I am looking to change careers, and I'm very interested in working in the SmartHome/IoT industry. I have extensive experience in tech support, particularly on-site desktop support, and a background in software development. I'm actually most interested in doing consultations/installations — coming to someone's home to evaluate their needs, and looking around to give an estimate of what kinds of devices and features could be installed for what cost, and then coming back with the tech to get everything connected. I'd probably then also be responsible for troubleshooting/calibrating for existing clients, and maybe a bit of training to get them used to their new devices. I used to be really interested in innovation when I was younger, but these days I think most of the tech I imagined as a kid has already hit the market.
I'm posting here to ask whether anyone does this kind of work, how you got into it, what the pay is like in your area, etc. Any information at all would be helpful. I'm not married to the idea of installations, it just sounds like something I already have the skill set for. I'd be interested to learn anything about resources that could help me get into the industry. I've seen comments on similar posts from long ago that say it's an easy industry to get in to, and that may be true, but I haven't found anything paying nearly as well as my current job (which does not pay all that well). Labor unions were heavily under government control, and democratic unions were limited to female workers in the textile industry. However, the atmosphere changed with the June 1987 Uprising. Popular discontent was growing among the emerging middle class and college students as the military government refused to hold presidential elections through popular vote. Instead, the junta legitimized their government through an electoral college, denying the majority of the population a say in politics. In this atmosphere of discontent, Park Jong-cheol, a college student activist, was arrested and tortured to death by police, triggering a popular uprising against the military dictatorship. Fig 1. Iconic photo of June Uprising As popular protests demanding direct election of the presidency and a democratic constitution overwhelmed security forces, the military dictatorship was forced to compromise with the liberal opposition and adopt a new democratic constitution. This gave birth to a more democratic political system known as the 1987 system or Sixth Republic, under which South Korea still operates. This atmosphere of liberalization and democratization provided space for workers to organize. 2. Start of Uprising: Workers in Hyundai organize The June democratization struggle came to an end with Representative Roh Tae-woo, the presidential candidate of the Junta, announcing the June 29 Declaration and promising a direct presidential election and constitutional reform. However, from July onwards, workers launched vigorous organized actions, demanding the establishment of democratic labor unions, wage increases, and improvements in working conditions. The July 8-9, 1987 labor struggle began at the Hyundai Group. On July 5, Hyundai Engine workers formed a union, and on July 16, tensions escalated as documents declaring the formation of a labor union by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard workers were confiscated. In response to workers' uprising, the chairman of Hyundai Chung Ju-young declared, "Until dirt gets into my eyes, unions will not be permitted." However, the workers responded, "Then we will put dirt in your eyes," and proceeded to form unions. Even the mighty Hyundai, one of Korea's largest conglomerates, could not resist the relentless tide of history. In late July, the democratic labor movement expanded to the whole of Yeongnam region, as major factories in the Masan-Changwon area joined the uprising. On August 17th and 18th, over 30,000 workers from the Ulsan Hyundai Group Labor Union (currently Hyundai Motor Union) staged a sit-in protest. Workers from six Hyundai Group affiliates staged a united demonstration while wielding heavy equipment. Faced with protesters wielding heavy equipment, the police abandoned firing tear gas altogether. Workers in Daewoo rise up: death of Lee Seok Kyu The Daewoo Shipbuilding labor union, established on August 11th, began negotiations with the company. On the 22nd, during the negotiation process, the union representatives, frustrated by the company's insincerity and stalling tactics, revised their initial demands. They proposed a basic salary increase of 20,000 won, an increase in site allowances by 20,000 won, and the introduction of a 10,000 won family allowance. However, the company rejected this proposal. In anger, the workers attempted to enter the hotel, but were beaten and chased to the beach by the Baekgoldan, a special police unit. During their second attempt to enter the hotel, the police suggested that they would allow a peaceful march, but then suddenly fired tear gas at them. In the chaos, Lee Seok-gyu was hit directly in the right chest by a tear gas canister. He was transported to the hospital but passed away at around 3:30 PM. In the aftermath of his death, enraged colleagues sealed off the funeral parlor where his body lay, demanding, "We don't need money. Bring back Lee Seok-gyu!" Prominent figures such as Lee So-sun, mother of Jeon Tae-il, and lawyers Roh Moo-hyun and Lee Sang-soo arrived, forming a funeral preparation committee. Negotiations between the union and the company resulted in a compromise on various issues, including a wage increase, but workers demanded accountability for Lee's death and refused to compromise. Despite the union's decision to postpone the funeral until their demands were met, pressure from the government and the company intensified, leading to confrontations between the workers and authorities. On August 28th, amidst rain, the funeral procession finally proceeded to the Daewoo Shipbuilding Stadium, where over 20,000 people attended the funeral. However, upon reaching their destination, the procession was met with police brutality, resulting in arrests and the confiscation of Lee’s body by the authorities. Subsequently, a planned memorial event was forcibly cancelled, and the government cracked down on participants. 4. Government crackdown and the spread of uprising Following this raid on Lee Seok-gyu's funeral, the government began a massive crackdown. On September 4th, riot police were deployed to disperse workers protesting at Daewoo Motor and Hyundai Heavy Industries, resulting in large-scale arrests. From September onwards, labor protests in the manufacturing sector gradually subsided. The military junta launched a public relations campaign, accusing workers of being influenced by external forces and attempting to isolate them from wider democratization movement. Employers responded with measures such as temporary closures of workplaces. Despite these efforts, labor activism spread to small and non-manufacturing businesses in the Seoul metropolitan area and Gyeongin region, with strikes continuing in various sectors such as transportation, mining, office work, sales, and services. During the July-August-September labor struggles, workers primarily demanded an 8-hour workday, labor law reform, protection of labor rights, guaranteed freedom to form unions, abolition of blacklists, ensuring the right to survival, improving working conditions, and raising low wages. These demands highlight that the labor struggle was fundamentally an economic democratization movement. 5. Aftermath: Underrated uprising As a result of the labor struggle, by the end of December 1987, the number of labor unions had increased to 4,103 (from 2,675 in 1986), with 1,267,457 union members (up from 1,035,890 in 1986). Of the 3,749 labor disputes in 1987, 3,341 occurred during July-August-September. Above all, during this period, workers began to perceive labor unions as beneficial organizations for workers and started to understand the ideology and function of labor unions. They also began to explore effective ways to overcome conflicts and confrontations between labor and management. The 1987 labor struggle is considered the first large-scale expression of worker discontent, achieving outcomes such as the formation of democratic labor unions, democratization of non-regular workers' unions, and significant wage increases. This was, of course, one of the political effects of the June Uprising. Workers, who had been suppressed and oppressed by the strong repression of the junta government, began to actively assert their demands in a political environment where some degree of freedom was allowed. Subsequently, this movement for the establishment of labor unions led to the creation of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union in 1989, and the National Council of Trade Unions in 1990, setting up the scene for the series of major labor struggles and achievement in 1990s. Despite these achievements and contribution to the democratization of South Korea, 87 Labor Struggle tends to be underrated and considered merely an epilogue to 1987 democratization. This is because of class divide shown in regard to how it was perceived by the wider democratization movement. The liberal opposition led by Kim Young-sam, urged workers to exercise restraint rather than politically exploiting the situation. This left the resolution of the conflicts to the junta government. Additionally, the middle class distanced themselves from the labor struggles. They were concerned that heir achievements from the June Uprising might be undermined. They feared too much chaos could result in counter-coup by the right-wing junta as it had been in 1960-1961 Second Republic and 1980 Seoul spring. Moreover, the June 29 Declaration came during a period of economic boom characterized by low oil prices, low interest rates, and a low dollar value, which lessen the need for the rising middle class to pursue labor movement. As a result, the memory of 87 Labor Struggle was relegated to an auxiliary uprising of larger 1987 democratization, foreshadowing the marginalization of labor still prevalent in modern South Korea. |

Recently enlisted into the army with an mos that requires secret clearance and in the dep waiting to ship. At the time I didn’t realize it but when he was asking me questions about my employment history and references and residence history that was the sf86 he told me it was just an enlistment package that everyone has to do. I did not fill anything out myself or on paper he did it all on his computer and asked me verbally.
I made him aware already of experimental marijuana usage over a year and a half ago but I am sure he didn’t put it on there since he didn’t want me mentioning it to Meps obviously. I was only made aware that it was the sf86 after asking him because I thought I would fill it out at a later date.
I don’t want to go into my army career and possibly get an upgraded clearance or polygraph and have it ruin my future endeavors.
I’ve already tried asking him to change it when I finally realized he told me there was nothing he can do and was just told that “everything is good to go” and “marijuana usage is the least concern with a security clearance”
How can i make this right, i possibly won’t get a interview since it’s a secret clearance do I have to continue with the lie until I possibly get an upgraded clearance to explain to an interviewer will I get in trouble for admitting this information? I grew up during the war on terror, and when it was my turn to enlist, I saw the US staying in a certain country after the guy they were going after was already dead, yet the government decided we should stay there to "nation build" . After an extensive US history class where I realized this wasn't the first time the US invaded a nation and stayed, despite nobody wanting them there, both the occupied countries populace, and the common American, I thought the people who joined to support that were either desperate or murders. Every redneck in my school who wanted to enlist in the ground forces would talk about how they wanted to go kill some "sand nig**rs" . Everyone else who enlisted in the other forces were both desperate and of average to below average intelligence. Every sporting event I have to stand up and salute these literal t*rrorists who go across the world just to secure petroleum and other...things. I think they're disgusting. I'm not even a pacifist. I understand the need for a military for defense. The U.S. military however, are fucking evil. They dropped agent orange on civilians that were their own allies and then lied about it which still effects infants today. They bomb the middle east constantly, killing kids and it has nothing to do with actual defense of the country, just its "interests". They want to justify it, or act like these poor soldiers were duped into it ohhh the baby birds were so poor. No I saw them cheer it on with vigor then talk down to "civilians" when they were in and our. I think the entire thing is disgusting and a farce.l and I don't respect them at all. I didn't even want to join to fix computers for these assholes. I'd be contributing to the murder machine. Hi. Im a 17 year old student from India and Ive been recently admitted into the computer science major at Virginia Tech in the US. For the past 2 years I've worked and put together a pretty strong portfolio which has got me through this college. I have, however, recently received my grade 12 board exam marks and while I have performed well in the subject of CS(89/100), my worst grade has surprisingly come out to be in math (70/100). Being that proficiency in math is a very important factor for success in the computer science field, and the course at Virginia tech for all four years includes 20-25% of math (which becomes very challenging in later years), should I commit to virginia tech? Over the past year or so, I have not received a great grade in math and I think if I try I can do it. Recently. I upgraded to Windows 11. I don't know a lot of things about it because I have been a Windows 8.1 user for a long time now. and I want to give you guys my pros and cons with it since I made the upgrade. the pros I like are the UI for Windows 11. it's not like Windows 8.1 with a touchscreen. but it still had a desktop mode on Windows 8.1. and it was more faster for me since I switched. My game performance decreased. but it was fine since it was like 5-10 frames down. but it's fine. and I love the sounds of Windows 11. Windows 8.1 sounds were not as cool as Windows 11. but nothing beats the old windows sounds though. now here are the cons. I don't like bloatware automatically on the computer. I like a fresh install with no bloatware on it. and you can't customize the taskbar. it sucks as I love customing my taskbar on Windows 7 when I was little and you should do it on Windows 11 too. and you can't see the lock screen quick status sadly too. and there is no saved search on there. and that's what I think. the main reason why I switched is because it does not get updates anymore and I am at a big security risk for it and it is getting old so I switched. and that's why I like Windows 11: not great not bad.

I recently posted about frustration with the anxiety of younger kids these days. There are a lot of people giving fair reasons for the anxiety many talking about social media and cell phones.
I’ve read articles recently about this that talk about how you can correlate the rise of things like anxiety, depression, self harm, and suicide with the increase of cell phone usage, especially wine younger kids. Interestingly, one of the articles I read talked about how everyone locked their kids down from going outside and making sure they know where they are all the time, but everyone forgot about the fact that they let them looae on the Internet, which shows them everything. For example everyone was so worried about predators, but most sexual predators have moved online and that is where they are finding their victims I feel like we did a social experiment with these kids and it’s worked out really badly. So my question to Gen X, would you be willing to pull your kids off-line? Or for older Gen X could you tell your kids to keep their kids off-line? Would you be willing to not give them cell phones? What are you willing to do to deal with this real problem
Should also say I read an article in the New York Times about a school that was trying to ban cell phones, and it was the parents that pushed back because they wanted to be in touch with their children at all times. Their reason, of course, was school shootings, which while tragic are still, very unlikely to happen, but also the law enforcement people said they don’t want kids to be on their cell phones because they should be hiding and not talking and also they need to be listening to teachers about what to do to stay safe, which sadly is part of teacher training now.

I've read many posts in this subreddit objecting to Sunday's philosophy on the basis that Sunday's ideals deprive other inhabitants of Penacony of their free will. I think that this does not strike at the heart of why one should object to Sunday's principles. I happen to have some formal training on the subject, so I will try my best to explain why Sunday's beliefs are objectionable. It is important to not simply get the direction of our opinions correct, but also the reason for believing the way we do correct as well.In this post, I will address>! Sunday's !
A key assumption I make here is that we agree with>! Sunday!!Sunday !
Decomposing Sunday's Philosophy: Two principles
Sunday's philosophy can be broken down into two main principles: (1) people should not have to suffer because of their bodily constitution/environment/wealth; and (2) people should have the freedom to use their free time however they like, to achieve their own goals. I'll refer to (1) as the "Firefly principle", and (2) as the "Weekend principle".Intuitively, we may find that there is nothing wrong with these two principles I've mentioned. This is why we might feel like we should agree with Sunday's ideals. How do we justify our feelings using robust academic concepts?
We can look at this through the idea of "negative" and "positive" liberty by scholar Isiah Berlin. This is the idea that freedom can be defined in two forms: (1) freedom from interference by others (including the environment); and (2) freedom to do things by being empowered with the means to do a given thing.
Negative freedom and the Firefly principle
We'll start with negative freedom and how it is promoted by the "Firefly principle". Basically, Sunday's argument is that people will be more free if they are removed from constraints of health, social status and wealth. Intuition suggests that this is correct, and we are right to follow that intuition. No one should have suffer more than others because they're born into worse circumstances. The famous social justice philosopher John Rawls would say that this suffering due to circumstances not of our own making is arbitrary and unfair.People affected by their circumstances enjoy less freedom than others because they need to work hardework longecope with more challenges in order to simply live. This extra strain, from factors they cannot control, can be considered interference on a given person. They are forced to suffer the reductions in resources (time, money, etc.) in order to deal with the interference. I call this the Firefly principle because Firefly is the example Sunday uses when talking about this. Firefly is forced to deal with Entropy Loss Syndrome inherent to her circumstances of birth against her will, and has stated that she'd lead a far different life if she weren't bound to her circumstances. The way these circumstances of health, social status and wealth affect a person, against their will, directly contradicts the idea of negative liberty and being free from interference.
On the other hand, Sunday's proposal of removing this factors is convincing because we can see that it really increases the negative freedom of all people. They can reclaim resources that would otherwise be lost to the effects of interference from their circumstances of (lacking) health, social status and wealth. Assuming that we all believe that a greater freedom is preferable to a more limited one, it is clear that Sunday's philosophy, or at least the Firefly principle, is desirable.
In sum, the injustice of this arbitrariness makes us feel that the constraints of health, social status and wealth are morally bad; it is why we feel repulsed by it and in turn attracted to Sunday's ideas.
Positive Freedom and the Weekend principle
We move on to the idea of positive freedom and how we get more of it by following the Weekend principle. The one line that is most striking to most players is Sunday's example of an eternal succession of weekends to replace the working week. This is actually an extreme example which has overshadowed the underlying political position that Sunday holds, which led him to say such a thing. Sunday just wants to give people more resources -- in terms of time -- so that they may be free to pursue their life goals/ambitions. In political science, we call this the "life plan": it refers to what people want to do with their lives, given the resources that they have.The relationship between the Weekend principle and positive freedom is a simple one. Being given time empowers one (i.e. increases one's positive freedom) because one has access to more resources to accomplish more of what they want. Again, intuitively, we see this as a good thing. We want people to be able to better pursue their dreams, to do what they want to do. To do things requires resources, and Sunday's proposal frees up more resources for people to use on their life goals.
Sunday's problem -- Unilateralism
There is, in fact, nothing wrong with Sunday's philosophy insofar as we consider these two principles. It is the reason that March and Himeko mention that it is difficult to refute Sunday's philosophy in the scene right before the first time you fight Dominicus. If we appreciate freedom and believe it to be desirable for all, Sunday's proposal is morally consistent with our want and appreciation of widespread freedoms.We set aside the question of whether something done in a dream is as real as something done in reality. It is my belief that the dream/reality thing muddles the scholarly debate regarding Sunday's philosophy, since it is conventionally difficult for one to believe that something done in a dream is more significant that something done in reality. That sort of discussion is probably better left to students of philosophy, who can better argue about the significance of dreams and reality, rather than students of political science. I will deal strictly with the political implications of Sunday's philosophy.
The main problem with Sunday's philosophy is unilateralism. People have been right to point out that Sunday "did not ask for consent". In scholarly terms, we call this despotic/undemocratic behavior. Sunday has not consulted with anyone; he has not engaged in public deliberation; he is using power to enforce the system of government he wants.
Lack of consent is a big issue of course, but a greater concern is dictatorship. Sunday claims that he will be the only person awake, or something along those lines, but it is really a fancy way of saying that he will be sole dictator to dreamland, albeit a utopian one. Ancient philosophers like Plato and Aristotle might actually agree with Sunday's ideas: they had a deep distrust of the follies of the masses, and would rather a capable hand steer the ship of state. This is likely the role Sunday envisions himself in. That is, Sunday sees himself as the enlightened person who will manage paradise in its inhabitants' stead.
The problem arises from the fact that there is no democratic consultation. Classic arguments against dictatorships will apply to Sunday: what happens if he makes an error in judgment? What if he is unable to adequately respond to peoples' needs, even with the power and networking of The Family and its members combined? These are very pragmatic issues that any ruling organization will face, which I imagine will be an even greater problem for Sunday's lonesome.
To tie this back to our objective of promoting freedom, we observe that under Sunday's arrangement, no-one is guaranteed their freedom under Sunday's dictatorship. One may consider themselves free when Sunday's management aligns with their own interests and objectives, but we cannot guarantee the continuity of this alignment into the future. Those who have their goals misaligned with Sunday's vision of utopia will find themselves necessarily unfree, and with no recourse to alter, replace or escape Sunday's government. The prospect of becoming this group of people who are not adequately represented by Sunday undermines Sunday's entire project of increasing the freedom of the weak.
Conclusion (or TL;DR I guess)
Not only does Sunday face significant problems in running Penacony as its sole manager, he also runs the risk of being unrepresentative due to his unilateralism. Inhabitants of Penacony cannot be assured that Sunday will remain a benevolent ruler.We know that he would likely be one because we have glimpses into his mind through the omniscient viewpoint of the player. However, no-one else in the story can be sure that Sunday will remain a responsive governor of Penacony. Further, there are no accountability mechanisms to depose Sunday and replace him with another leader should he turn out to be tyrannical or incompetent down the road.
In the field of Political Science, this is the problem of centralizing governmental powers. Generally, we want a government that can respond to the needs of its people. Many systems of government will try to avoid putting too much power in a single person, such that there may be checks and balances that will provide some way for people to hold government accountable for their actions and competence. Being able to choose one's government and its policies is a very important freedom. Sunday's benevolent dictatorship fails this requirement.
So how do we fix this? I highlighted the Firefly principle and the Weekend principle because they cohere very closely to real life ideas of socialism. The idea that people should be free from their circumstances, and should be free to apply themselves to whatever life plans they wish to pursue are key tenets of socialism. The only difference is that under socialism, people will decide societal priorities and use of social resources together in democratic fashion. It's entirely fine when people decide, out of their own volition, that they should use resources in a certain way that enhances their freedom. It is, however, problematic when this decision is done unilaterally, such as in Sunday's philosophy.
Outside of his dictatorial tendencies, Sunday really promotes some classic socialist ideas that are intended to address the moral badness of society's failure in addressing social inequalities and peoples' needs for self-fulfillment. He just needs more time to think over his philosophy and execute on it in a manner that is more democratic.
As a final word and to provide some further reading for those that have become interested in political science analysis, I recommend reading "Why not socialism" by scholar G.A. Cohen for a political-philosophical justification of Sunday's philosophy. It's a pretty short read (~20 pages?) and will help us better understand our intuitive agreement with Sunday's philosophy.

Sent out hundreds of applications and got interviews here and there, but no luck getting hired. It was honestly such a draining experience. I couldn’t even get hired for a position paying 45-50k a year and a lot of them were customer service based roles, very entry level. Fast forward to now, I got hired to be an ‘engineer’ but the role is more so a project management role. Absolutely no experience in the field and they are willing to train me. One thing I learned about obtaining a job is it’s all about who you know and if the timing is right. The guy whos position I am taking over got promoted and I happen to know someone within the company which definitely helped. One in-person interview and three weeks later they sent me an offer, which definitely caught me off guard. Nervous to start to say the least, but definitely excited and motivated to get my professional career underway. Wish me luck!

I am genuinely so sorry for how exhaustingly long this post is. Truly just looking for outside observations. Feel free to ask questions or state opinions.
Last September, my (27F) boyfriend (37M) became hooked on trading cryptocurrencies. At the time, I was working hellacious hours (3am-1pm) doing manual labor and he had quit his job in May after a tree fell through the roof of our house. He begins to tell me about “so many life changing opportunities” with the season in the crypto market that “wouldn’t last more than a couple weeks, maximum a month.”
Within a few days, he is glued to the screen 16-20hrs a day, eating maybe once a day, most times skipping days, sleeping maybe 2-4hrs, not exercising our Doberman and only letting him out to potty. Right off the bat I’m thinking, “Oh this is obsessive, surely he’s making good money putting in this much effort. I should make sure he’s eating at the very least.” I start cooking more meals, walking them to his office and eating beside him. He barely picked at the food, but would finally get around to finishing it an hour or more later, which is completely abnormal.
Day after day, week after week, I’m working, coming home exhausted, cooking, wanting to relax and shoot the shit with him, maybe watch something or take the dog for a walk? Conversation between us didn’t exist outside the topic of all the “coins” he was trading, so I was just in the house looking for things to occupy myself with. 3 weeks in (beginning October now), I’m starting to have some feelings about not being paid attention to, given the time of day for chats or downtime or quite honestly any back and forth. Sex wasn’t even on the table (complete opposite for our normal reality).
I communicate to him that I’m getting concerned about the behavior, and that I basically feel like a house mate that is just there to take care of the homely duties. He frustratingly explains to me that “I can’t see the opportunity or value in what he’s doing, and that he’s already made ~$5k, but he’ll try to create more balance between us because he recognizes there’s been a level of abandonment.”
Of course I’m happy to hear there will be a change, not to mention that he’s happy doing what he’s doing + making money on it. Fast forward a couple more weeks — nothing has changed. I’m beginning to feel like a body in the house, operating with no real purpose other than upkeep of things. I express this to him, he gets bent out of shape because “he has to be ultra present to see what/when to buy and sell, and that I’m failing to see that he’s doing this for financial freedom for us and our future.” I rationalize and put my thoughts and feelings aside.
One weekend (late October), I actually decide to go out and end up running into someone I haven’t seen in 10yrs. We chat about life, have a drink, yadda yadda, exchange numbers and I go home. Fast forward 2 weeks, we meet up and I make a terrible decision that has screwed our relationship. I felt/feel like dogshit about it, he kicks me out, and we break it off. 1.5months later (December), he (partner) emails me, we meet at his house and talk things over for 1/2 of the day, and resume life as it was.
Finally, fast forward to late March of this year — he begins moderately trading again but with boundaries. However, day by day the screen time increases, and the regard for reality outside of it diminishes, and he practically only leaves the computer to use the restroom. Here we are, in mid-May, and I’m questioning AITAH for feeling abandoned again after he was the one who took me back after the foul, selfish act I committed.
Long story short: I’m with my partner for a year, he gets aggressively addicted to crypto trading and ignores reality outside of it for 2 months, I make the shitty decision to get attention elsewhere after a while, I get kicked out, reached back out to, we get back together, now he’s back to a similar level of trading. AITAH for feeling abandoned and questioning value of the relationship?
