate that opens directly above you and then deletes itself), carrying the full amount of ammo over between deaths (utilizing the logic system we use in PvE activities to re-grant you ammo on spawn), and displaying the current progress of the meter (the UI bar borrowed from Exotic weapon and activities buffs).
Reception to the system in Checkmate was mixed, but we saw there was a lot of potential in our first truly “earnable” Special ammo system. Since its introduction, we have iterated on it several times, including earlier this week, and have gotten it into a much more acceptable state. Unfortunately, as the meter system has been exposed to the wider game for an extended period, we have run into two core issues which have required us to continue to look for possible solutions.
Balance Issues – The overall balance of the meter system in the wider sandbox has been concerning. It primarily benefits one player type over all others, with players who routinely perform above average in their lobbies getting the double benefits of having more Special ammo than the respawn system allowed at certain points in the game, while their opponents often have much less. In the meter system, high-performing players are earning Special ammo at 3.5 times the rate of lower-performing players, a delta which has led to many non-high-performing players abandoning Special weapons entirely. In Competitive, for example, with the meter system in use low-performing players were more likely to get kills with Heavy ammo weapons than they were with Special ammo weapons.
The weapon balance has become similarly one-sided, as it promotes Shotguns as the main solution, and all other Special weapons are perceived as no longer useful for most players when in an ammo-limited situation. Under the meter system, Shotguns have more than 76% of Special weapon kills, with Fusions and Snipers reduced to a combined 18%, and the rest of the Special weapons making up only 6%. This has led to a very “rich get richer” meta, where the best performing players and weapons are now even stronger by comparison without having to do anything differently.
Earlier this week we took steps to improve on these issues, but the difficulty we face in a system where Special ammo is almost entirely earned is that we have limited room to close the gap between high and low performers before it functionally becomes "everyone gets Special ammo on a timer," which is something we'd like to avoid.
Technical Issues – Balance problems aside, being built on tech that was not designed to be used in this way has exposed multiple issues that, upon investigation, we determined could not be easily fixed in the meter’s current state. Some things, like being unable to notify opponents that an ammo transmat has occurred or give starting ammo on join-in-progress, are already apparent to players. Other problems, which are far more significant, appear in the backend and affect how we handle several of the processes, impacting our ability to both balance and maintain the system in the long term. Functionally, these combined issues require us to rebuild the meter from the ground up as a new, dedicated system. We feel the system has shown enough merit that this is something we are undertaking for a future release.
The Crates System
As a potential fallback for the meter system, the Special ammo crates system was resurfaced and iterated upon. The crates system has several benefits from a design perspective, including the ability to place crates in key zones around the map to help encourage player movement in non-objective or objective-optional modes and prevent coagulation around a single power position, as well as offering the ability to delay Special weapon pushes in round-based modes.
The crates system has also, based on its time in Competitive and Trials, done some positive things in terms of moving Special ammo distribution closer to healthy values. The delta between high- and low-performing players has moved back to 2.4 times, and it has led to less late-game snowballing, as players who do try to hoard Special ammo lose it upon death. Weapon balance is similarly improved, although not optimal, and there is significantly increased variety with Shotguns coming down to 59% of kills, Fusions and Snipers combining for 28% of kills, and all other Special weapons increasing to 13% of kills.
Ultimately, the crates system in isolation also has several major problems. It can present a frustrating amount of friction between playing the game how you want and playing the game how you need to if you want to run a Special ammo weapon. Additionally, in round-based modes, it is too frictionless to run double Special ammo weapons. It is also the first system we have introduced that allows players to directly influence the Special ammo economy of the opposing team, as controlling most crates can help starve the other team of Special ammo.
From a strategic perspective this is an interesting mechanic, but with no other way to earn Special ammo in gameplay it serves to be more frustrating than fun, and many players have struggled to adapt to the change, causing additional friction when playing in matchmade teams.
The “Blended” 1-1-1 System
Each of the above-listed systems has both positives and negatives. In isolation, each system helps and hurts a different part of the population, but none of them holistically solves the Special ammo problem.
  • The respawn system offers a safe distribution of ammo amongst players, and the ease of availability promotes special weapon diversity, but giving two kill’s worth to every player every life also results in far too many one-hit kills for a healthy sandbox.
  • The meter system allows players to earn Special ammo in a deterministic way and increases the rate of earning if you’re playing well, which feels rewarding for high-performing players. On the other hand, for low-performing players, it feels significantly worse, and it promotes a homogenous Special weapon meta.
  • The crate system allows us to promote movement around the map, alter push timings, reward map control, and give players more direct control over the amount of Special ammo in play for their opponents. It also causes significant friction by forcing conflict with optimal player flows and between matchmade teams, and it allows too much Special ammo in round-based modes.
The solution we have settled on is a blended system we refer to as the “1-1-1," taking parts of each of the above systems and combining them to solve the problems introduced by each system individually.
  1. Players will respawn each life with one kill worth of Special ammo for their chosen weapon. This serves as a stopgap for players to make sure they are never going long amounts of time with an empty weapon and encourages more players to continue to utilize Special weapons, albeit in a limited fashion. Setting the ammo at one instead of two kill’s worth ensures that there is not a surplus of Special ammo that is available for minimum effort. Spawning with one also functions as a healthy mid-point between spawning with none in the crates system and retaining all ammo with the meter.
  2. All Primary weapon final blows will drop a personal ammo brick that awards one kill’s worth of Special ammo. This is our deterministic, earnable method of distributing ammo in the blended system until our purpose-built version of the ammo meter is ready. What this means is that any of your final blows with a Primary weapon will drop an ammo brick that only you can pick up, regardless of whether the opponent you defeated had Special ammo on them. Likewise, if you defeat a player who has Special ammo using a Special ammo weapon, that will not drop a brick on the ground, so like the meter system, you cannot use Special to directly earn more Special. We will be initially introducing this specific portion of the system into the Competitive playlist starting next week, to help address player complaints about the economy in those modes.
  3. Crates will continue to exist, but their icon visibility range on the HUD has been decreased, and they will only provide a single kill’s worth of Special ammo when opened. These crates will continue to serve as points of interest around a map, but it will no longer be a requirement for players to interact with them to partake in the Special ammo system. They will instead function as a small bonus for players who take the time to engage with them and an optional mid-point step for players to gain Special ammo that is more effort than simply respawning with it, but less effort than getting a Primary weapon final blow.
We’re very excited to introduce this system sometime after the launch of The Final Shape, and we greatly appreciate your patience and feedback as we have continued experimenting in our ongoing effort to improve the Crucible.

Superblack Shader Now Available

With the final two BRAVE weapons available this week, players will receive the final quests needed to unlock the much-anticipated Superblack shader. Players can unlock the shader by earning the Superblack Key Alpha from Shaxx, and Superblack Key Omega from Arcite 90-40. Using both will grant you access to the Superblack Containment and to the shader. If you’re a Hunter…er…a player of any class, you’ll want to grab this new Shader and look your finest.

WINDOWS 7 AND 8 SUPPORT
Beginning on June 4, 2024, Destiny 2 is ending support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 operating systems. This decision is to align with Steam and Microsoft ending support for these systems.
Destiny 2 may continue running on these older operating systems after June 4, 2024, but we are unable to guarantee continued functionality after that date.
Players using these operating systems to play Destiny 2 are urged to upgrade to a more recent version of Windows or move to another platform so that their playtime won't be interrupted.
For more information, please view our Windows 7 and 8 Support article.
PANTHEON CHECKPOINTS
Due to an issue preventing players from progressing in The Pantheon when joining at a checkpoint, we have disabled checkpoints for The Caretaker and Zo'aurc, Explicator of Planets. We are attempting to resolve this issue as soon as possible and will provide an update when we have more information to share.
ARCHIE QUEST INFORMATION
We've seen confusion surrounding the weekly Archie Hunt quests and wanted to offer clarification. These quests are only intended to be available for one week each and were made with this time limit in mind. We understand that this is not ideal for all players, which is why we made the shader available for one completion for any of the weekly quests. The lore attached to these triumphs will become available to all players when The Final Shape launches on June 4.
KNOWN ISSUES
While we continue investigating various known issues, here is a list of the latest issues that were reported to us in our #Help Forum:
  • In Onslaught, players may be teleported back to the incorrect ADU location after completing certain phases.
  • The ADU in Onslaught can occasionally despawn.
  • On rare occasions, the Spark in Onslaught can be lost.
  • The portal to leave a boss phase in Onslaught will sometimes not open when killing a boss too quickly.
  • BRAVE weapons The Recluse and Hammerhead don’t highlight enemies like their previous models.
For a full list of emergent issues in Destiny 2, review our Known Issues article. Players who observe other issues should report them to our #Help forum.

2024.05.02 19:33 Michtrk Formation of socialist bloc and international relations 1946-1948

Communist Securing Power (almost same as in reality, minor changes in timeline) without Denmark
Romania
Bulgaria
Yugoslavia
Albania - There is not really anything different compared to reality. Liberated a bit later, 9th December 1944, by its own partisan forces. Hoxha has been in control since.
Poland
Hungary
Czechoslovakia
Paris Conference of Foreign Ministers
1.2.1946 to 15.2.1946
Discussed: Soviets again agree to join war against Japan, deportation of Germans, occupation zones in Germany established together with Allied Control Council, Rhineland established as “Joint Occupation Zone” before the UN control can established, Soviet agreed to quickly withdraw from Benelux and not interfere in its politics, aforementioned guarantee of Lowlands and Denmark sovereignty and territorial integrity happens already here.
Occupation of Germany
We are back in Europe.9th January 1946 war finally ended. The Red Army stands victorious, and evils of fascism are defeated. As millions celebrate, the mood in Washington and London is however tense. In Stalin now the West sees a new foe and Soviet strength frightens them, the West now tries to do everything to contain him, but until the fall of Japan the West must keep good relations. Already in January, Soviet forces retreated from southern Germany, giving administration to the British and American forces. Allied Control Council established. But the majority of valuable assets were already confiscated by the Soviets as the Western forces arrived, causing tensions. Retreat from Bavaria is viewed negatively by Red Army soldiers, who suffered heavy losses there. Soviet Unions begin to lobby for splitting Bavaria between Soviet controlled Franconia and US controlled Bavaria, this proposal is refused, however, influences US in changing borders in their zone, splitting Bavaria up. International Territory is controlled by Soviets for now, Western powers are invited there and are present together with them (“Joint Occupation Zone”)
Between 3rd and 17th May, the Hamburg Conference is held.
From April 1946 to March 1947 Nuremberg Trials were held Difference to OTL: Göring is already dead, Speer is executed.
United Nations Mandate in Germany (to 1950)
Last time we spoke about its formation and ideas behind it, but how did it work in its first days. UNMG was governed by the Allied Control Commission (not to be confused with Allied Control Council, that governed the rest of Germany) which was overseen by the United Nations Trusteeship Council. ACC was made up of the USSR, US, UK, and France. UNTC of the same states + Republic of China. To make decisions all sides had to agree, because every member can veto anything. Thus, no important decisions were made. UNMG was made up of 5 states (länder) that worked as other German states during the occupation with their own autonomous government. Devastated industry was controlled by Western powers. UNMG is politically part of Germany and thus later under political influence of the German government.
Truman Doctrine
Announced already in August 1946, Truman openly criticized “soviet expansionism”. Reasons: election of communist governments, Soviet pressure to open Turkish straits to their ships, Greek and unlike OTL also Chinese civil wars. The USSR abided by previous agreements and didn’t intervene in Greece until 1947 US intervention in China.
Paris Peace Conference – from December 1946 to April 1947, as OTL, only Italy got better terms, getting all of what became in reality the Trieste Territory. Result is worsening of Yugoslav relations with the West for some time. Faroe Islands independence.
1947
Denmark (1945-1949)
The Soviets really wanted to control Denmark to get access to the Atlantic from the Baltic, also possible bases for submarines in Denmark’s overseas territories. Western powers also wanted Denmark on their side, to prevent the Soviets entering the Atlantic. To stop the Kiel Canal being controlled by Soviet occupied Germany, Britain and the United States supported Danish claims on Southern Schleswig. Denmark became a major battleground of the early days of the Cold War.
Faroe and Greenland Crisis
24 September 1946: Faroe Islands independence referendum votes in favor of Independence, with a larger margin than OTL (68%), and the island declares independence. Denmark wanted to ignore it, king even dissolved its parliament, however UK and USA pressured Danish government into accepting islands self-determination (mostly due to fears of Denmark being controlled by communists), this issue was brought (in what was seen in Denmark as a degrading move) to the Paris Peace Conference, where powers agreed to Faroese Independence. The Republic of Faroe Islands was officially recognised on the 10th of March 1947.
The United States had bases stationed in Greenland since WW2, even though territorial administration was de-jure returned to Denmark, the US was still more or less controlling and occupying it. Denmark protested several times and Americans, first in January 1946. Americans then wanted negotiations about bases there, Denmark rejected, so the US promised to withdraw by the end of 1946 in the American-Danish agreement of 1946. American troops however still stayed there in 1947 and had to intentions of leaving. Denmark put a motion to UN and Paris negotiations, but nothing happened, the US only promised to withdraw in no time. This behavior distanced Denmark from the West. On the 28th of March 1947, Denmark signed a treaty with the Soviet Union, in which countries established diplomatic alliance, and the treaty had a secret part about Soviet bases in Greenland. This treaty was a nightmare for the United States. On 2nd of April 1947 Danish representatives were expelled from Greenland and the United States Greenland Administration Authority was proclaimed. Denmark was furious, US diplomats were expelled from the country and diplomatic relations ceased, motion was put to the UN, but was blocked by the USA. Occupation of Greenland led to massive condemnation from the socialist bloc. USSR (and rightfully so) condemned such action as violation of Hamburg Agreements about territorial integrity. Invasion was justified by Truman as necessary to protect US security and as an act to support self-determination. As together with the US occupation, declaration of Greenland Independence was issued, but the US had in reality no interest in the creation of any Greenland state.
Marshall Plan
As OTL US worked on the Marshall plan for European recovery, with goals of weakening of communist in mind. Relatively sooner compared to OTL the plan was proposed in June 1947, but was rejected by what is to become socialist bloc, citing US occupation of Greenland as one of reasons. The Marshall plan was limited as we will see later, but still somehow contributed to development. The Soviet response was the Molotov plan, it was not enough. The USSR itself lacked resources and in 1947 experienced a famine. Europe was still in very bad condition during this era.
TATO
Formed on 4th August 1947 initially between the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom (that’s why it is called Trans-Atlantic Treaty!). During August several countries joined: Faroe Islands, Portugal, Italy, Norway and Iceland (where it was met with widespread protests). Benelux countries and France refused. France however signed the TATO-French Treaty in 1948, securing friendly relations and opening the possibility of military cooperation, this worsened French relations with USSR (on the other hand France did indirectly condemn the occupation of Greenland with communique denouncing usage of force in international relations). We will return to France eventually, now only based on the French view of postwar international relations. France wanted to continue their cooperation with the USSR in the framework of the 1944 treaty, at the same time cooperating with the West. France wants to position itself as a third power in Europe. Ireland, Greece and Turkey established close relations with TATO. Sweden signed a treaty similar to the French, this was vocally criticized by the USSR.
Greek Civil War (to 1949)
1948
German Crisis
Back in Germany. Through 1946 allied cooperation in Germany somehow worked. In the Soviet zone KPD united with SPD and formed SED, this alliance did not happen in the South and UNMG. On 20 February 1947 local elections were held, separately in each state. In Soviet ones these were dominated by SED, in the south by CDU, results in UNMG were mixed. Political parties in the Soviet zone unified into a Democratic bloc.
Since 1947 there have been efforts to lay foundations of a separate south German state by western allies, this is vigorously opposed by Soviets. In the aftermath of the election Deutsche Wirtschaftskommission (DWK) was formed, a proto-government controlling the zone and claiming the rest. Separate government emerged in the south (unified since summer 1947 as “bizonia” ) the Länderrat based in Stuttgart. In March 1948 the Deutscher Volkskongress, de-facto German parliament was formed.
Negotiations about Germany in Paris (August 1947) – no agreement, London conference (February to May 1948) also no agreement. USSR criticizes Marshall plan for south Germany. In May 1948 USSR decided to push more aggressively for a unified Germany. In May a new Deutsche Mark was introduced in the Soviet zone, Bizone refused its circulation as it was done without their consent, instead introducing its own currency in July. This leads to a similar situation as in reality, as West Berlin is blockaded by the USSR in August. US airlift is less effective as they now have fewer corridors. Tensions rose, many feared the war may break up.
During the crisis Churchill proposed to Truman the declaration of South German state, this was rejected as too confrontational.
Austria
Borders changed in favor of the West. Already during the war in September 1945 a provisional government under Karl Renner was proclaimed. The UK and USA refused to recognise it, viewing it as a puppet state. Important change to OTL, in the Soviet part election was won by KPÖ, due to them merging with Social democrats, March 1946. New government headed by communists is formed, Renner becomes head of state. There is not much cooperation and communication between Allied powers. Later in 1946 a second government in Salzburg emerged (based on results from the western zone) headed by ÖVP. Both claim to be only some legitimate government of Austria. What is worse is that both governments have formed their own (para)military forces since 1948.
And with that we will leave.

2024.05.02 18:35 Sillymoosey How Bethesda should Enhance POI's

I have played about 300 hrs of this game, really is my type of game and am really excited with the May update and what they teased for the future. The one part of this game that actually bugs me is how planet POI's are currently done and I have thought a lot about these recently to fix this system.
  1. Planets should all get a hidden modifier called charted or uncharted. Any planet that is labeled as uncharted should only be able to spawn nature POI's with no man made POI's. Uncharted planets should be rare until you start getting to the far reaches of the star map obviously the settled space is largely explored and fought over but the high level planets in the outer areas become less and less explored.
  2. Nature POI's should have mega sized POI's added to the generation such as 2 km sized ancient forest, or mushroom forest, bio luminescent plant/animal zones, mega deserts, ect. For lifeless planets you could make petrified forests, water or volcanic geysers, crater lands, or have a mega crater that have extreme cold or heat hazards. These POI's not only cover huge areas of the generated land but should also have special resources like ultra rare minerals that are not normally found on the planets but spawn in these zones.
  3. Focus on more micro man made POI's. It is an awful feeling to have to explore 5 identical cryo labs that take 20 - 30 minutes to get through. This is sort of a bad luck system because you could get lucky and have unique POI's that you did not see on the last planet or you could get unlucky and see the same big POI multiple times within an hour. It is also easier to make 1000 tiny POI's that take 5 minutes to explore that have a loot chest and maybe a mini boss instead of a few large highly detailed POI's. If you run into the same little camp 3 times in a row it is also less disheartening since it only take a few minutes to clear and the terrain and placement can make them feel more distinct and less immersion breaking. Micro POI's also build out the procedural generation as there are now far more option making it less likely you get the same POI's one after the other with the added benefit of making large POI's rarer and more exciting to run into.
Rambling over, makes me feel better to put these thoughts down somewhere.

2024.05.02 18:10 John-ZhaoSugarlandTX Anybody obsessed with attending the Ivy League when they were in elementary or middle school?

I am curious if any of you guys were obsessed with attending the Ivy Plus (Ivy League + MIT, Stanford, Duke, Caltech, or Chicago) because for my (43M) son (currently 13M) who was diagnosed with autism at age 3 and could not speak until 3 and a half years old, during his time at elementary school until we moved to a bigger house in late 2022 in 6th grade, he got straight A's except in English/PE. Even though his English grades hovered between A-/B+ since 5th grade, it has significantly improved from a C+/B- when he was in 1st grade. During elementary school, he was even in advanced math (one grade level ahead), got straight A in that class, and he also won some school/district wide awards in STEM. He has won a district wide math award, a regional engineering award, as well as win the school's Geography Bee. Once we and the school helped pull him out of a special ed homeroom during the middle of kindergarten (around January 2017) to a mainstream homeroom (he is still on an IEP however), he nonetheless caught out and his behavior has massively improved. Starting 1st grade in 2017, we started buying him supplementary workbooks so he could learn English, Math, and Science during his free time and he was quite good at it. Even though he is a bit weaker in ELA, he nonetheless shown massive interest in STEM fields, such as math, chemistry (he took a glance at the periodic table when he was 6), physics (he loved reading Physics and Space/Astronomy books), engineering, and of course, technology, where his favorite thing to do is to use the computer. He started becoming obsessed with technology/computers at around 5 years old, and due to the fact we have multiple computers, he started knowing the basics about macOS, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP at the time. In fact, he also learned about the basics of iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod), and Android, and his passions on computers deepened when he watched a video on "Every Windows Startup Sound". When we were 5, we also bought him a globe where he basically explores various countries and their capitals during his free time, and we bought him large sheets of paper at Walmart showing all 45 presidents, the times and division table (up to 12), the Solar System, the periodic table, and the human anatomy. We also bought him a visual dictionary and he really loved reading it. Despite the fact he only took one advanced course, he was 2-4 grade levels ahead, often using the supplementary books we bought for him to learn and he finished these books in a matter of weeks.
Even though we are totally fine with him attending community college, ever since he was 7, he has been dreaming of attending HYPSM universities, knowing that many of the people he aspire to such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Larry Ellison attended some of those top schools. During my son's free time, he loves to watch tech videos, science/history documentaries, learn computer programming (Java, C++, C, Python, Swift, Kotlin, Go, Ruby, R, etc), and explore around with technology and computers. He has been infatuated with computers since he was 5 and would spend hours tinkering around with technology. We even hired a piano tutor for him and even though the piano tutor mostly helps with his fingers/notation, he has self taught and memorized some pieces such as Claire De Lune, Arabesque, Waltz No 7, Grande valse brillante, Moonlight Sonata 1st/2nd movement, Mozart Fantasy No 4, and Schubert Impromptu Op 90 no 2 in a matter of months or even weeks. In Summer of 2022, he even won a piano competition in Boston. Even though we don't pressure him, he is very self motivated and wanted to be at the pinnacle.
By the time he reached 2nd grade, we started taking him to piano lessons, and that was where he developed an interest for classical music, making classical music his favorite genre. He even studied various composers, including some medieval (Hildegard von Bingen) and renaissance (Josquin Des Prez) as well as baroque (Bach), classical (Mozart), romantic (Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin), and modern (Debussy, Ravel) ones as well. Also by this point, we started buying him 4/5th grade math books and science books and his 1st grade teacher even gave him a high school US history and World history textbook and he enjoyed reading several pages of it per day to explore various historical events, such as Louis XIV, Napoleon, the Dutch East India company, the European Scramble of Africa, the Weimar Republic, and US reconstruction after the Civil War. By this time, he was also obsessed with figures such as Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Galileo Galilei, Leonardo Da Vinci, Rene Descartes, Jean Jacques Rousseau, and current tech entrepreneurs Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, and Elon Musk. Basically, after a year of playing piano at 8, he started playing pieces such as Mozart Facile Sonata No 16, Mozart Turkish March, Beethoven Fur Elise, Bach Prelude No 1, and Beethoven Ecossaise. Also, the most important thing happened in his life by the time and that is, he started learning how to install various VMs on Virtualbox/VMware, and the year after at 8 years old, he was introduced to programming by his older cousin (something that will change his life), where he started learning HTML and CSS first, then moved on to JavaScript and Python, and afterwards, to Java and now, he is learning C, C++, Swift, Kotlin, and and R on his own on Udemy and edX and is currently working on a mobile game.
In 3rd grade, the school principal realized my son was very smart in math and after my son asked the principal to be put to advanced math, he was put in a 4th grade classroom for math. He essentially excelled in that class, and in one instance during 4th grade in a 5th grade math homeroom in early 2021, he was the only student out of 25 to receive over an 80 on one test (he received a 95) and therefore, he was the only student who didn't have to retake the exam. Even though the 4th grade teacher back in 2019 really wanted him to be in her science and social studies and he excelled on those, showing my wife and I extremely high grades, the principal and 3rd grade homeroom teacher didn't authorize the move, instead insisting on making him stay in the 3rd grade for these two subjects which made him kinda unhappy. By the time he reached 4th grade when the grading system got changed from numbers to letters, whenever you get an A in conduct and effort in every class, you get to eat ice cream every quarter in the cafeteria and eat pizza at a local Pizza store every June. Turns out, my son got an A in conduct and effort in every class in every quarter, even in English and PE, where he would usually get a B to A- grade but an A in conduct and effort. Also, despite the fact my son is weak in English, he nonetheless got his grade up from a C/C+ (equivalent to a 2) during 1st grade to a B/B+ during 6th grade (2022). The school started enrolling students in FirstInMath during 4th grade and during 4th grade, my son would play some math games and learn math along the way, and he essentially scored higher than any student at his school and amongst the top in his school district, and by the end of 4th grade, my son had some knowledge in Algebra/Pre-Algebra already. During 5th grade in early 2022, my son won the school's science fair where he developed an LED glove and he was inducted to the local science museum to compete with 5-8 graders in his county. He was ready to do the next big project in Robotics and computer science during 6th grade but because we moved to another district next door by buying a bigger house, he wasn't able to continue. In the early half of 6th grade when he was still at the old district, everybody at his school (4-6th grade only, no K3) was made to take the Geography Bee for the first time, and he came out as a winner and was inducted to a county-wide tournament (again, for another subject). Even though he couldn't map every single country (some obscure island nations in the Pacific), he could nonetheless map every European/Asian/North/South American country and list the capitals of every European country and most Asian/North/South American countries. He even won a county-wide math award as well early in his 6th grade. He has gotten perfect math MCAS scores during 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, but his ELA hovered around Partially Meeting Expectations and Meeting Expectations and has not taken the MCAS since. During summer 2022, before 6th grade and right after his 11th birthday, he also registered to a music competition at the NE Conservatory in Boston where he actually won against 11 year olds playing Mozart Fantasy No 4 and Chopin Grande Valse Brilliante. Even though we have a piano tutor for my son who mostly helps with his fingers/notation, he has self taught and memorized some pieces such as Claire De Lune, Arabesque, Waltz No 7, Grande valse brillante, Moonlight Sonata 1st/2nd movement, Mozart Fantasy No 4, and Schubert Impromptu Op 90 no 2 in a matter of months or even weeks. Even though we don't pressure him, he is very self motivated and wanted to be at the pinnacle.
After starting online school and moving to my uncle and aunt's house in Quincy in February 2023 because he wanted to push himself further, he started with the 2nd half of 6th grade and 7th grade math at an online self paced school he wanted to attend to try to accelerate his education and by mid-April, he started the 7th grade and Algebra. By mid-August, he finished that and took a month break, travelling to Europe (Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Ljubljana, Salzburg, and Munich) with my uncle (78M) and aunt (76F). In October, he started 8th grade and took Geometry/Algebra II and even though he got straight A, his English grades actually did improve to an A- at the online school, and by mid-January, he started the 9th grade as well as Pre-Calculus while waiting for his 65k private school to answer to him.
My uncle and aunt is also talking to the online school about allowing his 9th grade credits to transfer (he does take some courses at a local community college in the meantime to make himself more competitive and to help those transfer as 9th grade credits). I have heard that my son is looking at SAT content and doing some practice problems for the SAT, looking up AP courses he will take during 10th grade like AP World History, AP Calculus BC, AP Computer Science A, AP Chemistry, AP Physics C, AP French, etc, and he is also looking at the possibility of taking Multivariable Calculus and LineaAbstract Algebra in alter years. He has also thought about joining several STEM related clubs at the new school and joining the student government at his future school, and is considering hard on AMC 12, currently working on some AMC 12 problems as well as looking up IMO, USACO, USAPhO, USNCO, as well as Intel's ISEF.

2024.05.02 17:56 Haqgun Molten Strike/Fendzon - Patch #21

Introduction
Molten Strike and Fend both got buffs with the recent patch and both skills feel much better to play overall. Neither build is an optimal mapper and theyve got a few noob traps in them that make both awkward to play through for the first time. While neither are top tier builds ive enjoyed playing both variants both through levelling and mapping. If you enjoy playing different builds this is a great candidate; If you only care about quickly clearing maps and efficiently grinding XP with the top meta builds this isn't the build for you.
My goal is to keep things organized and readable while still being detailed. This is going to be my findings through what Ive played and what I have (and haven't) found success with:
~~~~~~~~Skills~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fend I have nothing special to add here, Fend got buffed with patch #21 to now grant IAS per level. This change makes a huge difference in how the skill feels to use, making the skill overall feel a lot smoother to use with non-endgame gear.
Molten Strike Molten Strike is a weird skill. Its a damage converting skill with a flat fire component added on. Each ball Molten Strike creates on hit deals 85% of your weapons damage while converting 60% of that to fire. The strange part about it (as of writing this guide) is that the damage conversion doesn't apply until after enemy resists are taken into account. This means the skill will only deal its flat fire damage to physical immune enemies until you break their immunity. I assume this isnt intended and it leads to some extra hurdles to jump through with gear but ill go over that later. Each ball from Molten Strike can individually proc on-striking effects; on-attack procs will only go off on weapon swing against any given target. For Fendzon its an important part of the build as it allows for dealing with physical immune enemies without relying on your allies or merc. As its own build Molten Strike relies heavily on weapons with strong on-striking procs; This means Molten Strike is a much more expensive build, relying heavily on expensive runewords when compared to Fend.
The skills for either variant of this build are weird. Jab doesnt feel like a good place to put points now that Fend gives IAS per level; Since you only ever have 40 points of main skills + synergies that leaves a ton of points available for passives. The unfortunate part starts to be noticed when you look at the scaling of any skill the build uses. Almost all Passive and Magic skills don't scale well enough to justify maxxing; The lack of scaling leads to a lot of confusion on where to put skill points and is mostly up to personal preference so ill give some insight Ive found on each:
Inner Sight A solid but underwhelming skill. While levelling its what i put points into after maxxing Fend and Molten Strike. Its a good amount of defense reduction which does start to help out a lot with hit chance going into hell. Once you have endgame gear it falls off in its overall usefulness which makes it a fairly disappointing skill to invest into.
Lethal Strike This is a good passive, granting a solid amount of critical strike chance which for almost any amazon build is great. As with most of the other passives its scaling at higher levels starts to fall off but of the passives its not the worst one to invest into.
Phase Run Phase run is a difficult skill. Granting a flat 30% Faster Run/Walk and Faster Hit recovery is an amazing skill to use on any Spearzon variant. Being a Passive and Magic skill its scaling makes it feel like a bad choice to invest into. I only ever put 1 point into the skill, the uptime does get better as the level gets higher but not at a rate that i felt was worth the investment so i just keep track of when I need to recast it. In spite of the poor scaling and being a clunky skill to use at low skill levels its an incredibly important skill for mapping because of the stats it grants.
Dodge/Avoid/Evade This is where the first noob trap comes in; 1 point in each dodge passive isn't enough to enable this build to succeed in the endgame. The lack of a shield with this build means you need to make up a lot of different stats you would normally have easy access to in a javelin build, block chance is one of them. Dodge overall is much stronger than block, no longer having dodge frames is a massive strength of these passive over blocking, though you cant get as high dodge chance as you could block. 7 hard points in each gets you to around 30-35% dodge (with +skills from charms/gear) which is a massive difference from the ~14% from 1 hard point. This ends up being an absolutely MASSIVE amount of survivability, to the point that without the ~30% dodge chance the build feels incredibly difficult to play.
Penetrate Nothing special here, worth a single point and has ok scaling but another very underwhelming passive skill.
Valkyrie This is ultimately where i ended up putting most of my remaining skill points. Valks have Fend as a synergy which helps its damage out a decent amount though sadly uses the lightning spear skills. Theyre nice enough tanks and aggro sponges for maps and can handle most base-game areas reasonably well. Level 27 Valkyrie is the last notable level as its when they get rare tiaras but this isn't important and not worth chasing.
~~~~~~~~Gear~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Getting the right gear is the most difficult part of playing a Molten Strike/Fendzon. Due to the lack of a shield, gap closing ability and being a melee build you need to make up a lot of key stats which ends up being at the costs of other QOL stats. Stats should generally always be just enough to equip your gear and the rest in vitality which is why I don't have a section on them.
~~Levelling~~ Malice/Strength/Steel runewords in any decent spear base you can find will keep you going for a while. Obedience in an Amazon SpeaKelpies Snare/Lycanders Flank are all great options that will get you through the game, all around level 42
Hearth helm was a great option early, granting Cannot Be Frozen. Unique Helms like Duskdeep/RockstoppePeasant Crown/Stealskull are all good options if available.
Stealth armor is the easy choice early on but swapping to Hustle when possible is ideal. Twitchthroe/Spirit Shroud are both great budget armor options
Bloodfist/Lava Gout are really the only budget glove options id recommend, they're common and cheap on trade and absolutely amazing until you get to endgame.
Any blue/rare belt with resists, FHR and/or life will be great. Blood belts are great but unreliable. Bladebuckle is the best budget option if you cant find a good rare/crafted belt.
30+ FRW/res blue/rare boots will be great early. Sanders or Cow Kings boots are also the only ones id really recommend, high FRW with some added stats and utility though any high FRW boots with useful stats will be good.
For jewelry, anything that gives resists or life or mana leech are gonna be great early on. Raven Frost and Carrion wind are both reasonably cheap on trade and are actually the two rings im going to recommend later on for endgame. Mahim-Oak or Saracens are great budget options if you can find them on trade, if not a crafted Scintillating amulet will be very solid until you can find a better option.
~~Endgame~~ Once you start getting to mapping you will want to aim for as close to the following stats as possible:
50% Damage Reduction 75% All Res 86% Faster Hit Recovery (56% with Phase Run Active)
alongside those you'll want all the usual melee stats as high as you can reasonably get them: Damage Life Leech FRW
~Weapons
a Breath of the Dying War Pike is the cheapest and best option for both Molten Strike and Fend. The amount of damage, IAS, dual leech and stats it gives is basically unbeatable as far as spears go. Unfortunately as of writing other options like Stoneraven and Steel Pillar aren't nearly strong enough to content against eBotD, even with max sockets and runes; They're good options for getting into mapping but neither will come anywhere close to the strength of eBotD.
Phoenix in a Matriarchal Spear has been a genuinely good option for Molten Strike. A strong and consistent on-striking proc, redemption, nice enhanced damage, Ignores Target Defense and fire pierce all on a single item have made it so far the best option Ive used for group and solo mapping.
Destruction is an option Ive been looking to play around with but haven't as of writing this gotten the runes to be able to make one.
As for other proc-based Molten Strike options there unfortunately arent many outside Phoenix; Rift is awful do not use Rift. The main proc damage from Rift comes from its on-attack Frozen Orb proc which doesnt play as nicely with Molten Strike as it does with Fend and the rest of the stats on Rift just make it a waste of runes.
~Helms Crown of Ages has (unfortunately) been the best and most accessible option for helms. Notably giving up to 30 all resists and 15% Damage Reduction and 30% FHR with 2 sockets its the most well rounded and cheapest option Ive found. Best in Slot would probably be a 3 socketed Vampire Gaze with 3 15IAS/15 All Resist Jewels but because this is my main build this season I cant afford one to say for sure.
~Armor
a 4 socketed Leviathan with Um runes is what Ive been using. Leviathan gives good DR and compared to Shaftstop is much cheaper while still allowing for 50% DR 4 socketed Shaftstop with Um runes is probably best in slot but again because this is my main build Im too poor to afford one
Fortitude is (in my opinion) the other big noob trap of this build. Not giving any DR and only half the required all resist from the armor makes you uncomfortably squishy in the endgame. Your damage with eBotD is already so high that pushing it higher with Fortitude feels like a waste when compared to what you give up.
~Gloves Laying of Hands is the cheapest and easiest option overall. 20IAS with fire resist and damage. Steelrends being buffed makes them a genuinely good option if you're already close to the steep 184 strength requirement; Using Leviathan and a 3 socketed Vampire Gaze makes these the best glove option overall.
~Belt Verdungos or String of Ears are the two best options here. DR and either vitality or life leech are just very strong stats. Nosferatu's coil with an IAS corruption is an option but its very niche.
~Boots Boot options are fairly underwhelming for this build. War Travelers are overall the best but really any good pair would work. Ive used Natalya's, Aldurs, Gore Riders, Sanders, Cow Kings and Immortal Kings, none of them stand out as noticeably better but the 40FRW boots were definitely a big help.
~Jewelry
Atmas Scarab is from what ive found the only good amulet option. Because Molten Strike is both bugged and a very good proc skill it means that you can break physical immunes very very quickly with the otherwise disappointing Atmas proc. The -100% physical resist from Amplify Damage is a huge damage boost to Molten Strike (I feel like an idiot typing this but this is just the reality of the situation) and Fend.
Raven Frost and Carrion Wind have been very good as long as Ive been using them. Carrion Wind's Twister procs happen frequently and are great for stunning scary enemies like Blood Lords before you can get an Amp proc off.
~Charms With my gear Im using a mixture of Passive and Magic skillers, all resist grand charms and max damage/attack rating grand charms. Torch and Anni when possible are nice as always. Mainly you want to use your charm slots to fill out stats you need so FHresist/FRW grand charms are also good options depending on what gear you have.
~Mercenaries Ive found the most success with two different mercs depending on which skill Im using:
--Act 1 with a Mist bow was amazing for eBotD Fend, completely fixing any attack rating issues i had while giving a nice damage buff. Paired with a Hearth helm and Fortitude the merc was great for general crowd control and clearing the few unbreakable physical/fire dual immunes that came up
--Act 5 with Silence or Plague has been great for Phoenix Molten Strike, Cleansing is super helpful for most builds and the free Might aura offset the damage lost from using Phoenix; Plague will overwrite Atmas Amp proc when it goes off which is important to keep in mind.
~~~~~~~~Gameplay~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For mapping ive always avoided any map that has +Damage, Conviction or any attack rating increasing aura (Precision, Blessed Aim, Concentration) or Decrepify procs. As of writing i never run any Plateau maps due to the surplus of Oblivion Knights, un-leechable Skeleton Archers and mana draining Specters. Because the build is naturally dual element (kind of) you don't really need to worry about stuff like physical/fire absorb or resist.
For Ubers/DClone I haven't tried either with this build.
~~~~~~~~Summary~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Overall this build has a lot of room to grow. It works once you get your bearings and figure out how everything works and what you need to succeed but it can be a struggle before then. Ive enjoyed the time spent working on getting it to work and mapping with it. Hopefully in the future unique spears in general get a much needed buff and the skill issues this build has get sorted out. As of now its a fine build to run if you're not worried about efficiency and don't mind playing a normal melee build.

A note on Anti-cheat:
We are acutely aware of and actively combating the current state of cheating. Our team includes skilled engineers, data analysts, security experts, and machine learning experts whose full-time jobs are centered around anti-cheat. Talking too much about anti-cheat can provide too much information to those who build, sell, or use cheats. And yet, if we say nothing, many will feel we aren’t doing enough.
Easy-Anti Cheat is our base software. It acts as the first line of defense and a catch-all for blatant, non-careful cheating. After that, we have added additional layers of prevention methods and anti-cheat tools and software that obfuscate, check telemetry, hardware behavior and more. With each passing week, we add more rules based on our own data and adjust the old ones. This is because anti-cheat is a game of cat and mouse. With every change we make, the cheat makers respond, and we switch tactics and they follow suit.
When we catch cheaters, depending on the level of offense, we may provide a 7-day ban or a permanent ban. If the offender is cheating for a second time, the ban will become permanent.
We have also introduced a video report program on Discord, where you can capture cheating when you see it and provide the video as evidence. This is to catch cheaters who evade our current anti-cheat preventions and to provide our community of players with a place to report hard evidence. From these reports, we will be able to better understand the types of cheats that evade our current systems.
Please know that we are developing several new technologies and techniques that we will test and deploy as soon as they are ready. We will never back down from this challenge.

Environmental Factors:
  1. Exposure to Toxins (Importance: 7/20):
    • Scientific Basis: Environmental toxins, such as air pollution and heavy metals, can accelerate aging and increase the risk of chronic diseases (Landrigan et al., 2018).
    • Actionable Steps: Minimize exposure to pollution, choose organic foods when possible, and filter your water.
  2. Access to Clean Water (Importance: 6/20):
    • Scientific Basis: Clean water is essential for overall health and proper bodily functions.
    • Actionable Steps: Ensure access to safe drinking water and support initiatives promoting clean water access globally.
Psychological Factors:
  1. Optimism and Positive Attitude (Importance: 5/20):
    • Scientific Basis: Studies suggest that optimists tend to live longer and have better health outcomes (Kim et al., 2019).
    • Actionable Steps: Cultivate a positive outlook, practice gratitude, and focus on the good things in life.
  2. Resilience and Adaptability (Importance: 4/20):
    • Scientific Basis: The ability to cope with stress and adapt to change is crucial for maintaining physical and mental well-being throughout life.
    • Actionable Steps: Develop healthy coping mechanisms, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and maintain a flexible mindset.
Future Possibilities:
  1. Mind Transfer and Digital Immortality (Importance: 3/20):
    • Scientific Basis: The concept of transferring consciousness to a non-biological substrate, while still theoretical, could offer a path to extend life beyond the limitations of the physical body (Sandberg & Bostrom, 2008).
  2. Cryonics (Importance: 2/20):
    • Scientific Basis: Cryopreservation of the body after death, with the hope of future revival, remains a speculative technology but represents a potential avenue for extending lifespan (Ettinger, 2002).
  3. Space Colonization and Exploration (Importance: 1/20):
    • Scientific Basis: As we venture beyond Earth, the challenges and opportunities of space travel may lead to new discoveries and technologies that could impact human longevity.
Conclusion:
While the quest for longevity is ongoing, the convergence of various factors, from healthy lifestyle choices and preventative measures to emerging technologies and future possibilities, offers a promising outlook for extending human lifespan. By embracing a holistic approach that prioritizes physical, mental, and social well-being, and by staying informed about scientific advancements, we can increase our chances of living longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.

2024.05.02 17:30 insomnibird Oh no, my bad strategy stopped working at a crucial moment and I feel very alone

I basically got through my entire education by relying on the last-minute adrenaline rush. It’s not working, and I have to hand in an essay tomorrow.
I feel like I can’t say much about what happened to me. It was bad and it upended my life.
The point is, I think maybe living with this level of PTSD has taken the deadline adrenaline crutch away. I keep losing big chunks of time staring at the wall or scrolling or plucking my eyebrows/pulling my hair out.
And I feel kind of interested in that, like I’m watching myself from a distance.
“Huh, interesting. No essay for you. What do?”
On one level I do really care about this essay, it’s an interesting topic, I know I can do it. I’ve written so many essays at the last minute. I’ve even managed to pretty much map this one out.
On the other hand I just… am not doing it. Or anything else. And I kind of don’t care.
After what happened to me I lost my job. I have been precariously employed by an agency since then, but I haven’t been able to work at all lately.
It was a big deal for me that I identified an alternative career I could see myself in, and that I applied and was accepted into this course. It meant being hopeful about the future, it meant having a direction. I already had to drop a unit this semester thanks to massive upheaval, and that was devastating.
This is the first major assessment task I have to hand in. I’ve already been given an extension, I can’t bear asking for more time. I just can’t. And I can’t bear to reach out to my friends now. I’m so sick of needing help.
I think part of it is that I feel so silenced by the legal process and by society in general. I want to talk about what happened to me but I’m not allowed to. Even here, I don’t feel free to speak.
I do have a therapist, and I have friends. But every avenue of support is finite and I feel like my need for support is too big.
In one way I still intend to write this thing. I know it’s important. Maybe I will. But after weeks of being unable to study I was relying on my last minute brain to kick in. And it’s not. I feel like I just lost another thing I thought I could rely on.
I usually try to laugh at myself- not in a mean way, it’s just that trying to find the humour in situations helps me to cope and connect with people. But this doesn’t feel funny.
I don’t know what posting this will achieve. I feel so sad.

Finding Your Way in Appalachia: The Definitive Fallout 76 Quest Order Guide
Welcome fellow Vault Dwellers, this is a tweaked and added upon version of u/SuperPippo5111’s(https://www.reddit.com/useSuperPippo5111/) Finding Your Way in Appalachia: The Definitive Fallout 76 Quest Order Guide he made a while ago. I'm planning to update this guide when I can/feel like and, hopefully, eventually include every quest that's currently part of the game and added in future. If you have any complaints or something that I should add to the guide, please comment down below.
Steam Guide Version here (Steam gets updated first) : https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3237199626
Some general advice for new players:
Disclaimer: This is just a recommended quest order for full immersion and is not focused on getting you to the endgame as fast as possible. Keep in mind that the optimal quest order in Fallout 76 can vary depending on the player's preferences and objectives. There is no one "correct" quest order, as some players prefer to complete the main storyline first, while others prefer to explore the world and complete side quests along the way. This is just my take on it. Also, you don't need to always stick with the quest order strictly. If you see an event on the map or other activities you'd like to participate in then by all means do whatever you like. You can always come back to the quests at a later stage.
Sometimes in notes I will mention that there is a unique gear tied to a quest, note that the level of the unique gear will vary with the current level of the player character at the time of quest completion. Because this is the only chance a unique gear can be obtained, it may be desirable to defer completing this quest until reaching level 50.
When you see an (S) or next to a quest this will mean that this quest is a side quest aka this doesn't need to be done right now it can be done whenever you feel like doing it as it shouldn't affect the main story in any way I have however put them in places I find as natural stopping points for these quests like when you’d naturally stumble upon them for example.
Key
Bullet Points • - These are representative of major task changes if an entry does not have one chances are it's because the task is in the general vicinity of your location and you can do them then and there.
(1/X) - Quest Stages, These are representative of the current stage of the quest you are on and can be found at the end of each line if applicable. I will add exact details later on.
(Optional) - Optional quest that you don’t need to do but are worth doing for extra rewards or story.
(S) - Side quests have nothing to do with the main story for the most part but offer good rewards
(A) - Ally quests Two allies, Sofia Daguerre and Beckett, offer unique questlines and an overarching story, at the end of which they can be romanced if one decides to pursue that option. This provides the player with a temporary XP boost, Lover's Embrace, upon sleeping in a bed with the romanced ally nearby. The other three allies (the raider punk, settler forager, and settler wanderer) only offer radiant quests.
(D) - Daily quests, offer the same quest every from when you did it the last time, can offer unique rewards
(E) - Expeditions, Expeditions is a PvE game mode of repeatable missions in Fallout 76. The mode takes players to explore and travel outside of Appalachia, and encounter NPCs and enemies along the way.
(R) - Repeatable Quests, These quests can be played as frequently as desired.

Vapiano P2: Italian Food Made in Germany
Readers, welcome back. In Part 1 of this series, we trace Mark Korzilius' entrepreneurial journey from his initial setbacks in life to the founding of Vapiano, a novel concept in the restaurant industry. We explore the intricacies of Vapiano's innovative approach, from its fresh ingredients and dynamic atmosphere to its data-driven operational model, shedding light on the elements that propelled its rapid success and transformed dining experiences. Before venturing into cities like Dusseldorf, Munich, and Frankfurt, Mark and his team perfect restaurant operations in Hamburg emphasizing their priority of quality growth over top-line growth at all costs. Despite rapid expansion in the early years, Vapiano maintains profitability, even catching the eye of industry giants like McDonald's. Yet, the further the expansion goes the more it brings operational challenges and increased costs, leading to significant investments and the accumulation of debt. In this post, we will continue on this thread but for better context and for those who haven’t done so already, I would encourage you to read Part 1 first. Vapiano P1: Italian Food Made in Germany (substack.com) Let's dig in.

More Growth

We are now five years into the Vapiano venture, and the customer profile is starting to shift away from the original plan. In the 2007 annual report is says: “The Vapiano concept was developed with the aim of giving professionals, working people a good opportunity to spend their lunch break. In the meantime, the customer base has expanded significantly to include families and tourists. The changes in the customer base have led to the occupancy of individual restaurants being spread throughout the day.” The management team is much focused on improving the experience and keeping things fresh, so that only five years after unveiling its first shop design, star designer Matteo Thun is still very much involved in the design process. Even as the broader Germany economy in 2008 slows to just 1% growth, the group keeps growing aggressively, although the pace of expansion in self-own and operated sites decelerates. Three new self-owned restaurants are opened, including a third one in Berlin. But more importantly the company uses the year to look inwards, optimizing own restaurants and expanding further the pool of franchisees. Five more franchise licenses are added in Germany and for the first time the UK is entered.
Testimony to the attractiveness of the concept is the fact that same-store-sales (a metric to measure revenue of a particular restaurant this year in comparison to the same restaurant’s revenue last year) across the board grows by 11%. The concept has broad appeal, there is strong organic growth and management is on top of its game here. When operating as a multi-site quick service restaurant chain like Vapiano, logistics and supply chains becomes key. You want to get your central functions so well-oiled, that opening new sites becomes cooky cutter, particularly when you want to attract new franchisees. Indeed, the concept and brand appeal are important factors to attract top quality franchisees but backend, support functions are equally important for the homogeneity of the products, the consistency of the brand and the customer experience. The group starts further deepening its relations to companies in the areas of goods trading, logistics and services which ensures that high quality products are procured, and supply chains are robust. Another focus for the group is to build supply contracts directly with manufacturers rather than going through middlemen, which leads to significant cost savings. And because of the aggressive role out of new restaurants it makes sense to enter a long-term system partnership for kitchen planning, kitchen construction and after sales service thereby significantly lowering the costs for opening a new site. From 2008 onwards, Vapiano manages to source the central kitchen for all new restaurants from a single source.
Overall, the group books another year of stellar growth reaching over 42 million euros in turnover. This is quadrupling the 10 million euros achieved just three years ago. This type of growth is extremely rare for a restaurant business. Operating profits are now close to 4.3 million euros but as in the prior year, seven million euros are invested back into growth and maintenance of the business. Fortunately, because of the strong operational cash flow and favorable working capital movements the overall debt burden only increases modestly.

Unique Ways

We are now in the year 2009 and things are progressing well for Vapiano. The following is good reminder that each business is unique, each restaurant concept is unique and while there are always similarities that can be applied, you always ought to go back to first principle of the value proposition, concept or business model at hand and build your thinking and strategy from the ground up, irrespective of how the “others” in the industry might be doing things. While your first intuition may lead you to believe that you would have to hire lots of cooks as the restaurant chain expands, the Vapiano concept demands something different. To that end the company is starting to implement a unique hiring procedure. Instead of conducting individual one-by-one interviews for cooking roles where induvial go through their CVs, a question-and-answer session and perhaps some practical cooking demonstration, prospective candidates are instead selected through casting events. For that purpose, all applicants are gathered in one venue, on one day, and given different task. This approach allows the company to assess the group dynamics and identify individuals who would fit in well. CEO Mirko Silz emphasizes the importance of a cheerful and spirited individual, as most of the work in front cooking revolves around interacting with guests. Being able to cook is simply not an important skill for the role here. The food is designed in a modular approach with a set menu, the execution of which can be trained within three days. Mirko says: “Our people have to be in good spirits and cheery, as 90 % of the work is in the front cooking area with guests. Someone who is shy has no chance with us. Our people act on the big stage. I always say: everything disappears, character remains.” The firm needs entertainers, not cooks.

https://preview.redd.it/jc10vndno0yc1.png?width=1456&format=png&auto=webp&s=7f9fa449bdaa87063e2627c3f72a7e10f6a22299

In terms of the general economy, we are now in the aftermath of the Great Financial Crises. Germany is now in a full-blown recession and is experiencing a 5.7% contraction in its economic activity. Times are tough but Vapiano is unfazed. To the contrary, the group’s growth explodes. Four own-operated sites, four Joint Ventures, additional franchisee sites and new licenses are added so that by the end of the year there is a grant total of 55 restaurants across 12 European countries. The network sees growth in various German cities, including additional sites in Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Berlin with a total of 37 self-operated sites in Germany alone.
It’s common in franchising, for one franchisee to have multiple sites, especially if they are good operators. Big if and if they can prove that they can implement a process and local management that ensures smooth operations in one site freeing up own attention capacity to take on another site. Not a small challenge but if that happens it’s a win-win situation for both as the group knows they are partnering with a known and proven operator, generating additional revenues and profits and it’s great for the franchisee as he can grow his business portfolio with partners he knows, trusts and issues that have been battletested.
The whole apparatus starts to work like a well-oiled machine. Revenue jumps by 56% to almost 69 million euros, operating profits reach 9.5 million euros. Impressive. Strong growth is there, yes, but it’s expensive. The expansion involves big sites, each requiring over one million euros in capital expenditure and a substantial amount of footfall to cover operating costs and recoup the initial capital outlay. 23 million euros are spent on capex but because operating cash f low is not sufficient to cover all costs the company needs to borrow an additional 12.5 million euros and raise c. 4 million in equity from investors. Through this equity round a new set of investors are joining the company, Hans-Joachim Sander (who also joins the advisory board) and Gisa Sander. The two are heirs to the very well-known German cosmetics label "Wella".
Things are changing now. Gregor Gerlach, one of the founding investors, is now leading the supervisory board. He is stepping forward and expresses the intention for Vapiano to accelerate its growth, particularly internationally, in countries where there’s presence already. This is a logical strategic move, capitalizing on local brand recognition that has been built, leveraging local suppliers and knowledge, ensuring a smoother international expansion process. Amidst all the group’s success, a small cautionary note emerges. In September of 2009, a recently opened restaurant is facing insolvency. Although in the beginning the site is experiencing footfall and spent per the plan, the location is starting to experience atypical sales development thereafter. This is certainly new. The group decides it isn’t feasible running the property independently, emphasizing the need for the personal commitment of entrepreneurs, particularly in small and medium-sized cities. This might be a nothing burger – pun intended – but time will tell.
Fun fact: all olive trees in the restaurants are real and sourced directly from Italy, handpicked for every location.

Changing Ways

In the following year, 2010, the entire gastronomy industry in Germany is contracting by 0.4%. Not Vapiano however. The group is still growing sites and revenue climbs from 69 million to 85 million euros with operating profits jumping above 10 million for the first time in the company’s history. Most of the cash generated from operations is used for the expansion with the remaining cash used to repay some of the 27-million-euro debt load it has outstanding by year end 2009.
Something feels different though. Yes, there is top line growth, but the rate of growth is slowing and interestingly the operating margin is falling as well, even if ever so slightly. Slippage creeping in? That year the group starts to explore projects that are tangent to the business but are arguably beyond its core competency. New concepts are being introduce such as the loyalty program that can be used by customers across all of Europe which is great for data collection purposes and building customer habit and stickiness. A female oriented magazine called “Vapiano Lady’s” is now being published. The “Viva Oliva” campaign is founded: an Olive Tree Festival which begins on Easter Sunday and runs for two weeks. During the time of “Viva Oliva” special attention is paid to products with olive content and in 2011, the Olive Tree Festival format is expanded to Vapiano restaurants abroad. All these new elements are designed to build customer connections and brand loyalty. Interestingly the same year, while all these new project and elements are starting up, perhaps a time to internally consolidate and clean up, the company announces it would abandon its current growth strategy and replace it with one that is much more aggressive. The new goal: doubling the number of sites from 2011 and 2014. Remember that we are now starting from a much larger base than the years before. The big focus is Europe, pushing the concept of “Fresh Casual Dining”, a category the company has invented in the German market. Based on the raw data it makes sense to hit the accelerator, after all same store sales (or Like-for-Like, LfL) grows 9% in Europe, clearly there is good demand for the product. What plays into management’s ambition and believes at the time, is the change ways of eating habits across Europe. The trend is moving away from heavy and fatty foods towards fresh and healthy meals and management is keen to lean into this, capitalising on customers embracing their newly found love for fresh and healthy foods.
While all of this is unfolding, a telltale sign emerges on the horizon. In 2011 the original co-founders and shareholders Kent Hahne, Klaus Rader, Friedemann Findeis are selling their Vapiano ownership stakes. Kent Hahne was responsible for the company’s international expansion from 2004 to 2011, and he keeps several restaurants as a franchisee but in 2015 he would sell these restaurants too. Insiders and founders selling in the middle of an expansionary path can have many different reasons, so there is no point to speculate. What I will say however is that there is only one reason why founders and insiders keep their stake. All three men, Hahne, Rader and Findeis would later play a vital role in Vapiano’s fierce competitor, L’Osteria.
The same year a new investor with a 40% stake emerges: Mayfair. Mayfair is the family office of Günter Herz and his sister Daniela Herz-Schnoeckl, heirs to the German multi-billion-euro empire Tchibo. Mayfair’s investment is not a simple silent equity stake in the business but is meant to support the company’s ambitious international and general expansion plans. Mirko Silz, CEO since 2006, leaves the company. He was the one who managed the rapid development phase as a central figure, the multi-city expansion and densification, the internationalization, the brand management and the implementation of systems, all success to date were done under his leadership. The second phase of Vapiano’s growth story, from 2006 until now, 2011, is now ending and a new era, one more heavily influenced by large capital and Mayfair is beginning. There is no official record on this, but Mirko apparently was uncomfortable with the speed of expansion that the new owners were aiming for with an eventual IPO in a couple of years. Whatever the reason for his departure, Gregor Gerlach has now become CEO and is pushing global expansion even harder. Amusingly, Mirko would later join his old companions Hahne, Rader and Findeis, becoming an important character in Vapiano’s competitor, L’Osteria. The remaining 60% stake of Vapiano is now held by the Sander couple and Gregor Gerlach.
In terms of revenue, it’s another stellar year. For the very first time in the company’s short history, it hits the 100 million euros turnover mark, new owned and franchised restaurants are being opened while debt grows to almost 30 million euros. 33 own restaurants are now operational across Europe and there are over 100 Vapiano restaurants globally with 11 in the USA, four in South Korea, three in Saudi Arabia, two in Australia, one in Lebanon, Mexico, Taiwan and Turkey. It’s a tremendous effort by the company and the team to achieve this level of global of presences so rapidly. It’s far easier to comment in these situations from the sidelines but one does start to wonder whether an organization that size, structure, and experience can truly handle this kind of rapid expansion, even with the highest level of management talent. After all this isn’t a software company that can easily scale centrally, it’s an on-the ground, people, process, and operations heavy restaurant business.
Anyway, the loyalty program is a big success, and several tens of thousands of customers are enrolling into it. But on the financial side, cracks are starting to emerge. While gross margins are holding up steadily and nicely at 74% (75% in prior years) operating margins are slipping further, from 12% to 9%. The operating profit of the business is now 9 million euros, this is less than in the previous year even though revenue has gone up by almost 20 million euros. Management says this is due to expenses related to the changes in management and unscheduled depreciation charges on licenses and usage rights. Unfortunately, I can’t strip these costs out, as they are not broken out or explained in the annual report. Same store sales (or Like-for-Like, LfL) in Europe are increasing by 20% which is a great sign to see (although there is no split between fully ramped and newer sites), demand for the company’s product certainly seems to be there. Just to give you a bit of a flavour on how ambitious Mayfair was with Vapiano. The Mayfair family office itself is in Hamburg and at the time, in 2011, there are three Vapianos in Hamburg. Mayfair’s goal was to increase that number from the current three to a total of six to ten restaurants in Hamburg alone. So, between 2012 and 2014 the expansion train continues. Revenue in 2012 grows to 118 million euros, albeit at a slower pace, and the company’s debt load increases to over 43 million. Net debt is now three times the size of the company’s operating profits, which is manageable and but it’s certainly not prudent.
Operationally, the Company is busy with things beyond cooking good food and creating a good atmosphere for guests. Loyalty programs are being rolled out, the company becomes very active on social media, starts investing in online blogs, and launches a new website where Vapiano merchandise and gift cards can be bought.

https://preview.redd.it/z5cixr1uo0yc1.png?width=900&format=png&auto=webp&s=5a8fb1a9cb79aef56b0ec912b3dc1fc70d50966c
One year later growth slows further to 16%, revenue now reaching 136 million euros with gross margin holding up at roughly 75% but the operating profits slipping to its lowest point in years to only 7% of revenue or 9.6 million euros. The capital expenditures for tangibles like property, plant and equipment and intangibles like software and licenses, a.k.a. capex, is now so large, 20+ million euros, twice the size of the operating income of the business, that 14 million euros of new debt and 3 million euros in equity are raised. Total debt now stands at over 57 million euros with 4.5 million cash at hand. Net debt in relation to operating profits is now over five times. This is now a seriously leveraged business.
We are now in the year 2013 and 20 new sites are being opened. The total number of restaurants in the network grows to 139 with presence in 27 countries. Without a doubt this type of presence raises the awareness of the brand amongst consumers. Interestingly though, the company no longer speaks about same-store-sales growth in its annual report. That year, many events are hosted by the company, all aimed at bringing the customers closer to the Vapiano brand. To that end, headcount in HQ is starting to grow and the total number of employees grows by 512 to 2,928 in one year. An increase of 21% while revenue grows by 15%. As always with increasing size, the organization becomes less efficient and personal costs as percentage of revenue increase from 36% in the prior year to 38% now. A new and refreshed design concept is introduced by our old friend Matteo Thun and rolled out, starting in Berlin. By this time Vapiano is 11 years old and the glossy shine of the new, fresh, up-and coming Italian restaurant is starting to fade.
In all its previous years, the company was proud of the fact that it didn’t need any expansive and fancy marketing for its growth and was mostly driven by word of mouth, organically. This is now changing, and the group establishes its own marketing firm, Vapiano International Marketing GmbH. The new “Viva Oliva”, “Vapiano Ladies-Night” and “Vapiano-KIDs” events are all held in 2013 and a new marketing project is launched in 2014, a campaign with the name "HOME OF FRESHNESS". There is also a "HOME OF FRESHNESS" b2c film being developed, adaptable to different country preferences and the Vapiano “Photo Pool” is expanded for better image materials. A new Vapiano Design 2.0 concept is being introduced, a development of a standalone Vapiano restaurant in Fürth, Germany is introduced, and an improved bar concept. A lot of stuff is happening here.
In April 2014 CEO Gregor Gerlach tells the business paper WirtschaftsWoche that he wants to double the number of restaurants every three years. To that end the group is planning to build its own real estate, like McDonalds does at times. The Company calls these Freestander – a freely standing restaurant away from the city centre. The reason behind this is that when you go into smaller cities, it requires a different format where you can no longer look for empty space in central areas. This is a clear shift (or addition) from (or to) the previous model. With this strategy the group could target city peripheries and Autobahn stops, thereby capturing more customer traffic. This is starting to sound very different from the metropolitan client base that the group once was targeting. Some of that initial alure and magic is being lost by pursuing this strategy and the question arises if that is compromising the appeal of the other locations in the network by taking this step. But strong growth ambitions and lack of sufficient white space requires a change in strategy.
The new business projects don’t end there. The company introduces a drinks brand, Vapiano ICE TEA, with four flavour varieties, that are being rolled out in several European countries. A new app is introduced to replace the loyalty card and the company’s website is further developed. The loyalty program, VAPIANO PEOPLE is expanded into Sweden and the Netherlands gaining around 24,000 new members in 2014, a 15% increase from the previous year. The corporate design is further revised and so is the restaurant’s menu. Vapiano partners with star chef Cornelia Poletto to create new recipes but also encourages its own cooks and staff to suggest new recipes. It’s difficult to assess if this because dishes are getting stale or if it simply managements plan to extend the breadth of the menu with things like the specials. Other large Corporates, like McDonalds, run similar strategies where the classics are offered all year long while specials are introduced to the menu every so often to bring in some variety for those who are open to experiment and looking for new tastes and experiences without losing the popular dishes that have gained legitimacy and love by the customer over decades.
The Company is starting to introduce new events. For example, on October 22nd, Vapiano celebrates its birthday with a special event known as Vapiano Day. On that day, all employees in global support functions join the restaurant teams to actively participate in the daily operations. It’s aimed to enhance collaboration between the restaurant staff and administrative personnel, fostering improved teamwork. A concept that most firms should adopt in my view. Further, throughout the year, the company also runs various activities engaging both guests and Vapiano staff, an effort designed to strengthen the connections with regular guests. There is a lot going on here, it’s hard to keep track. There is a hard push and investments being made into the Vapiano brand and keeping the customer engaged. The average spent per customer in the group increases by 3% compared to the previous year and the number of total guests increases by 6% to over 14 million across all restaurants. It’s however not clear how much of that 6% is organic grow, i.e. more guests in the same restaurants, and how much comes from new restaurant openings. One can tell from the language in the annual report that the front end of the business is running faster than the back end. There is language around changing and harmonising IT structures without having to rely too heavily on restaurant staff on the ground. Simultaneously the company is trying to have a tighter central grip by building a team that standardizes functions, processes, and guidelines. All these initiatives, products and events are happening while sales outside of Europe are actually shrinking by 1.3% to which CEO Gregor Gerlach, attributes operational hick-ups and having partnered with the wrong local people. Are you spreading yourself too thinly? One word pops up for the first time in the 2014 annual report that I haven’t heard or read before in the context of Vapiano. That word is “lifestyle”. For the first time the company calls itself a lifestyle brand. I am not sure what direction this restaurant chain is taking here but it’s becoming increasingly clear that more elements are added around the core competency and concept of providing fresh, tasty food in a positive and welcoming atmosphere. I will say however, that as an outsider standing by the sidelines, it’s always much, much easy to make suggestions and comments than being in the arena yourself.
Anyways, during the year, as it has been the case in all previous years, new sites are being opened. The f final count by the end the year: 152 restaurants in 29 countries. Revenue grows to 152 million euros, but the rate of growth slows yet again to 12% from 16% in the previous year. The base effect is kicking in. Simultaneously personnel expenses grow 13%, further deteriorating margins. Gross margins are stable at 77%, an exceptionally good margin by the way, but operating margins further slips to 6%. The group’s operating profits with 9.5 million euros is now below the previous year, even though turnover grew by almost 15 million. You don’t need to be business genius to understand that there are too many corporate shenanigans happening here, with magazines, periphery products and events that blow up overheads and distracts from the core business that could be incredibly profitable. From 2011 to 2014 the company’s administrative costs increase by 120% to more than 20 million euros. The cost of employee training increases by 50%. There is a level of professionalism and back office investment necessary for the international expansion and that doesn’t come cheap. All the while, operationally, the US-business is struggling. Two US-locations are shutting down and a new management team is trying the turn things around. Vapiano’s proposition and core strength is freshness, atmosphere, and design, not something the average American quick service restaurant eater cares much for. The group’s operating cash flow is 19 million euros that year covering all capital expenditures for site openings, maintenance of the existing portfolio and the remodeling with the refreshed design. No debt or equity is raised, instead 2.1 million euros of debt is repaid.
Capitalism is working here at all times and in a capitalistic system, economic success attracts competition. Vapiano is increasingly fighting a wave of new chains popping up, all chasing the same mouths. Brands like Dean & David (salads), Hans im Glück (burgers), L’Osteria (pizza and pasta), BackWerk (bakery) and many others are all trying to grab a piece of the, albeit growing, pie – yes, pun intended. Even ex-Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking wants a piece of the action and starts his own pizza & pasta chain called Tialini and when launched in 2013 the concept was aiming for 20 sites in the medium term. There are five in place today. Finding a concept with broad market fit and then executing and scaling it in a competitive market is not easy. Vapiano had first mover advantages, executed growth well initially and through its achieved scale had a capital as an advantage.
But things are about to get spicy here at Vapiano, so stay tuned.

2024.05.02 15:28 ChrisWakanda I am starting to hate myself, what am I doing wrong? I feel like giving up.

Dear readers,
Hope you all are doing well.
I have been following this subreddit for a long time and I am going to be as candid as possible and literally lay me entire life in front of yall as I really need some advice on what the hell am I doing wrong and what do I need to do to improve. I apologize as this post is going to be slightly lengthy and kinda 'gregmat-heavy'? (love you gregmat) so please bear with me.
This post's flairs would be: Specific question and Advice so please skip this if you are not interested.
SOME CONTEXT:
I am a final year (senior) in CS (international). I want to pursue MSCS in the USA in Fall 2025.
I just took the official GRE test for the second time, about 5 hours back. My first time was in August 2023, in which I scored 314/340 (160Q, 154V). I took the august GRE attempt with quite a light hearted tone. As in, I only practised quant magoosh and practised as much verbal as I could (which was not alot at all), I did not really focus on weak topics, did not do gregmat, did not practice verbal or vocab at all, all my verbal practice was from taking custom tests on magoosh - would you call this practice? I do not know. I was horrible at verbal and was scoring in the low 150s in magoosh custom tests. I quant, i was just banking on whatever math knowledge I had and just practised sums that was it.
I was very sad with that score because MSCS is super competitive and I was aiming for atleast 320+ (with 165+Q - this was EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO ME) so I decided to take the test again but due to study pressure, finals, GPA, research and of course, laziness etc I had to postpone by around 7-8 months, to today.
I started my prep for the 2nd attempt in a very scattered manner. I bought gregmat+ (but not prepwsift) as my magoosh subscription had expired in december of 2023. I based my entire prep on gregmat as I found it super super helpful and easy to understand and the way he explained it all was fantastic. I watched all the verbal videos(TC, SE, RC) in the 1 month plan but did not focus much on quant - I did all this in and around december 2023. BUT I did not PRACTICE verbal much. I know the 1 month plan specified to practice from the big book but I did not do it diligently, I just watched the videos. I might have practiced about 30% of the big book. Almost no RCs)
Then I stopped my prep after a month or so due to college study, research etc etc.
I restarted my prep in the middle of April 2024, around 15-17 days back.
Since, I am from a STEM background, so I kinda knew most of the quant stuff except some topics that i was weak at (BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY GRE CAREER WAS TO THINK LIKE THIS, although I do know most of these concepts, the time constraint really is my kryptonite imo, but I need yall to confirm or deny it. I did not score what i needed so I am in no place to say what works)
I did as much vocab as possible - around 1-30 groups of the vocab mountain, thouroughly, something I had not done for my previous GRE attempt - This time, I also bought prepswift considering I did not have much time. I did NOT go through ALL the quant prepswift videos - only the topics I am weak at - I did NOT even go through 1 verbal prepswift video considering I had watched the entire 1 month plan for verbal.
During these 15-17 days, I practised quant by focusing on my weak topics such as std deviation, probability, PnC and stats, I also completed around 40-50% of the Manhattan 5lb book. I gave many gregmat mini exams but was scoring around 50-70% in all. I practiced the hard sums as well. I wrote all the important concepts in a small notebook for future revision. I always practiced with a timer as well.
For verbal, I once again did NOT practice the big book or any ETS material. I just did vocab and referred to the notes I made when I had gone through the 1 month plan. My only practice for verbal was while I was taking the gregmat mini tests and test series.
TEST SERIES:
Regarding test series, I purchased the Manhattan test series of 6 tests.
I received on average 158V, 162Q in all 6. I attribute this to an eggregious amount of silly mistakes in quant, panicking in quant, not being able to complete all questions in quant and finally, not understanding RCs well enough in the time constraint.
I finally gave Powerprep 2 yesterday, the day before my exam, and recieved 166Q, 157V. I was delighted. This was the goal and I hit it but I did think it was quite easier than Manhattan.
MY MINDSET:
I know it is very cringe to write this garrulous post, but please bear with me.
One thing about me is that I really panic alot during the exam day. Taking these tests at home in a familiar environement is super comfortable unlike on the test day. I DO NOT know how I can improve this. Also, another very important thing, I do HORRIBLY with time. The clock on the screen instills an unbelievable fear in me, and that makes me want to do things quickly and solve fast which leads to an excessive amounts of silly mistakes like calculation errors and most importantly, RE-READING the question again and again because it did not register the first time in my mind as my mind is wavered and distracted due to the time constraint.
TODAY:
So it has now been around 5 hours since my 2nd attempt GRE test.
I scored a meagre 315/340. (161Q, 154V) and I am absolutely devastated. I do not know how to improve now and hence I am writing this post on reddit to this wonderful community. I beseech you to give me some advice on what I can focus on now to improve my score. I might give it for the 3rd time in 2 months as 315 is most definitely NOT enough for me to get a seat in my program of choice, at my university of choice.
I attribute this score a bit to my mindset - I panic alot, the time factor really messes with my brain. I also tried meditating a bit but to no avail.
So guys, What is my problem? What was my mistake? What did I do wrong? How do I improve? I know my answer lies in this post and I also know the solution to some extent but I would love to know from the hive of the GRE community - especially from gregmat.
Please help a dude out.
Thank you and sorry for the never-ending post.

2024.05.02 15:20 smol_Caterpillar_21 Seeking advice on choosing between USA and Germany for masters in computer science and which country can be a better option for my situation.

my_qualifications: B.Tech in Computer Science from a reputed Private college with 9.25 CGPA.
I am a 2023 batch B.Tech CSE graduate currently working at a startup as a backend developer in India. I wanted to pursue higher studies but I am not able to decide between the two countries.
Let me talk about my situation.
Money: I come from a middle class family. So if I choose USA, I will have to take a huge loan for my education. On the other hand, in Germany I'll have to pay no tution fees for my education. But USA pays much more that Germany. The tax is comparatively higher in Germany but also includes health insurances etc which in the US, it doesn't. I also got to know that there are a lot of ways to save taxes in the US and you ultimately end up saving a lot of money in th US.
Work Life balance: I like to have a good work life balance. Germany is known for its work life balance. For the US, I have heard mixed reviews and I am not really sure at this point of time about work life balance in the US for IT jobs.
Identity: I belong to LGBT+ community and want a life that I can live happily. I don't want to be forced into a marriage and suffer and make others suffer. I am a quiet person and ask for a simple life of honesty for myself. I don't think it's too much to ask if my choices don't affect others. I don't think I have a place in India with the experiences I have had so far and I want a safe life for myself. As for the two countries, both of them seem to be accepting of it.
Distance: I would not want to move very far from my parents and would eventually want them to stay with me in the future. They know about my identity. Again I am not sure if they will move because they would not want to isolate themselves from their family. USA seems too far and Germany seems manageable and I feel I would be able to plan India more often if I stay in Germany.
Parents: I wanted to bring my parents to stay with me after a few years but it's seems pretty difficult to do that in both the countries. And because of this, I am not able to decide if I will be able to stay long term. This will also depend on other factors like if my future partner comes from the other country, nobody would want to leave a 1st world country to stay at a 3rd world country.
Safety: With the recent shooting cases, I am not sure if USA is the correct option when it comes to safety. Germany seems much more safer than USA.
I am seeking advice here so that I can take an informed decision and not rush into my decision.
If I don't plan my studies within the next 6 months, it might become too late for me.
Thanks in advance for advice.

2024.05.02 14:28 shmupsy Does Corporate BS Ever Work?

(USA)
I've worked at 3 midsize manufacturing companies over 20 years and they always do this thing.
They are constantly stressed about quality issues. They think that if they just find the right recipe, this plague will be solved and they can get that extra profit they keep losing back and secure the company's future. Bro, you are a midsize company that never took off. That means as soon as the economy slumps, your ass is on the chopping block. IDK, maybe your strategy should revolve around that instead of dreaming you are the next Bill Gates wanna be. Do pump n dump like everyone else.
They turn to all the books and lectures they know; every motivational speaker they've absorbed that made them feel like they had an edge in the business world. They pay to train everyone in lean six sigma male taekwondo yellow belt brazillian wax joo jitsu master blaster practice with a panera catered lunch. Years go by and nothing changes.
Then they turn to small group brainstorm sessions. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix these quality issues, we want to hear them! Our ears are open! We will become overwhelmed by your complaints and opt to trust our own instincts rather than you non-shareholders after all. The next brainstorm session will be us telling you how it is.
Anyway, what I wish I could always say to these people is this:
The reason quality is suffering is because of a multifaceted depression of your employees, and it's mostly out of your control.
Before they even show up to work, they have to live in America: a soul-sucking soft-dystopia where we are over-saturated with escapism and severely spiritually dehydrated. The mention of virtue in this place triggers Idiocracyesque screeching.
More and more, coming to work is a pain in the ass to your best quality employee. It's not paying enough to support they lifestyle they want. Quiet-quitting has been a subconscious thing long before the internet gave it a name.
There was an employee of old who would come in and do their best to check their work and double-check others. They were lucid and alert. It was maintained by everybody being that way, and bad-eggs were easy to purge. But now the hiring pool is all bad eggs, because we are all bad eggs. We are not lucid. We walk around in a stupor waiting to get back to whatever we are dosing with.
Best you can do is suck it up and embrace the precarity. Your company is on life-support. Accept you will never get these people to go the extra mile. And also internalize the fact that you wasted a ton of cash and time on Corporate BS snake-oil. Stop living in a fantasy world. You make us all sick, but you are happy having just enough to have more than us.
But I can't say that to my boss, because they would interpret that as a can't-do attitude.

2024.05.02 14:09 M_with_Z 33 RuneScape 3 Videos to Watch from the Month of April

33 RS3 Videos to Watch from the Month of April

Hello folks, I think some of the reddit folks remember my post from last month which was a list of all the currently active RS3 YouTube Content Creators (which has already changed since some people have become active again), if you haven't here is the link. I had previously posted a similar spotlight post of some of the best RS3 videos for the Month of March and wanted to keep it to a monthly theme and have created this April centered post.
These are my opinions but I will provide the title of the video, the name of the creator, a summary of the video and the link of said video.
These videos will be listed based on the alphabetical order of the titles and is not a ranking guide since some of these videos are basically raw and unpolished. Please note a majority of these creators do not make RS3 Content as a profession and they post these videos as a passion project for the game we all enjoy and play, RuneScape 3. If you enjoy any of these videos, please like, comment and subscribe to whichever Creators you enjoyed.

100 Magister Takedowns: Is He Worth It? Runescape

Charliz4rd92
Well Protoxx, I think we finally have someone whose voice is a bit more soothing or satisfying to listen to. In this very simple video, Charliz4rd92 in his amazing voice narrates his experience with the Magister in the current bossing meta of the game. Honestly the content was normal bossing but man is his voice satisfying to listen to and the video edits and introduction makes him a Content Creator to keep an eye on.

2:14 ab2 – the fastest floor ever done in W77

L2ggs
For a majority of people this title is an acronym that most people don’t understand and if you do, you’re a RuneScape 3 player that most likely played a decade ago. This is a Dungeoneering Speedrun record video where the 5 man finished an Abandoned 2 Floor in 2 minutes and 14 seconds. This video was posted by L2ggs who is one of the best DG’ers in the current era of the game where he and a multitude of other Dungeoneering Speedrunners are trying to break records that are still considered impossible to beat from several years ago. If you are interested in gaining an insane amount of Dungeoneering experience, a unique highscores or an insane amount of Dungeoneering Tokens in a short amount of time, this is a community you want to learn about.

30.000% Zamorak, HALFWAY TO 60K!!! [TRIO]

Sejearian
Last month we had quite a few Bossing feats happen for the first time. Even though I am only posting one of 30,000% Zamorak Enrage feats, there were multiple that happened last month, and I recommend checking out all of them by looking them up on YouTube. So, for those who don’t know supposedly 60,000% Zamorak is the maximum enrage you can get to when fighting the Zamorak boss and no one has even gotten close to reaching this yet. Sejearian a top tier PvM’er showcases this 3 man Zamorak fight where any wrong or incorrectly mechanic response would have ended their run to get to the halfway point of this boss nearly two years later after its release.

AFK Nightmare Creatures Necromancy Guide

Silenced
I honestly forgot that Nightmare Creatures existed since they have faded to obscurity over the last several years. In this video Silenced showcases that Nightmares are very easily Afk’able with Necromancy and how to achieve this feat. Not to mention it is a great money maker and experience gaining method. It is a very high tier expensive loadout needed to be able to utilize this method but definitely a viable method for Necromancy Experience to finish that last portion of the 200m grind.

Araxxor Guide (Necromancy) for the casual player

Dropping Bear
This is Dropping Bear’s first boss guide and I think he did a pretty good job. In this slow but very methodical guide, he showcases how to beat Araxxor with necromancy and how to deal with every mechanic during every phase. He includes graphics, visual indications and a lot of great tips and tricks on how to deal with the Boss as a player attempting their first go for this boss. If you’re a person whose scared of bossing, this is an excellent mid-tier to beginning stage boss to learn with very good reward output.

Blooming Burrow [FashionScape Showcase #3]

Crystal
Spotlighted by Jagex on the RuneScape Weekly Update in the first week of April, this video deserves to be on this list also due to how well Crystal explains the new Easter FashionScape items. With her video she goes into visual detail (with outfit combinations) about all the new cosmetic items and titles and how to unlock them. Unfortunately, the Easter Event has ended upon creating this post but this would be an excellent video to watch and see how the new cosmetics would look in game if you ever plan to get them in a future event.

Eating this Obscure Food INCREASES DPS!!!

Cyruss
Mostly working on his Golden Reaper series, Cyruss showcases a unique new food tech method that can increase your damage output if you are attempting to break some PvM records. I personally have never heard of it myself but it’s a unique method that synergizes well with a few other game mechanics. I recommend this for any casual or new PvM’er to utilize this method in your new attempts at doing a boss for the first time or for a End game PvM’er who is trying to make it on the PvM Speedrun TwitteX shoutouts.

Fashionscape: Forest Archer Outfits – Runescape (Female Outfits)

Wings of Absurdity
Wings has been just pouring out unique new content, but my personal favorite is the Fashionscape Outfit showcases. Similar to the last month, Wings has edited it really well where they match the scenery, sound effects and lighting to go with the outfit theme. I am a sucker for Range outfits and I really like the Maplewood Archer and Deepwood Beastmaster sets they showcase.

Hidden in Runescape’s New Quest are insane Lore Revelations! Requiem for A Dragon!

Prideslayer RS
With the release of RuneScape’s newest quest, Requiem for A Dragon. Mr Prideslayer has once again released another amazing theory crafted video about the Lore of the Quest. Even if you are not a lorehound, I think you can appreciate all the crazy research this man has done. In fact, most Jmods are scared of even posting lore content since this man is like Charlie from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia who is going to dissect everything that gets posted. It’s a fun watch and you will laugh or at minimum smirk.

How To PROPERLY Kill Rasial! – Beginner Tips

Init Yeah
Even though I might be compiling this video list, I am not the greatest PvM’er and guides like this one by Init Yeah are awesome. In the video, he does a great breakdown of some of the most common issues he sees since he often hosts Bossing masses and is constantly getting other player feedback from their Bossing attempts. Usually Init Yeah isn’t my style of videos however this video is a quality watch especially if you’re still new to Bossing still.

INSANE LORE – Can Mod Stu Save RUNESCAPE? Beloved developer talks Lore, New Player experience!

Prideslayer RS
Probably the best video of the month. This excellent video or interview with Mod Stu is a must watch for the month. In this deep dive of an interview, Prideslayer goes into the deep end of RuneScape 3 lore. With questions pertaining to Ashdale future rework to become a Minigame hub to extreme Xau Tuk lore, many lore questions are answered and unanswered in this great interview. If you’re a lorehound or want to see how passionate people are about the lore than you need to watch this video.

Is the new Necromancy ritual good? I did the math.

Qp RS
A short video by Qp that goes over the new Ectoplasm Ritual which is a massive update for Ironmans. In this video despite him missing the new Necklace of Alteration (20% Output Increase) which he addresses in the comments, he explains what the expected output for Ectoplasm would be achievable for both Ironman and Main Accounts. For main accounts, I would still recommend checking this video out since this is a great new money maker if you still need to train Necromancy to 120.

KBD on F2P with no Food

Void Delphox
Void is normally a speedrunner or building unique 1 defence accounts but in this video, they showcase their skill in beating the King Black Dragon in Free to Play without any food. This video came about when someone made a comment in their previous April Fools video claiming that KBD was harder than 4K enrage of Zamorak on a 42 defence account that he attempted to do.

A C P L
A new format that A C P L, one of RS3’s prolific lorehound’s utilizes is this question and analysis format where he gets RS3 Content Creators to give their thoughts on the new Necromancy Visual Designs. The perspectives are fresh with a variety of viewpoints that analyze the color schemes and what they represent to the highest tier of necromancy gear not being able to be dyed for the initial few months upon release and various other necromancy design elements.

NEW RUNESCAPE SKILL – Ultimate Benchsitting 1-99 Guide

AshShley
In this pun-tastic video AshShley goes over the iconic April Fools event of this year or in my opinion the best April Fools event we’ve ever had in RuneScape 3. If you missed it, that’s really unfortunate however this video is a great watch of what you missed in regard to the best new skill that was added to the game for a singular week. AshShley is generally known for her Totally Relatable Guides which is intended for the casual player so check out her channel for more silly puns and guides similar to this one.

NEW SKILLCAPE – RuneScape

PolarizedMoon
In the previous video located above, I recommend AshShley’s guide but this video of PolarizedMoon where he naturally discovers the new skill is a joy to watch. PolarizedMoon normally plays RuneScape in a more casual style due to the variety of games he plays and posts on his channel. However, if you want to watch a lighthearted creator who isn’t all about efficiency and is just playing for fun, he is an excellent creator in this regards.

Rat Tales Episode 2 – Jmod Azanna

Rat Cypher
A newer RuneScape 3 player, Rat Cypher has been consistently getting some amazing guests for his new podcast and this time he is joined by Jagex Moderator Azanna. Jmod Azanna is one of the backend Jagex Community Managers who deals with a lot of the Subcommunities of RuneScape 3. In this lengthy interview, Rat has taken multiple questions from the community that have been asked to Jmod Azanna despite Rat and Azanna going off random tangents for a good portion of the interview. Nonetheless, Jmod Azanna gives some very juicy answers and even some insights about the different RuneScape communities he interacts with daily.

RS3 Journey of Taskman Micks #71 (#runescape 3 Taskman Mode)

MickeyThaGamer
In my last month compilation, I provided an introductory video that explained the rules of Taskman and now wanted to spotlight one of the premier Taskman players in MickeyThaGamer. Aiming for Rank 1 in Taskman mode, Mickey is on Episode 71 of the series where he’s reaching ever closer to top 50 Taskman ranks. He’s currently completed all the Beginner and Easy Tasks and now is chugging through the Medium tier hoping he doesn’t roll one of the extremely long grinds in this progression video.

RuneScape’s BEST Skilling Aura: Jack Of Trades

IronArraxor
This really well edited video by IronArraxor is a return to form video which is him coming back to video posting due to a very busy initial few months of 2024. The video goes over the once highly controversial Jack of Trades Aura that a good percentage of the Ironman community heavily disliked. Despite this viewpoint, it has become an iconic daily that Mains and Ironmans utilize frequently and IronArraxor goes into full detail of what cost/input/reward of this amazing item. If you ever have long term plans for maxing in general, I would highly recommend checking this amazing guide video out.

If you haven’t been following along Topher’s videos of his exploration of RuneScape 3 coming from OSRS then you have been missing out. In another great video comparing his experiences between both games where he has been exploring the modern version of the game without guides, he provides excellent commentary of both the great stuff and the flaws in the current game on a new account. In this particular video he goes through numerous quests with the highlight being the iconic Broken Homes quest in RuneScape 3.

RuneScape in a nutshell

Rong Rong
Not a RuneScape 3 Content Creator however Rong Rong clearly plays the game and created this great animation about most of the iconic skills we have in RuneScape 3. This is an excellent video for sharing if you want to recommend RuneScape and then tell the person you’ll understand all the references after you play a bit.

Runescape’s Newest Quest Reward Packs A Punch! Soul Ring Review

The RS Guy
A much simpler video compared to the massive video he released last month; The RS Guy reviews the new Necromancy ring and where it fits in the current meta of the game. The video also does a great explanation of what abilities it synergizes with and where you should utilize the ring to its full potential. Short and simple video but the synergizing component of the video is something that I think people need to watch since that mechanic is massive for Slayer grind in my personal opinion.

SalamnderScape Rule the World

Elej
Elej is one of the leaders of the ScreenieScape community who has also previously been nominated multiple times for the Golden Gnome Awards. In this short video, she and the ScreenieScape community have taken over RuneScape as Salamanders! If you are interested in these fun activities, they are advertised on Discord and Twitter with large turnouts and often get noticed in the Weekly posts on the RuneScape website.

Should YOU get BiS Melee? Runescape 3

FroggieGames
A follow-up from last month’s video is this great analysis of Melee by Froggie Games. In this video he does a great job of breaking up the core aspects of Melee and where it fits in the current meta of the Game. I think if you plan to return to this iconic combat style or had fond memories of the style you should watch this video.

Slayer time… and we got lucky!! – Runescape Progress (#33)

Crunchie
I might have repeated this from last month too but for Slice of Life casual RuneScape 3 progression videos, Crunchie is at the best in this category for the content. She edits them really well, throws in a bunch of nice scenic shots of her real life and isn’t playing efficiencyscape. I recommend checking her content out simply to see the style of videos since they are a lot more unique than most other progression style videos.

Telos Into [Animation]

PupRS
Experimenting in a different domain, this animation which was utilized in one of TheRSGuy’s videos is Pups first animation to date. Posted on Twitter or X initially, this hyped me up for the Telos Bossing video days before it was actually released by TheRSGuy. Normally Pup is a PvM and Clue Maestro but him exploring some new content for RuneScape 3 is awesome to see and I personally can’t wait to see his next animation.

The “best” way to play RuneScape 3

Pixel Hippie
Most people who play Old School RuneScape know of the iconic UltraHardcore Ironman Mode or simply referred to UIM. In RuneScape 3 we do not have this game mode however the concept has been attempted by a few content creators which I have listed in my Content Creator List. Well let’s turn it up a notch and do it on a Controller is what Pixel has decided in his latest series. Watch his latest journey where he is restricted to his 28 inventory spaces and no bank access while he plays Controller the whole time.

The FINAL upgrade for Best In Slot RANGED gear! Runescape Journey EP22

ChrisMelloRS
I will say out of this whole list, Chris has the best intros to his video uncontested. Every episode for this return to RuneScape series starts with a great short skit that really just makes the video enjoyable from the start of the episode. The content of the video showcases his experience with the progression of the game as a ironman and at the given moment his exploration into bossing with the Ranged style with the massive buffs the style had of late.

This will be HUGE for prayer RS3 Hardcore Ep.16

IronCoachH
Someone mentioned in my last March post for this topic, to add folks with personality and IronCoachH exemplifies personality. This video showcases his progress for reaching the front page of the Hardcore Ironman HiScores and he narrates his progress over the course of the video. Unfortunately, he is months behind compared to his Twitch progress but even with his highly shortened videos you can see that exuberant personality he showcases on his Livestreams. He’s a solid fun watch especially if you ever have plans for how to progress a Hardcore Ironman.

Tick Perfect – Beastmaster Durzag (Unbeatable)

I Dps
There are multiple versions of this same kill since this was done in a team which included Papa Dor, Unge Spiller, I Dps (video creator), GodHeOwnzzz, DePose, I Call Dibs, The Dig Site, Saltea, kyroh and Praesul. This video is a bit more detailed and well edited compared to the other viewpoints where the creator showcases the ability rotations, all the involved PvM’ers and how they actually achieved the feat in the video. If you are confused for what exactly they accomplished in the video, the basic explanation is that they mechanically beat the boss in the fastest game time possible due to the new Melee changes as a result of the latest Combat Changes. If you are wanting to see different viewpoints, nearly all of these folks have posted videos on their own channel.

Vorkath’s Fall – RuneScape 3 Music

Yann
I am unfortunately one of those people who grew up playing the game in silence because I would be sneaking onto the computer to be playing RuneScape. However, I regret it heavily because I never really valued the amazing Original Sound Tracks that Jagex has created for RuneScape until I got much older. Yann who compiles all the original sound tracks that Jagex produces posts it on his channel for anyone wanting to relisten to them independently. This particular video is the soundtrack of the most iconic part of the new Requiem For A Dragon quest and is a must listen for anyone who hasn’t listened to it yet. On their channel you can find 3 other tracks from the quest that are also worth a listen.

What to do after getting Membership

Protoxx
A voice that most people are familiar with, Protoxx made this great video for how to utilize your membership if you have bought Membership recently. Its an excellent watch or share if you have any new friends or have started up again in a long time. One of the things that he mentions as his first big topic which I am going to repeat too, is that make sure you make a plan. The game has a lot of content and it can overwhelm you so making small goals, long goals or any particularly

Older Videos and Special Shoutout Videos

So, I lied that I won’t be posting videos before March, I keep finding older videos that are a gem and should be watched due to the amazing content that the Content Creator has produced. If I find anything in the previous months I will post it below.

5 Biggest Nerfs in RuneScape History

LOLjerel
Hola Muchacho is how we get introduced to Mr Jerel. With great editing and funny commentary, Jerel goes into an excellent overview of some of the biggest PvM nerfs in RuneScape 3’s history. It’s a very fun short video that you can easily share the video in all the RuneScape chats to get a conversation going.

The Dragon Mattock grind begins… Legalocked #12 – Legacy Locked Ironman RS3

Rheyo RS
I do not know how I missed Rheyo’s iconic Legacy Locked account video from last month, but it deserves to be on the list. This series focuses on utilizing the classical combat style that most people know vividly of due to Old School RuneScape or anyone who played Pre-2012. In this well edited series, the man explores some of the hardest bossing challenges which utilizes Legacy Necromancy and the other legacy styles as an Ironman. In this particular video he’s started his long grind at Big Game Hunter without the Surge or Dive abilities which is honestly fun and impressive to watch. He’s hinted in his latest social media posts that he did something crazy in the month of April for the account but he hasn’t posted the video yet, but if you know what he has hinted the next video should be amazing.

The Pain is Almost OVER Extreme Chunk Locked Ironman Episode 17

Chunk Yony
This iconic series known as Extreme Chunk Locked Ironman in Old School RuneScape by Limpwurt has been attempted in RuneScape 3. Follow the journey of Chunk Yony who as a student is still producing this unique series in his free time in his attempt to conquer all the Chunks in RuneScape 3. What is a Chunk? Well RuneScape was designed in memory fragments which consisted of a size of 150 game tiles by 150 game tiles which is a total of 22,500 game tiles. This account restricts itself based on these chunks that the game was designed around in that you can only progress after completing all the things available in that chunk that are possible. I know he has a newer episode released but this older video better represents the content he has been producing.

RuneScape 3, But My Combat Only is Being Followed #5

Lyfe
More notable for his Old School RuneScape series, Lyfe has still created one of the best unique account builds in RuneScape 3 with this Combat Only Ironman. In this particular video, you see some of the theorycrafting him and his buddies do to unlock very niche but big upgrades for the account. He has access to the shops for this Combat Only Ironman which is a bit different than the other RS3 Combat Only Ironman and he showcases how he utilizes the Shops to his advantage. I personally think he does an excellent job on editing, showcasing his progress compared to the last video and future goals really well and I think if you plan to watch this, you should actually start from the start of the series to understand how he built this fun account.
