Italy Map of Attacks and meta list
Throughout 2023 and into 2024, we have seen an increase in the amount of attacks we are logging in Italy. This is notably due to the efforts of u/pacogatto and careful logging by u/bpbattacks9 but Italy is undoubtedly facing a crisis of severe and fatal attacks by pit bulls.
Below is a meta list of all attacks as well as a link to an interactive map that lists out attack type, link, location, and date.

I made a map with all the places where it was believed that there were entrances to Hades.
Sorry for the quality. The places are: 1. The Acheron River (used by Odysseus) 2. Nysian Plain, Boeotia. 3. Isthmus of Corinth. 4. Megara. 5. Ploutonion at Elefsina or Eleusis. 6. Crommyon. 7. Corydallus. 8. Lerna Lake. 9. Epidaurus. 10. Cave at Cape Taenarum (used by Orpheus) 11. Ploutonion at Acharaca. 12. Crete. 13. Pluto's Gate, Ploutonion at Hierapolis. 14. Cave at Lake Avernus (used by Heracles) 15. Enna.
The other 4 rivers of Hades, the Cocytus, Lethe, Phlegethon and Styx were also entrances to the underworld, but as far as I know they have no real location.
Maybe I have missed an entrance to the underworld that I haven't found. If you know if there is any more tell me please, I would like this map to be as complete as possible.

2024.03.31 22:54 Alternative-Eagle781 Puglia advice

I will be flying into Bari for a week in late May with my family (son 10). I am looking for advice about where to stay. We are thinking of renting a car but not sure. If we do, we could stay anywhere within 1-2 hours drive. (in Puglia or also maybe Basilicata) We like to stay in normal, not especially touristy (but maybe it doesn't matter so much in may?) places and we like eating and interacting with the locals. We don't like luxury at all. We really enjoyed that on a recent trip to Napoli, where we basically came back to our home base outside of the tourist center every evening for dinner. We will want to see some sights, museums, etc. but also just walk around, eat at local places and finally go to the beach (my son doesn't mind the cooler water). Of course in Italy a lot of 'ordinary' little towns are like museums compared to the rest of the world. We are not the type of people who need to do all the "must sees" in the region. We will find a few cultural attractions wherever we are. Probably will spend a day or two exploring Gallipoli, Bari, Lecce, or some other town(s).
As for beaches, I guess they won't be too crowded at this time of year, but we prefer those that are less 'developed' -- a some umbrellas are fine but not like one Lido after the other. I noticed that a lot of the Spiaggi are hard to get into the water. We are not too picky, just want to keep things easy. I was thinking of maybe staying 3 days in one place and 4 in the other. Maybe one of them could be a farmhouse with some cats and dogs (which my son loves) Don't mind staying inland a bit if there's a nice town or village. So, to sum up:
- What areas do you think would be best for our needs (easy, informal, good simple food, easy access to a beach)?
- Any beaches in particular that you recommend? Which coast is better in general?
- Are there particular hotels or farmhouses / agriturismo that you would recommend?
Many thanks in advance

2024.03.26 07:01 Pacogatto 5-Year-Old Girl Bitten by Her Pitbull While She Was Sleeping at Home. She Underwent Head Surgery, is in Serious Condition - Gallipoli, Italy - 25th March, 2024

Bitten on the head by a pitbull, 5-year-old girl ends up in hospital. Her condition is serious although her life is not in danger. It happened on the afternoon of Monday 25 March in Cutrofiano, a town in the Gallipoli district. The little girl was first transported to the Panico hospital in Tricase and, immediately afterwards, to the Vito Fazzi hospital in Lecce due to the severity of her injuries.
The little girl was at home. She was asleep when a family member, completely accidentally, opened the door, thus allowing the dog to approach. The animal pounced on the little girl, biting her in the head and calf. A movement as sudden as it is violent. The little girl started screaming and called her parents who promptly called for help. Only at that point did the dog loosen its grip.
The little girl was accompanied to the nearby Tricase hospital and taken over by doctors. She immediately underwent delicate head surgery to suture the wounds not only on the head but also on the face, at eye level and on the lower limbs. Once the clinical picture was regularized and her life was now out of danger, she was intubated and transferred to the resuscitation department of the Dea-Fazzi, a department equipped with two pediatric intensive care places.
In the small town of Salento there are hours of great apprehension. Mayor Luigi Melissano was informed and the faithful, at the afternoon mass, prayed for the recovery of the little girl. The police arrived at the house together with the ASL vets who carried out the first checks. An information note will be sent to the Prosecutor's Office in the next few hours.

Balkan Roadtrip
Greetings travel.
Me and a couple of friends are planning to go on a roadtrip through the Balkans, starting from Thessaloniki in Greece. And I would like to ask some questions to the community as it's our first roadtrip ever and want to know some general stuff about Western Balkans:
  1. So our main plan is to start from Greece, then stay 1 night in Skopje. From Skopje we will leave for Sarajevo, passing through Kosovo and Montenegro. After that we want to spend 1 night at each of Mostar, Dubrovnik and Tirana. What do you think of the route in general? Would transitioning from Serbia be a better solution? Or any other advices are welcome.
  2. What should we do with the currencies? We know that Kosovo and Montenegro use Euro, but how is the attitude towards Euro in the other countries? Do they accept it as well? Or are the exchange bureaus easily findable?
  3. Are the borders like we see them in social media? Would being EU citizens benefit us in any ways? (shorter queues, direct passes etc)
  4. We came across an aggreement that said that if you buy a SIM card from any of the non-EU balkan countries, you can also use the data and the minutes on the others countries as well. Is that right? And if yes, we saw some mobile applications claiming to sell e-SIMs from various countries. Any of you have any experience with that?
  5. If you have any musts that we should do, see, visit or eat, please let us know in the comments.

2024.03.24 13:50 marzipanduchess Critique my Puglia itinerary! august 2024

Hello everyone,
So my bf and I are planning a few days down in Puglia late august (yes, we know it's hot. we're fine, we usually go to southern spain during the same time and we adjust/don't mind too much)We want to minimize changing hotel for our stay and hopefully we can avoid renting a car. We love walking around cute old towns, eating a lot (outside touristic zone), beach.. pretty basic!i know some people we saythat we shouldn't use Bari as our first homebase but it actually seem like the kind of place we love: a city where real life happen.
Day 1: arriving in Bari
Day 2: Bari
Day 3: day trip to Monopoli (train)
Day 4: day trip to Matera (seems like a very long day...maybe worth renting a car to save on train time? or just leaving it for next time with the weather?)
Day 5: day trip Polignano a Mare (train)
Day 6: move to Lecce (train)
Day 7: day in Lecce
Day 8: day trip to Otranto
Day 9: day trip to Gallipoli
Day 10: return to bari, fly to Venice (we would be fly back home the next day)
We are also open to rent a car one day in Lecce (to explore the countryside around, maybe visit a vineyard or an olive oil mill? also open to an organized tour depending of the price and if it's worth it) but i can't seem to find a car rental company in Lecce, they seem to be in Brindisi at the airport and we don't want to rent for 4 days... any idea? is it just google that doesn't give me the right info?
Does that sounds good? it's a bit more rush than our regular travel (where we usually spend around 1week/place) so we are open to suggestions, changes we could make, must see, etc.
Grazie!!

2024.03.17 17:31 someolive2 A month in Puglia

Hey! This is a transportation and itinerary related post.
My fiancé and I visited puglia last year in late Septembe early October for 9 days and we can truly say it was our favorite vacation spot of our lives. More specifically we stayed in Polignano A Mare. We did not have a car rental because we had transportation to and from the airport from our lodging accommodations.
We planned to use the train to see other towns- but we didnt leave Polignano (I know- we are crazy but we adored our time).
Luckily, we are heading back to Italy this September!
We decided to elope in Puglia. We rented a villa in Ostuni for the week of our ceremony. (Car will pick us up from either Bari or Brindisi airport)
Then, we plan to return to Polignano for two weeks but this time we will be visiting Bari, Monopoli, Alberobello, and maybe Locorotondo, Matera etc. by trains and public transport. (Private car will take us from Ostuni to Polignano).
When talking to one of our wedding vendors recently, she mentioned that we should certainly rent a car instead of doing this by train. We wont rent a car for the wedding week because we are walking distance to town and will be in a whirlwind, would hate for it to go unused that week. However, for the two weeks in Polignano I am now considering renting a car for at least one of the two weeks. There are other places in puglia worth visiting that would be so much easier and faster by car and wouldnt really make sense for a a day trip by train. Example: Lecce, Taranto, Salento, Gallipoli.
Any advice on if a car is best for the two weeks of the honey moon in puglia or even doing day trips to Monopoli and Bari by train for a the first week (we also want to revisit our favorite polignano spots) and getting a rental car for the last week to explore a little farther away.
I am also seeking advice about airports. Last September we flew straight to Bari airport and out of there as well.
I was considering flying home out of a completely different city like Rome. My thinking is the airfare would be cheaper, we can cut a few days off the Polignano stay and visit a new place. In this case, Im not sure if we would need a car at all or if we would be fine seeing more of puglia by train, taking a train to rome for the last few days and leaving from there.
The only hesitation I have is stress of traveling so much by train and we will have much more luggage than last trip because of our elopement.
Any advice or suggestions are welcome thank you
peace

Round 1: Pretty easy Tuscany (south or west of Florence) round.
Round 2: Bus with name of city, can't get it any easier.
Round 3: Pretty flat, so Po valley (region south of alpes and north of appenines), not much thought put in the actual guess, so pretty lucky with the 4k.
Round 4: Plate with the house number (16) says Bologna.
Round 5: Phone number started with 04, combined with the flat landscape meant it had to be either Veneto of FVG. If I had just studied the phone numbers better, I would've known where 045 was, but still great guess.
(Played on 50 sec NM, total time 1min6sec, score 21132)

2024.02.13 09:59 Electricboogaloo9 Advice for planning a huge trip

Currently planning the longest/largest trip I've ever been on - 6 weeks in Italy/Switzerland/Germany!
I had some questions about luggage, and then if there's any tips for any of the places we're heading it would be SO appreciated. I want to hear everyone's favorite things to do (and also people's least favorite things)!
Itinerary so far is this: (It'll be just me and my partner unless we meet up with family)
Arriving in Rome early May - staying in little hotel just to sleep because we arrive late.
Puglia for 8 days - staying in Monopoli for 4 nights, Lecce for 1, Otranto for 2. We'll have a rental car for these days. Arriving in Bari from Rome. We're wanting to do little day trips from each of those places, then head back to Bari to take the train back to Rome.
Rome for 3 days - staying in Trastevere.
Amalfi for 3 days- staying in Nerano. Training/bussing down from Rome. Meeting up with some family here.
Tuscany for 4 days - staying with family near Siena.
Como for 3 days - staying with family near Laglio.
Switzerland for 6 days - hiking in Interlaken and Zermatt. Will have a rental car here.
Dolomites for 5 days - more hiking! Will have a rental car here too.
Venice for 2 days - hoping to visit Murano and Burano while we're here.
Germany for the remainder of the trip.
We're mostly getting around with trains that I've planned out, except for in Puglia/Tuscany/Como/Switzerland/Dolomites.
Obviously this is quite a large trip, and also has multiple purposes - we'll have to bring clothes for weddings, beach days, city days, country side days, colder weather clothes for the Alps along with hiking shoes etc. because we'll be doing a few weeks of pretty solid daily hiking. With this in mind, I'm worried about how to pack 'light' for something this large.
Everybody says not to bring big suitcases. I don't know how to avoid at least 1 big suitcase + 1 big duffel for 2 people for a 6 week trip, especially with what we're all doing. Do you think this would be fine?
Also - should we really never leave bags in the car? While we're in Puglia when we're switching between locations we'll want to explore places like Ostuni, Trani, and Gallipoli. Can we leave bags in the car for a few hours here or is it really unadvisable?
Is there any advise on things we should definitely book in advance for any of these places (obviously stuff like the Colosseum, but maybe other stuff you wouldn't normally think of). Do you need dinner bookings on Friday/Saturday nights?
I really appreciate any comments with advice and recommendations! Thanks in advance :)

Context: Going from Rome to Bari/Materano (can deviate) and on the way there we would like to do a multi day hike.
