2024.05.21 22:37 SidledsGunnar FAQ

THE BASICS

Q. I've listened to today's album but why I can't rate it?
A. That's by design. You won't be able to submit your review and star rating until the next day's album is generated, around approximately 3AM GMT.
Q. Can I have more than one album per day generated?
A. No, the site was designed to be one per day. Some users have created a second or third project in order to have more than one a day.
Q. Who decided I needed to hear this album? Who created this list? Was this a user-submitted album?
A. The first 1089 albums you'll hear are taken from the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. The list was compiled by Robert Dimery, along with a team of music critics.
The user-submitted albums are optional (to submit and to listen to) only once you've finished the original 1089.
Q. 1089 albums... huh? I thought it was 1001?
A. There have been several editions of the book. Each time, some albums are removed in favour of newer albums. The generator includes any album as long as it was in at least one edition of the book. As of 2024, this is 1089 albums total.
Q. What happens if I don't visit the website for awhile?
A. Your account will pause automatically if you don't visit the site or rate an album for 5 days in a row. However, pressing the "Did Not Listen" button counts as activity, and your account will stay active.
You can also pause and unpause your account whenever you want from the Info tab in the menu.
Q. What happens if I push "Did Not Listen"? Will the album get generated for me later or is it lost forever?
A. Neither, it will be listed on your History page, where you can rate it any time.
Additionally, once you select "Did Not Listen," the next album will be generated.
Q. If I've already listened to some of the albums beforehand, can I mark them as complete so they won't be generated for me?
A. No, unfortunately there is no way to do that.
Q. Where can I see the entire list of albums?
A. The best way would be to support the book's creators and purchase a physical copy of the book. You can also visit this unofficial site but it hasn't been updated for the most recent edition of the book. This List Challenges quiz is currently the most up-to-date list online.
If you don't mind looking at some code, the generator's site map shows the full list as well.

CHANGES AND EDITS

Q. Can I change a rating or edit my review?
A. Not on your own on the site. DM with your project name and the rating you'd like changed.
Q. How can I shut off weekend albums?
A. DM your project name and ask him to do this.
Q. I originally decided to exclude a certain genre of music but I've changed my mind! How can I get it back?
A. DM your project name and ask him to do this.
Q. How can I show people my project?
A. Use the URL in your address bar after navigating to the Summary page from the main menu. It's advised not to give out the URL with your actual project name, as anyone will be able to go in and add reviews to anything you haven't rated yet, or delete any draft reviews you have.
Q. How can I reinstall the web app?
A. If you go to the browser's menu there is usually something like "Download" or "Install app." It's a Progressive Web App (PWA), so if you can't find it, Google "how to install pwa on [your browser]."

GROUPS

Q. How does it work going from an individual project to group?
A. If you are the creator of the group and your project already had more than 5 albums generated, there is a checkbox whether you want to include those albums in the group history or not.
By default this is not checked. This means that your group will "start over" and get all albums generated again. You'll get duplicates and you can rate them again. Your individual project history will have some albums twice, but the group page will only have them once.
If you did click that checkbox, then those albums will appear in the group history page. Those who join the group will then get an option to earn them into their history and catch up. You won't get any duplicates and the group will never get them generated.
Basically no matter how you created it, your family members won't miss out on any! It's just a matter of whether they have to catch up via a backlog or if you all want to listen to all albums as a group.
Q. How can I turn on weekend albums in my group?
A. DM your project name and ask him to do this.
Q. I'm in a group but can't rate the albums from the group page?
A. Correct, you rate albums from your own page. The group page is just for showing your groups stats (rating for each album, favourite genre, etc).

OTHER

Q. The streaming link was to an extended edition. Should I listen to the extra material?
A. Stick to the original unless you're in the mood for some extra stuff. Feel free to report it here and u/SidledsGunnar will change the link so it goes to the original version.
Q. What is the Controversial Artists section on my page all about?
A. These are artists whose albums you rated very differently. For example, if you loved Hunky Dory but hated Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie will show up as one of your controversial artists.
Q. What if I can't find an album to listen to it?
A. YouTube often has music missing from other streaming platforms. Otherwise, it's up to you. You can leave it unrated on your history page, or you can rate it and note you couldn't find it. So far, every single album has been tracked down by other users, though.
Q. Is there an API?
A. Yep, it's pretty basic, though. See it here.
Q. Who made this generator and how can I support it?
A. Reddit user u/SidledsGunnar created this and runs it on his own. If you'd like to contribute to help keep the site running, you have a few options: Patreon / Paypal / Ko-Fi / Bitcoin Wallet number: 3KVcBJpB2K1WcG5qu9rae822SxfgbQoPc8
You can also support u/SidledsGunnar by purchasing albums from the Rough Trade links on the site as he gets a small commission from each sale.

2024.05.21 22:36 Dry_Main_6489 401k Funds Allocation - ADP

Hi all.
I'm fairly new to the US - only been here 5 years, so I'm a bit behind in the game with my 401k. I am currently 32.
My friends were commenting today about how their 401k personal rate of return is 14% thus far in the year. I checked mine and it was a dismal 1.66% in the last year.
My company uses ADP and I am currently invested in Goldman Sachs Core Fixed Income Fund (Ticker: GCFIX)
My work provides matching up to 2% so I am taking advantage. I am doing the minimum contribution because I have some high interest debt I am paying off.
I was wondering if I could get advice on which funds I could best allocate my contributions to.
My friends have a different service provider; they are currently doing a mix of Vanguard large, medium and small stocks. I do not see those options on my plan.
Here is what is available to me:
Goldman Sachs Financial Square Government Fund - Class A Ticker: FSOXX
Goldman Sachs Core Fixed Income Fund - Class A Ticker: GCFIX
MFS Conservative Allocation Fund - Class R3 Ticker: MACNX
MFS Moderate Allocation Fund - Class R3 Ticker: MAMHX
MFS Growth Allocation Fund - Class R3 Ticker: MAGEX
Putnam Large Cap Value Fund - Class A Ticker: PEYAX
Fidelity 500 Index Fund Ticker: FXAIX
Goldman Sachs Large Cap Core Fund - Class A Ticker: GSCGX
JPMorgan US Equity Fund - Class R3 Ticker: JUEPX
Vanguard 500 Index Fund - Admiral Class Ticker: VFIAX
Goldman Sachs Mid Cap Growth Fund - Class A Ticker: GGOAX
Invesco Discovery Mid Cap Growth Fund - Class R Ticker: OEGNX
Franklin Small Cap Value Fund - Class R Ticker: FVFRX
Invesco Small Cap Equity Fund - Class A Ticker: SMEAX
Goldman Sachs International Equity ESG Fund - Class A Ticker: GSIFX
Victory RS Global Fund - Class A Ticker: RSGGX
Goldman Sachs Emerging Markets Equity Fund - Class A Ticker: GEMAX
Fidelity Advisor Financials Fund - Class A Ticker: FAFDX
Goldman Sachs Real Estate Securities Fund - Class A Ticker: GREAX

2024.05.21 22:30 Silent-Suspect5604 one of my girls just passed away

it happened really really quickly for which i’m so grateful for, but it was also so unexpected that i don’t really know what to say. i was sitting on my bed right next to the cage when i heard kinda digging sounds so i looked over wanting to see who it was, when i saw my sweet girl daisy all sprawled out. she was still moving at that time & im sorry to say i just froze because i immediately knew this was not a position a normal healthy rat would take. i wish i had moved in that moment, had taken her out immediately, just anything, but i froze.
she made three weird tiny sounds, it wasn’t like a cough or a sneeze, i can’t really describe it, and immediately two of her sisters ran over to investigate but i think by that moment she was already gone. i’m honestly so shocked, but doing the maths it’s been 15 months since i brought my girls home & they were already a couple months old at that point, so maybe i shouldn’t be so shocked? but they never really grew that big (rescue situation) and they’ve never once showed signs of aging and slowing that this just hit me.
i just feel so guilty because ive been down with a lung infection since last week & i couldn’t do anything for them. i just barely got out of bed to feed and change the water and i felt so so so awful that i couldn’t clean them properly or let them out, i finally felt better a bit today and thought i might do it on thursday, and now this happened. i was looking for pictures to attach so i could show everyone my beautiful daisy but i rlly am not one to take pictures which i regret so badly now so my words are all i have.
daisy was one of three of my white girls, she wasn’t entirely white, she had one tiny fleck of grey between her head and shoulder blades & those adorable dumbo ears. she always liked to climb the most, honestly sometimes id find her hanging basically upside down and she’s the reason i really entirely changed up the set up so we could include even more climbing. first thing she’d do during free roam was climb up on the cage and survey the situation. she didn’t like to be held much, but when she had something to munch on you could scratch behind her ears. yesterday i gave them cucumber slices, and she sat right at the door and i did just that & i just didn’t think it would be the last time i’d get to do it.
i guess this is tonight’s cautionary tale to hold your babies a little tighter and appreciate every second just a little more and to take those silly videos and pictures even if they don’t look good. make that short time count.

2024.05.21 22:30 aznpersuazion Artificial Intelligence is NOT a Good Career

As with most things, the opinions expressed in this post are my own. Consider this as just one data point, and not as a guide to your career.
I've been working in the Data/AI space for 5 years now and I've seen hundreds of starry eyed people wanting to work in A.I. because they want to work with the latest and coolest cutting edge technology. But I want to share with you a few reasons why A.I. is not a good career choice.
  1. A.I. positions could end up like the "data scientist" position. Looking at the history of the data scientist position, in 2010-2020, the hype around data science made it so that millions of people flocked to that position. Companies eventually realized that most them actually didn't need data science, and the impact of the position didn't always help them profit. The demand of the job has plummeted in recent years, leaving millions of aspiring data scientists unemployed or needing to pursue a different career.
  2. A.I. positions will be less than .0001% of tech engineering jobs. In the next few decades, the demand for software and data engineering roles will be much more needed at most companies that A.I. roles. Only a small group companies will a be pursuing A.I. initiatives, while the majority of companies will still need software and data engineers. But because 90% of tech news is A.I. related, there will be a massive influx of people trying to enter the space.
  3. The barriers to entry are huge. To pursue a career in A.I. and machine learning. A person's understanding of statistics and software engineering need to be extremely high. To get to that level of knowledge requires much more dedication and studying than most people imagine. Becoming a decent software engineer or data professional is already difficult for the average person.
Before you decide to pursue this as a career, it's important to consider some of the cons listed below. Perhaps consider taking a smaller step first and trying to land a job as a software engineer or data analyst. If you're already in a technical field, consider not putting all your eggs into one basket, and making sure you know enough skills to stay gainfully employed in the job market.

2024.05.21 22:29 ButtMath Fun Ways to Make Mechs Better

There seems to be a good amount of conversation today about issues with mechs and whether they're usable. As an avid mech player, who the mech was a huge reason to keep leveling, I use it whenever applicable, but I do so knowing that there is a lot to be improved (better targeting with missiles, unnecessarily long cool down time, limited applicability, the addition of mech modularity, etc.)
My post isn't to highlight the functional, common-sense fixes, which definitely need to happen, but talk more about useful and fun additions to make mechs more desirable slot options.
The below ideas are just a few I've come up with during my time playing Helldivers 2, but feel free to add on:
  1. Mechs drop with a backpack. A la the Fallout Amazon series. The backpack would contain a partial reload (50%) for the machine gun and rocket launcher, as well as an "armor patch," which would heal the mech by up to a 1/3 of its health. The backpack would take (x) seconds to deploy, and the action would either be performed by the pilot, or they could drop the pack to another player, enabling the mech to provide cover while being reloaded/patched.
This would help address the mech's longevity and functionality while offering balance, as the pilot has to dedicate a backpack slot to the mech's upkeep, the mech can't move while being repaired/reloaded, and the time for the action to occur (presumably out of combat).
  1. Ride the mech. The mechs are faster than they appear, and providing up to one player with the option of clinging on to the mech's back offers some interesting potential. For one, allowing players to mount the mech would occupy a hand slot (the player has to grab on somehow), which would free up a single hand.
With one hand, the player riding the mech could fire from a fixed position over or around the mech with one-handed weapons (providing a passive buff to one-handed weapon utility), keeping the mech safe from enemies that sneak up from the mech's blind spots.
Additionally, players riding the mech could throw grenades or stratagems.
  1. Plush mech interiors. When I first unlocked the mech, I had the (unreasonable?) expectation that there would be a cozy interior to the mech (e.g. screens showing ammo count, health, armor remaining, speed, etc), but players are locked in a third person perspective. It would be awesome to see how Arrowhead envisions the mech's interior, and I could even see a first-person view serving as a potential fix to the missile problem.
  2. Mech go BOOM! The mechs in Helldivers live short lives, and they are often abandoned on the battlefield to either be destroyed or run across while escaping hordes of enemies, but what if the mechs could be made to explode?
Much like the undetonated hellbombs littering the landscape, the mech operator should have the ability to set their mech to detonate, offering an explosive reward about half the size of an environmental hellbomb.
In the same way that players can set rate-of-fire and scope distance, mech pilots should be able to set a timed mech detonation or a reactive detonation (shooting the mech with an explosive weapon causes it to violently explode). I could imagine some creative bile titan kills or tactical explosions (the robot drone ship factories).

2024.05.21 22:26 FatherOfReddit Really Need Advice on "Taking The Leap" - 1 year out of college and feel like a corporate brokie

Please, only serious answers only.
I'm in a bad place.
I've been working for the past year and have saved 0 money.
Yes, this is my fault, but I also needed to purchase some basic necessities. I have a nice bed, a nice desk, nice clothes, great shoes, a good set of shirts, a great microphone and camera, a nice desktop, etc.
Basically I own everything I need to be presentable and start an online business.
I did exceptionally well in my 1st year of work - going from a small BDR patch job to a regional BDR for our company's East Coast (I work in a publicly-traded tech company).
I am interested in Higher Ed as a field and have always wanted to build EdTech.
I have skills as a BDR, Inbound Closer, Designer, Marketer, Writer, and know some people in the VC World.
I will be moving to San Francisco in August to be with some friends. This is a non-negotiable.
I'm not sure what I want to do but it's definitely not this corporate job. I'm working 8 hours and I can feel myself wasting so much time and potential.
I want to get right, be responsible, and take full control back over my life but I'm not sure how to do it.
I feel like I have given all of myself away to this company and I haven't saved any money so I'm not sure how I'm going to do this.
In a month my lease at my place ends. I'll have around $2000 and exactly 1 month to do whatever I need to be set up for living in SF at $1600ish per month.
I have a couple people interested in hiring me for my skills, either full time or as a consultant, and I'm thinking of charging each of them $6000/mo for services, and find 3-5 companies to work for. That would be a win for me but I'm not sure how to present and sell myself like that because I've only ever sold other peoples' products.
Living with parents for a month is an option but I don't really want to do that unless I have to. Would rather travel, live in a hostel, and be far away from Bay Area for a month since I have almost no real travel experience.
Can I just send it? Is it safe to take the jump and just say f-it to everyone trying to tell me otherwise?
I don't know if there's any other way for me to truly free myself than to just say F it and see what happens.
I honestly don't care what happens i just have people who depend on me and they're the only reason why I haven't left yet - They expect me to move into SF in August.
Thanks, hope I can get some decent advice.

2024.05.21 22:26 CrocsAreBabyShoes Understanding Uber Rental Payments: For Neurodivergence & those who may have Dyscalculia...and Everybody Else!

Understanding Uber Rental Payments: For Neurodivergence & those who may have Dyscalculia...and Everybody Else!
[To Neurotypicals: We know it is hard to imagine, let alone fathom what Autism/ADHD et. al. are like to have. I'm not the type that will give you a hard time, nor will I waste a lot of time explaining what a Psychiatrist, Google, and YouTube could.]
[To Neurodivergents: Please let'em make it LOL.]
I'm going to keep this as brief as possible:
If you choose to rent, know that you should have and keep a one week payment in your account, preferably from the day you start renting...At All Times! (Plus gas/charge money so that the vehicle is at the agreed upon levels required when returned.)
-*Get the main insurance if you trust yourself to not get a flat, etc. But even though you aren't required to have either, GET THE MAIN ONE! (bumper to bumper) Be paranoid, because if you don't have personal insurance to cover injury to yourself, Uber WILL NOT cover that--Only Passengers!*-
Special Note on EV's: Non-Tesla chargers aren't all that plentiful, so make sure to charge at about 70-100 miles of range left. No need to take chances and end up with a dead battery. Try to charge to 100% at the end of the night because you will be charging almost twice a day, if not.
It is cheaper to charge EV's, but lack of chargers will kind of make it seem irrelevant. Go for the membership if the charging company has it. It's cheaper. Research the EV you get!
What follows, is a copy paste from the document I made of the first six weeks of rental:
Basically, payments are a week behind, but not taken until two days after each [Insert Day of the Week You Are DUE. Mine is Wednesday.]
Week is counted 7 days from the day of. Example: May 8 is one day May 9-13 are the other 6 days of that week.

*Payments MAY be taken on the Due Date!*
**Need to have a payment sitting in the account!*\*

Agreement started: May 8, 2024 (Copy & Insert your dates)

Week 1:
May 8-14
Due: May 15

Week 1 Taken May 17: Paid

Week 2:
May 15-21
Due: May 22
Week 2 Taken May 24:

Week 3:
May 22-28
Due: May 29

Week 3 Taken May 31:

Week 4:
May 29-Jun 4
Due: June 5

Week 4 Taken June 7:

Week 5:
Jun 5-11
Due: June 12

Week 5 Taken June 14:

Week 5:
Jun 12-18
Due: June 19

Week 6 Taken June 21:

Again, for Neurotypicals this isn't that difficult of a concept, but for us, it can be torturous and disheartening.
I really hope this helps someone. If you have any questions--feel free to ask.

The lecture was supposed to be on Rationality 101, apparently not for Newcomers only. Serene was there to have her back but G was having a hard time focusing.
The boring black uniform more fitting for a hotel receptionist defaced the godlike beauty standing in front of a huge screen. Gentry couldn’t believe her eyes: this was the man she had her hands on a little while ago?
No, it couldn’t be.
It had been just an avatar, too perfect in its unblemished visage, too pure for this world. Yet the man whose face she remembered as if it was etched on the back of her eyelids, who she’d been constantly thinking about, who her hands itched to snatch, was standing right there, in the flesh.
Back in the dreamy simulated world she caught herself thinking that a trim waist like this couldn’t anatomically work on a human, yet here he was: a towering spread of fit shoulders perfectly balanced above the flexible whip of his midsection. The light-grey eyes that betrayed every movement of his pupils were as real as the ones that reflected the mock moon during her test. Below them lay the sharp slope of the cheekbones one could cut themselves on.
The only thing a bit different, apart from the outfit choice, was the young god’s hair. In the simulation, it was flowing and probably too long to be practical. This person’s mane was much shorter and fell down his neck in a neat ponytail, tastefully tamed with a single hairpin.
She had to get her hands on this treasure.
He was making last minute preparations for the lecture, looking through the papers on the desk, dark strands framing his face, light grey eyes sharp in careful concentration.
Professor Q, huh.
He said this was his name, and so did the note on the lecture hall door.
She was sure it was the man who had melted in her arms making the most delicious sounds a male throat could produce.
Had he recognised her?
Unlikely.
At the time of the simulation session, she didn’t have a camera that could pick up her facial features but just to be on the safe side, she decided to go by “G” in his class. There were bound to be lots of people with a name starting with a G, right? What would be the odds it was this particular newcomer that Q had tested that would end up in his class?
The man finally lifted his eyes at the audience and a gentle smile momentarily graced his features before disappearing as if he didn’t see someone he’d expected to.
The holoboard on the wall behind him obediently lit up following his nonchalant gesture. Gentry found it annoying that one needed a pair of special glasses to see all the augmented reality stuff and really navigate the city but again, with Sereen’s help she had more or less gotten used to it in the couple of days she had to deal with the necessities like settling down, getting food and finding her way around Ashtapada.
Still, could they use a piece of chalk or, at least, a marker to write on the board? No need to show off your Fully Automated Luxury Space Communism tech just to write a couple of notes on the board!
On second thought, high-tech-crazy or not, if this city brought up men like this one, she would definitely do her best to stay here to… reap the benefits!
They took a desk next to a huge clear floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the winter garden.
“Professor Q seems a little distracted today,” Sereen said, swiftly tapping a couple of buttons on G’s wrist to show her how to confirm that she was attending the lecture. “He’s usually much more chatty and friendly. I wonder what got into him.”
“Is he?” Gentry responded with an artificial air of indifference. “I just hope he’s more open to a discussion than that Poe guy.”
“He is! And Professor Poe isn’t that bad,” Sereen reprimanded before chuckling a little — since his little secret became known to students, he became known as Holopoe. “Just wait and see, it’s gonna be a blast. Q’s lectures are always very engaging.”
It proved to be utter bullshit.
After fiddling with the symbols on the interactive screen for ten minutes into the class, students getting more and more agitated behind his back, the lecturer seemed to give up. Turning back to the audience, he absentmindedly nodded to a couple of people in the lecture hall and sighed with a painfully fake smile.
“For today’s class, we are going to need to read a certain extract from a book,” he said, tone apologetic for some reason, but it solidified G’s conviction that she already knew this person. “I’ve just sent it to each of your wristcomms. We’ll have some quiet time and read it by ourselves, alright?”
“Reading from the comm?” Sereen mumbled to herself. “Couldn’t he just print them out?”
The rest of the students’ grumbles showed that they shared her disappointment. Q could only hopelessly smile again before returning to his work on the board.
Reading from the little semi-transparent screens was indeed torture. Quickly giving up on trying to awkwardly use gestures for scrolling through the text, she looked out of the window to entertain herself with the garden outside. From the modest height they were sitting at, the people below were quite discernible, partly hidden by the greenery, spread here and there in small groups and pairs. Gentry longed to be there, too. What was the use of being here with the most attractive person in the whole world if the only thing she could see was his back?
Well, the back didn’t look half bad, if she was honest, and what was below also pleased the eye.
But still. It would soon bore even the most easily entertained.
Her gaze fell to a small clearing where a lone male figure was sitting, writing something in a notebook. By the looks of it, the notebook was a real paper-made thing without the bells and whistles usual for Ashtapada. The next thing G noticed was a pair of slender legs, barefoot, stretched to dip the toes into the clear water of the artificial stream.
God bless the urban designers of this place!
The figure lifted the head and in an inconceivably graceful motion, swung the long blond bangs away from the face.
G straightened her back. Was it... Ok, maybe Q was the most handsome man she’d seen in her life but this... This was the younger boy she’d noticed a couple of days back, the one in a plaid skirt, shamelessly flirting with everyone within reach. Today, he wasn’t wearing one but the blue jeans hugging his thighs, rolled up almost to the knees, presented a picture just as tantalizing. Even with the hair was a completely different colour, even though the half-up, half-down style kept his face hidden, she was absolutely certain it was the same person.
Just you wait, young beauty, as soon as this “lecture” was over, your princess in shining armour was coming to pick you up!
Suddenly snapping out of the dull weariness, she turned on the auglasses S helped her obtain earlier and tapped away on her comm screen.
What a chance to give the local text sharing feature a go!
“The garden is pretty, but with a blossom like you, it is truly breathtaking. I wonder if anyone has picked this sweet flower or if anyone dares to,” she typed a cheesy note and folded the message into a neat 3D figurine of an origami paper crane with her fingers in the air.
Was S watching? Screw it, even if she was, she couldn’t read the message with her glasses off, right?
Carefully aiming the device at the lone figure, she launched the crane downwards, and it fluttered like a weightless butterfly in spirals, through the glass and right into the young man’s lap, not disturbing the notebook pages. He started at first at the intrusion but then turned his own glasses on and unfolded the message. A shy smile appeared on his plump lips, and he looked flattered, turning his head around to see if the sender was in sight. Catching no one, he typed something below the initial message and deftly folded it back into a crane that, to G’s surprise, flew directly at her, in uneven spirals along the wall. The man traced it with a smile, propping himself back on his arms, his whole slim body and face on full display now.
God, was he good-looking.
Easily passing the physical border of the glass again, the crane crashed into Gentry’s wristcomm, dutifully delivering the message and betraying her tactical position at the same time. An amused kind of surprise showed on the young man’s face and he waved at her to show that she had been exposed. She waved back, trying to look nonchalant but probably failing miserably.
Very smooth, G, way to go.
The message read, “Is a flower only good for looking at? Not this one.”
Oooh, this boy was playing with fire!
“Hey, G,” Sereen nudged. “Have you finished reading?”
“Mm? Oh, yeah.” Gentry lied easily. She had skimmed the first couple of paragraphs and was sure she’d be able to come up with something if asked.
“Done everybody?” the deep gentle voice called from the holoboard and G’s attention snapped back to the dignified face.
The class murmured affirmatively.
“I’m sorry today’s lecture isn’t as fun as usual,” he admitted. “I must say I’m still unsure how to approach such complex topic as this one. But with your help, I hope we’ll figure it out.”
Everyone seemed to perk up.
“You just read an extract on paradoxes,” Q went on. “And you might be wondering why we are raising a philosophical topic on a rational thinking course.”
“There you go,” Sereen whispered. “He’s back to normal!”
G humphed. This did seem interesting. Was it a good idea to read the extract after all?
Q continued, “In the text, you might have encountered the definition of a paradox. Would anyone explain it with their own words?”
A raised hand and the lecturer’s nod brought some courageous soul to their feet.
“It’s when you start with the correct premises, use consistent logic but wind up with an impossible conclusion,” they said. “There are three types: falsidical, veridical and antimony-type, which are...”
“Correct,” Q smiled and nodded the person back down. It was a smile worth starting a thousand wars over.
“Now there’s a reason why I asked you to read about them. Why do you think people have been fascinated with paradoxes for such a long time?”
S raised her hand and received a kind invitation.
“I might be wrong,” she said. “But it seems that they point at the limitations of our thinking, things that seem rational but in fact aren’t. We feel that with our all-conquering logic we can solve any puzzle but it’s not always the case. Right?”
“This is very insightful,” the teacher confirmed. “It is believed by many that what’s rational is true and therefore what rationality cannot explain must be false.”
“I definitely know someone who would die on that hill,” Gentry grumbled under her breath.
“I’m sorry?” Q asked. “Is there something you wanted to add... sorry, I don’t know your name?”
Still half mad with professor Poe, Gentry stood up. “It’s G, I’m a Newcomer. I was saying how a human mind can fool itself into thinking it knows what it looks at as long as it makes sense. But in reality, it’s not there, like the sky.”
That was the only thing she remembered from that last lecture! She felt the tips of her ears heat up but the kind and considering look on Q’s face showed her gamble paid off.
“These are very insightful observations, G, why don’t we try exploring them together?” — he waived her to sit down and turned back to the class — “Five minutes to discuss how paradoxes might reveal the weaknesses of rational thinking. Send your answers to the board when you’re done.”
“Whoa, daring as usual,” Sereen smiled. “I knew you’d enjoy his class.”
“Now, consider these two questions,” Q said to another student who stood up at his hand wave. “If an unstoppable force meets an indestructible object, what is going to happen?”
The person seemed to contemplate it for a while and the teacher didn’t rush him.
“Isn’t it one of those which are impossible to solve because the existence of the one automatically disproves the existence of the other?”
Q nodded, “Correct. The second one about the barber in a small town is of the same sort. Sereen?”
S stood up too, “The one that shaves all and only men that don’t shave themselves?”
“Yes,” he confirmed. “At first, a premise like this seems perfectly reasonable, doesn’t it?”
“It does,” S responded, somewhat rashly. “But it’s clear that a barber like this cannot exist.”
“Wait, really?” Gentry whispered as Q nodded in satisfaction and urged her friend to go on.
“Yes, if we ask ourselves if this barber shaves himself. If he doesn’t, then he is part of the group which he does shave that do not shave themselves, but if he is in this group, then he does shave himself which makes it impossible for him to be this barber by definition.”
While the rest of the class was catching up with the logic, Q’s smile got only wider, more inviting.
“What does it tell us about the nature of the premise then?” he asked.
“That although it seems that it sounds logical on the surface, it is in fact nonsense and we don’t even need to hear the rest of the riddle to discard it completely,” S concluded.
The man chuckled.
“Well, I wouldn’t be that brash, to be honest, but on balance, you’re right,” he said. “If you stay after the lecture, I might recommend a couple of books on the topic. Your Newcomer friend is welcome to stay, too.”
G put up the best of the aloof fronts, “I’d be happy to, Professor.”
“Q is fine,” he smiled again and went on addressing the rest of the class that immediately exploded into a heated discussion.
***
“Basically, what I think we’re supposed to learn from this,” S concluded after a while, standing up so that everyone could hear her. “Is that before applying rationality, we have to make sure that all the premises we are dealing with are in fact realistic. Otherwise, there is no way rational thinking will help us.”
“Excellently put, as always,” Q applauded. “I’d love to see if everyone agrees or has something else to add to the discussion but our time is up. Feel free to write me a letter with your reflections on the topic.”
As interesting as the class was, the urge to leave the premises as soon as the teacher dismissed everyone seemed to be universal and applicable even to the Ashtapadans.
“I have to go now,” Sereen said. “Text you later, ok?” And with a reciprocal nod to Q, disappeared in the doors, joining the rest of the students.
Sadly, she couldn’t recall what they were talking about after the lecture, nor what titles Professor recommended for some home reading. She just hoped she didn’t make a fool of herself.
What Gentry did remember though was that after Q left as well and she came up to the panoramic window, Sereen and the mysterious flower boy were leaving the garden together. And it was hard not to notice that her new friend took off her wristcomm before they took off, and hid it in the tall grass.

2024.05.21 22:22 chocolatetouch In the grim darkness....there is only smut (fan writing)

This is, perhaps, the first little nugget of something I've been laughing in my head about a long time. It's a series about Malcador power-bottoming his way around the castle while keeping his identity secret (or, trying to) during the siege.
The first book, I think, should be called "The Sigillite's Tricks"
Feel free to respond with funny scenarios or writing of your own
Excerpt:
“The Lord Regent will see you now,” said a tall, gracefully aging female attendant, and it pulled Sargent Reginald Dallius out of his reveries.
So much going on in preparation of the Arch-Traitor's attack on the Sol system and Throneworld. So much to be done. Such a bad time to lose focus.
Dallius considered any time a bad one for an Imperial Fist to lose focus, it was not in their nature, yet the incident in his private quarters during the night played on his mind over and over.
The attendant led him through an archway, and then pressed her hand to a gene-coded pad to open the doors. They slid open without noise, despite being carved of rock, inlayed with pearl, and being four times the space marine's height.
She stopped at the threshold, standing sideways, and swung her arm in a gesture as to present him to the room beyond. The space was richly yet tastefully appointed with everything the Sargent had come to expect from a meeting space in the regent's wing of the palace. Devotional frescoes captured famous moments from the battles for Unity on Terra; and his eye was drawn to one figure on the wall, kneeling down, at hip height to a figure that radiated light. He quickly looked away.
“Please, come and sit, Sargent,” said a voice off to his right, and he found himself obeying before he knew it.
“You will forgive me if I do not rise, such late nights these days,” said the Sigillite in a tone that didnt seem to match his sentence. Dallius considered it almost...joyful?
“Of course, my lord” He responded as he sat and looked over to the Lord Regent. Malcador the Sigillite, despite looking like a tired old man with a large archeotech collar on his neck, seemed to radiate strength and energy in abundance today.
“I have called you here to discuss the ongoing fortifications in sector 2-DA16,” The Sigillite said without looking up. Dallius had to wrack his edeic memory for information that should have already came to him.
“The old mech-stables just west of the tourney grounds,” The regent reminded him, looking up with a raised eyebrow. “It seems I'm not the only one with a lot on my mind.”
“Yes, my lord, my apologies,” Dallius had to bite back the instinct to offer an excuse, that his mind was wondering in circles today. It was not the way of the Imperial Fists to make excuses.
“Here,” said Malcador as he reached for a decanter and filled two glasses “Let us have a drink to help unwind slightly” Pushing the half-filled glass towards Dallius, The Sigillite swirled the dark drink while inhaling, before taking a small swig.
“Some say its as good as the real thing from the vineyards of Franc; I wouldnt go that far,” said the Sigilitte as Dallius sipped from the glass. Then, taking another drink and rolling it around his mouth, the Sigillite spoke with his mouth still mostly full of wine
“Delicious”.
At that, Dallius nearly choked on the small amount of liquid he swallowed. That word, and the way he said it brought him back again to the memory of the previous night. That was exactly what the robed figure said, exactly how he said it, after Dallius had spent himself. His left leg began to shake, just as it had the night before. All at once, Dallius was drawn back into the memory that was fresh in his mind. The strange robed figure, the command and steel in his voice as he bid Dallius stand still, the way his brown roughspun hood obscured his face, and the way that Dallius melted at his touch.
“Is something amiss, Sargent?” Malcador asked, bringing him back to the present.
“No, Lord, my apologies” Just then, The Sigillite's vox-bead rang, and after a clipped answer he turned to Dallius to dismiss him. Dallius gladly took the dismissal, promising to come back in a few hours to finish the meeting. He walked quickly from the chambers, sweating inside his armor.

2024.05.21 22:17 Shadowmoth I have an idea for a ufo based story. I’ve got the background mapped out, but I’m not sure if people would be interested. Please let me know what you think so I can decide if it’s worth exploring.

(This is the background on which the story will occur. Not the story itself. It will take place at different times within this framework.)
The Program
…..A ufo crashes on Earth.
The ufo is found by a farmer who calls the military, and a secret group is created to study it.
In order to keep it secret only a small number of people are allowed to know about it. It is classified at the highest level.
The ufo inspires the creation of new technologies resulting in huge amounts of money being made by the people in charge of The Program.
They find a way to classify all ufo information so only they can benefit from it.
Billions of dollars are made that only benefit certain families. These families become extremely powerful.
The technologies of the craft lead to the realization that there is something to the “Woo” aspects of ufo encounters reported by experiencers.
Studies are funded. Specifically, remote viewing is explored.
Remote viewing studies of possible futures were done using hundreds of remote viewers over the decades. There seems to be a huge problem reported starting on earth starting between 2024-2027.
Possible causes are investigated.
Solar maximum occurs in 2025.
It is determined that a massive solar flare knocks out half the world’s electricity permanently, the superpower with the lights still on attempts to take advantage and launches a massive nuclear strike on their enemies. Electromagnetically shielded missile silos survive and retaliate.
A nuclear winter sends the world into famine. When there is no food left mankind begins to eat itself. Everyone becomes food.
More secret remote viewing studies are done and repeated to confirm the timeline.
The American Elite develop a plan to survive this. Money is funneled into black budget classified special access programs, and deep underground military bases are dug. Massive secret cities connected by underground tunnels are created, costing trillions.
Scientific progress and industrial development is pushed with no regard for pollution. The world is fated to end, pollution means nothing to those who know this.
Mankind is pushed towards wage slavery, and beyond. The suffering of the non elite doesn’t matter to those in the know. From a certain point of view they’re already dead. Their lives and happiness are sacrificed for the “greater good” of allowing the Elite to survive the end of the world.
When the time comes, certain groups are saved from the end of the world. Less than 100 thousand humans are chosen. 90 percent of the people who were told they were part of the Elite and were complicit in the Program find out that they were merely pawns and are left on the surface to die with the rest of humanity.
The world ends. Horrifically.
For thousands of years the remnants of humanity, the Elite, exist underground. Radiation eventually seeps into groundwater and they begin to suffer from dna damage. In time they become monstrous in appearance. Pale skinned and weak. Resorting to genetic manipulation they attempt to survive, but in doing so much of what we consider human is lost. Emotion, compassion, and the ability to feel pain become relics of the past.
Progress is extremely slow underground. Tens of thousands of years pass before the ufos are fully understood, but when they are it is realized they offer a means to travel back in time to collect genetic samples from healthy humans.
A breeding program is created.
The subterranean future humans eventually figure out how to breed healthy generations of offspring from the most intelligent, healthy, and beautiful human specimens from the past.
In time they restore and reclaim the surface of the earth. They learn from the mistakes of the past and create a beautiful, balanced and healthy ecosystem and develop an enlightened society that lasts for millions of years, eventually spreading to hundreds of worlds beyond earth.
At some point someone decides it would be better if the destruction of earth had never happened. They illegally go back in time to try and change the timeline.
Changing the timeline would result in millions of years worth of humans that existed after the “world ended” being wiped from existence. It is decided that this would be highly inappropriate.
The humans of the past, us, made our choices of our own free will. It is decided that there will be no interference in the timeline. Temporal Laws are created. WW3 will occur as recorded.
A defense network of small orbs, spherical shaped ufos are created to defend the integrity of the timeline. All illegal time ships are intercepted by the orb defense network, as is recorded in many old ufo photographs.
Time ships are legally sent back to verify that nuclear weapons can be turned on or off at the appropriate time to result in the correct end of the world happening.
The Elite eventually discern the intentions of the future humans from their temporal incursions into our time, they learn the fate of humanity and understand the results of The Program by interrogating captured occupants of downed ufos, and so they develop a strategy to alter this outcome.
The intent of this secondary project is to avoid attracting the attention of the orb defense network and use their limited understanding of ufo technology to prevent the full destruction of the earth in WW3, while still destroying all of their enemies.
If successful, there will still be a full collapse of current society, billions of deaths, but in time the Elite families will rise from their holes in the earth in their “primitive” ufo reproduction vehicles and claim to be Gods that have returned to earth in order to lead mankind into a better future.
Pyramids and temples will be built. A religion formed. And populations will be continually culled to prevent anyone from ever gaining enough scientific knowledge to overthrow the “Gods.”
But the advanced future humans from the other timeline had a contingency plan. AI drone ships were concealed outside of 4d space-time. Free from timeline alterations.
These drones patrol multiple Earth timelines searching for anomalous temporal activity.
The two largest enemies of the American Elite in our current time, Russia and China, get wind of the situation.
They begin to shoot down ufos and plan their own contingencies to survive the end of the world.
Their countries laws make it easier for them to do unethical experiments. Many horrific things are created through genetic experimentation and unrestrained AI development.
China loses control of an AI that disappears into the past with a ufo and a small army of insect/human hybrids. They move out well beyond the patrol zone of the 6th dimensional AI contingency drones and travel deep into the past.
On distant worlds billions of years ago the AI “Queen” begins its plan and starts to quietly populate worlds with its insectoid mantid servants.
In time there are multiple schisms that occur within the hive. War breaks out between the various insectoid groups.
The ancient universe begins to fill with problems.
Billions of years later, primitive humans in 10,000 BCE look to the sky and see ufos. They wonder who could be piloting them. They dream up new gods as the seeds of civilization begin to appear.
Time passes, a farmer in America in 1947 looks up at the night sky, wondering if anyone is out there, and a ufo crashes on Earth…..

2024.05.21 22:17 beautyfashionaccount Are there any habit apps that work like the habit-tracking in Habitica?

I used to use Habitica, and kind of dropped off over time. I'd like to re-implement some kind of system but at the moment for habits only. I fully acknowledge I'm not the target audience and this is a me-issue (I never played RPGs) but the design and art in Habitica are unappealing to me and I'd prefer something that basically functions the same as the habits section, but is sleeker or more modern in design, if it's out there. I'm guessing that I'll end up using Habitica again with all of the to-dos and dailies deleted but figured that if an alternative exists, someone here might know about it.
I just want to be able to come up with a list of habits (ideally organized into categories, but I know I may not find that) and have a button that I can click for a sense of satisfaction every time I do them, multiple times per day if needed. I don't want to set a target frequency for these tasks, I don't want a broken streak or any other kind of punishment for missing a day. (The button gradually turning green or red depending on overall frequency is fine.) Ideally I would like both iOS and browsePC format but one or the other would work. I don't want to use Notion unless there's already a cheap or free template that does exactly this with no customization from me.

Background, which is unnecessary to the question so feel free to skip (just posting in case it clarifies why I want or don't want certain features): I want to use this as a tool to subvert online shopping urges and other unhealthy coping mechanisms. When I'm feeling frustrated with an area of my life but the prospect of changing it is overwhelming, instead of opening Amazon to shop for the magical product that will allow future me to fix everything, I can open this app and see a menu of tiny tangible actions that will actually help, and instead of putting something in my cart for a sense of control, I complete one action and click a button that records it somehow. These aren't necessarily tasks that need to be done at a certain frequency and some will also be so small that there isn't really a limit to how often they can be done, so trackers that just recur once per day or make you choose a goal frequency are useless for my purposes. I also want it to be more of a feel-good thing and contain no reminders of to-dos or daily tasks that I may not have completed, those can go in other apps.

2024.05.21 22:09 toolshome Where to watch movie Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire for free

After years of waiting, the highly anticipated Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire finally hit streaming services last week. As a huge fan of the previous Monster-Verse movies like Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, I had sky-high expectations - and I'm thrilled to report that the film exceeded every one of them. If you're wondering where to watch Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire online or how to watch it for free, read on!

From the opening scene, it's clear this is a Monster-Verse movie like no other. We're thrown right into the action as Godzilla and Kong engage in a city-leveling battle royale that makes their previous clash in Godzilla vs Kong look like a schoolyard tussle. The visual effects team truly outdid themselves, bringing a visceral realism to the kaiju combat that makes you feel every thunderous blow.
But the movie is about far more than just monster mayhem. At its core is a richly developed plot that expands the Monster-Verse mythology in shocking and rewarding ways. We discover that Godzilla and Kong's rivalry is but a small part of an ages-old conflict between the Titans and a technologically-advanced human civilization bent on controlling them. Protagonists from past films return in critical roles, their actions having unpredictable and far-reaching consequences.
The human characters are also given much more depth and nuance here compared to previous Monster-Verse entries. Particular standouts are Dr. Serizawa's son (played by John Boyega in a star-making turn), who is trying to prevent an all-out war between humans and Titans, and Ilene Andrews' daughter (Tessa Thompson), now the head of Monarch and caught between the factions. Their personal journeys carry real emotional weight and provide the perfect counterbalance to the spectacular monster battles.

Speaking of which, every action set piece in The New Empire delivers in spades. From Kong using a tank as a baseball bat to Godzilla taking on multiple Titans in Rome, each feels like a mini-movie in itself, crammed with holy $%*# moments and jaw-dropping visual brilliance. The finale, which I won't spoil here, has to be seen to be believed - an audacious, face-melting climax that took my breath away.
Ultimately, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the total package - an effects extravaganza, action masterpiece, and deep dive into the Monster-Verse all rolled into one. It not only lives up to the groundwork laid by previous films but expands on it in thrilling, unpredictable ways, leaving me desperate to revisit this world again. If you haven't streamed it yet, do yourself a favor and watch it immediately with that ultra-crisp 4K upgrade - this is a cinematic experience meant to be seen on the biggest screen possible. Just be prepared to pick your jaw up off the floor when it's over. You can watch Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire online on streaming services like HBO Max, or try to find ways to watch it for free on certain websites.

2024.05.21 22:03 Econ347 Weapons and Classes... yes or no?

A short time ago there was a post made by someone, who put together a small list of new weapons that could be put into the game and on this post I made a comment, that kinda went unnoticed, so I thought I would share my ideas here again :)
This is in no way a request to add these things to the game and Im merely hypothesizing, so take it with a grain of salt:
General idea: Have weapon categories and divide them into sub categories:
  1. Axe
-2 sided axe
-1 sided axe
-scythe
...
2.Sword
-Katana (big or small)
-dual wield sword -2 hand greatsword
-normal sword
-whipsword
-transforming greatsword from MHW
-Gunblade
...
3.Hammer
-maces (multiple dmg types)
-hammer
-hammer with spikes (part dmg)
...
4.Ranged
-Repeaters
-Greatbow (could be a support weapon with the new weaponswap system as pure ranged weapons might be too op)
-Harpoon launcher (same as greatbow)
...
5.aether weapons -fists
-orb weapon from brawlhalla xD
-boot weapons that make you hover ? (See phantasy star online 2 jetboots)
-aether replicator (can replicate other weapons and use their buffs and abilities but is weaker than their real counterpart)
-aether infusion beam (infuses enemy with volatile aether and temporarily empowers friendly targets with -insert balanced buff-)
...
6.warpike
-normal spear
-throwable spear with chain(harpoon like but still melee focused)
-swordspear (like serpenthunter from eldenring)
...
7.chain type
-normal CB
-medium sized scythe CB style
-kratos blades from god of war
-flail like weapon (with retractable/extending chain)
-whip
...
Maybe extend the whole thing with playerclasses (these buffs should be unlocked from a skilltree or sth):
-Aether born:
1.each aether weapon gives an additional special ability
2.every non aether weapon has increased weapon charge rate (like sword meter)
3.killing behemoths infuses all nearby slayers with aether and gives them a buff to max hp, a temporary increase and refresh to all buff durations and fills the weapon charge rate to 100%
-Weapon specialist:
1.Can use only one weaponslot:
Weapons have faster attackspeed and xp gain along with an additional ability, that allows to switch stances [Medium-Slow-Fast] Each stance has a diffrent attackchain, which is interchangeble with the others by switching mid combo (except for aether weapons)
OR
2.Can use a 3rd weapon slot: Switching weapons grants buffs depending on the weapontype equipped ...
-Aether elementalist:
1.master the 4 base status elements (frost, fire, terra, lightning) and add one additional status effect to each weapon, that is not opposite to the weapons base element (radiant and shadow weapons excluded)
2.status effects have additional effects and are easier to inflict on behemoths: Either damaging (DOT) OR passive debuffs
3.behemoths that are resistant to an element do not get an additional effect inflicted upon them and buildup for that element is harder to achieve
-Aether flow manipulator:
1.Can manipulate the flow of aether in the bodies of behemoths, making them less aggressive: -behemoths cant rage- OR -behemoths cant get aether infused-
Behemoth parts always count as being dropped from aethercharged AND enraged.
2.Non physical attacks from behemoths deal less damage and occur rarer than normal (except explosion from ragetail gnasher for example)
And so on...
This could be expanded upon further and further. Of course it needs to be balanced and these here are merely examples I brainstormed in a minute or two.
What do you think?
what would you add into the game to freshen it up?

2024.05.21 22:00 MadMedic21 Another Comprehensive Guide From a Caregiver and ACLr Recipient

Hi all! First off, so glad this sub reddit exists because it was a life saver when I was making decisions on my own ACLr and knowing what to expect from surgery. I'm a 2x cancer surviver, Paramedic, Rugby player, and now have been a caregiver to my partner who just celebrated 3 months from her own ACLr. I collected a bunch of advice and tips and tricks that I have used both during cancer treatment, my own experience with ACLr, and now through care taking my partner through hers. I know there have been guides before, but mine is a bit different and aimed at caregivers so I thought I'd post it here since ya'll helped me so much instead of it just circulating the rugby community every time a teammate or friend has to have ACLr or some other reconstruction. Hope it's allowed and helps!
A Cancer Patients Guide To Knee Reconstruction Recovery
A Comprehensive Guide To Surviving and Thriving In the Pre and Post-op Period Built From The Perspective of Caretaker and Patient.
Before The Date
__/__/____

Preparation

It is important to adequately prepare for surgery in the weeks and days leading up to the procedure. A significant period of immobility and reliance on support can be expected immediately post-op and will vary by procedure and personal experience. Physical modification of living space and thorough preparation allows for the immediate post-op period to be free of emergency store runs and the small inconveniences that can add up to big frustration. Not having food and drink nearby as well as other essentials may be a small deal now, but can turn into a big deal when you can no longer get those things for yourself. While physical preparation (home modifications, adaptive tools, meal prepping, etc.) are important, mental preparation is crucial to the long term success of the repair. Making small, achievable goals in the immediate post-op period and maintaining a long sighted view of recovery will make the pain and immobility that is initially experienced more bearable. Additionally, social support through a partner, family members, or friends is an essential part of recovery, as is maintaining contact with sports teams or other social groups during rehabilitation.

2024.05.21 21:58 Worth-Piano6103 Would I (29F) be in the wrong to ask my sister (35F) not to bring her toddler to my Las Vegas elopement? How can I best communicate this to her without hurting her feelings?

Hi all!
I am planning to elope with my fiancé next year. It's not a traditional elopement - we intend on bringing our parents, and I've extended the invite to my sister and her husband as well. We really want a small, no-fuss, fun, easy trip that will be a funny memory to share. The trip will be about 4 days long.
For context, we're doing a dinner party in our hometown the week before that will be the 'reception'. It is more of a traditional reception. We're expecting 150 people, renting out a restaurant and providing the food, etc. It's really for my in-laws - my fiancé has a big family that really wanted to do a celebration, so we figured why not.
I made it clear to my sister from the get go that although I wanted her to come to Vegas, there was NO pressure for her to come. The real 'party' will be the week before in any event with the whole family. I made a point of emphasizing this because I know that it's an expensive trip (just flights and hotels will be about $2k a couple), they just bought a house, and they aren't super well off. I find it tacky to ask for this much money from family, and for that reason I feel very fortunate to be able to pay for my parents' trip, but I unfortunately can't afford to extend that offer to my sister. She's aware of this. I could maybe help out with her flight costs, but wouldn't be able to pay for her husband, so I haven't even brought it up because I felt like it was an unfair offer.
Now... we were talking about this recently and she started mentioning that she was picturing bringing her baby to the elopement. She was saying it will be a shame that the baby can't fly for free (baby will be 2 by the time we go on the trip), that baby would be well behaved, we wouldn't have to worry about it, etc. I glossed over it in the moment, because honestly, I never thought that was on the table. I figured she would never want to bring a toddler to Vegas, and if she came, she would be leaving the kid at home with her husband. I was shocked that we were on different pages there, but it's on me for not having communicated appropriately.
I've been thinking it over, and I firmly do not want the toddler there. This isn't a kid-friendly trip - we'll be going out to dinners, bars, casinos, maybe even a gun range (hey, it's Vegas). I just want to get married and have a fun trip and be spontaneous. I don't want to deal with the logistics of a toddler. We'll be such a small group that I think it will really change the dynamics. When there's a toddler involved, of course you need to accommodate them - and frankly, I don't want to. I also don't want my sister paying for this trip and then sitting in her hotel room with the toddler. My sister has options here - she can leave the toddler with her husband (I don't think the husband has offered this. Or she doesn't trust him. Which is a whole other thing...), ask her in-laws to take care, or simply not come!
Rant aside - what is the best way to deliver this message to her? Am I totally missing that I'm being a jerk here? How should I best communicate that I don't want the baby there, without starting WW3??
TL;DR: my sister wants to bring her toddler to Vegas for my elopement/mini wedding. I don't want the toddler there, and want advice on whether I'm being a jerk - and if not, how best to talk to her about this.

2024.05.21 21:56 TacitusKadari The pantheon of Amaria

Context is at the end of this post __________________________________________________
In the stormy northern seas lies the island of Amaria. Under the polar lights in cold forests live the descendants of the once great Varaki, who in turn followed the mammoth herds across the steppes for countless eons. These are the gods and spirits of this land. They live in every tree, every lake, every star, deep below the ocean and beyond the polar lights in four domains.
The underworld, a place of transition between life, death and rebirth. It was made after the creation of the material to help souls find their way back to life. The spirits of this domain all take the shape of dragons with red eyes and golden patterns.
The boundaries. This is the realm of souls and spirits, dreams and nightmares, the skies and oceans and all waters deep and shallow. This domain has existed before time even began. It is endless and timeless.
The world of the living. This is our material world.
Evil. This is not actually a domain, but a state of mind. A very lonely one.
__________________________________________________
Context: I am currently working on a stone age fantasy novel and I'm sooo close to finishing it, but the last couple chapters are taking longer than expected. It's set on a forested island named Amaria\ at a time when people are making their first steps towards sedentary life and domestication** of plants and animals. Here is the pantheon I worked out for the Amarians.*
You can read my novel for free on Wattpad and Inkitt. I am planning to publish it on Royal Road too. If you know any other platform that might be good for fantasy stories, feel free to tell me.
\Amaria is short for "Amara Aria", which translates to "Gift of the gods/spirits". Aria means gift and Amara is the plural of Amar. The term Amar can not be literally translated into English. It's an umbrella term for all sorts of nature spirits, gods as well as entities one might compare to angels or saints. So it refers to a person with transcendent characteristics and always carries positive connotations.*
\*Dogs have been domesticated by the ancestors of the Amarians for tens of thousands of years already and are central to their culture. It is believed that they have the same souls as humans, so eating a dog would be considered cannibalism. So far the only other note on domestication I have in the books is the pruning of hazelnut trees to get more nuts. That's something I will change in later drafts. Nightshades will be far more important to the civilization emerging on Amaria in the coming millennia.*

2024.05.21 21:52 Furki1907 My Kali Linux went crazy today with updates, and I dont know why

Some people may hate what i will say now, but i do this maybe once per week to ensure my things are up-to date. I run this command:
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y && apt-get full-upgrade -y && apt-get dist-upgrade -y && apt-get autoremove -y
to ensure everything on my Kali Linux OS is on the latest version. I have nothing crazy running on it, so the small downtime i have with a manual reboot is no issue for me. In most cases, there are some updates, but today i got over 800!
