2024.05.18 21:27 Bbobsillypants Nature of Big Donuts 6 - a Stargate x NOP crossover fic - Fear

[FIRST][LAST]
Atlantis Commission
Officer Report - Lieutenant Colonel John Shepard
CLEARANCE LEVEL 5
Well this had definitely been a very interesting couple of hours. This dimension and its people had very odd opinions and ideas. Apparently the prey species of this dimension were all obligate cowards, whose instincts compelled them to be non-violent and run from threats. At least according to themselves. There were apparently some of them who were “predator diseased” as they called it, a disease which often resulted in increased violence, aggression, lack of empathy, and unheard like behavior. It sounded to me like some form of infectious psychopathy, but the venlil assured us it shouldn't affect us since we were predators, which didn’t really ease my fears, but hopefully it was something we could figure out when we got home if it ever became a problem.
Gotta love mandatory quarantine periods woo hoo!
As scary as this odd disease sounded, my main concern at the moment was to try and turn a professed coward into someone who could at the very least defend themselves.
I looked down to the table of gear ahead of me and then over to the mostly naked Venlil to my side, and then even farther to Tiel’c who thought It would be a good idea to help oversee Farva’s rapid fire training course. I fiddled with the bluetooth earpiece which was rigged up to one of our handhelds to run a translation program to speak directly with the captain. A big step up from our unknowingly one sided communications earlier.
I stepped on the other side of the plastic table and placed my hands down upon it and looked on at my new student..
“Welcome Captain Farva to our very impromptu accelerated course on Human arms armor and basic infantry tactics.” I said gesturing to the hodge podge gear we had managed to assemble for the good captain. “Are we ready to begin?”.
She flicked her ears, somewhat nervously by the looks.
“I’d take it that's a yes then?”
“Oh yes sorry”
“Alright then, well given that most of our crew is human and the only other alien struts around naked all the time, the only gear we have on hand is for humans, So you're going to be running size smalls and it's all going to fit all a bit big” I say as I toss her the tactical vest. ”Here try this on, we can try to tighten it up if it's a bit loose anywhere”. The captain wrestles with the buckles a bit, and Teal'c helps her tighten up some of the top straps, as the Venil’s shoulders weren't as broad as humans. Farva gave Teal’c an odd look, but seemed appreciative none the less.Once finished, she grasped the vest in her paws with interest. “This armor seems quite lightweight, which is nice, weight is often an issue that causes us to forgo armor, since heavy armor would hurt our running ability.” Farva remarks. “Also the sheer amount of pockets seems quite excessive, what do you need all these for?”
“Well for starters it's currently missing these '' I hand Farva one of the armor plates which she looks over. “That is a depleted Naquadria ceramic composite plate. It’s designed to stop bullet impacts and dissipate energy weapon blasts. It slots into that chest compartment in the front and back of your armor.”
“This isn't quite what Id imagine for the armor of your kind”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Well judging by your ships I would have imagined you would put more emphasis on defense Your predatory nature would make you less likely to run away from conflict allowing for more encompassing armor to cover more than just your chest, since you have less need to run.”
She would put it like that.
“Well there are a number of reasons for that, a lot to do with those excess pockets you mentioned. For starters you will not be carrying the same amount of gear that the standard infantry unit would normally be carrying, we are preparing you for a quick in and out op. Normally us expedition teams need to be deployed into unknown territory for extended periods of time, we need to carry everything we might need with us from food, bullets, weapons, to comms gear, sensors, repelling equipment etc. The weight from all that gear adds up fast; In order to stay sufficiently mobile and combat effective; we only carry enough armor to protect our vitals, head and torso, anything else can hopefully be patched up by a field medic.”
Tielc gave his piece as well. “It is important to know when to run both towards and aways from one's foes, not every battle can be won through strength alone, but by strategy and cunning. Being able to reposition oneself quickly is therefore highly advantageous”
Farva seemed to freeze at Teal'c's statement, not out of fear I think, she instead had a distant look in her eye. To snap her out of her slump I handed her a standard ballistic helmet.
Seeming to get the idea she looked at it oddly and tried it on. It confirmed to her head shape decently well but depressed her ears to either side of her head, kind of resembling what one might imagine a sad bunny rabbit to look like “I don't think this will be something I can bring with me” she said ” I can't use ear signals and this will muffle my hearing.”
“Why don’t you keep it on for the time being, I think any extra hearing protection might be useful considering what we are about to try next.” I hand Farva some ballistic ear protectors, slightly modified and somewhat ramshackle. “One of the corporals worked closely with Nurse Fila to get an idea for safe decibels levels for your kind, we were also able to get these earbuds molded to fit into your ear canal better”
Farva took them and slipped them in. “These are a bit uncomfortable, what do I need these for?”
“You'll need them for this” I say as I unsnap the clasps on the weapons case revealing its contents.
The content seems to capture Farva’s interest, getting a slight tail wave.
“Okay So this here is a p90, It carries a 50 round top loading magazine of teflon coated armor piercing ordnance. With a cyclical rate of fire of 900 rounds per minute.”
Farvas ears perk up at this. “This seems like an efficient design, I take it these are a flashlight and laser sight for accuracy?” She asked, pointing to the top of the weapon.
“Yes we also have holographic and acog optics which will help line up targets from farther away.” I look on as Farva picks up the weapon and inspects it, testing the weight as I note that it will weigh a fair bit more once loaded. But she doesn't seem to be struggling with the weight. I can't help but notice good firearm safety as well, she keeps her finger well off the trigger and takes care to keep her weapon pointed aways from anyone else.
“This seems like a solid design but I'm not sure how useful those weapon optics would be, as they are not designed for my side facing eyes”
“I'm sure our master at arms can figure something out, why don't we give it a test fire first tho, before we send it off to make adjustments.” I instruct her on how to load the weapon and turn the safety off. I warn her of the sound it makes. And while definitely taken aback by the recoil and sound at first, she quickly gets the hang of it, she has some respectable shot groupings in both single fire and in short bursts. And keeps the rounds reasonably centered while firing in full auto.
She did a whole lot better than I would have initially suspected given her performance in the hanger bay a day before.
“The rate of fire seems useful” Farva spoke “This would be useful for our soldiers, our accuracy falters when we are panicked, and the increased shot count should guarantee some hits based on volume of fire alone” she finished with a dejected expression.
She quickly places the weapon back in its case, as if it burned to touch.” I don't know if I should be armed for this mission, at least not with that weapon, I don't want to miss and hit one of you in the back!”
“What? Nonsense, you are a great shot, and this is just a precaution in case we get separated or flanked and need some covering fire. If our guys are doing their job right you shouldn't need to fire a single round anyways.”
Captain Farva’s breathing started to hasten, earlier I might have thought it was fear, but I was starting to get an idea of what the captain's issues were. I’ve seen this before.
“I.. I can’t be trusted with this responsibility, every time I am left in charge of something, every time people put their lives in my paws I ....”
“Farva, don’t you start with me now you hear.” I said sternly, swiftly capping off her inevitable spiral of self doubt.
“But.. no.. you don’t understand”
Stopping her again I spoke. “But nothing, what happened before on that ship, and back at that colony is in the past. I don’t know your whole situation, but from what I have gathered from the crew It was nothing good. You feel responsible and it's eating away at you, and frankly it doesn’t matter if that's true or not. Accidents happen, people make mistakes, and when that happens we need to learn, take those lessons to heart, and don't let it stop us from helping people in the present. If you let guilt, or fear of mistakes stop you, then bad guys have already won, all without having to have fired a shot”
Farva is quiet for a short time, I was hoping I got through to her, I'm not the best and pep talks and this certainly wasn’t your typical weapons demo, if only everyones could go as smoothly as Ronan’s.
Farva spoke quietly, arms pressed up against her chest, she looked so sad, defeated, and small. Well more than usual anyways. “We can't be strong like you humans, we are too emotional and when we are scared we run away or we lock up and...”
“And that is clearly not the case with you captain Farva” Teal’c finally reentered the conversation having heard enough. “You have shown courage with every action you have taken so far, your actions have saved the lives of many of your crew, every time you have been threatened you acted not just to protect yourself but others as well. You attempted to contend with beings many times your size without even thinking about it, all in the effort to protect others, and this is only in the time we have known you, this speaks nothing of your actions over the colony. You are a warrior of admirable courage Captain Farva, your self doubt is unearned.”
A single tear rolled down Farva’s eyes which she quickly wiped away. “That was very nice of you to say, but I'm not brave like you say, I was terrified out of my mind the whole time.”
Teal’c looked puzzled. “I did not call you brave, I said you were courageous.”
Farva shot back with the little venlil one up one down ear flick I had very quickly learned was confusion.” I'm confused you just said brave twice”
“Hmm it appears your language does not contain the word I am using, I apologize I am not used to speaking through a translator” Teal’c relented “ There are two words I am using admittedly in slightly different forms, bravery and courage. Bravery or to be brave is to lack fear, to not be afraid to begin with. Courage tho, Is a trait far more admirable. Courage is to be afraid, to have fear, to worry about one's own mortality and personal safety. It is to acknowledge risk, danger, to feel fear, but to act in spite of it.”
“Had I not met your kind before I would have thought predators don't feel fear.”
“Everyone fears feel Farva, It is how we overcome it that determines our worth as warriors”
Teal’c picks up the p90 and returns it to Farvas hands.
“Your people need a warrior Farva, a warrior who protects the innocent and guides the lost to safety. You have shown how collected you can be in the heat of battle, You have already proven your worth in our eyes Farva, now you must do the same in your own. The greatest enemy lies not without” Teal’c places his hand firmly on the venlil’s chest “But within”.
After Action Report - Venlil Colonial Defense Force
Subject : Chief Engineer Donu
I fiddled with my holopad, Its small surface area proving to be a consistent source of annoyance in my current endeavor. Gone was the large workspace afforded to me by my holotable back in my office. Instead I had to work with the scaled down portable holotablet I was just fortunate enough to have strapped to my person when I was beamed away from our last ship. I was stuck with its smaller keyboard and slower rendering speeds.
An annoyed smooth skin alien looked over my shoulder at my device, attached to it was a jury rigged fiber optic cable, slotted into a terran silicon to crystal patch cable, which would convert the electrical signals broadcasted by my tablet into a bandwidth that the terrans crystalline based computers; which they used for highly complex tasks like hyperdrive and transporter systems; could use, and then It was patched again in a even stranger connector to patch into the odd asgard computer stones.
All in all it looked like someone tried to plug a regular computer into some crystal construct like you would find in a fantasy holonovel, and again plugged that into a harchen heat rock sauna lounge. Finally branching out from this conglomeration was a simple copper based wire that connects to a computer terminal at which currently sat the late Doctor Rodney Mckay. A title upon initially hearing led me to believe he was a medical doctor, which led to a flurry of medical questions that he had absolutely no means of answering.
While this odd alien nomenclature was interesting, what intrigued me more was his actual area of expertise, theoretical astrophysics, as well as a number of other diverse specialties and fields. Not to mention not only was he a great scientist who had he been raised in the more civilized portion of this galaxy, would have knowledge and aptitude that would put him alongside some of Aafas greatest minds, but he was also an engineer without peer, at least in this galaxy. His interactions with general Samantha Carter hinted at her possibly being his match if not more. For a species that was supposed to glorify violence the decision to have a scientist be arguably the most senior member of what was by their admission a military vessel spoke to their commitment to knowledge and understanding, a very noble prey-like goal.
I looked warily at the lines of code at my screen, the asguard translation program had earlier scanned our ship and was able to parse written languages, but complex files, like images and 3d design schematics were harder to encode and decode from our perspective systems. As is stands we have 3 completely separate computer architectures, the asguard can talk to human computers and the venlil computers can talk to the asguard computers, It sounds like we would have everything we need to get a human C.A.D schematic into a venlil holotablet right? Wrong! And you're stupid for entertaining such a idiotic notion! Parsing text from raw binary is relatively straight forward, you're just looking for patterns, repeating bit combinations that might infer letters and then iterating them over millions of times looking for patterns, letters, words, and then with a bit of help from some undecoded analog audio transmission, spoken language. This is a far cry from actual procedural communication protocols, the ones that allow for file transfers, exactly what we needed if we were to get Rodney's redesigned part schematics into a format and medium that can be plugged into a suitable fabricator. Assuming one still exists, which I can reasonably assume it does.
Speaking of which, I have just made something of a breakthrough. For upon my screen appears a simple geometric hydrogen cube, we’re talking vertices, planes, material data, everything we need for a usable design file.
I let out an excited pent up yip, the culmination of hours of frustrating software integration work. Unfortunately I startled Rodney, who lets out a panicked gasp and clutches his chest pelts with one of his paws.
“Oh god…..” He gasps, pointing at me “Please.. don’t do that”
“Sorry!” I say a bit meekly. I slowly approach him so as to not make him unnecessarily uncomfortable and show him my work.
“I got the file exchange set up, all we need from you is to finish any modifications to your part, upload them to my holopad, and then we can print away at any class 3 or above fabricator we can scrounge up on Brayga colony.”
“Ok.. um.. got it, I'm almost done i’m just you know” He points a lone grasping appendage at his screen,”Running some simulations, making sure everything is up to spec.” keeping his response kurt. “Sorry for freaking out there.”
I nod my head in the human display of affirmation and return to my workstation to further bug check my work, to test potentially problematic edge cases for when he finishes. Tho Rodney's continued odd behavior intruded on my thoughts.
I should have felt empowered, being able to intimidate this ‘massive beast’, but I didn't. I didn't like being feared, his people have been nice to me, Rodney himself courteous to a fault and desperate for positive attention.
I thought I could expect predators to be fearless but that clearly wasn't the case, rodney was fearful, nervous, had I not known better I would say defective, and while it annoyed his crew, they didn't berate him for it, or attempt to assert dominance, they encouraged it even with placating words and tried to help him through it, they encouraged and supported him like a proper herd, even if sometimes it took the form of what the human would call a playful ribbing. I supposed I could help him as well.
I approached him again, careful to make my approach known to him, making sure to approach from within his limited field of vision. He looks up at me with a wide eyed glare, had I not known him I might have assumed it was hunger, but I did and knew it to be concern.
“Uh high Donu.. um whats up?”
“Why are you afraid of us rodney?”
“Wa-What, me afraid?” he gives out a panicked laugh ”uh no no, I'm not afraid, you know just a bit weirded out I'm just getting used to you all, it's not a fear thing it's a a…. Just getting used to new aliens thing, ask Hermirod we went through this whole song and dance right buddy”
Hermirod furrowed his brow and gave an irritated sigh from across the room.
I reached out to take Rodney by the paw.
His whole body flinched at my mere touch, I quickly withdrew my paw.
“Oh.. um.. I didn't…”
“Rodney! It's okay, your crew doesn’t seem to care when you show fear, and neither do I. Why are you afraid of us? You are almost twice our size and surely double our strength, most venlil would scream and run in terror at the mere sight of you. What's wrong?”
Rodney let out a sigh. “Oh its, we don't have to talk about this, I can deal with this, I deal with scary situations all the time, it's fine, I'll be fine.”
“Rodney, my people are a very emotional, empathic people, we are open with our feelings and with our fear, and the fear of the one can affect the herd, please let me help you. I don’t know what to expect from your society but I promise I wont judge you for your fear or emotions, I mean look at many of my crew mates, we are no one to judge”
Rodney shot back “You didn't seem to be so bothered”
“I’m too old to care, I was about to retire, hell I was about to die as far as I knew, Brayga colony was supposed to be a quiet place to lay back, work on some hobbies, plant a garden and pester the young men of my colony until I either dropped dead of boredom or got lucky” I joked.
That seemed to raise Rodney's mood somewhat. He sighed and seemingly relented.
“It’s… a dumb story, I don't even know why it affected me so much, I come from a place on earth called Canada, people don't usually believe me when I say I am from there, us Canadians are notoriously friendly and I guess I haven’t exactly filled that mold for a lot of my life, but hey I'm working on it, people like me, I have lots of friends back at Atlantis” He says the last sentence in a way as if it isn't me he's trying to convince.
“I'm sure you do, Rodney, You seem like quite the charming individual when you're not cowering!”
“Ha ha thanks, maybe you could come and visit sometime. Tell that to doctor Becket, really nice guy, smart man, he would love to meet you, he loves investigating new species. But back on topic, oh boy, so me and my sister Jeannie were on a family trip to rural Vancouver to visit my grandpa's farm, he kept a lot of goats, not for eating or anything, they were essentially pets that he would use for milk”
“Wait hold on? You drink milk from other animals! Do your females not produce enough milk for their young?”
“Oh um no, we just sort of drink it or ferment it into cheese!”
“Ferment? You mean spoil?
“Yeh”
I reeled from this plasma blast of a statement, I like any right minded venlil had a number of nightmares about being an arxur’s cattle before, especially when I first learned about those things in primary school, but never once had it crossed my mind that we could be used for something so weird. What the speh was I supposed to do with that information?
“Maybe you should get back on topic”
“Yeh sorry about that uh.. Anyways the momma goat had just had a litter of babies, and their real cute when their little, so late in the day when my grandpa was asleep we snuck out to the pens so we can play with the little baby goats, our grandpa told us not to but you now how kids are.”
At this I think back to a young Nyan, as I teach him the inner working of the hyperdrive, I tell him he’s not cleared yet to operate in this engine compartment alone, but I could tell from the occasional caught black hairs and dropped writing implements, there had been a number of curious unauthorized expeditions into its inner workings, he didn't really listen either.
“My sister as always was trying to be the voice of reason, wanting to take it slow. If I was paying attention I might have noticed the angry moma goat who didn’t appreciate the strange human messing with her children.”
The color seemed to drain from his face.
“I uh…” He began to stutter again ”I screamed, a lot, it was rather undignified, she ran right at me, thank god it wasn't a male goat, one with horns, I tired to run but I was hit in the back and knocked over and kicked real good in the head, like wake up in the vet clinic a quarter mile down the road kind of bad”
“This goat was a prey animal?”
“That would be what your kind focuses on”
“Oh sorry”
“Anyways It seems dumb but I have just never been good with animals since then, especially ones that look like you; no offense; I'm getting better but when I first saw you guys in the hangar bay, I was just that dumb kid again, getting in way over my head, scared for my life. I guess there is something to be said about childhood trauma. I really should be over this, I'm getting better with it I swear it’s just”
I take his paw again, he doesn't flinch this time.
“I'm a venlil, a prey animal, I know fear, I know what it is to live in fear, It rattles your brain, it turns your paws to wet grains. It takes great strength to overcome it, to push it aside just long enough to protect the herd. Your herd relies on you Rodney and you are doing a great job in spite of your fear, in spite of having to work with those you fear. You have achieved intellectual feats that rival the greatest minds of the federation and all that while struggling with a traumatic experience. Fear isn’t dumb and there is nothing wrong with you for feeling it.”
“Thank you” Rodney says “That means a lot, I won't be like forever I promise, I just need some time.”
“We will laugh about this someday,” I assured. “Nothing as big and intelligent as you should be afraid of anything”
“Are you calling me fat?” Rodney exclaimed with fake offense.
We both chuckled.
My kind words had resulted in a more upright posture, and a more cheerful demeanor from the human, almost like when I congratulated Nyan on his work, and it got me a look at that happy snarl of his, that I was starting to grow quite fond of.

Oh wow! I get to write a report for this mission! I never get to write reports, Donu says they're too boring, but there’s so many interesting things going on all the time. Sometimes I sneakily write my own! Just for fun of course, nobody sees them, which is probably for the best as I sometimes get excited and embellish them slightly. One of the reports I wrote was about the time Donu used nothing but a wad of electrical tape, a bottle of high grain venlil alcohol and a pocket knife to repair a venlil medical ship just in time to get out of the way of a big scary space predator, with glowing red eyes and a million tentacles!
Anyways Im not sure If im suppose to write these In present tense first person or past tense. I asked the captain and she said it's whatever so long as I make sure any pertinent dialogues are properly quoted(“”).
“Nobody usually reads these things anyways.” She said, but this one is surely going to be so exciting, who could look away!
I mean who's gonna scoff at a chance to read about friendly predators from another dimension! A dimension of friendly predators who give warm head scratches and hand out yummy strayu not strayu treats called donuts, that are somehow fluffier than strayu, and have a nice moisture to them. I asked for the recipe but Samantha said we wouldn't have the ingredients back on Venili prime to make them, and Teal'c said the recipe is an old family secret. Its weird predators would be so protective of their plant snacks.
There are so many weird things about these predators, they have nurturing instincts that make them find us cute. They stay perfectly balanced even if they don’t have tails, swinging their arms and body all over the place to keep upright like a lopsided gyroscope, it's pretty funny looking!
They also wear artificial pelts all the time, which I thought was weird, I thought maybe the ships temperature was set by the angry gray alien since he’s the only crew member beside the venlil who walks around naked all the time, maybe he had a fit when it was to warm, and the humans obliged him cause they were worried they would make him even angrier, and wore clothes to make up for the cold. I thought this made sense, a lot of their technology does seem to come from the Asguard, maybe he has more say in the goings on of the ship because of that. But apparently humans just like wearing pelts all the time. They feel uncomfortable without them and don’t like it if you try to remove them or look up their upper artificial pelts they call shirts.
The humans are so weird, I don’t even have to embellish my reports to make it more interesting. Like that time with the big tentacled space predator. That may sound real compared to this stuff but it Isn't, Ha! I bet you fell for it at first, hook line and sinker! Like the humans would say. I think I used that saying right, I'm not sure what it means, but Shepard brought it up when he was telling a story about the wraith.
The humans are so nice, instead of exterminating their predators they try to cure them! Their doctors are working to modify the wraith so they don't have to eat humans anymore, so they can be friendly predators too.
Anyways I should probably get to the actual report part of this report. Farva says I should start after I went off with Samantha to work on some special astrophysics equations she said I would be good at. I kind of wanted to go with Donu to help Rodney get the new parts they needed, or Farva to help rescue our people, but the humans and even the angry gray alien got really weird when Farva mentioned taking me on the mission. Samantha seemed to want me to help her really badly so I didn’t mind. Samantha says I have the most important part to our mission. She's teaching me about how humans communicate through subspace, and about stellar drift equations. We are working on what she calls the exit strategy.

2024.05.16 23:11 Weathers_Writing They call Silicon Valley the tech capitol of the world. They're wrong

I won't disclose its actual location, so if that's why you're here, sorry to disappoint. It's not time for that yet. However, I do think it's time to start getting the word out. I've noticed an increase in what I'll call "Antennas" lately, or people who can detect cross-planar phase shifts. Without getting into all the math (some of which I don't even know), this is basically a phenomenon which refers to entropy seeping into our universe from other realms or universes or whatever you want to call it. Simply put, people think our universe is a closed system to entropy, meaning that the disorder of any variable in our universe can only increase or decrease in direct proportion to other variables in that same system (the universe). Under this precept, we can establish rules like the Laws of Thermodynamics, and for most people, they're effective. But not for Antennas.
Put another way, if you throw a bunch of bouncy balls into a box, there are a number of different configurations that the balls could take on, with different speeds and magnitudes. You can calculate all of those if you have the right numbers. Now let's say you throw in another set of balls that you don't consider in your calculations of the initial set. Well, then you're not going to get an accurate picture of what's happening. Most people only see the first set and calculate based on that, but some people can see two, three, four or more sets.
You'll understand the concept better when I tell you the story, but I wanted to give you a primer on an important concept that will help you understand why this place, which I'll call "Area X", exists, and what the goals of the people who work there are.
Also note that I'm going to be using the alias "Trent" moving forward. Please refer to me as such in any direct messages.
***
Eighteen years ago I started working as an independent Home Inspector. I dropped out of community college after my first semester (not because I didn't find some of the subjects interesting, but because deference to a man or woman has never been my style) and started working some odd jobs. I did construction work for a couple years, then plumbing. I even drove a garbage truck for six months. I've always found pleasure in using my hands, and getting dirty was never a problem for me. Still, having a boss really dragged ass, so I spent my free time working on creating my own business. It took a few years and lots of savings, but I finally managed to get basic set of Home Inspection equipment: Tyvek coveralls, a cheap half-face respirator, voltage & AFCI/GFCI testers, CO2 and radon monitors, an IR camera, and telescoping mirrors in addition to the boots, safety glasses, electric gloves, ladder, and toolkits I already had on hand.
My buddy at the time was in the business, but he was moving off to the coast, so he helped me get set up and even introduced me to some of his clients. Of course, by that time I had already gotten my State license, but I still was a bit apprehensive to work with insurance agencies. I thought I could make a living working independently, inspecting for mold or sizing up a house for a prospective buyer. Eventually, though, I realized I should probably take every job available to me.
Easing into the business went about as well as it could have. The clients my friend referred to me were very satisfied with my work, and I was able to retain them. Then, in order to increase my reach, I hired someone on Fiverr to build a website for my company which led to a marked increase in traffic and conversions. About six months through, I began to get on a first-name basis with the boys and girls down down at Allstate and Progressive, and they fed me some of the bigger cases. In fact, I got so booked by year's end that I had to hire someone to help manage my schedule and the Excel spreadsheet with all my finances. I capped off a successful year with a 5-star Google rating and a trip to Ireland to visit some family and friends and get piss drunk. When I got back, it was the grindstone all over again, until the summer when I discovered… well, you'll see.
First off, I want to say that I was never one to believe in the paranormal. I grew up watching the movies and hearing the ghost stories round the campfire like every other kid, but it never struck a chord with me. If I can't touch it or see it or hear it, does it really exist? Probably not. So don't go thinking this was a scared man seeing his own shadow. That being said, I had this sense that something was off about this house when I parked along the curb and looked through a large window, perhaps two times the size of my van, to a dingy, dark foyer.
The entire neighborhood was stacked with upper-middle class domiciles, though it seemed like only two thirds of them were occupied, mostly by professionals who commuted to the City every weekday, and the rest were empty. As a man who understands real estate, to say this was strange would be an understatement. Still, I had no problem appraising the mini-mansion for a couple of newlyweds looking to enter the community. I did some research on the property ahead of time, and it seems that it was owned by a couple of old timers who had gone off the grid some time ago. The water and electric bill were both unpaid dating back to 2004 (it was June of '06 now). The bank had repo'd the house (which only had about 100k left on it) and held it for a year and a half before putting it back on the market. I tried to find out more about the old couple who vanished, but there was nothing in the news.
I stepped out of the van in my coveralls and grabbed my suitcase which had my mask, gloves, and eye protection in it. I liked to do a preliminary survey first, running an eye test on the exterior then interior before bringing out the big guns (that way I could identify the areas where I think there could be problems instead of running a metal detector over the whole damn ocean seaboard). I was about to do just that when the window caught my eye again. It felt uncharacteristic of me to be so occupied with this window, but I detoured to the front porch and peeked inside anyway.
Most of the furniture had already been moved out, meaning all that was left was a single three-seater couch, a couple candlesticks on the fireplace mantle, a pristine chandelier overtop a dining room table, and the kitchenware: an oven, gas stovetop, marble countertops, and an island. I could see into the living room very clearly with the afternoon light, but the dining room was dim enough that there were a few structures I couldn't quite make out in the distance. One of them appeared to be some kind of china cabinet or bookshelf—I figured it was the former considering where it was located. The other shadow looked kind of like a grandfather clock. Or at least that's what I thought until it moved.
When I say it "moved", I don't mean to say that it picked up and walked away. If you're not familiar with the Necker Cube, I suggest you search it up, because that kind of illusion is the best way to describe what I saw. At first I was seeing the grandfather clock in a certain way—pushed into the corner of the room—and the next second my vision "corrected" and it was maybe five feet to the left of its former position. I shook my head and looked again and saw the grandfather clock in its second orientation, standing in the center of the room against the wall. I figured I was just seeing things, but even so I spent a little extra time dawdling around the Egress window, taking notes, and delaying the interior inspection.
When I finally grew a pair and went inside, I walked straight to the dining room. Sure enough, the grandfather clock was stowed away in the corner of the room. I spent a couple minutes watching it with my pencil and travel notebook out. I'm the kind of guy that likes to collect hard data when the chips are down. Unfortunately, the clock apparently already had enough fun and was content with sweating me. Oh, well.
I fitted my pencil behind my ear and pocketed my travel notebook, then flipped the rest of the first floor lights on and completed my prelim. I concluded that everything was pretty standard. If anything, the house was in better shape than I'd expect considering it presumably hasn't been lived in for a couple years. I say "presumably" because one can never count out squatters, even during those times. Mainly I was expecting more dust build up and cobwebs than there were. Perhaps someone from the department had come by recently. It's unlikely, but possible.
I did the same check upstairs and it came back mostly clean. There was a bit of staining near the attic I wanted to check for mold. Based on its color, it was probably just a minor case of Aspergillus, but better safe than sorry. Then I got to the basement, and, well, let's just count out the idea of anyone dropping by. I don't know what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't what I found.
The first thing that caught my eye was the long, slender body of a birch tree lying pale and dead across a large portion of the even larger unfinished basement's cement flooring. I had to do a double take to make sure I wasn't dreaming, but, yep, there it was. Its crown was sealed up in the wall with only its trunk hanging out, which made me think of those medieval pillory devices which locked up people's heads and arms. Then confetti-scattered around the tree and all over the basement floor was a minefield of broken glass and ceramic tangled up with a set of random objects. And when I say random, I mean random. There was an unfurled Somali flag (the blue one with a single star in the center), some packaged drinks and condiments branded with all sorts of different languages (I could only make out Gaelic and Chinese or Japanese, I couldn't quite tell), a broken dome-shaped security camera, an otoscope (the thing the doc uses to check your ears), Hot Wheels cars (okay that one isn't so strange), and the list goes on.
At that moment, I wasn't freaked out or disgusted. I was more or less just confused. I started walking through the rubble, trying to avoid the sharp fragments but pretty confident that my steel toed boots would crush most the pieces anyway, when I heard a clink just up ahead. I was able to spot the coin in time, just before it jingled to a halt atop an old Life magazine. I picked it up and noted right away its oval shape and bronze color—clearly not American made. I tried reading it, but not only was the language not English, it appeared to be so old that most of the lettering had been filed down. I looked up at the ceiling to see if it dropped from a shelf, but there was nothing that could have been holding the coin. I considered for a moment, looking around at the other junk, and had the crazy idea that maybe all this stuff just appeared here. I popped the coin in my pocket and headed back to the van when I stopped by the tree and realized something. It wasn't a birch tree—it was a palm tree. I just didn't realize because of how ashy and decayed the bark was.
Now at this point you might think I've been acting a little nonchalant for such a strange occurrence, and I don't blame you, but if you're gonna stick around with me that's just something you're gonna have to get used to. I guess I was just born with a screw loose, but I really don't scare easily, and I tend to look at everything pragmatically. If you dig deep enough, you'll always find another plausible explanation. That being said, I do want to get to the part about Area X, so let me give you the rundown on what I learned about this basement.
I ended up trekking back to the van and picking up my gear. I was no longer running the routine inspection, obviously, but I figured I might as well throw 30 thousand dollars of scanning equipment at whatever the fuck anamoly existed in that basement. Most of it came back negative. There was a bit higher-than-usual EM interference as picked up on the voltmeters, but nothing that screamed danger close. Still, it was enough for me to set up my volt testers and IR camera while muddling through the rest of the junk. I won't bore you with another list of items, but I did find one thing of value: a diamond necklace. And not just any diamond necklace, it was one of those Queen-wearing, multi-row, big-jeweled necklaces like out of some Historical Fiction movie from the thirties. I almost didn't pocket it because I'm used to expensive items being owned by someone… someone who might want it back. But I figured if there was ever a place the finder's keeper's rule applied, it was probably in this Quantum graveyard.
7 O'clock rolled around and I hadn't eaten. I'm a pretty bulky guy, carrying my share of both muscle and fat, and most people think that means I need to eat a ton but that's really not the case. Mostly I just get dehydrated easily, especially in the summer. That said, I was bordering on famished territory and considered heading out for a bite when I heard another sound. The first thing I did was check my scanners, and sure enough the voltage needle was fully spun to the right side of the dial. EM interference. Then I went to see what had dropped. I was able to pick the object out pretty quickly since I had spent the last 6 hours staring at the mosaic of a basement floor. It was a silver briefcase, like one of those out of a crime novel, and it was cracked open.
I had this sense then that I was standing at a precipice, and if I opened the briefcase and looked inside, I wouldn't be able to stop whatever would come afterwards. Part of me deep down knew that I was just that type of guy that had to know, and maybe this was my Hamlet moment where it would be a trait gone a step too far. But then again I didn't really believe in any of that sentimental bullshit, so I opened the briefcase.
The gun surprised me a little, but not as much as the piece of paper laid atop a case file reading in large black font, "FIND ME". I expected the envelope to have some missing person file in it, but instead there were all these schematics and blueprints for some kind of device. Whatever it was, it was pretty massive. Some of the lengths were hundreds of meters long. And what's more strange is based on the blueprint's locale, it appeared to be underground. I looked back through the pages a couple times, then checked the note—nothing strange there. The gun appeared to be a simple glock. I was no gun expert, but I had been to the range pretty regularly with my construction buddies, so I got used to the feel of a pistol and rifle and some of the different names; however, I realized pretty quickly it wasn't your standard glock when I couldn't find mag-release. That's when I noticed how light the gun felt. I tried to chamber a round, but again, there was no hammer. What the hell kind of gun was this?
I ended up throwing everything back in the briefcase, including the necklace, coin, and a few Koozies I found that were branded with one of my favorite sports teams (never let an opportunity go to waste). I put up all my shit back in the van and spun over to a local burger joint, got my fill, and went home. I made sure to draft an email to the prospective buyers, telling them the house had several patches of black mold and a bit of a rat problem before drifting off to sleep. Although I really didn't do much of that.
When I woke up, I took a cold shower and downed a can of Reign, then commuted to my gym and got a lift and some sauna time in before making the trip back to the house. I brought some extra supplies with me for some experiments I cooked up while not sleeping the previous night.
First, I had two camcorders set up on a couple tripods in either corner of the basement. I wanted clear footage of these mystery objects spawning in. Then I set up a voltmeter in a similar fashion, but I had a wire extending out of it on a circuit which fed to an alarm that would blare when the reading was over 250 volts. Upstairs, I rearranged some of the furniture so that the small number of tables, chairs, clock, cabinets, and other little pillows or vases I could find were scattered across the living room, dining room, and kitchen. Then I pulled up a lawn chair to the front porch window and waited.
I didn't have to wait long though. In about a minute, I started to notice some of the objects moving. It was strange. When a few of them would shift simultaneously, it was like looking at a holographic card that would change shape depending on where your eyes were in relation to the image. Every time I saw a shift, I felt an awkward feeling in my eyes. They went blurry for a fraction of a second, then there was a twinge of pain, as if my brain couldn't handle the contradictory stimulus. It didn't get more crazy than that though—until the alarm went off.
I had cracked open the small rectangular window in the basement to the side of the house so I would hear it. It took four hours and several strange stares from passersby walking their dogs before it rang, so I was a bit lost in my thoughts, but when I heard the beep I perked up fast. It lasted for maybe 5 seconds total, but what I saw was truly miraculous. The best way I can describe it is a pool of silver or gray or translucent light emerging in the foreground between me and the objects in the different rooms. A series of twisting tentacles sprouted from the gray octopus-like head and spun in a way that reminded me of that little kids ride at the amusement parks. Then the objects started to "heat up" is the way I describe it. Their position became relative, meaning they were here one second, there another, then they popped out of existence entirely. Suddenly the rooms were all empty, then they were full of things I had never seen before. Then five seconds passed and the octopus vanished and it was back to the same old objects in their usual places.
It took a few minutes to process what I saw, and even then I wasn't sure I really saw it. I went inside and looked around at my distribution of the house's furnishings. They were all there, intact. Then I went downstairs to check the cams. I rewinded a couple minutes and played it back, but there was no flying object to be found. Instead, there was some gray static that lasted half a second and then the object, a kid's treasure chest toy, was there on the ground. But you want to know the really strange part? I rewinded the tape again, and when I watched the footage back, the treasure chest was always there.
I later came to understand that these poppings in-and-out of our reality are only conceivable to a conscious mind that can track the interference patterns—not rote computational instruments. In fact, even most people can't do it (although everyone has at least a slight awareness of it, even if only subconsciously). Plus, locations like the basement of this house are very rare and kept under tight lock. That became obvious to me two days later when, after my normal morning routine, I pulled up to a driveway and curbside filled with unmarked government vehicles. Either bravely or stupidly, I pulled up to a few officers (they were wearing suits in 85 degree weather, so I assumed…) who were idling by the large fence of crime scene tape and asked them what the score was.
"There was a crime," said the short man with a unibrow.
"Oh, is that right? Damn shame. Someone break in? I have a niece who lives nearby, so…"
The man looked at his two compatriots, both of whom were wearing sunglasses and a "get this civilian fuck out of here" expressions. "Oh, yeah," he started in a reassuring tone that was so condescending it would have annoyed anyone except me, "we found a body. We think it was a homicide. Best to keep your kids away from here for a while."
I thumbed the stubble on my chin, my other hand outstretched on the wheel, and considered moving on, but my mouth had other ideas. "That right? But uh, isn't this house vacant? I mean, I don't remember no one living in it."
The short man, now tall with temper, said, "Yeah, some squatters. We think there was a dispute over some drug money. Nothing for you to worry about though, we got it under control. Now if you wouldn't mind moving along, we have a lot of work to do."
Oh, I'm sure you do, I thought, but only said, "Of course, sir, sorry for keeping you from your job." Then I rolled up the window and cruised on, keeping my eyes on the house which slowly diminished in the side-view mirror.
Luckily I had been smart enough to break down my camp and lug home all my equipment each night, so I didn't leave anything incriminating. I didn't move the furniture back, so maybe that would come back to haunt me, but considering the kind of shit going down in that house, I didn't think they would notice.
For any of you wondering about the conclusion of the house story, I went back a couple weeks later after the suits had left and the tape was taken down and confirmed that not only was the basement entirely cleaned out, but it was no longer exhibiting any strange properties. I looked for a story related to the house, maybe a made up murder of some kind, but there was nothing. That bastard lied to me and didn't even bother to cover his story up.
Now, in the aftermath of an event such as this, I really only had one of two options. I could forget it, move on, continue living life. The necklace was surely worth a fortune. I could sell it and have enough to retire, or at least hire enough people and expand my business large enough to retire within ten or so years. Or I could take all that money and invest it in my own PI business with only a single objective: finding out what those people knew, and why they were hiding it.
I think you know me well enough by now to guess which line of reasoning appealed more to me.
***
For the sake of brevity, I'm going to omit most of my encounters along the journey to discovering Area X. There's a lot to tell, and if it appeals to you perhaps I'd be willing to share at a later date, but for now I want to get this part of the story, the more proximal part, out in the open.
Three years ago, I discovered the source of what I'll call "The Receiver". This is the device that was schematized in the documents that I found in the briefcase. What it does is a complex answer, and how it does it is pretty much all speculation, but here's what I've been able to find out: this universe we live in is a node in a network of many other spaces. These spaces exist in higher dimensions that we cannot directly perceive, but using a conceivable analogy, just think about a flower with petals. The petals are these other dimensions which bleed into our world, which is at the center. However, it's not that pretty. We see the physical world through the lens of spacetime: sizes, speeds, etc. These other dimensions don't necessarily have space or time. In fact, what actually exists there, I couldn't say. The only data I have on them is from two sources: correspondence information and server data from the secret agency (which I'll call "the Organization") that keeps this under wraps, and first-hand experience with realms from these other entities, either directly (I experience it) or through the eyes of someone else with the same or greater abilities than I possess.
I referred to these people with abilities earlier as "Antennas", and I will continue to use the term. Antennas really come in three flavors, marked by the strength of their ability: weak Antennas, like me, are able to observe spontaneous interactions between our universe and other dimensions (phase shifts) when there is a strong force of collision like existed in the basement; moderate Antennas may see phase shifts occur at any point, and they usually are able to retain memories from across the different transformations; strong Antennas, and I don't know if they exist yet, but they are able to consciously interact with these other realms and cause phase shifts to occur.
I mentioned that moderate Antennas are able to retain memories from before and after a phase shift. Technically, all Antennas have this ability, but it's about degree. I can recall only very specific instances and without much detail. Moderates are usually able to pick out much more nuanced minutiae. At the lower end of moderate scale, most of those details fade or get fuzzy over time, but for the very strong Antennas, they hold onto almost everything. One other property that scales with strength is interaction with other conscious entities. Only a small percentage of moderates are able to do this. What's interesting is that these entities can possess (yes, like ghosts) people who aren't even antennas, but no one is aware of such possession at this deep of a level. I have several companions now, and only two have had interactions with these otherworldly beings. Not all of them are malevolent, some of them are whimsical or kind, but there are a fair share of demons out there.
Getting back to the point, Area X started as a government funded project in the 70's. At that time, they were focused on a few subjects: Artificial Intelligence, DNA sequencing, and psychedelics. Yes, they were part of the infamous LSD experiments. But they looked at these subjects through a common lens—there was something that the burgeoning tech industry, fueled by the advent of a commercial computer market, was missing. As the tech giants rose in the early 2000's and began to collect mass amounts of data, this other agency was decades ahead in a different metric, although it was completely (and still is) hidden from the public. Their efforts to understand psychedelic experiences led to a formalized method of understanding interactions between multiple realities. They built certain scanning equipment to detect anomalies like the one I found in the basement; although their tools were much more sophisticated and didn't utilize voltage readings. Then they ran tests in these areas. One area in particular is a hot-bed of phase shift interactions. That's where Area X is located (and the Receiver).
The Receiver is a giant electromagnetic orb that has trapped the kind of multi-dimensional energy that causes the phase shifts; since the Organization seized control of the lab, it's effectively become a map of the Earth in relation to these other worlds. For the past twenty or so years, the Organization has been studying this map, using the data big Tech companies have collected to essentially develop a Rosetta Stone for interpreting the meaning of the fluctuations in their scanning equipment. Recently, the public, though going the long way round, was actually pretty close to a breakthrough in this same department until recently when ultra-powerful LLMs surfaced, and the whole world began going down what I'd argue is the wrong rabbit hole of language processing. But I digress.
Area X is essentially a private military base built for defending the most impactful piece of technology ever invented. With the Receiver, the Organization now has the power to essentially predict any and all future outcomes, the only thing holding them back is the limitations of their own scanning equipment which will get better with time. To put it into perspective, the Organization has access to a kind of data allocation tool which in one day can produce over ten thousand times that the Big Data companies combined would be able to filter through in the next decade. You might think, then, that the problem is merely asymmetric power, and that is certainly a concern, but it isn't the main concern. The main issue is that this organization is actively recruiting (and kidnapping) Antennas from around the world in an effort to find or make one of them into a strong Antenna. In other words, they want a subject who is able not only to see the future, but to manipulate it at will.
balance to the world. I've been working on amassing resources, capital, and building my own team, and now I'm ready. You might ask why I'm posting this here. Wouldn't it be better to keep all this secret? Well, yes, it would be. But that's the problem. Nothing is secret anymore. They know about me and the others, and if I don't make a move, they will. In a way, this is a letter directly to the organization that I know, and I'm coming.
In a different way, I wanted to release this information to the public. There are lots of people out there waking up and realizing that the world they experience is not the one others experience. If you think you might be an Antenna, don't be afraid—you have a special gift that can be controlled. If you want more details on how to control it, or if you're interested in my mission, don't be afraid to reach out. This hasn't always been my life's work, but it is now.
At least until I die.

2024.05.16 23:10 Weathers_Writing They call Silicon Valley the tech capitol of the world.

2024.05.14 23:39 MJMiner Weapon overhaul

As a veteran of HD1 and the first galactic war I am absolutely appalled at the state of the game’s current arsenal. There are some fun and unique weapons here and there but most of them just feel redundant or terrible. Nowhere is this more visible that the AR, SMG, and DMR lineup. Here is a rework I’m proposing to high command ti ensure we are given proper tools to ensure the safety and spread of managed democracy.
Gun Rebalance and additions ARs Class Role: Rifles are designed to put holes through targets, and they need to reflect this role better. All rifles with Light penetration have been upgraded to be Light armor defeating. This means that while weapons with Light AP will damage light armor, they won’t always fully damage it. While rifles with light armor defeating fully negate light armor and deal full damage to it.
Liberator, 65DMG, Excellent ergonomics, the best weapon for firing on the move, +1 mag Role: Extremely easy to control and ideal for new players or veterans looking for something reliable. Capable of 45/45/4.5/ delivering 45 rounds at 45 meters in 4.5 seconds on target with no effort. Lore: High command has started production on upgrade kits for our standard rifles to improve it’s handling. Liberators now come with a vertical foregrip and a new muzzle brake to better control the weapon.
AP Liberator, 70 DMG, +5 rounds, Slower reload, 23 recoil, bad ergonomics, Uses AR scope Role: This Frankenstein of a gun is not for new players, uncomfortable recoil, and unfriendly handling in exchange for uncompromising stopping power. Terrible when firing on the move, with significant muzzle climb. But it provides rapid armor-piercing fire to those who can control it. Lore: The Penetrator started its life as a converted liberator modified to better penetrate armor. However there was no standard for how this would be achieved, so the conversion differs from regiment to regiment. Typically it involved sawing off a diligence barrel and converting it into a squeeze bore to increase velocity at the cost of terminal ballistics without using new ammunition. High Command has now realized the potential usefulness of a standardized conversion for its service rifle. Fabricator schematics have been published for new components and manuals for a consistent conversion. As part of project Ironbreaker, an initiative to outfit soldiers with better AP weapons, Production has begun on a variety of new ammo for the weapon which is much more powerful. The new 5.77mm Talon round generates 3x more chamber pressure than the liberator. The weapon itself has a new chamber and a properly machined barrel, made from surplus diligence rifles. The new AP liberator is also outfitted with a standard rifle optic, Punisher pump grip for a vertical grip, 35 round magazine, and a grey and red color scheme to denote its new changes.
Adjudicator, 90-100 DMG, 720 RPM, 30 recoil, Burst fire, uses the DMR scope Role: Battle rifle, Ideal for long-range combat, Semi-auto for small targets or precise shooting, Burst fire for large targets or close combat. Sluggish ergonomics but surprisingly controllable. Lore: Designed to replace liberator rifles on specific fronts where armored enemies are more common, the adjudicator was met with mixed success. The weapon proved to be reliable, powerful, and accurate but failed to fully replace the liberator in an assault rifle capacity. However, the 17th Helldivers regiment came up with a brilliantly effective modification. The outfitted the weapon with a reciprocating barrel shroud and a burst fire mode to turn the rifle into a long-range killing machine. With a surplus of Adjucator parts piling up from the weapon’s failure, High command has made this modification the new factory standard for all Adjucator rifles. The added weight and complexity in exchange for what has been reported as a 50% increase in accuracy seemed to be a fair trade.
Tenderizer, 840RPM, 75-round drum, 12 recoil, 4 mags, Terrible reload, Okay moving accuracy Role: IAR, ideal for laying down sustained fire on targets, can mow down multiple targets quickly. Low magazine count and high RoF make this weapon prone to running out of ammo. Lore: A new development to supplant the more expensive and time-consuming liberator rifles for SEAF army troopers, the Tenderizer was an unwelcome addition. It was heavier, bulkier, and awkward to handle. However, the increased bulk made it easy to control during sustained fire and it was very reliable under this strain. Troops began jury rigging drum magazines to use it as light machine guns. With a sizeable surplus of the liberator’s 5.77mm ammo, High Command began testing a designated IAR (Infantry Automatic Rifle) variant for helldivers use. This variant was an instant success providing individual hell divers with team-level firepower in a rifle-sized package.
Blackout(New), 85DMG, 420RPM, 24 round mag, 8 mags, superb moving accuracy, Silenced Role: Ideal for stealthy missions, the blackout deals very high damage at close range, while enabling the user to remain undetected from nearby patrols. Not effective vs armor Lore: Developed for Blackguard operatives, the Blackout is an integrally suppressed rifle created in response to the rising automaton threat. Veterans of Maevelon Creek petitioned High command to develop a new rifle, able to quietly eliminate bots while still being effective against devestators.
Yari(New), 45DMG, 1400RPM burst, 900RPM salvo, 36 Round magazine, 10 mags, AP Role: Prototype rifle with lightweight Sabot ammunition, fires a 3-round hyperburst and a 6-round salvo. Exceptional ammo efficiency and power at range lacks close combat ability.
DMRs(Classwide rework) Role: DMRs are designed to put rounds where rounds need to go while also being able to be used alongside assault rifles in a firefight. In Helldivers DMRs take an unconventional role of being viable against light target while alos enabling the user to defeat larger enemies like devestators and bile spewers at long range. To start, DMRs have a new bonus, DMRs deal +75% extra weak point damage (Headshots) and deal 10% more damage per point of AP they have over the target region. So they do extra damage if they hit the soft unarmored bits as well as on headshots. They also receive 50% less recoil while prone to better provide accuracy at range. DMRs are for the methodical sharpshooter who prefers to pick off targets at a distance instead of charging in, rewarding careful positioning and shot placement with heaps of dead foes.
Diligence, 120-140 DMG, 22 Round mag, 30 recoil, 8 mags, Full auto mode, Silenced Role: Starter DMR that delivers high damage at long range while keeping the user concealed. Silencer isn’t as effective at close range, but great for staying hidden during firefights. Lore: High command has witnessed the substantial failures of their DMRs and has issued a complete recall of the weapon. A brand new receiver and chamber system has increased its muzzle velocity by 500 feet per second, greatly increasing lethality.
Diligence CS, 175-200DMG, 18-round mag, 6 mags, Staggers on full damage hit, Thermal optic Role: This more demanding variant of Diligence rewards more precise shooting with higher damage. It is better at stopping large targets but is less effective at picking off enemies. Lore: as part of the Ironbreaker initiative, many weapons are being issued new nitro ammunition. The diligence CS has undergone a more extensive upgrade. A new barrel and chamber designed to maximize lethality with the new ammo has greatly increased stopping power. The CS can stop devastators, bile spewers, berserkers, and similar targets with just a few hits. It has also been outfitted with a thermal sight to see through fog, sand, gas, and smoke.
Retribution(New), 275 DMG, 8 Round mag, Bolt action, Rounds reload, Silenced, AP Role: Longest range DMR, remarkably quiet and powerful, ideal for dropping large targets and protecting teammates from range.
Wyvern(New), 110DMG, 360 RPM, 26 Round magazine, 8 Mags, AP, Full Auto capable Role: Assault DMR, designed to be used aggressively at close range while permitting the user to provide long-range support.
SMGs (Classwide rework) Role: SMGs put holes in targets, not through them. SMGs have been largely replaced by Rifles in modern warfare, the same should apply to Helldivers. This shouldn’t make the useless, but instead good at different things. SMGs should be suited to personal defense and reliability under a wider variety of circumstances than rifles. SMGs have classwide damage nerf to reflect their lower caliber and have very noticeable damage falloff. However, they get a buff in every other area, with the most notable being that each SMG carries 12 mags instead of 8. SMGs are still capable of dropping larger targets with one mag, and with their lower recoil, they can reliably do so. But are now better suited to protecting the user from groups of weaker enemies.
Defender, 40 DMG, 720 RPM, 5 recoil, 12 Mags, Lightning fast reload Role: User-friendly and economical weapon, very easy to use. Less power than assault rifles but puts rounds where they need to be. Lore: The original Defender SMG was actually a failure, being prohibitively expensive to produce both the weapon and its ammo. Although it was a very popular weapon during peacetime, the demands of the war have made the defender a rare sight. To ensure that SEAF forces had a reliable weapon for CQC, the Defender A2 has been put into production. High command has changed its standard handgun cartridge from the .43 Hawk Tungsten core AP round to the cheaper 8mm FMJ round. The new defenders have an increased rate of fire and are more controllable but lacks the stopping power of the original.
Knight, 35 Damage, 900RPM Full auto, 1300rpm burst, 8 Recoil, 12 mags Role: PDW, Delivers a torrent of rounds quickly and accurately. Burst fire is ideal for mid-range enemies, full auto puts down groups of lightly armored enemies. Lore: The A4 knight variant features an electrically operated feed instead of a gas-operated one. This has enabled the weapon to fire at a more controllable rate in full auto while preserving medium-range accuracy with a 1300rpm hyperburst. It has also been outfitted with a less powerful round that is lighter and more economical, improving total ammo carried and recoil control at the cost of stopping power.
Shinobi(New) 50 DMG, 540RPM, 25 Round mag, Silenced Role: Spec-ops SMG for quietly dispatching groups of unarmored enemies. Less effective than other options in a firefight but perfect for sneaking around
Sweeper(New) 40 DMG, 800RPM, 80 Round drum, 8 mags, terrible ergonomics Role: Space Tommy gun, this weapon is designed to put as many rounds as possible down range as fast as possible, where said rounds land is irrelevant. Ammo hungry but very mobile.
I am aware these changes are extensive and won’t likely be implemented. I don’t believe that every weapon should be OP or god tier, but they should all have some niche where they really excel. Have a nice day and good luck Helldivers.

2024.05.14 19:11 KiwiW30 Prodigal Flare: Solar Exotic Hand Cannon

Exotic Perk: Golden Remnant
This weapon upon first draw fires one massive damage golden gun shot as long as golden gun is equipped costing the weapons full magazine, strong against barrier and unstoppable champions. After firing this single shot, reload speed is reduced by 65% (meaning it takes longer to reload) and the next magazine applies the Light Burnout de-buff on the wielder. Killing an enemy with Golden Remnant grants a medium amount of super energy, stronger enemies give more super and grenade energy, up to 35%, Guardians in the crucible count as 5% and guardians with their super active count as 7.5% as long as your super bar is under 75%. After casting your super, you may use this ability again by holding 'R' while the gun is at a full magazine. Dying does not allow the ability to be used again. If golden gun is not equipped than this this weapons exotic perk is basically useless.
Light Burnout: De-buff
The magazine after the high powered Golden Remnant shot is fired does 30% less damage to rank-and-file enemies, 25% less damage to powerful enemies, and 15% less damage to Bosses, Yellow bar enemies and Guardians. No damage drop-off for guardians with their super active. Switching weapons takes slightly longer as well, at a 5% time increase. this also creates a major decrease to impact and stability and other deficits to other stats. THIS EFFECT ONLY HAPPENS FOR ONE MAGAZINE. Swapping weapons does not remove the effect when switching back unless activating Golden remnant another time.
Special Perk 2: Rekindling Spirit
If the Golden Remnant shot misses a target that shot is refunded at the same strength.
Special Perk 3: Lighting the Fire
This weapon does a medium amount of bonus damage to fallen, scorn, hive and taken with a solar de-buff on them. up to 45% bonus damage. This weapon provides a extremely large explosion if the final shot of a magazine without the Light burnout effect defeats a powerful enemy spreading scorch across a large area.
Catalyst:
Acquired through Master level or higher nightfall's.
Catalyst ability: Splitting Eruption
The initial single strong golden remnant shot turns into two half Golden remnant powered shots that spread scorch to targets and ignites in a short radius around where the shot was fired and gives the wielder radiant for a short duration after a final blow. Stunning a champion with golden remnant creates an additional Golden remnant shot that fires at 35% strength.
Weapon Description:
"It all comes down to how much the traveler likes you and how much you appreciate its gifts" - Zavala
Whoever wielded this weapon before the guardian was deeply invested in the intricacies of the Shard of the Traveler that was used during the Red War to fight back against the cabal. It seems as though word got out about his research and when the cabal caught wind, they came for him. Not much on this in the archives either, must have been a relatively unknown guardian, why wouldn't they contact us after we scurried to the farm? So many unanswered questions. Its unfortunate that he ended up losing his ghost and burning up with the almighty. The weapon schematics we recovered from his corpse intrigue me though, there's.. a piece of the shard on here! - Zavala

2024.05.13 04:34 LordCoale The Mercy of Humans: Part 70 - Abandon Ship

First - Previous
Sorry for the gap in posts. I have scrapped at least six version of this. I am almost happy with this one. I had a different ending, but decided to go with what I have now. I think it is better.
I am also about to get a full knee replacement. I was supposed to get it done on April 2, but things got in the way. I have been working on getting my house in order for someone who cannot walk. It has been a bigger chore than I thought. I also have been learning OnShape to design stuff with my 3D printer. I have even designed the Star Wanderer from Chapter 2. I am working on the Behemoth. I could not get the images to post here for some reason, but if you want to go see them in OnShape, here are the links to two of the ships.

“… Allighetti …Mark, are you still with us?” I regained consciousness with Burns shaking me violently.
“Gyah. Stop! Yeah, I’m alive,” I spit blood and shook my head to clear the mental fuzz. “I think I have a concussion.”
The last missile strike had driven deep into the ODP’s hull, making it all the way to the missile feed system where we’d already been working to repair damage.
Burns accessed my suit’s med panel. “You got it right in one. Your suit’s a bit damaged. The autodoc is offline. Here…”
He overrode my suit with his, and I could already feel the auto-administered meds kicking in. The pain was still there, but bearable, and the fuzziness receded a bit.
“Thanks. I feel better already.”
I pulled the damage control system with my suit’s AI and checked what else just got damaged. It was more red than green.
“Shit. The station keeping drive is offline. Orbit is destabilized. If we don’t get it back online in… fifteen minutes, we are done,” I growled. “With everything damaged now, I don’t think we can repair the damage with the skeleton crew we have.”
“We better get on it then,” Burns replied.
“Skipper,” I tried to raise Commander Kowitzci. “Skipper? Chief Hanson? Anybody on the command deck? Simonetti? Can you hear me?”
“I hear you, sir,” Simonetti replied. He and Spec-One Zebediah Abrahams were on deck three repairing the power feeds to missile batteries six, seven, and eight. Six launchers made up each battery, so that was eighteen missile tubes out of action. A small percentage of the fleet’s launchers, but we only have twenty batteries. Those missiles were fifteen percent of our throw weight.
“Well, that means station coms are online and the CIC isn’t answering. We gotta get people in there. Drop what you are doing and head that way.” I’ve known the skipper most my life. There’s no way I could not go and make sure he is alive or not.
“Valencia, what’s your location?”
“We’re on deck seven, installing a new targeting computer for point defense group ten. Why?”
“That’s what I thought. You are closest to the CIC. Head down there now,” I ordered. “You’ll probably beat us, but if it is bad as I think, we’re going to need all the help we can get.”
“On my way,” he replied.
“We will meet you there.”
Burns grabbed my hand and helped me up. “Is this the right call? If we don’t get station keeping back online, we’re going down hard.”
“This bucket is going down no matter what we do. I am the senior surviving officer. Or at least the surviving officer who has working coms, so I get to make the call. We’re abandoning ship. We have ten minutes to find any injured and get them out.” I triggered the command through my suit’s coms. Across the ship, the lights switched from condition red for active combat to condition blue for abandon ship. Every crewman’s suits coms buzzed with the abandon ship order and ten minute timer.
“Shit.” I felt the same way. Nobody wants to abandon ship.
I headed to the lifts to get to the command deck as I pulled up the station schematics with the location of every crewman’s last known location, then filtered for who was not responding.
“We have the six people on the command deck unresponsive, Burkett and Torres in fusion one and Chief Khan in magazine one. Get down to mag-one and check on him,” I ordered.
Burns left without another word. I trusted him to get it done.
“Fletcher?” Senior Specialist Jason Fletcher and Specialist Second Class Dinah Moretti were in magazine three and the closest to fusion one.
“Yessir?”
“Burkett and Torres aren’t responding. Get down to fusion one. Check on them and get them out if you can.”
“We got it, boss,” Fletcher replied. “Go get the skipper.”
I was surprised. He must have been monitoring the channel. Fletcher and I had never really gotten along. He always irritated me with his slacking off, obnoxious sense of humor, and need to be the center of attention. But he had surprised me in the past few days. When the shit hit the fan, the man had buckled down and performed spectacularly. I guess getting shot at for real changes your attitude. He was still an ass, but now he was a hard working ass.
I set my coms to the full crew channel. “All personnel. Abandon ship. Find any injured crew you can and get them out. We have ten minutes until I set the scuttling charges.”
Whenever an ODP is damaged enough to abandon ship, it had to be scuttled or the whole core goes to the planet in one huge chunk. Scuttling the station meant it would be in over two dozen pieces that could burn up almost completely on reentry.
I made it to the central lifts, which were offline. The door still had power and my override code opened it. But I still had to climb nine decks to the command deck. Luckily the lifts are one of the few places aboard that do not have artificial gravity. It was just a matter of jumping in and pulling myself hand over hand.
“Mark,” Valencia often ‘forgot’ that I was now an ensign. I chose not to say anything, again.
“Go.”
“There is shit-ton of damage up here. The main lifts are shot to shit and there is debris blocking my way from lift two. I am going to try lift three.”
An Orbital Defense Platform is nothing more than a long cylinder with the missile launchers, energy weapons, sensors, and shields on the top and the external magazine and its docking systems at the other end. The station has twenty eight decks and is divided into four quarter ‘pie’ sections. The main personnel and missile lifts are located at the spine, in the exact center of the hull. Lift two serves the Bravo Section of the station and were near the exterior hull. Lift three is the next one around the outer hull serving Charlie Section.
“Roger. I’m in the main lift shaft now. I am climbing past deck eighteen.”
“You might beat me there,” Valencia replied.
“Do your best. If you can’t get there in five minutes, get to an escape pod and go.”
“Boss,” Simonetti’s voice cut into the conversation. “We can’t make it to the command deck. There’s a gaping hole between us and you.”
The damage from the most recent hits had reached deep into the hull, even as far as the central lifts. I’d passed multiple holes, from size of my fist to several that I could walk through.
“I understand. Abandon ship,” I ordered. “I will see you dirtside.”
“Shit. Are you sure? It might be risky, but we can go EVA to reach you. It is only about thirty meters.”
“No. And do me a favor. If I don’t make it, but a round in my memory.”
“Mark, you are to damned dumb to die. You can buy the round. See you on the surface. Good luck.”
“Thanks, I think.” As I climbed through some mangled lift guiderails my suit’s Geiger counter went crazy. The suit’s shielding could protect me in the short term, but I don’t want to hang out here for very long. The last few meters were difficult. I had to use my plasma cutter to remove a piece of shattered bulkhead that blocked my way. I looked at my chrono as I slipped into the command deck and saw I had five minutes… Just five minutes.
The command deck was a scene from hell. I saw at least one body and several body parts floating in the zero-g. “I’m in. What’s your status Valencia?”
“Almost there.”
I found Commander Kowitzci’s body pinned under a heavy beam that had collapsed from the ceiling and checked his suit’s medical panel. “The skipper’s still alive.”
I jumped in surprise when he grabbed my hand. I could see his lips moving but, I couldn’t hear anything. I pressed my faceplate against his, hoping the direct contact would allow sound to bridge between us.
“I got you, sir. The station’s done. I’ve given the order to abandon ship.”
“Go. Get yourself out. That’s an-”
“Don’t! Don’t give me that order, skipper, because I will disobey it.”
“I’m pinned and I cannot feel my legs. Even if you get me out, I am dead weight. Save yourself.”
“Skipper, I’ve known you since I was nine and Angus is one of my best friends. If you think I am going to tell him that I left you here to save myself, even if you ordered it, think again. Now, Valencia is almost here. Between the two of us we should be able to get you out. Hang tight. I am going to check on Chief Hanson.”
Chief Petty Officer Kenzie Hanson is one of the system’s best engineers. Unlike most of the crews, she is active Navy and had spent most of her career on these things. ODP 9 was not her normal duty station, but someone in operations had the brilliant idea to send her here to replace Chief Maartens.
Having someone with her experience coordinating damage control freed me and my people to fix what we could. Which in the end was not much, or at least not enough. The incoming missile fire had kept coming regardless of what the fleet did. It had turned into a battle of attrition, and while we had more resources than they did, our problem was that planets can’t dodge. The enemy could stay further out-system and lob missiles until they ran out, and we had no choice but to defend Verdigris, no matter what the costs.
“Hey, boss!” Valencia finally made it to the command deck. It brought a wave of relief.
“Glad you could finally join us. The skipper is pinned. Hansen is unconscious but alive. Check on Dahl and Ski.”
PO1 Grace Dahl and Master Specialist Gustavus Wasnewski were still strapped into their chairs at the tactical station.
“What about Dunagin and Stavros?” He asked.
“KIA.”
Hansen’s med panel showed she was alive, just unconscious. I released her shock frame and pulled her free. The command deck’s six escape pods were spaced along the outer bulkhead. Each pod could hold ten people. A redundancy in case any were damaged.
“Shit. Stavros is dead and Dahl’s suit already hit her with hybernol.” I could hear the simmering anger in Valencia’s voice. Stavros had been a good friend to all of us.
“Get her to a pod,” I ordered.
“What about Stav?”
“I am sorry, man, but the living are our priority.” I struggled to pull Hansen across the deck. Damn I am tired.
“I ain’t leaving him here. Not like this. I just can’t.”
“Fuck. If you can manage it… then do what you gotta do.” I didn’t have time to argue. Valencia could be a stubborn little shit when he wanted.
I was tired. Maybe that is why it took me so long to realize this rescue effort would be easier in zero-g.
I triggered the all hands channel and announced, “Clamp up, people. I am cutting internal gravity.”
I did not wait for any replies and quickly pulled up the control systems on my suit’s computer. With a few quick gestures, cut the power to the artificial gravity system. Pulling Hansen got easier immediately. Now I just had to fight mass and momentum without gravity’s negative effects.
I got her into the escape pod and returned to the skipper. My chrono showed I had less than two minutes to get him free or we might both die. I chose not to think to hard on that. I could be a stubborn little shit, too. He was still pinned under the beam, but it shifted a bit when I pulled with everything I had. It made me wish I had an Österlenlender here to help. One of those walking tanks could move like it was a paperweight.
I put everything I had into it, closing my eyes and grunting with the strain. I could feel the veins popping in my forehead. Then, the beam moved. I opened my eyes and saw Valencia next to me putting everything into helping me lift. The skipper managed to wiggle free, but we could see he was hurt pretty bad.
Valencia pulled the commander free, and I released the beam that slowly fell back to the deck. It took only a few seconds to get into the escape pod. Somehow, we managed to make the ten minute deadline.
Once the wounded were strapped in, I initiated the self-destruct sequence. It was SOP when something this size was abandoned in orbit. The smaller the size of the debris, the better chance it has to burn up on reentry. No need to add anything else to the planet’s woes.
“Attention. All hands, abandon ship. Self-destruct is set for one minute. Abandon ship, abandon ship, abandon ship, abandon ship. God speed.”
With that, I sealed the escape pod hatch and went to hit the eject button. But before I could, our luck ran out. Another wave of missiles detonated against our failing shields. The x-ray laser warheads mercilessly bored deep into the station. My suit’s radiation warning went off, letting me know my exposure had reached critical levels. The energy imparted by the lasers hit with physical force, blowing through the station’s armor and superstructure like a toddler ripping into a Christmas present.
Debris flew across the command deck and flames licked at my back. The explosion threw me into the back wall of the escape pod, painfully knocking the wind out of me. I tried to sit up but could not. My legs just wouldn’t work. I looked down, finally noticing the jagged spear of chromilstyn sticking out of my chest.
“Aw, shit.” It was the last words I said.

2024.05.11 18:16 shadows_arrowny Fixing crafting: combining random rolls and "red borders"

I've heard a fair amount of discussion/debate around which system players prefer: red boarder weapons w/ crafting or random rolls (perhaps improved with BRAVE attuning). Unfortunately, I think neither system adequately addresses issues in the core gameplay loop in Destiny.
Some people prefer the red boarder crafting system, understandably, because it guarantees an end to the grind, typically within a reasonable amount of time. Others prefer the random roll system, because it makes you excited about drops. Luckily, it's not difficult to have the pros from both systems without the cons from either system.
The easy fix would be to make everything craftable (that has multiple perk sets available)j, but ditch this 'red boarder' nonsense altogether. Instead, every 'schematic' for a gun is learned over time through random drops. For instance, let's say I'm trying to get an Edge Transit, and the perk set I'd like is Hard Launch Spike Nades or Implosion Rounds Envious Assassin Bait and Switch. Rather than having to get that exact roll randomly, every time I get a drop that has a perk, magazine, or barrel, etc. that I haven't seen before, I can learn that option in the gun schematic for when I craft it.
So let's say I get the three rolls below:
  1. Hard Launch Spike Nades Repulsor Brace Deconstruct
  2. Volatile Launch Implosion Rounds Envious Assassin Destabilizing Rounds
  3. Smart Drift Control High- Velocity Rounds Field Prep Bait and Switch
In the current system, I got 3 weapons I don't want. And as many of us have experienced, I'm sure, we've gone 40-50 drops on BRAVE weapons and still not gotten what we want (this has happened to me on attuned weapons for 3 of the weapons so far). In the new system, however, I can be excited about each of the drops because their sum adds up to exactly what I'm looking for. I can run over to Mars and build an Edge Transit with the perk set I was hoping to get (or select from the list of other options that I've received in the list above). I can continue to grind, too, for the rest of the perks in case I want rolls not found yet or for completionist sake. Either way, I have something to look forward to in my random drops as well as protection against the absurd grind that often accompanies searches for god rolls.
The above could also be a foundation to build on where specific persk, magazines, barrels, scopes, etc. could be found in activities/patrols. These could be like a consumable that you apply to a crafting schematic to unlock an additional optoin you haven't unlocked yet, so that there are additional ways to learn your crafting schematics aside from simply getting additional guns. There's a lot of gameplay loop upside to building that that sort of system aside from simply improving the two present systems that come up short.

2024.05.10 22:41 1oAce How I Would Buff Every Primary and Secondary in the Game

Hello! I used to be someone who didn't really follow the whole "no nerfs only buffs" thing, but after the last few patches, I've changed my mind. Frankly I came to realize I don't lose sleep over weapons being powerful in a PvE game. And although Helldivers 2 isn't necessarily a power fantasy, it is a video game, and the primary point should be fun.
So with that in mind, 312 hours played with a variety of equipment, all the warbond weapons unlocked. I'd like to make a comprehensive list of how I would improve every single weapon, just based on my personal opinion playing the game at Helldive and lower.
A lot of these changes are going to be in relation to each other, for reference.
Structure:
Weapon:
Changes:
Reasoning:
A. Assault Rifles
Weapon: AR-23 Liberator
Changes:
Reasoning: The AR-23 Liberator is the bread and butter weapon of the Federation of Super Earth, and it should reflect its purpose. Fighting massive hordes of enemies. After 100 years, 60 round magazines should be standard issue for culling the Terminid threat.
Weapon: AR-23P Liberator Penetrator
Changes
Reasoning: A smaller magazine than the standard liberator, but still enough to chew on bugs. Similarly, its damage should be brought up to be more effective for clearing bugs and bots without fully matching the base liberator's capacity and damage in favor of medium armor penetration.
Weapon: AR-23C Liberator Concussive
Changes
Reasoning: The concussive element of the 23C is similar to the armor pen of the penetrator, but as it stands right now it is a massively weaker option than other weapons, so bringing it more in-line with the base liberator would make it more effective.
Weapon: AR-61 Tenderizer
Changes
Reasoning: The Tenderizer should hold the advantage of firepower at the cost of capacity compared to the other light pen assault rifles. It is a "high caliber" assault rifle after all. Hit hard, hit precisely. Doesn't mow down hordes but cuts apart specific targets.
Weapon: BR-14 Adjudicator
Changes
Reasoning: Adjudicator is a battle rifle and it should play like one, precise, and hard hitting. It lacks the capacity of the AR-23P but makes up for it with shot impact.
B. Marksman Rifles
Weapon: R-63 Diligence
Changes
Reasoning: A lack of armor pen means it should at least deal more damage. As a lightweight rifle, it should also fire faster and have less kick.
Weapon: R-63CS Diligence Counter Sniper
Changes
Reasoning: Medium Armor penetration makes it fairly effective already, simple ergonomic and damage boost should make it more fun to use as the heaviest rifle.
C. Submachine Guns
Weapon: MP-98 Knight
Changes:
Reasoning: With 1380 RPM, it better have a lot of bullets. A space P90 should have twice the ammo capacity, the D in Democracy stands for DOUBLE!
Weapon: SMG-37 Defender
Changes
Reasoning: As with the Liberator, it is a standard issue weapon, who's magazine capacity should reflect that. Similarly, its one-handed nature gives it a good base advantage in contrast to its fire rate.
Weapon: SMG-72 Pummeler
Changes
- Damage 65 -> 70
Reasoning: Match its damage with the Defender, while keeping other weaknesses in comparison to the Defender.
D. Shotguns
Weapon: SG-8 Punisher
Changes:
Reasoning: As a pump shotgun in the sci-fi future, it should hit hard, hit fast, and hit often. And with a foregrip it shouldn't have as much recoil as it does.
Weapon: SG-8S Slugger
Changes:
Reasoning: Similarly to the punisher, with such condensed force and reduced damage, it should also bonk the shit out of anything it hits. A ranged precision bonk.
Weapon: SG-225 Breaker
Changes
Reasoning: As an auto shotgun, it should be strong at clearing enemies and hitting hard at close range.
Weapon: SG-225SP Breaker Spray&Pray
Changes:
Reasoning: Its called Spray and Pray for a reason.
Weapon: SG-225IE Breaker Incendiary
Changes:
Reasoning: So you can saturate enemies in fire!
E. Explosive
Weapon: CB-9 Exploding Crossbow
Changes:
Reasoning: It should make Van Helsing weep. It should have more ammo capacity than the Eruptor due to how light the whole weapon structure is.
Weapon: JAR-5 Dominator
Changes:
Reasoning: As a handheld weapon, it should be more ergonomic than it is. Its currently less maneuverable than most support weapons.
Weapon: R-36 Eruptor
Changes:
Reasoning: It should fit the archetype of a destructive power house, and should shatter any enemy it hits.
F. Energy-Based
Weapon: SG-8P Punisher Plasma
Changes:
Reasoning: The arc of the plasma weapon is a pretty strong disadvantage to the scorcher, so it should have some strong advantages to make up for it.
Weapon: ARC-12 Blitzer
Changes:
Reasoning: Should be able to consistently kill things, and slightly faster fire rate so it doesn't look so awkward being pumped.
Weapon: LAS-5 Scythe
Changes:
Reasoning: Its damage structure of a beam weapon means it should deal ludicrous damage for consistently hitting enemies.
Weapon: LAS-16 Sickle
Changes:
Reasoning: The nerf felt unwarranted, and essentially just applies an ammo anxiety to the weapon which prevents you from absolutely unloading as you should be able to. Its complete lack of pen and lower damage makes the liberator still competitive.
Weapon: PLAS-1 Scorcher
Changes:
Reasoning: As a standard issue plasma rifle, who variants are based on, it should function more as a primary.
Weapon: Plas-101 Purifier
Changes:
Reasoning: It is advertised as a charging up plasma rifle, and it should function like an energy based marksman rifle.
Conclusion:
Hey again! Thanks for reading if you have. Do you think these changes are unbalanced? Good, I don't care. Make it fun not balanced first. Once every weapon is unfathomably based, then I might consider making weapons weaker. I won't lose sleep for Sickle having 6 mags instead of 3.
Edit: I forgot to do secondaries! Oops.
I think most of them are fine idk. Give the new deagle matched damage to the senator. Make the dagger basically impossible to overheat, its the opposite of a glass cannon, mid asf but basically impossible to lose ammo with. Peacemaker should basically have 0 recoil as a standard pistol you wield two handed.

Areas of Improvements

Vehicle Improvements
We’re happy to see that Attack Helicopters since our latest changes have become a force to be reckoned with, with players engaging with them more and more, as well as finding out new ways to use them to their advantage on the Battlefield. We think that they are, for most part, in a good spot. However, due to the combined firepower of both pilot and gunner they have been over performing in one aspect: Destroying Armored Ground Vehicles.
We believe at its current state the Attack Helicopter can easily destroy any vehicle in too short of a timeframe and we are toning that down a little by reducing the firepower of some of the more potent weapons vs armored vehicles, to address this:
  • We have lowered the damage of the TOW missile against heavy and medium armored vehicles (Tanks, Wildcat, Ram)
  • We have also lowered the damage of Anti Vehicle Rocket Pods to the same category of vehicles by 20%. We believe Attack Helicopters should still be potent and a direct counter to ground armor, however these changes are aiming to give a bigger window for ground vehicles to react and to also push pilots to make more tactical decisions when attacking vehicles.
APS Shootdown Sentinel
We are aware of the long lasting issue of vehicles camping hills and it has become a bit more exaggerated when Irish’ APS Shootdown Sentinel is included into this equation.
With Update #7.2.0 we are removing the capabilities for this Specialist Gadget to shootdown any Anti Vehicle Weapon or Gadgets. This should allow Air Vehicles and Infantry to once again attack such ground vehicles, as well as pushing the gadget itself into a more infantry-focused mentality.
MacKay
This Season in general we are aiming to slightly slow down the pace of the game and the biggest offenders that can oftentimes feel like they are pushing the limits too much. We are starting with MacKay by making his gadget more defensive and strategic rather than having it as an aggressive enabler offensively.

To do that we are increasing the cooldown of the grapple from 11 seconds to 25 and we are also lowering the boost of his trait “Nimble” which grants a boost to movement speed while aiming down sights from 40% to 25%.
Additionally, in a future patch, we will be implementing a force reload animation when equipping the weapon to further emphasize the strategic use of the gadget.
Systemic repair
Continuing with the effort to slow down the pace of the game, we are increasing the time it takes for the systemic repair system to repair the health of a vehicle. The rate at which this repairs is defined by the role and class type of the vehicle in consideration with their gameplay expectations.
All vehicles beside Bolte, EBLC-Ram, the upcoming Draugr and all ground transport vehicles will repair 25HP in 8.6 seconds, up from 5 seconds. This change is meant to emphasize the role of engineers and help slow down the pace in these combat moments, where before it was possible to nullify taken damage nearly instantaneously by pressing a single button.

Changelog

AI, Soldiers & General Improvements
  • Anti-Tank Mine damage has received a rebalance following recent updates, it will now take 3 Anti-Tank Mines to fully destroy a Heavy Vehicle such as a Tank or MAV. It will still remain possible to destroy Medium Armored Vehicles such as the Wildcat and EBLC-Ram with 2 Anti-Tank Mines.
  • Fixed an issue with the SOFLAM being unable to deploy on select Battlefield Portal experiences.
  • Irish’s APS-36 Shootdown Sentinel should no longer stop Underbarrel Smoke Grenades.
  • Additionally, the APS-36 Shootdown Sentinel will no longer stop Anti Vehicle Projectiles.
  • MacKay’s Nimble Trait which improves the speed of movement during ADS has been reduced from 40% to 25%.
  • Grappling Hook reload speed has now been increased from 11 seconds to 25 seconds. In a future update, we will be introducing a reload animation every time this Specialist Gadget is equipped.
Weapon Balancing
  • Despite the penguins' continued efforts to keep them shiny, the Scope Glint on the Raven and ACOG Sights on the SVD is no more.
  • Fixed an issue with some magazines on the AK 5C that could cause their models to turn invisible.
  • Fixed the alignment of the iron sights on the AK-24 skins "Dead-Center" and "Access Memory".
  • Fixed 12M Auto shell ejection when using the Type 4 Heavy Suppressor.
  • Fixed pellet spread on SPAS-12 (BC2/BF3) being too low.
  • The Penguins forgot to reflect the AKS-74u rate of fire change from Update 7.1 in the Collection screen, it is now accurately shown. We’ll get them notepads in the future.
  • Slightly slowed down hip fire dispersion reset on P90, PP-2000 and AKS-74u.
  • AM40 Standard Issue damage under 10 meters changed from 26 to 24.
  • AM40 dispersion and horizontal recoil increased by 5%.
  • VHX-D3 High Power ammo damage under 20 meters changed from 25 to 24.
  • LCMG dispersion when using the Shortened barrel attachment increased by 10%. This change should help balance both the attachment against other barrel options while also balancing the LCMG compared to other LMGs.

Vehicles
  • Adjustment to the damage vehicles take when colliding with other objects.
  • Reduced range of attack helicopter thermal gunner from 600 to 450.
  • Fixed an issue where EMP would permanently disable the Polaris Sportsman.
  • Improvements made towards lock on missiles missing certain air vehicles that are locked onto.
  • Improvement to frogfoot rocket pods zero-point.
  • Removed the Gunner HUD from side passengers of Condor and HIND, going forward only the nose gunner will benefit from this.
  • Fixed lock-on weapons killing the pilot of Nightbird and not dealing damage to the vehicle.
  • Lowered main heavy tanks steering sensitivity when the sprint button is held.
  • Increased rudder responsiveness on 2042-era Jets which will lead to a more responsive yaw input.
Systemic Repair Changes:
  • Combat vehicles aside from Bolte, EBLC Ram and the upcoming Draugr will take 25HP in 8.6 seconds. Other vehicles will remain at 25HP in 5 seconds.
  • Increased HMG Weapon Station Velocity from 600 to 690
  • Lowered Attack Helicopter TOW Launcher damage to Main Heavy Tanks from 30 to 25 and to Medium Armor such as the Wildcat from 35 to 30. This is not a blanket change and will not impact other vehicles such as Transport or Air Vehicles
  • Helicopter Anti Vehicle Pods will deal 20% less impact damage and further blast damage reduction to Ground Armor.
TOW Balancing Changes:
Air Attack Vehicles
  • Time to live increased from 5 to 10 seconds
  • Max speed lowered from 120 to 80
  • Turn angles and engine time to live have been adjusted for better control
Ground Vehicles
  • Time to live increased from 10 to 15 seconds
  • Speed lowered from 120 to 50
  • Turn angles and engine time to live have been adjusted for better control
This announcement may change as we listen to community feedback and continue developing and evolving our Live Service & Content. We will always strive to keep our community as informed as possible.

2024.05.09 21:28 JSBL_ Can we talk about the MP-98 KNIGHT SMG while we discuss primary weapons, please?

Hello! LO
MP-98 Knight. The P90 of Super Earth. A one handed SMG that has an insane fire rate of 1380 rounds per minute. It is the highest rate of fire out of any weapon I have checked. This thing is faster even than Stalwart at max RPMs. And oh boy, KNIGHT IS FUN! But could be more fun with a super simple tweak that I suggest in this post here. It doesn't touch the gun's stats at all. Hear me out.
the boye in question

BUT!

We currently have 3 SMGs. The SMG-37 DEFENDER and newly added SMG-72 PUMMELER. Their fire rate is like a third of KNIGHT. The ammo economy on these two SMGs is just fine, honestly. You can safely go around the map and collect ammo boxes and be okay while using those two. Now, here comes the important part:

You get three magazines per ammo box with those two SMGs. You get TWO with the KNIGHT.

You also get all 7 magazines for PUMMELER and DEFENDER while you only get 5 for the KNIGHT per Resupply box.

Why does the extremely ammo hungry Knight get less magazines per ammo/resupply box than the other two? The in-game model for the magazines is almost the same size, so they definitely could fit inside those little boxes.
As I mentioned previously, the ammo economy for DEFENDER and PUMMELER is just fine. Partly because they are more precise. The slower rate of fire makes it easier to stop firing right after the enemy dies when compared to the KNIGHT. You also get 3 magazines per ammo box, which means you can fill pretty much 100% of your ammo just by using two boxes. The KNIGHT requires 3, and it requires them very often.
Honestly? I never struggle with ammo at all unless I go crazy. This gun is the only one where the struggle is actually real. Noticable. Game changing at times, actually (at least from my experience).
Therefore, my suggestion is as follows:
Please, Arrowhead. Increase the amount of mags we pick up while using the KNIGHT SMG. It would be a great quality of life for this weapon and make it even more fun. It's already fine as it is, personally I think it doesn't need any tweaks when it comes to the stats. It's just that we could use some more mags from the ammo and resupply boxes.
plz <3
tl;dr - all SMGs come with 7 mags. Defender and pummeler which are not ammo hungry get 3 mags per ammo box. The super ammo hungry Knight gets two. Can we increase the amount of mags in ammo boxes for Knight? The Resupply box also grants you 5 mags instead of 7 for the Knight.

Can we talk about the MP-98 KNIGHT SMG while we discuss primary weapons, please?
Hello!
  • It comes with 7 magazines, 50 bullets each.
  • It's hard to aim with this thing therefore you quite often find yourself in a position to spray and pray if there are many bugs around (especially with the current MO and difficulty 8-9). Therefore, there is a high probability that you will waste a good chunk of ammo.
  • Often requires an almost full mag dump to kill high value targets such as Stalkers
  • Basically, in short - the ammo economy for this weapon is very important for it to shine.

BUT!

2024.05.08 20:43 BigBuseroni My 2 ¢ on the student arrest

As more information is coming out, the more I'm starting to understand what the situation was.
Just to state facts, a student at the North district laundromats found a single cartridge in one of the machines that led to the arrest of a student who will be referred to as Chris. In his possession was an illegally modified semi-automatic Aero Precision firearm with a flash suppressor and telescoping stock. Along side that was ammunition and magazines for the firearm. The said drawings depicted are described as an individual shooting another individual as a crowd of people are watching. A bit of background from the suspect is that he is part of the Highlander Student Safety Team.
Additionally, there was no other evidence found that would point him towards the planning of a mass shooting. There was no tactical gear, body armor, manifestos, building schematics, or even additional weaponry. (Which all have been commonly used and found in other incidents)
Although the drawing is of a concern, I would argue he has more of a superhero complex. Which would provide context to the drawing, he was wanting to use the firearm on an attacker, not a crowd.
It is still very illegal and dangerous to be holding onto a weapon on a campus apartment. But that is why I believe in investigators and the court allowed him to post bail. As he didn't present a danger to the student body. It is also why he isn't being charged with additional crimes of threatening a mass shooting.
Although as stated in the title, this is my overall analysis on the situation provided by evidence and research I've made.
