2024.05.15 05:10 Brilliant_Lifeguard5 A Loop Between Two Cities

A Loop Between Two Cities
I've been a way from reddit a bit, but re-made an account to share an idea.
I really like the idea of extending the green line to BWI, but for how delayed the silver line was I'm not crazy about all that electrified rail having to be laid from Greenbelt to the airport. The MARC also exists, and it just increasing Penn line frequency seems a better argument than building more rail.
But the MARC sucks! It's not exciting, and it doesn't take metro cards. It basically exists only because the DC and Baltimore metros don't touch.
So I thought... what if I purchased MARC lines and disguised it as my own metro?
I looked at the rails the two DC-Baltimore MARC routes take, and if just a connector at the airport were built the two routes would form a loop between union station and BWI.
Thus, I present the Brown Loop
Anticipated existing routes shown
Questions you probably have:
  • Q: Why Brown?
  • Q: Would any new rail have to be constructed?
    • A: Yes, but new rail would only be needed at BWI; the rest of the system already exists. This map includes a few infill stations (Ex: Hannover, Fort Lincoln), though these could be built after the line is created.
  • Q: What becomes of the MARC lines?
    • A: The Penn line is shortenned to a Newark-BWI route, while the Camden line becomes a Baltimore metro line.
    • Alternatively, Wikipedia says the Baltimore light rail is standard guage, so perhaps the rail between Camden Yards and Hannover (a new station) could become part of the light rail system instead?
    • Also alternatively, if the two metros linking at BWI is good enough for inter-city travel, the Camden line could but cut altogether.
  • Q: How would payment/stations work?
    • A: During a transitional period a conductor would stand outside each train and tap your metro card to a handheld POS device before letting you board. Over time the former MARC stations would have turnstiles and fences installed to require tapping a metro card to enter the platform, much like a normal metro station. There would be a walk required to get from one line to another at interchanges (the MARC/metro interchanges aren't interiorlly linked), but this seems expensive to solve and not that big a deal.
  • Q: Would MARC trains be used on this loop?
    • A: The existing rolling stock would continue to be used, at least at first. It would still be a good idea to electrify the rails eventually, though this could be in the form of overhead wire rather than a third rail.
    • Alternatively, the Brown Line would (presumably) run more frequently than the MARC, and so could get away with smallelighter passenger cars, and therefore would not need as large of an engine. Perhaps a battery-electric engine could pull unpowered metro cars? Metro cars aren't quite standard guage, but are close enough that modifying them doesn't seem beyond WMATA capabilities. There's also supposed to be new metro cars in a few years, so there will soon be old ones to spare...
  • Q: This line seems to go out pretty far from DC...
    • A: Yes! And for that reason it would be shared by DC and Baltimore. Ideally, the Brown Loop would appear on both city's metro maps, and accept both city's transit cards. I think it won't be too long (decades) until DC and Baltimore are seen as "one city", much like Dallas and Fort Worth are seen (outside the metroplex lol). Having continuous mass transit across the whole area seems like it'll only become more needed with time.
I'm going to go to bed now I just wanted to share.

2024.05.15 04:05 patrick43809 [Landlord, US, GA] Tenant wants a new door code and I live out of state.

I'm a landlord in Georgia but I live in Washington DC. I have a tenant there that wants the electronic door lock changed (prior to them taking occupancy I asked what they wanted and let them know it wouldn't be able to be changed easily) because they feel it's too simple. I don't want to give them the master code to change it but also a flight down there for no reason other than to change the combo isn't great. Is there a good third option in not thinking of? I was thinking of calling a locksmith but that's the best I have. Thanks in advance for the help! I just found this Reddit and can't believe I hadn't thought of joining this earlier!!

Angela Alsobrooks wins contentious Democratic Senate primary in Maryland
Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks (D) has won the Democratic primary for Maryland’s open Senate seat, according to a projection from Decision Desk HQ.
Alsobrooks beat out fellow Democrat Rep. David Trone (Md.) in what had become a tumultuous race. Just days earlier, an Emerson College Polling/The Hill/DC News Now found the two in a dead heat.
She will make history if she wins in November, becoming the first Black woman to represent the Old Line State in the Senate.
Alsobrooks had the backing of Trone’s fellow Maryland congressman, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D), and other top Democrats, including Sens. Chris Van Hollen (Md.) and Chris Murphy (Conn.). The Washington Post editorial board also endorsed her over Trone.

I'd love to make reservations one day for a brunch buffet in NYC, but I want to know if there's anything truly amazing out there!
Not sure if anyone has done the brunch buffet at the Four Seasons in Washington DC where it's super fancy and there's like unlimited multiple varieties of smoked fish and cheeses and meats and desserts, but if anyone knows something along those lines in NYC, I'd love to know!

2024.05.15 03:03 Apex0630 Election Year Fears

Hello, I'm (18m) pretty worried about pride this year. This June will be my first June spent in the US after finishing my first year of undergrad. I'm gonna be spending most of the Summer in Washington DC and I'm looking forward to partake in some Pride and other gay events across the city.
Here's where my fears come in. The FBI just released warnings about how terrorist groups could be targeting Pride and LGBT events. I'm extra worried about being in DC, being election year in the capital, as some far-right radical or other extremist might take action. I know pride has generally been safe and the police, if anything, are more of an issue but I hate to say that I'm still a bit on edge regarding everything. Especially as this election and the current political climate are so intense.
I'm just upset cause this is my first Pride and I don't want to spend it nervous and anxious about my safety. I guess I'm posting this more in hopes of seeing if other people share my concerns or could say something to alleviate any worries. Anyways, as June approaches

2024.05.15 02:49 PhoenixMori 38 [M4F] Washington DC - Let's get high, listen to records and laugh our asses off! Kind soul seeks same.

Hey reddit! I'm a 38 year old latin guy from Washington DC. Honesty is the best policy so I'll make it known now that I'm not looking for platonic friends, I'm looking for a romantic partner. Buckle up, because I'm about to unveil why I may or may not be the right partner for you in a classic listicle style that all you youngin's love.
About Me:
You'll never believe number 6!
  1. I'm a bit of a stoner. It's true, your boy loves himself some marijuana. (In fact, I just did a 20mg edible) I endeavor to never let it take over my life, but it aids a lot in #2 on this list. I'm also not a stranger to the very occasional mushroom trip.
  2. I'm a true creative. Left to my own devices in an empty room, I would constantly create new things. Whether that be drawing, writings, photography, music or stoner ideas. It's my true nature to be a creative and to stifle that part of myself makes me pretty sad. Fortunately, I get to create on a daily basis. which brings me to..
  3. I have the kindest heart. I see life through rose colored glasses, some may say. I just believe in the good in people. I think most people are good and those that are bad are redeemable. Whether someone is ultra religious, a different political affiliation, good, bad, ugly, whatever...I believe in getting to know them for myself and making my own decision of them. As a friend I always stick by my friends, no matter what. Friends in my life are friends for life, even if we lose touch. There is a downside to all this...it's that sometimes people take advantage of me. I don't care. When confronted with the choice to be loving or to be cruel or apathetic, I will always choose loving.
  4. I make people laugh. Comedy and jokes have always been a part of me. Maybe it's the fact that I'm a middle child and craved attention or the fact that I grew up in a city where I had to be quick on my feet, but I love to make people laugh. This is best done in person but there can be humor over the internet too. :)
  5. I don't take myself too seriously. I'm a talented person in my field and it's important for me to let go of my ego. There isn't a single person that I can't learn from and at my best I'm always open to listen to people's opinions of me or my creative work.
  6. I see beauty in everyone, including you. If you hadn't guessed by now, I'm a photographer. I'm into portraits and I value my connection with people one-on-one and I think that's what makes me a talented portrait photographer. I often hear people talk about the things they hate about themselves but try to reflect to them their true beauty. The beauty that was always there and that they need to be reconnected to.
  7. I'm culturally Latino. My parents are from El Salvador, but I was born and raised in DC. I have the experience of being born into a family of immigrants and understand the duality of living in two different worlds. While Spanish was my first language, it is not what I consider to be my native tongue. While I understand all Spanish, all my Spanish is food related.
  8. I've done the self work. It's true. I'm not a man that punches walls, gets drunk and cries, will cheat on you, lie to you or a myriad of other things that toxic people do. I am not without faults, of course, but I have worked my demons out for the most part. I'm very self-aware and open to criticism and change.
  9. I'm honest 99.5% of the time. Anyone professing to be honest 100% of the time is a liar. Ask me directly and I'll tell you my last big lie.
  10. I know where I want to be in life. I'm close to getting there too. I've been at it for 13 years now and I feel that success is imminent. Will you be a part of it?
So what are you waiting for? Dust off that old keyboard, pound away at a few keys, and get ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure brought to you by (as they said in my day) the world wide web.

FC by me 5'9'' 144 lbs Bleached, Slicked back Brown Lanky

Personality

Quiet and reclusive by nature, Jasper often keeps to himself, and tries to limit every interaction he has to the absolute minimum. Having a shrewd mind, he doesn't waste words or reveal more about himself or his goals than what he deems necessary. Being stubborn and a boy of focus, Jasper's resolve never wavers when he sets his mind on something, even in the face of uncertainty.
His silence shields the depths of his emotions and thoughts, but beneath it lies a burning determination fueled by a desire for vengeance and retaliation against the injustices he sees and the grudges he holds. It is this relentless pursuit of retribution that drives him forward, and it can't be extinguished by doubt or fear. Jasper walks a solitary path, but the boy is haunted by loneliness and is unsure of where he belongs in the world.

Right Now:

As Jasper stepped off the bus, the cacophony of New York City assaulted his senses, a stark contrast to the serene solitude of the Pacific Northwest. He had traveled far, leaving behind his entire life... Most kids would be afraid, or at the very least hesitant. But not him. With a heavy backpack slung over his shoulder, he started navigating the bustling streets with quiet determination, making his way to Camp Half-Blood.
A taxi ride and a bit of walking later, Jasper could see Half-Blood Hill ahead, the entrance to a sanctuary hidden away from the chaos of the world. Jasper's heart quickened as he approached, but he stopped briefly and took a deep breath. He wouldn't let his anticipation change his demeanor, not in the slightest.
He had been told about this place: a haven for demigods like himself, where they could find refuge and belonging. He sought neither, but for his purposes, a place like this would do just fine. With a resolute step forward, Jasper braced himself for whatever lay ahead, knowing that this is where his journey would truly begin.

👋 what type of jumping spider is this??
I found two of these in my room, and I somehow managed to get both of them in the same bag. I am very lucky since they jump. They both have two forward facing eyes, kinda adorable if they weren't so intimidating, and yellow stripes with a larger brown stripe that extends from their head to the tip of their butt. I live in central Washington near a lake. Thank you!

2024.05.15 01:14 DeemieDeemz 26 [M4F] US/East Coast - Looking for someone to spend time with

Hi there! I didn’t think I’d ever make one of these again. But here I am..
I’m searching for someone to gain a connection with. And someone who will respond to me.
Some things about me is I currently work as a commercial fisherman, I love playing video games. Either on pc, my ps5 and switch. Some games range from Destiny 2, HellDivers 2, animal crossing, any and all Mario and Pokémon games. I love comedy, action, adventure and some anime movies/tv-shows.
I’m a huge animal lover, if you show me pictures of your cat and/or dogs, my heart will automatically be won. I’m a sucker for a furry face. I’m not so much religious anymore. I’m standing at a whopping 6’2-6’3 with brown hair and hazel-ish eyes. I do have facial hair. I tend to grow it out a bit, but then get annoyed and trim it back down. I am certified chef, I work in a food truck with my family during the summers, we used to have our own restaurant where I was the head chef. When it’s not summer, I keep the passion alive by baking and cooking at home constantly.
What I’m looking for is someone between 19-30. But as long as you are 18+ Im more open than most. I’d love someone to be a considerate, passionate, kind and understanding. If you are clingy, needy, or anything like that, you gain a big plus with me. If you actually answer and show an effort to talk to me. And EVEN BIGGER plus. If you have the same interests, or at least some of them, it would help greatly. Being upfront and not sugarcoating things I appreciate. Distance isn’t much of an issue. Sometimes I enjoy a good long drive.
I’ve had many ghost me before due to their judgmental ways. I will give the fair warning before. I am not the smallest person. I’m a bit heavier set. But I’m working on it.
Reply with something you like, something we could have in common.
Let’s get to know each other and see if we match. I look forward to talking 🩵
