Players I like in draft after watching too many YT videos

2024.05.13 20:08 Unfair_Conference423 Players I like in draft after watching too many YT videos

Here are some players I like in the draft after watching a ton of YT and going on draft sites and looking up a lot of info. I’m not trying to start a flaming war, it would be cool to have some open discussion on who people like in the draft that might be a sleeper and have some fun conversation. I’m not tied to my opinions at all and might update with new players I find cool, so without further delay:
Isiah Collier - guard USC 6’ 4’’:
This kid might be a steal in plain sight, was the consensus #1 pick before the season started, he hurt his hand and is under the radar now. He’s got absolutely elite NBA level quickness and body control, can handle the ball pretty well, and is pretty sturdy. He needs more development on his shot since he’s basically shooting flat footed, and he needs tighter handles. He plays so fast that he’s never needed to slow down, but he’s 19. If his mind is in the right place and he’s willing to work hard and is coachable. Then he could end up being an all star level player that might go late 1st.
Carlton Carrington guard - 6’ 5” from Pitt:
Super heady and veteran feel for game but needs to put on a little weight to absorb more contact, super advanced playmaking game, very aware of everything on offense, and great handles and great shooter with smooth shot, also only 18. If he puts on 10 pounds and can absorb more contact then he could be a great player with a long career IMO, kinda like a headier Lou Will with less sauce.
Tristan Da Silva 6’ 10” PF from Colorado:
Is interesting too, kinda like a 6-10 Klay Thompson. 4 year player from Colorado, got better each year. Seems to be able to hold his own ok in defending on the perimeter, he seems to rely on length to contest shots out there. Shot is silky and he can shoot on the move and shoot over defenders, can pass pretty well too. Maybe a little too slow footed at NBA level to play on perimeter but also not sturdy enough to guard players down low like Aaron Gordon.
My sneaky pick is Daron Holmes II 6’ 10” F-PF Dayton:
He’s sturdy as hell, got a 7’ 1” wingspan..people don’t like his game cause he’s juuust a tad bit too small to be as slow footed as he is, and his shot is a little janky, perhaps there are question of competition level he faced too. But he’s got a super advanced offensive game, he reacts to his defender and seems to have a lot counters to everything they throw at him. He seems to be able to score in a lot of ways. His shooting has improved every year. He’s got a very sneaky drive game, seems to understand space and how to make it, he has good handles for his size and is a tough finisher who doesn’t mind contact at all. Great rim protector for his size, willing passer and screener. Just seems kinda tough, and grown man kinda vibe that you want to root for, but idk. When I see his game I think, super janky KD with more muscle. Or small janky Embiid with more mobility.
The more I see of this kid, the more I like, but I’m not a scout or anything.
Tyler Kolek 6’ 3” G Marquette :
Kid is a gamer gamer. He’s like Austin Reeves on three lines of cocaine. He’ll eat your soul and love every second. Wants the smoke 100% of the time. Everything else about this kid is questionable. He can pass very well and has a rainbow shot that seems consistent, seems to always rise to occasions and loves doing it. But he’s only 6’ 3” and 23 years old. Isn’t especially fast or athletically gifted, he relies a lot on a running shot/layup using his left hand that defenses can’t seem to stop. Crafty player for sure.
Defense is a big question mark. This kid is like Dustin Pedroia from the MLB if people remember him. Absolute gamer but nothing about him on paper is crazy exciting. Maybe he’ll end up being like a JJ Redick type player with better passing.
Who are some of your favorites in the draft?

2024.05.12 15:41 jason_kandel Non-MTV Dream Challenge Cast Members

I have recently been watching the Circle (US) Season 6 and I really like Quori-Tyler. It got me thinking, she’s an absolute GAMER and would be perfect for The Challenge?
Anybody you’d like to see on The Challenge that hasn’t been cast there yet? Especially from other shows (be as creative and out of the box as possible but also a tad realistic)

The Undraftables: Week 5 Update (Going into/during Week 6)
I initially undertook this challenge with the NBA and decided to extend it to MLB as well. The rules are simple: I cannot select any player who has an Average Draft Position (ADP), regardless of how high or low it may be. Even if a player's ADP is 250+, they are off-limits if they have any average draft position. My draft took place on Sunday, April 7th. Admittedly, this was after the start of the season, but my focus had been primarily on the NBA season, leaving me with limited time to prepare for baseball. Nevertheless, I managed to squeeze in most of my MLB prep work within a few days/week. This is a standard 12 team head to head category league on yahoo with 6 adds per week. The buy-in was lower than my usual, but not free (inactivity and too easy).
Here was the draft results:
  1. (6) Lance McCullers Jr. (HOU - SP)
  2. (19) Drew Rasmussen (TB - SP)
  3. (30) Dustin May (LAD - SP)
  4. (43) Ronel Blanco (HOU - SP,RP)
  5. (54) Brady Singer (KC - SP)
  6. (67) Paul Blackburn (OAK - SP)
  7. (78) Cody Bradford (TEX - SP,RP)
  8. (91) Chad Green (TOR - RP)
  9. (102) Steven Matz (STL - SP,RP)
  10. (115) Tanner Houck (BOS - SP)
  11. (126) Tyler Anderson (LAA - SP)
  12. (139) Spencer Turnbull (PHI - SP)
  13. (150) Connor Joe (PIT - 1B,OF)
  14. (163) José Caballero (TB - 2B,SS)
  15. (174) Gio Urshela (DET - 1B,3B,SS)
  16. (187) Will Brennan (CLE - OF)
  17. (198) Jake McCarthy (AZ - OF)
  18. (211) Jorge Mateo (BAL - SS)
  19. (222) Dairon Blanco (KC - OF)
  20. (235) Jacob Young (WSH - OF)
  21. (246) Bubba Thompson (CIN - OF)
  22. (259) Trevor Williams (WSH - SP)
  23. (270) Reese McGuire (BOS - C)
Recent Additions from This Week (since last update from WED):
Recent Drops This Week:
Trades that I performed since my last update from WED:
Current Roster and why I choose to own them:
So here we are! I made it through yet another week with this "bad team". I would like to talk about last week's matchup: I pulled off a smashing 6-4 victory! I hit .264 and stole 11 bases (despite not fielding a full offense for half the week!) for my hitting category wins, then for pitching I won W(6), Saves(4), K(75), and WHIP(0.91)! Opponent had a crazy low era of only 2.11 to beat my very low 2.76. "Can't win them all" haha. I had extremely been benefited by selecting the best two start streamers possible! Jon Gray, Garret Crochet and Jameson Taillon came in enormously here to help! Crochet with 13k, 2.45era, 0.55whip plus a win for me, and Gray with 10k, 1.80era, 0.67whip plus a win for me, and then Taillon with 0.68era, 0.68whip plus a win!!! Having streamers with 2 starts that perform this extremely well almost guarantees winning more pitching categories. It adds "upside". Truly I got lucky in that aspect though, because no way did I expect THIS from them!!! I will take it. :) Some of my offensive hitters who helped me win my two categories were Yandy Diaz hitting .462 after I added him, Ahmed Rosario .278 with 2sb, Maikel Garcia .269, 1sb, Jose Caballero .263 with 4sb, Jacob Young 2sb, and Jake McCarthy who hit strong .357 with 1sb. I guess Sal Frelick contributed 1sb too! With this win I actually move down in standings to 3rd place with a record of 24-16. All top 4 teams are within 2 games of each other!
I would like to discuss my solo trade that I pulled off for a bit. I send out my fishing rod with a very high volume of trade offers and one of them got a bite! There is usually much communication and sometimes back and forth that happens. I type very much to my fellow managers. I been lucky they have worked with me and communicated back and forth. But this trade for this week in particular they just quickly accepted! I wrote about them getting a closer in Ginkel (even though he is likely to lose the role depending on the health of Sewald) and wrote up Ronel Blanco enormously. I had 2 paragraphs talking him up. Then I talked down about Sale regarding his health/injury history and his age where he might be washed and how he struggled in his start against weak offense in MIA. Well my narratives worked. While I don't fully thing this is a "slam dunk" guaranteed win (because those narratives are actually honest and slight concern) I do think I got the better side in large part because Sale rotation spot is secure and ATL will get plenty of wins. (Sale already has 4 wins and he is a proven winner in his illustrious career). This trade is similar to my previous trades because again I'm banking on career track record rather than "this season stats". Also, Chris Sale has been one of my favorite players for years and years now! Did I make the trade due to my fandom bias? Not really, but if I'm being honest maybe sorta? I don't like to tell my friends "I have Ronel Blanco on my team", I want to tell my friends that "I have future hall of famer Chris Sale". :) It may not work out in my favor though, we shall see!!!
My matchup for this current week features an opponent who has stolen 20 bases on the season (vs my 33) so I feel safe in that category. There will be a real close call for AVG with them hitting .269 on season (vs my .259). (Big reason why I added in Jackson Merrill). I also may move off Ruiz or drop a pitcher to sub instead of Ruiz (cuz long term the speed skills for Ruiz are too intriguing to just let go of?) and I would add a hitter with more AVG. (Jung Hoo Lee keeps staring at me so enticingly! Or maybe I'm the one staring at him? Someone tell his girlfriend/wife? haha) Number of options that I'm pontificating. I also wanted Ruiz for the doubleheader games on WED. So my move might be after those games. I concede HR and RBI as I have no chance. I may also concede Runs, but last week I was only 10 behind in runs... If I wanted to chase runs the best play would have been getting more bats from OAK and TEX (Something that might be useful to some of you in your waiver moves this week), but I decided to be playing the long term future focus and securing a very strong hit tool hitter (65grade) like Merrill was very important to me.
For the pitching matchup, they have thrown 219k vs my 244k so that still might get close... Their ratios are very bad with 3.80era and 1.17whip on season in comparison to my league leading 2.26era and 1.02whip, but of course that can fluctuate based on MLB team matchups. They have 7 starters (9 scheduled starts) and only 2 relievers so I have the slight edge on more saves with my 3 relievers. I only have 10 scheduled starts so it could get quite close in the wins and strikeouts battles!!! That will be a debate for me midweek/late-week if I add streaming pitching or higher AVG hitters. Some of you might wonder how I know these stats on my opponents, well make sure you check the TEAM STATS page (on yahoo) to gain this information on your opponents as it will give you an insight on their strengths and weaknesses. (Do be aware that moves they have made can fluctuate this slightly/drastically) It will help you in determining what categories you can attack each week or which ones to punt. I track this in a notepad document for each league that I am in and refer to it every night as I decide the moves I make or do not make. "Sometimes the best moves you make are actually the moves you DO NOT make." Same concept/phrase applies for trades.
In terms of the moves I have made already on MON and my future moves this week, well I'm also eyeing up my streams for later in the week too. Kodai Senga I felt was an absolute must add considering his return timetable could be only a few weeks out. His numbers last season were that of an Ace (2.98era, huge k rate, 12wins). Being able to add an Ace on the waiver wire is *chefs kiss*. He was dropped a few days earlier (by a diamond rated manager). I mention that because there is this thought out in the community that "my league never drops great players or ever makes easy trades", yet I continue to see across my leagues (and others that people mention) that managers are in fact dropping great players. I took note of that manager and added the relevant information into my nerdy little notepad document. "Team XYZ doesn't like injured players". Although in their defense, actually at the time they made the drop they had 5 players injured and only 4 IL spots. (Gerrit Cole, Senga, Fairbanks, Yelich, Josh Lowe). It's also possible Senga could have a setback so there is risk in that regard... I possibly could have went with a 2 start SP streamer like Luis Gil or Simeon Woods Richardson (looked amazing) (both were in strong consideration for me!). I almost went with Tyler Anderson, but glad I decided against that as he struggled MON. There is a debate on the value of Gavin Stone vs MIA tomorrow, but then I would miss out on the start of Crochet or Fedde if I were to drop them so it's "not ideal for maximum starts" type of thing... Civale vs CWS is also available but he struggled last time vs CWS and his last 3 starts have been terrible. Some interesting other options too.
I feel pretty good about my offense to be honest. Even though there is not be huge superstar names, they are still "useful" for what I want them to do. (As mentioned in last weeks update) Because of this I do think it is more likely my moves will be for pitching. I'm a tad worried Sal Frelick hit 7th on MON. I want him at leadoff. Oh! I want to mention that I tried trading for Tyler Black and the guy rejected trade, but then turns around the next day and dropped Tyler Black!!! (bit odd) So Mr. Black is absolutely on my radar to add! He has those contact, OBP, speed and hits top part of the lineup! SIGN ME UP!
Bit of strategy talk here regarding my team build. The goal of a punt power build is to win 2 offensive categories (Ideally 3 eventually, R, AVG, SB) and win 4-5 pitching categories. (If you are able to obtain closers you have upside to win 5 pitching cats, if you punt saves then your upside is 4 and you would be more consistently likely to win WINS and K categories) I technically currently have the upside to win all 5 pitching and 2 hitting categories. (If I gain runs value I would even have maximum upside of 8 categories! 5+3=8) Remember that in category leagues you ONLY NEED TO WIN 6 categories folks! This is the benefit of punting! (And technically in h2h playoffs you can have a tie 5-5 and still advance to next round due to season standings and matchup ranking!) I think punting gives you less variance than other builds? Or maybe this less variance is just from having high AVG contact hitters? Discuss? (Could be an ongoing discussion throughout the season)
There is an interesting topic to bring up regarding trading for hitters who fit the "punt power" type of team build. I think buying low on Kwan and Trea Turner now become viable possibilities for my team and other punt power teams that may exist out there! If you have any other names that could be buy low, I'm all ears. Remember to always keep an eye out for prospects coming up who have the skills that you want/need! Sometimes you can trade away your current assets that you have for upgrades at weak positions on your team and then fill those holes of the guys you traded away with prospects who are coming up soon or have already come up. (Or a hot waiver wire bat that will fill in temporarily) In this way you become a team with "less weaknesses" (Of course that advice can apply to all sorts of type of team builds in head to head category leagues). What this means for this Undraftables team is I may be able to flip my pitching assets for hitting upgrades that give the full trifecta of RUNS, AVG, SB. (Corbin Caroll firmly on my future radar) Maybe I should already be sending feelers, hmmm...
Overall, I'm quite happy with my team's performance and strategy, even though it's considered a tougher challenge. As mentioned my goal is to win by a score of 6-4 or tie 5-5, but eventually will have upside to win 7-3 or even 8-2. I'm willing to make adjustments for each week and consider player recommendations to achieve that goal. So far, this has gone better than I expected (whereas this was tougher in the NBA)! One of the bigger takeaways you can glean from this strategy is that there are numerous ways to win a category league. I have won with punt power strategy for 3-4 years now so for me it is "proven winner". (Notate that this punt power strategy has NOT been tested in Roto YET. I plan to test that next year. Is this the best way to "punt power"? No, remember this was an "extra challenge" that I set forth upon myself.) You really don't have to go "Undraftables" (hard mode) like I have! A big takeway is that having superstars (or stars) undeniably will help a build like this do even better (Ronald Acuna, Elly De La Cruz, Witt, Corbin Carroll, etc), but you don't necessarily "need" those superstars. Instead you just need to have the right build or combination of players and a focus on your matchups. (In fantasy and MLB) There are various "useful" players with skill sets that are still worthy. You don't always need "The best player" in everything. (At least NOT IN A CATEGORY LEAGUE) If you have suffered severe injuries to some power hitters (like Trout, Casas, Royce Lewis, Josh Jung) you could transition and/or trade into a "punt power build" to try it out? (Or that could be something you consider further down the road in the season too) If you need help on how to do it, I'm your guy!
I'll provide weekly updates on Monday mornings (Tuesday for this week) on the team's progress, so let me know if you'd like to follow along or have any suggestions! Thoughts on the team? If you want the previous updates on the team with "How I ended up here" and each week breakdown you can find them in a FB group or I can send them to you in a message. (I wasn't able to post early in season because I changed reddit profiles (hated my username) from last year which had bunches of karma!) (Can't post if you don't have enough karma) Additionally, I'm recruiting for next year, (although this is NOT the central goal of this post) where this unique drafting strategy will be the league's standard for each owner.

2024.05.06 16:26 BaasitAli92 Cricket, and experiencing it.

Now Mark and Tyler, i was under the impression that one of the purposes of the podcast was to broaden our horizons with respect to the vast world of sports, and while i admit there are simply too many sports for just the two of you to keep up with. HOWEVER; seeing that the T20 (shortest and most entertaining format of cricket) world cup is being CO HOSTED in the USA, and to hear little to no mention of this on the podcast of late is a tad disappointing. so i propose a task. while getting tickets to such a massive event will be borderline impossible at this point, i hereby request that you guys try to watch an a) Pakistan vs India or b) Australia vs England match during this event thats taking place throughout june , and relay your experience of the game on the podcast. Thank you, and uh, BooooOOOOoooOOOOOooo (spooky ghost noises)

2024.05.03 04:01 katanddog 2,000 Names (and their meanings) For Your Baby Boy found from a Vintage Mennen Company Booklet

My mom passed along this booklet that belonged to my grandmother when we were expecting. Figured I would share it here before discarding it. The Girl Name list is already posted 😊 Enjoy!
WHAT'S IN A NAME
Don't let the meanings concern you. Think instead of how the name will fit the child, when the child is grown, or known. Choose the name with care. It's very important to your baby-all through life. Here are some guides: - Say each name aloud, along with your own family name, to check rhythm and sound. - Use soft first names with sharp-sounding family names. - Use multi-syllable first names with short family names. - Avoid using a first name that ends with the same sound that starts the last name, such as "Jane Nevins." - Avoid "famous combinations" such as "Abraham" and "Lincoln." - Watch out for initials that spell out familiar letters, like “S. O. S”

2024.04.29 05:35 Sweeneytodd_ Transient Kid - (Hip Hop/OFGWKTA) (WIP)

An attempt at a rap style/soundscape similar to that of Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler's crew. Wanted a darker content theme representing my childhood but still with that catchy upbeat tone that these guys are known for. Captured it well, took 3 different iterations and over 200 generations to get here though and I'm still not 100% on it. I love the high mid section but the "AHHH FUCK" is just that tad bit too high toned. But way better than any other generations I managed to get.

2024.04.22 15:37 Elevation212 Top 11 draft with explanations + rest of Giants draft

1.1 Bears - Caleb Williams
1.2 Commies - Jayden Daniels
1.3 TRADE NYG sends 1.6, 2.47, 2024 2nd for Pats 1.3 - draft Drake Maye
Reasoning for Pats - they are in year one of a new coach/FO with the GM being “interim” based on draft results. Given the state of the pats roster they lean towards acquiring more assets and building out the roster but don’t want to move so far back they miss out on a blue chip receiver
1.4 Trade! Vikes send 1.11 & 1.23 to cards for 1.4 draft JJ McCarthy
Reasoning - the vikes are a qb away from being a contender and jj is a great peace to pair with the vikes o line and receivers, vikes start Darnold for 1/2 the season before handing the reins to jj
Cards are in asset collection mode; they have their qb but want to add plus pieces to defense and offense
1.5 Chargers MHJ, chargers would of loved to move back but with jj gone the market dries up, they decide to add possibly the best football player in the draft to offense to rehydrated a depleted receiving core
1.6 New England - Malik Nabers - pats decide to add the most electric playmaker in the draft to their offense giving them their first plus offensive weapon since Gronk left
1.7 Trade - Cards send 1.11 & 2.35 to Titans and draft Odunze, cards trade for their Larry fitz replacement, perfect pairing of predictable excellent receiver with a creative qb who will need someone who can make on the fly adjustments to catch off the run
Titans move down as they can get assets while still being in range for a premier tackle
1.8 Falcons Dallas Turner - they’ve needed an edge since 2016, he’s the best in the class
1.9 Bears - Brock Bowers - the bears miss out on the big 3 WR but settle with possibly the best pass catcher in the class, lean in on the concept of a passing weapon rather then a te to pair up with their new qb
1.10 Jets - Joe Alt - Jets need to protect the retirement home; alt is a day one starter with upside
1.11 Titans - Troy Fautanu, titans dropped a tad farther then alt did but settle for the most versatile lineman in the draft
Many picks later
3.70 - Giants - Tyler Nubin S - Tyler takes a small tumble due to position but is snagged as a immediate need for the giants and fits the age/RAS metrics schoen loves
4.107 - Giants - Mekhi Wingo DE- Wingo has a short-armed, squatty body type with an inconsistent anchor, but his first-step quickness and shock in his hands often gives him early advantages. He has NFL starting potential as a three-technique in a four-man front, projecting as a not-as-explosive version of Ed Oliver.
5.166 - Giants - Nathan Thomas T - Athletic upside and young Thomas has sloppy tendencies and needs to stay off the ground, but he is a smooth mover with strong mitts that help him batter and sustain (when they are well placed). His raw power might be accentuated best at guard in the NFL. - take o line every draft
6.183 - Giants - CB Dwight Mcglovern - McGlothern is an average athlete, and coaches won’t be using his technique for teaching tape. His route anticipation and play confidence, however, are the type of traits zone-scheme teams should target in the draft. He is an interesting mid-round prospect who reminds me of an underdeveloped version of Carlton Davis. - also take CB every draft…

2024.04.19 22:27 Naayji Mock draft with Commentary

Just typed in my mock because I refuse to do any work today. I am intrigued by the upcoming draft so let me know any specific draft intel, scheme fits, or substantiated rumors about your favorite teams!

TRADES:
I) TEN & MIN - MIN SENDS 11; 23 for 7
II) DEN & PHI - PHI SENDS 22; 50; 2025-5th for 12
III) MIA & ARI - ARI sends 27; 90 for 22

1) Bears - Caleb Wiliams
Congratulations Bears fans!! Caleb has taken the collegiate level by storm ever since usurping Spencer Rattler at Oklahoma and is deservedly going to go off the board first overall.

2) Commanders - Drake Maye
Josh Harris handed over the reins to Adam Peters who will look to build a sustained winner. While the roster has some talented pieces, I expect the Commanders to not rush this process and select the tad younger and more prototypical modern-day pocket passer out of UNC. I would not expect him to start to begin the season.

3) Patriots - Jayden Daniels
The Patriots won’t trade down out of this pick. Instead, they select their franchise quarterback going forward after Mac Jones flamed out. Jayden is a one-man offensive powerhouse that could turn the woeful Patriots offense around to pair up with their stud defense.

4) Arizona - Marvin Harrison Jr.
The most talented player in Arizona’s front seven I can think of off the top of my head is Kyzir White. Personally, I would be looking to trade down. However, with three quarterbacks off the board to begin the draft - Arizona gets to select its top choice non-qb.
Marvin Harrison is him.
I do not think a trade package of 11,23 suffices for Arizona to trade down. I believe DEN/NYG could offer more enticing packages than that. Unless MIN includes a 2025 1st-round pick (which I don’t think they will), I see Arizona staying put and selecting the best weapon in the draft.

5) Chargers - Brock Bowers
Harbaugh never traded down in the first round. The earliest he took an offensive lineman during his tenure in SF was a center in the third round. I also think its a bit easier to find guys that match your athletic criteria and teach them the power scheme than the more popular zone or gap schemes now prevalent in the league. Given they’ve got one of the best tackles in the league protecting Herbert’s blindside, I don’t expect them to go after a tackle in the first round.
Furthermore, they cut both their starting outside receiver after they refused pay cuts which leads to believe they like some of the premier receiving talent in the draft.
Harbaugh and OC Greg Roman will be looking to implement their West Coast/Power run hybrid offense in LA. In Baltimore, Roman used a lot of heavy sets with multiple backs and/or tight ends to enhance the run game and I don’t expect that to change.
I love the fit between player and coach culture-wise and I love the fit between player and scheme as well. I like Bowers more than Nabers and Odunze as a prospect in general. On top of that he suits the Harbaugh brand of football. Bower's work ethic is folklore at Georgia, he returned just 26 days after an ankle surgery to help beat an Ole Miss team with some momentum this last season, and everyone has nothing but heaps of praise for the kid. He has been a record-setter, two-time national champion as a lead weapon, and the next superstar weapon in the NFL.
I see him both as a player you can design your scheme around on top of acquiring a young culture setter for your franchise for decades to come. This quote by Gators HC Billy Nappier in 2023 sums up how I feel about Bowers rather well:
”Obviously, this is not only one of the best players in America this year, last year, I mean, this is one of the best players of all time, if that makes sense. {…} This guy is a really, really unique matchup relative to his ability to run routes and get open, his ability to run after the catch," Napier said. "They're handing the guy sweeps. They were handing the guy the ball. He's a terrific blocker. He's tough. He's got a really good set of fundamentals. Made him really hard to defend."
I want to reiterate that his value as a weapon on the field is why I have him going top 5. The culture fit is just the cherry on the top and what gives him, in my opinion, a chance to go top 5.

6) Giants - Malik Nabers
Daniel Jones is still the starter. At least that’s what Schoen told Drew Lock when he signed him in free agency. I could see the Giants picking a quarterback, but would be very surprised to see them trade up.
Waller might retire. Kadarius Toney didn’t work out. Giants need playmakers, and Nabers is a perfect fit as he will be taking DJ’s underthrown passes to the house.

7) MIN: JJMcCarthy
Intangibles through the roof supposedly; lots of impressive throws on third and long; arm talent and athletic profile desirable.
Should be fun throwing to JJ, Addison, and Hockenson.

8) ATL: Dallas Turner
Falcons would be hard-pressed to pass up on someone oozing as much talent and athletic ability as Dallas Turner. He has the vertical quickness on his get-off in addition to that superb bend that you wish for from your elite pass rushers. His traits paired with his athletic profile scream double-digit sack pro-bowl potential.
Schematically, you like the fit of having him play in two-stance as the outside linebacker for Raheem Morris. I could see the Falcons HC opting to pick up a cornerback like Terrion Arnold here as well; the new Falcons HC did make his money as a defensive backs coach and got the best out of Jalen Ramsey during his tenure with the Rams. I do think the BPA here will be a defensive player.

9) Bears - Joe Alt
Bears are looking for talent to help their defensive line, and I imagine they will be looking to trade down a couple of spots. It is rare that a team makes only 4 selections in a draft class but you can always trade down later in the draft. I do think the Bears will not want to trade down low into the twenties, and I am finding it difficult to imagine anybody trading up here.
Braxton Jones has done a decent job so far throughout his NFL tenure, however, you can definitely look to upgrade the blindside protector of your new franchise quarterback. If the board were to fall like this; and the Bears couldn’t find a trade-down partner, I would assume one of Fashanu or Alt would be the pick here over any available defensive linemen besides possibly Dallas Turner.

10) Jets - Rome Odunze
It is slim slim pickings currently behind GW17, and we won’t know how Mike Williams will look like coming back from yet another injury.
I could easily see the Jets taking Joe Alt, Fashanu, or J.C. Latham here, however, if one of the top pass catchers were to fall I would hope the Jets load up on some much-needed offensive firepower.
These are the twilight years of Aaron. Tyron and Moses are a good starting tackle tandem that most likely won’t play 18 regular season games. But all they have to manage is 4 straight from January to February. I think the Jets stand more to gain right now from a pass catcher than a tackle.

11) Titans -Olumuyiwa Fashanu
I understand that we fall in love with certain prospects during the draft process - Cardinals fans all want MHJ; Drake Maye seems to be the flavour of most here on Reddit as for QB2; Turner to ATL; Joe Alt to the Titans seems like a lock to most. I have him as my OT2 behind Fashanu. I was very high on Fashanu going into the year. after another impressive season at Penn State allowing zero sacks for a second consecutive season, I am not entirely convinced Joe Alt is the surefire better prospect like most seem to be.
Both are fantastic prospects in my eyes; and more 1A)/1B) to me. I think the Titans would take the extra frp to trade down to 11 as the range of players should still be extremely enticing to the Titans at that pick (thinking Alt/Fashanu/Bowers/Turner) along with picking up immediate high-value draft capital later in the draft

12) Eagles - Terrion Arnold
Arnold is my CB1, and I was happy to see Daniel Jeremiah place him as his highest-ranked defensive prospect on his big board. Terrion managed to find his way onto the field as a true freshman which is rare under daunted DB coach Nick Saban.
Arnold is the most well-rounded cornerback in this draft and has an incredibly high ceiling as a ballhawk, run-defender, and scheme-versatile cornerback who can spearhead the new Fangio defense in Philadelphia. I would be incredibly surprised if Slay and Bradberry are in future plans of Eagles GM Howie Roseman.
I will say this, The Eagles do not have a third-round pick and it would be a first for Howie to select let alone trade up for a cornerback in the first. I do think Terrion is the type of prospect you may do it for. I will say I think this is unlikely, but something gives me an inkling that it will happen.
I would commend anybody with time to spare to listen to the short segment on the Brett Kollmann podcast during which Daniel Jeremiah spoke about Terrion. I was super impressed by the stories, and it completely matched with how I felt watching him play.

13) Raiders - Quinyon Mitchell
Patrick Graham was one of the most impressive coordinators in the league this past season. His CB room needs an injection of talent. Their cornerbacks currently on the roster had a total of 3 interceptions in 2023. They will need more production from their cornerbacks in a division with Mahomes and Herbert.
Quinyon was PFF’s highest graded corner in college last year, and he has had a phenomenal draft process. Tested amazingly, dominated the Senior Bowl, and worked his way up the draft boards for a lot of people.
I wanted to mock the Raiders a tackle but I don’t like the Latham fit with Luke Getsy’s outside zone run scheme. I do not see Taliese Fuaga going top 15 so I went with a corner instead here for the Raiders.

14) Saints: J.C. Latham
Saints GM Mickey Loomis defended LT Trevor Penning mentioning missed training camps and battles with injuries as part of the former first-round pick’s shortcomings this past season. I do not think the team is willing to move on from him just yet, and Ryan Ramczyk restructured his contract which makes me believe he will play this year.
I always thought Latham looked exceptional when I watched Alabama play. Throughout this draft process, he has not risen like I thought he would. Charlie Campbell, one of the most successful mocker drafters and generally well-respected NFL insider, recently shared his big board for the upcoming draft and had J.C. Latham ranked as his best tackle and 7th best player overall in the draft although he has Joe Alt mocked above him.
Nonetheless, he noted that “some team sources shared they feel Latham is definitely worthy of being a top-10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft”. His versatility to slot in at guard, to then move over to RT post Ramczyk would be immensely valuable to the Saints.

15) Colts - Brian Thomas Jr.
Colts like their guys. I do too to be fair, and I especially like Anthony Richardson. The AFCS seems to be in somewhat of a weapons race stockpiling weapons for their young quarterbacks. The colts would be wise to do the same.
It’s not often that a prospect with an athletic profile that impressive combined with so much flashing talent in college drops to the middle of the first. I mean on paper we are talking about a guy who is 6’3, weighed in at 209 lbs, ran a 4.33 40-yard dash, and put up 68-1,177-17TD last season whilst leading the whole FBS in touchdowns. Watching the games, it looked electric and I think he would be a fantastic weapon to pair with Pittman and slot-receiver Downs.

16) Seahawks - Byron Murphy
One 6’1 DT leaves the NFCW - and another enters.
During Mike Macdonald’s tenure with the Ravens the defensive personnel decisions sort of zigged when the rest of the NFL zagged. Ravens went heavy on defensive tackles, linebackers, and safeties and I expect Macdonald to bring a somewhat similar philosophy to Seattle.
It all starts upfront, and Dre’Mont Jones as well as Jarran Reed are both likely gone after 2024. I could not imagine the Seahawks passing up on Byron Murphy. Personally see his floor to be drafted at 16.
Sidenote, I am excited to watch Witherspoon as I think the emerging superstar will shine under their new head coach.

17) Jaguars - Nate Wiggins
Trent Baalke did mention they were looking to add to the cornerback room, and their position in the first round should allow them to select one of the top guys this year. I have them selecting my CB2, and someone who might rival Sauce Gardner as having the coolest CB nickname currently in the NFL.
Antonio Johnson impressed in the nickel last year yet the Jaguars went out and signed Darnell Savage to start. Darious Williams was swapped out for Ronald Darby, and the 6th-round rookie Braswell held his own at times.
Ryan Nielsen wants to shift to an even front and play more man coverage in 2024 which explains some of their free agency moves. I do still think they need an outside corner, and I like the talent around the mid-first.
Clemson was man-heavy in 2023, their corners often on islands tasked with defending whatever assignment ahead of them one-on-one. Wiggins thrived in this scheme. His generational speed allowed him to be physical at a route’s stem knowing he has the speed to recover. Wiggins has the ability to match up with receivers at the line due to his technique often beating wide receivers to their spot and allowing zero separation. Whenever I watched it seemed like he just sticks to guys.
I think he is being underrated, and a guy with an even lighter frame, who was slower, and in my opinion a worse prospect coming out was Emmanuel Forbes who was drafted 16th overall last year.
Lance Zierlein wrote that “Wiggins' speed, scheme versatility and playmaking instincts should make him the most sought after cornerback in the draft”. I do think he will go top 20.

18) Bengals - Amarius Mims
Bengals remain in need of competition at both DT and OT after signing Sheldon Rankins and Trent Brown in free agency. I would imagine the Bengals try and shore up their offensive line in a tackle-strong class.
Mims is a large large man. Injuries in 2023 will hurt his draft stock but I think at the latest the Bengals or Steelers will stop his slide due to his sheer upside. It is rare to see a man of those dimensions move as he can. Some of his playoff 2022 tape is unreal.

19) Rams - Troy Fautanu
I am confident the Rams will draft a lineman. I think given the pool of talent it is more likely they go offense. Troy Fautanu falls to them at 19.
I really enjoyed watching the Huskies in 2023, and I was rooting for them to upset Michigan in the championship. I think their offensive line did a fantastic job in protecting an outstanding quarterback that is however rather limited mobility wise.
Fautanu would be a great fit in the 2023 Rams gap-run scheme they began implementing. Although I don’t know if Sean McVay will stick with it or continue to adjust his scheme. I do see Fautanu as a tackle despite being a little undersized. He has the arm length, technique, and athleticism you would want from a tackle.

20) Steelers - Taliese Fuaga
Tackles will be flying off the board in the first, and I expect the Steelers to join in on the frenzy due to a lack of starter talent at C and RT. Broderick Jones will be moving back to LT according to Pittsburgh GM Omar Khan.
I simply do not see it with Fuaga, and he was not at all on my radar. I have him as a top 25-ish prospect but I think anywhere in the top 15 is too high. I do like the fit with Arthur Smith and Fuaga’s versatility along the line would be immensely valuable to the Steelers.

21) Cardinals - Jared Verse
ARI has a lot of draft capital, and if they like a guy can afford it to move up a couple of spots. I think there’s a good chance they trade up using one of their three third-round picks.
The Cardinals need to start building their trenches on the defensive side of the ball. I like Verse over Robinson in Jonathan Gannon’s scheme.
Verse is arguably the most plug-and-play EDGE in the draft, and has a developed bag of pass-rushing moves. I think if he had some more length, he would go higher. Took over games for the Seminoles in 2023, was a noticeable problem for offensive lines.

22) Broncos - Chop Robinson
Denver I fail to see trade up with their lacking draft capital, and for identical reasons, a lot of people think they will attempt to trade down. I think they are an enticing spot for a capital-rich team like GB, ARI, or PHI to move up here.
Defensive linemen are flying off the board after the offensive linemen talent pool was drained. The Broncos are another team with a woeful pass rush in 2023, and I think the vertical speed Chop has off the line is exactly what their pass rusher room needs.
I would like to see Penix Jr. under Sean Payton yet I don’t view him as a first-rounder. His limited mobility and past medical history worry me too much to select him in the first round. Specifically for Denver, I think the roster has needs across the board and Paton and Payton should be looking to add as much talent as possible.

23) Titans - Laiatu Latu
The run on pass rushers continues as the Titans select their much-needed premium EDGE. I am a big big fan of Dennard Wilson, and I have high hopes for the Titans' defense in 2024.
Laiatu Latu was medically retired from collegiate football before UCLA doctors cleared him to play in 2023. Latu would go on to record the highest ever single-season grade handed out to any collegiate player by PFF. I could see him falling behind the other three top talents at EDGE due to concerns about his medical history

24) Cowboys - Tyler Guyton
I think the Cowboys have done well this off-season, as I think they will get both CD and Parson’s extensions done whilst leaving themselves flexible at QB heading into 2024. I think Dak Prescott may have to show out or get shown the door next season.
I am not entirely convinced that moving your all-pro LG to LT is the smartest move. I think the Cowboys should keep their league-best Guard tandem intact.
Tyler Guyton has risen throughout this draft process, and it is now almost unthinkable that he drops out of the first.

25) Packers - Cooper DeJean.
New DC Jeff Hafley discussed the post and box safety positions in his defense, and GM Gutekunst mentioned at the Combine that he wants safeties capable of playing both roles as well as the slot corner position. Cooper DeJean fits exactly that mold and checks off the high RAS threshold the Packers seem to have.
Cooper DeJean could take this defense to another level. His versatility to swap around with McKinney from strong to free safety, to start at nickel instead of Keisean Nixon, to cover outside if Stokes and/or Jaire were to miss time again should be incredibly valuable to the Packers.
I could see the Packers trading up due to their high amount of draft capital.

26) Buccaneers - Jackson Power-Johnson
As a Baker believer, I think Tampa has had a fantastic offseason. Their roster is good enough to be competitive in the NFCS.
Their center play has been appalling since Ryan Jensen retired. It has become popular to mock them JPJ, and the way the board has fallen in this mock I would tend to agree.
Also, if you want to go based off of anything coordinators say during the off-season, I would advise everyone to draft Godwin in your fantasy leagues.

27) Dolphins - Jer’Zahn Newton
The Dolphins currently hold six picks, four of which are in the backend 100. I see them as a highly likely trade-down scenario unless someone like Byron Murphy or an offensive lineman they like were to fall to them.
I was in between Kris Jenkins and Jer’Zahn Newton here for the Dolphins. I do expect them to grab a defensive tackle early in the draft after the departure of Christian Wilkins.
I ultimately gave Jer’Zahn Newton the notch simply because he jumped off the screen more to me during the season. Illinois best player, and a real game wrecker that just never came off the field.

28) Bills - Xavier Worthy
Worthy broke out as an 18-year-old true freshman in the SEC putting up 62/981/12 as a true freshman. He broke his hand his second year and his play suffered culminating in a horror bowl game in which he had three crucial drops. Xavier returned to Texas for another year, and with his hand healed up, improved massively on the drop issues from the year prior.
This kid has generational truly game-breaking speed. Not just straight linear speed, he is football fast. And it shows immediately on the field, that he isn’t just a speedster this kid is running polished routes and has worked immensely to improve his release of the line of scrimmage over three years. I don’t just see him as returneZ-stretch speedster; I think in time this guy can develop into a premier weapon in the NFL.
Xavier is one of my favourite prospects in this draft. I think he is incredibly underrated as a prospect, I cannot see him dropping out of the first, and in my opinion he should be drafted ahead of fellow Longhorn Adonai Mitchell.

29) Lions - Darius Robinson
Robinson has gotten some acclaim for first-round status which was backed up by an invitation to attend the draft in Detroit. He may become this year’s Keion White/Will Levis.
Recently, I have seen a lot of guys discussing the Missouri standout defensive linemen as a potential target for the Lions. The more I’ve looked into Robinson the more I understand the rationale behind it. He is a perfect culture fit, relentless motor, and could help in all positions across the line. I will gladly jump on the bandwagon here.

30) Ravens - Kool-Aid McKinstry
At this point in any mock you’re matching needs and talent left on your board; my highest graded player here would be Kool-Aid
Him and Nate Wiggins are my two favourite pure cover corners in this draft; both have similar weaknesses in their tackling and so I give a slight edge to Wiggins due to his elite speed.
Still, Kool-Aid also managed to find the field his freshman season under Nick Saban. This kid used to be touted as a future top-ten pick, and I think we may have all suffered from prospect fatigue because he put together a strong season in 2023.

31) Niners - Graham Barton
Barton likely goes in the first round so I’ll throw my dart on a team that needs fresh legs on their offensive line. The Niners are bringing back their entire starting from last season after they re-signed Feliciano. He has hinted at retiring so the Niners will likely be on the lookout for his replacement.
Depending on how the Aiyuk think plays out, the Niners could select a Ricky Pearsall, Ladd McKonkey, or Adonai Mitchell if the board were to fall like this.

32) Chiefs - Adonai Mitchell
I would assume the best player available at the end of the first will be a wide receiver. I also think the Chiefs have a huge need their even after signing Hollywood Brown (and with conviction that Rice will see the field).
Adonai Mitchell probably deserves to go in the first based on his test numbers and production alone. He and Worthy created some fun highlights to watch. I’ll sneak him in at the end.

2024.04.17 14:03 KrizzyPeezy One thing I noticed...

It makes it much harder to sing when trying to sound like another artists timbre than your own... especially if their voice timbre is lighter than yours. Also same goes if you're trying to sing a song JUST LIKE the artist who has a deeper, darker timbre than you.
One way to teach your brain to look out for this is listening to groups. For example: Take 6, Nsync, Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block, kpop groups, well anything with more than one singer basically. Everyone in the group has their own unique quality.
I'll give you an example;
In Backstreet Boys you can hear everyone has their distinct timbre when they sing their individual parts. When they switch parts with another member or sing a different song you're used to, e.g. AJ of BSB singing NSYNC songs, you'll be like "ohhh" or Joey Fatone from Nsync singing the lead part in NSYNC songs you'll be like "Oh so that's how he sounds." That'll teach you to break out of the habit and learn to develop your own style to stick to consistently jumping to different songs.
If you are so used to listening to only one individual artist and learned singing by singing their songs and imitation, it feels like you're really limiting the potential you can do with your own voice. People who only listen to one particular indie artist you might notice this phenomenon, "cursive singing" they will have a habit of doing the same vocal mannerisms and apply it to everything - making it harder to sing some songs more than others!
I used to try to sound like the original artists voice timbre and realized my voice is a tad deeper in timbre than theres for some, while other artists I realized mine is a tad lighter than theirs... which is why sometimes it doesn't sound 'right' exactly.
Usually when trying to make the voice lighter like a 2000s rnb singer particularly like Wanya of Boyz II Men, it sounds all mumbly (e.g. Savage Garden - I knew I loved you). I noticed that it feels much easier to sing when not being mumbly and quiet and more like myself when singing other songs of artists with slightly darker timbres and a tad louder. Anything that keeps the voice out of feeling like the sound is stuck behind my throat and out of my nose (when pinching it), as I noticed when singing higher like an rnb singer that has a lighter voice than I do - it usually makes it feel harder to sing since I automatically make it nasally and mumbly to make my voice match theirs (e.g Can we Talk by Tevin Campbell.
Then I realized if I dug deeper earlier, there are other artists out there in the rnb world with a deeper, darker timbre... well it's easier to find those singers in Rock or Gospel music. I realized some songs are easier to sing than others because the singers vocal habits feel more "comfortable" and sound better for my voice than others.
Feels like different songs yield different results and that copying the tone of an artist sometimes leads to more difficulties than it should be. Therefore, I learned copying a way a singer sings can help suggest what you could do but it shouldn't be what you should do all the time. Be aware of what's doable for you.
Sometimes I gotta just NOT listen to the song while practicing and just read the lyrics only or play the notes on a piano or have some sort of reference to pitch so I get to do whats most comfortable and sounds best for me, only problem is I don't do this enough... usually yields the best results.
Sometimes a singer might be approaching a song in a more "pushed" quality kinda like the same way as using your voice when having an argument, rapping, yelling at a parent (hopefully you don't really do that), being really excited at a sports game. And in contrary, sometimes a singer might be approaching a note in a "flow phonation" as Tyler Wysong of youtube talks about - feels much more tamed compared to the "pushed quality." A singer I'll give an example of "flow" would be like Jc chasez of Nsync and Brian Littrel of BSB at his prime vs pushed which would be AJ or Nick Carter of BSB. The pushed one for me feels more range limiting * ... and when it starts or BEFORE it starts to feel limiting, that's when you can probably merge to the other one "flow" aka what some call "mixed". I guess pushed could be synonymous for chest belting and the other one "flow" could be synonymous for heady mix (kinda like crying feeling to engage more "chestiness" to the sound).
What some people don't realize, they probably only default to a lighter timbre going higher and force too much air into the sound (e.g. when a grown man tries to imitate a woman), which is why they have all sorts of problems. You can go slightly darker in color and maybe that'll fix your problems and open up to new vocal qualities you didn't know you had!
Use the least air possible when you make any sound. To realize why right away, try whistling with your lips. If you blow too much air out then no sound comes out and it's out of control. When you start to be able to control pitch on a (lip) whistle (NOT THE DOLPHIN MARIAH CAREY WHISTLE WITH THE VOCAL CORDS), then you will understand how your voice should probably work.
Another problem I see and realized with myself throughout the years is this: the idea of shedding vocal weight. If you read articles about singing or youtube to learn how to sing you mightve come across this idea of: "light is right." Most of the time you don't really need to focus on this especially if you aren't a LOUD person to begin with. You're probably already TOOO LIGHT, which results in a mumbling voice which adds too much tightness to your singing. Probably you need to do the opposite actually. Haha. I learned the most by being louder than I usually am, having fun, just letting it all out without giving a damn if it sounds good! That really opens my voice up a lot! Then focus on tackling comfort, pitch accuracy, timing, etc. ... all that good stuff. And to be honest, doing the opposite of "light is right" because Ive been light all my life already (very shy and introverted people barely hear me!) it has helped me open my mouth more!
Usually "untrained" singers default to the pushed one and don't know how to do the other one. So maybe one of those feelings feels more "natural" or "comfortable" for you at the start. It feels like you need to be aware of these two contrasting feelings in order to sing almost anything you want-- but at the same time be able to keep everything in a consistent TIMBRE - what people would identify as YOU. Everythings gotta compliment each other. Like you can hear the voice and you're like "that's Michael Jackson!" And an example of a uniform of consistent timbre low to high would be Chris Stapleton.
If your voice timbre sounds like Barry White or Tom Jones without even trying to - embrace that. It would probably be difficult trying to maintain a tone of someone with a lighter voice timbre like Mitch Grassi of Pentatonix. You'll have to make adjustments to how you approach the notes going higher especially so it would match what you're doing lower... so in a way if you ALREADY sound like Tom Jones lower in range comfortably, you kinda need to approach your higher notes the same or similar way as he would so it would sound good. That timbre, vocal tone.
I never had voice lessons I'm just sharing what I learned throughout the years. I've been exposed to singing since I was a kid but still have lots to learn.

.
Finishing up our first month of positional draft rankings, we close the chapter on trench warriors with the interior D-line. This group includes all players on the defensive side of the ball lining up anywhere from a zero- to a four-/five-technique depending on your labelling, although it’s rare to find such a clearly defined alignment roles these days. Just for clarification on how I will reference them:
0 = head-up on the center, 1 or shade = shoulder of the center, 2i = inside shoulder of the guard, 2 = head-up on the guard, 3 = outside shoulder of the guard, 4i = inside shoulder of the tackle, 4/5 = head-up on the tackle
This is a group that includes two incredible prospects worthy of top-20 selections and between five and seven other names that should go on day two. You can find useful players after that, but there is certainly a drop-off and you’re looking at role players or unrefined projects.
Let’s get into the list now:

.

1. Jer’Zhan Newton, Illinois

6’2”, 285 pounds; RS JR
.
Just outside the top-1000 overall recruits of 2020, Jer’Zhan “Johnny” Newton enrolled in 2020 and saw some action as a backup year one, but entered the starting lineup as a sophomore. Last season he racked up 61 tackles, 14 of those for loss, 5.5 sacks, three passes batted down and two fumbles recovered, which earned him first-team All-Big Ten and second-team All-American accolades. This past season he improved to first-team All-American and was named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year, despite to his numbers slightly dropping off (52 tackles, 8.5 for loss, sacks, two PBUs, a fumble forced and recovered each.
.
~Run defense:~
  • Improved massively from his freshman season (611 snaps) to year two, going from a 57.7 PFF grade to 91.0, which ranked behind only Jalen Carter and Calijah Kancey in 2022 and made him the most valuable Power Five interior defensive lineman according to PFF’s “wins above average” metric
  • This guy’s a bowling ball of butcher knives, who constantly seems to be disrupting plays as a presence in the offensive backfield
  • Super effective at slicing through lanes in the zone run game to shut down the front-side
  • You see like one stupid back-door play on a guard that has the running back cut all the way back every week it seems like
  • When he can’t get to the play-side shoulder of linemen chasing the ball from behind, Newton makes sure to apply force under their arm pit and ride them down the line, whilst staying ready for the ball-carrier on potential cut-backs
  • Has some snaps where he recognizes he’s being pinned down and the guy across from him pulls out to the corner, yet Newton is able to go over the top in order to funnel the ball-carrier back inside
  • Has the power and knack for pulling blockers off himself and show up in the gap when the ball arrives there
  • Finished just one run stop short of the top mark (30) among Power Five interior D-linemen in 2022 and then four short of it (25) this past season
.
~Pass-rush:~
  • If he can just get up the field as a three-technique, his ability to burst through the gap and angle towards the quarterback in designated passing situations made him nearly impossible for college guards to handle – had two big sacks against Wisconsin that way in 2023 (one taken off by penalty)
  • Packs a quick two-handed downward-swipe directly into the rip-through in order to get past the hip of the blocker, often paired with a little stutter to beat guards cleanly off the line
  • Showcases a fluid club-swim combo to step past the hip of guards and corner his rush towards the passer, even as he has to drive through contact with blockers being able to recover
  • Recognizes when guards overset on him and has the lateral quicks to cross-face them in a hurry
  • Is constantly looking for secondary wins and how to impact pass plays, by batting down passes or cutting off angles for the quarterback
  • Pulls linemen aside like they’re nothing a few times per game as he recognizes the offense is running play-action or someone’s just leaning into him
  • The ability to stick his foot in the ground curve around as the looper on games up front is pretty scary for a guy of approximately 300 pounds
  • Flashes some eye-opening chase speed when he pursues quarterback out to the sideline
  • His 102 total QB pressures over the past two seasons are ten more than any other interior D-linemen across that stretch

~Weaknesses:~
  • On the shorter end of NFL interior defensive linemen, with his 76-inch wingspan putting him in the sixth percentile, giving him less room for error
  • Would benefit from striking with his hands to take control of the line of scrimmage early on against down-blocks before really tracking the backfield action
  • At times appears to be oblivious to angular blockers and allow himself to get washed down the line
  • Has room to become more precise and effective with chopping/swatting down the near-hand of pass-protectors, as well as being more pro-active with his counters
.
If Penn State left tackle Olu Fashanu is the most overthought prospect in this draft, Newton is kind of the forgotten man, yet I have both as my top names for their respective positions at a time where it seems other guys have surpassed those two on consensus rankings. Calijah Kancey was a top-20 pick for the Buccaneers last year and while Newton isn’t quite explosive off the ball, I think he’s a better all-around player. Now, he does also come in with some length concerns and if he’s asked to stack-and-shed blockers more regularly for his future team, he’ll need to become better with reacting to pressure points and setting the tone on contact with his hands. However, I would love how he projects into a traditional three-technique role for an even front team, I think he gives you alignment versatility – particularly in defined dropback situations – and what separates from a lot of these disruption-style players we see at the position is that if he connects with his hand combats, he links those with his hips in order to actually step through and create a path towards the ball for himself. To me, Johnny is a top-15 player in this draft.

.

2. Byron Murphy II, Texas

6’1”, 300 pounds; JR
.
One of the top-500 overall recruits in 2021, due to the crazy depth of the Texas D-line, Murphy started only two of 25 games played over his first two years with the Longhorns, recording 41 total tackles, 6.5 of those for loss and three sacks. This past season he cracked the lineup and made first-team All-Big 12 as well as second-team All-American, thanks to putting up career-highs across the board (29 tackles, 8.5 for loss and five sacks). The Big-12 also got a little sneaky, when they named Murphy the conference’s Defensive Lineman of the Year, even though his teammate T’Vondre Sweat received the DPOY award.
.
~Run defense:~
  • Stout run-defender, who plays uncommonly low and regularly demands both offensive linemen on combos to stay firm on him, which allows the linebacker to work around freely
  • Capable of lining up at the nose and anchoring against the angular element of combo-blocks
  • Has an uncanny feel for where pressure is being applied and how counter it – There are snaps where he doesn’t move one inch while his knee towards the second man is hovering barely over the ground
  • Showcases highly impressive lateral agility to counter zone concepts, where he doesn’t only maintain leverage on the gap, but actually gets his hands onto the next lineman who may try to provide a help-hand on the front-side
  • The short-area quicks to back-door blockers or execute run stunts pops a couple of times in every game
  • Asking a center to down-block on him when pulling a guard across the formation is pretty much off the table, because he sticks to the hip of that guy and often ends up bumping him into the ball-carrier in the offensive backfield
  • Murphy’s sudden hands regularly cause issues, as he side-steps linemen and steps past their hip, initiating first contact with ball-carriers at the line of scrimmage that way regularly
  • His 83.9 run-defense grade in 2022 was a top-ten mark among Power Five interior defensive linemen and he actually had three extra stops (21) on the same amount of such snaps basically
.
~Pass-rush:~
  • His height gives Murphy a natural leverage advantage already, but paired with his explosion off the ball and his ability to keep his upper body parallel to the ground basically makes him almost impossible to slow down when he just attacks up the field
  • Packs a violent club-rip move, including cross-face maneuvers, and fights hard through the reach of interior pass-protectors
  • Recognizes when linemen lean too far into him, rapidly yanking them forward and pulling his arm over to get by them
  • Has the flexibility and strength in his ankles to corner his rushes working on the outside shoulder of guards or tackles
  • When the O-line slides his direction or a tackle sets out to him rushing off the edge and Murphy attacks the other way, the guy responsible for him typically has to get into catch-up mode and try to take him enough off track, with the force he blows by them with initially
  • Capable of drawing multiple bodies with him as he slants across gaps and attempts to open up a lane for one of his teammates to loop over the top of
  • Murphy’s ability to suddenly disengage from blocks and then chase down scrambling quarterbacks really stands out
  • His 14.8% pass-rush win rate in 2022 put him just outside the top-ten of the interior D-line group and while he “only” had five sacks last season, PFF had him with the highest pass-rush productivity (9.6) among the position (with at least 100 rush snaps)
  • You see him turn his head and chase down screen passes 10+ yards down the field on multiple occasions
.
~Weaknesses:~
  • Will get a little undisciplined with his run fits and attack too far upfield or across blockers, to open up bigger lanes than they should otherwise be
  • There’s room for improvement with how quickly he transitions from run-defense to disengaging from blocks and rushing the passer
  • You love the ability to torpedo up a gap in passing situations, but you do see him end up on the turf quite regularly and blockers be able to push him down because of it
  • Needs to start incorporating counter moves when he wins off the line but then doesn’t punish blockers as they try to recover and get loose with their footwork
.
Murphy offers a rare blend of leverage, explosiveness, quicks and strength. He can pretty much fit in any type of front and become a difference-maker with the versatility to move around throughout games. Having said that, because the Longhorn coaches took advantage of that diverse skill-set, he has some development to do in order to realize his potential one day. Being able to recognize plays before he’s charged into opponents, playing under a little more control and countering the techniques of blockers are all necessary if he wants to be a legit “play-maker” instead of just a disruptor. Yet, you’re not going to find many guys who can penetrate as a three-technique or anchor against double-teams as a nose-tackle, before either side-stepping or going straight through a 330-pound guard on thirds pretty much equally well. And then he backed up that up with elite testing and a tremendous positional workout at the combine. You may not want to put too much on his plate right away, but Murphy has the potential to end up being the best defensive player from this entire draft. He should go off the board at some point in the teens.
.
.

.

3. Kris Jenkins Jr., Michigan

6’3”, 275 pounds; SR
.
A three-star recruit in 2020, the son of Jets All-Pro defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, Junior appeared in just one game as a true freshman. He played in all 14 and started four games the following season, recording 22 tackles but zero sacks. In year three, his numbers jumped up to 54 total stops, 3.5 of those for loss and two sacks. While his overall tackles were down a little bit this past season (37), he did slightly better his TFLs (4.5) and sacks (2.5), while snatching his first interception and scooping up a fumble, which he was recognized as a second-team All-Big choice for.
.
~Run defense:~
  • Comes out of his stance low and ready to strike with his hands against the run – Regularly you see guards take a couple of small steps backwards as contact is initiated
  • When allowed to shoot his gap, he’s quick off the ball and ready to take control of plays instead of allowing blockers to dictate terms to him, shutting off the front-side frequently as a 3/4i
  • Regularly is able to stay square against lateral run concepts and then fall back by one gap to hold up the running back
  • Against double-teams, he packs a potent corkscrew technique to squeeze through the squeeze between the two linemen
  • Highly active to work off blocks with a potent arm-over and track down the ball-carrier rather than getting hung up in traffic
  • You better not give this guy an opening as a linemen has to get in front of him after bucket-stepping, with no initial bump by anybody, as well as make sure he’s secured before somebody peels off combos, because he’ll otherwise chase down the ball
  • Actively closes the distance to pullers when initially unblocked and is able to create traffic in the backfield to throw off the timing of plays
  • Routinely squeezes bodies into the action and puts some centers on the turf trying to down-block on him
  • As a junior, Jenkins’ 31 run-defense stops were tied for the most in the nation among interior defensive linemen (in 2022) and almost one third of his run-defense snaps were categorized as “positive” in PFF’s database, which you get a “neutral” when you just “do your job”, meaningful he was highly impactful at that
.
~Pass-rush:~
  • Packs some legit bend for an interior rusher
  • You see Jenkins dip and rip in order to create an angle towards the quarterback – particularly off play-action – quite regularly
  • Capable of cross-facing blockers with great suddenness, especially once his hand-swipes continue to improve to actually win cleanly
  • We didn’t see Jenkins just sell out for bull-rushing solo blockers, but his power was on display a few times when he drove back double-teams to squeeze down the pocket
  • Really worked on his spin move in 2023, selling that he’ll attack the outside shoulder and then getting to the opposite hip in one fluid motion just as guards lean into him
  • Michigan put Jenkins over tackles more often this past season, where he showed the ability to condense the edge by riding tackles into the quarterback with the long-arm or bull-rush
  • Looks dynamic sticking his foot in the ground and looping across multiple games, being able to corner his path towards the QB
  • The type of style Michigan asked Jenkins to play didn’t lend itself to great production as a pass-rusher, yet he matched his pressure number from 2022 (20) on 75 fewer opportunities (228 pass-rush snaps) last season
.
~Weaknesses:~
  • Even for a read-and-react Wolverine front, Jenkins appears a tad late off the ball and puts himself in compromised positions at times because of it
  • Could do a little better job of mirroring the first step(s) of offensive linemen and not allowing himself to get sealed off or scooped on the backside of wide zone plays
  • Wastes too much time with tight-end when lined up at 5-/6-technique, instead of quickly shedding them to make plays
  • Doesn’t have a much of a pass-rush portfolio at this point, largely relying on power and not packing any reliable counters he’ll access
  • Needs to do a better job of when he does have vertical momentum to keep working through one half of the man and shorten the path towards the quarterback for himself
.
This draft is filled with sons of former NFL standout player, but somehow Jenkins Jr. is the one I barely hear being talked about. A big part of that is how he was asked to play by the Wolverine coaches, where he regularly is in a more conservative four-point stance on early downs and doesn’t just get off the ball on purpose, although even for that, I thought he didn’t help himself with that and it affected him even on passing downs to some degree. With that being said, that doesn’t mean he can’t be a more disruptive player if coached that way, considering we did see that quickness he clearly has show up more in 2022. I mean, he was number six on Bruce Feldman’s 2023 Freaks List, because his shuttle and three-cone times at Michigan were up there with any D-tackle coming into the league these past couple of years and only Cowboys first-round pick Mazi Smith (at a good 30 pounds extra), put up a higher mark than Jenkins’ 760 pounds on the combo twist – which tests an athlete’s ability to apply force. Jenkins certainly needs to improve his ability to attack half the man and become a more well-versed pass-rusher, but I think he could be a borderline elite run-stopper by his second season and has the potential to be a legit impact player on third downs, particularly on different games up front.

.

4. T'Vondre Sweat, Texas

6’4”, 340 pounds; RS SR
.
A top-1000 overall recruit in 2019, Sweat saw limited action as a true freshman with the Longhorns, before becoming a key cog of the rotation up front year two onwards. Across the next three seasons, he combined for 74 total stops, 8.5 of those for loss and two sacks, along with eight PBUs. He openly spoke about his increased investment this past season, which led to career highs across the board (45 total tackles, eight for loss, two sacks and four PBUs), the Big-12 Defensive Player of the Year award and first-team All-American recognition.
.
~Run defense:~
  • This dude is a monster truck, who regularly is first to land his hands onto opponents in the run game
  • Has the sturdy frame to not get bumped off his landmarks on down-blocks and giving him a chance to take a couple of steps up the field as the offense pulls someone denies the running back to stay on a tighter track initially
  • You see some trap plays, where the puller is really loading up for contact, yet it’s nothing better than a stalemate with Sweat
  • Has plenty of plays, where he’s dealing with down-blocks, rips through and circles around those guys in order to get involved with wrapping up the ball-carrier going through the opposite gap
  • There are some impressive reps back-dooring centers on zone plays with a quick arm-over and standing there as the back tries to squeeze past or bounce runs
  • When he sticks his foot in the ground and pursues the ball down the line, the speed for a man his size to chase down plays is pretty darn impressive
  • Re-set the line of scrimmage on the vast majority of snaps in the 2023 Red River Rivalry – Oklahoma’s QB Dillon Gabriel was the only guy to find success rushing
  • Only UCLA edge defender Laiatu Latu earned a higher overall PFF grade last season (91.7) and Sweat had the highest run-defense grade among all Power-5 defenders (92.0)
.
~Pass-rush:~
  • Routinely is able to create that initial momentum and push up the middle of the pocket
  • Packs a rapid two-handed downward swipe against interior pass-protectors trying to quick-set him, making them fold over and going right by them at times
  • It’s a constant battle for guards and centers trying to re-fit their hands and find ways to set their base in order to keep him occupied when soloed up against Sweat, who swipes those paws off and eventually pulls them aside
  • Capable of creating angles towards the quarterback even after allowing blockers to square him up, by lifting their arms upwards and ripping underneath them
  • Once he gets to one shoulder of pass-protectors, at best they can take him off track enough to allow the QB to step up usually
  • Provides the force to cave in one side of the protection and open up a lane for a looper to get through on games
  • Finished tied for eight among interior D-linemen in the draft with 31 total pressures – on less than 300 pass-rush snaps – and added 21 “other pass-rush wins” according to PFF
  • Consistently gets those big arms up as he’s closing in on quarterbacks (outside the pocket) in order to force them to put extra arc on passes
.
~Weaknesses:~
  • Due to his height and center of gravity, Sweat quickly pops up out of his stance and if asked to play extensive snaps, that only gets worse (conditioning will remain a question)
  • Angular blockers (on quick combos), who understand how to appropriately apply force to his hip or arm-pit, can get his body turned in the run game after being square in how he’s engaged with somebody else
  • Frequently is late to redirect or get into pursuit mode, when the play is going away from him
  • Doesn’t give you a whole lot of versatility as a pass-rusher, where he can take advantage of being singled up at times, but he’s not stringing moves together and slips through a crack between blockers, to flush the quarterback
  • At this point doesn’t utilize his length and power optimally to truly overwhelm solo-blockers with the bull-rush
.
Nobody in college football was as physically dominant at the line of scrimmage as T’Vondre Sweat last season. His ability to swallow double-teams but also become more of a play-maker in the run game when soloed up made Texas one of the toughest defenses to run the ball against (averaging a miniscule 2.9 yards per carry). You’d like him to play a little lower still – especially watching teammate Byron Murphy fire off the ball next to him – and he’s not going to give you a whole lot in the pass-rush department as long as he doesn’t master his power-approach and the ways he can work off it. With that being said, if you understand what he is, this guy can change how your defense operates, because he consistently demands and extra pair of hands and allows your linebackers to roam freely, while having the ability to put interior pass-protectors on skates occasionally. For a mountain of a man like this, conditioning and how much he can play will always be a question, but he did earn his highest PFF grade (91.7) while playing a career-high 503 snaps last season. If Mazi Smith can go at the end of the first round last year, Sweat deserves to be a late second-rounder.

.

5. Braden Fiske, Florida State

6’5”, 305 pounds; RS SR
.
A three-star recruit for Western Michigan in 2018, Fiske was on the field for just 18 snaps as a true freshman, before appearing in 12 games as a rotational player the following season, recording 24 tackles, two TFLs and a sack. He started all six contests during the 2020 COVID-shortened campaign, putting up the same tackle number, but about double the negative plays created respectively. Starting all 25 contests the following two years, he racked up 101 tackles, 20 of those for loss and ten sacks, along with three passes batted down, two fumbles forced and one recovered – all this past year. He decided to prove his talents in the Power Five for 2023 with the Seminoles and backed it up with a second-team All-ACC campaign, thanks to 43 total stops, nine TFLs and six sacks.
.
~Run defense:~
  • True worker-bee on the defensive interior, who’s a pest for any team facing him
  • When offensive linemen block down on Fiske or seal him on the backside, it regularly looks like they’re just trying to hold up in pass-protection rather than bringing the fight to him
  • Pro-actively encounters double-teams and is able to hold pretty firm ground
  • There are some plays where it truly looks like the offense is running into a wall, as there’s no movement at the point of attack against Fiske and then the back comes to a dead-stop as he collides with the D-tackle at the line of scrimmage
  • Consistently plays the game with a great motor and is looking to work off blocks
  • You frequently see him get involved on tackles ten yards past the line of scrimmage, but also if he misses initially, pop straight back up and join the party
  • Logged at least 26 defensive stops each of the past three seasons, speaking to his level of activity
  • Him and teammate Jared Verse were amongst boys in the ACC Championship game vs. Louisville, whether Fiske was man-handling the interior O-line with power or penetrated the backfield for negative plays, including a TFL on the very first snap from scrimmage
.
~Pass-rush:~
  • Fiske’s get-off is up there with basically anybody among this interior D-linemen class to immediately stress the shoulder of pass-protectors
  • Has some awesome reps of guards setting out to him rushing from the three-technique and beating them across the face with a shockingly rapid arm-over move, where he basically slaps that guy’s butt as he steps through
  • Really works those hands and you see him break free even when four hands touch him with protection being slid his way
  • If his initial rush stalls, Fiske will just work into the depth of the pocket and get his hands up to challenge passing lanes for the quarterback
  • Constantly is looking to disengage or spin away from blockers late, in order to chase after the quarterback
  • When he’s asked to spike into linemen or almost bowl over guys as he slants across multiple gaps trying to create a free lane for one of his teammates, he will do so with great determination and force
  • Yet his burst and ability to turn a tight corner on delayed loops is also massive, particularly being able to shut down quarterbacks trying to escape the pocket
  • Over his final two seasons with WMU, Fiske’s 81 pressures were tied for fifth among FBS interior defensive linemen, before adding 28 more on 263 pass-rush snaps in one year with SMU
  • Impressive with how he diagnoses screens to the back and is able to force quarterbacks to dirt the ball
.
~Weaknesses:~
  • Sort of a tweener, playing too upright for what you’d like to see from a three-technique but doesn’t project well as somebody playing over the center and dealing with doubles frequently
  • Comes in with an inherent length disadvantage at only 31-inch arms and it limits his ability to really threaten the edges of blockers
  • Too often gets caught hand-fighting at the line initially rather than winning to one shoulder early
  • Presents a limited radius as a tackler, leading to a career miss rate of 15.3%
.
Fiske has been on an astronomic rise during this pre-draft process, catching up with a high grade that I already had on him based on watching him during the actual season. The motor and level of activity he played with made him one of my favorite players to study overall. This guy comes off the ball with a purpose. He can penetrate on run plays but will also strain to control his space and then slide off blocks to get his hands on the ball-carrier. He has the quickness and his movements and hand-swipes to put pass-protectors to, but will also push them up the pocket and make quarterbacks uncomfortable back there if he has to. Unfortunately, his arm length is clearly below NFL standards and you have to question if there’s a clean schematic fit for him at that profile. Yet, with how dominant he was throughout Senior Bowl week and the incredible performance he delivered at the combine – leading all interior defensive linemen in the 40-yard dash (4.78), vertical (33.5 inches) and broad jump (9’9”), as well as short-shuttle time (4.37) – I have a tough time seeing him make it outside the top-50 picks now.

.

6. Ruke Orhorhoro, Clemson

6’4”, 290 pounds; RS SR
.
Despite only playing two years of high school football, Orhorhoro was a top-1000 overall recruit and became the first Clemson commit from the state of Michigan since 1975. He barely got onto the field his first two years for the Tigers, but over the following two as a rotational piece, he combined for 59 tackles, eight for loss each year, 6.5 combined sacks, eight passes batted down at the line and a fumble recovered in each.
.
~Run defense:~
  • Lined up all over the D-line for the Tigers, from nose-tackle all the way to six-technique
  • Defends the run with good pad-level and maximizes his length when asked to gap-control or even two-gap
  • From shade-alignments and on slants, he consistently is looking to attack one shoulder of the blocker and keep his opposite arm free
  • You love his ability to stay square on the front-side of zone concepts, lock out and then fall back a gap as he tracks the ball-carrier, creating first contact
  • Frequently is able to press off and create leverage on the gap after the guy across from him takes that initial step reach-block him
  • Was very effective on early-down gap-exchanges, with his lateral agility to loop over the top of traffic and take away the front-side, forcing running backs to redirect
  • Looks like he’s almost bouncing off blockers and then running down the back a few times, providing excellent pursuit
  • Received PFF grades above 75 vs. the run in each of the past two seasons
.
~Pass-rush:~
  • The ability to win against centers with the club-rip, where he pushes at the shoulder and really pulls the inside arm through leads to some clean Ws for him
  • Has some nice reps where he freezes the feet of guards by stuttering off the line and then cornering his rush with that rip-through
  • Packs a rapid arm-over to free himself from pass-protectors as he’s recognizing play-action after engaging with those guys
  • Guards lunging forward trying to quick-set him get beat cleanly off the line with the club-swim a few times
  • Yet if they initially sit back, he’s also very good at anticipating up their punch and linking his arms and hips in order to win on cross-face moves paired with a tight arm-over mauneuver
  • When he’s at the hip of a blocker and that guy has him arm-barred to push off with the back of his near-arm or pull it over and clear that, as he chases the quarterback
  • Showcases good awareness for screen passes and trails the back working outside, forcing quarterbacks to dirt the ball
  • Was tied for tenth among interior D-linemen in this draft in 2023 pass-rush productivity (7.1) – 26 pressures on 235 rush opportunities
.
~Weaknesses:~
  • Has room to improve his ability to read and counter the first step(s) of the offensive line, particularly staying a half gap ahead so to speak against wide zone
  • Gets blown off the ball by double-teams quite a bit, lacking the ability to anchor effectively against the angular element of those
  • When linemen get their hands inside his chest quickly (on short-sets), too often he’ll end up battling them instead of being forceful with attacking one shoulder to gain control of the rep
  • Generally has room to grow as a “reactionary” pass-rusher, countering the approach of opponents on the fly and figuring out how to give them trouble throughout games – being moved around as much as he was didn’t help with that development, to be fair
.
Assuming no issues in terms of medical report or otherwise, I believe the top-five on the interior D-linemen is pretty concrete, even though the order may ultimately look different for the NFL as a whole. With that being said, Orhorhoro was pretty clearly my next name up here, because even though he’s not a complete player at this point or I see a defined scheme fit, I see him as an extremely useful player for a variety of systems. His ability to play low, combined with length, the short-area quickness and play demeanor, you’re got yourself a pack of dynamite on the interior. I do believe you want to protect him early on at least, where he‘s in shade-alignments and can play that “gap-and-a-half” but not deal with legit double-teams, and he certainly has room to grow in that first phase of the pass-rush and he approaches those matchups. However, I really liked his tape and then he finished with a 9.88 RAS score at the combine thanks the second-best broad jump (9’8”), third-best vert (32 inches) and fourth-best 40 (4.89) for his position, along with putting together an excellent on-field workout.

2024.03.30 03:43 Cryhavok101 Only an Upstanding Citizen of the Empire Would Appreciate This Pile of Bad Decisions.

Anyone who knows me, knows that basically all my builds are theme builds to one degree or another. I match a captain to a ship based on their race, and shove a theme into it that feels right to me. Today's theme is the Imperial Romulan Navy, which on the surface is "warbirds, but with disruptors instead of plasma" but everyone knows the Romulan Empire is also plagued with a bit too many mad scientists to be very healthy, so I added some space magic in as well.
It took me a while to settle on which ship to use for this build, right up until they gave us an experimental weapon that based it's damage on Aux and EPG. I immediately wanted to find out if that was an adequate replacement for a secdef on a space magic build that didn't use a sciship as the base platform.
Unfortunately I still don't know because I am too lazy to parse anything 99% of the time.
Below is the build as I envision it when finished. I am still working on it, with delays caused by budget requirements and rep grinding. It'll get there eventually, but even with substandard personal traits and doffs, the build still performs decent enough to get by in elite PUGs, which is where I spend my time when I'm not soloing. That, by the way is something that you should keep in mind when reading any of my builds is that they are not made with constructed teams in mind. And while that doesn't necessarily change a lot of choices I might make, it does affect some of them.

Build Description

The basic idea of this build is to take advantage of the synergy between the needs of my weapons and exotic damage abilities. The Aux DHCs and Focused Particle Cannon scale with and use Aux power, while the omni still uses weapon power, it's AoE damage proc thematically fits in with the SIA based Anomalies build taking up the rest of the ship. Disruptor weapons fit well with the five magics and dragonsblood reactor, and the FPNA is an additional, powerful aux based ability. So I dedicated all the power I could to Aux, and went to town. The Town did not last long.
Trait-wise I am really torn between using Ruin of My Enemies or Synthetic Good Fortune, and have been swapping between them trying to decide. SAD might seem like an odd choice on a single hangar ship, but I deemed that the additional -DRR on my own weapons, and the additional application of -DRR from the type 7 shuttles made it worthwhile.
There isn't really anything special about my personal or rep traits, pretty standard fair for DEWSci, with some extra HP traits stuck in there for survivability and boosting Tyler's Duality just a tad.
My skill tree is pretty questionable, since I don't even try to get Focused Frenzy, but I often do that. It's not recommended by any means unless you are experienced enough to understand how and why you like departing from a more meta skill set-up. If you are going to try this build out for yourself, I recommend trying a more standard skill set-up first, and adjusting it to your preference. In fact, I'd argue that's probably what you should do when copying any build, unless the build calls for a very specific skill set-up in order to function... mine never have though, so don't worry too hard about copying my skill set-up.

I have a bunch of rb2s on my roster like Elijah Mitchell, Dameon pierce, and Tyler allegeier. I need to slim down my roster just a tad and was thinking of adding one into a trade. Which would you most likely move on from?

2024.03.06 18:05 Bobba_fat USA Olympics basketball roster

KD sounding off that he wants to win by 40-50 points against any team. Possible? Maybe, maybe not.
We all know rest of the world has catched up, no doubt, but at the same time, this team, is just a tad bit old to be in its super prime, but still it’s a prime time team that could if everything is clicking on all cylinders being able to destroy teams by 30 in my opinion.
According to to a source from the athletics
https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nba/news/team-usa-roster-tracker-rumors-news-basketball-olympics/b51e215301534f5ae2f42ad7
G Devin Booker
G Stephen Curry
F Kevin Durant
C Joel Embiid
G Jrue Holiday
F LeBron James
F Jayson Tatum
5 more players can be chosen.
So let’s say we divide it in this way:
G
G
F
F
F/C
Here are my picks to fill the rest of the roster:
G Kyrie Irving, Mavericks
G Tyrese Haliburton, Pacers
F Anthony Edwards, Timberwolves
F Paul George, Clippers
F/C Anthony Davis, Lakers
I just love watching Kyrie play, but like tyrese they aren’t the best defensive guards. Hence why I put two top dawgs in the forward slots that can really play that part but also be offensive juggernauts when needed. Lastly, AD cause he has been nothing short of amazing and finally this year has been delivering like crazy and more than anything just been available.
Also, a bigger player like Chet/Bam could replace Guard or Forward just to be sure If embiid or AD gets hurt but I feel like Lebron could step into that role and hold it down, whilst it’s a bit risky move, health is always an issue and shouldn’t be overlooked.
I also could see trae instead of any of the guards or kawhi Leonard instead of either forwards.
Here is the list of players:
Bam Adebayo, Heat
Jarrett Allen, Cavaliers
Paolo Banchero, Magic
Desmond Bane, Grizzlies
Scottie Barnes, Raptors
Devin Booker, Suns
Mikal Bridges, Nets
Jaylen Brown, Celtics
Jalen Brunson, Knicks
Jimmy Butler, Heat
Alex Caruso, Bulls
Stephen Curry, Warriors
Anthony Davis, Lakers
Kevin Durant, Suns
Anthony Edwards, Timberwolves
Joel Embiid, 76ers
De'Aaron Fox, Kings
Paul George, Clippers
Aaron Gordon, Nuggets
Tyrese Haliburton, Pacers
James Harden, Clippers
Josh Hart, Knicks
Tyler Herro, Heat
Jrue Holiday, Celtics
Chet Holmgren, Thunder
Brandon Ingram, Pelicans
Kyrie Irving, Mavericks
Jaren Jackson Jr., Grizzlies
LeBron James, Lakers
Cam Johnson, Nets

2024.02.29 12:56 thisvideoiswrong Strict Budget Build part 2: 97k ISA DPS exotic for 14 mil ec, 245k dil

I never intended to make a part 2 of my original Strict Budget Build post, I thought it was sufficient on its own to get people started and then they could grow from there. But eventually, I got curious as to what could actually be achieved relatively quickly. So, where the first part was something to start your reputation grind with, this picks up at the end of your grind to tier 5, about one month into endgame. Or perhaps at the midpoint, since really it only requires Dyson, Temporal, Discovery, Romulan, and Nukara reputations, just 5 out of the 13, and 5 of the easier ones. I did switch from the Luna Reconnaissance Science Vessel, which I said I'd picked because I thought it was the weakest option, to the much more durable Trident Deep Space Science Vessel, so if you don't have that already it will add another 20k dilithium to the total cost. Getting peak DPS does depend on getting the right team, and I was playing ISA with whoever the game matched me with, so my most recent ISA results were 97k, 46k, 90k, 97k, and 64k, the very low ones being in runs with much higher DPS players, while 90k runs were frequently with players who didn't know the map. I also played Wanted Elite following these tests, my most recent results being 63k, 66k, 68k, 68k, and 75k, and I played one ISE with a team from one of the DPS channels and got 126k DPS. Now, ISE requires a minimum of 110k average DPS from each player to complete, and I am an experienced player with completed endeavors, and I had a team of good DPS builds I knew could pick up the slack for me if I didn't do well, and I still only did it once. So I don't recommend trying elites with this exact build, but if you get it onto a T6 ship you should be ready for them immediately.
I have tested easy ways of grinding out each of these 5 reputations with the previous build. I recommend Epohh Tagging for New Romulus, since that involves no combat at all, just a minute of running around every day. The next step up the difficulty ladder is the Dyson Ground Battlezone, but again I had no difficulty doing that with just mission gear before, and it also rewards a lot of dilithium. Then there's the Nukara Prime ground adventure zone for Nukara marks, and some dilithium there as well. The Badlands space battlezone is also quite doable, although I found that there I needed Emergency Power to Shields to survive comfortably (of course where the Luna had to choose between that and Aux to Structural the Trident can use both). As a bonus it also gets you Terran marks, so you can be grinding that reputation at the same time. And finally there's Discovery reputation, and the easiest way I've found to grind that is with the Defense of Starbase One TFO. That TFO can be soloed, though, and the easiest way is to run ~100 km away from the starbase until a wave ends, finish off the remaining ships, and then run away again, so that you only have to fight one spawn of ships per wave. But for the record, it is possible for this build to stay in combat throughout a wave on Advanced difficulty, killing every spawn of enemies without dying, that's just the much harder way. Each reputation will require 30 20 hour projects to reach tier 5, each of which will cost 30 marks, and you'll want to make sure you're collecting marks on enough days to have some left over to buy equipment at the end, you'll need 1500 Temporal, 1000 Dyson and Discovery, and 500 Romulan, but you do get 750 for hitting tier 5. In that time I also assume you should have been grinding out a fair bit of dilithium, and the 245k cost of this build is just 31 days of maxed out refining. But out of that total 125k can be reputation dilithium, of which you get 32k for each reputation that reaches tier 5, so completing those 5 reputations will get you more than enough for all the reputation gear in the build. The remaining 120k is spent on three Phoenix 10 packs, actually with decent luck you can manage with only two 10 packs, but I'm assuming three for safety and to allow you to keep some of your higher ranked tokens. The energy credits could be the hardest part, getting large quantities of them quickly isn't that easy for a newer player. I was able to make 825k in one 15 minute run of Tour the Galaxy using only the Temporal reputation core, add the Polaric Modulator to that and you could do better, so at worst you'd need 17 days of grinding that. More likely you'll be collecting most of it along the way, and of course some things may be cheaper or more expensive, I'm assuming 6 million for the Delphic Tear Generator, 6 million for Onboard Dilithium Recrystalizer, 1 million for the Particle Emission Plasma, and a very high 1 million for all the rest. If you have to choose, top priorities not in the previous build should be the Gravimetric Photon and Particle Emission Plasma torpedoes, followed by the Temporal set items, then the Discovery set, then the Delphic Tear Generator, and then the rest. The build flies almost identically to the earlier version in ISA and in episodes, so I won't reiterate that advice here.

Captain Details

Captain Name  Stilt
Captain Career  Science
Captain Faction  Federation
Captain Race  Vulcan
Primary Specialization  Temporal  Definitely the best specialization for exotic builds, as well as for ground builds and a good generalist option, it provides debuffs, damage boosts, and EPG/KPerf
Secondary Specialization  Strategist  Almost always the best secondary specialization in space, providing a lot of damage boosts and some survivability

Space Skill Tree

Rank  Engineering    Science    Tactical
Lieutenant    Advanced Hull Capacity      Advanced Energy Weapon Training  Advanced Projectile Weapon Training
Lt. Commander  Improved Electro-Plasma System Flow  Impulse Expertise  Improved Control Expertise  Drain Expertise  Targeting Expertise  Defensive Maneuvering

          Defensive Coordination
          Offensive Coordination

24 (Ultimate)      Focused Frenzy
25 (1st Ultimate Enhancer)      Frenzied Assault
26 (2nd Ultimate Enhancer)      Team Frenzy
This is my first foray into generalist skill trees, not really something I'm doing on my other characters. Many generalist skill trees sacrifice some capability in exotic builds, but I was more willing to sacrifice something from weapon builds, so I thought it would be something different. In fact I was able to cover every key damage skill, even full points in Hull Capacity for Tyler's Duality, without running out of points, and even got Hull Plating as well. I did have to make sacrifices in Impulse Expertise, where two points are recommended to help with slower ships, and in subsystem power, where having only one point in Aux power boosting made hitting the cap require very careful console selection, and energy weapon builds would like extra Weapon power for their overcap pool. And of course this skill tree has only the tiniest concessions to survivability, a tank might have really liked a point in Hull Restoration, Shield Restoration, or Shield Regeneration depending on what they're using for most of their healing. Still, this does cover all of the most important things, and there's even one point spare to use as you choose. If you'd prefer something more specialized Long Range Targeting and EPS exclusively benefit energy weapons, and most of the tactical skills and the tactical ultimate only benefit weapons.

Ship Loadout: Deep Space Science Vessel

Slot  Item  Notes
Fore Weapon 1  Gravimetric Photon Torpedo Launcher Mk XV  From Dyson rep, the rifts it spawns scale with exotic damage and are powerful
Fore Weapon 2  Particle Emission Plasma Torpedo Launcher Mk XV  1 million ec on the Exchange, plus upgrade costs if it doesn't come at Mk XV, the cloud scales with exotic damage and is powerful
Fore Weapon 3  Phaser Wide Angle Dual Heavy Beam Bank Mk XII  From Discovery rep, here for the unlisted +20% cat2 all damage it provides

Aft Weapon 1  Dark Matter Quantum Torpedo Launcher Mk XII  From Discovery rep, here for the 25% crtd from the 2 piece set bonus
Aft Weapon 2  Heavy Chronometric Polaron Turret Mk XII  Retained from the previous version to fill slot and for the aux power from the 2 piece
Aft Weapon 3  Dyson Proton Weapon Mk XII  From Dyson rep, has a decent set bonus with the torpedo

Deflector  Solanae Deflector Array Mk XII Very Rare  Retained from the previous version, the only significant upgrade would be to Fleet Colony, or maybe Gamma rep
Secondary Deflector  Deteriorating Secondary Deflector Mk XV [ShCap][HullCap] Rare  Retained. 12,000 ec for a common and 4 Phoenix upgrades. Worst version of a Mk XV DSD, so good for comparison
Impulse Engines  Sol Defense Impulse Engines Mk XII Very Rare  Retained to fill slot, the upgrade would be to Competitive rep but that's hard to grind out
Warp Core  Temporal Defense Initiative Overcharged Warp Core Mk XII Very Rare  Has a good set bonus with the shield, and allows high sector space speeds
Shields  Temporal Defense Initiative Regenerative Shield Array Mk XV [Cap]x2[ResAll] Very Rare  Reputation shields are usually better than regular ones, and this has a good set bonus too, I also upgraded it for durability

Devices  Exotic Particle Flood  Crafted in Science R&D. I do have to admit that the materials are a little hard to come by, and Admiralty (with account unlocked ships) is the best source I've found.
Delta Alliance Reinforcements Beacon  Handy damage boost

3 Engineering Consoles  Console - Universal - Assimilated Module Mk XII Very Rare  From Omega rep, nice crit boost, plus a bit of CtrlX which this build is lacking in
Console - Zero-Point Energy Conduit Mk XII Very Rare  From New Romulus rep, crit chance and a little bit of power
Console - Universal - Delphic Tear Generator Epic  From exchange, about 6 million ec, 20% cat2 exotic damage and a good clicky

4 Science Consoles  Console - Science - Temporal Disentanglement Suite Mk XII Very Rare  Retained, nice crit and durability boost, plus some power.
Console - Science - Temporally Shielded Datacore Mk XII Very Rare  Retained, slightly less EPG than Bellum Particle Generators but it makes up for it with the CtrlX
Console - Science - Exotic Particle Field Exciter Mk XV [Pla] Ultra Rare  Should be under 500,000 ec on the Exchange at Mk XV, well under after upgrade weekends, since people are looking for good mods like [AuxPwr], [CtrlX], or best [EPG], still lots of EPG and some survivability
Console - Science - Bellum Particle Generator Mk XII Rare  You should get some of these from boxes while leveling Disco rep, 1.1% crit chance plus regular EPG is a nice upgrade

2 Tactical Consoles  Console - Tactical - Fek'ihri Torment Engine Mk XV Very Rare  From Leap of Faith, excellent for boosting the DSD and does significant damage itself, so worth upgrading, and totally displaces the old Multi-Conduit
Console - Tactical - Chronometric Capacitor Mk XII Very Rare  Retained, good EPG and some aux from the 2 piece

Officer Details

Bridge Officers
Commander Science  Hazard Emitters I   Sci heal/debuff clear. Almost all abilities are identical to previous version.
Charged Particle Burst I   AoE secdef proc, use freely and frequently
Photonic Officer II   Your main cooldown reduction, very important
Gravity Well III   Nelen Exil from completing Dyson rep comes with GWIII and is the best ground boff, get him.

Lt. Commander Science  Tachyon Beam I   Single target secdef proc for extra firepower, this boff is the Hieerarchy one from Alliances
Efficient/Pirate  Tyken's Rift I   AoE secdef proc, alternate with GW
Destabilizing Resonance Beam II   AoE secdef proc, use with GW, from Blood of Ancients

Lieutenant Tactical  Tactical Team I   Distributes shields and clears debuffs
Torpedo: Spread II   Lots more torpedo damage

Lieutenant Engineering  Emergency Power to Engines I   A must have mobility buff, can be paired with the Emergency Conn Hologram from Phoenix
Auxiliary to Structural I   A powerful and quick heal and resist, and you'll want this when you upgrade to Particle Focusers

Ensign Engineering  Emergency Power to Shields I   The advantage of this ship, some very nice damage resistance that will keep you going in most content

Traits & Duty Officers

Trait  Name  Description  Notes
Personal Traits  Particle Manipulator    This is the most important trait for exotic builds, and comes from level 15 science R&D. You'll need 105 Hydrazine Gas to level it up, I used the first space section of Stranded in Space to grind for that, grab them, warp out, repeat
Astrophysicist    All personal traits are unchanged from the previous version, even though I now have 311 EPG
Conservation of Energy    Very good when you're not on a team, likely to get dropped in more developed builds
Fleet Coordinator    Very good when you're on a team, always use
Innocuous    Not great, but might as well
Nanite Repair Matrix    A bit of survivability, from the same mission as Sol Defense, there aren't many decent free survivability traits, although the one from completing Engineering R&D would be better
Operative    A little bit more crit
Photonic Capacitor    Photonic Fleet is good, so more of it is good
Projectile Training    A tad more torp damage

Starship Traits  Unconventional Tactics    From completing Strategist specialization, the easiest to get decent starship trait
Onboard Dilithium Recrystallizer    From exchange, a permanent 10% cat2 for an exotic build, about 6 million ec

Space Reputation Traits  Advanced Targeting Systems    From Dyson rep. The best rep trait for sci builds because it pairs well with Particle Manipulator
Auxiliary Power Configuration - Offense    From Nukara rep. Excellent offensive option on sci builds
Chrono-Capacitor Array    From Temporal rep. Helps with any cooldown concerns
Precision    From Romulan rep. Another strong offensive trait

Duty Officers  Projectile Weapons Officer  Chance to reduce the time to recharge torpedoes Very Rare  "Law" from A Fistful of Gorn, a bit of a pain to get there, but worth having
Chance to reduce the time to recharge torpedoes Common  Projectile Weapons Officer  Chance to reduce the time to recharge torpedoes Common  Included in my first duty officer pack, I'm thinking that one might be fixed
Astrometrics Scientist    Also in my first pack, handy to have set
Conn Officer  Recharges Evasive Maneuvers when Emergency Power to Engines is activated. Very Rare  From Phoenix, a must have for mobility in any build
Gravimetric Scientist  Chance to create an aftershock Tyken's Rift Very Rare  From Phoenix, provides some extra damage, and the aftershocks do apply the secdef

Everything here is guaranteed, but you may be able to do better. Joining a fleet could provide you with more trait slots, better science consoles, and maybe even a better deflector. Complete all 5 reputations above to T6 and that will get you the Fleet Ship Modules needed to buy a T6 ship from your fleet. The Dranuur Scout Ship is one of the best options in the game for very high DPS, and the Fleet Nova and Fleet Oberth are both very capable with a DSD-lean build like this, while the Fleet Nautilus, Fleet Augur, and Fleet Comet share a specialization into the Entwined Tactical Matrices-lean exotic builds, and the Fleet Intrepid is not bad either if you want the classic design. Event TFOs are usually impossible to fail, can be soloed, and reward significant quantities of any mark of your choice along with some dilithium, so running them can be a great option for grinding, especially grinding the more difficult reputations like Competitive. The event reward may be relevant, we've gotten many consoles from different events that are quite powerful, as well as very usable ground gear. The event bonus days give large quantities of dilithium. Then there are the recruitment events, which will at least give extra marks to every character on your account, but may also provide special duty officers, an excellent Starship trait, or even a T6 ship, although not one that this build can be used on. And we do get T6 ships from events at least 3 times a year, as well as the yearly event campaign.
For further advice, check out the STO BETTER Exotic Basics page, and eventually their Tier Lists page. I also used their TRINITY DPS Calculator to look at potential build changes, and of course the enormous Revisiting Exotics series which does deep dives into the mechanics of almost every exotic-related thing that comes out.
Finally, here's a summary of all my damage sources over 500 DPS in one ISA run, with multiple lines from one source (for example the three Delta Alliance ships) added together.
Deteriorating Secondary Deflector 27813
Particle Emission Cloud 9684
Delta Alliance Beacon 8890

2024.02.22 15:44 cbusmusicnerd This is a longshot but I'm in an up -and-coming band from Columbus, Ohio and we want to somehow reach out to to Twenty One Pilots about their upcoming tour. Any suggestions?

Hey y'all, I play in a band called Cellar Dwellar from Columbus (Tyler & Josh's hometown) and I want to see if we could get our music to them in anyway by reaching out. Also would want to inquire about opening up at their Columbus date but obviously that is a tad...unrealistic but you never know. We started because of tøp and have grinded at the same venues as them and it'd be neat for them to hear our music.
Anybody know anyways to reach them, has anybody had any success contacting them?
I only know their booking company as of now and reached out to them.

"A sometimes flawed but brilliantly unique title from Dont Nod"

If you're a fan of games like The Witcher and God of War, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is an absolute must-play.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is an impressive game that showcases DON'T NOD's mastery of storytelling. It's a delightful combination of heartbreaking storytelling and fluid gameplay. I can definitely recommend it.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a journey into a wonderfully dark, serious and sometimes harsh world. You can expect many tough decisions, great characters and interesting twists, especially in the so-called "Haunting Case" side missions. Apart from that, the combat is unfortunately disappointing, remaining far too repetitive and clunky, and there is too much aimless wandering in the search for mission objectives. However, fans of the occult and the supernatural à la The Witcher or detective stories should definitely pick it up.
Checkpoint Gaming - Luke Mitchell - 8 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden heavily leans into the premise of challenging decisions with dramatic consequences, and manages to pull off an emotional and haunting love story where those choices do feel like they truly matter. Red and Antea feel like fully-fleshed out, interesting characters, forever linked to one another but struggling to let go. New Eden is full of communities plagued by supernatural creatures and dark secrets that make each of them intriguing to explore. An over-reliance on combat and a little too much hand-holding when it comes to solving cases is disappointing, but Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden can still be chalked up as yet another storytelling triumph for DON'T NOD. Life for the living. Death for the dead.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden promises an unforgettable adventure, offering a well-balanced mix of combat, exploration, and narration to captivate players from the first moments.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden was able to distinguished itself with the way it achieved things and presented a good story, and it would have been excellent had it not been for the overlapping of all the stories with each other, in addition to interesting characters. It failed to provide a good visual level and a stable technical performance with frustrating repetition in the enemies and in the design of some areas, making the game in a lower position than Was expected of her.
Enternity.gr - Stylianos Almpanidis - Greek - 8 / 10
After 30 hours that it takes to complete the main story of the game, the only thing that is certain is that Banishers: Ghost of New Eden manages to keep the interest undiminished and many will return to it for the alternative endings it offers.
FandomWire - Luke Addison - 8 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden oozes class, with a 20 to 30-hour story and plenty of off-the-beaten paths to explore – most with a reward at the end. You’ll be pitted with some disgusting and distressful story moments, some out-of-the-book thinking, and some genuinely hard decisions. The combat and accompanying skill trees will keep you invested and satisfied, whilst allowing enough different combinations you’ll feel each playthrough is different enough to warrant another one, and at the center of it all is a love story between two lovers who want nothing more than to be together forever, but the forces at play seem intent on stopping that. My only hope is that the game sells as well as the lasting memories it has left me with deserve, and we get a new, genuinely unique franchise from this.
GGRecon - Joshua Boyles - 4 / 5
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is an example of Don’t Nod doing what Don’t Nod does best - deliver an enthralling, story-driven title that had me hooked in its world and characters from the opening titles. It’s elevated by inspirations from other titles with bigger budgets in this genre and is all the better for it with a stunning world that invites you to explore.
The combat sections fall a little flat, and the run-time feels ever so slightly too long. However, the weight of the storytelling more than offsets these frustrations and will drive players through to see the ending of this magnificent adventure.
GameGrin - Ariel Chloe Mann - 10 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is astounding, and the way it tells a compelling story and connects you to the characters is really impressive. It's impossible not to recommend this masterpiece of a game.
GameMAG - Russian - 8 / 10
While not a masterpiece, Burnishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a very solid game. And the unique dark fantasy setting is a huge advantage.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a breath of fresh air among games I've played in recent years. Haunting Cases are amazing and world design is impressive. on the other hand, it suffers from different issues like low enemy variety, camera positioning and sporadic frame rate drop. That being said, it still delivers an amazing experience from start to finish.
Gameffine - Jay Krishnan - 77 / 100
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden tells a compelling, emotionally charged story that's supported by a layered cast of characters and great performances. It does stumble a bit when it comes to combat and encounter design and the awful lip-syncing does undermine the otherwise stellar voice acting. But if you're someone used to AA experiences, the pros far outweigh the cons. For $49.99, you're getting a well-written, lengthy single-player campaign with a slew of engaging side content that may take you anywhere from 25-50 hours to knock off.
GamingBolt - Shubhankar Parijat - 8 / 10
Don't Nod has taken several key lessons from Vampyr and applied them to great effect with its second action RPG. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden might not be revolutionary in anything that it does, and from a gameplay standpoint, it can sometimes feel a bit too straightforward for its own good, but with a well-realized setting, captivating story, excellent protagonists, and genuinely compelling choice-and-consequence moments, it's an easy game to recommend to fans of the genre.
GamingTrend - Cassie Peterson - 80 / 100
Banishers: Ghost of New Eden is a grim and gripping tale of two lovers coming to terms with love and sacrifice. Don't Nod have built another beautiful world to enjoy.
God is a Geek - Mick Fraser - 9 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a powerful, emotional and compelling tale that shows off a side of Don't Nod that we've never seen so well-lit.
Hey Poor Player - Andrew Thornton - 4 / 5
While it could use more enemy variety and some areas that are more open, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a highly engaging action RPG featuring a love story I wanted to see through to its haunting conclusion. There are a lot of RPGs releasing in the first couple of months of this year, and with many of them being higher profile, it would be easy to overlook Banishers, but I hope players don’t do so. This is the exact sort of title we need studios to invest in more often.
IGN Italy - Francesco Destri - Italian - 8 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is Don't Nod's most ambitious and solid game, and despite some flaws in pacing and repetition, it remains an action-adventure loaded with feeling and with a solid combat-system.
IGN Spain - Estrella Gomez - Spanish - 8 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a story full of love, spirits and sacrifices. This game has a very satisfying and challenging gameplay, as it forces players to face a series of ethical dilemmas, following DON'T NOD's usual tone. Immersive and beautiful, this experience is capable of enchanting any type of player.
Infinite Start - Mark Fajardo - 7 / 10
Perhaps the optimal approach to grasping Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is to view it as a high-investment endeavor. Initially, progress may feel sluggish, and the narrative might seem disjointed. However, with increased time and effort, the experience undergoes a marked improvement. Admittedly, transitioning from a lackluster encounter to a satisfactory expertise may not represent the most favorable exchange. Nevertheless, enthusiasts of ghosts, the occult, or dialogue-rich adventures are likely to discover it worthwhile.
MondoXbox - Mirko Rossi - Italian - 8.5 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden effectively blends all the most characteristic gameplay elements of the action-RPG genre, combining them with a high-quality narrative plot. The result is a traditional and solid title, capable of entertaining the player thanks to a well-balanced combat system, an always interesting exploration component, and a unique and meaningful narrative. A game that all lovers of the genre and good stories should add to their collection.
Oyungezer Online - İpek Atam - Turkish - 8 / 10
Don't Nod's best work yet. The impressive story, the immersive period atmosphere, the well-written characters and stories, and the smooth and enjoyable action are blended together, and it works very well.

When it comes down to that final eulogy, I have way more fond memories of Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden than I do regrets.
Press Start - James Mitchell - 9.5 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is well beyond anything Don't Nod has ever done. It successfully merges their renowned knack for solid characters and great stories, engaging and enjoyable combat and a unique setting to create an experience like no other. It's a incredible fun and easily the studios most ambitious game so far. It doesn't get much better than this.
Push Square - Liam Croft - 8 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden sees developer DON'T NOD reach a new development peak, as it marries an excellent narrative with engaging and enjoyable gameplay. Poor enemy variety and technical flaws hold it back from true greatness, but its excellent, story-focused side quests on the other side make a few drab combat encounters worth pushing through. The studio's best game to date, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a new IP we hope is here to stay.
Rectify Gaming - 8 / 10
I believe that Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden fills a specific niche in terms of genres, offering a unique blend of consequential story telling whilst also delivering a satisfying action role playing experience. It’s not perfect by any means, but it is a huge step forward in terms of creativity in the gaming medium and I’m all for it.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Unscored
Don't Nod's new third-person goth-tragedy action-adventure RPG is full of swashbuckling ghost hunting, bound up in a story unironically about the power of love. Despite some repetition and busywork, it's a great time.
SECTOR.sk - Branislav Koht - Slovak - 8.5 / 10
Long live the spirits! Or rather not? The main characters of the game know about it, but their destinies are affected by an unexpected event and certainty turns into doubt. You will fight and explore the landscape, but the most interesting are definitely ghost stories.
Spaziogames - Italian - 8.4 / 10
Despite a stiff combat system that sometimes feels imprecise, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden presents a compelling story about love, human misery and crucial social themes.
Stevivor - Steve Wright - 7.5 / 10
Banishers Ghosts of New Eden's rough edges are easily compensated by its charm. I had a ball meeting the inhabitants of New Eden and making judgements accordingly.
TechRaptor - Tyler Chancey - 7.5 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is underwhelming as an action RPG, but is a must-play thanks to solid character drama and challenging moral decisions.
The Beta Network - Anthony Culinas - 8 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden has turned out to be another strong IP for developers, Don’t Nod. The game features unique, real-time character-swapping to access different techniques and a solemn story that works best when it’s focused on the protagonists, Red and Antea. While the enemy variety is lacking and the investigation elements can be a tad tiresome, this 25-hour action RPG should absolutely be on your radar.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a fantastic piece of storytelling, and it gives you a compelling world, people and lore for you to delve into. While it labours in some areas, you can put your own personality and feelings into this largely linear adventure, making this a game and a tale that deserves to be experienced.
WhatIfGaming - Ali Hashmi - 8 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a heartfelt love story, and both Red and Antea are incredibly memorable leads. The detailed haunting cases, difficult choices, and dense atmosphere add up to one of DON'T NOD's best narrative titles in years. Banishers gracefully improves upon the foundation laid by Vampyr in more ways than one, but it's often bogged down by repetitive combat that takes too long to get going. Despite that, it's an adventure worth embarking on, that's refined and respectful of your time.
XboxEra - Jesse Norris - 8.7 / 10
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a fantastic video game. It is the type that raises the medium and shows how incredible these experiences can be. The combat is good enough to rarely hinder your enjoyment as you help or harm the local populace. In an era where new single-player IPs are hard to find, this one deserves to succeed.

2024.02.03 12:41 Worth-Ad-7514 Isn’t it unrealistic for crazy rich people to tell their kids to only date other crazy rich people?

I was reading “Crazy Rich Asians” it’s about a billionaire who falls in love with a middle class girl and the billionaires mother doesn’t like her because she doesn’t come from a rich family. The crazy rich Asian family in the book are old money.
I mean, there isn’t that many crazy rich people, wouldn’t that be narrowing their dating pool? Even if she did consider them marrying into “new money” crazy rich families, that would still narrow their dating pool.
Logan Roy from Succession said the same thing about Shiv marrying Tom; he said, “You are marrying someone beneath you.” First of all, that didn’t make sense for a couple of reasons: one, Logan Roy is “new money”; his parents were either lower or middle class, and then he moved in with his uncle, and he was lower or middle class, so wouldn’t it make sense for Logan to support his kids’ partners regardless of their socioeconomic background?
And as I’ve said, expecting your kids to only marry rich people is a tad unrealistic. Like if you were poor growing up but you went to college and went to med school and became a successful surgeon and now you are making bank and is now apart of the middle upper class it makes no sense for him to not like poor people.
Same for a billionaire who came from a poor family. Oprah and Tyler Perry are both billionaires and they came from poor families I doubt they care of their kids marry to rich families.

2024.01.31 23:40 matte_purple Big 12 2023 Uniform Tracker: Season-in-Review

Hello CFB! Welcome to the 2023 Big XII Uniform Season Review! In this historical/bittersweet year, we saw some impressive ball, added four teams, 2 are gearing up to leave, while another 4 are on the way. It’s been wild. We’re all proud of our Big XII teams, let’s check it out.
In this edition of the tracker, we’ll review each team’s different suits, my favorite and least favorite looks (helpfully labeled by Helmet/Jersey/Pants color), and a brief summary of my thoughts moving forward, uniforms and otherwise. And remember, “worst” is not an indicator of being a “bad combo” unless I explicitly say so, and apart from one or two, I’m sure they'll be alright. After that, I’ll give out my favorite content of the season in THE Big 12 2023 Uniform Awards, which will be a hoot. Later on, I’ll rank each team’s uniforms (that sweet offseason content) but for now we’ll get into it.
I’m u/matte_purple, and let's 3,2,1 go!

The last time UT Football produced a 12-win season and a Big 12 Title was 2009 with QB Colt McCoy. The program is - say it with me everyone! - BACK. From a Big 12 fan perspective, it's a bittersweet. You have a nationally recognized program with wide appeal that had several exciting games, tons of success, a tough but fair path to the Big 12 Championship, and a playoff appearance to show for it. But, they're also leaving for the SEC. It stings. I, for one, am a little sad about them leaving. They have a great roster, Quinn Ewers returning for another round, and a top 10 class on the way. Short of a Natty appearance, this was about everything a UT fan could have wanted. Your only losses being OU and the eventual CFB runner-up? That's a sweet deal. Here’s to your time in the SEC.
Obviously, UT doesn’t switch it up very often (in fact, it's been the same overall template since the 50s). There were a few changes introduced in 2022, notably removing the Longhorn on the collar, as well as the TV numbers on the top of the shoulders. Both design features appeared in 2013, when Texas upgraded to Nike’s Pro Combat Hypercool template. By virtue of my own template, I have to pick my least favorite of the two combos, so I’ll pick the away. The power and recognizability of the burnt orange jersey really does it for me. But of course, both looks are very nice (obviously, otherwise they wouldn't have stayed the same for nearly 75 years). The bold “Texas” on the front, which was first added in 1959, and reappearing in 1983-present, takes the cake. That's it for the Longhorns. What a season, now go kick some SEC butt!
#16 Oklahoma State Cowboys(10-4)

Roller coaster. Struggles at the start of 2023, including a rotating QB carousel, and hard losses to South Alabama and ISU, put a severe damper on the mood in Stilly. Then followed a domination of some Big 12 heavy hitters - including an excellent Bedlam win - before dropping an inexplicable 45-3 loss to a battered UCF. How do you have so many highs, lows, and nail-biters in a season? Ultimately, HC Mike Gundy, QB Alan Bowman (who will come back for his 7th season!), and game-breaking RB Ollie Gordon II led the Cowboys to a nice season, culminating in a pretty great bowl game, a tough Big 12 champ game, and a build-up to what should be a wild 2024 season. Don’t count out the Pokes, because they’ll still find a way.
The Cowboys did something I did not expect. They refreshed their already incredible uniforms this summer into ones that may not be beat. Oklahoma State always manages to get the balancing act of honoring brand and tradition while also fostering an exciting variety right. My favorite is the Black/Black Orange from Bedlam. It has all of the benefits of a blackout while keeping the sweet splash of orange. It’s mean as hell, gets the color ratio right, and exemplifies the new update really spectacularly. Last on my list was their combo worn against UCF. Not only was it the same combo worn in KSU’s blowout last year, but it was also featured in the disastrous 2023 UCF game. It feels unbalanced for a tricolor, the black weighs it down. It’s a shame that the orange shell helmet has to be put this low, as it’s my favorite Cursive shell. Some of my other favorites from the Cowboys include their all-blacks worn vs UT and KSU, their W/W/O option in Week 2, and their orange suits versus KU. Give them a look!

The other half of the SEC bound duo didn’t fare quite as well as UT, but they still did alright! Obviously, the season was a step up from 2022’s 6-7. HC Venables schemed his way to 80th nationally in total defense and 49th in scoring defense and his youthful team showed great execution in most of their games. QB Gabriel even had a game against WVU where he threw for 5 TDs and ran for 3. That's the real deal. They only lost to OSU, KU, and AZ, which were all great teams this season. They are in a great position heading into the SEC, and are slated to play some very tough teams next year. I’m going to miss OU, just like Texas. I have enjoyed KSU and OU’s recent history, but seriously, good luck in the SEC, Sooners.
Uniform-wise, this year was actually rather similar to last year for the sooners. The last time OU updated their suits - even in a minor fashion - was 2018 in their move to the Jordan brand. They also filled out the OU logo on top and changed the font on the “Sooners” up front. The anthracite uniform was released last year and was the only alternate worn this year, so overall it was a fairly pedestrian season for uniforms. My favorite of the three was the away look, simply for the fact that the home uniform has many similar looks across the nation. The white has a little bit more originality, it’s got a nice bit of color, and really pops against the home team. Since I have to pick a “least favorite,” I went with the “Unity” uniforms. I actually like it a lot. I think the color is great, and the story is even better. They honor OU alum Prentice Gautt, the first Black scholarship player for the Sooners, starring as a RB from 1957 to '59. And he played in the NFL! The anthracite uniforms sport the word "unity" on the nameplate, with "together" sewn on the collar. Also featured is the OK state outline on the pauldrons. I especially love that. But the stripe down the helmet doesn’t match the other stripes on the shoulders/pants, and it looks like there were a few helmets that were painted matte, not glossy, so it finds itself in my least favorite OU uniform of the year. Maybe we’ll see more alternates in the SEC? I’m just glad we didn’t get the “Lay Down the Wood” alternates this season.
#18 Kansas State University Wildcats (9-4)

Number of Combos: 2 Best: SilveWhite/Silver Worst: SilvePurple/White
Should this season feel like a disappointment for Wildcat fans? It’s hard to say. They had some VERY good games that went close. The Missouri game was lost thanks to a SEC record-breaking 61-yd FG, OSU was a weird case of black magic in Stilly, and their UT game was lost thanks to some odd OT play-calling and crucial special teams errors. Change around some possessions and you would have had a hell of a season. Sprinkle in some magic from true-freshman QB Avery Johnson (5 rushing TDs against TTU - the first to do it in the Big XII since Collin Klein in 2012 - and an efficient Pop-Tart MVP Bowl showing), and QB Will Howard, who led K-State to a wild 246-72 against losing opponents at home and broke KSU’s passing TD record. The lone loss at home was to ISU in a snowy version of Farmageddon. Some staff turnover, QB Will Howard leaving for Ohio State, and some tough NFL Draft and transfer exits will make things hard, but remember, they still have a great RB in Giddens, good WR transfers, proven QB Avery Johnson, and former TTU coach Matt Wells to work as OC. Weird, but still good, season for the ‘Cats.
Well, it’s another average year for the ‘Cats. K-State wore 3 combos last year and cut out their one alt this year. Just like UT, KSU has a style, and they stick to it. Bill Snyder introduced this look in ‘89, his first season at KSU. He threw in a helmet for military appreciation three times, but that’s it. HC Chris Klieman and his EQ team have maintained much of the same idea, only releasing alternates 2 times in his 5 years (changing silver to white twice doesn't really count in my book). That could change with a renewed Nike contract though. He’s been quoted as saying they can “start exploring those options” earlier this year. Just like last year, I chose the away look as my favorite because it looks so good against most every home uniform out there. I mean, take a look at that OSU vs K-State look? Or vs KU’s black alt? That silver shines nice above the white. The home is definitely good as well, just not quite as dashing. From here on out, we get lots more variety in our teams!
West Virginia University Mountaineers (9-4)

Number of Combos: 11 Best: Blue/Yellow/Blue Worst: Yellow/Yellow/Yellow
One of the most surprising Big 12 teams in 2023. Just months after Neal Brown rumors swirled, QB JT Daniels transferred, and hope seemed lost, they rose up and made a pretty great run. WVU was slotted at the bottom of the preseason poll, and they took that personally. QB Garret Greene was promoted to starter, the defense survived some tough injuries, and RB Jahiem White emerged, who will no doubt become a big part of the offense moving on. WVU closed out the season winning ⅘ games, losing to OK-State, OU, Penn, and a miraculous Hail Mary from Houston. Closing out the season with Neal Brown covered in Mayo with 9 wins is a lot better than what many Big 12 fans expected. They are riding high into the offseason!
WVU really knocked it out of the park. They only had a few looks that I thought were okay. For the most part, every look they wore had a lot of style. My least favorite were the “Gold-Rush” uniforms, simply because it’s so yellow. I think they tend to be most fans' least favorite. My favorite was the new version of the “Country Roads” suit introduced vs Pitt last year. While that version was primarily white, this year’s was a beautiful home variety that was perfect for the Backyard Brawl. It was also worn against UNC to great effect. The sublimated road map, the state outline logo with the Flying WV on the inside, the consistent striping on the helmet and pants, all topped off by the “Mountaineers” on the chest. This isn’t as retro as, say, the new OK-State suits or Texas Tech throwbacks, but they aren’t meant to be. It’s modern without looking corporate, and feels genuine. It's a sleek way to end their uniform year. Other stars include their standard home outfit of B/B/Y and my favorite away look, their W/W/B with the state-outlined flying WV on the helm from Week 5.
#23 University of Kansas Jayhawks(9-4)
Season Gallery Link: https://imgur.com/a/JamagD0
Number of Combos: 12 Best: Blue/Blue/Red Worst: Blue/Red/Blue
The last two seasons of KU football have been the best since 2007. HC Lance Liepold inherited a demoralized program after Les Miles was removed, but he’s turned it into something promising. They finished the season ranked for the first time in 16 years, and finished with a winning record and bowl victory for the first time in 15. KU opened the season with four wins, upset #6 OU in an instant classic, and won a bowl game against UNLV. Aside from a weird loss to TTU, a heartbreaker against KSU, and “normal” losses to UT and OK-State, KU continues to be a rising star. With new uniforms and alts, competitive Ws and Ls, a new stadium coming soon, and some star talent, this team is a phoenix. I’m excited to see what happens next year! This is about as nice as I can be to KU, so moving on!
The Jayhawks were one of three Big 12 schools that updated their uniforms over the summer. And to wide acclaim, I might add. It’s clean and cohesive, and the “Kansas” wordmark projects a confidence that was severely lacking with the old look. The “KU” letter logo is thankfully going away. It was only worn once last year and zero times this year. The shoulder stripes outlined in red is another great touch. Speaking of Trajan font, it’s the main reason I picked the Blue/Red/Blue as my least favorite combo. First, why would you continue to use an “outdated” jersey when you have a revamped blue jersey? It just reminds fans of the old KU. Second, why did they decide to wear primarily red against TTU? The whole combo reminded me of 3D glasses, and just felt disjointed. The B/B/R combo vs UCF was actually my favorite. It got the ratio of blue-red right, with the facemask tying the pants and the shoulder stripes together. No stripes on the helmet helps, too. My 2nd favorite was the all-white worn against Nevada in Week 3. It’s beautiful (and the winning combo I chose last year). The stripes on the helmet not matching the rest of the design puts it down one peg. Their blackout suits will definitely make an appearance in the Uniform Awards, so stay tuned.
Iowa State University Cyclones (7-6)
Season Gallery Link: https://imgur.com/a/OUycgfa
Number of Combos: 8 Best: White/White/Red Worst: Red/Red/Red
With six winning seasons in seven years, ISU under Campbell is having its best years since the 1910s. They bounced back from some gambling scandal news, ended with high performing and record setting play by QB Rocco Becht, four-straight road W’s - a school record - and 21 underclassmen and six true freshmen making big plays this season. Aside from some head-scratching losses to Ohio, Memphis, and Iowa, the others were competitive and fun (especially that Farmageddon game, right Cyclones?) I look forward to seeing their path in the new Big 12!
This was ISU’s most ambitious uniform year since their 2018 refresh. Apart from “blackout madness” that was the year 2020 for the ‘Clones, we saw lots of new ideas here, including two alt helmets. Their new black and cardinal helmet was worn twice in 2018 and once in 2019 before returning in Week 12 of 2023. I personally like it way more than the black/white Block I helmets (my main gripe with the blackouts is the lack of cardinal accents). But the next suit was BEAUTIFUL. The Jack Trice throwback featuring the chevrons that Trice and his team wore in 1923 was executed well, and brought us the best helmet they’ve worn since 1994 and 2007. The Ames helmet is simple and a beauty. Sure, this suit isn’t the sleekest alternate uniform out there. But the legacy, and history more than make up for the slightly odd tan pants look. My subjective best look is certainly that White/White/Red look worn against BU in Week 9. If ISU is going to continue to use the Block I logo, they may as well put it on a helmet that pops, and the cardinal accents paired with the bold pants looks smooth. Their worst - IMO - was the all-red suit worn in the bowl. It’s just so much red. Hot colors all in one big block looks clunky without suitable accents, and a primarily red logo doesn't stand out. Perfect time to add a vintage more yellow logo to the helm, perhaps? Overall felt like a sweet spot season with good throwbacks, fun spins on the regulars, and a perfect use of the black uniforms.
Texas Tech University Red Raiders (7-6)
Season Gallery Link: https://imgur.com/a/kRrjnXk
Number of Combos: 10 Best: Black/Black/Black Worst: Red/White/Red
The much hyped Red Raiders had a tough year. 2016 with Mahomes was the last time a TTU QB has started every season game. 2023 QB Tyler Shough suffered a broken leg in the season’s first Big 12 game. The injuries were tough for TTU through 2023, but to have to play three different QBs for several consecutive years is the equivalent of a dead man’s hand in modern CFB. Apart from the QB heartbreak, I think Tech finished strong in Nov. for Joey McGuire’s 2nd year. We saw some needed maturation from both QB Behren Morton and OC Zack Kittley. We saw some promising snaps from young guys, which will be important with some big seniority turnover on the sideline. Add on a top 25 recruiting class for 2024, and there is still plenty of reason to be optimistic for 2024. Hopefully the witch doctor in charge of the QBs can stop messing around. A disappointing season for TTU, but it may set up the pieces for something great.
I found myself looking ahead to the 2024 Adidas refresh during many weekends of the tracker. Not to say that TTU’s current closet is bad, it’s just lacking. We’ve seen what a great update can do for KU and OK-State, and Texas Tech deserves it. They struck gold in 2022 with their throwbacks (including this year’s 1978 throwback in Week 3), but we really need a clean slate. Luckily, the Adidas x Mahomes deal can swoop in and save TTU from the odd dual-tone stripes on the pants, chevron shoulder stripe, and small font on the chest. My standouts on the season were the Black/Red/Black combos worn 3 times this season, the 1978 look, and my top choice, the blackout worn against KSU in Week 7. All-black looks great when it’s actually a school color, and the red and white feels punchy on a black canvas. I’m excited to see it redone next season! My least favorite was the Red/White/Red worn against WVU’s all-yellow. The yellow did it no favors, but the Double T logo is literally 99% red. Putting it on a red helmet just isn’t right. It was the only time red helmets were worn this season. Keep your chin up, Tech fans. We’ll get through it!
University of Central Florida Knights (6-7)
Season Gallery Link: https://imgur.com/a/gYErwiN
Number of Combos: 11 Best: White/Blue/Blue Worst: Gold/White/Black
By far the most successful of the new four, they had a rocky season as well. After a steady non-con, they suffered loss after loss until the UC game, and then a magical blowout upset at home against Bedlam-winning OSU. They then suffered two more losses, including a one against GT in their bowl. Not a horrible start to their Big 12 career, but there’s lots to improve. Helping in the offseason are returning stars RJ Harvey, one of the better RBs in the Big 12, and WR Javon Baker, both important cogs in the UCF siege engine. They'll have a busy off-season in Orlando, but in Gus we Trust!
One thing that always rubs me the wrong way in most teams are “tri-color” or “mismatched” looks.Teams usually look best with some symmetry or majority color to them. The one exception to the rule is UCF. When your colors are all “intermediate” like white, gold, or black, as opposed to teams with bolder colors, you can squeak over the line. UCF wore a tri-color three times and looked decent in all of them. The mismatched lightmode suit versus Cincy in Week 10 was the only one I didn’t care for, due to the odd font style. The lightmode concept worked okay when paired with all white and similar accents, but it just looks cobbled together when pieced with other templates. Their best combo is, of course, the Space U game combo. The specialty suit has a unique shock of canaveral blue, a fantastic new helmet, and tons of Easter eggs and fun design choices make this one a treat. I’ll talk about it more in both the uniform awards and the UCF uniform ranker that will come later in the offseason, but just know I absolutely adore it. My favorite non-alternates are the White/Black/White combo worn in Week 9 against WVU and the all-black stunner with the alternate knight logo worn vs Houston.
Texas Christian University Horned Frogs (5-7)
Season Gallery Link: https://imgur.com/a/1WgQy8H
Number of Combos: 12 Best: White/White/White Worst: White/White/Black
What a fall from grace for the Horned Frogs. After being America’s darling in the last months of the 2022 season, they won only 3 Big 12 games. Their DC was let go, OC Briles felt inconsistent, and a few hopeful NFL departing draftees makes for an interesting off-season. The team failed to qualify for a bowl game, marking the first time since 2010 that a team who reached the CFP Title game failed to earn bowl eligibility the following season. On the bright side, redshirt Freshman QB Josh Hoover has some promise. The youth of the team as a whole has promise. Once he gets more experience and competition with Morris coming back in the spring and can get better at ball protection, I think there’s some opportunity for a higher ranking. Plus, TCU has a record of 53-11 following a losing season, so history is on their side!
TCU carried over 4 combos from the 2022 season, including the all-white combo that is definitely my favorite uniform of their season. But for the most part, aside from the bright spots of the new “frog-only” logo helmets and some novel new combos (like the all-purple, White/Black/Black, and Purple/Black/Purple), the season felt like a tad downgrade over last year’s uniforms. I can’t put a pin on it. But in my opinion, TCU looks great in black with purple accents. The inverse just feels off. The exceptions are the all-white and the White/Purple/White worn vs CU. My least favorite combo (W/W/B at K-State) really felt bland. The plain black pants make me sad when added to the white canvas. They throw off the rest of the suit balance wise, especially considering the only other black on the suit are like 3 of the collar’s diamonds. This suit could have really raised some eyebrows with a black helmet, or another all-white rendition. Slightly worse than last year, but I still really enjoy the variety from the ‘Frogs.
Brigham Young University Cougars (5-7)
Season Gallery Link: https://imgur.com/a/Vl4CqIL
Number of Combos: 11 Best: White/Royal/White Worst: Black/Black/Black
There was a lot of hype for BYU’s inaugural Big 12 season. The Cougars waited 12 years for an invite since going Independent from the Mountain West. Behind transfer QB Kedon Slovis, the Cougars were able to go undefeated in their non-conference play, highlighted by an exciting road win over Arkansas. And then reality struck. They won against Cincinnati in their conference home opener, and Texas Tech in a home night game, but lost every game afterwards. They had very real chances to knock off Oklahoma and Oklahoma State (in 2OT) at the end of the season, but couldn’t finish. A tough time full of questions for BYU, but I think the most glaring issue is a lack of experience in this conference. With some playing time, both coaches and players alike WILL be better next year.
BYU does the whole tradition thing very similar to K-State, Texas, and OU, with the only variety being the colors. All of these looks - except for the black uniforms they introduced this year - feel very traditional and classic. In fact, I’d bet you could show any one of the royal or navy combos to a non-football fan and convince them they were the preeminent BYU look. But one of them takes the cake: The White/Royal/White combo dates back to 1969, was worn by BYU in their 1984 national title season, and were brought back to wide acclaim in 2009. They have been worn frequently ever since. And boy, is there a reason for it. The beautiful color, the symmetry, the consistent striping, the iconic logo, this is the one. I love variety in uniforms, but this one should be celebrated. I also really enjoyed their Navy/White/Navy and even their all-navy look. Their worst look, as mentioned before, is the all-black. Why? Simple: Black is not a BYU color. I know the age of “Black for Black’s Sake” uniforms never really went away, as shown by Houston, KU, and a few other alternates in CFB, but it feels especially egregious here. BYU has an absolutely gorgeous color palette, and instead of leading with royal, they made it a secondary color. Plus, why on earth wasn’t the Stretch Y logo royal? The uniform itself is fine, but it just isn’t “BYU.”
University of Houston Cougars (4-8)
Season Gallery Link: https://imgur.com/a/N2AevXy
Number of Combos: 9 Best: White/Blue/White - Oilers Worst: Red/Red/Red
There were glimmers of hope for this Houston team throughout the season, winning games vs UTSA and Sam Houston, grabbing a surprise win against WVU, and winning in OT vs Baylor. Other than those scant few victories, it was a rough one for the Coogs (luckily, basketball is soothing some of those burns).Dana Holgerson continues to be a tough case. We’ll see how they recover next season.
Houston has always struck me as a team that didn’t really mind what they wore from game to game. Most of their combos feel standard, a little plain. They don’t have that much of a logo history to fall on, their color scheme is pretty regular, and usually, their alternate attempts are different varieties of black. That changed this season with the introduction of their Oilers-inspired suits. It’s historical. It looks incredible. The striping and coloration is PERFECT. Their look is a tribute to the rich history of a football-mad city, not a reminder of a franchise leaving a fan base behind. It's a shame the No Fun League issued a cease and desist to Houston for the color scheme (even though Rice also has an Oilers “throwback” that didn’t get in trouble). I really hope these come back. My least favorite look, much like Iowa State, is that all red look. It’s so bold and there’s no break in color. It’s compounded by the monogram logo and odd leg stripes. These uniforms feel like the other side of the BYU combo coin in a lot of ways, with one major color, all very “Houston” like, but without the history or magic of the royal blue. Maybe we’ll see another surprise like the Oilers look next year.
Baylor University Bears (3-9)
Season Gallery Link: https://imgur.com/a/b1ZMIR4
Number of Combos: 9 Best: Yellow/Yellow/Green Worst: Yellow/White/Yellow
The skid continues for Baylor. Two years removed from the Big 12 championship, Baylor does not look good. HC Dave Aranda is 23-25 in his fourth year in Waco, with a wide margin between his best and worst moments. The Bears had wins against Long Island University, Cincinnati and a miraculous comeback versus UCF, which is pretty slim pickings. Coupled with some heartbreaking losses, it wasn't the year to be in the Baylor line. At least the only way forward for the Bears is up. The Bears have a surprising 2024 class but still feel enigmatic.
Last year, Baylor fans consistently echoed a need for variety in their uniforms. The only time an article of yellow clothing was worn in the 2022 season was the all-yellow suits, which is a WILD fact. The whole premise of the 2019 update was interchangeability, and it was finally utilized here. This year was a breath of fresh air. They introduced three new combos, one of which was my favorite for the season. The Yellow/Yellow/Green combo was worn in Week 1 and Week 13 (A perfect beginning and end to the season - uniform wise, that is). They totally flipped the script on combos and made me a very happy uniform tracker. These have the perfect ratio of green to yellow while maintaining a nice simplicity. These are wonderful! My least favorite was also a brand-new combo: The Yellow/White/Yellow. It starred in what looked like a football acid trip on the TV vs TCU’s “Blood Red” threads, and I just don’t really like these. The green collar especially bugs me. I know these uniforms were much anticipated by the fanbase, and I wanted to see them, too, but the timing and the way the format just doesn't match up with this particular combo irks me. Almost every other combo is a win for me. Next year, more variety and logos would be a very welcome addition. After all, there’s 27 possible combos with their current wardrobe, and more when you add alternate helmets and such. This is probably one of the most improved teams uniform-wise in the Big 12.
University of Cincinnati Bearcats(3-9)

Number of Combos: 11 Best: Black/Black/Red Worst: Red/White/White
A rough entry for the Bearcats, in large part due to mediocre QB play from Emory Jones and a rocky first season for HC Scott Satterfield. In the end, it was just poor timing for both realignment and signing a new coach. Facing brand new teams is a tough pill by itself. The Bearcats won their first two non-con games against EKU and Pitt before promptly dropping 7 games in a row. Their sole Big 12 win came against Houston. And hey, just like BU, there’s no other way but up for Cincy.
The Bearcats were the last Big 12 squad to get new uniforms this summer. And yeah, they look pretty plain, but it works for them! It allows for a sleek, versatile look where each piece can be subbed out for another with little fuss. The only problem with that is this: Cincinnati definitely has a signature look. The all-black or black with red accents is the primo Bearcats style. This means that red jerseys and helmets kind of feel odd. Case in point, the worst look. The Red/White/White uniform has such promise. The helmet has some sort of unique paint on it that makes it seem almost velvety. But something about this look just feels wrong to me. I can’t pinpoint it. Anyway, my favorite look from them is the Black/Black/Red from Week 4 vs OU. Man, I guess red is a good pants color. It provides the right punch of color to a uniform without offsetting the balance of it and works great as a secondary color. Both these and KU, same story. Both of them went through the same simplification process this summer. Also, the C-Paw logo being scattered abundantly really helps out, as it’s the most recognizable symbol UC has. It's a good, clean look with the right pop of color. What else can I say? A good job uniform wise for Cincy. Maybe not award-winning, but stylish - if conventional.
Now, let's check out our Four Corners friends, joining in this summer!
University of Arizona Wildcats (10-3)
Season Gallery Link: https://imgur.com/a/m6CGYB5
Number of Combos: 8 Best: White/Blue/White Worst: White/Red/Red
What a surprising year for the Wildcats! After finishing 1-11 just two years ago, the Wildcats ended their season with a victory in their first bowl appearance since 2017 before heading to the Big 12. Their record included some very impressive wins against ranked teams like Washington State, Oregon State, UCLA and Utah. If one possession would have changed, they could have grabbed ranked wins against USC and Washington as well. Arizona was a giant slayer this year. I’m a little scared to see them in the Big 12. Fifita the breakout QB star and a large upperclassmen squad is back for 2023, and I think new hire Brennan can bridge the gap by riding momentum, while adding in some hires like former UNM/ASU (he he) coach Danny Gonzales for support. Bear down!
Arizona’s uniforms are a brilliant revitalization of the uniforms worn in the Dick Tomey era of football. In 1987, Tomey became head coach at Arizona, earning Pac-10 "Coach of the Year" honors in 1992. He coached five future NFL first-round draft picks, 20 All-Americans, and 43 Pac-10 first team players. His teams were highlighted by a tenacious "Desert Swarm" defense, where the uniform name comes from. His 95 school wins is the most in Arizona school history. These particular suits were introduced as alternates in 2019 after the Wildcats experimented from 2012 on with gradients. They were updated full time in 2021 to great applause. It’s timeless! And that goes for each variation of them. For the most part they remain consistent with the mismatched stripes, white “A” helmet, and sleek template. Aside from the stripes on the white uniform not being “mismatched” like the White/Blue/White uniform (my favorite, by the way), I feel great about each uniform worn, except for one. Much like other teams with a red secondary color, the red uniforms are a lot. It’s manageable with just one piece of red, but it feels like a lot even with the striping. Beautiful work still, and unique!
University of Utah Utes (8-5)
Season Gallery Link: https://imgur.com/a/ZEWfa7f
Number of Combos: 10 Best: White/White/White Worst: Black/White/Black
Utah had a bad case of the injury blues. TE Brant Kuithe and tailback Micah Bernard were both tough losses. QB Cam Rising was banged up bad during the 2022 Rose Bowl. The sixth-year senior hoped to return at some point in 2023 but was unable to do so. With a medical redshirt in hand, he has an opportunity to carry Utah to great things. Hopefully the transfer and recruiting trail can help the Utes, though: 4 sophomores and one freshman started on the offensive line in the bowl game. Jackson, the team's leading rusher with 797 yds, entered the transfer portal, as did backup QBs Barnes and Johnson. Three starters will have to be replaced in the secondary. The Utes have talked up some serious game, but they can certainly rise to the challenge. After all, Kyle Whittingham and his entire Utah program boast an 8-5 record in a “down” year. Also, I am VERY excited to see a Big 12 rendition of the Holy War.
I hadn’t done much research on the Ute’s uniforms before this season, and I was very pleasantly surprised. Utah has some of the nicer Under Armour templates I’ve ever seen. Updated in 2017, they go toe-to-toe with many other “updates” from the time period. Mainly, this is due to the no-nonsense and unique striping on the shoulders, the pleasing and easy to work with color scheme, and the easy font. The chest plate gets a little busy with the captain's patch, bowl patch, “UTAH” wordmark, and UA logo, but that's the only real issue I have. My favorite look by far is their all-white throwbacks worn in Week 8 and 11. They draw from various designs, including 1970s-1990s shoulder stripes, the interlocking UU logo from the 1960s, and - my favorite touch - the unique font from the 1970s. These are incredibly sexy. Other standouts are the home throwbacks worn in Week 4, the Ute Proud suits from Week 7, and their all blacks worn against ASU. But their home suits are excellent as well! I would put their Red/White/Red standard right at 4th on the season. The Black/White/Black suit just didn’t tickle my fancy. I think the gray stands out in it, which feels a little disjointed. But it’s still a pretty great suit. Damn good work from Utah. Keep an eye out for them in the Uniform Awards.
University of Colorado Buffaloes (4-8)
Season Gallery Link: https://imgur.com/a/7SCSU5A
Number of Combos: 12 Best: White/White/White Worst: Black/White/Gold
Coach Prime dragged his team to the finish line, ending with a final record of 4-8. The Buffaloes went 1-8 in Pac-12 play and ended the season with six consecutive losses. While it was a tough way to end Colorado's Pac-12 time, the finale at least provided some positives. Two-way star Travis Hunter has solidified himself as a great talent, the Sanders brothers will go back in action next year (assuming there aren’t too many fashion shows during the football season), and RB Dylan Edwards had a few grand slam runs that could lead to even more growth. They have a season under their belt and undeniable hype building for their Big 12 return. I’m excited to have K-State play against them this year!
Similar to TTU, I found myself anxious for the next rendition of CU’s uniforms that Deion said would come in 2024. They still wore some heaters, especially the Gold/Black/Gold (TBT the 1990 Colorado squad) and my favorite look, the all-white smoke show from Week 1. What is there to say? This is the perfect mix of gold leaf and black. The all-white field against TCU’s purple is gorgeous. I think this combo has the best flow in the line-up. My issue with CU’s uniforms this season stems from a lack of standardization. It felt like there were lots of uniforms from various years being thrown around. We know Coach Prime wants to add bling with the gold leaf/chrome, but it felt jarring throwing in a new helmet to a clearly older design sometimes. Look through the album to see what I’m talking about. My least favorite is the Black/White/Gold worn in Week 13. Tri-colors don’t do it for me. The different shades of gold make this feel way too jumbled. Which is your favorite?
Arizona State University Sun Devils (3-9)
Season Gallery Link: https://imgur.com/a/eXCLv20
Number of Combos: 12 Best: Yellow/Maroon/Yellow - Sparky Worst: Maroon/Black/Black
ASU had one non-con win and 2 PAC-12 wins. But they were still an enjoyable team to watch! There were 3 incredibly close losses where Arizona State looked like a team that could blow things up! I’m excited to see where first year HC Kenny Dillingham takes the program, and they have some very fun games versus Texas State and Wyoming in 2024’s non-con, and - selfishly - I am very excited to see them against the Wildcats. Lots to do in the offseason and a tough schedule ahead make for a busy Sun Devil crew. Watch out for sunburn, Big 12 bros!
What a stylish season for ASU. For the first time in 5 years, ASU had a white helmet option to go along with the gold and maroon. My least favorite suit was a product of the ASU’s earlier uniform refresh worn in Week 2 against Oklahoma State. It’s an older suit, has that knit sweater look (which some people love, but I don’t). The color scheme would have looked great using the new suits. I do like the Arizona Flag design on the chest though, it’s one of the things I missed about the new template. Speaking of the new template, it’s a sleeker design. They removed the large subliminal flag on the chest, most of the striping, and much of the other chest clutter. They added a large pitchfork on the leg (a move I go back and forth on), but the whole refresh seemed to have “simplify” in mind. Which works great! ASU is known best for its color scheme. That’s why my favorite suit works so well. Yellow/Maroon/Yellow, sparky on the lid. A great color combo that really just feels like the Sun Devils. The simplified uniform really does great. My second pick has to be the White/White/White, utilizing the sweet new white shell, and my third pick is probably between the White/White/Maroon suit worn in Week 5 and their “Ghost Story” uniform from Week 9. The black/yellow and white all combine for a fantastic alternative. Not very valuable as an every-day wear, but a nice suit for special occasions. The black pitchfork looks exemplary, and you can really see the Arizona flag on the side of these.
Well, everyone! That’s it! I can’t believe the 2023 season is over. 18 damn teams’ seasons and uniforms reviewed. I hope you had as much fun as I did! I want to thank u/CockADoodleBOOM and u/holytrolly_ for providing me inspiration. I appreciate the opportunity to continue the tracker, and I'm excited to again next year! Over the offseason, I’ll post a team specific uniform ranking, as well my “2023 Uniform Awards” sometime soon. If you have any questions about the tracker or a team, feel free to PM or comment, and leave an upvote! I appreciate every single one of you, from the constant commenters to the casual lurkers. Until next season, in America’s most exciting football conference!

2024.01.30 00:47 Eldouchebagerino Adelaide Uprising 2024 - Tournament Write Up

Adelaide Uprising 2024
Uprising this year was great fun, I was really looking forward to it and had a pretty clear set goal of going for best in faction for Tyranids. Prior to the event I was ranked 2nd in ITC South Pacific for Nids, but would need a top 25 placement to pip 1st place. So, with that in mind, I was gonna go as far as I could.
List:
Old One Eye, Deathleaper, Neurotyrant (Hunting Grounds),Winged Prime (Neuronode), Winged Prime (Chameleonic), 2x10 Gargoyles, Biovore, Pyrovore, Ripper Swarm, Exocrine, Malaceptor, 2x Mawloc, 2x6 Melee Warriors, 1x6 Von Ryan Leapers, 2x Neurolictor
The only change to my previous iteration of this list was Old One Eye replacing a 2nd Exocrine, with the point difference being a 2nd ripper replaced with an average enhancement. Old One Eye is a cheap tough lil bugger, who swings at S14, which is something a bug player can only dream of. Plus he is tanky enough that he normally requires a substantial response to take down, which I can then respond to.
Game 1 - Todd Mark - Dark Angels Unforgiven Task Force
Initially I was a tad worried about this matchup, DA love being battle shocked as far as I was aware and boy do I love battle shocking. But at the end of the day, a terminator who cant use AoC, is a dead terminator in my books. DA took first turn, moved a big thick brick of Deathwing Terminators into the centre, with the Lion nearby for support. With that I had to respond, Old One Eye and a unit of warriors moved forward, with the Exocrine and Malaceptor picking up 4 of the terminators. Old One Eye sadly had the unfortunate duty of making the first charge and batting the heroic intervention from the Lion, but OOE was never going to get through many marines. The important piece was the warriors, who made it in. OOE valiantly took 24 damage, exploded and took one of my warriors with him. The warriors then struck, battle shocking the terminators and scoping the 6 remaining marines. From there I focussed on gumming up the Lion, whilst my Mawlocs and other Warriors pushed through into his backlines. With strong primary control I kept the pressure on and came away with the win.
Final score: 91-43
Old One Eye kill count: 1 friendly Tyranid Warrior
Game 2 - Tyler Walsh - Necrons - Canoptek Court
Another pretty scary matchup, the durability of this Necron list will always be a challenge, luckily only 1 C’tan, unlike some of the 5 C’tan lists present in Adelaide. 3x6 Wraiths with Immortal support and plenty of mission play. The primary mission was The Ritual, so I knew it would be a very interesting game, with battle shock playing a major part. Going first I aimed to setup some strong staging areas and threaten the midfield and try to pick up some Acanthrites and Scarabs. I found myself in a challenging spot in my 2nd turn, with both of my secondaries linked to taking the objective my opponent had just placed, however I realised a flaw in my movement after moving OOE and Deathleaper up to go on a Technomancer killing adventure, I noticed if I charged in, he could get more OC on the important objective, thus I would score a 0 for secondaries. That couldn’t happen, but my poor named bugs were already in position, so I was forced to leave them to their fate. My Shadows popped in my opponents T2, shocking all but 2 units, reducing his ability to create objectives and score secondaries, though not his ability to kill OOE and DL, not before Deathleaper managed to take a Technomancer with him. The game was looking comfortably mine, until a T4 Capture Enemy Outpost draw from my opponent, where he could in one charge move, take my home, take one of my primary objectives and a 4th quarter for Engage. In the fight phase I use the Surprise Assault stratagem to force a battleshock. The Wraiths + Technomancer fail the 6+ test and I get a 15 pt swing in my favour. This locks in the result for the bugs, but it could have gone either way had that test not failed.
Final score: 88-71
Old One Eye kill count: 1x3 Captek Acanthrites
Round 3 - Alex Englezos - Ad Mech - Skitarii Hunter Cohort
Rematch against Alex, after he won our round 1 match at a recent GT, we even got the identical mission, Priority Targets with Hidden Supplies. Alex is such a talented Ad Mech player and his list is so versatile, with 3x10 Flamer Pteraxii, 2x5 shoot and scoot Pteraxii, somewhere between 70 Skitarii, 4 boats, 3x3 ponies, a set of characters, some infiltrators and a Callidus.
Alex got first turn and promptly pinned me in my deployment zone, as any self respecting horde army player should, whilst working on his fixed secondaries of BEL and DTH. I had an uneventful T1, trying to free myself and kill as much as I could, with varying levels of success. ALex hit me hard T2, 2x10 flamer birds hitting me fairly hard, removing a warrior unit I had thought was safer than it was. I wasn’t feeling confident at this point, but knew at the very least, he had put a lot of his army in front of me. A nice overwatch from my Neurotyrant scooped half a Pteraxii unit, with Shadows also helping me by hitting a few of the units that had pushed up on me. My turn was solid, clearing a lot of the pressure and I was able to secure a 2nd objective to get those 10s I needed on primary. T3 I drew Capture Enemy Outpost and Storm Hostile, my remaining Warrior unit knew what it had to do. There was a unit of Skitarii with Kyria Draxus posted up on the top floor of a ruin on Alex’s home objective, I roll my advance, its a 1. That would give me a long charge, with only 1 CP in my pocket. I re-roll the advance into a 5, ok cooking with gas. The boys run out, now I need a 5” charge without CP to have a chance of making it onto the objective, but I also needed to kill the Skitarii to not have my OC halved or have the unit pile into control range. I roll a 10 for the charge. 4 Warriors and the Prime shred the unit and make it to the objective. The score has evened out at 40-40 going into Alex’s T4. He is consistent with his fixed secondaries and maxes primary on T5, but a few turns of a low scoring DTH and BEL gets his score to 94. I manage 2 turns of high scoring secondaries and a maxed primary to get the 100 on the final turn as we run out of time. A really tense game against an amazing opponent. Definitely a game I will never forget.
Final Score: 100-94
Old One Eye kill count: 8 Skitarii Vanguard, 1 Skorpius Dunerider, an amount of Pteraxii. Also he lived through the whole game, whoa crazy.
Round 4 - Dean Sinnbeck - World Eaters
Angron, 1 unit of Eightbound, 3 of Exalted, 2 10 man Berserker units, both led by a Master of Execution, Lord Invocatus, Kharn, a Rhino and some Jakhals. Ahhh scary god please don’t let them go first, ahhhhh they went first here they come. Ok, I had my VRL’s infiltrated to stop his scout moves, so at least I don’t get hit by absolutely everything, just Angron and a 10 man make it in. its Purge the Foe and Dean drew No Prisoners so he is keen to do some violence. Both his units charge my screen of gargoyles, with a play for the big scary MOE to pile into OOE and kill him, followed by Angron piling into my Malaceptor and doing some scary stuff. But then! My deployed VRLs heroic for free into the berserkers, pop the precision strat and take down the MOE, nor more fights first or Berserker Glaive. The Gargoyles go to a better place, Angron bears down on the Malaceptor and somehow, my big beautiful brain bug lives to fight another day. Ok, thats a great start. A failed Angron battleshock triggered by a Neurolictor gives my next turn a clear plan: Kill everything in front of me. And the plan works, shooting + combat from a Malaceptor, Deathleaper and unit of Warriors brings down the scary red man, with my other warriors tearing the Berserkers apart. Good start on my weakest primary mission. Start of T2, no triple 6 on the blessing roll, despite a handful of single re-rolls and full re-rolls from the enhancement on the 2nd MOE. Then Shadows, only the Rhino and Jakhals remain un-shook. Some very scared Eightbound advance up the field, but with the threat of my reactive moves, they elect to chance some 9” charges into my warriors. Thankfully the charges fail and on my 2nd turn, my warriors kill every Eightbound on the table. I have a dominant position and am feeling confident, just as Angron comes back and begins a rampage through the table. The remaining berserkers make a big impact and despite only a handful of WE units being alive, Dean was doing so well to get back into the game. Some strong secondaries go his way and I have lost the ability to get a kill for Primary, let along kill more. The game came down to the secondary draws and this wild game came down the the closest margin.
Final score: 86-85 to the Tyranids
Old One Eye kill count: most of a Rhino :(
Round 5 - Nathan Bailey - Aeldari
Wayleaper, Bike Farseer, Spiritseer, Avatar, 10 Wraithguard, 1 Nightspinner, 1x5 Rangers, 2x5 Spiders, 1x5 Spectres, 1 D-Cannon and a cute little Player + Troupe Master package in a Falcon for wound re-rolls. Scary eldar stuff. Eldar took first turn and the Avatar took the centre, with Wraithguard moving to a flank, the Nightspinner failed to kill my Biovore (which I forgot to reserve oops) and I responded with a Gargoyle screen to cover 2 objectives and a failed 4” charge with my VRLs into some spiders. So what do you do when there are a bunch of scary eldar about to get into a strong position and your next turn needs to be big, pop Shadows baby lets do it. Everything except the Avatar and the Skyrunner failed, giving Nathan a 0 on primary and leaving him vulnerable to my T2. Regardless, the Avatar marched up, using fate dice to make a charge into my Malaceptor and promptly cutting it in half. I was ok with this, as it did deliver the Avatar into a position from which I could engage it. On my turn, a combination of Mawloc mortals and warriors/OOE in combat take the big guy down. Whilst my other warrior unit engaged the Wraithguard, gumming them up and taking a few down. I kept the pressure up with battleshock test and kept denying pts while I could. Very close game and definitely one my most challenging.
Final score on the day: 75-63
Old One Eye kill count: 1 friendly Warrior from an explosion.
Yellow Card: I made a mistake in this game, which was raised that evening. Some of the TOs had been hanging out during our game, keen to see how a Vanguard Nids list was dealing with things at the top table. On my opponents T2 I rapid-ingressed a Mawloc to hit the Avatar with some MW, then at the end of his turn, I placed the Mawloc back into reserves using the Invisible Hunter stratagem, the brough both Mawlocs in during my next turn to hit the Avatar with another volley of MW. I thought the stratagem could target 2x Vanguard units OR 1 non-Vanguard unit, whilst it actually can target 2x Vanguard units of 1 Tyranid INFANTRY unit. No monsters allowed. I had a good chat with the TOs, as he was present at the table he acknowledged that the additional MW the Avatar took was unlikely to change the outcome, as the Warriors were overkilling it and OOE hadn’t fought yet, but, regardless it was my mistake and I was glad to be called out. I always try to play the best, most accurate game I can and I can’t make mistakes like that, regardless of their impact on the game. I was happy to take whatever the penalty was for this, which in the end was a yellow card and a 15pt deduction to my score for the game. I caught up with Nathan the following morning and had a good chat, no hard feelings from him which was great.
Final score for round 5: 60-63 loss
Round 6 - Lance Glover - Ultramarines - Vanguard Spearhead
At this stage, my misplay in the previous round hadn’t been raised, so I was the top seed of the top 8 cut, going into Lance on stream. Lance brought Marneus Calgar and the Aggressor brick, 6 Lascannon Centurions, 1x6 Plasma Inceptors, 2x3 Inceptors, Uriel and some Bladeguard, Sneaky lone-op Infiltrators, 3x5 scouts and some other small scoring units. I had done some research into Vanguard Marines, but hadn’t had any experience yet. Lance was an awesome opponent, a really nice guy so I knew we would have a fun game either way. Going first I was able to scoop a unit of scouts, tie down his Centurions and lock down a 12 on primary for T2. I kept pushing my scoring advantage, denying primary and giving my opponent hard choices. But boy are Inceptors hard to plan around, I found myself going in circles trying to screen them. Lance had also taken fixed secondaries of Bring it Down and BEL, which I tried to negate as much as possible, though my monsters didn't last long against the teleporting Centurions. This proved enough as I finished day 2 with a 6-0 record.
Final score: 68-47
Old One Eye kill count: 2/3 Inceptors… keep up the good work big fella….
So ended the day 6-0 and top seeded with the highest opponent win % which was being used as a tiebreaker. Then the TO’s reached out to me regarding my misplay in round 5, I was happy to take whatever the penalty was, the round 5 loss pushed me to a 5-1, but I still would have been included in the top 8 cut for round 6, so I would remain in the top 4 for day 3. Still everything to play for. The way the event was being run, the winners in the semi final would be locked in for 1st and 2nd place, those that lost the semi would drop down and not be guaranteed a podium placement. So for me, Round 7 would be the most important round of the tournament and a must win.
Round 7 - Rhys Cunningham - Sisters
Rhys brought a very strong Sisters list: 10 sisters with all the guns, Diologus and Palatine, Triumph, Vahl with 3 Paragons, 2 Rhinos, 3x10 Arco Flagellants, 2x10 Repentia, 2 Exorcists, 2x5 Seraphim, and some CrusadeDeath cult scoring units. Very strong list and I would need to ensure I don’t get overwhelmed. The mission was Priority Targets, my plan was to deny primary, give my opponent 5s where possible, try to reduce secondary scoring then windmill slam a Shadows on my opponents T5 to reduce his end of game scoring. Keep engaging his army and forcing him to use Miracle dice, so they wasn’t a giant pool come T5 for him to use on his BS tests. Also keeping my Neurotyrant and Deathleaper alive to make those test as nasty as possible.
I got 1st turn, sent in my VRLs to engage some Arco Flagellants and movement block the majority of his army, whilst also drawing the dream combo of Extend Battle Lines and Secure No-Man's Land. He pushed forward scoring points and putting both Exorcists into OOE, OOE took 6 wounds, then healed to almost full come his next turn, go Old One Eye! I keep up the primary denial plan, giving Rhys a 5, scoring another 10 secondary pts with Area Denial and No Prisoners, using my warriors to pick up the rest of the Arco Flagellants and also block up the centre again. Rhys strikes back, clearing the centre scoring 5 on Assassinate. At this stage there is no clean way for me to give him another 5, so I resort to movement blocking with gargoyles and scoring 8 between Cleanse and BEL. Rhys redraws a secondary on T3, replacing Tempting Target with Cleanse and scoring 5 on that as well as 5 on Secure No Man's Land. I throw out a battleshock test in the fight phase to try and reduce an unit of Cleansing Arco Flagellants OC to 0, to reduce both of those secondaries, unfortunately he passed the 8+ test. T4 I score 10 on primary, send my last unit of warriors out to pick up some Seraphim and move block Rhys, whilst scoring 5 on Storm Hostile and 3 on Engage. This brings my score to 30 on primary and 36 on secondaries. We have 15 mins left in the round and we both want to play 5 turns of the game, as there is so much end game scoring potential. Rhys clears my warriors, scoring 5 for DTH and not scoring Capture Enemy Outpost, instead holding it for T5. This brings Rhys’ score to 25 on Primary and 27 on Secondaries. The TO calls the game with 1 minute remaining and the extremely volatile potential of T5 is never explored. No Shadows, no scoring, I manage to take the semi final and secure my place in the top 2.
Final score: 76-62
Old One Eye kill count: Another friendly Tyranid Warrior god come on OOE please stop exploding.
Round 8 - Brodie Middleton - Ultramarines Vanguard
I was pretty exhausted, I really put a lot into Round 7 and I was flagging. But I had done it, I had locked in top 2, best in faction Tyranids was locked down. I did everything I set out to do and more. So I had nothing to lose, lets go top table.
Brodie brought a different style of Vanguard list, but wow was it incredible on the table. Calgar and the boys, 6 Grav Centurions, 2x6 Inceptors (1 Plasma, 1 Bolt), Lone op Infiltrators, 2x5 Scouts, 2x Ballistus Dreads, 1x5 Assault Intercessors with jump packs, Lieutenant with Combi Weapon.
Ok so I had nothing to lose, but also from deployment I also clearly wasn't 100% focussed. One of my warriors units was deployed within charge range of the Calgar and the boys, Brodie goes first, rolls a 6 for the unit's advance and here they come. Big mistake by me. Calgary goes in and cleans out the unit, but at least he was right there and ready for my slap back. OOE and my second warrior team goes in, after the victrix get picked up by my shooting. Sadly, fairly poor performance by the warriors, only killing 2 Aggressors and OOE killing nothing. BUT, the unit was stretched out with characters on either end and I based every model resulting in the unit being lost to coherency, only the characters remaining. But I expended a lot to get to that point and exposed a lot of my army. I know from here on out it would be up-hill and Brodie is such an excellent player and would do everything to keep me out of the game.
And that is just what he did, very skillfully dismantled my army and kept up his very consistent scoring.
Playing against Brodie was a great experience, he is a legend from the UK and AUS tournament scene and has so many GT wins under his belt. I learned so much and was so impressed with how efficiently he played the game, whilst still communicating clearly and being a very friendly opponent. That game was definitely winnable for me, but not on that day, not when I am not playing at 100% and when Brodie was. A great experience and a totally deserved win for Mr Middleton.
Final score: 55-97
Old One Eye kill count: ….. Nothing.
And that was it! I finished 2nd overall out of 202 players, scoring Best in Faction for Tyranids, The updated ITC ranks for South Pacific scored me at 1st for Tyranids and a score that would slot me into 5th globally.
I was very happy with my list, the Exocrine was very underwhelming, but it's the threat of a long range decently powerful gun that is valuable, for 135pts its still so valuable. Old One Eye, hero of my heart, was not very successful in the killing department. Overall he only just killed more opponent models than my own. BUT! He is so tanky, he took 4 units of Necron Immortal shooting and barely blinked, he got shot for 2 turns by 2 Exorcists and barely stumbled. He demanded a real amount of damage to take him down and that meant I could strike back with my fast moving infantry. I don’t know if I would keep him in my list, but he did exactly what I wanted him to. Mawlocs rock, Warriors rock, All the sneaky boys rock.
I am disappointed in myself that I made a misplay in round 5, but glad that it was caught and glad my opponent and I could talk about it and we were both happy with how it was resolved. I’m better for that whole experience.
Big thanks to my mates who came with me who helped in both game prep and keeping my head level throughout the whole time. Wouldn’t have made it without you guys. As well as everyone who was cheering me on from my home town.
Thanks to anyone who read all the way to the end! <3
