2024.05.15 00:29 stlatos Ogma and Agni, PIE Fire Gods and Sun Gods
Ranko Matasovic reconstructed *Ogmiyos to explain the name of the Celtic god (Gaulish Ogmios, OIr Ogm(a)e, MW Euuyd \ Ewyð). He said that though *ogm > *ōm might be expected on the model of certain *ogn > *ōn, etc., *m and *n need not behave the same. This is true, but not very likely (nasals often behave the same way, especially concerning voicing). The other possible example of *seg(m)et- > OW seget-, MIr séimed ‘seed / descendants’ shows that *egm > *ēm DID occur, and though he wonders about the source of *-gm- here (*-met- is not a normal ending), *seg- is a known root, *og- is not. In cases like this, there is no reason to say an uncertain sound change is proven one way by an unknown root, and *gm of *Ogmiyos should be abandoned in favor of a different cluster. The only likely source is *Ongmiyos or *Omgmiyos, with later nasal dissimilation. That this occurred after leaving its mark in a sound change is also seen in *smamk^i- > *sme(m)gi- > Irish smeig ‘chin’, where *-mk- is needed to voice *k > g, but the 2nd *m must disappear before regular *emg > *ēg (Whalen 2024a). Two nasals are seen in Hittite zmankur, making it :
*smamk^ru- > *sma(m)k^ur- > Hittite zma(n)kur ‘beard’, šmankur-want- ‘bearded’
*smak^ru- > Sanskrit śmáśru-
*smak^ro- > Lithuanian smãkras ‘chin’
*smamk^i- > *sme(m)gi- > Irish smeig ‘chin’
The only similar word in PIE is *(e/o)ngni-s ‘fire’ (L. ignis, Li. ugnìs, Skt. agní-). Since this occurs in the name of the god Agni, similarities between them should be looked at. Since Ogma is called ‘sun-faced’ and Agni compared to the sun (or sometimes equivalent), Ogmios was equated with Hercules and Agni was said to do the same deeds as Indra (and their births were likely once the same), and both had odd tongues (Agni’s many tongues represented the flames, Ogmios’ tongue connected by chains to his followers represented his eloquent words binding them), there is a reasonable amount to compare.
Ogma is not described in extensive detail, but he is similar to Lug. Since several gods might be split into more (if they had multiple names), I will also consider this connection. Hercules is most similar to Cú Chulainn; if Ogma was an earlier name, then trying to find common elements in all 3 might help. Cú Chulainn’s real name was supposedly Sétanta ‘knowing the way’. If this was an epithet of a god, it would be for one associated with intelligence, not strength. Ogma is known for both, and Lug is skilled in many arts. One god of fighting strength and knowledge is possible, but 3 would e pushing it.
OIr Lug (Ir. Lugh, Lugu- in Gaulish) is likely related to a similarly “clever” god, Norse Loki. Since *g > k would be expected in Germanic, this could have some value in reconstructing *Lug-u- vs. *Lug-on-, but this would not be related to any meaningful PIE root. The primacy of regularity would require Lugu- ‘lynx’, but this seems like grasping at straws. It’s possible both are somehow related to *l(e)uk- ‘light’ (ON leygr ‘flame / fire’, Skt. roci- ‘light/ray/beam’). Loki’s connection to fire (such as his descent from lightning and a tree, like a forest fire) shows he was a once a god of fire, among others. His punishment is very similar to Prometheus’, who gave fire to man. In a myth (probably late) Loki has an eating contest with Logi (the personification of fire). Both Old Norse loga ‘flame’ and logi come from Indo-European *leuk- ‘bright, light’. If Loki came from the same root, the -k- would be unexplained. The cause could be found in Icelandic bingur ‘heap’, Norwegian bunga / bunka ‘small heap’. Seeing g > k in one word, also an old n-stem, suggests that PIE *kn > *gn > Gmc. *kn could be at work (as in *doik^no- > E. token), or that Gmc. *nK or *nKn was irregular (see below). Since n-stems had *-o:n in the nominative, but *-nos in the genitive, or similar inflection, a split of the older into two words later is possible:
*luko:n > *lugo:n > logi
*luknos > *lugnos > *luknos >> *luko:n > Loki
Sometimes *k > g in Celtic for no known cause (OIc. hafr ‘male goat’, L. caper, OIr. gabor), so there is no proof lug- did not come from *luk-. It is also possible that Lugu- is related to *lugh- in *lughra: > OW loyr, W. lloer ‘moon’, L. lūridus ‘pale yellow / wan / ghastly’, which would serve the same semantic purpose, even if from a separate root. It seems likely to me that *luk- and *lugh- would be related, since many IE roots are nearly identical except for voicing, such as *KaP- ‘hold’ > *ghabh-eH1 > L. habeō, *kap-ye- > L. capiō ‘seize/take’,*gab- > Arm. kapem ‘bind’.
Since *ogmos > OIr ogum ‘Ogham writing’ is an o-stem, 3 different endings would exist (legend says Ogmae created ogum). With this, that the PIE word is *(e/o)mgni(yo)- / *(e/o)ngmo- / etc. and not *(e/o)ngni-s ‘fire’ allows figures similar to Lug to be added, especially if they had no etymology before. With more nasal dissimilation *n-m > *n-w, Gmc. *Ingwaz, ON Yngvi, OE Ing (which were likely other names for Frey). For *ngm > *nkw, since Kümmel proposed outcomes of Gmc. *nK that were not governed by Verner’s Law, *nKn might be a special case, both possibly irregular. Since Ing was “seen first among the East Danes” and had a wagon that could move over water he resembles the sun and other Sun Gods with flying boats or chariots. This could have also originally been like Frey’s magic foldable ship Skíðblaðnir or Wade’s boat Guingelot.
It is not easy to determine an origin for *(e/o)ngmi(yo)-. However, since Agni shows many signs of being particularly associated with the domestic hearth, his female equivalent being *westu- ‘dwelling / home’ >> L. Vesta, G. Hestíā suggests a source for odd *-ngm-. If his name also came from ‘home’, a compound of *domyo- (Skt. dámya- ‘being in a house/homely’) could be *en+domyo- > *endmyo- ‘(that) which is within a house / hearth / focus’. With no other old examples, *ndm > *ngm seems possible. As for *(e/o)-, it could be optional rounding by *m in *emgnyo- > *omgniyo- (compare also optional e > o by KW in *penkWe > *kW- > O. *pompe ‘5’, L. quīnque; Ga. pempe-, *kWonkWe > OIr cóic ). If not, I have also considered it possible that PIE *(H)en ‘in(to)’ was actually more complicated. Consider :
*ent(e)ro- ‘interior (of body) / entrails / stomach / belly’ > éntera ‘entrails’, Arm. ǝnder-k’, Skt. antrá-m, OCS jętro ‘liver’
*endro- > Cz. jádro ‘kernel’
*wentri- ‘interior (of body) / entrails / stomach / belly’ > L. venter ‘belly / womb / entrails’
*wed(a)ro- > Li. vḗdaras ‘fish entrails’
Both groups mean the same thing, alternate *t / *d and *Tr / *TVr for no clear reason. Some of this might be contamination between similar stems, but, if not, it could be that *ewen ‘in’ existed, becoming *en when not stressed (or in quick speech, or as a clitic, etc.). If so, *ewen-taro- could become *ent(e)ro- / *went(a)ro- ‘interior (of body)’, maybe with optional assimilation of *e-e-a > *e-e-e and *ntr vs. *ndR (for optional *r pronounced as uvular *R, see Whalen 2024b). With this, *ewen- or *ewem- > *on- / *om- might be more likely, and the w of *Ingwaz could be original. Whatever the case, I feel many of these problems need more study.

2024.05.14 23:37 Effective-Ad-2390 Might be moving to Billing soon. I have some questions/concerns.
I am a white mid 20s female who likes women, and I might be moving to Billings in the next 4 months. I am no stranger to white, blue collar towns, however I have spent the last 5 years living in two of the biggest cities in the country and what I loved about them was the culture and diversity. I feel most comfortable in those settings. However, I tend to get along with most everyone. Regardless, I don't want to subject myself to being around people who hate me for who I am (the gay part). I don't want to feel like I can't be myself as I already struggle with some internalized homophobia. I am not necessarily scared of being hate crimed, it has happened before with those proud boys, and really they are just young dumbasses who thinks it's funny to put on a show in front of their buddies or their girlfriend - Can't change everyone's stripes.
I guess my question is how likely am I to feel uncomfortable? Are there other gay people in BIllings? Like just regular gay people? Not the ones who wear cat ears and rainbow flags everywhere (not that there's anything wrong with that it's just not my style and never has been).
For reference, I look pretty tom boy - like any other women's athlete. Gay people know I am gay, but straight people think I am straight. My point is, I can fly under the radar, but I don't want to feel like I have to, ya know? It took me a long while to get comfortable in what I wear and how I present. Also, Montana as a state has always called to me. I love outdoors, I hunt, I fish, I snowboard, I love sports, I respect public land, I love cowboy culture - all of that is in my blood. But I also love all sorts of people, new cultures, young hipster bars with live bands, meeting new people in my age group with likeminded ideologies. Is there a space for me in Billings, Montana.
Hopefully this all makes sense and some of y'all can answer this question. Even straight people might be able to help give some advice. Maybe even some of you white straight blue collar men who usually are the ones to make comments. (No hate btw, I just want advice from all types of people with all types of feelings)

~ General Recommendations (All Consoles) For Anyone Who Can't Decide ~
First off, I won't recommend big or famous games like Final Fantasy or Persona, this is more for lesser know, hidden gems, or just games where it's hard to find someone talking about them.
[Valkyria Chronicles]
[Valkyria Chronicles 4]
This one is really hard to explain through words alone, but just in case, the VC series is a World War 2 military setting story, where you act as the lead of a squad and take mission to drive back the enemy. The story is drama heavy and the gameplay is tactical turn-based, but it's mixed with real-time third person shooter.
You can also make your own army by recruiting different types of solders, training them and upgrading their gear. From rifles to tanks, this is a game you have to experience to understand.
[Fuga: Melodies of Steel 1 & 2]
Great game, great art style, and really well made and balanced turn-based combat. That alone is enough to get the game. Then you add the time-management part of the game, where you spend time upgrading the different tank rooms, cooking, exploring ruins, spending time to bond with other characters, and so on. It's also great if you want a game that you can play for an hour or 2 and then put down for later. As the game is played through stages, and once you're done with a stage, you get an intermission to do what you want and come back to it later.
It's not a long game (compared to the usual JRPG), as you mentioned, it's about 20 hours. Story-wise I think it was a bit too short. Gameplay wise it was great fit, because it didn't outstay it's welcome, and it ends when you feel you have mastered the gameplay and want to face the final challenge.
The story is good, but isn't the focus. Gameplay is the main focus. In fact you'll feel that a lot of context isn't told in the story, but instead left for you to either read about in the in-game wiki or just figure out through obvious clues in the story.
There is a big mechanic that this meant to put a lot of pressure on your playthrough (don't worry about it being spoiled because it's literally explained in the first hour of the game). The thing is though, if you have experience in JRPGs or just play in a really well thought out and relaxed manner, then that mechanic might not be as big a deal as they make it seem to be. Yet it's still fun nonetheless.
Fuga 2 is even better. It fixes a lot of the minor issues the first game had, and what's really great, is it improved the "big pressure" mechanic I talked about, and now it actually is a big deal. Then add to that so much little new mechanics added that just makes for a much more fun and challenging game. The 2nd game also continues the same story.
[Ni no Kuni] Series
If you're looking for that great Isekai fantasy adventure feel, then these two games are where it's at. Fantastic visuals and great music, coupled with a great art style, a combo that is perfect for a chill and relaxed gaming experience. Especially when talking about the first game, with the help ofStudio Ghibli, they managed to make a truly whimsical world with that Studio Ghibli classic touch.

[Wrath of the White Witch]
For a the best fantasy adventure feel, while the combat is a hit or miss depending on your taste, don't let that stop you from actually diving into a true fairy tale world, this is the one with the better story in my opinion, so if you want more story than game, this is for you. Still it has a good share of gameplay, from raising and collecting Pokemon-like monsters, to learning and using different spells, not just in combat but for the overworld too.
[Ni no Kuni™ II: Revenant Kingdom]
This one focuses more on gameplay, with a Kingdom builder, Army battles, Heavy loot focus, and even character collector, this is the one to go with if you want more game than story. Still has the great music and he fantastical art style and setting. Add to that a lot of side activities like beating rare monsters, collecting cute creatures to help you in battle, and even going around the world to gather people to help you build your kingdom. You'll never be short on things to do.
Finally, both of them have beautifully draw world that is just a pleasure to walkthrough, made even better with the amazing orchestral soundtrack.
[Star Ocean The Second Story R]
The original PS1 game was already an amazing JRPG and a classic. But this remake takes it to go even further beyond SSJ3. It should be the standard on how to make a faithful remake on of a classic title.
I don't want to overhype it more than I already did. So to keep this short, this remake does so much:
- All major story events are now fully voice acted. This includes a lot of the private actions too.
- Fully redone and better translation of the game.
- New Character to recruit to the party.
- New Private Actions and 13 new Endings.
- New character portraits, not just for the main cast, but also for many other characters.
- A complete rework for the battle system to be up to modern standards.
- So many QoL features:
- Auto-saving
- Fast-forward cut-scenes or skip them.
- Text log
- All difficulties can be accessed from the start
- Fast travel
- 3 different voice dubbing options to choose from (New English, Original Japanese, New Japanese)
- Your choice of different art styles
- Choose between original OST and new rearranged OST.
- No random battles anymore, as enemies can be seen and avoided
And believe me when I say I still haven't touched half of the amazing work that has gone into this remake.
[Sword and Fairy 7: Together Forever]
They did a great job with the presentation of the game. Great voice acting (Chinese), great graphics, amazing music, and an impressive attention to details of the world and it's lore, especially the engineering of the buildings and their decor. Then you have the really beautiful design of each piece of gear, and even just normal attire of each NPC and the disciples of each sect or soldiers of each of the different of each plane (gods, humans, demons).
Then we go to how great looking the monsters and local flora and fauna of each realm. You can feel the intense work that has gone into making and animating each of them. It really is a joy to watch them, as much as it is to watch each environment you see them in. There really isn't enough time to talk about how good the presentation is.
As for the story. First off, I am not an expert in Chinese novels mythology, but I am a big fan of Xianxia and Wuxia novels. So when I say that the story is...good but nothing great, I am saying this as more than just a JRPG fan, but also someone who is very into this type of world and Chinese martial arts fantasy setting. it's nothing that will stick in your mind, apart from the events that take place in some of the beautiful set pieces in the game, or the cut-scenes with beautiful action cheoragphy.
The gameplay is also about average. The side-quests are fun and are worth doing if nothing more than for learning more about the lore and the world. But the actual battles and action gameplay isn't as good as the best ones out there, but it's not bad. I have ran into some bugs, some small, some big, but that was when the game just came out, and it did receive a lot of patches since then. You can tell that they aimed to make a huge triple A production, but didn't have the time or manpower to test a game of this size. It's still fun to play and experience, but the level of gameplay is nowhere near the level of the presentation that the game gives the impression of having just from watching the gameplay or trailers.
If you enjoy walking through magical and fantastic looking JRPG worlds, or if you enjoy Xianxia/Wuxia fiction, then this is an easy choice. Hell even if you don't, it's still worth a go at this price.
[Blue Dragon] & [Lost Odyssey]
These two are classic titles that will probably won't be ported to or remade to modern consoles. That's why this might be the last way you'll ever get to experience 2 classic titles of the genre. Lost Odyssey has great story writing and unique character settings, and Blue Dragon has great exploration and a really fun character class customization system, and one hell of a boss theme.
[Monster Sanctuary]
This is a solid game, everything in is polished and balanced to make sure you are having fun collecting new monsters and customizing your team through evolution/skill trees/gear and making the best in-sync party you can. I only wish it was longer, it's not short by any means, but it's not long either. I would say depending on if you're trying to "catch them all" and explore everything and fight all bosses, this could easily be a 30+ hours game, but if you focus on the story, then it's about 20 to 30 hours. Now even longer with the 2 new free DLC expansion added.
Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining that it's short, but that I was having so much fun, that I wish it didn't end.

Female Age 26 On Lexapro for 4 years Also on 60 mg Strattera
Like many throughout this sub, I’ve had the unpleasant experience of gaining a TON of weight since starting Lexapro.
While it may be quite wordy, I wanted to share my story in case someone can relate.
Back when COVID started (March 2020), I was pretty much the skinniest I had been during my early adult years and quite muscular for a woman (coming off being a college athlete).
A couple weeks into March 2020, I unfortunately got very sick with (I believe) an early strain of COVID which feels like it completely changed my brain chemistry/gave me crippling full-body anxiety that is still present to this day.
I couldn’t function socially, I constantly felt like I was about to have a heart attack at any second, yet every test said I was perfectly healthy. An onset of chronic pain in my ribs didn’t help much either.
When my doctor asked if I had tried Lexapro, I was eager to see if this new medication would be the magic fix to my new-found anxiety. Luckily… I was right.
Since about mid-2020, I’d primarily been taking 10mg Lexapro - seeing great results with anxiety relief and finally being able to talk myself down from panic attacks. The new downside, I went from being a 5’2” 130 lb college athlete to a 175 lb work-from-homer that barely gets off the couch.
The last two years have been increasingly difficult for me. I’m constantly in pain from the added body weight, physical activities I used to do with ease have only gotten more difficult even though I still have a desire to do them, and I just feel overall shame and embarrassment.
While I know the Lexapro is NOT fully to blame here (my switch to a more sedentary lifestyle makes a major impact as well), it’s wild thinking back at how fast I put the weight on and how it correlated perfectly with when I started my Lexapro journey.
I should’ve realized that the Lexapro was probably not helping my weight gain, however at the time, I really didn’t think of that side effect and mainly attributed my weight to my new life of trying not to upset my chronic pain by sitting all day.
About two months ago, I felt more anxious and upped my dose from 10mg to 15mg all while starting to watch my calories and MAJORLY increase my physical activity. It stumped me why I started also feeling bigger than ever…
TWENTY POUNDS GAINED! I couldn’t believe I actually weighed 195. Surely I was doing the right thing by increasing my exercise and making progress towards my goals?
While I’ve always been a “the number on the scale doesn’t define me as long as I make good decisions for my body” type of person, I immediately made an an appointment with my Psych.
She thankfully heard my concerns and lowered my dose back to 10mg of Lexapro, and added Wellbutrin to see if it would help combat some of the “unpleasant side effects” I was going through (sex drive had completely tanked as well).
I just picked up my script and I’m starting my journey with NOOM, trying to do whatever I can to get on the right path here.
If anyone has had a similar experience or any advice for starting Wellbutrin on top of Lexapro, I would LOVE to hear feedback! It’s been a very tough road for me with all of this, but I finally feel like I’m on the right track and have a clear mind of what I want to work towards.
TL:DR- In total, gained about 65 lbs since starting Lexapro, finally adding Wellbutrin to try to help. Let me know your experience!

Here's what I'm thinking: assuming 98% of people are swapped, and ~50% of the population is likely in a body of the opposite gender.
Likely a huge burst in the [visibly] gay and lesbian population.
??% of people continue to dress in the fashion style of their mind vs their body? Is this number different for male bodied women vs female bodied men? (Not everyone would want to be in these bodies, so I feel these scenarios are likely for people holding onto pre-shift existence).
In think there would be an increase in nudity, especially toplessness. Exhibitionist exposing bodies that aren't there's and female bodied men just being men.
Restrooms. What happens? Do we just ignore gender designations? Or more likely we'd go with what's habitual for us individually.
Any comments? Any thoughts? Any other ideas along this thinking?

Round 2, Pick 33 - Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State: NFL: After trading back twice on Thursday, the Bills stick at 33 and take a big, physical and athletically gifted target. Coleman isn't fast and isn't a deep threat, but he can win in a variety of ways. But who will Josh Allen's deep threat be? Stay tuned.
CBS Sports: C-. “X” receiver for a WR-needy team. Plays faster than his combine speed but doesn’t separate consistently and isn’t as good of a contested-catch wideout as his size and highlight-reel would indicate. Young though.
ESPN: After trading back twice, the Bills addressed the team's most significant position of need with Coleman, a big outside receiver with the ability to make splash plays -- 12 receiving touchdowns on contested catches since the start of 2022, second-most in the FBS, however, only a 31.7% contested catch percentage in 2023 -- to create separation and a release that general manager Brandon Beane described as "about as good as any." Beane acknowledged that while he's "probably not" going to run away from defenders, Buffalo feels his play speed is faster than the speed he showed at the combine -- 4.61 40-yard dash -- also noting that they liked his athletic ability that came from playing basketball. The Bills needed starting-level talent at outside receiver and Coleman, who turns 21 in May, fits into what Buffalo was looking for, while the team was still able to move back and add picks.

Round 2, Pick 60 - Cole Bishop, S, Utah: NFL: Safety was a big need for the Bills, and they go back to the Utes for help after taking Dalton Kincaid in Round 1 a year ago. Bishop is a very good athlete and field general who can play the post safety spot and cover a lot of ground. He played like the QB of the Utes' defense the past two years and could be a rookie starter for Buffalo.
CBS Sports: A-. Large, intimidating safety with magnificent movement skill. The QB of the defense. Aligns everywhere. Can wear many hats. Excelled as slot defender and vs. TEs in coverage and runs the alley on outside runs as well as any safety in the class. Ball skills and tackling must improve. Short arms. Need filled.
ESPN: Another pick for the Bills in the second round, another big need addressed. Drafting Bishop adds someone who can compete for a starting role this season, in addition to being a potential answer in the secondary after moving on from Jordan Poyer this offseason while Micah Hyde continues to contemplate retirement. Bishop has the ability to move all over the field, along with speed -- 4.45 40-yard dash -- and many of the qualities and instincts the Bills look for at the position.

Round 3, Pick 95 - DeWayne Carter, DT, Duke: NFL: When I first watched Carter at the Senior Bowl, I wrote in my notes: "rolling ball of knives." Carter's game doesn't have a lot of pretty to it, but he's a scheme disruptor with his low center of gravity, ferocious style and nasty demeanor.
CBS Sports: B+. Active, high-energy interior rusher who’s on the ground a bit more than what’s desired because of his frenetic style. But it also gets him to the football more often than most DTs. Flashes of swim move and spin just needs to utilize them more. Length is a plus and he works hard vs. run. Some power too. Fills niche need on Buffalo’s defensive front. Needs to use his length better on passing downs.
ESPN: Using the pick acquired via the trade with the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, the Bills addressed another hole with Carter bringing depth at defensive tackle. The three-technique tackle will have the opportunity to continue to develop -- potentially as Ed Oliver's backup -- adding to a defensive tackle room that has limited young talent. The Bills didn't draft a defensive tackle last year due to the way the board fell, but the team was able to add to the rotation early this year.

Round 4, Pick 128 - Ray Davis, RB, Kentucky: NFL: Davis has overcome a lot to reach this level, and though he lacks long speed, he can be a Zack Moss-like player for the Bills. Davis' vision and wicked spin move have left a few defenders in a blender.
CBS Sports: C. Compact, older RB with plus stop-start ability, married to his feet well. Can deploy multiple cuts in a run to make defenders miss. Good, not amazing overall elusiveness though. Quicker than fast too. Will work hard to fight through contact. Has the skills to be fine complementary RB in NFL.
ESPN: With Davis, the Bills add a needed bigger back -- 5-foot-8, 211-pounds -- to pair with James Cook, but also someone who has the ability to catch the football (seven touchdown catches in 2023, tied with Najee Harris for the most by any SEC running back in a season in the last 25 years). Buffalo had a variety of veterans complimenting Cook last season, but Davis, 24, will give Buffalo a power runner and another younger presence in the room, albeit with plenty of collegiate experience from two seasons at Temple, two at Vanderbilt and one at Kentucky.

Round 5, Pick 141 - Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, C, Georgia: NFL: He's a tough, durable competitor with good anchor strength and three years starting experience for an SEC power, although SVP's lack of athleticism and smaller frame might make him a center-only projection.
CBS Sports: A-. Multi-year starter in the SEC with wrestler’s mentality. Battles through the whistle every snap. Mobility stands out. Explosive short-area quicks. Doesn’t have supreme length and clearly has to add weight/strength to his game. Methodically carries out run-game duties with ease. Second-level climbs etc. Older prospect but comes with high floor.
ESPN: This offseason, the Bills moved on from the team's starting center, Mitch Morse, and backup Ryan Bates. Last year's left guard Connor McGovern is set to slide over to the starting role. Adding Van Pran-Granger brings depth at center -- he allowed one sack his entire career in 1,337 pass-blocking plays, according to Sports Info Solutions -- and a strong candidate for the future at the position with significant starting experience (he started the last three seasons at center for Georgia).

Round 5, Pick 160 - Edefuan Ulofoshio, LB, Washington: NFL: In recent years, Buffalo has taken some interesting shots on linebackers in Rounds 3-7, and Ulofoshio continues that trend. He was one of the final players in my top 100 prospect list with his excellent speed, intense style and special teams experience, even if injuries have clouded his projection.
CBS Sports: A-. Six-year LB who starred for a long time as a full-time player in Washington’s program. Big-time tester and it shows on the field. Just takes a second to diagnose. Keen block-avoider as he’s sifting through traffic. Smooth athlete all around but doesn’t quite play to his workout. Reliable tackler who also flashed coverage skill down the seam. High-floor pick here. Crowded LB room.
ESPN: The Bills lost major special teams contributors this offseason, including linebacker Tyrel Dodson and defensive back Siran Neal, while captain linebacker Tyler Matakevich remains a free agent. Ulofoshio adds depth to the linebacker room, but perhaps more importantly, he can find a role on this roster as someone who can make an impact on special teams, an area of priority for the Bills. He has experience from playing six years at Washington, and while he dealt with multiple significant injuries in 2021 and 2022, he played every game in 2023 and earned Washington's Guy Flaherty Most Inspirational Award, the program's oldest and most prestigious honor.

Round 5, Pick 168 - Javon Solomon, DE, Troy: NFL: Solomon was a highly productive rusher the past few years in an unusual frame. That extra length helps Solomon get to the quarterback, along with his quick burst and non-stop motor. An interesting study for sure.
CBS Sports: A. Burst, bend, speed predicated outside EDGE. Small frame but serious length. Unique build. Doesn’t get engulfed by bigger blockers as much as expected because of his speed-to-power conversion. Hand work is good, not amazing and can flatten to the QB. Motor hums on every play. Bills needed this type of quick winner on the outside.
ESPN: Solomon provides depth at edge rusher, another position of need for Buffalo. He led the FBS with 16 sacks last season and totaled 31.5 sacks since the start of 2021 (also most in the FBS), in addition to 49 career tackles for loss (third in Sun Belt history). Being a Day 3 selection, finding a special teams role will be important for Solomon. He'll also have the opportunity to develop behind the likes of Greg Rousseau, Von Miller -- someone that Solomon has modeled his game after -- and AJ Epenesa.

Round 6, Pick 204 - Tylan Grable, OT, UCF: NFL: He's a converted Jacksonville State tight end who became a solid left tackle the past two years at UCF. Grable is a quality athlete with great length and potential to be groomed at center, even if he's still learning how to play O-line.
CBS Sports: B. Height and length type at OT who probably plays guard at the next level. Smooth athleticism and can sustain speed throughout the play. Not just quick. Hands are more active and heavy than they are accurate. Good depth add here with positional versatility. Can grow into his frame.
ESPN: Grable started his collegiate career as a walk-on tight end at Jacksonville State, but transitioned to offensive line starting in 2019 and then started 27 games at left tackle while at UCF. He will compete for a roster spot in an offensive line room with veteran players, and said he's prepared to make a switch to a different position if needed. General manager Brandon Beane said that Grable is "gonna have to continue to work on his lower body strength, his power to move guys in the run game, but has great feet you know for pass pro."

Round 6, Pick 219 - Daequan Hardy, CB, Penn State: NFL: His return skills might be what keeps him in the league, as Hardy lacks the mass and strength to hold up full time on defense, but sub-4.4 speed is always appealing in a DB.
CBS Sports: A-. Case for most sudden, twitch-up athlete at CB in the class. Super speedy too. Plus recovery talent. Explosiveness in every movement. Not always sticky in coverage but does have high-caliber reps. Check Ohio State game. Erratic tackling and hard to get off blockers because of his size. Chippy in trying to make plays on screens.
ESPN: Hardy brings depth at the cornerback position and skills as a returner. In 2023, he tied the Penn State record for most punt return touchdowns in a season (two) and finished seventh in punt return average (14.6) in school history. Beane noted that if not for the new return rules, he's not sure if they would have picked Hardy, but "this guy can play one of the backup corner spots, but also he's a really nice returner." Buffalo lost multiple players at the returner spot in free agency, and with more focus on it going into this season, Hardy will have the opportunity to compete for the role.

Round 7, Pick 221 - Travis Clayton, OT, England: NFL: The Brit, who is 6-foot-7 and 301 pounds with 35-inch arms, ran a 4.81-second 40-yard dash at South Florida's pro day and immediately put himself on scouts' radars late in the process. He's a total project but might be a terrific find with some seasoning, thanks to those unusual athletic traits.
CBS Sports: C+. At 6-foot-7 and 300 pounds with 35-inch arms and a sub 5.00 40-yard dash, this is a ridiculous athlete who is new to football from London.
ESPN: Despite the Bills never seeing Clayton play football, he's an intriguing addition to develop. The initial projection is as an offensive tackle for the 6-foot-7, 303-pound boxer and former rugby player from England after offensive line coach Aaron Kromer came away from watching tape of his workouts. Notably, he ran a 4.79 40-yard dash, faster than all offensive linemen who competed at the combine in the last 10 years. He'll have an opportunity to show the Bills exactly how his skills will translate and what he may be capable of in the NFL, especially as he does not count for a roster spot as part of the International Player Pathway program.

2024.05.14 20:26 BIGHANKSMECHANICSHOP College Offense, 2006 Rose Bowl & Keeping a 15 year old game fresh. (blog post)
So to start, when I play HC I have my system, and I use it. I have a West Coast Zone Block Scheme playbook I created using Mike Shanahan's as a base, and throughout the years that is what I've ran. Updating it from time to time, but the fundamental core of my playbook was 25-30 runs a game with a work horse RB, zone stretch plays in singleback or Near, setting up the play action boot rollout. And for the last 8 or 9 years, It's the only offense I've used. Until this weekend.
This last weekend I was drinking my morning Coffee watching broncos press conference about bo nix, and at the end of the interview YT recommended me the 2006 Rose bowl game, Texas vs USC. (The greatest college football game of all time) as I watched the game on my iPad, inspiration hit me & dusted off my PS3.
For the First time ever in HC I created a College offense. As my Base playbook I used Michigan spread, Knowing how dominant Hammermill is, I decided to use his simple 75 play playbook. I added a single back two TE set to his book, about 15-20 plays in this formation, and added some shotgun passes as well. In total my playbook is 115 plays, which in contrast is rather limited compared to my 160 play westcoast book.
My defense is typically a 3-4 man pressure based off of Wade Phillips playbook. As a Broncos fan, when I play HC I try to recreate the two best era's of Denver Broncos football. Mike Shanahan's offense with Wade Phillips no fly zone defense. In the theme of new-to-me-playstyle, I used the 3-3-5 Mustang and added 14 plays in a 3-4 front. 89 plays total, The 3-3-5 is completely foreign to me, but I did know it requires 2 strong safeties and a single high free safety that is a true centerfielder. the 3 down lineman need to be big & strong, essentially 3 nose tackles
I like to create back stories to my coach, as much as Madden and Head Coach are Football games, to me I play them Like an RPG as well. where did my coach come from, what is his background and how did he become a head coach. etc

With my playbooks & lore set, I I took over the 49ers, A team I've never used before. My 50k coach points were to be saved until just before the preseason, where I'd buy Charm > Motivator and have 5k left over to put into performance. as part of my lore after acquiring motivator, I will max out performance to level 4 before buying other skills.
My first move as head coach was to trade for Vince Young & Reggie Bush, two guys who I hoped would become stud's in Hammermills playbook. Coupled with me watching the 2006 rose bowl and rush to motivator on my skill tree, I felt good about what these two could do. No other trades were made. I signed Free agent Eugene Wilson & Stacey Andrews.
As the draft came along, I wanted to target guys who were extreme athletes and use the potential boost of motivator to increase their intangibles and overall ability. Since I was using motivator so early, I gave up most of my 2009 draft to collect players who had great combines and measurables, I wanted to have 8 or 9 very solid picks and turn these players into superstars and maximize their potential.
My Draft went as followed
Limas Sweed, VY's teammate at the university of Texas - 1st Round
Martellius Bennet TE - 2nd Round
Desean Jackson WR - 2nd Round
John Greco RT - 3rd Round
Tom Zibikowski SS - 3rd Round
David hale LG - 4th Round
Zack Bowman CB - 4th Round
Steven Justice C - 5th Round
Peyton Hillis FB - 5th Round
Hank Smithers DT - 6th Round
Frank Okam DT (converted LE) - 6th Round
Darrell LongBottom DT - 7th Round
Sweed, Bennet, and Zibikowski are 3 guys I never draft. But sweed is 6'5 and with his potential boost he can reach a 99 speed, 95 catching. His injury rating is still bad, but not as bad. Zibikowski and bennet had similar changes, bennet is now a 96 potential speed with his 6'7 frame. a matchup nightmare. between him and vernon davis's measurables there isnt a single linebacker who can matchup with them.
The preseason was just as much me learning the playbook as they players. My first regular season game was a nail bitter, 37-34 victory over the cardinals that came down to the wire. Vince young finished 22-31 with 345 passing yards and 4 TD's. Reggie Bush 13 Attempts 74 yards, 2 catches 28 yards and 93 return yards. I wrapped up my season last night and went 8-8. My typical first years are 10 - 12 wins and playoff birth.
But the new challenge of learning both a defense and offense playbook with entirely new players has been a shot in the arm for me. The most fun i've had playing this game in a long while. Murder Drones is an indie animated show produced and directed by GLITCH Productions. It was originally created by Liam Vickers before signing a contract with GLITCH to turn it into a show. The plot of the show follows young robot characters going on adventures throughout the episodes. The show is primarily marketed towards the teenage and child audiences. It is free to watch on YouTube meaning that it is available to be watched by anyone who has a Youtube channel. While all of this might seem innocent and harmless at first, there is much more to Murder Drones than meets the eye. We must take into consideration that the main characters of the show which are teenagers (as shown by the fact that they are seen going to school in multiple episodes) have highly sexualised designs and are often placed in highly suggestive situations with one another which has extremely disturbing implications. We must mention one character in specific, V, who has a ridiculously sexualised design due to her over exaggerated features and revealing outfit. This design choice obviously serves no purpose other than to bait lonely induvidials into clicking on Murder Drones episodes by using predatory tactics like this. Characters such as Lizzy and Doll also have revealing clothes that they never change once. There very clearly seems to exist a pattern of oversexualised female characters within the show. This sexualisation and objectification of women is never addressed. GLITCH Productions themselves also directly promotes shipping of their characters by integrating romantic relationships into the story. One such example is "Nuzi", a ship made canon by GLITCH Productions that involves the characters N and Uzi. Uzi is clearly shown to be underage as evidenced by the fact that she still goes to school and N is shown to be in his early 20's at lowest. This clear depiction of pedophilia is completely ignored by the show's writers and producers. Not only is it ignored, as a matter of fact, it is actively encouraged. Liam Vickers, the creator of Murder Drones has made several pedophilic remarks in the past regarding underage characters. The fact that the main person behind the entire show is possibly a pedophile does not help it's reputation in the slightest. Furthermore, Liam Vickers once had a thumbnail that clearly sexualized a fictional minor on one of the videos on his old Scary Story Time With Liam YouTube channel. Although, not as subtle as the depiction of problematic relationships, Murder Drones web series might be secretly promoting racism through different implications. Robots vs humans kind of stories are as old as our world, but i would like to draw attention to several "coincidentally" questionable moments. Main characters of the show all seem to have skin color of white and you might say that they are just robots and that their so called "skin color" is just the paint. That point might have been valid if the showrunner didn't make a design decision of making those robots look so much like real humans. Speaking about real humans, they are depicted as "shadowy silhouettes" of some sort, which inevitably makes them look pitch black. This would not have been so bad, only if the main character of the show - Uzi, didn't make numerous claims about killing all humans, and do keep in mind that the coloration of her skin is pale white. In conclusion, Murder Drones is an inherently pedophilic and racist show that is especially harmful considering that it is targeted towards minors and is accessible by anyone. It should be banned worldwide for promoting subtle pedophilic and anti-black agendas and preying on juvenile population of 3rd world countries that is unable to afford cable TV and is instead forced to watch YouTube videos.

2024.05.14 19:25 Spolachs Posada appreciation post (Happy Birthday Nuke Fish)
Since today would be our dear nuke fish´s birthday, I wanted to reflect on her path and her story as well as ask for your opinions
Zebrica was released almost 2 years ago (yes it has been that long already) and Posada is still talked about more than most other Zebrica character, So I thought was it all justified ? (my flair says yes) and what exactly is making Posada so popular. So lets look at her path from a Gameplay perspective first.
Her path is quiet long and even with foresight will normally take till 1018-1020 (putting warplan Hydrogen aside) depending on if one managed to research the tech early and get those 50 nukes for the sunset test. The path consist of essentially 3-4 years of building up, 1 big war and a couple of smaller wars and lots of events. Now for that 11-13 years of Gameplay that is clearly not enough wars to fill the years with exciting gameplay, however the path massively buffs the amount of volunteer division you can send, fixes this issue somewhat. Still I would say if you want to have fun with the navy, hippogriffia is one of the few nation where you can find it. Posadas path also features no mini game or unigue mechanic, which seems like a missed opportunity, however at the same time, this makes Posadas path much more accessible and beginner friendly, for comparison some paths are dragged down by mini games and early-game hell. like 3 civil wars or a magic system that kills all the fun early in the path, both can stop player from replaying the paths or even completing it at all.
The Story is rather linear, there arent really any story branches, except for very short Fail States or completely different paths one can achieve. However for me personally the story is amazing, its a tale as old as time about Idealism vs cynicism, where justice starts and where vengeance begins and of course how Posada evolves, what are her and the players choices when faced with decisions, all of which can make the player ask themselves what they believe is right or wrong. Sure the story is not perfect, Skystar is given way too much focus and there is definitely some Moral Myopia going on, when compared to other "wholesome" nations of the mod, but unlike many other paths it has a bigger message and has moved me more on an emotional level than any other path in the mod.
Now Posada, she and her vision is an idealist version of a socialist vanguard with big scientific characteristics (space and nukes). Posada is a visionary who suffers from no corruption but can fall to her darkest impulses and cause just as much harm as many eviler leaders. This would be rather Cliché, but Posada manages to sell it better than most adaptation of this trope by simply constantly holding up a mirror to her action and making her both a victim and an optimist at the start. Posada even before her torture and PTSD was an outcast, if she was alive in our world during the 40s she would have been discarded to the fringes of society or held inside an insane asylum (in 1940 these asylums were anything but helpful), but despite all the suffering she had to go through, she didnt become a monster or an emotionless wreck. She really did start to believe in something good and began to hope and work for a better future (its up to the player how it will turn out). While its not a deep dive into psychological health, I think Posada is the best representation of it, both in the mod and in the entirety of Hoi4. (it certainly better than the "abuse/rape made me stronger" female characters, who lost all of their emotions and personality).
To finish this "essay" I want to thank the devs for writing her path and story, a story that has gotten me to think about many topics and has moved me emotionally and one that I will never forget. Still these are just my thoughts on the path, what are yours or did any other path moved you on an emotional level.
