2024.05.21 09:56 arturovivo Information about the POD europosters.eu
Hello. I am leaving a brief description of this platform here since I see there is little information about it on the internet, although I have decided to summarize my experience.
My designs took a long time to start selling, which is normal due to the upload limit you have when you start.
I started selling a bit more, and when it seemed like things were starting to work out, they sent me an email saying they were terminating our collaboration "since your uploaded works have not sold well or do not meet our requirements and/or sales potential," and my designs would no longer appear in their search engine.
As with almost any other Print on Demand platform, they have allowed it to fill with trash (not just AI, but also bad designs). One wonders, why do those trash designs that look like they were made with Paint exist, and my store gets shut down?
In summary, if you want to sell here, especially posters and wall art, it is a good option, but you are at the mercy of an erratic and nonsensical design approval system. Their quality control is just as bad as other platforms.
You are at risk of being shut down without notice, losing your earnings if you haven't reached 50 euros in that period, and not being given any explanation as to why your designs are rejected while other trash designs are accepted.

2024.05.21 05:20 Zealousideal_Bid6183 Second round of interview for entry-level position asking me to create a 20 min presentation
Hi everyone, I'm currently interviewing for a position at a non-profit agency. I don't want to give too many details out of privacy concerns, but it's part of the social work field and the job title has to do with "Community Engagement" and the job posting describes it as doing community outreach work to increase community awareness of the agency to promote the agency and its services. This is an entry-level position and the pay is around $50,000. I live in an infamously expensive part of the country, and 50k is peanuts here. So obviously the pay isn't very exciting, but I also understand that in my current standing, I don't have much bargaining power, so I'm willing to accept that pay level. I'm a recent graduate, and while I do have my Master's degree in social work, I don't have a ton of paid professional social work experience because I went straight to my MSW from my BSW and I'm pretty young.
I already completed one interview, which seemed to have gone well, as they invited me to a second interview. As part of the second interview, they have asked me to create and present a 15-20 minute presentation. The second round consists of a 45 min interview (the first round interview already lasted over an hour), a 15-20 minute presentation, and a 15 min Q&A about the presentation. For the presentation, they asked me to create a community engagement plan and strategy for the agency, including a plan for which communities to reach out to, and how, and a social media engagement plan and possible messaging as part of that plan.
My question is -- is this a reasonable ask? My feeling is that they seem to basically be asking me to do a fair bit of unpaid work for them, when I have no guarantee I may even get the position.
I have to add that a lot of my concern about going the extra mile to do the work of this presentation for this position comes from the below points:
- The job posting made it sound more community engagement & development adjacent (which is social work relevant and relevant to my social work degrees) but in the interview I was informed that managing their social media & website (including figuring out their branding, doing graphic design for posters & other promotional materials) was a significant portion of the job. To me, this just sounds more like they should be looking for someone who's got a marketing degree (yet the posting was looking for someone with a social services-related degree). As a recent grad with little paid social work experience, I really was hoping to land something more relevant to social work to begin building my resume and social work skills.
- This position is newly created. When asked about onboarding & training, and about what a day-to-day in the job would look like, they didn't really have a concrete answer and just mentioned that they are starting from zero here, so they're not sure either. So it sounds like they'll be figuring out the job scope and duties as they go along, which from my past job experiences, can become a slippery slope where you lack job definition and thus kind of get asked to pick up anything they need help with and overextend yourself. They also mentioned they would want me to help with looking for funding and applying to grants (including researching & writing applications), which seems a bit random considering the rest of the job is basically just social media management and marketing. They don't have any basis for an engagement strategy to start from, because the position is new and this initiative is new. There is no team to work with, apart from the person who would be my supervisor, who is also one of the agency's Directors and therefore often busy (it's a BIG agency with a LOT of programs and interagency collaborations going on), so probably wouldn't have time to give me much direction. There is no marketing or social media staff at the agency to work with, there's also no one dedicated to fundraising/grant writing. It would just be me. To me, it sounds like I would need to be filling multiple shoes at once on my own - marketing, graphic design, social media, community outreach, and fundraising/grant writing.
So to me, it sounds like they are kind of asking for unpaid work from me to create an engagement strategy for them, without knowing if I have a real chance at being hired, for a position that already seems somewhat iffy/ill-defined with entry-level pay.
Now, I just wanted to ask opinions. Should I go ahead and put the work into the presentation and interview anyways? I know I'm a new grad without much professional experience, so maybe I should just suck it up because beggars can't be choosers. Maybe this is an industry standard? And it's not like many places are knocking down my door to hire me.
Or should I choose to skip out on doing this unpaid work, and keep looking? I've been applying for 2 months so far and only had two interviews, so I'm feeling a little discouraged, although I know the job market here is oversaturated, especially at an entry level. I'm lucky enough to live at home, so I don't have a dire financial situation that would drive me to take the first thing that comes my way, so I can afford to keep looking for something a little more up my alley. But I just wanted to ask opinions and see if maybe I'm too in my head and being too picky/uppity about it all LOL.
Thank you everyone.

Review
Welcome aboard. I'm the Doctor. Or will be if this regeneration works out. - The Doctor
This might not sound plausible at first blush, but
Castrovalva might just be the strangest
Doctor Who story ever.
Not in terms of content, the actual plot of
Castrovalva while a bit mind bending, isn't
that strange. But the actual way it's laid out, the pacing, the way it's constructed, it looks so different from anything else this show has done.
I mean, is
Castrovalva even one story? Should I split the first half and the second half into different sections of this review? Into different reviews? Maybe it's best to start with how we got here.
Tom Baker was always going to be a challenge to replace. I think it's difficult to properly conceive of, in modern terms, how long Tom Baker was the Doctor. I mean, he held the role for seven seasons. He was
The Doctor (the definite article, you might say), in popular consciousness. If you were a twelve year old kid who first started watching the show when he took over, you would have been an adult when he left. So, how do you replace that?
Well, what Producer John Nathan-Turner did next made a lot of sense. Tom Baker had been an unknown when he was cast. But now, having to replace him, JNT decided to take someone who was fairly well known. Nathan-Turner had worked as a production assistant on
All Creatures Great and Small before becoming
Doctor Who's producer. And one of its stars, Peter Davison, had achieved something of a following working on that show. The shorter, light-haired younger man was also a physical contrast to Tom Baker's imposingly large, dark-haired man. As a start for a new era, Davison was, it seemed, the ideal candidate.
So, naturally,
Castrovalva does a lot of work trying to simultaneously convince us that this is both a brand new Doctor, but also very much still the same Doctor. Which is probably the reason for the very strange story structure.
Castrovalva is pretty cleanly divided into halves. The trouble in the TARDIS section covering the first two episodes, and the portion actually set in the castle of Castrovalva, covering episodes three and four.
The first two episodes feel like they're trying to connect the Doctor back to previous incarnations. Peter Davison actually decided in rehearsal to perform several sections like he was previous iterations, and dialogue got rewritten to emphasize this (I'm especially pleased that he got in an impish giggle when he was channeling the 1st Doctor, as that's an oft overlooked element of William Hartnell's performance). There's also a pretty heavy emphasis placed on the relationship between the Doctor and the TARDIS in these two episodes. The TARDIS opens up a roundel to provide medicine, and offers the Doctor a wheelchair. We haven't really seen much evidence of the TARDIS having a mind of its own since, and this is going
way back,
The Edge of Destruction, but it still helps emphasize the idea of the Doctor still being the Doctor. After all, if the
TARDIS is trying to take care of the Doctor, then clearly it's still the Doctor.
Though, as the Doctor admits, things are a lot rougher this time than in the past. Before this the Doctor has always regenerated in a relatively stable situation as an adventure was ending. Here, he's essentially dropped in mid-struggle with the Master and he just needs some rest in a calm place. A lot of stuff is thrown at us. Apparently the cure for post-regeneration trauma is simplicity – the more complex the environment the worse the symptoms. The TARDIS has a room for just such purposes, called a "Zero Room". In a worst case scenario (say, after you accidentally jettisoned the Zero Room to create thrust to escape the explosion of the Big Bang) the doors and walls of the Zero Room can be used to create a smaller "Zero Cabinet" which looks like a TARDIS interior-themed casket.
While that's going on, we get some of the most inane conversations you can imagine between Nyssa and Tegan. I like these bits in theory. Tegan and Nyssa are trying to work out a lot here after all. It's, for each of them, their first proper trip in the TARDIS, and what with the Doctor suffering the after-effects of regeneration and Adric off being weird (he's actually mental projection being controlled by the Master), the two of them have to figure out how to keep the Doctor healthy, stop the TARDIS from traveling directly into the creation of the universe (called the galaxy here because science fiction writers aren't scientists) and just generally hold things together. The problem is the actual dialogue is sheer nonsense. There's a lot talk about the power of the word "if". There's also a lot of talk about recursion which, while it's a theme of the overarching story had no place being introduced when it was.
This is all doubly frustrating because, if you remove Nyssa and Tegan's more vapid conversations from the equation, they have a pretty good story together. The basic idea of the front half of the story is that the two are left to work things out without the Doctor and Adric. It's a really effective way to put emphasis on the two newest members of the TARDIS team, who essentially just joined the TARDIS last story. Tegan working out the TARDIS controls (even though she doesn't really, it turns out the Master-controlled Adric projection did that for her), and Nyssa providing scientific explanations and useful context – they genuinely make a good team. There's a bit where the Doctor sets up how his new companions can thrive on their own. Adric of course has a mathematical genius, and as of the events of
Logopolis you might as well say he's got magic. Nyssa has "technical skill and understanding" and Tegan is the "coordinator". And it actually plays out over the course of the story. It's just a shame that some of these conversation are so mindless.
That takes us into the second half of the story, where the Doctor gets to be a bit more active and we actually visit the planet/city/castle of Castrovalva. Throughout episode 3 Castrovalva is presented to us as a kind of ideal medieval-inspired society (lot of those lately). From the beginning though, something feels off. Something constantly feels artificial about Castrovalva, like it's setting is a little too idyllic and uncomplicated. And then there the seemingly sinister presence of Shardovan, the librarian who always seems to be skulking around. And then there's The Portreeve, a wise old man who always seems to know a little bit more than he should.
And that's all for good reason. Castrovalva is fake. The Master made it up, disguised himself as the Portreeve as a trap for the Doctor, using Adric's ability with block transfer calculations – he'd captured Adric at the beginning of the story. As always, the Master's greatest weakness is that he likes things to be grand and complicated, and so over the course of the two episodes the facade is slowly dismantled. And in a genuinely clever moment, the fake people that the Master has created aren't entirely happy about being used by him. "You made us, man of evil. But we are free," says Shardovan before he destroys the web that is holding Castrovalva together in a genuinely effective and cathartic moment.
And I do like how Shardovan, clearly set up to make us think he's the villain, and possibly even the Master, with his dark outfit, sinister stares, and heavy contrast to the more friendly attitudes of the rest of the Castrovalvans, turns out to be the person who's worked out that something is wrong with Castrovalva. It might not seem all that innovative, but at this point in
Doctor Who's history it's genuinely hard to think of someone who was presented with so many of the superficial signifiers of being a villain but turned out not to be. It even makes sense internally. Castrovalva has intentionally been created to lull the Doctor into a false sense of security. So the one character who's not doing that turning out to be good is just a natural progression.
These episodes are also where we get a better sense of the Doctor. I'll admit that on past viewings, I never really cared much for Peter Davison's take on the Doctor, but on my current run through his era (as I've mentioned before, I'm always watching ahead while I'm watching for review) I've found him more compelling than I have in the past. Here he approaches Castrovalva with a kind of mad panic.
Something is wrong here, but he can't quite place it. He's trying to solve the puzzle of what's wrong and it doesn't help that he's
still recovering from his regeneration, something that doesn't really resolve itself until the end of the story. It's a solid contrast from Tom Baker's austere and eccentric Doctor, to Davison who brings a more manic energy. Today we're used to the Doctor being wild and high energy, but this is really the first time we get that kind of NuWhoish energy.
I'm still not gelling with Ainley's Master though. I enjoy him as the Portreeve here, playing the kind of wise old man who normally would be one of the Doctor's allies. Except the Portreeve always seems to know a little too much. Watching it back, there's definitely plenty to hint at the Portreeve's true nature. As the Master though…I don't know, it still just doesn't work for me. I like the Master's plan in this story, it's overcomplicated, but that's kind of the Master's MO. But Ainley just always seems to go a bit overboard in his portrayal.
I haven't really talked much about Adric this story, but that's because he doesn't really do much in this one. One of the challenges the show is going to have with three companions is finding something for each of them to do. In this story Adric is mostly sidelined. We get the, by now, well worn trope of Adric pretending to side with the villain of the story but it barely even lasts long enough to note. Mostly, Adric is used as a tool by the Master, very little more.
Castrovalva is, on the whole, a solid enough start to the 5th Doctor era, but I do have some pretty major reservations. The first half in particular is just full of these completely empty-minded conversations between Nyssa and Tegan that should have been good, but are just so poorly written. Things get better in the back half, but there's still some iffy bits. Still, I do like
Castrovalva in spite of its flaws.
Score: 6/10 Stray Observations
- This was Eric Seward's first story as Script Editor. Previous Script Editor Christopher H. Bidmead wrote this story, effectively resolving the plot of prior story, also written by Bidmead, Logopolis.
- Starting with this story, Doctor Who began airing twice weekly, on Mondays and Tuesdays, as opposed to the once a week schedule it had been on since its debut.
- Peter Davison is credited as "The Doctor" for this story, rather than "Doctor Who" as was the case previously. The general belief seems to be that Peter Davison requested the change, and this certainly tracks with him being a big Doctor Who fan, but I wasn't able to find anything confirming this.
- The Portreeve is credited separately from the Master, even though Anthony Ainley plays both. He is credited as "Neil Toynay", an anagram of "Ton Ainley".
- Director Fiona Cumming had actually been involved with Doctor Who for a long time, her first job on the show being as an Assistant Floor Manager on The Massacre (1966). She was a production assistant on several shows, including Doctor Who during the 70s, and started directing in 1974 with an episode of Z-Cars. However the BBC didn't let her direct full-time and she became a freelance director in 1979.
- This story was actually filmed fourth in the season. While Davison has claimed this was done to give him more time to get familiar with the role, in reality it was simply a case of the first story idea to open the season, Project Zeta-Sigma proving unusable. This did have the unintended consequence that the series regulars were a bit to friendly with each other before Director Fiona Cuming had to remind them that, in story, they had all just met very recently.
- The plot was inspired by two MC Escher posters in the office of BBC Head of Drama Graeme MacDonald, which stuck with Bidmead. Producer John Nathan-Turner apparently hated the things, saying "art should be there to soothe, not distract" which is…certainly a take. The posters were of MC Escher painting "Ascending and Descending". Bidmead connected this to the mathematical and computer science concept of recursion (as noted when I covered Logopolis, Bidmead had an interest in computers).
- Apparently Peter Davison liked Castrovalva, but never quite understood what it was about.
- Episode 1 starts with a precredits sequence recapitulating the cliffhanger from Logopolis. It's the first time an episode has placed a scene before the credits. Notably the music is changed ever so slightly to be more optimistic, as Logopolis was the end of an era, but Castrovalva is the beginning of another one.
- The title sequence has been updated. It's the same one as the one used for Season 18, but the awkward picture of Tom Baker's face has been replaced with a perfectly reasonable picture of Peter Davison's. I'm still not fond of the starfield openings, but this is at least an improvement, however minor.
- In the first scene of the story proper, The Doctor and companions are running away from the Pharos Project guards. Tegan and Adric are supporting the Doctor's weight, and when Adric lets go, the Doctor collapses directly onto Tegan and it's actually fairly funny.
- So a second after claiming the only thing she knows about the TARDIS controls is the door mechanism, Nyssa activates the scanner via the TARDIS controls.
- In episode 1 we see the Doctor unravelling the 4th Doctor's iconic scarf to track his way through the TARDIS. I have seen people get so mad about this, but I actually think it's brilliant. It's a new era after all, and what a better visual metaphor for that is there than the Doctor unravelling his prior incarnations' most iconic item of clothing.
- When Nyssa mentions that the Zero Room that the Doctor asked to go to is probably a "neutral environment, cut off from the rest of the universe", Tegan suggests Brisbane.
- And of course the Doctor gets a new outfit. It's…fine. While the Season 18 version of the 4th Doctor outfit was too much of one color it was still built on the bones of a good look for the Doctor. But now we're very much in the JNT "uniform" style clothing. I'll admit, being an American, I wouldn't necessarily recognize a crickiter's outfit, much less an Edwardian one, if not for Doctor Who, but knowing that that's what it was based on really makes the whole outfit feel a bit gimmicky. As for the celery lapel…I don't get it. It's such a random and weird element, and I'm not sure what it's doing there (out of universe at least). I do like that the Doctor still has a hat. I like it when the Doctor has a hat. Not enough Doctors wore hats (Both Two and Eleven liked to pick up hats from time to time but they never held onto the things. The Doctors who held onto their hats were the Fourth Doctor's fedora, the 5th Doctor's Panama hat, and the 7th Doctor's straw hat.).
- The cricket outfit wasn't the first idea proposed for the Doctor's outfit. Initially he would have worn a polo outfit. Davison liked the sporting motif, but preferred cricket gear instead.
- Peter Davison was not a fan of the question mark lapels.
- The Doctor calling a wheelchair in episode 2 "transport of delight" is both a great line delivery by Davison, and a really early look into how the 5th Doctor sees things.
- Nyssa's outfit changes slightly throughout episode two. Her skirt is replaced with trousers, and she loses the velvet jacket and her ornamental comb on Castrovalva. The original costume was considered impractical, so the simplified version was designed.
- In episode 3 the Doctor eats a stick of celery. Notably for the man that would spend the rest of his time on the show wearing celery, Peter Davison actually hated the stuff, and immediately spit the celery out the moment they stopped filming.
Next Time: It's been three whole serials since we've had a story without the Master. So let's get some killer androids in here instead. Much better.

2024.05.21 00:53 the_evil_pineapple What’s the best thing you have at your desk?
I recently started a fully in-person position (my first full-time job) and I’m wondering what kinds of ways people make their desk cozy
My office: * I work in a marketing team of 8 including me, but the head of brand development has his own office and the rest of us are in the same room like a mini bull-pen * The room itself is awesome, the North and west walls are just big windows (so lots of plants in there) * the south wall is covered in posters from the brands we manage, which is both cute af and helpful for quick branding references * there’s music usually playing, and the team is pretty chatty. Tbh it sounds like an incredibly difficult environment to work in
however ive also had a few days now where it was just me and another girl and those days seemed to be less productive which is fascinating haha
What I have so far: * I’ve got a
sand art thingy which is fun when I need a brain break * also brought a smallish plant in * stocking up on essentials like hand cream, deodorant, lip balm, contacts crap, etc. * I’ve got some of my favourite pens and markers/highlighters * thinking I need a sketchbook there
I’m also looking at getting a footrest because I absolutely can’t stand sitting properly. I want to get a
kneeling chair at some point, the other graphic designer has one she uses sometimes and it looks awesome
I feel like that’s a lot but I’m wondering if there’s I’ve never thought of!

2024.05.20 22:50 teensyweensyturtol 11 Shows in 7 Days! An extensive review of my week on Broadway seeing majority of the shows from the front row!
| Hello! I wanted to come by here and talk about my recent time on Broadway a couple weeks back. This trip has been years in the making, but I was only able to make it happen this year as I thought I would go all out for my 25th birthday and celebrate being halfway through my 20’s in New York City. The last time I was in the city was way back in 2019 to which I squeezed 5 shows in three days. I’m from Washington State so it isn’t that easy of a trek, which is why I managed to squeeze 11 shows in a span of 7 days. I had four double show days, of which I loved. I prefer seeing shows from the front row because of the added immersiveness factor, not to mention just being so close to the actors that allows you to see and feel the show in a much more intimate manner. Most of the shows I saw on this trip were from the front row with the exception of Sweeney Todd. I go into ranking those seats towards the latter part of this post! Musical theater has helped me heal so much in the past and there wasn’t a better way of doing a “reset” than seeing shows back to back. I also wanted to utilize this post to disclose what I personally thought about each show I saw. This will be a pretty extensive post so without further adieu, here we go! Day 1 https://preview.redd.it/kubacnk0rn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf56c01806fa9d74f5fb24f0bbc994412da3e94b Hell’s Kitchen (matinee) Thoughts: I came out of this show kind of realizing why it got the amount of Tony nominations that it got. It definitely caters to the masses as the plot was fairly easy to follow and my god were the actors STELLAR! Literal jaw drop when Shoshana Bean made her first entrance - a true icon in the flesh. I also wasn’t expecting to come out of this show crying as “No One” really got to me since I have such a close bond with my mom. Such a high energy show and it was the perfect show to start my week in the city! Front Row thoughts: (AA106) I’m 5’9 and didn’t have to break my neck looking up except for when they were utilizing the very top most part of the towers downstage left. Good legroom as well. Favorite Moment: Jade Milan’s debut as Ali! You can see the amount of support that the cast had for her and to think that this was her very first time doing it w/o any put-ins was beyond astounding. I was so honored to be in the house for her first principal performance! Notable Mentions: Kecia Lewis - omg she is a star and I was blown away by how moving her performance was as Miss Liza Jane. Stagedoor Experience: Not too large of a crowd and everyone was very respectful. Most of the ensemble came out to sign, but the only principals that came out were Jade and Kecia. Other notes: This was a last minute decision and I regret none of it! https://preview.redd.it/x243flw3rn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9badaacdc5cf6f75842654c46b8a8f740241138a Lempicka (evening) Thoughts: I was a lil confused ngl.. I personally just thought that the plot was all over the place but the cast was 10/10! I remember Amber Iman stating in an interview that they want the audience to NEED intermission and that's exactly how I felt after Act 1. I just felt like I needed room to breathe so I could also come into terms of what I just witnessed. I’ve seen several reviews saying that Eden was flat, but she was going all out on this performance. Front (ish) Row thoughts: Second row on the aisle (B2) - cute lil interaction from some of the ensemble members. You also still get a full view of the stage. Only had to crane my neck up when they were using the topmost platform on stage. Favorite Moment: Our Time gave me goosebumps. I like the big ensemble moments where you can literally feel their vibrato in your face! Notable Mentions: Kyle Brown was on for Tadeusz Lempicki. ALSO Jimin Moon is so cute that is all thank u.. Stagedoor Experience: All the principals came out to sign plus a few members of the ensemble! Eden and Amber really took time with everyone. Other notes: Love the quarter zip that they had available at the merch stand. Easily the most comfortable piece of merch from all the shows I’ve been to. Day 2 https://preview.redd.it/9hk8cbb5rn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=331b1279a99c93283bea1755b86834d7ea696146 Sweeney Todd - FINAL PERFORMANCE (matinee) Thoughts: The energy in the theater for the final performance was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Everyone was just so excited and you could definitely feel it. Every seat had a reusable Sweeney tote bag as a token for the final show. Seat Location & Thoughts: First row of the second mezz (MMEZZ A121) - Perfect view of everything. I was surprised that I could still see the facial expressions of everyone on stage. Favorite Moment: Literally the entirety of the show! Sutton was such a comedic Mrs. Lovett. Notable Mentions: Joe Locke!! Exceeded my expectations! Stagedoor Experience: The craziest stagedoor experience on the trip. I believe people camped out for this closing stage door shortly after the performance began. Very crowded but everyone was mostly respectful. I believe only a few of the principals plus some of the ensemble came out to sign. Aaron, Sutton, and Joe did not. Other notes: Aaron made a quick appearance at the stagedoor. Just kinda peeked his head out to wave and thank everyone for coming. https://preview.redd.it/a706yds6rn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71b32c2cc02f4afc13153dea20ce2f26993a721f Titanique (evening) Thoughts: I have never laughed so much at a show, but Titanique did just that! Dee was phenomenal! Very campy, kooky krazy!! Front (ish) Row thoughts: Orchestra D107 - basically the third row but it felt like the front as there was an aisle directly in front of you that was used in the show. It’s also directly beside the spot where Celine makes her initial entrance. I got so much interaction from Celine in which at one point she sat on my lap and caressed my face! Favorite Moment: The encore of MHWGO at the end of the show Notable Mentions: Marcus Antonio and Anne Fraser Thomas were the absolute standouts for me in this show! Stagedoor Experience: I highly debated stagedooring this show, to which I ultimately did but it wasn’t my favorite. I am really shy and the whole stagedoor was basically where the balounge was downstairs and it was mostly friends of the actors having their post show mingle with the cast. I was super shy to approach Dee and Lindsay. I ultimately decided not to interact unless they approached me, but was able to get Michael Williams to sign my poster and my program. Super nice dude and took the time to talk to me! Other notes: It was a trek to get to the Daryl Roth from Sweeney. I didn't do any research to where it was but was a little surprised to find out that it was all the way by Union Square Park. Day 3 https://preview.redd.it/fwxuksn9rn1d1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=100dfa12112e3e05f49b1a6b9499e0c6960cf34e Chicago (evening) Thoughts: I’ve seen Chicago three times (the international tour circa 2014) in Manila but was late to all three times which meant I missed All That Jazz each time. Glad to say I wasn’t late and was finally able to see it live! Robyn Hurder fits the role of Velma and I really love how much she made it her own! Front Row thoughts: BB106 - You’re right in the heart of the action. The stage was low enough that I didn’t have to tilt my neck all too much. Also the legroom in the front row at the Ambassador is very ample. Favorite Moment: All That Jazz but also Razzle Dazzle Notable Mentions: Max Clayton and Michael Scirrotto - I’m just in awe of how beautiful these men are.. hehe Stagedoor Experience: Bianca and Max Von Essen came out to sign. I was able to tell Bianca how she was my first Roxie Hart way back and how much of an honor it was for me to see her again and now on Broadway! Other notes: N/A Day 4 https://preview.redd.it/3licn1yarn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=175781ed8fa1976a7eb2a59d61e79240376c9495 Back to the Future (evening) Thoughts: Probably the most tech heavy show that I saw on this trip. I had seen the movie for the first time on my plane ride to the city a few days prior and I think it was a good idea to approach the musical with the context from the movie in mind. They had obviously altered a few of the notable parts of the plot to fit the stage adaptation better but I felt like it worked pretty well. The special effects on this show were absolutely amazing. Casey Likes has such a great stage presence. Front Row thoughts: (Center Orch A111) Absolutely loved being front row and center for such a tech heavy show. However, the stage at the Winter Garden was probably one of the higher stages on this trip. The only thing that really bothered me about this show was the audience etiquette of the family behind me who were obviously translating the show for their youngest daughter without trying to be mindful of those around them as they were conversing in full on regular speaking voice and not hush hush. I glared at them midway through act 1 but to no avail so I had to bring in an usher to talk to them at intermission to which it did nothing as this continued throughout the whole second act. All that aside, ALSO SPOILERS AHEAD : When it came time to fly the car out for the finale, it was cool to be in such close proximity to the actual robotic arm/mechanism that flips the car upside down over the audience. I got to say hi to Casey and Roger as the car was slowly going upside down! Favorite Moment: Something About That Boy was such a cute act 1 finale and something about that song is so catchy! Notable Mentions: Hugh Coles was a standout! Will Branner was also on for Biff at this show! Stagedoor Experience: Jonalyn, Aaron, Katie, Jelani, JJ, and Casey came out to sign! Other notes: N/A Day 5 - My Birthday! https://preview.redd.it/m2k1dwacrn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=139ec86d41f08401550819df654eb54d377960b0 Cabaret at The Kit Kat Club (matinee) Thoughts: HOLY FUCK! I’ve never experienced such an immersive theater going experience. From the shots of peach schnapps as you enter the theater, to how much they’ve transformed the August Wilson, I was gagged. I want to preface this by saying that I went into this musical completely blind with only the most recent west end cast recording to kind of give me a rough idea of the show’s plot. No regrets there. I guess I came out of that show feeling a little underwhelmed. I literally remember verbally uttering the words “thats it?” during the finale blackout. However with all that aside, the cast was absolutely superb. Experiencing Bebe Neuwirth in the flesh was sort of an out of body experience. Front (ish) Row thoughts: First row of the new West Mezzanine (Mezz 4 Row A Seat 220). Don’t get me wrong, these seats were absolutely perfect with just the right amount of being so close to the action, yet being at a good distance away from the stage to take everything in as a whole. However, I was reading a few reviews of the west mezz prior to going in and had heard about the bias of performing towards the “real” side of the house. Here are my thoughts around that - It's true - there was a clear bias to performing towards that side of the house. I felt as if they were really only looking at our side because they had to. Don’t get me wrong, I could see their effort at performing and catering to both sides of the house, but you end up feeling a little disconnected as most of the numbers do cater to the “real” side of the house. All that aside, it was still a great experience! Favorite Moment: When Sally initially gets introduced, she literally walks through the first row of the west mezz. I was a little shookt as the space was a little tight but she gets through to the other side witn no problem! I got a cute little moment with her as she momentarily complimented my outfit as she puts her hand on my face to pinch my cheeks! Notable Mentions: The ensemble was absolutely superb and took the immersiveness of the show to another level! I would definitely splurge on stage side seating the next time I go because you get so much more interaction from them! Stagedoor Experience: Eddie was the only one who came out to sign. Other notes: I purchased the Pineapple Room upgrade and it was worth it in my opinion. There was just a bit of confusion earlier on in the experience. I was under the assumption that the Pineapple Room was its own lounge, to which it is! However, the thing that I didn’t realize (and it wasn’t really clear in the emails that they send you) was that the actual experience starts once they open the doors to the actual house as it’s a room that's off to the side of the east mezz. That’s where they seat you and if you were going solo like me, you get paired up with another person going solo. I got to share a full bottle of champagne with another gentleman who only had a couple of glasses. So in actuality I had a whole bottle of champagne to myself! The attendants were super nice! The room had three private bathrooms which were a luxury! No lines at all to go to the restroom and they were clean! The whole room also acts as your coat check, as you can leave your belongings in there but they do ask you to take everything back with you after intermission. Getting to the east mezz from the west mezz is a trek so you do have to be mindful of that! The attendants also found out it was my birthday and once I was back in the lounge during intermission for desserts, I had found a cute little handwritten note as well as a free bar of toblerone from them. I can confidently say that this was one of the highlights of my trip! https://preview.redd.it/mo2c94fdrn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d10ca2ed765c4a6571dd59aeb40ec978cdea6955 Wicked (evening) Thoughts: It was nice to see the show that started it all for me! Being in the Gershwin was just such a special moment for me on this trip. Wicked was my introduction to musical theater and seeing it for the first time on Broadway was truly something really special to me. This marked my 5th time seeing Wicked after seeing the international tour cast in Manila years ago with Suzie Mathers as Glinda and Jemma Rix as Elphaba. MKM and Alexandra Socha were such a delightful pair and it was nice to see their fresh take on the role! Front Row thoughts: (ORCH BB110) Wicked’s front row was TIGHT. Probably the tightest front row seat on this trip. Favorite Moment: There's just nothing compared to seeing defying gravity happen right in front of your eyes. No matter how many times I've seen the show, it always feels like my first time whenever we get to that point. Notable Mentions: n/a Stagedoor Experience: Jordan, Jake, and Brad came out to sign. Other notes: As much as I love Wicked, I truly felt like I could’ve skipped this and seen The Outsiders instead, but there isn’t anything like saying you’ve seen Wicked on Broadway! Also, the last time I saw the show was in 2014, but I was a little taken aback by Thank Goodness and how the platform Glinda stands in was just a tad bit off the center. I think I remember it being much more centered the last time I saw it, but maybe that’s just my mind playing tricks on me. Day 6 https://preview.redd.it/94u3ubeern1d1.jpg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=979a1bc61d642a8690288709c367c4deec2a5647 The Great Gatsby (matinee) Thoughts: It still boggles my mind that the only Tony nom this show received was for costume design. This show probably had one of the more elaborate set pieces that really draws you in. All the principals were really on their game and I have nothing bad to say about them and this production! The only comical thing I can say was how they did Myrtle’s death. I feel like they could’ve been a little more creative than how it came to be as it was merely a flail and fall to the floor moment. I think this was the show that I had high expectations for and I was not let down! Front Row thoughts: (Center Orch B108) The leg room was ample and the stage was at a good height that it didn’t cut off the performer’s feet. My only complaint was how tight the seats were at the Broadway Theatre. Favorite Moment: New Money had me gagged!! Notable Mentions: We started with a full company but Sarah Chase was out of the show after intermission with Ryah Nixon stepping in for her. It was such a great experience seeing two Myrtles in one show! Ryah was great and props to her for going on at the last minute! Stagedoor Experience: All the principals except for John and Sara came out to sign. I believe a couple ensemble members also came out. Everyone at the stage door was also super respectful to the cast as well as the fans. I was half expecting it to go the other way around as the majority of the principals have such a huge following. Other notes: Was not expecting the gunshot to be as loud as it was. Like I can usually prepare myself for it, but this one shookt me with how loud it echoed in the theater. https://preview.redd.it/xbc46ghfrn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b224a8a7fc3df6cb64b028f1c491bf949983589 The Notebook (evening) Thoughts: Where do I even begin with this show? I wasn’t expecting for me to love this show as much as I did prior to seeing it and all the mixed reviews that it got. This show easily ranks as number 1 for the entire trip. I came into this without knowing anything about The Notebook like I had an idea of what it was but I’ve never seen the movie nor read the book. My only source of knowledge beforehand was about 5 songs from the cast recording and even then I couldn’t make myself listen to the whole thing because I wanted to see it with no spoilers. I’m honestly glad that I went in blind because it took me on such a wild roller coaster ride that I want to ride over and over again. I wasn’t really expecting myself to cry but I was sobbing by the end of act one and was even more of a mess by the end of act two. I was moved in ways I didn’t expect and they timed the comedic moments perfectly to counteract a heavy scene that just occurred. Front Row thoughts: (Center Orch B106) I was expecting to get wet from the rain scene but it wasn’t really that big of a deal! I loved being front row for this show for the sole reason that Joy Woods belts My Days literally like a foot away from you. The stage was at the perfect height that it didn’t require any neck breaking. Favorite Moment: I Wanna Go Back was the first song that made me cry out of the blue. I didn’t expect it as it kind of just happened. Another notable moment was during the finale when everyone was on the walk-around part of the stage and Dorcas was directly in front of me while I uttered the words thank you as I sobbed my eyes out. She replied with another thank you and that meant a lot. I thanked her for that moment when I met her at the stage door! Notable Mentions: John Cardoza! Holy fuck can that boy sing! Stagedoor Experience: A few of the principals came out to sign as well as the majority of the ensemble. It was such an honor for Mary Ann to come out and sign. Other notes: I need it to tour already because I would pay good money to see it again live! I have no words to describe how much I’ve fallen in love with this show. I’m kind of just at a loss for words with how much this has moved me. Day 7 https://preview.redd.it/83btcjzgrn1d1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4ccc6d4f98d2e95869838ca8011816186b1bef5 & Juliet (evening) Thoughts: Beautiful used to be my favorite jukebox musical, but this is now number one! Very pop-y as expected but the songs worked so well and just intertwined with the plot seamlessly. This performance was also Oliver Tompsett’s broadway debut! The energy in the house was electric and his first entrance was one hell of a moment! Front Row thoughts: (Orch A108) I wasn’t expecting to say this, but this show probably had the best front row. I’ve heard of reviews detailing how high and close the stage was to this front row, but it worked in my favor due to my height as I was eye level with the stage. The seats were roomy and the leg room was ample. The only downside was some of the props hindering your view of the stage during two numbers in the show. That wasn’t a big deal and was honestly not a problem. Favorite Moment: Roar gave me goosebumps but also That’s the Way It Is! Notable Mentions: Literally e v e r y o n e Stagedoor Experience: All the principals came out except for Ben and Betsy. Almost everyone in the ensemble also signed! Other notes: Seeing those costumes up close was breathtaking. So much attention to details! Everyone in this show also smelled so good. Obviously being that close, you're able to smell fragrances but I'd just like to say that Betsy Wolfe smells like eucalyptus and mint which I think fits her personality! Hope that's not too weird.. 2024.05.20 22:45 TheBlaringBlue Gaming's Art of the Keepsake
I’ve had a lot of adventures in my life.
I’ve traveled, made friends, seen sights, competed in sports, and participated in events.
Sometimes, following any of these endeavors, a small object would find itself in my possession. A knickknack, a totem, a doodad.
Maybe it was a collection of Mardi Gras beads from my trip to New Orleans. Or a t-shirt tossed by a cheerleader at a sporting event. A toy from a claw machine. A mixtape from a friend. A thank-you note. A cheap piece of junk from a tourist’s gift shop.
Whatever they were didn’t matter — what matters is that they were often
a representation of whatever moment in time they came from. I never threw these things away. I set them on my desk or on my shelves. When those spaces filled up, I bought two small storage containers. They’re filled to the brim and I’m currently filling a third.
Why keep the color-coordinated bandana a stranger gave me in the park during
Pokemon Go’s heyday? Why hold onto the Save the Date from my high school friend who ended up getting divorced not two years later? What significance or use could I possibly have for those goofy White Elephant gifts my kickball team gave at the yearly Christmas party?
No purpose, no reason and
there is none, respectively.
And yet I don’t want to let them go. You see, they are reminders of times and experiences — Keepsakes. Mementos. Souvenirs. In some ways, they’re a physical collection and documentation of my life.
It reminds me a little bit of this weird quirk I have when I play video games.
--
I likely dumped more than 500 hours across all my
Skyrim save files. There was no other game, there needn’t be any other game and there still hasn’t been any other game since.
In my adulthood, I returned to one of its many definitive editions for one last victory lap. With my experience, memory and fully-formed adult brain, I approached the game methodologically, in an optimal order, carefully. I built my ideal character and crafted only what was needed — down to the last iron ingot. I explored, I experienced — I did every major and minor quest, making it my perfect playthrough.
One thing I love about
Skyrim is the loot. Yes, there’s 20 million iron daggers and boring, inventory-cluttering useless items… but then there’s the special ones.
There’s the unique weapons at the end of each Daedric quest. The trinkets from the Thieves Guild. Spellbooks, statuettes and storybooks. The eerily-delivered note for the assassin’s questline. The robes of the king, the rings and necklaces of Jarls.
You know them — the
items with one-of-a-kind names and designs that are specific to each of their quests. You see, these items carry a story with them. How you stole for them or killed for them. Traveled, battled, talked, stealthed, lied, solved your way into their possession. They’re the game’s biggest treat.
That’s why, at the culmination of my final ever
Skyrim playthrough, I bought a house in Whiterun and filled it with these objects.
Weapons and armors on the walls and on the racks, items and books placed carefully on shelves - but not just any weapons, armors, objects and books. Only the special ones. It was a house that told the story of all of my adventures.
I sat down in a chair next to Aela the Huntress in my castle, my throne room. I saved my game one final time.
--
For all of gaming’s swashbuckling adventures, magnificent worlds and large stretches of land to traverse, they don’t always give us too much to remember them by, do they?
I appreciate
Skyrim so much for understanding the nature of the epic they were creating. The ability to fill your house with display cases, armor mannequins and weapon racks demonstrates the developer’s awareness of their playerbase and the scale of the adventures they were sending them on.
These are adventures to cherish, to tell tales of, to be remembered.
Will anyone else give me what
Skyrim did?
…
The answer’s yes, actually.
It’s a fascinating yes, too — because not every keepsake system is cut from the same cloth. Games offer
unique takes on the mechanic that energize it, give it new life and perspective and add layers of meaning to it in fresh ways.
And I’ve got plenty of examples.
--
In
The Outer Worlds, special items you collected while out adventuring would be placed in specific locations throughout your ship,
The Unreliable, upon return. These included things like:
• Posters • Signs • Various ISO items • Tossballs & Tossball cards • Golden bird statuettes • Many, many more
Sometimes these were stored by the game in your captain’s quarters, but other times, they’d appear in your squad’s quarters instead.
No matter where they got stored, these items were more than just junk. They were signature weapons of terrible villains whom you defeated, they were outlandish garb from flamboyant characters who painstakingly passed away to protect your life, they were motifs of resource-gouging corporations whom you shutdown for the good of cities and planets.
They were special, they were keepsakes. Their addition made
The Unreliable feel alive and lived in, part of your own, unique journey, filled with the stories and tales of your adventure and — importantly and specifically to
The Outer Worlds — your choices.
—
The second and third installments of the
Mass Effect series
contained model ships you could buy from vendors that would then go on display on desks or on racks in your spaceship,
The Normandy.
These are a little different because you buy them, rather than slice somebody’s head off for them, but they still count.
What makes them still count here is twofold:
• Some model ships only become available after completing certain missions that actually involve the ship you’re buying a model of, so they still serve as a reminder and memento of specific accomplishments in this way • If you transferred your save data through the games, models you collected in ME2 would appear automatically on The Normandy in ME3. Being able to carry souvenirs into a sequel is exceptional, and a feat I’ve not found any other game to match.
Mass Effect: Andromeda saw a return of this feature, too. You ended up re-gathering old ships of yore in this installment, however.
Andromeda also featured a more traditional collectible-style search; these model ships were looted from various locations in the world.
The original trilogy used the model ships as
landmarks for its major moments, to be remembered across the series, while Andromeda
paid homage to the previous games and encouraged its players to explore its world more thoroughly. —
In
Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, building up your burgeoning young settlement of Ravensthorpe is a central gameplay mechanic — as you acquire more resources to build with, the size of the village grows both in length, width and inhabitants.
The game includes optional side quests that change those who wander your evolving home and hub in medieval England. They include:
• Capturing a stray cat • Saving a fox from a burning home • Befriending a fallen hunter’s wolf pet
In each instance, the living being will join your settlement — the cat will stay underneath Eivor’s seat in your longship, the fox will wander Ravensthorpe and the wolf will welcome you in your personal quarters, howling at your arrival.
You can interact and pet them whenever you like, playing a short animation displaying the affection between the two.
These three “collectibles” don’t feel like trinkets, but
living, breathing additions to your home that give it joy and life, as well as
keep you young.
—
Speaking of Norse culture, central to
Biomutant is a form of Yggdrasil — the WorldTree.
Central to
Biomutant’s story is saving the old, decaying and currently-being-eaten-by-giant-monsters WorldTree. And there are two impressive quests in the game that reflect back to the player their efforts in saving it.
One quest saves the tree from festering toxins below its roots — and the tree’s colors
change from green to fluorescent white as a result.
Another quest by the name of Aurora has you activate monoliths around the map that direct energy to the WorldTree. The quest climaxes by
having the tree give off a swirling, sparkling aura that hangs perpetually while you travel the world and complete more objectives.
It even matches your affinity — if you’re taking the side of love and justice, the aura is white, while if you play for the destruction of the planet, the aura will hang black.
What’s special about these to me is that they don’t
do anything. They don’t get you any closer to saving the world or the tree, but they definitely did something important –
The WorldTree’s central location in the map and absolutely massive scale allow for it to be seen at all times from just about anywhere in
Biomutant’s world. This means, after I had completed these two quests, the fruits of my labor were on gloriously beautiful display at all times.
Biomutant’s mementos aren’t keepsakes you can’t take with you when you leave the planet — they’re
visual celebrations of your hard work, an ever-present reminder of your endeavors and care for a dying world. —
More briefly,
Cyberpunk 2077 allowed you to fill V’s apartment with keepsakes as well, featuring dream catchers, posters, paintings, action figures and more.
In
Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance Ace Azzameen’s personal quarters would fill up with medals and displays as you progressed through the game.
In
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, some of the most legendary Zelda equipment ever was available to the player, including the Sword of Six Sages, the Fierce Deity Sword, and the Biggorons Sword — all of which can be hung in display cases in Link’s home.
Meanwhile,
Uncharted 4 greets players near its opening sequence with an attic filled with memorabilia and keepsakes that Nathan Drake himself has kept after all these years. It’s not us — the players — ourselves collecting and hoarding, but it was lovely to see Drake thinking along the same lines as us souvenir psychopaths.
—
I’ll end with gaming’s classic — Mario. The red-hatted Italian also did the keepsake thing in one of his most beloved installments.
Super Mario: Odyssey allowed you to
decorate The Odyssey with stickers and trinkets from your escapades by spending purple coins you could collect while out adventuring on one of the game’s many worlds.
A vanilla
Odyssey player’s ship might look the same as it did at the game’s start, but a completionist might have a slew of trinkets and décor, like:
• Peach’s Model Castle • Dinosaur models and trophies • Shiverian Nesting Dolls • A plush frog • Flowers and a watering can from Steam Gardens • Statues of Pauline, Jaxi, Jizo • A lamp and rock fragment of the moon
Hell, the
game director himself sounds like he’s read this very article:
“But what about decorating the ship? There’s a shop that appears in many kingdoms where you can buy souvenirs and stickers using the purple coins you’ve gathered.
Collecting memories is one of the best parts of traveling, don’t you think?” –Kenta Motokura
The ability to make
The Odyssey your own
evolved the traditional fetch-quest nature of collectible gathering and drove the player to go that little bit of extra distance in exploring and engaging with the various kingdoms and mastering the game’s platforming.

Video game narratives and their accompanying worlds are monstrously large nowadays. As enjoyers of the medium, us gamers spend a lot of time in them.
Like, a lot.
In recognition of this, game developers have given gamers a number of distinct tools to document their triumphs and sagas — each with their own unique flavor of congratulations and commemoration.
For our enormous investment with huge worlds and long, winding quests,
something tangible we can keep hold of provides value, meaning, memories. They make our journey — one which we have committed so much to — special, transcendent, our own. They give us things
no other entertainment medium can give.
So fuck photo mode. A picture isn’t worth a thousand words — my keepsakes are.

2024.05.20 19:38 ButtGallon Girlfriend and I just played the first few minutes of ZTD and made a bingo card. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out!
For clarity:
Visual Glitches from VLR: throughout our entire playthrough of VLR we had visual glitches that would occasionally jumble the screen around for a split second
Kyle is the stupid looking guy: we’re predicting that Kyle’s consciousness from the secret ending of VLR has to be someone from this game, and this square gets ticked if somehow the weird looking guy with the bowl cut ends up getting sent into Kyle’s future body
We actually like the kid: we were convinced Quark was somehow a villain throughout the entirety of VLR, and we’re expecting to hate the new orb-headed kid the same way we hated quark. This square gets ticked if we actually end up liking him

2024.05.20 18:18 Chavez1020 Chapter from a book I'm writing
Hey, been writing this for a while. Got a dozen chapters at the moment. All of whom are interviews from veterans after a global war between humanity and aliens.
The premise is that after a short conflict/flashpoint between NATO and Russia in the baltics, that region becomes incredibly militarized as both sides pile up army units preparing for an inevitable conflict in the near future. Then you have meteors hitting Lithuania and Latvia. Which turns out were carrying an unknown Alien race which attempted to desperately colonize earth after their home planet was rendered inhabitable.
This is but one of the chapters. Fyi when they refer to crabs, they are talking about the alien cannon fodder units, 1 to 3m tall bipedal beings that have the face of crustaceans.
Feel free to give me any criticism you'd like. This is just a taste of what I'm working, if people are interested I will share more.
November 2034, Gdansk. European Federation
Pzschemek courteously welcomes me into his apartment, gently balancing his half-asleep young boy in one arm as he opens the door. The 34th floor of this public housing tower was completed just a year ago. As a combat veteran, the governement paid half of the price on the already affordable apartment. Since the official end of hostilities and the remarkable population surge, these towering structures, inspired by their Asian counterpart, have sprouted in nearly every remaining major city across the continent. Having seen combat from the start all the way to the end, I was referred to him by the head of the Polish Army Land Forces who was his battalion commander during the start of the war.
I'm offered a seat on the living room sofa, amidst scattered toys and clothes strewn about. He settles across from me, his son peacefully asleep in his arms, after preparing coffee for us.
A veteran of the war, he had seen combat all across Poland as a tank commander.
"When I began my training, we operated with the PT-91, an upgraded Soviet-designed T-72—sturdy, but we viewed them as deathtraps. Just imagine our optimism when my battalion received our first Leopards 2a7. Transitioning from a 1980s Soviet tank to modern german, American and ever Korean tanks—before the war in Ukraine, even entertaining such a notion aloud would have warranted a psychological evaluation. After a year or so. I knew that thing inside and out. It had short comings but it was a beauty.
He points to a frame on the wall—a cutout of a newspaper front page. It depicts him and his other crew members atop their tank ‘Sokoly’ written on its cannon, with a destroyed tripod lying on the floor behind them, the backdrop a sight of a ravaged city. With the title; “Our boys took Vilnius!"
"We made the front page of Gazeta Wyborcza with that picture. Our company commander sent it in. My parents hadn't heard from me in weeks, and one day, he recognized me on the front page at a news stand."
His face lights up with a warm smile.
"We hit the road five hours after the first landings. My vehicle was still getting fueled when I drove into our base, rushing to the briefing room in my jeans and rain jacket. I was expecting orders to be to rush to the Belarusian border or help out our guys in Lithuania to fend of the russians. Instead, our company commander starts talking about visitors from another world, how the info keeps pouring in every minute, but everything's still up in the air. We didn’t believe him until we saw the footage of the meteor landings, or air force footage from the airstrikes on beings we didn’t even know could exist. That one footage from that tank station, those crabs walking in and shooting all those civilians really set us off. That segment where one crab ripped out the arm of a dead man to make sure he was dead must have filled us with hate. Even do we didn’t know who or what they were. We didn’t ask too many questions. You’d expect us to yell out stuff in the likes of “Have we tried to make contact with them? What is the United Nations saying? From what planet are they?” but the only questions that could be heard was “Did the 2-5 tank get its tracks fixed? How much water should we take? Do we get our shells here or the TAA?”
“We were scared don’t get me wrong but I’m still proud of my boys, Its been a while but we still have contact with each other. Last summer I was the best man at my loader’s wedding.”
After laying down his boy, who had just woken up, he watches as the little one instantly grabs a toy police car and starts playing with it. Pzshemek gazes at his son, lost in thought, as he happily engages with his toy.
"We spent five hours on the road, with our tanks hitched onto trucks. When we finally reached our deployment area, chaos was everywhere. The roads were packed with cars from the north—Polish, Lithuanian, even Russian and Belarussian plates. People crammed into buses, I even saw a truck with an empty container but packed with civilians inside. On one van, boys sat on top, like scenes from trains in India. It's a miracle we only arrived an hour late. In Suwalki, we turned an Ikea parking lot into a makeshift FOB. Half of it was filled with troops fresh back from Lithuania and the border. Fresh might not be the right word. They were ravaged, they sat in silences. Nearly all with bandages or injuries of some sorts. The heavily wounded were being treated in tents and civilian ambulances. The dead layed in rows and rows of bodybags. They had commandeered one of or trench building vehicles to dig a mass grave for them. Helicopters landed, unloaded countless men and they loaded the helis to the brim with the injured. Tents and tents of make shift hospitals. More and more troops arrived. They looked like they’ve been to hell. I remember at one time my gaze met one of the men. I was looking around until I saw him looking at me. He was sitting on a stretcher being treated by a paramedic, his chest and arms were burned black. He was staring at me. I don’t know if it was the morphine or the shock, his gaze wouldn’t leave me. Fighter jets kept buzzing us. On our way to bomb targets and to slow the advance of the crabs down as much as they could. I was confident on our way there but the sight of all those defeated man made me want to empty my guts. We got called to a tent to get a briefing on the situation. There was a white board with grainy pictures of what we could expect. Even drawings. It was the Polish military attaché to Lithuania himself who gave the briefing to us. He looked like he had been to hell. I learned later he had to be restrained with the help of punches and shoved into the last helicopter out of Vilnius by his men.”
“What did he discuss?”
"We're in the dark, and we're counting on you to keep us informed as you hold the line. My English doesn't do it justice, but that was the last thing he said before we set out. We knew more different type of enemy assets would emerge as they settled in. Turns out, our drones spotted them digging into the meteors they landed in. As we left the FOB, they were loading everything onto anything with a motor and wheels. They didn't anticipate us holding our ground. Now, that's what I call motivation.”
Our chat got interrupted when Pszemek's wife walking into the apartment, decked out in nurse scrubs and juggling grocery bags. Pszemek jumped up to help her out, and they headed to the hallway, chatting away in Polish. Before she disappeared into the dimly lit bedroom, they stole a quick kiss.
“She has the night shift.” He said coldly as he put away the groceries. “We got on our tanks, our entire company made it and we were lined up platoon by platoon.
I closed the hatch, sat down, put my helmet on. My loader who also was my assistant of sorts. Installed the radios, helped copy the maps our lieutenant got, made coffee or passed drinks. He gave me a thumbs up, it was our signal and it meant we had radio communications with everyone that mattered. I pressed the push to talk of my microphone. “Everyone in position? Sound off!” I tried to say firmly and calmly. I knew back then it wasn’t the time to show any fear to my boys.
“Driver ready!” One voice yelled loudly. “Gunner ready!” followed by “Loader ready!” we set off right after that
At Suwalki we had to hold the highway entering the city from the north. Nothing particular, just fields and roads. We would have excelled there if we faced anything other than that. As dawn broke. The air strikes and artillery lured closer and closer. Along with our reconnaissance elements on the radio notifying us every time they got one kilometer closer. We could just sit there, it took us five minutes to mark and call out points of interests in that field so that we could communicate quickly during the battle and then we counted down the kilometers between us and them. Some men smoked, wrote letters. My gunner, a young guy he must have been 19 back then. He opened the hatch suddenly to vomit outside. Our nerves were all over the place. We nearly shot our recon troops as they speeded through our lines. They rushed through us and took cover behind us. They had done their job warning us and coordinating airstrikes. I told my boys it was our moment to shine. That whatever may walk, run, crawl over the border that we were the Polish anvil set on stopping them. We sat at two kilometers from the first woodline. We had infantry in the woods to our west and east. We had the open fields. We had to stop them or win time for the folks in Suwalki. But this wasn’t Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia. This was Poland. We wouldn’t give them an inch. We all grew up listening to our grandparents talking about what the Nazis and Soviets did to them and to our country.
At first, it was lone crabs on that wood line. They moved from tree to tree. We could see their silhouettes on the thermal sights. As more of those crab joined them we didn’t bother to shoot. We called in the mortar platoon to take care of them. Even after the mortars landed and took care of the first ones, their numbers grew. Then when there mobs of them we called in the 155mm artillery. It turned that forest. We felt the shockwaves as it blasted them. Trees were shredded and their pieces sent hundreds of meter away. Then we heard the first rumble of the beetles. I still have no idea why they didn’t appear on my thermals with all the heat they were carrying inside. If it wasn’t for the dawn and the reflection of the moonlight I might not have seen it until it was on top of me. Those things were as big as an apartment block. I still can't wrap my head around how those beasts survived a journey across galaxies. Must be why they were so darn hard to kill. We had no idea how they fought, how fast they could move. We called them beetles because it was the only thing earth like we could remotely compare them to in shape. I felt my heart race when I switched to normal sight and saw one of them move. I was looking right at it yet it appeared black as the solid on my thermal heat sight. There must have been six of them pushing that field alone. Against twelve of our tanks and three platoon’s worth of infantrymen and IFVs, you'd think we could've held them. But when they carpet-bombed us with fire, everyone lost it. Those beasts opened their mouth as their throat expanded, the fire inside of that could hurt to look at if you watched it with the naked eye. We didn’t know what to expect, but them spitting magma on us wasn’t on our bingo list so to say. Sure, they were two hundred meters short, but everyone outside of tanks must've felt the heat. They fired what could only be described as ropes of magma all in unison. The infantry platoon beside us, even the most ‘gung ho’ grunts who had had time to dig trenches, said ‘fuck that’ did a 180 and sprinted back a few hundred meters. Our platoon commander was swearing up a storm on the radio, trying to get their commander to get his men in order. Can't blame them. We opened fire right after their attempt to cremate us. I told my gunner to aim for the head and fire. Even with the shock of the 122mm armor-piercing shell hitting it, the thing just staggered and kept moving. Even in the tank, with all that armor and my ear protection, I could still hear my colleagues unloading on them. Again and again I ordered my gunner to go for the head. I still don’t know how they survived the kinetic shock alone of a shell like that hitting them. Later on in the war we learned that it gave them those weird types of concussions that made them act all weird, made them even attack their own side and such. But at the time, you can imagine me sitting there looking at them eating a tank shell like it was nothing. One shell hit its upper back. We saw the shell ricochet of its back and fly god knows where in the horizon behind it. My loader was grabbing shells and loading them in the breech at a rythm he could have gotten a medal for that alone. They were getting closer. The beetles and the crabs moving in with them. They spit fire again in unison. This time they were right on the mark. I heard the commander of the tank on my left yell in the radio as his tank ate hot magma. They were safe for now on the inside but the panic it instilled, there was nothing like it. Keep in mind, we still had 155mm artillery landing, it didn’t seem to be bothered by it even do the crabs next to those things were turned into moshed potatoes by the shrapnel and shock blast.
Pszemek got up suddenly to move his kid away from the kitchen as he tried to grab a hold of the hot coffee pot.
“little devil” he said silently.
“When I realized we couldn’t pierce it from the front I ordered by gunner to go for its knee caps. He didn’t hesitate and put its sight on it. The beetle was moving slowly enough for him to aim. My loader, exhausted from carrying shell after shell yelled out “GOTOWY” with a blood curling yell right before my gunner pulled the trigger on the joystick. The ignition on the shell shook the tank as it always did. It’s like a giant punch that makes the whole vehicle jolt backward violently. You can feel the force ripple through the tank, and everything inside shakes for a moment before it steadies again thanks to the suspension. The shell hit it right on the mark. The beast lost its footing. It crashed face-down, crushing a few crabs beneath it who were taking cover under it. It took a few moments for the creature to rise on another leg. Sharp as a fox, my gunner aimed for the first leg on the opposite side and fired another armor piercing shell through the meaty split between its strong carapace. The devil was down. With its front legs disabled, it had no balance. Instinctively, I grabbed the radio. The radio was buzzing with "NO EFFECT ON THE TARGET" and "LIEUTENANT, LET'S GET OUTTA HERE, FOR GOD'S SAKE." I shouted at my colleagues to aim for the kneecaps to slow them down. It got everyone to shut up and focus at the task at hand.
One by one, the beetles crashed in the mud. Don’t get me wrong, they kept shooting their magma at us. My tank got some aswell. It cooked our thermal sights and lazer warning receivers instantly. But since our engine was spared we just had to reverse back twenty meters and we were alright. We were speeding at 30km/h in reverse, I was praying there wouldn’t be a confused 20 year old infantry man end up under our tracks. The beetles were everything but precise. They even hit their own crabs as they desperately spat fire. The amount of which was drastically lower than earlier, their fuel tank just like ours were running low. One brave bastard on the radio yelled out for us to wait for it to fire and then hit it right in the mouth. That’s literally a tactic out of a video game. We did as he told. My gunner was with his sight right on what can be described as its mouth. His knee shaked in anticipation of the shot. I was looking at the gunner sight through my screen. As it opened its mouth, I didn’t even have time to yell “FIRE” that my gunner had already unleashed a high explosive shell down that thing’s throat.”
Pszemek looked at his boy with a warm smile as he thought back at one of the few good events of that fateful night.
“The devil exploded, the flash was so bright it lit up the interior of our tank through the periscopes. For a second I could see the exhausted look on my loader sweaty face. The fire gulf must have taken out god knows how many of the crabs taking shelter near it. My entire platoon followed suit and before long the entire field lit up with the explosions of those devils. I heard later from the folks in Suwalki that they saw the flashes of light all the way back there. One by one we took them out like that.
With the beetles out of the picture, we made quick work of the crabs. They were only five hundred meters away, close enough to start firing. Against our tanks, they didn’t stand a chance. The infantry was less fortunate. I saw one of them fire one of their shoulder mounted cannon, hit an IFV on its side and afterwards I saw the crew throwing themselves out of their vehicle as they burned alive. We took out three-quarters of them before they scrambled back across the field the way they came. Then we picked them off as they ran. Our coaxial gun was working overtime, we barely could keep up reloading that machine gun. I was praying it would’nt jam or overheat. With the last one down and our lieutenant on the radio, praising our performance, I unlocked my hatch, swung it open, and peeked outside. There were still patches of molten magma here and there, and the whole field reeked of sulfur and gunpowder. People were treating the wounded, some men cried, some men were laughing hysterically. Most of them were quiet. I lit up a cigarette, wiping the sweat off my face with a towel. The loader tossed me a can of Monster from our makeshift fridge. I gave him props for his work before he collapsed from exhaustion.
We could have stayed there, all of us would have been happy dying in that field if it meant we slowed their advance into our country. Turns out high command had other plans for us. We held but the units on our flanks were about to break. They had already plans for if ww3 popped off. They already know which unit would be desimated and which would have been spared if the Russians had decided to attack. The worst case scenario had a defensive line from Gdansk through Olsztyn all the way to Bialystok. We had the momentum as we cowardly fled back to Augustow. Stopping time and time again to give time for refugees to flee south. We were glad the Russians in Kaliningrad took a beating. They estimated they held ¾ of the crabs in the southern front. Every fight was harder than the last. We had less and less ammo. Jets were flying less and less. Especially when the crabs found a way to shoot them off the sky.
We felt like cowards every time. Sure we got allot of civilians safe, but even then we felt like we failed despite how many Crabs, Tripods or beetles we stopped.

2024.05.20 17:31 JElevons Just finished the campaign; my thoughts as a gamedev and Homeworld fan (long post)
So first I should preface this with my bias; I've been a Homeworld fan since the 1999 release when I was 10 years old. Now I'm 35 and have started my own family - so it's been a crazy journey. Homeworld was instrumental in my career, passions, everything. The reason I'm a dev now is because I learned to mod because of Homeworld. So to say I'm biased towards liking the series is probably an understatement.
Another bias I have is that I
strongly prefer Homeworld 1 over Homeworld 2, for many reasons. When I played Homeworld 3 I was dimly aware that there was some negative sentiment that it removed features from Homeworld 2 that players enjoyed.
I have not read any of the online discourse since getting the game: I wanted to go in completely fresh-eyed.
With that out of the way I'll also save everyone some time: I absolutely loved Homeworld 3.
It was what we were hoping for with Homeworld 2: Dust Wars and I am here for it. For newer fans of the series, or fans that might not know,
Dust Wars was demoed in 2008...ish? It introduced the megaliths and the concept of fighting within giant space structures. Then it was scrapped because of tech limitations at the time and that's why Homeworld 2 had to restart it's development halfway through.
So Homeworld 3 is basically what Homeworld 2 was supposed to be and IMO it nails it. Here are my thoughts. For all of them I'm going to start with the areas I could see improving and then talk about the areas I thought it did well because in my opinion it did so much well that I just want to get the could-be-improved stuff out of the way first.
Story: Could be improved: - The cutscene where Karan and Imogen foreshadowed the lullaby cypher felt a bit stilted. When Karan says "I know goodbyes are hard. Let me sing our lullaby", it just felt forced.
- There was a pretty big logical leap right after we met Karan. I thought the reunion between the two was heartwarming and well-voice acted. Karan says: "The queen is coming for the sajuuk's progenitor cores...she will be able to harness the energy from the entire gate network. Nearly infinite power" and then Imogen replies with "in that moment her systems would be open...and we could override...if we were very close to her temple." it's a huge unprompted logical jump. I have no idea why she would say that other than to move the story along.
- At the end of the final mission I felt like it wasn't really communicated that we would also be stuck there. What does it mean that our cores were overloaded? Are they permanently damaged? I also don't feel like it was well communicated as to why Karan had to join the Queen. I assumed it's because her cores were used. Regardless of the reasons I really liked this part of the story, see below.
- Karan/Imogen's line "To be Hiigaran is to never be alone" is a little cheesy but hey it's spaceships and laser guns, I didn't mind. :)
- EDIT: This post (https://www.reddit.com/homeworld/comments/1cwidye/comment/l4wg6vz/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=mweb3x&utm\_name=mweb3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button) really made me rethink the ending from a different perspective; the forgiveness of the queen was really underserved at the end of the game. By that point I had forgotten about the billions of people she murdered and now that this poster brings it up it cheapens the stakes and is honestly very out of character for Karan, so I've adjusted my rating on this one. the story, IMO is still a lot of fun and if you replace her killing billions with maybe, IDK, conquering planets or something or holding hyperspace hostage, the story would still be good IMO. But this hole is just so large it knocks the whole thing down. It was enjoyable and it hasn't been lessened for me but yea, objectively it's a major flaw.
Now that that's out of the way -
The Awesome: - The story was really character driven, much more so than in any other games in the series and I thought it was done really ll. Powerful female leads working with an immensely intelligent male lead. Everyone's motivations made sense and they reacted logically to lots of situations. I really loved the villain but we'll talk about her in a bit.
- I felt like the transhumanist themes were really interesting and this game dove deep into what it might be like in the Homeworld universe to essentially become a living starship, capable of hyperspace flight. We really looked at what it would mean for a human consciousness to grow to the size of a living starship. It also ties in well with the Queen's arc; how she had been elevated to godhood and found herself all alone, abandoned by her people. What would it be like to have the power of a god but only have yourself to talk to about it?
- The Queen and Karan literally ascending into hyperspace was also a very cool thought. Literally moving to the next plane of existence by existing in another reality. What gods could we become?
- Fleet Intelligence was well acted and worked really well with Fleet Command. It was refreshing to see two professionals working together for a common goal, which you don't usually see in contemporary media anymore.
- I think the Queen was a solid villain. Her motivations were simple but easily understandable and extended from the trauma of being used and abandoned by her people. Her and Karan's arc remind me a bit of a Terry Pratchett book called "Small Gods". In it, the villain is a monstrous head of the church, torturing etc. The hero of the book, Brother, ends up killing him and restoring the church to a more peaceful path, becoming a prophet of their god Ohm. When he dies 100 years later, he finds his former enemy lost in the sands of eternity and rather than ascending to heaven himself, takes pity on him and walks with him. I felt like regardless of why Karan had to join her, I feel like her doing so was a really complex character moment and humanized an enemy that would have otherwise been a very simplistic villain. I appreciated it.
Art/Technical Design: Could be improved: - I felt like Imogen was pretty oversexualized. She was basically naked, down to showing individual toes. She could have at least had maybe more average features?
- Not a huge fan of the unit designs. I like the idea of the Hiigaran ship being designed to a top-down profile and the Incaranate to a side profile. However I feel like the Hiigaran ships lacked interesting silhouettes and the Incarnate were very overwright with way too many lines. I think the two factions adhered too strictly to horizontal/vertical profiles and should have mixed it up more. Witnes the original Taiidan ships, which IMO are the pinnacle of Homeworld ship design but I know that's subjective.
- Unit pathfinding is pretty dumb.
The Awesome: - Cutscene characters were great and it's awesome to see the evolution from hand-drawn black and white, to hand drawn color, to color CGI mimicking hand drawn to full CGI standing on it's own, with still a little bit of that limited movement from a hand drawn animatic.
- Some really amazing shots, the one where the mothership broke free of the ice was beautiful and really sticks out in my mind. The build up of cosmic "sand" in the bowels of the great megaliths, or the perspective of seeing massive capital ships dwarfed by gigantic planar objects they move across. The environments really told a story and were so well crafted to the mood of the levels.
- The blend of technical and artistic design is so beautiful and uniquely Homeworld. The vast windswept frozen planes, the deep clouds and volumetric shadows, the bright flares as explosions rip apart massive warships; technically speaking from every aspect the game is gorgeous.
- The megaliths are just really inspirational and I absolutely love them.
UX: Could be improved: - If you don't turn on unit health bars it is really hard to see what ships you have selected.
- Sometimes I would auto-select multiple units of a single type and that was frustrating.
- The concept of formation or group leads was never really explained, would be nice to see.
The Awesome: - Love the flexibility in the camera and gameplay systems.
- The ship selection system combines the best elements of Homeworld 2 (picture icons) and Homeworld 1 (grouping similar ship types instead of showing an icon for each one). Personally I still prefer the text list of Homeworld 1 but ya gotta change with the times.
- I really enjoyed the menus and how they plus the in-game interface felt very advanced and technically competent.
Gameplay: I'll just generally talk about this one. I really enjoyed it - the megaliths offer an exciting new challenge and I like how the idea of terrain close maneuvering is expanded on in the manual lore. It gives you a lot more tactical freedom and flexibility compared to old school deep space slugfests. The fact that ballistics simulations seem to be back is amazing. I think the pairing down of features from Homeworld 2 was great; upgrades are simple and attached to the ship they're applied to, they don't have a lot of variations, etc. I know some people miss subsystem targeting but tbh I never used it and I don't care that it's gone. I love that we have real individual units back and real formations. The gameplay is much more 3D, like the original Homeworld. Homeworld 2 felt super flat. Now we even have directional damage.
I can't comment on game balance because I've only played the campaign and it was on Medium so I absolutely plowed through it. In the final level the Titan vessel could only launch two or three frigates before being dropped to 50% health and having to retreat. So any comments I have on balance wouldn't really be relevant to the overall game.
Overall I just really, really like this game. It feels like they took all the stuff they added in Homeworld 2 that to me made it less Homeworld and removed or refined them. Then they went back to Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2: Dust Wars and just took all of that into the modern day. It's a great experience and I'd highly recommend it. My personal Homeworld series rankings would be:
- Homeworld 1 or 3
- Homeworld Cataclysm or Deserts of Kharak
- Homeworld 2
I would give Homeworld 3:
Story (EDITED): 6.5/10
Art: 9/10
UX: 9.5/10
Gameplay: 10/10

2024.05.20 17:07 Elden_Lady Is it Okay to finish a Sleeve with a Different Artist?
Hello, first time poster here! I have a beautiful tattoo on my outer right arm/shoulder. I love this tattoo dearly, and it means a lot to me. I am planning on building it into a sleeve, but here is my concern: I found out much later that The artist I went to (who is still incredibly skilled!!) traced the design from a freelance artist’s online work. Like, shading and everything. I want the sleeve to feature original artwork of popular characters, but not at the expense of an artist who did not get paid. And it looked nothing like the reference I showed, anyway. As I said, I ADORE this tattoo, but am thinking about seeing another artist to finish the sleeve. Is that rude of me to do? My first artist was very good with his line work and shading, it just was stolen from another person. Is that normal, and justification enough for me to see someone else?

2024.05.20 17:07 Agneus [Online] [5e] [18+] [GMT+1] Virtues of Essence - Roleplay Focused Mystery and Lore Driven Forgotten Realms Campaign seeking a replacement player
“What defines virtue and how are we to gauge it? An inquiry that reverberates through epochs, its answer as fickle and capricious as the fates of those who deem to ask it. Duty, honor, justice - many over the ages would name these virtues, the conduits through which noble intentions find expression. Yet, as the battlefield of beliefs unfolds, a legion emerges, each as sworn to these principles as to obliterating all who would dare stake alike claim. Thus, battles rage and wars are waged and, in the end, those who are left are no more right than those fell by the blade. Alas, it is the victors whose ideals are etched into monuments for posterity. Except even words chiseled in unyielding stone are fated to fade in time. So is the wicked cycle destined to repeat in all its futility, its ephemeral prize seized again, only to be lost and sought anew. Try and picture, if for but a moment, a world where our rulers paused to reflect on the lessons of yore. They, too, would discern the elixir that enables one to escape the confines of memory—the very burden our fleeting nature forbids us to carry. Progress and evolution. Adaptability and transcendence. Everlasting and yet not stagnant, irrefutable, and yet fluid, these are the only true virtues. Thus, must we ever venture into the uncharted and unfamiliar for only from these unexplored domains may the truly virtuous arise.” Where: Discord (Video and Voice) + FoundryVTT
When: every Saturday 5 - 9/10 pm GMT+2 (CEST), 11 am - 3/4 pm EST Who: party of 4 players and a DM seeking one extra player
Updates: Recruitment updates will be posted here.
Hello there and well met! If you’ve made it past the flavor text (or skipped it) and through the basic info (hopefully didnt skip past that one) you might very well be at the right address! Without further ado onto the post.
🐲The campaign🐲
Having only just recovered from the Second Sundering and the War of the Silver Marches, the North had been ravaged by a whole new set of tumultuous events - the rise of the Cult of the Dragon and that of the Absolute, the Fall of Eltruel and the short reign of the beholder crime lord Xanathar just some among them. After a brief respite from the twisted and the unnatural the clouds once more begin to gather. Along the Long Road, whole hosts of wild beasts and monsters have been accosting travelers seemingly at random and in the grand metropolis of Waterdeep a sudden rise in crime seems to coincide with strange events passing unnoticed beneath the surface. Amidst all this, in spring of 1493 DR, a party of adventurers delves into a mystery of enchanted gemstones being utilized to nefarious ends by unknown perpetrators all the while navigating the labyrinthine twists of city faction politics.
As implied by the post title, this is an ongoing campaign (we are 12 sessions in at the time of this post). Due to some irl commitments weve recently dropped a player and are looking to replace them.
As the title suggests, this is a roleplay focused mystery/lore driven campaign. Expect an overreaching plot with ample secrets to uncover, conspiracies to unravel and eldritch truths to unearth. The first word of the password is "Doth". On the same level of importance or more important even be that the players preference, there is a variety of subplots to engage with, from small and goofy and random to ones rivaling the main story arc in complexity and variance. Among these, individual character story arcs play a leading role, at times seamlessly intertwined with the current focus of the party, at times separate and independent.
As was already mentioned and is further described below, this is a roleplay focused campaign and a roleplay heavy game. This means that roleplay exists as a unifying concept for all other aspects of the game including exploration, combat, and puzzles. That said DnD is only DnD with all three of its main pillars intact and this campaign is no exception in that regard. I very much enjoy the mechanical side of the game as well besides roleplay and so things like multiphase boss fights and custom magic items are definitely on the table.
🧙♂️The DM🧙♂️
Hello there, Jay here, 25 yo law student from Central Europe currently working on finishing his master’s degree, trying to stay afloat in the current lease market. I study and work in a law firm by day and DM or play DnD by night (more like evening but night sounded cooler). I have been a big fan of TTRPGs since my early teens and of online DnD for the past five years. I’ve DMed multiple campaigns, finished CoS not least among them and I currently play in a long-term campaign. Before you ask, yes, my schedule is strained but not to the point I am unable to engage with my hobbies.
I would describe my DMing style as driven, realistic, and involved but also very conscious about player agency and collaborative storytelling as core values that make TTRPGs so popular and unique. I spend a lot of time ensuring the worlds I create and the stories I want to tell feel alive. From hand-picked music, to fully voiced NPCs and scenic descriptions designed to breathe life into the campaign setting I daresay my games rival in quality those of the professional DMs that charge for each session.
There is a drawback to this all however. Second word of the password is "thy". I expect a lot from my players as well. Writing a story in DnD is not a one person job. It takes a collective effort of the entire group to create something truly unique, something that one can be proud while looking forward to each session. Unwinding and letting off steam means something else for everyone. For me it means losing myself in the creative process of roleplaying an NPC or describing a scene, watching my players masterfully portray their own characters or having the party derail my plans in an awesome unforeseen and unexpectedly enriching way. If you find yourself in any of what I just described than this may be a game for you. If you don’t, that’s fine. This is definitely not a game for everyone.
🏰The setting🏰
Forgotten Realms is a default setting of Dungeons and Dragons but it is anything but boring and mundane. With now decades worth of lore behind it, it offers an unparalleled opportunity for anyone wanting to build on solid foundations to bring their ideas to life. While it has garnered a lot of attention lately with the release of a certain videogame (more people now know Astarion than a good amount of Hollywood celebrities I’d say) it has had its loyal following even before then, being constantly expanded and living its own life in a host of both online and home games. It’s been a natural choice of mine for a while now and not once have I had any regrets. The third word of the password is "mirror". I feel with how great of a variety of content the Forgotten Realms offer everybody is able to pick something that suits their creative vision. In summary the Forgotten Realms almost feel like a real place with how much worldbuilding has been done with them and offer a diversity of content few other TTRPG settings can boast.
When it comes to setting of the campaign in the world of Faerun I have once again made a somewhat traditional pick and decided to place the onset of the game onto the Sword Coast, more precisely into the city of Waterdeep. If one of the key upsides of Forgotten Realms is diversity of content, Waterdeep is one of the best representations of this. Being the largest settlement on the known Faerun, Waterdeep offers nigh limitless options in terms of main story arc genre, character creation and character backstory implementation. It has everything every large TTRPG settlement ought to have (fickle upper class, enigmatic factions, quaint taverns and extravagant nightclubs, always in bad mood city watch, a castle and a harbor) as well as few pretty original ideas such as colossal definitely not alive statues, a city council where even its members don’t know each other’s identity and a massive dungeon right underneath the city where you can literally fall right from a tavern taproom.
In case you are wondering, while this campagn takes place primarily in the city of Waterdeep itself, there is nothing stopping the players from exploring past the city if they so choose. The final word of the password is "crack?". Different parts of the main plot and various subplots can and will encourage the party to explore Waterdeep environs and sometimes even further.
📃The requirements📃
No exceptions here. Unless otherwise stated, the requirements must be met
at the time of application.
- to apply you need to be 20+ yo
- you need a functioning webcam (at the time of application) and a stable internet connection - we will be using both video and voice on discord and as a general rule Wifi doesn’t handle long video calls well (believe me when I say I speak from experience) so cable or other similar form of stable connection is strongly encouraged
- you need a Discord account and you will need a Forge account - Forge is a hosting service for Foundry, don’t worry, you won’t need to input any personal info (besides maybe an email) to register and I will be footing the bill
- you need a PC that can and will run Foundry Virtual Tabletop - check the minimum requirements on the Foundry website, a fair warning, Foundry won’t run on tablets and phones (not that you should consider those in the first place)
- you need at least an elementary knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition - when it comes to the awareness of the rules, I won’t be too harsh, but definitely don’t apply if the first time you’ve seen the PHB was a week ago
- you need TTRPG/roleplay experience and/or a very strong roleplay inclination - this is a heavy roleplay game where most if not all ingame talk will be done in character and where you will be expected to voice your character in a way that is distinct from your standard voice
- you will need to be very punctual when it comes to session attendance - I expect my players to attend most if not all sessions, online or not, this campaign is a designed as a longterm commitment and by applying you are acknowledging this, having other hobbies and time-consuming real-life obligations is understandable (I got those too) but those 4-5 hours you will be expected to set aside for the session
🙋♂️How to sign up🙋♀️
Youve made it all the way to the end of this long post. Congratulations. Or maybe you’ve skipped all the way to the end. In that case I strongly recommended you go back. If not to learn what you are applying for than to make sure you haven’t missed something very important. Now if you are confident that you have what it takes and that this is a game that you could have a lot of fun with, please fill the below attached google questionnaire (if for any strange reason the link doesn’t end up working, please let me know in the comments under this post) and if fortune favors you, I shall get back to you promptly. Best of luck to you and I hope to speak to you soon!
https://forms.gle/5kc4RbwavJPfT8PD9 ______________________________________
PS: As a part of the questionnaire, you will be asked to submit a
short piece of your narrative writing in a form of a google doc link (not a custom piece of writing, any relevant past one you have will do). Maybe best have that ready beforehand? On that note,
dont apply for the game with a detailed backstory of a character you want to play that you arent willing to adapt to the conditions of the setting/campaign. PSS: Not to discourage you but if you do make it through the questionnaire and into the second group of applicants you will be asked to do a discord interview with your webcam turned on. I am asking you to go through a lot for a game you might not even end up liking I know, but if you do end up liking it, all this effort will be well worth it as I am sure my other players would agree.
