2024.05.14 01:59 love_is_a_superpower Love unites us - sin divides us

Where the body is, the eagles will gather together. - Luke 17:37
Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and on earth. (Matthew 28:18, Daniel 7:27)
Still, the demonic realm is fighting against Him and His armies. (Ephesians 6:12, 1 Corinthians 10:20-24, Leviticus 17:7, Psalm 106:37)
They fight for territory in the hearts of men. (Daniel 2:35) Their weapons are lies and warped logic. The battle is to conquer the human soul. (James 1:8, 1 Kings 18:21)
Jesus likened the hearts of mankind to a farmer's field. (Matthew 13:38) The logic we're exposed to has the potential to change us and use us to propagate it. (Mark 4:14, Romans 12:2, Leviticus 18:30) The logic we receive is the seed we're sown with. (Hosea 8:7, 1 John 3:24, Luke 8:15) We discard "propaganda" we don't agree with.
What we propagate, proves who we allowed to sow our hearts. (John 8:42-44, Luke 6:45) Our heavenly Father's logic is the bread-corn, the wheat. (Isaiah 53:10, Hosea 2:23, John 1:12, John 12:24) It benefits life. It's purpose is to sustain life and make it enjoyable. (Isaiah 55:2-3) The enemy's logic is the counterfeit. It looks like wheat at first, but does not pass the test of nourishing others. (Matthew 12:34, Romans 10:2-3, Isaiah 58)
It takes from the common ground and uses the energy it receives to stand tall while it can . It provides nothing of value. (Matthew 13:39, Deuteronomy 32:17)
When a person speaks, it is always to influence the world around them. We are wise to separate from those with bad logic, so that we are not contaminated by it. (Matthew 5:30, Genesis 19:12-13, Isaiah 52:11, 2 Corinthians 6:17)
When the harvest comes, the poisonous weeds are thrown out to keep them from contaminating what is good. (Matthew 13:30, 1 John 3:15-18)
As God's creation, we were made to work together to sustain life. Once sin entered our experience, we became divided. The Bible explains that this division is between the living and the dead. Because God is eternal, He sees death long before we do. His word teaches us to see the spiritual cancer of sin, so we can avoid the death it brings. God made us alive, and He wants us to stay that way. Those who accept our Creator's logic don't unite with this world, they only pass through it. (John 11:26, Hebrews 9:27, Isaiah 57:1, Genesis 5:24) Like harvested grain, our Father saves life-bringers for the age to come. (Luke 17:22-37) When Jesus said, "I am the bread of life," He gave us an example to follow. (John 6:35, John 6:51, Romans 12:1, Psalm 16:7-11, Psalm 17:13-15, Matthew 10:25)
Death is not only a state, it is a system. This system devours itself and anything that gets in its path. Jesus explained how this death-system operates. He said, "Where the corpse, (a body lacking His Spirit) is, there the vultures will be gathered. (Galatians 5:14-15, Proverbs 18:21) A carrion-eater sees something dying and does not help it live. Instead it takes advantage of its neighbor while it can. Those who feed on death are blind to the path of life. (Job 15:14, Matthew 13:15-17, 1Timothy 4:1-2, 2 Corinthians 4:4) Their logic has transformed them and robbed them of truth. (Matthew 13:19, Proverbs 25:26) They thirst for blood like a deer thirsts for water. Their logic is unclean. (Matthew 10:16, Job 39:27-30, Psalm 42:1*)
When Jesus entered the justice system of men, He did so, knowing it would cost His life on earth. (1 Corinthians 4:5, Matthew 16:24-26, Isaiah 53) His sacrifice and example show us how to break free from the system of sin and death. (Luke 9:22-27) Jesus lived out the logic of God and proved it was good when He overcame death. (John 11:25, Genesis 5:24, 2 Kings 2:9-11, Mark 16:6)
This is the good logic that will make us fit for eternity. It is God's prayer - what He asks of us.
Listen, you who rule with God (Shema, Yisrael) (Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Mark 12:29-31)
The Lord our God, the Lord is One. (God is not divided by death-bringing logic. This truth is what makes God eternal Numbers 23:19)
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind. (be united with His logic and become eternal John 8:32, John 17:21-26)
And love your neighbor as yourself (treat the body of others as you do your own body. Leviticus 19:18, Ephesians 5:28-30, Deuteronomy 15:7-11, Proverbs 19:17)
Today, if you hear His voice, follow it into a new life with Him. He loves you. He gave up everything to have you with Him forever. There is no better time to separate from death than right now.

The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure."

42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 "Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 "You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
Luke 6:45 NKJV
45 "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Matthew 12:34 NKJV
34 "Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
Romans 10:2-3 NKJV

Isaiah 58:1-14 NKJV
1 "Cry aloud, spare not; Lift up your voice like a trumpet; Tell My people their transgression, And the house of Jacob their sins. 2 Yet they seek Me daily, And delight to know My ways, As a nation that did righteousness, And did not forsake the ordinance of their God. They ask of Me the ordinances of justice; They take delight in approaching God. 3 'Why have we fasted,' they say, 'and You have not seen? Why have we afflicted our souls, and You take no notice?' "In fact, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, And exploit all your laborers. 4 Indeed you fast for strife and debate, And to strike with the fist of wickedness. You will not fast as you do this day, To make your voice heard on high. 5 Is it a fast that I have chosen, A day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, And to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Would you call this a fast, And an acceptable day to the LORD? 6 "Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh? 8 Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. 9 Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, 'Here I am.' "If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, 10 If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday. 11 The LORD will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. 12 Those from among you Shall build the old waste places; You shall raise up the foundations of many generations; And you shall be called the Repairer of the Breach, The Restorer of Streets to Dwell In. 13 "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of the LORD honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking your own words, 14 Then you shall delight yourself in the LORD; And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father. The mouth of the LORD has spoken."
When we fail to recognize community above self-promotion, we drain life of what makes it valuable, without a way to recharge that energy. Selfishness is how we unite with the father of lies and death.
Matthew 13:39 NKJV
39 "The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels.
Deuteronomy 32:17 NKJV
17 They sacrificed to demons, not to God, To gods they did not know, To new gods, new arrivals That your fathers did not fear.
When a person speaks, it is always to influence the world around them. We are wise to separate from those with bad logic, so that we are not contaminated by it.
Matthew 5:30 NKJV
30 "And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

12 Then the men said to Lot, "Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city--take them out of this place! 13 "For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it."
Isaiah 52:11 NKJV
11 Depart! Depart! Go out from there, Touch no unclean thing; Go out from the midst of her, Be clean, You who bear the vessels of the LORD.
2 Corinthians 6:17 NKJV
17 Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you."
When the harvest of our souls comes upon us, those with toxic logic are excluded from the age to come. This is to keep them from bringing death into heaven the way they brought death into the earth.
Matthew 13:30 NKJV
30 'Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn." ' "
1 John 3:15-18 NKJV
15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? 18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
Those who accept our Creator's logic don't unite with death, they only pass through it. Some avoid it altogether.

Luke 17:22-37 NKJV
22 Then He said to the disciples, "The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 "And they will say to you, 'Look here!' or 'Look there!' Do not go after them or follow them. 24 "For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day. 25 "But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 "And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 "They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 "Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29 "but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 "Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed. 31 "In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. 32 "Remember Lot's wife. 33 "Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 "I tell you, in that night there will be two men in one bed: the one will be taken and the other will be left. 35 "Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left. 36 "Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left." 37 And they answered and said to Him, "Where, Lord?" So He said to them, "Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together."
Genesis 25:8 NKJV
8 Then Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people.
Matthew 13:47-52 NKJV
47 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind, 48 "which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away. 49 "So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, 50 "and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth." 51 Jesus said to them, "Have you understood all these things?" They said to Him, "Yes, Lord." 52 Then He said to them, "Therefore every scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old."
When Jesus said, "I am the bread of life," He gave us an example to follow.

Psalm 16:7-11 NKJV
7 I will bless the LORD who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the night seasons. 8 I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope. 10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 11 You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 17:13-15 NKJV
13 Arise, O LORD, Confront him, cast him down; Deliver my life from the wicked with Your sword, 14 With Your hand from men, O LORD, From men of the world who have their portion in this life, And whose belly You fill with Your hidden treasure. They are satisfied with children, And leave the rest of their possession for their babes. 15 As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness.
Matthew 10:25 NKJV
25 "It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!
Death is a system which devours itself. Jesus explained how this death-system operates. He said, "Where the corpse (a body lacking His Spirit of life) is, there the vultures will be gathered.
Galatians 5:14-15 NKJV
14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!
Proverbs 18:21 NKJV
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.
A carrion-eater sees something dying and does not help it live. Instead it takes advantage of its neighbor while it can. Those who feed on death are blind to the path of life. Job's "friends" didn't acknowledge God's power to make people holy.

15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.' 16 "But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; 17 "for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.
1 Timothy 4:1-2 NKJV
1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,
2 Corinthians 4:4 NKJV
4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
Those who accept death as "part of life" cannot break free from sin because of their polluted logic. Garbage in, garbage out. We thirst for what we love.
**Matthew 13:19 NKJV
19 "When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.

Psalm 42:1 NKJV
1 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.
When Jesus entered the justice system of men, He did so, knowing it would cost His life on earth. His sacrifice and example show us how to break free from the system of sin and death.
1 Corinthians 4:5 NKJV
5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one's praise will come from God.
Matthew 16:24-26 NKJV
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Isaiah 53:1-12 NKJV
1 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. 9 And they made His grave with the wicked--But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. 11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
Luke 9:22-27 NKJV

Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so." 11 Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

This is the first commandment. 31 "And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

Deuteronomy 15:7-11 NKJV
7 "If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, 8 "but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs. 9 "Beware lest there be a wicked thought in your heart, saying, 'The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand,' and your eye be evil against your poor brother and you give him nothing, and he cry out to the LORD against you, and it become sin among you. 10 "You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the LORD your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand. 11 "For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, 'You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.'

(Matthew 13:19, Proverbs 25:26*) They thirst for blood like a deer thirsts for water. Their logic is unclean. (Matthew 10:16, Job 39:27-30, Psalm 42:1)

Do not go after them or follow them. 36 "Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left." 37 And they answered and said to Him, "Where, Lord?" The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, 50 "and cast them into the furnace of fire.

Job 15:14 NKJV
14 "What is man, that he could be pure? And he who is born of a woman, that he could be righteous?
Matthew 13:15-17 NKJV
Proverbs 25:26 NKJV
26 A righteous man who falters before the wicked Is like a murky spring and a polluted well.
Matthew 10:16 NKJV
16 "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
Job 39:27-30 NKJV
27 Does the eagle mount up at your command, And make its nest on high? 28 On the rock it dwells and resides, On the crag of the rock and the stronghold. 29 From there it spies out the prey; Its eyes observe from afar. 30 Its young ones suck up blood; And where the slain are, there it is."
22 saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day." 23 Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. 25 "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? 26 "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father's, and of the holy angels. 27 "But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the kingdom of God."
Jesus lived out the logic of God and proved it was good when He overcame death.

2 Kings 2:9-11 NKJV
9 And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?" Elisha said, "Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me." 10 So he said, "You have asked a hard thing.
Mark 16:6 NKJV
And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him.
Jesus' logic makes us fit for eternity. He shows us that love is the only way to live and thrive forever. Jesus is the Word of God. He is the same yesterday, today and forever

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 NKJV
4 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! 5 "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 "You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 "You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 "You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Mark 12:29-31 NKJV
29 Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. 30 'And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment. 31 "And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. 26 "And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."

2024.05.14 01:55 love_is_a_superpower Love unites us - sin divides us.

(God is not divided by death-bringing logic, this truth is what makes God eternal Numbers 23:19)

Deuteronomy 32:17 NKJV
17 They sacrificed to demons, not to God, To gods they did not know, To new gods, new arrivals That your fathers did not fear.

When the harvest of our souls comes upon us, those with toxic logic are excluded from the age to come. This is to keep them from bringing death into heaven the way they brought death into the earth.

Like a farmer harvests grain, our Father saves life-bringers for the age to come.

Job 15:14 NKJV
14 "What is man, that he could be pure? And he who is born of a woman, that he could be righteous?

Elisha said, "Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me." 10 So he said, "You have asked a hard thing.
Mark 16:6 NKJV
And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him.

This is the first commandment. 31 "And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. 26 "And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."

(God is not divided by death-bringing logic, this truth is what makes God eternal Numbers 23:19)

Genesis 19:12-13 NKJV
John 11:26 NKJV
26 "And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"
Hebrews 9:27 NKJV
27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,
Isaiah 57:1 NKJV
1 The righteous perishes, And no man takes it to heart; Merciful men are taken away, While no one considers That the righteous is taken away from evil.
Genesis 5:24 NKJV
24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 NKJV
17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
Like a farmer harvests grain, our Father saves life-bringers for the age to come.
John 6:35 NKJV
35 And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
John 6:51 NKJV
51 "I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world."
Romans 12:1 NKJV
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
Job 15:14 NKJV
14 "What is man, that he could be pure? And he who is born of a woman, that he could be righteous?
Matthew 13:15-17 NKJV
John 11:25 NKJV
25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.
Genesis 5:24 NKJV
24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
Listen, you who rule with God (Shema, Yisrael)
The Lord our God, the Lord is One. (God is not divided by death-bringing logic, this truth is what makes God eternal.
Numbers 23:19 NKJV
19 "God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind. (be united with His logic and become eternal.)
John 8:32 NKJV
32 "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
John 17:21-26 NKJV
21 "that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 "And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23 "I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. 24 "Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. 25 "O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. 26 "And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."
Love your neighbor as yourself (treat the body of others as you do your own body.)
Leviticus 19:18 NKJV
18 'You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
Ephesians 5:28-30 NKJV
28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.
Proverbs 19:17 NKJV
17 He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD, And He will pay back what he has given.

2024.05.14 01:50 Smart-Raspberry-9457 Hot Take: Kyoukai should've killed Houken

Kyoukai Problem

Kyoukai, who was probably the best character in Kingdom in the first half of the manga, has been incredibly stale and static as a character over the last few hundred chapters. She is essentially the secondary lead in the story with Ei Sei sidelined in the war arcs and Karyo Ten simply not as compelling as the other 3 leads, this is unacceptable. It's like Hara has no idea what to do with her and she is only present in the story to interact with Shin or kill cannon fodder, completely stifling her character's potential as one of the all time great characters. Her motivation to fight and remain alongside the HSU is not narratively compelling enough if she is destined to become a 6GG.

Shin doesn't need to kill Houken

Shin killing Houken has no narrative impact beyond avenging Ouki and Duke Hyou. Shin's goal is to become the greatest general under the heavens and killing Houken, who is not even a general, does not further his character or his goals. Barely anyone mentions the fact that he killed Houken and people's view of Shin, allies and enemies alike, remain unchanged after the deed proving that the moment had no long-lasting narrative impact which is horrible considering that it was supposed to be an extraordinary moment. Besides, Shin had already killed two generals in Chougaryuu and Gakuei and had done enough to earn a promotion.

Kyoukai and Houken Parallels

Kyoukai has far more similarities with Houken than Shin does. Early in the story, they were both incredible mystical fighters who have obtained their strength away from the battlefield. They are the two most powerful characters in terms of martial might while simultaneously lacking weight, which is critical in raising their strength. They were both loners who struggle to connect with others, failing to see the value you can gain from others. However their characters diverge when Kyoukai learns to accept her companionship with Shin and the HSU while Houken continues to fail to see Ouki's point and refusing to develop as a person. Given how much Kingdom values "weight" as a concept, Kyoukai should be rewarded for forging her new path while Houken should be punished for refusing to adapt which is far more thematically satisfying than what we got.

What Should've Happened

By simply reversing the sequence of events, this can easily work. Instead, have Shin engage Houken first and have him fail. He is weaker than Kyoukai and should not be able to slay Houken at this point as his "weight" at this point should not be enough to overcome their difference in martial might. Shin puts up a decent fight, gets injured, and gets saved by Kyoukai before Houken can finish him.
Like what happened, Kyoukai and Houken's fight could have commentary by Riboku and Kaine who were watching. While initially shocked by how Kyoukai is beating Houken, Riboku begins to understand what is going on. He explains to Kaine how he can see that Kyoukai has far more conviction in her eyes than Houken does.
From Houken's perspective, he is just as shocked as he can't believe that someone he basically defeated at Bayou has surpassed him in this moment. However, unlike his fights with Ouki, Houken finally learns his lesson in his final moments. He wasn't able to understand why Ouki beat him, but by witnessing the context surrounding Kyoukai's motivation to protect Shin and the others to defeat him, he finally learns his lesson. Ouki's vengeance doesn't come in the form of Shin but by the fact that in Houken's final moments, he finally understands and acknowledges to himself that Ouki was greater. In this way, Houken's character is fully utilized as a tool to illustrate the concept of "weight" and his character development at his very end makes it far more satisfying.

Consequences

Kyoukai needs to kill Houken far more as her biggest kill was Ryuutu who was only a strategist. However, the victory comes with a cost. By going too far in her priestess dance, Kyoukai can no longer access her priestess dance and is nerfed but is still relatively strong.
The consequences to Kyoukai makes Shin extremely guilty for not being able to take out Houken himself. Despite accomplishing a lot, he is incredibly hard on himself fueling his further hungriness and motivation. He feels that he is holding Kyoukai back by keeping her in the HSU and pushes her away to an extent. This puts a strain in their relationship and can explain why they don't officially get together.

Kyoukai's Character Arc

Kyoukai's started as a young, wandering assassin who only lived to fulfill her quest for revenge. Her journey from transforming into an outcast to finding a new family and home in the HSU gave her a reason to live and wish for a future that she could not have imagined. However, that should not be the limit to her goals.
After getting nerfed, she struggles to find her new identity and live up to her newfound reputation. When she loses her ability as one of the best fighters in the world, she loses her self-confidence and must struggle to find ways to overcome it and continue to grow as a general.
To compensate, she would have to grow as a leader, where she is sorely lacking compared to others like the trio. She tends to formulate plans that put herself in high-risk situations rather than rely on others. To overcome this, I think having Kyoukai serve alongside/under Yotanwa in some of the Zhao campaigns would help her grow as leader.
Yotanwa can finally serve a proper role in the narrative as a direct mentor figure to one of the leads instead of a just a plot device and there no better general to learn from to develop leadership skills than Yotanwa. She can gather insight on how Yotanwa was able to unite a ragtag group of mountain tribes into a formidable army. She can teach how she is able to inspire her allies and get the best out of her troops consistently while revealing how she was able to turn previous enemies into allies. Developing this relationship is critical to successfully transform Kyoukai into a 6GG in the future.
However, that is not even the most profound effect it can have on the story. With Qin's wars of unification fully underway, there will be a lot of warriors and generals who will lack purpose once their leaders and states fall. Do they accept their new realities or fight to the death in alongside their generals and countries (most notably, Riboku's vassals)? Their situations are not too different from the time when Kyoukai planned to kill herself after killing Yuuren and join her sister in the afterlife.
To fulfill Kyoukai's character arc, she must realize this and decide to save these folks. She must decide that although they are officially former enemies, these people deserve to be given a future and a new home just like what Shin and the HSU did for her. That new home would be in the form of Kyoukai's army. A large proportion of Kyoukai's army when she reaches 6GG will be formed from warriors of fallen states as well as marginalized groups. This fits in perfectly with Sei's vision for a unified China and Kyoukai's success in forming such an army would be a political and symbolic victory in itself by reaffirming Sei's dream. The obviously challenge would be can Kyoukai actually convince these folks to fight for her and by extension, Qin, their former enemies and this is where Yotanwa's mentorship would come in handy.

2024.05.13 23:16 Koala_Guru We need to talk about the debate on "faction favoritism" and why the whole truth is more complex. (Long post)

The abundance of dwarves, humans, and elves in The War Within thus far has ignited a whole new wave of debate across WoW social media on the supposed faction favoritism of the devs. This is a tale as old as time. Whether it was BfA showing "Horde favoritism" by repeating the Horde-centric story of MoP where the Alliance are just sort of along for the ride of a Horde rebellion, Legion showing "Alliance favoritism" for the prevalence of humans, elves, and draenei throughout its core themes, or hell, how BfA's "Horde favoritism" wasn't the "favoritism" the Horde needs because it makes them out to be irredeemable monsters regardless of player input, so BfA was actually "Alliance favoritism" and round and round it goes.
So now we come to TWW and the arguments have started up all over again. But both sides of this debate tend to overlook what exactly is going on with the story, and in the process being vocal about the wrong kind of problems with the storytelling that need to be addressed. What's been happening isn't any kind of faction favoritism. It's race favoritism.
The only playable races that get consistent advancements in story from expansion to expansion are humans, orcs, and elves. Anyone else typically spends their time waiting around for the devs and writers to glance in their general direction and hopefully toss them a crumb of content. A patch that uses their race's aesthetic. Possibly even an expansion that puts them at the forefront. And they just have to pray that whatever story they are given is good, because they won't be getting any more for years after. Otherwise we get something like the retaking of Gilneas: A story Worgen players had been begging for since Cataclysm that ultimately ended up being incredibly short and barely focusing on the Gilneans at all.
Generally what this means is that a race will suddenly get that aforementioned crumb of story, only to be surrounded by people of the opposing faction calling out faction favoritism, when the race in question has not had any story in years. It's happening currently with dwarves. TWW is finally doing something with story threads that were sewn and then left to dangle all the way back in Cataclysm. Dagran is no longer an infant. Dwarven politics are being explored. And a new tribe related to the dwarves is at the forefront of marketing. Again, this is the first time since Cataclysm that dwarves have been given anything to work with, but their role here is being decried as "Alliance favoritism" as if the dwarves had been getting story all along.
Often even when the story would theoretically be most suited to a certain non-human/orc/elf race, we will get new lore making them fit in, or otherwise attach a main character of those races to the story so that players don't get too "lost." The return to Argus, the home of the Draenei, should have been a huge deal for Draenei everywhere. And Velen himself was prominent. But we didn't really get any other Draenei stepping up to play major roles in this Argus storyline. Instead, we reintroduced Turalyon and Alleria. Turalyon is now the leader of the otherwise-Draenei group known as the Army of the Light. He actually is the one who introduced Elekks to their army. Meanwhile Alleria's connections to the void take center stage in Eredath: The zone that is the former main hub of Draenei civilization. Or look at TWW. An expansion entirely underground calls to mind none of the three "main" races WoW likes to focus on. Instead, it makes sense to shift the focus to dwarves, goblins, gnomes, and also other non-playable races. But a whole expansion not focusing on the faves of the writers is unthinkable, so we have to introduce Hallowfall: An underground civilization of humans, elves, and half-elves who have immediate ties to the main plot and quickly take over the focus of the story from the Earthen and Kobolds of the first two zones. Notably, every press release on TWW has said Anduin and Alleria are the main characters of the expansion, not Moira, Dagran, Magni, Gazlowe, or others.
It's also worth noting how the only allied race leaders who have consistently gone on to appear in important story roles after their introduction are the humans and elves. Turalyon and Alleria continue to be important, while Captain Fareeya (I'm sure you're asking "Who?") still has yet to get a defined personality. Thalyssra of the Nightborne immediately went on to play a major role in the Naz'jatar zone of BfA, and has since married Lor'themar, while Mayla occasionally shows up with glazed over eyes to say "Hey, Baine is pretty cool, right?" Talanji actually got a book after BfA, but then disappeared in the actual game in the following expansions. Her appearance in the background of the first TWW trailer turned some heads, only for it to be revealed that she was a placeholder for a new race that seem to be more tied to the Night Elves than anyone else.
There are a few different ways in which an underutilized race can get a story boost:
1) Human/Elf/Orc ties:
Often times we'll start to see a race appear more if they are given explicit ties to one of the three races I talked about. Genn Greymane did appear in many stories beginning with the Legion expansion, though none were really about the Worgen people or Gilneas. Genn himself prefers to stay in his human form, and he is far more invested in Anduin's story than the plight of his people for most of his run as a recurring character. The retaking of Gilneas saw Genn even abdicate the throne to his daughter, Tess, who does not even have a Worgen form. I would not be surprised if Gilneas became a much more prominent part of the story moving forward now that their figurehead is more human. Notably Darius Crowley, someone who is very important to Worgen lore, consistently stays in his Worgen form, and is canonically the leader of the effort to retake Gilneas from Cataclysm to Dragonflight, has been on the bench since his debut and was not even included in the ultimate culmination of his work.
Or how about the Forsaken? Most Forsaken story was not about them, but about Sylvanas Windrunner: An undead High Elf who by virtue of plot is able to not have any visible rotting or traditional Forsaken traits on her body. When BfA and Shadowlands happened, there was some hope among Forsaken players that future Forsaken story could actually be about the average undead, only for them to immediately be tethered to Calia Menethil, another undead who by virtue of plot is able to not have any rotting or traditional Forsaken traits on her body. And we all know how much people love Calia.
2) Complete separation from their race:
Sometimes a character from a race not usually focused on will rise to main story prominence, but only because they no longer have strong ties to their race. Therefore, they can get some story without having to also advance the story of their race. We've already talked about Genn staying in human form most of the time and acting as Anduin's advisor, but he's not the only example. When Magni returned as the "Speaker of Azeroth," there was no shakeup in dwarven society to address. The only place we actually saw some acknowledgement of the shakeups this could cause was in a short promotional comic for Legion where he wakes up, tells Moira he won't want the throne back, and leaves. From Legion to now, Magni has not had a hint of a connection to his people, and we're only now addressing that in TWW.
Baine's biggest roles in the story never have anything to do with him being a leader to his people. Instead, it's when he needs to play the diplomat to Jaina and Anduin. The uncertain foil to Sylvanas or Garrosh. Baine, and the Tauren as a whole, exist as supporting characters in stories not their own. In fact, there's a long history of races only existing to prop up the story favorites. They had to write into the lore that Gelbin Mekkatorque specifically chose to ignore his own people's plight and support the wider Alliance in the hopes they'd one day return the favor. They never have.
3) The story of their debut expansion is focused on them:
Finally you sometimes get an expansion that is dead set on tying its new playable race to the story of its expansion. I speak primarily of the Pandaren and the Dracthyr. Two races introduced in expansions focused on the introduction of their people to the Alliance and Horde, and the problems erupting in their homes. Unfortunately, as we saw with the Pandaren, the buck stops there. Once Mists of Pandaria ended, so did any drive to tell the Pandaren's story. They have remained playable. They remain able to occasionally appear as a background NPC who is drunk or something because that is the one characteristic they're now known for. But any focus on them as a people is gone. Time will tell if the Dracthyr will see the same fate once Dragonflight officially ends, but I don't like their odds.
Conclusion:
All of this is to say, I hesitate to paint with a broad brush and declare something like "Alliance favoritism" or "Horde favoritism." Because that would be to ignore how stagnant the stories of so many of the races in those factions have been for so long. To ignore that Dagran, the supposed next ruler of a united Dwarven people has only just now graduated from a generic baby dwarf model despite being introduced in 2010. To ignore that Gazlowe was casually handed leadership of the Bilgewater Cartel with one line of dialogue while humans and orcs get whole expansions dedicated to a transfer in power. To ignore that "For Gnomeregan" has been the battle cry of a still homeless Gnome population since Vanilla WoW. To ignore that the Draenei, introduced in 2007, are finally confirmed to be thinking about building a new home in our current year of 2024.
I'd like to believe things have changed. I'd like to be excited that Dwarf storylines are being told at the start of Khaz Algar, and there is seemingly setup for a Goblin-centric patch in our future. But I know this franchise's history.

Is anyone else running into an issue with SM’s promotion points not showing their points for a weapons qual? I have multiple soldiers that are running into the issue in our unit so I’m trying to see if it’s an army wide issue or just an us issue.

Biography

Daemon Tarreos, born Daemon of Tyria, was the son of a blacksmith and the great grandson of a legionnaire from the old city of Tyria. Born 6 BC, Daemon was not even out of his smallclothes when the Tyroshi, the Braavosi, and the Durrandons and Targaryens visited fury and fire upon the Volantese, ending its near five decade long uninterrupted control over two of Valyria's daughters and his homeland of Achissa. In the uncertainty and violence that followed, it was only the Lost Legion, a renowned mercenary company structured like the Lockstep Legions of old, that shielded their town.
This inspired Daemon. And by the time he was ten, he'd made up his mind. He was going to be a Legionnaire. By the age of fourteen he'd take steps in making his dream reality, attempting to train in the Legion's fort. He found himself adept with weapons, and his insistence on training did not go unnoticed. He had caught the attention of then praetor of the Tiger Banner, Aelyx Tarreos. A commander of high standing in both the Legion and town of Achissa, he had taken the young Daemon under his wing, earning him the nickname 'Tiger Cub'.
In 17 AC, at the age of 23, Daemon would be named a Sword of the Corps for the Tiger Banner thanks to his cunning mind and Aelyx's tutelage and in 18 AC, Aelyx would become the Legate of the Legion. He appointed Daemon to serve as his Quaestor, managing logistics for the Legion and serving as a higher officer. It was during this time that he served with distinguished service, managing the operations of the Legion in the Disputed Lands. Life moved quickly for Daemon, and he would marry. In 19 AC, he would welcome a daughter into the world, but at the cost of his love who died shortly after childbirth.
After multiple successful campaigns, Aelyx would surprise Daemon by choosing to name his heir, adopting him and allowing him to take his name in the year 20 AC. Unfortunately, not long after in 23 AC disaster would strike: the city of Achissa would come under threat by mercenaries, its position coveted by the regional powers of Myr and Tyrosh. The Legion would make a daring stand at the fields of Achissa but it was for not. Defeated, the Legion made a hasty retreat to Achissa and began the process of evacuating in an attempt to spare the Achissans the fate of slavery.
Getting assistance from the Blue Sails, the remnants of the Legion regrouped in Plankey Town, but had been decimated. Among the casualties was Aelyx Tarreos and the majority of the Banner of the Bull. Embittered by the loss of Achissa, Daemon pledged to find a new home - for his daughter, and his people. Donning the mantle of the White Tiger, Daemon would sway the Officers of the Tiger Banner into naming him Praetor. Unfortunately, a stalemate grew between the three remaining Praetors. No Legate would be elected. As to the fate of Ērinnon, the sword that never surrenders, it has ended up in Daemon's capable hands until such a time a legate is named.
The Legion has, since, wandered Westeros, taking work primarily in the destabilized Reach and attempting to regrow their number and establish their reputation again. The Achissan refugees, serving as camp followers and laborers, are never far behind eagerly awaiting their chance to take back their home. But, among servants and officers, it's whispered that Daemon in particular has become more attached to the foreign land than the other two Praetor, and may seek to find his home here under the last Dragonlords - a rumor that could become reality should he become the next Legate.

Age: 40

Appearance: Standing over six foot two, Baelon cuts a powerful figure. He is dark of hair with violet eyes and is said to have a beard. Few outside of the Legion's command structure have seen him without his brass mask depicting a bearded man, an artifact of forgotten times. It's resulted in a number of rumors about his appearance, with many believing him to be scarred or suggest he's suffering from grayscale, and more outlandish rumors being that there's more than one Baelon.
Trait: Unscrupulous
Skill(s): Tactician, 2H (e)
Talent(s): Language: Westerosi Common, Military Philosophy, Fishing
Negative Trait(s): N/A
Starting Title(s): Praetor of the Lost Legion, the Dragon Praetor
Starting Location: Opening Event

Biography

Baelon's youth is shrouded in mystery. Surfacing in the year of 5 AC, Baelon swiftly rose in the ranks of the Dragon Banner. Characterized by his strange mask and armor, he became known in his youth for his savage nature on the battlefield, cleaving men in two with his large sword. This translated to his tactics once he was promoted to an officer, where he touted the theories of Baelor the Brass Dragon, a Commander known for his brutal approach to conducting war.
Burning farms, severing supply lines, taking no quarter, and liberating slaves of the enemy combatants were fundamental to his approach to warfare in the Disputed Lands - to make it unprofitable and bloody for the enemies. His unscrupulous nature saw a meteoric rise and he would become a Praetor at only 25, the youngest to have successfully done so.
Unlike the other two Praetors, while he has sympathy toward the plight of the Achissans, he believes that the Legion is still an army first and foremost, and rejects the idea of settling. This is not entirely unpopular with the Legion's younger soldiers and officers, especially as the town of Achissa falls further and further into the past. It's possible that, should he become Legate that this will be the future of the Legion - an army with no state forever more.

2024.05.13 21:16 Robinsonirish NBC if you want to win over our hearts the product needs to change. Bring back player intros, stop shoving gambling down our throats during games and run less commericals.

Commercials
Commercials. Commercials. 2 minute of SAS/Perkins. Commercials. Straight into tip-off. There is a massive difference between TNT and ESPN's half-time show, both in length and quality. The quality of Inside the NBA might be hard to replicate, but at least don't take after ESPN and run constant commercials.
Gambling
Watching the first quarter of game 2 between NYK-IND the other night, Kenny and Charles were promoting gambling in the middle of a game.
They minimized the game and had a small video in the feed of them. They spoke about spreads, something about Brunson scoring over or under 50pts in this game. Go ahead, place that bet guys.
I know it's not the first time they've promoted gambling while the game is going on but it's still shocking. It's one thing to see it on a jersey, on the floor or in a commercial between the games... but seeing it during the game from Kenny and Charles just makes me so sick to my stomach.
NBA player intros
We haven't seen players intro in around 10 years. I'm not sure exactly what year they stopped, but it was around 2014-16 or so. You might think; "Surely they run them during the finals right?" No and they haven't in ages, all in the name of greed.
The youngins' don't know what they're missing. So much hype comes out of those player intros. You get pumped up and they're incredibly important for the fans at home to get into the game. So many fun memories have been created because of the player intros. Jordan and Alan Parsons Project, Heatles and Seven Nation Army, Pistons and The Final Countdown are permanently linked for a lot of people.
97' Bulls intro
2005 Pistons intro
2008 Celtics intro
2013 HEAT intro
NBA your product is slipping and it's all in the name of greed. NBC please right these wrongs.

I'm just starting out in Youtube (Not going to link anything here to avoid any rule breaking) I am focusing on an audio channel relating to wars and battles. Kind of like a short story in the view of someone who was in the battle / army during the time. At the moment I am focusing on the 100 year war, I'll get to the point, if you was interested in such Youtube channel would you like it to be more realistic, historically accurate or a bit off the beaten track as one would say.
Also another question would be, is there any particular Wars and battles you would be an interesting topic, as I am British I have been focusing on what I know about the conflicts but would love to do research into lesser known conflicts.
Thanks for reading, and apologies if this sounds like self promotion.

2024.05.13 20:00 Tie_ID I played Future Warfare in Civilization VI. It was agonizing.

To preface, this situation is a result of my unsuccessful attempt to get the "Give Peace a Chance" achievement for Gandhi. The requirements for it are as simple as they are impossible to meet: you must get +35 faith from Gandhi's leader ability on a Huge map, which awards +5 faith for every religion founder you have met that is currently at peace. Not just with you – with everyone else as well. I am not sure about city-states, but it would make sense that they are included in the requirement as well.
In this game, I won the diplomatic victory. I thought it was only fitting for Gandhi to pursue that victory condition, but I wish it did something to actually help with the conditions of the achievement, because as soon as the game continued, not a single AI player recognized it, to the point that every session of the World Congress kept unanimously making me lose 2 diplomatic victory points. I spent most of the game on Monarchy boosted with an additional slot from the Potala Palace for that influence generation boost; I had an insane economy that was miles ahead of any AI empire, and avoided grievances for the whole game.
That did nothing to advance me towards the achievement. AI players would engage each other in endless feuds, and I don't think I've ever seen more than +25 faith from this ability. The game does not give you any tools to speed up peace processes or prevent wars from breaking out. I've seen accounts of others who went for the same achievement, and I didn't want the save file to "go to waste," so to speak. Thus I decided to play World Police a little. Just to see if some military action would be enough to make warmongers stand down.
Basil II of Byzantine was the worst offender in that regard, possessing two capitals of Civilization he had entirely wiped out. I built up my tank armies, sent two GDRs their way in the hopes of a swift campaign, but my hopes were crushed by the sight of 4 GDRs stationed across the border. Even worse yet, my spies reported that at least 6 more were in production.
Here is the first issue of Future Warfare in Civilization VI: the AI always overbuilds. As long as you, the player, keep your strategic resource income positive, you will always have an edge over the AI whose units will be suffering from maluses due to depleted strategic reserves. Unfortunately for me, sometimes that doesn't matter, and the case of Basil was a stellar example of that: his ability, Taxis, gives +3 combat strength for every holy city Byzantium has converted into its religion. That buff stood at a proud +9 CS in my game, and stacked with Crusade (because I was liberating cities) and the difficulty bonus of +2 CS from the Emperor difficulty. The overall +21 CS bonus completely invalidates the -20 CS penalty from severe lack of Uranium for GDR maintenance.
Thankfully, at that point Byzantium did not have the anti-air GDR promotion yet, which enabled me to pick apart their mechs with jet bombers. But still, Basil II basically instituting the Adeptus Mechanicus corps with techpriests that maintain GDRs in battle was probably the most insane mental image I've ever had playing Civilization. I managed to prevail in that conflict and captured all sources of uranium that they had, and just in time, because by the end he had researched that promotion.
Two civilizations were liberated and Basil was banished to his colony on a small continent with barely any strategic resources and his entirely military dismantled due to the excessive reparations of the peace treaty forcing him to disband units. Did that pacify him? No, of course not: right now, about 40 turns after that war had concluded, he was targeted by a city-state emergency. Other AI players did not take my actions kindly either: despite my efforts to liberate two civilizations from a warmongering empire, merely occupying Basil's cities was enough to send half of the world into a denouncement spiral for me. And with the widespread adoption of Giant Death Robots, an era of terror was ushered upon that cursed world...
Here is the second issue of Future Warfare in Civilization VI: the AI catches up quicker than you think. I managed to build up more than twice as much science per turn as the next highest player was generating, and yet I still had to use spies to delay science victories of other players. I have no idea about how the catch-up formula works, but it feels like it rubberbands computer players into an equal footing with you technologically, which leaves a very short window of opportunity to utilize your robots with impunity. That meant that while I was busy dealing with Byzantium, everyone else started building up their GDRs.
It doesn't matter that there is not enough uranium to support them all, which quickly results in combat strength maluses ramping up and no healing for the unit (I haven't seen the GDRs of other units receive bonus health once). The computer oppotents treat GDRs as their golden ticket to overturn the game in their favour, so much so that even if you take their capital and most of their cities, then propose a peace where you give all of them back in exchange for a sieged city with a uranium source in it, the AI will refuse: the city is not a deal-blocking clause, but the uranium worked by it is.
The unfortunate consequence of this is what I called the "Mech Wars." Every single computer opponent thought it was their time to settle their disputes once and for all, and the entire world became a battleground for GDR skirmishes. I stayed out of that conflict, and very quickly, due to the issues above, it ran its course: the health of GDRs would drop low, prompting the empires to hide the robots inside the cities in their state of extreme disrepair. With a negative income of uranium, they would turn to training Modern Tank armies, and when oil runs out, they would keep training units with no resource requirements for as much as their gold income allows.
Seriously, why don't Nuclear Submarines require uranium for maintenance? It's so ridiculous that whenever my destroyers go by, there are submarine armadas every few tiles around them.
I have honestly tried to salvage this. I made up alliances with the most peaceful and thus powerful civilizations in the game (they didn't lose their units in pointless feuds). I brought two Nuclear Emergencies to success, using both times as opportunities to take away whatever uranium those civilizations had. But in the background, other wars would rage. Cree, a longtime ally of mine and a generally peaceful Civ, went on to raze several of the cities that I had liberated from Basil in a war of their own, which I had to put a stop to, despite the threat of a Betrayal emergency. Liberated civilizations are generally weaker, and I thought that would make them less likely to start wars, but what really happened is that they formed a sort of "minor league" where they think that the outdated units of their small militaries are enough to take each other out.
Emergencies happen all the time, and while declarations of war are joint, the peace is always separate, and I can't prompt any of my allies to make peace after the emergency concludes. It is honestly infuriating how little tools you have for influencing diplomacy that is not your own. It would be sensible if the Diplomatic victory established World Peace in the "Just One More Turn..." mode, and in that case the player would be encouraged to take on the slight challenge of achieving a diplomatic victory by a Civilization that has no bonuses towards it (Gandhi's India) for the sake of an achievement.
Since this isn't the case, though, I'll either have to try this again on a lower difficulty, maybe even on Settler; or I'll simply give up and run a game with eleven clones of Wilfried Laurier. That's a strategy I've seen too.

2024.05.13 16:34 Jerzul Auto Promotion Shenanigans

What is everyone's strategy to avoid the AI auto promoting terrible officers from the lower ranks to Maj. Gen when creating a new army?
I was just playing a campaign and had Lyon get disgraced in a small battle. I replaced him as the leader of the brigade, and then a little later I created a new army and boom. Disgraced Lyon jumps two ranks to be put in charge of a new army. Worse yet, the promotion is permanent! Why is this a feature?
I'm guessing that veteran players have a strategy for avoiding these situations, and I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

2024.05.13 16:23 Chen_Geller The Hunt for Gollum: Peter Jackson's Leonore Number 3?

The Hunt for Gollum: Peter Jackson's Leonore Number 3?
I've written before about The Hunt for Gollum for Fellowship of Fans AND for this board, but having had time to think about it, I think a deeper examination of it is in order.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is a film, scheduled for 2026, produced by Sir Peter Jackson and directed by Andrew Serkis, about Aragorn and his tracking down Gollum during the early stages of The Fellowship of the Ring and/or the period leading up to it.
The film is an intriging concept - not least for the participation of all these Lord of the Rings and Hobbit luminaries - including perhaps de-aged cast members - but does raise some concerns: in the pas, these kinds of entries-between-the-entries have done as much a disservice to their respective series as they enriched them: could this film possibly sidestep such issues?

What is it about?

In spite of the name - which is only a working title - this film is NOT essentially a Gollum film like the dreaded video game, but AN ARAGORN FILM: It is based on Aragorn's descriptions (mostly in the Council of Elrond) of his hunt of Gollum. Exactly what the film will entail is unclear: given that Gollum first leaves his cave only a few years after The Hobbit, the filmmakers could use it as license to regail us with much of his travels and those of a younger Aragorn, as well as Gondor tilting towards war, Balin's colony in Moria, and perhaps even Saruman falling under Sauron's spell: The White Wizard is already expected to appear in animated form in The War of the Rohirrim. Even oddballs like Tom Bombadil could be made to fit in there.
The title, however, may well suggest a more focused premise, centering on Aragorn and Gandalf's actual hunting down of Gollum, perhaps much of those earlier events in Gollum and Aragorn's life condensed into a prologue. This would make this NOT be a prequel in the usual sense of the word: rather than take place BEFORE Fellowship of the Ring, such a film will take place DURING Fellowship of the Ring, betwen the 32 minute mark when Gandalf leaves to convene with Aragorn, who suggests hunting Gollum down, and the 34 minute mark when Ringwraiths first approach the Shire. In that case, I mused here on the sub that this might entail the producers opting for de-aging rather than recasting the roles, especially since the films do away with the seventeen-year timelapse that was to occur at this spot.
This is actually a premise that had intrigued Jackson for a long time: Aragorn and Gandalf track Gollum down from the outskirts of Mirkwood to the outskirts of Mordor. Gandalf breaks off for Minas Tirith while Aragorn tracks Gollum (since having gone through Shelob Lair only to be captured in Mordor) to within sight of Minas Morgul and finally catching him in the Dead Marshes, and leading him to the Woodland Realm, where he's finally released from captivity in the mayham of an Orc attack.

Jackson evidentally loved it, talking about shooting it - at the time as more footage to be added into The Lord of the Rings - as early as 1998: "We would write and shoot [...] scenes involving Gandalf and Aragorn hunting Gollum, and his capture by Orcs …" He lamented its absence in the director's commentary to The Fellowship of the Ring. By 2002, while in post-production for The Two Towers, Jackson confided in both composer Howard Shore and Executive Producer Mark Ordesky that he intends to make The Hobbit and a "Lord of the Rings prequel" about Aragorn. The project entered development along with The Hobbit in 2006, but seemingly died out before 2008, as The Hobbit was proving a bigger undertaking than originally concieved.
Nevertheless, Jackson says they still wanted to have Mortensen in the film: "We did try to figure out a way to put... to get a cameo, even if it was a cameo for Aragorn and actually for Arwen, too: we tried to have Liv Tyler in the film." Mortensen suggests he turned an approach down, but for his part Jackson says: "We couldn't think of a way of doing it."

Who is making it?

The film is being produced by Sir Peter Jackson, written by Philippa Boyens, Dame Frances Walsh and apparently by War of the Rohirrim scribes Arty Papageorgieu and Phoebe Gittins. Ken Kamins (Jackson's agent) is executive producing along with Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish and, presumably, Pam Abdy and Michael de Luca. Serkis is to direct as well as reprise his role as Gollum, and had talked about going back to New Zealand to work with Weta.
Jackson had previously said: "You kind of feel a sentimental attachment, a sort of ownership, to the Middle-earth that's been put on the screen." In an interview he says:
Having been happy to hand The Hobbit to Guillermo [Del Toro] and then doing it myself, I definitely ended up with a stronger sense of ownership of Middle-earth than I ever had before, and it would be kind of hard to sit back and watch another filmmaker do stories if they were connected to these ones. If they weren’t connected, then sure. But if it was something connected to this mythology that we’ve done, if I had the energy and the strength then I would really want to do it. Never say never!
This return of the familiar faces is reassuring: even de Luca was one of the executives championing The Lord of the Rings in New Line in 1998. Astonishingly, this will be the seventh (!) film in the series produced by Jackson and, after Rohirrim releases later this year, the fourth produced by Philippa Boyens, and alltogether they'll amount to a good 25 hours (!) of film from these filmmakers in this Tolkien setting.
Andy Serkis had first directed some of his fight with Deagol in The Return of the King, and became the second-unit director of The Hobbit trilogy, and has now been "promoted" under Jackson's producer mantle to direct this film. Along with Weta Workshop and WetaFX, and presumably concept artists Alan Lee and John Howe (hot off of Rohirrim) and perhaps later on composer Howard Shore, this stands a good chance of managing to bottle the same sensibilitiy as the previous films. Jackson had spoken of this for The Hobbit: "We have deliberately tried to pull the same people back again, because they are the sort of the beating heart, they're the spirit of the film."
Never, in fact, has a film series managed to maintain the kind of continuity in the production crew that Jackson had achieved in this film series. At the end of The Hobbit, visual effects supervisor Mat Aitken mused: "I don't know if one team has ever worked on all six films in a series, to the extent that this has all been hand-crafted by one sort of central team of people." The War of the Rohirrim and anchiliary projects like the "Beyond the Door" renovations at Hobbiton have also reunited some of the Lord of the Rings crew, and now this film is sure to do the same.
Putting the de-aging cunundrum to the side for a second, the film is bound to also include new characters, and its as of yet an enigma as to who they would be and who might play them.
To de-age, or not to de-age? That is the question.
The project is completely separate from Amzon Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. In fact, New Line executives say they seek to "stop Amazon blurring the lines" between the show and the films. Having said that, since in its first season the show had also made a concerted effort to draw Lord of the Rings veterans into the fold, there is going to be some overlap in terms of the craftspeople like Weta Workshop. If anything, the show provided them with a dry-run for this film. John Howe is still on the show's payroll and will presumably have to carefully manage his time, or else choose one production or the other, with my bet being that, if called for it, he's sure to go with Jackson.
There's a hillarious bit in the director's commentary to The Battle of the Five Armies:
Philippa: "Aragorn really is one who tracks Gollum and ends up...and finds him eventually in the Dead Marshes, and he's taken to the Elves. And he's taken to the Elves, and because of the kindness of the Elves - and Legolas is one of his keepers...
Jackson: "In Mirkwood?"
Philippa: "...in Mirkwood, and through their kindness he actually manages to escape. Or has he escaped? Or was he let loose?"
Jackson: "So that's like a seventh Tolkien movie that you've just heard."
Philippa: Yeah, got luck, Pete!
Jackson: "No, its not a film we're gonna... its a film that we'll never make, but you just heard a little imaginative version of it from Philippa Boyens there that you...
Philippa: "The Hunting Gollum through the wild"
Jackson: "The Hunting of Gollum"
Philippa: "and a few other things that go on which are really interesting. Saruman's search for the Ring is also interesting, yeah."
Jackson: "All part of a fictitious film 3.5."

What is it going to be like?

I don't think the portentous comparisons to Star Wars and Marvel are very merited: by the time this film is out, The Lord of the Rings will have a grand total of eight films, while both those series are well into double digits of both films AND tie-in shows. The fact that its crafted by the same people, as I said above, rather than by an army of artisans coming in and out at the behest of an overweening studio, also demarcates it from the standard Hollywood franchise.
Having said that, the film is somewhat akin to the kind of entries-between-the-entries that Star Wars, in particular, had dabbled with increasingly. This is somewhat disconcerting to me because I tend to find such entries very problematic. To quote a fabulous essay about Star Wars:
"The success of 'Star Wars' has obviated a lot of its original virtues. Much of the fun of watching the film for the first time, now forever inaccessible to us, was in the slow unveiling of its universe [...] Subsequent sequels, tie-in novels, interstitial TV shows, video games and fan fiction have lovingly ground this charm out of existence with exhaustive, literal-minded explication: Every marginal background character now has a name and a back story, every offhand allusion a history."
I find that these "interstitial" prequels do the most harm in this regard: there's no surer way to make the Death Star and its blowing of Aldeeran less impressive than to see so much of it in action in Rogue One, and no surer way to make the Ben-Vader duel in the original less effective than turning it into not the second (per Revenge of the Sith) but the fourth confrontation between the two adversaries, as is shown in the Obi-Wan miniseries.
What's more, they can take the time-lapse that exists between entries and trilogies and make it feel condensed by taking all or most of the events that happen offscreen during the interval and dramatising them such that they seemingly happen in a few days or weeks. If this film is set more DURING Fellowship of the Ring then before it, that could help sidestep this issue.
These are, however, issues that I think the Tolkien films had managed to sidestep until now. This film, however, is serious danger of falling right into them: the way Fellowship of the Ring keeps Gollum in the shadows still works after An Unexpected Journey, partially thanks to the big time-lapse between the two. Seeing Gollum through this film at a time more closely adjacent or concurrent to The Fellowship of the Ring, however, will ruin this buildup that is in Fellowship of the Ring. Strider, sitting off to the side in The Prancing Pony, will no longer be able to retain that air of mystique and potential danger he's supposed to have, although admittedly the film (unlike the book) doesn't keep this charade up for very long.
What's more, if the filmmakers don't resist the urge to revisit a lot of the locations of The Lord of the Rings like Gondor and much of Mordor, it will risk "flatenning" the experience of The Lord of the Rings: The Hobbit already reprised (rather harmlessly) Hobbiton, Trollshaws, Rivendell, Amon Sul and Bree. If this film also throws-in Lorien, Mordor, Gondor, Moria, the Dead Marshes and even Shelob's Lair into the mix, it will have an effect similar to what Beethoven feared Leonore number 3 overture would have to Fidelio: by encapsulating many of the tunes to appear in the piece, it effectivelly made the piece itself superflous. Likewise, if we visit practically all the locales of The Lord of the Rings before actually getting to Lord of the Rings, much the air of discovery that is so crucial to the atmosphere of these films will have evaporated.
The only way to sidestep this would be to cast as much of this film as possible into the wilderness. Revisiting the Woodland Realm, by contrast, could be a welcome addition: it would be nice to see Thranduil's realm on better times, with the Elves no longer cooped inside Thranduil's underground stronghold but spread around it and through the Woodland at large. Jackson and Boyens have mused about revisiting Tauriel before, so that's a possibility some fans might not appreciate, but which I think is plausible enough given the setting.
The Woodland Realm: notice the walkway and stairs to the side.
Another way to sidestep it would be to frame it in such a way that it works as a flashback AFTER Fellowship of the Ring, being that its probably concurrent with that film. At the same time, structurally, this film might play better in the middle of the structure, balancing out the two trilogies in terms of length.

So, what next?

Jackson is attached to produce another undisclosed film, rounding up a mammoth eight films in his personal Tolkien oevure, and nine films in his audiovisual realisation of Middle-earth. Being that this first one is one that takes place during The Fellowship of the Ring and that we know Jackson had long wanted to make, it makes sense that the second film will be of a similar sort. This suggest the Battle of Dale as a possible subject matter, concurrent with The Return of the King. Tellingly, Philippa had hypothetically mentioned it in her interview with Nerd of the Rings.

Random Post - Humans/Gods that desperately need their own fan roster agenda: Pierre du Terrail or the Chevalier De Bayard, nicknamed
One of the greatest heroes of France in the sixteenth century, was the Chevalier Bayard, or, as we may translate his title, Bayard the Knight. His real name was Pierre du Terrail; and he came of a famous family of warriors who had done excellent service for their country. He was born in the year 1476, at Bayard Castle, near the town of Grenoble, in France; and it was from the family estate that he took the name of Bayard.
He is often called "the knight without fear and without reproach." He was so brave that he never feared a foe; so good that no one ever reproached him for doing wrong. His father and grandfather were warriors, and no other life than that of a soldier was thought of for young Pierre.
The first step in the education of a knight was to become a page. When fourteen years old Pierre began his military training as a page to a famous warrior of that time, Duke Charles of Savoy.
Mounted upon a pony, and dressed in a suit of silk and velvet, he was a handsome little fellow; but, better than that, he was courteous and obliging. The pages carried messages from the duke and duchess to their friends; and Pierre was such a faithful messenger that he became a general favorite.
He had not been a year at the ducal palace when the duke had to make a visit to his sovereign, King Charles VIII of France. He thought that he could do no better service to the king than to offer him his bright little page.
The king was charmed with him, and for three years Pierre was page to the king. He was then promoted to the rank of gentleman. He was only seventeen years old; but it was not long before he became famous, and everybody at the court was speaking in his praise.
It was the fashion, in those days, for brave men to show their skill as soldiers by fighting with one another in "tournaments" or sham fights. A lady, chosen for the occasion and called the Queen of Beauty, presented prizes to the victors. The knights who wished to fight hung their shields on the boughs of trees near the tournament grounds as a challenge. Whoever wished to accept the challenge struck the hanging shield with his lance or sword.
A tournament was to be held in honor of King Charles and the ladies of his court; and Sir Claude de Vaudre (vo' dray), who was the champion of France, hung up his shield. Among those who struck it was young Pierre; and when the tournament was held, he won the prize. He had vanquished Sir Claude.
Not long after this, he held a tournament himself, and was the challenger. Forty-eight warriors struck the shield that he hung up; and one by one they were defeated by him in the tournament.
But it was real war for which the young soldier longed, and very soon it came. The French king invaded Italy, and the Italian states formed a league against him. In a battle which was fought, although the Italians were more than five times as numerous as the French, King Charles won the day.
The champion of the fight was Bayard. Two horses were killed under him, his sword was hacked, and his coat of mail was battered; but in spite of all, he captured the royal standard of Naples. He was brought before the sovereign holding this trophy in his hand; and then and there, on the battlefield, the king made him a knight.
Charles soon afterwards died, but under the new king, Louis VII, the French again fought in Italy. Marching across the Alps, they captured the province of Milan and held it; but the city of Milan was won back from them by the Italian Prince Sforza.
Three hundred of Sforza's horsemen were one day encamped near the city, when Bayard, with only fifty comrades, made an assault on them. The fight was wild, but at length the Italians fled and galloped swiftly through the gates into Milan.
Bayard, supposing that his comrades were close behind him, dashed after the flying Italians into the great square of the city. A fierce attack was now made on him, while he on his part slashed right and left with his battle-axe, killing or wounding many of his assailants. At length however he was overpowered, and taken prisoner. The din of this conflict was heard by Sforza, and he ordered the knight to be brought before him.
When Sforza had heard his story, he said, "Lord Bayard, I set you free. I ask no ransom. I will grant whatever favor you ask."
"Prince," replied Bayard, "I thank you. I ask but my horse and my armor."
Then bidding his generous foe adieu, the knight rode out of the city, and soon reached the camp of his friends.
Some time after this there was war between France and Spain. Both claimed certain parts of Italy, and so the fighting was done on Italian soil.
Once the French and Spanish were on opposite sides of the river. There was a bridge between them which the French held and could easily defend.
The Spanish commander knew of a ford some distance down the stream. He proposed to draw the French away from the bridge, so that his men might capture it.
Accordingly, taking a body of troops, he went to the ford, as if he were intending to cross it. The French, on seeing him move, abandoned their post at the bridge and marched toward the ford.
The bridge being thus left undefended, a body of two hundred Spaniards suddenly appeared and marched directly toward it. Bayard saw that not a moment was to be lost. Putting on his armor, he leaped to the saddle, and spurring his horse, was on the bridge before the Spaniards could reach it.
The Spaniards quickly arrived; but Bayard stood upon the defensive and, swinging his heavy broadsword, he slew an enemy with every blow. The Spaniards thought him some demon, and checked their furious charge. Meanwhile, a band of French horsemen rushed like a whirlwind to the bridge, and drove the Spaniards back to the farther side.
After this exploit men said of Bayard, "Single, he has the might of an army."
Once, at the siege of a castle, he was crossing the ramparts at the head of a storming party, when he received his first wound. He was struck by a pike, and the sharp-pointed head remained fixed in his thigh.
He was taken to a house near by, where a mother and her daughters had shut themselves in in dread of their lives. The mother timidly opened the door, and the wounded knight was taken in; and there for six long weeks he lay, and was nursed as carefully as if he had been a member of the family. And he on his part was their protection, for a band of his soldiers guarded the house until all danger was past.
On the day of Bayard's departure, the mother begged him to accept a little steel box as a remembrance. It contained twenty-five hundred ducats in gold, which would be more than a thousand dollars of our money.
"Give five hundred for me," said Bayard, "to the nuns whose convent near your house has been pillaged; and as for the rest, young ladies, I beg you each to accept a thousand ducats from me; for I owe you much for your care."
War was still raging in North Italy. Francis I had become sovereign of France; and like the king who reigned before him claimed part of Italy for his domain.
The French army lay encamped about the town of Marignano (ma reen ya no). The king was about to take his supper, when suddenly the enemy marched in full force from the gates and assaulted his camp. The French were instantly in arms, and the battle raged as long as there was light to see a foe. Both armies lay under arms all night, and before the sun rose, the fighting had begun again.
The contest has been called the "Battle of the Giants." The French performed marvelous exploits and won the day, but Bayard outshone all his comrades still.
The evening after the victory, King Francis knighted many brave men on the field of battle. But a wonderful honor was chosen for Bayard. The king made proclamation that he himself would receive the rank of knight from his champion.
Accordingly he knelt before the Chevalier, and Bayard, striking the shoulder of Francis with his sword, said, "Rise, Sir Francis;" and thus gave him knighthood.
When, in 1520, Francis I met Henry VIII of England near Calais upon the celebrated "Field of the Cloth of Gold," the knights of both countries vied with each other in what were, perhaps, the grandest tournaments ever held; and Bayard again won the greatest renown.
It had always been the Knight's wish that he might die in battle. And so he did.
In 1524 he was fighting under the French commander, Lord Bonnivet. Want of supplies and sickness compelled Bonnivet to retreat. The Spaniards placed men in ambush along the road which the French had to take. From one of these hidden foes the chevalier received his death wound. A comrade helped him from his horse, and laid him under the shadow of a tree.
Bayard felt that he was dying. He charged his friend to turn his face toward the foe, and then to care for his own safety. When the Spaniards reached the spot, they found him still breathing.
The Spanish general, Lord Pescara, showed him every care, and a priest was brought to console him in his last moments. And thus, loved by friends and admired by foes, the "knight without fear and without reproach" ended his wonderful life.

2024.05.13 07:13 thinkingstranger May 12, 2024

I write a lot about how the Biden-Harris administration is working to restore the principles of the period between 1933 and 1981, when members of both political parties widely shared the belief that the government should regulate business, provide a basic social safety net, promote infrastructure, and protect civil rights. And I write about how that so-called liberal consensus broke down as extremists used the Reconstruction-era image of the American cowboy—who, according to myth, wanted nothing from the government but to be left alone—to stand against what they insisted was creeping socialism that stole tax dollars from hardworking white men in order to give handouts to lazy minorities and women.
But five major stories over the past several days made me realize that I’ve never written about how Trump and his loyalists have distorted the cowboy image until it has become a poisonous caricature of the values its recent defenders have claimed to champion.
The cowboy myth originated during the Reconstruction era as a response to the idea that a government that defended Black rights was “socialist” and that the tax dollars required to pay bureaucrats and army officers would break hardworking white men.
This weekend, on Saturday, May 11, Paul Kiel of ProPublica and Russ Buettner of the New York Times teamed up to deliver a deep investigation into what Trump was talking about when he insisted that he must break tradition and refuse to release his tax returns when he ran for office in 2016 and 2020, citing an audit.
The New York Times had already reported that one of the reasons the Internal Revenue Service was auditing Trump’s taxes was that, beginning in 2010, he began to claim a $72.9 million tax refund because of huge losses from his failing casinos.
Kiel and Buettner followed the convoluted web of Trump’s finances to find another issue with his tax history. They concluded that Trump’s Chicago skyscraper, his last major construction project, was “a vast money loser.” He claimed losses as high as $651 million on it in 2008. But then he appears to have moved ownership of the building in 2010 from one entity to a new one—the authors describe it as “like moving coins from one pocket to another”—and used that move to claim another $168 million in losses, thereby double-dipping.
The experts the authors consulted said that if he loses the audit battle, Trump could owe the IRS more than $100 million. University of Baltimore law professor Walter Schwidetzky, who is an expert on partnership taxation, told the authors: “I think he ripped off the tax system.”
The cowboy myth emphasized dominance over the Indigenous Americans and Mexicans allegedly attacking white settlers from the East. On Friday an impressive piece of reporting from Jude Joffe-Block at NPR untangled the origins of a story pushed by Republicans that Democrats were encouraging asylum seekers to vote illegally for President Joe Biden in 2024, revealing that the story was entirely made up.
The story broke on X, formerly Twitter, on April 15, when the investigative arm of the right-wing Heritage Foundation, which promises to provide “aggressive oversight” of the Biden administration, posted photos of what it claimed were flyers from inside portable toilets at a migrant camp in Matamoros, Mexico, that said in broken Spanish: “Reminder to vote for President Biden when you are in the United States. We need another four years of his term to stay open.” The tweet thread got more than 9 million views and was boosted by Elon Musk, X’s owner.
But the story was fabricated. The flyer used the name of a small organization that helps asylum seekers, along with the name of the woman who runs the organization. She is a U.S. citizen and told Joffe-Block that her organization has “never encouraged people to vote for anyone.” Indeed, it has never come up because everyone knows noncitizens are not eligible to vote. The flyer had outdated phone numbers and addresses, and its Spanish was full of errors. Migrants who are staying at the encampment as they wait for their appointments to enter the U.S. say they have never seen such flyers, and no one has urged them to vote for Biden.
Digging showed that the flyer was “discovered” by the right-wing video site Muckraker, which specializes in “undercover” escapades. The founder of Muckraker, Anthony Rubin, and his brother, Joshua Rubin, had shown up at the organization’s headquarters in Matamoros asking to become volunteers for the organization; they and their conversation were captured on video, and signs point to the conclusion that they planted the flyers.
Nonetheless, Republicans ran with the story. Within 12 hours after the fake flyer appeared on X, Republican representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Dan Bishop (R-NC) brought posters of it to Congress, and Republicans made it a centerpiece of their insistence that Congress must pass a new law against noncitizen voting. Rather than being protected by modern-day cowboys, the woman who ran the organization that helps asylum seekers got death threats.
The cowboy image emphasized the masculinity of the independent men it championed, but the testimony of Stephanie Clifford, the adult film actress also known as Stormy Daniels, in Trump’s criminal trial for falsifying business records to cover up his payments to Clifford to keep her story of their sexual encounter secret before the 2016 election, turns Trump’s aggressive dominance into sad weakness. Covering Clifford’s testimony, Maureen Dowd of the New York Times yesterday wrote that “Trump came across as a loser in her account—a narcissist, cheater, sad Hugh Hefner wannabe, trading his satin pajamas for a dress shirt and trousers (and, later, boxers) as soon as Stormy mocked him.”
In the literature of the cowboy myth, the young champion of the underdog is eventually supposed to settle down and take care of his family, who adore him. But the news of the past week has caricatured that shift, too. On Wednesday, May 8, the Republican Party of Florida announced that it had picked Trump’s youngest son, 18-year-old Barron, as one of the state’s at-large delegates to the Republican National Convention, along with Trump’s other sons, Eric and Donald Jr.; Don Jr.’s fiancée, Kimberly Guilfoyle; and Trump’s second daughter, Tiffany, and her husband.
On Friday, May 10, Trump’s current wife and Barron’s mother, former first lady Melania Trump, issued a statement saying: “While Barron is honored to have been chosen as a delegate by the Florida Republican Party, he regretfully declines to participate due to prior commitments.” It is hard not to interpret this extraordinary snub from his own wife and son as a chilly response to the past month of testimony about his extramarital escapades while Barron was an infant.
Finally, there was the eye-popping story broken by Josh Dawsey and Maxine Joselow in the Washington Post on Thursday, revealing that last month, at a private meeting with about two dozen top oil executives at Mar-a-Lago, Trump offered to reverse President Joe Biden’s environmental rules designed to combat climate change and to stop any new ones from being enacted in exchange for a $1 billion donation.
Trump has promised his supporters that he would be an outsider, using his knowledge of business to defend ordinary Americans against those elites who don’t care about them. Now he has been revealed as being willing to sell us out—to sell humanity out—for the bargain basement price of $1 billion (with about 8 billion people in the world, this would make us each worth about 12 and a half cents).
Chief White House ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush administration Richard Painter wrote: “This is called bribery. It’s a felony.” He followed up with “Even a candidate who loses can be prosecuted for bribery. That includes the former guy asking for a billion dollars in campaign cash from oil companies in exchange for rolling back environmental laws.”
The cowboy myth was always a political image, designed to undermine the idea of a government that worked for ordinary Americans. It was powerful after the Civil War but faded into the past in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s as Americans realized that their lives depended on government regulation and a basic social safety net. The American cowboy burst back into prominence with the advent of the Marlboro Man in 1954, the year of the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision, and the idea of an individual white man who worked hard, wanted nothing from the government but to be left alone, was a sex symbol, and protected his women became a central myth in the rise of politicians determined to overturn the liberal consensus.
Now it seems the myth has come full circle, with the party led by a man whose wife rejects him and whose lovers ridicule him, who makes up stories about dangerous “others,” cheats on his taxes, solicits bribes, and tries to sell out his followers for cash—the very caricature the mythological cowboy was invented to fight.
