A proposed trade: To SAC: Tari Eason, Jock Landale
To HOU: 2024 #13, 2028 First rounder, Trey Lyles
WHY FOR SACRAMENTO: Tari Eason could be the missing piece for Sacramento. Already showing signs of being an elite defender with the ability to get tons of stocks (2.3 steals and 1.4 blocks per 36 last year), Eason also shot 36% from 3 on 2.3 3s per game (3.7 per 36). He appears to be a high-energy and effort player, with games of 18 pts/14 rebounds and 25 pts/14 rebounds last year. He’s shown the ability to play both forward spots, but is long enough (7’2 wingspan and 8’11.5 standing reach) to play a little small ball center too. Plus, he’ll be on the third year of a rookie contract, giving the Kings control for up to 6 years. He’s played on the bench the last two years, but that is likely more about circumstances and injuries; he’d be coming to Sacramento healthy and ready to take a starting spot.
If the Kings could get Eason, it also strengthens their bench without any further need for trades. Whether or not the Kings get Monk back, this would allow both Barnes and Huerter to shift to the bench, adding considerable bench scoring punch while allowing the Kings to put forward a potential defensive monster of a starting lineup that doesn’t sacrifice shooting (Fox, Ellis, Murray, Eason, Sabonis).
Speaking of bench, Jock Landale had a rough year, but has shown the ability to be a high-end backup center in spurts. Plus, he’s on a very team-friendly contract that could be cut as early as this June if needed. He’s worth a dice roll.
WHY FOR HOUSTON: Houston would be NUTS to give up Eason. Controlled contract for a guy who could be a game-changer for them, either as a sixth man or starter.
Unfortunately for Eason, there’s a lot blocking his path to starting, and perhaps even to being a Sixth Man. The Rockets invested a 3rd overall pick in Jabari Smith Jr as their starting 4, and he’s done enough that they are unlikely to trade/bench him, even with Eason in the wings. The Rockets are paying Dillon Brooks 20 million a year to be their starting 3 (Jalen Green looks somewhat secure at the 2), and Alperin Segun is likely their center of the future. The Rockets’ bench also two more young potential stars who need minutes— Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore. Eason could emerge in spite of all those barriers, but there’s understandably a lot in his way, potentially including an upcoming 2024 #3 pick.
Houston has had some success drafting the past few years, and is likely cognizant of the number of stars that have come out of the late lottery during “weak” draft years (Kawhi Leonard, Giannis Antetoukumpo, Tyrese Halliburton, etc.). A late lottery pick this year might be a chance to add a cost-controlled star with two more years of control than Eason. Add in a 2028 1st from the chaotic Kings, and there may be two chances for a star, or alternately, more additional pieces to trade for a big star. Houston would be crazy to let Eason go, but a two mystery box chances might be tempting in their current circumstances.
Lyles gets thrown in because he’s a bench upgrade over Landale, as the Rockets have Adams at backup center, but could use an additional shooting big as Jeff Green ages.
FINAL WORD: This might be pie in the sky, but the Kings should absolutely do due diligence on this possibility. Eason would be a perfect addition for a Kings’ team that might be a 3-and-D forward from championship contention.

Context: “The Jordan Rules” is a 1991 book written by Sam Smith that chronicled the Chicago Bulls' 1990–91 championship season. One of my biggest concerns heading into this offseason is that fundamentally, there’s a disconnect and lack of alignment between Booth/the front office and Malone/the coaching staff
We all know what Malone’s inclinations are as coach at this point - winning is the most important outcome (no argument from me) - young players need to earn their role and minutes on the floor and when push comes to shove, if a young player isn’t considered ready he won’t be seeing the floor much, if at all (see: Peyton Watson vs the wolves)
On its face, that doesn’t seem to align much with the most significant moves that Booth made last offseason with their only two veteran “additions” being bringing back Reggie Jackson and DAJ and signing Justin Holiday (while Bruce Brown Ish Smith and Jeff Green all signed elsewhere) - meanwhile, Booth prioritized drafting and development by taking Strawther Pickett and Tyson in the most recent draft
On the one hand, I get why Booth is pivoting towards youth and development on the bench given the new CBA + how much the starting 5 costs + the nuggets luxury tax situation (as of the start of this offseason they’re a second apron team) and that signing more proven vet players to 1 year deals every offseason isn’t sustainable for a team like the nuggets (a team that isn’t necessarily a preferred team for free agents) - at the same time, I’m sure Malone and the coaching staff understandably consider the team to firmly be a win-now team that’s right in their championship window now, with Jokic Murray and AG all in the middle of their prime and not getting any younger, combined with the relative absence of a clear favorite in the western conference at the moment
Regardless of how understandable each position/philosophy is, potential disconnect between the front office and the coaches with how they want the team to look and the trajectory of the team from a team-building perspective going forward is essentially what we saw play out this year - I wasn’t exactly expecting Strawther Pickett and Tyson to all get rotation minutes right away, but not one of Booth’s draft picks played any significant minutes after January this year, while Watson’s role and minutes started to diminish towards the end of the regular season and he ended up being a complete non factor in the second round
Clearly, the nuggets depth needs to be much stronger and more reliable next year, and whether that depth results from less patience with all the younger players next year and having the 6th-8th best players on the team be more proven veteran players, or through the young players particularly Strawther Pickett and Watson developing next year into legit rotation players who can at least be trusted for at least 8-10 minutes per game in a playoff series, the coaches and front office need to actually be in full alignment about picking a path and committing to it starting this offseason

There's box stars who don't really do much in field lacrosse. And there's field stars who don't really do much in box lacrosse. But which player is the best in the world right now when you consider both styles of play? As an NLL fan who doesn't really watch PLL very much looking at the PLL stats it looks like Tom Schreiber, Connor Fields, Jeff Teat, Josh Byrne, Dhane Smith, and Wes Berg are all stars in both leagues to varying degrees and Trevor Baptiste wins over 70% of his FO in both leagues but in your opinions who is the overall best lacrosse player in the world?

Working from a discursive screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Baird, Costner is not at his best as a director with this kind of multi-branched narrative. He struggles to keep all the story’s plates spinning, as characters are sidelined and resurface with too little connective tissue.

There’s a hallowed place in cinema for multi-character dramas. But “Horizon,” simply put, doesn’t feel like a movie. It feels like the seedbed for a miniseries. Much of what happens is wispy and not very forceful; the film doesn’t build in impact, and it seldom seems to aim in a clear direction.

A rigorous and handsome drama, finely hewn by Costner and his cast, this is an absorbing ride into the Old West.

Screen Daily:

Beautifully shot, with a deft command of period detail and a starry ensemble cast, Costner’s Civil-war set epic offers an old-fashioned celebration of the pioneer spirit – and a clutch of storylines that never quite have time to engage before the film moves on.

The Playlist (C-):

Despite the shootouts, some epic vistas (frankly, not as much as you’d expect), and a few fleeting moments of genuine tension, it all feels flat.

Indiewire (C-):

These aren’t characters so much as the spokes of a plot in human form, each of their storylines moving as if being pulled by horses across the entire span of the American West.

The Guardian (2/5):

In some ways, Horizon reminded me of Costner’s 2003 western Open Range, but that had a much more interesting performance from Costner and first-rate support from Robert Duvall and Michael Gambon. The acting here is far less impressive, and less directed. There isn’t much on the horizon here

Collider (4/10):

Credit where credit is due, Kevin Costner has made what is essentially a three-hour prologue into something that is occasionally moderately entertaining. However, just as often, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 woefully wanders every which way.

The Daily Beast (Skip This):

The biggest problem with Horizon is that, even with its lengthy running time, Costner has only scratched the surface of the “saga” he’s trying to tell. There is no arc to what happens, just the seemingly unending introduction of characters.

Vanity Fair:

At least Horizon accomplishes one staggering feat: it makes one wonder if we were maybe a little too hard on The Postman.
