2024.05.15 05:02 MoonlightPearlBreeze Would A Chromebook Suffice For A student? Please help with recs too

Old laptop stopped working, but as of now I have a really limited budget (I mean this, the 15-20 k would be perfect, maximum can do 30k if really needed) as a student. I would be using it for mainly watching study lectures, writing, editing images and some slight coding. Would a Chromebook suffice for this? I do also have plans on learning some softwares like blender in the near future.
Or should I wait, save up and just directly get a laptop? From my experience, 15-20k is a good range for chromebooks whereas for laptops it's at least 40k if I don't want to compromise on the speed.
I mainly use Google drive and docs for saving stuff so storage isn't a huge deal. Might need to download large files once in a while.
I am also a tech noob so not sure about what features to look for when making the purchase. Any recommendations and advices would be largely appreciated

2024.05.15 04:41 Competitive_Ad_5459 Help with replacing hard drive

Hi guys,
Basically I have an old work laptop that I’d look to use for personal use (company hasn’t reached out for it it back as it’s old) but obviously can’t log in because my user was deleted. I’ve tried resetting to factory settings initially but a key was needed for this which I don’t have access to so I’m thinking of buying a replacement hard drive instead. Will this mean the laptop will be reset to factory settings and will the old companies software, admin restrictions, etc stay on there?

2024.05.15 04:05 cactus_gtr Looking for new wireless headphones for video editing and PC gaming!

Hi! I'm in the market for a new set of headphones, and I have a lot of boxes I'd like to check, if possible. I'm not even sure where to start, so I came here.
What aspect of your current listening experience would you like to improve?
I've owned the Steelseries Arctis 7 Wireless for as long as they have been around. After several years of daily use, the ear cushions have ripped beyond repair. I loved the headphones and will never be able to go back to anything wired. Curious to see how far wireless/bluetooth technology has come, and if there are any good jack-of-all trades headsets out there for me to check out. I would love to be able to edit videos, play PC games, and listen to music from my iPhone with the same set of headphones. While I produce video content professionally, I am not a sound designer or audio technician, so I'm not too concerned about paying up to get premium sound quality.
Budget - ~$200 USD
Source/Amp - Wireless to Windows laptop and/or iPhone 13.
How the gear will be used - I create video content for my job, so video editing would be the primary use. I do like to game in my free time, so an integrated/detachable microphone is a plus. I don't take gaming that seriously, so the ability to hear footsteps from across the map isn't that important. I would also love to be able to use headphones at the gym by connecting to my phone, but not a dealbreaker.
Preferred tonal balance - Not too picky here. Balanced is probably my best bet.
Preferred music genre(s) - Everything except for heavy metal.
Past gear experience - Steelseries Arctis 7 Wireless. Loved the battery life, retractable microphone, volume dial and game/chat audio balance dial. The mute button was handy too. Such a reliable and durable headset that lasted me over five years with no technical issues. Didn't like how they sat on my head and how quiet they felt. I played all of my games on max volume (admittedly, I never messed with the Steelseries software so this maybe could have been fixed). Headphones were comfortable, but didn't feel secure. If I wanted to connect them to my iPhone, I needed to use the cable and a lightning dongle.
MUST HAVE:
Wireless or bluetooth capability for Windows 10, adequate sound quality for video editing and gaming, microphone (detachable or retractable... would like to wear these in public without looking like a pilot 😂)
BONUS:
Compatible with Windows 10 AND iOS, volume dial, game/chat audio balance dial, mute button, travel friendly
I understand if my criteria and/or budget is a little too restricting, so don't hesitate to let me know that. My knowledge of headphones is super limited, so I need all of the help I can get! Thank you so much!

2024.05.15 03:57 Anonymous-here- SlimQ 330W GAN Charger review

SlimQ 330W GAN Charger review
This is a short review for the GAN charger 330W rated. This charger is capable of charging many ports as opposed to other chargers. You can charge your phone together with the laptop, which I do. It has been very convenient of it. I can leave my wireless mouse charging when I need it charged. Another bonus of this charger is that it is not heavy, it is more compact and I can bring it around without bigger hands. I could not get a software to analyse the total output of the charger. Still, I am certain that when you do really want your phone to be slowly charged without needing an extra plug, you can safely go for this charger.

2024.05.15 03:50 Good_Fruit_4963 Forlinx FCU2303 5G Smart Gateway for Smart Ambulances

In modern cities, the medical rescue system is crucial for urban safety. Emergency centers command rescue operations, essential for saving lives. With the advancement of IoT technology, many cutting-edge technologies are gradually integrated into the medical emergency system, enabling ambulances to be networked, digitized, and intelligent. Thus, 5G smart ambulances emerge. 5G-enhanced ambulances look similar to regular ones in appearance. However, by integrating 5G networks into the vehicle, developers instantly endowed it with additional "superpowers".
https://preview.redd.it/1q3sbti4xh0d1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=5b9c2a877f14c1bb6addb5d8b4286b745c7433f9
For instance, 5G-enhanced ambulances can achieve synchronized transmission of multiple high-definition live videos, leveraging 5G's high bandwidth, low latency, and reliability. Based on this, it can synchronously return the medical images, patient signs, illness records and other information of emergency patients to the hospital emergency center without damage, which is convenient for the emergency center to grasp the patient's condition in advance and give professional guidance to the rescuers on the bus.
Forlinx's 5G Smart Gateway FCU2303 provides reliable support for medical ambulance.

Rapid transmission of information

Bridge the gap for medical device information transmission.
Modern ambulances are equipped with advanced medical equipment such as electrocardiogram monitors, ventilators, and defibrillators to enhance rescue efficiency. Various types of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment can efficiently transmit physiological data to the Hospital Information System (HIS) through the multiple Ethernet ports, serial ports, and DI/DO of the FCU2303 industrial-grade smart gateway. This meets the data collection and transmission requirements of ambulances.

Enabling high-definition audio and video consultations

Medical imaging equipment such as cameras, microphones, displays, and ultrasound machines are deployed on the ambulance. Through the FCU2303 industrial-grade smart gateway, information is transmitted, providing real-time, lossless transmission of audio-visual images from the ambulance to the hospital emergency center. This setup offers a high-bandwidth, low-latency, and highly connected secure network, meeting the remote video consultation needs of the ambulance. It aims to secure more time for patients by implementing a rapid rescue and treatment mode where patients essentially “Be in the hospital” upon boarding the ambulance.

In the future, smart ambulances based on 5G technology will undoubtedly provide better full-process services for patients, including pre-diagnosis, during diagnosis, and post-diagnosis.
Forlinx Embedded FCU2303 Smart Gateway, which supports the 5G smart ambulance system, fully leverages the leading advantages of 5G technology, including high bandwidth, low latency, and large connectivity. It will undoubtedly effectively and efficiently guarantee the transmission of information for various medical devices. This will assist medical emergency centers in further improving the efficiency and service level of emergency rescue work, enhancing service quality, optimizing service processes and modes, and winning time for rescuing patients’ lives, thereby better-safeguarding health and life.

2024.05.15 03:10 Silent_Airport_6534 Laptop using external monitor with wrong resolution and Windows using the wrong GPU. Although familiar with these issues it turns out it’s harder to fix than expected.

Hello tech supporters,
TLDR : I'm a fairly capable tech guy myself and am currently having some hard time troubleshoting my girlfriend's laptop. Although those seem like small/easy issues, we've spent many hours trying different solutions, but none had any effect, some behaviors seem even contradictory, and I'm now running out of ideas.
Detailed issues : - External monitor is displayed with a 640x480 resolution when plugged in. It started a few days ago, before that my girlfriend was using the monitor daily without any issue. We share the desk and the monitor and often plug and switch our laptops to it if that makes sense. - The classic, Windows using the CPU integrated graphics as the preferred GPU instead of the dedicated RTX 3050. I actually don't know if this was already the case before the monitor issue started, but it's obviously abnormal and very probably related. For information, my girlfriend was playing a mildly graphic demanding game a few months ago with no issues, so it seems a change appeared otherwise I imagine she couldn't have been able to run the game with CPU graphics.
Solutions we've tried to fix those issues, most and least obvious ones (none changed something whatsoever) : - Updating/reinstalling AMD CPU graphics and dedicated Nvidia GPU's drivers - Specifying the use of Nvidia's GPU as the preferred option in the Nvidia Control Panel - Obviously trying different HDMI cables (which is the only port available on the laptop to plug in an external monitor) - Re-installing Windows 11 with a hard reset of files - Updating battery usage settings to best performances and trying different outlets. The computer was always used while charging. - Updating BIOS and checking graphic options in BIOS (currently "Graphics Device : Switchable Graphics"). - Resetting monitor settings and installing its drivers (didn't know drivers for monitors were a thing before). - De-activiting/activating the external monitor and both GPUs in the device manager.
Especially odd observations : - We've plugged the laptop to a TV and the resolution on it is fine. The CPU graphic was still the one used though. - We've tried plugging different laptops to the monitor and the resolution appeared fine which leads me to think it's not related to the monitor itself and more specifically a software issue on my girlfriend's laptop ? - I've even installed an Ubuntu distrib on a bootable USB key. The monitor's resolution was still wrong but it could be due to the lack of drivers for the Nvidia GPU which I couldn't install since the OS was running as "Try Ubuntu" so actions seemed limited, I admit I didn't dig into it a lot though.
Laptop model : Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3-15ACH6 - type 82K2 Monitor model : LG Flatron E2251VR-BN
Here are some screenshots to illustrate the currently situation
Please be sure that we've tried those solutions, sometimes multiple times, in different orders with different expectations. Since nothing seemed to make a difference, we've tried looking for the most insignificant details/settings that could produce a change, sometimes knowing it would probably make no difference. The goal was mostly to try to narrow down the causes by an trial and error approach and emit hypotheses.
As for now I'm considering switching to Windows 10 since I witnessed many people around me having issues with 11 and suspect it to be somehow responsible. But overall I would prefer being wrong and just realize I forgot to validate a checkbox option somewhere, I'm kinda hopeless at the moment...
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated in any case. Thank you for your help.

2024.05.15 03:00 Glittering_Sea4975 Sudden/New Luba 1 Positioning Issues

Sudden/New Luba 1 Positioning Issues
This past two weeks, my Luba 1000 has been experiencing sudden positioning issues that cause it to leave the defined task area, ending up in the street.
It seemed like the RTK had been nudged, since the path it was following was a shift of the intended map boundaries (red), but I can find no sign that the RTK has been disturbed in any way.
Has anyone else had sudden map boundary or postioning issues? My Luba has been working perfectly for over a year, so I want to be sure I'm aware of the proper troubleshooting and diagnostic procedures before concluding that the hardware or software are damaged.

2024.05.15 02:40 DoodleJake Completely new to Linux but willing to take it for a spin! With the laptop I have, what can I expect from Linux as well as gaming?

Ok so I have a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (original 2012 model). 8gb ram. And a core i7-3667U. It's more than capable of running windows 10 and 11, But honestly I'm not really vibing with Windows anymore.
The version of Linux I was intending on trying was Linux Mint.
I don't need a huge amount of power, I use parsec connected to my desktop pc for things like video editing.
So essentially my question is: What can I expect as a beginner? Any recommended software? What range of games could I theoretically get working? ETC.
Apologies for being very broad with this but I literally have no experience with Linux yet.
(Extra: I have used a steam deck in the past, could I use the laptop normally with steamOS by chance? Any benefits?)

2024.05.15 02:05 MitchMyester23 Do I Need Better Specs?

I recently used the free trial for Premiere Pro. I'm working on a YouTube channel and generally my editing skills have been considered pretty good. Latest video was made with Premiere Pro, before that I was using CapCut.
Unfortunately I had various issues using Premiere that have temporarily turned me away from it. To start, I often edit videos alongside having YouTube open, as either a reference or a source for the content I use in my videos (either screen recording or downloading mp3/mp4 files). When Premiere was open, YouTube didn't crash, per se, but it would revert to a functionality that could be compared to the speed and responsiveness of YouTube in 2005. Upon closing Premiere, reopening, testing a few more times, yes, Premiere being open caused the problem. I'm using Chrome for YouTube if that helps.
In addition to this, Premiere really didn't like a lot of the MP3 files I tried to use. Most of the time I had to convert them to WAV files, or download them as WAV files, which is another annoyance that just doesn't exist on the previous software programs I was using. Some of the MP3 files worked, most didn't, and I couldn't find a connection.
Mostly, the issues with the interface I can handle, it's a new program, it's going to have a learning curve I have to get through. But the issues like the ones above really just turned me away. Oh, and the program did crash once, and my entire computer also crashed and had to restart itself.
I'm using a Gaming Laptop, the specs are: Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 4800H with Radeon Graphics RAM: 16 GB (15.4 GB usable) GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti
I may be dropping Premiere for now, unless I can be convinced otherwise. But with the specs mentioned above, should I be having these strange issues? Should I invest in Premiere again once I've upgraded to a full Gaming PC setup? Or am I really just doing something wrong?

2024.05.15 01:00 Scoopity_scoopp Just got denied to work from Europe

Title states it all. I work in a niche software development environment and the excuse was that our laptops are “geo-locked” so it wouldn’t work outside the country which I think is BS and gonna talk to the people that handle our Azure AD network to see if it’s true. And if it is true gonna talk to cyber security and ask if there’s any real risk if we disable for the UK.
We already use Indian contractors and our data is stored abroad so any data access excuse is out of the window but they knew, I knew that
I just want to quit and find another job as I’ve put my neck out for them but they haven’t for me so far.
But overall this is a wake up call that I need to go the entrepreneurial route but I’m unfortunately only 1 year in so kinda hard to do
Any advice on handling this or any pushback I can give?
Edit: this was a 3 month request not a permanent move lol

Cannabis Delivery GPS

Secure Marijuana Transportation
Tracking vehicles with GPS has been a common practice among a variety of businesses that have automotive assets. Pizza delivery persons, limousines, and trucking companies are only a few of the types of industries that routinely use GPS auto tracking to manage vehicle activity and prevent those company assets from theft or misuse. The process of GPS vehicle monitoring is rather simple:
  • Live GPS is placed on a car
  • The GPS reports real-time vehicle information
  • Vehicle information that includes location, speed, and more is instantly uploaded online
  • Managers can view vehicle activity 24/7 from a phone or computer
Having instant access to the location of a vehicle, historical driving records speeds driven and more is valuable data that can help a business improve routing, auto security, employee efficiency, and many other areas of business related to vehicle activity. For those delivering cannabis, this form of data is especially important because sometimes these delivery vehicles are targeted by thieves.

Transporting Marijuana With Secured Logistics

If you're operating a cannabis delivery business, you're likely aware of the inconsistencies between state and federal laws surrounding cannabis use. These differences create significant challenges, including restrictions on banking. Because many banks can't accept deposits generated from selling cannabis, businesses in the industry are often forced to have more cash on hand than they would prefer. This puts them at risk of theft.
However, businesses transporting cannabis are fighting back by utilizing GPS tracking systems. When you equip your delivery vehicles with GPS monitoring systems, you gain instant access to their location and movement. This allows you to track your vehicles and ensure that your products are being delivered on time and through the best routes.
More importantly, real time GPS tracking provides an added layer of security for your business. With access to real-time location data, you can monitor your vehicles and ensure that they haven't been stolen or compromised. This added layer of security not only protects your assets but also gives you peace of mind knowing that your products are being delivered safely and securely.
In the fast-paced cannabis industry, GPS tracking devices have become an essential tool for businesses looking to remain competitive and secure. By investing in this technology, you can mitigate risks and improve efficiency, ensuring the success of your business in this ever-evolving industry.

Cannabis Company Uses Vehicle Tracking

If you're operating a cannabis delivery business, you can learn from the experience of a grower in Humboldt County, California. By installing GPS tracking devices on each delivery van, they were able to improve delivery times and enhance the client experience. With real-time updates on the location of drivers, they were also able to monitor and optimize their routes for greater efficiency.
In addition, some GPS tracking devices are equipped with panic buttons for added driver safety. This can give your drivers peace of mind while out on deliveries, making them feel safer and more secure.
As the cannabis industry continues to grow and become more competitive, investing in a GPS tracking system can give you a valuable edge. By using this technology, you can maintain compliance, ensure security, and improve the efficiency of your business operations. In the future, GPS tracking may become a standard part of fleet management for cannabis delivery vehicles. But for now, it's an essential tool for success in the fast-paced and ever-evolving cannabis industry.

2024.05.14 23:35 iAtticiOfficial Apex Legends - FPS issues when in dropship or flying + Apex App Crashing

Hi Reddit,
IF YOU READ THIS POST, YOU ARE A HERO! First time making a post on here so hopefully someone from the Apex/PC Community sees and reads this long message. Few days ago, I had a power outage and did not have a surge protector (just built my PC a month ago it's my first time so I'm very novice). I believe since the power outage I have had the following issues. According to run command diagnostics and motherboard BIOS, RAM, VRAM, GPU are registered as normal.
  1. Whenever I go into the firing range my fps will be around 200, leaving a tearing appearance. After 10 seconds or so it adjusts, and flicks to and remains at 240fps, feeling buttery smooth.
  2. When in the dropship and when flying down from the dropship I am getting roughly 160-180fps, and when I land or get close to landing it hits 240fps constant.
I am able to play the game but when I see issues I want to fix them. Unfortunately, in my experience PC's are fragile and will do anything not to work 100% properly, spewing issues at me left and right. My PC specs are high end so I 100% should not be experiencing this. On top of these issues not existing more than a week ago. *Specs will be listed at the bottom of page*
Extra Info Below:
I've made sure I now have up to date motherboard BIOS and NVidia Drivers. A solution I wanted to test out was a software issue perhaps. When I first built my PC a month ago, I installed some software that somehow made Apex (and Apex only) essentially unplayable. I found the software issue out by creating a new and fresh/software free Microsoft windows user and trying to play Apex on that and it was perfect. Fast forward to today's issues, I wanted to see if it could be another weird software issue, so I went to try and do the previous method stated but for some reason software transfers over to the new profile, making me not have to download steam or download apex. On top of that whenever I try and load Apex up, the app crashes/closes before the continue button (before entering lobby), preventing from even trying to test anything out. I wanted to make a clean slate windows user profile to see if it's a software issue, but I have been unsuccessful in creating one that let me test it.
Was hoping to find out from the software issue test but, if it is not a software issue and perhaps a hardware component was minorly messed up from power outage, how would I know for certain?? Or would it be to guess and check, swapping out components until finding out (I have no way of doing this really).I had to factory reset my PC the last issues I had. I really hope I don't have to do that since I am very novice and inexperienced and have been enjoying my PC so far.

2024.05.14 23:33 iAtticiOfficial Apex Legends - FPS issues when in dropship or flying + Apex App Crashing

Hi Reddit,
IF YOU READ THIS POST, YOU ARE A HERO!
2024.05.14 23:26 bvanevery digital tabletop gaming

digital tabletop gaming
Because I have some time on my hands lol, I went looking for board game venues in Asheville NC. There are a variety of foci and business models to them. I came across a photo, which I will leave unattributed, that reminds me of an old idea.

something clunky this way comes
I'm not sure what this giant wooden box they're all sitting around is? Is it static? Is it reconfigurable? Does it have blinkin' doo dads in it? Does it attach to other digital devices in some way? Yes I could ask at the game store I saw the photo, but they're closed today and that would be too easy.
I mean it looks like they drink coffee off of it. Maybe it just holds all their junk, like miniatures and dice and stuff? If so, I would call that a complete waste of space, but maybe others differ.
The old idea, is of an interactive tablet the size of a table, that can be moved around from venue to venue, and people can interact with. I don't know how easy it is to homebrew / cobble together / stitch such a display. Frankly one of my last attempts at 3d graphics consulting in the early 2000s, I lost a gig about such display architectures. I suggested a software rendering approach in an era that was moving into shader language programming. Oh well.
There used to be papers about large scale "printable" paper-like displays, with entrepreneurial possibilities like putting the damn things on cereal boxes as ads. God I hope not. Don't know where that stuff ever went.
There have been various laser projection devices for use with VR, some that would go right into your retina. Others, perhaps you could scan on a table. That would make it some kind of fancy projector. Maybe in the vector graphics display category.
I once saw a US Civil War exhibit in a small museum somewhere, possibly in Kentucky, that did a laser projection onto a physical topographical map. The cost of the project was listed, I'm remembering something like $90k at the time. It was pretty cool with an overhead laser projector pointing downwards. Units with the usual sorts of X's and oval shapes would move around and you could see how the fighting went. I'm thinking the battlefield was Wildcat Mountain? Yeah, the Battle of Camp Wildcat and I wasn't wrong about the alternate name.
I thought I even remembered some commercial attempts to sell some kind of tabletop display. But it's been a long time, like at least a decade.
Meanwhile as I attempt to find players for some kind of "old school, complex, time intensive" board game, I'm finding scheduling to be a primary constraint among adults. Difficult to find people who can set aside 8 to 12 hours to play such games.
Tabletop displays also don't solve problems of limited information or fog of war. You could of course change the display for a single player's available knowledge, but then everyone else would have to look away and not peek. Tractable, but not ideal. One obvious solution is to have people jack in their own laptops, but then the question is, what's the common shared display for?
A tabletop display would make sense for a collaborative game. For instance, you're the party going through a dungeon. Or you're the bridge crew of a starship.

2024.05.14 23:16 agent00bad Linux on laptop with special features

I'm not a avid Linux user since I've mostly used it on VPS and Steam Deck as a software developer and gamer but I've been thinking of installing a Linux distro onto my old gaming laptop but it has a fan mode button on the F5 key and i'm wondering if it would still work or could be enabled when Linux is installed since the only other way i know how to configure the fans are through the BIOS and the preinstalled asus software.
The model is the asus zephyrus m gm501gs.
Thanks for the help!

2024.05.14 22:55 ugleigh_butt Windows not charging.

My laptop has always had charging issues, it's a Dell so of course. It needed a 65Watt AC adaptor to charge better, so I bought one, next day it fell and the metal piece snapped in half. Went on charging like normal with the old one. Old one just stopped working randomly so I bought ANOTHER 65W AC Adapter, because it says it requires specifically that whenever I restart it. Doesn't charge either. My laptop has been at 0% for 2 days, will not charge, and will shut off when unplugged from the charger, despite saying the charger isn't charging it. I spent all my remaining money on this new charger, I've had this computer for years, I cannot afford a new one, I lost my job and have quite literally 8.65 in my bank account. I already will not be able to afford rent this month, and this laptop is my only way of applying to jobs and being in contact with people. How do I fix it. I do not care about specifically what is wrong, only how to fix it. I will answer any questions as best I can, I do not know much of anything about computers or tech, I just can't lose this laptop or I will be on the streets again. If I cannot be fixed, I will simply need to trash it and possibly go to a homeless shelter. Everything else on the PC works fine from what I can tell. Other than being held up by bandaids, it runs stuff, just lags when trying to use it while it is charging. I need this laptop or I am screwed, please someone know something or have a solution, I have nothing else and nowhere to go. I don't know if this is hardware or software, I don't know about computers, I just can't lose this one or I have nothing.

2024.05.14 22:13 Zynir [Suggestion] Seeking Laptop Recommendations and Budget Allocation Advice for $2K Laptop/Desktop Setup

Hello everyone,
I’m a computer engineering student in need of a reliable laptop to handle my coursework and a desktop for gaming and work. Here's what I need in the laptop:
For the desktop, I don’t require high-end gaming capabilities—just something adequate for casual gaming and work tasks.
My total budget for both is under $2,000. I’m looking for laptop recommendations that fit these criteria. Also, how should I allocate my budget between the two devices? What percentage should ideally go towards the laptop to ensure it meets my needs without overspending, given that I also need a decent desktop?
Thank you for your insights and recommendations!
