This is a subreddit primarily focused on modern pop music, but for his 120th birthday I want to take a moment to remember one of the most iconic pop acts in American history:

Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller

A jazz pianist, a singer, and a prolific songwriter famous for his ability to jump onstage and "lift up the band," Fats Waller was a regular fixture of the nightlife scene in New York (an important figure of the legendary Harlem Renaissance) and toured his act all around the country in addition to working as a recording artist in the budding record industry.
In a way, he was one of America's first pop stars- a musical prodigy who dropped out of high school, broke into the music industry when he was a teen, sold tons of records, and developed a huge onstage persona and lived a hard partying lifestyle. We've heard that story a million times, but Fats did it first.
An often repeated story about him recounts a shocking incident where gangster Al Capone kidnapped him off the street to force him to play at a birthday party, because everybody wanted to party with Fats Waller! A less repeated story is this one I found in an NPR article that describes him selling eight of his original songs in exchange for eight hamburgers, which he then consumed in a single sitting.
So certainly, a larger than life figure.

The Records

His legacy as a founding figure of America's pop scene extends to a place you might not expect: back in 1926, he signed a recording contract with the Victor Talking Machine Company, one of the earliest manufacturers and distributors of phonographs and records, which would be bought out by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) in 1929. Then in 1968, the company would be renamed... RCA Records!
RCA is still a powerful record label today and it's partially thanks to Fats, who was a big moneymaker for them in the early days of the record industry when they were literally selling records.
Over the course of his twenty five year career, he copyrighted around five hundred recordings- supposedly, the label would send him into a recording booth with bunches of sheet music bought from Tin Pan Alley composers and he would rearrange them on the spot to give them that special Fats Waller touch!
But he's best remembered for his skills as a pianist and, most importantly, his songwriting skills. I want to take a moment to highlight that because I firmly believe he's one of the greatest songwriters in history- many of his hits have been accepted as standards and are still in rotation with jazz singers today.

The Music

You might have heard his song "Ain't Misbehavin'," which became something of his signature song after he performed it in the landmark film Stormy Weather (1943), and it's the perfect encapsulation of his style. A clever piano line, a catchy melody, a touch of humor, and a lot of heart. It's just timeless music.

There's a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor to the song that's signature Fats- in addition to the lyrics he wrote, he was known to improv and throw new jokes in on the fly during live performances.
We're lucky enough to have footage of him performing "Your Feets Too Big" (another one of his signature numbers where he chastises a woman for, you guessed it, her foot size) and you can just see the charisma oozing off of him as he banters with the band and makes eyes at the camera. All while playing the piano too!
And he was no innocent either, often lacing his songs with innuendo that will shatter any illusions you have about old music being overly conservative. Take, for example, Hattie Noel's recording of "Find Out What They Like," which begins with a disclaimer that the song is "strictly about home cooking" before she sings this:
Find out what he likes / And how he likes it
Go on and give it to him just that way
Give it to him when he wants it / And any time he wants it
And don't you have a single word to say!
He was often performing in nightclubs and bars, which meant he knew how to get the crowd going- "The Joint Is Jumpin'" is the quintessential 1920s party anthem, with the title referring to a secret code phrase that bootleggers would use during the prohibition era to let people know that a party had illegal alcohol. The jaunty music he wrote did a lot to get people on the dance floors as well!
But though he's associated with lively entertainment, there was some grit beneath all that as well. Despite his success, Waller was still a black man living in early 20th century America, and he channelled that into legendary "Black and Blue" (a hit for Louis Armstrong) which is considered by some to be one of the first jazz protest songs:
I'm white inside, but that don't help my case / 'Cause I can't hide what is in my face
How would it end? Ain't got a friend / My only sin is in my skin
What did I do to be so black and blue?
Whatever the occasion, Fats had a song for it.

The End

But like a lot of great artists, Fats had his troubles. He was known for his hard partying lifestyle and frequent money problems that pushed him to be constantly working, and he would tragically pass away in 1943 from pneumonia while on tour.
The man was only 39 years old at the time, but as of today his legacy officially stretches 120 years! So spin a record today for Fats Waller, and get the joint jumpin' in his memory.
If you'd like to hear more of his music, I'd strongly recommend setting aside ninety minutes to watch the Broadway musical Ain't Misbehavin' because it's an incredible piece of theatre that showcases his music spectacularly. Diana Ross & The Supremes did an adorable tribute to him on The Ed Sullivan Show that's worth a watch too.

Today started gentler than expected, both of us awake before the alarm. I forgot how early first light is, already the city was waking up in the dim blue of the predawn. We brushed our teeth and got dressed and muttered about how ridiculous it was that we needed to be at the ferry terminal an hour early. They weren't going to check anything besides our tickets, but then again, we've heard worse stories about dumber technicalities. Just after 430 we were outside and a few minutes later we were away.
The city in the morning was mostly quiet, a few trucks rumbling on the highway. Luckily the forecasted rain had already ended, I had fully expected to have the added misery of being wet and cold to the headache of being up too early. We arrived somewhat breathless to the ferry terminal, a giant ferry awaiting us. Lines and lines of heavy trucks were waiting their turn to load while lots of cars were also waiting. Looks like everyone took the hour before rule seriously. An attendant looked at our QR codes and told us to put a sign that he gave us on our bikes and put them to the side while we waited for general boarding, which was in 45 minutes. Grumbling, we parked our bikes and went inside the terminal.
The terminal was simple but clean, I double checked the reservation with someone at a computer as I had nothing better to do. Upstairs there was a small gift shop where we bought a box of cookies for our upcoming host. Seemed like we should try to get them something from a region they're not from, though I'm sure they'll appreciate the sentiment. The cookies do look tasty though. We shared a drink from a machine and stared out the window, a little dazed. Framed tourism posters were hung about the space, one for each region in Japan. I initially thought they were anime posters, but it seems that's just how ads are made. Maybe one inspired the other.
Eventually it was time to board, we were the last as is usual when we're biking. We walked our bikes up the ramp to the second deck and were ushered to one side where after we had removed our bags our bikes were wrapped in blankets and secured to the wall. We thanked them and headed into the ferry. The third deck had a check in counter where we got a key to our room, which was a private room but not facing the ocean. We only wanted the room to nap in, so that was fine. The third deck had bunk rooms as well as a room where you just got a section of the floor, while the fourth deck had the private rooms, the ones facing in like ours and the more expensive ones facing out. The fifth deck had the deluxe rooms as well as the suites (which I don't think were even available to rent). We plunked down our bags and I went back to sleep.
I found the rocking motion of the ship rather soothing while laying down, and settled into a light nap for a few hours. Around 830, both of us needed something to eat, so we went to explore the ship's amenities. We found the cafe, which had a disappointingly small selection of things to eat. We later would find out that the restaurant that serves breakfast did not open, probably leading to a run on the pastries. We got a cookie and coffee and sat at a table, watching the waves go by. Bryce informed me that he gets seasick around this time, leading me to ask him why he wanted to do this then. He just likes boats I guess.
After breakfast we wandered around to see the amenities. We found the grill restaurant that was more expensive than we cared to spend on, a small arcade with machines from the 80's, some air hockey tables (the sports corner), a theatre with a 10am showing of Tom and Jerry, some vending machines (ice cream time), the onsens, a yellowed smoking room straight out of 1994, a business corner, and a kids corner with blocks. I wanted to play with the blocks but didn't. They would never understand. Also kids are gross and I'm sick enough already. Overall, the same as anything else we've seen in Japan, a relic of the 80's, still spotless, still running, but at 10% capacity. More employees than you can shake a stick at, all doing their very best job.
I felt a little ill after writing for awhile so I went to go lay down while Bryce went to the arcade, promising to nobody in particular that he was going to wait til lunch to crack open a cold one. I said I didn't care but good luck with that as I went back to bed. Being horizontal with nowhere to go felt good for awhile. I had a lot of writing to catch up on.
Towards lunch I got up and found Bryce in front of a slot machine with a strong zero in his hand. I said nothing about the pre lunch drink, but asked if he won anything. One of the machines you could spin all you like, so we did that for awhile. There was one machine that looked fun, so I played a top down shooter for awhile while Bryce tried his luck at some godawful prize machine full of dusty crap. Eventually the restaurant opened for lunch and we filed. There was a 25th anniversary ramen available, and we both got that, along with a croissant. The ramen was pretty good, I found the shio broth comforting. The croissant was because it didn't fill us up enough.
After lunch I was in the mood for a bath. An onsen on a ship felt like a luxury I wanted to try and I thought it would be restful. Bryce had no interest in trying his luck at hiding his tattoos, I didn't care if I got kicked out at this point. What're they gonna do, tell me to get off at the next stop? I did what I always do, hold a hand towel over my arm and mind my business. As expected, not many people were using the bath after lunch and I had it to myself aside from a mother and her babbling toddler who only spent a few minutes there. The bath had a view of the mountains of hokkaido in the distance, and Hakodate a little closer. It was a neat sight to be in a hot open bath while watching the ocean go by. The rest of the ship was whatever but this was nice. I did a few laps of the bath and cold water, and sat in the steam room, hoping the hot air would somehow cure my ailments. I got a chance to properly wash my hair, which had become just fouled from all the road dust, sweat, and body oils that had built up. Gross. I don't usually shampoo as I don't usually need to, but once a week or so I definitely need it while on the road.
After the onsen I went to go see how Bryce was doing, happily reading his book in a chair by the ocean. He accompanied me to the room to lay down for awhile, the hot water and sloshing of the rough seas making me feel a little ill again. In our room, we heard a faraway bang like we hit something. I'm sure it's nothing. The ship sure seemed like it was leaning more to one side though. We didn't do too much else for the rest of the ride, we did a few more laps of the ship trying to find more things. We did find the forward saloon, which sounds wild but is merely a room facing forward with comfy couches. Unfortunately all the windows are blocked off, so the room is a little pointless other than a private space to talk or read in a dim room. The ship overall was comfortable, but I definitely got a little nauseated from the rough seas.
The ship finally docked, late, and we were let out to the open air of Hokkaido. It's a bit chilly here! I immediately noticed the change in air, it's less humid for sure. It will be a shift to go back to cool temperatures but a welcome one. Nights in the tent should be much less sticky at least! Good thing we still have our biking tights, riding in just shorts is pretty cold here in the evening. Truthfully though the cool temperatures is better for biking and I wasn't really enjoying the heat, so this is a welcome surprise.
We docked at the east port of Tomakomai, which meant we had to bike into the city where we planned to stay another night. I needed another really solid sleep to finally kick this illness, so one more hotel night before we braved the wilderness south of Sapporo. We braced ourselves and headed west, directly into a heavy crosswind that was some of the steadiest and toughest wind we've seen yet. It swept right over the flat grassy areas on the coast, really reminding us of the prairies. Everything is so spread out here compared to the rest of the country, I wonder if Sapporo is like this too.
After a rough push through the wind on roads that were somewhat falling apart from the truck traffic and a lack of maintenance, we got to a town about halfway. The nausea from the boat was getting to me and we were both too hungry to go further without a bite to eat. Luckily Hokkaido has their own brand of conbinis and we were more than happy to see some new products. We got their take on fried chicken, some Hokkaido grown potato wedges and some soft drinks we hadn't seen yet. The wedges were great, the chicken was good and one of the drinks was terrible. Sour bubbly water with no flavor. What's the point?
Biking further into the city now, we rode over bumpy roads on very wide, very long roads designed entirely for cars in mind. Don't get me wrong the bike path was nice but the distances between buildings reminded me again of the prairies. It takes forever to get anywhere! I might find the streets of Hokkaido a little dull if things are this spread out, but then again we couldn't even scratch the surface of things before so maybe we won't feel like we're missing out as much.
We stopped twice for bike parts, Bryce getting a new tube to hold on reserve, I got a spoke wrench that I'm excited to try out. My rear wheel should be well tensioned, so I can go off of that. Next we headed to the hotel. We debated laundry tonight, but ultimately there were a few too many things to do and I'd rather enjoy myself, get to bed on time and then get up and do laundry over breakfast tomorrow. The hotel was lovely enough, with little surprises for later. First we needed a proper dinner.
Barbecue was on the mind, but we landed up at an izakaya. We ordered edamame, a green salad, chicken wings, a plate of assorted skewers and more hokkaido potatoes. The potatoes, again, were far and away the best part of the meal. The company was a group of red-faced salarymen watching a baseball game along with the rest of the staff who were also eagerly watching the action. The Izakaya had all sorts of baseball accoutrements which made watching fun. Normally I'd rather peel off my fingernails one by one then watch baseball, but with some friendly folks letting me know when to be excited with their cheering I can enjoy it. As we were leaving one man gave us some lemon candies he had and Bryce surprised him by having maple candies for everyone in the building, much to their delight.
Bryce needed to recoat his jacket, so we went to a parking lot and did that under a streetlight. It would need to dry overnight, another reason to do the laundry in the morning. I wanted a piece of the onsen on the top level. Inside there were three baths, two hot and one cold, with one of the hot baths being outside. I luxuriated outside by myself for some time in the cool air, as well as the hot bath indoors in the wood panelled room, and a sauna with a tv inside! All very nice. I took advantage of the cleaners and lotions available, and the freezer full of popsicles outside the onsen.
Back in the room, there was a fruit jelly waiting for us in the fridge which we enjoyed, a strawberry puree. But the treats weren't over yet, from 930-11pm we could enjoy the hotel's original late night ramen. Now this isn't something I want to have late at night normally, but this is exactly the kind of thing that makes me smile. Time limited free food? I'll set an alarm. The soup itself was nothing special, but the presentation and the fact I could have it in hotel jammies made it all the better. Truly, a good rest day. I could have done without the 20km ride in the wind, but I can't have everything I guess.

Hi Reddit, I’m not sure how the format of Reddit works so forgive me for any errors. I’m a 20 year old woman who’s been with an amazing man (20 as well) let’s call him A for almost a year. I’m gonna give you a brief history of our relationship and friendship before I continue. Me and A met in high school my freshman year his sophomore year and we did not get along. For a while we just hated each other and I’ll be honest he said some pretty horrible things to me back then but we ended up as friends after a little while. We started dating a few months after that and I thought things were good. That was far from the truth back then. He was still in love with his ex girlfriend L. L was his first love and they had been together for 2 years before they broke up when they went to high school. He ended up breaking up with me because “ I felt to much like a sister to him” and it broke my heart. I wasn’t over it for a long time and our friendship never recovered. After I got another boyfriend a few weeks later he called me a whore and told me to un alive myself because our relationship meant nothing to me. We didn’t talk again for 3 years I ended the other relationship after I graduated and got into a really toxic and abusive relationship with my ex-fiancé. While I was working at my retail job I ran into A again and we talked for a bit before he brought up that he needed help with a project that I actually knew a lot about and I offered to help for free. I went over the next day to help out and made dinner for him and his roommates because he admitted the last time he ate was a few days ago. I started going over regularly to hang out with him and his roommates because they were a cool group. We got together a little while later and he helped me move into his room at the apartment. We got our own place in December and things have been great. I found out I was pregnant January and we decided to keep him. I know I should be happy but I just can’t do it. I went through his Discord the other week I don’t know what I was looking for but it wasn’t him conversations with L he had a few months before we got back together in July. He told he was still in love with her and wanted to be with her still but he “ promised himself he wouldn’t do that to himself again” and she shared the same sentiments. That was the last thing they said to each other he blocked her when we got back together. I talked to him about it and he told me that it was because she was easy and comfortable to him. That it was all he knew because they stayed on and off even after high school. He told me he wants nothing to do with her because he loves me and has no feels for her anymore. That I’m the mother of his children and I never hurt him like L did. I want to believe him It’s just something that keeps me up at night and I feel like I stole A from L and I’m some kind of home wreaker in my own relationship. I love A he’s an amazing boyfriend and he’s so excited for our son but I just feel gross sometimes about it. How do I make it go away? I love A so much and I never really stopped loving him after high school. Thanks for reading I know I’m probably just going crazy because of the baby but I wanted to let it out finally.

34F here. I love reading about love and dating, especially on Reddit, and I've noticed this pervasive sentiment that women go on dates just for a "free meal" or date much older guys for money. Personally, I don't think there are that many women who do this—I've never met one in real life. Men often underestimate how painful it is to spend time with someone you're not attracted to just for a "free meal."
I don't like to generalize or adhere to traditional roles. I believe who "should pay" depends on various factors like economics and culture, and it's definitely not a man's duty. That said, when I go out on dates, I'm terrified of the guy thinking I'm expecting him to pay or that I'm dating him for some materialistic reason, especially if it's obvious he makes more money than me. This fear leads me to always pay more than my fair share.
I want to be the "cool girl" but end up feeling resentful for always overcompensating. It feels like the more you give, the more the other person will take. In my dating and friendship experiences, I've rarely encountered reciprocity. Often, the dynamic falls into "you clearly like to give, so I'll take advantage of that."
I understand it's my fault for over-giving from the start when no one asked me to. But yeah, it's a struggle for me to find a balance when it comes to these things. Anyone else feel the same? How do you manage these fears and find balance?

Having my career taken away from me and disability insurance. Will live a nice stress-free life. I get three days into accepting I build scaffolding in the carpenters union and no job site. Will let anyone with cataplexy be able to be just out of liability alone
So I know we’ll be the poster boy for my nonprofit of narcolepsy awareness and hope to create multiple others such as research and help people through the process of testing and after due to not working and maybe still having a family like myself did thru this.
As well as appeal company that donates percentage of profits back and be the only place that I make money because everything else. Will go as it should, and I will be different in the sense of a nonprofit and show where all the money goes without being asked, just simply presented on the platforms of my nonprofit page and how much we’ve invested into.
The only thing I will here is my term for us if you guys like it cause I do plural is narcalites
As well as I do believe being on amphetamines and or methylphenidate hydrochloride such as ADHD meds caused narcolepsy and many others
There should be more restrictions put on for kids not to be on and I feel can be proven already For restrictions. In the matter of a dopamine deficiency, considering the only study I can find which was provided to me by a doctor because they have access to more. 1 year on 2 years off to take dopamine to get back to the same level you are ignorant to think that this isn’t messing with kids, brain chemistry, and Greatly can give us an answer on the Unknown. And at the end of the day, they’re creating drug addict considering it’s already titled highly addictive and they restrictions put in place allow people like myself to be on 60 mg a day as a fifth grader without any say.
Simply look at when this medication came out and the increase in narcolepsy diagnosis from those kids growing into adults. It’s a huge peak as well as just keeps getting bigger every year. Hmmmmmmmm wonder y why And how is it a dumb carpenter figured this out.
I’ll tell you, I am not against the medication I think if properly put out there such as 18 years old and minimum of 15 years old anything other than that extreme cases and I mean extreme such as narcolepsy in a child not ADHD. A hugely ADD. Myself obviously yes it will be hard. However, I wish I learned to cope with them at 18. Decide for myself if I wanted to help. I need the help. For a while I was accused of being a drug addict till I found out actually it’s narcolepsy that’s why I needed more or it wasn’t because it not being treated properly now I’m proper treatment. I’m sorry but I just can’t ask why. Not a yes man. Never have been never will.
And reason for me being poster boy is because you tell me a better one than a division one wrestler winning multiple state titles throughout the childhood working double shifts in the carpenters union all the time out of sheer will power and adrenaline. to when finding out pregnant really feeling the first actual stress of my life that stress not bad to have it comes with life although causing my narcolepsy to be so so bad
And I know you guys can understand the statement of it’s very hard to tell going through life if something happened in a dream or didn’t or just déjà vu well I’ve learned not to just go with and I’m not insaneb I’m a vivid dream Think about that with normal sleep to distress, causing me to only sleep in and out without medication for longest period of time a month and a half able to stay up for four hours so yes I do believe awareness needs to be out there, especially when it’s the last thing on the list they test for at least causing two years of hell
And if I have done anything wrong in this post I do not want to change any of what it is about but the creators of this platform please when blocking my post from being seen inform me what to change. Because I feel I’m doing nothing but good for us the narcalites And only bettering us as a whole because I fear for the next case like mine to give up or the ones that I’ve already have and maybe ended up dead from her car wreck or resulted to drugs, I refused

Paul caught the ball in midair and immediately threw it at full speed toward the goal. The BUZZ of the goal sounded almost at the same time as Paul's communicator. Paul wiped sweat from his forehead as he high fived Tom and looked down at his communicator. His heart skipped three beats. He had been matched. His heart pounded more and more as he read your profile. His jaw visibly dropped when he got to your photo.
"Hey man! What's up?" Mark, another friend, walked up to Paul and clapped him on the back as he looked over Paul's shoulder. He immediate saw what was 'up' and he let out a dramatic. "Damn... son! Good for you!"
The rest of the guys ran up to peep over Paul's shoulder. Various comments filtered through. "She is fucking gorgeous," "Holy fucking shit dude," and "You lucky bastard," were some of them.
Finally the guys got back to the game, but Paul's mind never left the profile on his phone or the photo. His head was in the clouds and amongst the stars the rest of the day as he showered after the game, ate dinner, and worked half-heartedly on his usually consuming research.
Paul and the other three guys that he shared quarters with finally went to bed. He took one more glance at your profile as the lights went out and he tucked himself into his twin-sized bunk cut out from the wall. He drifted off peacefully to sleep to the gentle hum of the engines. He dreamed of the woman in his match message, his future mate. At around 2:00 a.m., the bulge between his legs swelled as he dreamed. The soft fabric of his pajama pants shifted and rose, and rose, and rose... Soon his bedsheets were a mountain in the darkness of the bed quarters. And Paul dreamed even more vividly of his mate. The bulging mountain tensed and shuddered visibly. And then again. And again even more powerfully. A moment later, wetness soaked his pajama bottoms and then the bedsheets over them. The wetness flowed and spread. More, and more and more, until it oozed to cover a large portion of the lower half of the bed. It was another beautiful day on the alien planet. It was the day Paul and the other male passengers of the Ares arrived. Paul waved goodbye to his friends as he followed the map on his datapad to your home. He passed an elk like creature with antlers almost the size of its body that was grazing between the huge trees. Paul's jaw almost never left the grown as his eyes passed from one alien wonder to the next. Finally he arrived outside your front door, his heart racing. He knocked twice. His deep voice followed. "Hello. It's Paul, Paul Stevens."
Hello! I thought it would be fun to set a smutty, romantic romp on an alien world.
I was also toying with the idea of our characters being somehow genetically enhanced to make them sexy as fuck, which explains Paul's absurd statistics early in the prompt. I am happy to discuss that though. Perhaps they are just hot from centuries of natural selection. Perhaps they were engineered from birth to be perfect space colonists, or perhaps they were given genetic treatment while in cryostasis on the journey, or we can totally ignore the issue and just have them be hot for hotness sake! I do like the idea of our characters being very attractive though. I also have to say I am a HUGE fan of big boobs and big booties.
I know I wrote your part in second person, and mine in third person. I am happy to write my character in either first or third person. I am also happy to write the parts of third party characters that flit in and out of our story, and I would be happy if you also share the burden!
Another idea that might be fun to explore is if additional "mates" are added to our "family" at some point. Not sure on this, happy to hear your thoughts if you are interested.

At my worst I would take 3-5 double strength laxatives in a day, well over the recommended daily dose and this went on for about a year.
When I quit cold turkey, it was hard to restore my digestive health, but with dietary and behavioral changes, after about a week of initial bloating and constipation, I now can pass bowel movements daily and with no issue.
Disclaimer: I'm in no way endorsing this as a save all solution to lax abuse, however the methods I outline may be a starting point for harm reduction and recovery
In a day, my diet consists of:
And wherever I can, I incorporate fermented foods high in probiotics with my meals, such as sauerkraut and kimchi, along with eating foods high in fibre to go with the amount of probiotics I'm consuming.
As for behavioural changes, I made sure to chew thoroughly and slowly to reduce any extra gas bloating.
The first two weeks are uncomfortable and tough and it's tempting to pop a lax to make it all go away, but instead, go for Simethicone pills to help with the bloating. It won't mess up your digestive system and as a bonus, it makes your breath smell minty!
I hope that in writing this, I can help other people in a similar situation. You can do it! I believe in you.
