I've been thinking a lot lately about what it means to be in our 40s or approaching 40 as single and childless in Singapore. It's a topic that doesn't seem to come up often enough, so I wanted to hear from you all.
For those of us in this age group, how do you feel about not being married and childless? In Singapore, there's this strong expectation to settle down and start a family by a certain age. But life isn't always so straightforward I guess, too many curveballs.
I always thought I'd have a future with someone special by now. But things didn't turn out as planned. Had my share of relationships, and honestly, most of them didn't end well. I think I have a very people-pleasing trait that attracts a lot of energy vampires and narcissists and I tend to ignore red flags. However, I've learned a lot from those experiences and can see things more clearly now. Now, I'm feeling pretty jaded about the whole dating thing imho
On top of that, I'm of Indian and Eurasian ancestry, and our communities here are quite small. This makes the peer pressure even more intense. It feels like everyone knows everyone else's business, and there's this unspoken expectation to hit certain life milestones. While I'm not really feeling FOMO, it's tough being surrounded by people who think that getting married and having kids is the epitome of success.
I've noticed that some of my friends who are single and childless seem to be leading very mundane, Groundhog Day sort of lives. It feels like they're just going through the motions, perhaps to avoid thinking about what they might be missing.
Another thing that scares me is the number of divorces happening around people in this age group. And this is very hard to say, but while I was dating in the last few years, I came across so many married men on these sites in their 30s and 40s. Even friends who are married with kids behave like they're single. It makes me feel like they aren't fulfilled in their marriages and are looking for something else or just variety. I don't know, but it scares me a lot.

My (ex)fiancé and I had been together for almost 6.5 years, engaged for almost 2.5. Over the last several months, my (ex)fiancé has sat me down to talk about our relationship about once a month. Before these conversations, he would shut down and barely speak to me for several days even when I would ask what was wrong. Then he would finally tell me he was ready to have a conversation and would express his frustrations with the relationship. By the time of our conversations, I would already be on the defensive from his recent behavior. I also generally do not receive feedback well. When he would try to tell me that he was unhappy in our relationship because I didn't compliment him enough, flirt with him enough, or tell him I loved him enough, I would shut down. I was not able to hear what he was really trying to tell me. Instead, I put up a wall and told him to love me for who I am. I basically asked him "If I'm happy in our relationship despite my frustrations, why can't you be?" I now realize that is not an appropriate or healthy response when your partner is trying to communicate with you.
I did try to hear him. I gifted him some lingerie for the first time and let him take a boudoir photo shoot of me wearing it. I started sending a few more cute messages. I tried to make more time to cuddle with him when he would ask. I tried to give him more hugs. I tried to thank him more for picking up around the house. I wrote him a cute letter and surprised him with a few gifts for Easter. However, about a month ago, we had another one of those conversations. Except this time the first things he brought up were 'wondering what else is out there' and talking about how other girls are always complimenting him. Again came the walls and extra defensiveness. I ended up writing him a letter talking about how I didn't know if I could ever be what he wanted me to be and that maybe he should think about calling things off. This was obviously a defense mechanism to try to beat him to the punch line and talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy. Three weeks later he would sit me down and tell me he wanted to know what else was out there again and that he didn't know if he could go through with marrying me. My efforts did not feel like enough for him and I understand why. I was having a hard time connecting my emotions with my actions which made my actions seem reactionary and not genuine or provoked by love.
I have been through a lot more trauma in my life than I realized. My dad was in the Navy while I was growing up. We had to move every three years. A very pivotal point in my life was when we moved when I was in the 6th grade. I lived right next door to my best friend. I was finding my love for math and theater. I also played soccer and was a Girl Scout. When we moved, I became very depressed, though I didn't understand that's what it was at the time. I stopped all of my extracurricular activities. I stopped getting too close to people because I knew I would have to move or they would have to move eventually. I mostly stayed in my room and kept to myself, even from my family. I also have struggled with anxiety for as long as I can remember. Then, in my senior year of high school, I got my first-ever boyfriend. We were in a relationship for over 4 years. In that relationship, I would always be the one to try to talk about our problems. I would be the one who would always want longer hugs and more cuddles. But it was not a healthy relationship. We broke up and got back together many times. I found several illicit texts to other girls on multiple occasions and he would always gaslight me by saying his younger brother stole his phone or I misinterpreted the messages. I think this caused me not to want to show my emotions because it wasn't reciprocated and resulted in heartache. Then, three years ago my younger brother died in a tragic car accident at the age of 17.
When I realized I could lose the love of my life, I realized that he was right about me not being affectionate enough. I had built up walls to protect myself. I thought I had made progress on my anxiety and depression, but I realized I was wrong. I also realized that I have issues with communication, trust, and vulnerability. I was a great partner in other ways and I did express my love in other ways. I moved across the country, coast to coast, with him to a state where I didn't know anyone so that he could attend his dream school. I take care of the household. I get the majority of the groceries. I do all of the cooking. I do all of the maintenance cleaning. I take care of our 2 cats and 1 dog. I say all of those in the present tense because we currently still live together but are sleeping in separate rooms. I also financially supported him by lending him money and letting him pay less of the rent because I made more money. I accept all of him including that he has terrible time management skills, he can have a hard time controlling his emotions at times, and he is disorganized and messy. I also accepted that I would have to wait for marriage and children because of his school and accepted that he did not have a lot of free time between school, work, and his hobbies. I supported his love for his hobbies by accepting his purchasing of expensive equipment even when he owed me money, traveling to watch several events that were important to him, and traveling to see him win an award from his job. I would write heartfelt cards for every holiday. I also bought him dozens of children's books about love that I wanted us to read to our children one day.
When I realized I could lose him, I felt something change inside me. It was like I could feel a hole being blown in the wall I had built up. I felt all my love for him overwhelm me. I couldn't hug him, kiss him, or tell him I love him enough. I tried to talk to him to apologize for my behavior and how badly I'd hurt him. I tried to explain how I felt like a different person and how I really wanted to work hard on improving myself as a partner to make our relationship work. I tried to prove my words with actions. I wrote a list of things I needed to work on including communication and being more affectionate. I also wrote out a list of ways to work on those things and actually started doing the things on the list. Some of the items I had already begun to do like hug and kiss him more and tell him I love him more. I also tried to ask more questions about his interests/hobbies/day. I was more vulnerable and talked with him about my feelings more. I even initiated intimacy, something I had really only done once in a blue moon when I was intoxicated.
Despite all of my efforts, over the next two weeks, he continued to say he did not know if he could be with me and wanted to know what else was out there. I did try to hear him. I gifted him some lingerie for the first time and let him take a boudoir photo shoot of me wearing it. I started sending a few more cute messages. I tried to make more time to cuddle with him when he would ask. I tried to give him more hugs. I tried to thank him more for picking up around the house. I wrote him a cute letter and surprised him with a few gifts for Easter. However, about a month ago, we had another one of those conversations. Except this time the first things he brought up were 'wondering what else is out there' and talking about how other girls are always complimenting him. Again came the walls and extra defensiveness. I ended up writing him a letter talking about how I didn't know if I could ever be what he wanted me to be and that maybe he should think about calling things off. This was obviously a defense mechanism to try to beat him to the punch line and talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy. A very pivotal point in my life was when we moved when I was in the 6th grade. I lived right next door to my best friend. I was finding my love for math and theater. I also played soccer and was a Girl Scout. When we moved, I became very depressed, though I didn't understand that's what it was at the time. I stopped all of my extracurricular activities. I stopped getting too close to people because I knew I would have to move or they would have to move eventually. I mostly stayed in my room and kept to myself, even from my family. I also have struggled with anxiety for as long as I can remember. Then, in my senior year of high school, I got my first-ever boyfriend. We were in a relationship for over 4 years. In that relationship, I would always be the one to try to talk about our problems. I would be the one who would always want longer hugs and more cuddles. But it was not a healthy relationship. We broke up and got back together many times. I found several illicit texts to other girls on multiple occasions and he would always gaslight me by saying his younger brother stole his phone or I misinterpreted the messages. I think this caused me not to want to show my emotions because it wasn't reciprocated and resulted in heartache. Then, three years ago my younger brother died in a tragic car accident at the age of 17.
When I realized I could lose the love of my life, I realized that he was right about me not being affectionate enough. I had built up walls to protect myself. I thought I had made progress on my anxiety and depression, but I realized I was wrong. I also realized that I have issues with communication, trust, and vulnerability. I was a great partner in other ways and I did express my love in other ways. I moved across the country, coast to coast, with him to a state where I didn't know anyone so that he could attend his dream school. I take care of the household. I get the majority of the groceries. I do all of the cooking. I do all of the maintenance cleaning. I take care of our 2 cats and 1 dog. I say all of those in the present tense because we currently still live together but are sleeping in separate rooms. I also financially supported him by lending him money and letting him pay less of the rent because I made more money. I accept all of him including that he has terrible time management skills, he can have a hard time controlling his emotions at times, and he is disorganized and messy. I also accepted that I would have to wait for marriage and children because of his school and accepted that he did not have a lot of free time between school, work, and his hobbies. I supported his love for his hobbies by accepting his purchasing of expensive equipment even when he owed me money, traveling to watch several events that were important to him, and traveling to see him win an award from his job. I would write heartfelt cards for every holiday. I also bought him dozens of children's books about love that I wanted us to read to our children one day.

For me, both of my parents are narcissists. My older sister unfortunately has narcissistic tendencies so she's probably going to be like them soon. I stopped all communication with my Ndad like 7 years ago. I'm still underage so I live with my Nmom. We have a lot of good days but the bad ones just suck. She has a major victim complex and quite literally can't be told she's doing something wrong. We used to argue A LOT when I was 14 but I've slowly just stopped saying things to her. I keep it to myself. If I called her out for things it would ruin the relationship we do have. If I didn't have little siblings I wouldn't care about ruining our relationship and going no contact, but I have to stay good with her to keep our family together pretty much. My little siblings are very young and they do not need to be surrounded in a toxic environment constantly. If I brought things up I genuinely believe our house would not be the same. She would somehow be the one mad at me. I of course would be mad at her. She is unapproachable when she's mad at you. She holds grudges BAD too.
For example, I was like 14 and insinuated she was a bad mom (it was when we argued a lot I can't remember the exact reasoning on why because that time period is almost completely blocked out in my head) and she's like "wow you're really gonna call me a bad mom" and I never SAID that to begin with but I'm like "yeah sure if that's what you wanna think I meant then yeah" and she literally held that against me for years. Now, I shouldn't have said that but I was 14. And in a VERY bad mental place caused by her. I was just angry. I apologized like a million times and she'd still hold it against me. She no longer mentions it but I'm sure she would if we argued as much as we used to.
My possibility Nolder sister can't be told she's wrong either. Although, instead of getting mad like my mom does she COMPLETELY shuts down. Comes up with a million excuses that aren't justifiable and nothing ever gets solved. She moved away and we have little to no contact now.
My point is, when I do try to call them out, it just makes things worse and make the environment around us insanely tense. But me keeping my mouth shut and pretending everything is ok is starting to take a huge toll on me. In end of 2023, I started having panic attacks when me and my mom argue. I hyperventilate and she notices but just walks away. My step dad walked me through it once but every other time I have to deal with it on my own. I'm fine most days but every now and then I'm just straight up depressed and spend a few days rethinking life. So, it's hard to tell what's worth it. I have accepted that I'm going to have to deal with this until my little siblings are adults. Even then I will probably still have to deal with her. Also, where I live it's VERY unrealistic to move out at 18. (Honestly it's like that anywhere nowdays) I most likely won't be able to afford to move out on my own for awhile. Even if I get a boyfriend it might still be hard for a bit. So, I most likely won't move out until early twenties. So I'm just not sure what to do anymore. I don't even know what I want from her. If she gets somehow better I'm still never forgiving her for the things she has done. But I feel like I can't hate her. She's still my mom and she isn't all bad. How can I love her but also how can I hate her? Sometimes I wish all my problems could just magically disappear. Because life just doesn't even feel real. I genuinely can't think of a healthy life for me even in the future. I definitely struggle with my mental health a lot and I'm just not sure how I'm ever going to be able to fix it. For me, both of my parents are narcissists. My older sister unfortunately has narcissistic tendencies so she's probably going to be like them soon. My family on my mom's and dad's side all have some sort of mental issues. I'm not sure that's the only thing I can think of to explain their behavior. I've been treated terribly by my entire family my whole life. Just a lot of mental abuse I guess. Definitely not nearly as bad as what a lot of you have had to deal with but it's still taken a toll on me. I feel like I'm nothing like any of them. My mom passed away suddenly in her sleep earlier this month. The medical examiner found she had cirrhosis of the liver. She had been struggling with fatigue, poor appetite, and overall feeling bad in the weeks prior to her death, but I never thought it would result in this. I'm devastated. My mom originally turned to alcohol years ago to cope with my abusive dad. She filed for divorce last year, found a loving & supportive partner, and was doing really well. But she couldn't kick this damn thing. She went to rehab for about a month last year and I got the items she brought home. One of her assignments while she was there was to paint a mask - the front was what she portrayed to the outside world, while the inside showed how she really felt. In her paper explaining her mask, she said she felt like a loser for not being able to get sober. And that absolutely broke me. My mom and I had a few rocky years during her addiction, but these past 2 years we had gotten back to our close relationship. I know how badly she wanted to get sober. She finally had a great support team motivating her, she had started to gain some of her confidence back.I was so looking forward to seeing her free of this disease. None of it is fair and my heart is shattered. I miss my momma.

I’ve been in about 5 serious romantic relationships since early high school and I’ve initiated the breakup in all of them. Is it weird to not really feel bad about each one?
The last two really stand out to me. The first one lasted a year, we fell in love and out of nowhere intimacy died 3 months in. I need to feel physical intimacy to really feel loved so after trying for 9 months I dumped him. He was crushed, but i didn’t really cry or feel much regret for the situation. Of course I felt bad for him and wasn’t ruthless or mean when I broke up with him, I just didn’t really feel loved myself and didn’t want to feel like a roommate. I was mostly just relieved I could put mental energy into myself.
2 months ago I met this amazing man. He’s my type, romantic, good career, we can talk about everything and anything, i’ve never been able to talk to someone so genuine in my life. I don’t really believe in soulmates, but he’s pretty close to one. Today he told me he’s not really willing to be long distance, and i broke things off with him because i need to stay and take care of my family. He was destroyed, but I can’t help but feel indifference towards the whole situation. My friends told me this is sorta weird behavior, is this wrong?
I feel bad when I hurt people, but I don’t feel hurt myself when this happens. I’m not depressed, I don’t have this indifference towards anything else really, only when we break up. I just think there’s plenty of fish in the sea and if this one didn’t work out, it is what it is. I have a very active life, good job, and hobbies I pursue every day, but i’m not too busy so they get in the way of relationships. i have a lot of free time. Is this a symptom of something? should i stop this? i dont really know how

Since we have been together I have been on birth control pills and we have always used condoms, the issue is that I would like to try new things in our relationship and one of those is to stop using condoms, we are a stable couple financially and also in the relationship, we have talked about getting married, and we have the same expectations so I don't see why not, however he flatly refuses because he insists that he has never done it without and prefers not to.
I want to clarify that I do NOT want to give up the condom because of an issue of having a child, I do NOT want a child at this time either, basically I base it more on doing something out of the rule and routine, as well as more intimate. The issue is that I had to give up a lot of things in terms of sexuality for him, plus I have been taking the pills for a long time without any purpose (he has also expressed to me that he prefers that I don't stop taking them).
So I've been thinking if I'm exaggerating and this is just a big problem for men? and I need to be more patience, if he is hiding something from me or if he should just accept that we are not sexually compatible and let it be? What should I do??

My (18m) mom is psychotic, but for whatever reason nobody in my family gives a shit. She has always been a little crazy (she believes in every conspiracy theory in the book), but she didn’t really go off the deep end until my dad divorced her when I was 4. Since then, she has gotten progressively crazier to an unmanageable level. I could write an epic just filled with everything she’s done that’s crazy, but I will just hit the highlights.

- when I was in kindergarten, she told me on the way home from school that Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, and everything in between were not real.
- when I was a child, she constantly filled my head with the idea that I was going to be tortured and killed in the future for being a Christian. She also made it seem like I was going to go to hell if I sinned at all. I used to shower and bathe at the hottest temperature possible as a kid because i wanted to get prepared for hell.
- when I was 8 years old, she joined a cult (or pseudo religion, or whatever you want to call it) called Hebrew Roots. The basic premise was Judaism plus Jesus, but with no grace. From 8 years old and on she had me follow the rules of Judaism (rest on Friday and Saturday, don’t eat certain foods, etc,) even though I am not Jewish.
- since I was 8, she has taken me on numerous “vacations” which mostly consisted of visiting a friend in her religion (most notably a Native American chief) and studying the Old Testament for 10-12 hours a day.
- my sister used to live with my mom. For her 21st birthday, she “wore a revealing dress and went to the club on a Friday night (sabbath)” my mom kicked her out of the house for this, and she was homeless for some time.
- she said to me “where did we go wrong with you?” Because I said I didn’t like to cook (not in a joking way)
- she constantly pitted me against my dad when I was a kid, from sending him an email to “not persecute my religion”, to telling me my brother chose my dad and my sister chose her, and I would have to choose a side
- she constantly has childlike temper tantrums and meltdowns for no reason. I always have to comfort her, and most of my life I have felt like I had to be a parent to her instead of the other way around -she gets upset at anything and everything “non-biblical”
- one time, I wasn’t showing just enough excitement about what she was talking about (I think Old Testament numerals) and she started to sob and recount everything bad that has ever happened to her (everything from my dad divorcing her to her high school boyfriend cheating on her)
- one time, she saw MF DOOM rings I had put in the Amazon shopping cart, and said that I was “opening a portal to the spirit world”
- I started seeing a therapist about a year and a half ago, and she has probably said 25 plus times that she “respects confidentiality.” Then, in a recent vacation, she had a meltdown when I refused to share what I talked to my therapist about, and told my dad I “have no interest in having a relationship” with her.

I need to feel physical intimacy to really feel loved so after trying for 9 months I dumped him. He was crushed, but i didn’t really cry or feel much regret for the situation. Of course I felt bad for him and wasn’t ruthless or mean when I broke up with him, I just didn’t really feel loved myself and didn’t want to feel like a roommate. I was mostly just relieved I could put mental energy into myself.
2 months ago I met this amazing man. He’s my type, romantic, good career, we can talk about everything and anything, i’ve never been able to talk to someone so genuine in my life. I don’t really believe in soulmates, but he’s pretty close to one. Today he told me he’s not really willing to be long distance, and i broke things off with him because i need to stay and take care of my family. He was destroyed, but I can’t help but feel indifference towards the whole situation. My friends told me this is sorta weird behavior, is this wrong?
I feel bad when I hurt people, but I don’t feel hurt myself when this happens. I’m not depressed, I don’t have this indifference towards anything else really, only when we break up. I just think there’s plenty of fish in the sea and if this one didn’t work out, it is what it is. I have a very active life, good job, and hobbies I pursue every day, but i’m not too busy so they get in the way of relationships. i have a lot of free time. Is this a symptom of something? should i stop this? i dont really know how
