What happened to the .yu domain
područje (bivơa SFRJ).
.yu domain
On Tuesday, March 30, 2010, in accordance with the de- cision of the National Register of the Internet Domain Names of Serbia, .yu internet domain has stopped func- tioning. One of the last code related to the name of the former state thus became history.
The Museum of Yugoslav History, on this occasion, or- ganized a one-day event called the end of.yu. on the same day. The domain .yu was assigned to SFR Yugoslavia in 1989 and it continued to exist even 19 years after the breakup of the country. The administration of .yu do- main, from 1994 to 2005, was led by a volunteer group of professors from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Organizational Sciences in Belgrade, among which were: Mirjana Tasić, BoĆŸidar Radenković, PhD, Đorđe Paunović, PhD, Berislav Todorović and Nenad Krajnović, MA.
In early 2006, the National Register of Internet Domain Names of Serbia (RNIDS) was established and the insti- tution took over the administration of the national do- main of the Republic of Serbia.
The Museum of Yugoslavia on this occasion enriched its collections by an unusual acquisition - yu domain be- came the first virtual exhibit in our collections. This un- dertaking is based on the assumption that the physical presence of an item does not have to be a binding fac- tor to find an item in the museum collection. The virtual 'item' of the museum - domain .yu testifies to the tech- nical development, both general and the one connected to the particular area (former Yugoslavia).

2024.05.21 09:20 SecureHand5534 [Two Player Co-op] [Vs. game] Some kind of obscure weird game that Pewdiepie randomly played with one of his friends.

Platform(s): Likely a PC game, slight feeling it could possibly be a flash game, maybe not.
Genre: Competitive Party game of sorts, no real set gameplay. 2 players vs one another.
Estimated year of release: somewhere around the early 2000's? thinking 2008-2010. That is somewhere around when I saw the game being played by Pewdiepie back in the days.
Graphics/art style: The art was very bright and colorful, vibrant and trippy to an extent. Characters were colorful and neon, with a lot of crazy background patterns whilst the characters and assets were mostly detailed and cartoony.
Notable characters: Characters were just two buff muscular guys, weird looking and had unnatural skin colors. They likely had different hair styles to tell who was player 1 or player 2.
Notable gameplay mechanics: Game is a rather short VS. game, you and one opponent friend. First minigame was I guess a workout session with your buff character? After that ended, a voice went "What a workout~!!" and we cut to the second minigame, where your buff characters pose romantically and extend their tongues at each other, reaching for food rising up the screen. You had to eat fly-ridden sweets for points, and avoid vegetables because it made your character sick and cut points off. Afterwards, the final minigame had your characters heads suddenly flying off their bodies and rising to the sky, with a climactic singing in some?? language, then the heads start blasting rainbowish lasers from their mouths, and now you and your opponent had to try and maneuver the heads to destroy one another, and dubstep music played loudly. Whoever won the battle had their character's floating head quickly land over a detailed skull, and grin widely.
Other details: The one game I could compare (that was also played by Pewdiepie at the time) was "Muscle March" on the Wii, which was similar due to the characters being these muscular dudes. This game may have been seen in a one-off video? I can't find it on his channel even when I look up "weird/cute/kawaii" whatever game, may or may not be from a deleted video. This is the best info I can give.

2024.05.21 01:53 SAMUEL_118 MA Auto Insurance Help

I’m having a little bit of an issue right now with getting car insurance. So in march I sold my only car a 2010 Jetta, our insurance premium for that car with full coverage was around $1700 for me (licensed in mass for 3 years, 16 years in India) and my son, newly licensed (2021).
Now the problem, i’m trying to get auto insurance for another car I’m buying soon, A 2020 Subaru Forester. All of the quotes I’m getting are like $4-6k per year. I’ve talked to a few insurance agencies to get better rates but they keep on telling me that most insurance companies won’t write me a policy because I haven’t had insurance in 3 months.
But I don’t understand how that’s a problem, if I sold my car and didn’t have any other automobile, why would I keep my insurance? I canceled my policy a week after selling my car.
What can I do ? I’m not looking forward to paying $5k + for insurance, please advise me what to do.

2024.05.20 21:54 lawrencedun2002 You’re About To See More Of Action Legend John Cena

You’re About To See More Of Action Legend John Cena
Almost ever since the beginning of Cena’s pro wrestling career, the Massachusetts-born WWE star has been front and center on our screens and in the American psyche.
Yet, one thing that stands out the first time you speak to John Cena is his polite, easygoing nature and authenticity. And for all of his big muscles and championship belts, what’s also clear is that he’s just about as down-to-earth as any of us.
During our phone interview last week, Cena put it very simply: “Like everyone else, I’m happy and and I have moments of great joy, and I have moments when I’m sad and frustrated, and have moments of depression. I like to be able to be my whole self.”
Cena said the tough guy exterior helped raise him to the greatest heights of pro wrestling and that it also lends itself well to a career in movies, where, more often than not, he is playing one of the good guys.
“The Superman look or the hero in movies and TV often makes people think you’re primed for action,” Cena explained. “But on a normal day, I’m definitely not picking fights with people,” he joked.
In the early 2000s, Cena was tearing it up in the ring. Shortly after he won his first WWE Championship title in 2005, he began starring as a lead in action films such as The Marine (2006) and 12 Rounds (2009).
As the demand for Cena's star power grew, he gracefully transitioned into drama and comedy productions. His notable roles include Fred: The Movie (2010), Reunion (2011), and Sisters (2015) with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. He even took on the challenge of a mockumentary spoof on the sport of cycling, titled Tour De Pharmacy (2017), for HBO, further solidifying his success in film and as a Hollywood fan favorite.
But among Cena’s three dozen films, plenty of his more major roles and voiceovers come in the form of work in children’s movies and animated films. I asked him why the “tough guy” role common to pro wrestling works so well in family features.
“I think, over the years, action films and movies oriented more toward kids have gained popularity for moviegoers and families watching at home. So, I’ve been welcomed into people’s living rooms for a while now,” Cena said. He added that he likes doing comedies, especially, as they “let me be myself, let me be funny, and let me be who I am.”
Cena has also played himself on several occasions. He’s made appearances as John Cena on classics such as Parks And Recreation and Hannah Montana, plus Nickelodeon’s The Substitute and True Jackson, VP, not to mention the revival of Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader, as the show’s host.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved with WWE for over 23 years now, but it’s fun to take on other roles, and I’m grateful for the producers and directors who have given me the opportunities to do more things.”
Over the years, one of Cena’s favorite television gigs has been his appearances on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
“Anytime you get to do sketch comedy in front of a live audience, it’s amazing,” Cena said. He said that being on the long-running comedy sketch show can “be intimidating sometimes,” but says that it is both great fun to be involved and is an excellent challenge for anyone with a career on-camera.
“When you are working with the (SNL) cast,” Cena said of the players, “you are working with the absolute best, and they are always performing at a high level.”
Cena was the guest host of SNL on December 10, 2016, and also appeared as a cameo on March 14, 2009, and October 9, 2021, participating in sketches with Fey, Chris Rock, and other comedy legends.
“Each week I’ve been on, it has possibly the most tired I’ve ever been, and they are also the best and most fun weeks I’ve ever experienced,” Cena said, calling it “exhilarating.”
In addition to all that, Cena has also hosted ESPN’s Espy Awards, and a wide variety of reality TV and contest shows such as ABC’s Wipeout, which he helped produce.
Fit for the long haul
Just today MET-Rx announced a new multi-year partnership with Cena, the WWE legend and philanthropist. Cena said nutrition was “always a top concern even before he first got involved in bodybuilding” en route to his eventual career in the ring.
“Building muscle as a bodybuilder would lead me to be able to compete in pro wrestling,” Cena said. “Dedication to intense workouts was obviously key, but you have to fuel your body to take on that challenge.”
The 6-foot-1, 250-lb. Cena, known also for his 20-inch biceps, said he found solace and determination in the gym in his late teens. Eventually, he began educating himself about fitness and nutrition before transforming into a formidable athlete poised for a collegiate football career and, ultimately, WWE greatness.
While Cena’s physique and ties with sports make him a great fit for MET-Rx, the current number one sports nutrition brand, so does his success as an actor, one of the company’s marketing executives explained. Especially in the social media era.
“John Cena is a unique breed of celebrity,” said MET-Rx marketing and innovation director Bree Randall. “His appeal is universal and his fan base is incredibly enthusiastic and devoted, especially on TikTok,” Randall said.
Looking ahead, the company’s strategy is aimed at reaching customers on their mobile devices. She notes that Cena’s celebrity leading up to now makes him the perfect persona to connect with new audiences via social media. His sense of humor is an added bonus.
“Our MET-Rx campaign harnesses that attention and popularity, with content that is unexpected, attention-getting, and funny.”
Randall said MET-Rx’s new full campaign with Cena rolls out over the coming weeks. Yet as 21st-century trendy as TikTok may be, Randall said that their campaign with Cena summons a little bit of late 20th-century nostalgia.
“MET-Rx launched in the ‘90s as the original meal replacement brand in sports nutrition, so we have authentic roots in the fun and flashy gym culture of that era,” she said.
Randall added that 30 years later, “the ‘90s aesthetic is trending again, and this Tik-Tok-driven, over-the-top campaign approach” that Cena has been all-in on since the beginning. “It’s the perfect vehicle for his unique fusion of physicality, comedy, and genuine positivity, and we think it will resonate with fitness enthusiasts of every generation.”
Randall also added, “Our shared goal with John is to inspire and motivate people to challenge themselves, persevere, share and celebrate their wins, and achieve their own personal and fitness goals.”
But how, if at all, has John Cena—now 47 years old—changed his workout regimen since his days as a bodybuilder? Or as a full-time pro wrestler?
“I’m a little more focused on training for the long term,” he said. “Instead of the focus on being on ‘crushing it’ today like there’s no tomorrow, or lift the most I can, I focus on different things.”
But Cena doesn’t think that getting older means working out less or easing up by any stretch. While Cena doesn’t aim to bench press or squat a new maximum weight every day or set a new personal best, he does focus on keeping his energy level up along with his stamina.
“In my personal experience the slowdown comes with lack of energy,” Cena explained, over the phone while on-location in Eastern Europe, shooting a new film. “Certainly, there is a bell curve that occurs where age plays a role, but at my age. But if you are driven and have goals, you can tap into your own energy.”

2024.05.20 15:21 awesomecytoplasm found out bf lied about his age (said he’s 28M when he’s 38M) to me (22f) and never told me he was divorced with kids. How to move on from this?

At the end of March, I was at a concert when he came up to me and asked for my number. I asked for his age and he said 28. I’m 22 and 28 was fine. I found him attractive so I gave him my number. We texted and talked, got to know each other a bit, and had dates/hung out. We had sex mid-April and I went to hawaii for a week. It was my first time having sex and he knew I was a virgin. We didn’t talk much during my trip but he picked me up after I returned. Things went well and we became exclusive on May 4 (almost 3 weeks ago). We talked about lots of things; our families/parents/interests/career goals. He asked me when I want to get married and have kids and I said 27, when I finish med school. He said he could wait 4 years. I asked him what about him? He said he’s already 28 and when he finds someone good he’ll feel safe to start a family with her. I said “28 is young you’ll find someone” and he said “I already found you”. We’re both in NYC and he knows I’m starting medical school in St Louis this summer and even said we’d make it work for a long distance relationship. He would often crack jokes about me moving in with him.
He works for the MTA and has his associates degree but is going back for his bachelors in engineering. He sent me a screenshot of him accepting the offer and when I saw his full name, I decided to google him. I found out he was 38 (not 28) and saw a divorce settlement between him and another woman with the same last name in 2020. I told my cousin, who found her Facebook, which had photos of him and her and 2 daughters back in 2016. They got married 2010.
I confronted him on the phone last night & he didn’t deny anything. I asked when he was going to tell me and he said when the moment was right. He said he lied about his age because I wouldn’t like him if I knew he was 38 and admitted he was divorced, but didn’t talk about his kids (who are teens at this point). He also said he doesn’t tell women this stuff about him, only if they ask. I told him we couldn’t have a relationship anymore because I can’t trust him. However I still care about him and when we were together, it was fun. He would always do little things like open car doors for me, ask me if I’m hungry/get food, get food together, get me my favorite flowers, and I felt safe when I was with him. It was fun being physically intimate with him as well. I asked him if he wanted to be friends and he said yes. When we were exclusive he put a heart and ring emoji in his Instagram bio but has removed it. We’re still friends on Instagram. I asked him if he wants his hoodie back and he says that is his favorite hoodie and I said “ok let me know then” and that was it. Surprisingly, I’m more disappointed than hurt because I did like him a lot but idk if I loved him. He did tell me he loved me and didn’t want me to get with other guys before. I once saw my name was saved as my first initial and last name on his phone (maybe he was hiding something?) Still, I can’t stop thinking about all of this. I even thought about long distance and really wanted to make it work and fly back every other week to see him. Now I feel relief that I can prioritize med school. How do I move on/any advice whatsoever? please and thank you.
TL;DR: I (22f) found out my bf(38m) lied about his age and never told me he was divorced with kids until I looked him up.

GOD’S DOCTORS
In rural Virginia, religious and community groups are filling cavities, treating diabetes, and stepping into a health-care void.

MAY 18, 2024
Nearly 20 million people gained health-insurance coverage between 2010 and 2016 under the Affordable Care Act. But about half of insured adults worry about affording their monthly premiums, while roughly the same number worry about affording their deductibles. At least six states don’t include dental coverage in Medicaid, and 10 still refuse to expand Medicaid to low-income adults under the ACA. Many people with addiction never get treatment.
Religious groups have stepped in to offer help—food, community support, medical and dental care—to the desperate.
Over nine months last year, the photographer Matt Eich documented the efforts of five such organizations in his home state of Virginia. These groups operate out of trailers and formerly abandoned buildings; they are led by pastors, nuns, reverends and imams. In many cases, they are the most trusted members of their communities, and they fill care gaps others can’t or won’t. —Bryce Covert

The Health Wagon is the oldest mobile free clinic in the country. It was founded in 1980 by Sister Bernie Kenny, a Catholic nun and nurse practitioner, who first offered care out of a Volkswagen Beetle. Today it has four mobile units that operate out of RVs, plus two buildings that offer medical and dental care. It plans to soon open the first nonprofit pharmacy in the region.

The place has been hit hard by the opioid crisis, and residents suffer from high rates of cardiovascular disease, mental-health problems, diabetes, asthma, and cancer. “We’re the Lung Belt, we’re the Heart Belt, we’re the Kidney-Stone Belt,” Teresa Owens Tyson, who has been with the clinic since its early days and is now its CEO, told me. Most of the people the Health Wagon serves either don’t have insurance or have such high copays and deductibles that they can’t afford to use their policies. Tyson said she’s seen lines of people 1,600 deep waiting at the clinic at 6 a.m. Dental services are in particularly high demand: A 12-year-old recently came in whose teeth were so decayed, the child already needed dentures.

The Rec
Luray, Virginia
Audre King, Director of The REC in Luray, Virginia on Friday, June 16, 2023.
Reverend Audre King grew up in Luray. He went away to college, got married, and was living hours away in Northern Virginia when he says God told him in a dream to go back home and begin a ministry there.
He tried to buy a long-abandoned building on his childhood block, but no bank would give him a loan. Finally, the owner agreed to sell it to him for cheap if he used it to serve the community. Digging out all of the dirt and dead animals and hooking the place up to electricity and water took months, but in 2017, the Rec was up and running.
It now serves hundreds of hot meals in area where many people live in motels without kitchens. It also provides mental-health programming, kids’ activities, a computer lab, and fitness classes. “Our goal is that anything, for whatever reason, the town or county can’t or won’t be able to fund—a resource they won’t provide—we want to be that help,” King told me.
All of its services are provided almost entirely by volunteers; the only person who gets paid is a bus driver who transports kids from their schools and homes to the Rec and back. King doesn’t take a salary for either the Rec or at the Eternal Restoration Church of God in Christ, where he serves as minister; he works for a gas company.
When he preaches at the church, he’s teaching the Gospel, he told me; but at the Rec, he’s “living the Gospel.” He pointed to Matthew 25:35–40: “For I was hungry and you gave me food
I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me.”

CrossOver Healthcare Ministry
Richmond, Virginia
Marilyn Metzler, a registered nurse who has volunteered for 27 years, speaks with Father Markorieos Ava Mina at CrossOver Healthcare Ministry in Richmond, Virginia. June 1, 2023.
Last fiscal year, CrossOver treated more than 6,700 patients, over half of whom came from other countries as immigrants and refugees. Most undocumented immigrants can’t access Medicaid; those who can may still struggle to navigate the complex health-care system, especially if English isn’t their first language. The interdenominational group runs two free clinics offering primary care as well as cardiology and pulmonology, OB-GYN care, dental and vision care, behavioral-health services, pediatric care for children over 3, and a low-cost pharmacy. CrossOver relies on more than 400 volunteers to see patients, and still can’t open up enough appointments for everyone who comes seeking care: “We turn away about 30 to 35 people a week,” Julie Bilodeau, the group’s CEO, told me.

Adams Compassionate Healthcare Network
Chantilly, Virginia
About 10 years ago, Yahya Alvi applied for a job at the Adams Compassionate Healthcare Network, half an hour from Washington, D.C. The organization’s president told him that his dream was to open a free clinic. “That is my passion,” Alvi responded. He started by securing empty space at a nearby mosque and taking free equipment from a clinic that was giving it away. At the beginning, he employed only one doctor and himself, and the clinic was open just one day a week.
Today, it operates six days a week and has two paid nurse practitioners in addition to the two doctors. The clinic was founded by Muslims, but it accepts anyone without insurance or the money to pay for medical care, from anywhere in the country and practicing any religion. “Our religion says that all human beings are created by God almighty,” Alvi told me. “And all deserve equal treatment.”

Madam Russell United Methodist
Saltville, Virginia
Pastor Lisa Bryant at Madam Russell Memorial United Methodist Church in Saltville, Virginia. March 13, 2023.
One day in 2021, Steve Hunt was on the side of the road, trying to hitchhike to a grocery store about seven miles from his home in Saltville, Virginia. Hunt had lost his sight a few years earlier, after an infection in his leg went septic and he fell and knocked his retinas loose. Lisa Bryant saw him when she pulled up at a stop sign. She’s a pastor, and she had just finished a service at one church and had to be at another in an hour. She was in a hurry. But just the week before, she had preached about Jesus calling his followers to bring the blind and suffering to him. She gave Hunt a ride.
The interaction came at a crucial time for Hunt. “I was at bottom at that point,” he told me. His house was strewn with glass shards because he kept breaking things. He was struggling with addiction. “Everything was falling down around me, mentally and emotionally,” he said. “I was asking God to kill me that day she picked me up.”
Instead, Hunt started going to the new 12-step program Bryant had started at her main church, Madam Russell United Methodist. “They just kind of pulled around me, supported me,” he said of the congregation. He’s helped Bryant expand that program, the only one in a town where opioid use is rife but all the addiction-recovery programs are oversubscribed. Bryant has also set up community-service opportunities at her church for people convicted of drug offenses, and is working to secure transitional housing for people dealing with addiction.
Bryant doesn’t think the point of being a Christian is just to get to heaven after death, but to see the kingdom of heaven on Earth, too. She’s realized that “giving these people a new community, a healthy community, is one of the best things we can do for them,” she said. “We all need each other. That’s just how we’re created.”

A ?DUMB? comparison to other Short Squeezes. Gamestop or Volkswagen
FIRST OF ALL VERY IMPORTANT DETAIL - I'm just a smooth brain monkey. Take this post in any way you like.
GME has reached 300+ USD per share at the peak. So it was like 300x if we are taking bottom price 1 USD per share. Most of us know the rest of the story and many other details.
For those who haven't heard about ENORMOUS short squeeze of Volkswagen - take a look at the image I attached. It happened in October 2008, price per share hitting INSANE nearly 1000 USD per share! Taking +-26 USD per share of March 2005 it was like 36x of that price. AFAIK regular people absolutely had no freaking idea what was happening. What I want to say - WE ARE UNITED. WE OWN SHARES. WE DO NOT SELL THEM. WE CAN REACH VERY VERYYYY HIGH POINTS.
Anyone - please feel free to add any details about this VW short squeeze. HOLD STRONG

March to June: Rarely the Top - S&P 500 Historical Performance (1950-2023)
For those who are interested in market trends (no personal opinions here, up or down), here are some stats:
In the last 73 years, March rarely marked the peak, only once in 2000.
Anything's possible, but consider these odds when making directional decisions. While acknowledging overextended and generally bought conditions, remember that overbought can become even more overbought. Unlike an oversold condition, when the market panics, there will be interventions, but when it's overbought, no one will go against the market to upset anyone. That's why we only have a Fed put, but not a Feb call.
1 for March 2 for Feb 2 for April 2 for May 0 for June 3 for July 3 for Augus

2024.05.20 07:11 foxtrtters Bradley Hospital Experience

(tw: mentions of child abuse/DCYF involvement )
hey y'all, haven't posted to this sub before, but I wanted to reach out and ask about people's experience with a certain psych hospital in my home state.
Without getting into the gory details, I was admitted multiple times to Bradley Hospital's Children's Inpatient Unit (CIU) over the course of May 2010 - April 2013, with a stint in their Children's Residential And Family Treatment (CRAFT) program in March 2009 - June 2010. From what I can recall from my time in these hospitals, I was frequently prescribed a very heavy medication regiment (one of the early regiments being 900mg of Trileptal, 50mg of Abilify and almost 50mg of Ritalin a day before my parents tapered me off), as well as had a case where I was enduring severe abuse from a family member that was wrongly dismissed.
I'm a full adult now (22NB) and have seen the hospital pop up in headlines a couple times over the years with issues that have been longstanding since my admission(s) there in the late 2000s/early 2010s. I just wanted to know if anyone else had a particularly negative experience with their kid or themselves while admitted to Bradley Hospital. And hell, maybe we were ward mates together during the dates above and if so I'd like to get back in touch and hear how you're doing now. If this post is too much, I'll delete, no problem at all.

Directors at the Box Office: Clint Eastwood (Part 2)
https://preview.redd.it/va70nf0l3h1d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=021d936ee0a724ca428d8559f5823592404d1822

As Reddit doesn't allow posts to exceed 40,000 characters, Eastwood's edition had to be split into two parts because his whole career cannot be ignored. The first part was posted yesterday.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)š

"Beyond his silence, there is a past. Beyond her dreams, there is a feeling. Beyond hope, there is a memory. Beyond their journey, there is a love."
His 25th film. Based on stories from the 2000 collection Rope Burns: Stories from the Corner by F.X. Toole, it stars Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman. The film follows Margaret "Maggie" Fitzgerald, an underdog amateur boxer who is helped by an underappreciated boxing trainer to achieve her dream of becoming a professional.
Paul Haggis wrote the script on spec, and it took four years to sell it. The film was stuck in development hell for years before it was shot. Several studios rejected the project even when Eastwood signed on as actor and director. Even Warner Bros., Eastwood's longtime home base, would not agree to a $30 million budget. Eastwood persuaded Lakeshore Entertainment's Tom Rosenberg to put up half the budget (as well as handle foreign distribution), with Warner Bros. contributing the rest.
The film had an incredible run in limited release, breaking many records for Eastwood's career. It eventually earned a fantastic $216 million worldwide, becoming his highest grossing film ever. It received critical acclaim, and it was named as one of his greatest films. It won four Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (for Swank), and Best Supporting Actor (for Freeman). Eastwood became one of the very few directors to make two films to win both Best Picture and Best Director.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $100,492,203. ($166.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $216,763,646.

Flags of Our Fathers (2006)

"A single shot can end the war."
His 26th film. Based on the book written by James Bradley and Ron Powers, it stars Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, Adam Beach, John Benjamin Hickey, John Slattery, Paul Walker, Jamie Bell, Barry Pepper, Robert Patrick and Neal McDonough. The film follows the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima, the five Marines and one Navy corpsman who were involved in raising the flag on Iwo Jima, and the after effects of that event on their lives.
The film received positive reviews, but it bombed at the box office with just $65 million against its huge $90 million budget.
  • Budget: $90,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $33,602,376. ($52.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $65,900,249.

Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)

"The completion of the Iwo Jima saga."
His 27th film. Based on Picture Letters from Commander in Chief by Tadamichi Kuribayashi, it stars Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Ryƍ Kase and Shidƍ Nakamura. It's a companion film to Flags of Our Fathers, and portrays the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the Japanese soldiers.
In the process of reading about the Japanese perspective of the war for Flags of Our Fathers, in particular General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, Eastwood decided to film a companion piece with this film, which was shot entirely in Japanese. The film was shot back-to-back, starting filming just one month after Flags of Our Fathers wrapped filming.
Despite being seen as the least accessible of both films, this film was much more successful at the box office than the previous film (including a colossal $42 million in Japan alone). It also received critical acclaim, particularly for how it handed the depiction of good and evil from both sides. It received 4 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.
  • Budget: $19,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $13,756,082. ($21.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $68,673,228.

Changeling (2008)

"To find her son, she did what no one else dared."
His 28th film. It stars Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich, and is based on real-life events, specifically the 1928 Wineville Chicken Coop murders in Mira Loma, California. It follows a woman united with a boy who she realizes is not her missing son. When she tries to demonstrate that to the police and city authorities, she is vilified as delusional, labeled as an unfit mother and confined to a psychiatric ward.
The film earned $113 million worldwide, barely breaking even at the box office. The film received mixed reviews, but Jolie received praise for her performance. She was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress.
  • Budget: $55,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $35,739,802. ($52 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $113,398,237.

Gran Torino (2008)

"Ever come across somebody you shouldn't have messed with?"
His 29th film. It stars Eastwood, and follows Walt Kowalski, a recently widowed Korean War veteran alienated from his family and angry at the world, whose young neighbor, Thao Vang Lor, is pressured by his cousin into stealing Walt's prized Ford Torino for his initiation into a gang. Walt thwarts the theft and subsequently develops a relationship with the boy and his family.
The film received great reviews, as well as praise from the Hmong community. It ended up becoming a sleeper hit, and it earned $270 million worldwide, becoming his highest grossing film.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $148,095,302. ($215.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $269,958,228.

Invictus (2009)

"His people needed a leader. He gave them a champion."
His 30th film. It stars Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Following the aftermath of the apartheid, President Nelson Mandela decides to unite his people by supporting a rugby team in their bid to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
The film earned $122 million worldwide, barely breaking even. It received positive reviews, and Freeman and Damon received Oscar nominations for their performances.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $37,491,364. ($54.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $122,426,792.

Hereafter (2010)

"Touched by death. Changed by life."
His 31st film. It stars Matt Damon, CĂ©cile de France, Bryce Dallas Howard, Lyndsey Marshal, Jay Mohr and Thierry Neuvic. An American with a special connection to the afterlife, a woman with a near-death experience and a young English boy, who lost his loved ones, cross paths in an effort to find closure in their lives.
Despite mixed reviews, it managed to earn $107 million, turning a small profit.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $32,746,941. ($47 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $106,956,330.

J. Edgar (2011)

"The most powerful man in the world."
His 32nd film. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas, and Judi Dench, and follows the career of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, focusing on Hoover's life from the 1919 Palmer Raids onward.
The film received mixed reviews; while DiCaprio received praise, the technical aspects of the film were criticized. It earned $84 million, making it a box office success, but far below what DiCaprio usually makes at the box office.
  • Budget: $35,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $37,306,030. ($52 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $84,920,539.

Jersey Boys (2014)

"Everybody remembers it how they need to."
His 33rd film. Base on the 2004 jukebox musical, it stars John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda, Vincent Piazza and Christopher Walken, and tells the story of the musical group The Four Seasons.
It received mixed reviews, with praise for the musical numbers but criticism for the narrative and runtime, and failed at the box office.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $47,047,013. ($62.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $67,647,013.

American Sniper (2014)

"The most lethal sniper in U.S. history."
His 34th film. It is based on the memoir by Chris Kyle, Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice, and stars Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller. The film follows the life of Kyle, who became the deadliest marksman in U.S. military history with 255 kills from four tours in the Iraq War, 160 of which were officially confirmed by the Department of Defense. While Kyle was celebrated for his military successes, his tours of duty took a heavy toll on his personal and family life.
In 2012, Cooper and Warner Bros. bought the rights to the memoir. Cooper wanted Chris Pratt to star as Kyle, but WB told him they would only greenlight the film if he stars in it. After Kyle's murder in 2013, Steven Spielberg signed to direct. Spielberg had read Kyle's book, though he desired to have a more psychological conflict present in the screenplay so an "enemy sniper" character could serve as the insurgent sharpshooter who was trying to track down and kill Kyle. Spielberg's ideas contributed to the development of a lengthy screenplay approaching 160 pages. Due to Warner Bros.' budget constraints, Spielberg felt he could not bring his vision of the story to the screen. So Eastwood was brought in to direct.
The film attained a solid, but not extraordinary response from critics. It also attracted some controversy over its portrayal of both the Iraq War and Kyle himself.
The box office though?
To say that the film had a fantastic run would be selling it short.
It opened on Christmas Day in 4 theaters, and it earned a huge $633,456 ($158,364 PTA). But the following weekend, it actually increased despite playing at the same amount of theaters, adding $676,909. That translated to a $169,227 PTA, becoming the highest second weekend PTA in history for a live-action film. And on its third weekend, it earned $579,518 ($144,879 PTA), becoming the first film to have three weekends above $100,000 PTA. In the 22 days it played in just 4 theaters, it earned $3,424,778.
On its first wide weekend, the film shook the industry by opening with a colossal $89 million. That was almost as much as the other 2014 blockbusters, and given that the film didn't have 3D pricing, it's very likely it sold far more tickets than them. It broke the January opening weekend record by twice as much, and the second biggest for an R-rated title. With insane word of mouth ("A+" on CinemaScore), this film had the legs. In less than one week, it became Eastwood's highest grossing film domestically. On its second weekend, it dropped just 28% and made $64 million, which was the biggest second weekend for an R-rated film (a record it still maintains) and crossed $200 million domestically. And by March, the film overtook The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 ($334 million) as the highest grossing 2014 film in North America.
After an insane run in theaters, it closed with a gigantic $350 million domestically, which made it the second highest grossing R-rated film in North America. Overseas, it was also very strong, and it made a huge $547 million worldwide. It was easily Eastwood's highest grossing film, even adjusted for inflation. One of the greatest box office runs in recent memory. It received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Cooper, ultimately winning one for Best Sound Editing.
The biggest surprise of the 2010s? Perhaps. Cause let's face it, when 2014, did any of you had this as the top film of the year? Or even in the Top 20? Please.
  • Budget: $59,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $350,159,020. ($463.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $547,659,020.

Sully (2016)

"The untold story behind the miracle on the Hudson."
His 35th film. Based on the autobiography Highest Duty by Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles, it stars Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney, Anna Gunn, Autumn Reeser, Holt McCallany, and Jamey Sheridan. The film follows Sullenberger's 2009 emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, in which all 155 passengers and crew survived and the subsequent publicity and investigation.
The film received strong reviews, and earned over $240 million worldwide, becoming one of his highest grossing films.
  • Budget: $60,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $125,070,033. ($163.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $243,870,033.

The 15:17 to Paris (2018)

"The real heroes."
His 36th film. Based on the autobiography by Jeffrey E. Stern, Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler, and Alek Skarlatos, it stars Stone, Sadler, and Skarlatos as themselves and follows the trio through life leading up to and including their stopping of the 2015 Thalys train attack.
Despite choosing Kyle Gallner, Jeremie Harris and Alexander Ludwig as the leads, Eastwood decided to cast the heroes to play themselves, which was met with confusion as they lacked acting experience. And that was reflected on the final film; it received negative reviews for its acting, and it bombed at the box office.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $36,276,286. ($45.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $57,176,286.

The Mule (2018)

"Nobody runs forever."
His 37th film. Based on the 2014 The New York Times article The Sinaloa Cartel's 90-Year-Old Drug Mule by Sam Dolnick, it stars Eastwood, Bradley Cooper, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Peña, Dianne Wiest, and Andy García. Due to financial issues, horticulturist Earl Stone becomes a courier for a drug cartel. Slowly, he grows closer to his estranged family, but his illegal activities threaten much more than his life.
It received good reviews (although some questioned its story and tone), and earned over $173 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $103,804,407. ($129.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $174,804,407.

Richard Jewell (2019)

"The world will know his name and the truth."
His 38th film. The film stars Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, and Olivia Wilde. The film depicts the July 27 Centennial Olympic Park bombing and its aftermath, as security guard Richard Jewell finds a bomb during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, and alerts authorities to evacuate, only to later be wrongly accused of having placed the device himself.
The film received positive reviews, but several journalists criticized the critical portrayal of the reporter that first accused Jewell: Kathy Scruggs (specifically for trading sex for stories). The film marked another commercial failure for Eastwood.
  • Budget: $45,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $22,345,542. ($27.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $44,645,542.

Cry Macho (2021)

"A story of being lost and found."
His 39th film. Based on the novel by N. Richard Nash, it stars Eastwood and Dwight Yoakam. Set in 1979, it follows a former rodeo star hired to reunite a young boy in Mexico with his father in the United States.
Nash tried to get this film made all the way since 1970s, but no studio was willing to pick it up. He restructured his films as a novel, was successful and studios were now interested. There were a few candidates for the leading role; Robert Mitchum, Roy Scheider, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Eastwood himself. Arnie was willing to star in the film back in 2003, but put it on hold when he was elected Governor. He was set to star after leaving office, but the project was scrapped after his affair scandal was made known. In 2020, Eastwood signed to return.
The film received mixed reviews, particularly for its writing and acting. It was also a huge flop at the box office, and marked Eastwood's least attended film as leading man. David Zaslav criticized the studio's decision to finance the film. Warner executives allegedly said that although they knew the film was unlikely to turn a profit, they felt indebted to Eastwood for his decades-long relationship with the studio and his consistent ability to deliver films under budget and on time.
  • Budget: $33,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $10,310,734. ($11.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $16,510,734.

The Future

He recently wrapped post-production on his 40th film, Juror No. 2. It stars Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, Zoey Deutch, Leslie Bibb, Chris Messina, J. K. Simmons and Kiefer Sutherland, and follows a juror serving on a murder trial who realizes he may be at fault for the victim's death.

Across those 39 films, he has made $3,536,687,297 worldwide. That's $90,684,289 per film.

The Verdict

Insanely profitable.
Even the bombs do not taint this kind of reputation. Eastwood has made all these films under budget and never past its deadline. That's something that has to be treasured for studios, no wonder he's been staying with Warner Bros. since 1976. His ability to get films ready in short notice is impressive; Richard Jewell started filming in June and it was on theaters in December. One of the most impressive actors who transitioned into directors. You can tell that Sergio Leone and Don Siegel taught him well.
Now of course, his method of directing can also have its setbacks: he's often known for not asking for multiple takes and he skips rehearsals. So that means the performances of his actors aren't always the best they could've done. Which is why, despite making some masterpieces or fantastic films, he's also made a few films with weak technical aspects: poor lighting (J. Edgar), questionable logic (Cry Macho), obvious props (the fake baby in American Sniper), and some bad acting (Gran Torino and The 15:17 to Paris). At the same time, it's clear he can also get extraordinary performances through these methods; Gene Hackman, Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman won Oscars for starring in his films.
He also proved old age doesn't prevent you from continuing to work. He's turning 94 in a few weeks, and he's still directing films. Manoel de Oliveira directed films until he was 104, so perhaps we still have a few more years with Eastwood behind the camera.
P.S. Ever since I started this series, there's been suggestions that I should do "Actors at the Box Office" multiple times. While the idea is intriguing, that doesn't seem feasible for me. I'd have to categorize whether the actor is leading, supporting, original IP, adaptation, remakes, etc. Besides, with the continuing decline of star power, it's tough to decide what actor is truly moving the needle at the box office. That's why I'm making solely "Directors at the Box Office", because the director is responsible for the production. If the film succeeds, the director will get credit. And if the film flops, the director will be blamed. So this is the closest you'll get to "Actors at the Box Office".
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Robert Zemeckis. One of the biggest falls from grace.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. It had to be a controversial filmmaker. Well, we'll later talk about... Zack Snyder. Oh, BoxOffice chose fuego đŸ”„
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
May 20-26 Robert Zemeckis Can we get old Zemeckis back?
May 27-June 2 Richard Donner An influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
June 10-16 Zack Snyder RIP Inbox.
Who should be next after Snyder? That's up to you.

2024.05.19 22:59 Best-Weekend-512 [Tenant, US-OR]How is fair market value for rent determined?

Fair market value rent in Oregon.
Our dwelling was converted from a shop into an ADU around 2010/2011. No permits were filed and all of the conversions made were done illegally by a 40 year licensed contractor (co-owner) and his “helpers”. While they are now in the process of getting the necessary permits they are trying to make us pay above the fair market value for rent. In Oregon the law is pretty clear that a dwelling in our condition is below market value due to all of the problems. My question is does anyone know how to properly calculate the fair market value so we can continue to pay rent but not get screwed over?
Added context: I brought up the issue of habitability and paying above the fair market value back in February and the property management gave us a rent credit for February and March. They still haven’t fixed the major items and are now trying to impose full rent on us before the permit/inspection process has been completed.
Thank you for your help!

2024.05.19 20:45 FelicitySmoak_ Do you think there's a connection between Michael's death & his attorney Peter Lopez's "suicide"?

Do you think there's a connection between Michael's death & his attorney Peter Lopez's
On June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson dies, reportedly of a Propofol overdose
Three deaths of people connected to Michael happen within a six month period & I begin to think this was not a coincidence.
  • November 5, 2009 - the father of the first accuser Evan Chandler, commits suicide - single gunshot to the head
  • December 18, 2009, Bruce Ayers (Dr. Klein's research assistant and confidant of 3 years) was found dead on a sidewalk in Los Angeles. Ayers knew MJ
  • April 30, 2010, Peter Lopez (Michael Jackson's ex-lawyer) commits suicide - single gunshot to the head

NO ONE, not his mother nor his family and friends, saw any sign that Peter Lopez would commit suicide. Reports surfaced that said Lopez seemed slightly stressed, but not one sign that morning
Peter dropped the kids off at school at about 9:00 AM Friday. When he got home, he apparently went to the backyard garden and shot himself in the head
There were reports from people close to Peter that thought he seemed "stressed out" in the weeks leading up to his death ... but that he did not tell anyone -- including his family -- what was bothering him.
They did find a 1-page, handwritten note in which Peter expressed his love for his wife & kids and asked for forgiveness, but did not even hint at why Peter would end his life
In the very odd 911 call that his wife, actress Catherine Bach made, she states that there was a "terrible robbery" a few days earlier
I wonder what was stolen? Is the robbery connected?

Peter's History With Michael

Raymone Bain, Michael's former general manager, said she hired Peter Lopez in 2006 as Jackson's entertainment attorney when she was reorganizing his business affairs.
"I'd known Peter for 20 years," she said. When she was searching for a new legal team she said another of her clients, R&B singer Babyface, recommended Lopez.
"I can't think of a nicer individual," she said after his death. "He was a good guy. I'm just so shocked."
Lopez was conveniently/coincidentally hired to replace John Branca.
On August 7, 2006, Raymone Bain stated that:
"in what could be one of the biggest conspiracies in the entertainment industry, documents have been sent to Michael Jackson, and his representatives, which reveal a deliberate plan by some former attorneys as well as associates and advisors, to force Jackson into involuntary bankruptcy. The documents reveal that FORMER ATTORNEYS actively solicited other attorneys, vendors and creditors to 'join in a petition to place the client in involuntary bankruptcy.' ...Based on the timing of the events that have impacted his personal and professional life in recent years, he has long been suspicious that some of them that he entrusted to act on his behalf, and to advise him with respect to his personal and business affairs, may not have always acted in his best interests."
John Branca was fired by Michael Jackson in 2006. Although Branca stated that he left because Michael was surrounded by people who he did not care for or trust, the fact is that that Michael Jackson fired Branca and wrote him a letter demanding that he return all documents that pertained to him.

Michael's letter was dated in 2003. Did Jackson finally have the evidence against John Branca that he needed? And to be sure, Lopez was aware of all that was going on regarding Michael Jackson, whether it was Branca or other seedy characters that surrounded him.

The Final Months

Some people say Lopez wasn't involved with Michael in his final months. They are wrong. He was integral in the putting together of the This Is It residency, as confirmed by his wife & others
Darius Jordi Lassus, President and CEO of IMC Records said:
"in the past three years, Peter Lopez helped Michael Jackson launch the Life Water "Thrillicious" Super Bowl ad featuring Naomi Campbell, the release of "Thriller 25" (the 25th Anniversary edition of the biggest selling album in music history with new mixes featuring Wil.i.am, Kanye West, Akon and Fergie), "Thriller the Musical", the "This Is It" tour with AEG and an MJ inspired clothing line with Christian Audigier, you simply couldn't stop them, they were on fire."
On February 27, 2009, he is seen in Michael's entourage

On March 4, 2009, Lopez signed this "Confidential Estate Planning' document

In April of 2009, Peter Lopez was fired. The reason & by whom is unknown, though it is widely believed to have been by Tohme Tohme
It is said that he was fired to make room for John Branca to come back. Reportedly, on June 17th, eight days before he died, Michael signed a letter hiring Branca back as his lawyer. This letter has never been made public
Howard Weitzman, a lawyer for the estate, confirmed:
"In mid-June, Michael Jackson retained John Branca to represent him as general and entertainment counsel in his business and personal affairs."
We all know about Michael's fraudulent 2002 will that Branca has passed off as authentic but it is said that Lopez was in possession of the legitimate 1997 will

Yes, I know Keya Morgan is not completely trustworthy or a good person but I still don't think we should outright dismiss everything that he says
In this August 2009 interview with Lopez, he says that the Michael Jackson investigation was to be solved "very soon". He seems like a man that knows more than he was letting on
https://reddit.com/link/1cvv7k3/video/rwsjdbpnaf1d1/player
Bach told the police that in the days prior to Peter's "suicide", she was being stalked.
In 2012, when asked if she thought that maybe it was not suicide, or that something other than personal issues was behind his death she said
"I don't know"
In a 2013 interview with The Huffington Post, Catherine Bach states:
"He represented Michael Jackson, and you know how crazy that was. He's the man responsible for putting the "This Is It" tour together. He brought AEG into the picture which I'm sure now he wishes he didn't. So I think that he felt very responsible for what happened to Michael. And I think that that gave him a lot of grief"
This all seems a lot to just be coincidence
Was someone threatening Peter's family because of what he knew about Michael's business?
Peter was openly critical about the way the estate was handling MJ's business after his death. He said they (the estate) did not know what they were doing.
Did Peter sacrifice himself to save his family from threats?
Did he take himself out of the equation because he knew the info he was sitting on and other people knew that he knew?
Peter would likely have known or have been in possession of it, if there was another will
If Peter knew that people had conspired to kill Michael then he would also know that they would have no problem getting rid of him or his family too
Why does Branca seem to be involved in every facet of this?
