2024.05.14 12:44 TooMuch_Sleep10123 Lost and don't know what to do

I'm a 22m international fresher graduated from a mid-rank university in the UK with low grade. My degree is in CompScie and I have always feel little interested in it.
My first year was fully online due to covid, came to a new country to start a completely different life and already in second year. Always felt bored by the subject and most of the the lecture. Unmotivated result in graduate without any experience. No internship, no placement, no hackathons/side project. Hence strugling to find a job.
Now everyday I keep scrolling job boards, applying for jobs that I know I would not be accepted(many of which I did not even intrigued by the jd).
One friend have told me when I graduated is that I should feel excited cause I am free from the university I hated and I am free to do endless thing of whatever I want. But I am on a visa, so there are restriction for the time that I can stay in the UK, I still have a part time job to keep me up with living cost.
I have some people in my network that work in tech. Friends telling I should come find a career coach in my field to get some advice but I just think that it is a problem that is bigger that career. I don't think that I can come to them and tell that I am unmotivated in this field
Sorry about my moaning. I am glad to find people that are lost(in some way) like me in this community too.

2024.05.14 12:38 erukami I thought I had dyshidrosis, it was a fungal infection (tinea/ringworm)

I thought I had dyshidrosis, it was a fungal infection (tinea/ringworm)
First and foremost, I am going to say that my situation is unique to me and I am not saying that what I am posting will apply to those reading. Nor am I saying replies on this subreddit are right or wrong. This is just sharing lessons learned in the case it may help others and is NOT medical advice. When it doubt, go read rule 2 of this sub.
TLDR: I thought I had dyshidrosis but I had a fungal infection that looked absolutely nothing like a fungal infection from existing pictures on the internet. Don't be me, go see a doctor for an official diagnosis if you haven't already.
Just to give a little background on me, I have never been diagnosed with any form of eczema or allergies but some of my family has. Additionally, I have had slightly itchy bumps and extremely dry skin on one of my fingers for a few years now and attributed it as dyshidrosis without getting a dermotologist to look at it (failure on my part, lesson learned).
This all changed in February, when I developed swelling and very itch bumps on two of my fingers and the little clusters of fluid filled spots spread across those fingers. I found this subreddit and started trying out things that worked for people here. I tried moisterizers, a different soap, avoiding overly hot water, and soaking/cold compressing my hands. Nothing worked and the clusters had spread to other fingers. Finally talked to a doctor about it (should have done this sooner, but not easy for my area and I idiotically decided to wait it out) through a virtual appointment and they prescribed a steroid cream. The cream looked like it was helping the first day I used it and then I quickly noticed something was not right. The spots had mostly kept to the sides of my fingers but were rapidly progressing towards my fingerprint on one of the initial fingers. Also, spots were appearing in random areas on the affected fingers.
During that, I also noticed this new spot that made me think fungal infection:
Hard to see, but that is a ring
That area had not been affected by the bumps or clusters prior to applying the cream. I consulted multiple pharmacists (no doctors available) about it and they told me I hadn't used the cream long enough to really see a good result. So I posted here:
I waited a few more days only to see continued spread and eventually major blisters, that continuously weeped, appeared on two of my fingers. I tried to find a doctor's appointment to no avail, so I went to talk to a pharmacist again and was told to continue the cream. I also posted here again:
If you gave me advice on either post, thank you for taking the time to respond. I greatly appreciate it.
I luckily landed an in-person appointment with a clinic that had just recently re-opened. Was told to stop the cream and that I probably had a bacterial infection. The doctor also took swabs for testing. I had explained the spread to the doctor and thought to voice my opinion about it being fungal, but I decided against it (I should have, lesson learned). Got a 10 day antibiotic and it quickly took care of the major blisters. It did not solve the clusters or swelling though and I wanted to talk to the doctor again, but was convinced to wait it out.
Towards the end of the antibiotic, I noticed the clusters were spreading again except in a circle pattern, my fingers were still swollen, and spots had started to appear on my other hand. Got another appointment with the same clinic and the doctor suspected it was a fungal infection caused by the bacterial infection (definitely the reverse). Got a 14 day anti-fungal cream prescription and thought that would be the end of this. 5 days later, the spreading didn't stop and I was not noticing any improvements. Decided against waiting it out and contacted the clinic for another follow-up. This time I got a stronger anti-fungal and steroid cream and it wiped out the infection within the recommended application period.
So I had a fungal infection for a little over 2.5 months. Here's some key lesson learned I am taking away from this situation:
  • If you haven't read rule 2 of this sub, read and remember that rule should apply not only to this sub but to the internet in general.
  • Don't wait to see a doctor if you haven't. If you can't afford it, perfectly understandable, but it is still best to see a doctor. I may have gotten to a solution sooner if I didn't wait a month at first.
  • Don't hesistate to voice your concerns to the doctor you see. If you do, be respectful about it. They're not infallible but they have far more knowledge an experience than you. I would have had this solved far sooner if I had.
  • If you feel something is wrong, don't hesitate to seek assistance. Even if you have to get a second opinion from another doctor. I knew the initial steroid cream was not working and yet I kept following instructions.
  • Ask your doctor what tests they are performing and what improvements should look like if they prescribe a medication. I never got results on the swab tests and didn't ask what I should look out for that would require an immediate follow-up. If I had asked what improvements should look like, I may have gotten the anti-fungal creams sooner.
A bit long and slightly off-topic, but I hope people learn from my mistakes.

2024.05.14 12:33 GovernmentActual6358 Got prostitute pregnant, reality is starting to set in

I've been seeing this prostitute for a little over 3 years now, we met in 2020 and early on we stopped using condoms, I know, reckless, I know, stupid but I never caught anything and nothing ever happened so we continued. She only speaks French and I only speak English so I'd been using google chat to communicate with her when we met up.
This woman has robbed me a couple times and then disappeared only for me to get horny and track her down just to meet up for sex again.
This keeps happening until very recently, we met up again and she says that the last time we say eachother about 4 weeks earlier, she got pregnant. I'm stunned, mostly in disbelief.
Surely if she was pregnant she'd be pressing me more for money or for something, any sort of angle that you'd usually think of. I leave that time mostly not believing her story but curious. I come back again after we agree to meet up at night, in my pocket I have a birth control test that I had bought in secret. My line of thinking being that if this is just some lie I'll either get a negative test out of her or some defensive behavior.
I show her the test and say I need to see it, and she just? doesn't argue at all? almost tiredly accepts and goes to the bathroom to do the test, waits a bit then comes and sets it in front of me. Then we begin texting on the translator to eachother, she says she feels lost right now, both happy and sad, and that she's told some of her family and they plan to support her if she has the child, she says she isn't sure if she is going to keep it or abort, but before anyone comes in saying she's a prostitute and she the father could be anyone and she's trying to just pin it on me, that angle makes sense on paper, of course that's what I thought it was at first, just some elaborate lie
but no, the timeline makes sense, she's been a low traffic escort and I was the only one stupid enough to continuously sleep with her without a condom. She is pregnant that is entirely true, but the thing that makes me believe that this is mine and that she is not using this as some angle to extort money out of me is that she has actually been so gracious when we met, no malice, she just calmly explained that she has family around her to help and that I'd have my right as the father, she hasn't pressed me for money just calmly asked for some modest assistance and said that she understands if im not able to be part of the childs life, she comforted me in all my shock and that's what sort of cemented that this is real.
And to those saying get a paternity test, if she plans to go through with giving birth I plan to but also should mention that we are different races and I am one that isn't plentiful in the area she lives/works in. If that child comes out mixed race I'd be able to visually tell if it's mine just due to the logistics of things but yeah I would also get a paternity test. She has a few brothers and none of them have come threatening me, none of them are trying to get my information to extort money out of me, they were all just calm and trying to plan for the next steps
If you're hoping I am distraught with guilt, I am. If you are hoping I learned my lesson of recklessness I did but I haven't seen yet just how many people needed to be affected for me to learn this lesson

2024.05.14 12:28 XaiverVanderwell Does anyone else not invite their nparents to anything?

Anyone else just not invite their parents to anything?
I never invite my own parents to anything unless it’s mandatory, for example, tomorrow at school I’m having an honor roll assembly with the older kids, I hadn’t told my dad about it mainly because I never wanted him to come. I’d be okay if my mom tagged along, both not really at the same time.
I just never want to deal with anything they have to throw and criticize as soon as we get there, I once got scolded for this after not telling them about a writers competition at school that I attended myself and told my dad he wouldn’t have to come.
My mom thinks I’m avoiding them and has made sure to know of any events at school, in fact, the event I’m attending tomorrow my Dad is tagging along, at first I was excited to go because I wouldn’t have to wear the same uncomfortable school uniform, and I’d get to wear a nice dress.
Now that my Dad is coming along, I’m not so excited anymore, because then that means I’ll be subjected to relentless criticism and insults as soon as we get to the school, like any other place we’ve been to together.
I have to go home and deal with their verbal torture and nonstop resentment towards me, it’s hard to maintain an act and be in a good mood at school after my mom just yelled at me and called me a useless child that morning.
Yet besides all that I still have managed to make friends and know others well, be pretty sociable and get reasonable grades, top of my class also, How could I have possibly achieved all this?
By separating a barrier between myself at home and at school. And I think I’ve done a pretty great job at not letting my home rendezvous affect my school experiences.
But when the same people who that barrier has been made for start to step out of bounds and trespass, that’s when it becomes a problem I don’t like to deal with.
Luckily it’s a closer ride to my sweet 18th, not 16 because then I’d still be treated as a kid, I’m surprised at how the emotional abuse hasn’t bitten me as much, aside from a few insecurities and minor people pleasing with doubts, that included never standing up for myself.
But I’ve learned and grown out of their perils, just like I’ve told myself since 6 years old, sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.

2024.05.14 12:27 Flamewakerr To EA and whom it may concern, sincerely, from one of us

Hey everyone, amidst the thousands of rants, in light of Nick's movement, I think it's time for me to say something, maybe no one cares, I don't have a major platform to get my word out, but I still think that it's good to get these things out here and perhaps the best thing all of this can do is change the way we perceive the game as a player base. This will be long, so those of you willing to, bear with me.
Let me tell you something from a point of view of someone who loved the game for a long time. We're a bunch of very versatile people from all over the place and maybe it can also teach us a lesson or two. On one hand, you have kids who play it for the same reason I played it some good 15 years ago, and you've got us, the older players, who loved the game for what it was growing up because it was the best football themed game out there in many aspects, although FIFA entries weren't the only good thing about that era (shoutout to PES 2006 and 2010). It's a game that I used to enjoy because I love football as a sport, I used to play it basically on a professional level, this is the best "active" form for me to engage with the game. I'm probably too stupid for Football Manager though I believe it's only a matter of watchin a few videos to get into it and understand the in-depth mechanics. I always tried playing it and got lost in the menus within 5 minutes. But for what it's worth, I understood FIFA, I understood FUT and the shell of what it once was, the grind was fun to me, using players from past and present that I like, well, until it all got burned to the fucking ground within a year. I was never an Elite div or Rank 1 or even Rank 2 player. But I had certain results, I would get 9 to 11 wins most of the time and with enough free time I could always climb to atleast div 2 in Rivals. Sure, many of you are better and I realize that, but it's not about that. To me it was always about getting better at the game for myself, on my own terms, there would be some progression to it and getting better throughout the years always made me happy. Adult life is adult life and it's very individual, some of us have more free time on our hands, others don't. In my case, I barely have time to do my daily play matches, some SBCs and play Champs on the weekend because of work.
But the question is - how can I consistently enjoy the game if:
The whole situation is very stupid, because there is no viable alternative in terms of football games, and frankly, playing FIFA is a habit and something I've been doing for one half of my life. It's tough for me to get invested into an online competitive game, though I used to play League, Overwatch, stuff like that, but those games became shit over the years as well. That's why, though I'm only one of way too many, from my point of view, my actions bear some value, because as of today, I just don't want to feel like shit because of a game anymore atleast on a weekly basis. As things stand, dumping my time into this game is simply pointless. If I want to play Weekend League, I'll get shat on by the servers, or the gameplay will be horrendous and my cards will feel like freezers getting dragged across the pitch by a rope. Cards with great finishing, will feel like bronze cards, whatever. We're not supposed to get good rewards, and the game will call us out for being "bad" when we get DDAd. At this point, there is nothing positive about it. I will perhaps return for Futties, not that anyone cares, but building fun cards is kinda fun and good, so I'm looking forward to that. Otherwise, I will return only if all of this actually changes something. If the assholes from EA release a statement and actually change something, then I will return earlier, and even then, I'm not giving them a single euro this year. And maybe, for the first time in way too many years, I won't even preorder, maybe I'll play it later on, if it turns out to be better and different. Other than that... there's no point playing if the game is like this. I'm done with feeling negative emotions because of a game designed to gaslight and manipulate us into feeling like shit.
Sorry for the long post, I guess I just felt like I needed to tell someone.

2024.05.14 12:26 Consistent-Sun-4658 I’m on the verge of ending it

Hi, I’m 18 years old, currently holding in my tears while I type this,my girlfriend whom I have been with for 9 months is a girl that I’ve been liking since 7th grade, she went through relationships and situationships all the way until we started talking (Senior year). I already knew about her past since I used to see her with her partners back in sophomore and junior year, when we got in a relationship I was so confident that her past relationships wasn’t gonna affect me, but it unfortunately does, that’s all I been thinking about for the past months, it’s eating me alive, I used to see her with her ex boyfriend walking around and kissing, and that thought just disgustes me, it gets worse when I think that I wasn’t her first time and she was mine. The thing is that I really wanna break up with her, but the thought of not finding anyone like her again eats me alive, I really need help, living like this has deteriorated my metal health so much, I can’t enjoy a moment with her without being disgusted. Please help

2024.05.14 12:26 Ibishek No clock enables for URAM pipeline registers?

Hi,
I'm trying to infer a URAM cascade memory from my code, which should be simple dual port, have clock enable (needs to support backpressure) and have output register pipeline to reduce the critical path. I've taken the Xilinx code templates for simple dual port URAM (which do not have a clock enable) and added the clock enable but synthesis reports that no pipeline registers can be absorbed. If I remove the clock enable, the pipeline registers are absorbed without an issue.
At first I thought that maybe the clock enables are not a supported feature but Xilinx documentation mentions ports OREG_CE_B/A as ' output pipeline register CLK enable' so that gave me some hope.
Anyways, I was not able to find any resources describing how to write the code so that the desired URAM is inferred, does anyone know how to do this? Code for my URAM is as follows:
//Port declarations etc.
(\ ram_style = "ultra" *)* logic [DATA_IN_WDT-1:0] mem[ (1< logic [DATA_IN_WDT-1:0] memreg; logic [DATA_IN_WDT-1:0] mem_pipe_stage[PIPE_OUT_CNT-1:0]; logic en_pipe_reg[PIPE_OUT_CNT:0]; always_ff @(posedge clk) begin : uram_mem_proc //write first if(rd_en & clk_en) begin if(wr_en) mem[wr_addr] <= data_in; memreg <= mem[rd_addr]; end end //pipelined enable signal always_ff @ (posedge clk) begin : en_pipe_reg_proc if(clk_en) begin en_pipe_reg[0] <= rd_en & clk_en; for (int i = 0; i < PIPE_OUT_CNT; i++) en_pipe_reg[i+1] <= en_pipe_reg[i]; end end //initial RAM output register always_ff @ (posedge clk) begin: init_mem_pipe_stage_proc if (en_pipe_reg[0]) mem_pipe_stage [0] <= memreg; end //RAM output pipeline always_ff @ (posedge clk) begin : mem_pipe_stage_proc for (int i = 0; i < PIPE_OUT_CNT-1; i++) if (en_pipe_reg[i+1]) mem_pipe_stage[i+1] <= mem_pipe_stage[i]; end //final output register always_ff @ (posedge clk) begin : fin_mem_pipe_stage_proc if(!rst_n) begin data_out <= '0; end if(clk_en) begin if(en_pipe_reg[PIPE_OUT_CNT]) data_out <= mem_pipe_stage[PIPE_OUT_CNT-1]; end end
So basically the clock enable is on the enable register pipeline and on the final register output. I've also tried adding it to the data register pipeline but it did not work either.
I guess directly inserting the URAM primitive is also an option but I'd like to make this inference template work.
Thanks!

2024.05.14 12:23 Hot-Contribution2122 Still obsessed with LO for over a year after confession + no contact

First time poster and long-time limerent here.
I'm honestly just having a hard time understanding how the hell this thing persists.
I want to say it was about two years ago when I (18M) first became attracted to someone (19-20M, not sure atp) in one of my high school classes. He was in the grade above me at the time (graduated now). At first it was just a simple little crush, until my friends started hyping me up ("you should totally make your move!", "he could be bi!") etc; I was stupid to believe any of that, but friends will be friends and I'm sure they were just trying to help. Anyway, that's when the fantasies started. You know, the idealizations and the "what if" scenarios playing in your head constantly. The feelings only got worse from there, and it got to the point where my main motivation for going to school every day was to see him.
Honestly, I can count on my fingers the number of total interactions I've had with this guy, yet for some reason I felt like floating on air every time I even made eye contact with him across the classroom. I remember one time being assigned to his group for a project and feeling like I had just won the lottery. I didn't know exactly what my feelings were or why I had them, but I knew that sitting around and pining wouldn't get me very far. Eventually, I realized that graduation was lingering and that after that, I would probably never see him again. So I decided I would tell him my feelings, and I knew exactly when I would do it: the two of us would be going on a school music trip, and we happened to be put in the same hotel room. I told myself that I would tell him on the last night of our trip, and though I nearly chickened out, I did it. I told him, and got the response that I was both expecting and silently dreading.
He was honestly as chill and respectful about it as anyone could be, really. He told me that he understood my feelings and that I couldn't control them but, as I expected, he wasn't gay. He even said that this situation did not have to make things awkward between us at school. We both even laughed about it a little bit. In the moment, I was exhilarated that I had finally done it. I had gotten my feelings off my chest, excited that I had gotten closure and could move on, or so I thought.
It wasn't until the next morning at home, when I tried to get out of bed, that reality hit me. Suddenly, that motivation I talked about before was gone, with nothing to take its place. It was as if the weight I felt lift off my chest when I confessed to LO had been replaced with an even heavier one. It took every ounce of my strength to drag myself out of bed and into school that morning.
That trip was a year and two months ago. I kept seeing him in class every day, casting small glances at him with every chance I got. Before I confessed, I was attached and hopeful. After, I was still attached and just...empty. A few months later, he graduated, and I haven't talked to him since. I haven't told many people this, but he still occupies my mind every single day, as does the memory of my confession. I can't look at any pictures of him or hear people talk about him without getting sick to my stomach. I don't know if it's because I still feel something for him, if I'm embarrassed about how I confessed (I said the big "ILY;" was VERY anxious in the moment and didn't know what else to say), or if I'm still subconsciously hoping for something to happen, or if I'm scared of seeing him again because he stayed home and didn't go to college, or something else. What I do know is that I don't think I loved this boy, as I didn't really know him enough. That's something he suggested when I confessed, actually, and I've realized that it's true.
It's been a year since I last saw him, and now my own graduation is nearing. My life couldn't be going better: I have good grades, a great group of friends, and I'll be attending the college of my dreams next year. Yet, after all of those joys and triumphs, my mind always finds its way back to him, every interaction we've ever had replaying in my head like a broken record, and this odd, ever-lasting pain just gnawing away at me.
I guess I just hope to God that I'll meet the person who's meant for me when I go to college. Even if I don't, I just want the pain to stop. It's not debilitating, but it's there, and it's awful. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy.
Sorry for the long post. Needed it off my shoulders.

2024.05.14 12:21 LadyDairhean Generations

The Great Depression had a significant and lasting impact on society, especially in the Dust Bowl states. Oklahoma suffered the worst and is still suffering from its effects. The stock market crashed in 1929. This was 11 years after the end of WWI when a lot of working age men were killed. My father was 19 years old. Children age 4 and older had to go to work in the fields harvesting and hoeing weeds. My maternal grandmother who was born in 1932 cut broomcorn and picked cotton by hand. The International Harvester for cotton was invented in 1940, but only came into widespread use by 1970. The broomcorn industry died out in 1980. Older boys age 11 and up went to work in sawmills and the trades. Watch the movie Walk the Line. Johnny Cash’s older brother of 14 was almost cut vertically in half when he slipped and was cut through the sternum by a large saw blade. Can you imagine being that young and handling dangerous machinery with no safety equipment? Safety equipment didn’t exist back then and neither did child labor laws. Those old Boomer children worked just as hard as adults to help feed their families. They were punished for playing. They had to suck it up and endure extreme hardship just to eat and they ate very little. Everyone was starving and filthy. There was as no indoor plumbing, no electricity and no air conditioning. I watched my grandmother work from sun up to exhaustion and she slept in her clothes. When she died, her bra strap hooks were rusted from sweat because she never removed it, meaning she hadn’t bathed in decades. She was 4-8” and wore a child size medium. She was conditioned to hard work and starvation. She and her family including my mother never overcame the effects of the Depression. She was functionally illiterate despite graduating high school in 1948.
Education stopped at third-fourth grade for the average child because parents were extremely poor and couldn’t afford to pay for schooling. School was different then. Teachers lived in a teacherage provided by the school district and earned a living stipend from the state to teach grades 1-4 how to read, write, sign their names, cipher, count money and read a watch. That was the extent of free education. Advanced learning after 4rth grade was taught by subscription very similar to private tutoring. Grades 5-7 were called grade school. Grades 7-12 were called high school. They didn’t have Junior High.
In 1935, the Second New Deal created the Works Progress / Projects Administration (WPA) to help people recover from the Depression. A lot of new schools were built during this period. Schools were funded with a combination of state aid and a tax levy called a mill collected from every resident in a school district. When Boomers say they shouldn’t have to pay a school tax because they don’t have children in school, this is what they’re referring to. They had the right to vote against a tax levy. These days, we call them temporary sales tax increases to fund things like new gym equipment. Everyone inside the school district votes on the increase and everyone inside and outside the district has to pay the sales tax if they shop at a store in the district. These no-voters will shop outside the district if the tax increase passes.
Fast forward to WWII (1939-1945) and the Korean War (1950-1953) and we see a significant decrease in school attendance that results in the closure of many rural schools. Many of this second generation of Boomers grew up in boarding schools and orphanages because their mothers couldn’t afford to feed them. This period resulted in a high population of youth being institutionalized. One of my grandmother’s sisters was raped by her uncle at age 14 and was sent to an asylum for the mentally ill. My mother (born 1952) and her sisters were taken by DHS (called CPS today) and sent to a girl’s state school after their father died of cirrhosis at the age of 42. He was a bootlegger who literally drank himself to death. Prohibition (1920-1933) was another result of the Depression. It lasted until 1952 in Oklahoma. Forced sterilization in mental institutions was outlawed in 1951 for the sake of medical study. The practice began in 1931 because the state believed that mental illness/retardation was genetic and caused by incest/inbreeding. It runs in my mother’s family so I can confirm the state was right. Mutations in the brain can be passed from mother to child.
The third generation of Boomers was born during the Vietnam War (1955-1975). I was born in 1973, so I’m technically Gen X with Boomer influences but not to the point that I’m a raging psycho. I consider those born in the 60s to be the third Boomer generation. My town lost its high school in 1968 and stopped at the eighth grade. All those who graduated from the 60s-1980 are the anti education gatekeepers of the workforce that I’m personally struggling with. These are the people who hate anyone with an education level above theirs. They’re offended by education unless you’re a doctor or a lawyer and they can use you. They are also anti-technology and refuse to use it. They are bullies who are socially enmeshed and always in your business. This generation of women married older men because men their age were fighting in a war. Or, they married wealthy men. Those women didn’t have to work and became bored housewives. I blame daytime soap operas for teaching these idiots their horrible social skills. They stayed home almost 24/7 except for when they were at the hair salon or shopping. They wore a lot of makeup too and nail polish contained formaldehyde. The amount of lead and toxic chemicals they were exposed to was very high. My mother was in this category from 1970-1980 when she divorced my father. Men who came home from the war were addicted to heroin and may have turned to cocaine, crack or meth. Many ended up homeless or hooked up with women for the welfare benefits. They were insanely abusive. Very few were able to adjust. Women who did not marry well, had to work cash jobs to support themselves and they might have qualified for USDA commodities and food stamps under Johnson’s War on Poverty (1964). We didn’t have welfare reform until 1996. My mother became an alcoholic and was addicted to amphetamines sold as diet pills in the 80s. We had pure meth from 1980 that my stepdad was addicted to and an explosion of brown meth from 1994 to the present. Almost this entire generation and my own Gen X either experimented or became addicted to meth. It affected Millennials too.
Child prostitution as a means of survival and CSA were common during the Depression because there was no law against it and it’s something society has difficulty grappling with. Oklahoma passed its first anti-child molestation law in 1945 after the end of WWII. I remember those old Boomer women saying that talk about sex was vulgar and those matters weren’t discussed. It was swept under the rug until 1990 when teens finally began to speak out. We had an explosion of violent rape and domestic violence in the 90s by Boomers and chauvinists who couldn’t bear to give up their right to sex on demand and beating women.
We got the Department of Education and mandatory attendance in 1980 so Gen X was the first generation to have a well rounded education since 1929. All the generations that came before us are jealous because we also got child labor laws and the statutory rape law. We’re the first generation that didn’t have to endure backbreaking work as children. We got easy jobs like paper routes, babysitting and mowing. As teenagers, farm kids hauled hay but that’s about as strenuous as it got. Many Gen Xers got pregnant young and had to drop out of school or couldn’t go to college. They had to get married and raise a family. I’m struggling with this portion of my generation being jealous as well.
I think Gen Z is the best generation because they are so far removed from the absolute hell that previous generations went through. They have the best education, the best social skills and are the most well adjusted of all the generations that came before them. Gen X just needs to teach ya’ll life skills and survival skills that you can hand down to Gen Alpha.

2024.05.14 12:08 SSGTSnuggles Player throws slurs at another player over an NPC

First time posting; I'm sorry if I screwed up anywhere!
This happened about a year ago so I apologize if I misremember a few details.
At the time, I was running for a new group of four players. The players so far have had one adventure together: killing rats in a basement. Already the party is roleplaying together and making inside jokes. Even the new players who are a bit shy are starting to open up.
For their next adventure, the party has been recruited to go to a nearby farm that is been harassed by nearby goblins. The farm is tended to by three NPC's: Hillard, an old crotchety man who is secretly a powerful wizard in hiding after a "job gone wrong;" Mallory, his wife (who never got developed); and Dolores, their restless daughter. Hillard wants Dolores to stay on the farm, but Dolores has a hunger for adventure. The party decide to take Dolores along with them to go oust all the goblins and give her some spare equipment they have lying around. For context, her stats are all atrocious with about 6 HP to her name.
Miraculously, she survives their encounters, but not without her almost dying several times and realizing that adventuring is a lot more dangerous than she thought.
The party, to my surprise, convinces Hillard to let Dolores join them. More inside jokes appear with some players in character doting on their new adventuring buddy.
Here's where things get weird.
One of my players, our rogue, takes Dolores on his protégé. He spends most of his gold in town buying her equipment and healing potions and attempts to give her life lessons and training in their downtime. While I don't give a mechanical benefit, I do roleplay Dolores slowly building confidence, namely feeling more safe now that she has a shield and armor to hide in.
Another new player who is playing our druid decides that she is going to roleplay that she's not a fan of Dolores. While the rogue is building up Dolores' confidence and coddling her, the druid instead makes remarks that it's a waste of time as Dolores is probably just going to wind up dead. Other players in character chastise the druid for this, but it's all in character so I think nothing of it. Post session there are more jokes and things seem to be going well.
Later, I get a bunch of discord messages from the druid player that the rogue player is DM'ing her and making her feel upset and useless.
I go and talk to the rogue player and he's complaining because he doesn't like how the druid player is putting down Dolores. I tell him that firstly if he has problems with other players to bring it to me first (a policy I have so that I can filter out the vitriol if players have legitimate concerns) but I remind him that Dolores is an NPC with about 6 HP and that while he might be getting attached, the druid player is under no obligation to do so. I ask him if that's a problem for him and let him know that I will address it if it is, but he says that it isn't and apologizes for his behavior.
I speak with the other players and ask if they're having any issues with this and they're surprised I'm even asking. To them (and me) it added a much needed dynamic to Dolores.
I then ask both the druid and rogue players privately if they would be okay meeting together in a group call to have a discussion, namely to see if this can be salvaged, and they agree. Surprisingly, the rogue player apologizes for being out of line and admitting that he let it get to him. I propose that players are allowed to have different opinions and can roleplay different opinions but that any conflict will stay between characters and not extend outside the table. The players agree and make up, and the next session goes pretty smoothly.
Three sessions later and he has a full-on explosion, calling the druid player a female dog and an impolite word for female genitals, rants that she's "ruined the game by being such a downer to Dolores" and leaves the call. He messages me privately that he really enjoyed our game and would love to be invited to another one if I host, but that he can't stand how miserable "that c---" is by making everyone feel depressed (again, I spoke with the other players and they were surprised he felt that way at all.)
Part of me wanted to call him out, but I'm too nice and instead thanked him for his compliment, told him he would not be receiving a future invite to my tables, and blocked him.
I then had a long conversation with the druid player who has been absolutely emotionally destroyed by this and in tears. We have a player meeting with the remaining players about it. I offer to end the game if no one feels like playing anymore, but everyone says that they enjoyed the game thus far and wanted to see what more I had in store.
Even the druid.
Somehow that game is still going on. And Dolores is somehow still with them, alive and well.

2024.05.14 12:07 Worldly-Signal-7314 School counselor teaching seminar classes?

Hello,
So I was certified as a School Counselor in May of 2022, and my first job was a bust. But now I'm in a public school (finally) for this year, but I was hired for a specific state grant funded program that assists students in obtaining college credits for free during High School. Problem is, it's been "part-time" since the beginning, and they added on an extra title that I never wanted and don't enjoy (although I've been doing what I gotta do). So I was fighting to make the position full-time. Yesterday my supervisor tells me that she is going to make it full-time for the program next year, but I'll have to teach 3 out of the 4 seminar classes. Seminar class is a way for students to gain skills and knowledge towards being college-going. There's a "90 hours of extended learning" requirement for each grade for each year. That's how our district has met that requirement in the past.
So I started reaching out to other districts/schools with the same grant for insight, asking if the person who runs their program is full-time or part-time and if they're paid from the grant or what. Also how they meet the 90 hour requirement and who does that teaching.
My teacher friend from a different district said she thinks I'll have to suck it up for a year and teach the seminars because she's worried if I find a way to not need seminar, then they will use that as justification to not make me full-time.
I've also debated looking elsewhere for jobs because I'm not a teacher....and if I wanted to teach I would've gone to school for that? Also I have a 45+ min commute each way.
I'd appreciate advice/perspectives on this situation please. Thanks for reading!

i genuinely don’t understand why they decided to make this session so damn difficult. first they fucked us in the ass with mechanics and now pure 2 as well?? i thought that p1 and p2 would carry my math grade but no, i bombed 2/3 of my math exams and im on the verge of throwing myself out the window. i thought i made a good decision choosing this board over cambridge bc it’s easier apparently, but it’s becoming clear that they want us to resit over and over and give them money. i studied A LOT since the very beginning of the year, i took private classes and solved hella past papers, but i was struggling as well as all of my smart classmates so yk damn well that shit was terrible
i was supposed to go to uni after this school year. i could’ve gotten in on a scholarship, but after today i feel so defeated because i know for sure i’ll have to resit my exams
tldr; kos om edexcel, kos om as-levels, kos om my school, fuck this stupid baka life

2024.05.14 11:58 TinySylver I am being threatened and harassed ! please help

I met a guy online , we last month and we met . He started buying gifts for me and i accepted them . Did not know it will end up like this. He ordered the gifts at my friends hostel address . He has my number too. Yesterday he sent me a gift card and it was decided that we are meeting in a hotel . He booked it and i didnt go . Why did i do that? Because the first time he said he would order things for me after we meet, we met but he did them on cod. He fooled me and then for the entire month he was dodging me , went offline for 10 days saying he was sick and lost his sim card and everything. So he wasted my time and i said i want to end things with him because he is only dodging me and only taking not giving. So the cod order that was placed earlier was now replaced by this gift card that he sent now. And i didnt go and meet him. Hes a software enginner working in gurgaon. He is threatening and harassing me that he will track my location and reach my family tell them that i “scammed” him . He will ruin my life etc etc he will reach the hostel . Then i blocked him and then he msged me today around 1 pm that he got my address and hell send legal notice to my house and hostel . He will give me a lesson etc etc. Yesterday he also said that either come and meet me now or face the consequences. What can i do

2024.05.14 11:48 PerplexedRBX I feel extremely hopeless, stressed, and depressed, don’t know what to do

Every day I’m stressed, can hardly get any sleep because it keeps me up at night, leading to more stress. I just feel very scared and have no one to talk to. I feel like a failure and feel ashamed to look at myself. I’m usually an overachiever, in high school i was within the top 10% of students, but second semester as a freshman i failed a class and took it extremely hard. On top of that, my grades in the other classes weren’t the best and were made even worse when i was panicking trying to pass that class i failed, to the point i got put on academic probation. The class seemed easy at first so i guess i didn’t take it too seriously later when it got very hard. Then the next quarter comes and i still feel like trash for what i did. I feel like a disappointment to all my friends, family, old teachers who want to see me succeed, everyone. I feel like ive betrayed them by not doing well when they’ve supported me all the way here. Having all these thoughts made me have some kind of distancing effect with my work, my brain just shut down and i couldnt focus on it. On top of that i got a very bad cold the first couple weeks and couldnt really show up to class. So nearly a month goes by of not really doing anything and ive been cramming in all my studying for midterms after reality hit me. I do horrible on a midterm and not that well on another. One of the classes im very likely to fail, and another ill probably barely pass. I know it’s my own fault and i just don’t know what to do, this stress is just taking a toll on me. My future seems uncertain and i feel depressed because of this. I don’t find joy in the hobbies i used to do, i have no friends to talk to, my dad is usually too busy to talk and my mom hates me, i just feel so alone and scared. My gpa this quarter will probably be worse than last quarter so since im already on academic probation, i might get disqualified from attending ucsc, or might not get any financial aid which basically means i cant attend either. Im just breaking down right now thinking about this, been on my mind every day and i cant sleep I’ve ruined everything and this feels like the end. I just wish i had another chance to prove myself

2024.05.14 11:32 Anti_Ice_ Do/Should 3 Year windows for SrA EPBs disadvantage those with greater experience?

For the third year I have been granted the statement of “Promote” being just average. When requesting feedback what I was informed “This year was outstanding, truly one of the top candidates among the unit. However, in previous years you failed to make top marks.” Supervisory firewall 5s were accounted for but that’s a separate issues “Because of this leadership determined that you shouldn’t received a promotion statement.”
My question stands, is this the intended usage of the EPB 3 year format? Is it to show improvement or to punish those who grew?
When I first joined I had a lot of lessons to learn, no paperwork but college and squadron moral organization were off the table. Now, as I sit in top marks (only behind the late 20’s earning their SrA Doctorates) I can’t help think what a waste if an average EPR from Covid impacts your testing years later.
What are your thoughts?

2024.05.14 11:31 LesleyFair Why GPT-4 Is 100x Smaller Than People Think

Why GPT-4 Is 100x Smaller Than People Think

GPT-4 Size
Since before the release of GPT-4, the rumor mill has been buzzing.
People predicted and are still claiming the model has 100 trillion parameters. That's a trillion with a "t".
The often-used graphic above makes GPT-3 look like a cute little breadcrumb, which is about to have a live-ending encounter with a bowling ball
Sure, OpenAI's new brainchild certainly is mind-bending. And language models have been getting bigger - fast!
But this time is different and it provides a good opportunity to look at the research on scaling large language models (LLMs).
Let's go!

Training 100 Trillion Parameters

The creation of GPT-3 was a marvelous feat of engineering. The training was done on 1024 GPUs, took 34 days, and cost $4.6M in compute alone [1].
Training a 100T parameter model on the same data, using 10000 GPUs, would take 53 Years. However, to avoid overfitting such a huge model requires a much(!) larger dataset. This is of course napkin math but it is directionally correct.
So, where did this rumor come from?

The Source Of The Rumor:

It turns out OpenAI itself might be the source.
In August 2021 the CEO of Cerebras told wired: "From talking to OpenAI, GPT-4 will be about 100 trillion parameters".
At the time, this was most likely what they believed. But that was back in 2021. So, basically forever ago when machine learning research is concerned.
Things have changed a lot since then!
To what has happened we first need to look at how people actually decide the number of parameters in a model.

Deciding The Number Of Parameters:

The enormous hunger for resources typically makes it feasible to train an LLM only once.
In practice, the available compute budget is known in advance. The engineers know that e.g. their budget is $5M. This will buy them 1000 GPUs for six weeks on the compute cluster. So, before the training is started the engineers need to accurately predict which hyperparameters will result in the best model.
But there's a catch!
Most research on neural networks is empirical. People typically run hundreds or even thousands of training experiments until they find a good model with the right hyperparameters.
With LLMs we cannot do that. Training 200 GPT-3 models would set you back roughly a billion dollars. Not even the deep-pocketed tech giants can spend this sort of money.
Therefore, researchers need to work with what they have. They can investigate the few big models that have been trained. Or, they can train smaller models of varying sizes hoping to learn something about how big models will behave during training.
This process can be very noisy and the community's understanding has evolved a lot over the last few years.

What People Used To Think About Scaling LLMs

In 2020, a team of researchers from OpenAI released a paper called: "Scaling Laws For Neural Language Models".
They observed a predictable decrease in training loss when increasing the model size over multiple orders of magnitude.
So far so good. However, they made two other observations, which resulted in the model size ballooning rapidly.
  1. To scale models optimally the parameters should scale quicker than the dataset size. To be exact, their analysis showed when increasing the model size 8x the dataset only needs to be increased 5x.
  2. Full model convergence is not compute-efficient. Given a fixed compute budget it is better to train large models shorter than to use a smaller model and train it longer.
Hence, it seemed as if the way to improve performance was to scale models faster than the dataset size [2].
And that is what people did. The models got larger and larger with GPT-3 (175B), Gopher (280B), Megatron-Turing NLG (530B) just to name a few.
But the bigger models failed to deliver on the promise.
Read on to learn why!

What We Know About Scaling Models Today

Turns out, you need to scale training sets and models in equal proportions. So, every time the model size doubles, the number of training tokens should double as well.
This was published in DeepMind's 2022 paper: "Training Compute-Optimal Large Language Models"
The researchers fitted over 400 language models ranging from 70M to over 16B parameters. To assess the impact of dataset size they also varied the number of training tokens from 5B-500B tokens.
The findings allowed them to estimate that a compute-optimal version of GPT-3 (175B) should be trained on roughly 3.7T tokens. That is more than 10x the data that the original model was trained on.
To verify their results they trained a fairly small model on lots of data. Their model, called Chinchilla, has 70B parameters and is trained on 1.4T tokens. Hence it is 2.5x smaller than GPT-3 but trained on almost 5x the data.
Chinchilla outperforms GPT-3 and other much larger models by a fair margin [3].
This was a great breakthrough! The model is not just better, but its smaller size makes inference cheaper and finetuning easier.
So, we are starting to see that it would not make sense for OpenAI to build a model as huge as people predict.
Let’s put a nail in the coffin of that rumor once and for all.
To fit a 100T parameter model properly, open OpenAI would need a dataset of roughly 700T tokens. Given 1M GPUs and using the calculus from above, it would still take roughly 2650 years to train the model [1].
mind == blown
You might be thinking: Great, I get it. The model is not that large. But tell me already! How big is GPT-4?

The Size Of GPT-4:

We are lucky.
Details about the GPT-4 architecture recently leaked on Twitter and Pastebin.
So, here is what GPT-4 looks like:
  • GPT-4 has ~1.8 trillion parameters. That makes it 10 times larger than GPT-3.
  • It was trained on ~13T tokens and some fine-tuning data from ScaleAI and produced internally.
  • The training costs for GPT-4 were around $63 million for the compute alone.
  • The model trained for three months using 25.000 Nvidia A100s. That’s quite a considerable speedup compared to the GPT-3 training.
Regardless of the exact design, the model was a solid step forward. However, it will be a long time before we see a 100T-parameter model. It is not clear how such a model could be trained.
There are not enough tokens in our part of the Milky Way to build a dataset large enough for such a model.
There are probably not enough tokens in the
Whatever the model looks like in detail, it is amazing nonetheless.
These are such exciting times to be alive!
As always, I really enjoyed making this for you and I sincerely hope you found it useful!

2024.05.14 11:29 nuggets-and-cheese Is my (23f) boyfriend (23m) a red flag? Based on his behavior in relation to smoking weed and studies.

Hello everyone,
my english isn't that good but I hope you'll understand.
I never wanted to make this kind of post but after this morning I think I really need an opinion from people who don't know us.
So, we've been together for almost 2 years. When I first got to know him he was already studying (I think 1-2 years in) and smoking weed. A lot. I didn't mind because I was smoking, too.
Here is what bothers me the most: when he didn't pass an exam he always said "I've got 2 more tries on this one" or he would even move some exams into the future. I can understand that the stress studying puts you in can be heavy and moving exams into the future or not always passing them on the first try isn't that bad. I really understand. The problem is that when I got to know him (2 years ago) he said he will be finished in 2 years (so this year). But that isn't the case. He is passing his exams but not everyone.
The case is that he somehow mixed something up or missed something, honestly I don't know what the problem was, but he screwed something up and had to kind of change the course of his studies. It's still almost the same and it's not starting from the bottom but he had to change some courses I think.
The thing is, I told him that I think it's because he smokes too much weed. He smokes everyday at least 1-2 joints, in some phases even 2-3 or more. I cut smoking to maybe 2 times per week. The difference is, I'm working and it doesn't affect me. When I smoked much more I still passed my exams with good grades and I can go without smoking for days or even weeks, I don't need it in my live. I only smoke when I'm with him and even then not every time it's rare.
I really think the smoking is affecting him but he always said it's not because of that and once he said if I try to put myself between him and weed, it won't work. I don't even want this. He can smoke, but maybe he is the kind of person that can't do both? You know, like smoking weed and still doing your business - both won't work out for some people I guess.
He works besides University and never misses a work day, just to mention.
It just bothers me so much that there is like no end for his studying, he says next year he's finished but I don't know. He smokes before we eat, he smokes before an event and if I point it out he says "that's how you got to know me".... am I overreacting or is there an honest problem? This morning he slept in again and missed his course. He rarely goes to the university he does it from home or sometimes online but I don't think that's normal? He even smokes when he's in university ... if he goes.
Another thing is that he drove when he smoked. He always said he can do it but I hated it. It still affects your mind and vision.... even if it was 2 hours ago.
I don't know what to do. I enjoy smoking too but I can say that I don't need it and I am still able to go to work or whatever. (I don't smoke before work I just mean that it doesn't affect me the next day or so).
I honestly can't stand it anymore, I don't know what to think about all this. I'm afraid that I'm ignoring warning signs in relation to his smoking behavior. Why do you need to smoke before every thing you're going to do? Almost everything...

2024.05.14 11:28 Snoo_34229 How do I up my employability with just a business degree majoring in Information tech??

Helloo,
So I’ll be starting my first year in uni very soon studying Bach of Business majoring in info tech… Frankly I’m kinda scared for my future as the field of business is so broad and it doesn’t narrow down to a specific job e.g a Bach of education= teaching etc.. I want to make the most out of my 3 years to ensure I will be able to get a job easily as a fresh graduate in the field of business. I have my eye on the job of a business analyst tho doubt I’ll be able to get that job as fresh graduate.
Anyway…Apart from aiming towards good grades within my course, working part time and volunteering I don’t know what else’s to do to make myself more employable??🫤

2024.05.14 11:20 Abiarraj What to look for when doing a trial lesson with a teacher?

I've had a first trial lesson with this guy and he taught me a lot of cool things about music, including some history. I had the impression he is too academic, would you think that's good or bad?
He still assessed my skills and we discussed my goals on the piano. I want to learn jazz, and he was honest that's not his specialty but he knows enough to put me on track. I'm very beginner and he wants to teach me all the basics: reading scores, play by ear, hand and finger techniques... So I guess the first year with any teacher will be just the same(?)
I have two more trial lessons upcoming with other people, do you have any tips of what should I be looking for or asking?

2024.05.14 11:16 Knalxz For those wondering, odds are, the cute soldier likely escaped in Halo Reach

Noble team is attached to the UNSC's army unlike most other Spartans who're navy elements that often work with the marines in typical navy fashion. The troops you work with for the majority of Reach are soldiers, not marines or seamen. (Spacemen? IDK if that changes in the future) This changes near the end of the game where the army force that Colonel Holland is tied to has clearly taken massive casualties and Noble Team starts working with ODST's, a marine element, and on the final mission are working with the spread-out marines of the Pillar of Autumn.
By the time new Alexanderia is lost the battle for Reach is as well and the UNSC starts to hard focus on asset denial and not victory meaning noncritical troops are being pulled out like Noble Teams supporting army elements. Special forces units like ODST's and Spartans are clearly hanging behind for those burn ops with marines taking up posts to ensure extraction onto the Navy vessels as the last mission showed but it's clearly not a full-on battle but a slow retreat.
As Halsey mentions by the end of the game Noble seemed like they weren't under Holland's command anymore and if anything during the last missions Noble was in a way being transferred to the crew of the Pillar of Autumn to not only get them off world but to deliver their package. This means Holland likely had all of the assets he's told to worry about close to his chest. His soldiers are unable to keep in the fight from casualties, his troops unable to deal with hostile supremacy and operational tasks beyond them with a retreat being sounded. While we don't have a confirmation, he made it off Reach, Holland likely got his people together and left the planet. Again, as Halsey stated, events beyond his grade were happening, so his roles and tasks were being circumvented and with him nor his units critical to the fight anymore they likely pulled out.
Now for those scared that the cute marine could likely be one of the many casualties, I'll let you know that mass casualties for a batllion of troops is 2 people being wounded. That ceases battlion operations because of what is one of the funniest domino affects. It goes like this.
"Oh no, my fireteam has two guys wounded, now my squad leader doesn't want to stay in the fight because he's at half power. Oh no, we're down a squad so now the platoon is at 3/4's power and doesn't won't to risk engaging while weak so they're pulling out of the fight! OH NO! We're down a platoon so now the Company is at 3/4's power and the captain doesn't want to risk advancing with such a weak force. OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The battlion lost an entire company because 2 guys in a team got wounded so the squad leader didn't want to press so the platoon leader didn't want to press and thusly the captain didn't want to press so no the LTC has an entire company down of his battalion so they're at 3/4 power and don't want to press! OH DARN!"
This is of course what happens in modern war, but you get the idea. If casualties are what pushed the army elements of Noble out of the fight it's likely not as grievous as you might think. We don't really do the whole WWII/Vietnam levels of casualties anymore; we learned our lesson of not charging into machine guns, letting the enemy just bomb us or pressing with half a platoon into hostile space.
So while the cute soldier does seem like a go-getter, they likely weren't KIA. Odds are they pulled back with the rest of the army, left with Holland and went to Earth. The reason we didn't see them in Halo 2, 3 or ODST is they weren't apart of the marines and not in Africa. If anything, the special unit Noble was a part of has some rather insane clearances being tasked with not only adding Spartans, having elite pilots in the Sabre program but defending Sword Base she and any survivors were likely moved to a hush post somewhere where ONI was safe. If anything the force that was with Noble might be one of the most secure units to be apart of in the UNSC.
So yes, you can write your fanfic of her survival and eventual turn into a Spartan IV muscle Mommy who makes Sarah Palmer look like a chump because she worked directly with Noble Team during the battle of Reach and has the example of real Spartans.
