2024.05.13 22:51 adventurepaul E-commerce Industry News Recap 🔥 Week of May 13th, 2024

Hi - I'm Paul and I follow the e-commerce industry closely for my Shopifreaks E-commerce Newsletter. Each week I post a summary recap of the week's top stories, which I cover in depth with sources in the full edition. Let's dive in...
___
STAT OF THE WEEK: Kohl's sales have shrunk by $2.3B since 2019. During that same period of time, the company lost 1.3M customers who no longer shop with the retailer.
___
BigCommerce is exploring a sale after attracting takeover interest, according to sources who chose to remain anonymous due to the confidentiality of the information. The sources said that BigCommerce asked investment bank Qatalyst Partners to solicit interest from potential buyers that include private equity firms, but that the discussions are at an early stage and no deal is certain.
___
Squarespace announced that it will be going private in a $6.9B all-cash deal with private-equity firm Permira, who agreed to pay $44 per share (a roughly 30% premium). Although Squarespace never lost 90% of its share price like BigCommerce, it has experienced a tumultuous time on the market since its IPO in May 2021 — opening around $49.50 and at times trading in the low $20s. Shares rose nearly 13% to $43 in pre-market trading upon release of the news.
___
ByteDance filed a lawsuit in US federal court seeking to block the new law that would force the sale or ban of the app within the country. The lawsuit challenges the law on constitutional grounds, also citing commercial, technical, and legal hurdles, as well as opposition from Beijing. Legal experts say the legal battle will play out in the courts in coming months and likely will reach the Supreme Court.
___
OpenAI unveiled its newest model, GPT-4o, designed to turn ChatGPT into a digital personal assistant that can engage in real-time, spoken conversations and interact with users using text, screenshots, photos, documents, and charts. The new version of ChatGPT also has memory capabilities, which means it can learn from previous conversations. It will be available to both unpaid and premium customers alike. OpenAI also announced that it would be launching a desktop app with the GPT-4o capabilities, giving users another platform to interact with the technology outside of a web browser.
___
Amazon launched in South Africa last week, marking its first marketplace in sub-Saharan Africa, and bringing its total number of marketplaces worldwide to 22. To launch the new marketplace, Amazon is offering free delivery on first orders and on subsequent orders above R500 (about $27), access to 3,000 pick-up points, status updates via WhatsApp to track orders, 30 day refunds, and 24/7 customer support. The marketplace was supposed to launch in the country in 2023, but got delayed due to changes in priorities within Amazon.
___
In an unlikely partnership, Instacart is partnering with Uber Eats to expand into the restaurant delivery business. Instacart will add a new tab for restaurant delivery to its app in the coming weeks, the listings will be provided by Uber, and the food will be picked up and delivered by Uber Eats drivers. Customers will receive the same prices on both apps and Instacart will receive an affiliate commission on orders. It's a strange partnership though given that Instacart and Uber Eats actively compete on grocery delivery. Are they planning to merge? Uber says no.
___
Apple's advertisement for its latest iPad Pro sparked criticism for showing an animation of musical instruments, paint cans, cameras, record players, and other symbols of creativity being crushed by a giant machine, with the output being the new iPad Pro, which the company says is the thinnest Apple product ever. In this context, “crushing” was supposed to symbolize “consolidating” and “compacting” — with the visuals meant to showcase how the new iPad Pro puts the power of all these tools into the hands of creators in one thin device. However online commenters criticized the ad as insensitive and as symbolizing a “destruction of the human experience.” The ad hit the web on Tuesday, and by Thursday, Apple issued a mea culpa and apologized for the campaign.
___
Google is encouraging merchants to enable conversion annotations on their Google Shopping ads, which offer social proof that highlight a product's popularity. Conversion annotations like “best selling” or “3K shopped here recently” would provide visual cues about a product’s popularity or sales performance directly in the ad unit. Annotations like these are par for the course with e-commerce retailers including Amazon, Walmart, and Temu, which all employ similar tactics. They can provide valuable info for shoppers and also help with conversions. However they also open data privacy concerns, given that Google is not the actual retailer or marketplace selling the items, so a merchant would have to share this purchase history data from their e-commerce platform with Google — which technically most already do by giving access to GA4.
___
Shein is attempting to join the National Retail Federation as it pursues regulatory approval to go public in the US. The company believes that NRF membership would boost its chances of receiving SEC approval. However so far, Shein has been rejected numerous times. An anonymous source familiar with the matter said someone with heavy influence at the NRF is strongly against the Shein's admittance. However board members who spoke to CNBC said that Shein's membership application hadn't come up in meetings, and that they aren't involved in deciding which companies are granted access.
___
Amazon is leading the way with selling home goods, capturing 18.8% of consumer home furnishings spending, compared to Walmart's 7.3% market share. Notably, Amazon’s gains in the furniture category come in spite of the company’s decision to phase out two of its three furniture brands last year.
___
Stanley, which is projected to do $750M in sales this year, up from $73M in 2019, after seeing its water bottles become a status symbol thanks to TikTok, is now expanding into trendier accessories. The company is launching a line of bags called the All-Day Collection which include a mini cooler, backpack cooler, and Quencher Carry-All, designed for someone to sling their Stanley over their hip.
___
Jack Dorsey left the Bluesky board and deleted his account on the service he helped kickstart, claiming that Bluesky was “literally repeating all the mistakes” he made while running Twitter. Dorsey says he never intended Bluesky to be an independent company, but rather, an open source protocol that Twitter was supposed to be the first client of. He also confirmed that he is financially backing Nostr, another decentralized Twitter-like service popular among crypto enthusiasts and run by an anonymous founder.
___
Amazon is deploying 50 electric trucks in California, which it claims is the largest EV fleet in the country, as part of its mission to eliminate pollution from its global operations. The trucks will be integrated into first-mile operations, moving goods from container ships at the ports to fulfillment centers, as well as middle-mile operations, transporting packages from fulfillment centers to delivery centers.
___
Wix launched a new tool called AI Portfolio Creator, which allows a user to upload and organize large-scale image collections, select the type of portfolio they want, and then have the AI tool sort and generate a portfolio with clustered images, recommended titles and descriptions, and personalized layout options.
___
Amazon is now requiring all dietary supplements to be verified by a third-party testing, inspection, and certification organization — which is something that not even the FDA requires. Amazon is the largest supplement retailer in the US ahead of Walmart and Target, and its new requirements are expected to put more pressure on the industry, which is being scrutinized more than ever.
___
Alibaba is revamping its flagship retail website Taobao for the first time in seven years with a focus on providing a smoother search and buying process. The website overhaul comes ahead of the 618 sales event, China's second-largest annual shopping event. A few weeks ago I reported that Eddie Wu, the CEO of Alibaba Group, would now be directly overseeing its domestic e-commerce arm which includes Taobao and Tmall Group, and it sounds like he's hitting the ground running with his new responsibilities.
___
Amazon is hosting its first-ever Amazon Book Sale, a new shopping event starting on May 15th that offers up to 50% off print best sellers and up to 80% off Kindle Books. The six day shopping event will exclusively run in the US, and Prime-membership is not required to take advantage of the deals.
___
FTX reported that nearly all of its customers will receive the money back that they are owed, two years after the cryptocurrency exchange imploded. The company owes about $11.2B to its customers and estimates that it has between $14.5B and $16.3B to distribute to them. The caveat is that customers will receive the USD value of their holdings at the time of the exchange collapse, and not the actual crypto holdings themselves, which means that they'll miss out on all gains during the past two years during which BTC went from around $16k to now over $60k. Better than nothing though, that's for sure.
___
800,000 consumers in Europe and the US were duped into sharing card details and other sensitive personal data with a network of fake online designer shops operated from China, which comprised one of the largest scams of its kind with 76,000 fake websites created. The scammers used expired domains to host its fake shops in order to help avoid detection by websites or brand owners, and more than 1M orders were processed in the past three years alone.
___
Beyond Inc, which owns Bed Bath & Beyond, Overstock, and Zulily, reported that its Q1 net loss swelled to $72M from $10M a year ago, while its operating loss widened to $58M from $8M. The company's active customers grew to 6M, up 26% from nearly 5M a year ago, however, its average order value dropped to $173 from $220 a year earlier.
___
TikTok will begin automatically labeling AI generated content when it is uploaded from certain platforms like DALL.E 3, Adobe Firefly, Photoshop, and Microsoft Copilot. TikTok will also start attaching Content Credentials to content, which will remain on the media when downloaded, allowing other platforms to read the metadata.
___
eBay is testing an Add To Cart button in search results that opens a Quick View window, allowing buyers to skip the listing page. Technically the button should probably not be labeled “Add To Cart” since it doesn't perform that action, but rather, displays a quick view window with three buttons: Buy It Now, Add To Cart, View All Details. Sellers are worried that buyers will miss crucial details in the product description that may lead to increased returns and negative feedback.
___
Amazon is planning to launch its fleet of drones in Tolleson, Arizona, but the city's extreme temperature is hampering its efforts. Drones can't operate in temperatures exceeding 104 degrees Fahrenheit, a temperature that Tolleson crosses for a full three months of the year.
___
A US district judge dismissed X's lawsuit against Bright Data, a data-scraping company accused of improperly accessing X system and violating X terms and state laws when scraping and selling data. The judge basically said that if X owned the data, it could perhaps argue that it has exclusive rights to control it, but then X wouldn't be able to enjoy the safe harbor of Section 230, which allows the platform to avoid liability for third-party content. Can't have it both ways!
___
Nintendo is discontinuing its X integration for the switch on June 10th, which means users will no longer be able to post screenshots or videos to the platform from their device. The drop in support also affects games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which had game-specific options to send out tweets. Microsoft Xbox dropped support for X in April 2023 and Sony Playstation dropped the service in October 2023 due to the increase in X's API access fees.
___
Amazon claimed that its recordable incident rate — a metric that comprises all injuries requiring “more than basic first-aid treatment” — at its US warehouses has improved by 24% since 2019. However the National Employment Law Project challenged Amazon's injury data in a report last week, claiming that Amazon's overall injury rate in 2023 was 71% higher than that of other employers in the sector at 6.5 cases per 100 workers.
___
Amazon Ads announced three new advertising formats for streaming TV including shoppable carousel ads, interactive pause ads, and interactive trivia ads. Amazon did not say when the new ad types would officially launch, but noted that it will formally present them at a presentation on May 14th.
___
Meta is rolling out an expanded set of generative AI ad tools that can create full image variations with text overlays, expand images to fit across different aspect ratios, and generate alternate versions of headlines and other ad text. The features will become available globally to advertisers by the end of the year.
___
Square introduced a tool called Square Kiosk to allow self-service ordering at fast food restaurants. The device is a combined software, hardware, and payment solution that allows customers to select exactly what they want with customization options, upgrades, and add-ons.
___
The European Parliament announced new measures to make packaging more sustainable and reduce packaging waste in the EU, including reduction targets of 15% by 2040 — which sounds far away but is only 16 years away?! As part of the new rules, the EU will set maximum empty space ratios for e-commerce transportation, ban certain single-use plastic packaging types, and beverage distributors and take-away food will have to offer consumers the option of bringing their own container.
___
Indians who pre-ordered Teslas in 2016 are giving up and seeking refunds of their deposits after Elon Musk canceled another visit to the country last month. Disillusioned Tesla enthusiasts in India say they will now buy a car from the company only if they see it in a showroom, or they'll buy a different electrical vehicle from a company that actually exists in the country.
___
Target is limiting its Pride Month collection to select stores this year instead of rolling out the merchandise nationwide like it typically has for the past decade, due to backlash the retailer experienced last year. Last May customers in certain stores knocked down LGBTQ+ merchandise displays, angrily approached store employees, and posted threatening videos on social media from inside the stores.
___
E-commerce spending from Jan 1 to April 30, 2024 rose 7% YoY to $331.6B, according to Adobe Analytics. One trend Adobe identified during the period is a shift of online spending to purchasing the cheapest goods across personal care, electronics, apparel, home & garden, furniture, and grocery.
___
Plus 7 seed rounds, IPOs, and acquisitions of interest, including Shopify's acquisition of Peel, a tool that integrates with a merchant's tech stack including Klaviyo and Recharge and helps them analyze their sales data to improve customer retention.
___

2024.05.13 20:48 Miss_clueless51324 I’m clueless about everything

Hi! I just want to vent out and ask for your opinions and advices on my situation. This is my first time sharing my story publicly because this time it is too much for me to handle. I’m a graduating student and I don’t know anything about the world, how to do house chores, how to get a job, how to be independent. Im not proud of it. Im struggling na sobra kasi natatakot na ako para sa future ko. The story behind me not knowing everything is because my guardians(lolo/lola) care too much about me. I should be thankful but it is too much. Wala na akong ina and yung papa ko is jobless so yung tito ko (family sa motherside) ang kumupkup at nagpalaki saming magkapatid. Im very thankful talaga kasi sila nagpalaki samin nagbigay ng basic necessities like food, clothes, shelter, education lahat na. Di sila nagkulang saming magkapatid. But the thing is we don’t have our freedom. Whenever I try to do house chores they get mad like “tumabi ka dyan di mo alam ginagawa mo, di masarap maluluto mo, di ka marunong magsaing ng kanin sayang lang yung bigas, pas pasali ka itta(di ko alam tagalog neto ahha) and if we ask permission to go out with my friends we are always denied. Or kung ppayagan man susunduin ako or tatawagan. Eh hindi naamn ako/kami umaalis ng barangay kung gagala man nasa kapit bahay lang kami as in kapit bahay lang. Yung isang bahay lang pagitan ganun lang. Tas di naman kami lumalabas magkakaibigan nagfofoodtrip lang kami and talk. In a whole year nas akwarto lang ako nagaaral and malimit lang akong lumabas ng bahay kasi mga kaibigan ko nga is nasa manila nagaaral so minsan lang ako lumabas pg nauwi sila. Kumbaga isang beses or dalawang beses lang siguro believe it or not kasi hindi naman ako magala masyado. So to cut it, my whole life nas akwarto lang ako nagaaral and i dont get a chance to learn how to cook, or anything outside our house. I don’t have streetsmart nor i dont know pano dumiskarte sa buhay. Im struggling to try kasi once i fail sobra sobrang galit nanamn nila sakin. Also, i have scoliosis. And my grandma mock me about it. Whenever i try wearing a cloth im comfortable and feel confident. Sasabihan niy ako ng “bat yan suot mo bangking/baliko din lang yang likod mo. Hindi pantay katawan mo ang pngit. Lahat ng damit mo kailangan irepair kasi bangking katawan mo.” And kung pupunta kami sa mall pra bumili ng damit ko sasabihin niya sa sales lady na ang hirap kong hanapn ng damit kasi bangking yung likod ko at walang kakasyang damit sakin kasi bangking likod ko. Nung nalaman naming may scoliosis ako. Nung andyan na yung labandera namin sinabi ba naman “ tignan mo yung likod niya bangking, halika ah pkiramdaman mo tignan mo ang laki ng bangking niya” tas tinawag niya ako at pinatalikod para mahawakan ng labandera namin. Pinabuhad niy p ko haha. And ngayon nagkasagutn kami sinabi ko na nasasakal kaming magkapatid sa kanila na pra kaming nakakulong dito sa bahay. And they took it very bad na wal daw akong respeto, at utang na loob sa pagpapalaki saamin. Na kesyo yung tito ko daw never nanumbat tuwing pinapagalitan. Bastos daw ako. Sabi ko naman i only ask for our freedom bakit sobra sobrang mali na hilingin yung freedom namin. And they said okay you got your freedom frome now on wala na kaming pake kung amgpalam ka man go nalang pg ikaw nagkamali wag kang lalapit samin. Kung ano man mangyare sayo wala na kaming pake wag na wag kang lalapit samin. Kung mabubtis ka man ng jowa mo wala na kaming pake. They also said sarcastically na “sorry ha ganto namin kayo alagaang magkapatid, responsibilidad naming kami ang magadjust kasi kayo na nagsabi niyan. Ikaw pa may karapatang magsabi niyan wow ha wow”. Eh i ask for my freedom to know about the world outside our house. Para maging independent. Para matuto. Sabi nila inaadvance lang daw nila na baka kung ano mangyre samin pag lumabas kami edi naiwasan daw. Oo may point sila. Pero sobra yung higpit. Im so clueless because of that. I can’t do anything throughout my life kundi magstay sa kwarto at magaral. Kahit to unwind a little lang sana. Kasi sobrang nasisira na mental health ko sa paninira palang ng confidence dahil sa scoliosis ko, sa pangmomock na wala akong alam sa buhay( eh wala nga akong alam kasi they wont let me learn). Kasi bawal magfail dapt first try perfect. Eh kako pano naman ako matututo kung di ako magfefail. Eh bakit daq sila nung bata sila. Hayss ang hirap. Ngayon nakuha ko nga freedom na gusto ko pero nakakakonsensya naman lumabas ng bahay kasi iisipin mo mga sinabi nila na wala akong utang na loob or respeto manlang. Help please i dont know what to do

Picky Eater
I have picky 9 mo old mini GD! He’s a VERY picker eater and few weeks ago he got blood work done and his protein levels are LOW and he’s under weight . He tends to only want wet food which I know is not enough for him and he hides his kibble and spit it out and ONLY eat the wet food! We’ve been through PP chicken , Fromm, and Science Hill. I’m opened to suggestions or anything you think would help!
I’ve been looking a raw blend kibble or just trying raw diet? Thoughts on open farm, Stella & Chewy, or just adding brother or raw/ freeze dried toppers ?

2024.05.13 19:37 Peppo_Zoppo Master Duel low FPS using Whisky

Hi Guys,
I've been playing Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel using Whisky for the past few months and everything has been running fun. There was an update to the game however and since then, it's been running slow, not laggy or anything, just in a slow-mo like state.
I tried downloading and installing it on another mac and running it through the same setup, but everything runs as it should, no slow-mo or low fps, runs just how it should. All the settings are the same between the two machines and Whisky setups, all versions the same, but the setup on my Mac Mini is still running slow.
All other games within Steam/Whisky are running normally, it's just Master Duel.
Any suggestions?
Slow-Mo Machine: M1 Mac Mini 8gb RAM
Other machine: M1 MacBook Air 8gb RAM
Happy to give anymore info needed.

2024.05.13 18:29 perfthrowawa26 Keep running into Bait-And-Switch marketing/management Jobs.

I’m a rising Junior in college. As a student with no internship experience, i’m desperate to get one. I’ve been mass applying to all of them. Small companies, large companies, startups… etc. But something that I’ve seem to come across are these listings for ‘marketing’ internships that are a coverup for direct sales. I’ve had two interviews so far with two different small ‘marketing’ companies, and they both were very similar in what they do. They empathize heavily on commission based door-to-door sales for ATT and are trying to get you to become a manager as quickly as possible so you can be earning six figures by next year. So i’m going to do a break down on both of the companies so yall can keep on the look out for similar companies as a college student looking for quick opportunities.
The first company (calling it Happy Inc) They call themselves a ‘Marketing Agency’ on Google and their listings are named ‘Business Management Consulting’ and ‘Marketing’. Some key job responsibilities: ‘Like the hospitality industry, the primary purpose of the Business Management Consultant is to meet and exceed company sales goals in conjunction with cultivating a long-term relationship with our client’s customers’ ‘Understanding clients’ products to properly explain services and benefits to consumers and answer any questions so they get what they genuinely need’ They tried to hide their actual business model, but after the interview, I went back and it was kinda obvious they were a hinting at being direct sales. I just, again, desperate for internship experience. And after rejection after rejection, I jumped on the opportunity when someone actually wanted to conduct an interview with me. And this was the first one I had run into, so I had no knowledge on these companies. ——————————————————— The second company (Fresh Inc) hid it much better. But again, I should have known. They called themselves a ‘Consulting’ company on Google. Their listing title was ‘Customer Service Representative’. And encouraged greatly for you to apply if you have experience in retail, customer service, hospitality, or servehostess relations. During the first interview, they claimed they had three different departments: Sales, Marketing, and Management. They made it seem like it was all separate and that you were only doing the marketing portion. ——————————————————- Honestly, you would have thought it was the same company. They both had VERY similar business models, so here are a few exmaples:
Both did a very simple, easy going group zoom interview for the first round. Then did face to face for second round.
Both congratulated me on getting to second round claiming that ‘alot of people to get to this stage’.
Both spent an EXTRAORDINARY amount of time informing me about the business model, what exactly they do, the pay, and the schedule. It seems like they were trying to convince me to even join their team rather than me trying to convince them that I’m a good fit for their company.
Both had ATT as their biggest client and only focused on ATT. Which confused me. Because they both claimed that they had other companies they marketed for. If y’all are such a good company and market for others, why are we ONLY focusing on ATT?.. You just forgot about your other business clients because ATT is a big, known company? I believe that ATT is their only client and they both lied about marketing for others to seem more credible.
Both empathized that you will face ‘challenges’ whithin the company, especially in the field (aka the neighborhood) doing the sales. Which basically translated that people most likely close the door on your face, yell at you, wont answer the door, or will tell you to go away. Which is why I feel like they target people who have worked in retail/fast food, because they know you’ve probably gotten yelled at by a customer before.
As stated before, both are trying to get you to become a high paying manager within less than a year. It was actually ridiculous when they were trying to explain it. You do the entry level D2D sales for about 2-6 weeks, depending on your work ethic and determination of getting sales. Then you immediately get promoted to manager. Fresh Inc called them ‘campaign managers’ where you’re the ones training the entry level people to do sales, conducting interviews, etc. You do this for about 6-8 months. Then you start magically working with the higher ups and can get your own office to start your own business…
Both empathize on growth, experience, and success. And they also almost got me with this because that’s literally all im looking for. I don’t really mind the pay rate on any job (but i would not do commission). I just want to get an internship to get me in the business world and for my resume.
Speaking of pay, they both had salary pay rates on their applications. But in the 2nd round interviews, they quickly sneak in that you get commission pay only, up until the higher up position. Then they make it seem like its guaranteed that you’re going to make the sales and get money weekly at the highest rate you can (for entry level, they both estimated it to be: $500-$800).
Lastly, they both try to sell you the benefits of travel. Happy inc had just came back from Mexico for a team bonding experience, and Fresh Inc was going to Punta Canta the week after my interview. All expenses paid by ATT…
Also, I go to college in Texas. My mom recently just moved down here from our hometown in Saint Louis, MO. Yes, we have dealt with door salesmen in STL. But my mom said ever since she moved to Texas, there has been a plethora of people knocking on her door trying to sell her something. Also, the Happy Inc manager that was interviewing me told me that they still knock on doors that have the ‘no soliciting’ signs… The fact that people even have those signs show that this is a big thing down in Texas. Idk if it’s a location based thing, but it seems like its a common occurence down here in Texas.
Im not sure if this is considered a pyramid scheme. I have been doing research on these companies after after the Fresh Inc interview, and it seems like its been a thing for a while. But I just find it frustrating because I think I finally found a good opportunity after months of searching and piles of rejections and its just one of these… Please stay on the look out for these types of jobs.

2024.05.13 17:59 Ped_md Best mini van for family of 5?

Looking for a mini van for family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids under 4). I’ve been looking at slightly used cars (<75k miles) preferably <$25k. Toyota and Sienna seem highly regarded, but expensive. There are tons of Chrysler Pacificas for sale in my area for a good price right now, but I’m also wondering why so many are for sale and if it’s a red flag.

2024.05.13 17:42 that_90s_guy Why does it feel like handhelds in the $50-125 price range are still "stuck" with specs from 2020 while devices in the $200 USD+ price range are seeing such dramatic performance increases?

This might seem like a weird discussion to have in a world where the Anbernic RG556 / Retroid Pocket 4 Pro / Odin 2 exist. But something I've just now begun to notice is how the budget $50-125 USD market seems to be "innovating" at a glacier pace. Here's just a two key examples from Anbernic / Powkiddy:
Runs up to PS1 with some N64/DC/PSP
...
Whyyyyyyyyy
Honestly, I'm starting to get why people spam the Miyoo Mini+ so much. What's the point of buying anything newer if unless you can afford devices in the $125+ price bracket, you're getting the same performance? Same goes for Trimui Smart Pro now that it's dropped to $55 USD (was $44 last week) while packing some of the nicest quality hardware/screen for the price. People love to laugh at it for having a "weak processor" due to its modern appearance, except it's inline with anything you can buy up to 3x the price. Also, I'd include the Retroid Pocket 2S capable of some GC/PS2 if it ever went on sale anywhere, or if shipping/tax didn't increase its "low price" all the way to $130 usually.
Regardless, am I the only one frustrated by this? Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting something crazy unrealistic. Yes, these are cheap "budget" devices. But at least show some kind of tangible improvement for performance per dollar over the years.

I'm sorry, but "low price" is NOT an excuse for 4 years of stagnation.

/endrant
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk
Edit: Thanks for all discussion everyone, I think you're all making some really great logical points that while performance per dollar has not improved massively, hardware quality + QoL features like BT/Wi-Fi have. And that while N64/DC/PSP emulation is still not 100% stable at this price range in 2024, it was much more unstable back in 2020. I guess that's something? This makes me a little more hopeful, but I can't shake the feeling we should be seeing bigger gains over 4 years by looking at how dramatically the $200-300 price range was improved.

2024.05.13 17:29 Nate1763 ipod mini battery replacement with liPo 503040

I have been looking online and it seems a good option for a replacement iPod mini battery is to mod a LiPo 503040 battery. Looking at ebay, I found that the majority of batteries for sale have just two wires (such as this one), while a few have the additional white one that is present on the OEM battery.
I believe that I would have to solder the BMS on the original battery to the new one if I bought one with only two wires-- how difficult of a mod is this, and could anyone point me to more resources on how to do this?
Would it be better to just solder the original connector on a battery that has all three wires, like this one?
Thanks in advance!

2024.05.13 17:23 noktulo Minidisc collection labeled with Brother ColAura printer

Minidisc collection labeled with Brother ColAura printer
I recently started a minidisc hobby and wanted to label my discs with color album art. I didn't want to buy a full color printer, so I bought a used Brother ColAura VC-500W label printer on eBay for $70 ($199 new).
In general I'd say it's an okay solution. So at first I tried printing straight from Illustrator, but the resolution came out pretty bad. I've had better results printing directly from the Brother P-Touch Editor software. The colors aren't super vibrant, and the resolution isn't great. The colors in these photos are a little more saturated than they are in real life due to my iPhone. The photo of the Poolside disc I desaturated a bit to show what it really looks like and how it butchers gradients. Also, when printing on 2" paper, the minimum length of the label is 2", so I have to print at least two labels at once and cut them with scissors to separate. Generally the adhesive sticks well enough, but is easy to remove without residue. However, something about the Maxell Billiard Colors discs' finish seems to prevent the label from sticking super well. It's good enough but the labels will peel up slightly around the edges.
However, I do think the overall effect when I see them all together is okay.
