2024.05.21 12:59 ArnoldSwarzepussy I can't speak for everyone, but the special meter this past weekend in Trials felt PERFECT for 3s to me.

I'm not a huge fan of the crate system and it's taken a bit for Bungie to properly dial in the special meter system, but I think they really nailed it with this one. Special uptime was frequent enough that it felt impactful, but the quantities were low enough that it wasn't spammy and you needed to often think about whether or not it was worth using a shot. It made the pacing of the matches and primary to special ratio feel predictable and fun. I'd love to see this be the system they settle on, but what do you guys think?
And Bungie, please take the feedback here into account. I very much do NOT want to go full send on a crate system and there seems to be similar sentiment among the rest of the community. This iteration of the meter system is a huge improvement.
Edit: A quick addendum here: If we could use this meter system in comp until a more permanent solution is found, I would be grateful to have that implemented ASAP. The crate system in comp has killed all my interest in the mode, and that's coming from an Unbroken player who's grinded out Ascendant nearly every season since the rank rework. I miss having a good playlist for non-elimination 3s that I could jump into.

https://preview.redd.it/foc3h5n7gp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7a0e873e06c0aa28848b6fb9ad2c69802d3a4e5
As an avid hunter, I've always prioritized safety while trekking through the wilderness. When I first heard about the Muddy Safe-Line 30" Durable Nylon Outdoor Hunting & Tree Stand System, I knew it would revolutionize my outdoor experiences.
One day, I ventured into the dense forest, armed with nothing but my rifle and the Muddy Safe-Line System. As I climbed my tree stand, I felt a strong sense of security. This 30-inch long nylon rope, durable enough for its advertised 300-pound weight capacity, stretched before me. The Prusik knots felt reassuringly comfortable as they guided me up the tree. In the low light of the forest, the rope's visibility played a crucial role.
However, this wasn't all about safety; it also made my climbing experience seamless. The nylon rope was flexible enough to adjust to my movement, making climbing and descending a fluid affair. Yet, it maintained a solid grip, ensuring I never lost my footing.
In essence, the Muddy Safe-Line System is a vital tool for hunters seeking a balance between safety and ease of use. Its unique features ensure it's worth the investment for any hunter. Whether it's your first time climbing a tree stand or you're a seasoned pro, this durable nylon rope system is a game-changer, promising a safer and more enjoyable hunt.

🔗Safe and Easy Tree Stand Gear Rope 25ft

I recently gave the Realtree EZ Rope a shot, and let me tell you, it made my tree stand experience so much better. With its 25-foot length, hoisting my gear up was a piece of cake, thanks to the easy-to-handle plastic handle.
The EZ Rope even came with an extra-sturdy coated carabiner that securely locked onto my tree stand. The nylon braided rope, with its reflective threads, allowed me to locate my stand in the dark with ease.
But be careful - if you're not careful, the rope can get tangled up in a mess. All in all, the Realtree EZ Rope was a handy addition to my tree stand setup, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking to make their hunting life a bit easier.

🔗Stainless Steel Climbing Tree Stand Replacement Cable

https://preview.redd.it/qvsljgc8gp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1877b1129943d0474b44445b7743ca1ea7e3bbab
Sometimes, you need a reliable replacement cable for your climbing tree stand. That's when the Eder Stainless Steel Cable comes in handy. This durable cable is priced per foot, so you only order the exact length you need.
A 3/32" diameter ensures it's sturdy yet lightweight. I've had great experiences with this cable, but the drawback is that you have to calculate the number of feet you need before placing the order.

🔗Safe-Line Climbing Tree Stand Replacement Cables for Hunting

https://preview.redd.it/fj25qvn8gp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cb7834c7dbc70ff942876ba7cac9a0020e0a0955
I recently had the chance to try the Muddy Safe-Line 30" Durable Nylon Outdoor Hunting & Tree Stand System, and I must say, it has become my go-to for all my hunting tree stand adventures. The first thing that stood out was the safety aspect - knowing that I had a reliable system to climb up safely, no matter the condition, was a relief.
The product's durability was impressive too, as it withstood the wear and tear of climbing up and down trees numerous times. The nylon rope stretched to 30 inches, making it perfect for my needs and providing a smooth climbing experience.
However, it's not all smooth sailing. One downside I've noticed is that when the weather gets rainy, it can take some time to dry, which can be inconvenient. But overall, this Muddy Safe-Line system has made my hunting excursions much safer and more enjoyable.

🔗Tough, versatile 7/16 climbing rope for arborist and tree work

https://preview.redd.it/71wp2n29gp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8495a2cadbe0fd8f66549a6fb3438e249bffa3d
As an arborist, I've always been on the lookout for a reliable climbing rope that can withstand the harsh elements and resist chemical damage. The 7/16" Arborist-24 Climbing Rope was a game changer for me. It's not your standard rope – it's made specifically for professionals like me, who need to tackle complex tree work.
One of the most impressive features of this rope is its 24-strand construction. This doubles the strength, making it a reliable option for heavy-duty tree maintenance. The nylon core is both durable and flexible, ensuring a seamless climbing experience. And I love the double-ply braid design – it gives the rope an added level of toughness.
The polyester cover is what really sets this rope apart. Its chemical resistance is top-notch, meaning it'll stand up to all kinds of environmental hazards without a hitch. Plus, it's incredibly smooth to the touch, making it a pleasure to handle.
The 7/16" diameter is ideal for my line of work, providing a good balance of strength and control. The rope is also lightweight, which is a big plus when you're spending long hours in the tree canopy.
There are a couple of downsides to this rope, though. First, it needs more maintenance than some other ropes – the chemical resistant polyester cover can be a bit more high-maintenance. Also, the factory splicing eyes can be beneficial but they do lower the minimum breaking strength to 5,400 lbs, which might be a concern for some users.
All in all, the 7/16" Arborist-24 Climbing Rope is a fantastic choice for arborists and anyone else dealing with demanding tree work. Its toughness, smoothness, and ideal diameter make it a standout product in its category.

🔗Tough Winch Cable for Tree Stand Replacements

https://preview.redd.it/kkm16ke9gp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b712c79ca95da52534e8250f0004bf72c52deb90
The Badland 3/8 in. x 65 ft. Replacement Winch Cable with Hook is a sturdy and versatile aid for those needing to tackle tough tasks that require a winch. As someone who has personally put this cable to use, I can attest to its reliability and effectiveness.
The cable's heavy gauge steel construction and zinc plating make it a formidable force against rust, ensuring durability in even the harshest environments. Its aircraft grade braided wire design gives it the strength to handle some seriously heavy loads without fraying or snapping.
I appreciated how the cable comes equipped with a heavy-duty drop forged clevis hook, which makes it easy to attach to various objects needing to be pulled or lifted. The hook's robust build added an extra layer of confidence when tackling challenging jobs.
One of the most significant advantages of this product is its versatility. Users have reported using it for a wide range of tasks, from assisting with tree removal and stump pulling to towing large truck trailers out of tricky situations.
However, the cable's longer length might prove a bit unwieldy for some users who only require a shorter cable for their tasks. It could be helpful if there were options available in different lengths to cater to various needs.
In summary, the Badland 3/8 in. x 65 ft. Replacement Winch Cable with Hook is an excellent tool for those who need a long, heavy-duty winch cable with enough strength to tackle even the most challenging jobs. Despite its occasional limitations, it remains a top choice for those who require a dependable and versatile winch cable.

🔗Versatile 30ft Braided Steel Cable for Secure Locking

https://preview.redd.it/95n2cv0agp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b191dc2a60087ded7488ee789cb86768483becc
Imagine a cable that's not just flexible, but strong and durable enough to secure your precious gear. That's what you get with the Trimax Versa-Cable Trimaflex Braided Steel Cable.
Its unique weave design allows you to easily lock up items like bikes, tools, patio furniture, and more, while its interchangeable nature lets you customize its length to your needs. The cable effortlessly transitions from securing a bike rack to locking up your jet ski, making it the ultimate versatile solution for various scenarios.
It's the perfect addition to your security arsenal and a must-have for all your outdoor adventures.

🔗No-Burn Treestand Hoist Rope for Tree Stands Up to 25 Feet

https://preview.redd.it/7lag0pkagp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=672e9c9d72b587778b7fe8f84776cf9efce901cb
Recently, I had the opportunity to use the 30-06 No Burn Treestand Hoist Rope in my tree stand hunting setup. I was pleasantly surprised by how smoothly it worked, and the no-burn aspect made it incredibly safe to use.
The large carabiner clip made clipping and unclipping the rope simple, while the 4-inch tubing helped protect my fingers as I let the rope down. However, I did notice that the rope wasn't long enough for my 25-foot tree. Overall, this product stood out for its safety features and easy use, but it would be ideal if it came in a longer length too.

🔗30' Safety Line for Hunting Tree Stands

https://preview.redd.it/ljbaukxagp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df5a659c8c036cf3e097bc4e994c40cb251a81ab
When I first got my hands on the Summit Treestand SU83102 Safety Line, I could feel the quality in the materials. The 30-foot length allows for plenty of range when ascending and descending the tree. One of the standout features for me was the dual slide-and-grip prusik knots. They made it easy to adjust and move without needing more than one hand, making the entire process smooth and efficient.
However, I did notice that the safety line wasn't the most affordable option on the market. It's a bit of an investment, but for those who prioritize safety while hunting, it's well worth the price. With a weight capacity of 300 lbs, it's a reliable and secure choice for anyone looking to climb trees with ease. Overall, I'd recommend the Summit Treestand SU83102 Safety Line to anyone seeking a high-quality, dependable climbing safety line.

🔗Helo Hang On Tree Stand Replacement Cables

https://preview.redd.it/t751m4kbgp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b2c394ceaa6402d3a252cc543b53bfa56aca3eb1
I recall last season when I decided to invest in brand new climbing tree stand replacement cables for my Lone Wolf Alpha, after learning about the importance of safety. This product, Hang On Cables, turned out to be an excellent purchase that I couldn't be happier with. Not only did the cables fit perfectly into the stand, but they also came with all the necessary hardware for installation. The peace of mind that came with this purchase has made a significant difference in my hunting experience.
However, I did encounter one minor issue with the knob of the platform leveling assembly on one of my cables. It required some creativity with needle nose pliers to remove the nylon lock nut, but I managed to get it done. But aside from this small hurdle, the customer service and overall quality of the product have been above my expectations.
With Hang On Cables in place, I've been able to enjoy a safer and more secure hunt, knowing that I have the right protection to prevent any unwanted incidents.

🔗High-Strength Industrial Accessory Cord for Climbing and Industrial Applications

https://preview.redd.it/rqphes1cgp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a26936b9f9a3649cbc5df10cd10f6cd3d793ba0
I've been using this Cypher 300' Accessory Cord for climbing, and I must say, it has made my life so much easier. The vibrant green color not only looks great but also makes it easier for me to spot as I'm scaling the tree. The high-strength nylon construction of this cord is impressive, and it has handled the rigorous demands of my climbing adventures without any issues.
However, one thing I noticed was that the spool it comes in can sometimes be a bit tricky to close, but overall, I'm quite satisfied with my purchase.

🔗Secure Tree Stand Cable Lock Set for Protection

https://preview.redd.it/y4s0abmcgp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb14cac41605f9dd25a2d7f2b909590862fd16bf
I've been using HME Treestand Cable Locks to secure my hunting gear and tree stands every season. Out of the 3 pack of cable locks bundled together, they all have unique keys that match only the corresponding lock, making it convenient for storage. The 6-feet coiled cable is sturdy and self-contained, simplifying the process of securing around any tree. These cable locks are also suitable for securing other outdoor gear like kayaks, patio furniture, and even duck boats.
While these locks provide ample security and ease of use, I did notice some downsides. The keys aren't the same for all locks, which can be a minor inconvenience. Additionally, the cable's durability can be a concern because of potential weather-related rusting. Despite these minor drawbacks, the HME Treestand Cable Locks are a reliable and easy-to-use option for securing your hunting gear.

🔗Outdoor-Ready Tree Stand Security Cable

https://preview.redd.it/p5mvudxcgp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=337a50d92b02fecd206dae4e93eaa046cf373859
Since I've started using the Muddy Defender Security Cable, I can't help but feel more secure knowing my treestand is locked up tight. The 7' x 5/16" braided steel cable is incredibly versatile, adjusting from 6" to 7', which is perfect for my needs out in the woods. The pick and hook on the cable make it even more reliable, giving me peace of mind that my camera will remain secure.
The lock housing components are super resistant and designed to last outdoors, and I appreciate the scratch-resistant coating on the rubber-coated steel cable. I must say though, there have been a few times when I struggled a bit to lock the cable, and I wished it came with an easier-to-use lock. However, overall, I'm quite satisfied with the Muddy Defender Security Cable and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable security solution for their treestand.

I recently had the chance to use the Millennium Safe-Link 35 ft. Safety Line during my tree stand hunting adventure, and I must say it made all the difference.
This reliable piece of equipment provided me with that extra level of safety as I made my way up and down my stand. The prussic knot and carabiner ensured a smooth and controlled ascent and descent, giving me peace of mind throughout my hunting experience. One of the standout features for me was its sleek black color, which blended seamlessly with the surrounding environment.
Overall, the Millennium Safe-Link proved to be a reliable and essential addition to my tree stand hunting gear, and I highly recommend it to all fellow hunters seeking a safer and more enjoyable outdoor adventure.

Buyer's Guide

Climbing tree stand replacement cables are essential components for deer hunting and other activities that require a stable and secure tree stand. These cables replace the ropes and straps used to hoist and secure the tree stand to the tree, providing a safer and more efficient way to climb and set up your tree stand. When selecting climbing tree stand replacement cables, there are several important features to consider.

Material Type

https://preview.redd.it/9a1fu91fgp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3f7ab59a52a438b19f4746ed18622de084a2ead5
The material type plays a crucial role in the durability, strength, and resistance to wear and tear of climbing tree stand replacement cables. Common materials used in tree stand cables include nylon, polypropylene, and steel. Nylon and polypropylene are lightweight, flexible, and easy to handle, while steel provides additional strength and durability. Consider your needs, budget, and the expected use of the cables when choosing the material type.

Length

Ensure the replacement cables have the appropriate length to secure your tree stand safely and effectively. The length should be long enough to accommodate different tree diameters and heights, allowing for easy adjustment and ensuring a snug fit. Check the manufacturer's specifications for the recommended length of the cables before making a purchase.

Diameter

The diameter of the climbing tree stand replacement cables is another important factor to consider, as it determines the cable's strength and thickness. A thicker cable will generally be stronger and more durable than a thinner one. However, also consider the ease of use and comfort when handling the cables. Larger diameter cables may be more difficult to handle, but they provide better support and stability.

Weight Capacity

Ensure that the climbing tree stand replacement cables you choose have a weight capacity suitable for your needs. The weight capacity should not only account for your own weight but also consider the weight of the tree stand, hunting equipment, and any additional accessories. Choose cables with a higher weight capacity to ensure a safe and secure tree stand setup.

Brand Reputation and Customer Reviews

Research the brand reputation and customer reviews of the climbing tree stand replacement cables before making a purchase. Look for brands with a proven track record of producing high-quality, durable products that meet the needs of their customers. Positive customer reviews and testimonials can also provide valuable insights into the performance and reliability of the cables.
When choosing climbing tree stand replacement cables, consider factors such as material type, length, diameter, weight capacity, and brand reputation. A well-informed decision will ensure a safe, secure, and efficient tree stand setup for your hunting or outdoor activities. Always follow proper safety guidelines and maintain your cables to prolong their lifespan and ensure optimal performance.

2024.05.21 05:05 nafiznm93 Advice on Scorpios

I am a Taurus-Gemini cusp with Aquarius moon and Virgo rising and the guy I’m currently seeing is a Scorpio, with Libra moon and Sagittarius rising. We both at the beginning were in consensus that we should just stay as friends but we like each other, but neither of us were ready to be in a relationship.
But when we hung out it was so fluent and flowy and we both could feel the spark every time we would get drunk and talk to each other. Our personalities match so well even though we have very different sets of passions and interests. Because of that, we decided to try to be fwbs because I’m a demisexual and he’s someone that I felt connected with, so I decided to give it a try and it works.
But every time we’re hanging out and we’re talking, I can’t but feel closer and closer to him, which is making me fall for him but I’m trying so hard not to. The last time we got drunk, we ended up making out and he ended up saying he loves me, which I’m not reading into too much since we weren’t sober, but I’m taking it as a light sign that he does like me a bit more as well maybe.
I am a person who really likes understanding and commitment in a relationship and I really feel like he gets me. Even though I feel like it’s still too soon, but I do want to get to know him more and I want him to get to know me as well. I really do see a big potential in this, but if it’s one-sided there’s no point. And I’m afraid that if i do ask and he says he’s still not ready and wants to not be in a relationship with me, that I’d lose all feelings for him and I’ll have to move away. He shows typical scorpio traits, like the hot and cold thing, but whenever we meet, we’re very affectionate and touchy with each other and there’s no coldness in his demeanor at all. Are scorpios always like that? Should I just let things be and wait for him to feel how I feel?

2024.05.21 04:54 Rhelsr ITT: Reordering SAO

For the longest time, I've always held a gripe about the series kicking off with such huge stakes in Aincrad, and never quite matching them as it progressed further.
I just wanted to organize my thoughts by revising the timeline with some character and setting tweaks.
Enter Kirito, an aloof but brilliant teenage boy who has a slightly strained relationship with his family and frequently immerses himself in games. One day his only friend Klein, who he met online, convinces him to buy a VRMMO headset. Klein wants him to try a beta that he had two beta keys for. Kirito tries the Sword Art Online closed beta, which he is naturally talented at. He befriends several people including Asuna, Agil, Sachi, XeXeed, and finally Yuki, who is even more skilled than he is, and slowly learns how to open up to people. He and the others go on exciting adventures and even make names for themselves in raids. Unfortunately, he learns that Yuki is terminally ill and he must cope with her declining health. A renown developer named Akihiko hears about Yuki's condition, and appears in front of Yuki and Kirito. He asks if Yuki would like to have a special weapon that wasn't made available to beta players. Excited, Yuki agrees and Kirito observes as Akihiko uses system commands to give Yuki the weapon. Kirito and Asuna continue to comfort her and accommodate her last wishes as Yuki's illness continues to take its toll on her. Though her death weighs heavily on the group, they play on in Yuki's memory until the SAO beta ends. Having become more appreciative of life Kirito starts mending his relationship with his cousin Suguha. With the beta over, Kirito's group turns to Alfheim online, a mechanically and thematically similar VRMMO.
Rumors begin circulating that a player somehow has the ability to kill people IRL by shooting them in another VRMMO game called Gun Gale Online. Fond of GGO, XeXeed enters a tournament and encounters Death Gun, resulting in XeXeed's death IRL. The news of players mysteriously from a game reaches Kirito's group. Distraught by his friend's untimely demise, Kirito enters GGO to get answers before he really has a chance to play Alfheim with his friends. He befriends skilled player Sinon, who gives him a tour of GGO and they discuss the rumors of Death Gun. At a major player hub, Sinon states her intention to win an upcoming battle royale. Death Gun appears seemingly out of nowhere and challenges Sinon, eager to kill a well-known player. Sinon is shaken by the encounter but Kirito steels his resolve, declaring that he will help her. While about to sign up, Kirito realizes that anyone close enough can view personal information and deduces that Death Gun must have visited players' homes. Aware of Death Gun's self-imposed killing restriction, Kirito and Sinon keep each other alive until the end of the battle royale. Frustrated by his failure, Death Gun swears that Sinon will die regardless. Kirito urges Sinon to give him her address. Arriving just in time, Kirito manages to fend off Sinon's attacker, who she was able to identify as her classmate, Kyouji. The police arrive and Kyouji is taken into police custody. Kirito is satisfied that he was able to save Sinon and that XeXeed's killer will be brought to justice.
With the mystery solved, Kirito returns to his friends on Alfheim online and introduces Sinon to the group. To his surprise, Asuna seems to have worried about him much more than anyone else, having a hard time wondering if he died like XeXeed. Kirito promises that he's not going anywhere, and they become closer. Not long after they officially become a couple. Despite the return to normalcy, Kirito notices a change in Asuna's behavior. She reveals that her father is a major tech CEO for RECT Inc, the company that made the SAO beta and Alfheim possible. She then reluctantly reveals that her father wants her to marry Sugou, the chief of research who spear-headed Alfheim online at her father's company. Kirito reluctantly tells her that he shouldn't get in the way of such an arrangement. Bitter that he's giving in so easily, Asuna berates him and leaves when she's summoned by her father.
Asuna's father forbids her from escaping to Alfheim until she makes an effort to get to know Sugou. She then meets up with Sugou at the company. Knowing that Asuna enjoys playing VRMMOs with her friends, Sugou asks her to try out a prototype VRMMO headset. He claims that it boasts greater performance, and user interface than any similar device on the market. Asuna decides to try the headset to meet up with Kirito and apologize for being hard on him. Asuna's avatar loads up into Alfheim and she finds herself in a cage. Thinking something must be wrong, she attempts to log out, but is unable to. To her horror, Sugou appears and informs her that he rigged her headset to trap her consciousness in a scheme to marry her and take over her RECT Inc. Sugou feigns shock and falsely reports Asuna's predicament to her father as an accident and that forcefully removing it could kill her. After days of not seeing or hearing from Asuna, Kirito decides something is wrong and contacts Asuna's father for answers. He regretfully recounts how Asuna hasn't woken up after trying on the prototype. Kirito's group all immediately log onto Alfheim to search for Asuna. The group see a picture of familar girl mysteriously held captive high above the World Tree which many belive to be linked to a quest. Kirito's group band together and journey to the World Tree. Due to a major public event, they are impeded by the hostile Salamander faction.
Upon reaching the World Tree. Kirito is separated from the rest of his group and he alone ascends the world tree. At the top, he is met by Sugou. Sugou abuses his admin powers and torments Kirito, who is unable to use full abilities. Close to having his avatar killed, Kirito remembers Yuki and how Akihiko used system commands to give Yuki the special item. Desperate, Kirito takes a shot in the dark and successfully uses system commands to strip Sugou of his admin abilities. Without his admin status, Kirito easily slashes him up, destroying his avatar. Relieved, Kirito reunites with a grateful Asuna. He uses system commands once more to safely log her out. Kirito meets up with the group and informs everyone that Asuna is fine. Klein suggests that they meet in person to celebrate, and Agil invites everyone to his bar. Due to the terrible circumstances the group unanimously agree to avoid Alfheim for the time being. In its place they decide to move onto Sword Art Online, which will release soon. Overwhelmed, Kirito decides he needs a break, and withdraws like before.
If you got this far, thanks for reading. Might do the SAO finisher depending on feedback.

2024.05.21 02:40 essayan Long Haul Trucker - Stolen Wheel, Help with Hub!

Hey All,
I haven't toured in years (went cross country in 2009), but I ride my LHT around the city and when I camp. Returning from camping, my front wheel was yanked off of my Long Haul Trucker.
I've started compiling replacement parts. I found and ordered the original rim (NOS): -AlexRims Adventurer 26" 36H -Ordered my wheel (Shawabe Marathon Plus) and tube to match the rear.
***I'm out of my depth buying a hub. The old one was a Deore XT HBM760 in black with a quick release. I can't find a 36H online, and I'm pretty sure they're discontinued.
I don't know anything about flange, pitch diameter - so I'm not sure how to build out a new hub. Advice? I'm not a bike mechanic so please feel free to dumb it down!
I figure once I have the parts I can hit a shop to figure out the spoke size and build the wheel.
Thanks endlessly, good humans.
Update: Specs for old hub found HB-M760-L (black; Spoke Hole Circle 38mm; Center to Flange: Left/Right 35.8mm)
I'm assuming this means I can use any 36H hub with 38mm spoke hole circle, 35.8mm center to flange? Let me know if I'm misinterpreting at all!
Update again:
I gave in and bought this, and cancelled the rim order: https://365cycles.com/products/quality-wheels-deore-dh19-front-wheel-26-qr-x-100mm-rim-brake-black-clincher?variant=39465171976259¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&tw_source=google&tw_adid=&tw_campaign=17676901144&gad_source=4&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6auyBhDzARIsALIo6v9xeuwzJgxMuVU4wIeCinTrnvgnslQ_nWeZL72YUciLmAK0Hi_h3fUaAq5tEALw_wcB

2024.05.21 02:01 IareRubberDucky How I, a 2ft 5ish Gnome, terrified a bunch of Orcs.

Okay here's context. It's literally mine and several other's first ever DnD campaign. We've gone through a couple sessions, so in walks Fortix, a Gnome Rogue. I unofficially officially took up the mantle of "Resident Joke Character" because of my urge to be silly. How silly? I slapped a manticore's ass and it wasn't very happy about that.
Anyway, couple sessions later and now we're going to Butterskull Ranch to warn its owner, Big Al (if I remember correctly) about Orcs. After the Human Fighter in our group fails to knock the raw corn I was eating out of my hands, we notice the Orcs already got to the ranch, so we all engage in a stealthy manner by hiding in the corn stalks. I volunteer to scout the farm house and I do successfully identify all of the Orcs on the first floor by peering through the windows and being small enough to make chihuahuas seem threatening. Then I get to the Hatch to the Basement.
I decide to enter the basement and find the owner, Big Al himself, tied to a chair with a bag over his head. I untie his bindings and he requests a weapon. My thief-ass had been hoarding swords from deceased unfortunate so I hand him one of them. We then leave the Basement before an Orc overhears us and I get a brilliant (absolutely terrible) idea.
We head back to the Basement and I "tie up" Big Al just as an Orc opens the Hatch. I then retreat to the corner of the room and Ace the Stealth check because remember, Gnome Rogue. Orc walks down the stairs and talks with Big Al while I'm waiting for him to approach Al.
He never does and Orc starts ascending the stairs.
"Shit! Shit! Shit!" I panic and become Spy Tf2, getting a Nat 20 for the hit along with the Sneak Attack damage because this Orc doesn't know there's a guy the size of a child in the basement with him.
DM says he falls forward.
I say he should fall backwards because "it'd be cooler." I fail a Dex Saving Throw so I take damage from a 200+ pound Orc falling on top of me.
I then tell Big Al to come help me but DM says his hands are literally tied. Have to explain that I fake tied him up and Big Al.
DM says in his Orc voice "What's taking him so long?"
Big Al and I (mostly him) drag the body to a dark corner of the room. Human Fighter player blurts out "Hide under the body."
Yeah, I'm really doing this.
I become Luke Skywalker as two Orcs walk down the stairs. Orcs IMMEDIATELY spot the dead Orc I'm using as a blanket. Big Al gets smacked across the face into unconsciousness. One of the Orcs then leave and the other one stays to guard Big Al. I'm now playing Hitman: World of Assassination as I attempt to take out the Orcs one by one.
"I have to take him out before he stinks this place up." Orc takes the corpse by the arm, revealing a Garden Gnome.
First attack is a hit and I don't do enough damage, however, he wasn't expecting this short mf King! He's surprised and I get another turn. Second attack kills him but not before he managed to blurt out some words.
We doing this shit again! Get a Nat 20 to hide under the corpse! 3 Orcs now charge into the Basement as the rest of my group decides to assault the farm house.
Now that my group is properly fighting the Orcs, I have an awful idea. I'm just full of them, aren't I?
DM specifically positions the Orcs so I can sneak away, but I'm not about that life. I ain't leaving my homeboy BIG AL!!!! I'm now waiting to spring yet another plan into action as our Cleric straight up vaporizes an Orc with Inflict Wounds. So at this moment in time, our Human Fighter is having a boxing match with an Orc, I'm trapped in the basement snuggling up to a still warm body, and our Cleric just turned some poor guy into ash.
Now here comes my grand plan. I'm gonna make these Orcs believe the basement is haunted. I roll for Deception and score a 21. Entire party and DM sighs. DM says "What do you say?"
"OOOOOoooooooooooOOOOOOOooooooh! I'm a ghost! The ghost of Butterskull Ranch!" in a voice not too dissimilar to Paul Bearer from the WWE. The Orcs sprint out of the basement and I then move to untie and wake up Big Al.
With the power of Big Al and now the party all being combat, we win the encounter... mostly because Big Al hit two crits in a row. Dude was literally too angry to die as well. His arm was falling off and he still hit that crit.
This was hands down, the greatest moment of the entire campaign so far.

Just discovered I have two Grand Fire Trine, what does that mean exactly?
I was using the AstroMatrix app and discovered I have two grand fire trines. One with Leo Venus, Aries Saturn, Sagittarius Pluto and the other one with Mars in Leo instead of Venus. I saw interpretations for one but curious about two! I included my chart for reference . Thank you in advance!

2024.05.21 00:34 PyrocumulusLightning Transiting Neptune opposite Pluto - stories?

The Pluto in Virgo generation has been taking turns experiencing this aspect over the last several years, since 2011 when Neptune first entered Pisces. Now that Neptune is about to enter Aries, it will begin to oppose Pluto for those with Pluto in Libra.
Does the Pluto in Virgo cohort of Gen X have any Neptune opposite Pluto stories they'd like to share? What houses did this happen in for you? Any other natal planets involved?
How about the Pluto in Leo generation - how did Neptune in Aquarius manifest when it opposed your Pluto?
Neptune and Pluto both have to do with society-wide forces and things that catch great numbers of people up in their wake. They also have to do with the unconscious mind and the collective unconscious. So movements and fashions can appeal to great numbers of people at once, and they might not be fully conscious of the reason why.
Interestingly, those who've experienced transiting Neptune opposite natal Pluto have also experienced transiting Pluto conjunct Neptune. For the earliest Gen-Xers, this would have happened with Pluto was in Scorpio somewhere between 1983 and 1995 (among other things, the Cold War era under Reagan was a huge social influence).
For later Gen-Xers, this would have occurred when Pluto was in Sagittarius, somewhere between 1995 and 2009 (when the War on Terror became the focus of international tension). Both were times when paranoia revolved around an enemy that seemed to be both everywhere and nowhere, or at least that's how I remember it. The Sag transit also involved the proliferation of the Internet and the dotcom boom - basically the rise of the wealthy techie aristocracy, and the cumulative knowledge of the world available on your desktop.
Would anybody be able to compare the two transits, and how they played out in their own lives?
My transiting Pluto conjunct Neptune story is this. I have Neptune conjunct Jupiter in the 5th. I spent all my time online, being creative and having romantic drama. I moved to San Francisco with my partner who worked in tech, and who made a lot of money. I went to college full-time for one year of the transit, before the move. It was a strange time when I felt psychologically entangled with people I only met in person occasionally. It turned out later that there was a lot of deception involved, too.
Currently, Neptune is opposite my Pluto. My current job is manufacturing drugs, which is a complete departure from my former life. Neptune is also trine my Ascendant. Neptune obvious rules chemicals (in the laboratory sense) and pharmaceuticals, so that's weirdly apt!
Other than that these transits don't resemble each other much. How about you guys?

2024.05.20 23:56 MPZ1968 I Made A Deal With An Old Man In A Food Court Bathroom (Part 24)

“Um! Bob! You have a lovely daughter there, but… Um! She has a tail. Am I correct in what I’m thinking?”, I asked.
“Yes, Mr. Hard-Sell. You would be correct. Rebecca is an 867 year old Succubus. She is not only off-limits to you, because she is my daughter. But also because, the six of you, yes, including you Big Man, are an intricate part of my plan. I can’t have her seducing you, then killing you. Although the majority of you are already dead, and would come back to life, the remainder are not, and would not. Your untimely deaths would hinder my plan immensely. I do hope that you understand.“, Bob said, still standing
“I do!”, “Yup!, “You know it”, “Absolutely!”, “Sure do!”, “I don’t wanna die!”, we all said in response.
“Good!”, Bob stated.
Rebecca then came back into the room.
“Edgar said he just finished his checklists, and that we will be taxiing to the runway soon, Daddy!”, Rebecca said, not so seductively.
“Very well, Dear! Take your seat!”, Bob said.
Rebecca then took a seat in the chair next to the TV, close to Bob, directly in front of us, and began rubbing the tip of her tail playfully.
She then winked at us, and licked her lips.
“REBECCA!”, Bob shouted, and looked at her hard faced once again.
Rebecca dropped her tail, and just sat there, pouting.
We then taxied to the runway, and stopped.
Shortly after, we heard the intercom make a popping sound, then Edgar’s nasally voice was heard saying, “Good Evening, Passengers, and Welcome to Hellfire Airlines, Flight 666. Nah!, I’m just kidding, I don’t even think we have a number.”
He then laughed.
“The time is 5:08 PM, Human time. The weather conditions are clear and sunny. I always wanted to say that.”, he continued, then laughed again.
He finished by saying, “But seriously, Guys. We’re taking off now. So, wish me luck!”
There was a brief moment of silence, then we heard Edgar say over the intercom again, “Okay! Fingers crossed, Here goes. Um!… Release brake. Wow!… Ok!… Advance throttle! Woah! We’re movin’ now!”
The plane then started moving forward fast, shaking and bouncing as it went, and so was Rebecca.
We all just stared at her.
“Boys! Remember what I said!” Bob told us.
We all closed our eyes, turned our heads, or covered our faces, in an attempt to look away, as Edgar continued on the intercom.
“Um! Ok! Check speed! Faster! Faster! Got it… Lock it… Yeah Baby!… Pull the stick thing… Man, this thing is heavy! Um! Oh shit!… We’re fly… Did I leave this on?… Oh, Fuck!”
We then heard the popping sound of the intercom turning off.
Bob just covered his face, and shook his head, as the plane ascended into the sky.
Rebecca was now smiling.
We, however, were completely scared shitless.
When the plane leveled off, we all began to check and see if we pissed or shit ourselves.
Luckily, no one did. Tony was sweating profusely though.
“Are you alright, Man?”, I asked Tony.
“Yeah, I think so, Mike! Thanks for asking!”, Tony said.
“No problem, Dude!”, I replied.
We all just sat there, for a little while, not saying a word, trying to calm our nerves.
The plane then suddenly began to shake violently.
Tony screamed.
“We’re gonna die, Dude!”, Stephen yelled.
“I’m too young to die!”, Derek said.
“Shut up, Dude! We’re already dead.”, Ricky replied.
“Oh, yeah!”, Stephen responded.
“Right!”, Derek said.
“Boys! Boys! Its just a little turbulence. I told you, Edgar has it all under control. However, you boys look all stressed out. Would you like a little stress relief?
“What kind of Stress Relief?”, Tony asked.
“Oh, you’ll see! Rebecca, why don’t you go keep Edgar company for a while! I’ll let you know when to come back!”
Rebecca smiled wider, and her eyes brightened.
“Okay!”, she said excitedly, and hopped with a bounce, out of her seat.
“Not that kind of company! The poor boy will kill us all. Well, you know what I mean!”, Bob said.
“Okay, Daddy! I’ll just talk to him.” She said saddened, and slowly walked back through the curtain, her tail dragging on the floor.
As she did, we heard her say, “I’m never getting laid with you around!”
We all kinda laughed at that one, except Bob of course.
He shook it off, and said, “Now Tony! Remember what your friend here was doing with his hands earlier”, and pointed at Corey.
“Yeah!”, Tony answered, and moved his hands curvingly, just like Corey did.
“That’s Right, Big Man!… Girls!” Bob said, and snapped his fingers.
Suddenly, the door between the pinball machines opened up, and out walked six seductively dressed women, in various colored, practically see through, lacey lingerie, all well endowed.
2 Blondes, 2 Redheads, 1 Brunette, and a black haired girl.
“They must have been waiting in our rooms when Bob gave us a tour of the plane. We didn’t see them, because we didn’t go in the rooms then.”, I thought.
Anyway, a different girl went to each one of us, and began flirting, and rubbing shoulders, amongst other things.
Derek and Corey jumped at the opportunity, and began making out with their girls almost immediately, and soon ventured to their rooms.
Stephen and Ricky “Hung Out” with their girls for a while, like a little date, before doing the same.
Tony was just laughing, and having the time of his life, as his girl rubbed the top of his head… The one on his shoulders, you sick freaks.
When “my” girl approached me, I greeted her with a handshake, and told her I wasn’t interested, but told her Tony would be ecstatic having the “attention” of two girls.
She smiled, and went to join in the fun with Tony.
Both girls actually had to lead Tony to his room.
I just sat there.
“Mr. Hard-Sell?”, Bob inquired, “Not interested! Are you one of THOSE kind of guys?”, he asked.
“No, Bob!”, I said, “I’m just picky about my girls. Some say I have a unique preference. All those girls are incredibly beautiful, they’re just not my type.”
“What is your type, Mr. Hard-Sell?”, Bob asked.
I tried to think of the best way to respectfully describe them.
After a few seconds, I said, “You can laugh if you want to, everyone does, but I don’t give a shit. I like Big Girls, Bob! Thick and Fluffy! That’s my type!”
Bob just looked at me, “Very interesting!”, he said, “Let me see what I can do.”
He then snapped his fingers, and disappeared into a cloud of gray smoke.
Moments later, he returned in another cloud of smoke.
“He must really like gray smoke!”, I thought.
“Ta-da!”, he said announcing himself, “Wait until you see what I have got for you, Mr. Hard-Sell! I believe she will most definitely be to your liking.”
He snapped his fingers once again, and through the door, walked the most incredibly beautiful, full figured, thick and fluffy woman that I had ever seen. Well, besides Susan. She will always be my number one, but this girl was a close second.
She too wore the same see through lacey lingerie, but hers was white.
My eyes almost popped right out of my head.
We also “Hung Out” for a while, playing pinball, drinking coffee, and talking, before agreeing to head to my room, leaving Bob alone by himself.
She’s a really nice girl. Her name is Donna by the way.
I joined the “Mile High Club” that day. Hell, all of us did, including the girls, well, except Bob. But I’m pretty sure he’s been a member for a very long time.
Anyway, after we all got to “know our girls a little better”, one by one we all made our way back to the “Hang Out” section, I assume, as Derek, Corey, Ricky, and Stephen were all there, with their girls, when I arrived with mine.
Everyone turned to look at Donna and her full figured self, as we walked through the door.
“Bust that shell, Man!”, Derek said, smiling.
“You do you, Dude!”, Stephen said, giving me a thumbs up.
“You go, Girl!”, Ricky’s girl said.
That was the first time in my life, that no one laughed or made fun of my preference in women, or the woman herself.
I smiled, and then kissed Donna, who in turn kissed me back
Anyway, Derek, Corey and their girls were getting toasted on the couch.
Stephen was playing a game of pinball with his girl.
Ricky and his girl were playing Asteroids on the TV.
Tony was the last to arrive, with both of his girls, his arms around each one of their waists, and a huge smile plastered across his face.
“Thanks, Mike!”, he said, “That was fun!”
“I bet it was, Dude! You’re Welcome!”, I replied.
He then went to the sandwich station, grabbed some ham, and began “Lady and The Tramping” it with both of the girls.
“Boys! Boys!”, Bob said loudly, “Come here! Eyes forward! Pay attention!”
We all got up and gathered around Bob, including Tony.
The girls all gathered on one couch, and began talking about anything and everything, giggling like women do.
No offense!!
Bob then started to speak.
“Now, before you go thinking that you “did the nasty” with a demon or some other product of Hell, let me assure you boys, that that could not be further from the truth.
I would not waste my demons on such frivolous things such as this.
Also. I can not manifest a human female, even if I tried, and I have. It did not work out well for me.
You see, The human male was created in the image of the “Man upstairs”, he said.
He then pointed toward the ceiling of the plane, meaning GOD.
He then continued, “And the human female was created FROM the human male, therefore they are both creations of “HIS”.
Now, many believe, that I have greater power than “HIM”, but they are wrong. I have great power, yes, but nothing that could compare to that of “HIM”.
I assure you boys, that these lovely ladies here are 100% human.
They are fans of the band, I believe you humans call them, Groupies, or something equally as stupid as that.
You see, when your album was released, after your video, oh yes, there’s a video.
We videotaped each part of your recording session, unbeknownst to you, and after mixing your audio tracks and instrumental tracks together to create a song, we mixed the tapes together, timing it perfectly, to match the audio track we made, thus creating the video.
I think it had something to do with dawn and being dark”, he said.
“Before The Blackest Dark Of Dawn!”, I said.
“Yes, that’s it! It is very popular on something called MTV.
Anyway, like I said, when your album was released, I went around to various music shops, to see who was buying it.
I put on another non-threatening outfit, and approached only the most beautiful of women, offering to let them “meet” the band, and Tony.
I only had to ask 8 lovely ladies.
The first 2 agreed, the third had a boyfriend, the 4th and 5th agreed, the 6th “batted for the same team”, her words not mine, the 7th and 8th both agreed as well.
None of the girls, except your girl, Mr. Hard-Sell, your second girl, Donna, I believe, not your first, and your girl, Tony, really cared who they “went with”, as long as they “went with” someone in the band.
Your two girls actually wanted to “meet” you. He then pointed to Tony and myself.
The redhead over there…”, he said.
We all been turned to look at the redhead on the left side of the couch.
“No, the other one…”
We all been turned to look at the redhead on the right side of the couch.
“Yes, that one!”
She actually likes large men, so that worked out well.
I arranged for all six ladies to wait in your rooms until called, which they did.
I was unaware of your “preference”, Mr. Hard-Sell. So I quickly found someone to your liking. Believe it or not, in your Daddy’s store.”
He then pointed to Ricky.
“He’s doing fine by the way, business is on the rise, since he started promoting his son’s album.”
Ricky then smiled.
“Very Good Choice, Bob!”, I said, as I turned and blew a kiss to Donna, and waved.
She “caught” the kiss, and “put” it on her cheek, smiling.
Stephen gave a thumbs up to Bob, then went back to his pinball game.
Derek and Corey went back to getting toasted.
I made a cup of coffee, Tony made a sandwich, and Ricky grabbed a beer.
The girls stayed talking on the couch.
Bob then yelled, through the curtain, for Rebecca to come back.
She came bouncing back through the curtain, and immediately stopped.
She looked around at all the girls sitting on the couch and screamed, obviously jealous, and Hell hath no fury, like a jealous succubus.
“REBECCA! STOP!”, Bob yelled.
She didn’t stop… she just kept screaming.
I’m not even sure you could call it a scream. Her mouth was open, but no sound was coming out.
What could be heard though, was every window in the plane blowing out, and the eardrum popping sound of the plane depressurizing.
An extremely forceful wind began blowing anything that wasn’t nailed down, all around the inside of the plane, and eventually causing it to be sucked out of the window openings.
All the girls screamed. Tony screamed!, and even Bob screamed.
We all began death gripping anything that we could to keep from flying out of the windows ourselves, the girls included.
A loud explosion was heard, as both right engines exploded, I assume from sucking in all the debris that was flying out of the broken windows, sending two huge fireballs shooting into the sky, as mounds of black smoke poured out of each blown engine.
Everybody screamed that time, covering their mouths soon after.
Somehow, over the sound of the wind, the coughing, and the flames, we heard Edgar over the intercom once again, “Um, Sir! We have a problem! I’ve lost control! We’re going down!
Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!”
We then felt the plane going into a hard descend… practically nose-diving, spiraling downward to the right, very fast.
We all lost our grips on whatever we were holding, and were slammed hard against the pinball machines and the back wall, the force of the descent keeping us pinned there.
4 of the girls, Tony, and Stephen, were all knocked unconscious from hitting the wall head first. Corey, Ricky and Derek all had blood pouring down their faces from slamming head first into the back of a pinball machine, but they were still conscious.
Donna and I, as well as Rebecca, and the remaining 2 girls, hit the wall hard, but appeared to be uninjured, so did Bob.
“BOB!… I THINK THIS QUALIFIES AS A COMPLICATION… DO SOMETHING!”, I yelled.
After a few seconds, I yelled again, “BOB! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? HELP!”
It was at that very moment that I realized, if I didn’t want to die, I could no longer keep my “Gift” a secret.
I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and softly whispered, “I want this plane to be whole again.”

2024.05.20 20:34 True_Slip9879 Transcript of audio 05/18/2024 Warming Shelter Proposal Public Meeting.

I want to introduce you to several of our board members that are here. So if you guys work your way up front. So Deacon Mark Lagreeve works at St. Francis as Deacon and is on the board of the Haven and was the founder of the Haven. So he has a little bit of an experience with this. Janky is current director of the Hope House and has a long history in Manitowoc, serving on common council at one time, business owner, and again, brings a lot of experience to what's needed here. So welcome. Brittany Punches is a teacher in town. She recently completed her master of social work degree, is a parent, and has been a Starworth volunteer at the shelter for the last two seasons, where she actually did part of her. Did they call them clinicals? Is that the right word, clinicals?
For her master of social work degree there. And so we're happy to have her joining the board. And then we also have Michael Etheridge, the director of the haven. He can't be here today, but is also on the board. And Amy Sonoman, who is the president of the board of Hope House and works at United one credit union. So these are the six and myself, six people from those three agencies that have initially created the board of the neighborhood. Now, we have a lot of work. Like, we don't even really have bylaws yet, but you know that we fill out the paperwork, but we have that. And then, of course, that will expand. But that's the core group.
And again, that's a sign of seeing that these main agencies that are addressing homelessness in our community are working together to make this a positive experience for the whole community. So at this moment, I want to say thank you to all of you for coming out. I don't know what motivated you to come out today. It might have been because you think this is the greatest thing that could ever happen. It could be that you've been a constant volunteer and supporter. It may have been because you have certain questions, but I'm glad that you're here because if we don't come together as a community, if we don't share our questions, we don't raise these things, we can never move. We can never move forward as a community.
So even if you have concerns or questions, that's what we want to make sure this is a community project and that we're able to address those concerns. So I'm going to open it up. If any of the three of you want to say anything, just something really short.
The reason we're doing this is, you know, there's market forces with the rental market, vacation rental properties, people buying second homes. A lot of snowbirds buying property here because they want to win. They want a winter here or summer here. So those are market forces. There are a lot of the new properties, condos that are being built. They're being bought by people that are wintering and have moved away to Florida and now are buying properties here to spend their summers here. So that's where some. Some of these things are happening and these are the market forces. So that's beyond our control. You know, landlords are. We love them. They serve a purpose in our community. But there's limited supply of properties, so the prices are going through the roof. I know of $800. What were $800?
Apartments that are now $1400, apartments that just changed last month, $500 or $600. So that's beyond our control. So we, as nonprofits, we have to do something of response much beyond our control. And that's to figure out how can we get into becoming landlords. How can we end up buying properties, converting them, and serving an unmet need of, you know, the people, the working class, the people that are trying to work through and find their way to home ownership or to find their way to restore their records. They need a starting place. And without us doing this, they don't have a starting place. And these are our community members. These are our family members. There are people that. That we love, that we want to care for. So that's why. What's the motivation to doing this?
And there are some generous donors in the community that see it, and they're asking, how are we going to resolve this? And they've been really asking, how do we collaborate and how do we do something to respond? And it's not just a Manitowoc issue, it's a national issue. So this is just what we're doing. Starting to do here at Manitowoc. 25 apartments here is going to make a little dent. The number of affordable apartments we determine are needed in the community is 150. There's 150. There's a lack of 150 apartments in this community. And that's what's driving supply and demand. That's what's driving up the prices of apartments. I lost my train of thought. There was something else I was going to say about. It'll come back to me. Jan, do you want to say anything?
Okay.
While you're thinking at Hope House, our priority has always been the family. So we have concentrated on, you know, single parents, couples with children, and we've not been able to really help the single female and the couples without children. So this gives us an opportunity to expand our facility that we currently have to help the single and the couple, along with our families, of course, and move them out of our current 90 day program into transitional housing, because those two groups really need help. It will not necessarily be big enough for our families, because our average family is, what, five, six people, which, you know, could be a single mom and five kids. Single mom, four kids, a couple. And these apartments may not be big enough for them. So that will help them through other means.
But we need to get the single female and the couples off the street, and this will help.
Waiting list. That's what they came up. So, Janine, what's the waiting list at the haven now? 100, 150, probably pretty close.
Single men.
Just single men. 100, 150 men get into the haven, and we can't accept them. We have to say, sorry, we gotta wait till someone moves out, but they don't have a place to move out to. What's the waiting list saying? Hope house.
It's over 100, and it's mostly single female and couples because we prioritize the family first.
So it's so hard saying no to these people. We just can't. It breaks our hearts. We have to do something, and this is the something.
So the neighborhood will put a dent in that. And obviously, it's not going to solve everything, but we start somewhere. Brittany, do you want to add anything?
I think it's just really important to press that this is a step in that transition and that it's going to move that process along. When we get our friends off the street, our guests, our neighbors that are those members of our community that, like pastor said, are exactly like us. We have had friends that have had months saved. They have an operation, and they get sick. We have had city bus drivers, we have had teachers. We have had individuals from every walks of life that something happened, and whatever it was their fault or not, oftentimes not. They need just a step up. And this is just one way to help them get back into the community and make our community stronger.
So do we have any questions? I mean, there's probably thousands of questions, but, yeah.
Who's going to do the video tour of the facilities? You've got meetings coming up. You need explanation. Video tour.
Okay, so we need to add to our list to have some folks make some. Some video walkthroughs of the facility. So people who have never seen them. We can get a kind of a look up. This is what the haven looks like. This is what the hope house looks like currently, as well as how this looks and what it can become.
So you mean video tours of Hope House, the haven and this building?
Yeah.
Okay. Yeah, I know that there's a property listing for this that has pictures of it. We have figured out how to share that so we can share that. I know there's a property listing for it that has pictures, but yes, a video would be a great idea to share them before. Pictures.
Yeah, share the pictures and then share the vision.
This is what it is, but this.
Is what it could be.
CONT. RECORDING TRANSCRIPT:
I want to know what you're going to do. They have no place to go during the day. I don't want them sitting on my mom's porch. I don't, you know, I know. Worked at places where I work at a convenience store where we've had them hang out at a convenience store. And I know a couple that, hey, they went and got a home and, you know, in another city, and they came back and what they wanted to do was be at that convenience store. So what plans you guys have for the neighborhood to keep everybody safe for the ones that not live here, but the warm.
Thank you. That's a great question. I'm sure a lot of people share that concern as well. So the first way I'll answer that is that. Oh, I'm. Thank you. Just what. Can you repeat the question? We had a hard time period. Yes, that's what. Yeah, that's what I was about to do. So the question was, is, what can we do to help those leaving the shelter each morning, to not just congregate on people's porches and such around the neighborhood, right around here? Is that a fair? Okay, so I'll answer that two ways. The first way is that, you know, the current warming shelter is less than half a mile from here, so it's already in this neighborhood. And so we have not had. Any of the neighbors have had concerns about that.
Most of the guests, when they leave, typically, at least at any given time, I'd say a quarter of the guests are working. So they're going to work. Some of them, of course, work a different shift. But one of the other gaps we have is what do they do during the day? I mean, a lot are at the library and stuff. We have found our guests to be respectful and kind and are. And if we ask them, you know, this, we have never had a problem with them hanging out at private property. And I think if we. That's one of the rules, if you will. We have rules at the shelter. There's conditions and, you know, and just simply to let them know that private property is private property. I, you know that.
I think you use the phrase what can we do to guarantee or insure we can't? Just like we don't now.
Well, you had mentioned earlier about being.
In, you know.
That'S what this area is. How do you keep them out of the alley? How do you keep them out of people's garages, as you had mentioned?
I'd say typically they're not. I mean, the guests at the shelter are not those people. It's the people who can't find room at the shelter, but that's just overnight.
So you kick them out in the morning, to put it one. So from morning to night, where are they going? Where are they going?
They're going to the library. I know the Salvation army two days a week has. They're walking to Walmart, they're walking out to Lowe's. I mean, they're getting on the bus. The location of being a few more blocks away from certain things is not going to impede them at all. I say Salvation army twice a week is offering lunch, which expanded beyond. I mean, it's not just like a half hour thing to hang out on Sundays. We had ascend services has opened up one of their facilities during the day. So I think that they'll be respectful of private property like they have been. I mean, we haven't had, crime rates have not increased around the shelter and things. So I think the guests will go. So typically they're not staying. They're not staying around the shelter.
I have a question.
Yeah, I want to. I just want to.
Well, I've been holding my hand for quite a while. You said that these people in the program in the apartments are background checked. What about the people that are overnight? Are they background checked? Do you know where they come from.
As a low barrier shelter, as we've run that the last two seasons? No, though they do not have background checks on them. We do have a policy that works with law enforcement that if there is a. I can't remember the law enforcement phrases, but if they have, we can have a relationship where they can come in. And if there is, if they are looking for somebody and have reasonable cause, is that the right phrase? Plausible cause that they're welcome to.
So they could have a record for all, you know.
Sure. Just like everybody else here who has a record here? I do.
I don't. Also, you had said that you have a very generous donor for the first year of expenses. What about the following years? Is that going to ever be passed on to the taxpayer?
No, this is not a city project. And so we have. No.
What about maintenance?
So one of our goals is that when we will fundraise for what high level expense? About 8 million. Okay. And then we want to add into that automatically another million that will create an endowment at the Lakeshore foundation so that there will be just generated money to help do maintenance. But also there will be. There will be funding generated by the rental of the apartments that will work. And then as any nonprofit, there will be additional, you know, community fundraisers. But this is not a county or a city project. So there's. This isn't a tax thing.
Well, what about extra police force that we pay for that.
So you would have to ask law enforcement. But at this point, they haven't added any extra law enforcement. You have something to add to that?
At the shelter, were open two seasons, 150 days each total of 300 days. I was there 294 of them. So I can. That's my background. When we called 911, were calling for rescue squad. We were calling because someone was having a stroke. We were calling because someone was having an apparent heart attack. We weren't calling because we had an illegal situation. Now, we have been told that we have saved the life of the person who was having a stroke, that had he been sleeping in his car or worse, he would have passed away. Obviously, these medical incidents would take place whether they were in the shelter under the watchful eye of volunteers, or out in the public.
Yeah, but you're comparing apples to oranges. You've never had a building this size in the middle of a residential neighborhood, and you've never had any trouble at all?
Let's have everyone have a chance. I want to go back to you because you had your hand up.
Check that out with the police.
I was just wondering if the vision could include some kind of cottage industry that. For training, for maybe helping those people that haven't worked in a while. I don't know if there's any programs like that, but that might also help generate some income and good teaching, still something to do during the day that maybe some of them would be a good fit for. And I also wanted to say that I had a family member before the warming shelter downtown who almost froze to death on a night when it was below zero. And yes, they were a drug addict.
But they told me when they were in recovery, they asked me to take them to the lutheran church on Meadow Lane, and they wanted to specifically talk to the assistant pastor because they knocked on his door and he gave them a voucher for a motel for two nights, or they could have possibly frozen to death. She was so grateful. So I just want to put that out there that if it hits home.
For you.
I appreciate your idea, and we'll certainly have that.
So this question probably goes beyond only the neighborhood, but at the concern is this program going to stay within the people that live in this town, or are we going to be welcoming people with Chabot, Green Bay, and all that? That would be an issue because, you know, sometimes the id doesn't match something from Manitowoc. They don't know the streets and things like that. So is there any chance that you guys are going to just take before all the managewalk people that we already know?
We would like to have a Manitowoc county first. Is that the right way to say it, Jan?
Yeah. We always take Manitowoc county residents first. That's the priority.
And also with the warming shelter, that's why we don't want to have more beds than we see the current need for this community.
Well, yeah, but at the end, if they're already here from Sheboygan, they took the right and all that, and they're already here. All the issues that they already mentioned, if they're gonna happen, they're gonna tend in this area or in the alley, walk around, you know, so I don't see. We don't see so much of that.
Issue of being homeless.
So is this gonna trigger something that is gonna make more people from other states?
You know, again, you know, there's certain things which, you know, I don't have a crystal ball, but. But again, though, the last two seasons of having a warming shelter have not created that. And the ten years at the Haven and the 20 years have not. Have not statistically shown that people are intentionally saying, I now need to use the last of my financial resources to travel to Manitowoc, particularly during the winter. So I want to let Brittany had a.
So I really want to mention that part because, like, not only have we seen from historically that it doesn't. It hasn't increased in any of the programs we currently have that open my.
Brain, I was like, oh, I was ready.
Was that.
Okay? Yeah. Yeah. Describe the security plans you have for the warming, Shelley, as to what types.
Of people are.
And how they go about doing that. Okay. I can talk a little bit about what it is now, knowing that isn't the same as what it will be here. And between now and 18 months, we haven't, you know, as far as, like, well, what does that mean with. With lighting and with camera systems? I can't. I can't answer all those questions about this. Personnel, currently. Personnel has been, has all, is currently, is all volunteer with training, and that includes involvement with law enforcement. They serve on the steering committee for the warming shelter and things. So that's how it's currently being staffed.
Pastor.
The main thing I did was I was officially the line monitor. It fell to me to count off the twelve people who were going to be allowed in. When I would walk up to number 13 or number 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, the fear in their eyes was so intense, I often had to turn away. I'm not an overly emotional person, but when I look at someone who has now got to figure out what piece of pavement they're going to sleep on, it rips me apart. Now, what does that mean for the security of the people who are staying in the shelter? The people staying in the shelter. Pay attention when we go over the guidelines, which we do every time there's a new person, or any time on a frequent basis, not every single day, because we have repeat guests.
They all know and they understand that because there is this pressure of these up to eight people out here, they mess up or they go against the guidelines, they could be asked to leave so that someone else would come in. This fear combined with the safety of a warm, safe, clean environment with a hot meal and people who care, keep the guests in a very comfortable, easy to talk to manner. Out of the twelve that come in at a night.
It'S already happening.
It's happening now with everything over twelve.
One voice at a time. Folks, this is a community.
You're bringing it into our neighborhood. We're asking what you're going to do to help protect our neighborhood.
By increasing our capacity to twelve beyond the eight that, up to eight that we know we shouldn't have that. I suspect that if there are homeless in this area, and I believe there are, they're already in places that you don't even know about because they've adapted to their environment. What we're doing is we're pulling them off the street. In the twelve most vulnerable times of the day. From the shelter, there is a migration. South. Library, painting pathways.
YMca.
YMca.
Grow it forward.
Grow it forward. There's all these places that they're headed towards. They have no interest in going away or north in this case, because there aren't resources up there. There's not meals, there's not warm, safe places for them.
Okay, we'll go back. And they have created a community themselves and they hang together.
And so they don't, they're not going.
To the peace by themselves.
They hang together.
They have created a community where they.
Are safe in their numbers with each other and they look out for each other. So I just can't imagine that they would branch out, that they are going to stay, as Ken said, they're going.
To go where their opportunities are to be together.
Well, that's what we're here today for, and that's what history stands for. We didn't see no flyers or anything.
Nothing.
And that's on you now. I would take it even a step farther. Something in this bank should be a referendum.
We have election six months coming.
Off. Yeah, I mean I can appreciate that sentiment, but this isn't, this isn't a city funded thing and therefore it's a dictatorship. Well, we haven't purchased the building. I told you what the conditions for purchase are. Yeah, I believe Mister Cummings. Well, and this, you may not live here, literally right here that the shelter is Mike Cummings. And I believe over there is. Yes. You always said about security and everything and getting people back to work. I know you guys have a shelter down the history every time, because I live here, every time I pass a quick tripod, there's always two or one squad car outside. There's always fights in there all the time. Okay, I hear that. I appreciate that.
Absolutely.
A sweat equity is something that may happen. Absolutely. And they take advantage of many opportunities like that now. So I'm not going to tell you something that we have a plan worked out where they will do all necessary maintenance and janitorial thing. Because what I hear is similar to another one about how can, you know, what are some ways that we can help both teach them or give them some skills that they may take advantage of the incredible skills that they already. So, yeah, I mean, I think that certainly is part of our long term, you know, discussion on how we can do that. I use the term sweat equity. You know, that they're putting something into those resources.
Not a question, statement. The reason you had mentioned, first of all, that neighborhoods or neighbors may be concerned about their taxes, property, you know, their values going down, their property they will go down. I mean if you cross Washington to where all of your very wonderful programs are, the taxes or the property values are lower than they are in this neighborhood? It's just a fact. Just a fact.
Couldn't that because the houses on the south side are older?
No, no.
Are you saying that the property taxes.
No, I'm talking about value tax or property values. Yeah. I'm a realtor. I know that this. This side of the city is. I'm not talking about the hope house reputation or anything. I'm just stating a fact that the south side's property values are lower than they are here.
Always works.
Okay.
Thank you.
And this is just a question to everybody. Are you guys concerned about putting people from encourage Hope House Haven, all of those places that are separated now because we need security for the men's shelter. You need security for domestic violence, you need security for sexual assault victims, you need security for all of those people. And you have them in all different places due to that and background check them. You do all these kind of things. Programs are great that they're working for. I 100% agree with that. But now you're going to put them all in one area, in one apartment complex. So that is my thought about this. Or concern about. About that.
Sure. Can they trigger each other or something.
Coming in and those people haven't been bedded and there, I understand locks and everything, but if they both walk out the same door, they're in the same area. Is that a concern? Because if you have somebody in the warming shelter who isn't supposed to have contact with somebody here who says they're not becoming a nice.
There's a lot of things to work out as we work it out.
Yeah.
Big thing is how do we secure, make it secure and safe for people? Because we're helping people transition to safety as they move out into society. So, yeah. So do we have the answer yet? No, but we know we need to. We know we need to. But, yeah, we're just starting. We started talking a couple months ago when this all started coming together. So we're in the process of getting there. We have 18 months to figure it out.
And you know, too, then the safety of the building and everybody in it, and then the safety of all the neighborhood and everybody around it as well. Because if there's going to be issues with that community and there's going to be issues around the neighborhood community as well, if you're bringing, you know what I'm saying? If there's nothing that conflict, that's just.
I like, I learned what to answer a question with a question. Who's controlling who's living in all the.
Rental apartments in this neighborhood?
No. Who's controlling who's living in the neighborhoods in this community? Who's making sure they're all safe in these rentals in this community?
Police.
Who's making sure that?
Police. Our local police. No, landlords don't do ___. They don't have to do ___.
Stop. Police.
Well, hi.
Are we on opposite sides on this?
Actually, yeah. And I don't even live here. I live in two rivers.
It's gonna be a __ show.
Making advancements 150. And I don't see that 150 number getting smaller as the real estate market.
Remember that they're coming to where they are under total programs, where they're under rules.
I mean, I get that.
And that's not going to change when they come here from the news.
Doesn't mean that they always follow the rules of the program.
I work every day.
And so if they don't, you know, if they don't follow the rules, they're out. And we answer people when they don't, you know, find child care for their children. And, you know, so all these things are totally case management at home.
It would come. It would come through the agency that they entered.
Okay, so it wouldn't be here directly. It would be from. If they're at the case management.
Correct.
So it's not here.
They're having case management not through here, but it may physically happen. Yeah. I would just say the mix of people. The nice thing is that because they are in a program and we know something, they'll be able to determine that this person may not be in the right. We'll know more about them than other apartments and or just home buyers and home rental things. So we try to address some of that, and some people just are tension built with other people around. And some of that we may know. So clearly, if we work with encourage, there's not going to be the person seeking services there, and the person who helped make them go into service are going to be the same.
Transitional housing. Some people, you know, as we've said before, some people might need 120 days of, you know, being in home, and they may never be ready for transitional living. So we have to help them through the rest of the process. So the people that will be here are those that are ready to learn, be on their own, and then get out to be independent members of the.
I live in the neighborhood. Okay. The most important, the important thing about each one of you and me and anybody who might be here is their intrinsic value as a human being. But each human being has an intrinsic value because they're human. So we don't have to trust everyone, right? Maybe not everybody deserves our trust, but everybody deserves respect. And when we don't have compassion, that's looking at us. So I understand, and I bet you they have really smart people working on.
All of it, and they're going to.
Want input so that everybody sees public.
Insurance.
That we are truly responding as a human being, compassion for one another, because as we're compassionate, it's going to grow. A compassionate community. That's right. Now, you have two important meetings coming up, right.
The city.
The first one's Wednesday evening, 06:00 p.m.?
Right? Yes. That's what the public hearing with the site or the plan commission. And then June 17, we would love to have people come and to share your thoughts, your values. I mean, the same types of things that were shared today.
Thank you.
Okay.
Your thought is also that with this transitional housing, those people, there will be.
Someone here that will be case managing.
24/7 not necessarily living.
There will be someone here, like at the warming shelter.
There will be somebody here.
Whenever the warming shows shelters open and the traditional housing, they'll be case managers, checking in daily or weekly or however.
Far along they are.
Yeah.
On their own, running around, doing whatever. They will be under an umbrella of monitor.
They can do whatever they want. Right. They're adults. They can leave.
Yeah.
Go and do whatever they want. So that doesn't stop people from doing. Right. Just like any homeowner, any apartment, any.
Apartment.
We have more control over that. So if they live here and they do something wrong, and he says, you're out. So if they put them on the street, where do they go? Do they go to the warming shelter? Do they stay in our neighborhood? That's our concern. They're going to where they go without it right now, which is, unfortunately where they are right now. All across the community, usually more out in the rural areas under the 21st.
Street Cathay.
Down from the cemetery where they have it should have come out Thursday.
So on Thursdays. Well, should have been. I'm saying should have been. So the plan commission meeting is next Wednesday, and with every plan commission meeting, there's a community mailing within some radius of the area. So the city should have mailed this out already. So if you don't have it, you should be getting it soon. If you have it, contact the plan commission and say, why do I. Why haven't I received the mail and.
I couldn't tell you what that radius is.
So we wanted to. We wanted to have this gathering before you receive the mailing.
And if you. Yeah. And remember, if you don't own your house, unfortunately, you don't get a mailing.
The property owner.
Property owner does. So I mean, that, again, that's. That's it. That's a city thing. So if you're a renter, you may. Your. Your landlord may not share that with you.
Okay, one.
One more that I want to be respectful of our hour.
We've had homeless for longer than we can ever imagine. I had taken a course at Green Bay, and I said, well, we don't have that many. She said, they're coming to us. We have no place.
Thank you for bringing this to fruition. We never thought about it two seasons ago.
Thank you, pastor, so much.
Okay, so I want to be respectful of our hour together. So, again, thank you all for coming. Continued dialogue, it makes us a healthier community, so thank you.
I guess so.

2024.05.20 20:24 SeredW Into the heart of Romans: Romans 8:34-39 Nothing Can Separate Us From God’s Love

This is the final installment in the series about N.T. Wright's 'Into the heart of Romans'. Originally a collection, that feature has since been deprecated by Reddit, leaving this series as a bunch of separate, unorganized posts :-( I'll add a flair to each of them later to make them searchable (edit: flair added!)
What I've learned about myself: I am bad at finishing books. By the time you've read 80% or so, the main conclusions and revelations have usually been drawn, and I have a hard time pushing through and finishing the whole thing. This weekend I finally made time to finish writing this final part for this book, after beginning this series months ago. I apologize for the delay.
I am grateful to Wright for writing this book. It is a grandiose view of God's love, the work of the Messiah and the Spirit in and through us. It is really worth checking out!
Without further ado, the final chapter.

Romans 8:34-39 Nothing Can Separate Us From God’s Love

‘Romans 8 ends on a note of wonderful confidence’. Philosophers have always tried to find solid ground, how can we know? Decartes claimed ‘I think, therefore I am’ (cogito, ergu sum) and ‘much subsequent western thought has tried to build on that, with (to say the least) mixed success’. Bishop Leslie Newbigin even altered that statement some time ago into ‘tesco, ergo sum’: I shop, therefore I am!
But Paul says something different: Amor, ergo sum: I am loved, therefore I am. ‘The gospel urges upon us an epistemology of love’, not simply the feeling, but agape, the generous self-giving which affirms the reality of what is known and loved. When Paul says ‘I am persuaded’ in verse 38, he isn’t just summing up Romans 5-8 but he’s also looking at ancient intellectual life and philosophy, saying ‘this is where you can stand’.
This is the love of God the creator, anchored in Jesus. In this passage Paul lists grave threats and forces aligned against us, but ‘the gospel itself, the message about Jesus crucified, risen, ascended, interceding, holds us in place despite everything: God’s love in the Messiah, Jesus our Lord’.
This answers the first common question, about the beginning and the end of the section, we’ve answered in each chapter so far: it begins and ends with God’s love, in verses 35 and 39.
For the second question, we’d usually look at the small connecting words, but again Paul isn’t using careful argumentation here, but a rhetorical device: seven threats in 35, and larger powers in 38-39a. Paul invokes Psalm 44 when speaking of the threats, but then claims that ‘the one who loved us (37) will enable us to be not just victorious, but super-victorious (hypernikomen). Why (gar, 38)? Because no forces on earth or in heaven can separate us from that same love.
The third regular question: what about the wider world in which Paul’s hearers would receive this message? The ‘question of confidence’ is vital, today as it was back then. We know God will look after us after death and we can cling to Jesus when bad things happen, but there is something else going on here.
People in Paul’s culture (and today!) might interpret the bad things happening to Christians as a sign that God was angry with them. They assume that if you live your life in tune with God, you wouldn’t have any problems. But if there are problems such as persecution, ‘the people or indeed the whole movement had obviously gone off the rails.’ Wright here devotes a few paragraphs to criticizing the western world, as pandemics and wars disrupt what seemed to be a success story but made victims along the way. ‘How should we look out upon a world in a mess?’ That question must have occupied the minds of Roman thinkers as well, as the empire’s rhetoric of peace and prosperity sounded hollow, especially to Jews at times of anti-Jewish riots or for instance when Caligula tried putting a statue of himself in the Jerusalem temple. Jews read Daniel’s prophecy about the 490 years and they too expected God to step in when the situation became very bad or dangerous. ‘For all these reasons, the two lists of dangers and hostile forces would represent real and present threats to Paul’s hearers’.
Paul had been questioned about this before. In Corinth, some wondered whether God would allow a proper apostle to lead such a bizarre life as Paul had, including persecutions and dangers. In 2 Corinthians, Paul turns that argument on its head in a ‘glorious, ironic rebuttal’: all the bad things that happen to Paul, he insists, are actually ‘the defining marks of genuine apostleship’. Romans was written not long after 2 Corinthians and Paul may have thought about vulnerable Christian groups in Rome, too. For instance, the gentile believers in Rome might regard the Jews, who were expelled under Claudius, as ‘obviously under divine displeasure’, which could lead to these gentile believers becoming ‘Job’s comforters’ to these Jewish Christians when they returned under Nero.
Wright ‘suspects’ that Paul isn’t just talking about ‘assurance of final salvation’ here but also about ‘penultimate assurance’, which his part of the doctrine of justification. This assurance is what we as Christians ought to give to one another: ‘we are to see one another’s misfortunes and sorrows, not as signs of God’s displeasure, […] but rather as part of the calling to share in the messianic woes, in wich – as in verses 26 and 27 – the spirit is calling out to the father from the heart of the pain and perplexity’.
Christians still make mistakes, some still step off ‘the steep ladder of vocation and settled for a gentler climb’. Compromised Christians or a worldly church no longer challenge their wider community. But those who refuse to slide into the world’s ways of thinking may well face real trouble. Paul makes that point in verse 36, where he cites Psalm 44. In that psalm, the psalmist celebrates God’s promises, but complains that they have not been coming true, even though they have kept the covenant. They have remained faithful, and yet this is happening. The psalmist concludes: it must be because of you, it is ‘for your sake’ (Ps 44:22). He knows God is in charge, but there must be ‘stranger, darker and deeper things going on in the world than one would see on the surface’. There were earlier allusions to Ps 44 (Rom 8:27 echoing Ps 44:21) and now Paul points to the next verse, Ps 44:22 to express the belief that the ‘severe troubles of God’s people are somehow for God’s sake’. As seen in 17-30 already, ‘the point seems to be that those facing severe troubles are somehow sharing in the Messiah’s present redemptive sufferings’, a point on which Wright will later elaborate.
Paul isn’t simply saying ‘everything is going to be all right, nothing else really matters’. He is saying that in a way, but he is doing so in a world that saw misfortune as a sign of divine misfortune. No, this is part of our vocation, our calling to bear in the spirit the pain of the world. This is part of our salvific ministry in and for the world. ‘Paul is, as it were, applying the unique fact of Jesus’ crucifixion to the present sufferings of Jesus’ people as they stand in prayer, as in verses 26 and 27, at the heart of the suffering world’. Our sharing in the messianic woes makes us part of the way in which Jesus’ victorious death is applied to the world (Colossians 1:24). ‘With the spirit groaning within us, we are called to share in God’s rescue plan for the whole world’.
Let’s remind ourselves how the last five verses work. There aren’t many connecting words. The troubles mentioned, just like the cross of Christ, aren’t unpleasant or ghastly things we have (or Christ had) to endure, but actually the setting for the greater victory, in which ‘all opposition is not just defeated but swept off the board’. Twice Paul uses alla, but, to make this point, in verses 36 and 37. In 38, we then get a gar which explains this seemingly counter-intuitive super-victory, which is based on the ‘unbreakable love of God himself, of which Paul has become utterly persuaded’. This love is the framework for these verses, opening with the Messiah’s love in 35 and ending in 39 with ‘the love of God in the Messiah Jesus our Lord’. Verse 37 too mentions love, as a halfway stepping stone. And with this, this major portion of Romans (5-8) returns to where it began, in Romans 5, where God’s love is displayed in action in the death of Jesus, and is being poured out in our hearts by the spirit. Paul has now, at last, worked his way back to that ‘great statement’.
Paul offers two lists here, as part of his heightened rhetoric: 7 bad things that might happen to you in verse 35, and ten power structures that might be arranged against you in 38-39. Seven plus ten, in ancient rhetoric, indicates a kind of completeness: ‘anything and everything the world, the flesh and the devil might throw at you.’ 31-39 draw together ‘the whole scripture, all human experience, the whole hostile world, and the whole victorious gospel’. Nothing can sepate us, those in the Messiah, from the love of God. And for the first time since Rom 5:6-10, Paul makes clear that it is all about that love.
Wright thinks we don’t ‘sufficiently ponder’ what that means. We know about Gods love, but to we really understand it? Wright proposes to ‘rattle the cage a bit’. First, many Romans believed Rome had a secret name, its Latin name spelled backwards: Amor, Latin for Love. Romans believed they descended from Aeneas, the son of the love goddess Venus. It’s ‘quite possible’ that Paul here is reclaiming love (agape), as ‘the deepest truth of the creator God’ instead of as a secret name of a pagan city. This matches with the other ‘subversive’ way in which Paul appropriates Roman imperial language for the Gospel, such as ‘gospel’ and ‘Lord’ (kyrios), words Rome used for its own rulers and messages of imperial benevolence and peace. Paul reclaims those words and applies them to Jesus as the true ‘Son of God’ and lord of the whole world, bringing true justice and peace. ‘No wonder the rulers and authorities of Paul’s day struck back in every way they could’ and that is the context for the final passage. Second, in verses 35 and 37 Paul speaks of the Messiah’s love, the love of Christ. That is actually quite rare. Wright lists a few examples in 2 Cor 5, Gal 2, Eph 3 and 5, but that’s about it. Paul speaks often of the love of God ‘that sent the son to die’. And when Paul speaks of grace, he speaks of ‘the grace of Lord Jesus’, not of the Messiah. So why, here, the Messiah’s love? In scripture or extrabiblical sources, there ‘is nothing to suggest that if and when a Messiah turned up he would act out of love. Ruling, bringing justice, defeating enemies, but not love. So where does it come from, here at the heart of the passage and the rhetorical climax of the letter so far?
The answer must be ‘the great Biblical theme of the love of YHWH himself, Israels God’. And the idea of the Messiah’s love must mean that the Messiah is the personal embodiment of Israel’s God. God loves his people (as we see in scripture, Wright cites examples) and the Messiah ‘clothes that love in human flesh and blood’.
And to speak of God’s love is to speak of the covenant, God’s unbreakable loyalty to his people and covenant renewal through the Messiah. Now, European philosophers since Hegel have thought in terms of progress through either evolution or revolution. It can’t be both, and theologians have likewise said that Paul’s theology can’t be both ‘covenantal’ (evolutionary) and ‘apocalyptic’ (revolutionary). These categories have joined ‘forensic’ which has been used to analyse Paul, which means ‘belonging in a law court’. But, in Romans 8 we have ‘in the same breath, the covenant with Israel, now focused on the Messiah, and at the same time we have the sudden inbreaking of God’s powerful rescuing love in the new messianic exodus’. ‘Apocalyptic’ and ‘covenant faithfulness’ fit together in ancient Israelite and Jewish thought. Paul has also spoken of the unveiling (apokalypsis) to the world of the justice of God. All this explains, says Wright, why he sometimes translates the key term dikaoisyne not as ‘righteousness’ (which has its own modern theological misleading connotations) but as ‘covenant justice’, which draws together the covenantal and forensic categories together, in line with the Hebrew tsedaqah which in the Septuagint is often translated with dikaiosyne. We have to stop applying post-Enlightenment, modern categories; we shouldn’t give 19th century answers to 16th century questions, but 21st century answers to 1st century questions. We have to think like ‘first-century, Bible-soaked, Messiah-focused Jews’. That’s the only way to learn to understand our own world.
This agape love of which Paul speaks, what is that exactly? Not some special sort of Christian love; the Septuagint uses it for God’s love for his people as well as for destructive lust. The early Christian use of agape picks up on the theme of the Hebrew hesed (mercy, loving kindness, generosity) rather than a linguistic phenomenon. Both Paul and John use it to indicate the ‘biblical theme’ of divine love and God’s faithfulness to his covenant and its purposes, now fulfilled in Jesus. But, again, Jewish and Biblical thought never links this to the Messiah. There are three other (converging) answers as to why Paul speaks of the Messiah’s love. **First, ‘**early Christian throught began with reflection on the resurrection of the crucified Jesus’. This had to be the revelation-in-action of the long promised divine love, if it was the new exodus: God the Creator had at last remembered his long promised mercy. God had promised to reconcile the world to himself in reconciling love, and this had happened through the Messiah. God’s plan for himself and the Messiah converged in a way that was not apparent from contemporary Jewish readings of Scripture, but it became obvious in the light of Jesus. Wright connects this to the hesed Adonai, the loving kindness of YHWH himself. Second, Jesus’ first followers did not separate his resurrection from their memory of him before his death. Jesus displayed a ‘sovereign kindness in so much of what he did’, his closest followers knew him, and they spoke of his crucifixion itself as the supreme act of love. (John 13:1). Third, ‘the church’s present awareness of the person of Jesus himself’. ‘That strange presence’, always loving, promised and experienced in the sacraments for instance. ‘The Jesus who was experienced as a man of love before his crucifixion was known personally as the loving Lord in the intimate prayerful life of his followers’. ‘Memory and experience dovetail with the scriptural promises of YHWH’s rescuing love’, resulting in this remarkable theme, written less than 25 years after the crucifixion (!). This is, then ‘a radical innovation in Jewish messianic thinking’, as Jesus’ first followers came to see him as the human embodiment of Israels God. This passage is designed to give comfort and assurance, but underneath is a revolutionary theology of incarnation. Coupled with what has been said in Rom 8 about the spirit (pneumatology), this is ‘one of the greatest expositions of Trinitarian thought from any point of Christian history’. Not in the shape of cold theory, but in the shape of gratitude, allegiance, faith, hope and answering love.
At last, we can now walk through these verses and see how they work.
In 35b, Paul lists ‘the physical dangers and threats he himself had met’ or expected to meet, and his hearers might encounter soon as well. In the Greek, the list has an ‘audible punch’ which is not easy to pick up in English.
·Suffering and hardship: physical pain and cultural challenges such as loss of home or job.
· Persecution: Paul had experienced it and he could see it coming for the community in Rome.
· Famine: uncommon for us westerners, but a regular occurrence in those days.
· Nakedness: could happen after a shipwreck or at a public beating.
· The sword, machaira, a short sword used for executions, not in battle.
In Paul’s days, many would have said that if these things happen to you, the gods must be angry with you, you must have done something wrong. But in vs 36, Paul cites Ps 44 to ward of any suggestion that divine displeasure is causing these things. In Ps 44, the psalmist says that ‘all these things have come upon us, but we have not played you false or denied the covenant’. We suffer ‘because of you’ says the psalmist and Paul echoes that, we suffer ‘on your account’ (heneken sou), because of you we are sheep destined for slaughter. These sufferings are not signs of heaven-sent anger, but but ‘actually the outworking of the purpose which was sketched in 8:18-27’. What’s more, this verse closely echoes the Isaianic language for the suffering Servant, in Is. 53:7. That means these sufferings can be seen as ‘Messianic afflictions’, not just some nasty things to get through. They are to be embraced as part of the ‘redemptive vocations’. ‘This is where the wounds of Jesus meet the wounds of the world’. We are ‘reckoned’ sheep for the slaughter, just as the Messiah, when we are baptized and justified in him.
BUT… verse 37 begins with alla, ‘but’. Don’t let all these things ‘dominate your horizon’, because ‘in all these things we are super-conquerors, hypernikomen’. The enemy has been completely wiped out. Through our participation in the messianic sufferings, the ‘pain and the anger of the world may itself be exhausted and overcome’, through the supreme act of love of the Messiah and our participation in those sufferings, when we go ‘prayerfully to the dark places, to bring God’s light and healing right there’.
The reason for this ‘extraordinary analysis’ is given with the gar of verse 38, pepeismai gar. Paul is persuaded, he ‘has done the math’. He has listed 7 dangers and 10 powers that could attack us, ‘and he declares that none of them can come between the believer and the lof of God in Messiah Jesus’. The list of ten dangers is mostly arranged in pairs. We can read this list as ‘north, south, east, west’: Paul is covering the bases, it includes our possible states (life and death), the past and our (uncertain) future, powers in heaven and on earth, and anything in the cosmos. All of this is created, they are all creatures, ‘part of the world made by God, whereas the gospel is about the incarnate love of the creator himself’. These creatures, taken over by powers darker than themselves might indeed try separate us from the divine and messianic love, that is part of the ‘groaning of creation’, the out-of-jointness of God’s good creation. That creation will be rescued from its slavery to decay (8:19-25), that is the ultimate answer to that problem, and therefore also to any intermediate problems that might arise from the ‘creatures’ as they still are. Paul has lived experience with these powers, but he knows they will fail to separate us from the love of God.
Our human love experiences separation regularly (travel, work, death), but this love gives assurance of eternal unbreakability. Hard to imagine, but that is what the gospel provides. And with Paul, we need to be persuaded of all of this, ‘because of the resurrection of the crucified son of God’. It doesn’t all depend on the cross like some think, either because of a theological liberalism or because their specific atonement theory doesn’t really seem to need the resurrection. But the resurrection is the victory, where the creator God declared that the crucified and risen was indeed really his son, Israels Messiah and the world’s lord.
That’s after all where Romans began, from 1.3-5. Wright briefly recaps Romans from 1-5 and then 5-8. In the end, 8 ‘comes back full circle’ to the introduction in 5:1-11: ‘justification leads to glory, marking out the path of suffering and hope, sustained by the spirit-given love of God’, ‘this in itself is rooted in God’s action of utter self-giving love in the Messiah’. ‘That is where this first half or Romans now concludes’.
The victorious covenant love of God isn’t some fuzzy generalized sense of the transcendent or something like that. It’s not some conviction you have to talk yourself into. No, his conviction, persuasion and assurance all follow from the central ‘good news’ event of Easter. ‘If God really did raise Jesus the Messiah from the dead… then everything follows’. Wright here repeats an anecdote he often shared as a speaker, about a London cabbie who saw Wright was a bishop, and said to him: ‘What I always say, is if God raised Jesus Christ from the dead, then everything else is just rock ‘n roll, innit?’ ‘That is Paul’s doctrine of assurance in a nutshell. Nothing else in all creation can separate us from God’s love in the Messiah, Jesus our Lord’.

2024.05.20 19:37 CreamCheeseTribadist Strangers Chapter 1 (Contains Spoilers)

Strangers Chapter 1 (2024) (Psychological Horror) is getting hated on way too much
I will start off by saying this is not my favorite Strangers installment, but Strangers IS my favorite horror property and I have got to defend the good in this sea of bandwagon hate its getting. Strangers Chapter 1 is receiving overwhelmingly negative reviews for some pretty minor horror movie offenses, and as a long time fan of The Strangers here are my more grounded and in depth takes on the good and the bad of the first installment of the upcoming trilogy.
-Costume designs: More or less are pretty stripped down. Some improvements, some downsides. I think taking Man in the masks suit away for an outdoors jacket matches the environment, but hurts the imposing nature he has a bit. Same for Pin Up Girl, as the dress under the jacket was very fitting for her usual design and the jacket just covers that up so much. Dollface is really the only one that the jacket doesn't hinder design wise, cause her costume has always been more casual street attire. The beanies for Pin Up and Doll face were also pretty out of place, as it makes them less distinguishable from one another, in a low light or far away shot it's less immediately recognizable when you can't see long blonde or short black hair. And as it's always a point of discussion, Man in the masks' mask design is a lot less menacing than usual. The material looks a bit too smooth for my liking, almost like a thin leather as opposed to the almost pillowcasey design of the original, or the rough burlap of Prey at Night. The eye shape just doesn't match the mouth shape. Love the smirk shape for the mouth but the eyes are a little too cartoony. The Pin Up mask however looks the best it ever has. The proportions and coloring look fantastic. Doll face looks more or less consistent with the other movies.
-Setting: I think the AirBNB itself looks great, it feels very lived in and enclosed. Defnetley not somewhere you would wanna be hunted in. But I feel like it does suffer from being just kind of in the woods, as the house from the original and the trailer park from Prey at Night both have the benefit of being surrounded by open space, so there's nowhere to really run to, especially when they have their truck to pursue you in. In the area of the AirBNB it's surrounded by dense trees and rough terrain. Lots of hiding spots and no mobility for the truck past the main road and driveway. So once the victims are in the woods, it's just a foot chase which feels incredibly uncharacteristic of the Strangers to choose this as a setting. I wish more of the movie would have been set inside the AirBNB.
-Pacing/Psychological horror: I think this for me is one of the harder parts to judge as this is the first of 3 chapters in a trilogy. But if I'm treating this as a solo installment, which I'm not planning to for any other part of this, I will say there was a little too much focus on the setup of the "Spooky hick town" that it took away from the isolation feeling of the AirBNB. I would have been fine with Diner, Car breaks, Go to cabin, and just tell me the boyfriend leaves to get food/inhaler from car. Showing a whole two scenes of stopping by the car repair shop and burger joint and talking to locals and spooky mechanic and even the burger shop workers kind of kills the build up of being put in the AirBNB in the first place. A key fun aspect of Strangers is that you are alone and isolated when they decide to attack. Every aspect is planned. Had he taken the diner workers up on the offer to stay and hang out, or even more so, had the girlfriend come with him to get food, and they stayed and chatted shit with the workers where would that leave the strangers? Waiting patiently on their return? The Strangers are normally smart, methodical, toying, and control every aspect of the victims environment. They wouldn't have left a fully functional motorcycle to be taken for a stroll into town. And they wouldn't have left a shotgun hanging out in a shed to be found. (Key example being in Prey at Night, going through and removing all the knives and potential weapons from the trailer drawers). All that negative out if the way, I will say the actual pacing of the psychological scares are great. From covering the peephole very calmly rather than the usual eye shot, or stab to the face, to repeating the piano riff to show you've been being watched for much longer than you think, to the classic "Hello"s placed on the inside of the door to a room you know they'll hide in, to Man in the mask axing open said door, peering in, and then calmly walking away is actually chilling.
-The Strangers: Each Strangers movie typically has a large unwritten focus on the role each killer plays, if you watch the original or Prey at Night, you'll notice that there are 3 roles they normally stick to, Man in the Mask is the muscle, the large imposing force keeping you feeling trapped and overpowered. Dollface is the one playing games, toying with you. She's typically the one writing the "Hello"s, smashing phones, securing potential weapons, wondering where in the world Tamara has gone off to. And Pin Up is almost always the eyes and ears. She's the one keeping track of the victims, finding all the hiding spots, often seen guaring the perimeter, if youre in a building, she's outside pacing making sure you don't escape. Of course, this isn't a hard set rule or anything just a general theme that characterizes the killers thorough control over their attacks, they all play one of the other roles from time to time and kind of "take turns" depending on the situation. This movie for lack of optimism, just does not stick to that. The man in the mask stays a pretty solid brawn, but also stalks them more than either of the other killers? That's fine, I get that. But now Pin up is popping up at the victims left and right, and Dollface past the initial Tamara lines, is basically nowhere to be found. So I was like "oh okay, so dollface is surveillance this time" but she is basically nowhere to be found the rest of the movie? I was genuinely waiting for a Prey at Night style pop up the entire time the couple was under the floorboards trying to escape the house. They feel so incredibly disorganized in this one at certain points. It could be argued that they're early in their careers since it's supposed to be a retelling/prequel trilogy but then why would the show the skeleton in the woods if this is supposedly early into their killings? It just struck me as odd that they dont play more into the scare of the normal "There are 3 of them, but you really can only pay attention to 1 or 2 of them at a time, leaving the third to pop up when you least expect them." Aspect of the franchise.
-The Victims: There's not too much to say about the victims in this installment, but that's a very common theme in horror in general. The boyfriend is average, meant to be a slightly unlikable voice of reason against the backdrop of the tragically optimistic girlfriend, mostly for the purpose of the "You were right" esq dialogue when they're captured. The girlfriend is also pretty average aswell, they have a believable on screen compatibility as a couple. The setup is standard, not nearly as bad as people are making it sound though? Compared to the other 2 movies so far, it's on par. It's not really an important focus in a psychological horror like Strangers. It's a means to get them in the area they'll be trapped in. They are considerably lower on the survival instinct front. Very loud at times when it's just not at all appropriate. But also, the people being like "They're so dumb!" Aren't accounting for the fact that like...yeah. some people in real life are dumb as shit. Every single horror movie protagonist isn't going to be an expert survivalist. As is the case in real life.
-Sequel Setup: I'm optimistic as to where this will go moving forward, especially considering it sounds like it's meant to be digested as one continuous piece of media just divided up into 3 installments. Before the release I saw an article mentioning that one focus will be psychological response to/more long term effects of trauma, if executed well i think it'll be a really good thing to show. Kind of how they teased at the end of Prey at Night in the hospital. Being terrified of people simply knocking on a door or making sure you always map an escape from an environment, never truly finding comfort in silence, and never trusting interactions with anyone you haven't known for years.
Lastly, Things I do and don't want to happen moving forward: I don't need to know what they look like under their masks, I don't need to know why they're doing what they're doing, I don't need a super in depth back story of who Tamara is or if she even is a real person, and i don't need it to be a whole big cnspiracy with the silly little spooky town Chapter 1 is set in. It will only hurt the horror of the franchise as a whole. I would like to know, if anything what the little mormon kids have to do with the moral implications of the story as a whole. I would like to see more organization among the killers over the future installments, a "learn from our mistakes" type of thing. I would love to see the burden of the killers initial attack start weighing more mentally on the girlfriend over the course of the next 2 installments. And I would love to see people reviewing this movie as "1/5 worst horror movie I've ever seen!" Learn to shut the fuck up and take a movie for what it is, and have some realistic perspective on the difference between a fun, campy, silly little horror franchise and the elevated, 2+ hour arthouse style, Ari Aster shaped dick in your mouth that every new horror fan seems to have nowadays, because that's not all that horror is. Horror is a lot of things, and as a horror fan myself we need to learn to chill the fuck out. They're silly little corn syrup videos we watch to have fun. There's room for all types of horror in the world.
Rating: 6.8/10
Looking forward to the next 2 installments, and hopefully it opens up more room for Strangers as a household name in horror.

2024.05.20 19:21 CreamCheeseTribadist Strangers Chapter 1 is getting hated on way too much

2024.05.20 18:11 captainlink72 When Destiny 2 approaches the end of it’s life, should there be a Craftening II?

[ TL;DR - Craftening was cool, and I’d like to see it return in an official capacity with even more weapons and perks available to mix and match. ]
I think we can all agree that the Craftening of September ‘23 was one of the most unhinged times of Destiny 2’s history, up there with those weekends of the of Doom-Beam Prometheus Lens and the Unleashed Lord of Wolves.
Whenever it’s time for us to say farewell to our dusty vaults filled with guns we swore we would use as soon as they “got buffed”, I can think of at least one way to send D2 out with a bang. The imminent arrival of Prismatic and the Exotic class items (both of which I’m sure will be added onto piecemeal over the upcoming Episodes) have pushed us to the point of ascending the mountain of power creep. So what better way to send the game off than to go completely off the rails with our paracausal powers and the tools with which we bring our might to bear?
Break the game wide open and allow us to create our own “Perfectly Shaped” weapons with unparalleled power. Let us create Glaives that shoot rockets, the return of Shotgun Ammit, Fusion Pistol (Rocket Sidearm base, with a Fusion Rifle’s projectiles), an Incandescent Hand Cannon that spreads SIVA nanites, whatever you can imagine! (Drop some of those ideas below!)
What better way to send us off than to let us go wild with our powers and our weapons? At that point, who really cares about the balance of the game or power creep when there’s a new game on the horizon? When we’ve moved on, I think the game would be far more fondly remembered if we were able to reminisce about the crazy weapons we made in the final months of the game.
(For the PvP crowd; maybe add a particular tag or the like to Perfectly Shaped weapons so they’re disabled in Crucible activities)
Will something like this happen? Eh, probably not, but it’s fun to speculate and throw ideas out there. After all, that’s what games are for, just to kick back and have some fun.

2024.05.20 17:57 Spiritual_Guess_7519 Virgo with ♐️ moon + Pisces with ♌️ moon = ??

Virgo(F) here with Sagittarius moon and Aries rising. Dealing with infatuation towards my long time friend(M) who is Pisces with Leo moon, ascendant unknown. I wonder if anyone in this sub had experience having relationships with someone with similar alignments and if so, what was it like? Is there any advice you’d suggest to understand him better to make things work?

2024.05.20 16:09 ImpossibleRead4200 Lost my closeted friend of 8 years by confessing. How can I get her back?

I've been in love with her for 8 years, almost from the moment we met. We were friends for 7 of those years. Last winter, everything changed. After we slept together for the first time last December, I confessed that I had loved her from the beginning. She said she felt the same—love at first sight.
(We are both bisexual women.)
From that point on, we started a heated, on-again, off-again affair that would last just a few weeks before she would deny having any feelings for me, insisting she "just sees me as a friend." Last September, we tried to go back to being friends, but ended up kissing and holding each other at a concert. The next day, I confronted her about it. She said she regretted it, even though she enjoyed it, because it set us back in our friendship. I poured my heart out, declaring my undying love for her. She ignored me for a week, then denied any significance to the kiss and ghosted me. I understand she's afraid and confused, but it doesn’t excuse how she treated me.
I can't imagine my life without her. Every morning for the past year, I've woken up realizing she's no longer a part of my life as my friend, muse, and lover. It feels unbearable.
For the past 8 years, she’s been my literary muse and intellectual counterpart. I've gone on many dates and made new friends, but none compare to her intellect, beauty, and deep soul.
My question is: how can we find our way back to friendship? Is it even possible when I'll forever be in love with her? Hearing about her relationship with her boyfriend kills me inside. How can I be her friend again when it causes me so much pain?
I am an INFP Aries, and she is an INTP Sagittarius (if you find meaning in the Zodiac).
