2024.06.02 00:00 gistya NBA careers of players with similar NCAA performance to Zach Edey
Here are some interesting statistics on Zach Edey's from the last college season. I'll also post some combine stats in the comments, where we can see Edey's mobility to be comparable to starting NBA centers.
We'll look at how the NBA careers fared of:
- college big men (above 6' 6") who played Forward or Center with all-time best NCAA scoring seasons
- college big men (above 7' 0") with all-time best NCAA scoring seasons who were drafted in the first round and scored over 500 points in college
- college players with all-time best win shares who competed in the NCAA Final Four
- players who posted similar NCAA seasons in terms of scoring, rebounding, and blocks per 100 minutes to Zach Edey
Note: we look at all-time numbers due to the lack of comparable propsects in the last 20 years (Hibert and Thabeet being really the only two above 7' that are remotely similar.)

2024 NBA Draft Combine
At the combine, Zach Edey posted an impressive lane agility time of 11.19 sec. Projected #1 pick Alex Sarr's time: 11.43 sec. Projected lottery pick Cody Williams had an 11.17 sec. time. Donovan Clingan was one of the slowest in the draft at 12.06, nearly a second slower than Edey.
Edey's 3.01 sec. shuttle run time was faster than Bronny James' 3.02 and Reed Sheppard's 3.03, and they're two of the most athletic guards in the draft. Alex Sarr's time? 3.23 sec. Clingan? 3.38 sec.
On the 3/4-court sprint (75 feet), Edey's time of 3.42 seconds compares well with times posted by current NBA starting centers such as Steven Adams (3.40 sec.) and Rudy Gobert (3.57 sec.).
Source: NBA.com. Note: prior years' draft combine results for lane agility and shuttle run drills are not directly comparable between draft classes.
Free throw attempts all-time:
Edey has:
- the #7 highest free-throw makes in a single NCAA season since 1947-48 with 310 (just below Oscar Robertson's 316)
- the #2 highest free-throw attempts in a single NCAA season since 1947-48 with 436 (tied with Pete Maravich)
The
top 40 NBA players with the highest free throw attempts in an NBA season are all HoFers or future HoFers (unless Dwight Howard or Ron Artest doesn't get in).
Analysis of Edey's ability to live at the foul line
here.
Defense Analysis
We already know the concern about Edey's perimter defense, and you can see that he posted the lowest defensive win shares among players with at least 9.9 win shares. The primary concern as to whether Edey can be a starter in the NBA been centered around Edey's ability to handle switching onto smaller players on the perimeter. Edey stayed an extra year at Purdue to work on his weight, lateral agility, and footwork in an effort to address this concern, which was raised following Edey testing the draft waters in the summer of 2023.
Here is a recent video showing examples of the progress Edey made this season on switches. He will never be Kawhi Leonard at the perimeter, but the consensus among many anaylists has shown a level of improvement in a short amount of time that alleviates enough of this concern that he is projected by many now as a late lottery pick or just outside the lottery. (The lastest ESPN mock draft has Edey going #15 to the Heat.)
Of course, aside from this one concern, Edey is considered a strong defender and rim protector. While it's unlikely he will surpass Victor Wembanyama in DPOY votes anytime soon, his college stats are skewed a bit due to generally trying to avoid fouls during the first half of games, opting out of moving contests and reaches. In the league, Edey will be more free to go after any and all attempts near the rim.
Offense Analysis
Edey's ability to score and get to the line has been rather unprecendented in recent history:
- Edey posted the highest offensive win shares of players who played at least 30 games in college, above the likes of Tim Duncan, Steph Curry, and Zion Williamson.
- Edey is third all-time in the NCAA for trips to the FT line in a season (and #8 in makes) since 1947-8.
Being able to get the other team into foul trouble while being a reliable free-throw shooter is a unique art that has defensive benefits and timeless value at the NBA level. Removing one of the other team's best players from the floor while also scoring points is not exactly a stat whose impact is easily tracked, but we all know how big a factor it can be in the NBA Finals (as any Portland fan who watched Sabonis foul out in the 2000 conference finals can attest!).
If you look at a list of the
NBA's all-time leaders in free throw attempts per season, it is a who's who of the Hall of Fame. Wilt Chamberlain dominates the top 10 slots followed by Jerry West, Shaq, Jordan, Barkely, Malone, Robinson, Dwight, etc. Almost everyone non-HoF player on that list is either an active player destined to be in the HoF one day (Durant, Giannis, LeBron, Harden, Embiid, Westbrook) or they're Ron Artest. Yet while in the NCAA, most of those guys never came close to Edey's free throw attempt numbers.
While we keep hearing how it's harder now for NBA centers to get to the line, it seems like it's not any harder than it used to be. Now it's just easier for perimeter shooters to get to the line than in Jordan's era.
Still though, we have seen plenty of success from scoring bigs in getting to the FT line over the last 10 years: Joel Embid, DeMarcus Cousins, and Dwight Howard each have posted dominant seasons in this regard (perhaps in Dwight's case due partly to hack-a-Dwight, but I digress). Again, none of those guys posted FTA figures anywhere close to Edey during their NCAA years.
Another concern about Edey has been his perimeter and mid-range shooting. Edey has emphasized to the media that while it was not part of Purdue's offense, it has been something he works on diligently, and is ready to show off to NBA teams. At the combine, he did impress scouts with his shooting, but it remains to be seen how effective he could be in actual game situations. If his free-throw shooting is any indication, he has solid mechanics, and the former baseball pitcher could develop into a Brook Lopez trajectory if he is able to become efficient enough. When Jokic came into the league, he only shot 30.7% from 3 initially, but we have seen how his progression went.
Comparison to Clingan
In the 2024 National Championship game between Purdue and UConn, UConn's Donovan Clingan (Edey's primary rival in the draft), a 7' 2" center who averages 7.4 boards, was held to 5 rebounds by Edey in that game, while Edey went off for 37 pts., 10 rebs., and 2 blocks. (Purdue lost by 15, but I think it was mainly due to the rest of UConn's players dominating the glass, due to not being blocked out.)
UConn's own head coach said of Edey that if he is not a lottery pick with a tremendous NBA career, then "there's somethin' wrong with the NBA," while comparing Zach to Patrick Ewing and David Robinson.
Source. Clingan also missed time his senior year due to tendon injuries in his foot. Meanwhile Edey played the most minutes of anyone in the NCAA tournament at what appeared to be 100% health. In my personal opinion (and this is not at all scientific), Edey displays a symmetrical, well-proportioned look that reminds me more of Tim Duncan than of most 7' 4" guys like Boban or similar, which is a good indication for longevity. Asymetrical people like Greg Oden have experienced very short careers.
One argument I've heard in favor of Clingan has been that he "processes the game faster" than Edey. I have seen no evidence for this is, but Edey being relatively new to basketball (came over from hockey and baseball) could mean that his reaction times and perception of the game might be a handicap at the next level compared to someone who has been playing since a younger age.
Misperceptions
When we look at players with similar college seasons and accolades to Zach Edey, it is common for some reason for folks to lump Zach in with the likes of Luka Garza and Tyler Hansbrough: dominant centers in college who simply lacked the size, athleticism, and outside shooting to have much of a role in the NBA.
Of course, that is kind of a ridiculous comparison, since we don't know what Luka Garza's NBA career would look like, if he had been able to do similar things in college but was 7' 4" with a 7' 11" wingspan. Further, Garza did not put up numbers remotely similar to what Edey posted in the NCAA.
Similarly, when we look at players with similar size to Edey (and there are very few), most of them are just too slow and uncoordinated to ever get more than a few minutes per game, even if they can shoot (Bol Bol, Boban, etc.). So there's a misperception that Edey must be slow simply due to his size being similar to those types of players. Yet if Edey was really that slow, why were his combine times so good?
I suspect a lot of the opinions on Edey are misinformed due to being based on footage from his freshman or sophomore years and not indicative of who he has developed into, but feel free to leave comments with links to videos that you think provide evidence for Edey still being too slow for the league.
Bottom Line for the Blazers Draft Picks regarding Edey
The Blazers will forever have Sam Bowie/Greg Oden syndrome. Yet if we're objective about it, it should be clear that wasting a #2 pick on fit rather than "best player available" is always a bad call. Further, had Greg Oden remained healthy, few people doubt he could have led Portland on some deep runs.
Now, my argument has always been that Kevin Durant's display of overall basketball skill and shooting ability should have made him the #1 pick in that draft, or almost any draft. No offense to Oden. And further, when the Blazers checked Oden's medical history and discovered he'd had an early surgery to shorten one of his legs, this ought to have been enough of a red flag to make them not burn a #1 pick on him.
In this draft however, we're not talking about whether Zach Edey should go #1 overall. It's more of a question of whether he will be the best player available at the Blazers' draft positions of #7 and #14, or even just, the best center available.
ESPN sees Edey going #15 to Miami, so it's hard not to see that if the Blazers passed on Clingan but still wanted a center, then taking Edey at #14 would be a no-brainer.
So the real question is, could Edey go higher than #14? The top two projections I've heard for Edey in the lottery are OKC at #12 and San Antonio at #8. These teams could feel that Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama might need a backup where you don't sacrifice any length or paint offense, so they can run a more consistent system.
I don't know whether that's realistic to happen, but if it starts to look that way, then is there a universe where it makes sense for the Blazers to take Edey at #7? Most people say "no."
But when you consider the all-time history of 7' 1" or taller players who could score like Zach in college, then the question is really, "Would Wilt, Kareem, or even Yao be a top-7 pick in the draft this year?" What did those guys show in their pre-NBA careers that Edey hasn't shown, which would have justified it?
I'm curious to hear your takes.

2024.05.31 23:03 next3days Local Weekend Lineup of Fun for 1st Weekend in June....
For those in Blacksburg, here's a rundown of 28 local events you can enjoy in Blacksburg and throughout the New River Valley as June arrives.
Weekend Rundown of Local Fun: 1. Matt Holloman in Concert Rising Silo Farm Brewery, Blacksburg Friday, May 31, 2024, 6:00 - 9:00 PM Admission: Free Born and raised in southeastern Virginia, Matt Holloman has been playing around Virginia for more than 25 years. Growing up on his older brother’s blues collection, Matt mixed the likes of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters with the experimental sounds of songwriters like Leonard Cohen and Frank Black, creating a style all his own. Always interested in reinventing his live performance, Matt uses a looper so he can improvise and manipulate layers of sound not usually heard from an acoustic performer. You can also expect simple, but memorable songs, reminiscent of storytelling songwriters like John Prine and Bob Dylan.

The Grascals in Concert Little River Bluegrass Barn, Radford Friday, May 31, 2024, 7:00 - 10:00 PM General Admission: $30.00, Reserved Tickets: $35.00 Great musicians will always find a way to make good music, but for great musicians to make great music, they must form a bond – one that, more often than not, goes beyond the purely musical to the personal. For The Grascals, that bond has been forged at the intersection of personal friendships, shared professional resumes and an appreciation for the innovative mingling of bluegrass and country music that has been a hallmark of the Nashville scene for more than 40 years. Their cutting-edge modern bluegrass is delivered with a deep knowledge of, and admiration for, the work of the music’s founding fathers. Timely yet timeless, The Grascals make music that is entirely relevant to the here and now yet immersed in traditional values of soul and musicianship. It’s a unique sound that has earned three Grammy® nominations and two Entertainer of the Year awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association, as well as national media attention that seems to perpetually elude acts entrenched in niche genres. Such appearances include The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Fox & Friends, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and CBS’ The Talk. The Grascals have over 200 guest appearances on the Grand Ole Opry to their credit and have also performed on the revered stages of Radio City Music Hall, the Ryman Auditorium and the Kennedy Center as well as music festivals such as MerleFest, Stagecoach, and the CMA Music Festival. In addition to performing across the United States and Canada, the awarding-winning band has traveled the world to take bluegrass music to Japan, Greece, France, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, and Belgium.

2024.05.29 21:11 pink-opossum Who else wishes Izzie died instead of George?
| - I HATE Izzie, one of the worst characters in my opinion. The only reason I like that she stays alive longer than George is so Alex can tell her off for treating him so poorly. Wish that she had died instead of George and wish even more that they didn't give her a happy/successful story line later on. Her character doesn't deserve to be a doctor and doesn't deserve Alex as a partner, or his kids. She should have just been fired and license revoked after cutting the LVAD wire and that's it. A Sadie-type storyline would have been way more fitting for her character.
- My favorite thing about the show is seeing people find their spark for a speciality and then exploring and excelling in it. George was JUST truly starting on his career journey in trauma. Even if he still left the show, he could have had such an incredible story line, it could have been similar to how they handle Cristina leaving later on. I thought it was so cool when he found his specialty and passion, I wanted people to see him be successful and be proud of him - but nope. He's just gone. Could have been known for saving countless people, but instead is known for saving one singular person that no one even likes/isn't insignificant.
-- I feel the same way about Heather Brooks, she was a unique character that showed a spark for a speciality and was just really getting into it - and then she gets f*ed over by Shane and is just gone. All the potential lost. I also feel the same way about Shane that I do about Izzie, I don't think he's quite as bad, but it's frustrating that he gets this really cool, successful story line after doing what he did to Heather. And she obviously gets literally nothing. submitted by pink-opossum to greysanatomy [link] [comments] |
2024.05.29 10:22 AdmiralKurita Against the charge that President Yanukovych was a "Kremlin puppet"
For all the charges then and since that he was a Kremlin puppet, though, there was a hard ceiling to Yanukovych’s eastward turn. His noncommittal stance on joining a Russian-led customs union of former Soviet republics, even when Putin dangled the prospect of even cheaper gas prices, frustrated Moscow. So did his outright rejection of Putin’s proposal to merge the two nations’ respective state-owned gas giants, effectively handing Moscow control of the Ukrainian pipelines it used to ferry almost all of its gas exports to Europe. In turn, Moscow refused to renegotiate the hated and one-sided 2009 gas contract between the two that had been struck by the last Ukrainian government.
Meanwhile, Yanukovych worked with and publicly encouraged Western involvement in updating Ukraine’s natural gas infrastructure and insisted again and again that “European integration is the key priority of our foreign policy.” He kept working toward European Union membership, and to that end pursued a free trade agreement with the EU as well as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan the West urged him to take.
That financial lifeline came with a heavy price familiar to the many poor countries that have turned to the West for bailouts: the elimination of tariffs, a wage and pension freeze, spending cuts, and the end of gas subsidies to Ukrainian households. The grim potential of such Western-imposed austerity, on display for all to see in Greece at the time, was presumably worth it to Yanukovych if it kept Moscow’s nose out of his business.
It was all this that led the liberal Brookings Institution to describe Yanukovych’s foreign policy as “more nuanced” than his pro-Russian leanings had first suggested. It was also what wound up sealing his fate.
To halt this drift to the West, Putin performed a one-man good-cop, bad-cop routine, offering Yanukovych a no-strings-attached loan the same size as the IMF’s, while squeezing him with what amounted to a mini–trade blockade. With the EU failing to offer anything that would match the catastrophic loss of trade with Russia that Ukraine was looking at, Yanukovych made the calculated choice to go with Moscow’s offer. In November, he abruptly reneged on the EU deal, sparking the protests that would topple him from power.

2024.05.27 23:35 Key-Win7744 Bond's Gallery of Oscar Winners
I like to do little projects like this from time to time as pertaining to my passions, so, for anyone who's interested in which Bond actors over the years have become Academy Award winners, here's a compilation I've put together, with a bit of a write-up on each. There are twelve in all, counting three Oscar winners who have appeared in the non-Eon Bond films.
William Holden
Having appeared in such legendary greats as Sunset Boulevard, Sabrina, and The Bridge on the River Kwai, William Holden found himself slumming it in 1967's Casino Royale when he appeared as CIA chief Ransome, joining M at the beginning of the movie in exhorting David Niven's James Bond to return to active duty. He had won his Best Actor award many years prior, for his role as the cynical Sergeant J. J. Sefton in 1953's Stalag 17, directed by Billy Wilder.
His competition for Best Actor that year included Marlon Brando for Julius Caesar, Richard Burton for The Robe, and both Montgomery Clift and Burt Lancaster for From Here to Eternity.
David Niven
The debonair David Niven (who was actually suggested as a possible Bond by Ian Fleming) won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of the maligned Major David Angus Pollock in the 1958 ensemble drama Separate Tables. With just twenty-three minutes and thirty-nine seconds of total screen time, his is the briefest performance ever to be awarded Best Actor. The win came at what would be the midpoint of Niven's career, after he had starred in A Matter of Life and Death, Around the World in 80 Days, and My Man Godfrey, but before The Guns of Navarone, The Pink Panther, and Casino Royale.
Niven was up against some extremely stiff competition here. Other contenders for Best Actor that year included Paul Newman for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Spencer Tracy for The Old Man and the Sea, and both Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier for The Defiant Ones.
Christopher Walken
The future Max Zorin won his Oscar relatively early in his career, garnering Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the ill-fated Corporal Nick Chevotarevich in 1978's The Deer Hunter. That was his breakout, and all of his most famous roles followed. Though he was a relative newcomer to Hollywood, the Academy likely made the right choice, as his competition from that year has since faded into comparative obscurity. They include Bruce Dern for Coming Home, Richard Farnsworth for Comes a Horseman, John Hurt for Midnight Express, and Jack Warden for Heaven Can Wait.
Sean Connery
After years of trying to break out of James Bond's shadow, Sean Connery was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his performance as James Malone, honest cop and mentor to Elliot Ness, in 1987's The Untouchables. Though hardly a pauper when it came to meaty roles, this would be the start of a new, bigger era of Hollywood stardom for Connery, particularly in the recurring role of the older, wiser mentor figure, opposite younger, brasher co-stars like Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, Wesley Snipes, Richard Gere, Nicolas Cage, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Similar to that of Christopher Walken, Connery's contemporary competition seems to have faded over time, none holding up like his turn in The Untouchables. They include Albert Brooks for Broadcast News, Morgan Freeman for Street Smart, Vincent Gardenia for Moonstruck, and Denzel Washington for Cry Freedom.
Kim Basinger
Fourteen years after she played Domino Petachi in Never Say Never Again, Kim Basinger was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her performance as femme fatale Lynn Bracken in 1997's L.A. Confidential. The 1980s had been her decade, culminating with the success of Tim Burton's Batman in 1989, but her career fizzled a bit in the early 1990s, leading her into semi-retirement. Her star turn in L.A. Confidential was a triumphant resurgence. Her competition included Joan Cusack for In & Out, Minnie Driver for Good Will Hunting, Julianne Moore for Boogie Nights, and Gloria Stewart for Titanic.
Judi Dench
Shortly after assuming the mantle of M in the James Bond series, the prolific Dame Judi Dench won Best Supporting Actress for her brief but memorable turn as Queen Elizabeth I in 1998's Shakespeare in Love. After an already long and distinguished career in theater, film, and television, Dench's Hollywood profile expanded greatly around this time, leading to many high profile roles and additional Oscar nominations.
At not quite six minutes total, Dench's screen time in Shakespeare in Love might seem so brief as to be easily dismissed, but, like the runners-up of certain other years on this list, her competition has not endured in the annals of popular culture. They include Kathy Bates for Primary Colors, Brenda Blethyn for Little Voice, Rachel Griffiths for Hilary and Jackie, and Lynn Redgrave for Gods and Monsters.
Benicio del Toro
Bond fans likely still associate Benicio del Toro with the sadistic, knife-wielding thug Dario in Licence to Kill, though his career has grown quite varied and distinguished since then. He won Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of jaded but honest police officer Javier Rodriguez in the 2000 film Traffic. He competed against Jeff Bridges for The Contender, Willem Dafoe for Shadow of the Vampire, Albert Finney for Erin Brokovich, and, perhaps most impressively, Joaquin Phoenix in the role of the evil Emperor Commodus for Gladiator.
Halle Berry
Bond girls, at the time of their casting in a 007 movie, usually range from the lesser known to the completely unknown. Halle Berry, by contrast, was an international superstar and Oscar winner before Eon ever came calling. She was the first African-American woman to win Best Actress, for her performance as Letitia Musgrove in the 2001 film Monster's Ball. Though at the top of the world then, her star seemed to decline over the ensuing years, with a series of less prestigious, less popular roles, often in unsuccessful projects.
Halle Berry triumphed over an impressive field of contenders, including Judi Dench for Iris, Nicole Kidman for Moulin Rouge!, Sissy Spacek for In the Bedroom, and Renee Zellweger for Bridget Jones's Diary.
Javier Bardem
After a distinguished career in Spanish films, Javier Bardem won Best Supporting Actor (and made his Hollywood breakthrough) for his portrayal of the seemingly unstoppable psychopath Anton Chigurh in 2007's No Country For Old Men. His eerie, chilling performance gave him the edge over such worthy competitors as Philip Seymour Hoffman in Charlie Wilson's War, Hal Holbrook in Into the Wild, Tom Wilkinson in Michael Clayton, and Casey Affleck in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
Christoph Waltz
Christoph Waltz is the only actor on this list to have won two Academy Awards, both while working for Quentin Tarantino. He won Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the evil Colonel Hans Landa in 2009's Inglourious Basterds, then again for the role of bounty hunter King Schultz in 2012's Django Unchained. This is especially impressive considering his career prior to 2009 had consisted almost exclusively of roles in German movies and TV shows. As soon as he became a known commodity in Hollywood, he started raking in the awards.
His competition in 2009 included Matt Damon in Invictus, Woody Harrelson in The Messenger, Christopher Plummer in The Last Station, and Stanley Tucci in The Lovely Bones. His competition in 2012 included Alan Arkin in Argo, Robert De Niro in Silver Linings Playbook, Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master, and Tommy Lee Jones in Lincoln.
Rami Malek
Rami Malek was awarded Best Actor for his portrayal of Queen lead vocalist Freddie Mercury in 2018's Bohemian Rhapsody. Though the film is controversial, Malek's spot-on impression of Mercury helped him soar to victory over such worthy competition as Christian Bale in Vice, Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born, Willem Dafoe in At Eternity's Gate, and Viggo Mortensen in Green Book.
Michelle Yeoh
The latest member of Bond's Oscar club, Michelle Yeoh was awarded Best Actress for her performance as multiverse-traveling Evelyn Wang in 2022's surreal sci-fi comedy Everything Everywhere All at Once. Her competition included Cate Blanchett for Tar, Andrea Riseborough for To Leslie, Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans, and fellow Bond girl Ana de Armas for Blonde.

2024.05.27 02:10 theconstellinguist Narcissistic Behavior and the Economy: The Role of Virtues
https://www.marketsandmorality.com/index.php/mandm/article/viewFile/109/103 The financial crisis is argued, in this research, to be caused by narcissists who ignored risk management in order to satisfy greed addiction. - Several prominent commentators and academics have asserted that the current global financial crisis was caused, in part, by the narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) of corporate leaders who substituted robust risk management for greed and personal gains by promoting self-serving and grandiose aims.
Ivy league schools are argued to breed narcissists due to a grandiose sense of entitlement and lack of humility, a criticism often coming from within the Ivy Leagues themselves. - Several prominent commentators and academics have recently accused Ivy League schools of breeding narcissistic leaders and executives who have been instrumental in fuelling the global financial crisis. The director of economic policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, Kevin Hassett, argues that though firms did a terrible job in assessing risks, it is precisely those in charge who exemplified narcissistic mentalities manifested primarily through their grandiose sense of entitlement and their lack of humility (Hassett 2009).
CEOS are seen who think because they are CEOs they can now eschew evidence for their perception, being aggressively wrong repeatedly and brooking no criticism or check on their ambition even if it would prevent large scale collapse. - Chris Bones, dean of Henley Business School, in addressing the crisis of confidence in business leadership, suggests that the crisis stems from the creation of a narcissistic cadre of senior executives who knew no right but their own perception, and who brooked no criticism or check on their ambition (Bones 2009).
Twenge and Keith Campbell present evidence that the financial crisis is in part a consequence of the narcissistic cultural epidemic from which the US is suffering. - s. Conger (2002) highlights the dangers and temptations where narcissistic leaders can lose touch with reality (for example, a strong sense of self-importance may blind them to divergent points of view or to whistle-blowers, thus leading to poor strategic and organizational decision-making as witnessed in the case of Enron and WorldCom) by promoting self-serving and grandiose aims. Twenge and Keith Campbell (2009), drawing from extensive empirical research and cultural analysis, suggest that the financial crisis is, in part, a consequence of the narcissistic cultural epidemic from which the United States is suffering.
Boastful, pretentious behavior combined with “only being understood by others”, unreasonable entitlement, easily exploiting others, clearly struggling with empathy, and serious envy and arrogance are seen on people with this type of personality. - Narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by an extravagant sense of selfimportance, a sense of superiority, self-centered and self-referential behavior, exaggeration of talents, boastful and pretentious behavior, grandiose fantasies of unlimited success, the belief that one is so special or unique that one can only be understood by equals, an unreasonable sense of entitlement, a yearning for attention and admiration, a willingness to exploit others, lack of empathy, envy and the belief that others envy him or her, and arrogant behavior (Ronningstam and Gunderson 1990, Cohen 2005)
Pathological narcissism has several key characteristics - Empirical studies have supported clinical observations that pathological narcissism characteristics can be expressed in temporary traits or in stable, enduring personality disorder manifested as: grandiosity (the most distinguishing and discriminating evidence-based criterion), vulnerable and fluctuating self-esteem, strong reactions to perceived challenges or threats to self-esteem, self-enhancing interpersonal behavior, self-serving interpersonal behavior, interpersonal aggression and control, fluctuating or impaired empathic ability, and exceptionally high or perfectionist ideals and standards (Ronningstam 2009)
Justification and rationalization are primarily seen on narcissists - Duchon and Drake (2009) observe that extreme narcissistic organizational cultures are excessively egocentric and exploitive; they will obsessively employ a sense of entitlement, self-aggrandizement, denial, and rationalizations to justify their behavior in order to protect the collective identity
NPD have particularly manifestations of narcissistic vulnerability, especially have difficulty in regulating their affect, their competitiveness, and are mainly seen externalizing blame. - Empirically, it appears that the core features of NPD are interpersonal vulnerability and underlying emotional distress manifested in the tendency to: fear rejection and abandonment; feel misunderstood, mistreated, or victimized; have extreme reactions to perceived slights or criticisms; feel unhappy, depressed or despondent; feel anxiety, anger and hostility; and have difficulty in regulating affect, interpersonal competitiveness, power struggles, and externalize blame (Russ et al. 2008).

2024.05.26 17:24 notfroggychair Some of my LPS I have fond memories with/are my favourites! (I added some of my LPS lore below!)
| •Ronnie and Amy (rabbits) are my favourites, mum found a listing on eBay of the exact some ones so I have them called “Little Ron” and “Little Aim” •The brown rabbit was one of Heather’s “minions” along with the black and white cat in CSI:LPS (out of series wise, b+w cat is best friends with Swirly) •Spike was best friends with Ben who’s the boyfriend of Ella (they are a power couple in my LPS universe) •The 2 dogs below were from a series from LPSLover called ASCI:LPS •Swirly was always one pet featured in my play, the little green bird next to him is also a fav •Chunk/Chunks is my mum’s favourite, he was know for being funny and eating a lot (mood) •Ron(?) and Alice are a couple as well and behind them is cupcake, who lives in a cupcake house (that’s what came with her) •Woodsen is a part of the CSI:LPS crew along with Bailey (and her iconic purple glasses). They rescue Crystal from a child kidnapper in the series, her sister is called Toffee (who I haven’t collected yet) •Do I even need to explain who Brooke is… •Cynthia and her security guard hamster. She was featured on Sophie Garrett’s CSI (crime solving idiots, different to the other CSI:LPS) series. I believe a g*n went off at a concert where she was the main singer, and yes I still have her crown somewhere and I believe I have the other band members. The series was particularly uploaded to YouTube and Vimeo. •?, Penny and Cloud are best friends. I got them in a set with a little house! Well if you’ve read this far, thanks for reading me info-dumping about my LPS universe! submitted by notfroggychair to LittlestPetShop [link] [comments] |
2024.05.26 15:44 A-roo-gallah Challenge: Can you come up with nature names I haven’t heard?
I’m a big fan of nature names as well as vintage names, I would really love to hear some names I have never even considered before. I don’t want names for the sake of them being weird, but rather names a child could proudly embody and love for their uniqueness rather than despise it. \ \ Feel free to read me if you like, just don’t suggest Reed to me. 😅 Not interested in the “unique” popular names of the moment or the ones that often get thrown out there, i.e. Rowan, Juniper, Cedar, Lake, June, August, any month, any astrology sign, Lyra, Orion, Daphodil, Islay, Willow, Teal, Silver, Goldie, Birch, Alder, Cloud, Blossom, Ocean, Tsunami, Kai, Koa, Shore, Linden, Heather, Wren, Dove, Aspen, River, Cove, Rosemary, Primrose, Oak, Oakley, Grove, Autumn, Ruby, Gemma, Marsh, Everett, Everest, Falcon, Aurora, Brooke, Blaze, Flora, Fleur, Acacia, Dawn, Fern, Briony, Camelia, Clementine, Cliff, Dahlia, Forest, Waters, Orson, Lynx, Holly, Astrid, Isla, Laurel, Lavender, Rose, Daisy, Harper, Meadow, Summit, Timber, Wesley, Maize, Pearl, Peony, Poppy, Sage, Fallon, Fletcher, Journey, Onyx, Raven, Sequoia, Sedona, Sahara, Yarrow, Zephyr, Wisteria, Zinnia, Moon, Kamari, Jupiter, Beaumont, Briar, Trench, Sunny, Pip, Daya, Clove, Topaz, Den, Ridge, Birdie— when I say I’ve heard most “out there” nature names, I mean it! Please pleasantly surprise me or at least make me laugh! 🙏 \ \ Names I like: Solstice, Coriander, Oleander, Sybil, Olympia, Embla My partner and I prefer gender neutral names but open to all for our future baby name list if they could have a gender neutral nickname.

2024.05.26 09:07 Mother_Salamander_56 ANTM youngest contestant?
I know there were a bunch of 18 year olds on the show but it’s kinda mind blowing some girls had just turned 18 and were on the show so quickly after. I know of Brooke c7, Simone c5, Erin c13 and so many more girls who had talked about high school and doing school work. Nicole was only 18 and 2 months before winning. I wonder if it was a weird change of environment to be in a damaging environment and to get a lot of negative feedback. Also was Erin c13 17 on the show? Her bday says Sep. 1991 on wiki and they filmed in May 2009 making her not 18 yet
