Disclaimer: Not about solo player who plays solo, but rogue solo player in full team match.
I've been playing this game for over 300 hours now, and I've noticed a recurring issue that's been frustrating both myself and other players.
On Dif 9, it's possible for a single player to solo the entire mission with certain Stratagems and loadout, while the other three players are left cleaning up the mess.
While this player may be skilled, their actions ultimately require the other three players to cover for them, clearing waves and dealing with reinforcements. This is possible because enemy spawns have a cooldown and occur in specific locations on the map.
While it might be tempting to tell the solo player to just do it themselves, this would likely result in a not so much happy time for other 3 players.
The problem arises when everyone tries to emulate this playstyle, equipping light armor, neglecting anti-heavy weapons, ignoring enemy reinforcements, and failing to cut patrols. This inevitably leads to a team wipe situation as enemy forces eventually stack up and overwhelm them, with players blaming each other:
"I could solo this if the others weren't so incompetent!"
While the game is already challenging enough, I believe that 4 person teamwork and tactical play should be rewarded, not penalized. Players who prioritize their own enjoyment while leaving others to struggle should face increased difficulty.
Specifically, I propose that when a player disobeys orders and runs off solo, the team's patrol and reinforcement spawns should be reduced, while the solo player receives two additional spawns.
This would encourage players to stick together and work as a team, rather than prioritizing individual glory.

I’m currently reading around OxyContin so was looking for podcasts around the matter. Saw a RedHanded episode and remembered that I enjoyed listening to some of their episodes from 2018/2019.
I barely managed to get through the 15 min crash course of the history of “opium”. Felt like a school presentation where someone skirts around the around the main topic by bombarding you with useless facts. How does the fact that the Queen sent her cousins to an institution has any relevancy to the Sacklers? Or the formation of the Republic of China?
I felt the podcast frequently went off tangent. I couldn’t figure the tone of the podcast, it felt too light hearted from the get go, describing Richard Sackler (I believe?) as a “Baddie” then stating horrific facts and cases relating to the drug. It felt really disjointed, somewhat disrespectful to the gravity of the situation.
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t be allowed a level of black humour or lightheartedness to horrific events/people. There’s an element where doing so demeans/discredits the people responsible for said events. But to me it felt like the hosts were overly trying to be with the times. And as someone in their mid 20’s, I felt the language use was completely out of place.
Is it just a one off or has the show gone down hill? Any recommendations in this podcast or other similar podcasts? I’ve enjoyed listening to The Trial ( although it is produced by the daily mail), prefer podcasts relating to the uk as I have a better understanding of the criminal justice system here.

The World

The world of Mithlasia is an epic fantasy world quite different from out own. Dragons dominate the landscape, while young dragons terrorize the wilderness, elder dragons subjugate entire cities. The wilderness is full of strange and fantastic creatures, with an abundance of megafauna such as shelltusks, ground sloths, swordtooths and more. The night sky is dominated by the Shadow Moon, a massive celestial object which eclipses the sun daily at noon. Wizards cast spells powered by light, using crystals and prisms to create the colors they need for their sorcery. The world is ancient and full of danger, making it ripe for adventure!
This is a setting I have been working on for a while, and one that I am pretty proud of. It has its own magic system(s), cultures, pantheons, cosmology, wildlife and ecosystems.

The Game

The game will follow a standard DnD-type formula. You will play as an adventurer, motivated in one way or another to travel, explore, fight evil/kill monsters, etc. I like to run games which focus on immersion, I do my best to make the world feel like a living place, and that your characters are a real part of it. I like to work with players so that their character has some kind of on-going personal story which I can incorporate into the game. I want the players to have time to roleplay conversations and interactions with each other and NPCs that help to build that sense of immersion, even if they aren't completely relevant to whatever the given quest/adventure might be.
I also like to focus a bit on realism (though I try to not be overbearing about it). I'm going to make you track encumbrance, food, arrows, etc. Injuries matter (part of why I like GURPS!)

Logistics

The game will be run in the evenings, after 9 PM EST. Day is TBD but we can figure out what works for the group. The game will use Discord for voice and text communication, and Foundry as the VTT (you dont need an account or anything). It is also really helpful if you can install GCS, a character building software for GURPS which makes the whole process 100x easier.

2024.05.14 06:30 EpochSkate_HeshAF420 I don't understand why but I find Mass Effect 2 to rather boring/unengaging

title says it all, really.
I got the legendary edition in the steam sale & fell in love with ME1, while some of the dialogue could be a bit cringe worthy I had an absolute blast with the combat, looting and exploration granted by the end I barely even bothered looking at the equipment menu.
I cannot place it exactly but 2 just is not landing with me for some reason, I am not a huge fan of how the combat feels especially since a lot of the abilities seem to have been nerfed to the point of being next to useless, thought I'd switch from soldier to infiltrator and oh boy was that a mistake, stuck using weapons I do not really enjoy apart from the sniper, my abilities don't seem to do much and I feel kinda squishy, lesson learned.
I'm also not very big on what I feel is a pretty heavy dead space influence on ME2, something about how it all couples together with the mass effect style of exploration just turns me off of the game rather quickly, however I do enjoy scanning planets & the revamped upgrade system but it all starts falling away from me as soon as the combat starts, I don't find the game particularly difficult per-se at least not like DS/souls-like difficulty however pretty much every combat encounter seems to consist of a mish-mash of really light but surprisingly high dps enemies with a couple of super sponges thrown in to prolong the combat as much as possible.
I'll definitely finish the game, at some point, however after the excitement I had to play ME2 after finishing 1 I'm now a bit apprehensive about playing 3 once I'm finished. if the combat and story are just a direct continuation of what is going on in ME2 I'll be kinda disappointed honestly.
I should mention I skipped these games entirely at release, I was not huge on dialogue/narrative focused games as a kid/young teenager and especially not space exploration games but I have always heard good things about the original trilogy, especially 2 and I guess I'm a bit sad that I don't (yet?) see or understand what it is that makes this game so many people's favorite of the series. sorry for the rambling.

I feel like the techs don't always get the love they deserve and many people view them as the lesser nominations but I'm actually usually the most excited for these nominations more than anything else. I'm gonna toss the shorts in here as well. I'm mostly sticking to nominations but if you wanna toss in a win, go ahead.
For the more recent ones, I think All the Stars by Kendrick Lamar and SZA is probably one of the strongest nominations in Original Song so far this century. I'm a dyed in the wool Lady Gaga fan but I've never been huge on Shallow nor A Star is Born for many reasons. I'm of the opinion that getting Lady Gaga in your movie to basically just play the girlfriend is kind of a waste. If anything I think she gets less to do that in previous versions. The song itself is fine but I've never been one for slower songs or ballads. Hell if you're gonna give an Oscar to a slow building emotional Lady Gaga song, she should've won for Til It Happens to You from The Hunting Ground. We also would've been spared Diane Warren bulldozing her way into this category every year. That aside, All the Stars is probably one of the better songs from that movie and soundtrack. It encapsulates the themes of the film in a way that feels direct and not just like some song they slapped onto the credits. The songs in the sequel are much stronger and are incorporated into the film better, but I would've preferred to see All the Stars win.
To go further back, I've always loved the costumes from Dreamgirls and it was my choice to win. That being said, this is probably the strongest line-up we've had in this category in a long ass time. I can't think of any film except maybe The Queen that didn't have some costumes that wowed me. I might've replaced The Queen with Pan's Labyrinth but outside of that, this was a pretty stacked category. For me though, Dreamgirls was the obvious winner here. There's a delicate balance when doing a musical set in the past because you don't want it to just read as a period piece but you also want the costumes to aide in the theatricality as well. There are musical films that do this very well (Chicago, Hairspray, Mary Poppins) and ones that do not (Les Miserables being the big one). Dreamgirls was such a slick production overall and the costumes not only pulled from their inspiration but told a story with them. I could tell which Dream was mean to wear which costume.
To go even further back, everything for A Star is Born with Judy Garland was a top tier nomination especially below the line. It's probably the best studio system musical that era produced and it's a shame it won zilch. How do you not even nominate the cinematography? I mean c'mon! But if we're talking about actual BTL nominations, it's gotta be that art direction nom now known as production design. I often point to this film as an example of older musicals that aren't just light fluff and I think it really did spur something because we did get kinda gritty and more complex musicals for a while there. The production design aides in this because while the musical numbers are bright and vibrant, there's an inherent darkness and slight otherworldly quality that fills me with a sense of dread. As much fun as we're having, you know it's not gonna last for long. The rest of the film is also exquisitely decorated and designed. It's the kind of film that feels like a period piece even though it's not meant to be. It so perfectly encapsulates the mood of the era and that underlying anxiety that was a strong undercurrent in the 1950's. Sure things are fine now, but for how long? The costumes, the song and the score are top notch too. It's easily one of the best films of the 1950's, if not the 1900's. Fight me.

A few days ago I played a game of Bolt Action with another player who has a Japanese army. He had an IJA Grenadier Squad with 3 Light Mortars; whenever I would zero in on them with my Heavy Mortar, he would move them.
He was using his light mortars to put pins on my Regular T34/85. I thought that him moving them would reset/end the zeroing in but he didn't believe so. I looked in the rulebook and while I found that light mortars that move more than 2 inches lose zeroing in, we weren't sure if that applied to a Grenadier squad with Light Mortars.
I'm assuming it does reset Grenadiers but I wanted to ask the knowledgeable people here about it before we make a ruling at the next game we play. Thanks!

I’ve dropped another 100+ hours into Fallout 4 since the show, and since launch across Xbox and later PC I have 1,200+ hours total. Without looking up tonight I gave my wife directions through downtown Boston to get to Mass Fusion. She wasn’t wrapping the main quest, she just wanted a bobble head for her elaborate Sanctuary build.
Since I feel like I’ve done the vanilla quests too many times from too many angles, and looking for something that can make big changes to my game, especially from an RPG perspective.
I tried this myself, and had a functioning load order with 500ish mods covering changes to the dialogue, loads of new DLC sized quest mods, everything I could load into the workshop menu, with some texture, environment, and weather mods thrown in for spice.
Everything was going great as I was RPing an escaped gunner conscript building up Red Rocket into a safe base for himself, prepping for the inevitable Gunner attack somewhere in the commonwealth. I’d built a large warehouse (warehouse extended is fantastic) wrapping around the Red Rocket, with a loading dock home to my power armor and crafting stations, an indoor market area not dissimilar from the market in Rivet City, when I saw my wife using settlement mods I didn’t have because they were only on Bethesda and not on Nexus.
I downloaded those mods and brought them into Vortex, and that was the straw that broke the camels back. Started getting immediate CTD’s. Not wanting to give them up, I started reviewing crash logs and trying to find other issues I could fix while keeping the new ones. But after several hours of troubleshooting, updating settings, downloading drivers I could only get my save up and running with 12-15 FPS… in an untouched Sanctuary.
So I’m starting fresh. The role play is a Gunner conscript escapee trying to survive in the wasteland, constantly looking over his shoulder, before being brought into the Minutemen and deciding to do something more noble.
The foundation I was to build on is the following:
From that foundation I want to build out a new Commonwealth wasteland story for my self. I love building the bones of settlement and then using Sim Settlements to bring them to life.
Graphics and texture mods are nice, but if grab any I want to keep them light so I don’t tank my performance. I would like to use all the faction overhaul mods, and maybe something like War in the commonwealth, but I don’t know if that part of my prior issue.
Basically looking for mods that change the wasteland so I don’t think I know every ghoul waiting for me at a train station, and play nice together. I’m intrigued by the hunkered mod and “people live in series”.
I plan on doing America Rising 2, but what are a few other large quest line mods that I can include on this round? For my settlements I will use vanilla extensions and mods with decorated assets and prefab structures as much as I can. I don’t place every object, but I do build around a theme.
I prefer lore friendly, and I don’t need all the guns from every shooter of the past 10 years. Add one from other Fallout games or polish on what is already there are good for me.
I’ve had bad experiences with collections, but if there is a good one out there I’m not opposed to it.
Long story short I am trying to make an experience where I build a settlement for 12 hours, and then need a break from that and go in an adventure that is new to me. Because war never changes, but mod lists can.

I reseated my graphics card, and I know it is on due to the light on the top. Everything looks good in the tower. Unfortunately, the whole thing will not display. I’m unsure of what it is because the graphics card seems to be on, and seated probably. There is no red light indicating something is wrong. It just won’t display. What is there to do?

So, this has been going on for 5 years and I'm reaching the point of explosion!!!!!
I'm (35) married to my husband (55)
He has a son (22) who has just gotten married to his wife (20). His son is a narcissist and has been that way since the day I met him. He is very talented at a number of things (motocross, golf, etc.) And he is a hard worker. By all outward appearances he's a good person and can be very kind at times.
The issue is that he is very spoiled and has always been given the best of the best. ($1,200 phones, $7,000 dirtbikes, the nicest clothes and shoes and blah blah blah)
His mother is loaded and buys him cars, clothes, coach backpacks, $400 shoes for no reason, spends $2,000+ on his birthdays and Christmases and just bows down to his every want and need
I was raised with the power getting shut off every 3 months bc my single mother struggled to keep the lights on. I shopped (and still shop) at thrift stores and I've NEVER cared about having flashy expensive THINGS. There is more to life than stuff.
Anyway... his son will always say things like "where did you get that shirt? Wish?" He will pick on me about my hobbies. Pretty much saying the things I enjoy doing are lame.
If I started talking about politics or any kind of REAL issues going on in the world he would dismiss what I'm saying and say that I'm a conspiracy theorist (meanwhile, his world revolves around tic-tok and video games)
After he got married things have gotten much worse. Keep in mind, his wife is 20 and I'm 35.
He will compare how she looks to how I look. We went on a boat trip and she wore a bathing suit while I wore shorts and a tank top. I'm not fat by any means, but I would LOVE to lose around 15lbs and have the flat little tummy I once did.
His wife is 4 inches taller than me and has huge boobs and a completely different body style. I never once compared myself to her or envied her in any way, but he will say things to me like "how much do weigh?" And then ask her how much she weighs...and then say "how do you guys look so different when your only 5-10lbs difference" he makes me so self conscious and insecure comparing me to someone who is 15 years younger than me FOR NO REASON EXCEPT TO HURT ME.
She says things to me too.
We were playing pickle ball today. First time I ever played and I was doing so-so
My team was behind and she hollered out to my team mate "do you want me to come out there and take her place" (talking about me)
If I try to have a discussion with her about anything she will find some way to argue with Mr and tell me I'm wrong and it's impossible to have any kind of real diologue with her UNLESS IT IS ABOUT HER AND HER INTERESTS
It gets worse
Me and my husband have a 4 year old daughter who was born with a cleft pallette in the roof of her mouth and she's had surgeries and is taking speech therapy and is doing great
Well, my stepson and his wife just had a baby (5 months)
My stepson (in front of like 6 people/family members) said to me "our son is perfect, what's the matter, why can't you have a perfect baby too"? THAT IS HIS FUKKIN SISTER!!!!!
I race motocross with them every weekend. It's my husband's son/family and we see them often
LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE TIME WE SEE THEM ONE (OR BOTH) SAY SOMETHING CRUEL TO ME.
I'm a very encouraging person. My stepsons wife gained a lot of weight after her pregnancy and when she started losing the weight I'd tell her "you look so pretty today" or "you look great"
I have TRIED to lead by example and treat them how I want to me treated.
They NEVER tell me "good job" or say anything nice/positive to me. They feed off of hurting and picking on other people to make themselves feel better. They talk shut constantly and I'm nothing like that and don't want to be.
I smile and pretend things dont hurt me so that I don't rock the boat. I don't stand up for myself and don't even know how to.
Normally when I'm around toxic people like this I avoid them and cut them out of my life, but I'm at a loss for ideas and don't know how to move forward.
Any advice or encouragement would be most welcome. I've talked to my husband but he doesn't know how to handle it and doesn't want to talk to his son because his son picks on him too and my husband doesn't seem to care. I don't think he understands why I am so hurt/upset by it in the first place.
Mt husband always says "he was just joking" or "he didn't mean it"....THE GASLIGHTING IS UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!

Platforms: Game Boy Advanced/DS/DSi
Genre: Action, sidescroller, robot/mech/creature(?)
Estimated year of release: 2006-2012 (roughly)
Graphics/art style: 2D/pixelated side scroller. Very grey besides main character. The closest game style I can think of is Mega Man ZX in character size and pixel style, but the character's designs themselves don't look similar. The game felt made for an older audience, as in not a game like Kid Chameleon that has a "cuter" artstyle? Kind of hard to explain but it didn't have that kind of look to it

I swear the colors were like light pink, green, and possibly blue? A game called Metal Mutant has a VERY similar character function as to how I remember the character in my game, I had to check and see if there was another in the series on handheld because it fits really close to my description. If Metal Mutant looked a lot more like Mega Man ZX in scale and sprite size and released past 2006 it would be the game I'm thinking of which is very confusing

Notable gameplay mechanics: Character that changes between different types depending on needed situation, such as a whip for obstacles, or a tankier body for needed defense. I can't remember a single enemy which is annoying, but I still believe it was somewhat of an action game like the Mega Man series (don't think its that franchise tho, not from what I could find)

Hey so I have an ASUS gaming laptop from 2009 and I’ve been having some issues with it. It was plugged in and shut off randomly mid game and now the battery won’t charge in any working outlets and the LED light isn’t turning on showing that the laptop is charging… I also tried a different adapter and that works with my laptop and and that didn’t work either. So is this a battery issue? Maybe a motherboard issue? Am I able to buy some new parts and fix it myself rather than someone else charging me to fix it?
Extra info I think my be helpful: - it’s really loud while it’s running. - it gets hot while I’m using it. - slow start up. - when I was able to turn it on while it was plugged in, sometimes it would shut off a couple times before it started up.

The description of the older man "long white hair braided at the nape" [p.7, Scribner] certainly seems to suggest it is Elster, described in Ch. 1 as a man "with silvery hair, as always, was braided down into a short ponytail." If it is definitely them, what does it mean they attended a museum show together? Anything?
This is not the first Delillo novel to open with a scene where a movie, and anonymous characters' responses to watching it, is central to the narrative - Players opens with a movie being shown on a plane that is basically a silent movie of a terrorist machine-gun attack on waspy golfers, only accompanied by a pianist (yes a pianist) in the airplane bar filling in the suspense with improvised show tunes - and it is not the first to open with an examination of an art installation - Underworld, after the fantastic baseball game section - opens at Klara Sax's airplane bomber art installation commune. But this opening seems to introduce two characters obliquely, and of course only if you've paid close attention to the description of Elster's hair could you think back to it being him, perhaps.
"The nature of the film permitted total concentration and also depended on it." "The less there was to see, the harder he looked, the more he saw." [p.5, Scribner]
Q:Who is this person watching and why should we care?
Q: Did the opening sequence provide you any insight other than , perhaps, confusion? Something other than "what the hell did I just read?" What? Does your reaction to the opening sequence change when you know (if you did before this post) that the Psycho installation was and is real?
Moving on to Chapter 1 [p. 17, Scribner], we learn that we are on Day 10 of a 12-day period of time that relates the initial relationship between Elster and Finley. Finley, who is probably in his early to mid-30s and 73-year-old Elster are spending time at Elster's house in the desert to record a one-take movie of Elster's testimony of what it was like to serve in an administration that went to war under less than honest circumstances.
Our narrator is Jim Finley, a documentary filmmaker who has made exactly one film about Jerry Lewis's telethon appearances - Lewis, a "rampaging comic" to whom Elster would merely be a "straight man." [p.27] Elster, who Finley also describes as "not a man who might make space for even the gentlest correction," [p.22] is a non-political theorist being brought in to an administration to provide narrative to their war. I've seen references to him being based on Paul Wolfowitz, the political scientists who became Deputy SecDef in the Bush II Administration who famously nearly swallowed his comb to wet it to comb his hair in an image that likely sealed his fate in D.C. as unserious and ridiculous who was then shuffled off to the World Bank, but would Delillo ape the man AND mention him in the narrative? If so, that seems clumsy.
Q: Do you even take Elster serious as a character or believable as a "brain" behind the narrative of an administration going to war? A man who speaks in bad koans and aphorisms like "Time becomes blind." [p.23] and who reads Louis Zukovsky into the night? (Zukovsky famously worked on an epic poem called "A" for over almost 50 years, finally finishing it a few years before his death in 1978.)
Finley tells us: "To Elster, sunset was human invention, our perceptual arrangement of light and space into elements of wonder." [p.18, Scribner]. Elster has come to the desert to seek - something - we know not what and are not told definitively - but his narrative of what his role was in Washington was to create a interpretation of the "closed world" for the "plotters, the strategists" [p. 28] and ends up delivering to Finley what I think Finley was after - the cynical idea that Elster was giving form and shape to the government's bullshit narrative - "The state has to lie. There is no lie in war or in preparation for war that can't be defended. We went beyond this. We tried to create new realities overnight, careful sets of words that resemble advertising slogans in memorability and repeatability."
Q: Is Elster ultimately right? Did the country have a "shadowy need" [p.34] for such a narrative? See, for instance: "Let's roll." [probably in reality, "Let's roll it" referring to a beverage cart to break into the cockpit.]
"Shock and awe." "Global War on Terror" "Slam dunk" "WMDs" "The Surge" And perhaps most infamously "Enhanced Interrogation Techniques"
At the ends of the chapter, we get what counts as a cliffhanger in this slim novel: Elster's adult daughter would be coming for a visit, Jessie who was "otherworldly" [p. 36].
